Barunia, after Jeruselem drew 3-3 with the hosts
Keeper Bianca Dallas looking a bit dazed and confused with the coach Kaz

Kaz: You alright?
Bianca: Um, I don't feel great. Anyway, why can't I remember the game?
Kaz: You've got memory loss, you got knocked out during the game.
Bianca: OK ... that explains a lot
Kaz: You were getting to the ball when an opposition defender was trying to get to it, and you got shoulder in the head
Bianca: Well, that explains this bloody bruise.

Kaz: You will feel you hit a wall or two ...
Bianca: Did I stop the goal?
Kaz: Well, you did put the attacker off and he missed.
Bianca: I'm assuming I missed the rest of the game
Kaz: Yes
Bianca: What was the scoreline then?

Kaz: Eh, another draw 3-3. Yes, another draw.
Bianca: I guess Barunia is the top seed and a draw isn't too bad
Kaz: Yes but we could have actually won
Bianca: I should be OK for next game, but I feel like complete crap at the moment
Kaz: Well, you did help us save the game ... in a kind of indirect way
Bianca: That's my job, I didn't intend to knock myself out. Get the results from the cancer people?

Kaz: Not yet, that takes time.
Bianca: So you don't know then
Kaz: Nope
Bianca: You don't want that ovarian cancer, I've lost an aunt to that.
Kaz: Yeah?
Bianca: Yeah, by the time they diagnosed her it was too late to save her

Kaz: At my age, I should be worried.
Bianca: She was old but she didn't know she had it
Kaz: I don't want cancer, I got enough health issues
Bianca: There is a genetic link to ovarian cancer, some people have the gene
Kaz: Well, I don't recall having family dying from it
Bianca: You can get from a non-genetic cause anyway

Kaz: What about your side of the family?
Bianca: We don't have the genetic marker, but we got tested just to make sure.
Kaz: The cancer won't kill me within this world cup anyway
Bianca: Nah it will kill you when you're older
Kaz: Well, I've had my kids and all so I done my part in this world
Bianca: Oh yes, you're actually a Dallas like me.

Kaz: Yes we have our duty, I mean we are females.
Bianca: Yeah, thanks for reminding me.
Kaz: You take care of yourself, it's all downhill when you get old.
Bianca: Getting whacked in the head isn't one of those things that helps!
Kaz: Yes, that can cause indirect brain damage.
Bianca: I have read concussion does that. Not happy Jan.

Kaz: You've had a few concussions according your record here
Bianca: Err yes, people like knocking me out for fun it seems
Kaz: I think you overcommit yourself and well, run into people
Bianca: They run into me, I'm just doing my job. You have to got for the ball, don't wait for someone else to make their move.
Kaz: Just be more careful
Bianca: It's all or nothing for me. Do something 100% or don't do it. None of this half hearted crap

FOOTBALL: WORLD CUP 82 QUALIFIERS
Filindostan 4-4 Cassadaigua: Three takeaways from the pivotal Group 14 match

SAN MARCO - Ethel Toh will be the happier of the two managers from the 4-4 draw between her side and Stephanie Sweeney's Cassadaigua side, having failed to take any points against the two-time champions of the multiverse in the past two meetings between the teams. The result left both teams deadlock at the top of Group 14 on points, though Sweeney's Fillies have a better goal difference against the Pula Garudas.

Let's look back and see what FSNA Berita Filindo can take away from the scintillating match that had happened last night.

Toh shows us why she doesn't need the players she axed... at the moment

The Filindostani squad who faced the Fillies at the Filindostan National Stadium was a very different one from the one who lost to the same team at Concord Heights Stadium. Only the three substitutes from the Matchday Four squad played in the match, with Sutikno, Mordecai, and Ina all getting their caps for the reverse fixture in Filindostan.

Abram (6.5)
Graci (7.5) -- Braham (5.5) -- Buknoy (6) -- Dwi (7)
Sutikno (7)
Shiloh (7.5) -- Mordecai (6.5) -- Ryan (6.5)
Bienvenido (6) -- Ina (9)

Subs used: Deddy Lie (7) for Sutikno (64')
Seto (5) for Bienvenido (71')
Kadek (-) for Braham (87')

Aside from Ryan who filled in for Bilhah, and Sutikno, for Deddy Lie, the lineup is what is deemed as Ethel's ideal lineup. At the moment, the squad at the disposal has been working wonders for her, despite the notable absences of the Weici twins, Yish, and the Empress of Defence. But everything has a honeymoon period which we know does not last forever, and we should see the aforementioned players be back in the setup, whether Toh keeps her job permanently, or another manager take her reins at the end of the qualifying campaign.

The decision rests solely on Toh's shoulders, and should she relinquish it to say, his assistant Xavier Rinoso, the players she froze out of the setup might find their way back to the lineup soon. But while the FFF board member is there, the status quo would remain.

We also had a 'wonderkid' in our ranks: Ina

The conversation at Group 14's media outlets regarding the next generation of the multiverse's best players point to two people - Starblaydia's Sutter McCloud, and Cassadaigua's Rachel Schanke, the latter scoring Cassadaigua's two goals which allowed them back to the game after being two goals down at the 70th minute. But Ina's contribution in the match, being involved in the buildup of all the Filindostani goals, should also give the Perokojak forward a say in that conversation as well, though she'll turn 24 next year*, when the World Cup finals and the Cup of Harmony kicks off.

Starting in the Filindostan's Under-18 and Under-21 teams, it was a matter of time before Ina broke out of the international scene, after the Jakulta club signed her from UTP-J to pair up with another of their youngsters in Bienvenido, and the partnership was translated as well to the national team after Toh froze out the usual starters and some of her competition for the substitutes in the match. And when the opportunity was provided to her, she duly took advantage, particularly at the Sherpa Empire match where she scored all the goals in their 4-2 win which inched them closer to a top 2 spot back then.

Should her development continue past the qualifiers, she will be a regular fixture in the Pula Garuda lineup even if the other players do return.

Filindostan should be relentless in their last five matches of the campaign

It was an entertaining match at the Gelora Nasional Pilindostan**, in which Filindostan opened the scoring with Ina Teterissa scoring the opening goal at the fifth minute. Good passing between Sutikno Suparmanputra and Mordecai Sitindaon culminated to a better lob to a running forward who then lobbed the ball past Kristen Speller to give the Filindos the lead, which did not last long. Six minutes later, the match was dead level again, with Caitlyn Mayer scoring for the Fillies, taking advantage of a miscommunication between Braham Luiz and Buknoy Salcedo, scoring with a volley at the near post which flew into the top corner, giving Abram Jampang no chance. Sweeney's team eventually took the lead just after twelve minutes, as Braham brought down Mayer outside the box, and the ensuing free kick sequence led to Hannah Ranucci giving the lead to the Rushmori nation. They though, did not have the lead coming to the halftime break, as Filindostan scored two quickfire goals in the 31st and 39th minute, with Ina scoring her second, a flick which rolled past Speller, and providing her strike partner a share of the goals as well as he received a square ball from her to make a well-placed shot to give back the lead to the Esportivans.

The Baptism of Fire 66 winners extended the lead 25 minutes after the halftime break, as a counter-attack ensued catching the Fillies off-guard, and Ina putting a great through ball to Mordecai to score again past the Cassadagan keeper once again. It was this time when Sweeney brought on the young Schanke to replace Mayer, and within two minutes of her in the pitch, she was able to get one goal back for the World Cup 50 and 51 champions. It was a perfect link up play between her and the experienced Ranucci, with a shot enough to sway the ball away from Abram. She didn't have to wait long to double her tally, as she completed an unassisted run to score impressively past a helpless keeper from Venividicci, and level the match again, 4-4. Both teams tried to get a late winner through Ina and Schanke, but the spoils had to be shared between the two leading teams in Group 14.

Filindostan have to remain relentless in front of the net, if they want to keep their four point lead towards an automatic qualification spot, and will face Abristan in a tricky away match. Any slipups from this point on will have big implications in the Group 14 table, with the five-time World Cup champions ready to pounce.

Wilfried Baume and Valladares Come From Behind to Sink Abanhfleft

ABANHFLEFT (VAP) — The Valladar national football team earned a huge victory against a direct rival for World Cup qualification thanks to a stellar performance from Wilfried Baume, who became the hero of the night against Abanhfleft by scoring a hat-trick. The win keeps the team coached by Paulo Oliveira on top of Group 13 with 30 points and with a big chance to return to the World Cup finals after two failed attempts, while also enacting revenge for the previous meeting in Valladares, where the Fleftics narrowly beat the Valladars in front of a sold-out National Stadium.

With both teams coming into the match closely packed in the group standings (the Valladars led their hosts by 3 points before the game) and knowing that a defeat for either would be a hard blow to their chances of qualification, this match was considered a must-win affair for both sides. The first half began with the usual Valladar onslaught directed at the goal defended by veteran Fleftic goalkeeper Stephanie Bryan, as the visitors had already come knocking the door twice in the first 10 minutes of play, with an attempt by Deportivo Junín striker Andy Navarro going wide in the fourth minute, and Wilfried Baume crashing a shot on the crossbar five minutes later. However, the Zozi player would have his redemption in the 15th minute by getting in the way of a pass by centerback Miranda Sullins and then sending the ball at an unreachable point for Bryan to break the deadlock and put the Valladars ahead in the match. Seeing themselves already behind in the scoreboard, the Fleftic women took the control of the ball and started pushing for the equalizer, being also aided by midfielder Christian O'Brien having a bad day. The trio of creative midfielders led by Elene Liner found few problems to get behind O'Brien's back several times, allowing them to continuously supply their lone women up front Kelly McGinnis with assists. It was a matter of time for Abanhfleft to score the equalizer, however, what nobody expected was that the situation would change radically for the Valladars in just six minutes: in the 38th minute, one of those attempts was finally capitalized by McGinnis to score the equalizer, and in the 44th minute winger Amelie Rusev intercepted a defective deflection from the Valladar defense in order to surprise Paulo Gaviria with a mid-range shot and put the hosts ahead 2-1. To make matters worse for La Nacional at the end of the first half, Adam Pinto had the chance to equalize just before the halftime whistle with a penalty awarded to Valladares after he was clumsely fouled in the box by Catarina Soler, but he missed this chance by sending the shot up the crossbar and into the local sidestand.

