Strong rhetoric on the Mareibatian crisis by Sindelar in Government House today

by Castor Archeron | 18th June 605

Image
Matthias Sindelar talking to press shortly after making his statement in Government House

Today Matthias Sindelar announced to a packed Government House the strongest reaction to the Mareibatian crisis yet by a member of the government. In a fifteen minute speech he launched into a scathing description of the actions of the Mareibat Freedom Militia and the Bellight People's Army, both of whom have claimed some responsibility for the attack last year on Government House itself and the recent attack on the wind farm in the Castle region of Apox. He had similarly disparaging comments to make with regards to the administration overseen by Imperator Jhon Cossack in Halholzer, saying his "cowardice" and "inaction" had led to the situation as it currently stood.

He praised the Mareibat Democratic Party [MDP], particularly it's leader Colwinna Kelly, the former chief operator at Teol Power Plant, the destruction of which was the most recent in a long line of terrorism carried out by the Mareibat Freedom Militia and was the final straw which saw Teol left completely outside the federation of Mareibat and at the mercy of the Freedom Militia. Colwinna Kelly has led a number of peaceful rallies in the capital Halholzer and on the nearby small island, in the town of Harmonica, calling for Jhon Cossack to emerge from hiding in the Imperial Palace and hand power over to the people. Mercifully though, the violence and destruction seen in Bellight and Teol doesn't seem to have spread to the capital yet to the same extent, with the harbour masters managing to maintain some level of control. However, there is definitely confusion over who they answer to at the moment, with many having defected to run under the leadership of Kelly and the MDP, while most of the loyalists have gone to ground with Cossack. There are fears that other could become effectively armed and dangerous rogue operatives, applying justice outside the law.

Matthias Sindelar also took aim at Clarisse Ward, the firebrand Prime Minister of Brenecia, saying that her comments regarding Mareibat were "unneccessary" and "risked spiralling the situation further out of control". While he stressed that this was not yet a formal declaration of war against various fractured groups within Mareibat, he stated that the people of Apox would not be cowed by the terrorism and xenophobia spreading from the region, and that if the situation could not be defused with calmness and rational decision making, then he was not afraid to show that Apoxians were not all talk. The destroyer, A.T Puniface which was performing routine patrols in the waters between Rushmore and Esportiva, was not being re-routed to the Mareibat straits in an effort to help Euran forces in ensuring that the instability in the region did not affect these important shipping routes.

In his response to this statement, Artur Winklebottom was less than impressed with the already fairly unprecedented Apoxian action, stating that "we are led, frankly by a hypocrit. To dismiss the leader of another nation as a coward for standing by, then proceeding to do the same, clearly paints the picture that we too are led by someone undeserving of the role of Leader. Unless Matthias Sindelar changes the tune and guarantees Apoxian safety by sanctioning direct action against these rebel groups, then I will seek to raise a vote of no-confidence in the Green Party and it's current leadership."

Coalition partners, the Apox National Party, have always stood on an anti-war sentiment, and while it is suspected that Daramie Jenkins is keeping his reservations to himself, other members of the ANP who aren't in the cabinet freely expressed their concerns by the increasing tensions. Government Worker for the Thrumbar region, Alastair Gooderich said in response to the Leader's statement that "the Green Party and indeed my own party are succumbing to the pressure exerted on them by the Free Party in a move to shore up the more moderate voter bases. This is incredibly dangerous and directly risks the lives and freedoms of many of our armed forces personnel." The Secretary of Transport, ANP Government Worker for the Wofford region Bonquesha Tilbroke resigned following the statement by Sindelar saying, "if I am to remain in my current position, I am condoning this action and this escalation of instability. I cannot remain true to myself in doing so and therefore I must resign."

The Mareibatian crisis seems to show no sign of abating and it continues to cause a great deal of restlessness in Apox itself, with much of the country divided on the issues, although increasing amounts favour some form of direct action. In a poll of the readership of the International Post, 68% responded that Apox needed to intervene, with 27% saying Apox should keep well out of other country's business. The remaining 5% refused to commit to a plan of action. The political fallout of this will likely become most clear in the upcoming local elections, with many cities across Apox, including the capital Dwile, going to the polls to elect new (and in some cases the first) city governments.

In the interim, Apox are now advocating for the establishment of democracy in Mareibat and are willing to help organise and oversee the first elections in the country. This will require considerable reconciliation with groups on the outlying islands, who so far have warned Apox off interfering, threatening further attacks on the Apoxian population and sympathetic locals. There is understood to be almost a complete breakdown in communications between the Apoxian government and sources linked to Jhon Cossack, so for the moment the Mareibat Democratic Party are being regarded as the temporary government within Mareibat until elections can be held.

Apox 1-1 Paratan Unknown 7', Bridges 66'
APX: Rasmussen -- Fox, Wallis-Iqbal, Jekyll (c), du Plessis -- Menheniot (Mormentor 58'), Townsend (Blinkman 83'), Bridges -- Arrowsmith, Oakstone-Sandoval, Ephraim-Garza (Hannibal 74')
PAR: Not supplied

Apox had their first and hopefully slip up in qualifying in the last match, somehow contriving to draw to 321st ranked Paratan at home, after a wonder goal in the seventh minute handed the visitors a slim lead which took until the sixty-sixth minute and a good Aspen Bridges' header to cancel out. A relatively strong along rotated side lined up to play the match, with Tregatta Spitfire still out after her concussion in the Xanneria match and Osmosis Gandhi suspended. However there was good news in experienced defender and squad vice-captain Imhotep Jekyll returning for this match. Despite a number of good attempts on goal by the experienced Winston Arrowsmith and Miriam Oakstone-Sandoval in the latter stages of the match, Paratan and mainly their goal keeper held firm. Acronius now sit atop the group by two points, admittedly having played an extra game, lending extra importance to their match-up with Apox on Matchday 7.

Ministry of Sport Headquarters, Petrovijanka

It was early on a Monday morning in the Department of Football and the first damage limitation meeting of the week had already been called. Happily, this meeting was not in fact what the department was going to do about another dismal showing on the pitch as Mattijana had somehow beaten world champions Vilita 1-2 at the Tivoli-Ring in Alikki-Corra.

Instead, rumour had got out that the Department was planning on sacking head coach Dusan Vukoja and immediately replacing him with an unknown foreign manager. This would have been sub-optimal even had Mattijana carried on losing, but now Vukoja had got a response from his team and shown himself to be a reasonably competent coach, it was even more embarrassing.

"Do we actually know where this came from?" asked minister for sport Julian Petrov to get things kicked off.

The various officials around the boardroom table shook their heads in awkward silence.

"Not a clue", replied head of Football Polona Struna eventually. "We're not even planning to sack him, even if we were, we couldn't anymore. Besides, everyone here knows that I want Zala Stefanidi instead..."

Struna had made no secret of who she was tipping for the Mattijanan job once Vukoja's valiant attempt at sealing Mattijana's first World Cup Finals place inevitably failed. Given the current goings-on around the department of Football, this terrified a lot of people. Mattijana's media outlets would combust with excitement if word of that move got out.

"Well indeed..." Petrov sounded more than a little grumpy. "I can only imagine the response to this from the general public hasn't been great..."

PR manager Dominik Mirje was next to speak.

"We've taken a fair amount of flak online from this since it got released yesterday morning. I'll read you one of the comments under the article in the NasinalniPost."

"I'd rather you didn't", interrupted Struna under her breath.

"What a ridiculous decision from @MattijanaFussBand. Replacing an established manager who's just pulled off Mattijana's greatest WCQ win with some nobody from abroad who we don't even know the identity of yet? More proof the people @MattijanaFussBand have borscht for brains."

"Well we can't really argue with that..." mused Petrov.

"What a panic move from @MattijanaFussBand. At this stage in the cycle, we'd just get some has-been from the middle of nowhere who couldn't get a job anywhere else. Absolute bunch of muppets."

"Yes thank you Dominik..."

Polona Struna looked highly flammable.

"We've still got to work out what to actually do about all of this haven't we?"

"Well look, I think even though this is a completely different problem to any of the ones we've faced before, I think we can handle it in exactly the same way we normally do. Get someone to write out a statement saying it's all bollocks and that we're fully behind Dusan… or some other clichéd rubbish like that. It's probably a good idea to congratulate the team on the win as well. I'm not sure anything like that will come around again for a little while."

There was another silence. A few nods broke out from around the uncomfortably cosy room.

"Good."

MattijanaFussBand Statement Regarding the Future of Dusan Vukoja

It has come to the attention of the MattijanaFussBand board that there have been allegations of the impending dismissal and replacement of head coach Dusan Vukoja.

The board completely refutes these allegations and are sure that Mr Vukoja is the best man to be Mattijanan head coach at this time. We would also like to offer our congratulations to Dusan and the squad for their recent World Cup Qualifying victory against Vilita.

We recognise that being a football manager is a job that always carries scrutiny and would like to reassure Dusan and the general public that this speculation is completely false and unfounded. We would like to advise the public that decisions about the national team are highly confidential and will not be made public except for in official announcements and statements. We also thank you for your continued support of the national side.

Lead Squandered as Controversy Stalks the Team

by Tufan Nursultan

Balqia 3–3 Timuria
Kaesar Putiniq (71, 82, 89);Vatan Ercetin (36), Tayyar Ozel (43), Osman Hasanoglu (59)

The national team squandered a 3-0 lead against Balqia as the team operates under the cloud of several social media related controversies as the team has instituted a new binding conduct guideline for the players in the national team squad. The draw leaves both teams in third and fourth respectively with neither gaining notable ground in the race for qualification.

Both teams showed positivity in the opening exchanges, with both teams favouring attacking football. Saban Inekci was busy early, making a smart save from a freekick and needing to bail out his defence after a miscommunication left Karl Adrianoviq in space, forcing another save from Saban who barely got his fingertips to the shot. Caner Turan forced the opposition defence to be very mindful of his presence with several positive runs early on, this left other players in space and led to an Ertan Renda shot stinging the palms of Stefano Kalniq and a haphazard clearance from the ensuing corner.

The deadlock was broken however, by Vatan Ercetin who scored from a diving header from a Tayyar Ozel cross, as he split the central defenders marking in two. This began a period of strong play from the national team with Ertan Renda again forcing a save from Kalniq via a free kick of his own. Tayyar Ozel then doubled the national team's lead with a long range effort from 30 yards, that appeared speculative at best, but wriggled its way past the goalkeeper who got a hand to the shot but was unable to prevent it hitting the back of the net. Half time arrive and spared the hosts from the siege that was developing around their goal.

Things seemed to stabilise for both teams defensively in the first 10 minutes of the second half. With an uncharacteristic lack of attacking impetus from both sides. Of course with 2 such offensively minded teams this wasn't meant to last. Osman Hasanoglu scored a rare goal with a towering header from an Ertan Renda free-kick. Many though this would be enough to seal the three points, but Balqia had other plans. Not wanting to be outshone or upset by newcomers suddenly the hosts showed their steel and Kaesar Putiniq grabbed an impressive hat-trick from 3 superb individual efforts making both centre-backs look pedestrian in comparison with him. Yet again the defence has been the source of an ultimately disappointing result.

The result didn't assist either of the teams, as Valanora continued their perfect record with an impressive 3-0 win over Kiryu-shi. Meanwhile Kavagrad took all the points with a 3-1 victory away to Lavize.

What they said after the game:

Bekir Altingunes: "Look am I happy to come here and get the point, yes. Am I upset that there seems to be systematic problem that we can't get a grip of, also yes. As always we'll assess and reflect and get ready for the big match against Valanora."

Player Ratings:

Saban Inekci 6/10 - He couldn't have done much more to prevent the goals that he conceded. But there are now rumblings that perhaps he isn't gelling with the defence.

Ozbek Sarikaya 6/10 - A dull day when the defence collapsed awfully. Probably a good thing we're not noticing him as a defender.

Eyup Mustafa 5/10 - He had a tough day, but it wasn't entirely his own fault. That doesn't mean he didn't play poorly.

Osman Hasanoglu 7/10 - He was solid defensively, though he has his share of the blame. He got a good goal.

Gokdeniz Dag 5/10 - Was substituted after being uncharacteristically poor.

Atilla Acar 6/10 - Energetic as always, but he didn't really break the game open in any way.

