Mixed Martial Arts (Season 1 ends)

Postby The Babbage Islands » Mon Apr 12, 2010 3:47 pm

Welcome to the inaugural Global All-Arts Fighting (GAAF) mixed martial arts series! We have openings for up to 12 nations during the beta phase. Three fight cards are scheduled each week, scorinating on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings.

Participant Roster Requirements

Please submit a list of up to five fighters in order of merit, first listed is best.
Each fighter needs a weight class and a style. You may have any combination of weight classes on your roster.
The seven weight classes are flyweight (women), bantamweight (women), lightweight (men), welterweight (men), middleweight (men), light heavyweight (men), and heavyweight (men).
Styles range from 1.0 (almost purely striking) to 9.0 (almost purely grappling). Non-integer styles to one decimal place are fine.

Participating Nations

1 The Babbage Islands
2 Osarius
3 Delaclava
4 Undeadzombiee
5 Cafundeu
6 Toiletdonia
7 Virabia
8 Immortal lord drake
9

Fan-Based Ranks

Fighters are ranked according to their fan base. Each nation's top fighter (class is irrelevant) starts with 31,000 fans. The second-best fighter starts with 28,000, then 25,000, 22,000, and 19,000. Once nations are allowed to extend rosters, all fighters beyond the first five start with 15,000 fans.

Definition: A "block" of fans is 10% of the losing fighter's fan base, rounded down.

The winner of each fight takes fans directly from the loser according to the status of the fight:

  • Ordinary non-feature match: One block. Most matches are non-feature matches.
  • Prestige match: Two blocks. Prestige matches are either of the two non-feature matches with the highest combined fan base on a given card.
  • Playoff match: Three blocks. Playoff matches designate a challenger for the championship of a class. Both playoff and title matches are considered feature matches.
  • Title match: Four blocks. Title matches may see the championship established, retained, or changing hands. Both playoff and title matches are considered feature matches.

Event Cards--Schedule

GAAF1, Tue Apr 20, 10 non-feature matches.
GAAF2, Thu Apr 22, 10 non-feature matches.
GAAF3, Sat Apr 24, 10 non-feature matches.
GAAF4, Tue Apr 27, Seven four-way playoffs (14 matches), one for each class.
GAAF5, Thu Apr 29, Seven title matches, 5 non-feature.
GAAF6, Sat May 1, 12 non-feature.
GAAF7, Tue May 4, Women's flyweight playoff, 11 non-feature matches.
GAAF8, Thu May 6, Welterweight playoff, 11 non-feature matches.

At this point we'll take a break and discuss any needed changes to the series.
Anticipated future cards for season 2 without dates:

GAAF9, Women's flyweight title, Heavyweight playoff, 10 non-feature.
GAAF10, Welterweight title, Lightweight playoff, 10 non-feature.
GAAF11, Heavyweight title, Light heavyweight playoff, 10 non-feature.
GAAF12, Lightweight title, Women's bantamweight playoff, 10 non-feature.
GAAF13, Light heavyweight title, Middleweight playoff, 10 non-feature.
GAAF14, Women's bantamweight title, Women's flyweight playoff, 10 non-feature.
GAAF15, Middleweight title, Welterweight playoff, 10 non-feature.

If format changes are not needed each future season will be seven cards fought in a bit over two weeks, with gaps in between seasons.

Event Cards--Matchups

All cards will be assembled by me using the following system.

First, fill any title or playoff matches.

1a. Title matches pit the current champion of a class against the designated challenger. If the title is vacant, the two winners of a four-way playoff match fight for the title.
1b. Playoff matches are held between the two top fighters in the class other than the champion, to designate the challenger for the next title match.
1c. Four-way playoff matches are announced on occasion putting the top fighter in the class against #4, and #2 against #3. This is a special event used to find two challengers for a vacant title.
1d. Contender ranking to get into a playoff or feature match is determined by sorting the fighters in the class according to fan base (descending) followed by last match date (ascending) followed by lots.

Second, fill non-feature matches.

2a. Sort the entire roll of fighters by date of last match (ascending) followed by fan base (descending) (ascending) followed by weight class (descending).
2b. Select the first listed unpaired fighter for each nation. They are guaranteed matches on this card.
2c. Pair the fighters from step 2a against each other by weight class in order of listing where possible. Some may not be able to be paired yet.
2d. Find opponents for the remaining step 2a fighters by taking the first listed unpaired fighter in the correct class.
2e. Fill each remaining non-feature match by taking the first listed unpaired fighter and scanning down the list to the next unpaired fighter of that class. Repeat as needed.

