Baboukkar signals to Halliche during the match against Timarbia.

In-form Baboukkar leads the Falcons out of group stages

Fahran's national football team had a good run of form over the past week, dismantling Liberimery, widely considered the weakest side in the Copa d'Aeia, 4-0, and toppling Timarbia 4-2 in what has been described at the most exciting match of Group H. These wins both ensured their qualification to the elimination rounds and put them at the top of their group, just above Renneque. Star performances by Baboukkar, who netted a brace against Liberimery and a hat-trick against Timarbia, Halliche, who netted a goal and two assists, El Tamera, who had a goal and an assist, have set fans chattering and created more than a little buzz as the club transfer window draws closer.

Aside from the figurative fireworks going off in the stadiums of Romellea, fans in Haqara celebrated Fahran's early ascendancy at the Copa in style, setting off fireworks of their own amid the final overtime minutes of the match against Timarbia and racking up an impressive rap sheet with local police departments, who gave the traditional wink and nudge as rowdier celebrants were led away to sober up. Conspicuous among the jubilant crowds was a well-soaked Mani Pasdar, who told reporters he was proud of the progress the team had made despite the difficult circumstances. "We played clean, sharp attacking football," Pasdar laughed, "No dirty tricks. No belly-aching over how rough we've had it. No politics or sloganeering. Just hope, grit, and football. I'm proud of these boys."

Image
Fireworks set off in Qhor am-Sadf.

Enthusiastic players, led by the inexorable captain Halliche, upended a jug of water over Pasdar in a cheeky yet triumphant display. When questioned by reporters at the scene, Halliche responded with bravado. "We had a bet going," he conceded somewhat giddily, "I told him 'If we place first, we're going to do this.' He said 'If you place first, you can set my coattails on fire.' I think we took the more moderate approach, really."

In spite of the joyful and hopeful tones coming from the team, the sports media, and the fans, most analysts have a more measured response to the results and to the recent draw that pits Fahran against a strong Vidorian side in the first match of the elimination rounds. Los Blancos-Rojos were deprived of their star striker Mahdavi after a tense match with Alriika and yet still managed to obtain a respectable first place finish in their group, largely due to the hard work of Rico Sanchez. Vidoria presents a unique challenge to the Falcons, one on par with Timarbia, in that they are a strong attacking team with an abundance of star power and a proven track record in international contests.

A bashful Baboukkar said simply "I'm looking forward to this match. I have a lot of respect for guys like Mahdavi, Sanchez, and Del Monte. It's going to be tough, but I think I speak for everyone when I say I'll give it my all." These sentiments have been echoed by other players, who were quick to voice support for Hamid Mahdavi after he was accosted and racially abused by Qalehi hooligans. The atmosphere ahead of the match has been defined by a friendly rivalry built on mutual respect.

A number of predictions about the results have been released with most proving bleak for the prospects of the Falcons. Our own analysis, released yesterday evening, predicted a win for Los Blancos-Rojos with a score of 3-1. Nonetheless, Pasdar has been quick to brush off concerns from analysts and pundits. "I haven't even looked at them," he confessed, "I don't think football is numbers. It's heart, all heart. And we've got that in strides. I'm just focusing on getting ready for the next fixture. I'm sure the team and the Vidorians are in the same place."

Game against Fahran to be difficult, says Daniel del Monte.
Daniel del Monte states in latest interview, "Fahran will be a difficult team to face".
By Thiago Cazalla
17 June 2019

Image
Daniel del Monte is regarded as 'the saviour' by Vidorian fans since group B's injuryfest.

As Vidoria qualified for the Round of 16, many have questioned if Vidoria is able to beat their next rival, Fahran, due to our recent poor performances against teams like Brilliania - among those is Daniel del Monte, a player that is regarded as 'the saviour' and 'the liberator' by Vidorian fans.

Later today, Vidoria are expected to face Fahran as Vidoria qualified for the Round of 16. Expectations are high, as usual, however the great performance by Fahran and poor performance by the Vidorians in the game against Brilliania bring Vidoria's ability to defeat Fahran into question. Many critics have states that 'the Vidorians are incapable of keeping possession, which means they lack the ability to consistently perform well against all rivals'. Daniel del Monte, a player that many people regard is the reason Vidoria escaped the group, agrees with the critics, stating in a recent interview, "Despite our obvious advantages skill-wise, Fahran will definitely be a difficult team to face; we need to focus no matter what. Playing how we played against Brilliania will be disastrous."

"We must play how we played against Crylante; offensive but effective, I like to call it." states del Monte: "We must not hesitate to push forward, every chance we do not take is a chance wasted. However, the defence must still stay solid - the Fahrani have shown that they are capable of destroying weak defences. This game, just like the game against Crylante, will be difficult, but not impossible. If we use our skill advantage wisely, I am sure we are able of defeating the Fahrani even by a high margin. We must be aware of our weaknesses, and not let our opposition use them to their advantage."

"With our great players back, we will be able to defeat Fahran easily." states Ysmael Timego, Vidorian goalkeeper, in spite of many critics stating otherwise.

In the recent game against Brilliania, it was clear that Vidoria had 'lost their charm' compared to their other game against Crylante, a game that was expected to end in a defeat but was instead Vidoria's best victory goal difference-wise. This was a big surprise, especially due to the loss of star striker Mahdavi. He is to return to the pitch in the game against Fahran, but some fans worry this will only cause more injuries on the striker who 'has gone through enough'. Many blame Brugúes, Vidorian coach, but he has stated that the choice was made by Mahdavi, not him, and that he worries as much as all of the other fans. Nevertheless, he is set to play.

Hamid Mahdavi responds to racist chirps from Vidorian football fans.
Qalehi-Vidorian player Hamid Mahdavi is a common target for racist tweets from Vidorian football fans due to his race.

Mahdavi is a common target for racist tweets due to him being of Qalehi origin.

Hamid Mahdavi, one of the best Vidorian players ever, is receiving an overwhelmingly large number of racist tweets from Vidorian football fans regarding his race, stating things like 'go home' and 'f*ck off to your dirtbag' - rather than discussing these privately, he publicly stated his opinion on these chirps, calling the people that said these things 'morons' and '30 year olds that still live with their parents'.