Yusuf Ihsanoglu 6/10 - Struggled defensively, but was very helpful with many positive passes.

Caner Turan 8/10 - An excellent day, that was made incomplete only by his lack of goals. Has justified the management's faith in him.

Ertan Renda 7/10 - Another quietly good day for the diminutive midfielder. Very much showing he has an "it" factor.

Tayyar Ozel 8/10 - Scored an amazing goal and was instrumental in all of the strong offence we saw during the match.

Vatan Ercetin 7/10 - It feels routine, but it shouldn't to say that he got an important goal. He was rather quiet outside of that however.

Substitutes:

Beyhan Enver 6/10 - Came on for Gokdeniz and while he didn't change the result, he showed he was adequate cover.

Metin Aytacoglu 6/10 - Replaced Ertan when he was clearly exhausted. Didn't provide a spark.

Hakan Diren 6/10 - Showed calmness and poise, but ultimately couldn't prevent an awful defensive collapse.

Man of the Match: Kaesar Putiniq - The man put his team on his back and clawed back the point for them, hopefully he gets recognition in his home country for such an excellent performance.

Player of the Game for Timuria: Tayyar Ozel - The winger has been quietly contributing over the past few games, but there was nothing quiet about his performance today. Were it not for Putiniq's performance he might have got man of the match honours.

For our promotion our editors were oh so close to getting the result right, but as it stands they have 6 points (one more than the national team currently)

Schedule and editor's predictions with the results so far:
MD1: vs Kavagrad, Manat School Sports Centre, L 0-2, Result: D 1-1
MD2: @ Kiryu-shi, W 1-0, Result: W 4-3
MD3: Bye
MD4: vs 95X, Tim-Enerji Park, L 0-3, Result: L 2-3
MD5: @ Balqia D 2-2, Result: D 3-3
MD6: vs Valanora, Hisar School Field of Excellence, L 1-4
MD7: @ Lavize D 1-1
MD8: @ Kavagrad L 1-3
MD9: vs Kiryu-shi, Maden-Is Stadium W 2-0
MD10: Bye
MD11: @ 95X L 0-4
MD12: vs Balqia, Manat School Sports Centre D 1-1
MD13: @ Valanora L 0-4
MD14: vs Lavize, Belediye Park W 1-0

Total points won: 6

The next match: The national team will need to assess quickly and try to address its defensive woes as it comes up against the unbeaten group favourites Valanora. No one is expecting the national team to shock their much stronger opponents, but hopefully the team wont be embarrassed.

-Oh man, I don’t believe these guys didn’t lost.- Someone was talking in the other side of the wall.-I thought it would be a piece of cake. Now we must win against 95X, we are screwed.
-Don’t be so pessimistic, the Timurians deserve all our praise for their excellent job.- The other voice was louder, maybe he was closer to the door.
-Yeah, but they are freaking newbies…
-LIke we were last Cup, being a “newbie” means nothing but that you started to compete in this Cup. If you think technically, we are neubies too, as such we only…
-For Gods sake, shut up.- a sound that Liene interpreted as a punch was heard - by the way, that first half was harsh, if Kalniq wasn’t quick enough in this match we could’ve lost.
-I think that Kalniq must be quick in every match, I mean, his abilities are put to proof in every match.
-Are you retarded? I am trying to initiate a conversation here. Well… at least we got a draw, I must admit it was hard but we did it!
-Not thanks to you.
-Nor you, the big guy certainly is giving his best, I wonder why he is in the bench.
-Because he is more fitted for boxing than for football, I mean, his nickname “the bull” is very suggestive.
-Oh come on, he isn’t that big. He just likes gyms.
-What? Didn’t you know?
-Know what?
-His nickname isn’t only due to his big muscles, some years ago he almost killed a player during a match, he tripped and his head went right in the guys stomach, almost killing him.
-That isn’t true. And it don’t even mean anything, the guy did a great job and should be praised for such.
-I couldn’t agree more. But don’t let Laqlo hear this, if he thinks we are praising Putiniq too much he will put him in every game from now on.
-The dwarf isn’t this bad.
-He makes Stravo clear the bathroom everyday for that punch, and since we won some matches he is almost killing Faj, Qalti and Matiq with training to “ensure the excellent performance”.
-I can’t disagree, but he isn’t that kind of person.
-Only God knows what happens in that tiny head.
A minute of silence, the only sound that could be heard was some clothes being changed.
-Do you think we are doing a bad job?
-What do you mean?
-I mean what I said. Look at today’s match, we almost lost to these neubi… I mean, newcomers. We are the back guys, we should be better than this, they passed right through our defenses, without a single difficulty, we should halt them, but in reality we could’ve been substituted by potatoes and the result would’ve been the same.
-Hey, don’t get so harsh with yourself, we did our best there, a potato wouldn’t do nothing, you in the other hand did your best and avoided a defeat.
-Yeah man, but our next match is against 95X, these guys are freaking awesome. We have no chance at all.
-Shut up, we have more chances than you imagine, and even if we lose we will do the same as in the other Cup and rise from the bottom. We are better than before, and we will be better tomorrow, this is for what we fight in the field.
-Wow man, you got super cheesy, what’s wrong wit you?
-Wh-what?... I tried motivate you.
-You know what would motivate me? Stuffed potatoes.
-You pay this time.
And so the voices faded. Liene finally could get out from the tiny room besides the locker room. She got there too late so she didn’t got the meeting after the match, but at least she got that conversation.
That speech really motivated me, hope it works with the readers”.

HUElavia started their Qualifiers for WC83 in a historical fashion. For Matchday 1, HUElavia started their campaign visiting Mercedini at the Zoloroni Sports City Stadium in Zoloroni City. Many HUElavians did not have much high hope for the match, but millions upon millions of HUElavians were proven wrong.

The game started out with Dostalok scoring at the 10th minute, which was held on until a foul committed on Gallego in the 38th minute. One minute later, Cristiano scored the tying penalty. Just before half-time, Chillotov scored at the 43rd minute, making the Top Seed go into the break 2-1. After head coach Jose Antonio Barajas had a very strong talk at half-time, it inspired Los Amarillos to take charge and stun the stadium. Constant attacks towards the defense and goalkeeper caused the Mercedinian defense to collapse in a span of 5 minutes. A corner kick in the 81st minute allowed a deep cross by substitute Prso meet the head of the captain Mendieta and made it 2-2. At the 83rd minute, a solo goal was scored by youngster Rossi, who ran from across the field to silence the crowd as he made it 2-3. Finally, substitute youngster Nakata made it 2-4 with a shot from 20 yards out to make it 2-4, and the match with that score. For the 2nd straight WC Qualifier, HUElavia upsetted the #1 seed of the group, and they head back to Natel for Matchday 2 against Aurevbush.

After a break in the 2nd Matchday for HUElavia, the 2nd match involved the HUElavians opening up their Home Match against Aurevbush in the newly renovated Estadio Thomas Rodriguez. The match kicked off to a sold-out crowd, and within 20 seconds, Los Amarillos were up 1-0. A quick loss of possession by Aurevbush allowed for Petit to have the ball at his feet and slotted it past the goalkeeper, with the whole stadium roaring and jumping up to celebrate the goal. There were plenty of chances to increase the scoreline, but close misses and saves kept the match at 1-0 at half-time. Once the 2nd Half started, it took 30 seconds for the scoreline to go up as substitute Suzuki threaded through the defense, before assisting a tap-in goal be Gonzalez, making it 2-0. Half an hour later, in the 76th minute, Cristiano scored a spectacular Free-Kick that made it 3-0, and HUElavia held out to keep the clean-sheet and keep 1st Place to themselves.

Matchday 4 saw HUElavia go up against Krytenia, the #2 seed of the group, the authentic rival for HUElavia to aspire for a playoff spot in the World Cup. They traveled to Krytenia and had the home team on the ropes. A free-kick scored by Rossi in the 8th minute and a curving goal by Gallego in the 41st minute had Los Amarillos up 2-0 by half-time. All seemed as HUElavia was going to be running away with the direct qualification, but Krytenia had woken up and had came back from behind to score 3 unanswered goals in 32 minutes. Two from Naismith and one from Mariner caused HUElavia to give up 1st place to Mercedini, while the HUElavians dropped to 2nd place. A tough defeat, that had an ironic finish, when compared to Matchday 1.

Matchday 5 saw HUElavia host the #4 seed of the group, Schottia at Estadio Lucimar Silva in Sao Salvador, which was recently renovated and had an increased capacity. The game involved a bunch of shots going back and forth, with both goalkeepers playing phenomenally, until the 90+2nd minute came around and Gallego sent a header that met the head of substitute Toni to send the crowd erupting as HUElavia took a 1-0 victory with seconds left in the match.

Up to now, HUElavia is in 2nd place with 9 points, with a record of 3-0-1, with a game in hand. They are one point off from current leaders, Mercedini, who HUElavia is superior in goal-difference and head-to-head results. With getting through the three toughest teams for HUElavia with 6 points out of a potential 9, HUElavia now have the chance to capitalize on this historical run, having a potentially easy set of games versus Sinyal, San Carlos Islands for home and away, and the away legs against Aurevbush and Schottia.

Although, HUElavia is very optimistic versus Mercedini and Krytenia, especially since they gave both of them a strong fight, and for both of them to aspire for Qualifying for the World Cup, they must get a vital point in HUElavia, in the capital city of Curumba, who will host both games in Estadio Edison Arantes and Estadio Ronaldo Lima for Mercedini and Krytenia respectively.

VAMOS HUELAVIA! FORCA HUELAVIA!

POPULAR SPORTS WRITER BORTMORVIUS "BORT" STEVENS ARRESTED; CHARGED WITH MAKING VIOLENT THREATS OVER INTERNET
Watch TPS special 'Lossy in the Sky with Demons' on TNN this Sunday at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. TST

TOKAI, TORISAKIA - Earlier today popular sports blogger and writer for TSPN Bortmorvius "Bort" Stevens was arrested by the Torisakia Bureau of Investigation in conjunction with the National Office of Security Enforcement, Torisakia Counter-Terrorism Force, and the Tokai Metropolitan Police. The arrest comes only a few days after Stevens wrote on his blog about his home being raided by the TCTF where they seized his electronics while he hid in his closet. Stevens has been charged with making violent threats over the Internet that crossed country lines as well as illegally obtaining personal information and distributing it over the Internet that crossed country borders without permission. Stevens is being held on bond at T$750,000 at Tokai State Penitentiary.

Stevens first run in with the law occurred a few months ago while he was covering Torisakia's World Bowl 37 run. After a game against Geektopia, Stevens received an email from someone claiming to be from Geektopia scrutinizing him over his complaints about the difficult pronunciation of Geektopia's player's names and told him to "just abbreviate" and even made a snide remark about Stevens' famous closing line "Take care and don't [x]". In retaliation, Stevens sent an angry email back, full of obscenities and namecalling. Stevens even sent many violent threats to the person, claiming that he was "trained in the military" and "had over 300 confirmed kills" and would "dispatch the entire Torisakia military" to come "destroy" them. Stevens then collaborated with his fried Boris "Boharry" Dukakis to trace the senders' IP address, which they then used to look up personal information about them and distributed it over social media in an attempt to "show him not to mess with [me]". The TBI became aware of the matter only a few days later due to an anonymous report and by the next week were launching a full investigation. Stevens and Dukakis were questioned thoroughly with both, specifically Stevens, adamant that they did nothing wrong and that the Geektopian "deserved it". After reviewing the email many times, the TBI agreed with both of the men that the sender was indeed a sour person and let both of them go.

The TBI became involved again when they learned that Stevens had flaunted about how he got away with the matter to his colleagues and on his blog, Sports with Bort. They also learned that Stevens had talked about hiring a personal hitman to kill the sender from a suicide letter left by Roger Heinerschmaltz, a colleague and close friend of Stevens who tragically died just weeks before. This new evidence was enough for the Supreme Court to issue a search warrant of Stevens' property. A few days ago the TCTF in conjunction with the TBI raided Stevens' home in Tokai. No arrest warrant was out for Stevens at the time. According to his post on his blog, Stevens apparently heard the banging of the TCTF at his door and them stating they were there for a search warrant and decided to hide in his closet until they left. The TCTF forcibly broke into Stevens' home and seized all of his electronics including his computer, laptop, phone, and gaming systems. Stevens expressed concern on his blog post that he may be going to jail soon and he might get "Murvin'd", referencing the arrest and execution of another famous Torisakian sports blogger Murvin Alexander a few years ago.

