Postby New West Guiana » Sun Jan 20, 2019 11:15 pm

2nd Champions Challenger Cup

The Champions Challenge Cup is a invite only lacrosse tournament for those who during the recent World Lacrosse Championships(Not sanctioned by the WLC) have proven their ability to consistently rp, win or lose. This competition will place these teams together in the most harsh environment, everyone in one group, one round robin with the top two teams at the end advancing to the championship game, where at the end of the day there can only be one true champion. Winning is the only goal there will be no 3rd place and the one who comes in second will be given nothing, "There can only be one winner".

Laxxers look to finish International Season on high note

The Commonwealth National Lacrosse team will look book a place in the final of the Champions Challenge Cup when they take on Banija, following their 13-9 victory in overtime against former world champions Sarzonia on day one of the competition.

The Banijans and Sarzonia will square off on day 3, meaning a win will assure Baker Park of at least the best record with a day off before the final.

Here in New West Guiana, the ladies team has been the talk of the tournament, following their quarterfinal appearance at the World Championships, and the Banijan media have shown an interest as well as the Kingdom begins to cope with the gender integration of their sporting programs and leagues.

Both Sarzonia and Banija missed out on advancement to the knockout rounds of the 30th World Lacrosse Championships in Cassadaigua, while the Commonwealth upset the hosts to advance to the final 8 before falling to eventual winners Wrexwic.

Head Coach Brittaney Franklin is pleased that the offense has continued to perform along the same lines that it demonstrated during the later stages of the WLC. "During the qualifying, we were reliant on our defense, but started to get the scoring touch back during the final matches we played. We felt fortunate to outlast Sarzonia in the first game and I think we can continue to get opportunities to get shots on frame against the Banijans."

Carter Whitlock shook his head.

How could the Stars defence allow four goals in a four-minute overtime period, especially when things looked promising enough during the regulation period against Baker Park?

Matt Archer scored three times, including the equalising goal with 47 seconds remaining that prevented the Commonwealth from seizing the victory during regulation. The defence also clamped down in the final seconds, preventing a game-winning shot attempt by Sydney Moyer at point blank range with the final seconds ticking away from getting past Sarzonian goalie Marla Wynne.

Jon Austin also won the initial faceoff, but that's when all hell broke loose for the Stars (0-1). The first two goals came within the first 45 seconds of overtime, then Whitlock pulled Wynne for reserve goalie Ethan Chadwick. He then allowed goals on his first two shots, then saved the only other shot on goal he faced. Still, the Stars were shell shocked by the four-goal outburst that left them with a rematch against Banija of the first round playoff tilt that saw Sarzonia defeat them 10-9 to qualify for the next round of knockouts.

It wasn't the ideal situation for a Stars team that looked for redemption after a second round flameout. They would have to win to advance to the championship of this second edition of the Champions Challenge Cup. It was a competition the Stars hadn't even heard of before now, but it was one the Stars wanted to participate in to give the team at least a chance at some momentum.

For Whitlock, he walked into this tournament with something to prove. Now, he has something to prove to himself and to the naysayers in Woodstock around the lacrosse section of the sports complex. He was -- and remains -- the greatest lacrosse player ever to don a Sarzonia kit. Now, the question remains whether he can translate greatness as a field player to greatness as a coach.

Style: 0 (balanced between attack-minded and defensive)
Home grounds: Franz Braddock Stadium in Woodstock, capacity 35,000.
Please note: This team is renowned for its fair play. If you attack first, it will retaliate, but it will not initiate a fight.

OOC: I RP using real time in most of my RPs, so in Sarzonia, it’s only been about five months since the last World Lacrosse Championships.

Coach: Carter Whitlock (36 years old)
Sarzonia’s greatest lacrosse player and the first Sarzonian nominated for the Lacrosse Hall of Fame, Whitlock assumes the coaching reins from Mike Sandusky. An illustrious playing career that led to five World Lacrosse Championship titles and eight medals overall has Sarzonian lacrosse fans optimistic that Whitlock can recapture the magic from the sidelines he so often helped to create on the field.
Defensive Coordinator: Bill Harbour (35 years old)
A teammate of Whitlock’s, Harbour’s defence was critical for the Stars in their last WLC final, when they defeated Delaclava 14-8 in Licentiapacisterra nearly five years ago. He signed on as an assistant coach after his playing career came to an end.
Offensive Coordinator: Tyler Pawlenty (49 years old)
Pawlenty helped mold offenses in college, in particular Rypien State College during a four-year period when that school won three collegiate national titles. His teams emphasise possession and patience, often including multiple passes before taking the perfect shot.
Assistant Coach: George Tomlin (33 years old)
Tomlin recently retired as a faceoff specialist after a collegiate career that saw him win 78 percent of his faceoffs. During his professional career in Sarzonia, he won 69 percent of his faceoffs. He can coach multiple styles of faceoffs, taking into account multiple fogos.
Assistant Coach: Bradley Morse (52 years old)
Serves as goalie coach. He helped several Sarzonian World Lacrosse Championship winning teams with goalies in an informal capacity. Now, he's coming out of retirement to provide assistance as a paid full-time coach after Whitlock convinced him to do so.

