The Sun lit the sky above the Free Republics into stunning shades of blue, indigo, purple, orange and gold. Dark fluffy clouds hung heavily in the sky. The most modernized variant of B747 Vangaziland could muster was chartered to fly most of the Imperial Olympic Delegation over the long haul. There were many athletes with high hopes and higher expectations on their shoulders.

One of the most notable returning athletes holds the title of 'the world's fastest man'. The moniker is usually awarded to the winner of an Olympiad's 100m sprint. M.C. Ristoff holds such honors from Olympiad XII. He spent most of the flight making rapid trips to and from the restroom. He has been imbibing large amounts of water to stay extra hydrated for the flight. He is also fighting a slight cold.

Sitting next to Ristoff was his good friend, Ed Labradorite. Ed joined M.C. as a gold medal winner with a victory in the 400m hurdles. The two laughed and joked, while flirting with two female athletes nearby. Annie Rutherton and Elyssa Banders both played for the women's soccer team. They obviously looked up to the two medalists. It always felt surreal to see people they only saw during the games. It was easy to forget that every athlete was training throughout the offseason. Both the soccer and track squads trained in different sections of Vangaziland and never saw each other outside of competition.

The track team trained high in the mountain towns of Imperial Hills. It was close to NSCF powerhouse Imperial Military Academy. The soccer team played tucked far away in the small-market, southwestern town of South Stead. Soccer was at an all time low in Vannish broadcast ratings. There were no plans for a Vannish team to enter any of the next several World Cups. New Gazi runs the most prominent Imperial team in international rankings.

Such a long flight would not be without drama. This plane ferried big stars and larger egos. There was no better example than upstairs in the B747's first class section. Near the back of the domed canopy, a clash occurred across the aisle of the widebody aircraft. On one side sat Jessica Franssen. She was known throughout the motorsports world for consistent success. Not only has she won titles in two different types of racing, she has managed two separate teams to victory under her command.

This success doesn't come without drawing jealous ire. Jess was used to this coming from a surly international crowd. She wasn't prepared for Stina Karlsson and Raychelle Milward. The duo were the co-captains of Spirit Vangaziland. They carried a haughty collegiate atmosphere worthy of top ranked cheerleaders. They were not afraid of drama. They thrived in it. It was their dominion...

It started after Jessica ordered her second glass of wine. Stina turned to Raychelle and loudly said, "It must be nice to DRIVE your way to success." Raychelle giggled and gave her teammate a high five.

Jessica was no easy target. She sat next to someone with an arguably higher profile. Jenna Vandersen was the daughter of the Jarl of Central Vangaziland. She held the Imperial Royal title of Baroness. She helped bring Vannish Motors Racing to a team championship in WGP2 I. Jess Franssen was her manager and mentor for the season. Now they were good friends.

The opportunity for motorsports in Olympiad XIII was major. Many WGPC regulars wondered if the Olympic spotlight would bring new nations into open wheel racing. The WGPC was home to the quickest, most nimble cars in international motorsports. Every season is daringly competitive in a world won and lost by sheer, overwhelming effort. Many people end up broken. Few become champions.

All of this meant exactly nil to the Vannish cheerleaders. To the two of them, there were two types of Olympians. There were cheerleaders and cheerleader supporters. They knew who each other were, as well as who Jess and the Baroness were. Championship rings and Imperial titles were cast aside.

"It must be nice to be a", Jess started to say something slightly harsh until Jenna Vandersen put a hand over her mouth. She didn't want Jess to get caught up in an international incident. All it would take would be one camera phone to record a frumpled Franssen.

Things became heated when Franssen's long time boyfriend came from downstairs. The basketball team was sitting towards the back of the plane and causing loud mischief. As soon as Stina saw Hectare Yulssen, she recognized him as the captain of the Vangaziland Royals. He led Vangaziland to an International Basketball Championships title. The entire time he made headlines about dating Jessica Franssen.

"Hi!" Stina called out to Hectare. She fluttered her eyes and smiled when they made eye contact. This made Hectare blush immediately. He was unaware of the tense standoff he just walked into. Just as a stupid, cheesy grin formed under his dark cheeks, a rapid punch from Jess snapped him out of it by way of a bicep stinger.

"Hey", the 3 on 3 team's starting guard whimpered. He was leaving the Olympiad National Team be run by Steven Eaglesen's capable PG hands. Both players had a similar game. Eaglesen was responsible for leading Vangaziland to back-to-back Olympiad gold medals. He hopes to run for a threepeat. It would be a major accomplishment, though far from an easy one.

"Get out of here", Jess told Hectare while pointing at his nose. He rapidly obliged, not sure why she didn't want him around. Jess could be quite a fickle partner. He laughed, but not until he was safely back downstairs in coach.

"He's sooo cute", said Raychelle. The two played for different colleges, but grew up cheering at the same camp. Many called them sisters. Stina had golden hair and the violet eyes of the Scandinavian Vann tribes. Raychelle had the dark skin of the Gazilians, bronzed with a rich summer glow. They were different but so similar. Both were perfect representations of Vangaziland.

"I'm going to choke one of them", Jess whispered to Jenna.

"Shhh", replied the anxious Baroness. The flight dragged on forever to her. She was used to supersonic transports and private aircraft which broke typical flight speeds. The entire time she felt as if she was managing Jessica's temper. The cheerleaders kept pressure on the drivers.

Things got quiet once Linda Henshmen made noise from the front of the section. "I'm trying to sleep", said the boxer and MMA specialist. Linda held titles in the Multiverse Boxing Organization as well as The Multiverse Fighting Championships. She has fought in several international events ranging from mixed martial arts to boxing. She holds belts in both disciplines.

Stina's rich purple eyes went wide once Linda looked directly into them. She didn't want drama with her. Soon after that statement, Stina put on headphones and dissolved into watching movies. Henshmen quickly fell asleep. Her heavy breathing turned into a light snore.

Another WGPC driver found himself sitting near the back with Hectare Yulssen. Jang Xiaopeng drove alongside Jenna Vandersen in WGP2. He drove for an international team in the WGPC. Now he was racing for the Vannish flag. He spent much of the flight joking with Yulssen. At some point a few athletes started an impromptu rap freestyle.

Xiaopeng won that hands down. he had the tone, attitude and extensive vocabulary to dominate the rhythm. Brash Stevens, captain of the surfing squad hammered out beats on his tray table. Others joined in on his queue. Golfer Lyon Metals stopped by to trade verses with Xiaopeng, only to stumble on a faster beat.

This drew loud cheers and jeers as Xiaopeng was proclaimed the winner.

Now the plane taxied down the dark set of tarmac paths, bumping along with the aircraft's rough braking. Soon they would stop at the terminal. Now they only had a short walk to a bus, then another stroll to their hotel beds. It had been a long flight. They were looking forward to seeing the new country.. The Free Republics were always in the news. Religion seemed important here. This would mean there should be a great deal of history. This was something intellectual Vangazi carried at a premium.

Vandersen would try to visit as many cultural and historic sights as she would find. M.C. Ristoff was also curiously interested in history. The two would likely cross paths while seeking out any nearby heritage sites.

The games would bring lots of competitive attitudes. Alongside those emotions are people of all different backgrounds and walks of life. Some are silly, others are stoic. Some will laugh, most will cry. The entire Empire is represented in one shape or form at Olympiad XIII.

OCC introduces Olympians to compete in FFR
by Jason Quinn, staff reporter

The Great Hall inside Parliament House was the scene for the unveiling of the members of the teams that will embark on the first appearance for Baker Park at the Summer Olympics, a fitting venue when one reflects on its place in the consciousness of the nation.

Lisa Maguire, the Executive Director of the Olympic Committee of the Commonwealth, spoke of the prominence that the surroundings added to the event. "It is our great honor to be able to introduce these men & women to you here, where the country has witnessed many memorable events throughout history. They are making history here, and we are excited to be opening up another chapter in the story of the Commonwealth."

Although the issue of the relatively small number of sports that will be represented has been debated from all sides since the original announcement about participating was made, Maguire stressed that there was no barrier to opening up the invitation to all sporting bodies that wished to send teams under the national flag in the future. "We absolutely want all of the various governing bodies of sport in Baker Park to make a commitment to the Olympic movement. We elected to go with these particular events because we had a bit more long-term partnerships with them."

After the 88 men and women athletes were introduced, they were addressed by both Head of State Michael Gregson and Prime Minister Rebecca Schoenlien, who each congratulated and wished success to all of them. The Head wanted no questions to be left in the minds of those who will be competing. "When you are in the midst of your own Olympic moment, when you are displaying your athletic skills to the multiverse, realize that here at home there will literally be thousands and millions who will be supporting you; there in spirit and cheering for your efforts. And we will be proud, because you set out in the first place. You dared to try, which is all any of us can ask."

The PM also touched upon the theme of pride and effort. "We have seen in the recent past other men and women who have gone and showed those people who knew nothing of our Commonwealth our true colors, our character and our spirit. They have earned us respect of other nations, earned us a reputation of being fair and just. I'm certain that each and every one of you will continue to show other peoples what makes us strong and secure. Because that is you."

The athletes, coaches, officials and other members of the delegation will be headed to Republica for several days of training and acclimatization ahead of the Opening Ceremony.

South Covello Olympic Preview

South Covello is entering a delegation of over 500 athletes to the Games of the XIII Olympiad, and we will be unable to preview them all, so we will just look at some of the more interesting ones.

Chompers McChewChew will compete in several of the men's swimming events. He is a pretty good swimmer and derives his name from the fact that when not swimming in the pool, he wears the mascot costume for the minor league baseball team Goatford Goats. He loves wearing goat costumes even when he is not the mascot as well and may very well wear it around the Olympic Village. Be sure to say hi to him if you see him in a goat costume.

Tortoise Vendissimo and Turtle Vendissimo are identical twin sisters who will compete in many of the women's swimming events, including several events where they will both compete. They are identical twins and look almost identical, so fans will have a tough time telling them apart. They are funny jokers and love tricking people into thinking they are the other twin, to the point where the South Covello Olympic Committee forced them to wear different colored swim caps so they cant claim the other won or lost or whatever. Tortoise will therefore wear a sky blue swim cap while Turtle will wear a red one. They will compete with their older siblings, who are also twins, Potato Vendissimo and Kumquat Vendissimo in the relay events.

Elephant Eater Rogers is a race walker who will compete in both men's race walking events. He is so named not because he actually ate an elephant, but because he once ate a whole strawberry shortcake which was the size and shape of an elephant, in just 24 hours.

Ja'eid'iao'pa'mia'lia'hulafula Fu'umatu'ma'afala'ani'iho'ola'alela will compete in the men's shot put. He is not really all that notable except for his ridiculous name, which is pronounced "Jared Dopa Malaria Hula Fula Fumatu Mafala Aniloho Ola Alela" and will take longer to say than it will take him to compete most likely. It is really ridiculosu.

