"No, for the millionth time, no!"

Edwin Nash fought his first instinct to slam his mobile phone on the ground in the hotel room he shared with former reserve beater SaQuon Douglas. The otherwise Luddite had a mobile phone for reasons that harkened back to teenage years, but the team's public relations person had given Nash's mobile phone number to multiple media outlets and they were trying to get in contact with him to get his version of the events that led to Ken Flanagan's dismissal from the team.

He settled for placing the phone on the nightstand next to his bed. The sound of the room's shower shut off after Nash put the phone down. Douglas walked out into the room with a towel wrapped around his waist. Nash knew that was unusual for the normally extremely modest Douglas. He usually carried his clothes into the bathroom and got dressed in the room after finishing his shower. Nash also knew Douglas was very self-conscious about people seeing him in any stage of undress. Nash, and most of the team, thought he had no reason for it. He was chiseled and looked like he could have easily walked off a runway, and Nash noticed the eight-pack Douglas boasted with more than a little envy.

"What's wrong, Ed? Media again?"

"Yes, SaQuon. They keep calling looking for me to comment about Ken. I don't know why they're making such a big fucking deal about it."

Douglas gave him a quizzical look. Even though the two players didn't know each other all that long, Nash knew what that look meant. He found in the scant few days that they were roommates (after Flanagan's departure, Douglas was moved from a room with two other players into Nash's room) that Douglas seemed to know exactly what Nash was thinking before he said it.

You know why it's such a bid deal, Ed. You know why people are talking.

Many Sarzonians didn't have a whole lot of experience with people who considered themselves gender non-conforming. However, many of them grew up around people of various expressions of gender and sexuality, so someone not fitting "the norm" wasn't that big a deal. The fact that someone who was potentially a high-profile player, even for a sport that was little more than a curiosity, would have a problem with it, and would so blatantly flaunt his bigotry was a big deal.

For Nash, he simply did what he'd always done: Stand up for a teammate and speak out when he felt someone was in the wrong. He hadn't known Elynn very long and raised an eyebrow when he saw them wear a dress for the first time, but he thought the dress looked good on them. He remembered an incident four years ago when he got in the face of a much bigger man who was spouting off Islamophobic bullshit. He'd had to suppress his first instinct, which was concern that he'd get his ass beaten, only to find that the Islamophobe quickly backed down as if he were worried Nash would beat HIS ass. The fact that a locker room incident went from being the stuff that gets dealt with and resolved behind closed doors to one that got national attention was one other thing that bothered Nash.

As for Flanagan, Nash knew that he wouldn't escape the attention even in neighbouring Delaclava. He knew the Delaclavs would be even more merciless toward Flanagan. They readily accepted a Sarzonian footballer who was a hermaphrodite, and they had no problems with anyone who was gender non-conforming. It was clearly not anything that would have bothered them.

Nash's mobile vibrated once again. He rolled his eyes and saw the number on the ID. His eyes narrowed, then he slowly picked the phone up.

"Hello?"

"Traci! Hi!" Traci Laughton was a society columnist for a small, local paper in a Nicksia suburb, but was also a very longtime friend of Nash's. Their families grew up together on the same street, and their families frequently hosted each other for dinners and they often traveled together on holidays.

They spent a few minutes catching up since the last time the two of them spoke in person two weeks ago, just before the flight took the team to the city where they would play their first fixture against Starblaydia.

"Ed, I know this isn't a subject you want to talk about, but I have to because my editors are asking me," Traci said.

Nash cut in.

"I'll talk to you about it," he said. "No one else."

Nash then went into detail about what happened, how Ken Flanagan started verbally assaulting Elynn Davish about their changing from the team uniform into a dress. About his instinct to confront Flanagan, about the fight that broke out, and about Chris Entwistle's decision to boot Flanagan from the team.

Finally, one media outlet in Sarzonia would get the full picture directly from Edwin Nash.

In Fennex the National Quidditch Team is celebrating their last day in Pius Desurongcrandis before they leave for the World Cup. While flying in the Capital City Pitch they reveal new uniforms for the Quidditch World Cup. The uniform still have the same black cloak and Red trimming but they revealed a new Team Pius Desurongcrandis Quidditch Logo where it has a Phoenix holding two broom sticks that are crossed and under that is a snitch, this is located on the right side. The left side has the 9th Quidditch World Cup logo. All the Lettering and logos besides the 9th Quidditch World Cup logo are in Gold. The Black Pants now sport a golden striped out lined in red on either side.

Mutiara Porterminal, Empire of Amenria
8 May, 2047

The Seoul N-Forcers walked towards a portal set to send them to the Free Republics. Soldiers lined up on both sides to them, saluting the team as they walked by. Behind the line of soldiers were the team's supporters, cheering them on and saying their goodbyes as if they were astronauts going to another planet. This was the first time commoners laid eyes on the team's uniform, modified from the usual tactical gear law enforcement soldiers wear to be lighter, yet less protective. It should be enough, as this isn't a combat mission, but a sport. The N-Forcers' coats fluttered in the air as they neared the glowing, spiraling, deep blue portal. As the light began to look brighter and brighter, they closed their eyes and went through. With one step, they were out of the universe and crossed over to another one, where the tournament awaits.

After finishing third at the eighth installment of the Quidditch World Cup, Zwangzug's team returns in the hopes of improving upon that performance. Previous captain Gretchen Kohl-Muenler, as well as Mauno Forrest-Alston, have retired from international play. In their place come Rochelle Whitesun, a proficient duellist and Chaser, and Timothy Frost-Hordal, a pious but gruff Beater. Several sorcerers were stunned (not literally) by the announcement that Enzo Bartali was named captain after leading the Giordano Gheppi to the QUIZ title; though he is undoubtedly a talented individual, his lack of chemistry with international teammates was a concern last cycle.

