The sound between Halholzer and Harmonica was full of Apoxian military ships after the battlegroup recently arrived. At the dockside where the A.S Broadstar was docked, head of the battlegroup and Apoxian Army Chief of Staff General Harriet Thornely was disembarking having travelled on the destroyer from Apox to Mareibat. She was greeted by the Chief Harbour master from Halholzer, Imperial Otteley, who was now technically the Head of the Mareibatian forces. The grizzled old man shoke her hand firmly, the two of them locked in an icy stare all the while.
"General. I trust your trip was pleasant."
"Quite fine thank you Chief."
"I'm sure Mareibat won't have all the home comforts found back in Apox, but we will do what we can for you and your troops."
"I don't doubt. Enough of pleasantries though Imperial, tell me about the situation from where you're standing." The two were by this point walking along the jetty towards a warehouse at the end which was acting as mission control for the joint Apoxian-Mareibatian forces. The dockhands striding around the jetty were giving hostile looks. It seemed the Apoxians weren't entirely welcomed en masse back in Mareibat.
'Who can blame them?' thought Harriet, 'but what did I expect, generally people aren't too happy to see me.'
"The situation here on Main Island and across the way is stable but fragile at the moment. Colwinna [Head of the MDP] is hoping that once a better Apoxian presence has been established on the islands the tense situation will calm down a little. We have some soldiers inserted in the Bellight People's Army and the Mareibat Freedom Militia, who tell us that both of those islands are totally under control of those groups. The MFM have been attempting to spread to the island of Arbour to the north as well, with limited success so far. The other islands aren't under the militias' control at the moment, but also aren't particular under central control either."
They passed into the warehouse, which was partway between looking like a poorly controlled storage facility, what with equipment being unloaded everywhere and a mission control with rows of desks with computers being set up in that gloriously organised army fashion. At the back of the warehouse were three storeys of office space, and this is where the Chief Harbour master was taking her now.

"Good to hear Imperial. And what's the story with the forces controlled by the MDP?"
"Not great to be honest. The harbour masters funding and numbers were whittled away through years of mismanagement prior to this all going down. I've got just over five hundred people under my command at the moment, many of them barely trained. We've got two gunboats, left over from the previous Apoxian occupation" - she noticed a hint of resentment in his voice at that - "and a number of converted fishing skiffs as well. We're not finding a lack of recruits at the moment so I'm hoping those numbers will be bolstered soon."
"I should hope so. A force that size won't be able to control anything for long. Once hostilities are over and the situation is stable, I'm sure the higher ups will leave an Apoxian presence here to assist with training operations."
"So kind." Harriet thought she caught just the faintest hint of sarcasm in the old sea dogs voice at the last comment. She restrained herself from pulling rank and causing more tension on day one. Her mission here was as much a political one as it was combat focussed. They had arrived at a large office, complete with a floor to ceiling window which overlooked the warehouse below. Inside, a number of her aides were scurrying about, unpacking computer equipment and furniture.

"As I'm sure you can see, this will be your office base whilst you're in Halholzer."
"Indeed." She turned to face Imperial, "Thank you for your welcome, I've got a few calls to make. We had better have a full briefing ASAP, in one hour. Dismissed." The abruptness caught the old commander off-guard and he half saluted, half bowed and rapidly exited the room. She sat down on the faux-leather chair at her desk and fired up her computer. The familiar crest of the Apoxian army displayed in the signature gold and red colours before she glanced at her watch,

"Shit, conference call with the boss coming right up." She cleared her throat,
"Alrrrright people, I've got an important call to make. Dismissed, but return to finish unpacking once I'm done here." Her small army of aides filed out of the room as right on cue her phone squawked into life. A tap of a button later and she was on a conference call with the great and the good of Apox;

"Harriet. I'm guessing you're safely installed in Halholzer?"
"Indeed I am Matthias, literally just rolled off the boat. Been getting acquainted with our friend the Chief of the Harbour master."
"Good to hear. I've heard he's quite the legend on the waves. Knows the islands like the back of his hand."
"He gave off the impressive of being insurbordinate and churlish to me to be honest."
A slight snigger came over the phone,
"Now, now Harriet, he's probably just a tad upset to have us come trampling all over his party." Chief Officer Johnson, of the MIS (Ministry of Intelligence and Security) piped up. Why did the bloody spies always have to be involved in this?
"Well, we've only got involved due to the bloody mess they've..."
"Yes quite Harriet. What's your plan on the ground there? I want us to get a meeting in with Colwinna Kelly as soon as possible. Sort out some joint goals, things to work towards...." Now it was Harriets turn to interrupt.
"That's all well and good, but we've got ourselves into a war here and it's one I indeed to see through. I've ordered a briefing with the top military brass here in an hour. We can firm up plans to counter the Mareibatian threat then, and get this sorted out."
"Well glad to here you've got it all worked out then!" Now Matthias was sounding a little worked up,
"Because I'll have you know it's not all rosebuds and sunshine back here either! I've got bloody Artur Winklebottom basically implying we should just nuke the entire islands and be done with it, not to mention the Eurans squeezing my balls over the bloody ENS Swifton. Be under no illusions that we need a plan and we need a plan fast!"
"Yes sir, I..."
"And also we need a resolution to the useless Cossack holed up in his mansion. Get a platoon over there soon to monitor the situation and work out what you're going to do with all that."
"Yes sir, I'll be sure to bring it up at the meeting." Daramie Jenkins, Leader of the ANP and silent on the call up until now chose this moment to speak out,
"Just make sure as well that you're careful as well when you're planning these manoeuvres... the voter base still isn't entirely sold on this degree of aggression."
"This degree of aggression will save many more lives in the long run," Harriet said through gritted teeth. Why were the ANP so anti-war these days? Want did they want to do, sent the militia groups a bunch of gift baskets and nicely ask them to stop being so naughty?!?

And welcome to another edition of the Sports With Bort blog, I'm your always humble host Bort Stevens. We're continuing our special report on Torisakia's World Cup 83 campaign that we began earlier. Previously, we talked about Torisakia and how garbage of a team they are. Today we'll stray away from talking about the event at all because it's not even worth talking about. So we'll do a little bit of story time.

I want to talk about the first time I got to meet the late, great Murvin Alexander. You know, that guy who got executed for talking about one of our hockey player's breasts and not paying his taxes? It was, in fact, at a hockey game some years ago. Torisakia was playing some unimportant nation in one of the World Cup of Hockey events. Can't remember which one it was but I know that Alexei Borodin and Cassidy McKenzie were still on the team. Anyways I was there with my friend Boharry, Rog Heinerscmaltz (RIP), and Stevie McBanana at the Maze Bank Arena in Douglas-La Pryor. I was just trying to make my way to my seat when who do I see but Murvin Alexander. He was there with his brother David (RIP), Harrybo Williams (NO relation to my friend Boharry quit asking me), and Big Black Tony. He was huge, he was taller than me (talking about Tony). My friend Stevie McBanana saw him as well and said "Hey! That's Murvin Alexander. Lets go say 'hi!" and I said "no, no. We shouldn't bother. He probably wants to be left alone so he can watch the game". So that was that.

Not long after, a few minutes later. We get to our ringside seats and who else do we see but Murvin and his friends again. They were sitting in the seats next to us. I even had the seat right next to him. It was fantastic. I thought about just ignoring him the entire time but it was no good because he was shouting, ranting, and raving "You wooden goat!" to everyone on the ice. I didn't understand it. So not long after we started conversing. And then I found out that he knew me as well. He said he had followed my blog for years and that I was a big inspiration to him in terms of sports writing. I was flattered. The great Murvin Alexander was inspired by me, some goofball with the mind of a two year old. We talked for a good bit about Holland. There we were, reading on my phone: "My friend Hans from a place far, far away grows weed". And we stuck blue strips of paper onto white strips of paper on the armrests. Then we talked about Cassidy's "canals". I think you know what I mean. You know the kind of things. And we kept talking about tulips and cheese. In the end I thought they grew cheese and ate weed. Anyway this went on and on and on for the rest of the game. I don't think either of us actually watched it. I can't remember if we won or not but chances are we didn't given how dysfunctional our national ice hockey team was at the time.

We said our goodbyes and exchanged social media information and went our separate ways. That was the one and only time I ever interacted with Murvin in person. I talked to him numerous times over the internet about weed, cheese, and "canals". All the way up until he was arrested and executed a few years ago. I stayed in contact with his brother David after that as well. He kept Murvin's blog running for a little while before he just shut it down all together as a memorial for Murvin. The last time I talked to David was a few months ago when I asked him what Murvin meant when he was yelliw "You wooden goat!" at everyone on the ice. He said he didn't know, but that he would ask him when he met him in the afterlife and get back to me. Huh. So about three months ago David died when he was at home going to his fridge and he slipped and started sliding on the shiny floors of his kitchen and fell face first into the Vidalia Slice Wizard and he just fell over and stopped breathing. I haven't heard back from him about what Murvin meant, so I guess it'll always be a mystery to me. I could ask Harrybo or Big Black Tony, but Harrybo is serving life in Tokai Pen on Death Row and I never got any contact info from Big Black Tony and I don't know where to find him. If anyone knows where he's at, could you let me know?

Welp, that's all I have for today. I'll be back with another edition of Sports with Bort soon to (not) discuss the Torisakia-Flavovespia matchup and preview the next matchup as well as have another story time and tell you all about the time I was in high school and had a teacher who was so hot she used to stand out in the front saying "Right. Who wants a go?". Take care and you wooden goat!

Walling off the Top (Not Really): A Casual Look-see at Match Day 9

By Oliver G.

I don't know how, I don't know why, but Qasden did something that actually dealt damage.

Let's face it, entering this set of qualifiers, we all can admit we expected the Vans to screw up monumentally, dump another manager, and pursue another star-crossed regional tournament. It's a common thought among us, especially after the Qads delivered a record-low 4 goals spanning 7 lackluster matches. Even if they won 3 of those matches, we've watched them choke to impossibly easy adversaries before (albeit, said adversaries would go on to qualify every cycle since then). But lads, it took them over half the qualifying cycle, but they may have finally woken up.

For the second time this season, the Qads visit the classy Hotchskarth Cabin in Destiny to go toe to toe against Starcom Racing. Don't remember the first match between the two? It's cool; it's hard to compete in ratings when you're playing at the same time as Drawkland-Osarius and Vilita-Jeruselem. Nevertheless, it was a dull match score-wise, ending in a mere 1-0 victory for the Qads in Cope-N-Hagen. Whoop dee doo, time to bust open the non-alcoholic champagne. But really, the match was still very tense, with Starcom's aggressive offense giving Macron Abbott a run for his money, it was just a snoozefest for those liking big numbers. The match in Destiny, however, didn't disappoint.

Alright, alright, I'll stop ending paragraphs with the same cliffhanger. Match day 9 was anything but a snoozefest. For reals, the total score from the match alone was more than all the combined goals made in Qasden's previous games. Will I actually legitimately go into full detail like my co-workers? Of course not! Our ratings would hit rock bottom like it did back in 80. So instead, here's a fun little graphic by the guy who still needs to be fired.
Image

7' Foster
37' Munson
42' Foster (2)
69' Xandreas (nice)
85' Lumiere
Sa'Affa 21'
Bradley 46'

Well would ya look at that.