Busty Daniels is a porn star who will be competing in several of the women's track events. She is also known for portraying then-candidate for Republican Consul Scarlett Nicholls on the hit South Covellan comedy show Friday Night Live during several debate satire sketches. As Nicholls is now Consul of the Free Republics, Daniels hopes to meet her during the Games and pose for pictures with her in her Scarlett Nicholls costume.

Paul "Rabid Dog" Beater is compting in one of the men's boxing events and is the top boxer in South Covello. He is so nicknamed because he has been called "mad as a rabid dog" and during the War of Independence, he famously knocked out a Gregist soldier with a single punch and prevented a massacre of Resistance Fighters.

Vroom Vroom Cook and Boom Boom Cook are twin brothers who will compete in cycling. Their younger brother Dumbo Cook will also compete. Although cycling is still not that popular in South Covello, seeing as owning a bike was banned in the Gregist days for all except VIPs, it is a fast-growing sport and the Cooks hope to win medals and encourage more citizens to ride.

Bshwn Mcklvch, Hvnwr Mcklvch, and Ncklw Mcklvch are brothers who will compete in the men's epee. They have been called the "Vowelless Fencers" as none of their names have any vowels. Their last name is pronounced like "Macklovich" while their first names are pronounced like BeShawn, Anwar, and Nickolai, respectively.

A lot of really old ladies will compete in sailing as part of their Old Lady Sailing Club. They include Gertrude Iama95yearoldladyandilikeboating, Mabel Iama97yearoldladyandilikeboating, Maude Iama102yearoldladyandilikeboating, and Sadie Iama109yearoldladyandilikeboatingbutmainlyimtoooldtogetoffthisboatsoillstayhereforever. They are all extremely old and highly unlikely to win medals but their Old Lady Sailing Club somehow managed to qualify.

Shooting is one of South Covello's best sports, due to it being seen as a need to resist future tyranny like the Gregists or new Gregists or tyrant candidate Carter Redwin or perhaps if Revan Bernat invades, so most South Covellans know how to shoot and shoot well. Many of the athletes were Resistance Fighters during the Revolutionary War. Some of them include Shooty Boom Boom Palewood, Yu Du Su, and Him Duck Soup.

The Kadlaskian Family from the reality TV show Keeping Up With the Kadlaskians will all compete in cycling despite the fact that they are all ditzy attention seeking idiots. Or perhaps that is exactly why they are competing. As is the family rule, all of their names begin with the letter K. Participants include Klementine, Karat, Karrot, Koala, Keepingupwiththe, Kumquat, Kable, Kookie, Kup, Kokonut, KoKoKo, Kokoabo, and Kokoa. KoKoKo and Kokoabo's names are in homage to the Cocoabo company and their subsidiary CoCoCo, which are responsible for helping to build the new South Covellan economy with their awesomeness. Kadlaskians who were too young or too old to compete include Khlamydiah, Kello, KiKi, KiKiKi, Kaka, Kemba, Kashmoney, Kondom, Krotch, Kokakola, and Kopkiller. Perhaps some future Olympic Games some of those will compete too.

And of course, there are hundreds more South Covellan competitors, so many we can't possibly get to all of them. But South Covello is hoping they will all do well. With the Opening Ceremony in just a few days, only time will tell.

Santaclausisgodistan Olympic Preview

Oh, sure, you know the Santa Clice and Mrs. Clice who are representing Santaclausisgodistan, they're rather boring, but do you know the other famous Santa Clausian athletes? Well, let's take a look at some of them. But first, some notes. Since it is Christmas every day in Santaclausisgodsitan, the Santaclausisgodistani delegation will have some surprises in store for everyone else. Yes, that's right, every athlete, coach, official, and other staff member attending the games in Republica will get a Christmas present. It may not be Christmas in Republica, but it's Christmas in Santaclausisgodistan because it's Christmas every day there. So yes, everyone gets a Christmas present. It will surely be so fun! (OOC: Feel free to RP what presents members of your delegation received.)

OK, now, on to the athletes now that we've established everyone gets a present.

Mr. Hanky the Christmas Poo is competing in several of the diving events as well as the synchronized swimming event. He is a magic piece of poo who was created with Christmas magic and brings Christmas joy to boys and girls everywhere. As it is Christmas every day in Santaclausisgodistan, he brings peace, love, and joy to children every day. In the two member and duet events, he will compete alongside his creator who gave him the Christmas magic, Eric Cartman. His wife and daughter are also competing in some events.

In honor of the hit song 12 Days of Christmas, Santaclausisgodistan will send athletes for each of the twelve days, because that is part of the Christmas magic. The 12 Drummers Drumming will compete in boxing and canoe, the 11 Pipers Piping will compete in cycling, the 10 Lords a Leaping will, naturally, compete in high jump, long jump, triple jump, and pole vault, the Nine Ladies Dancing will compete in canoe and kayak, the Eight Maids a Milking will compete in boxing, the Seven Swans a Swimming, all of whom are sapient, will naturally compete in swimming events, the Six Geese a Laying, who are also sapient, will compete in cycling, the Five Golden Rings, who are also somehow sapient due to Christmas magic, will compete in canoe and kayak, the Four Calling Birds who, yes, are also sapient, will compete as a relay team in track, the Three Franch Hens who are also sapient will compete in badminton, the Two Turtle Doves who are also sapient will compete in diving, and the Partridge in a Pear Tree, who is also sapient, will play badminton.

The Magical Christmas Horse will compete in all the Equestrian events. As he is magical and sapient, there will be no rider. He is magical and Christmasy and it is so amazing.

Frosty the Snowman will compete in the men's fencing events. He is a magical snowman whose magic comes from his top hat. However, he will be given special magic dispensation to be magic without the top hat since he cannot compete in fencing while wearing the top hat.

A Sapient Figgy Pudding will compete in the women's fencing events. What is a figgy pudding? Well, it is a pudding made from figs. Although the figgy pudding is indeed edible, it should not be eaten as that would likely be considered murder under Republican laws due to the figgy pudding being sapient and the fact that it is likely illegal under Republican law to kill and eat sapient beings. So don't do that.

All of Santa's reindeer will compete in various events, including Rudolph in golf and several others.

The Evil Guy in Frosty the Snowman Who Wore the Top Hat is competing in judo. He is the evil guy who tried to kill Frosty, but now he has reformed and targeted his aggression towards judo instead of magical sapient snowmen.

Baby Jesus and his mother The Virgin Mary will compete in Karate in the Kata event. As they are perfect in any way due to being Jesus and The Virgin Mary, they are actually quite good.

Santa's Favorite Elf and Santa's Second Favorite Elf will compete in sailing. Unfortunately, Santa's other elves could not compete.

Snowball II, Snowball III, Snowball IV, and Snowball V, all of whom are sapient cats, and many of whom are not white like snow, will compete in sailing events. Also, Angel We Have Heard on High will team up with The Virgin Mary in one event, as will her husband Joseph.

The Grinch will compete in several shooting events. He is trained in shooting as he has to shoot Christmas presents to steal or destroy them. He is very evil and was just released from prison for trying to steal Christmas. After getting out of prison, he met Cindy Lou Who and reformed and grew a heart. Cindy will compete in shooting as well.

Santa's Little Helper, a sapient greyhound, will compete in skateboarding. He was rescued from the evil trainer on Christmas Eve, hence his name. Of course, every day is Christmas Eve in Santaclausisgodistan, and his name was already Santa's Little Helper before that, so this is probably an urban legend. Nonetheless, he has gone from racing to skateboarding, and a skateboarding greyhound is so cool and so cute.

Krampus will compete in men's tennnis. He is an evil counterpart to Santa Claus and is half goat, half demon. He visits bad children on Christmas Eve, ties them up in their socks, and takes them away. So too will Good King Wenceslas who will hopefully keep Krampus in check.

And of course, there are a bunch of Santa Clice and Mrs. Clice but they're boring so we'll ignore them. That's it. Merry Christmas, everyone!

2nd Assassination Attempt, bomber writes letter to ATV claiming responsibility for both.

Byron Weaver, the target of the recent assassination attempt.

Byron Weaver is on critical condition after an attempted assassination attempt yesterday. 28 year old Olympic Gold Medalist Byron Weaver was the target this time, suffering shrapnel wounds after picking up a booby-trapped copy of The Observer, that, when picked up, caused a small bomb to explode outside of his home in Perth.

Police reports say that Byron suffered severe damage to both legs, his groin, and part of his stomach. It is unknown whether he will be able to compete for next year's Winter Games.

His neighbor spotted a possible suspect, whose description is as follows:

White male
Between the ages of 18 and 25
6'1 to 6'2
Approximately 145 to 155 pounds
Black hair
Wearing a black hoodie with a red stripes around the waist and both cuffs
Aviator sunglasses
Black sweatpants, gloves, and shoes.

Another development in the Olympiad Bomber case has also happened. A letter was sent to the AIA, in the same block letters as the note on the 3rd bomb:
"HELLO EVERYONE AT AIA YOU HAVE PURSUED ME AND YET I AM ALWAYS ONE STEP AHEAD OF YOU WELL GUESS WHAT I ALSO TRIED TO KILL WEAVER AND BRADLEY THEY SET ME UP TO FAIL AND I LOVE THE PUBLICITY I GET IF YOU WANT ME TO STOP TELL ATV THAT THEY NEED TO STOP REPORTING I HAVE ALREADY SLIPPED THROUGH THE CRACKS AND YOU ARE TOO BLIND TO KNOW IT

SINCERELY THE OLYMPIAD BOMBER"

If you know anything, call AIA-TIPS or 111. You will be anonymous, and you might get a cash reward of 200,000 Centos or more. (Approximately 150,000 USD)

Some outsiders would assume cheerleading was likely a world of bubblegum and rainbows. They probably thought it was about bright clothes and sparkles. Those people had never met Stina Karlsson. The captain of the Vannish squad was also the captain of the team at Blue Coast University. She spent her freshman and sophomore year completing the school's Army affiliated conscript program. Until 2016, a mandatory period of 18 months of conscript service was in place for Vannish men and women.

College students could serve part time while studying to fulfill the requirement. Much of the Conscript service was geared towards national training. The main arm of the Vannish military utilized volunteer soldiers. The Conscript program was geared more towards readiness. Stina excelled in training.

She earned the rank of corporal before completing her time. Not many conscripts earned the two stripe, NCO position on their initial term. Although her time as a conscript was done, a part of that never left her. It affected the way she ran the cheer team. Her right hand on the national team was Raychelle Millward.

Millward is a full time cadet set to become a Marine officer. She attends Imperial Military Academy. The school for Army and Marine cadets gathered an international profile while competing in Nationstates College Football tournaments. She also brings a military style befitting of a future officer.