Matthias Vanderwaal, around the posts, is still probably the side's key player. If his head is in the game, his Padix Porlocks are very hard to overcome; if he's distracted by the Malifornia Redwoods...well, who knows. Seeker Bita Sarhaddi really shouldn't be distracted by the redwoods, since she's seen plenty of trees in the Namiri region.

Jeong "Jason" Jaesun of the Amrenia N-Forcers is sure to delight Zwangzug fans with his baseball skills, while Banija--second-place to The Sherpa Empire last time around--are considered threats to take Group C after the unseeded draw.

Edwin Nash hadn't even set his sport bag down on the bench in front of his locker when he heard a bellow from Chris Entwistle's office.

"NASH! Get in here NOW!"

Nash grimaced, then walked up to the door to his coach's office. He saw the coach glaring at him, brandishing a newspaper.

"Shut the door behind you," the coach and former teammate of Nash's snapped as he crossed the threshold into the office.

Once the door was closed, Entwistle motioned with his right hand for Nash to sit across from him. The coach then inhaled slowly and exhaled.

"Ed, how many times do I have to make clear that we don't air dirty laundry from our dressing room in public?" Chris asked. "Especially with a name on it," he added, even though an anonymous source, no matter how deep on the roster it could be would still not have been OK with the coach.

"Coach, the fact that the media already know about the incident means I wasn't airing any dirty laundry," Nash said, returning his coach's scowl with one of his own. "That, and the fact that Kenny made a bigoted statement, I think that needed to be called out."

Entwistle leaned back in his chair, still angry with his starting keeper over going to the media with his version of events. For his part, Entwistle made it clear he would not address matters beyond simply telling the media Flanagan was off the team for a violation of team rules. He refused to answer questions about why Nash had a shiner after the fight with Edwards. But now he had to address this rule violation.

"Ed, you know I'm going to have to suspend you for the first match."

"Against Starblaydia, are you mad?"

"A team rule's a team rule."

"I'm appealing it to the players association."

"You're welcome to, Ed," Entwistle said. "And the suspension might even be overturned in time for our match against Starblaydia. But I can't let you violate a long-standing team rule and do nothing."

Within minutes of Entwistle's announcement that reserve keeper Angel Gonzalez would start and Nash would be suspended, Nash launched his appeal of the suspension. [OOC note if Star RP's first and decides on a starting keeper, I'll let him decide if the appeal comes through in time for Nash to start. Otherwise, I'll decide it when I do my RP.]

‭The game was over incredibly fast. Tshering and Dai looked set to dominate the quaffle play, scoring once each within the first couple of minutes, but Xantian snagged the snitch and brought the game to an early end before the Sherpas had really got going.

‭The Sherpas were not used to losing. After having an unexpectedly brilliant run in their first Quidditch World Cup, they were feeling a bit cocky and losing a game right out of the gates came as a nasty surprise, especially when the game was decided so quickly.

‭Wangdi and Nair took it especially hard. Wangdi was used to having everything the way he wanted, and Nair had gotten waaaaaayyyy ahead of himself dreaming of glory on the quidditch pitch, being popular enough to get a hot girlfriend, and finally getting other people to believe in his theory that the Duke of Delhi was his biological father.

‭Wangdi smashed his broom in a fit of rage, and blue sparks sprayed out of it when the wood cracked. Tshering regretted that he hadn't done anything to make the broom more durable than an ordinary one from the hardware store. Well, Wangdi could replace it himself... He was probably magically competent enough to make his own, and if he wasn't, he was rich enough to buy a proper quidditch broom from a professional broommaker.

‭"Xantian caught a lucky break spotting the snitch that early," Tshering said. "There's nothing we could have done."

‭Changjun Ihawa hadn't had much to do with the game being so short and Tshering and Dai keeping the Starblaydi chasers on the defensive. She was a little disappointed to be on the losing team, but she knew it was beyond her control. "That sucked," she said commented without much emotion as she walked off the pitch with her broom over her shoulder. She casually let her hair down and shook it out, completely oblivious to how gorgeous it was or how jealous it made Pasang Nair. Changjun had been dating Tshering for a while, and she was probably out of Nair's league anyway -- but watching her shake out her hair like that was like passing a delicious-smelling kabob cart when he was hungry and didn't have the money to buy any.

Right after the game against the Equestrian States

“You had one job!”, shouted Kraven and smashed his broom on the ground of their teams tent.
“Not that again”, Anora rolled her eyes.
“We were leading and you just had to catch the snitch but nooo… some flying minihorse gulps it in front of you!”
“Hey, I swear, the one dragon in the ranks tried to silently bewitch me. He blinked liked an idiot.”
“He was just flirting with you.”
“Ewww.”
“I find it more concerning that our medic helped the opponent seeker to not suffocate”, grumbled Skulldodgery.
“I was first on the scene and it was my chance to get experience with Pony anatomy. Fascinating. And the patient survived”, said Rink.
“You know that there are Ponies living in Kriegiersien?”
“I never was in the region were they live with the muggles.”
“Me neither.”

“The bigger problem is why we didn’t had more intel about our opponent. I thought you are a specialist concerning ponies?”, Tim asked Shao.
“I am. But they really sealed off this time. No chance to get information about their team, beforehand. Just had some talk with their captain after the match. At least for the next match against them, if there should be one, we know: They are not bad. But we are better and can beat them, if we catch the snitch.”

“Big news”, Kraven starred at Anora, she sticked out her tongue.
“Hey, I am an imp with a squeaky voice. And I always have to remember that my name is Ash Trix. I nearly gave a wrong autograph”, Anora replied.