I don't know what got into the Blue-Reds today, but a group of decently managed cat enthusiasts managed to beat one of the most offensive-strong teams in the group...again! While it was tough for the Brickwall that is Abbott to give up goals to Sa'Affa & Bradley, a stellar performance by Onyx Foster propelled Qasden towards another 3 points. Which, if we look at the fixed leaderboard:
Image

Huh, guess we can't shrug off those Unicorns, but we're definitely in a good spot, to say the least! While Recuecn still retains the same point value as us, their win over Santa Regada was rather bittersweet, seeing as it pushed them a nice 6 points behind Qasden, temporarily narrowing down the major threats to 2 for the time being (I'd imagine I'm gonna eat those words). Still, it's oddly comforting to see faces like Valladares a little further from panicland.

Shoot, is that all? There's gotta be something to talk about. I mean, look at the other groups right now. Group N pretty much became the prime example of a clusterduck if I've ever seen one. Kita-Hinode's making a hot coal dash towards the top all of the sudden. Nephara freaking destroyed Ethane in almost every feasible way possible. Think that's about it, yeah. Qasden will travel to Caras next to face their national team in what I can assume is Silberburg(?). For the dragon-flagged squad, winning would mean the chance the get out of last place and escape elimination for a day. For the Qads, a win would mean trying to shoo Recuecn away from the top. Can the Vans keep up this sudden hype I poorly described? Will Macron Abbott be mentioned more in future articles? Could somebody please fire Carl the Graphic Guy? All this and more when you stay tuned, stay updated, and stay alert!

Twelfth Man <3 Man In Twelve
By Rami Niblick in Emberton

THE Cyan Army are a wonderful bunch. The official supporters' association of the national team, so often vociferous in songs (and usually troubling the charts around May of any given World Cup year) have taken it upon themselves to nominate Krytenia's candidate for the organisers' Team of the Tournament. After much deliberation, none of which we assume involved the mention of Gareth Brannan without much heaping of invective, they decided on the Dragons' midfield maestro: Stephen Mariner.

The accolade is not undeserved. Mariner has been so adept at orchestrating the Krytenian midfield that it's honestly surprising he doesn't take to the field with a baton in his hand. His performances have invigorated the side, turning a campaign that was beginning to look like a repeat of the disaster of World Cup LXXXII into one with a real chance of qualification. The Dragons have now won five games in a row, and stand just one point of the top of the group.

Hopefully this will serve as a confidence boost as the side prepare for the visit of Mercedini in their most important game of qualifying tomorrow evening. The Isserson Olympic Stadium is unsurprisingly sold out for what the Cyan Army hope is their first victory over the Golden Eagles at the fourth time of asking. If they manage that, then the road to the promised land is theirs to travel. Onward!

Trial of Jacob Brackers, Part 2

Bailiff: "WIll all come to order in the matter of People of South Covello v. Jacon Brackers, Honorable Judge Lucinda Pringle presiding, please rise"

All rise, Judge Pringle enters, all sit

Lucinda Pringle: "Good morning all, court is in session at 8:59 AM. We're one minute early today, that's a nice change. Let the record reflect that, please. Mr. McLean, are you ready to begin?"

Daxter McLean: "Yes. Your Honor."

Lucinda Pringle: "Good, you may call your first witness.

Daxter McLean: "The People call Daniel Hallerman."

The bailiff leads Hallerman into the courtroom and up to the witness stand.

Lucinda Pringle: "Raise your right hand, Mr. McLean. Do you solemnly swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?"

Daniel Hallerman: "I do."

Lucinda Pringle: "Mr. McLean, proceed, please.:

Daxter McLean: "Let's start with the easy questions, shall we? Could you please state your name for the record?"

Daniel Hallerman: "That's Daniel, not Dan, Hallerman with two L's and one N."

Daxter McLean: "And Mr. Hallerman, who is your employer?"

Daniel Hallerman: "The National Security Service, sir."

Daxter McLean: "And for those on the jury who are unfamiliar with the function of the NSS, can you enlighten us, please?"

Daniel Hallerman: "Well, we have many functions, we guard buildings of the federal government, ranging from the Legislative Building to the Weather Service Building, basically any government building, however important."

Daxter McLean: "And do you guard people as well?"

Daniel Hallerman: "Yes, we guard the President, his spouse, his children, former Presidents, their spouses and minor children - not their adult children though."

Daxter McLean: "And what about Presidents-elect?"

Daniel Hallerman: "Yes, sir, as well as all major Presidential candidates as we get closer to the election."

Daxter McLean: "Which candidates, if any, were designated as 'major' candidates in the election that just happened?"

Daniel Hallerman: "Well, of course, there's the incumbent, David Hale, though he'd be entitled to protection anyway, and then there was Carter Redwin."

Daxter McLean: "And those were the only two?"

Daniel Hallerman: "Yes, sir."

Daxter McLean: "So, to clarify, your employer was not and never was responsible for the security of such minor candidates as Moses the Pant Ferret and Busty Daniels?"

Daniel Hallerman: "That is correct, we did not protect Ms. Daniels nor Mr. ah, Mr. Pant Ferret I guess it would be."

Daxter McLean: "And to be perfectly clear, when Mr. Hale ran for President the first time, and he wasn't the incumbent, he had your agency's protection then, too?"

Daniel Hallerman: "Yes, that's correct. As did Louise Bennett and Clara Santos."

Daxter McLean: "So all three candidates who were commonly regarded as major?"

Daniel Hallerman: "Yes, that's correct."

Daxter McLean: "But again, not such minor candidates as Rodent Supremi, Shiny McToothface, or our old friend Mr. Pant Ferret?"

Daniel Hallerman: "That's correct. Mr. Supremi, Ms. McToothface, and Mr. Pant Ferret never received NSS protection."

Daxter McLean: "So why is it, then, that candidates like Mr. Redwin or Mr. Hale - the first time around, that is - receive NSS protection, but candidates like Mr. Pant Ferret or Ms. McToothface do not?

Daniel Hallerman: "Simply put, major Presidential candidates are far more likely to be the target of an assassination attempt than random also-rans. There are dozens if not hundreds of candidates who run for President each election, we simply can't afford to protect all of them. But we can't afford not to protect the major ones.

Daxter McLean: "Are there any other reasons your agency protects the major candidates?"

Daniel Hallerman: "Simply put, an attack on a Presidential candidate is an attack on democracy. Were a candidate to be assassinated, it could potentially throw our country into chaos."

Daxter McLean: "Shifting gears now, in what role if any were you serving in for the NSS on Election Night?"

Daniel Hallerman: "I was serving as a member of Carter Redwin's security detail."

Daxter McLean: "And did any incidents occur that night that would fall under your purview?"

Daniel Hallerman: "Yes."

Daxter McLean: "Please describe this incident or incidents."

Daniel Hallerman: "At approximately 11:30 PM, Mr. Redwin, by that point President-elect Redwin, took the stage to give his victory speech. As it concluded, a man fatally shot President-elect Redwin in the chest."

Dalia Scottson: "Objection! Mr. Hallerman is not the medical examiner, he cannot testify as to what killed Mr. Redwin!"

Lucinda Pringle: "Sustained, Mr. Hallerman, please rephrase your answer so as not to speculate as to Mr. Redwin's cause of death."

Daniel Hallerman: "I'm sorry, Your Honor. as I was saying, as President-elect Redwin's speech concluded, a man shot him in the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene a few minutes later."

Daxter McLean: "Now, where were we? Oh yes, were you able to identify the man who shot President-elect Redwin?"

Daniel Hallerman: "Yes, we identified the man as Jacob Brackers, that man over there." points to defendant

Daxter McLean: "Let the record reflect that the witness identified the defendant as the shooter. Moving on, after identifying Mr. Brackers as the shooter, what if anything did you proceed to do?"

Daniel Hallerman: "Myself and two other agents - Johan Sorle and Terry McPee - we apprehended Mr. Brackers and took him into custody?"

Daxter McLean: "And what if anything did you proceed to do after that?"

Daniel Hallerman: "We took the suspect to the local NSS field office, informed him of his rights, and asked him if he wished to make a statement."

Daxter McLean: "And did Mr. Brackers admit to killing President-elect Redwin?"

Daniel Hallerman: "Yes, he did."

Daxter McLean: "No further questions."

Lucinda Pringle: "The time is now 10:09 AM. Court is in recess until 10:25 for jurors and parties to the case to use the restroom, get a drink, or whatever. Members of the jury, I instruct you not to discuss the details of this case with each other or anyone else until you are told to do so. Mr. Hallerman, please do not discuss your testimony with anyone either. Court is in recess."

Approximately 15 minutes later

Lucinda Pringle: "We are back in session at 10:26 AM. Ms. Scottson, are you ready?"

Dalia Scottson: "Yes, Your Honor."

Lucinda Pringle: "Then proceed. Mr. Hallerman, I remind you that you are still under oath."

Dalia Scottson: "So, before we left for the recess, you testified that Jacob Brackers confessed to killing Mr. Redwin, correct?"

Daniel Hallerman: "Correct, ma'am."

Dalia Scottson: "What motive, if any, did Jacob Brackers give for killing him?"

Daniel Hallerman: "He stated that Mr. Redwin would become a tyrant, execute his political opponents, and launch a genocide against various minorities."

Dalia Scottson: "In those exact words?"[/b]

Daniel Hallerman: "Something like that."

Dalia Scottson: "Now, you were present for Mr. Redwin's victory speech, correct?[/b]

Daniel Hallerman: "Yes, of course, it was my job to be there."

Dalia Scottson: And did Mr. Redwin say, during that speech, that he would bring back the death penalty in blatant defiance - McLean rises to object to this characterization but Scottson "corrects" herself before he can - opposition to the Constitution?

Daniel Hallerman: "Yes, he did say that."

Dalia Scottson: "And with regards to the Constitution, didn't he say, and forgive me for my language, Your Honor, but this is a direct quote, 'Fuck the Constitution'?"

Daniel Hallerman: "Yes, I recall him saying that."

Dalia Scottson: "And of the Legislature, didn't he say 'Fuck Them Too' and promise to dissolve and abolish it the second he took office?"

Daniel Hallerman: "Yes, he said that too."

Dalia Scottson: "Now, who did he say would be the first to face this new death penalty?"

Daniel Hallerman: "President David Hale."

Dalia Scottson: "Did he call him David Hale?"

Daniel Hallerman: "No."

Dalia Scottson: "President Hale, then?"

Daniel Hallerman: "No."

Dalia Scottson: "What did he call him, then?"

Daniel Hallerman: "He referred to President Hale as, quote 'Presidentress al-Jabari'."

Dalia Scottson: This in reference to his baseless cosnpiracy theory that David Hale is a gay, transgender, Muslim whose goal is to destroy South Covello?"

Daniel Hallerman: "Yes, that is my understanding of it."

Dalia Scottson: "And who else, if anyone, did he say would receive the death penalty?"

Daniel Hallerman: 'The Legislature, all his political opponents, and various minorities."

Dalia Scottson: "Among them, and once again I quote directly from Mr. Redwin's speech, 'the Muslims, Jews, immigrants, homosexuals, atheists, blacks, and all others who aren’t real South Covellans', isn't that right?"

Daniel Hallerman: "I don't recall the exact order he mentioned those groups, but pretty much, yes."

Dalia Scottson: "Now, you were with Mr. Redwin on the campaign trail, correct?"

Daniel Hallerman: "Towards the end, yes."

Dalia Scottson: "And during the course of this campaign, did Mr. Redwin express any sentiment in contradiction to what he expressed that night?"

Daniel Hallerman: "Not that I recall."

Dalia Scottson: "In fact, it was full of the same racist, xenophobic, sexist, anti-immigrnat, anti-Semitic, Islamophobic, homophobic, undemocratic rhetoric he expressed that night, correct?"

Daxter McLean: "Objection! Leading the witness!"

Dalia Scottson: "I've laid an adequate foundation, Your Honor."

Lucinda Pringle: "Agreed, answer the question, Mr. Hallerman."