For the start of the second half, and looking for a way to revert the situation, Valladar gaffer Paulo Oliveira decided to make two substitutions, leaving O'Brien and Pinto in the lockers as a punishment for their poor performances and bringing Gaëtan Malicki and Aymeric Fortin to the field. With Malicki, the Valladar midfield became more consistent and less permeable, and stopped the Fleftic attempts to increase the advantage. At the same time, Fortin's speed was a much-needed refreshment for the Valladar offense, which enabled them to give trouble to the home side's defenders. Precisely, a combination between Arley Barrios, Aymeric Fortin, and Wilfried Baume ended up with the latter heading the ball into the rival goal for the Valladar equalizer after 65 minutes. From this moment on, the match became a back-and-forth affair with each side pushing for the winner: for every time the Fleftics staged an attack, there was a Valladar response and vice versa, however, Baume saved a last trick for the end of the match, receiving a ball deflected by Martín Delgado in a corner kick in order to race to the Fleftic goal in a deadly counterattack that ended with the winning goal for Valladares. Abanhfleft had a last chance to avoid defeat in injury time, though, but that last shot by McGinnis was twice blocked and then punched to the sideline by Paulo Gaviria.

This victory in Abanhfleft allowed La Nacional to open up a 6-point gap with the Fleftics, who were left docked in fourth place with 24 points and had their World Cup finals aspirations seriously dented by this loss. The side coached by Paulo Oliveira will now return to Valladares in order to play two home matches in a row: first, they will host Soviet Micronesia, who are dead-last in the group and have been already eliminated from contention, and after that the ones visiting Swangard will be defending World Champions Vilita, who now seem to have put themselves back on track in the qualifying race after a stumbling performance in the first half of the campaign. Considering that third-placed Savojarna are trailing the Valladars by just two points, it will be of utmost importance for La Nacional to make the most out of the upcoming streak of home matches in order to put themselves closer to a return to the World Cup finals, while also derailing another one of their direct rivals in the process.

The Scene is set at the Royal Suite at the Stadium of the Restoration, in Busukuma, National Capitol Region, Banija

Kabaka Mwanga was sitting here, in a meeting room, with his younger brother, Omugabe Basamula, and the businessman, Andrew Mavuto. This was something that he liked to do- the Stadium of the Restoration had always reserved a suite for members of the Royal family. Only useable by those invited by members of the House of Katende, it was something that was used at many events at the stadium. Not often by the Kabaka, of course, but Mwanga thought that it would be a perfect setting to kill two birds with one stone. The first, being that they had to have a followup meeting on the oil discovery, and the second, of course, to be there for the Brenecia match.

It was just those three, plus their aides and the usual entourage of security figures. He had, of course, made a prematch appearance inside the stadium during the singing of the national anthem, to the loud roar of Banijan fans, cheering their new head of state. A sea of green and orange stripes, around the stadium, made him smile- Banijans would always support the national team. He even eyed the small travelling band of Brenecian fans in the top corner of the stadium. This was a massive tilt between the group's top two teams- and he didn't want to miss it for the world, even if he was adjusting to his new responsibilities as Kabaka and Head of State.

As he had made his way up to the suite, with Omugabe Basamula and Andrew Mavuto waiting for him, he had been thinking about this meeting. How was this going to go? He had been reading the briefing on the protests yesterday in Entebbe, and that was not good. The protests were very anti-Mavuto, and the headlines covering it in this morning's newspapers were not good. Headlines that were talking about Andrew Mavuto, headlines that were talking about the strict opposition of the Lugazi. That was something that would need to be met, directly, head on.

"Your Majesty, are you ready to begin?" Said Andrew Mavuto. THey were all staring at the action on the field- the early going had been a back and forth battle so far, with Falcon Case, the Brenecian midfielder, forcing a diving save from Lemuel Bereket just three minutes into the match. Still, of course, nil to nil early on.

"Yes, I am." Kabaka Mwanga replied. "Let's get this started. Basamula?" He addressed his brother. "What is your read on these protests?"

"Your Majesty," Said Omugabe Basamula. "These protests show the seriousness, and the willingness, of the Lugazi to go far with these protests. They really don't like what's going on here- Chief Iota, of course, sees this as his land. Which, technically, it is, but that's a discussion for a different day. He doesn't want to see people drilling on his land, he doesn't want to see Entebbe and the surrounding region with an influx of Banijans from the rest of the country, and foreigners from even further abroad- this is something that we're going to have to deal with."

"Your Majesty," Said Andrew Mavuto. "If you'll excuse me, I know I'm not in politics- but they have absolutely no right. This is a discovery that is made for the people of all of Banija, by my team, and by my company. This was legally purchased land, land that is mostly already owned, and finding these investment opportunities, frankly, has a chance to make us all very, very rich- not just us personally, but to restructure the entire economy.”

“Andrew,” Said Omugabe Basamula. “We can’t just railroad them. WE don’t want to piss off the smaller tribes- that’s an awful way to operate Government. It’s all about collaboration, working together- we all agree on the ultimate goal, but there is a right way, and a wrong way, to do things. We can’t railroad them, we need to this correctly.”

“Your Majesty,” said Andrew Mavuto. “You don’t realize what is at stake. Aren’t we sick of being known as the sick man of the Glorious Southwest? Isn’t it tiresome to be the poorest nation in the Glorious Southwest, and one of the poorest across Atlantian Oceania? I don’t know about you- but that bothers me. But this is a chance- not even generational, but this may be a one time, God-given opportunity to finally reset the narrative. To finally change the economic trajectory of Banija. This might be the chance for Banija, and Banijans, to finally understand that we can take our place, among the community of nations. Not the sick man, not taking foreign aid, not any of that. This is the opportunity for us to take control of our future destiny- are you ready for it?”

They all looked at each other, after that comment. Of course, Kabaka Mwanga had served as the Waziri for his own father for many years. HE had travelled all across the multiverse, seen massive cities with towering skylines. Seen large communities of Banijans in much richer countries, doing well for themselves. IT was a deep desire of his to see Banija advance economically, but while keeping their culture. The businessman was right- this was Banija’s opportunity to transform himself. And he was not going to miss it.

They sat in silence for a moment, and they were about to start talking again, until something happened in the game. They turned their attention to the field. It looked to be a counter attack for the Banijans, an opportunity for them to take what would surely be a stunning lead for the Kadongo Kamu, ahead of the halftime break. Chibuzo Afolayan was racing up the sideline, with a Brenecian defender in hot pursuit, as they had a 2 on 2, with Gitonga Kahara racing up the other sideline. HE sent the ball across, and Kahara was able to meet the ball in stride and hit a thunderous volley from the 18 into the back of the net. All three of them leaped into the air, and the stadium started to rock. But the celebrations quickly subsided- the sideline referee’s flag was high in the air. Kahara, unfortunately, was about 3 steps offsides, and this was clearly confirmed on the replays. A small moment of ecstasy, and then a let down, but still- for the 2nd time this campaign, Banija was hanging with the former World champions.

And then, the attention went back to the meeting. They were talking about plans- how to negotiate with the Lugazi, how to talk with Chief Iota, when to talk to him, and the need, of course, to call these Echani investors. Of course, they needed to include the Katikkiro as well, and when to loop in the Lukiiko- as they’d have a key role to play. Later in the 2nd half, though, the game’s lone goal was scored. Falcon Chase missed two opportunities to defeat the Kadongo Kamu in the home leg- he was not going to miss an opportunity in the return leg. He was played a beautiful ball by Riordan, and had a one on one with Lemuel Bereket. He beat the Banijan goalkeeper on the dribble, and simply tapped the ball into the back of the net, to give the Brenecians a 1-0 lead, away from home. The small, travelling band of away fans celebrated, as the stadium went silent.

The tension, of course, built throughout the night as the Banijans tried desperately to equalize. Griffin Riordan had a chance to put the final nail into the Banijan coffin, but of course, Lemuel Bereket made a stunning save in a one on one situation to keep the Banijans in the game. Both teams were aggressive, and the Banijans had been trying desperately to tie the match. The best opportunity being, of course, Ensa Camara’s header towards goal in the 87th minute, that was cleared off the line by Keziah Broxham, who also plays his club football in Cosumar.

Shortly after that, the final whistle was blown- the final score was one to nil, and it was in favor of the Brenecians. The Banijans had earned, hopefully, a respect from Brenecia after their two efforts against this top five team. Had played them well, but shows, of course, how far Banija has to go to truly reach the pinnacle of this game, as the RBSA is striving so hard to do. And, of course, as the match wrapped up, the meeting wrapped up. Specific tasks had been handed out, especially to his brother. Omugabe Basamula was tasked with calling Swede Johanssen, the Ambassador from Baker Park, and connecting him with who to talk to in the Baker Park business community. The rumor was that there was suppliers of crucial equipment, like oil rigs, from Baker Park ready to invest, but that needed to be confirmed. HE told Omugabe Basamula to let him know all that he found out.

In the meantime, Kabaka Mwanga would have to deal with Chief Iota directly. He decided that a direct meeting was necessary. He decided to write a letter to request a meeting. He would see if some direct persuasion would do the job…

That's it, we're dependant on Damukuni's and Bongo Johnson's results if we want to make the World Cup. There are no playoffs this year, the top two qualify directly and even then we're at the mercy of their mistakes versus the rest of Group 5. We still play Bongo Johnson and it will be a so-called six-point contest, but even if we win out, we still need either one of the group rivals to drop points. And given Ko-oren's form as of late, we will need them to drop many points.

We had hoped to make the World Cup to show everyone that the Dragonflies are back. The early to mid-seventies have been our best years, until finally the Green and Blue made it back to the main stage in World Cup 81 - after having missed five World Cups. The road back to that status was long and rocky, and it seems we're not there completely yet. Still, that's not too bad: out of 24 qualification attempts, we have made the World Cup 10 times, and the Cup of Harmony 9 times. After all that's happened, we still have made the World Cup more often than we've had to rely on the Cup of Harmony - and in our earlier days, before the 70th World Cup, the Cup of Harmony was something to look forward to. It still is, but we've been spoiled by qualifying so often in the last 10 editions.

The goal remains the same: qualify for the World Cup. It would be great to make the Cup of Harmony, and it will be instrumental in preparing our young team for great matches that carry pressure.

There are five rounds left, in which the national team must get at least 9 points - and that's with the other two contenders burning up almost completely. The good news is that we get three home matches from now on, all in guaranteed sell-outs. Santa Teresa has longed for an NT game for a very long time, and now they have it, when Freeport visits. The Stade Amandine will host Bongo Johnson and given the table, we should be ashamed if that one doesn't sell all tickets. The next game is in Maethoru, the only game hosted in any of the capital cities, and it's the revenge game against S&T (earlier result: 3-0 loss).