Qalehi-Vidorian player Hamid Mahdavi is often bombarded with racist messages relating to his ethnicity - he usually ignored these as they were relatively rare compared to kind comments from his fans. However, recently, a huge outburst of racist comments directed towards him had occurred, believed to originate from his kindness towards the Qalehi team and mourning them on their inability to qualify for the Round of 16. Rather than ignoring these, though, he publicly stated his opinion on the matter without hesitation, unlike his previous behaviour towards these messages. We have interviewed Mahdavi on the matter, as well as other things regarding his encounter against Fahran.

Hamid Mahdavi Interview - Transcript

Thank you, Hamid, for joining us today.

It's a pleasure to be here. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk here.

What do you think of the racist chirps directed towards you?

Despite my instinct to not react to them, it has gotten to the point that I have no choice but to react. These people do not understand that I have lived here for most of my life, and that Vidoria is what I call home. Despite my connections to Qal'eh, I would never return as I prefer life here; I have built a career, I have built friendships and I have met the love of my life. Vidoria is where I was meant to be, and saying things like 'go home to Qal'eh' implies things that are not true. There people are utter imbeciles, and I do not hesitate to say that.

Do you think these remarks are related to the racism coming from the growing Nationalist Party?

I'm not sure - I have little interest in politics. However, what I can comfortably say is that all of these remarks come from people of Veleazan descent.

Finally, do you think Vidoria is capable of defeating Fahran?

Of course.

Thank you for joining us today.

Thank you too for giving me this opportunity to speak to a wider crowd.

Despite Doubts, Coach Siiggur Is "Burning with Desire" for a Win Against Crylante

Image
Romellia:

Siiggur Ráffobárdni, our fun-loving balding former player and coach, has jumped at the chance to lead Alriika past the Round of 16 for the first time in years. A former player for Julesbárdni, he told AVF in an interview earlier that "I have to sell the idea that Alriika can, should, and will strive further to win the Copa."

While odds are indeed slim for the Stags in Blue, this latest news of advancement came as a shock to many Sangashámman residents, many of whom weren't following the Copa anyway. "I was under the impression they disbanded" says one dispassionate dockworker, heading home after a day at the pier.

Coach Siiggur went further on to address some criticisms from, well, critics, about the performance of the Alriikan team. "We are very talented" Siiggur said, in reference to veteran midfieldman Abel Krupp, and the new phenom Egel Nilsebárdni, along with defender Ridwan Morsi. "We have yet to use that talent to our advantage. We must keep our defence stronger than in the past games, and use that defence to our benefit. We are committed, and that is final. There is no one on this team who isn't 100% committed to it." Siiggur then took the time to bring in team captain Jovvá Vullebárdni to address some concerns of player optimism.

"The guys are very optimistic. We are very excited to play for the nation and very confident we have what it takes to succeed. We have practiced for years to get this far, and we have not come this far to only get this far." he said, after showing the AVF some chirps from the team. "This Copa isn't just about winning for me. It's about reigniting the spirit of Alriikan sports. The pride Alriika felt in 2005, after almost winning the Copa, even when they didn't win there were parades in the streets. It's time we felt that again, even more so than before."

The odds of Alriika beating Crylante is slim, however, regardless of player optimism. "We have to play the best game we've ever played, in recent history, and perhaps in team history. But I'm sure we're up for the task. I'm ready to do it. I'm burning with desire for it. The team is too." Siiggur said quite confidently.

Despite the odds, it is obvious that the boys in blue have made great strides, and will continue to do so in the years to come.

CUIRPTHE 3 (6) - (5) 3 NAVACK

(29', 73', 112') h-EangusNesz (9')
Lizancos (55')
Truelsen (92')

Omid Yazdan Arena, Dahrzor
20:30 kick-off

FIRST HALF
0': And we're underway at the Omid Yazdan Arena! A mild night here in Dahrzor, we'll see how that affects the match.
7': A good chance for Cuirpthe as a rash foul by Rokhaug earns him a yellow and gives Cuirpthe a free kick from 31 yards out, mac Lochlainn stands over the ball. He strikes it with the side of his foot, but the effort will not trouble the keeper as it flies wide.
10': A corner for Navack, Johansen whips it in from the right, Nesz connects and it soars into the top corner! 1-0 Navack!
16': Great save by ú Dochartaigh as he parries the ball wide after a great strike from just outside the box by Nesz.
19': A penalty for Navack as ú Floín brings down Nesz in the box!
20': Nesz breathes, begins his run-up, strikes... and it's saved by the keeper! ú Dochartaigh is keeping Cuirpthe in this!
26': Yellow cards for Nesz and h-Eangus following a tussle after a foul.
29': A lovely through ball by Nerby, Hammer brings it down; but what a tackle by mac Éighe to begin the Cuirpthean counter attack! Navack have too many men forward - it's 3 on 2 in Cuirpthe's favour! mac Lochlainn squares it to h-Eangus who calmly slots it into the bottom corner! 1-1!
37': Johansen stands over a free kick from 40 yards out, he strikes it hard and low but it gets tangled up in the wall and cleared.
43': Hammer rattles the bar with a 30-yard wonder-strike, Brevig gets a fluked shot off in the chaos but it's cleared off the line by mac Lochlainn.
45': 2 minutes added time here in Dahrzor!
45+2': HALF TIME

An exciting half here in Dahrzor. Plenty to talk about, notably the Cuirptheans staying within grasping distance of this match! Here's what Navish manager Odd Sannes had to say during the break:

"We are doing a good job. We dominated the actions of the match even after they found a goal but its part of the game. We are going to talk, fix what we need to fix and come back stronger to grasp the win and qualify."

Mejri, how do you think Cuirpthe have managed to stay in the game?