Starting 10:
G: Marla Wynne - 5-foot-8, 145 pounds, 32 years old
D: Bruce Taylor - 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, 22 years old
D: Landon Bransen - 6-foot-1, 220 pounds, 24 years old
D: Joe Mueller - 6-foot-1, 215 pounds, 25 years old

Most of the time, it's the attack who are the glamorous ones on a lacrosse team. They're the ones who score the goals, they're the ones who get the attention from suitors of various genders and sexual orientations.

In Sarzonia's 12-5 victory over Banija, the offense did its job, but it was the defence that shined the brightest. Khalid al-Babtain led the way by forcing three turnovers and collecting five ground balls, frequently blunting Banijan attacks.

Sarzonia's opponents managed to score more than one goal only in a frantic fourth quarter that saw them notch three goals against Sarzonia's reserves. They didn't deny the back of goalie Marla Wynne's net for the first time until 1:57 remained in the second quarter.

"We came in with a mission, " al-Babtain said. "We were embarrassed by allowing four goals in overtime to Baker Park. We had to show that we were better than that."

Mission accomplished. Now, the Stars have a new mission and new motivation. Revenge. They needed to win to get a second crack at Baker Park and a chance to hoist the sport's new consolation prize. It may not be a trophy the team will be keen to pass around and kiss, but it would at least be a small measure of vindication for the team and its embattled coach.

As for Carter Whitlock, the Lacrosse Hall of Famer realises that the question of whether his greatness as a player would translate to the sidelines would largely be answered by his team's effort against Baker Park. Win and the team earns a measure of momentum for the next World Lacrosse Championships. Lose and the whispers get louder.

However, Whitlock decided he wouldn't worry about things now that his team's modest two-match losing streak was over. He had too much work left to do.

Finals a rematch for Laxxers
by Kristen Shephard
Staff Correspondent

The Commonwealth National Lacrosse Team will have to finish as they began when they face off in the Finals of the Champions Challengers Cup here at City Field in St Johns against Sarzonia.

If the final is anything like the first matchup it should be a treat for the spectators, as Sarzonia came back with 3 goals in the closing stages to send the match into overtime before BP put the game away with four unanswered goals.

Regardless of the outcome, the trip has been worth the effort, according to head coach Brittaney Franklin. "It was a bit of a shame that we went out against Wrexwic (in the WLC), as we had gotten a really good run going, so the fact that we have continued that here with two excellent performances means we can go home feeling pretty good about the direction we are headed as the Olympics are on the horizon."

The attack has been particularly potent, as Mary McEnerney and Hayley Magditch have continued their hot scoring streak, and Sydney Moyer has performed well off the bench, finding the net at opportune moments.

Franklin had praise for the hosts as the competition reached its climax. "We want to thank the organizers for inviting us to take part against a pair of renowned lacrosse nations, we have really enjoyed our first visit to New West Guiana and hopefully we will have more chances to return down the road."

It wasn't the title Carter Whitlock or any of his charges wanted. Truth be told, it wasn't even a tournament Sarzonia's lacrosse team even wanted to be part of.

And yet, Whitlock finally allowed himself to exhale at least a little. His Stars earned a measure of revenge against Baker Park and the second edition of the Champions Challenger Cup with a 17-15 victory that saw Sarzonia jump out to an 11-6 lead before holding off a second half rally to clinch the title.

The team finished with a 2-1 record, same as Baker Park's, but Sarzonia's goalie Marla Wynne made two point blank saves to prevent the tying goal with 48 seconds left. Attack Brett Hedrick put the exclamation point on the match with his fourth goal of the game to provide the final margin.

After a muted celebration, the team took the trophy over to their navy and silver-clad fans.

"Kiss it!" Hedrick said to the small, hardy Stars loyalists who made the trek and were given the opportunity to celebrate with their heroes.