Daniel Hallerman: "As best as I could tell, yes."

Dalia Scottson: "No further questions for this witness."

Lucinda Pringle: "Redirect, Mr. McLean?"

Daxter McLean: "No, Your Honor."

Lucinda Pringle: "Very well, the time is now 12:23. Court is in recess until 1:30. Enjoy your lunch, everyone."

In the afternoon, the jury heard testimony from Claire Hannigan, the medical examiner, about the exact cause of death of Mr. Redwin, describing each split second of the shooting in graphic detail. On cross-examination, she admitted that Mr. Redwin would not have felt any pain before dying and that the shooting seemed to be done in a way to minimize the possibility that someone other than Redwin would die. Eventually, her testimony finished and Judge Pringle sent the jury home for the day a little after 5 PM. The jury would hear from several minor witnesses for the prosecution the following day. Then there was the weekend, and on Monday came their big finale - they were going to call Melanoma Redwin, Carter's widow, who was present when her husband was killed and was an immigrnat herself.

Double Bill

THROWING IT ALL AWAY
Abaja 4-3 New Lusitania
@ Grand Centre Park, Queens, M.L. (Att: 50 972)

After what can only best be remembered as a result which had potential but failed to deliver, New Lusitania travelled to Abaja. Patríce would start in goal with Guerreiros, Leiteiro and Cancela in defence, Nevais filling the position in-between them and Mário,Fernando and Gama in midfield. Finally, Silveira and Jota would play up front. For the home side, Ayuza would fill the position between the sticks, with Kekulé, Beddain, Mbanefo and Udoh and defence, Anekwe, Yar'Adua, Boateng in the middle of the park with Esé, Al-Farouq and Atsi as the day's forwards. The first goal came fairly early on fifteen minutes of play, with Al-Farouq getting the ball in off the post after a confusing play in the box - Abaja led. However, the Selecção soon sprung back at them through a counter-attack with Fernando pushing a through ball to Silveira who put it away promptly. New Lusitania would get themelves in the driver's seat just before halftime with Silveira scoring his second with a powerful shot after an assist by Veiga from the flank. Halftime and it was 2-1 to the away side. With play resuming, Abaja was ready to go. One of the main dangers of their side is the extremely fast nature of the forward players, as captain Atsi proved on his cross to Dedena Esé for him to head the equaliser. New Lusitania started to crack psychologically after that goal. Undeterred however, Fernando managed to score his second goal of the qualifiers with a great pass from youngster Veiga. At the helm once more, they still had a glimpse of hope. However, Abaja had a corner on seventy five minutes of play which saw their third goal to make it all even, when Atsi volleyed it in perfectly with Patríce still laying a few fingers to it. Victor Santa Cruz, looking at the way the Abajans were playing fresher than the Lusitanians decided to add Carriça to defence taking Nevais out, going to an unusual 4-3-1-2. A few minutes later, Mário would concede a free kick to Abaja, which usually isn't their strong suit. Boateng would take it but opted for a side pass to Yar'Adua who would score the winner for Abaja as Mário looked blankly after the foul against the kick taker that gave him a yellow and cost them a valuable point. In the end, not much could've been done with the whistle blowing after another two minutes, with New Lusitania complicating their situation.
FULL TIME: 4-3.

A PRISM OF UNFULFILLED OPPORTUNITIES
Crystalline Caverns 1-1 New Lusitania
@ Tempest Nook, Mraz (Att: 36 859)

After a week out of proceedings, meaning they would keep their game in hand, New Lusitania faced a second travel in a row, this time to the Crystalline Caverns. Mraz would host the 85th ranked home side this cycle and was a warm welcome in an otherwise cold mountainous country. As per usual, Terrano would start with Arik, Timour, Starkeysa and Kujesmart in the back four, Castellini, Tovnia, Dortmund and Zircon would play with Wavers sitting it out this time, as Smoker and Phirestone would take up their two usual positions up front. For the away side, only one change as Horta would come up from the backups as a test to tonight, taking Breu temporarily out of the team after a training injury. Mraz hosted a goalless first half which had great chances by Silveira and Fernando on one side whilst Smoker hit the bar. Phirestone had gone just wide and Horta had looked to impress giving the goalkeeper something to do at one point. In the second half, the Crystalline Caverns scored their goal with the credit going to Phirestone after a good pass from Castellini. However just before the final whistle, Gama managed to do a great run which had initiated in Fernando's avid eye for passing, giving New Lusitania a point, which could've been so much more.
FULL TIME: 1-1

Here & Around the Grounds
Victor Santa Cruz ended up saying it was a "fair result" as it had "been a game in which either side could've won and you each side upon reflection would say I could've won but I could've lost". Between the two matchdays, New Lusitania now fell down a frustrating fourth. Abaja had beaten The Frostac Wolves by 2-1 in the previous Matchday and had now beaten Rakivland 0-2 meaning they were gleefully in 2nd. Cassadaigua had beaten New Karelograd 4-1 and sat out the current Matchday, still at the top (as if there had ever been any doubt?)
Meanwhile, Bengaliana had managed to lose to Rakivland 0-1 but then beat New Karelograd in their first competitive win by the same result. Cassadaigua now only have a Point's difference to second placed Abaja although they have a game in hand over the team below. The Crystalline Caverns are three points below with the Selecção in fourth with the same number of games as Cassadaigua and 3 points under third and a record four draws. Rakivland can dream, a point behind the Equipa de Todos Nós and New Karelograd and Bengaliana have made some points with the former having two wins and the latter a win and a draw, and, already mathematically confirmed not to win the group. New Lusitania now hope on Rakivland not taking fourth as they play them at home, at the Estádio de Coimbra in the Academical city of Knowledge of the same name.

First Ever Home Win

by Tufan Nursultan

Timuria 3–1 Kiryu-shi
Ertan Renda (22), Vatan Ercetin (42), Yusuf Ihsanoglu (69);Kiryu-shi #9 (60)

The national team earned a vital and convincing win in front of an electrified home crowd at Maden-Is Stadium as they maintained their small winning streak with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Kiryu-shi. The victory they earned was the national team's first ever victory on home soil and it was naturally very well received. The result meant the national team kept pace with 95X and remain in a position to challenge for the playoff spot.

The match began with the visitors on the defensive, Caner Turan caused trouble early on, however his end product was very lackluster an issue that would rear its ugly head for him and mar his performance in this match. The deadlock was broken by Ertan Renda who was somehow left wide open at the edge of the box where he was able to pick his spot and put the national team up 1-0. Then came a period of relative dominance, with the visitors unable to muster any significant opportunities being smothered by a rejuvenated defence.

Just before the break, Vatan Ercetin who had been having a difficult day, managed to spring the offside trap and with the goalkeeper at his mercy chipped the ball over them and doubled the national team's lead. The capacity crowd, clearly enjoying the match began to cheer on the "Red Wolves" which has now become a popular nickname for the national team and went viral.

After the break, the national team continued to show their greater class, but were wasteful in front of goal yet again. Iskender Nur was called upon to make a series of saves as the visitors sought to get a foothold in the match. They would eventually pull a goal back with a header that looped over Iskender Nur who put up a valiant effort to prevent the goal. The scoring was rounded off by a rare goal from Yusuf Ihsanoglu who struck a ball very well from 30 yards out which was slightly too much for the visitors keeper who allowed it to slip through their grasp into the goal.

Elsewhere in the group, 95X grabbed an important 2-0 victory against Kavagrad meaning their destiny is in their hands. Otherwise Balqia dropped critical points as they drew with cellar dwellers Lavize 2-2 meaning their fate is increasingly left to the fortunes of other teams.

What they said after the match:

Bekir Altingunes: "We're taking it one game at a time, this match we've got 3 points out of 3 and that's what matters. I think the defence looked much much more solid than it has in previous matches and that's only a good thing. It was only a matter of time before the defence settled and began to be a solid contributor to winning instead of an obstacle.

Player Ratings:

Iskender Nur 7/10 - He had a good day between the sticks and has staked a very legitimate claim to the number 1 job. It will be interesting to see him cope with a high pressure game after the bye.

Ozbek Sarikaya 6/10 - A boring if solid day. His consistency is impressive, even if his performances are not.

Metin Boz 7/10 - Had a very good match, completely smothering the opposition.

Eyup Mustafa 7/10 - Formed a very good partnership with Metin Boz, the pair may well be the go to starting pair from now on.

Gokdeniz Dag 6/10 - Another dull day in the wide positions as the opposition wingers never got going.

Atilla Acar 7/10 - Energetic as always, he was critical between the boxes and really ran the opposition ragged.

Yusuf Ihsanoglu 7/10 - Got a rare goal and was a contributer both offensively and in defence.

Caner Turan 6/10 - Had a difficult day, but was an adequate contributer.

Ertan Renda 8/10 - Had another excellent day and looked really good value for his goal.

Tayyar Ozel 6/10 - Had a rather weak game, but did make the opposition defence mildly uncomfortable on occasion.

Vatan Ercetin 7/10 - Returned to scoring ways after struggling against Kavagrad.

Substitutes:

Beyhan Enver 6/10 - Replaced a tired looking Ozbek Sarikaya and performed fairly well.

Hakan Diren 6//10 - Replaced goalscorer Yusuf Ihsanoglu and showed he could still contribute.

Man of the match: Ertan Renda - He had an excellent match as he often does, but this time it was an astounding individual effort. He has quickly become the main conduit through which the national team likes to run their attacks and he's shown that he's more than capable of excelling in such an important role.

Some rare double good news for readers interested in our promotion, the editors got the result correct (though not the score sadly) and the national team recorded a win. This means 10 lucky people will win 10,000 Demirs come the end of the qualification campaign if things remain as they are.

Schedule and editor's predictions with the results so far:
MD1: vs Kavagrad, Manat School Sports Centre, L 0-2, Result: D 1-1
MD2: @ Kiryu-shi, W 1-0, Result: W 4-3
MD3: Bye
MD4: vs 95X, Tim-Enerji Park, L 0-3, Result: L 2-3
MD5: @ Balqia D 2-2, Result: D 3-3
MD6: vs Valanora, Hisar School Field of Excellence, L 1-4, Result: L 3-5
MD7: @ Lavize D 1-1, Result W: 4-3
MD8: @ Kavagrad L 1-3, Result W 3-2
MD9: vs Kiryu-shi, Maden-Is Stadium W 2-0, Result W 3-1
MD10: Bye
MD11: @ 95X L 0-4
MD12: vs Balqia, Manat School Sports Centre D 1-1
MD13: @ Valanora L 0-4
MD14: vs Lavize, Belediye Park W 1-0

Total points won: 10

The next match: Following this essential victory, the national team will go to 95X for what will likely be one of the decisive matches that will determine who will be the playoff team from Group R. The starting XI will remain unchanged from this match, with Bekir Altingunes apparently feeling comfortable with this lineup.

John wasn't expecting doctor Mercer's office to look how it did. It was formal and sterile at the same time. There were no personal touches, the walls were magnolia and the only thing on those walls was Mercer's doctorate. The chairs were brown and arranged in a triangle, with one behind a small desk that was kept immaculately. No spec of dust, no sign of books not even a ring from a coffee cup.

Mercer himself was a little unkempt. He had a greying beard with a few straggly hairs longer than the others, his jacket didn't match his pants and when he crossed his legs John could see that there was a hole in the sole of his brown leather shoe. He leaned forward and tented his fingers when he spoke and when he listened he narrowed his eyes and bobbed his head. He was very invested in what John was saying, or that was the impression being given.

He was sat in one of the chairs away from the desk and leaned forward, looking John deep in the eyes. "So, in these dreams, how do you feel?"