To be honest, I think their goalkeeper is all to thank for their positive scoreline at the half. His spurt of greatness, saving two shots from one of the world's greatest strikers, has singlehandedly kept the game within the reach of the Cuirptheans. Obviously Navack need to touch up on their defensive formation - which Cuirpthe were able to exploit to gain their first goal. I think this game is perfectly poised to have an exciting ending.

That it is, that it is. It's goodbye from us for now and back to your commentators Omid Afshar and Sadeq Hosseini on IQH Sports for the second half of this round of 16 matchup.

SECOND HALF
45': And we're back underway in Dahrzor. A good first half, goals for either side but Navack seem to be on the upper hand most of the time. Manager Odd Sannes says he is happy with the team's performance. 34-year-old Thor Skagen has replaced Halvorsen at LB during the break.
51': mac Lochlainn sends another free kick wide, somehow further wide than before.
55': Hammer takes a shot, it deflects off the back of a defender and flies towards the Cuirpthean goal. Lizancos sprints in from off the screen! He strikes it - full laces! What a goal! An absolute screamer from Lizancos as he puts Navack on top again! 2-1!
59': h-Eangus hits a hard and low shot but hits the outside of the post and deflects out for a goal kick.
60': Hammer comes out for Sogge.
65': ú Luinnseigh is booked for a cruel challenge that brings down Nerby, Navack gain a free kick from 32 yards out. It's struck by Nerby, but no trouble for the keeper.
73': What a brilliant save by Bruer! A great parry to the side to stop mac Lochlainn's 20 yard shot... but h-Eangus is there at the far post to knock it home! h-Eangus has his second! It's 2-2!
75': Nerby makes way for Hildrum - Navack change to a 4-4-2 diamond.
76': Another shot from h-Eangus is parried wide again by Bruer.
81': A Brevig cross is punched out by ú Dochartaigh. Nesz goes down but play is waved on by the referee.
87': A defensive error by Skagen sends mac Lochlainn through on goal! A great save by Bruer as he gets to the ground quickly to deny the Cuirpthean's attempt.
90': 2 minutes added time again!
90+1': Navack go for the shot! Saved! ú Dochartaigh sends h-Eangus on his run down the pitch, he's outpaced Skagen! He lobs the ball over the keeper to mac Lochlainn! GOAL! Cuirpthe have scored in the final seconds of the game! It's 3-2!
90+3': VAR revision shows mac Lochlainn was offside before the goal was scored! The goal has been disallowed, we're going to extra time!
90+3': FULL TIME

What. A. Game! I have no words. Mejri is literally crying in the corner, the poor Cuirpthean-Qalehi man. Johansen has come off for Truelsen and Navack have gone very attacking to begin extra time.

FIRST HALF (ET)

90': Back underway in Dahrzor!
92': GOOOOOOOOOOAL! Truelsen instantly makes his mark as he heads home a Brevig cross! 3-2!
95': h-Eangus puts a shot from 15 yards over the bar. Navack looking like they're out for blood in extra time, great intensity from the Lhedwinic team.
98': Rokhaug puts in a late challenge outside the box and brings down mac Lochlainn! He sees a second yellow! Navack are down to ten men!
101': A free kick from 27 yards is put wide by mac Lochlainn.
103': Cuirpthe changes to an offensive 4-3-3 with ú Souilleabhán, h-Eangus and mac Lochlainn as the front three.
105': One minute added time for Rokhaug's booking.
105+1': EXTRA TIME HALF TIME

SECOND HALF (ET)
105': Back underway in this absolute thriller. Navack have changed to a 4-2-1-2 at the half, I imagine we will see some very defensive football from them.
108': An acrobative and extended save by ú Dochartaigh denies Skagen's well-placed header!
110': A fumbled save by Bruer is cleared off the line by Mossing.
112': What a volley! h-Eangus secures his hattrick in an emphatic fashion with a great volley from 16 yards out that nestles itself into the side netting! Amazing! 3-3!
115': Truelsen and Nesz stand over the corner ball. Nesz runs back into the box and Truelsen takes some deep breaths.
116': Nesz can't fully connect with the header and he nudges it above everyone in the box. It falls to Brevig on the right, who whips it in, but again, the ball finds no head, and trickles out of play.
119': Nesz is caught offside by a well-placed high Cuirpthean defensive line, the Cuirptheans take their time returning the ball to the keeper and getting it up the pitch.
120': No added time here. We're going to pens!
120': EXTRA TIME FULL TIME

You could cut the tension with a knife here at the Omid Yazdan Arena. The fans of both nations are making sure they are heard as the players take a drink break and devise their penalty strategies.

PENALTIES
NAV 1: Brevig steps up to take the penalty, he's sweating. He takes a few steps back aaaaaaaand.... slots it into the bottom right-hand corner. Keeper went the wrong way entirely.
CUI 1: ú Souilleabhán steps up to the spot now. He's been extremely quiet during the game, we've not seen much from him. He takes a small run-up for his penalty and... it's in! Just skimmed past the fingertips of Bruer, he is unlucky to not get the save there. Cuirpthe dodge a bullet. 1-1.
NAV 2: It's the 19-year-old Hildrum stepping up to the spotlight now. His first ever Copa, one of his first ever Copa matches, with the world watching. He looks down at the ball, looks towards the goal and... what a pen! Couldn't get more top bins if he'd tried, cool as can be! 2-1 Navack.
CUI 2: The extravagent h-Eangus now, a hattrick in his pocket for the game. He hits it quickly, and he wasn't going to miss that. 2-2.
NAV 3: The goal-scorer Lizancos now - looking unphased. He takes a cool and calm penalty. 3-2.
CUI 3: mac Lochlainn stepping up to the penalty spot. His goalscoring luck has not been at the top of its game today. He takes the penalty, it goes left - the keeper goes right; it hits the post! But is deflected in before Bruer can recover and stop it. 3-3.
NAV 4: Truelsen now, the Navish saviour, the messiah, the Holy One. The keeper guesses the right way, but goes down instead of up, the ball gracefully goes into the top corner. 4-3.
CUI 4: ú Luinnseigh begins his slow walk up to penalty spot. He places the ball on the spot with care, looking down at the ditches caused by the players' boots. His breath was heavy, and sweat was dripping down his face. Despite this, though, he fakes out the keeper and secures an easy penalty. 4-4. Great display of shooting prowess so far from these two teams.
NAV 5: Nikódem Nesz, the star Navish striker, walks up to the spot in a manner which suggests coolness and calmness. He has been here before. This is what the hundreds and thousands of training penalties were for, and, like a true master of his trade, he scores a beautiful penalty to put Navack up 5-4.
CUI 5: mac Allastar now, the first of Cuirpthe's non-forward players and the last of their main five takers. He scores a no nonsense penalty despite the nerves to draw the scores level.
NAV 6: Lyngstad now, the 30-year-old centreback. He places the ball down, takes a larger-than-usual run-up, aaaaaand.... it's over! He's missed! This is Cuirpthe's chance to cause a huge upset!
CUI 6: mac Allastar's midfield partner, mac Ór, steps into the hot seat now. Cuirpthe is watching. Navack is watching. The whole world is watching. He drowns out the atmosphere of the stadium, kicks the ball to the left, and beyond the reach of Bruer. It's over folks! Cuirpthe are advancing!