“Yeah, yeah. More important: Who is our next opponent?”, asked Tim.
“Errr.. Shapoer”, Shao read from a parchment.
“And what do we know about them?”
“Nothing.”
Silence.
Shao looked up.
“I am sorry. This whole tournament came quickly, it was hard to gather any information. And especially the next opponents are rather no names. I will look into my crystal ball for Shapoers match against Nilrahrarfan..“
Adhan hit his back multiple times.
„..stop that.. I didn’t choke, that was the name of the nation. Shapoer didn‘t score once, so…. I think I shouldn’t have too much to do, you guys should score enough that we don‘t have to bother for the seeker to catch the snitch..“
„Yeah, yeah..“, muttered Anora, head-shaking.
“.. and then we win this.”
“So..”
Imoen suddenly entered arm in arm with a dragon.
“Hey people. I met an interesting guy, how about we go drink something together?”

Dear Eugene,

The forests here are beautiful! There's some political instability so we've been advised not to travel too far from the campsite but I don't see why you'd want to, there's a lot of touristy stuff to do. I met some guys from Velestria, they're wonderful artists and were here to sketch some of the local birds. They remind me of a few I saw visiting Mantoac one time. Didn't talk too much, though.

We're supposed to take the train around in a couple days. I met the Darmeni conductor and he seems really into astrology, which kinda weirds me out, but each to their own I guess.

"What are you doing?" Andrea interrupted.

"Writing a letter," Rochelle pointed out, unhelpfully. "Stupid quills make my hand hurt. Give me a keyboard any day."

"Who's--" Andrea glanced down. "Eugene?"

"My boyfriend, if you must know," Rochelle said promptly.

"Huh," said Andrea. Then she skimmed the letter. "You haven't told him anything about...the tournament?"

"No," Rochelle said, "I may be an adventurer, but I don't need to go breaking international wizarding law if I can help it."

Andrea took a second to parse that. "You're dating a no-maj?"

"For the moment. We'll see how he handles my schedule."

"And you haven't told him about Quidditch, magic, anything?"

"We're not very serious," said Rochelle. "It's just been a few months, the QUIZ was mostly off-season. He thinks I'm a minor league baseball player."

Andrea rolled her eyes. "Be careful."

"What, not going to make grand gestures and denounce the Statute of Secrecy?"

"No. Are you?"

"No. Not today, anyway. Got stomach cramps after the game and don't have the energy, maybe tomorrow."

"Well, you can always complain to your boyfriend about that."

"Yeah," said Rochelle, turning back to the letter. "He's supportive, even if a bit clueless."

RP Rules: No deaths. This being quidditch, be as stupid as you like. Any non-fatal injuries can probably be fixed in a day anyway.

Magic in Sajnur is neither explicitly canon nor explicitly non-canon until further notice.

Sajnur's Magical Community

Sajnur is home to three magical communities, one in the mountainous Kalavar province, one in the plains of the Western province, and one in the deserts and savannah of Mersuq province. The Kalavar community has interacted with the Sajnuran state and its predecessors for millenia and is comfortable with non magical Sajnurans knowing of their existence and even the occasional tourist, and the Western Sajnuran community is similarly open to interaction with non-magical people with a centuries long history of such, but the Mersuq community has only recently been absorbed into Sajnur and while it is also not opposed to outside knowledge of their existence, travel into magical communities in Mersuq is restricted to those of magical ethnicity and their families, and Sajnuran government officials. Witches and wizards are referred to in the Dorava language as Nerar.

Magic in Sajnur is more similar to Skullduggery Pleasant than it is to Harry Potter, although this isn't a hard and fast rule. Wandless magic is frequent, with wands used more to amplify and/or store power, and as such are not required most of the time, although wanded magic is often more powerful and with a certain quickness that barehand magic doesn't have. Manipulation of the four elements is a common aspect of Sajnuran magic, with fire and water displays a common tool of many a Nerar. Of course, many practitioners do prefer spell based magic to element based magic, and unlike in Skullduggery Pleasant, earth magic is not exclusively a last resort, although it is very draining nonetheless. Another common feature of magic is simple telekinesis, with the most powerful Nerar capable of lifting cars barehand, or regional jets wanded.

Kalavar province is home to approximately 67,000 Nerar in its high mountains, the closest being about 300km from the provincial capital of Tesje. Most will speak Dorava to communicate with outsiders, but the magical communities also have their own languages, invariably spoken by no one outside those communities. The magical communities are nowadays somewhat of a tourist attraction for anyone who is willing to made the arduous journey into the isolated mountains and valleys. None of the communities are connected to Sajnur's main road network and are only accessible by aircraft or on foot. Despite this, and the fact that Kalavar magic tourism is very expensive, several thousand people visit the Nerar of Kalavar each year, providing useful additional income to a largely rural region that is reliant on agriculture. It was from Kalavar that the sport of quidditch was introduced to the rest of Sajnur, with the mountains and valleys being quite amenable to flying broom sports and the highest Nerar town being more than 5000m above sea level. Given that most Sajnurans cannot fly without machinery, quidditch among non-Nerar is often played on go karts or, for the more daring, in small open top aircraft. It is widely speculated that the Greens MP for the constituency that contains Kalavar's Nerar is herself Nerari.

Western Sajnur is home to 79,000 Nerar, with 53,000 in the town of Abarga on the far west coast. Unlike the small Kalavar Nerar towns, Abarga is connected to Foaspra, the provincial capital, by a long road along the Western Sajnur coast. Also unlike Kalavar, Western Sajnur is largely flat, and the magical ball sport that developed here was characterstic of the flat terrain, there being no snitch, more players on the field, and more tackling. Abarga is a port town, too, and much of what gets in and out of the northern half of Western Sajnur comes through Abarga. Of course, the Sajnuran government has made sure that visitors to the port are largely oblivious to the magic present in the town through a combination of regulations on the use of magic and enough technology that the port can run comfortably with limited use of magic. Tourism to Abarga is at a smaller scale compared to the Kalavar towns, but is still present. The Western Nerar generally speak Dorava, Tauqatan, and/or Sjemjori.

