That would be pretty hilarious though, I imagine most Svalbardians being like, "We have a cricket team?"

So, here it is, the first round is underway. Here are the results:

First round
Group A
Ainslie 283/8 (50 overs) 0.74
Cosie 246/7 (50 overs) -0.74

Corindia 197/8 (38 overs) 0.39
Alteran Republics 194 (40.5 overs) -0.39

Nhoor 200/8 (50 overs) -0.98
Belle Ilse en Terre 249/4 (50 overs) 0.98

Athara Magarat 218/9 (50 overs) -0.06
Mitravarta 221/6 (43.4 overs) 0.06

Group B
ThePenguinLand 158/2 (50 overs) -2.24
Scantarbia 162/7 (29.4 overs) +2.24

Norstham 299/6 (50 overs) +1.09
Polar Svalbard 220 (45.3 overs) -1.09

Dragao Do Mar 236 (48 overs) -0.17
Martenyika 237/1 (50 overs) +0.17

Aruia 240/8 (50 overs) -0.35
Havalland 242/8 (46.5 overs) +0.35

After the first round, the standings are as follows:

Group A:

(1): Belle Isle En Terre, 3 points, NRR 0.98
(2): Ainslie, 3 points, NRR 0.74
(3): Corindia. 3 points, NRR 0.39
(4): Mitravarta, 3 points, NRR 0.06
(5): Athara Magarat, 0 points, NRR -0.06
(6): Alteran Republics, 0 points, NRR -0.39
(7): Cosie, 0 points, NRR -0.74
(8): Nhoor, 0 points, -0.98

Group B:

(1): Scantabria, 3 points, NRR 2.24
(2): Norstham, 3 points, NRR 1.09
(3): Havalland, 3 points, NRR 0.35
(4): Martenyika, 3 points, NRR 0.17
(5): Dragao Do Mar, 0 points, -0.17
(6): Aruia, 0 points, NRR -0.35
(7): Polar Svalbard, 0 points, NRR -1.09
(8): ThePenguinLand, 0 points, NRR -2.24

Note: I don't think I've explained yet, but the points scoring and knockout stages qualification will work as follows: The top four from each group will qualify for the quarter finals. Three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw (which happens very rarely in cricket, cough), and none for a loss. Teams on the same amount of points are separated by NRR (Net Run Rate), with a higher NRR being better.

I have no idea what any of that means, all I know is I lost. (All as it should be) Thanks for bolding the winners!

Does this mean we won a game? I can do some posts about a confused corindi public rallying to the team which succeeded against all odds, if only for one game

The Norsans set a score of 229 that the Svalbardian team failed to achieve. The bolding out is nice one. NRR means net run rate and is used to analyze performance or teamwork.

Corindia wrote:Does this mean we won a game? I can do some posts about a confused corindi public rallying to the team which succeeded against all odds, if only for one game

Yep. You guys batted first and set a score of 197 while losing 8 wickets in 38 (out of 50) overs. The Alterans could not beat that score and lost.

You definitely should make that news post :)

Mitravarta 216/2 (50 overs) -1.57

Belle Ilse en Terre 237/5 (50 overs) -0.74
Athara Magarat 241/9 (43.1 overs) -0.74

Alteran Republics 238 (44.3 overs) -1.38
Nhoor 307/7 (50 overs) +1.38

Ainslie 209/8 (41.5 overs) +0.82
Corindia 208/7 (50 overs) -0.82

Group B
Scantarbia 306/3 (50 overs) -1.02
Havalland 307/6 (43 overs) +1.02

Martenyika 201/6 (50 overs) -1.16
Aruia 259/2 (50 overs) +1.16

Polar Svalbard 257/6 (50 overs) -3.74
Dragao Do Mar 444/8 (50 overs) +3.74

ThePenguinLand 308/7 (50 overs) +2.44
Norstham 186 (48.1 overs) -2.44

And the table after round 2:

Group A:
(1): Ainslie, 6 points, NRR 0.74

(4): Nhoor, 3 points, NRR 0.40
(5): Belle Isle En Terre, 3 points, NRR 0.24
(6): Corindia. 3 points, NRR -0.43
(7): Mitravarta, 3 points, NRR -1.51
(8): Alteran Republics, 0 points, NRR -1.77

Group B:
(1): Havalland, 6 points, NRR 1.37
(2): Dragao Do Mar, 3 points, 3.57
(3): Scantarbia, 3 points, NRR 1.22
(4): Aruia, 3 points, NRR 0.81
(5): ThePenguinLand, 3 points, NRR -0.20
(6): Martenyika, 3 points, NRR -0.99
(7): Norstham, 3 points, NRR -1.35
(8): Polar Svalbard, 0 points, NRR -4.83

Also a quick reminder (Aka a copy paste of what Norstham said last week...): The points scoring and knockout stages qualification will work as follows: The top four from each group will qualify for the quarter finals. Three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw (which happens very rarely in cricket, cough), and none for a loss. Teams on the same amount of points are separated by NRR (Net Run Rate, which essentially means you scored faster (+) or slower (-) than the Cup average)), with a higher NRR being better.

Alterans everywhere are plotting to overthrow the Government and setting it down a dark path, with the aim of the military conquest of Nhoor.

Norstham wrote:It’s been way too long - but cricket in TWI is back! Oldies of TWI, you’ll know how to submit your teams so just skip ahead and do that - it’s the same way as the other comps we’ve had. For the newies and those who’d love a reminder, here’s how you do it.
In reply to this thread
    • Write your team name (ie (insert Nation) XI, (insert nation) Men’s Cricket Team, (insert nation) some culturally symbolic or competitive sounding name (note: this isn’t really like an American franchise team name, more like a nickname, for instance, South African are known by the nickname ‘Proteas’ and New Zealand ‘The Black Caps’, not like ‘South Africa Proteas’)and in brackets their skill level out of ten. If you’re stuck for what number to go for consider the sport’s popularity in your nation, the quality of the player pool, and the financial resources available to the sport in your nation. Consider these relative to other nations who have submitted their teams.
    • Write 11-15 full names in a list. Designate one of them a captain by doing (c) and at least one a wicketkeeper by doing (wk)
    • If you feel like it, make jerseys and team lineups for your nation’s squad - also if you want to add additional information or backstory for your squad, go for it. Voluntary though - finish steps 1 and 2 and you will be considered an entrant to the tournament.
How the tournament will work
Each nation will play the other nation once - the top eight (if we get more than 16) or the top 4 (if we get less than 16) nations will advance to the final stage. Here they will participate in knock-out finals to get to the grand final.
When does it start?
The planned commencation is mid august - likely the weekend of the 17th. It will finish most likely in september depending on how many teams we get.
So let’s rewrite the wrongs write a different storyline to the IRL Cricket World Cup - submit your teams below!
Know nothing about cricket?
Not an issue, but if you want to learn a bit about the great game then here’s a handy five minute breakdown of cricket, and if anything isn’t covered in that, then Ainslie or myself will be able to answer any questions. It is worth mentioning that in cricket, the competition called the World Cup refers to the world championship in the 50 over format of the game, rather than the Test or T20 format, and it is the 50 over format that the TWI edition of this competition will follow.
Thanks.