FINAL PENALTY SCORE: Cuirpthe 6 - 5 Navack

NAVISH NOSEDIVE OVERSHADOWS MIDRASIAN VICTORY

Image
Marius Rokhaug sees red as Cuirpthe battle to surprise penalty shootout victory

Dahrzor, Qal'eh ‒ Pandemonium gripped Midrasia and Qal'eh last night as the 2019 Copa d'Aeia appeared to defy all expectations during the Round-of-16. Whilst many fans at home in Midrasia began the tournament worrying whether they would even progress beyond the group stages, they will now know a different kind of pressure entirely as favourites and arch-rivals Navack were eliminated in a high-octane, adrenaline-fuelled clash against Cuirpthe which could only be decided through a penalty shootout. Meanwhile, the Midrasian team managed to score two past Hytekia in three minutes in a game that was dampened only by a late 86th-minute goal from the northern reds. However, Midrasia will now face Vidoria on the 20th of July in the Quarter-finals, their toughest opponents of the tournament so far. But, with the tournament favourites in Navack now eliminated, will Midrasia be able to hold it together?

The Round-of-16 certainly started as it meant to go on, with the clash between Fahran and Vidoria a real treat for the eyes. Both teams fielded heavy attacking sides that sought to outscore their opponents, employing strategies that made viewers ask: "What even IS defending?!?" The final score, being Fahran 3, Vidoria 6! Midrasia will need to be taking notes on how to stop the Vidorian attack in the next round, particularly that of Hamid Mahdavi who made his mark on the Copa by scoring not one, not two, not three, but FIVE goals against Fahran. The striker who was injured early on during the group stages has now catapulted himself onto the top-scorer list in one game alone. I'm certain that the eyes of both Olympique de Lotrique and Almiaro perked up when they saw that performance.

The Midrasian game however was the polar opposite to the Vidoria game, and could only be described as a 'slogfest', particularly during the first half. Both teams sought to create a slow possession-based build-up play which more often than not resulted in the ball being passed around the midfield before it went back to the keeper and to the defence ad infinitum. Perhaps this cautious possession-based approach from Midrasia was the result of their earlier surprise draw against Vrnallia? Either way by half-time the score stood at 0-0.
Image
Whilst Wallonde's cross sees Meridon head home for Midrasia

In the second half however, Midrasia sought to turn up the wick, taking control of the game. Yet, the Hytekian defence continued to stand strong against the Midrasian advance, limiting the team's shots on goal. By the 70th minute, Midrasia had only 2 shots on goal in the previous 25 minutes. Yet this all changed as defender Philippe Wallonde, who was subbed on in the 55th minute, drove in a cross from a rebounded corner. The cross connected with the head of captain Alexis Meridon to send Midrasia 1-0 up and headed towards the Quarter-finals. From this point, Hytekia were forced out of their defensive shape as they sought an equaliser, but only three minutes later, their defences cracked as Enzo Lazaré was able to beat the offside trap to slot home for 2-0. From this point Midrasia were able to sit back and defend, but not before Romāns Aigars scored in the 86th minute, prompting goalkeeper Thierry Florient to shout abuse at his defenders for breaking the clean sheet. Nevertheless, Midrasia remained defensively solid sending them through to the quarter-finals.

Elsewhere the round-of-16 threw up a number of good matchups as Goulong advances against Aleia on penalties after 0-0 in normal time, and Liiduria beat Vvarden 1-0. The Mardin miracle continues as well, as they, saw off Renneque 2-0 with two goals from Ruaiḋrí Ó Coille which now placed him joint-second for the tournament's top scorers on 6 goals. Isolaprugna and Chokashia also finished 0-0 and was decided on penalties which were won by Chokashia. Meanwhile, Crylante defeated Alriika 1-0 thanks to an injury-time goal from Alen de Ouserad.

However, the best certainly was left until last as Cuirpthe clashed against tournament favourites Navack. Cuirpthe had been relatively lucky to escape their group after only gaining 4 points from one win, one draw, and one loss. Navack meanwhile gained maximum points in Group E defeating all challengers with a goal difference of +8. The clash only looked likely to end one way. In the 10th-minute tournament top scorer Nikódem Nesz after a cross from Karsten Johanssen. In the 19th minute, Navack were awarded a penalty that was saved by Cuirpthean keeper Áron ú Dochartaigh.