After reviewing the evidence, which has not been made public yet, found on the electronics, the Supreme Court issued an arrest warrant for Stevens. Early this morning around 8:30AM TST, the TBI, NOSC, and TCTF descended on Stevens' home to arrest him. Stevens put up no resistance and was swiftly taken into custody without any issue. He was taken to Tokai State Pen for processing and questioning and was brought before a judge for a bail hearing. TBI spokesman Dennis Belsharrausur has told TNN that Stevens will remain in jail for at least the next three days until either his bail is posted or a bail bond is agreed upon. Numerous fans of Stevens have expressed sympathy for him and numerous online crowdfunding campaigns have been set up in order to raise money to bail Stevens out of jail. As of now the highest amount of these crowdfunding campaigns has reached around T$275,000.

Bortmorvius "Bort" Stevens, 34, was born in Eofowine, Torisakia and grew up in the Malloye suburb of Tokai. Stevens attended the University of Tokai and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications with a concentration in Digital Journalism. Stevens was the head writer for the university's sports column in the school newspaper and ran his own sports blog that covered nationwide. After university, Stevens was hired by TSPN as a part time sports writer for their website. Stevens eventually climbed the corporate ladder and became a lead writer for TSPN and started his own sports blog Sports with Bort about four years ago. Stevens blog has covered sporting events and news from all levels in Torisakia, including college, pro, and International competitions. Stevens was doing special reports on Torisakia's World Cup 83 participation prior to his arrest. Stevens gained a cult following for his zany personality and "fair and accurate" reporting.

Preview of Matchday 5: (47) Chromatika @ (UR) Far Wor Eryunce @ FAr Wor Eryunce
Starting XI: Williams; McBee - Will - Anderson - Austic; Etienne - Montague (C) - Limones - Conrad; Vidal - Sierra.
Preview: The other result of note in the last matchday was Port Ember's defeat at the hands of one Far Wor Eryunce, at home. The Chromatiks face them now, riding high off their win against Qusmo; they must be vigilant to make sure they don't drop any more points to lower ranked sides, like they've done against Port Ember and Competitive Solitaire already. The youngest defense starts, while Parker gives the Captain's armband to Alyss Montague, something she hasn't done too much of in her illustrious career. The strikers for this day will be Vidal and Sierra as they compete for the depth positions should the Chromatiks proceed to a further tournament. As they start the second third of qualifying, sitting one point behind first, the Chromatiks will look to keep up the pressure.

Jordan's Recap

There had been talk among the Chromatik fans that it would be prudent to start fighting for second place in Group E given the early results against Port Ember and Competitive Solitaire. More conservative minds say wait until the halfway mark, and I was one of them.

In came Qusmo - three wins and no losses, only having conceded one goal, ranked twenty-two, to the Capitalizt Dome. Xynat-Evela Cuf, Cunix-Betva Tla, Zenon-Gerol Kal, Yelto-Alfan Ono, Jerat-Jonto Jan, Illinx-Kepex Zev, Gavax-Nenzi Abe, Helek-Nenzi Ono, Forzu-Ralox Kal, Paliv-Xilit Max, and Xilit-Zaxac Yol. All interesting names, if you ask me.

The match started in an exciting manner for the Chromatiks as Hermaeus Mora stole the ball away from Gavax-Nenzi Abe and crossed it over to Keira Andisori, the Captain almost sliding the ball past the keeper Xynat-Evela before Xynat-Evela was able to parry the ball away.

It became apparent very quickly that Silian Parker was holding the Chromatiks to keep the ball away from the Qusmi'y. Hermaeus Mora and Mimi Kuzmi showed their ability to work with Henri de Aea and Yeri Ibex to keep the ball going back and forth; Jazmin Dragana and Molly Thorben brought the speed from the sides to push the pace of play to the strikers.

This match was really defined by three key Chromatiks; Jillian Nier, who stopped all four shots on goal from the Qusmi'y, the most dangerous shot of those being from the Captain, Illinx-Kepex Zev. Jazmin Dragana, who had three assists and made all of the goals happen; and one Kaytlyn Victoriane, who made her first bold tally on this qualifying cycle.

Kaytlyn Victoriane. She of Lammerton, she who won the Galacticos Award a few cycles ago, made the Qusmi'y squirm. The first strike in the twenty-second was set up by Jazmin who brought the ball right by Cunix-Betva Tla; Victoriane took a one-hopper and slammed the ball to the left corner of the net.

Dragana herself scored off of a corner in the sixty-forth; and then in the eighty-first minute, Dragana's shot was deflected off the post, only for Victoriane to be right there to shoot the ball quickly.

And... That was that. Three-nil. Sure, it was at home, and perhaps the Chromatiks just needed a moment to embrace the gravity of the situation; but a monumental moment indeed.

Lucjusz Stef - The Unknown Quantity - Part 1

When doing research on the Chromatiks who have played for the national team, the player who has been written about the least would be Lucjusz Stef. Pronounced Look-Yus, he is a product of Eyrods, the Eyrod City High School, and Eyrods Tech University. His parents are former Silvers in the Color Code; they are both currently in jail for crimes committed against the people.

Why do I know that? He's finally given me clearance to talk about his life. A rather lonely figure in the locker room, Stef had one hundred twenty-one caps in his career with the Chromatiks; tall imposing, he played the enforcer type alongside Erika Morningsar.

In the offseasons, he has been seen visiting the facility that his parents are at, talking to them, trying to convert them. Stef has also earned a Ph. D. in Civil Engineering, and taken on a few improvement projects in the magical Eyrodii Jungle. How is it that there is a temperate jungle in Chromatika, which is quite cold? We still don't know all the answers for that.

Oh, and the biggest shocker, or maybe it's not a shocker?

Lucjusz Stef is married. But to whom, you ask?

Cappucine Marie-Antoinette Jacquelline Krasnikova.

Yes. Krasnikova. As in, sister to Alina Krasnikova...

TEAM LOST, COACH FIRES HIMSELF!

Yesterday the national team lost once again against Cosumar, leading to the withdrawal of the coach Cinga Munrich. On the press conference he said:

” I am not the person your country needs anymore. I am too old for this team. Your country needs a young football specialist, who can atleast get 1 win in these qualifiers. I quit!”

Although, the coach said his speech shortly, like usual, the fans understood that this means the end of the greatest era Locharian football has ever had. The fans are sad. The country is sad.

Geektivities

THIS JUST IN: HOLY ****

Yeah, that's right, I swore on this show, motherfucker! And if there's any more negative news about Geektopia, get ready for a shitcoaster. Don't know what I'm talking about? We just had an invasion by our little friend Aimena and they took one eight of our territory and are holding Hyper-terinnentoldeus hostage as we speak.

So while the government was debating changing the flag, people didn't like it and had a civil war at the capital. The army was sent to clear it out but Aimena swooped in and made us wriggle in our own filth. So, the government has announced a poll regarding the general public if they want the state to do anything to save the pompous douchewaffle that is Hyper-terinnentoldeus and if the poll doesn't succeed I hear they're running a public election for Geektopian king.

Oh yeah, also that dunce HR Terinntothol was murdered by a Torisakian dissenter in the war. Thank god, our shows revenue nearly halved the ratings on our debut week!

A lot to take in, right? Now let's move on to the mediocre side of things with qualifying. Two draws, one loss. I'm Gary Rozensweig, and this has been your weekly dose of newsery.

Flavovespia 2–2 Freeport

Flavovespia's quest for their first international win once again fell short against Freeport. Although still only 3 points off of 3rd place, the match against Western Bjornaic is looking key for the Hornets to get their campaign back on track for a respectable mid-table finish. The nation is also gearing up for it's double header against Eura and then Ko-oren in successive matchdays, with the hope of potentially taking at least 1 point.

Lining up in their 3-5-2, the same starting XI was deployed, Conor Harrington recovering from a small strain and favoured over David Meehan, at least for the time being. Lining up in the yellow home kit, with black shorts and socks, the hosts looked to try and take the game to Freeport, who so far have had quite an anonymous tournament. They had an early chance to take the lead, but Steven Hall's driven shot from the edge of the box was well saved.

The Hornets got the lead though after 14 minutes. Good interplay at the front saw Hall put Scott Coleman through into the box. Coleman drifted outside, before a deft flick of the heel caught out the defence, as Andrew Mason tapped in an easy shot to get his first international goal. The hosts had a 1-0 lead, in a match they hoped to take points from.

Sadly the lead lasted just 10 minutes. From a free-kick, the wall did it's job in blocking the direct shot, but the rebound fell somewhat fortuitously to a lurking striker, who had an easy shot to make with Harrington out of position from the initial shot. 1-1 and it was now all to play for.

In the 27th minute, the Hornets fell behind. Tony Gardner caught the trailing leg of a striker just inside the box, giving away a penalty and a yellow card. The penalty was hit well into the top corner, little any keeper could do about it, and Flavovespia were down 1-2.

The 42nd minute was when the equaliser came. James King went direct with a 28 metre free kick, and the ball went straight into the right hand side of the net. Arguably the keeper could have done more to stop it, but Flavovespia had an equaliser close to half-time, and the match looked set to be right in the balance in the second half.

Unfortunately for the fans at Saints Park, the second half saw a lack of action, and was compounded by failed attacks, frustrating passes and some rather unnecessary tough tackles. Tony Gardner came off after 48 minutes, and less than a minute later Neil Wright was booked for an overly aggressive tackle. Freeport received 2 yellows in a minute, one for a shove on Hall, and then a follow up when another player got involved in the ensuing argument.

Guoliang Fu came on as a substitute with 10 minutes to go, replacing Coleman, and at his home club stadium, he was unlucky to see his shot fizz just outside the post, with the keeper beaten. Nevertheless it was a good spell for him off the bench, as he fights to start against Western Bjornaic. Ronald Maddox also returned to the pitch, with Charles Winward struggling to adapt to a LWB position, and for Maddox, he looked comfortable there.

2-2 it finished. A somewhat frustrating match, Flavovespia will lat least take comfort from it not being a loss. Western Bjornaic presents a good opportunity to take 3 points in the next game, but the Hornets know they need to take it, else they could be on just 2 or 3 points after 7 games, given the strength of Eura and Ko-oren, who are fighting it out at the top of the group.

Domestic News

Apsbrooke are the big movers in the transfer market this week. Traditionally a small town team of Challenge League status and fighting relegation, they’ve found themselves much nearer the business end last season, and are now making waves. Tony Elvidge of relegated Carston Green was always likely to stay in the Super League, and it is Apsbrooke who secure his signature, in a deal worth £17m. Sean McClafferty, 22, their star striker though, leaves on a current record £25m deal to reigning champions Stanmorn, the offer being too good for the team to turn down, and the striker ambitious to play UICA football.

John Lawler is still in talks with Waldster, with the player keen to make the move from Butterfield Rovers, but the evaluation of the player seems to be a sticking point for the two clubs. Young defender Richard Bowman, 23, from Challenge League Abbots Lunsel, has been confirmed as a new signing for Waldster FC, in a £4.5m deal.

Outspoken veteran Ricardo Goncalves, 32, who left Stanmorn on a free transfer having been limited in opportunities, looks set to try his hand at Hadford Hill in the next season. The striker is only on a 1 year deal it is believed, but there’s financial incentives for goals and appearances, along with a believed automatic extension clause if certain targets are met. Certainly Hadford Hill look set to push the boat out with their signings this year, in a bid to re-establish themselves as a top team.
Formerly the Republic of Greater Waldster, internationally known as Greater Watford. IC It's a long story (OOC I didn't like using real place names)

The Tridents Suffers an Embarrasing Defeat!

Port Ember 3 - 4 Far Wor Eryunce

By Erica Davies - Port Ember Times Sports Section

The Tridents have suffered a dissapointing and slightly embarrassing loss against Far Wor Eryunce at the Waterstad International Stadium this tuesday with a final score of 3 - 4.

Port Ember lost this match which forms part of the World Cup Qualifier Run, Group E. The Tridents started their run looking impressively, but it is quickly taking a turn for the worst as they have now lost two matches in a row, placing their qualifying hopes in jeapordy.

This loss has dropped Port Ember to the third spot on the Group E Table.