The combination of these two strict cheerleaders really sapped away a lot of fun for some of the others. With the Cheerleading segment so early in the games, it was soon time for a dress rehearsal. When two cheerleaders were slightly out of position, Karlsson shut down practice. "Group attention, half right face... Front leaning rest position move."

The athletes had to assume a rigid military position before dropping down into the pushup position. Karlsson dropped into the push up position while still shouting commands. "We failed to maintain proper formation. Therefore, we must exercise. In cadence!"

The others repeated the phrase, "In cadence."

They started to do pushups timed to Stina's count. She continuously counted from one to three. The cheerleaders would count upwards where the four count would be. The pushups started at "zero one" and went upwards past "one zero", "one one" and so on. The count continued to climb. Since they were four count pushups, there were really two reps for every set.

Some of the girls tired quicker than others. They slowed down out of sync with the count. Some stopped pushing and began arching their backs. Most of them doing so were just pacing themselves. This was why Raychelle yelled, "Keep your backs straight."

Soon more people became tired as the count began to rise. Karlsson froze the count with the pushups in a down position. The cheerleaders had to fight the urge to collapse. "Stay up!" Stina shouted at her team as they struggled to fight intense muscle fatigue.

She finally called three, allowing the crew to push up. Finally she gave the group the command to return to their feet. As they stood in strict military position, Karlsson shouted, "We've come this far. We can't miss a step. We can't falter. Cry after the Olympiad. The Empire is counting on us."

"Yes captain", the squad cheered as soon as Karlsson took a pause. She stared at the girls individually eye to eye. She out to take them outside for a run. But they didn't have the time. They had to nail this routine.

She set them up to try again. Those who were off tightened up just a bit, though things seemed more rigid. They would practice the set over and over again.

Nobody said cheerleading was easy.

One of the most high profile practice events were the scrimmages between the Vannish men's basketball team. The team was made up of the top ranked roster in the International Basketball Championships. Vangaziland's Olympiad Team were also back to back gold medalists. Basketball was not just Vangaziland's national sport. It was a game they were extremely talented in.

As a physical morning session turned into a set of afternoon games, select onlookers were allowed to watch certain events. This was before the opening ceremony, just a simple practice session.

The 3x3 team was getting practice. The official squad featured the starting center of the Olympiad team. Art Vesuvian is a 7'2 center known more for shooting than a post game. He has enough handle to create of the dribble and get to the rim. Vesuvian is the first Vannish center to rise to prominence in the new archtype of center.

Mark Ewingson wasn't playing on the Olympiad roster, but he was selected for the 3x3 team. He made an extreme mark on the last edition of the IBC. He led the Royals in scoring, giving a consistent option for a growing points tally. Shooting from all areas of the court mixed with an aggresive, complete offense led the national team to a Championship.

The guiding hand of the team's gameplan was starting at guard for the 3x3 team. Hectare Yulssen has been known as the floor general in charge of the Royals offense. His playcalling is just as timely as his passing. He has a handle that breaks down tight defense through quickness and unpredictability.

The result is a team which should prove tough to beat. Members of the Olympiad team fill in to scrimmage in what turns into high profile 3x3 streetball. The challenger team features 6'10 Juell Sampsen in the center position. Sampsen played one season on the IBC team before being replaced. He has a chip on his shoulder because he hasn't reached the international heights of players like Ewingson.

Anthony Hintersen was also playing for the reserve three. He took on the forward position. He hoped his quick first step would help him get the jump on Mark Ewingson. His speed should help him stick with him in the halfcourt format.

Lining up opposite of Yulssen was Steven Eaglesen. Eaglesen was the IBC team's top reserve PG, joined by Sarah Overson. Sarah ran Vangaziland's Olympiad Womens team from the PG spot. She would scrimmage in future 3x3 practices. Eaglesen was the captain of an Olympiad team Yulssen didn't play for.

Finally they took the court. The game started close, with each team going shot for shot. Ewingson did most of the scoring for the official 3x3 team. Eaglesen had been using his crossover to break up defense on the other side.

This drew a response from Hectare Yulssen who scored two 3 pointers in a row. Vesuvian set both shots up by spreading the floor. Since he could shoot from the top of the key, he drew his tall defender from the basket. Ewingson was enough of a threat to draw a lot of attention. This gave Yulssen time to cut out for a shot. Eaglesen allowed him to shoot the first three, sticking with a double team on Ewingson.

Eaglesen leapt to try stopping Yulssen on the second three from the corner. Hectare's shot landed with a perfect swish of the net.

It wasn't lost to Yulssen who had visited the scrimmage. The cheerleader from the plane was sitting right behind the basket. To make matters worse, Jessica Franssen wasn't far away. Hectare had heard of the inflight rivalry by now. He knew the cheerleader was trying to get him in trouble.

Yulssen responded by turning out all stops for the practice session. His crossover was in full effect. At one point he wrapped the ball around his back before juking Eaglesen hard enough to make him bound recklessly. Yulssen finished that play with a dashng pass into the lane. Ewingson brought that pass into an assisted dunk.

Yulssen and the official 3x3 squad looked slightly more refined. They won the match 21-18. It was a close game won by grit, sweat and crossovers. Ewingson was the only player who appeared to be playing at half speed. He still led the entire field in scoring. He was a generational talent from a nation known for basketball success.

Many Olympians in attendance captured pics and videos of Ewingson's high flying antics. His expression looked emotionless and almost bored throughout the entire affair.

Stina Karlsson waved to Yulssen after the game ended. She hoped he would approach her. Hectare smiled at her, but quickly walked over to Jess. This drew furrowed brows over Stina's violet irises. She had worn a bright red halter top to try drawing Yulssen's eyes even more.

The opening ceremony was rapidly approaching. Athletes were still arriving. There was still some time before the games kicked off. Teams were becoming acclimated to the Olympic Village. Everybody prepared to compete for their nation. The buzz around the grounds was electric.

A conference room in Ioudaia's part of the athletes' village, where a man was standing behind a lectern. Other people were arrayed on the stage beside him.

Tamid gripped both edges of the reading stand as he started his umteenth formal press conference. "Hello and good evening. I'm Tamid ben Ebron, Assistant Minister for Public Outreach with the Sports Ministry. I'm expected to deliver a long-winded piece about how wonderful it is to be here, and how historic this occasion is, but everybody here and everybody watching in Ioudaia, knows that. Sports fans don't want long speeches; they want action, they want victory. Our Olympic sailing team will bring both. The competition will be more intense than ever before, but as a fellow athlete, I can say they'll rise to meet it.

"So, with the preliminaries out of the way, I have have the pleasure of introducing our Olympic sailing team, starting with our team captain, Dexios ben Dan Dan." He took a few steps back from the podium, turning and extending his arm in welcome to Dexios, then went on. "Would you like to say a few words?"

Surprised by the request, Dexios took his place behind the lectern. Since he was tall and lanky, the lectern was a bit low for him, and he stood awkwardly behind it. "Wow, if I'd known I was expected to make a speech, I'd have written something." The sailing team chuckled, some looking embarrassed for Dexios: somewhere, somebody had dropped the ball, and forgotten to tell him. "I, uh, I'd like to-- We're honored to be representing Ioudaia at its first summer games, and especially honored to be Ioudaia's lead-off athletes for the competition. We think we're a strong team, all of us, and we hope we're not going to have to share just one medal on our way home." He flashed a smile as he finished, and the team mixed cheerful laughter with a little cheering and applause.

Tamid stepped in beside Dexios, pointing out into the small audience. "Any questions from the media?"

A slim woman shot to her feet in the first row. "Sophia Laskaridou, Champion Network. A question for the whole team: is there anything you'd like the fans to know about sailing competition at this level?"

There was a long silence. Just as it started to become uncomfortable, one of the three women on stage started her answer. "Conditions on the water aren't exactly the same for each boat, despite what it may look like. The sea is a little different for everybody. Waves hit the boats at different times. Gusts and wind shifts will hit one boat a second before another. Taking advantage of those tiny, tiny differences is the margin of victory.

"Oh, I'm Koré Michali, steering the women's skiff."

A hand rose in the audience, followed by a man. "Pheris Avner, Penepolis Broadcasting. Following up on that, could one of you tell us a bit about the history of competitve sailing in Ioudaia? Is it a new sport or an old sport?"

On stage, all eyes turned to one short, graceful man. "Right," he began. "I'm Endymion, Endymion ben Nehorai. I'm something of the team historian... and trapeze man for the men's skiff.

"Well, there's probably been informal competitions for ages, but sailing isn't like running. We know people used to run for prizes back in the Old Kingdom. Sport sailing is much newer. What really got it going is when Ioudaia acquired Nomanisan, Agare, and the little islands between. That was... what, 1780s? I don't know regular history that well." He smiled sheepishly.

"Anyway, they're far enough away that making the trip fast was a big deal, and that started business competitions for fastest sails back and forth. The prize was profit. Building fast ships and sailing them well made people rich, and taught us a lot about both. That's really when competitive sailing took off; regular people started holding competitions for bragging rights, and then money.

"But serious racing was hampered by differences between the boats, and the need to properly handicap them. Handicapping became its own business once people started betting on the races. People wanted fair races, but nobody knew how to get them. The sport lost public interest then." Endymion shrugged.

"What revived it was the idea of giving everybody the same kind of boat, what we now call one-design racing. That's what we do... that's what we'll be doing here in the Games. That happened about 18...70 or so.

"So, there was a second golden age of sail racing. It was pushed into the background by steamships, but there was enough need for sailboats that racing them for profit and prizes hung on. Foreigners developed standard international rules during the 20th Century, and then... here we are."

Dexios stage-whispered to Tamid, "Should have had him give the speech. He's always got one.", and the press room filled with laughter. A few routine "how do you feel about" questions ended the press conference.

The Life and Times of Mehmet Demirel

by Steve McDougall

The Anollasian Olympic Committee (AOC) selected Mehmet Demirel as the country's flag bearer at the Games of the XIII Olympiad in Republica, Free Republics. Mehmet Demirel is one of the country's most established and successful tennis players, but how much do you actually know about him?

Mehmet Demirel was born in Anollton, Anollasia on June 24, 1990 to an upper middle class family in the Murat Tepe neighbourhood. He has an older brother named Tarık and a younger sister named Ayşe. Tarık is now a pharmacist who opened his own pharmacy and Ayşe is studying law at Stevens University in Jefferton. Likewise, their father is a chemist and their mother was a legal consultant before she passed away 5 years ago. However, Mehmet decided to do things differently.

Ever since he was a little boy, Mehmet was passionate about sports. His parents signed him up for association football when he was 6 years old. He loved it and made valuable friends in the process. Living near the Murat Tepe Ski Hill, skiing was also an integral piece of Mehmet's childhood. He and his family would frequent the ski hill often, but Mehmet generally did not enjoy skiing as much, nor was he particularly fond of the cold. As a result, Mehmet stayed away from winter sports but his love for summer sports did not fade. Mehmet continued association football until the age of 17, playing on his high school team. Meanwhile, he also discovered his true calling: tennis.