Mersuq is home to approximately 32,000 Nerar. The Mersuq Nerar do not speak Dorava, instead speaking their local languages along with Alonic, the lingua franca, and they call themselves the Laqima. Like most of the desert communities outside of the capital of Talkho or the interior town of Kidhra, the Laqima communities are nomadic, but they have the advantage of using their magic to find optimal places to support themselves and their livestock. As they are in the desert, they are inaccesible by any means other than four wheel drive or camel, and these must be launched from Kidhra with several days of supplies. Even Kidhra itself is not connected to the road network as the roads do not extend more than 100km from the Mersuq coast, so the four wheel drives must either be rented out or flown from Talkho. The Laqima are hostile to outsiders, partly out of the fear shared by many magic communities of being found out, but mainly as a legacy of the persecution they faced by the governments which controlled Mersuq before the Millenium Wars and Sajnur's takeover of Alonia, persecution which increased to life threatening levels in the months before the invasion of the Mersuq region. Indeed, it is speculated by many that Sajnur only pushed south into the region because of the existence of the Laqima and Sajnur's desire to control knowledge of magical comminuties in the regions surrounding the country. The Laqima were introduced to quidditch only after the takeover of Mersuq by the Kalavar Nerar, and no indigenous ballsport existed prior thanks to the harsh desert climate. Tourism to Laqima communities is non-existent.

Klaus carefully rubbed the polishing cloth over the last bit of the handle that he hadn't finished it, gently applying the specially made polish. He rubbed the frontal end of the handle with the cloth until he the polish had been evenly spread and then he set the broom gently on-top of his bed and retrieved the long, dark colored carrying bag from a corner of his room and slid it over the broom, putting his supplies inside afterwards and then cinching the end shut with the attached drawstring. He set the bag back down on the bed and slipped on his brown boots, quickly lacing them up so he could leave shortly but his attention was diverted when he heard the sound of footsteps coming from down the hallway, and by the time he looked up he caught his mother slightly opening the door to his bedroom, leaning against the frame and looking at him with a small smile, and a look of worry in her ocean blue eyes.

Klaus finished tying his boots and stood up and opened the door more fully, embracing his mother in a long hug. "Why the worry mom?"

"I'm just concerned dear, I didn't send you to school for a reason and I know I've been pushing you to make some friends, but this isn't quite what I had in mind. I was hoping you'd befriend Leonard or Meghan down the street, not join the national quidditch team."

Klaus pulled back from the hug and smiled at her "Come on mom, it's just a sport, I'll be fine. I'm not even starting, I'm a substitute for the time being."

"That's not what I'm worried about and you know it; nothing but ódheas on that team."

Klaus rolled his eyes "I thought you liked Randolph mom, you used to let me play with him all the time; besides there's another one of us, Iris Hale she's the other starting Beater."

"I liked Randolph when it was you and a few of the other town kids playing it in the fields, not an organized team of strangers; and I don't know the Hales."

Klaus retrieved his bag and slung it over his shoulder, the strap allowing the bag to hang against the back of his right arm. He gave his mother the biggest smile he could manage and gave her one last hug before he moved to walk down the stairs of their home, and the front door, his mother following behind him. "I'll be careful mom, the Cup only lasts a few weeks and then I'll be right back here with you."

"You better come back the same way you left Klaus. Before you go, here, I have something for you."

She ran over to a small table they had up against the wall near their door, usually just used for storing keys or other unsorted items, and pulled something out of the small drawer it had and then returned to Klaus, who was waiting in the doorway, pressing something into his hand. Klaus looked at it; it was a blade, shorter then five inches that was very wide at the base and got more narrow till you reached the point and the handle was some kind of wood that was fully carved in a series of symbols and runes that weren't unfamiliar, but long unseen, to Klaus. He smiled and took the knife and slid it into the back of his waistband. His mother smiled "It's for your protection. Don't be afraid to call on me or your Uncle either, we'll be here if you need help with something."

Klaus smiled and blew her a kiss before walking out of the door and then over their front lawn and onto the simple, two lane road that their house sat off of. The road ran east-west, if you followed it east it would connect to the larger four-lane B56, or locally known as Arthursson Road, which would lead you into the center of Ashney, but if you were going west as Klaus was, you would cut through the entire North Forest neighborhood until eventually the road just terminated; Klaus knew that and walked for about a mile to this termination spot, the end of the road blocked all with a large sign that declared it as such and a metal bumper, behind it a large degree of brush. Klaus climbed over the bumper and into the wooded area, taking a deep breath and enjoying the morning smell of the forest and walked for a few more moments before the brambles and thick forest gave way to a grove; not particularly large, the clearing of the forest floor was less then six feet in diameter, however what was remarkable was that it was ringed with very specific trees, oak, holly, ash and thorn and the trunks of the trees were covered in carvings. He walked into the center of the grove, a slight nervousness creeping into him as he reached into his memory for a series of words he hadn't used in a long time. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a cluster of three holy branches, no longer then three inches, that were tied together. Holding them in his left hand, he began speaking the words he had remembered and within a few moments of him beginning the ritual, he noticed that the reflection of the sun on the wet grass began to grow, until it got to the point that it blocked out his sight entirely, his vision filled with nothing but light.