The Game - Summary

The match was a constantly hard fought game with neither side affording their opponents a second to catch a breath, and was a true nail-biting derby.

The first half came to an end with Port Ember trailing 1 - 3, who clearly struggled to keep the opposition's offence at bay and struggling to launch an effective offense themselves, only managing to do so once in minute 27, with Striker Leon Moult delivering a beautifull goal when Port Ember managed to spring their signature Bait Ambush counter attack.

The second half commenced with Far Wor Eryunce quickly scoring again in minute 51, putting a massive hole on the scoreboard, Port Ember trailing 4 - 3.

This last goal seemed to frighten the Tridents into action and they quickly started dominating the match, lauching continious attacks without letting up. The attacks seemed impressive and showed a different side to this young team. This onslaught paid off twice when proper team work between the new starting midfielder and striker - William Carvello and Ryan Bowman allowed two surgical strikes to land, closing the gap of the score to a narrow 3 - 4. Unfortunately time ran out for Port Ember and the final whistle brought the match to a unsattisfying end.

The Fans

The game was played in the Trident's home stadium of Waterstad International Stadium, with the 90 000 seats fully sold out, and in typical Port Emberian fashion, was filled to the brim - with over 85% of the seats filled with Port Emberian fans. They were loud and energetic as always and surely energised their team on the field. Many fans have expressed dissapointment with their teams loss however.

Port Emberian Player Scores

Goalkeeper (GK)(#1): Peter Smith - 5/10. Seemed to have a off day and did not perform to his usual standard. Managed to only stop 3 of 7 shots at goal, making it his worst performance yet.

Center Back (CB)(#2): Josh Richards - 5/10. This player had a dissapointing day on the field, and failed to bring his A Game. This loss can probaly be attributed to the poor performance of the backline and their inability to shut the opposition offence down.

Center Back (CB)(#3): Jason Lee. 6/10. 'The Prince of the Backline' had his first poor performance of his young career, failing in both individual capacity, and failing to rally and organise the backline as usual. The worst of all was that he was the Acting Captain for this match, yet failed to organise his frontline as well, forcing the front line to fend for themselves.

Full Back (LB)(#4): Alex Kuhn - 5/10. Another dissapointing performance from this player, consistently dissplaying poor performance.

Full Back (RB)(#5): Russel Pierce - 5/10. This player had a dissapointing day on the field, and failed to bring his A Game. This loss can probaly be attributed to the poor performance of the backline and their inability to shut the opposition offence down.

Attacking Midfield (AM)(#10): William Carvello - 8/10. This player started the match, standing in for the legendary Raymond Reddington, who is also the captain, due to injury. Much pressure was placed on William since Reddington is the focal point of the Port Emberian strategy. Although this young man struggled in the first half to find his rhythm, he did find his space in the second half and even assumed the organising and rallying duties for the midfield and forwards when the acting captain failed to do so. He managed to turn the match around in the second half and allowed a wonderfull comeback for his team, setting up two goals. We would like to see more playtime for this talented player. Well deserved man of the match award.

Defensive Midfield (DM)(#6): Steven Packard - 7/10. Was instrumental in shutting down the constant attacks and setting up counter attacks. Was forced to work extra hard due to the backline's failings.

Wide Midfield (LM)(#8): Jason Chamberlain - 7/10. Capitalised well against the tiring oponents in the second half, creating gaps in the left flank of the opponents defence time and again.

Wide Midfield (RM)(#11): Steve Rogers - 7/10. Managed to shut down counter attacks from the flanks regularly.

Central Forward (CF)(#7): Leon Moult - 8/10. His keen eye and fitness combined with his chemistry with he rest of the team allowed him to exhaust and frustrate the opposition endlessly in the second half, allowing a wonderfull comeback. He also scored a clinical goal in the first half.

Central Forward (CF)(#9): Danny Nicovic 8/10. Much pressure was placed on the young substitute as he had to stand in for the injured star striker Danny Nicovic, with large expectations. He finally found his rhythm in the second half and scored two beautifull goals. We would like to see this young talent receive more field time to develop him into his full potential.

Player Scores - Substitutes

Center Back (CB)(#15): Victor White 7/10: Came on late in the second half to stop the bleeding holes in the defence. Did a excellent job at his task and helped turn the tide. Perhaps he came on too late?

Full Back (LB)(#16): Theo Hermandez 7/10: Came on late in the second half to stop the bleeding holes in the defence. Did a excellent job at his task and helped turn the tide. Perhaps he came on too late?

The Tridents prepares to face off against Euran Oceania Territories

Pre Match Analysis & Interview

By Erica Davies - Port Ember Times Sports Section

Port Ember will face off against Euran Oceania Territories, aka The Expats, in their sixth match of the World Cup Qualifier run this Thursday, to be played at the Expat's homegroud - The Flynn Arena in Euran Oceania Territories, a ultra modern 96 500 seater stadium located in New Fligsive.

Team Stats Analysis

Euran Oceania Territories:

This team has played 4 matches so far as part of the World Cup Qualifier Run, in which they have won two and lost two matches. They have beaten Competitive Solitaire and Far Wor Eryunce, and have lost against San José Guayabal and Qusmo. This team is currently ranked as the 87th best team in the world and posseses a long footballing history and impressive infrastructure. For the qualifier run they have played one less match than Port Ember and have scored a total of 9 goals and allowed 9 goals to be scored against them.

Port Ember:

This team has played 15 total international matches so far, of which they won 11 matches, drew 1 and lost 3 matches. Their Qualifier Run is looking average so far, with two losses - against Qusmo and Far Wor Eryunce, one draw against Chromatika, and two wins against Competetive Solitaire and San José Guayabal. The Tridents is currently ranked as the 186th best team in the world, ranking 99 spots below their opponents. They have played one more match in this Qualifier run compared to their opponents and have scored a total of 11 goals, and allowed 12 goals to be scored against them.

From a pure statistics point of view, the next match is bound to be yet another challenging match solid for Port Ember, facing a very strong and historic team, ranked 99 places above them in world rankings.

Team Analysis - Port Ember

Offense: The technical offensive skills of the team is on suberb form. The chemistry between their starting striker duo and their midfield creates amazing attacking oppertunities. Also their signature 'Bait Ambush' tactic is still a highly effective tactic, proven to be effective at this level of football. It remains to be seen whether this team can still perform this well in this aspect with their star striker Nicovic being unavailble to play due to injury.

Midfield: Traditionally the strongest component of this team, under command of the amazing Reddington. However since he was injured, this sector is a question mark, and we wonder if the midfield will hold up without him.

Defence: The backline has struggled in the last two matches and is showing some serious signs of 'falling apart'. Coach Baxer needs to make a desperate change here as it will continue to cost him matches if he cannot fix this serious problem.

Goalkeeping: Analysts have nothing but praise for Peter Smith the starting goalie. The young man is a legend in the making. He did have some tough games lately is is not on his normal excelent form.

Substitutes: The team has a impressive line-up of substitutes, whom have received field time recently, adding possible depth to the team when needed. The extra attention they have received from the assistant coach is sure to play a important role as well.

Team Morale & Cohesion: The 4 year youth program is paying off dividends, as the team has excellent cohesion and on-the-field chemistry. The last two defeats against Qusmo and Far Wor Eryunce combined with the injury of their two best players is having a negative impact on team morale.

Current Form: The team is not on good form currently, having lost two matches in a row and displaying a miserable defence.

Typical Gameplan: Their typical system of tiring out and frustrating their opponents in an attempt to pull their 'Bait Ambush' is a risky play which can easily go wrong and concede a goal. However when it works, it is highly effective, and so far this is still effective on this level so far.

Team Analysis - Euran Oceania Territories

Offense: The technical offensive skills of the team is on suberb form, posessing impressively talented and experienced strikers in their team, with legends such as
Pierre-Louis Le Tonnelier and Tom Duffy as starting strikers.

Midfield: Traditionally the strongest component of this team, having a group of extremely talented and experienced players. Will their experience pose a problem for the unexperienced yet young and fit midfielders of Port Ember?

Defence: The backline is filled with strong and experienced players, yet lacks extreme pace. If the lightning fast and fit Port Emberian strikers get past the strong midfield, they can possibly pose a big threat to this backline.

Goalkeeping: The starting goalie Bart Jones is a decent keeper, yet not the best in the world. The clinical Port Emberians stands a good chance to outwit the last defender with their speed and youth.

Substitutes: The team has a impressive line-up of substitutes, with tons of talent and experience.

Team Morale & Cohesion: This team seems unified, having played a lot of games and tournaments together recently. They have however seemed to struggle to find their rhythm so far in this qualifier run.

Current Form: The team is not on their possible best form currently, having lost two of four matches in this Qualifier Run.

Typical Gameplan: With all due respect - we just dont know. In a polite manner we can say this team and their coach is batshit crazy and is completely unpredictable.

Starting Line-Ups

Port Ember

Goalkeeper (GK)(#1): Peter Smith.

Center Back (CB)(#2): Josh Richards.

Center Back (CB)(#3): Jason Lee.

Full Back (LB)(#4): Alex Kuhn.

Full Back (RB)(#5): Russel Pierce.

Attacking Midfield (AM)(#18): William Carvello.

Defensive Midfield (DM)(#6): Steven Packard.

Wide Midfield (LM)(#8): Jason Chamberlain

Wide Midfield (RM)(#11): Steve Rogers.

Central Forward (CF)(#7): Leon Moult.

Central Forward (CF)(#22): Ryan Bowman.

The line up remains the same, except for Reddingtom having been replaced by Carvello, and Danny Nicovic being replaced by Bowman. The Temporary Captain position has been given to Jason Lee.

Pre Match Interview with Port Emberian Coach - Stuart Baxter

Erica Davies: Morning Coach. You are from what many calls a embarresing defeat against Far Wor Eryunce. Will that have an effect on the team tomorow?

Stuart Baxter: Morning Erica. Indeed it will have an effect - we have played admirably against a brilliant team - we have learned a lot. So, as an effect, we will be stronger than ever for our next match! And to those calling it an embarrasing defeat - remember that there is no weak team on this level. They have struggled yes, but they have obviously recovered and is now playing world class football. We are honoured to have played them at their best.

Erica Davies: Are you worried about the next game?

Stuart Baxter: Hell yes I am! Our opponents are an formiddable and ancient team, who is totally batshit crazy. You never know what to expect from them - but it works. Their high ranking is proof of that. Furthermore we are struggling lately to find our rhythm. I hope we can have our problems solved in time for our next match.

Erica Davies: So for the next game, any changes in your gameplan, based on your opponents play?

Stuart Baxter: There is obviously a weakness or two which I have noticed from the other team, which we will hammer upon, but we will not change our overall play, besides fixing a mistake or two which we have noticed in our previous match. We will be focussing a lot on our backline who is struggling at the moment.

Erica Davies: Good awnser! Lastly, prediction for the upcoming match?

Stuart Baxter: I know many of our fans and analysts alike are worried due to the injuries of Reddingron and Nicovic, and feels that we are in deep trouble due to that, and offcourse regarding the fact that we have lost two matches in a row, and our poor showing in the backline - but I dissagree. All of our players are talented and hard working and used to our system. I know our opponents are footballing giants, so we will be going out with guns blazing. Even if things needs to get physical, we are bringing our A Game!

Geisenfried 2 - 4 Nephara
(4-3-3) 12 - Mercator; 2 - Kielseng, 5 - Thorn, 6 - Steelhenge, 3 - Close (vc); 13 - Saroszi (23 - Breremond 72'), 4 - Shone, 21 - Moxham (8 - Chalk 79'), 11 - Strongbow; 9 - Hawke (c, 14 - Tzorvas 66'), 10 - Metzger
Goals: Hawke 6' 13' 39' pen, Close 64'

Estrella Hawke had spent a lifetime as a world-class striker that nobody would ever quite call the best, at any given moment.
This... didn't really bother her, perhaps not as much as it ought. It wasn't that she wasn't driven. She was an impeccable professional, and she was ambitious - that ambition had driven a move to Athletic, then another to Directus when she figured she'd done as much as she could in Nephara, finally, finally winning that Iron Boot. Roddy Fraser, Pablo Scotti, Keira Andisori... hell, Aaliyah Johnson had won three since she first emerged in the Premiership, but she'd won hers and she'd been happy, and Eura was next on her list. But even as she'd left for thirty-five million, a princely sum, Athletic had slammed down fifty on the table for Sipke Tarala. Always that little bit overshadowed, Hawke. Story of her life.
She wasn't even considered the brightest talent in her immediate family. Her elder brother by a couple years, Tomas, he was the talent. Until he snapped his leg in a bad way aged fifteen. That was the end of that. He'd lost himself to... a lot of things, since that incident. Hawke didn't talk about him, anymore.
Anyway, point was, she didn't worry about comparing herself to others. Hawke knew she was doing everything she could, being the best she could. And if that was never quite at the pinnacle... she was at peace with that.

