Cricket Isles Cup 2019 [TWI ONLY]

Postby Norstham » Sat Jul 27, 2019 11:53 am

It’s been way too long - but cricket in TWI is back! Oldies of TWI, you’ll know how to submit your teams so just skip ahead and do that - it’s the same way as the other comps we’ve had. For the newies and those who’d love a reminder, here’s how you do it.
In reply to this thread
    • Write your team name (ie (insert Nation) XI, (insert nation) Men’s Cricket Team, (insert nation) some culturally symbolic or competitive sounding name (note: this isn’t really like an American franchise team name, more like a nickname, for instance, South African are known by the nickname ‘Proteas’ and New Zealand ‘The Black Caps’, not like ‘South Africa Proteas’)and in brackets their skill level out of ten. If you’re stuck for what number to go for consider the sport’s popularity in your nation, the quality of the player pool, and the financial resources available to the sport in your nation. Consider these relative to other nations who have submitted their teams.
    • Write 11-15 full names in a list. Designate one of them a captain by doing (c) and at least one a wicketkeeper by doing (wk)
    • If you feel like it, make jerseys and team lineups for your nation’s squad - also if you want to add additional information or backstory for your squad, go for it. Voluntary though - finish steps 1 and 2 and you will be considered an entrant to the tournament.
How the tournament will work
Each nation will play the other nation once - the top eight (if we get more than 16) or the top 4 (if we get less than 16) nations will advance to the final stage. Here they will participate in knock-out finals to get to the grand final.
When does it start?
The planned commencation is mid august - likely the weekend of the 17th. It will finish most likely in september depending on how many teams we get.
So let’s rewrite the wrongs write a different storyline to the IRL Cricket World Cup - submit your teams below!
Know nothing about cricket?
Not an issue, but if you want to learn a bit about the great game then here’s a handy five minute breakdown of cricket, and if anything isn’t covered in that, then Ainslie or myself will be able to answer any questions. It is worth mentioning that in cricket, the competition called the World Cup refers to the world championship in the 50 over format of the game, rather than the Test or T20 format, and it is the 50 over format that the TWI edition of this competition will follow.
Thanks.

Team Corindia (referred to as Los Renacuajos or the tadpoles); 2/10
Noa Antúnez (c)
Jeffry Stark (wk)
Jeptha Martel (wk)
Eloi Davison (wk)
Tyrrell Prescott
Manley Rider
Albin De La Fuente
Carmelo Lachapelle
Adrien Bennett
Lucas Paquet
Yancy González
Pierrick Alvarado
Corin Yates
Malcolm Blackwood
Lorrin Côté

Following a catastrophic season for the tadpoles in which nearly half of the roster and most of the coaching staff were arrested for involvement in an insider trading scheme, the CCA (Corindi Cricket Association) went through a period of turmoil during which the chairman and board who presided over the scandal, as well as the next two rounds of successors, resigned. Although there are a lot of fresh faces on the roster, the team is not expected to be significantly worse than its last two seasons, during which the team put up two embarrassing performances against much more competent teams. But things aren't all bad, the recent controversy has drawn more attention to the sport in Corindia than ever before, a low bar to be sure, but still viewership is up and ad revenue is returning. Could this be the tadpole's year?

Decided White Tigers suited the football team better so Red Rhinos it is then.

Red Rhinos - 6/10

1. Anjum Yakkha (Opener)
2. Benjamin Asti (Batsman)
3. Harry Gauchan (Captain and Wicket-keeper)
4. Satya Narayan Poudel (Batsman)
5. Muhing Tumbahang (All rounder)
6. Raza Bakir (Batsman)
7. Pheyamlungba Rajbansi (All rounder who plays for Blaxland Explorers in AInslie's T20 MAX League)
8. Sam Rachhuum (All rounder)
9. Man Bahadur Karki (All rounder)
10. Wade Khorja Poon (Seam bowler)
11. Chandra Pahari (Spin bowler)

Cricket is not as followed as football or martial arts in AM. Nonetheless there are a few stars (can they be considered that?) there. Of particular note are all-rounder Pheyamlungba Rajbansi who plays in the T20 MAX League for Blaxland Explorers and the teenage spin bowler Chandra Pahari.

*I'll be posting my team soon*

But, quick PSA many of you have already submitted names of players for my T20 Comp a while ago: https://www.nationstates.net/page=dispatch/id=1112334. You could consider using some of them given that it's limited overs cricket - provides some continuity and saves you thinking up of some extra names :p

The PenguinLand's XI-PenguinLand Mens cricket team, The Black shirts (quality:4/10)
XI:
1). Sergej Sermovivic(C)
2). Bogdan Simsanski
3). Ellis castro
4). Morawic Cancerec
5). Jose Carlo
6). Juan Bernando
7). Isic Beninvic
8 ). Jose allopo
9). Juan Benito(WK)
10). Ian Rumsonovic
11). Danni Alberto

This is a quite a big moment for the PenguinLand as it is the first international competition for them in the Western Isles and one of their first cricket tournaments, although with cricket not being a major sport and attracting only amauteur and semi-professional following domestically do not expect a great performance only a bunch of rookies excited to be on the international stage.