Ko-oren versus Freeport @ Estádio Fortaleza
Holy Marsh versus Ko-oren
Ko-oren versus Bongo Johnson @ Stade Amandine
Ko-oren versus Siovanija and Teusland @ Rikalathen Arena
Euran Oceania Territories versus Ko-oren

Alan Brogley was given the captain's armband for the last games, and the results haven't been great. We will see if Juliasterinthen gives the honours to a different player, or if Brogley is allowed to try once again. As a minor consolation, it wasn't Brogley's fault that Ko-oren couldn't win the last two games, nor have there been big positioning errors. Our money is on Brogley being the skipper once again - but it's not a 100% chance.

The Census is completed, and we now have updated figures on our subdivisions, cities, towns, and villages. Ko-oren's 12 subdivisions combined contain slightly over 27 million people, most of which live in Surbourneshire, the shire on the southern gulf. The provinces of Gehrenna (central-southwest), Yoshima (eastern islands), and Côte Austral (southern coast of the bay) are home to significant populations too. Each of these subdivisions are home to over three million people - but this should not come as a surprise. These areas have long had the largest number of people. The other subdivisions on the bay, Intermare (northern) and Mayara (western) are next on the list. There are slight population increases for the subdivisions at the bottom of the list: Aerellen (northern islands), Mawryshire (western peninsula) and Sudaefjoll (northeast) all have a higher number now than ever before. West Strand Riding (west coast) and Nordorenfjoll (northeast, north of Sudaefjoll) are also more populated than ever, but remain #11 and #12 on the list with just over half a million inhabitants.

What is new, however, is insight in Ko-oren's cities. The Dragonfly Archipelago is home to three metropolises over one million people: Greencaster, Willowbourne, and Aminey. Nine cities in total have over 500,000 people. There are 42 cities over 100,000. In all, Ko-oren has 318 settlements of over 10,000 people, and these 318 settlements contain 25,358,281 people, or nearly 93% of the population. It needs to be said that many settlements, especially in the 10,000-25,000 range, are made up of multiple towns that share amenities. Locally, these people might name themselves as inhabitants of the separate town. On most maps, only the combined settlement will be named, while on more detailed regional maps, each settlement will be named individually. For instance, the settlement of Crasmere, in western Gehrenna, is listed as having 11,811 inhabitants. In reality, Crasmere has about 7,000 with three more towns adding the remaining 5,000. In other cases, like the 17,395 Tatekawa in northern Yoshima, the entire number comes from the single town of Tatekawa. In any way, this percentage of 93% will be used as the urban population of Ko-oren, as all of the settlements involved have access to vital shared amenities. The remaining 7% is comprised of rural, remote areas.

Now that the Census is out, the first course of action will be for the various public transport organisations of Ko-oren to compare their actual schedules and routes to the newly added settlements on the bottom of the list. After all, each urban area must be serviced by a regional train connection at the very least. With over 750 currently operating train stations, early predictions say that around 100 more stations must be added. In all of these cases, this means that existing train lines will have one extra stop for all-station services. Whether intercity connections will be adjusted has yet to be seen.

<hushed arts television presenter voice>

Hello.

I'm Photius Aygyro, and welcome to It's the Arts.

Tonight, in a special and exclusive Imperial Broadcasting Company event, we bring you the poetry of Holy Empire defender Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings.

Ever since the unfortunate events in Sulsuland earlier in the qualifying campaign, Miss Jennings has been banned from reciting her poetry at Holy Empire qualifying matches out of concerns for the health and well-being of sentient creatures who aren't from the Dreamed Realm.

But tonight, free from the nanny-state clutches of the pettyfogging officials of the World Cup Committee, Miss Jennings will recite her new poem drawing on the events of last night's exciting 4-3 away victory to Quakmybush.

Please note that to protect the delicate sensibilities of beings from outside the Dreamed Realm, the accompanying written transcript of Miss Jennings' poem - which will be submitted in evidence to the WCC ad hoc committee investigating Miss Jennings over alleged crimes against sentience - has been carefully censored so as not to cause death or other forms of harm. Imperial citizens can acquire an uncensored transcript on request.

Tenkyo, Kandorith's hopes were smashed even further after a completely crushing defeat against Equestrian States. Slowly but surely Moriyase's Kandorith seems to be losing all grip on the confidence and the game they played at the start of the qualification games. The 5 - 1 defeat against Equestrian States is one of the largest defeats in Kandorese history and is not making Moriyase's heavily criticized coaching run look any better.

Moriyase's Kandorith is a roller coaster of performances, where the team performs far above expectations one day, only to completely fall apart the next day. Many people are stating Moriyase's coaching style to be the problem, unable to connect with the young players. With the recent defeat all hopes for Kandorith seem to have disappeared, with the fans being vicious against the coaching decisions. After recent polls over half of the people want Moriyase removed as head coach, rather today than after the qualification campaign.

The football association has addressed the fan's concerns and stated it would be unwise to remove Moriyase as coach in the middle of the campaign. The IKFA however did state if the performance does not improve, they will be forced to remove him as head coach after the qualification campaign.

Currently the qualification campaign is one of the worst in Kandorese history, something which does not reflect well upon the world. The team's promise was to be a show of force of the renewed sports associations in Kandorith since the re-installment of the imperial throne, Moriyase's Kandorith however, fails to do so. Currently the team is seeking to regain it's discipline and confidence, which has been lacking throughout the entire campaign.

Anara, Eraman

World Cup qualification is always a process fraught with tripwires. Looking around you can see a wide variety of teams that fell flat on their face; Atlantian giants Starbladyia and Vilita struggling to stay in the conversation for top two in their groups. Surprise first seed Barunia reminding everyone why they were surprised they were a first seed. The normally airtight South Covello letting in a massive half a goal per game and still managing to eat three losses. The Reavers have managed to take their lumps a little more gracefully, remaining unbeaten through twelve games--but five draws still qualifies as a rough run of form for a side of this caliber. Every instance was excusable as an individual result but the broader trend is extremely worrying. There's still a six-point cushion from third, but a vital six-pointer in Melbergia looms on the horizon. It also seems topping the group--something Mriin has done in every qualifier since World Cup 78--seems out of reach, now five points behind an in-form Farfadillis. At least without a major reversal of fortunes for both sides.

The latest draw in that line was an away thriller as many Mrii stepped hoof in Tanah Melayu for the first time. It was quite reminiscent of the first leg, though I was significantly more sober this time around. The Reavers were playing rough and would pay for that very quickly; Maas Halder was given the start to give Reina Kress some rest and managed to give away a penalty in minute nine. Anri Limus calmly converted the golden gift and the Mrii were on the back hoof right away. Don was absolutely livid on the sidelines. Maas has always been a problem player in how careless he can be, but it's a difficult trap to avoid when he’s so effective when giving a damn. Things would quickly improve, however, as the Reavers largely dominated possession going forward and pounded on Mikla Kala’s door. It ended up being Aldo Vocani’s powerful blast that would knock it down to level things up. Not long after an offering from Malia Yonen was just barely batted away by Kala, and in the ensuing corner Solara rose from the chaos for a slam dunk of a goal.

The second half started off uncharacteristically quiet, both seemingly wanting a break from the breakneck antics. But slow and steady is Tali’raia’s specialty, and she turned an innocuous looking probe into a sleek goal in the blink of an eye. Now up two, you’d think the Reavers were in a primo spot to take home all three points, right? Unfortunately, the Eramanians weren’t going to roll over that quickly. It took nearly fifteen minutes of mounting pressure, but in the end Limus couldn’t be stopped as they jinked through Yonen, Wehi’katal, and Maas all in a row before winning the one-on-one with Mara Solaani. The Reavers tried to move forward in search of an insurance goal, as their last meeting ending 4-3 made a 3-2 lead very uneasy, but nothing would come to fruition. Alas, the inevitable came to be. Ariz Wata came on in the eighty-third minute as a fresh set of legs and immediately changed the makeup of the match, shifting the flow back in the Eramanian’s favor and Mara was forced into a flurry of late saves. She did admirably for the situation, but it was a definitely feeling that it was only a matter of time. Wata would be the one to deliver the final blow, an arcing effort from twenty yards out that finally caught Mara off-guard. Injury time passed with just one solitary Vocani shot ending up in the stands, and two points were lost.

Eraman - 3
Limus 9’, 78’
Wata 88'
Mriin - 3
Vocani 29'
Vol 33’
Tali’raia 63’

Turori Back on Track with wins against Bohr, Olastor

Eels Park, Eelandii, Turori :: It wasn't a performance for the ages but it got the job done as the Turori National Team was victorious on the heels of a 40th minute tally by Inamari Altariiz to defeat Bohr 1-0 and keep the pressure on group leaders 95X in the race for Supremacy in Group 10.

From there the Turori National Team would hit the road and head out to Olastor, but for the first time during the campaign it would not be Turori's National Citizen Squad that would make the journey, but Turori's National Cocoabo Squad.

The Cocoabo Squad left directly from the Cocoabo Forest to head to Olastor and would make the best of their opportunity, winning the match 2-0 thanks to goals from Cocoabo #99 and Cocoabo #46 allowing the Turori National Team to slide four points clear of the third position in the group table and adding a little daylight between themselves and the threat of failing to qualify for the World Cup 82 Finals in Valanor and Apox.

The Statto: Who will Survive the Group of Death?

MFO SPORT

Image

World Cup qualifying group 11 has been branded as the group of death by many of it's resident countries, who have compared their experience to being in footballing hell. It is a place where beating the bottom team 4-3 is seen as a decent result and a team that looked like they'd finally settled down and were going to qualify (looking at you Saltstead) got beaten by a team that lost 5 games on the trot earlier in the cycle (looking down at you Mytanija).

In this fiery pit of footballing confusion, two teams will emerge unburnt, if a little shaken by their experiences. Cosumar look to be one of those having opened up a 10 point gap over third-placed Sajnur, but behind that things are more uncertain.

Saltstead are favourites to do so, having a convenient 4 point gap back to Sajnur, but you could throw a hat over the 6 teams behind them. That's a woolly hat, not one of those really big sunhats the size of Cosumar.

Just 3 points separate Sajnur from 8th-placed Qusmo, which means that really anyone could finish third and unfortunately for Mattijana, anyone could also finish eighth. I'm going to hit the statbook to work out who has the best chance of finishing where.

Form:

One of the big factors going into a run-in is form. If you've been winning, you feel like you're going to win, and that means you're more likely to win again than if you feel you're not going to win.
Since the mid-qualifying break, four games have been played by each team. Here's the group based on those matches.