"Terrified." John paused. "They feel so real. Like I'm right there. It doesn't feel like a dream. And then when I wake up it haunts me. There's no getting away from it."

"No getting away from it?"

"It stays with me. It's always there.“

Mercer leaned closer, his fingers in a pyramid. "Is there anything else, in your waking life, that's always there?" he extended his arms around the room in a slow motion fashion, blowing up the pyramid.

"Well, there's my parents, but they just want what's best for me."

Mercer couldn't lean any closer without invading John's personal space so hovered where he was. "Tell me about your parents?"

John was beginning to feel a little uncomfortable as Mercer hovered nearby. They were so close he could count the doctor's eye lashes. There was nobody else in the vicinity, John's mum had dropped him off and chose not to wait in the waiting, instead she'd parked up and taken herself for coffee at the chain store over the road from the office. A generic Americano with skimmed milk while her only son spoke to a therapist. Mercer's receptionist had left a little while ago, John was the last client and she didn't need to stick around. That's why nobody other than John and Mercer responded to the sudden static crackling that filled the room. It buzzed and reverberated in their skulls, leaving their eyes twitching. The two sat, clutching the arm rests, their knuckles turning white as they gripped tightly. Suddenly a blinding light filled the room and between the pair stood an exact replica of Mercer holding a weapon. John and the other Mercer sat frozen. The new Mercer looked at the other one, sat in front of him and shot two rounds into his chest. A large sheet of ice encased him, leaving him statuesque.

"John Conrad, come with me if you want to exist."

It’s that time of the tournament again, where we’ve scraped the bottom of the barrel for the absolute worst memes in the multiverse. Prepare your sides to be (thankfully) unsplit, and your ribs left untickled. No cracking up or uproarious laughter, just a slight chance of exhaling from your nostrils quicker than usual. Here’s the memes that made the list:

Here at Golazo we’re not even sure if this constitutes as a meme, but it was the least upvoted thing we found on a virus-laden chat site. This is an actual, direct quote from Craig so I don’t see the humour here.

This one did have 49k likes, buuut we found it on Instacram, so it automatically qualifies for comedy cemetery.

I’m fairly sure this was made by an Audioslavia expat.

And that’s it for this round, hope to see you never again. Maybe Brusseldorf would get better at memes if we stopped spending so much time playing football. I guess that can’t be a bad thing?

Tropicorp look to make TCp-X1s Official Ball of World Cup 83

Image

Tropicorp Sports Headquarters, Tropicoast, Tropicorp :: The quasi-governmental entity Tropicorp will be celebrating fifteen cycles of partnership with the World Cup through its Tropicorp Sports TCp-X product line and hope to do so by extending their relationship as the Official Match Ball provider for the World Cup Finals. Tropicorp Sports had continued to evolve its product line from the TCp-X1 which was introduced for the World Cup 68 Finals, through to the TCp-X2 which saw many years of research pumped into a revolutionary design change when comparing to Tropicorps original balls. The TCp-X2 was advertised as the world's most advanced and adaptable ball when it was released with the ability to adjust its casing based on the ambient temperature; providing a player with a more natural feel to the touch as well as the ability to propel itself with unrivaled fluid dynamic properties when given the optimum impulse. The TCp-X2 was, in fact, so succesful that it was literally a game changer on the field causing some traditionalists to unite in an outcry that the ball be banned from internationstatal sporting competitions. Footsport players had always prided themselves as having not allowed the technology to take center stage in the sport the way it had in Motorsport, Golf and other equipment centric sporting events. In Footsport, they wanted it to be about the players on the pitch. As a result, despite the significant technical advancements, some leagues around the multiverse banned the use of the TCp-X2 as 'too advanced for the game'. Some players also complained about the TCp-X2's extraordinary ability to adapt to its surroundings as for years players have had to do the adapting on behalf of the ball, being familiar with how temperature and conditions would affect the way they needed to strike the ball, having a ball that itself would adapt to those conditions was forcing players to change the way they played.

Tropicorp Sports decided to avoid any prolonged litigation and bad press for its TCp-X2 line by reverting back to its roots in the design and development of the TCp-X1 Special or TCp-X1s for short. While the TCp-X1s marked a departure from the generational product line development that led to the TCp-X2, the TCp X1s took advantage of years of development without some of the embedded technological enhancements to keep the look and feel of the original TCp-X1 balls that made their debut during World Cup 68. The TCp-X1 Special would become the official Ball of the EqueStar World Cup 80 and would reprise the same role in Banija and the Free Republics World Cup 81. Another feature of the TCp-X1s is the customizable hexagonals allowing teams to easily decorate the face panels with their team colors or logo as desirable.

Since its debut during World Cup 80, the TCp-X1s has become a popular choice for sporting competitions multiverse wide and a retail version known as the TS-X1s has become one of the highest grossing balls in a year over year time period. Given the status of the TCp-X1s as the ball of choice for many football associations, Tropicorp Sports will once again be putting forth the Tropicorp TCp-X1s as the Official Match Ball of the World Cup 83 Finals.

If selected as the Official Match Ball of World Cup 83, a fresh sack of TCp-X1s balls will be delivered to all World Cup 83 venues prior to each match held at that location. TCp-X1s balls will be provided at no charge to the World Cup 83 Organizing committee in quantity such that they will not need to be re-used from match to match. Balls can be marked with a World Cup 83 logo designed by Tropicorp Sports partner group 3WD or with the colors of the host nation(s) and a commemorative insignia. Delivered Balls can also be marked with the names of the competing teams and the match venue in addition a serial number making each match ball unique and trackable should any ball come into question or appear later on the secondary market against organizing committee intent.

Internationstatal Footsport Associations who do not already use Tropicorp Balls in their competitions but looking to add the TCp-X1 Special to their equipment inventory can place an order through their local Tropicorp Sports representative.

Recap of Matchday 8: Chromatika 3-1 Port Ember @ The Capitalizt Dome, Chromatik City, Chromatika (Cap. 144,000)
Goals: Sierra '27, Andisori, B. '49, Gail '78
Starting XI: Ria; Ruth - Will - Anderson - Austic; Thorben - Mora - Armageddon - Han; Sierra (C) - Andisori, B.
Substitutes: Gail -> Sierra ('52), de Aea -> Will ('66), Croix-Pierre -> Han ('83)
Recap: Chromatika enjoyed the sweet comforts of home as they flummoxed the Embrians to a dominant three-one win. Though Port Ember did have what was undoubtedly the goal of the match - a mid-range shot from Steve Rogers - the duo of Hermaeus Mora and Enigma Armageddon were literally everywhere. Sweet revenge for the first match.

Preview of Matchday 9: Chromatika @ Competitive Solitaire
Starting XI: Williams; McBee - Will - Anderson - Damjana; Etienne - Montague (C) - Dias - Conrad; Vidal - Bird.
Preview: Another stop on the revenge tour will be a visit to Competitive Solitaire, another team who held the Chromatiks to a draw the first time. Giving veterans like Aysu and Alyss valuable time to play alongside youngsters like Will, Anderson, and Dias is a good step toward the future; the match against Qusmo looms in the future.

One of Silian Parker's quirks of being a manager was refusing to speak to his players after the match until they'd all taken a shower. This meant that it sometimes took a half hour after all interviews before the team would meet to wrap things up, and this was no exception.

As Rowena Sierra slid into the last chair - she had been waylaid by a whole lot of media following her goal that had set the mood - Silian Parker turned to his squad.

"Consistency. That is what the game tonight showed me. We did not miss a single beat after the four-game winning streak to end the first half, despite the losses to Turori and Cosumar in the interim. Mia, don't worry too much about that goal - sometimes, you just get got. Kattie and Cierra - nice improvement. Strikers, well done. Go and get some rest - we can't let pressure up on Qusmo."

With that and a wave, the room cleared, save one small player who remained. Dyed brown hair, diminutive stature, yet commanding authority, it was Keira Andisori, the team's Captain.

When she verified that everyone had left - even Alyss Montague - she made eye contact with Silian, and he knew something was up. There was a look that Andisori got when things were serious politically - a look of pure hatred.

"Sil," she began, "Have you read the news lately?"

Silian scratched his head. Andisori never called him Sil unless things were really that serious. It was her way of warning him. Parker wasn't the sort to frequent the web much, but he did enjoy his papers. And in recent memory, he hadn't read anything too odd or peculiar.

"No," he answered, "What is on your mind, K.A.?"

"Jordan hasn't written in a while. He was doing that series that he had always said he would once we returned - about us, what we'd doing. He was just starting to write about Trenn. The first part made it through, but the second part never made it to the internet. He told me before that he was going to expose The Checkers Party to be an arm of our old friend," she panned out, her gaze narrowing, "I'm afraid that The Rainbow Revolution isn't over."

"What?" Silian exclaimed, panicking, "Not over? But we won! Alina is in office! The Reds, Oranges, and Yellows are starting to get back into society! How could it not be over?"

"I always had an inkiling in the back of my mind, and so did Alina, that it wasn't over," explained Keira, "Because we never caught HIM."

"Who are you talking about? We got the DG!" stated Parker, trying to find some solace.

"Yes, we did get Heidi. But we didn't get the root of it all, and now HE's back."

Keira Andisori took a deep breath. She knew that even speaking the entity's name was to give it power. But there was no way to deny the truth.

"Venom has resurfaced."

Bees put to the stake
by Frank Armitage
The Daily Mail Chief Soccer Writer

Reporting from New Lodger City, Eastfield Lodge:

The BP National Team paid dearly for two lapses in concentration defensively and fell for the first time in this World Cup Qualifying to Eastfield Lodge 4-3, here at the Memorial Stadium in front a full house of over 100 thousand.

The defeat ended a run of 14 consecutive unbeaten matches in WC play, and the also was the Black & Gold's first defeat in 22 competitive matches, both streaks going back to WCQ 82 after a 3-2 defeat to Dreamplanet.

The victory brings the hosts within 4 points of the top of the table in Group I, and just as they have gained momentum, they now have a bye for matchday 10.

Terrence Stephens was the only change to the starting lineup that faced the same side at Sportsman's Park, in place of Sarah Foreman in defense, but the results were much different, as the Eastfielders were brighter in attack and took advantage of several poorly played ball in the BP half of midfield which led to numerous scoring chances against Caroline Gordon, who faced 18 shots, 11 on target.

Manager Pam Scott used 2 of her substitutes on defensive changes in the second half, with Lorenzo Taborn sacrificed for Pryna Rasanamira, and Emily Arnold coming on for Stephens, who had a wretched night all around. Ultimately, BP could not hang on for an away point, conceding in the final 5 minutes when Raquel Accardi found a gap low to the far post, setting off wild celebrations among the home supporters.

Post-match comments:
Manager Pam Scott--"we knew this was going to be a tough ask. We've been off, had a bye the first day and come into a place where the team are hungry and they know they are playing the leaders. This is what it's about for us now, we aren't plucky underdogs anymore; this was just a....not a poor performance, but a sloppy one. We haven't thrown in a clunker for awhile, it happens."

Jamari Bozeman--"I'm pretty unhappy right now, because we should've beat this team, and we hung Car-Go (keeper Caroline Gordon) out to dry because of sloppiness, and I'm first in line for that criticism."

captain Nick Haller--"we were far too casual with the ball in the center of the pitch, and I think the four of us (Westmoreland, Taborn & Navarro) know we didn't cover ourselves in glory tonight."