The Cormorants took a strong side to Geisenfried, hardly at the peak of their powers but certainly respectable. A definite banana skin. They even had their own guy called Metzger - Elias, an 'impostor', as Aristide sniffed.
Hawke clapped people on the shoulders and backs, made them happy. She and Strauss were of one mind on the matter - get them smiling, and they'll perform.
And so they did.
Geisenfried came out looking stylish in their red-and-black chequers, looking to stay compact, keep the Cormorants at bay. Maybe hit back on the break, but definitely maintain control in midfield. Mertens and Fake Metzger were there to lock things down. Unfortunately for them, Chimera Moxham really was that good. It didn't take long for her to race onto the end of a poor pass from the rightback, Schneider, spin back inside and dazzle between both, perhaps a little show-boaty but in the name of directness, before releasing Real Metzger with the outside of her boot. Real Metzger centred with a neat little flick, and Hawke got there ahead of Lindstroem and Wieser to leather home, 1-0 within six minutes.
Six and some change later, it was 2. This time, more pedestrian. The Geisen side had reacted strongly to going a goal down, choked down the spine, and Jaeger tested Hesterine Mercator with a high cross that the lanky goalkeeper very nearly spilled to Thiessen. But she didn't, and claimed it, and rose to her feet, releasing Eloise Kielseng down the right. Something of a maligned figure, perhaps, but Kielseng was the undisputed starting rightback for one of the multiverse's second-tier powers in Kingsgrove. She was capable of running. Running fast, past Loewenthal, outside Metzger, before clipping in a perfectly-weighted diagonal ball that fell perfectly in Hawke's path, on her chest, down to her feet, before a low, unclean finish across the exposed Wieser.
This time, Geisen fought back harder. Loewenthal tested Mercator sharply with a low, powerful strike, before veteran captain Eichel forced Roxelana Thorn into an impressive block. With her arm. The Cormorants protested vociferously. It was a 50:50 call, but home advantage swung it towards the hosts, and Loewenthal nervelessly sent Mercator the wrong way.

There's a useful metaphor that has it that if you don't bend, you'll break. Strauss' Cormorants had bent. Perhaps Brosque's might have broken, but today, they were going to pull back in front.
A spectacular flying header from Genuine Metzger was a little too ludicrous to do it, though would undoubtedly have been spectacular had it landed a couple metres to the left past the stunned Wieser. And Strongbow and Moxham each chanced their arm, but in the end the breakthrough came from the least heralded of that midfield, Monako Saroszi, who chopped inside and out of Ziegler, saw him hack at them, and made... no great effort to avoid being brought down. Hawke was taken off before the hour
Nepharim have never been prolific divers, but perhaps today's vintage were more streetwise than the originals. If there was contact, it would be used. The referee took a nervous moment to confer the penalty, and of course, on a hat-trick, there was only one person who was ever going to take it.
The captain, the top scorer, the seasoned campaigner. Estrella Hawke stepped forward and slammed the penalty into the top corner, casual as you like. It was a hat-trick, a vital one, one that would end up making the difference in a crucial qualifier. But there was no need to be all mercurial about it. They had their lead, and the second half would see them see it out, impressive strikes outside the box from Close and Eichel cancelling each other out. Hawke came off after the fourth goal, the job done, no fuss. She waved to the away end. They cheered her name back.
And that was why Hawke was at the top. No other Nepharim had her goal tally. Hardly any were even close. Despite being merely one of the best strikers in the game, she'd been that for her whole career, and she wasn't about to stop anytime soon.
Going steady. Scoring goals.

Nation 'Crestfallen' after victorious New Saria side labour to exciting bore-draw

Manager Rose Godwin has talked of her delight after a Ross Horn hattrick saw New Saria fail to score as they fell to a heavy defeat against Osarius. New Saria, who are yet to lose a game, continued their terrible form in the World Cup Qualifying after an average start saw them lose to Kelssek 0-0, draw 4-0 to the Polar Islandstates and battle for a glorious loss against Yttribia.

Night Watchman, Wiley Tyrell opened the scoring for New Saria with a delightful pass which sadly went astray resulting in Osarius gaining possession. The Osarian Goalkeeper, Daddy Jeckland, seized on this to dribble past the entire Sarian XV to open the scoring at thirty-love. New Saria were quick to respond, gaining forty yards but were penalised for travelling leading to an Osarian own-goal to set a time of 4:30:31.

As the twelfth quarter began to draw to a close, a horrific terror attack rocked the stadium which added to the joyous occasion. Choosing to appeal the decision of the judges, Sari Manager John McKenzie deployed hawk-eye which found that the terror attack was off-side and thus could not count. The use of gamesmanship has been criticized by some, with lifelong McKenziesceptic Jacob Rees-Arseface declaring "McKenzie is a genius, he believed in New Saria and his deployment of unicorns really turned the game around - contributing to the heavy defeat in the third half."

As if the uneventful game couldn't get any more bizarre, a fleet of airships dropped from the sky leaving the pitch unplayable and killing several players. "I have never played on a better surface" exclaimed Sari legend, Katya Blanc who was making her non-competitive debut, "all credit to the Osarian grounds keepers, this is why I love playing home games!".

Sari Football Federation chief, Position Vacant, told the National Local that this was "the greatest day in Sari footballing history but we'll just have to dust ourselves off, prepare for the next game and hope we can improve". New Saria are currently twelth in the qualifying table, just one Duckworth–Lewis method behind Esportivan nation of the Rushmori Economic Community, who lead the group. As it stands, New Saria are rank-outsiders to qualify for the WorldVision finals and are ecstatic to be so close to their dreams.

"What were you reading?"

"Oh, just the Football results"

"Ah, I missed that last night - how did we do"

"Nil-nil draw".

TAMGU 3 - 0 AXUVA
Image

Scorers: A. Leima 42', A. Nekir 66', 72'

The Tamguna National Team has finally earned their first points on their qualification campaign for the WC83 with a home win against Axuva, a win that may have come as surprising
to some, but not to the gaffer who was sure his team would've won this game. After the first three losses he had to go back to the drawing board and his change of tactics seem to have paid off quite well. The team was also looking much more confident on the pitch, that may be because Axuva is one of the weaker sides of their group, but nonetheless.

After the final whistle the capital turned into a giant party with everybody going on tours with their cars to honk around, play some nationalistic music and wave their flags around. Many
squares were turned into dance floorsfor people to celebrate all night. Some of the footballers like Soros were seen partying with the people, we don't know how that will affect him getting started again, considering the striker only managed to get an assist in the three goal win.

    Match Statistics
  1. Posession% TMG 58-42 AXV
  2. Shots (OT) TMG 14(10)-(2)5 AXV
  3. Fouls (OS) TMG 11(3)-(6)12 AXV
  4. Corners TMG 6-3 AXV
  5. Pass% TMG 91-82 AXV
  6. Passes TMG 562-406 AXV

Player Ratings:
ST-Ante Nekir [9,5/10]
The stirker would've been a 10 if he hadn't messsed up a pass that lead to a goalscoring opportunity at his goal. His 7 attempts on goal only had one miss.
ST-Paletar Soros [7/10]
Soros had a very average game, but did manage to get an assist to his striking partner Nekir. He had three attempts at goal and only one hit to the target.
CAM-Aleida Leima [9/10]
Leima is normally known for his passing techniques but he has proven in this game that he can shoot just as well with a wonderful shot right outside the box that met the top right corner of the target. The goal before the half time whistle has encouraged the team to get more goals and win the game.
CM-Uruke Mantes [7,5/10]
Uruke had an impressive performance on the defensive side and took a lot of pressure off of the defenders' shoulders. He had some slips in passing but nothing too important.
CM-Sayken Ilko [7/10]
Sayken continued being the reliable playmaker that he is in this game as well. His performance wasn't anything special, but he did all of his midfield duties excellently.
LW-Tanel Tayman {8/10]
Tanel has shown his excellent dribbling abilities that he has not been able to show until now. One of his runs ended up in a well delivered cross being volleyed in by the skipper to put the final nail in the coffin for Axuva.
RW-Reki Reizo {7,5/10]
Reki has taken part in a lot of attacks but hasn't produced a goal. This doesn't mean he played poorly however, as he carried the ball to very important positions that ended up in goals.
CB-Dano Teilar [9/10]
Dano was an absolute brick wall at the defense and is the primary reason why Axuva had so few shots.
CB-Pate Konar[9/10]
Pate has shown very solid performance defensively and has shown why he's the best of the country.
CB-Eren Postas[8,5/10]
Eren, the young star seems to have not been stressed at all playing for his country for a major competition for the first time ever.
GK-Toy Estogas [6,5/10]
Toy's low score is not because he has played poorly, but he hasn't been allowed to play at all because of the defense. He made 2 saves and caught a corner.

Brenecia 0 - 3 Hapilopper
(4-4-2) 20 - Farrell; 2 - Broxham, 22 - Horgan, 6 - Varney, 3 - Quill; 7 - Crowther (15 - Cheney 56'), 21 - Case (8 - Matheson 84'), 13 - Wheeler, 11 - Keynes; 9 - Riordan (17 - Bremner 84'), 10 - Ciogach

Some people are just born stubborn. Lilith Woods, who emerged from a complicated Caesarean, was evidently one of them.
Twenty-nine years had passed since then, and they'd mostly consisted of Woods surprising people. She'd quickly adapted to using technology in Brenecia's conservative press landscape, and quickly embraced the more traditional arts of journalism, like persistence, and not being afraid to annoy people. Rather embracing it, in fact.
Unfortunately, she'd annoyed rather a big fish this time. She knew this when she heard her door splinter inwards, a solid black boot having smashed clear through it.
"Ah," she said. "They're here, Szymon."
"That was quick," said her husband, washing dishes in the adjoining room.
"Yeah, can't say they're not efficient." She rose up out of her chair, thumped her giant, toothy mongrel affectionately on the side and went to go open the door. The boot retracted, then slammed into the door again, and again, and-
Woods opened the door slightly, and a burly-looking man overbalanced forward and slammed into it face-first.
"Hello!" she said, cheerfully. The man groaned. The man behind that man reared back a fist--