Scorination

Scorination will be provided by a dedicated scorinator, ODS spreadsheet-based, using as inputs fighter style, fan base, and current national RP bonus (the last on a 1-10 scale). Scorination time is expected to be 1100-1130 UTC.

Roleplay bonus

RP bonus for each nation is cumulative with decay over time. All posts made before each card are considered together for bonus for that card. One excellent post garners more benefits than several weak ones. The minimum total RP bonus is 1, the maximum is 10.

Taking a bump so the topic doesn't get lost quite yet, noting that more than half the people who expressed interest are not yet in.

There appear to be enough fighters registered to announce the GAAF 1 card, so I will do that tomorrow morning leaving the weekend for RPs and added signups before the matches are scorinated on Tuesday.

Still plenty of time to register; in fact, registration will be open on a continuing basis even after fighting starts. It should be easy enough to jump right in.

What limits are you defining for the weight classes? I suspect that somebody who's only classed as a 'lightweight' by Ursine standards might actually be a 'heavyweight' as most other people see it...

As usual, we humans get caught up in humanocentric thought modes. Top weights for the men's classes are 265, 205, 190, 175, and 160 pounds; top weights for the women are 135 and 125 pounds, corresponding to Nevada's class definitions used in many US jurisdictions by state sanctioning bodies.

Jimmy Franks will be facing Jacob B. Castle of Immortal Lord Drake, in the Far Point Convention Center. While we realize that all 31,000 of you will not be able to fit, we do ask that at least 7,000 of you show up. Franks has been training hard for this, and he will try his best against Castle.

Andre McLean, trash-talking superstar of the Osarian Combat Federation lightweight division, was on the phone. "Son, I ain't know why the hell they sent your ass to compete in GAAF events. The best lightweight in Osarius is already in, son. What you goin' do? Get another ass-whoopin'?" He paused. Clearly there was a reply.
"Ahahaha! Son is you crazy? When you got your shot, I owned you. If somehow you get another shot at me, I will own you again. You know this. This is why the OCF Kickboxing ranks say 'Andre McLean, Number One' and the crowds chant the name 'Too Smooth, Too Smooth'. We're not on the same level, B." Another pause. "WHAT?! Son that was years ago. What you doin' now? You got bitched at the olympics and you're ranked what? Are you even top twenty anymore? I don't know. I don't concern myself with low rank fighters no more."

"Dre... you're on in five." McLean's agent, Simon Morgan, was stood in the doorway. The "shifty-looking Southern Osarian" - as Ikutursans were often ddescribed, it was pure coincidence that the few professionals from the region were lawyers or agents - had arranged a press-conference for McLean's upcoming debut at Global All-Arts Fighting 1. As usual, McLean was confident. He was entering intense training for his fight, and was certain he would come out on top, despite having absolutely no knowledge of his would-be opponent.

Another man put his head around the door-frame, with a mobile phone still plastered to his right ear, grinning. "You were saying, Dre?"
The two men burst out laughing, and ended their call. "Yo B, my man... long time." McLean greeted his rival, compatriot Benni Watson. The two would be competing on the same card, both against fighters from Toiletdonia. A stablemate of Watson's was also on the card, in the heavyweight division.
"Yo, wheres the dude from your gym? I ain't see him yet. I know I wont miss him, guy is like a tank, son!"
"Oh, he's on his way. He's always late. Excellent boxer, though. And his brother." Watson replied calmly.
"I'mma bet you right now. I'll win a title before you in this GAAF business. How much credits you got, bruh?"
"Dre... come on man. You know I'll win this one. This isn't kickboxing, man. When we used to train under Sifu back at school, I beat you all the time. I just told you this on the pho-"
"DUDE! Seriously? All I gotta do is keep the fight a standup affair. There aint no way these guys can match me - or you even - for kicks."
"Dre, you know you dont have takedown defense. Mixed Martial Arts is totally diff-"
"Yeah yeah yeah, so you keep tellin' me. I'll prove it on the night, man."
"Dre. You're on." Morgan again.