In the 29th minute though, in a move that mirrored Midrasia's earlier clash with Vrnallia, the Cuirptheans did not back down, counter-attacking through Ón ú h-Eangus to make it 1-1. Game on.
The action continued for the remainder of the first-half as Navack continued to go on the offensive with Jørgen Hammer hitting the bar with a thirty-yard strike that was cleared off the line by Righeán mac Lochlainn. The entire Cuirpthean team was getting back to aid in the team's defence, allowing the score to stand at 1-1 at half-time. Navish manager Odd Sannes seemed calm and composed by the break though, buoyed by his team's dominance of possession and goalscoring opportunities during the first half. Special mention had to go to ú Dochartaigh however for his role in saving the Navish penalty and keeping his team in the game. The second half began in a similar manner as Navack got ahead through a Viktor Lizancos wondergoal. But the Cuirptheans were not giving up without a fight. In the 73rd minute as time ticked down, a shot by mac Lochlainn was parried away by Ken Bruer but only as far as h-Eangus who tapped it home to equal the scoring once more. The Navish players seemed dumbstruck, Sannes gesticulating wildly on the sidelines. A change in tactics changed little to change the Navish team who now looked firmly on the back foot. And in the 90+1st minute, Cuirpthe looked to have won it as h-Eangus lobbed the keeper, only for it to be disallowed through a VAR review. Cuirpthean fans were furious, booing the referee looking ready for a riot; but there was nothing they could do as the game moved into extra-time.

Extra-time once more seemed like deja vu as Navack went a goal up through Truelsen's header. But in the 98th minute a late challenge by Marius Rokhaug of Navack and Olympique de Lotrique saw the defender sent-off, sending Navack down to ten men. Though this had little impact on Navack within the first half of extra-time, Rokhaug was probably hoping he hadn't been so reckless, as in the 112th minute man of the match, hat-trick-hero Ón ú h-Eangus scored his third of the match to equalise again. Cheers raged across the Cuirpthean crowd after what could only be described as a miraculous performance, and the game wasn't even over. Even if Cuirpthe had lost by this point they had to be proud of their team for going to distance against a titan of international football.

But they didn't stop there.

As penalties began both sides converted. One after the other. There was no room for mistakes now, this was all or nothing. As it stood at 5-5 on penalties, Navish defender Hallgrim Lyngstad stood up. A grandee of the team at 30 years old, Lyngstad had been there and done it all before. His run-up looked likely to burst the net through the amount of power it generated, but the ball shot high up into the stands! The Cuirpthean crowd cheered. All of Midrasia cheered. Lyngstad collapsed onto the ground. Head held in his hands. Now Cuirpthean captain Daín mac Ór stepped up. All that stood between him and sending his team to the quarter-finals was Ken Bruer, widely regarded as the greatest goalkeeper in the world. But none of that pressure mattered now. All that mattered was winning, and that's exactly what he did as he slotted the penalty home. Cuirpthe advance, Navack knocked out.

This year Copa certainly doesn't disappoint. But at least from a Midrasian perspective, there will now be hope they can go on to win it now they are the favourites. But they've been in this position before. 2017, defeating Navack in the quarter-finals, only to lose to Crylante next round. They can't afford to make the same mistake again. It's now all to play for in the 2019 Copa d'Aeia.

MARDIN IS. 3 - 1 CHOKASHIA

(17', 62') Mac ConmaraSpajic (31')
(76') O Coille

Makhadi Arena, Siraf
20:30 kick-off

FIRST HALF
0': We're underway in Siraf!
6': An early corner for the Isles as a botched clearance by Pavlović sends the ball behind. O Bain sends in into O Coille - who connects! But the ball flies over for a goal kick.
9': Spajic with a good chance from just outside the box but good goalkeeping by O Cadla to deny the strike.
12': Mac Conmara takes a free kick from 31 yards. Clears the wall but just skims wide for a goal kick. It's all Mardin Isles here in Siraf.
14': Mac Conmara at it again as he hits the post! Chokashia have fallen apart defensively, they need to change, and fast!
17': It was only inevitable! Mac Conmara enters the scoresheet with a lovely strike from just inside the box! 1-0 Mardin!
25': Chokashia looking like they've shaped out now. Spajic nearly capitalises on a Mardic defensive error but a great tackle by de Santo keeps the Warriors ahead.
31': GOAL! Spajic pounces on the counter attack and lobs the keeper to level the game!
37': Pavlovic is shown a yellow for a poor challenge on Mac Conmara.
45': No added time here.
45': HALF TIME

SECOND HALF
45': And we're underway again in Siraf!
55': A slow start to the second half as neither team seems to be able to break down the other's defense.
62': Goal! Mac Conmara nets his second as he dribbles past two defenders and slots it past the keeper.
67': A corner for Chokashia is soundly cleared by the Mardin Isles team.
76': Another goal for Mardin! O Coille taps home a squared pass by O Dala, game is slipping from Chokashia's hand by the minute.
85': Spajic is booked for intolerable behaviour towards officials.
90': 2 minutes added time. Looking increasingly bleak for Chokashia.
90+2': FULL TIME

CRYLANTE 2 - 1 CUIRPTHE
(14') de Ouseradmac Lochlainn (90+1')
(64') Jonsson

Omid Yazdan Arena, Dahrzor
20:00 kick-off

FIRST HALF
0': We're underway in Dahrzor for our second quarter final matchup!
5': Andersen heads wide for Crylante off a Jonsson cross.
9': h-Eangus looks sharp again today as he barely misses a shot from just inside the 16-yard box.
14': An early deficit for Cuirpthe, and totally against the run of play! de Ouserad nods it home from another Jonsson cross to put the Stars in front! 1-0! It's 2 in 2 for the youngster!
19': The Crylantian defensive structure has begun to work really well against the Cuirptheans, they are struggling to penetrate the strong back 4 of this Crylantian side!
25': Hermansen is shown a straight red for an awful challenge on h-Eangus! h-Eangus is having to be carried off on a stretcher, it doesn't look good for the 29-year-old. An early substitution for Cuirpthe as u Connal replaces him and they switch to a more rigid 4-3-3.
35': mac Lochlainn puts a free kick from 27 yards just wide of the post.
42': A close call for Crylante as an u Souilleabhan goal is ruled as offside.
45': 4 minutes of added time here in Dahrzor!
45+3': A corner for Cuirpthe. u Luinnseigh crosses it in...but it flies over the heads of everyone and goes out for a Crylante throw-in.
45+4': HALF TIME