Woods woke up on the floor, and a man in a grey suit soberly explained her new circumstances to her. She'd been disappeared from the Observer, like her article. She was going to have to disappear from the Brenecian press as a whole. She should consider herself lucky not to be disappeared from the world.
The next day, the Herald, based out of Nephara, offered her a job as their Brenecia correspondent. She accepted out of spite, and out of the need to get paid.
Thus she found herself reporting again, startlingly quickly, in Rozelle with a press pass around her neck to report on a fundraising dinner held before the coming match against Hapilopper. The last big occasion at home, the Patriots had disappointed. This time, surely not.
Anyone who was anyone was there, in all their finery. Of course, so were the Prime Minister's inner circle. Woods ticked them off, one-by-one, and was struck by a comparison to the Seven Deadly Sins which she was sure would be a hit in weirdly-demi-Catholic Nephara.
Lust was the seedy-looking Markus Jones, Minister for the Environment, somehow good-looking in a slouchy, 46-year old kind of way. The less said about his... history, the better.
The expansive figure of Maurene Everard provided a natural fit for Gluttony, Ward's greatest friend among the mining magnates that served as natural Brenecian oligarchs. Loud, boorish, bloated... and shrewd, which was easy to overlook.
Avarice - Woods always preferred 'Avarice' to mere 'Greed' - was fittingly the relatively young Treasurer, Clovette Packard, a drawn, gaunt figure who always found the money to draw away from welfare and into Ward's various vanity projects.
Sloth would be Lancelot Heward, a veteran CPP politician who had seen so much, learned so much, never quite put his head above the parapet. It wasn't so much that Ward was close to him, as he was her connection to the mainstream of the party, traditional affluent conservatives.
Wrath... would probably be the chief of Ward's secret police, if anyone knew who that was. But that would sort of defeat the point of having secret police, wouldn't it? The general, Blackwood, would have to do.
Envy was Heward's opposite, the naked ambition of Justin Paterson, Minister for Defence. It didn't matter who had to get stabbed so long as Paterson had his crust.
And Pride? Well, that was the main event. But where was the Prime Minister? Surely--
"He-hehm."
Woods was nerveless. She liked to think so, anyway. But she nearly jumped out of her skin. She just about managed to about-face with composure, finding herself nose-to-nose with a solid block of a man in a well-tailored grey suit. "And who might you be?"
"Barrett Kerr, Ms. Woods."
Woods sniffed. "Is that supposed to mean something to me?"
"To you? No. But let's talk."
Someone coughed behind them both. Flamboyantly. Woods wasn't really sure how one could cough flamboyantly until this moment, and until a woman clacked over in expensive heels and a fancy green-and-gold dress, someone roughly in her late 30s, expertly covering stress with makeup.
"How about we talk instead?" she suggested lightly, in an accent Woods could only peg as 'eastern-half Nepharim'. "After all, she's reporting for a Nepharim paper, no? And she does have a press pass, doesn't she. Wouldn't want to be seen banishing the foreign press, no?" She smiled, with all her teeth.
Kerr smiled back. "As you say, ambassador. If you want to play the shepherd, be my guest. But rest assured, Woods will not be granted an audience with anyone that matters tonight, change of employer or no. Good day, Jade. Lilith."
He bowed slightly, then trailed off to join the rest of the party.
"Who the hell was that?" Woods breathed, when the coast was clear.
Jade Horvath, the beleagured Nepharim ambassador, put a weary hand on Woods' shoulder. "Some minor official. At least, that's who he's supposed to be. Our suspicions, they run... somewhat deeper. He might well be Ward's personal enforcer. You'd rather not be on his bad side."
Woods slumped into Horvath's shoulder. "So, I'm going to die, is what you're saying."
"Not necessarily!" said Horvath, with feigned optimism.
"Oh. Good." Woods slipped out of Horvath's hand, and fainted on the spot.

Woods, Ward, Kerr... for all their differences, everyone wanted Brenecia to win on the day. A nation growing more divided by the day could at least count on their team to unite them, in brighter days.
Brighter days were not forthcoming. The Baptism of Fire champions pulverised the sluggish Patriots 3-0. A slick attacking move finished by their star forward, Ernie Stevenson. A brilliant arcing strike from Stevenson. A galloping counterattack from... Stevenson. It wasn't that Hapilopper's star man was exactly hard to identify. Certainly there were a few A-League scouts in the audience surreptitiously taking notes. But the Patriots, for perhaps the first time in Jim Reid's glorious reign, just... didn't have the answer.
The reversion to the mean had been a long process, but only now was the pain truly beginning to set in. All politics aside, everyone knew that the Patriots' fortunes rested on victory in their next match. Reid's job security hung in the balance. Automatic qualification was already, somehow, nine points away.
Still, they could still claw back some ground. All they had to do was beat the group's second seeds away from home, with a battered, beleagured and demoralised squad.
No pressure, right?
Puppet of Nephara.

The following passages are taken directly from Polkopian author, Yakub Orvin's novel, Pelyučidnost', in which he describes the novel as a sort of a revitalization of the "golden age" of Polkopian literature dating back to the 18th century. By releasing the novel to the public, Orvin hopes to grow his international fanbase, as well as showcase the "hidden treasure" of Polkopian literature to the multiverse.

09. Aleksis (Part 3)

Aleksis allowed himself to smile and took another sip as well. “Yes, well this isn’t exactly the group of people I’d willingly surround myself with during my leisure time.”

“Yes, we’re absolutely detestable for most Polkopians, we’re all keenly aware of that, yet I haven’t a clue why that is so. Please, dear Prince, allow me to understand why you look at us with such disdain that you will not so willingly approach us and assimilate yourself within our group?”

Aleksis paused. He tried his best to think of his reasoning for not wanting to surround himself with the people present at this event, but it was a hard task for him to do. The two men sat in silence as Aleksis gathered his thoughts, but the Grand Duke interrupted him.

“You do not have to provide me with an answer now if it troubles you, however I’m great friends with your father. In fact, I’m to have a meeting with him at some point this evening, though I haven’t the faintest idea when that would be.” Sentrov took another sip and continued, “But I have heard great things about you and your fascination with the arts, and I understand you’re somewhat of a prodigy yourself, am I speaking the truth here?”

Aleksis inhaled sharply but cleared his throat with another sip from his goblet. He nodded and used a handkerchief to wipe the dribble of vodka alongside his mouth.

“Yes, that is correct. I would not necessarily consider myself a prodigy at this point of my life, as I’ve still much to learn, and it would be many an insult to the maestros of our time to compare my skillset to that of Dorovskiy or Bracco.”

Sentrov’s face lit up. “Ah, but that’s the thing isn’t it? You’ve much to learn, of course, but haven’t you entertained the thought of using your position to acquire these skills? You are a royal, after all, and it’d be insulting to the crown if one were to refuse a request from the Prince himself!”

Aleksis felt his face turn a bright shade of red. “Yes, but I must admit that I do not know anyone of the sort who would be able to assist me in this. I’m under the impression that sending word to a man of talent is a very long and difficult process, should one not know them in the flesh.”

“My dear Prince,” Sentrov laughed and stepped closer, almost whispering in Aleksis’s ear, “Do you truly believe that the only people present here are landowners and thieves? Polkopia’s finest men and women are here tonight, many of whom boast incredible talent which is not seen immediately though one’s physical appearance. Please, if you are to listen a word of advice from this conversation, I’d suggest listening to what I’m about to tell you. Use these events to your advantage. However uncomfortable and anxious being present makes you, you must use this opportunity to meet people who can benefit you in the years to come, for life is uncertain enough in Polkopia where aligning yourself with a certain group of people can be risky yet rewarding. For your profession, the latter is still present whereas the former is hardly applicable to you in your position, so I would keenly advise you to associate yourself with some of these men and women out of selfishness, for they’ll surely want to have an opportunity to win the Prince’s favor and will look favorably on you before you even start conversing with them.”

Aleksis finished his cup and nodded. Already his head had begun to feel a little foggy and his thoughts were clouded with various thoughts which interrupted one another at random intervals, but he was still able to listen to the Grand Duke’s words and nod.

“Here, come follow me. I may know of somebody who may be of some interest to you.” Sentrov walked past Aleksis and into the crowd of people and Aleksis hesitated for a moment but soon followed suit.

In the two seconds that it took him to collect himself and follow the Grand Duke, Sentrov had been completely lost in the crowd and Aleksis pushed past people in order to get a glimpse of the man, who found it relatively easy to glide past the crowd whereas Aleksis could not navigate the floor with the same grace as Sentrov. Aleksis stumbled and clumsily bumped into several people along the way, resulting in several glares from those nearby, however nobody dared confront him.

“My Prince!” A gruff, unfamiliar voice rung in the Aleksis’s ears and a burly man stumbled in front of him and bowed, spilling much of his drink onto the floor below them. “Forgive me, but you are Prince Aleksis?” The man’s voice was slurred and barely intelligible, but Aleksis remained polite regardless of the mannerisms of this man.

“Yes, to whom do I have the pleasure of speaking?” Aleksis replied.

“Hah!” The man let out a booming laugh and those around him looked at him with contempt. “Don’t worry about my name right now, for I am in no state of mind to make a proper introduction of myself, see.”

The man stepped closer and looked straight down at the Prince. He plopped a hand on his shoulder in a seemingly friendly way, but the motion was surely affected by drink and the action caused Aleksis to wince upon feeling the aggressiveness of his hand slapping atop his shoulder.

“How’re you liking the ball? It’s for you, my Prince!” The man laughed again. His odor was that of which emanated from the body after weeks of improper hygiene combined with that of tobacco and various alcoholic drinks. The space around them was beginning to empty out as people meandered away from him and to other corners of the palace where they might discuss matters in peace.

“My Prince!” The familiar voice of Sentrov was heard and the Grand Duke ran up to the Prince and placed his hands on his shoulder. “Let’s go, there’s somebody of importance I’d like for you to meet.” Aleksis watched as the Grand Duke stared daggers at the man and spoke something to his face, though it wasn’t quite intelligible to Aleksis what was said.

The two walked to a corner of the room where a man stood with a magnificent beard and a tilted hat placed atop of his head and who wore an amber blouse covered with a sort of lacy sweater. His pants were puffy and were colored in red and amber vertical stripes, while his stockings were a plain white. His outfit looked almost feminine and something that Aleksis had never before seen, but he seldom paid much attention to fashion and therefore took this trend with a grain of salt.

“Ah, my Prince!” The man posses a warm, welcoming voice which was almost overshadowed by the overwhelmingly loud commotion around him and Aleksis felt himself straining to hear the man despite being positioned in close proximity to him.

“Please allow me this opportunity to introduce myself,” the man continued, “my family name is not known by many, but you may refer to me as Kraster and might I say that it’s more than a pleasure meeting you in person. Gregori Ivanović has told me many wonderful things about you and I’m honored to meet a member of the royal family who is as invested in the arts as myself.”

The Numbers Game - by "Lunaro" Tsukida

It seems that the Numbers Game is here to stay, and that the fine folks from Soc.kor allow me to do a write up of everything that has to do with the World Cup qualification, and look ahead at the upcoming matches as well.

We're heading into the mid-qualification slog but before that, we still have a vital game versus Eura and the bye. Basically, that's a long time without international games at mid-qual. The Eura game is obviously important. They're second with a game in hand, we're first with an extra game played and the extra three points, and the winner now will make huge strides towards direct qualification in first place in the group. The next time Eura and Ko-oren meet again, we will be in the second last match round and the Dragonflies sit out the very last match round, so we have to secure a WC83 spot at the end of the second Eura game. For now, I'll disrespect and disregard Dreamplanet, Torisakia, and Freeport, who are 8 points behind us with just 4-5 games played. That's a lot of points behind in such a short time. That implies that the Dragonflies have been scary efficient, and they have.

Let's be honest, that's the biggest surprise here. The fact that Ko-oren hasn't blown it against the midtable challengers, the aforementioned trio. That's the Achilles' heel, and it hasn't shown yet - but we've got a second leg against all of them remaining so you never know! Exemplifying the effiency and proper play are a lot of numbers, which I'm going to look at because that's the promise of the title of this series, after all. Juliasterinthen has utilised nearly the same XI for all five games up until now so it's easy to compare games. Even more than that, Juliasterinthen has used nearly the same XI for the last two World Cup qualifications so that makes it even easier to pinpoint the differences between then and now.

First of all, goalkeeper Theshendan has been subpar during this qualification cycle, so we know that isn't a deciding factor. What is a night and day difference is the xG (expected goals, ~ soc.kor) allowed. This has gone down from 0.8 to 0.5. On average, during the 82nd WCQ, we could expect to concede a goal about 0.8 times per game. Over 18 matches, that's 14.4. In actuality, we conceded 12 across those 18 games. In WC83, with 5 games played, we should expect to concede 0.5 goals, so 2.5 goals in total - and yet we conceded 3. In short, the defence gave up better quality chances last cycle, but were lucky in regards to how many goals were actually given up - regardless of how pressured the defence was and how much we were with our backs against the wall. This cycle, we allowed more goals than expected, but it's way down from before. That said, we still have our biggest foe in front of us, and if they have a couple of really good shots at Theshendan, that statistic from just now is skewed. Last World Cup, we faced more teams. Three out of nine opponents were ranked beyond 200 on the KPB rankings, which I call 'easy points'. This time, three out of six opponents are ranked 200th or lower - going from 33% to 50% easy points. Of course, that's all on paper and you still have to beat those worse teams. Last cycle, we didn't, and we gave up plenty of chances in the process.

Lampshire, Van Schelven and Benjamin have noticeably improved at keeping other teams from shooting, helping our xGallowed way down and giving us a few victories as we go.

Even then, I think that's not the best formation we have. Lampshire and Benjamin are quality defenders, and so is Van Schelven, but I think Mizuno is a much better fit between the other two. Lampshire and Benjamin both excel at blocking passing lanes, sliding tackles, and limiting shots - but both aren't very good at simply locking down a single dangerous opponent. That's where Mizuno comes in, he can do that. Every team has some magic striker who can score a goal from nothing, and Mizuno is the kind of defender to take them out of the game. Van Schelven is in the Lampshire and Benjamin school of defending, as far as I can see.

