An Overview of Sport in the Ross Isles:
Ross Islanders see themselves as a sporting nation and are immensely proud of occasionally being able to perform beyond what is expected of a country composed of a small group of islands. The most popular sports in the Ross Isles are rugby union, which is the national sport, and cricket, which is seen as the nation's summer past-time, in a similar manner to baseball in the United States. Rugby league, ice hockey and association football (usually known here as soccer) also have a presence in the Ross Isles. Ross Islanders typically show a great deal of support towards their representative regional rugby and cricket teams, which compete against each other in the most prestigious competitions in both of the major sports, and many Islanders also play one or both of these sports at the amateur level for a local club. The most prestigious tournaments in the Ross Isles' sporting calendar are the RIRFU Championship, played over the autumn and winter to determine the strongest rugby union side, and the Governor-General's Shield, a First-class (four-day) cricket competition between the representative regional teams.

Sports Teams in the Ross Isles:
Sporting competitions in the Ross Isles are contested by six representative sides, which represent different regions of the Dominion, as well as two non-regional sides. One of these teams represents the Ross Isles Armed Forces and the other is fielded by the University of the Ross Isles. The average Ross Islander is vociferous in their support for their home region and many teams have intense rivalries between them, with a victory against a rival region producing considerable civic pride. Other than upholding tradition and creating strong rivalries, the regional model has also been a success in the Ross Isles because it has allowed the small nation to have much stronger sporting competitions than it would have had with club-based competitions of a greater size.

Combined Services
Image
The Combined Services team is the outfit fielded by the Army, Navy and Air Force of the Ross Isles. The Servicemen have often proved to be a force to be reckoned with in rugby union and have a strong following among serving soldiers, veterans and families traditionally connected with the military. The Combined Services team is unique among sports teams in the Ross Isles in that they have no permanent home ground, playing some "home" matches in the larger cities of the Ross Isles and others in sporting venues located in military facilities.

Neuhannover
Image
Neuhannover (New Hanover) represents the second-largest city in the Ross Isles and the surrounding area, which is also a German-speaking enclave within the predominantly English-speaking dominion. Neuhannover are traditionally a very strong rugby side, which is without a doubt the predominant sport in the region, but also tend to struggle to compete in cricket contests. They have a particularly strong rivalry with Port Harrington and these two regions frequently meet each other in the Grand Final of the RIRFU Championship. When playing in sports in which nicknames are frequently used (such as limited overs cricket and rugby league), Neuhannover teams go by the nickname "Herzöge", which means the Dukes.

Northern Coast
Image
The Northern Coast region was traditionally considered to be part of Prince of Wales County, but the people of the area were unhappy with this given that their region is isolated from the rest of the county it belonged to for a long time. The Northern Coast split from Prince of Wales County in 2019, first in issues of local governance, then in sporting matters. As such, it is the newest of the regional teams in the Ross Isles and it is yet to be seen how they will make their mark on the sporting scene in the Dominion. Their nickname is the Knights and they play in a red, white and blue strip.

Port Harrington
Image
Port Harrington is the largest city, as well as the capital of the Ross Isles and the most successful sporting side in both cricketing and rugby terms. In return for their success over the years, they have also managed to become by far the most disliked of the regions overall. Whilst all other teams have no limit of negative feeling towards Port Harrington and consider a victory against them to be a major scalp, Port fans tend not to reciprocate these 'rivalries' with teams they tend to consider vastly inferior, except in the case of Neuhannover and cross-town rivals University. Port Harrington teams are nicknamed the Pirates for List A and T20 cricket, as well as rugby league.

Prince of Wales County
Image
Prince of Wales County represents the traditionally rural and agricultural southern coast and the sparsely populated, heavily forested and mountainous interior region of Greater Ross, the main island within the Dominion. As Reed, the county town, faces the Southern Isles across the straits, Prince of Wales County fans consider this team to be their primary rival. Despite its small size, their stadium, the County Ground, is widely considered to be the finest stadium in the Ross Isles due to its traditional aesthetic and homely feel, as well as the outstanding quality of its playing surface. The Royals is the nickname for Prince of Wales County in limited overs cricket and rugby league.

Southern Isles
Image
The Southern Isles are the outlying islands situated to the south of Greater Ross. The Southern Isles have on occasion outperformed expectations and won a championship, more often in cricket than in rugby. But their small population means that they do not have as wide a player pool to draw talent from in comparison to the other regions and in most seasons the highlight is a victory over fierce rivals, Prince of Wales County, rather than anything shiny to put in the trophy cabinet. The Southern Isles call themselves the Stars in rugby league and limited overs cricket.

St Albans
Image
St Albans is the third-largest city in the Ross Isles and is generally considered to be by far the prettiest and most historical of the three major cities in the country. St Albans also has the role of the Dominion's ecclesiastical capital and the Archbishop of the Ross Isles has his cathedral in St Albans, which is the oldest place of worship on the isles. When it comes to sport, however, St Albans does not have such a rich history and whilst they consider Neuhannover and Port Harrington to be their rivals, fans of these more successful regions often do not consider St Albans to be a serious contender and rival to them. Their nickname for List A and T20 cricket, as well as rugby league, is the Saints.

University
Image
The University of the Ross Isles also sends a team to represent it in major sporting contests. The University's desire to maintain a competitive team has resulted in them granting a large number of sport scholarships, which has also helped the development of sporting talent across the isles. University has a small, loyal fanbase made up mostly of the students and staff of the University, as well as many residents of the leafy suburbs surrounding the campus. Matches against cross-town rivals Port Harrington, which has a much working-class fanbase than University, have often been described as 'class warfare'. University append the nickname the Blues to their limited overs cricket and rugby league teams.

NORTHERN COAST CLUBS SPLIT FROM PRINCE OF WALES COUNTY

BROOKWOOD - After Prime Minister Bill Prior split his home region of the Northern Coast from Prince of Wales County in one of the first acts of his premiership, clubs from across the region met in Brookwood last night to work out whether the newly politically independent Northern Coast would also break from Prince of Wales County in sporting matters. After representatives of the many rugby, cricket and hockey clubs had debated all the potential options available to them, they were balloted and the result of this vote led to the formation of separate Northern Coast sporting authorities for rugby union, rugby league, cricket and hockey. It is rumoured that Northern Coast representative sides will play in a red, white and blue strip and use the Knights nickname in limited overs cricket, as well as hockey and rugby league. The first competition in which the Northern Coast will compete separately from Prince of Wales County is this year's RIHA National League ice hockey tournament. To alleviate the scheduling issues posed by having seven teams in the league, the Ross Isles Hockey Association is also adding a Combined Services (Army, Navy and Air Force) team to the league. The rugby authorities in both codes of the game, as well as the Ross Isles Soccer Association have all agreed to adopt this approach from next season. In contrast, the more conservative and cautious Ross Isles Cricket Board has set out a plan for including the Northern Coast and Combined Services teams in both limited overs cricket competitions, with the opportunity to be awarded first-class status and entrance to the Governor-General's Shield after completing three seasons of List A and T20 cricket.