Part 1
Part 2

Town of Cragg
Bellight, Mareibat

The BPA’s new heroes had enjoyed a night of debauchery in nearby Cragg to celebrate their successful attack on what they believed to be a warship of the Apoxian Navy. Hangovers and headaches dominated the next morning, but by the afternoon everyone was on their feet again. Cain was the only one not to drink, a teetotaller, and was leaving early in the morning. He ran into Darder and Driscoll outside the public house he had stayed in overnight. The young soldiers were rather green at the gills but happy nonetheless. He gave them a cordial nod which they returned, and then went on his way. It was unusual for him to get some real time alone – his handler hadn’t joined the old Sameban for this trip. As he drove north in a four by four jeep, an extremely useful and strangely rare vehicle on this island, Cain saw a glimmer in the sky to his left. Instinctively he pulled over and got out. He’d stopped in the hills and it took a short walk up to a ridge to see what was going on. What he saw caused the hairs on his neck to bolt up straight.

ENS Swifton was still out there, smouldering now rather than outright burning, however it was no longer alone. Two ships were nearby that he instantly recognised as Euran Skirmisher class frigates. Towing the stranded Swifton was an even larger vessel, a salvage ship, and several tugs. He reached for his binoculars and tried to get a closer look. No luck; the mist and gathering of ships around the destroyer made it impossible to see any level of detail. ‘Hey, wait up!’ Cain spun around and drew his pistol in one clean motion having been taken by surprise. It was a false alarm. Those two idiots from Cragg had followed him on a quadbike of some sort. ‘Come to look at the damage sir?’
‘I bet those colonialist bastards are still reeling!’ Cain shook his head with a wry smile. ‘Well, why don’t you take a look yourself and see what our handiwork has done?’ The two young men enthusiastically bounded forward to get a better look. ‘I wish we could get closer, see the miserable looks on their thick Esportivan faceeesss-ohhh fuuuck!’

Beyond the handful of ships surrounding Swifton, a small Euran fleet had gathered further out into the straits. There had to be at least a dozen escorting destroyers and frigates, at least one submarine surfaced and probably more underneath, support vessels and oilers, and the unmistakeable silhouette of a massive nuclear aircraft carrier parked on the horizon. ‘Where the fuck have they come from?!’ Cain already knew the answer and was beginning to regret his enthusiasm for giving the Euran’s a bloody nose. ‘We hit the wrong target. The ship was Euran. That’s a carrier battle group. They can’t have magically turned up from Falourr or somewhere overnight so it must be the Fifth Group.’
‘How would you know?’
‘I have contacts over there. They told me that particular fleet was to begin running the straits for the duration of the crisis within days. Looks like they got here a day too late for their comrades.’
‘Shit! What do we do?’ Cain thought hard for a moment about that question. It wasn’t any easy one to answer. ‘Well, us three are going to report this force’s arrival. But what our People’s Army must do? Nothing.’
‘Nothing?’ Darder couldn’t believe what he was hearing. ‘Yes. We don’t stand a chance against them head on and they haven’t retaliated yet. Let’s wait and see what their next move is.’ The men climbed back into the jeep and set off for Bellight city itself. Cain was wisely starting to think about that exit strategy.

Joint Committee for National Security and Strategy (JCNSS)
Blackhall District, Bastion, Eura

No-one in the room for this JCNSS meeting was looking forward to Prime Minister Amy Yarley’s arrival. She was rumoured to be seething, steam coming out of her ears at the events near Mareibat the day before. Previous Prime Ministers would have never been able to imbue a sense of fear such as the one she had created. When she finally arrived, chief special advisor and communications director in tow, the entire room rose to attention as if she were a monarch. The running joke swimming around Blackhall was that she behaved like one and should be treated as such. ‘Please be seated.’ The predominantly male group obeyed immediately as she took her own seat. A softly patriarchal society like Eura was full of committees like this that responded to powerful women by acting like they were being mothered, hence their dutiful obedience. She seemed tired today. Even she, something of a political juggernaut, was beginning to lose that electable youthful sheen as her forties and time in office marched on. Still, the aura of terrifying authority remained. Ironically that was becoming counterproductive in forums like this, where challenge was a lot more valuable than craven pandering to authority.

Yarley patiently allowed others to settle in before she began. ‘Ok, thank you all for coming. I believe we are due on an update on the Swifton, who is going to fill us in?’ A particularly sea dog looking Admiral (even in a suit) weighed in to her right. ‘She’ll hold on. It was a nasty knock but the lads and lasses on board did a good job with their immediate damage control, avoided a VLS magazine explosion. Final death toll is going to be in the high teens.’
‘I want to know exactly how many before we mention it in any kind of speeches or a press conference.’ Her communications director furiously scribbled this down like his life depended on it. ‘Is it going to take long to salvage her?’
‘Possibly, she’ll need to be hauled to a port, we think Helving is the best place, and escorts will need to stay with her all the way. We’ve emptied the ship of the crew.’
‘Fine. And how did it happen, do we know yet? Why didn’t their countermeasures and that sort of thing prevent this? Is there error involved?’ The Admiral and his colleagues around him, deputising for the absent Naval Chief of Staff, shifted uncomfortably in their seats. This was the difficult question.

One of them tried to elaborate with a technical explanation of the event. She shut him down right off the bat. ‘I know how a bloody missile works! You seem to forget I governed us through much of the largest war in our history. What I want to know is, why couldn’t the ship protect itself? When the Defence Secretary needs to go in front of a parliamentary select committee I want him to have a good answer.’ The Defence Secretary happened to be sat next to her and nodded in agreement . The old Admiral decided give her a straighter answer. ‘In short ma’am, it’s a repeat problem with this class of ship. The CIWS, the last line of defence, was inoperable at the time of the attack, which happened a few times during the war. It’s a technical issue we delayed resolving throughout the class of ships because all of them need a refit to get it done. It was also much closer to shore than it should have been which we suspect is down to human error though the captain won’t admit it. There’s no way their radars were that off, they should’ve been forty miles out minimum under current Admiralty instructions.’
‘Would it have made a difference?’
‘It might have given them more reaction time. That said the CIWS wouldn’t have worked anyway.’
‘Right. That issue needs to be resolved then, even if it means recalling that class of ship across the board.’ She tapped her fingers on the table. A part of her was glad the answer hadn’t been that spending cuts were to blame. The polls wouldn’t punish her for the navy’s incompetence.

This discussion brought her onto the response. ‘I understand we’ll need to discuss this more fully once we have more thorough intelligence, however I believe we need to do something quickly as a stopgap. It will be unacceptable to look weak in the face of a rabble like the BPA. What are our options?’
‘We have Fifth Group on site in the straits. Once the Swifton is clear, we’ve identified a number of targets on the island that can be quickly engaged and destroyed. They have no combat air power and little in the way of anti-aircraft defences so it should be a low risk operation militarily. I’d be very surprised if we incur any casualties.’
‘This is just a handful of specific airstrikes and cruise missiles strikes then? Some intimidating flyovers? Have you discussed this with the government in Halholzer, and Apox?’
‘Yes ma’am. On who we are talking to, via backchannels, yes we have engaged. We think they are a little iffy about the aesthetics of us muscling in. They do understand however that we have to be seen to respond, and there’s no complaints about our expertise being deployed against the BPA. They’ll have to take the island back at some point after all.’
‘That sounds like an acceptable level of political and military risk, so you have my approval. I’ll be meeting cabinet shortly after this meeting and we’ll confirm it there. Thank you all.’ It had been a short and decisive session. Almost everyone present was relieved. They’d come expecting a bollocking, and instead got a firm nudge.

A DRAW FURTHERING US AWAY FROM THE DREAM;(

Yesterday the national team drew with Newmanistan. The revenge hasn't been made and the coach is angry that the team couldn't get 3 points, which would've improved our position on the table and made the situation a bit better for the team. Tomorrow the team will face Shatla, against which Lochario hopes to win

The Tridents Smashes San José Guayabal

Port Ember 5 - 1 San José Guayabal

By Erica Davies - Port Ember Times Sports Section

The Tridents have managed to pull of a 5 - 1 victory against San José Guayabal which was played this past wednesday in the San José Guayabal's home stadium.

Port Ember achieved this massive vicrory which forms part of the World Cup Qualifier Run, Group E. The Tridents were undergoing a period of struggle before this match, but have made their comeback looking better then ever. This result has placed them back in third place of the group table.

The Game - Summary

The match saw a Port Emberian side which was looking confident and overall just better than ever before, with a clear plan of dominating their opponents. This match was a pleasure to watch for all Port Emberian fans, as the team was on marvelous top form.

The game commenced with a kick off from San José Guayabal, who managed to look good and launch an extremely quick opening attack, catching the Tridents off guard, and managed a goal in minute 4.

This boosted the San José Guayabal side with confidence, which saw them launch continious and hard offences against the Port Emberian side, but to no avail. The strong Port Emberian defence managed shut down the attacks time after time which clearly frustrated the hosts. This hardline offenses mixed with frustration led to two mistakes which the Tridents capitalised on, scoring quick goals with deep counter attacks, in minutes 32 and 41. Both goals were set up by attacking midfielder and captain Reddington, who is freshly back from injury, and finished off by star striker Nicovic - also freshly back from injury. The Port Emberians managed to go into half time with a 2-1 lead, using their famous Bait Ambush tactics - although the opposition held 85% possession and territory, they were trailing. The opposition was clearly exhuasted and frustrated when they walked off for half time.

When the second half commenced, Port Ember made some surprising changes on the field - removing captain Reddington for William Carvello in the attacking midfield position; Steve Rogers was replaced by John Swift on the right flank midfield and Leon Moult was replaced by Ryan Bowman as striker.

The second half saw Port Ember display a different side to them, playing a confident and dominating offensive game, capitalising on their youth and fitness. An methaphorically on fire Tridents launched a barrage of attacks, never allowing their opponents to rest or recover, scoring a further 3 goals, with no further attempts at their own goal. Striker Bowman scored 2 goals in minutes 54 and 65, and star striker Nicovic scored in minute 83, which then saw the end of the match, with the opposition clearly being gratefull that the shamefull match has ended.

The Fans

Although the game was not played in Port Ember, the stadium was still filled with a large number of Trident's fans cheering loudly and supporting their team proudly.

Port Emberian Player Scores

Goalkeeper (GK)(#1): Peter Smith - 8/10. This legend was back on form, stopping 7 out of 8 shots at goal.

Center Back (CB)(#2): Josh Richards - 7/10. Confusingly, this player was back on form again afer the last two dissapointing matches. Managed to shut down offence after offence with technical brilliant timing and tackles for the full time he was on the field.

Center Back (CB)(#3): Jason Lee. 8/10. 'The Prince of the Backline' was back to his normal and expected good form and ruled the backline with a iron fist, constantly leading to the shutdown of opposition attacks.

Full Back (LB)(#4): Alex Kuhn - 7/10. Confusingly, this player was back on form again afer the last two dissapointing matches. Managed to shut down offence after offence with technical brilliant timing and tackles for the full time he was on the field.

Full Back (RB)(#5): Russel Pierce - 7/10. Confusingly, this player was back on form again afer the last two dissapointing matches. Managed to shut down offence after offence with technical brilliant timing and tackles for the full time he was on the field.

Attacking Midfield (AM)(#10): Ray Reddington - 8/10. The captain reassumed his starting position after recovering from his injury and immediately reminded the world of his greatness. He managed to lead the Tridents during the first half well, baiting the oposition into launching constant attacks which led them to exhuast themselves, and lead to two counter attack goals. He also led the midfield well in the defence.

Defensive Midfield (DM)(#6): Steven Packard - 7/10. Was instrumental in shutting down the constant attacks and setting up counter attacks.

Wide Midfield (LM)(#8): Jason Chamberlain - 7/10. Capitalised well against the tiring oponents in the second half, creating gaps in the left flank of the opponents defence time and again.