Mehmet discovered his passion for tennis through his girlfriend at the time, who offered to teach him tennis if he taught her some association football. During free time, they would meet up at a tennis court and start relaying. She would show him the proper techniques for swinging the racquet and serving. Other times, they would meet at a field and start a match of association football, Mehmet wowing her with his impressive skills. Though in the end, association football didn't truly grasp her interest; tennis grabbed Mehmet by the collar, slapped him once or twice, then kissed him in the lips. He was completely electrified by the sport, the adrenaline of pacing around his side of the court and keeping the ball from hitting the ground twice on his turf was exhilarating. And he was a natural too! After his girlfriend showed him the proper techniques, he picked up quickly and even became better than her!

Mehmet joined his high school's tennis team, while also maintaining his membership of the school's association football team. Mehmet won nearly all of his games against other schools in the region and won the tournament trophy. He kept winning the trophy every time he was on the tennis team. Gradually, Mehmet lost interest in association football and his skills dwindled. During the last semester that he was on the team, he was barely able to even kick the ball properly, garnering much criticism from his team. Knowing where his heart was, he quit association football and focused instead on tennis. It was then that Mehmet decided that he wanted to make tennis his life.

Initially, his parents were against his decision to make tennis his career. They argued that it wasn't a viable and sustainable career and that he should focus on something more academic, like science. But Mehmet was never particularly fond of academia. After months of conflict between him and his parents, they came to a compromise. Mehmet would study kinesiology (a science which involves physical activity) at the University of Jefferton but still pursue tennis as his one of his interests. He stuck to that plan for a while, pursuing kinesiology while being a key player in the university's tennis team. Being away from his parents though, he came to realize that he didn't have to follow their plan for his future. The spark was reignited; Mehmet began to focus much more on tennis again. Once he graduated, he went into being a tennis player as his job, saving the kinesiology degree as a starting point for becoming a physical education teacher after retirement. Though his parents were shocked and dismayed when they found out about his career, they were more accepting of his choice once they learned how successful he was becoming. He was winning in domestic matches against other skilled Anollasian players and in international matches as well. Mehmet Demirel quickly rose to become one of the best Anollasian tennis players ever and is virtually the face of Anollasian tennis today.

Besides being the flag bearer in these Olympics, Mehmet Demirel is competing in Men's Singles Tennis, Men's Doubles Tennis with Kerem Yusufeli, and Mixed Doubles Tennis with Sara Kozan. Good luck, Mehmet! Make us proud!

"If soldiers have protected our country, I protect my half of the court. The tennis court is my home."

Somewhere in Free Republics at a Large Hotel

After the plane landed at the airport in Free Republics, Jessica got off the plane with her band as they headed to the hotel where most of the athletes from Main Nation Ministry were planning on staying for the Olympics. Jessica's manager appeared with the group, where she had a large chunk of thalers that were converted from chips to show the receptionist. "We're going to need about 3 floors of your hotels. Is the west wing good? And some suites as well." the manager said, as the receptionist reacted shocked, as several of the band crew proceeded to bring in equipment through the doors. A while later, Jessica entered the studio to observe the recording equipment and mixers. "Shit looks great! Make sure to get some people to promote us if they want us playing at some venues." Jessica asked her manager, as they walked over to Madden's own suite, where gave a good view of the city outside. "Also, make sure you hire some security. They are going to be some roadies wanting me to blow them, rather than autographs. The cleavage signings are still allowed, though I will punch." Jessica stated. "Jessica, did you bring your-"

"Yes, Brenda! I already put them in my bathroom! I will be fine with and without them! No captain obvious bullshit." Jessica said, letting Brenda know that she has the pills already in the bathroom to which she sighed in annoyance. Gerald knocked on the door, where Jessica let him in. "Got your guitar tuned up? We need to make sure our instruments function, before we can start testing out the recording equipment." Gerald was still wearing his clothes from the plane ride, where he applied some cologne. "Chill your skin, Gerald. We're ain't going to start stuff in the studio until after the opening ceremony. Brenda is having some people promote stuff with some stickers or flyers or whatever necessary. So give me about 10 minutes before I head down there. Ok, Gee-gee?" Jessica said, where Gerald tried not to roll his eyes at the nickname "Gee-gee".

Jason Masami gotten his room in the hotel, where he was having some dinner outside in front of the hotel, where he recognized a familar face. "Ryuu Taichi? Aren't you the one who tombstoned the "Big Cheese" back in 2017?" Masami asked the sunglasses-wearing bodybuilder, as he sat at the same table as Masami. "That's me! I came to the Olympics to show that I'm not just a principal of an educational facility. I did wrestling back in my day, so I have the strength of a juggernaut." Taichi explained, as Masami gotten his steak served to him where he listened onto Taichi's story. "They having the Sparktaker come to Free Republics. Even after what happened with the noodle incident and the pyrotechnics, they redid his appearance. Now, he looks like a legend than just some man wearing a glitter-covered sci-fi helmet." "That sounds rad, by the way I'm planning on having some autographs signed by the stadium tomorrow, even meet some other racers that were at WPG2. Care to come?" Masami asked, where Taichi looked at his watch. "I will, but I just checked the time! I need to train!" Taichi said, leaping from his chair and nearly knocking over a waiter. "Talk about a legend." Masami remarked.

Allen:

You know I never thought the day that the first athletes, of all the talented athletes that exist in our nation, to actually represent our country in an event at the magnitude of the Olympics would be pro wrestlers. It would have been logical if the Government selected a delegation of swimmers, runners, footballers or even esport competitors, seeing as they actually have the chance to bring us some form of gold.

But alas, the first impression made by Kevagari nation to the rest of the society will be with men and women in spandex and masks in a predetermined spectacle.

It is interesting that these games have opted to include professional wrestling as a demonstration event. I do admire the fact that they'll be utilizing something similar to how you rate our matches to determine who advances to later stages of the tournament. Hopefully they'll be forgiving of my matches with Edler. Speaking of which, the bozos up in Corporate know I hate working with that green goblin. He could wrestle someone along the likes of Kobamura (who you know is my favorite) and put in a garbage performances. They're probably ribbing me with Edler, so it looks like I'm going to have to carry him to a showcase.

Speaking of showcases, I've been looking at a lot of tape from the other delegations -- thanks for sending me to the right place for that -- and man am I (along with the rest of the delegation) worried as hell about what we're up against. The guys from Starblaydia? They're putting out gold-level matches left and right; I mean you've given a lot of those matches quality grades that I would kill to get.

If there's any glimmer of hope I have for our delegation, you and I can both agree that it's with the women's tag team match between Fajra/Michaela and Eija/Nathália. Their respective singles matches are hopefully going to burn the house down, but there's no doubt in my mind that those four are magic when they do their tag team work. I've helped out with their singles matches and done a bit of producing for them in that aspect, and the whole giving them notes on how to turn perfection into something even better than perfection but those four can put on a tag team wrestling clinic. Considering this Olympic spectacle might as well be my last go-around in the ring altogether, I'm going to be an optimistic SOB for pro-wrestling if they can bring home a medal for us.

It's almost time for the Olympic ceremony over here, but seeing as you're probably busy writing reports for other matches, I'll be understanding if you don't get back to me ASAP. I'll be sure to send you updates from our trainings and workshops as much as I can, but I might be exploring what Republica has to offer. Either way, hope to hear from you soon.

Best,
HEDRICK

P.S.: Please make sure I don't look too fat while I wave the flag.

OOC: this RP ICly takes place a few days before the Games, as the Kytlerian delegation fly out to Republica. It is an audio RP in the form of a TV newscast on NBO, the public-private state broadcaster. You can listen to all 4:22 of it here: the transcript is below the cut.

Introductory music.

VOICEOVER: The most trusted name in Kytlerian news. NBO News.

NEWSREADER: A moment of history. The first Kytlerian Olympic team since the isolation takes off from Zube International Airport, thousands cheering them as they head to Republica - but still no word on podium projections.

POLITICIAN: The Liberals will work with the FFP, the NUP most certainly will work with the FFP, and I can promise you that we... will... not!

NEWSREADER: Edwards tells supporters there's only one way to keep the FFP out of power, as polls continue to point to a knife-edge election.

OOC, left out of the IC RP because of being assumed knowledge to the Kytlerian domestic audience: the WPP (Workers' Popular Party), of whom Paul Edwards is leader, are the main left-leaning Kytlerian party, and currently in coalition government with the Greens and the PIN (Party of the Indigenous Nation, a big-tent aboriginal-rights party). The main opposition parties are the soft-libertarian Liberals and the centre-right NUP (National Unity Party), and polling at this point suggests they could form a government iff supported by the traditionalist right-wing FFP (Faith and Family Party). And maybe the Varn National Party, but they're now an abstentionist party at the federal level.

NEWSREADER: Police in Borlfield arrest a man they claim to have planned an attack on a Bay City federal building. And we talk to the Margaret Institute researcher who claims to have found something dodgy at the Olympics.

RESEARCHER: This programme, the Delivery of Distinctive Great Youth, is a direct challenge to the foundations of the Olympic movement.

VOICEOVER: The NBO News at Six, with Justin Harrington.

JUSTIN: Good evening. After three consecutive Olympic cycles spent in international isolation, there will once again be Kytlerian representation in the biggest sporting event in the multiverse - and they're on their way to Republica right now. A few hours ago, several planes carrying the team, equipment, and supporting personnel flew out of Zube International Airport - and thousands of people waved them away on the runway. Alex Ortega, who runs the Kytlerian delegation as the so-called chef de mission, refused to be drawn on a medal target, saying only that topping the medals table as happened on home soil is not a realistic ambition and that the real aim is to re-establish the Kytlerian sporting tradition on the international stage. We'll have a story later from Carol Minniear on one country that's taking a very different approach, but first, Daryl Hudson reports on the Kytlerian departure.

DARYL: This moment has been a long time coming. A moment that confirms, once and for all, that the Kytlerian isolation is over - planes of Kytlerians heading for the biggest sporting event of all.

FAN: You know what this is about? This is about what makes us, you know, us really.

DARYL: The thousands of fans who waved away the Kytlerian delegation to the Republica Olympics seemed to share that sentiment almost to a person. The international reputation of the Kytlerian nation was overwhelmingly a sporting one, and there's no place like the Olympics to reaffirm that reputation.

FAN: All the stories I heard growing up were of us playing sport and competing with the best from every other country, and obviously the Olympics especially so as well as the lacrosse team (that won the World Lacrosse Championships on home soil once). And we've obviously got the lacrosse team back (at the WLC) but this makes it feel real. Everyone wants to be part of this.