"Aight B, I'm up. I'll catch you aft-"
"Oh, they want Benni too." Morgan interrupted him. "I arranged for both of you, you're the two most popular lightweight fighters in Osarius. The press want both of you."
"Aight cool" McLean shrugged.
"But pretend you hate each other. The press don't know you're old friends yet. It helps with ratings if you guys ever fight again."
"No problem."

The two fighters followed their agent toward the press area, McLean carrying his OCF Kickboxing title. Simon Jordan anxiously keyed numbers into his mobile phone, "Where the hell is Nwokedi? He's supposed to do a demo!"
"Oh, he's running late, Si. He'll be here in a few probably. Don't sweat it. He doesn't miss appointments, he's just late for them usually. Shanak time, haha." Watson replied, apparently finding the situation amusing. "No really. he's terrible for this kind of thing. He trains really well though. Trust me."
"Fine." Jordan huffed. Clearly annoyed by Nwokedi's apparent lack of professionality. "Well this is the room, there's another door a little further down, one of you needs to go in there to keep up the act."
"Aight, I'll go that way. Wait for the applause to stop before you come in, B" McLean teased as he made his way through the door.
"I'll give you your cue, listen out, alright?" Simon Jordan added as he followed.

"So Andre, how long do you think it will take you to win a title here with GAAF?" A reporter got straight to the point. Just how McLean liked it. He grinned and picked up his OCF belt from the table in front of him.
"You think I need another one of these? Yeah, me too!" He laughed a little. "Nah, I don't know. How long? Uhh... when are the first title fights scheduled?"
His responses were generally in the same vein. But in all fairness, he really was a top class kickboxer, and had every right to brag. The press would take these stories home and it would be headline news, probably. McLean loved the fans and the fans loved him. After about ten minutes, the press seemed satisfied. Simon Jordan ushered in Watson, who was convincing in his glaring at McLean. McLean, to his credit was equally convincing, mocking his "rival" with gestures. Immediately, security stepped between the two of them, and calmed the "volatile situation". More headlines, surely. You had to hand it to Simon Jordan, he was a genius marketer.

"So Benni, Andre thinks he will be competing in the first lightweight title fight for GAAF. What do you think?" The same reporter from earlier, she was a sharp one. Simon Jordan, however, had prepared both fighters for this.
"Well, if he is, I hope its against me. I still want reven-" Watson began his pre-prepared response
"Son, you ain't gettin' no rematch till you earn one!" McLean shouted over him, as rehearsed. A little commotion ensued - staged, of course - before the session could continue. Things continued in this vein until one reporter asked the question Simon Jordan had been hoping for.

"Benni... now that we're looking at a different format, and you're experienced in several styles, would you say you are the better mixed martial artist of the two of you?"
"Absolutely."
"WHAT?! Son, I will kick your ass right here!" McLean again stood up, prompting security to step in. This time though, the two fighters actually instigated a brawl, just what the press wanted, what the fans wanted, and what Simon Jordan wanted. Now, they just had to hope that they both did well. The GAAF event organisers would do the rest, and OSN - and Osarius as a whole - would reap the rewards. The wily agent smiled smugly to himself as Amachukwu Nwokedi was ushered in. A makeshift ring was setup behind the press, for his demonstration, but as impressive and perhaps more internationally respected as he was... hardly anyone would be paying attention right now. They were all caught up in the drama between McLean and Watson. Too bad he'd been late.

FAR POINT, North Island (BPA) -- Organisers confidently expect a sellout crowd of over 15,000 for tomorrow's mixed martial arts event at the Far Point Convention Center.

The inaugural event of Global All-Arts Fighting will feature competitors from eight nations with a bewildering array of styles. Babbage fighters on the card include welterweight Hayden King from Gernsback, a slight favourite over Delaclav fighter Mario Ramos, and middleweight Wolfram Hallhuber of Baden, well-regarded locally but a significant underdog to top-rated middleweight Hato M. Tao of Immortal Lord Drake.

Fighting in the final, featured spot on the card will be heavyweights Jim Hassett of Undeadzombiee and Conrado "Barrabás" Carrasco of Cafundéu. Hassett is a powerful stand-up pounder, and Carrasco fights in a grappling style influenced by Brazilian jiu-jitsu. The contrast in styles promises an excellent match.

A total of ten fights are on the card. The series will move to Belgium, Daimler for its next event.