Team W D L GD pts
1: Mytanija 3 0 1 +2 9
2: Kavagrad 2 1 1 +2 7
3: Mattijana 2 1 1 +1 7
4: Velestria 2 0 2 +1 6
5: Saltstead 2 0 2 0 6
6: Sajnur 1 1 2 -1 4
7: Qusmo 1 0 3 -5 3

So as you can see, Mytanija have unfortunately turned their form on its head to lead the form table, their only loss coming to Mattijana. Kavagrad have also fared well, drawing with the Mattijanans and winning two of their other games, whilst Mattijana are not far behind, their only loss coming to Cosumar on matchday 11.
At the other end, these are worrying times for Qusmo. After a decent start, they have won only one of their last four games and have conceded 13 goals in the process, which incredibly, is even more than Mattijana have. Saltstead may also be looking over their shoulder too. Despite holding the crucial second qualifying spot, they have tasted defeat in two of their last four.

Of course in this unpredictable mess of a group, things might change again, but with the Marmots up there, they will hope to steal a good finish.

Fixtures:

Lets be honest, anything could happen within the group of 7 teams in the middle of the group, but a match against Cosumar will probably end in defeat. Equally Vartugia and Alluersia have dropped off the bottom of the pack and will present slightly easier challenges.

One point for each match against the bottom two, minus one for a game against Cosumar. Lets see what each team's run in looks like:

Saltstead: 0 (one game against Cosumar, one against Vartugia)
Sajnur: 0 (one game against Cosumar, one against Vartugia)
Kavagrad: 1 (games against Alluersia, Cosumar and Vartugia)
Mattijana: 1 (game against Alluersia)
Mytanija: 1 (games against Vartugia, Cosumar and Alluersia)
Velestria: 0 (no games against Vartugia, Cosumar or Alluersia)
Qusmo: 2 (games against Vartugia and Alluersia)

So there we have it. Despite Qusmo's woeful form, they have the best chance of picking up results in their final 5 matches. Velestria, Saltstead and Sajnur find themselves with the least favourable fixture lists. Velestria find themselves with the most must-win games against their mid-group rivals whilst Mattijana also have a good looking fixture list.

Fixtures aren't results though, as this group has proven so far.

Verdict:

Saltstead will probably be favourites to go through to the finals, but will be looking nervously over their shoulder due to form wobblier than the Vartugian defensive line and a tricky run-in. Kavagrad, Mytanija and Mattijana are the three best-placed teams to mount a comeback, but a good run may see Velestria stay in the mix as well.

I mean, anything could happen really.

Haywood: Over Her Head?

HAYWOOD: OVER HER HEAD?
Written By: Fox Lewis and Duchess Lewis

god dammit. fuck an intro.

CAROL HAYWOOD
For those that don't know, or don't follow the IAC, it was announced very close to the beginning of the last Independents Association Cup that the previous manager was fired. Michael Starre, who had served DISC and managed the Kick Corps since its inception back in the first Global Cup of Soccer (the World Cup 76 cycle), was unceremoniously dumped on the curb thanks to his failure to qualify for World Cup 81 due to a dismal playoff showing to Saltstead. A five-cycle tenure, especially one with 4 straight qualifications, is nothing to sniff at. However, the complete lack of success once in the World Cup, as well as in the much easier confines of the IAC, was damning enough that the failed qualification for either the World Cup of Cup of Harmony was the straw to break the drawk's back.

Carol Haywood, the successful and cunning manager of the Raikennax Charge in the DLK, was given the nod for the managing position. The Charge have been utterly tearing up the pitches all around Drawkland with a decent roster, so surely giving that manager the best talent our nation has to offer would turn out well, right? You'd certainly think so. After a shaky start to the IAC campaign thanks to administrative and logistical issues, the Corps came out and tore up everyone in their way. Now, nearly every real threat in the IAC this cycle bowed out early before they had to play us, but something still has to be said to Haywood finally breaking the glass ceiling and winning the IAC. Starre never did that.

However, this qualifying cycle has likely proven as a rude awakening to the newbie international manager. Before the campaign began, Haywood jovially remarked that this year we would see "the other side of the coin we flipped last cycle." When she said this, most everyone knew what she meant. The previous cycle had been, far and away, Drawkland's best qualifying cycle. A 14-1-3 record coupled with a +39 goal differential blew all our previous tries out of the water. However, a last-matchday 4-5 loss to Natanians and Nosts blocked Drawkland from automatic qualification, and instead went and played like dogshit against Saltstead in both legs of the playoff, losing 1-2 on aggregate. Still, we have achieved our best output so far.

When Haywood mentioned the other side of the coin, referring to this coming cycle, she likely didn't expect things to take the turn they have. Surely, when she referenced two sides of the coin, she meant that instead of having an amazing qualifying campaign and failing to qualify, we would instead have an amazing campaign followed with a real qualification. Instead, we've been treated to the other side of an uglier coin: we will be having our worst campaign to date followed with a pathetic failure to qualify. Our worst showing in a qualifying campaign was World Cup 78, a 35-point showing on a 16-game schedule. Of course, you could argue the World Cup 80 campaign of 37 points from 18 games is worse, but whatever. With our latest result, it will be literally impossible to match our worst current 18-game campaign, and we'll only be able to tie what we've been able to achieve in a 16-game campaign.

THE PLAY SO FAR
What we've encountered thus far is some of the most disgusting, limp-dick soccer I think I have ever witnessed from any team in Drawkland. The Miloden Witches, fortunately, are from New Drawkia, so I get to leave them out of this comparison (though the Bolabore Anvils home record is ringing some bells). I'm not sure what you could chalk it up to, really. Sure, we're lower-ranked than before, but our players are relatively the same. Sure, we have the new manager, but again, the players are still about the same group. We've qualified from Pot 3 before, hell, even Pot 7.

Perhaps you could even blame the fact that the home games are being spread out across Drawkland, rather than in a single stadium, which is an inconsistent atmosphere. I've heard a lot of people say this and I'm not convinced. Drawkian fans are loyal no matter what and these assholes have been clamoring for NT matches outside the Metro District since World Cup 78. I don't doubt that each stadium was filled to nearly the brim with enough rowdy fans to create a friendly atmosphere for ourselves and unfriendly for our opponents. So what is it?

This is indeed a very controversial topic, but I'll once again mention Carol Haywood. She's appeared frustrated or even bewildered more times than not on the sidelines, and I can't help but shake the feeling she is the one gumming up the works. But what does that really mean? What can we do about it? Surely she's just drowning a little from the pressure and new environment. Maybe (this is my main theory) she's too used to the hyper-offensive Drawkian brand of play and the way more defensive play of Pretty Much Everyone Else is not even close to her wheelhouse. Unfortunately for people already calling for her head, DISC announced back at the IAC that her contract would extend to the postseason of the World Cup 83 cycle and extended if need be. Unless some real shit goes down real soon, I doubt she'll be getting any sort of extension. While the possibility remains that she'll be canned, the winning of IAC 6 will surely be her saving grace that will see her contract through, barring even worse results down the line.

So we're stuck with Haywood from now until (at this rate) Cup of Harmony 75. All we can do now is hope she gets her act together, or start looking for the future. Even if she was booted from the job early, who would we replace her with? Who would we replace her with if her contract expires naturally? That answer is very unclear. We could try looking abroad, but as if the cultural divide of playing styles was bad enough, trying to fit square pegs into round holes would make things worse. Sure, a foreign manager would be more likely to have formations and schemes that will better combat the other nations around the multiverse, but this would be at the expense of limiting our current talent and forcing them into roles they're not used to. Our strikers aren't used to being alone or with one other striker at the front. Our defenders aren't used to being on a back line with 4 or 5 players, etc. I'm not too convinced that's the answer.

Perhaps you could point to other DLK managers, but what good has that been so far? Carol Haywood has been considered the cream of the crop in the DLK, as was Michael Starre. There's only a small handful of truly elite managers that could take up the position and likely not suck ass. Judging by how our most "elite" managers have fared so far, I don't even want to think about how we'd do with our mediocre or shit managers at the helm. Some people have suggested that Ellzidan, considering her preexisting mentor state as a player, as well as her vast experience, could prove to be a good player-manager or even take time off the pitch to manage. I don't know if I'd want to take our all-time leading goalscorer out of the fray, but the idea has some merit in my mind. In the similarly risky and "massively old mythical creature" vein, I've heard chirps about Elstrund, the enormous supposedly sentient and telepathic tree, be the manager. He's already the manager of the aptly-named Elstrund roots, so surely he could manage World Cup play? Probably stupid, but I'll take any sensical idea at this point.

QUALIFICATION CHANCES
All we can really do about Haywood and the Kick Corps' managing future is speculate right now. More importantly, we should be considering our far cry at qualification. While we're certainly in the "totally boned" range of the group table, we are not yet mathematically eliminated. Which, to be fair, when is the last time "well we're not mathematically eliminated yet!" actually panned out and feigned elimination? Exactly. We are currently tied for 3rd in the group - yeah, tied, with Oberour Ar Moro and Lochario. With 29 points, Eura is 9 points ahead of us, and Audioslavia narrowly ahead of them with 30 points. There are currently 5 games remaining in the campaign.

The math is clear. We need to win every game, and Eura needs to lose at least 3. At bare minimum, we need to get 10+the number of points Eura gets. Because at 9 points down, and Eura handily beating us in every goal and H2H category, a tie will do us no good. There's also the Audioslavia option, which would require the Slavs to also drop 9+ points while we don't drop any. Luckily for us, the Audioslavia home tie is still ahead of us, which could do us massive favors. Audioslavia beat us 3-2 when we played them away, but that's not an impossible deficit. While the top tiebreaker is Goal Differential, if we're to qualify, we'll have to win all our games, and they'll have to lose most of theirs, which will solve both problems gradually. Therefore, it may come down to Head-to-Head, however unlikely.

Whether or not it comes to Head-to-Head results or goals, the point remains that the home game versus Audioslavia, the last home game for this cycle, will absolutely be the most important one of the five remaining. Of course, in the heated points battle, every match needs to be a win or more points than the opposition at the very least, but this one could be the difference-maker. Often dubbed "the six point win," winning a match against a team you're in a points battle with is a double-edged sword - while you gain 3 points, your opponent gains zero, which puts you in a much better position. This is exactly what allowed Audioslavia to pull away from us in the first half of the campaign, when they beat us on their home soil.

With the level of play currently showcased by both Audioslavia and Eura, however, them fully dropping 3-5 games is astronomically unlikely. They've dropped points before - this most recent matchday, for example, but our absolutely putrid play has kept us from taking advantage of the slips. When they blink, so do we. It's why we're so deep in this hole in the first place. I'm not going to cover our previous matches, mainly because I don't want to get PTSD flashbacks, but I will shortly preview what else we have left on our plate. Which we'll probably choke on after a couple bites.