DARYL: If not necessarily everyone, then certainly an impressive turnout for a working day. And as the planes took off, everyone on board could be left in no doubt that they had a nation well and truly on their side, ready to back them in their Olympic dreams. But how lofty are those dreams anyway? Nobody involved in the team has said a word about medal targets, and even today, chef de mission Alex Ortega stuck to the script.

ALEX: The only thing we'll say, in terms of knowing what we can expect, is that we can't expect a repeat of Zube and Bay City (where the Kytlerians topped the medals table as hosts), not only because of not being at home, but because we never truly know what can happen at the Olympics. Nobody ever does. What we would consider a success at these Games is more about re-establishing the Kytlerian sporting tradition, about making the world remember us, and inspiring the citizens of this country not so much by our triumphs as our aspirations and how we work hard to pursue those aspirations.

DARYL: The waving Kytlerian flags and the sense of occasion, though, may still hint at lofty expectations. But above all, they speak of the excitement that the question of Kytlerian international success can even be asked. Daryl Hudson, NBO News, Zube International Airport.
Out of international isolation and... winning things? Huh?

Host: World Lacrosse Championship 13, Baptism of Iron X, 7th World Championships of Babbage Rules Football, and Games of the IX Olympiad.

Won: World Lacrosse Championship 13, Elephant Chess Cup 7, and Memorial Cup. Also top of the medals table at the Games of the IX Olympiad (24 gold, 63 total medals).
World Lacrosse Championship 12 and World Bowl 47 quarter-finalists, World Bowl XV and World Baseball Classic 20 octo-finalists
28 medals, 10 gold, at Games of the VI Olympiad (13th in medal table)
7 medals, 5 gold, at VII Olympic Winter Games (7th in medal table)
26 medals, 10 gold, at Games of the VIII Olympiad (9th in medal table)

E-sports: Legitimate Olympic Discipline or an Insult to Real Athletes?

By Jasmin Katarinovic, chief sports writer

It's the Olympics soon, you might have heard about them. If you were living under a rock or were just assuming that they would actually be during the summer, you've arrived just in time as the greatest show on earth starts tomorrow.

Part of that show however has touched a nerve amongst many Mattijanans. The induction of so-called E-sports into the group of demonstration events has angered many sports purists and therefore most of the Mattijanan population.

But are they right to treat E-sports with disdain or should we have a more open-minded attitude to what some participants say is the future of international sport? To answer that question, let's add some context to both sides of this digital dilemma.

For the uninitiated, E-sports are essentially video games. Granted they are played, often professionally, by highly dedicated individuals with equipment far in advance of a bog-standard office PC, but at the fundamental level, they are no different to the games played by many recreationally across the multiverse.
The events for the upcoming Olympics are the Trading card game, vehicular soccar, single and multiplayer battle strategy games and most controversially, first-person shooter, fighting and battle royale games (more on those later).

In Mattijana, video games were banned by law five years ago. This was part of a government initiative to encourage participation in conventional sports, particularly amongst young people, and based on the levels of activity registered in Mattijana over the last couple of years, it has been fairly successful. The move was heavily protested by a very small minority of gaming fans, but supported by the majority of Mattijana's older population. This majority were keen to defend the role of traditional sports in society and saw the minority as spotty adolescents collecting only square eyes and arthritic thumbs.

Despite a staunchly anti E-sports stance at home, the activity has gained a big following elsewhere in the multiverse. E-sports were proposed as a demonstration event by the Free Republics and there have been 244 total entries to the scheduled events in Republica. That would certainly appear to suggest that gaming is on the rise and with technology becoming a large part of many people's lives, it is only expected to stay on the up.

Of course the biggest argument against E-sports is the distinct lack of physical exercise involved. The marathon, often regarded as the most physically gruelling of all the Olympic events, requires the burning of around 17 calories per minute and lasts just over 2 hours for the best in the world. In contrast, E-sports players burnt a mere 1.4 per minute, although the length of matches are quite variable.
Having said that, shooting is also an Olympic sport and requires a similarly low level of energy release, the estimated average calorie burn being just 1.5 per minute. There is of course a logical argument to say that shooting should be stripped of its Olympicness, but it becomes easier to appreciate that the line between sport and non-sport is blurrier than it seems.

Indeed the level of mental exertion during an esports game is higher than in many traditional sports. Many professional gamers have a reaction time similar to top WGPC racing drivers, incredibly precise fine-motor skills and can concentrate for long periods of time despite their stress-induced heart rate reaching over double what it is at rest. Whilst muscles are not stretched to the point of tendon-ripping pain (although repetitive strain injuries are quite common), these are very physical skills that a good level of physical fitness will enhance.

Of course one of the other major cases against E-sports is the levels of violence involved. The trading card game and vehicular soccar are of course both fairly benign, but the other 5 disciplines being rolled out at the games all revolve around blowing your opponent to smithereens, either in the first person or as part of a bigger strategic picture. Many heads of traditional sporting governing bodies and Olympic comittees have stood up and said that this is not what the games should stand for and they are of course correct. The Olympics is a time when even nations in conflict can come together and acheive peace, but once again there is a catch in one of the Olympic's oldest sports.
Boxing has been part of the games ever since they began, yet the ultimate goal of the sport is to give your opponent a heavy concussion and permanent brain damage. Not quite in the Olympic spirit, you might say. Meanwhile, sports such as shooting, archery and fencing have developed from man's incessant will to settle disputes by reducing each other to a bloody pulp. In fact a publication from Electrum recently brought up the somewhat archaic rule that if a fencer produces a poke so vicious it actually impales their opponent through their protective equipment, they are handed an automatic victory.

We've touched upon the physical aspect of sport, but what about the competitive aspect? Here there is no arguing that E-sports fits the brief. E-sports is highly competitive and in some countries, prize money recieved is far more than for most traditional sports.
The convincing counter-argument here is that anything can and probably has been made into a competition, regardless of how physical or sensible it is. Chess, tick (chess has in fact also been chosen as a demonstration sport, but seems to have pissed fewer people off)! Welly-throwing, tick! Making cakes, tick! Kicking a modernised pig's bladder into a fishing net strung up between three sticks, actually that one's quite popular.

Perhaps the final nail in the coffin for E-sports is quite a big one. It's not real.

Mathilde Leku really did manage to jump 2.09 metres into the Vekaiyan air at the last games. Sami Sackov really did hurl a small cannonball 21.52 metres. When Jessika Basic scores a penalty corner, she makes a ball made of real atoms fly across a physically defined goalline and no real human response would be able to stop it.
For all the skill required in E-sports, the winners and losers will always be determined and defined by the actions of little characters made up of patterns of electrons which cease to exist once the computer screens they fight their battles on are turned off. Many hope that detachment from the real world will keep people away from their screens and picking up a hockey stick, tennis racquet or cricket bat. A world where the heights of human achievement are measured by the ability to shoot as many characters on a screen as possible, rather than by testing the limits of physical endurance, travelling to faraway worlds or writing incredibly interesting newspaper articles, would be a poorer world.

The crux of the matter is this. As long as we have computers, we will have computer games and they will annoy a lot of people. Perhaps we should be more tolerant of them and those who wish to play them than we are currently - Mattijana is certainly a country that prides itself on its excessive freedoms to practice whatever religion you want, have sex when, where and with who you want and drink whatever you want, in whatever quantity you want. It seems strange that there is legislation against something as innocuous as a video game.

Despite that you can see where the government and the majority of people are coming from. For as long as it survives, mankind should seek to defend the wonder of actual physical sports and the joy, health benefits and blisters they can bring. The Olympics seem like a hella good way to do that.

Emperor kicks off Goodwill Tour

---Blanche Parker; Political Corrospondent for West Phoenicia Centrist News

As the Summer Olympic Games are upon us in the nation of The Free Republics, planes have been flying out of Melbourne-Haven International Airport delivering hundreds of athletes and their support staff as well as the thousands of West Phoenician fans who are enroute to cheer on their favourite sports fans, while thousands more took to the airport with their flags and banners to wish them a great journey. And we all wish them the greatest success.

With patriotism thick in the air Emperor Glenton Gryphon-Bush II has announced his own journey a Good Will tour to each of the other eleven nations that make up the Empire. Under the banner of unity and good sportsmanship, patriotism and love. The Emperor believing this point in time is the best time as the Empire comes together to celebrate West Phoenicia.
The Emperor has apologised that he will not be able to be in Republica in person due to internal diplomacy issues that need to be addressed but he has promised that many of his children and his third wife Empress Cleopatra-Olympias will be in attendance.

Baseball fans applauded the inclusion of Cleopatra-Olympias, seeing her as a good luck charm that assisted with the men's baseball team The Confederates pulling off an amazing win to claim the latest World Baseball Classic title. Many fans hope with her prescence, her good luck with be the boost that the Women's Baseball team, the Men's and women's Softball teams and others will need to bring home medals and glory for the Empire.

"I witnessed the amazing love and devotion that Empress Cleopatra-Olympias showered The Confederates with. With her gentle hand and positive magnetism, we hope she can bring our team some much needed luck," said Marcus Rigby, Head Coach for the men's Handball
"We finished last in our pool during the Novonaya, Kelssek and Provinsk, Vekaiyu Olympic Games. We hope to go much further, but lack of funding has stopped us from having the best handball players represent us. May Empress Cleopatra-Olympias bestow a blessing on the team."

Under the shadow of the Olympics, the Emperor has flown out with his first wife Empress Angelique, the royal delegation has flown out on West Phoenicia One beginning the goodwill tour in the furtest nation in the Empire; The White Rose Confederatation.
A close source has advised that the Emperor will be doing some damage control. Many of the Viceroys who govern the nations of the Empire on behalf of the Empror and who were appointed by the Emperor have reported citizens feeling ripped off that while they are apart of The Confederate Empire of West Phoenicia, their athletes were overlooked during the selection process. Overall 97% of the empires athletes travelling to the games hailed from West Phoenicia. The other nations have demanded a bigger slice of the pie stating their athletes are just as good and the Empire needs to embrace all the nations.
For the Confederate Empire of West Phoenicia to work it needs to be all inclusive and not ignore other parts as they are all one body. The White Rose Confederation is especially displeased as only two of their athletes will be in attendance representing the Empire; those being Mason Greene who is apart of the Men's Artistic Swimming and Philotera Safaga a tight mid fielder for the Women's Caid. Aside from feeling left out of the games, other topics of discussion that the White Rose Confederation plan to discuss with the Emperor is a tax decrease, improved infrastructure and a focus on climate change. The last topic will definitely be something many wish they could listen into. Prior to The White Rose Confederation joining the West Phoenician Empire they had a strong focus on climate change, a policy that West Phoenicia rejects. However many sources claim the Emperor will need to throw them a small bone to keep them happy and stop them from leaving the Empire.

Similar talks will so be had over other member states of the Empire with topic ranging from infrastructure, education, religion, law and order and taxation. The Emperor has been crafty in scheduling the Good Will tour now while most people only care about the Olympics and the tour will largely be ignored by the International media.
We will keep you update as more news comes in.