Expected starting XI: Theshendan / Dalton, Lampshire, Van Schelven, Benjamin, Brogley / Yokota, Janoreirinthen, Longchambon / Vaugrenard, Tsuchida
Lunaro's preferred XI: Munks / Dalton, Lampshire, Mizuno, Benjamin, Brogley / Yokota, Janoreirinthen, Longchambon / Vaugrenard, Noya

Left-wing Utopia

Postby Zwangzug » Thu Aug 08, 2019 12:43 pm

(Issue 472)

Subroto walked into Wayr Stadium as a capitalist.

Not necessarily an extremely healthy one, in any sense of the word. He was still fighting migraines, and still a Namirite, which in his case and many others meant a consistent commitment to environmentalism and left-wing government policy. It did not mean that he approved of strident identity politics separatism, or all-out karela, both of which were associated with Namiri Forest, Independent's rivals. Chevanthi and Shobhana were both chill, he figured, not the kind of loudmouth extremists. But Chevanthi was her club's captain, she had to be a leader, and Shobhana...well, goalies were always doing their own little thing.

When he walked out, the world had changed.

Nothing was different right away. The Rackham Range was still cold, the trains still ran quickly and efficiently, the AI that operated the train station was still snarky about the loss to Barunia. (Why couldn't they have just installed a broomball fan or something?)

But as they reached Outrive and got ready to transfer, an imposing robot greeted him. It looked vaugely like Shobhana; tall, dark brown, no-nonsense.

"Hello, citizen," it said. "Please be prepared to submit to utilitarian processing."

"What the bleep is that?" Subroto responded. "Is that when you slice my muscles up to produce the greatest good for the greatest number?" He found himself lapsing into Jojie. "Cause nobody wants my neurons. Just keep my feet away from Guariday, would you? They can get their own."

The robot replied in fluent, if heavily-accented, Jojie. "Nothing of the sort will be required. We merely wish to ensure that your economic activity is of value to society."

"Who is 'we'?"

"The Committee for Yearly Budgeting, Organization, Remunerations, and Grants," it replied in English. "CYBORG to you."

"...Who?"

"The AI," Sophie said. "They've, uh, taken over the whole economy thing. Guess we're socialists now."

Subroto stared. He had wallowed in self-pity many times over the years, given his health, his anxiety about whether football was worth it, for him or for anyone.

But for a squadron of AI to come in and judge him? Where would he go if they found him wanting? What about the team?

Ljubanik Named As Locharian Head Coach in Shock Move

MFO SPORT

Former Mattijana Manager Matej Ljubanik has recently been announced as the new head coach of the Lochario national team, replacing the outgoing Cinra Munrich, who resigned following the team's recent run of poor results.
Lochario currently sit second-bottom of group P having taken just one point from their opening 4 games and are in urgent need of results if they are to renew their already bleak qualification hopes in a group that already contains the likes of Cosumar, Eshan and Newmanistan.

The 55 year-old Puljankan left his post as United States of Devonta under 18 coach when his 3 year contract expired, choosing to go back into the firepit of senior international football right at the deep end.

Despite an increasingly turgid end to his time as Mattijana head coach, Ljubanik was responsible for Mattijana's first international football medals when the Marmots managed third at their home Campionato Esportiva, the 20th edition of the tournament. The positive finish means he is held in fairly high regard by Mattijanan fans, but his overall record, particularly in World Cup Qualifying, means he and his balanced, often possession-based football still have a lot to prove.

Ljubanik told Locharian press that he was "hugely excited" to take the reins of the national side, saying there was still "a lot of talent" in the team despite their tough start.

That excitement may turn to trepidation when he sees the tough task ahead of him. The Ginger Tigers are 8 points adrift of Eshan in the playoff spot and 11 behind group leaders and pot 1 side Cosumar. With qualification looking unlikely for the 61st-ranked side, who lie just one place behind Mattijana in the World Cup rankings, the remainder of this cycle may just be about consolidating a style of play, accumulating points and building confidence.

Ljubanik is of course no stranger to a surprise career move. He took the Devontan U18 role despite senior international vacancies in Filindostan, Razenthuria and North Prairie also becoming available during the 80th World Cup Cycle and his return at the helm of Lochario comes amidst speculation that he was in line for a return to the Mattijanan PrvaLiga with WestStrand FK or even former side FK Petrovijanka.

One of the challenges his new job will bring which he would have negated back in his home country's domestic league is getting the fans onside. His only sporting world cup with Devonta resulted in a fairly unspectacular round of 16 exit and his Campionato Esportiva 3rd-place was his only true success with Mattijana despite him orchestrating their rise into the world's top 90. Meanwhile, many Locharian fans are mourning the departure of Munrich, who oversaw the team's rapid rise up the world-rankings and towards the qualification places before this tournament. Locharian media have already heralded his tenure as the greatest in Locharian history. Whether this is because they don't believe anyone else can do better or because it is so far the only era of Locharian football is another question. Either way, it will be tricky for a foreign coach to go in and immediately bring an air of optimism.

Having said that, if he can secure the sort of results the Locharian board are looking for, he may find himself a popular appointment.

It remains unclear whether Ljubanik will retain the services of assistant coach Jeremy Farash or look to switch around the Locharian formation, a 4-1-3-1 that already suits his style of football, but went of fashion later in his career as he switched to a 4-3-3. His first game is a crunch match with 49th-ranked Eshan, not the ideal start when bedding in a new system and style, but a vital test of the squad's character as they look to bounce back from their start and make a fist of this qualifying campaign.
The socialist republic of Mattijana:
As if Austria, Slovenia, North-Eastern Europe and Sweden were merged together into some weird stew of a country.
through resilience, we are strong!

Holy Empire Herald

Letters

Lack of Respect

Dear Sir, Madam, and/or Miscellaneous Other

I was shocked - shocked I tell you - when I watched the Siovanija and Teusland v. Holy Empire World Cup qualifier last night.

The reasons for my concern have nothing to do with the lack of predicted evil, or the apparent lack of involvement from Drawkland - both factors that we were led to believe would feature this tournament - but rather the lack of bikini-clad beach babes among the home fans.

What, I ask you, is the point of engaging in the fundamentally sexist game of beach soccer if there are no bikini-clad beach babes for heterosexual men like me to objectify? More to the point, the home team insisted on playing the match fully clothed. Omnisexual entities like myself were therefore equally unable to objectify the ripped, athletic, masculine torsos of the opposing squad. I mean, the Imperial side is composed of some prime hunks of beef, but I get to see them every week; and you know what they say about familiarity and contempt.

I was looking forward to some horny beach-side goldhorns, and instead I was forced to watch a football match played on ordinary grass, and where only one of the sides was playing shirtless.

What is the multiverse coming to if a sex-crazed omnisexual imperial citizen can't satiate his extravagant and slightly baroque lusts by watching mundies display as much of their bodies as is legal in cross-reality television broadcasts for my delictation and delight? It's not as if I'm expecting an orgy; I just want to watch some fit, half-naked footballers play their sport while they're being watched by scantily clad, nubile young women.

Is that really too much to ask?

Some will claim that the football match itself - apparently an exciting 6-3 away win for the Empire - compensated for the lack of semi-nudity and beach theming on the part of our hosts. I would argue otherwise. I can watch a football match any day of the week (if I wanted to; I'm not quite sure I do). What I can't do every day of the week is watch semi-naked mundies cavort for my unintentional pleasure.

Is there nothing we can do to change this unfortunate state of affairs? Fire off a sternly-worded letter, perhaps?

Sincerely Yours,

Disgusted in New Nicaea

Welcome To The New School
By Rami Niblick in Aeutikiva, Aurevbush

CHANGE is in the air. With Alexander Sampson deciding to stick with the eleven that finished against HUElavia rather than those who started the game, there was an element of both excitement and risk to the team that ran out against Aurevbush. The fans needn't have worried about the latter; this new-look Dragons team was simply too much for their hosts, and looked good for their three points.

Stephen Mariner again got a chance to show the multiverse what he was made of in midfield, whilst Selaphiel Kennedy bagged a brace to stamp his credentials onto the game. The only black spots for Krytenia were an injury to Josh Coquelin - though substitute Freddie Hames was a capable replacement, as his fine strike for the second showed - and the lack of a clean sheet thanks to a shot that was unfortunate enough to deflect off Ellis Ducaine-Petit and past a helpless Marcus Washington.

The next matchday sees Sampson free to scout his next opposition, as it's Krytenia's bye round; those next opponents, though, will be familiar to older readers. It's a game against Schottia, who beat the Dragons to an automatic qualifying place in a thrilling final matchday game back in World Cup LXXIII. With the men in green on a paltry two points, however, don't expect history to repeat any time soon. Onward!

THRILLER AT THE FILLIES
Cassadaigua 4-4 New Lusitania
@ Dagan Airways Stadium, Concord Heights (Att: 78 472)

This was it. Allegedly and arguably their toughest game in this edition of the qualifiers. Victor Santa Cruz wasn't taking any chances whatsoever though, bringing back the elements of the first team. Patríce returned to goal, with Guerreiros, Leiteiro and Cancela in defence with Nevais securing the common ground between them and midfield; Fernando, Mário and Gama took care of the middle of the park with Veiga, as Silveira and Jota were up front. For the home side, Morgan would stand between the sticks, as Curran, Shanley, Enriquez and Crocker would make the back four. Brenner, Mattison, Martin and Pierce in midfield with Ranucci and Rachel Schanke providing the main threats.
The game started well and immediately you could see it would be a good one, with the first goal coming in just twenty minutes of play. Brenner would make a high cross into the box where Ranucci was waiting, when the ball was shot. Patríce then saved it only to have Martin shoot the ball in from the opposite side, meaning the home side were leading. It wouldn't take long for the Selecção to get back at them though, on the half hour mark Gama would pass the ball to Veiga who got it forward to Silveira who could only manage a corner after a good save. Mário would cross the ball in for Veiga to volley in his first goal in this edition of the qualifiers. The scoreline would still change again before half-time, with a counter-attack situation by Cassadaigua where Rachel Schanke scored the goal where the striker made a complex shot look simple. Half-time and the pink and black flag flew proudly. In the second half things just got better with more goals coming in. Fernando would finally break his deadlock with an assist for the equaliser on fifty minutes, lifting the ball up towards Silveira who managed to get the job done earning his third goal in these qualifiers. On the hour mark, Lupe Enriquez pulled a foul on Jota but this time the defender didn't go unscathed resulting in a free kick. Nevais would be the one to take it, breathing in and producing one of his lovely curved balls into the top of the goal resulting in New Lusitania's first lead position in the game. This caused Cassadaigua to invest in the attack with Catlyn Mayor coming in for goal scorer Martin which received applause from the home crowd. Nevais pulled a bit back to act as a second defender at points to handle the new 4-3-3 formation set in place. The gamble would pay off as Mayor would be the one to score the equaliser for them after a great run by Mattison to make it three all. On seventy-five minutes, Mattison had the chance to make a goal herself but put it just wide from a free kick caused by Cancela's "more creative defending" which gave him a yellow. Lusitanian captain Fernando would score the fourth for New Lusitania by eighty-two minutes of play, with Gama passing him the ball that allowed him to put it neatly in the lower left area of the net. They were ahead again and the captain had finally scored the goal, silencing many doubters of his start in the competition. Finally, on eighty-seven minutes, it was the other side's captain time to score, forward Ranucci would give Cassadaigua the pivotal equaliser placing it powerfully into the net. It was an amazing match which showcased the very best of both sides and why they each have a shot at qualification, if they keep playing like this.

Here & Around the Grounds
Victor Santa Cruz told the press after the match that he was "happy with the result considering how everyone played and the fact Cassadaigua is such a strong side" affirming "a draw here away could be vital in the race for Equestria and Banija". Meanwhile, captain Fernando spoke about how he had said that there was no need to worry about his form and that the was still completely dedicated and focused and always looking for his best.
Meanwhile, also in Group Q, despite New Lusitania's valiant efforts they now remain third after the Crystalline Caverns' win at New Karelograd by 0-2. Bengaliana, meanwhile, are still looking for that first point after their defeat to Abaja 2-4 at home. Let's hope it's not on their next game, in which they have to travel to Aveiro for their away match against New Lusitania.