Wide Midfield (RM)(#11): Steve Rogers - 7/10. Managed to shut down counter attacks from the flanks regularly.

Central Forward (CF)(#7): Leon Moult - 8/10. His keen eye and fitness combined with his chemistry with he rest of the team allowed him to exhaust and frustrate the opposition endlessly in the first half.

Central Forward (CF)(#9): Danny Nicovic 9/10. The star striker made his value known in this game after recovering from his injury. Scored yet another clinical hatrick during the match, proving that he is one of the best syrikers in the world currently.

Player Scores - Substitutes

Attacking Midfield (AM)(#10): William Carvello - 8/10. Led the team in the second half, forcing the team to switch from a counter attack play to a full out attack play. He managed to capitalise on his opponents fatigue and frustration and assisted in the three goals which followed as a result. Although his playstyle and objectives differs from the legendary midfielder which he replaced, in his own terms, looked to be of equal skill.

Wide Midfield (RM)(#21): John Swift 7/10: Managed to bring new life to the right flank in the second half, helping the team to constantly launch attacks, not allowing the opposition to rest or launch follow up attacks.

Central Forward (CF)(#9): Ryan Bowman 8/10. Brought new fresh life into the front line in the second half, scoring two goals himself, and when paired with star striker Nicovic, was a nightmare to the opposition defence.

Aftermatch word from the Coach

"I am a bit shocked at the result myself. The last time we played this team we managed a very tough and difficult 1-0 win. This time we simply dominated them. Our team played with such a calm and collective mindset that nothing worried them, and they implimented a new playstyle which they are not even used to yet. But it worked wonders. Mattijana, after Jeruselem lost 3-2 to the hosts ... Princess Cassie and Princes Bianca

Cassie: Rough day at the office today
Bianca: Yeah ...
Cassie: A lot of traffic in the goal area
Bianca: I guess that what happens when most of your team are in the wrong half of the field when the ball is in the other half
Cassie: They were actually trying to score goals
Bianca: That's fine, could the defenders actually stay in their own half

Cassie: They did drift forward a bit too much
Bianca: I'm only like 5 foot something, I can't cover the whole bloody goal
Cassie: I guess it looks bad when you concede 3 goals a game
Bianca: Well what the scoreline doesn't say is I stopped like 6 goals
Cassie: It never really says that does it
Bianca: At least we scored goals today

Cassie: Well, from my perspective we should have won ... if they had actually scored from those shots they totally missed
Bianca: Well, they've been doing that all cup
Cassie: Saying that, the opposition keeper did great too
Bianca: Well, I had twice as much work to do
Cassie: You look like have headache
Bianca: You would if one of opposition headbutted you by accident

Cassie: That doesn't help with brain damage
Bianca: Unfortunately I don't have a Titanium steel skull so that's a thing
Cassie: Yeah, human bone is a bit brittle
Bianca: Ya don't say
Cassie: Well, we're pretty screwed. Two losses and a draw in the 2nd half and we only have like 3 games left
Bianca: We're only 2 points above last

Cassie: Yes well, there's four teams near last place.
Bianca: We're hosed, no doubt
Cassie: Well, I guess there's always the cup of harmony if we're invited
Bianca: Any good jobs at the Tel Aviv Sharks? Not as a player, you know management ...
Cassie: Actually we need a goalkeeping coach, we haven't had one for a while
Bianca: Why is that?

Cassie: Goal keepers are hard to find in the first place. You can't pick any idiot for a goal keeping coach.
Bianca: Well, does goal keeper for 2 world cups do as a resume?
Cassie: Actually finding anyone interested in becoming a goal keeper is difficult
Bianca: Well, I'll be applying. I assume competition is going be a bit sparse.
Cassie: What about other clubs?
Bianca: Eh, they've got funny attitude to goalkeepers for some reason. It's like they aren't that important.

Cassie: I think it's job left for people who aren't good at anything else according to them.
Bianca: Well until it comes to penalty kicks, then you need a good keeper. You need a good one anyway, so you don't need penalty kicks.
Cassie: The real reason is keepers get paid the least for some reason
Bianca: I don't need the money, thank God.
Cassie: Say, why don't you go work with your brother ... that banker guy
Bianca: Him, his business steals from people. He's a conman.

LOUDON LOUDMOUTH - Time to seriously think about something

by Chris Browning, Field Writer

Newmanistan is now nine games into World Cup qualifying, despite what that other publication is talking about and their beach soccer stuff still being stuck on matchday two. After drawing Lochario last night on a 86th minute Brent Chapman goal that set the Tundra Falls Proving Grounds into a wild party scene, Newmanistan has a 3-3-3 record. Given their rank, that record would be considered successful, but honestly, it might be time for a long hard discussion about something. Are the Rockets seriously in contention for a playoff spot?

Now, I don’t want you to start planning on a vacation to Banija or Equestrian States expecting to see us in the World Cup. This team will be Cup of Harmony bound, as long as we get an invite, which we should, I hope. No one knows where the Cup of Harmony will be right now, and I haven’t actually seen any bids for it, either. However, let’s talk about that playoff spot. This is a longshot discussion, but the team has earned the right for us to at least be talking about the scenario right now. With 12 points, Newmanistan is well behind the group leader, Cosumar. They have 21 points, and because they are running away with the group and having no one challenge them, we are able to have this discussion. In second, is Eshan. They have 13 points. Fourth is Lochario, who has 11. We would own the tiebreaker on Lochario, but each of those nations has a nagging game in hand on us. That’s the main problem, if we were the same in games played, our chances to finish second would be a lot better. All second place teams in the 24 groups head to a playoff. From there, six teams will advance and qualify for the World Cup. If the scenario played out and Newmanistan did finish second, actually getting through that playoff stage would be unlikely, but it would be a true honor to be a part of it. It would also show that Newmanistan soccer is respectable. That can continue to convince the Emperor to have us keep coming back into this thing.

Another reason that scenario is unlikely to work for us is our closing schedule is pretty difficult. After a game in Shatla, Newmanistan is home to Cosumar, and then finishes qualifying in Eshan. If only this team did not have one more game played already then both Eshan and Lochario, then we could be excited about that last game on Eshan being a critical match. Regardless, our team has performed well, and deserved to have this discussed as a possibility, at least. After nine games, I don’t think anyone thought that discussion could still be possible.

The Home Stretch

by Fikret Balta

With the international bye over with, we can now assess the Red Wolves run in for the final 4 games on their schedule and take a close look at what their opponents have achieved so far and what we might expect from them. It's no secret that Bekir Altingunes said that they needed 15 of the 18 available points in the second half of qualifying to be certain in his mind of getting into the playoff spot. So far his team has delivered maximum points and have been rewarded with relevance in the battle of qualification (though only barely a victory from group favourites and heavyweights Valanora would put it beyond their reach). With the national team very much on the outside looking in, they will need to confront 4 very important matches with all of their talents firing on every cylinder.

MD 11: @ 95X
Last match: Kiryu-shi 2–3 95X
Form: WWWLD
Previous Meeting: L 2-3
The Red Wolves' first match of the home stretch will come against the team currently in the driver's seat for the playoff spot and Valanora's closest challenger in the table, a mere 2 points behind the leaders, although Valanora have a game in hand over them. They will rightly have ambitions beyond the playoffs given some of the vulnerabilities that have been exposed in the Vanorian team. This will be an incredibly difficult away match for the national team, having been beaten at home in a match that is commonly used as an example of this team's weakness in high pressure situations the national team will likely want to get some measure of revenge. At the beginning of qualification our editors marked this as a 4-0 defeat for the national team, with them over-performing they will likely get the result incorrect, but it's difficult to see a path to victory especially when the national team will be facing the group's strongest defence (despite having played one more match than several teams in the group they've still conceded the fewest goals) and an offence that is more than a match for the national team's weak defence (the national team have the second weakest defensive record and 95X have scored 21 goals). Defeat in this match will certainly end any slim hopes of automatic qualification and will make a playoff spot virtually unattainable.

MD 12: vs Balqia
Last match: Kavagrad 2-0 Balqia
Form: LDDDD
Previous Meeting: D 3-3
The Red Wolves will return to home territory to face a team that has been guilty of playing down to inferior opposition as well as capable of earning stunning results. It would be impossible to write about Balqia without noting their amazing 5-5 draw with group leaders Valanora, so far the only match they haven't earned maximum points from. That means this isn't a team to trifled with, they're more than capable of delivering a bloody nose to any team as the national team have found out in their thrilling, but somewhat bittersweet 3-3 draw when they traveled to Balqia and squandered a 3-0 lead going into halftime. One of many incidents that shone an uncomfortable light upon Bekir Altingunes' side and particularly the defence. So far they have been the group's draw specialists drawing five out of their nine matches so far. They also sport a decently potent attack, having scored 19 goals so far, though their defence is a weak point that the national could - and should - seek to exploit.

MD 13: @ Valanora
Last Match: Lavize 0–3 Valanora
Form: WDWWW
Previous Meeting: L 3-5
The group leaders and overwhelming favourites will likely already be assured of a place at the World Cup by the time the national team make the trip to Valanora. So far they have only dropped points to Balqia, who shocked them with a 5 goal performance. The national team will face an uphill battle in this match and it is widely considered a guaranteed defeat following the manner of the national team's defeat in their previous meeting. They have been good value for their dominant position in the group and will likely be featuring at the World Cup. They have by far the strongest offensive output of any team in the group with 28 goals, the national team incidentally are second with 23, the big difference is in the defences, the national team are the second worst, while the Vanorians are the second best. If the national team get any kind of result in this match it may be too late to provide any kind of boost to their prospects of making the playoffs, but it will go down as a sign that this is a team that belongs in matches with top tier teams.

MD 14: vs Lavize
Last Match: Lavize 0–3 Valanora
Form: LDLLL
Previous Meeting: W 4-3
The national team's final match will be at home, their fate may well be sealed when they welcome the team bringing up the rear in the group. Their position is unsurprising given that they have failed to win in their 9 matches so far, even providing Kiryu-shi with their only win of the qualifiers. They have only managed a meager 8 goals while conceding 19 and will likely provide little in the way of a challenge for the national team. If the national team still have a chance of making the playoffs or in a very unlikely scenario qualification they will likely be pleased that their competition will be a team that has so far struggled. Though naturally many will want them to be cautious, lest Lavize play spoiler to their chances of success if it still remains possible.

The State Of Play
Group G Round-Up
@ Zoloroni Sports City Stadium - Zoloroni, Mercedini

Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome back to Mercedini Sports Daily's coverage of qualification for the 83rd World Cup, hosted by Banija and the Equestrian States. Well.. we are knee deep into the qualification schedule currently, with only three matches left for Dini to play before they know whether they will be on the flight to the World Cup, or whether they will have to wait with baited breath for an initiation to the upcoming Cup of Harmony. It has been a three horse race throughout Group G with Mercedini, Krytenia and HUElavia all wrestling for the one and only automatic qualification spot in the group, with second place heading for a playoff spot and third place leaving with their tails between their legs, being eliminated from the World Cup for another edition. Points have been flying all around the group with the top three taking points off each other while the rest of the group are fighting for scraps, and are slowly edging closer to the precipice of elimination. We have already bid farewell to Aurevbush and to former World Champions Schottia, with Sinyal and the San Carlos Islands next to be eliminated, they are already out of contention for the auto-qual spot and risk elimination confirmation in the next match day.