XIII Summer Games Preview: Expectation Mounts on Eastfielder Delegation

It’s that time again. The Summer Olympics are back after a surprisingly large delay, and this time, the eyes of the sporting multiverse will be on the Federation of Free Republics, with the city of Republica forming the centrepiece in this masterclass of sport.

For the Imperial Commonwealth, there is a lot to look forward to in the next month of sporting events, with 574 event entries forming the record for the ICEL Olympic Committee. But the expectation on these amazing athletes is higher than ever, following an unprecedented medal haul in the previous Summer Games, with Novonaya/Provinsk returning an extraordinary 28 medals for Eastfielder athletes - for comparison, the 11th Games held the previous record with 18, with 15 in the 10th, and only 3 in Eastfield Lodge’s debut in the 9th Games. Since then, there has been a large wave of retirements as many top athletes called it a day at the same time, and there is plenty of new blood featured, along with many returning favourites. Whether this increased pressure from home will help or hinder the athletes in Republica, only time will tell. But ahead of that, this article will look at the delegation and break down where the best medal hopes are.

Aquatics

The retirement of Umar Tariq and Jaber Hakmi announcing his retirement after these Games leaves the top end of Eastfielder swimming in some doubt going forward, especially given the relative lack of medals in previous Games. However, there are still bright sparks to watch out for in Republica. Jaber Hakmi is still the best Freestyle swimmer the country has to offer, and he comes into his fifth and final Games with just a single Bronze medal to his name, a record he wants to improve. His strongest individual events are the 50m, the 100m and the 200m Freestyle events, whilst he will also feature in the two Backstroke events as well - in those, Arthur Helland is the leading Eastfielder swimmer, although he needs to perform at his very best to stand a chance of a medal. It’s a similar story in the Breaststroke, featuring Mahbub Nassif, another swimmer who can compete at the top, but is an outside shot at a medal. Meanwhile, the Butterfly events feature the only medallist from the pool in Provinsk, Arlo Gauthier, who won the 100m event on his Olympic debut. He comes into these Games as one of the favourites for both the 100m and the 200m, and there is a buzz of excitement in domestic swimming circles of having a multiple medallist in the pool. And finally, all four of the above will combine in the 4x100m medley relay, and going by their practice times and individual performances, this may well be one of the strongest relay teams in that event.

Athletics

Surprisingly, Novonaya wasn’t a record-breaking Games for the Athletics section, with the 7 medals won losing out to the 8 medal haul from Nassau Bay 8 years earlier. Nevertheless, there is still plenty to get excited about. Starting on the track, silver medallist from Novonaya Zsigmond Fahmy-Uncelson[b] makes his fourth Games appearance, and is still in great form, running 9.84 seconds as his best this year on top of 3 more runs below 9.90 seconds. He’ll be looking to add to that medal next month, in what may well be his final Games appearance. Look for him to lead the charge in the both the 100 and 200 metre sprints, as well as the 4x100m relay alongside new faces in Majdi Barnett, Miles Dane and Tadej Sala. [b]Renata Wali will be the one to watch in the equivalent women’s events, as the fastest women in the Imperial Commonwealth, also in her fourth Games, hopes to sign off with an Olympic medal to her name, if not three. She isn’t the firm favourite in either of her sprints, but on a good day she could easily push her way to the podium. Orion Dillion is the other big hope in the shorter distances, the 400m runner setting a personal best and national record in the national trials of 43.92 to book his place at his second Games - he also features in the 200m as well, but his times are a few tenths down on Fahmy-Uncelson’s.

In the middle distances, the eyes are on Garin Brock in the Men’s 1500m to see if he can follow up the Bronze medal he sensationally won in Novonaya, his first appearance on the Olympic stage, as a teenager. He has improved significantly in the meantime, winning multiple races since, and he comes into Republica as the man to beat in the 1500m. For fans who may miss him in the 1500, there is a chance to catch him in the shorter 800m as well, although it’s nowhere near his strongest event. Going up through the distances, the darling of the Eastfielder Athletics delegation, Aurora Mohuidden, is hoping to finally see the top step of the podium in her fifth Games, after being the bridesmaid in three previous Women’s 5000m events - a silver and two bronze medals to her name in this event. She has somehow defied age and is still as fast as ever, even adding the Women’s 10km to her event list after Aeropag X. She comes as possibly the overall favourite for a 4th consecutive medal in the 5000m, and is still an outside bet for a podium finish in the longer distance as well. Also look out for young Safaa Beech in the 10km, making her Olympic debut but already a prospective medal winner in future Games - she might just upset the apple cart in that event. The last of the track events to watch finishes with Sydney Iversen, also in her fifth Games and hoping to finally grab a medal in the 3000m Steeplechase, having narrowly missed out on every occasion in the past. And hoping to finish of Eastfield Lodge’s Games with a flourish is Edvin Howell, the defending Olympic champion in the Men’s Marathon, the last event in the Olympics’ schedule. Featuring in his fourth Games, he is still on top form and comes into this Games as one of the favourites to defend his title.

Moving over to the Field, Cameron Drawbridge spearheads the medal hopes for the Imperial Commonwealth, the young long jumper coming out of nowhere to set a new national record in the trials, as a 17 year old, notching up 8.21m, edging past Ali Sabahi’s 18 year old mark of 8.20m set in the Zube Rushmori Games. With two more 8-metre plus jumps in qualifying, that may not have been a fluke, and he could well find himself on the podium. Celestina Duncan is another name to watch out for, debuting in the Women’s Shot Put, but has already proven her potential with scores good enough to have secured a place in the final round in Novonaya, albeit not enough for a podium place, but on the day, anything could happen. And finally, we have the multi-eventers, and it’s the women in the heptathlon who will be gunning for medals, including returning silver medallist Melanee Faris-LeFort and young gun Rachelle Frost, who finished 6th in Novonaya. Faris-LeFort will be competing in her fourth Olympics, but she says that she feels in better shape than she did going into Novonaya, whilst Frost has been closing to gap to the top with every passing performance. Watch out for this pair competing with other across the track and the field, and hopefully, they will both return with medals.

Cycling

Novonaya saw the most successful return for the Eastfielder Cycling delegation in any Games, with a total of 8 medals being won, including 5 gold medals across various disciplines. That level of success leaves very high hopes going into these Games, and despite a few changes in the delegation due to retirements, there is still plenty to watch out for. Starting with the more rugged discplines, Serafin Hussey leads the way in the BMX in his fourth Games, the defending Olympic champion having won the Men’s BMX event in Novonaya. For the women, keep an eye on Haseena Sullivan, also in her fourth Games, as she is slated by some to be a dark horse in this event. Over to the Mountain Biking, we have both a defending champions alongside another returning gold medallist - Cherry Ainley, having won Bronze in Aeropag, went one better 4 years ago as she triumphed in the Women’s event, and she is still on top form and aiming for another title. Meanwhile, Rico McConnell is still going strong in the Men’s event, the Bronze medallist from Nassau Bay still outperforming his younger counterparts as he leads the charge in his fourth Olympics.

Over to the Road Cycling events, there is plenty to get excited about in the Eastfielder camp. Fawzia Mack, silver medallist in the Women’s Time Trial in Aeropag and Bronze medallist in the Road Race in Novonaya, comes into Republica as one of the favourites in both Women’s events, but amongst others she’ll have to fight off the attentions of long-time rival Amniyya Tang, who took the bronze in the Women’s Time Trial in Electrum, and was only 9 seconds off medal pace in the Road Race 4 years ago. The pair will be competing in both events. On the Men’s side, Mees Frederiksen is the standout name, especially in the Men’s Time Trial, after an amazing year with several domestic stage and time trial victories. The Men’s Road Race will be his chance to grab the one of the first medals of these Games, with the event occurring on the second day.

And finally, we head over to the Velodrome, where the Track Cycling will take place. Over half of the cycling medals from Novonaya came in these events, and so the pressure this time around will be immense. But nonetheless, there are medal prospects in many of these events. Ziyaad Nazar will return to defend his Olympic title in the Men’s individual Sprint, and is well in the running for a consecutive medal, whilst Timeo Lock and Shaaheen Olsen will be joining him in the Team Sprint event, and the trio have been working well in practice sessions, running around the same mark as the medal winners from the previous Games. In the longer distance events, Zoltán Speight is the name to watch, as he takes to the track as one of the favourites in the gruelling Omnium event, whilst also sitting as a dark horse in the Men’s Keirin. Speight will also be competing in the Team Pursuit, with that team of 4 also running as one of the favourites for the gold in these Games - he will be joined by Ghaazi Valentine, part of the bronze medal winning team in Prescott, Ikrimah Whitehouse, and Shaaheen Olsen - Speight and Whitehouse will also be pairing up for the Madison, a new medal event (having been a demonstration event in Novonaya) in which the pair may well have a chance at glory.

As for the women, that team will feature the Opening Ceremony flagbearer and three-time medallist Ciri McKeown, appearing in her final Games. She will only feature in the Team Pursuit, the event in which she helped win gold in Novonaya, having retired from the Keirin (the event that provided a silver medal for her in Novonaya, along with a Gold in Prescott). Alongside her will be an entriely new trio of Genevre Cling, Andrea Hodson and Huguetta Salman - the group are expected to put up a serious defence of the title won in Novonaya. Very much a passing of the torch, as Hodson will be the leading light in the Women’s team, having already won a gold medal in the Women’s Omnium in Novonaya - she will be competing in that event again and aiming to defend her title. You can also catch her attempting a multi-medal haul with the Women’s Keirin, and also the new Women’s Madison, alongside Cling - in both, they seem to be outside contenders for the medals.

Gymnastics

Gymnastics is one of the sports that the Imperial Commonwealth has always found some success in, and Republica offers to be more of the same. The mainstay of the team are the Artistic Gymnasts, and in the Men’s team, 4 time medallist Ilyas Read and 2 time-silver-medallist Haamid Acosta will spearhead the team’s efforts for another Team medal, following on from the silver medal in Aeropag - on top of that, they will both be fighting for spots on the individual apparatus and all-round podiums against what is a very competitive field. The rest of the team will be making their debuts this Games, but don’t count out the trio of Sebastiano Hampton, Eloan Munro and Fabiano Ruparelia. As for the women, Novonaya saw the first female Eastfielder gymnast to win a medal, with Marisela Mina winning a silver in the Individual All-Round, and returns as a strong contender for medals in her fourth Games. Jaiden Bertin and Ariyya Stokes are the other big names in the Women’s team, and both are equally good enough to win medals of their own, if they perform on the day. Joia Sharma and Fia Pasha will play their role of the extremely capable supporting cast. Novonaya saw the first Eastfielder Rhythmic Gymnastics medal, as the Men’s Team shocked everyone to win the 8-man event, the first gold medals from any Eastfielder gymnast. Led by Kristóf Kosar, they’ve come into Republica unchanged, and apparently performing even better than they had done in the run-up to that surprise medal - don’t rule out a consecutive gold here. And last but not least, we have the trampolining entries. Correntin Slade is the one to watch here, as the 26 year old comes into Republica with a Bronze and then a Silver from his two previous Games - he will be looking to complete the cycle and finish on the top step this year, and he would certainly earn it. In the Women’s event, don’t count out Sylvie Moon. She missed out on a medal in Novonaya by a small margin having won the qualifying round in emphatic fashion, and she’ll be looking to make good on her potential.