First up we have Lochario, a decent team, on the road. Lochario is technically tied with us on points right now, but that's not something we can concern ourselves with. We're trying to somehow accelerate up in the tables, not stave off those below us. In any case though, a win is needed. The first half, we beat them 2-1 at home. A shaky win against lesser competition to be sure, but 3 points nonetheless. I don't like our chances in this game. We've only won one game on the road this season, a 4-0 blowout on Kevagaria, and otherwise we've either lost or drawn. Almost painfully so, the probability for a draw in this game is way too large for my liking. Really there's no point in predicting, because all I want to think about is how we need to win this game and all the rest. There's no room to think about possibilities if we don't get the crucial 3 points every time.

Next is our penultimate home game, this one against Rakivland. It will be held at Oreme Field in Kilnelm. One of the smaller Drawkian venues to be sure, at 115,000, but really a crowd numbers game is too flimsy to use to gauge how a game will turn out. In the first half, we suffered a scoreless draw against Rakivland on the road (the second of three so far. hopefully the second of three total this cycle). This game was the first real stain on our record, but I have no doubts we can take care of the younger team in easy fashion at home. It's too late to not jinx things, so I'm expecting a multi-goal win and possibly a shutout. Because there's nothing else for us to hope for.

Thankfully, besides Audioslavia, all the matches ahead of us are rather easy. Our third opponent, TigerSharkistan, is a perfect example of this. A smashing 3-0 win at home was how our last meeting went, so even on the road I'm confident we can pull it out. TigerSharkistan is the weakest in the group rank-wise, but they've put together a decent cycle so far. Hopefully we can put an end to their luck and come away with a win on the road to keep us in contention. By the end of this game, the writing on the wall should be clear. After this match only two will remain, and thus it will be easy to calculate our remaining chances of qualification. Remember, Audioslavia and/or Eura (both would be nice) need to drop 3 games, and if they haven't dropped any by this matchday, all is for naught, even if we win out. So while we may be flying high with a third straight win, the much more crucial factors may finally be laid to rest by now.

As mentioned before, our match with Audioslavia is both our last home game and penultimate game of the cycle. If the results come in after MD 16 and we still have a chance, this game will have immense pressure with it. Even if we are eliminated by now, this would be the perfect time to piss in the Audios' cheerios and at least leave a mark to remember before the cycle is over. That, or we'll be assblasted by the Bulls at home as a big fat middle finger to our qualifying cycle. In any case, our saving grace is our performance against Audioslavia on the road. Despite losing 3-2, the match was competitive for all 90 minutes, and if it weren't for a near last-second goal by Audioslavia, we could've come out of Arena Kirola with a point. So, assuming the worst doesn't happen and we totally collapse, I believe we have a reasonable shot at beating Audioslavia and getting a crucial "six" point win.

Indeed, if we beat Audioslavia (which we'll have to), we'll only have to pray they lose two more games to give us a chance. Luckily for us, Audioslavia and Eura still have to play their second tie (Audioslavia at home), which could easily play in our favor. One of those teams has to lose, or at least tie. If, for example, Eura comes away with the win, and we beat the Bulls, we only have to pray for another upset or two. On the other hand, beating Eura would give us a better shot. At this point we'll accept anything that gives us a chance.

Finally, we have an away match against San Rocca. We defeated San Rocca 4-3 at home, so an away upset is surely possible. Remember, last cycle we had qualification virtually sewn up before we lost 5-4 on the road to Natanians and Nosts which ripped the threads apart and sent us packing to the playoffs. We had even beaten the Nosts 2-0 at home in the first half. So, we know anything can happen, even to the weakest opponents, on the road. However, our record for "last-matchday games we need to win and pray another team loses so we advance" is currently sitting at 2-0. If you're wondering, our "just don't lose so you can hold serve and secure qualification you fucking morons" game record is 1-1.

Is it impossible? No. Is it improbable? Uh, yeah. Especially with how awfully we've been playing. But only time, and the game results, can tell us who'll be packing the bags for Valanora and Apox and who'll be packing the bags for Mriin and Cosumar. If we even get that far.

CUP OF HARMONY?
Some may ask why we didn't reach the Cup of Harmony last cycle. Well, we certainly haven't reported on The Incident, mainly because coverage for that cup was rather limited due to administrative reasons, but we didn't touch on it afterwards because, jesus christ, we were all heated here at the office. Of course, we're supposed to remain "professional" and "unbiased," but we generally throw that out the window for entertainment value. But I don't think anyone could've covered that in good faith here. You can find a good account of the event here.

The short answer is that we were sanctioned out of the Cup of Harmony. Actually, they were self-imposed sanctions, which everyone hates DISC for right now, but that's all semantics. Essentially, we got screwed in the playoff game and the fans got mad. As in, the second leg of the playoff was at home, and when we lost the game the stadium descended into absolute chaos. As soon as Saltstead scored the damning goal that put the nail in the coffin, fans were already throwing and shooting debris onto the field. By the time the final whistle blew, most fans were furious to the point of boiling over. A majority of the lower bowl in Drawk City Stadium was emptied as hordes of pissed off fans descended onto the pitch. The end result ... wasn't pretty.

Most Saltsteadish players managed to get through the tunnel before the ugliness ensued but a few were caught in the mess. Several Drawkian players, most notably Lana Harmony (ironically), also sustained injuries from rabid fans. A few Drawkian players, namely Ellzidan, Foss, Talla, and Arrowsword managed to dispel things around the caught up Saltstead players, but it would be seemingly an eternity before law enforcement and security were able to curtail the bedlam. As you can imagine, this didn't cast a good reflection on Drawkland or the Corps, and especially its fans. Of course, having a devoted and loyal fanbase is good, but not when it turns ugly such as this.

In any case, our chances of qualifying are totally fucked at this point, and our beautiful streak already broken, so I doubt such violence will occur this time around. Thus, I doubt sanctions or other big issues will be inhibiting our ability to qualify for an invitation for the Cup of Harmony. There's still a big chance we're left out, especially with how little effort and real play our players have seemed to be giving. There's still a reasonable chance we won't even get third in this group, much less a desperate last shout to qualify. This sort of futility and apparent apathy at the situation could likely be enough to count us out of the Cup which was founded on the principles of good faith and effort.

No matter how you spin it, everything is still way in the air. There's probably an equal chance of all three events ... qualifying for the World Cup, qualifying for the Cup of Harmony, or just leaving completely empty-handed. Well, the probabilities probably aren't equal, but they're all still reasonably in the realm of possibility. In the end, all we can really say here is good luck and for the love of God, don't embarrass us again please. Rather reluctantly ... On Corps.

Absolute scenes in Brusseldorf as Los Alrededores trump Eastfield Lodge 5-2

Football fervour has taken hold as a refreshed Brusseldorfen side trounced Eastfield Lodge. Craig Foster's decision to rest the main team during the game against Dritten Asopie has paid off, with the team well-rested and re-energised to face Eastfield at home. The goals flowed at the Fennec Stadia, with Ximenez and Dessler netting a double, and Boronia scoring a penalty in the 89th minute to seal the deal. Golazo had a brief interview with manager Craig Foster, who had this to say about the match:

"You know, I'm so pleased. I Dessler isn't particularly known for his finishing but he'll be happy with the two that he put away, and I think it just shows the depth of talent in the squad. Moreover I'm thrilled for Boronia. I told you we had to show faith in him, so I put him on against Dritten Asopie but he couldn't make the magic happen. I think he proved a lot of naysayers wrong tonight, and he really highlights the ethos of this team. We were 4-2 up at the close but he wanted another, and I that really shows promise in an attacking side. I think he'll sleep well tonight *laughs*. He's had a big few days so he deserves it. I'm very proud of him and I'm proud of the team as a whole. Andrea was another standout on the night, she did brilliantly on her return and it's great to have her back. From here we look forward to the match against Sulsuland, here's hoping they have figured out their naming system *laughs* I'm sure it will be another entertaining match."

Excerpt from the Australialia Cataclysm

Chapter Two
The Captain and his men had been travelling in the two APCs for 6 hours. He gave the Commanders the signal to stop.
They set up camp and tucked into some lunch. Something wasn’t sitting right with the Captain, though. The radar in the APC had constantly been pinging with contacts, yet they would come across the point to find nothing but more desert, more dunes, more sand.
The APCs automatic defence systems had also been going haywire the entire trip, as if some ordnance was about to appear over the horizon. The electrical engineers had confirmed that nothing wrong was faulty with the APCs, suggesting some strange interference or signals instead.
At least it had kept his men on guard.
The Captain tucked into his MRE. Chicken. Nice. The chaff on both APCs went off again, showering the eating men in smoke and flares. No one gave a damn.

Back in Brusseldorf, a storm was brewing.

Double Bill

THRILLING WIN
Osarius 2-4 New Lusitania
Osarius FA Stadion (Att:.?)

Back from a win, the Selecção traveled to Osarius hoping to get some form. Patríce returned to goal, Coentro, Cancela and Cédric in defence, Nevais further up with Fernando in central midfield with Mário and Veiga on the flanks with Jota, Silveira and Henrique Costa. The game commenced and the ball was running as the Selecção went for an attack straight away. Although it came fruitless, the goal didn't come that late, as by the twentieth minute, New Lusitania had managed to put the ball in the net. Mário had managed to cross the ball into the target man, Silveira volleying it in. The official had given two added minutes to the first half and New Lusitania were in a corner situation, with Costa the one in the corner, as fox-in-the-box Jota managed to head it in with style. In the second half, Mário was involved in yet another assist as he put the ball in towards the goal, but as it hit the bar, it landed on Fernando, who on the rebound, put it in the back of the net, surprisingly his first goal as he hadn't been so upfront in this cycle. Osarius managed to pull one back before the hour mark, as they created an attack based on a good team effort ending on a goal that was impossible to save in a three to one situation. New Lusitania buried Osarius' high hopes with Nevais hoofing the ball upfield towards Veiga who controlled the ball perfectly to score his second in two games. At the very end of the match Osarius won a free-kick in close range that was expertly taken, but it was already too late as the away side celebrated the three points they'd take home. FULL TIME: 2-4

DEFEAT IN ANDALUZIA COMPLICATES SITUATION
New Lusitania 1-2 Baranil
Estádio de Nervião, Sevilha (Att: 53, 522)

Baranil was welcomed to Andaluzia as New Lusitania hosted the game in Seville. Only one change for the home side, Guerreiros' return to the left wing back position. Fully charged and ready to go, he was involved in New Lusitania's goal, being the one that crossed it in after passing the ball to Mário and running behind him, leading to recieving it back. The ball found its' way to Fernando which could enjoy freedom of movement again tactically and thus scoring a good tap-in. It would all be downhill from there however as Carriça, who came in in the second half, caused the first away goal, so easily prevented. In the last seven minutes of play, the travelling side struck again, a powerful shot into the top left corner of the net, which sent them back where they came from with the full three points. FULL TIME: 1-2

(OOC: Isaac, Prince Imperial namedropped with AIF's gracious permission; this is a ripoff of the opening of Richard III.)

