Friendship Trophy (ODI Cricket - Darmen at Ko-oren)

Postby Ko-oren » Mon Apr 01, 2019 12:09 pm

Friendship Trophy - Darmen at Ko-oren ODI series

With the GCF Test cricket season long behind us, Ko-oren is to host Darmen for three ODI matches. Good luck trying to discern all the shades of green on your screen! A white ball will be used to make it just a little easier for everyone. Things are not made easier by the KCA, scheduling each match in the Green state and one match in Greencaster itself.

First ODI: 5th of April 2019 @ Southbight Ground (29,000), Ansonville, West Surbourneshire

Second ODI: 8th of April 2019 @ Silverion Ground (25,000), Cirelbourne, East Surbourneshire

Third ODI: 11th of April 2019 @ Greencaster Oval (50,000), Greencaster, Greencaster

And with that, this thread is open for rosters and RPs from both nations involved!

For timeline purposes, the Friendship Trophy will occur late-April, 2042, about a month after the conclusion of the more recent Test season. The Veergati Cup will not take place until October, 2042.

I'm also slowly finishing scorecards for all of Darmen's Season 10 Test matches, the final two matches against Eastfield Lodge are yet to be done. I'll probably post them at the start of the upcoming T20 Championships, no sense in bumping the Test thread. That being said, if Ko-oren, or anyone else for that matter, needs to take a look at the stats for RP purposes before then, just let me know.

The three match ODI Friendship Trophy between Darmen and Ko-oren marks the first time that Darmen will play official One-day International matches since the ODI World Cup some three decades ago. Despite having zero clue how to play the game then, the group of ex-amateur baseball players fluked their way into a Super Eight's appearance. Darmen is a much different team now, having made several appearances in the later stages of the World T20 Championships and being named World Test Champions two seasons ago.

The Selection Committee of the Darmeni Cricket Board has selected a fifteen player squad to make the trip to Ko-oren for the Friendship Trophy. All fifteen players participated in the last Test season; Crofton Becke, Tristram Kaufman and Bruno Sarkozy are the three players who have not been carried over into the ODI set-up.

Bowling coach Normand Seeger will be taking a temporary leave of absence to focus on the upcoming domestic season, where he is still an active player with the Bloomer club. Fabián Bolton of Cosmopolitans will fill the vacancy on an interim basis.

The Greenblues had a hapless run chase after Darmen set a mighty target of 303. Myers made sure that no Ko-orenite batsman could last too long, while the fast bowlers mainly limited runs. Ahern, Commins and Douglas had a nice spell in the middle but even they couldn't break the 6 RPO needed to get to the 303. The Darmeni made Chapman and Darknoll pay most of all, freely swinging at whatever Chapman threw out - as a result, he was also the best wicket-taker. Courtenay hit his 10 overs fairly quickly, unfortunate as he was the one limiting runs most of all.

The 27-thousand and some in attendance saw a dominant Darmeni team in Ansonville, where preparations for the next cricket season are well under way. After all, there is not much else to do in Ansonville: while they are in the middle of rugby union territory, their bid for a professional team wasn't acted upon. The city is in a really odd place anyway: it's right there in a densely populated area of Ko-oren, right on the edge of Greencaster's sphere of influence, and just outside the cities of Leeshire as well. Ansonville is the only large settlement in an area consisting of many tiny towns - so you would say there would be a market for professional sports here. There is so much to do just a few hours away: Maynard's soccer team, Aubury, Maynard and Greencaster all have rugby union teams... But that is the problem of the Shire of Surbourne outside of Greencaster. We will travel to the other places in Surbourneshire to compare what we see.

It's funny how Ko-oren's most populated, and most densely populated subdivision show three different sides. West Surbourneshire, where Ansonville is, is rapidly aging amidst a booming agricultural industry - Ko-oren's breadbasket, after all. It sure is rich, and old.

Darmen has started their three match ODI tour of Ko-oren with a decisive victory, claiming a 96 run victory at the Southbight Ground in Ansonville. Theudofrid Milligan's excellent innings of 104 runs was a true spectacle to watch, Milligan patiently crafting runs from seemingly nothing as he exploited gaps in the Greenblues fielding placements. Milligan wasn't the only batsman to have a good outing: Vinnie Acker scored 71 runs and Ellar Ready claimed a half-century 55 not out. Late in the innings, Darmen began to falter a bit, but by then Darmen had built up a decent total and weren't too concerned.