Norsan XI, Norstham Men’s Cricket Team, [nickname], [rating]

Squad (note: the names in brackets are a comparable real life cricketer to the player in my squad to give those who are into their cricket a more detailed idea of the types of player who make up the Norsan squad):

Dávi Aserson - opening batsman - RHB - ODI batting average: 13.6 - (KL Rahul/Vince/Iqbal); shaky opener
with a solid technique, but not consistently established in international cricket and several technical deficiencies leading to some poor performances.

Gunnar Fridleif - opening batsman - LHB - ODI batting average: 29.86 - (Roy/Bairstow); powerful, fast scoring opener with an ability to target all types of bowling and set field, and capability to score big runs quickly. However, he has a tendency to lack patience, particularly against quality pace openers when batting first in the day.

Johannes Hagen - batsman, captain - RHB - ODI batting average: 52.36 - (Root/Williamson); not explosive or consistently big hitting but highest quality batsman and leader of the team. Tends to maintain a very high batting average scoring at about a run a ball in ODI, and very dangerous once ‘in’, going on to make a big score if not out quickly. His only technical deficiency is a tendency to play moving deliveries outside of off stump that should be left. Anchor of the team.

Halmar Alexandur - batsman - LHB - ODI batting average: 36.74 - (Morgan); similar role to Hagen, though slightly more aggressive in shot selection. Weakness against short pitch bowling.

Arnold Ødegaard - batsman - RHB - ODI batting average: 17.72 - (Khawaja/Taylor); conservative, slow scoring test match style batsman generally in the team to stabilise but not necessarily first choice selection. He has significant technical deficiencies against spin bowling.

Timo Hannes - batsman, wk, vice captain - LHB - ODI batting average: 45.88 - (Buttler); most talented and explosive batsman in the team, left handed with a slightly unorthodox technique meaning that he is extremely hard to bowl and set fields to due to his ability to hit all types of deliveries for boundaries all around the ground.

Jóhan Beinirlow - all rounder - RHB - batting average: 23.63 - bowling average: 41.71 - (Stokes) as a batsman, he is fairly conservative in his shot selection with an ability to strike big shots when necessary, especially apt at stabilising the middle order after a batting collapse and rescuing an innings. As a bowler, Beinirlow bowls fast medium swinging deliveries around 80-85mph conceding few runs but not always taking many wickets. Useful bowler in the middle overs.

Hallur Djoni - all rounder - RHB - batting average: 25.2 - bowling average: 30.24 - (Woakes); similar to Beinirlow albeit with a generally poorer batting technique and better bowling ability. Conservative but still more than handy as a batsman, mostly using conventional test match style shots. As a bowler, he is high quality and often used as an opening bowler with an ability to swing a new ball through the air and take wickets.

Adel Annarsson - all rounder spinner - RHB - off spin bowler - batting average: 18.54 - bowling average: 28.2 - (Moeen/Jadeja); potential to score big runs as a batsman but undone by his decisions when facing quality bowling leading to soft dismissals, but obvious if sometimes unrealised quality as a batsman. As a bowler, he has a potential to take wickets but is not a top quality off spinner unless on a pitch particularly conducive to spin bowling, which is the team’s main weakness.

Olé Curir - all rounder - RHB - batting average: 21.24 - bowling average: 30.05 - (S Curran); Young, exciting all rounder with an ability to bat in a mature and measured way scoring gritty runs up the order, and a very good middle order fast medium bowler at 80-85mph utilising seam movement.

Cristopher Poulsen - fast medium bowler - RHB - batting average: 12.24 - bowling average: 34.26 - (Southee); left handed bowling makes him hard to score runs off of, 80-85mph, occasionally hitting higher unsustained speeds. Bowling utilises swing movement with a new ball. Few runs are scored off of him but has injury problems and doesn’t take many wickets.

Felix Isaken - fast medium bowler - RHB - batting average: 8.37 - bowling average: 39.83 - (Tom Curran); young squad player, not usually selected but promising for the future. Tends to be expensive unless on a particularly good pitch for bowling.

Marius Møller - express pace bowler - RHB - batting average: 8.53 - bowling average: 12.61 - (Starc/Cummins/Ferguson/Archer); fearsome bowler with an ability to intimidate batsman with sustained bowling upwards of 95mph, especially utilising short pitch bowling to unsettle batsman and Yorkers to expose bad technique.