After what seemed like a very long set of minutes, the light slowly faded and Klaus blinked his eyes rapidly trying to adjust his eyes and his vision was slowly returning, revealing that he was standing in a large grass field, just a few feet from a large forest's edge. He felt something strange in his left hand and looked down to see where the small sticks had been there was nothing but ash now, falling from his hand. He un-clenched his fist, letting the ash fall back onto the earth and brushed his hands off on his dark grey pants and began walking towards the forest's edge. As he grew closer, he heard a sharp whistle and saw a figure, no a woman, walking towards him from his left, only a few feet away. As she got closer, he could see she was wearing the muted blue team robes, and that her natural hazel colored hair was free-flowing over her shoulders. When she got within conversation range, she waved and gre closer to Klaus, offering him a handshake "I'm Iris Hale, you're Klaus McEwan right?"

Klaus returned her smile with a smaller one of his own and returned the handshake "Yes I am, nice to meet you. How'd you know I'd be out here?"

"Randolph told me a little bit about you and I figured you'd try to use the groves to get here; but this place always spits you out here if you do so, quite interesting. I'm happy to see another Northener on the team, well, one that still keeps the faith unlike the brutes like Gunnar."

Klaus smiled "He's an interesting fellow, doesn't seem to like our kind very much."

Iris rolled her eyes slightly "I take it you didn't go to a school with any of them; pretty much all of them are somewhere between people like him, or Randolph. Landon doesn't care just so you know, and she doesn't tolerate any tension between us; she had to separate Gunnar and me alot during our first season but I've gotten used to him and I think he's warmed up to me as well. Anyways, team practice begins shortly, shall I show you to the locker room so you can get changed and such?"

Klaus waved her on "After you."

When the Sarzonian national quidditch team takes to the pitch in their opening match against Starblaydia, they will ride out with keeper Edwin Nash leading the way.

As much as the team will have its game faces on in full effect and look like nothing happened, everyone to a person will know how far from the truth appearances would be.

Barely after manager Chris Entwistle got the words out that he was suspending Nash for the opener, the rest of the team began to protest. The shouting soon overwhelmed the former Sarzonian player who was now a manager, and it wasn't long before Elynn Davis confronted Entwistle with a short, stern warning.

"Coach," they said, "you're going to lose the room if you push this."

Entwistle was no dummy. He was in a dressing room as a player, as an assistant manager, and now as a manager. He knew the stakes full well. He knew that, once lost, a dressing room was almost never won back. He knew that the term "lose the room," or the older "lose the locker room," meant that the players would only show as much devotion to their tasks as they could muster for themselves or their teammates. Their coach's words would ring hollow no matter what those words included.

"I had to weigh that," Entwistle said as he was on his mobile phone with his boss, Alec Tanguay, the technical director of Sarzonian Quidditch, explaining what Davis said to him about losing the dressing room. "And I did, thoroughly. But I had to suspend Nash for those comments. I said at the very beginning of the first day of training that any such comments to the media without going through the team was subject to suspension for a full match."

Even the opener. Even the fixture against hated Starblaydia. Even for the one player who'd previously competed in the third and fourth Quidditch World Cups. Rules were rules, and Edwin Nash broke the big one.

"I know the position you're in," Tanguay said. "That's why I'm in the position to listen to appeals and why I have the unfortunate task of having to make a decision on whether or not to overturn a suspension." Entwistle knew by now where this was going.

"It's why I have to make this decision to overturn the suspension. Whether you play Ed is up to you, but he will not be suspended by Sarzonian Quidditch. Besides, Chris," Tanguay said, "you can always spin it as you following the rules and me being the heavy overriding it."

He made the decision for the good of the team, Entwistle knew that's how he'd have to present it. He still had the option of starting Angel Gonzalez, but he could now bring in Nash at the first substitution opportunity, or he could start Nash. Tanguway wouldn't give a directive forcing him to start Nash in the match, but with the weight of the suspension now off based on a decision by his superior, he would send Nash out between the pipes. He knew the conversation with the players wouldn't be easy. Tommy already threatened to beat up his older brother over the decision, and the fact that it wasn't a change of heart by his older brother still wouldn't sit well with the starting seeker.

Perhaps anyone who knows the Sarzonians well would detect the smouldering anger behind the normal looks of determination on their faces. It was hard to tell. Right now, their first match was on hand and they were facing a team that was already second in the table after a relatively underwhelming 150-20 victory over The Sherpa Empire. Pius Desurongcrandis walloped the Stars' next opponents Bisim 640-260 in the other match.

Whether the Stars would focus well enough against their heated rivals would be anyone's guess.

One thing many observers forgot about in the wake of the controversy featuring former beater Ken Flanagan and gender non-conforming fellow beater Elynn Davis when the Sarzonian national quidditch team took to the pitch against Starblaydia was a basic issue that could befall any nation that normally does not engage in the magical arts.

How to get those damn brooms up in the air, let alone to maneuver them in a way befitting your average quidditch side.

Some time after Delaclava and Sarzonia both went into years of isolation, manager Chris Entwistle, who paced the sidelines more than usual learned the truth about the reason his team suddenly went from not being able to get airborne to suddenly being on the cusp of a shock undefeated trip to the final. It was a reason that might have caught most competitors by surprise, but was a surprise to no Sarzonian.

The Delaclav wizards were using their magic powers to lift the Sarzonians up.

We don't have that luxury now, Entwistle thought, looking ruefully at his team milling about with their brooms. Even the Sarzonian-built brooms weren't necessarily magical, so it was going to be anyone's guess how Sarzonia would actually get their brooms to fly.

That was, until Entwistle saw a mysterious figure lurking near the exit toward the Sarzonian dressing room. The robes looked like they were typical of a wizard's, but Entwistle had no idea why a wizard would mill about so close to his team's dressing room door. Then he saw a flag pin that had a rainbow colour scheme and smiled slightly. Somehow, he knew he'd have nothing to worry about.

Once the official signaled it was time to get started, the Sarzonians lifted into the air as if there were no questions at all about their magic abilities, and then the match was under way.