We are quite short of fighters in three of the seven classes. Any of the existing eight nations who wish to add one more fighter (starting at 15,000 fans as the rules specify) is invited to do so if the extra fighter is either a light heavyweight, a woman bantamweight, or a woman flyweight.

Jim Hassett won his first match in an unanimous decision. It went a full five rounds, and just when it seemed Hassett had finnally lost to fatigue, he got another burst of adrenaline.

Jimmy Franks lost his match badly with a second round choke.

Dukes won in a unanimous victory, easily cruising in for a win.

Hassett looks to keep on a roll in a prestige match against Helon Jakota of Toiletdonia. Both are strong fighters who like to punch... A LOT!

Also on the card is Luke Joesph, a welterweight, facing Barry Brent.

((OOC: A new fighter is introduced in this RP, just a heads up. Oops, forgot to add the style in.))

At Henchman Factory, some of the fighters were sat around a television set, watching videos of GAAF 1 fights. Benni Watson's fight was typical Benni, really. He had faced another strong stand-up fighter from Virabia, but out of fear of being knocked out, he had fought really cleverly. After Collins - his opponent - had taken up dominant ring position in the centre, Watson circled him, picking his shots, landing jabs and low kicks for most of the first round. There was a scare when Watson was bombarded with body shots, but he came back with a few strong hits of his own.
Second round was a bit more exciting, as both fighters took a few more chances, with Watson landing a few good head kicks but not being able to drop his opponent. Realising he may have a better chance of victory with a submission, Watson attempted to take the fight to the ground, but Collin's sprawl led to all sorts of knees for the Osarian. He didn't try that again.
The final round was slower again, as both fighters had started to tire, and were wary of a late knockout. As the clock winded down, Watson had returned to circling and picking his shots. He managed a knockdown late in the round, but wasn't quick enough to follow up, and Collins managed to guard enough for the referee to order the fighters to seperate and stand up. That knockdown seemed to have done the trick though, as the judges scored the bout unanimously in Watson's favour.

The second fight they saw was Amachukwu Nwokedi's fight with Toiletdonian striker Caros Tyrodi. Nwokedi was probably the favourite in this fight anyway. He was a capable striker, having won a bronze medal in boxing at the Olympics, but also a good ground fighter. His fight also began cagey, and it took a while for Nwokedi to find a gap to launch some vicious counterpunches. Tyrodi took them all pretty well though, and came back with a few of his own. When Nwokedi tried to clinch, Tyrodi managed a good throw to floor the Osarian. Fortunately, Nwokedi managed to keep his opponent close, not giving him room to attempt any real strikes. Then Tyrodi made the mistake of trying to pass guard, and Nwokedi quickly took toe opportunity to lock him into a guillotine choke. To his credit, Tyrodi almost escaped, but Nwokedi tightened his grip and changed his body angle to force the submission in the first round.
"Shadowman! God damn!" Benni Watson said to his stablemate enthusiastically. "That was a nice guillotine, man! I see you learnt something from me, huh?"
"I was lucky, really. He made a mistake and I just went for it." Nwokedi replied sheepishly. "He almost got out though, I need to work on that. You're still better at guillotines than I am."
"Ah maybe. You got that kimura shit down though. But yeah, no sweat, big homie. We can work on that tod-" Watson stopped short. He had noticed an attractive woman he didn't recognise just entering the gym. "And who is that?!" He gestured toward her, open-mouthed.
Turning to face the door, Nwokedi began to reply, but inhaled sharply as he saw her. The gym owner, Olufemi Koné emerged from his office, smiling, and went over to greet her.
"Femi knows this chick? What the...?" Watson expressed in bemusement. Jahnyah Rose and Obinna Nwokedi - Shadowman's younger brother - had stopped their workout and come over too, both staring at this woman.
"Hey! Razor! Come here!" Olufemi called over Watson, who duly obliged.
"Lucky bastard." Rose muttered.

"Yo boss. What's up?" Watson asked his coach, casually, as always. "And who's your friend?" He added, in a suggestive tone.
"She is my neice." Came the stern-sounding reply. The smile on Watson's face faded rapidly. "Her name is Ayanna. She is a trained boxer, and will be training in jiu-jitsu with you from now on in preparation for her debut in GAAF."
Watson's jaw dropped. "W-w-what? She's... she's on the GAAF roster?"
"Yes. She just signed up. Look." Olufemi thrusted a sign up paper in front of Watson's face.