Jan Thrane - express pace bowler - RHB - batting average: 7.37 - bowling average: 9.48 - (Starc/Cummins/Ferguson/Archer); similar to Møller in terms of their extremely fast, quality and sustained express bowling, usually opening the bowling and bowling the death overs.

[nickname, rating and further detail about the background of the team will be added shortly]

Ainslie Cricket XV (9/10)

Batsmen
Jordan Ardale - Age: 31 Batting Style: left-handed Batting Average: 43.44 Electorate: Wesland
Jordan Ardale is an explosive opener akin to Aaron Finch or Quinton De Kock. Averaging 43.44, he has been a central part of the team for more than three years. He typically bats at number one or two in the order.

Julian Arundel - Age: 27 Batting Style: Right-handed Batting Average: 42.13 Bowling Style: Right-hand leg break Electorate: Dallama
Julian Arundel was a last minute addition to the squad following strong performances in the T20 Max League and the Cauralia bilateral series. He has played in the national team three times last year but was dropped at the start of the year. He is a steady batsman like Usman Khawaja or Eoin Morgan who often shores up the top to protect the middle order. He also offers the team part time leg spin.

Simon Karlen (c) - Age: 32 Batting Style: right-handed Batting Average: 39.86
A steadying influence on the team, Simon Karlen has played in a variety of positions most recently as number two. This is despite him being most comfortable at three in the order. He is akin to Kane Williamson or Joe Root in the comparatively slow paced yet high scoring innings he creates.

Dean Patterson - Age: 27 Batting Style: right-handed Batting average: 38.42
A regular batsmen of the squad in the past three years, Patterson is another steadying batsman who is well known for running between the wickets as opposed to scoring boundaries much like Alex Carey. He has regularly batted at number four and is tipped to be one of the major ‘locked in’ players for any given starting eleven.

Angus Renwick - Age: 29 Batting Style: left-handed Batting average: 35.23
A fast scoring batsman, Renwick offers a dynamic and fluid option to the squad. He is much is quite like Jonny Bairstow in that regard. He regularly has batted at number four however is likely to bat at five, six or seven as a finisher if he is selected.

Harry Innes - Age: 23 Batting style: right-handed Batting average: 29.31
A dynamic batsman who can play a variety of roles, the young wicketkeeper-batsman is often touted as Daintree’s right hand man. He was the eleventh highest run scorer in the T20 Max League, a reassuring result given how young he is. He is much like Shaun Marsh or James Vince, and often has a shaky start and middle before he begins capitalising.

Callum Sunderland - Age: 31 Batting style: left handed Batting average: 24.32
A fast scoring batsman who often plays a finishing role in squads, Callum Sunderland is similar to Jimmy Neesham in batting. He is considered as a left of field option for the squad.

Alex Daintree - Age: 28 Batting style: left handed Batting average: 46.83
An explosive batsman who combines quick running between the wickets with boundaries, Alex Daintree is a dynamic and exciting batsman with excellent glovework. He is similar to Alex Carey with a bit of Joss Buttler thrown in. He is considered a certainty for the world cup squad.

All rounders
Adam Gillson - Age: 29 Batting style: left handed Batting average: 32.14 Bowling style: Left off break
A handy option for the middle order, Adam Gillson is considered as a batting all rounder. He provides an anchoring influence on the middle order and has a lower strike rate than people who would occupy a similar position such as Daintree or McKellar. He is similar to a Marnus Labuschagne.

Timothy McKellar - Age: 33 Batting style: right handed Batting average: 30.12 Bowling style: right arm fast
A hard hitting batting option in the middle order, McKellar offers fast speed in run accumulation and in his bowling. He is similar to Nathan Coulter-Nile, often being especially handy on batting-friendly wickets and in scrappy situations.

Bowlers
Kai Rendall - Age: 30 Bowling style: right arm fast Batting average: 9.12
A fast bowling option with class and experience, Rendall regularly clocks in at 150km/h and regularly has a low economy rate and consistent wickets yet can also hold down an end to allow a more attacking bowler to come in from the other end.

Cooper Fletcher - Age: 29 Bowing style: left arm fast
A likely 8 or 9 for the squad, Cooper Fletcher is a fast bowler who normally clocks in at around 150km/h. With an ultra-accurate and fast yorker, he is similar to Mitchell Starc in the way he can clean up the tail and quickly finish games.

Allere Gannon - Age: 25 Bowling style: left arm fast
A young and exciting bowler who is handy as a lower order batsman, Allere Gannon is well known for his ability to swing the ball both ways and cut corners around batsman. He regularly bowls at first change when he is in the national team yet is not a certainty given the likelihood of multiple fast bowlers being in the team.