Report: RBSA 'furiously divided' on where to host World Cup Qualifying Playoff Groups

Image
RBSA Executive Chairman Robel Ezera after a RBSA Executive Board Meeting

BUSUKUMA, NATIONAL CAPITOL REGION- One of the interesting things about World Cup 83, of course, is the format that they have for World Cup Qualification. Specifically, the playoff format. There are 24 World Cup Qualification groups, of 7 teams each. The winner of each group will qualify to the World Cup directly. The runner-up in each group will then qualify for the World Cup Qualification playoffs. But it won't be the two-legged affairs that we're used to, the sort of system where the Kadongo Kamu were able to qualify for their first ever Finals via a playoff, even after only finishing in third place in their group, by defeating Mercedini 5-3 on aggregate across two legs. This time, the 24 runner-ups will enter into six Playoff groups, each group consisting of four teams. Each group shall be played on a neutral ground. What has been decided and agreed to, of course, between the World Cup 83 Host Committee is that the Hoofball Association shall be responsible for the administration and hosting of 3 of the groups, and the Royal Banijan Soccer Association(RBSA) shall be responsible for the administration and the hosting of 3 of the groups.

What the RBSA does will do with their groups, with World Cup Qualifying in full swing and the Playoffs coming sooner than you think, is anyone's guess.

Robel Ezera, the Executive Chairman of the RBSA and the World Cup 83 Host Committee Co-Chairman, told reporters that he had hoped to have this issue solved by now. "We've spent quite a bit of time on this issue, and we will certainly get this figured out in time. There are plenty of fantastic options, and this is something that we can find agreement upon in this room soon enough." Now, of course, when asked to dive into those options, Ezera refused to dive into details, stating confidentiality reasons. However, this magazine would never simply stop at that- that would be poor journalism. We'd be disrespecting our readers if we stopped there, wouldn't we? Through interviews with multiple host committee members, staff, and even local politicians from various cities, we were able to piece together the options on the table. Here's what we know.

What is agreed: The Busukuma Group

There are, of course, three groups to schedule. That's 12 teams, that is 18 games that the RBSA will have to host, all fighting for a spot in the World Cup Finals. According to one of our sources, who asked to remain anonymous, one of the options has been agreed upon- one of the groups will be hosted entirely in Busukuma, and the other two won't play there. "It's an option that makes sense." This anonymous source said. "Busukuma has the travel facilities, the hotel facilities, and the stadia, to host 4 teams and their fanbases for 6 matches across the span of probably 10 or so days? It'd limit travel, it'd limit having to switch hotels, it'd be cost-effective for the teams and the fans." And that much is true. When we spoke with a representative of the Busukuma Mayor's office, the spokeswoman told us that it was "all but" a done deal.

This, of course, makes sense. Now, of course, the only stadium that will likely host games in the World Cup Finals themselves is the national stadium, the Stadium of the Restoration. The stadium hosted both the opening ceremonies and one semifinal of World Cup 81, and it is looking to reprise that role in this tournament. It, of course, has hosted numerous other major matches, including the AOCAF LVIII Final, two World Bowl Finals, and a UICA Globe Cup Final, for starters. But Busukuma has three other stadia, ready to go, for this. The Busukuma Force play at the 49,000 capacity Mugisha III Memorial Stadium, Busukuma AC plays at the 37,000 capacity Lukwago Stadium, and Capitol City FC plays at the 29,400 capacity Capitol Grounds. All stadiums big enough and in good enough shape to host matches of this sort, and all of them being in the same city means that fans would be able to save some money before the Finals.

Now, of course, that's just one group. What about the other two?

The Busogan Option

According to multiple anonymous sources, there are apparently discussions between the Busoga Islands Soccer Association and the Royal Banijan Soccer Association for one of the groups to be hosted by the Busoga Islands. Now, of course, the benefits would be obvious. This bid is a celebration between the reconciliation and restoration of harmony within the region of the Kingdom of Banija and the Equestrian States, and considering the Busoga Islands was at the center of their conflict, Banija giving up pre-Finals matches to the Islands makes quite a bit of sense. Now, of course, it's not a perfect option.

The source also said that there is some opposition within the RBSA to give games to the Busoga Islands. Not because BISA and the RBSA don't get along- in fact, they probably have a better working relationship, sharing the Banijan domestic pyramid, than the actual governments in Lakiska and Busukuma, respectively. But there are members who strongly believe that since Banija is footing the bill for half the World Cup, the country should get half the games promised to them. Yet another anonymous source, one who was a staffer, told us that "with all due respect to the Busoga Islanders, this is a Banijan-Equestrian tournament. If the Islanders wanted to host games such as these, they should have bid for them- plain and simple."

Another concern with the situation is the availability of stadia. There's only one soccer-specific stadium in the country that seats over 20,000, and it is Lakiska City Field, with a capacity of 31,000. Even though the RBSA has said that their target minimum stadium capacity to host actual World Cup matches is 40,000(as well as 80,000 for the opening match/Final, and 65,000 for the semifinal), their target minimum stadium capacity for the playoff groups is 25,000. Now, of course, that'd leave the Busoga Islands in a bind. There are different solutions if this option is to come to pass. One, there are several cricket grounds on the islands with capacities over 25,000. Could those be converted?

And, of course, the Islamic University of Busoga has a gridiron stadium that seats 45,000. Maybe they could plant grass there? There's a lot of questions that have to be asked with this option. And then, of course, there's a wrinkle thrown out- there are a lot of games left, but the Busoga Islands, as of this writing, are in contention for a spot. What happens if they qualify for the playoffs? If they made the playoff, they would not be allowed to play on home soil, considering the World Cup bid explicitly states that these playoffs would be played on neutral ground, and their own country would not be neutral ground. Still, lots of questions here.

Tri-Cities Idea

Another option that the RBSA is considering, is repeating the concept of the probable Busukuma group, and using that in other ciites. Now, of course, if they did that, the other two choices would be obvious- Herzegovina City, and Istria. Both cities are in the Moravica region, and are two of Banija's most important. Herzegovina City has a population of just over a million people and is Banija's oldest city, while Istria is Banija's largest city with 3 million people. The two cities are fierce rivals, but their population and development means that this could be pulled off.

Herzegovina City could host a playoff group. Of course, you don't need three stadia to host a Playoff group- you technically only need two. And Herzegovina City has those. There is Star Field, which seats around 70,000, and will surely host World Cup games. And, there is Phoenix Stadium, in the suburbs, that has a capacity of 25,000. Not to mention, there is the college gridiron stadium that seats over 90,000 on Northern Moravica's campus, though we imagine that the RBSA will avoid using that stadium.

In terms of Istria, they could host a group as well. Kabonero III Stadium seats 48,000, Eastern Stadium in the Rukunbi District seats 37,000, and both have made it to the big time before. Kabonero III Stadium hosted a World Cup quarterfinal, while Eastern Stadium hosted Baptism of Fire matches, way back when. But if the RBSA wants a third stadium, what would work? Liberty Stadium is a possibility. That 70,000 seater, however, is a dome. Which means, it is turf. They would have to grow grass and bring it in to use that stadium. Is that too expensive for a stadium that would only be used twice? They could even go down to Sisonke in Kitara if they really want to use a third stadium- that's only 35 miles away, and visiting fans could get there easily by train and taxi.

Spread the Wealth

Of course, for the other two groups, the other option is simply this- go to stadia in the country that won't host World Cup games, and hit stadia that hit the minimum stadium capacity requirements(of 25,000), but won't host World Cup games. Places like Isipongo, Askatasuna, Lwanga, Umbazi, etc... That have some good stadium infrastructure, but won't ever host a World Cup Finals match simply because those stadiums don't hit 40,000 minimum capacity, and their BSL sides don't have large enough fanbases to support that. That would bring it a lot of revenue. There are, of course, drawbacks.

One, of course, are the travel concerns. Would it really be logical for one group to be played entirely in Busukuma, while the other two criss-cross the country? Of course, at the end of a qualifying campaign, you've already logged thousands of miles flying across the multiverse, and if you make the Finals, you will certainly be criss-crossing whatever country you play games in- either Equestria or Banija. Of course, the positives are that you'd be able to bring attention and tourism to cities that otherwise would not have the opportunity to gain much international significance.

Obviously, there are a lot of options on the table, and there is a lot at stake here. What will happen? When will a decision be made? While we can't answer those questions, we can tell you this- look to the All-Banija Sports Magazines to find your answers to these questions, as Banija gears up to co-host our second World Cup.

The State Of Play
Group G Opening Matches Review
@ Zoloroni Sports City Stadium - Zoloroni, Mercedini

With Mercedini's three game winning streak against Aurevbush, Krytenia and Schottia coming to an end with a one-all draw at home against the San Carlos Islands, it's safe to say that it's been a patchy run of form for the Golden Eagles during the opening five matches they have had to play so far in qualification. At the moment, Dini sit top of the table with three wins, a draw and a loss to their name beating out Huelavia by a single point, despite Dini having played one extra game up to this point and still not receiving their BYE day which will eventually come on the seventh matchday of the calendar (the final matchday before the first half draws to close). The boys in blue and black will have one more game to play before they have completed the first half of their fixtures, a must-win tie against Sinyal will decide whether or not Mercedini will need to defend their advantage or catch up on a deficit created by one of their main rivals.

..Group G Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts H A
1 Mercedini 5 3 1 1 13 9 +4 10
2 HUElavia 4 3 0 1 10 5 +5 9 2-4 -
3 Krytenia 5 3 0 2 14 12 +2 9 2-0 -
4 Sinyal 4 1 2 1 5 5 0 5 - -
5 San Carlos Islands 4 0 3 1 7 9 −2 3 1-1 -
6 Aurevbush 4 1 0 3 4 11 −7 3 - 4-1
7 Schottia 4 0 2 2 4 6 −2 2 - 4-3

From the table above, it's clear that Mercedini's troublesome form has begun at home, resulting in the Golden Eagles dropping all four of their dropped points inside the Sports City Stadium in Zoloroni, a worrying fact given they will have to play lesser opposition for it's matches in the second half, somewhere where many would expect them to pick up points from. Their dodgy antics at home have been bailed out by their current 100% record away from home, with wins against Aurevbush and Schottia mean that the majority of their points (6 out of 10) have come from outside of Mercedini, despite making up the minority (2 out of 5) of the games played. It has been an interesting start to qualification for many nations in action, and Dini are firmly within that bunch of nations. It is a tighly bunched group of nations with our own Dini, Krytenia Huelavia all vying for at least a top two spot, while Sinyal leads the group of stragglers, who are all at least four points behind the leading group with a game in hand. With all of the top three pushing for the single automatic qualification spot, we can expect to see at least a couple of lead-changes before it is all said and done.

The main advantage will go to Mercedini, who have the concrete and assured lead at the top of a single point, and to Huelavia, who have a game in hand on both of their main rivals and are the only nation to drop points in only one of their games to far, however that did come at the hands of their rivals in cyan, Krytenia, just a couple of match days ago. Krytenia will sit this next match-day out and will have to hope that one or both of their rivals slip up to lesser opposition, in order to have a shout at claiming the top spot in the opening round of fixtures. Following that, it will be Mercedini's turn on the side-lines, with Huelavia that only side in the leading group who still has two games to play in this opening half. The pressure is mounting on all of the top three to maintain their spot at the top, while the chasing group will all begin to feel the precipice of elimination snap at their heals as the window of opportunity begins to close before their eyes.

Many fans in Mercedini would have loved to see a comfortable qualification cycle filled with cricket scores, attractive football and an ever increasing gap between themselves and their closest rival; but it has been one of those cycles where many of the top teams have had to grind out results against plucky newcomers and teams looking to make a breakthrough from perennial Cup of Harmony appearances. Looking up and down the groups, we could see a series of surprise qualifiers as the top seeds fall by the wayside in favour of those taking the qualification scene by storm for the first time. With the number of teams in contention, we could see both the World Cup and Cup of Harmony be filled with competitive tussles and two worthy victors. It is a watershed moment for international football where the top-dogs are being regularly challenged for their throne. We will just have to wait and see who is left standing after the dust settles on qualifying's twenty-four bustling groups.