SECOND HALF
45': Back underway in Dahrzor!
52': A quick one-two between Jonsson and de Ouserad results in a Jonsson lob that hits the bar and is gathered by u Dochartaigh.
58': The Crylantians begin the second half with complete domination as they have 82% possession in the half so far, a chance by Hintikka goes just astray and Cuirpthe are looking increasing vulnerable.
64': Goal! Crylante double their lead through Jonsson after a Cuirpthean defensive error! 2-0!
73': mac Lochlainn gets up gingerly from a tackle by Boule which sees him booked.
83': u Souilleabhan narrowly misses the goal on a shot from outside the box. Cuirpthe going full attacking now.
87': mac Lochlainn goes down in the box, the Cuirpthean team appeals but the referee waves play on.
90': 2 minutes of added time!
90+1': Goal! mac Lochlainn slots home as he sprints the ball back to the centre circle. Too little too late for Cuirpthe however as the ref blows the whistle shortly after play resumes.
90+2': FULL TIME

Vidoria victorious over Fahran in Round-of-16 game.
Vidoria defeated Fahran 6-3 due to Sanchez goal and Mahdavi 5-goal masterclass.
By Thiago Cazalla
20 July 2019

Image
Striker Hamid Mahdavi catapulted himself to the top-scorers list in one game alone.

Vidoria demolished the Fahrani team 6-3 in Round-of-16 game, with 5 goals coming from striker Hamid Mahdavi, who was expected to play poorly due to an injury that lasted through the entirety of the group stages - is this the hope the Vidorians needed to reach the success of the Golden Age?

The encounter against Fahran was a great success to the Vidorian team, and evidence that the team can play very well offensively. Vidoria demolished Fahran 6-3, a game that will be set in history with the most goals scored in a Copa game since 1986. Mahdavi's 5 goal masterclass has sparked interest in the world's greatest clubs, such as Bersk and Almiaro, which could be one of the greatest transfers ever for Brestrand at an expected cost of 100 million Ducats - that is, if Brestrand decide on transferring Mahdavi away. Vidoria's success against Fahran has proven many critics wrong, as many expected the game against Fahran to be a challenge and possibly a disastrous defeat, such as Navack's loss against Cuirpthe. However, the Vidorian national team proved the critics wrong, defeating the confused Fahrani.

The game started off well, with an early seventh minute goal from Mahdavi providing hope for the worried Vidorians. The Fahrani defence were clearly not able to deal with such an offensive power, as Mahdavi and Sanchez run up-field without a challenge by a defender, eventually leading to a powerful cross by Sanchez and a beautiful finish in the top-left corner by Mahdavi completely changing the atmosphere in the stadium. 1-0. However, as the Vidorians relax after an early lead, the Fahrani find an opening leading to a rushed strike by Al Otaibi - 1-1 - which was followed up by another goal by Mahdavi, an almost exact replica of the previous one but instead in the top-left corner. 2-1.

The Blancos-Rojos 'celebrated like crazy' after the final whistle by the referee.

As the Fahrani attempted to attack, a brilliant challenge by Julio Ortez saw Vidoria in possession while most of the Fahrani squad was in the Vidorian half. Ortez wasted no time, passing the ball to Ernesto Martinez Jr., who was running down the pitch for a quick counter-attack. Fahrani striker Baboukkar caught up to him, but not before Martinez Jr. passed the ball to Mahdavi. As the Fahrani players sprinted to defend their side of the pitch. a strike from long-distance by Mahdavi gave the Vidorians a wider, more comfortable lead in the 30th minute. 3 - 1. As the Fahrani realised that they were failing miserably before the second half, they managed to beat the Vidorian defence, scoring a beautiful goal in the 40th minute, just before the second half. 3 -2.

The second half saw a huge change in team tactics, with the Vidorians attempting an offensive formation that would rely less on Mahdavi and more on an attacking trio comprised of Daniel del Monte, Hamid Mahdavi and Rico Sanchez. However, little changed in the defence, which backfired poorly as an early second-half equaliser in the forty-sixth minute led to panicking by the Vidorian fans. The Fahrani coach found a way to defeat the Vidorians, and the Blancos-Rojos had to act fast. 3-3.

The Vidorians completely changed their formation to be more defensive, but retained the current offensive trio. Leandro Adrian was completely invisible throughout the entire game, apart from contributing to a foul, so he was substituted off for youngster Nicolás Arvenú. The formation changed to a 4-3-2-1, retaining the trio, but solidifying the defence and allowing the midfield to have more control over the ball. This was an immediate success, shown by Sanchez's wonder strike in the sixtieth minute and Mahdavi's fourth goal in the seventy-first minute. Things were looking up for the Vidorians.

The Vidorians settled with the current scoreline, focusing on possession rather than scoring goals for the last thirty minutes. The possession during that period was controlled by the Vidorians for 68% of the time, according to our football analyser, only lost in small spurts of action. The game was boring and uninteresting, unlike the scoreline. However, in the added time, the Vidorians decided to add another goal to the already amazing scoreline, just to secure their victory against the Fahrani.

The ball was passed from Eric Gonzalez to Daniel del Monte, who was located in the Fahrani half. The pass was perfect, and del Monte began his run towards the goal. Sanchez, Mahdavi and Ernesto Martinez Jr. ran beside him. As the Fahrani challenged del Monte on the line, del Monte managed to pass it to Ernesto Martinez Jr., who saw Mahdavi in space in front of the goal, not in an offside position - unlike Rico Sanchez. He passed it to Mahdavi, and Hamid was able to strike the ball into the left side of the net. A strike that was impossible to save, the Vidorians managed to score their sixth goal of the game in the last seconds. 6-3.

The Copa certainly did not disappoint this year, especially in the Round-of-16; along with this insane scoreline, Cuirpthe was able to defeat reigning champions Navack in an intense game at the Omid Yazdan Arena.