Racquet Sports

Off-the-court drama has played a large impact on the quality of racquet sports in the past few years, but nonetheless, Republica still holds the hopes and dreams of these athletes. Badminton will provide some highlights however - the Haug sisters, Simone and Heidi, are coming off a great four years, starting with their amazing gold-medal-winning performance in Novonaya. They come into Republica as one of the favourites to win the Women’s Doubles event. Whilst all the other Badminton medallists from previous Games have retired, the likes of Delmar Abdalla have stepped up to fill their shoes. Abdalla will be competing in the Men’s Singles, and the veteran has an outside shout this time around, having slowly improved his game over the last decade. The same can be said for Yolanthe Lopez, only in her second Games, who is another brightening light, and could well fight her way to a medal this year.

Elsewhere, with the tennis season being abruptly halted due to the liquidation of the NSTT’s organising body in Ceni, the Eastfielder tennis internationals have been left in a bit of a limbo, with this the first international competition any of these players have had in a year, but nonetheless, there will still be some pressure on the likes of Bradyn Burn (Men’s Singles) and the pair of Kiersten Bullock & Reina Jaber in the Women’s Doubles to live up to their NSTT performances and do well. As for the Table Tennis, Xalvador Hosseini has to take over Marco Tuck’s mantle as the leading Eastfielder’s table tennis player, in his fourth Games himself, but he’s finally been able to step out of Tuck’s shadow and shine in his own light, and has come into this tournament as a firm favourite. And last, but not least, Squash returns as a Demonstration event in these Games, and a decent team has been sent by the Imperial Commonwealth, led in the men’s singles by Charline Atwater - whilst it’s not a medal event, he is still expected to perform well, and maybe even sneak into the top three.

Weightliftng

Competitive weightlifting in the Imperial Commonwealth has seen a boom in recent years, made more popular with the exposure the sport has had in the previous two Olympics Games. And none more prolific than Garan Yassin. Two Games, two Gold medals, with an Olympic-record equalling performance for the first as well. He comes into this Games looking to be the first Eastfielder to win three Gold medals (although cyclist Ciri McKeown might still match him later in the month), so tune in to Men’s 62kg Weightlifting event on Day 4 of the Games to find out whether he defends his title. Another weightlifter defending a title will be Amanda Khan in the Women’s 69kg event, as she also looks to get three medals in three Games, having also gotten a Silver in Aeropag. Another gold medallist from Aeropag returns in the shape of Latrell Graham, who failed to defend his Men’s 85kg title in Novonaya following his return from injury, but he has since fully recovered and is back to his lifting best, and there are high hopes on him bagging another medal. Also keep an eye on Nadine Zamani, the Bronze medallist from Novonaya in the Women’s 75kg, as she looks to improve her position on the podium four years later. Elsewhere, Jaylon Hafeez has a bone to pick in the Men’s 56kg, having missed out on a medal in Novonaya by a single kilogram, with the gold medal winning lift only 4 kilograms higher than his best - narrow margins indeed, and he is back to grab a medal that he so narrowly missed 4 years ago. And finally, Hortecia Iman is the other big name to return to the Games, in the Men’s 105kg. Question marks remain around his selection, as his best weights in previous Games were far below what he showed in the domestic scene, and this may just be his final chance to prove his strength on the Olympic stage.

Other Medal and Demonstration Events

Plenty of athletes and teams are travelling to Republica with hopes of glory, even in sports with few events or entries. Going alphabetically by sport, first we come to Fencing. Not a popular sport in the Imperial Commonwealth, and the sole internationally recognised fencer we have had prior to Novonaya was Zara Samuel, born in Montreal, Quebec, to Eastfielder parents, a country that is famous for its fencing fancy. She hasn’t done well at the Olympics however, despite her other successes - an immediate exit in Novonaya in the Sabre is not her proudest moment. However, she still has a chance at redemption, and she may take it. Meanwhile, Fencing in Novonaya did produce a medal elsewhere, where much to astonishment of most, the team of Edward Watson, Asadel Simms and Artus Kaba played the tournament of their lives to triumph in the Men’s Team Sabre. They haven’t done much of note since however, but the trio do return for both the individual and team Sabre events, so watch out for them.

Field Hockey is a big sport in the Imperial Commonwealth, possessing one of the few top level professional leagues in the multiverse, and that is reflected in the strength of the teams sent to Republica to face the world’s best. Both the men’s and the women’s teams come into this tournament as firm favourites for a medal - indeed, the women’s team will want to improve on the silver medal won in Aeropag. Rugby is more of a niche sport however, but that didn’t stop the Women’s Rugby Sevens team from winning Bronze in Provinsk 4 years ago, and there is a similarly strong team sent to Republica to try and improve on that. Sailing is in a similar boat, as there is not an organised competitive sailing scene in the Imperial Commonwealth - however, Léandre Wagstaff and Chenelle Thorne overcame the odds to win Eastfield Lodge’s first ever sailing medal, winning Bronze in the Mixed Multihull class in Novonaya 4 years ago. The duo, who train all over the world, will come into this competition confident of adding to their tally and maybe even going further.

Aside from the standard medal events, the Republica Games will also host a wide variety of Demonstration events, many of which will have never been seen before at an Olympic Games. Amongst those, most controversially, we have possibly the most machine-based sports ever to grace an Olympics - Open-Wheel Auto Racing makes a surprise debut, and this will be a hotly contested event with many of the world’s best drivers, from the WGPC series and beyond, coming to compete in a single Men’s and Women’s race. Amongst the Eastfielder contingent vying for the victory are Cesaro Whittaker, Dalia Dahl and Laurencia Lynds, all of whom have had moderate experience in the most recent WGPC and WGP2 seasons. The other set of events in this machine category are the most controversial yet, as they don’t even involve what some would classically consider as athletes or sportspeople; eSports makes its first ever Olympic appearance! Yes, competitive video gaming will be on display for the world to see, with events in various gaming formats. In terms of Eastfielder interest, the Men’s and Women’s Battle Royale teams are supposedly the cream of the crop, and possibly the teams to target early on in this one-match last-man-standing event. Elsewhere, the more traditional tournament format features the Men’s First Person Shooter team as big favourites for the overall victory, whilst watch out for the Women’s Vehicular Soccer to spring a surprise counter-attack for a outside chance at victory.

Also featuring in the ‘Brains over Brawn’ category is the noble pastime of Chess, and one of the world’s best chess players will be competing, in the form of renowned Grandmasters Georgine James and Brisa Faure in the Women’s game, and Cruz Botkin in the Men’s event. Of these, James has the highest rating, and she will the most likely to do well in her event and triumph. And finally, whilst not out and out favourites for the win, there are plenty of Eastfielder teams competing in team sports in this very expansive Demonstration event programme. The best-rated amongst them include the Rugby League Nines squads in both the Men’s and Women’s competitions (Sevens is a Rugby Union code sport), as well as the returning Men’s and Women’s Sevenball teams, following the Men’s second place finish in Aeropag when this sport was last a Demonstration event.

Olympic Spotlight: Eye on Almasi Weightlifting Power-couple
By Dyana Moretevnov, profile correspondent for the XIII Olympiad

I have personally had the pleasure of interviewing a majority of our Almasi Heroes heading to the Games of the XIII Olympiad, and it further my pleasure to inaugurate the Profiles of the Games with the story of Erzhan Ardagerev and Dilyara Baurzhanova.

Erzhan will be competing in Men's 56 kg, Men's 62 kg, and the Men's 69 kg.
Dilyara will be competing in Women's 63 kg, Women's 75 kg, and Women's Over 75 kg.

Born in the mountain village of Ellarzov, Erzhan and Dilyara are both of farming families living in rural simplicity. When Dilyara's father fell terribly ill with an unknown and infectious disease, Dilyara fostered with the Ardagerevs while the rest of her family remained in quarantine. Her family eventually passed, and Dilyara was sent to state foster care and a boarding school outside of Altaysk.

Dilyara would make as regular trips as possibly back to Ellarzov to visit remaining friends, and in particular Erzhan. They would keep correspondence over lettermail, through which Erzhan first learned about the sport of weightlifting. Dilyara wrote about the sport endlessly- her love of spectating turned to desire to compete in time, though she was blocked from participation because of her gender.

Erzhan worked to apply for a state scholarship to attend Dilyara's boarding school to train in the sport she loved and teach her so she may one day compete. The young Erzhan quickly excelled in the sport, training after school with the team and after with Dilyara.

Dilyara soon challenged the ban on women in the sport, and won in a Superior Court challenge based on the new Anti-Discrimination rules put in place by the then-Liberal government. Dilyara was allowed to participate, and was eventually chosen to spearhead the creation and recruitment of a mirror Women's Weightlifting Organization.

On the night of Dilyara's first Olympic nomination, Erzhan proposed to Dilyara. She gleefully accepted and thanked him for his tireless dedication to sport and securing womens' place in it. They have yet to set a date, but today- 4 years on from the proposal, Erzhan and Dilyara are going strong and united into these Games of the XIII Olympiad.

Magjan Ayatov: Dare Altaysk bid to host the Olympics?
Regular contributor Magjan Ayatov discusses the buzz about an Altaysk Olympic bid in the future, and proposes some new ideas to deal with the concerns.
Here comes the Altaysk Olympic bid Council debate.

The Altayski I am acquainted with are divided. Some welcome lots of jobs. Some fear decades of debt. Some wonder how they can afford to commit so much when they are so short of money and Altaysk could win an Olympic trophy for the number of empty commercial buildings.

Altaysk will try to insure itself against cost overruns, but look what happened in the previous Olympiad, where the $3-billion project got a $12-billion bill. The government had to take money from health care and police budgets. Yet another went from the estimated $13 billion to $49 billion.

What is the solution?

I think there should be a new pre-Olympic sport called OTOB. On Time, On Budget. Publish regular period scores on each part of the project. Hold each trades or other team leaders to account. Keep their colours and their captain in the public eye as they stumble on price or time or head for the home stretch.

And, start the actual games by awarding medals to those who keep their promises.

Is my idea too far over the top? Or am I just in good company with those who think they can afford the Olympics?

I guess we’ll see when the Altaysk Olympic bid debate happens after these games. Let me know what you think.