And then there were three, with the Cyan brigade of Krytenia unexpectedly leading the pack with three games to go, having beaten the former leaders and top seed Mercedini by three goals to one at the Isserson Olympic Stadium to give their fans hope of a long-awaited return to the multiverse's premier sporting tournament. A clinical performance from the home side won them all the plaudits in what was a disasterous match for the Golden Eagles, with Garzallo earning the only positive of the match, with a headed goal at the beginning of the second half. It sees Krytenia go two point clear at the top and seven points clear of HUElavia in third, meaning a spot in the playoffs are all but confirmed for the men in cyan, Rami Niblick would be proud.

..Group G Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts H A
1 Krytenia 9 7 0 2 29 22 +7 21 2-0 1-3
2 Mercedini 9 6 1 2 22 15 +7 19
3 HUElavia 8 4 2 2 21 11 +10 14 2-4 2-1
4 Sinyal 9 2 4 3 14 15 −1 10 - 1-0
5 San Carlos Islands 8 1 4 3 14 21 −7 7 1-1 -
6 Schottia 8 1 3 4 10 13 −3 6 - 4-3
7 Aurevbush 9 1 2 6 8 21 −13 5 5-2 4-1

But what does that mean for Mercedini, they have been at the World Cup for the previous two editions and have been making steady progress ever since their first appearance at the World Cup finals where they won their debut match 3-1 against Flardania. Since then, two more appearances and their first WCC Title has graced them, leading to football becoming far and away the most popular sport in the nation. With an ever improving domestic league, Mercedini are climbing the charts as a nation to watch in the world of football, if that hasn't been established already. The Sports City Stadium hasn't been the fortress many fans had liked, although the beacon of sport that many in the nation had wanted it to be is quickly coming to fruition, hosting two international finals, the MFA Cup Final and hosting some of the best teams in the multiverse during tournament qualifiers and international friendlies. With this, fans are becoming expectant of progress in the future, which means every loss and dropped point piles on the pressure for the team and, crucially, the manager.

The big benefit of the remaining games is the fact that Krytenia and HUElavia will have to play each other, while Mercedini has a clear run against already eliminated teams, or teams close to the precipice. Schottia, Sinyal and the San Carlos Islands await for the Golden Eagles, with the former two being played in Zoloroni. Also, with HUElavia being five points behind with a game in hand on those above, they will still be two points behind Dini providing they win that game in hand. All of the top three will be looking on the rest of the group to take points of their rivals, meaning the group could go down to the final day with Mercedini looks of as the rest of the group continues without them.

It should be an interesting final few days for Mercedini and the rest of the teams in Group G, but that is all we've got time for in Zoloroni. Mercedini may have tasted defeat for the second time during this cycle, but they are not out of it just yet and sit comfortably in second place with three games to play. Interestingly enough, despite qualifying three times for previous World Cups, Dini have never won a qualifying group and have always qualified in second position, if that trend were to continue, then Mercedini will have to get through a playoff and there are plenty of scary teams in and around that second place spot in their respective groups. Top seeds are falling by the wayside in plenty of the 24 groups which are in action, Mercedini will have to be wary to avoid being another statistic. From Zoloroni, goodnight!

TAMGU 1 - 1 DEVONTA: CHANCE MISSED
Image

Scorers: A. Leima 82', L. S. Adams 90+2'(P)

The Tamguna national team is returning to training distraught after losing the opportunity to close the gap between them and Devonta. The penalty given away at the last minute was debated by sports commentators and some are convinced it is not a penalty. The decision of the referee was assisted by the ARS (Assistant Referee System) and after closely inspecting the position the match's referee, Yannik Galobbart (NPH), pointed to the spot. The penalty taker Adams was cold-blooded and sent the ball to the opposite side of the keeper.

CAN TAMGU STILL WIN?
Short answer: no, but yes.
Long answer: Tamgu are now unable to win Group T, however, If results go Tamgu's way, there is still a chance for them to join the playoff round.

Group T Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Starblaydia 9 7 1 1 29 15 +14 22
2 Devonta 8 3 3 2 15 11 +4 12
3 Saciu 9 3 3 3 17 19 −2 12
4 Axuva 9 3 1 5 13 18 −5 10
5 Ancherion 8 2 3 3 15 16 −1 9

6 Tamgu 9 2 3 4 12 17 −5 9
7 Abanhfleft 8 2 2 4 15 20 −5 8

Orange: Can't Win group, Dark orange: Can't win group but Tamgu

There are 3 more matches and 9 possible points Tamgu can get. In the case of Ancherion dropping points of at least 2 their last 4 matches, Devonta dropping 7 or more points, Saciu dropping points at least one and axuva dropping points at least once and Abanhfleft losing at least one game Tamgu can join the playoff round. (I might have miscalculated lol) The chances may be slim but it nowhere near impossible. The National Team will be working twice as hard to make up for their mistake.

Capital Stadium, Hapilopper City, Hapilopper
World Cup Qualifying Match 9: Hapilopper vs. Polkopia
There was a level of intensity in the locker room of the Hapilopper National Football Team just before the match that jumped off the page. The Haps had suffered through a run of bad luck that threatened to derail its World Cup qualifying hopes, and to say the least, they were sick and tired of it. They were sick and tired of hearing the questions from reporters. They were sick and tired of seeing the stories of how they were blowing this golden opportunity to make the World Cup, and they were most definitely sick and tired of not getting the results they felt they needed. If there was a time to make a statement, the time was now.

Thom Perkins was sick and tired of it, too. The manager of the national team, Perkins had seen the questions about his future with the team, even though his boss, Dom Probst, had made it crystal clear that Thom was the reason for the HNFT’s successes and to sack him would be utterly irresponsible for him to do. With that vote of confidence in hand, Thom addressed the team prior to the game. There wasn’t much to say, other than, please, turn this ship around.

“We don’t need more results like what we’ve been having,” Thom said. “I think all of you know this. We’re here to make the World Cup, dammit, and we just can’t let it slip away like this. You know what you need to do. TURN IT AROUND AND KICK SOME ASS!”

And kick some ass they did. The intensity could be felt all over the stadium as the players and the 66,000 plus on hand sang the Hapiloppian National Anthem, “The Sun Always Shines on Hapilopper” about as loudly and angrily as they could. There were no more mulligans. There was no more tolerance for error. Hapilopper was tied in the group, and a loss here would spell doom for their hopes of qualifying for the World Cup.

When the match started, the Haps appeared to play a little more physical than they had been used to, and perhaps they got away with a few things they probably shouldn’t have. Colin McLain and Nate Ellis laid down several contentious challenges on Polkopia’s Alexei Krepkov and Rafael Korošeć, getting lucky with the referees, until the 36th minute, when Nate received a yellow card for tripping Krepkov in the penalty zone, undoubtedly making the Hapiloppians a little nervous.

Fortunately for them, however, Cooter Harris stopped a penalty kick from Krepkov. Cooter appeared to shout a few things towards Krepkov, and to the rest of the opponents. Later, it was revealed that it was nothing more than a little friendly trash-talk: “NOT ON THIS DAY! NOT ON THIS DAY, NO SIR! THIS IS OUR HOUSE!!!”

Seemingly encouraged by the save, once the ball arrived in the midfield, Steve Erickson raced around Polkopian defenders, even doing a strange spin move or two to shimmy and sashay his way around the defenders. He fired the ball to Ernie Stevenson, and on the 39th minute, Ernie hit paydirt, sending the ball into the back of the net and past goalkeeper Danko Vilar. Ernie ran over to his left and saw the crowd of thousands in a frenzy. While they couldn’t hear him, he reportedly shouted something to his adoring supporters, something along the lines of “THIS IS OUR MOMENT! WE’RE GONNA WIN THIS FUCKING MATCH!”

In the 43rd minute, Ernie got another one, this time with help from Beautiful Bobby East. Firing it into the back of the net, Ernie had given Hapilopper a 2-0 lead, and you damn bet he was jawing at the fans, who were giving it right back to him. Polkopia could try all they wanted, but Hapilopper would not be denied.

The match ended with a 2-0 Hapilopper victory, in spite of the valiant effort from the Polkopians. Cooter Harris wound up with 15 saves on the night, and was probably just as much the man of the match as Ernie was. The Haps scored three incredibly crucial points on the night. At least for one evening, Hapilopper’s run of bad luck had come to an end, and it had ended with them still leading the group. They now had a one-point lead over the rest of the group, with three matches still to play.

As the team stormed off the field after the victory, Ernie Stevenson was stopped by Venerable Television’s Robert Skippers, who asked the striker for a comment on live TV, for millions of people watching across Hapilopper. The interview was being piped into the speakers in Capital Stadium, so for the fans in the stadium and watching on television, what he said next became legend.

“We’re not dead yet, bitches!” Ernie shouted. “Three more matches, we can still do this!”

The first of those matches would pit Hapilopper against Lepolanatnessffiria, who, once again, we’ll refer to as “Hapilopper’s next opponents” as, well, that’s a pretty complicated name to spell. After that, the Haps would play host to Brenecia, to see if lightning could strike twice and the Haps could pull off one more magnificent upset, before a bye and then the final match of the qualifiers, against Damukuni.

When Thom Perkins met with the media after the match, he stated that qualifying for the World Cup was still a possibility, but boy, would the Haps have to work their asses off to make it so.

“Well, we can’t look past Lepola,” Thom said. “They could still pull off a result against us.”

At this point, Hapilopper’s next opponents had a lock on last place in Group N, and were eliminated from qualifying for the World Cup proper in any form. With one tie and seven losses, Hapilopper’s next opponents were in last place, with one point.

When training got underway the next morning, the team prepared themselves to face their next opponents, but knew full well their biggest challenges were up ahead of them. They had felt what it was like to lose, and they didn’t like it. They had felt the possibility of failure, and they weren’t too thrilled about it. They had no choice, but to take on the challenges head-on.

THE WITCH EMELIE, XI
Previous: I, II. III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X

Ineke watched the train depart the station until its last car had disappeared beyond her line of sight. She let out a long breath and swept her hair back. "We almost had them," she said. "We almost fuggin' had them." She thought for a moment, then asked, "Where is that train going?"

Leender replied, "Targul Frumos."

"Let's go," she said.

He raised an eyebrow, "We're going to Targul Frumos? You think the company will be cool with that?"

She rolled her eyes and started making her way back to their vehicle. He followed her closely. "No," she explained, on the way, "I'm going to let headquarters know where Janis and Dario are headed. They'll have local agents intercept. In the meanwhile, we can continue our work here. There's something about what Emelie Reverie said the other day that just doesn't sit well with me. I want to talk to the boss man, Donal Jerispo."

"I'll let them know we're coming," said Leender.

"No don't." Ineke set the AI override again. She liked to drive fast when she was frustrated.

"Uh, uh, gimme a second," shouted Donal through the thick wooden door between the inside of his office and the outside hallway. Ineke and Leender were waiting outside. She was mercilessly pounding on his door. "Just a second, just a second, you've caught me...um, off-guard." There was a tinge of nervousness in his voice.

"I just have some questions," said the detective, her voice calm. Leender stood behind her smirking. "Find this amusing?" she asked him.

"A little," he replied. "How's he gonna help us anyway?"

The door opened then. To both of their surprise, it was Emelie Reverie who opened it. Her shirt was wrinkled and her hair looked a mess, as if it had been tossed or pulled. Strange, thought Ineke. Then her eyes widened for a split moment as she realized what was going on and, finally, she rested her hands on her hips and arched an eyebrow. "Good afternoon, Emelie," she said.

"Hi, detective," responded the doctor, who was looking down toward the floor, her cheeks flushed red with embarrassment. Emelie scurried around them in the tight hallway, pressing herself against the wall as if the two security officers had the plague. "I have to get back to work."

"I'm sure the boss wouldn't mind giving you a few minutes for some...extracurricular activities," quipped Leender, which Emelie blush even more.