The Dragonflies' innings got off to a rocky start, as Dorian Myers took Reginald Twaddle's wicket in just the second over. Myers' 3-56 now marks the best bowling figures of any Darmeni in one-day cricket. With great economical bowling from the Darmenis, no Ko-orenite could establish a long lasting partnership, and only one, Arnold Douglas was able to cross the half-century mark with 53 runs.

Darmen now travels to Cirelbourne for the second match. Should Darmen claim victory, the Friendship Trophy will be Darmen's, which would allow the reserves to have some playing time in the final match in Greencaster.

(This takes place between match 2 and 3)

The bowlers had plenty to go for in Cirelbourne, the de facto capital of East Surbourneshire, but in the end neither team was all out. Darmen went first, reaching 233 on a slow pitch and losing seven wickets in the process. The target was there, it was definitely possible, but it meant attempting an RPO that was not advisable on this surface. Still, Crawford and Twaddle marched out to do their best. Twaddle was back within minutes, while Crawford partnered with Willis. Early on, they had trouble reaching four runs per over, but that was increasingly easier as both batsmen settled in. Crawford then took Ahern to the team's 50-mark. Myers finally got to the opener, and Ahern worked together with Commins for a short while, then Douglas, then Wilkins. Those that went out, at least went out swinging and Armbruster's usual magical top edge powers did not affect Cirelbourne that day.

Wilkins then stayed in for nearly the entire match. The bowlers that came after him just tried to get Wilkins to bat. The bottom order had a massive day, was responsible for a huge number of runs, and managed to attain the win in the end! Nine wickets fell, and it was a edge-of-your-seat match for all of the last 10-15 overs. Eventually, with 20 runs to go and plenty of overs in hand, the biggest limit seemed to be the number of wickets. Raycraft and Chapman survived six overs together, scoring the 20 runs needed and being the heroes of the team after they've first taken five wickets together in the first innings.

East Surbourneshire was in the middle of preparing for the next season, projected to be a mid-table team among Ko-oren's six cricketing regions. Cirelbourne and Bruncester dominate discourse in the area, by far the two largest cities, though both fell into big problems with the mining industry reduced to an unimportant part of the national economy. The problems faced by the region are apparent to everyone who goes into either city, but the issues might be even bigger as soon as you head out to the smaller towns nearby. No matter how gorgeous the region is (ocean, the country's largest national park and a mountain range in the space of about 150 km), towns such as Opalshire, Zinchester, Limecroft and Iron Vale - all named after what made these towns tick originally - have a hard time discovering their new identities. The area is hardly known for its friendliness - as evidenced by a town aptly named 'Abyss' (hosting one of the country's most renowned amateur soccer teams). As with most industrial (or previously industrial) regions, sports are a big part of the region's pride and identity - and there is still plenty to find in this regard. This place deserves a big cricket team. If we could, we would have placed every single ODI match here... but Surbourneshire is pretty large and varied.

The 50,000 fans packed into the Greencaster Oval were treated to an exciting match as the deciding match of the Friendship Trophy between Darmen and Ko-oren was played out before them. Ko-oren posted their highest innings total of the series as they got things started, scoring 265 in 48.3 overs, 20 year old Lester Ahern leading the way with his innings of 79. Darmen's pace bowling eventually took its toll on the Greenblues, reducing Ko-oren to its tail end. Gardenar's spin took the final wicket, sneaking past Norman Chapman's bat and into his pads.

From the start, Darmen didn't hold back as they went to work in the middle, openers Vinnie Acker and Sigmund Winter smashing hits to the boundaries any chance they had. Ellar Ready lasted the longest, scoring 81 runs from 77 balls faced. Solomon Marlow, in for the struggling Ionathan Odell, slowed things down for a short period, but the required run rate kept going down anyways. After Gardenar succumbed to a Chapman delivery, wicketkeeper Adalfuns Armbruster came in and smashed three straight fours to win the match.

For Darmen, the victory means their first ever ODI series victory and confidence for the upcoming T20 World Championships. Ellar Ready was excellent with the bat, averaging 175 runs, but even he was outscored by Theudofrid Milligan who scored 177 total. Dorian Myers was the best bowler for Darmen, taking seven total wickets at an average of 22.14.

For Ko-oren, the series loss is their second straight and they'll have questions to answer as they prepare for the T20 World Championships. Lester Ahern's 79 in the last match made him the highest run scorer for the Greenblues, scoring 143 total at an average of 47.67. Bowling-wise, Norman Chapman and Albin Raycraft each took five wickets, Raycraft being the more economical of the two.

After the match, the two teams met at a local pub for beers, celebrating some good cricket and the friendship between the two teams and nations.