Marlon had scored the only goal, and some of the players were looking dispirited. Once again, Tsereteli had foregone any funny soundbytes to the press.

"It's okay," said Lucas. "Our luck is turning. I can feel it."

"No it's not," said Subroto, "and even if it was, how can you feel it?"

"It's like...it's summer. The snow is gone, warmth is here, bringing the winds of change."

"Well, yeah," said Martin, "they don't play a lot of international football in the snow."

"Maybe they should," said Joshua. "Might give us a leg up."

"Haven't any of you read The Soliloquy of Isaac, Prince Imperial?" Lucas asked.

"Oh, nooooo," said Kendra. "No, we are not going down this road--"

"He wrote it after the Holy Empire had come out of a slump, it's a classic."

"I'm sure it is, but seriously--"

"Isn't he the guy whose bones they just dug up?" Ione asked. "In Starling, right before their team got good out of nowhere?"

"Uh, I don't think so," said Lucas, "he's still alive as far as I know, the Holy Empire are weird like that. Also he's not Nepharim."

"Huh," she said. "I'm thinking of someone else then."

"Right," said Lucas.

Now is the summer to show forth content
And win glory beneath the sun of fate.
For all the clouds that o'er the mountains loomed
Have cast down snow, and wait to send the rain.
Now do we quest to wave victorious flags,
Our arms unused (except for a few kooks),
Our stern feet race to every merry stadium,
Our dreadful anthem stirs delighted fans.
Bitter defeat has masked her ancient face
And now, instead of catching local trains
To pierce our souls, as do our adversaries,
She brightly flirts with other slumping squads
To the droning of their fans' boos and jeers.
So I, who am a fan of sporting tricks
And look to receive every drifting pass;
I, who am often capped, and in my element
Strutting upon an endless verdant field,
I, who have drawn up fair formations,
Accused of cheating by dissembling opponents,
By biased refs sent off before my time
Into the tunnel ere the second half
I, wearing kits so unfashionable
Designers shield their eyes as I walk by:
Thus, I, in these clutch days of qualifiers
Have no delight for losses or of draws
Unless to draw my lovely silhouette
Under the bright sun of the field of play.
Whe need have I for flirting or for lovers?
I entertain these loyal, well-read fans;
I am avowed to prove a champion
And spurn the simple fancies that distract.
Goals shall I score, assists enumerate
By runs inspired, home, away, in dreams.
And so my tireless captain and the coach
Shall egos stroke, the one against the other.
And if our coach be as quiet and meek
As I am brazen, loud, and loquacious,
Our captain's clipboard shall be full of doodles
That lead us on to hoist the "W,"
Of all the teams, we champions shall be.
Sit, thoughts, within my soul--the captain speaks.

"The captain speaks," said Kendra, "and she says no Imperial poetry in the clubhouse."

"If you're worried I'll get funny ideas, don't," said Shobhana, not looking up. "Like, even this guy thinks I'm a kook, you'd probably be friends."

SOUTHAMPSHIRE — Things are looking different in Southampshire as Velestria looks to prepare for a big match against 59th ranked Mattijana in what could very swell promote Velestria into the top five in the dreaded and atrocious Group 11 of World Cup qualifiers for Apox & Valanora 82 which looks like a bloodbath for the second spot. It looks as if a fresh manager for the national team has really brought a new form to the team, something different that wasn’t there or was missing during the tenure of Christopher Tajo Mendez, and under new manager, Jane Gullie the theme seems to be a rising notion for the national team as al gryzhon look to rectify their image for the national team. Coming of a defensive-breeding 1-nil victory over unknowns Alluersia, Velestria looks to take on Mattijana who last time around they snuck three points away despite Mattijanian pundits claiming that Mattijana’s national team would be able to easily take away six points from a Velish team that at the time was just returning from an international ban on football. Things now of course are a lot different, even though it’s been separated by only a few matchdays, being ten matchdays ago, and it has me thinking — man, how is this team so different only ten games since the victory? Players and the manager, Jane Gullie who guided her native Schottia to two World Cup finals back in her day with the Schottia national team insist nothing has changed and the approach will be the exact same to the Alluersia game, Gullie to the press, “we cannot afford to drop points and we must approach this game as we approached the game before that, this is a different team, a different rank and a completely different side, we’re the underdogs and we need to perform and ruin the party for against an Esportivan side”, said Gullie speaking to the media during a training session ahead of Wednesday’s clash with fellow Esportivan football side, Mattijana.

“The way Alluersia plays is completely different from the approach we expect from Myantija”, Furusawa Utamara spoke to the media during a training session this week in Birnin Calix at Blue Strike Arena, the region is known for its problems with both the Velish national team and also the Velish Football Association which surprised as the VFA went ahead to host the pre-match warmups here rather than in Southampshire, the practices were open to the public. “They [Alluersia] play a weird 2-4-4, they’re very offensive focused and its credit to us and Jane’s amazing tactics that we stayed in the match for most of the game, their approach really differs from what we’re going to see from Mattijana next week. So, I’m sure a lot of us watched what Mattijana did last night, I think like us they set up in an offensive-centered 4-2-3-1, so we’re going to have to make big adjustments and figure out how we want to penetrate a 4-in-the-back lineup, I think last game we found that we really need to rely on our wings to get that extra space because space is going to be very important for gaining shots in this match.” He also released a bunch of other comments, praising Gullie for her style of contact and the new energy she’s brought to the national team. Midfielder, Na’ore Sa’kiera who scored the winning and only goal against 250th ranked Alluersia remarked on the upcoming game and the problems Mattijana posed, she also spoke on al gyzhon and the problems the team still faced that it was trying to get together, mainly focusing on foreign-based players to home-based played and Jane Gullie inheriting Christopher Tajo Mendez’s selected lineup, not her personal picks. “Playing against Alluersia was not easy, they play a high possession game and we rely on the counterattack, and now we only have maybe two or three fays to prepare for a big challenge from Myantija it what good very well help our chances or jettison our chances of qualifying for the World Cup, it’s important we find a way to get it done, with any way possible”, he explained in Old Vylez to Velish media. He also agreed on the teams philosophies, “Velestria and Mattijana are going to be staring at each other and thinking, ‘damn we can do that better!’, and its going to show throughout the match that the two formations balance off one another, but its important that we learn the kay attributes of the opponents and how we can take advantage of opposing teams and put us in the best possible place to qualify for the World Cup.”

But perhaps more important was the big announcement from Jane Gullie — Reden Omar the Velish 18 year old prospect playing in Banija had been called up to the national team and would receive his first cap against Myantija, when asked by the media what he wants the nations of the world to think of Velstria’s national team, he didn’t mince words, “I want this team to be a true force, not just an underdog slayer, we need to be the best and I’m here with Ms. Gullie here to help ensure that that happens.” It’s good to remember that Omar is the latest in wunderkids that have graced the national team and is the new “big thing” in the midfield, in which Velestria has become an ear for talent in producing, Yellis Eugene perhaps the most known Velestrian player in history who also made the Equestar 80 WCQ team of the tournament and the young Furusawa Utamara who now plies his trade in Darmen herald the class of midfielders which Velestria produces, a class above the rest. But Velestria is known for producing one-player wonders on shit teams, this bring to mind the WC79 qualifiers cycle, erm…the first half of the WC80 cycle, but now it seems he VFA and Omar…and maybe Gullie too want to flip this narrative. “Yes we want to be the team that never gives up”, said Chris Banker, national team netminder who plies his trade domestically with Peachtree City F.C., “but we also want to be that team on the rise, look at Qusmo, in short time they’ve shot up to 40 in the world, we want to aspire to be great, to get to the top and we’re ready to change the face of international football in Velestria.”

Chris Goddard who at 31 is not associated with the Kid Brigade which Gullie has established for the team to build around and has been around the national team for the past fifteen years since setting up shot under the leadership of the short-lived manager of Conley Goddard let his feelings be felt on the status of the direction of the national team under Gullie. “Its something different and its nice, no longer is it ‘help the star’ message that really prevented the team from reaching its full potential, it seems to be spread out evenly amongst all the players, something that I for one very much prefer over the other alternatives, she [Gullie] seems to have found one, concrete thing that works for this team, a vision that we can easily adopt to and manage to work with, it really looks as if Jane’s made herself larger than live and figured out how to adjust this team day to day in its games.” And albeit, the only result we’ve seen from Gullie has been thus far fine, Velestria was expected to win against Alluersia, and although some will argue that Velestria should’ve stacked the scoreboard against Alluersia if you watched the game you’ll see that the national team looked fine and al gyzhon clearly as the match wore on fit into their natural mold and really looked like the best team out on the pitch. Of course, Gullie said she wants her mission to take place first and a few losses are guaranteed to happen for the national team to fully grow into the likeliness she envisions, “everything comes with time”, she told the media after the victory against Alluersia. “It’s really hard to judge what can be done in one game, there’s still a lot this team has to improve on and we have five games to the end of World Cup qualification to slowly implement the system in envisioned for Velestrian football.”

But look that’s the big thing, there’s five games left in World Cup qualification and while its highly unlikely there can certainly be optimism available that Velestria can finish through the final five games taking eight out of the fifteen available points from the remaining teams it faces, of course it’s going to be a harsh long haul but the Velestrian team has the confidence and poise to get it done. Said Haroni Beaver who plays in neighboring Ethane for Letson Town, “it’s the little things that Jane emphasizes that’s going to help this team, her spirit is clearly effect this national team and I continue to like what I see from her, her vision is just…untouched, unimagined, she just gets it. She has a vision for the game, probably from her time at delivering championship after championship with Handon United, but she know what she’s doing and that’s very good for the national team.” The important part of this seems to be that Jane Gullie’s message is seeping through the heads of the national team and next Wednesday night, she has a chance to become the first manager of the Velish national team to start her tenure 2-0, and while that may seem small and insignificant, that’s baby steps for the organization looking to rebuild and slowly get the team back to the top, a lot is left for the Velish national team and things are going well currently.