CRESPI APOLOGISES FOR SHOOTING CELEBRATION AS MIDRASIA REACH SEMIS

Image
Crespi at yesterday's press conference where he called his actions "stupid" and "deeply regrettable"

Sahlabad, Qal'eh ‒ Midrasian left-back Miquees Crespi has apologised for his celebration during Midrasia's group stage clash with Veleaz after fans of players of Midrasia's opponents took offence at the defender's gestures. After Crespi scored Midrasia's opening goal of the game, the Midrasian celebrated by using his trademark 'finger gun' celebration which he used throughout his time playing for AC Lotric. However, the left-back was carded for his actions which led many Veleazan players and fans to shout abuse at the player. In the aftermath of the game, the Veleazan football federation called for the FFA and FMF to take action against Crespi, issuing a "sufficient punishment". Whilst Crespi has issued an apology for his actions which he stated were "deeply regrettable and ill-judged", many are still calling for greater punishment to be handed out to the player.

Whilst the defender was yellow carded for his celebration during the game, prompting confusion from Crespi, it soon became clear why he was punished. Veleazan fans and players were outraged at Crespi actions which they later stated evoked imagery from Midrasia's recent war with Veleaz, along with the gunning down of Veleazan civilians by the Red Army on the Appian Wall. Speaking on the matter in the press conference, Crespi stated: "I wish to personally apologise for my actions during the match against Veleaz. I was not thinking at the time and made a deeply regrettable and ill-judged decision to celebrate in the way I did. I did not think about the images that my celebration conjured and wish to extend my sincere apologies to the Veleazan team, fans, and any other group that took offense."

Meanwhile, Midrasia were able to pull off a spectacular victory against Vidoria in a close fought semi-final clash. The game which finished 4-3 and was sealed by a late Qualquart penalty now sees Midrasia head to Kyderabad to face Goulong.

The game started very well for Midrasia as Qualquart opened with a brace within the first 6 minutes, a move that probably wasnt surprising to those that watched the Vidorian defensive display against Fahran. The first half ended 2-0 to Midrasia, with the stripes dominating much of the first 45. This didnt mean that the Vidorians posed no threat. A penalty awarded to Vidoria in 21st minute looked set to lift the opposition's spirits, but it was brushed away by keeper Thierry Florient, seemingly crushing their spirits. Furthermore a Mahdavi goal was disallowed for offside further dampening the spirit of the Vidorian players and fans.

However, all was not lost for the Rennekkan team, in spite of a goal from Lazaré. Goals from Sanchez and del Monte levelled the score, bringing panic to the eyes of the Midrasians. Nevertheless, Vidorian striker Mahdavi seemed to go missing for the remainder of the half, incapable of replicating his amazing form from the Fahrani game. With the score level nearing the 90th minute and Vidoria looking to push the game to extra time through a defensive formation, Gonzalez brought down Qualquart in the box in the 87th minute. The Vidorian was awarded with a second yellow, whilst Qualquart earned a chance to win the game. The winger obliged, burying the ball in the back of the net to send Midrasia into the semi finals to face Goulong.

MIDRASIA 4 - 0 GOULONG
(53') Meridon
(60') Albret
(82') Lazare
(90+1') Qualquart

Buyaqoli Stadium, Kyderabad
20:30 kick-off

FIRST HALF
0': We're underway in Kyderabad!
8': A cross from Li is met by Lee who heads wide, Goulong looking strong off the start.
14': Midrasia are playing attacking, seems as if Clar wants to get an early lead for the team to fall back on. Goulong certainly looking dangerous, though - seemingly playing better than their previous matches.
18': And a chance for Goulong has finally arrived, a free kick from 29 yards as Chan is brought down by Desmarais. The captain steps up to take it and...it's parried wide by Florient, a great save!
20': It's replicated on the other end too! Lazare is denied by an acrobatic save from Hung Sze Chan to tip it over the bar for a Midrasian corner!
21': The corner is sent in by Chevalier...but it's plucked out of the air by the Goulongese keeper. The threat has been stopped for now.
25': Nieue is shown a yellow for a poor challenge on Li in the middle of the park.
29': Joulles goes for glory as the ball rolls to him from 30 yards, but ends up hitting a home run.
33': Li Weihao goes for goal but ends up curling it just wide of the post. A surprisingly even game so far.
36': Qualquart hits the bar! The frustration on his face is visible! Midrasia are so close to breaking through, but can't get that little extra momentum they need. Clar will surely address this at the half.
42': Goulong going defensive temporarily to try and hold out until the half.
45': Two minutes added time.
45+2': HALF TIME

SECOND HALF
45': Back underway in Kyderabad!
53': Goal! Meridon strikes first for Midrasia as he heads home a Qualquart cross! 1-0!
60': And Albret adds to the scoreline as he dribbles past Cheung and slots it into the bottom corner! Clar's halftime talk must have done wonders!
65': Lee hits wide from a shot outside the box.
76': Qualquart misses a free kick from 30 yards.
82': Lazare adds to the scoreline with a 15 yard strike!
90': One minute added time.
90+1': Qualquart rounds off a superb Midrasian performance with a goal of his own!
90+1': FULL TIME

MIDRASIA SURGE THROUGH SEMI FINALS: WILL FACE CRYLANTE
Image
The team celebrate their fourth goal against Goulong

Kyderabad, Qal'eh ‒ Midrasia have advanced to the final of the 2019 Copa d'Aeia after an emphatic 4-0 victory over the so-called "undefeatables" yesterday. Despite a slow start to the game, the stripes came out all-round blazing in the second half, winning in style. Midrasia will now face Crylante in the tournament final.

Midrasia faced a tough battle going into their clash against a Goulong which had thus fad won every game in the tournament. Despite defeating Vidoria with a last minute winner, Midrasia definitely couldn't afford to take it easy going into their semi final game. The "undefeatables" had tallied up a considerable number of goals within their previous group stage matches, however they had failed to score more than one goal in both of their knockout games, only defeating Aleia on penalties, and Liiduria by a 76th minute goal by Sun. This was a fact likely to gove Midrasia hope going into the game, having scored 19 goals and conceding 8 throughout the tournament.