Elynn Davis began acquitting themself well against their Starblaydi opponents, while SaQuon Douglas was helping keep the lanes in front of Edwin Nash as clear as possible. Sarzonia took a rather comfortable 220-140 lead over Starblaydia, although Starblaydi seeker Xantian made a dangerous run at the snitch that Davis was having trouble defending against. It took a fortunate bump that the referee mistook for a foul against Xantian to prevent the purple-clad No. 7 cloak from capturing the snitch.

"I can't believe it!" Starblaydi team captain and keeper Enrique Esposito screamed out.

Neither can I, Entwistle muttered to himself as he turned to look toward Douglas. He didn't even see his baby brother Tommy decide to make a daring run at the snitch, so his back was turned when the young Sarzonian made the capture.

"That's the match!" the referee called out. "Sarzonia win 370-140."

"Wait, what?" Chris Entwistle said with a look of confusion.

"Coach, look!" reserve beater Matt Spencer shouted, pointing up at the video replay showing Tommy's daring run. A run Chris would have discouraged his baby brother from attempting, but the fact that his team cradled the victory the way Tommy Entwistle cradled the captured snitch was all Chris would need.

A day that began with tension between the players and their manager that threatened to rip the team apart gave them some new-found unity. They had a victory. More than that, they had a victory over Starblaydia. They were now level on points with Pius Desurongcrandis, who were idle, and with The Sherpa Empire, which crushed Bisim to drop that side to 0-0-2. Sarzonia were now two points clear of Starblaydia.

Somewhere in Woodstock, even Ken Flanagan smiled at that result, even as he was in the neighbouring law office preparing a lawsuit against Chris Entwistle and his former team.

The men and women in Purple Robes got the first matchday of the 9th Quidditch World Cup and it gave the team a much needed day to watch their opponents get their tournament off to a start. They watched their matchday 2 opponents Velestria defeat Zwangzug 190-70, and Darmen take a much higher scoring affair with Banija 340-250. The Darmen side a familiar opponent as the loss to them knocked the Purple Knights flying squad out of the last World Cup on the final matchday of the group. The opening off day gave the Knights a chance to scout their opponents, but with the early snitch catch in the Velestria game their wasn't much to figure out beyond the seeker for the Purple Knights, Ollivander Williams, would have to be quick with his draw.

Williams would heed that warning as he rather quickly found the snitch in the bright matchday 2 air, and was found in an early battle to seek it. But while that was happening Chaser Albert Hancock scored his first goal as a national teamer, and Samantha Van Dyke would as well. Less impressive was the performance from new Keeper Dakota Lyle who would have had a shut out if not for looking rather confounded on two early goals. Lucky for him his national team debut was cut short thanks to an impressive snitch catch from Ollivander Williams that had the matchday 2 match festivities cut off at only a half hour into play. The Knights fans were surely happy to have won, and they rather likely wanted to get some more action, and some more goals before the win.

Anora observed the playing field, looking for the snitch. No opponent beater was able to look for her, all just trying to prevent a higher loss for Shapoer. She could roam around unchallenged.
Then the snitch arrived just a few feet under the opponents seeker, she was still over ten meters above her adversary. She hated the chance in this game. With a roar she swung her broom around and dashed down. The air started to catch fire, her breath was gone immediately, she lost a clear sight of her surroundings.
But only a heartbeat later she was beside the seeker from Shapoer, smashing him to the ground thanks to the crosswind, grabbing the snitch at one of its wings and then embracing it with both hands while tumbling down to the ground herself.

“50 Points!”, Anora howled, raising her cup in a tavern.
“They made 50 Points against you!”
“We would have still won, even if they had gotten the snitch at this point”, said Shao.
“You said they would make none!”
“No, I didn’t and that is no reason to nearly break your neck.”
“I didn’t, we won clearly, we got the extra points. Worth it.”
“We have only one seeker, we can’t afford to lose you.”
“Aw, how sweet. But we have a great medic who fully repaired me in no time.”
She did a fist bump with Rink who was reading a book at the same time and only grimaced a bit in pain because of her shoulder.

“That was an easy victory ..”, started Shao.
“50 Points!”, yelled Anora.
“Shut up… but now we face a really important match. Ko-oren could be a really decisive match for making it out of the group. We need better tactics this time.”

“Nah, tactic smacktic. I have an idea”, Imoen arrived, turned around a chair and sat down.
“Not some heist again”, groaned Tim.
“Better. Seekers can be really important in such close matches, so if the seeker of Ko-oren had a bad day….”
“They have two seekers, in difference to us.”
“Yeah, but I am pretty sure which one of them is playing against us. And if he would be able to play, feel good, but then become a bit dizzy in the match...”
“Do you want to poison him?”
“No, no.. don’t be … wait, yeah, kind of.”
“That is not really fair...”, remarked Kraven.
“I like the idea”, said Skulldodgery.
“Why don’t we just poison everyone then?”
“Naah, much to complicated and suspicious. No, it has to be the right dose. And we have an expert for that.”
Rink looked up from his book.
“I am a healer, not a damagedealer.”
“You are not damaging them. Just slowing down.”
Rink shook his head and continued reading.
“I can’t help you.”
Imoen pushed her chair closer.
“If I needed something to calm my nerves down and to be able to sleep better?”
Rink sighed.
He took a small vial out of his bag.
“Five drop for a good sleep in the night.”
“Thank you. And how long until it works?”
Around 10 hours.
“Hm, I think I can work with that”, Imoen stood up and vanished.

Shao looked after her and shrugged.
“Ok, while she has an evil Masterplan who might help or not help us, bring us in trouble or not work at all, we should work on our tactic for the next game.”
Suddenly Imoen stood beside Rink again.
“Do you have something that works on magical items, too? Like magical brooms. What reacts with them in a funny way?”