Charlie Rentige - Age: 23 Bowling style: left leg spin
A young and talent leg spinning bowler, Charlie Rentige is also a quite proficient batsman who is well known for rotating the strike. He is also a leg spinner with multiple variations and can provide both an attacking option and an economical option. He regularly bowls through the middle overs and is a wicket-taking option.

Thomas Harris - Age: 26 Bowling style: right leg spin
An established leg spinning bowler who is regularly referred to as the best spinner in Ainslie at the moment, Thomas Harris is a bowler who is a rapid wickettaker that can very much leak runs through the middle overs. This makes him a somewhat risky option on some wickets that are less conducive to leg spin. Harris is likely to be included in a national squad, yet may lose his spot to Rentige if the Ahnslens seek to have a longer tail.

Oh and here's their jersey:

Cricket was introduced to Mitrāvarta during the time of vassal state status of the British Empire. It quickly caught on in the urban areas and villages immediately surrounding it, however more traditional sports such as Dhvaj-yuddh and chariot racing held firm in the deeper rural heartland. It is the second most popular sport in the country, upheld mainly by urbanites.

Ilsan IX, National Men's Cricket Team*, 'The King's Men*' [6/10]

Lord Alfred Wilmore (c)
Baron George Wilmore
Sir Edward of Southvale
Sir Bernard Swaile
Sir George Swaile
Sir Steven Walden
Sir Thomas Weston
Sir John Willis (wk)
Edwin Brickman
Edmund Ostler (wk)
Clifton Paget
John Smith

*Cricket was not played competitively at the national level until a royal initiative in July, though turnout was rather limited. As such, this team, rather unsubtly named the King's Men, was officially christened the National Men's Cricket Team.

This team, however has had an illustrious history ere it attained its current status. Cricket, as a sport, is essentially confined to the south, though it is now played throughout the eastern Ilse with the migration of many ethnic Angern (by whom the sport is primarily played) to the Nord Île region. Rather than officially sanctioned teams, groups of individuals gather to form teams several months before the season starts. To provide a modicum of balance, all teams are divided into 'Amateurs' and the 'Established', with category determined by the Established team with the worst record during the previous season, who get have the option to get a guaranteed spot in the Establishment, though usually these teams split up and find new players, making the difficulty vary from year to year. The King's Men represent a mix of the best Ilsan cricketeers, with a slight bias towards those who can afford to travel abroad for the tournament.

Martenyikan Men's Cricket Team ("Léopards" or Leopards) (2)

1. Abi Naudé
2. Cayman Kashoba
3. Chike Tilmidja
4. Rudi Lange (c)
5. Khari Fétique
6. Hippolyte Lerato
7. Jens Hauke
8. Sébastien Leroux (wk)
9. Martin Adetola
10. Kaleb Yejide
11. Zikomo Jilele
12. Abraham Kolapo

Cricket is still fairly new to Martenyika--and the reverse is also true. It was imported by a foreign cricket coach some years ago (now deceased), who started introducing cricket to children, due to the fact that cricket had some general parallels with old native Martenyikan games [factbook to come!]. Soon enough cricket began to catch on, and move up to more official club, and now national levels. It still isn't as popular at the national level compared to other sports; the current coach and team knows they aren't the best by any means, but they optimistically aim to do their best, and learn as much as they can to improve.

Bunch of dudes who play cricket as basically beer league realized that Polar Svalbard wasn't sending anyone and applied to be the Svalbardian team. Government said sure. Kick the shit out of 'em. Or do a story like the US men's curling team idgaf.

2/10 gang rise up. Personally I'm happy to send bad teams into regional competitions if it means a more realistic/fun experience for the people who care about the sport. Let's them have more meaningful strong teams.

Yeah cheers for that, it also makes it more reflective of real tournaments (though the smaller format of the recent one meant that only the established test playing teams from the major cricket countries played) where in the past teams like Canada have featured.

____________

Background

Despite being the island's second most popular1 sport, cricket in Cosie has seen better days. Since returning to regional play, the national men's cricket team has spent much of the summer incurring defeat after defeat across the Western Isles. The Guanas of today are a far cry from their 60s heyday, but that's to be expected after nearly fifty years without regular international play.

The team's losses have been tough to take, but there's a belief that our players are learning from said losses. Solomon Walker, captain of the national team, claimed last Friday that his teammates have finally figured out "the rhythm" to playing against their opposition in the region. Exactly what he meant by "the rhythm" is unclear; we'll have to wait for the Guanas' first match in the tournament to see what they've figured out.

If results don't end in our favour, however, the fans are at least hoping for local star Anthony Parrish to make a name for himself in the Western Isle's premier cricket competition.