Speller Relieved of Starting Keeper Role,
by Chelsea Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

After surrendering nine goals in her last two games, 33-year old Kristen Speller, a long term staple at the goalkeeping position has been relieved of her starting duties, and will be replaced by substitute Kelsey Morgan. Speller will now be the second string keeper. While Morgan has had an occasional starting assignment in World Cup qualifying in the past, though starts have come with the understanding that it was just the odd opportunity, and that Speller was still the go-to keeper for Cassadaigua, as she has been since World Cup 79. Now, for the first time, Speller has been advised that the starting job officially belongs to Kelsey Morgan now. Coach Stephanie Sweeney realizes that stability at this position is essential and told reporters that she hoped that Speller would recover from her tough outing against Starblaydia. “The game against Starblaydia was tough. They are turning it on now, and we did not match up to them, but it didn’t help that some shots could have been stopped that weren’t stopped. I hoped she would rebound, because she has been like that, but after allowing another four goals against Filindostan, I have to make this move. It’s tough, but I know Kelsey will do a fine job.”

Kristen Speller took the news very well in her comments about the move. “We all have to put the team and our country first. It has been a privilege to be the starting keeper for such a long time, but right now, I do realize that I have not been playing my best. I have to get it figured out, but World Cup qualifying is not the time to do that. Kelsey has been such a great keeper, and this is her chance now. She has my support, I am not worried about this as far as my own career is concerned, we are a team, and we must all come together and be strong.” Kelsey Morgan said of the move, “This is what I have been waiting for. I’ve had some games, but now to be told that I am officially number one, that is goal, and I can’t wait to go out there. Kristen, to her credit, has been incredibly supportive of me, even now, and I couldn’t do this without her.”

Also note that Lupe Enriquez and Hannah Shanley, both defenders, will not play for the next two games, at least, due to their own recent ineffectiveness. Matthew Donegal and Brooke Sorrentino will get the starting nods. There are no changes to the midfield or the forwards coming up, because let’s face it, they’re not the problem right now. In fact, they are playing exceptionally well.

The team is really beginning to frustrate. Now, since that 4-0-0 start, the team is only 3-5-1 in their last nine. The only reason they are still tied for first is because Starblaydia and Filindostan each had their own rough patch at one point during qualifying. In theory, Cassadaigua should have a friendly schedule down the stretch, but when you’ve only won three of your last nine, you’re the easy game for the opponent unless you step it up yourself.

Equestrian superstar nets hat trick in Ponies' rout of Kandorith

EVERFREE - After missing several games with a leg injury, Pristina Shine returned to the starting lineup last night for the Ponies and quickly reminded the everyone why she is frequently considered among the multiverse's best active hoofballers. It took the unicorn forward just four minutes to make an impact, firing home from just outside the box to give the Equestrians an early 1-0 advantage. The raucous atmosphere at Everfree's famous Wild Grounds must have gotten into the heads of the visiting Kandorese, as Elaine Everdeen was left unmarked three minutes later and doubled the Ponies' lead. Pristina Shine scored again before the half-hour mark, heading an Apple Cobbler cross past goalkeeper Hideyo Kiyotada; and Sparrow Body made it 4-0 just over ten minutes later, giving the Equestrians the chance to comfortably play out the second half. Pristina Shine completed her hat trick in the 68th minute, although Lunar Shadow did most of the work before selflessly playing the ball over to the wide open striker. Kandorese forward Masada Katano spoiled the Ponies' clean sheet with just over ten minutes to go, but it was little more than a consolation prize for the visitors as they rarely looked capable of hanging with an Equestrian team that has rebounded well from a sloppy run of form earlier in the campaign.

As the Ponies were cruising past Kandorith to an easy victory, group leaders Lisander were stumbling to a dismal 1-0 loss against an underwhelming Indussan side, narrowing the gap between the Equestrians and Lisanderians to a single point. As such, the Equestrians will have the opportunity to retake the top spot in Group 15 with a win next week in Lisander. Although winning the group would carry no significant benefit for the Ponies, it would represent a statement of intent for a team which has expressed their belief that they are a legitimate title contender in the World Cup.

MATHEMATICALLY, it may yet be possible for Krytenia to qualify for the World Cup. Pragmatically, though, the game is up for the Dragons as Mercedini proved a step too far. This was far from the humiliation of earlier in qualifying, but if anything, it hurt more, as the result leaves Krytenia eight points from the top two in Group Fifteen.

It would be easy to blame individuals for this result, but in all honestly that wouldn't be fair. Everyone, from goalkeeper Marcus Washington to striker Chris Naismith, gave their all in a game that was hard-fought on both sides. When it came down to it, though, Mercedini had just that little edge over their opponents, and it proved to be enough.

The visitors certainly didn't have it easy. The back four, knowing the danger of allowing Daniel Dostalok and Ben Chillotov room from their previous encounter, kept the Golden Eagles' front two on a short leash in the first half, denying either man too much space. Mercedini, though, were not to be denied a goal they thoroughly deserved, and they got it through a fine passing sequence that stretched the Dragons' defence and ended with Ross Presic sliding the ball under Washington.

Both sides had their chances throughout the game. Naismith was unlucky with a thumping volley that clipped the top of the crossbar, Matthew Gray had a header cleared off the line from a corner, and Dostalok produced a couple of fine saves from Washington. Eventually, though, one of them had to go in, and it needed a bit of good fortune as Joshua Coquelin's speculative effort clipped the outstretched leg of Liam Toivonen, the deflection enough to deceive an unlucky Daniel Hosset.

The dagger, though, came just three minutes from time. Mercedini, their lead having vanished, pressed for a winner, with Chillotov arrowing a shot to the top corner which Washington barely managed to tip round the post. The resulting corner saw Toivonen atone for his earlier bad luck, evading his marker and nodding home to send the visiting fans into rapture.

The honeymoon period, then, ends here for Alexander Sampson and his charges. Reality is a harsh mistress, but hopefully the defeat won't have too negative an effect on the national team. As previously mentioned, qualificiation is still a possibility (albeit a diminishingly small one) and even then, form cannont be understated heading into what is now likely to be a Cup of Harmony campaign. The shoots are there; Sampson needs to nurture them. Onward!

The Red Wagon: Decay

Josh Etten didn't know what happened to him, after everything went black. When the pain subsided, he opened his eyes to see that he was in a white room. He sat up in the hospital bed, as he looked around. After he must have had that heart attack, they must have found him and took him in for check-ups. Calling a nurse, a doctor arrived knowing that Josh has woken up. "Ah. Mr. Etten. I see that you have recovered from your cardiac arrest." the doctor said, checking his clipboard and scratching a place of his cheek that was covered with a medical mask. "What happened? Where's Don?" Josh asked, feeling his chest, as he was wearing a gown. "Mr. Etten. May I, at least, try to ask you a couple of questions-"

"No! Where's Don!" Josh immediately demanded, wondering if he died. "Mr. Etten. Your friend Don was found in his house near where you had your heart attack. He's currently in a coma from what has happened. They found large amounts of traces of shellfish in my system, along with what appeared to be sleeping pills. You happened to know anything about this?" the doctor asked him. "Uhhh..I didn't realize he was allergic to fish?" Josh made a lie. "Well, they found him on top of his shattered coffee table. We getting him in a stable condition, but the readings are bad. Speaking of which.."

"How are my readings?"
"Mr. Etten. You're an average fit man with no health conditions. Yet, it was extremely unusual for you to develop cardiac arrest. Your heart appeared to have stopped immediately without warning. Had the paramedics arrive a bit late, you would have suffered permanent brain damage." Etten's doctor remarked. "You been taking any medication? Or been doing any recent habits? It could expect your condition."
"I'm fine, Doc. I don't need any medicine or shit. I'm fine." Josh said, getting up from his bed.
"But Mr. Etten-"
"Don't call me Etten! I told you I'm fine! I don't need you white suits to waste my time on this!" Josh said, looking for his clothes.
"Ehh.. Mr..Josh. We just need to conduct some more tests to make sure that your cardiac arrest isn't related to any other symptoms."
"I'm healthy! End of story!" Josh yelled, as he immediately marched out of the hospital room, nearly knocking over Henry, who had to attend to the hospital to get his ankle treated.

While checking the hospital, he managed to explain to the receptionist at the front desk that he was a friend of Don, where he found his hospital room on the other wing. Entering his room, he saw that some of Don's other friends had given him gifts, including some get well cards and some gifts. Josh spied on what appeared to be a stack of Azerty comic books on the bedside near the IV stand. Josh, seeing how he believed that since Don was comatose, decided to take the comic books for himself. "You probably don't even need any of this kid's stuff at all." Josh remarked hypocritically.

Back at Don's house, Josh convinced the cleaners that he was keeping an eye on Don's house, while he was gone, where he made sure that he had the almanac with him. A couple of match days later, Josh was managing to get some interest towards him. Some had beyond to see him as a guru. Which gave him an idea of an unlikely scheme. He thought about being a self-help guru towards some people, where he can enjoy the fame of his methods and have people do his bidding for his comfort. However, the girl in the red wagon was still sick of his total arrogance and lack of sense of right and wrong, had another trick up her sleeve for the sake of having Josh feel suffering.

While Josh was eating a meal at the dining table, he bit into a piece of meat, where he said something fall out and hit the plate. Looking at what landed, Josh picked up what looked like a seed, when he suddenly realized that he still wasn't safe. A human tooth that he had in his fingers. Josh got up from his chair and ran to the bathroom to check himself in the mirror. Checking his gums, he was surprised to see that they had gone black and his teeth were starting to turn yellow and loose. "No..!"
"NO!!!!" Josh screamed, as his teeth started to fall out from his mouth.

Yes, the Condottieri CAN still qualify...

...AND Damukuni loses all five of their remaining matches (@ Siovanija & Teusland, vs E.O.T., @ Libonesia, vs Ethane, @ Spokane)

...AND Ko-oren earns no more than 4 points from their five remaining matches (vs Freeport, @ Holy Marsh, vs Bongo Johnson, vs Siovanija & Teusland, @ E.O.T)

...AND Ethane earns no more than 6 points from their five remaining matches (@ Libonesia, @ Bongo Johnson, vs Spokane, @ Damukuni, vs Freeport)

...AND Spokane earns no more than 12 points from their five remaining matches (@ E.O.T., vs Libonesia, @ Ethane, @ Bongo Johnson, vs Damukuni)

...AND Freeport finishes with a better goal difference than all teams which may end up tied for the second and final Group 5 qualifying berth on 27 points

...Then, yeah, the Condottieri can still qualify for the World Cup

Four years ago

A bright light enveloped the room. Valdman's peripheral's were drowned out by the glare. He had nowhere to look that didn't strain his sight. The discomfort was prolonged for several minutes as he sat in a hard iron chair, on his own in this small and disorientating space. In time someone entered and the lights dimmed down to a normal level. 'Look up.' When he didn't respond to the order, a guard pulled up his chin to check he was awake. Valdman gave the guard a defiant little smile, a small victory, one he'd need to savour. The guard was joined by a younger woman wearing office wear. She couldn't be a guard so what was she? Valdman tried to work her out. No luck. She didn't look his way and was silent for at least half a minute. This gave him some time to summon up courage. He told himself, assured himself, that he would never talk. 'Does he need a translator?'
'No, he's responded to all voice commands we have given him.'
'Ok, thank you officer. That will be all.'
'Ma'am.' The stocky guard took the signal to depart, leaving just Valdman and what would appear to be his interrogator in the room.