To: Guild of Legislators, Guild of Messengers

The Quidditch World Cup is underway! Our purple group of warriors have meetings with Nilrahrarfan, Kriegierseien, the Equestrian States and Shapoer here in a nation called the Free Republics. I'm told that the rest of Ko-oren has heard of Kriegierseien and the Equestrian States, but we've never even seen any of the other nations before. The atmosphere is great, and most other people here are capable of incredible feats. I've even heard that the Equestrian team doesn't just feature humans, so I'll keep you all posted on that. About everyone else: nearly everyone has the ability to perform magic, and seeing that it makes me wonder why we were invited. Magic in this context meaning waving a wand, saying (or sometimes staying silent) a word, and anything can happen from a useful lighter to making your voice dozens of times louder (which the commentators here use) to more destructive purposes, in some cases even drawing blood or worse. Don't worry, the authorities here have everything under control and magic battles are restricted to those that actively seek out controlled fights.

In that light, our linking books seem like a very simple thing, although I believe nobody here has the magic ability to create worlds at will, let alone live in them. Something we take for granted is raising eyebrows here, and many witches and wizards here have asked me to join me back in Rozodhin. Having visited the Worlds of Teredahl, Shanigun and obviously Rozodhin before, I want to see what their reaction is to the fact that we do not just have the ability to create deserts, but any kind of landscape, whether it exists in World Zero or not. On that topic, the World Zero's Free Republics' landscape and climate are very reminiscent of World Zero's Ko-oren and it seems that Ko-oren itself contains many of the landscape that are possible in World Zero after all.

Now I'm sure that a lot of you are curious for how our team is doing. Well, first of all, the sport of Quidditch is ever so slightly different here. Catching the snitch yields 150 points instead of 41, and points are awarded for win margins far more than wins itself. So, running up the score and catching the snitch when you already have the lead is so rewarding. Well, I'll have you know that the Worlds' team has done exactly that: Those from Teredahl may be very happy knowing that their very own Tahdi waited to (or couldn't earlier) catch the Snitch when the Chasers had already put up the team 180-60! Eighteen scores to six, and Tahdi made things so much worse for a final score of 330-60 (mind the 150 points for the Snitch)! Ko-oren have only played a single game but already lead the group. I think explaining the exact points system would go too far for this short communication, but rest assured it all makes sense.

Razentahn's Chaser Ki'ini was stellar during the entire 68 minutes, scoring nine of eighteen scores but most of all perfectly dodging the Bludgers and every attempt to strip the ball. Pehsenthen's Keeper Pinahgu managed to keep five shots out very well, keeping the Nilrahrarfan score down.

I wrote to you from the Free Republics, and I'll find you again after the next match.

Modana--translated edition

The Quidditch World Cup is afoot (abroom?) in the Free Republics, which means many fans have flocked to the colossal Redwood Forest Stadium. And many more are following from afar, be that by wireless, upgraded Omnioculars, or press reports. Perched within a Disillusioned treehouse, Anjana Thambi is one of those virtual spectators, her wireless hovering precariously above a small stove. "One of my students, he enchanted this for me," she says, feeding a plump and indulgent gray owl. "If it comes crashing down, well. I do need to hone my reflexes, too."

Thambi is a pasagru, a Namirite magician who mentors young mages with the mystic knowledge handed down from her tutor. Her tutees include an enchanted harpist and a sparkling pyrotechnician, but none are better known than Bita Sarhaddi, the Seeker for the Surariro Serpents and now the Zwangzug national team. "I taught her many things," Thambi says without false modesty. "How to Transfigure, probe out truth, awaken light in darkness. Even, I think, how to focus and endure amid the long flights. But not how to dive and soar--that, she taught herself."

Without the semi-formal setup of the Warzenhund intramurals to bring her to scouts' attention, Sarhaddi partook in regional scrimmages; a few Namirite apprentices had an ongoing series of matches. "It was a reward for self-discipline," Sarhaddi explained to a reporter; "If I could withstand the isolation of training, Pasagru Thambi would let me take a few days off to go through the Floo and fly with the others. The socialization was a nice change of pace, as much as the broom games." She originally played Chaser, before demonstrating the ability to fly no-handed after several injuries; as many of her rivals overtook her in brawn, her captains encouraged her to play Seeker instead.

Thambi is not currently mentoring another student. "I said after my most recent one that it would be my last, it takes more out of you than you think," she says, "but I said that before too. So we'll see."

All of her students have acquired wands from Desai Vendaki, perhaps the oldest wandmaking tradition in Zwangzug. "The current patron, Harish, is a gifted steward of trees as well as a wandcrafter," she says. "I taught his son, though of course now he wants to be a Serpent hero too instead of carrying on the family business, so perhaps Harish is not the most happy with me at this hour."

But of all her accomplishments, perhaps Thambi's proudest is in guarding magical beasts. "I saw my first phoenix when I was fifteen and training with my pasagru. He did not believe I could have, but I did! And from that moment I knew that the no-maj tales were true, that they were the greatest creatures on wing."

Though Sarhaddi may soon be challenging them for dominance in the air.

‭Where the first match had been over in no time, the second one seemed to grind on forever. Pasang Nair had plenty of time to show off his agility. And time to get tired of it. After 3 hours, the players were all tired and bored and thoroughly ready for the game to end. Wangdi had almost caught the snitch a couple of times, but it kept getting away from him when he was distracted by stray bludgers or other players flying across his path. The Sherpas were leading by a wide margin and Tashi and Namgyal had given up playing defense to help Wangdi find the snitch. One of the Bisimian chasers punted the quaffle at the Sherpas' left goal hoop. Changjun intercepted it -- AGAIN -- and tossed it to Dai. It was at least the 20th shot she'd blocked that day. "Will someone catch the damn snitch!" she said irritably. She was really glad she had a proper quidditch broom instead of trying to stay airborne this long using only her own blood-magic. It took another half hour before Wangdi FINALLY caught the snitch and everyone could stagger off to the locker rooms. They smiled with relief as the final score was announced: they had won 530 to 240 -- but they were too exhausted to celebrate very vigorously. Mostly, they just wanted to rest.