Ineke smiled. "No, no," she said, "you get back to work, Emelie. We'll talk to you later."

The doctor took the opportunity to hurridly scurry off and disappear. The two officers walked into Donal's office. "Mr. Jerispo," greeted Ineke, "I have bad news. Your former employees, Janis Mariko and Dario Gertona are on the run. We attempted to intercept and arrest them this morning but our efforts were unsuccessful, as I'm sure you can guess."

"Oh no," he responded. "Do you know where they're going?"

"We have ideas," is all Leender said to that.

Ineke stepped forward. "We have some questions for you related to the case. Now, admittedly, more than we had before." She looked back toward the hallway through which Emelie had left. "First, how long has that been going on? You've got yourself a nice little set up here, it seems."

The director coughed. "I don't know what you're talking about."

Leender laughed. "C'mon man, we're not idiots."

"Aren't you married, Mr. Jerispo?" asked Ineke, who had painted her face with deadly seriousness.

"Y-y-yes," he answered, voice cracking. Donal cleared his throat and continued, "Yes, yes, I am. I've been happily married for over twenty years." He flashed his ring finger, looked at it, and realized there was no ring on it. Scrambling, he opened one of the drawers, pulled out a gold ring and hastily put it back on his finger.

"Happily," repeated Leender. "Well, at least one of you is happy."

Ineke looked at her partner. "Now, now, Leender, don't tease the man."

Perturbed, the director asked, "What questions do you have for me?"

"Is that allowed?" asked Ineke. "Can you screw the doctor under your employ? Just a question."

He returned a flat stare and didn't say anything. She pressed on the wound just a little bit harder, smiling all the while. "How would your wife react if she were to find out about this extramarital fling? I'm sure she wouldn't be too happy. And knowing that there's security testimonial to back up her claims of infidelity, I'm sure a divorce would sound like quite the attractive prospect. How much are you worth, anyway?"

Donal didn't answer that question either. After some silence, he asked again, "What questions do you have for me?"

"The doctor told us that she's been working on new chemical compounds that deal with pain relief and performance," said the detective. "How much do you know about this?"

"I'm aware," replied the director. "With regards to performance, that's true to an extent and in ways, but we don't believe in performance enhancement. That would be frowned upon by the international community and the Imperial Football Team Association is in good standing, and plans to remain that way."

"Of course," she said, hoping that her skepticism was obvious. "What's your role with regards to that project?"

He stood and walked over to a silver cart on the other side of the room. "Would you like some coffee?" he asked.

Leender said, "Yes." Ineke said, "No."

With a small spoon, the director poured some ground beans into the coffee maker. Then, he took a pitcher of water and poured some of that in, as well. The chrome maker gurgled as it brewed. With his back to them, the director answered her question. "I indirectly oversee it, just like I indirectly see everything that happens here. Otherwise, I have very little involvement."

"How much does Emelie talk to you about it?" asked Ineke.

He paused for a moment, then, "Very little. Contrary to what you two believe, I have almost no relationship with her other than that between director of the association and one of the star members of our medical team."

"Right," said Ineke. "Strictly professional."

Donal sighed. "What else?"

"Did any players ever complain about the side effects of the experimental drugs you were having them take?" she asked.

Again, a pause. "No," he answered.

She asked, "Are you sure?"

"Yes." He poured two cups of coffee and handed one to Leender. Steam rose from the top.

Ineke looked at him in the eyes when he turned toward her again. "Do you know how Frapto and Klasos died?"

He returned her gaze. "Yes," he said, "suicide. That's what I've been told."

"Right." She looked at Leender, who took a sip from his mug.

"This is some good shit," the investigator said. "What type of bean?"

"Mokan," replied the director. "I only drink the best." To her, "Anything else?"

"Not at the moment," she said back to him.

He nodded and said nothing for a minute but, before the two officers turned to leave, he asked, "I trust that what you saw today will stay between you, your partner, and myself. At the very least, I trust that it will stay out of the ears of my wife. It would be very bad for me if she were to hear false rumors about my so-called extra-marital affairs."

"We'll see," replied Ineke.

Outside, in the hallway, Leender asked, "Where to next?"

"Let's go talk to Emelie," she answered.

Freud for a day

Postby Balqia » Thu Aug 15, 2019 8:44 am

Liene was there, sitting in the couch while the coach Laqlo E. Mus sipped a bit of tea, her formal clothes were a bit tight, but at least she managed to pretend to be calm. He sat in the sofa, his eyes down in the empty cup.
-So, you are the new psychologist?
Ok, that must sound strange, let me explain. Liene have a friend who happens to work as a psychologist, she went there to visit her and take a walk. However, after arriving there her friend received an urgent call, apparently on of the woman’s sons broke a leg and went to the hospital. Liene agreed to wait her there. In this meantime Mr Mus arrived, both of them chat a bit and Liene convinced him that she was an intern.
-Yes, I am still in college but I promise I will do my best.
-Thanks… Eliesa..?
-Elisa.
-Elisa, right. So, did you read my informations?
-Only a bit, this… er… talk, should be made by Maria, but she got an urgent call.
-Oh, ok…
-So, let’s talk about something recent Mr Mus… yesterday’s match, is that okay to you?
-You can call me Laqlo, and yes, that’s okay… so, we expected a victory, we tied against Kavagrad last time, so I thought this match would be easy because of the improvements done. We got so confident with Valanora…
-It’s okay, but try to focus in yourself, not in the “we”.
Liene read that in a magazine, when you talk to someone and want their confidence you must acert your interest in the person, not in the group.
-Right. So we… I thought that it would be a victory. The players training routine was flexibilized and focused on resting, they put so many effort in Valanora… it was just natural to take it easy with weaker teams…
-Don’t worry, heavier training isn’t a magical formula to win every match.
-Yes, but now everyone is blaming me, even the players complaint about my training, Smiq is so angry.
-You shouldn’t blame yourself, everyone have a bit of fault.
-It’s just that… well…
-Yes?
-It was always like this, from kindergarten until today. Everyone counted on me and I went there and ruined it… when I was in middle school we played a lot of football too, and one day I got the ball, the goal was right ahead, I just needed to kick it… but I managed to miss, everyone got angry, “it was easy, you moron”, they told me…
If it was supposed to be some sad history, Liene didn’t understood, it was just some stupid story, thing like those happen to everyone, but that guy was complaining about a stupid game in middle school. Before Liene speak Laqlo continued.
-In graduation it was the same, even today I disappoint everyone, in the Cup of Harmony it was the same, they chose me, so there it was, the little guy that no one liked, giving orders and planing games. Everyone got disappointed, as always, I fail in everything…
She was starting to feel sadness there, he was about to cry, just talking about some games of football.
-How was your relationship with your parents?
She changed subjects before the talk became too serious, it would be horrible to hear other people’s problems because he thought you were a psychologist who was trying to help.
-W-what?... It was pretty good in fact. My father was from the army, he always tried to protect me, he told me about how harsh thing are in the real world. My mother loved me very much, I visit her sometimes, she always talk about how proud she is of me.
-And your relationship to your profession?
-It’s… hard. I like the job, but no one likes me doing it. I tried my best to make the guys better, but they hate me. My training methods are too harsh, I always hear that, but they work. Be more kind, they tell me this every time, but if I do people just laugh at me, I don’t know what people find so fun about others height, I am not a bad person, I respect everyone, but people just laugh at me because of my height. I didn’t choose to born like this…
He surely was used to talk about this, Liene didn’t understood how he could deposit so many confidence in someone he barely knew, but he did.
-I thought everything was fine, that we were starting to get along, but then we lost. If Faj advanced like I told him to do we would’ve won. But he insisted in doing it “his way”. If Adrianoviq was in the place I told him to stay the first goal wouldn’t happen, but he insisted in advancing. I just don’t know why people don’t do what I told them to do. It’s like they don’t trust me…
-Maybe you should try to impose yourself?
-I do that!- he almost jumped from the sofa, he almost yelled this phrase. -I impose myself everytime. My dad taught me to do this in High School, people made fun of me in school, so he told me to act as rude as I could… and it worked, people stopped that, no one made fun of me again. He was right, we must first be respected, so then people will start to like you. However I don’t know why people didn’t started to respect me yet.
That explained many things, the barmen was telling the truth after all. Laqlo was very sensitive about jokes indeed, but someone had to told him that this wouldn’t work in the real world. Unfortunately the clock used to mark the session’s timing started to make noise. Before she could say anything he said goodbye and went away.
After her friend arrived both of them went shopping. She explained what happened, after being scolded and receiving a lecture about ethics and how to behave she managed to make her friend promise to don’t talk to anyone about that. Good for her, at least she got some materials about the match, naturally, Liene don’t wrote about Laqlo’s personal life. Something was off about the guy’s life, normally no one take jokes so seriously, he must’ve suffered a lot of bullying to develop a complex about that. Well, “that is a psychologists job to resolve, not mine”, as she wrote in her diary.

First In, For Once
Qualification can be sealed with win over Fleftics

For the first time in at least a century, and if indeed not in the entirety of their history, Starblaydia find themselves the first nation in the World Cup 83 Qualifiers to book themselves a guaranteed route through to the World Cup Finals, this time in Equestria and Banija. Thanks to a tight group - tight, at least, between spots two through seven, oddly enough a solid enough group to call them the 'bottom six' - where no other team seems to want to win more than fifty percent of their games, Starblaydia find themselves ten points clear atop Group T and guaranteed of at least a place in the Qualification Play-Offs.

Starblaydia had let their undefeated streak slip on an away trip to Tamgu, where the home side were still reeling from the sudden and violent death of their defender, Han Tekran and came together in a show of unity and determination to beat the five-time winners 1-0 and inflict their 150th loss World Cup Qualifying, from 922 matches so far. The team in white and purple got back on track, however, by putting another three goals past Axuva, although their leaky defensive efforts continued for the sixth straight game without a clean sheet. This victory gave them the current ten-point cushion over Devonta, although the chasing side have a game in hand and Starblaydia have just nine points available to win compared to Devonta's twelve. Still, equaling or bettering the result of Devonta hosting Axuva on the next Matchday will mean that gap becomes insurmountable, making 11th-ranked Starblaydia first in the queue for the plane to World Cup 83.

The match which could seal qualification - something Starblaydia can do even with a draw or defeat, depending on the result of the Devonta-Axuva match - will be at the Stadii Di Bradini against familiar foes Abanhfleft. The Fleftic side uncharacteristically find themselves rock bottom of Group T, but thanks to the chaotic nature of the results so far, they stand just four points away from second place, with a game in hand over everyone but Devonta and Ancherion. It's one of Starblaydia's toughest matches, on paper, in this group, but last time a McCloud hat-trick, two from Cole and one each from Saraviva and the captain Capodanno saw Starblaydia run out 7-4 winners in one of the highest scoring matches in all of Qualifying so far. Automatic qualification is a dream beyond anyone but Starblaydia and Devonta at this point, and even for Devonta that particular mountain looks to be insurmountable. Ázëwyn Fëanáro's side will be sure to cruise through the remainder of these group fixtures, enjoying their final Matchday bye and the rest and relaxation that will come with knowing that it's only a matter of time before they book their spots in the last thirty-two and picking out hotels across one part of Atlantian Oceania or the other.

At an individual level, Aaron Cole finds himself just one goal short of joining the all-time Top Ten for his country, while captain Viola Capodanno herself is just one strike away from entering the exclusive Rapaii 15 club. Alan Eccleston has managed to double his tally for his country with his three goals in four appearances so far, while the young sensation Sutter McCloud still leads the Starblaydi charts for this tournament with six goals in eight games to date.