The match got off to a slow start as night settled over Kyderabad. The near 75,000 fans that packed the
Buyaqoli Stadium both equally nervous and energised. Goulong looked the better team from the off, with Lee heading wide in the 8th minute. But the Stripes quickly responded with their fast paced attacks. Two free kicks on either side failed to break the deadlock with Qualquart also hitting the bar. Goulong managed to dig in for the remainder of the half with the score standing at 0-0 and all still to play for.

As the second half got underway Midrasia looked to immediately hit the gas. This approach seemed to take Goulong by surprise as Alexis Meridon headed home from a Qualquart cross. Seven minutes later Jerome Albret scored his first goal in what has been a rather quiet tournament for the young winger. Goulong were not without threat though as Lee looked dangerous, but a 65th minute wide shot proved the strikers best effort. By the 82nd minute Lazaré had made it 3, whilst Qualquart once again struck late to make it 4; planting the cherry on top of a stellar performance. The complete rout proved that the "undefeatables" nickname proved to be greatly exaggerated, but Midrasia would be wise to not let this victory go to their heads.

With the stripes now through to the final, attention will now turn to their opponents: Crylante. The Stars are known to have a youthful hard-working team, especially among their striking departments. Forwards Jonsson, de Ouserad, and Andersen have an average age of just 21 years old and are all big up and coming talents. The Midrasian defence, which has been prone to the odd mistake will need to make sure that they maintain their discipline and strength for the full 90 and beyond if necessary. However Crylante's main emphasis has been on their defence which has succeeded in completely shutting out teams on a number of occasions. Nevertheless, the high-pressing attacking Vidorian side was able to win 4-2 against the Stars during the group stages which should give Midrasia some hope of emulating this victory.

However, memories of the 2-1 defeat to Crylante during the 2017 tournament will likely linger on the minds of the tifosi. After such a close game against Navack in the quarter finals which ended 5-4 in extra time, losing to Crylante was a serious blow to the resolve of the Stripes. But the current team will be out for revenge, both against Crylante and to make up for last year's defeat to Navack. Only one game stands between Midrasia and Copa glory. Now the whole team, all staff, and the fans will have to put all their effort into getting a victory. We here at Démarrer wish Midrasia the best of luck.

FIRST HALF
0': Underway here at the Copa d'Aeia final at the beautiful Buyaqoli Stadium in Kyderabad! 75,000 people this stadium houses, Omid, a perfect setting for a grand Copa final.
2': Olsen looks shaky at the back of the Crylantian back four having been inserted into the squad over Ilola, who replaced Hermansen in the semi-final against the Mardin Isles - Qualquart seemingly having his way with the young centreback.
7': Satorras sends in a cross as he sprints down the left side, barely shaking off Crylantian left-back Fransje Boule, it's met by Albret who attempts to find his second goal of the tournament, but it is no challenge for Kurtemansje.
13': de Ouserad brings the ball down nicely off of a through ball from Hintikka, he composes himself and...scores! He sprints over to the corner flag only to be met with the official's arm raised as he is flagged for offside.
16': A corner for Midrasia as Crespi composes himself to deliver the cross. It's nicely struck as it flies into the box and is met by Desmarais who heads it into the near post! The 26-year-old puts Midrasia ahead early! What a start for the Reds!
20': Lazaré and Qualquart link up with a quick one-two play to snake around the Crylantian defense, but Kurtemansje is off his line quickly to bring the ball into his hands before he can get off a shot.
23': A man sprints onto the pitch bearing the flag of Ostry with "Independent Ostry!" written across it. He is quickly seized by security and escorted out of the stadium.
25': It's all Midrasia as Qualquart barely misses the bottom-right-hand corner from a beautifully curled shot that had Kurtemansje fully beaten. Crylante need to change - and fast!
32': Crylante finally get a chance as de Ouserad breaks free from Nieué just outside the 16 yard box, but his shot is sent wide under pressure from the Midrasian goalkeeper.
39': Albret and Jonsson have a tussle that results in the referee and the teammates having to intervene. No bookings are issued, though.
42': Chevalier tries an optimistic shot from 30 yards that ricochets off the back of Olsen and falls at Jonsson's feet, who begins the Crylantian counter-attack!
43': But superb pace and precision from Crespi as he puts in a sublime tackle to stop the attack before it becomes dangerous.
45': Three minutes of added time!
45+3': HALF TIME

SECOND HALF
45': Back underway at the Buyaqoli!
52': Jonsson strikes a free kick with his laces from 31 yards out, it rises well, but rises too high, and ends up in the stands - Crylante's first real chance in a while.
59': Qualquart with a nice through ball to Lazaré who fakes out Olsen, sets himself for the shot - and hits the post! So unlucky for the current top goalscorer. Midrasia looking deadly once again.
61': de Ouserad tries an ambitious shot from outside the box that goes high and wide.
67': Qualquart picks up the ball from the half, he begins sprinting towards the goal. He outpaces Laine, Olsen is the last line of defense as Heikkinen misses his tackle! Qualquart with a fake shot to lose Olsen...and he chips the keeper! You couldn't write this stuff! What a fabulous solo goal from the Midrasian star! 2-0!
74': Dalsgaard is shown yellow for a poor challenge on Satorras.
76': de Lenare replaces Satorras for Midrasia.
77': Jonsson hits a shot well from 16 yards that is deflected out for a corner off the shin of Crespi.
78': Dalsgaard puts in the cross, Andersen heads! But it's saved well by Florient who has no trouble gathering himself afterwards.
80': Erikkson replaces Andersen as Crylante shift to a 4-2-3-1 formation.
85': Crylante switch to an all-out attacking formation in a last ditch hope - while Midrasia switch to a defensive one. Qualquart is practically playing in midfield! Meanwhile Crozier replaces Albret in midfield.
87': Jonsson nearly scores a late goal for Crylante but his shot is parried away by Florient and lands at Crespi's feet.
90': One minute of added time!
90+1': And it's over! Clar runs onto the pitch to celebrate with the team! Midrasia are your 2019 Copa d'Aeia champions, ladies and gentlemen! Their 5th title, and their first since 2014! They eclipse their long-time rivals in Navack after they had just levelled it up! A very well-deserved trophy, I must say.