Payback was hopefully on the menu as the Purple Knights took on Darmen in the second match of the 9th Quidditch World Cup. A strong opening performance had the Taeshan faithful full of hope headed into a matchup with Darmen, the side that knocked them out at the end of the last Group Stage, and the last tournament as a whole. A strong performance was hoped for from the squad and after a short first match, a much more contested affair seemed likely in the second match of the campaign for the Knights. Ollivander Williams with a 1/1 snitch catch rate on the season, was hopeful to push the Knights one win more towards advancing back to the playoff rounds, and the chasers were ready to score some goals.

It was a back and forth affair between the two familiar sides. Jeremiah Caldwell had his first start in a national team jersey after a strong outing from the other chasers in the first match, with Albert Hancock sick the day required it. It was a strong performance from the rookie, and the side had a strong 120-100 lead when the snitch was caught. Luckily it was Ollivander Williams who caught the snitch defeating Darmen and giving the Knights another strong goal differential helping win. The other matchup was Banija beat Zwangzug making the Knights the sole group member with a record above 500 as they head into their third match with matchups still with Zwangzug and Banija.

The tables didn't even matter to the Sarzonians.

They knew Bisim carried a 0-0-2 record into their fixture against the Stars, who had just wrapped up a relatively easy victory over Starblaydia. They knew the recipe was there for a trap result. They knew Bisim would likely approach the match with a desperate mentality. With their status as the only winless side in Group B, they knew they'd have to defeat the Stars to have a realistic chance at a spot in the Round of 16.

Chris Entwistle made sure to remind his charges of the urgency Bisim would have to play. He wanted to make sure his team showed their own, even though the Stars would simply put themselves in a favourable position with a victory instead of facing the fight for their lives they would have in Bisim's position in the table. He wondered privately if his exhortations would do the trick since he didn't consider himself the most eloquent public speaker or a man who could inspire with words.

As the match unfolded, he realised he didn't have to. His Stars played as inspired a brand of quidditch as he'd seen them play, and in fact, as inspired as the team was in their first semifinal fixture against Delaclava. That match was the first draw in the history of the Quidditch World Cup, and it led to a replay that sent the Stars to a third place playoff that still rippled through the quidditch playing community. Sarzonia were playing aggressive defence, and their offense was clicking on all cylinders. Bisim were being turned back time and again, and Sarzonian beaters were easily closing off Bisim seekers from desperate attempts to capture the snitch.

Finally, Chris glanced out at his youngest brother Tommy, and the younger man returned his glance. They knew each other well enough to know what the look meant.

It's go time. Tommy made a darting run, dodging erratically thrown bludgers from Bisim's beaters, except one that hit Tommy Entwistle's broom and harmlessly bounced. He made a simple stutter step that faked his opponent into a stagger and calmly captured the snitch, propelling Sarzonia to an easy 420-160 victory that gave Sarzonia the maximum possible seven points and an unblemished 2-0-0 record. When the Group B results scrolled on the scoreboard at the Quidditch Pitch at the Academy of the Magical Arts, Chris Entwistle grimaced slightly. The Sherpa Empire soundly defeated the previous Group B leaders Pius Desurongcrandis 620–380. PD, as Stars players took to calling the erstwhile group leaders, brought a 2-0-0 mark into the match. They still had the 14 standings points from their two previous wins, but now the next match between Sarzonia and PD wouldn't carry nearly as much drama as it would have with the opposite result.

The Stars were hoping for a match that would essentially determine which team would have the group title outright and which one would have to hope for Matchday 5 results to go their way. They might still get that, but they would walk in as the only Group B side without a loss, while PD would come in with the additional motivation of a team smarting from an ugly loss and still fighting for a favourable place in the knockout rounds. The victory by The Sherpa Empire meant that Matchday 5 could potentially be all important for both sides, instead of a possible chance for the Stars to use the match as a tune up for the knockout rounds.

As for Sarzonia's first opponents, Starblaydia were idle. However, their position was suddenly looking more grim than their pedigree would normally suggest. They currently sit in fourth place in a five-team table with PD two points clear of them. They have hapless Bisim as their next opponents, and would benefit from a Sarzonia victory only if they hold serve and defeat their winless opponents. A victory for the purple-clad wizards from a country that considers Sarzonia a sporting nemesis and one from the Navy and Silver would give Starblaydia an all important third place standing and would go a long way toward guaranteeing a spot in the knockout rounds. It would also officially close the door on Bisim's potential qualification.

One thing was clear as the Sarzonians collapsed into their beds after their showers: There was still a lot of work left.

‭Game 3 was another long one. After a couple of hours, Wangdi was getting embarrassed that he hadn't caught the snitch yet. "Are we quite sure this is a regulation snitch we're using?" he asked, a little huffily. He had noticed that a few of the other teams had also had some long high-scoring games.

‭"It's not the snitch; it's your eyes!" said Jiuzhen Dai, whose temper was also starting to fray. Wangdi opened his mouth to say something snotty about the need to be more respectful when talking to royalty, but just then, before he got the words out, Dai happened to catch a glimpse of something flickering gold. "The snitch is right there!"

‭Both seekers looked to see what Dai was pointing at. Both of them dove for the snitch, but Arma's path was blocked by a bludger that Tashi of Jalalabad had hit right at him, forcing him to dodge. Tashi cheered and pumped his fist in the air as Wangdi reached the snitch first and grabbed it out of the air.