Code: Select all
GAAF Registration
Name: Ayanna Koné
Height: 5' 7"
Weight: 135 lbs
Class: Bantamweight
Style: 1.9

"Now, I need you to focus on training with Jay today. Obi will be working on takedown defense with his brother. We need to prepare them both for their fights at Beatdown in Belgium. So far Henchman Factory is undefeated and I want it to stay that way as long as possible." Olufemi continued, but Watson was barely listening. He was too focused on Ayanna.
"Alright, boss man. So..." Watson paused, feigning an attempt to remember her name. He did that a lot, he said it was something to do with not making women 'feel too special and shit straight away'. Fancied himself as a bit of an expert on women, see. "...Ayanna. Er, if you come over to the ring, I'll show you some basics. I'll introduce you to some of the guys too."
She didn't reply, but followed him over to the training ring.
"Alright guys, this is Ayanna. She's signed to GAAF too, and will be fighting with Henchman Factory. Shadow, you might wanna introduce her to your sister later. They're the same weight class." Watson spoke faster than usual, forgetting to actually introduce Ayanna. It was okay though, the others were used to this, and took their cue.
"Amachukwu" Shadowman extended his gigantic right hand.
"You are even bigger in real life." Ayanna laughed.
"I don't get that one often." Shadowman replied, with the slightest hint of frustration behind what sounded like a forced laugh.
"I'm Jahnyah." Rose extended a hand. "But everyone just calls me Jay. I think I'll be training with you in a bit, I train jiu-jitsu with Benni." Ayanna nodded and shook his hand, smiling.
"Obi" Obi raised a hand, smiling.
"Alright guys, the boss asked me to get you guys started off on some stuff for GAAF 2." Watson took a leader's role. He led the jiu-jitsu classes, and Koné seemed to consider him an assistant of sorts. Especially if his actual assistant, Ricky Jaa, was busy. "He asked me to work on jiu-jitsu with Jay, and take Ayanna through the basics. You guys..." He gestured to the Nwokedi brothers. "You guys need to practice takedowns and takedown defense. Obi needs to keep his vertical base, and you should probably work on your takedowns." He nodded in Shadowman's direction. "So if you practice taking down Obi, I'll check in every now and then."
"A'ight" Came a chorus of replies as they moved over to the training mats in the far corner of the gym.

As they made their way over, Watson heard a shout "Benni! Phone!"
"Got it Ricky!" Watson shouted as he picked up the second line.
"Yo B..." It was Andre McLean, sounding a little less confident than usual. His last fight had been a humiliating first round submission. McLean had the upper hand and floored his opponent, but when he tried to mount for some ground and pound, he was caught out. Getting sucked into a grapple fight was the end for McLean. A lot of fans criticised him after the fight, and it had really shook his confidence.
"Dre... how's training?" Watson tried to keep off the topic of the fight.
"It's alright. I'm learning more jiu-jitsu. I'm not losing again. No way." Dre sounded determined, moreso than usual. "And you know I'm not letting you win a title before me, son!" Ah, there he was.
"Well, I'll holla at you later, man. I gotta get back to training. I'm preparing our newest fighter."
"Who is it?"
"Ayanna Koné. The boss' neice."
"What's she sayin'?"
Watson lowered his voice. "Chick is fine."
"Oh forreal? I might breeze through some time, haha."
"Go for it. I'm not gonna step in when the boss wants to punch your head off, though."
"Ah don't be like that, man... Anyway, I was considering changing camps. Too bad it would ruin the ratings if I trained with you again."
"Dude, fuck the ratings. If you wanna train here, come train here. But you're probably better off with Sadistikz anyway. Closer to home and shit, and Reuben Cole is a good guy to be training under, Dre."
"I dunno man, I'll speak to Si about it. I wanna start competing in other disciplines in the OCF soon, too. I wanna be an omnifighter, man. Reuben is a pure martial artist. He doesn't have good training for some of the disciplines I think I could be good at, like Archery and shit."
Watson sighed. "Well its your call, dude. But we don't do much archery here eith-"
McLean interrupted him "Yeah but I know you're pretty good. You can teach me some shit, right?"
"I suppose..." Watson hesitated. "Anyway, if you wanna be an omnifighter, you better get back to work. You got miles to go, haha. Hit me up later, anyway. Peace."