She clicked a button on some kind of touchscreen on the desk the captured Savojar was facing. It was a recorder of some kind. She read out something for the tape about the time and date. Valdman tuned out and braced his mind. He'd worked out by now that the bright lights had to be some kind of psychological tactic. '...interviewee unidentified. Beginning interview.' She cleared her throat and clicked a pen that had been brought out from her chest pocket. With great care she opened up a moleskin notebook to write in. Still Valdman wasn't able to judge what kind of interrogator this was. 'What is your name?' It didn't matter. Silence was golden. 'What is your name?' He said nothing. 'What is your date of birth?' Where are you from?' He wouldn't give an inch. 'Are you able to explain why you were among a group of armed men within a combat area? Have you currently or previously been employed by or served under the Sameban Republican Army, Air Force, Naval Forces or Republican Guard?' This seemed pretty easy. She wasn't getting anything and could only make a small note that he couldn't read. For a few minutes, both of them sat in complete silence.

The longer it went on the more Valdman was left unnerved by the silence. This had to be some kind of interrogation technique but he didn't get it. It wasn't intimidating, it was just strange, but it could have been that this was the point. Her gaze was captured momentarily by an alert on the small screen, after which she got up to leave without a word. Sitting by himself he began to drift mentally. He wondered what had become of most of the rest of the men of the Gustav Karl Janssons Brigade. They could be captured themselves, or dead, or maybe they really had made it to link up with the Savut. She came back in and sat down without saying anything for a good while, until the tension hung in the air tighter than a steel cable. 'I know you probably think you are being stoic but the truth is, as you well know, you weren't the only one of your group to be taken alive. That means I will get at least some information out of your group. You are Savojar, yes?' Valdman's hairs stood up on end as he fought hard to resist the urge to flinch. He would not be drawn into talking that easily. 'That's fine. If you want it to be like that it can be. But please do realise now that the longer you go without helping us, the less reason we will have to be lenient on you when one of the others beats you to telling us what we want to know.' What she had said definitely resonated as logical with Valdman. He didn't want to admit it but his comrades were limited in their bravery and ability to withstand pressure. Nevertheless he would not talk.

Over the next hour the interrogator took him on a verbal tour of every possible useful question that could have been asked. He did not speak once. She was provided with photos from the drones and helicopters showing group members. These were used to ask him to ID his comrades. But the Euran's would have no luck with Valdman. Unfortunately for him his countrymen had not all withstood the Euran's inquests so well. He was also about to learn that the LKPS had not been as thorough in covering the team's tracks as he'd thought. 'Look at this photograph. It was taken three months ago. Do you recognise the men in the picture?' This could not end well. he thought to himself. He cursed Halvorsen for getting them into this mess with his idea for where to go next. It was unmistakable, clear as day footage of himself and Jensen in a place and at a time where their intentions were obvious, right after entering Sameba by sea. 'Now, we'll have to wait and see if you're going to co-operate, but we are learning a lot more about your friend here. We know his name.' Valdman's veneer of discipline slipped. 'No you don't.'
'Ulrich Jensen.' Fuck! 'Do not underestimate the eyes and ears of the Euran state. We only needed one of you. Your militia's operations are quite troubling to us. We don't have everything we need to know, not yet, but we will do, and when we do we are going to come down hard on every single one of you. Unless you can persuade us to do otherwise. How about you start slowly? A place of birth?' The interrogator smiled politely like she was asking for her prisoner to sign up to a charity drive. It was unnerving in the extreme.

Valdman couldn't sum up the courage to resist saying anything forever but right now his defiant instincts were carrying him through. 'No. Bitch.' She laughed. 'Come on now, you'll have to do better than that. I'm going to leave this book here and you're going to write down anything that comes to mind. Use whichever tongue makes you most comfortable. I'll be back later.' She left and the moleskin book rested on the table. He gave in to temptation and spun it round, opening it up to read the note she'd made early in the interview when he was totally disengaged. It read, 'Type C. Will look.' For a moment he did the mental arithmetic on what that meant, then felt immensely stupid. She knew he'd read it. There was a mirror on the wall that was no doubt a disguised viewing window. It irritated him to know that she was on the other side, glad to have got the better of him. After he'd been left there to stew for a little while longer a small group entered the room. These were military police officers, joined by a weedy looking man in a gray suit who pulled up a chair next to Valdman, taking a pew next to him awkwardly.

As the men opposite arranged themselves and got out some documentation, the suited one turned to Valdman. 'Hello there, Mr...well, you won't say. Let me know later eh?' Valdman couldn't help but ask. 'Who are you?'
'Your lawyer. You have them too over there right? I don't know what kind of communists you guys are. Anyway, welcome to the free world, huh friend? Don't worry too much but they're not paying a lot to give you your mandatory defence counsel!' It was clear now - this was the formal arrest that had not taken place on the battlefield. Valdman was read his rights. Apparently, under Article 19 of the Defence of the Federation Act, he was being detained without need for a trial for a hundred days, pending charges of "insurgency, terrorism, looting, subversion and illegal possession of illegal weaponry". He was left with no doubt by his captors that the actual sentence was going to be a lot longer. All that could help him now would be a direct intervention by the Savojar government. With Eura's war ongoing Savojarna's government had to be careful about how far they took their unwelcomed intervention in the war. The Leninist's were not hugely missed either, meaning any help from the state was unlikely to be forthcoming for a few years at least.

As it happened: Turori 1-3 Kelssek
Key events | Min-by-min

A milestone in their climb back to the top echelons of international soccer?
Time will tell. But it was certainly a night to remember for Kelssekian soccer. I'm not sure about some of these puns but you can read Micah Reed's match report here:
Kelssek shocks the Eels at the World Cup qualifiers
It was an electric atmosphere but it was Kelssek who slipped away with the win as they came from behind to win 3-1 against World Cup semi-finalists Turori.

Full time: Turori 1-3 Kelssek
And that will be it. This is a real scalp for Kelssek, but they remain quite far out in fifth place. This doesn't do Turori's hopes much good, but they remain in second place. What next? Stay tuned...
Goal! - Turori 1-3 Kelssek (Ó Tuathail, 73)
Kelssek make the most of a rare spell of possession in the final third. Picking up the ball on the wing, Ó Tuathail wrong-foots his defender, cuts inside, and curves a strike just inside the far post! A big game for the Oldem Knights winger.
Goal! - Turori 1-2 Kelssek (Lister, 52)
What a turnaround after half time as Matt Lister puts Kelssek ahead! Ó Tuathail threads a through ball to Brayden Custworth, who taps the ball across the penalty area towards Lister. Cool as you like, he half-volleys it past An'maude. Kelssek are in the lead!
Goal! - Turori 1-1 Kelssek (Lapierre, 47)
That half time break seems to have energized this Kelssek team, and it's rewarded with a free-kick 28 yards out as Yitizo Mpala'a sends Brayden Custworth to the floor. Up steps Gabriel Lapierre, whose strike is helped into the top right corner with a deflection off the wall. Away from home against the World Cup semi-finalists, they'll take this.
Half time - Turori 1-0 Kelssek
Kelssek are showing a well-drilled defence but go into the break down by one. The quality of Turori showed through as the half came to a close, and they need to find a way to stop Timi'sala Koarena getting those crosses in. Every time he gets one in it seems like penalty box havoc.
Goal! - Turori 1-0 Kelssek (Mungwaii 39')
This was coming for a while. Kelssek have been able to fend off the Turori attack, but haven't been into the Turori half for nearly 10 minutes. Finally those passes connect with and this time there's nothing Kai Poirier can do. Call that a jungle strike as Mungwaii fires the ball low to the left from point-blank range.

Surprise, sadness order of the day
by Frank Armitage
The Mail on Sunday Chief Soccer Writer

Reporting from Charter Township:

It was a grim, somber mood on Friday at the FAC Development & Training Center here, similar to the mood from four years ago when the announcements were made on the final roster for the remainder of the World Cup Qualifying.

The FAC had gone to the unusual step of issuing a press release from managers Trevor Richmond and Pamela Scott a day earlier, in which they described their fundamental distaste at having to go through the process. One got a sense of foreboding that there were going to be some big names who were going to be left off the list.

The mid-morning saw the younger players, those who were really getting their first chance to make the squad being informed; most knew that they were long shots anyway, and have better days ahead of them. A few came away disappointed but not dejected, like Piet Van den Bloom, who understood that his playing time for his former club hindered his chances, but now with a spot at Corinthians, he'll be more visible to the staff.

As the veterans arrived, there were plenty of hugs, handshakes and expressions of good luck while the released cleaned out their dressing room stalls. Unnoticed in the commotion were a few senior players being quietly ushered into the coaching office. These were the unlucky ones--their service and accomplishments clear for all to see, but they wouldn't continuing in the squad this time around.

Among the forwards, it was Jackie Thomas and Seth Schmidt who missed the cut after having been in the Finals squad previously, along with Eddie Wagner and Missy Tilton, victims of the numbers rather than their actual play.

In the midfield, it was Nathan Ohler who would not be returning, another victim of too many players for a limited number of positions; the same fate that befell Sunish Ismail, Amanda Hayes, Daisy Callum, Antonio Sotolongo and Maria Fernandez.

At the back, Eric Herrara was the odd man out and there was no spot for Sarah Foreman, Tyler Messer, JC Bartok or Tyler Messer either.

The biggest surprise came at the Number 1, where the all time leader in caps for goalkeepers, Scott Hartline, probably has played in his last World Cup campaign. It came down to looking at the future, as Kyle Moyer has progressed rapidly over the last 18 months, and Caroline Gordon played Hartline to a standstill in their appearances.

There were plenty of emotions on display at the end of the afternoon, elation tempered with disappointment for teammates.

There was a moment that underlined the changing of the guard in the National Team dressing room, as Veronica Navarro and Lorenzo Taborn shared a subdued but happy embrace with one another; having first played together on the Baptism of Fire runner-up team, they have continued their friendship through several other tournaments and both were among the final cuts four years ago. Now both had survived and their smiles were a bright light on a dark day for many others.

as of the Walenstein match, my roster will be reduced and I will update my roster page accordingly.