Director of Cybersecurity for the the Almasi Olympic Committee says he’s never seen a laptop
By Argrozan Malatov, special correspondent for the XIII Olympiad in Republica

Director in charge of the Almasi Olympic Committee's cybersecurity is in the spotlight for acknowledging he has never used a computer and making comments showing he has no idea what a laptop might be.

Cyber Director Temujin Uge, also in charge of coordination with the Ministry of Youth and Sport, was replying Wednesday to questions from independent and state reporters in an Olympic Press Event.

“I give instructions to my secretary and so I don’t put into a computer myself,” he said. “But I am confident our work is flawless.”

When asked about the recent cybersecurity incidents surrounding major Almasi social networks, Uge said 'laptop' was “basically never used” in the Committee's systems, appearing to not know what it might be.

Reporters laughed heartily at his replies, some admitting to hoping it was a joke at the time. Questioning and answers of this event were carried live on national TV.

With this type of press conference, Officials almost always get questions in advance. Often their answers are based on briefings from bureaucrats. In Uge's exchange, bureaucrats were seen rushing over to give him sheets of paper with information.

Uge, 59, a graduate of Altai University, was first appointed to the Olympic Committee in 2006 after a long tenure as a rugby coach for the Altaysk Aces.

Games of the XIII Olympiad: What to Expect

REPUBLICA - Anticipation abounds in Diarcesia's entry to the Olympiad in the XIIIth games as it sends more than 100 athletes to the event held in the Free Republics. Crowds of citizens have already traveled in advance to enthusiastically greet their country-kin in the opening ceremonies. Here are some of the expected highlights from the delegation.

Opening Ceremonies and Day One: See the Diarcesian sportsmen, led by the flag-bearer and veteran tennis player Eutaur Jordaniscus in the procession with their red cloaks and the lynx rampant. Later, the women's Rugby Sevens team and the sole demonstration eSports player "4mearison" will enter their respective group stages for a shot at the gold medal.

Tennis: Alongside fencing, the Team Diarcesian will have their highest chances at a medal in tennis. Eutaur Jordaniscus and much of the players present at the Mercedinian Open II will reunite on Day Two. Will they continue to amaze in the court, as they usually do?

Fencing: As the 'national pastime' of Odrioya, its inhabitants represent much of the fencing delegation, eager to test their skill versus the so called 'outlanders'.

Olympic Fever Is Spreading,
by Hannah Marshall, Olympic Correspondent

As we get closer to the beginning of the 13th Summer Olympics, nations from across the world are hoping for gold and glory in the Free Republics. This will be Cassadaigua’s first time in the summer edition in quite some time, they returned to Olympic competition in general for the winter games, last year. Cassadaigua will have one of the largest delegations out there, as they are participating in every demonstration event, as well. Megan Criscone, of the Cassadagan E-Sports Federation said she could not have been happier, “When they announced the event list, and the wide variety of E-Sports that would be contested, I was excited and thrilled but at the same time thought there was no way the OCC (Olympic Committee of Cassadaigua) were going to include us. Yet, Brianna (Kennedy, OCC President), called me later that afternoon and instructed me to conduct tournaments to find out who would represent us in each division. I was floored by that, and thrilled that we are part of this.” We mention the E-Sports, because most Cassadagans are unlikely to even consider them sports, let alone Olympic worthy, but the OCC wanted to be sure that everyone could be represented.

Brianna Kennedy explains the large delegation, “Cassadaigua is a sport loving country. We know that, and the world appreciates that. We have shown our versatility in sporting competitions, and that is simply who we are. If its sport, it’s being played in Cassadaigua somewhere. Doesn’t mean it is big here, but anything is going to have a following. So when I provided with the official event list and the generous limit of entries permitted for these games, I wanted to do them all. The Olympics are special, and I want to provide the opportunity for as many Cassadagans to participate. We even have horses representing us, how cool is that? I am so excited about the edition, I can’t wait.”

The Olympics are not all about medals. They are what we are all hoping for but coming here and being part of the amazing festivities is what makes it special. The opening ceremony will be spectacular, and eventually, we will be playing just about every summertime appropriate sport that one can think of. Many are known national superstars, but more are thrilled that their game or event is held on equal footing as all of the others. Still more are here in surprise that their event is even being contested at all. For those in a demonstration event, they may wish they could have a medal, but being able to compete at what they love against the greatest of the world is well worth it. Amid that group of athletes, there are remarkable stories of accomplishing great odds to get to where they are today. And that’s just the Cassadagan delegation. Every single nation competing has stories like that, and that is why this is so special. It’s not about becoming a fan of a sport you might not otherwise care about for a few days, its about being a fan of sport, in general.

After the opening ceremony, Archery, Sailing, and E-Sport competitions will be the first ones to take shape, so don’t be so concerned with only watching the women’s soccer (called football by many) match of the women’s football match (called gridiron by many) which are also taking place. We don’t expect to do much in Archery or Sailing, and the E-Sport competitions are probably not going our way as well. Let’s enjoy them anyway!

Vangazi Prepare For Early Competition

As the countdown continues to build towards Olympic Match Day 1, several Vannish athletes hope to make an early impact on the field. The Vannish delegation may be small, with just over 200 entries. They aren't in the games to push for a high medal tally. Any medals won by Imperial athletes will cement the athlete into the history of an Empire that appreciates every victory. Every bronze and silver holds weight in a nation where medals are more valuable for the sport represented, as opposed to numbers in a bucket.

This meant the selection of competitive teams say something about Vangaziland and the Empire in general. Every colony has at least a few representatives in these games.

Vangaziland has two athletes starting in Day 1 Sailing events with decent chances for success. Both athletes grew up around Blue Coast, Vangaziland. The waves are strong here, though the water can be chilly. The Olympiad team spends autumn and winter training in the Caribbean's Svennish Isles.

It was here where Cyrus Williams refined his windsurfing technique. "The hard work pays off with a trip to the Isles", Cyrus said. "It really makes things feel rewarding. I feel as if I've really pushed through development."

Ellen Chamberlain is also expected to run competitive times. A lot of sailing will have to do with conditions. If things go a certain way, Chamberlain can see success. Vannish Olympiad Sailing is a prestigious program that once trained Prince F. Vang into an Olympiad athlete. Vannish sailors once brought the van Eaux Royal Regatta's trophy to the Empire.

Francisca Lazio may also hope to take a chance at a windsurfing medal. She is a less refined rider than Williams. She still brings heart and plenty of Vannish luck. Lazio represents the territory known as Esportivan Vangaziland. It is easy to assume Mainland Vangaziland and Esportivan Vangaziland are the same. The Vangaziland most people think of is a few hours North of Esportiva. Esportivan Vangaziland has more of a Latin/Slavic vibe. The land is also known as Barnicea, famous for Imondria and the orange-roofed buildings.

Archery would be another opening day event. Vangaziland had two athletes hoping to make a mark. Elyssa Hill would represent in the women's individual. She is the winner of a competition called Miss Elf Vangaziland. The event is an athletic competition which tests both athletic and fantasy genre relevant skills. Hill racked up a great deal of points by completing ridiculous marksmanship challenges. She also had a great time on an obstacle course and had quick run times. Hill also famously won the cooking portion, by preparing the most tasty freshly hunted meal.

Her dexterity and timing is proven. She is not one of the world's best archers. She has an aura about her that makes her a fearsome competitor. Runolf Swift hopes to have success in men's individual archery.

Runolf carries the first name of a classic Vannish legend. Runolf Vang was said to be the first mixed-African explorer to return from New Gazi to the Vannish Mainland. He was the son of a Scandinavian explorer who had the blood of one of the Royal tribes. Runolf's mother was an African merchant with Royal ties of her own.

Runolf Vang was therefore the first in a mixed Royal bloodline which continues into Emperor Helios Vang and Prince Fritjof Vang today. It may have been such a historical name that gave young Runolf Swift an interest in archery. "I've always felt connected to the past", said Swift.

One major sporting event taking the field from day one would be women's football. Vangazi know the sport as soccer, having caught the American verbiage bug. The team is expected to be slightly better than average. The team has a few key players that can push the tempo. One player is a starting center midfielder for the New Gazi World Cup team. Carmen Jarlsdottir is both the engine of her team and a scorer. She can move the ball just as well as she shoots.

Defenders will need to gameplan for her. Katie Lafeson brings a great deal of technical skill to LW attack. She is left handed (and footed), so she is tailor-made for the position. Lafeson captained the Olympiad XII squad. This season she will play second fiddle to Carmen Jarlsdottir. Carmen has spoken out against an inter-team rivalry.

"Katie's views for the team are just as important as mine. She's a great leader on and off the field. My role as captain is to assume responsibility. If we don't do well, it's my fault. Katie can speak, have her say, and give advice". It seemed clear to all but Carmen that she really said the same thing three times. She actually meant to say it like that to prove a point. "But the responsibility for the team is mine."

"I'm just going to focus on each game", Lafeson said warmly. "I need to focus on my role in the offense. If I get any extra time, I'll should try to just enjoy playing in the Olympiad."

Vannish athletes seem to be hitting the field hard. Their teams seem prepared, if not outright motivated. The majority of Vannish athletes will have to overcome a talent gap to overachieve. There have often been athletes of average skill who rose to the occasion. One example would be Eric Wardenson in Olympiad XII. He won the gold in the cycling road race, beating several more talented competitors.

The athletes of Vangaziland Olympiad XIII would need to channel this spirit and hope to use elbow grease against the odds.

Cheerleaders Caught Bullying E-Sports Delegation

Much attention has been paid to the role of e-sports in Olympiad XIII. Vangaziland's gamers are not expected to do well at all. Most are familiar with Vannish games in general. They also just aren't as dedicated as gamers in many nations. Vangaziland invested much more time and effort into scouting athletes in more established sports. Many felt there were better gamers the Vannish could have sent. Some were mysterious, with tag names like RedTron 95. The entire Vannish gamer community knew there would be no true Vannish gaming team without him... Or her.

The Vannish team was still a sign of solidarity with the movement to bring gaming into the Olympiad. Vangazi would compete with the world's best and travel the world in the process. It should be paradise spent mixing with top athletes in the multiverse. Most gamers were selected from university gaming clubs. Progaming was not a major sport in Vangaziland, though many campaigned for it.

One gamer already struck gold by garnering the interests of Eva Csonka. Csonka is a freshman at the University of Esportivan Vangaziland. She met gamer Matt Theobold at a mixer for arriving athletes. It was a small event thrown in the Olympic Village. Csonka admitted that she didn't realize Matt was 'just a gamer'. "I thought he might have been on the swim team", she said laughing.

This drew ire from a covert group of Eva's teammates. They didn't want Eva to embarrass their highly competitive squad by dating someone on that team. It wasn't just that Theobold was a gamer. The Vannish e-sports team was one of the teams with the least highest chances for success. Only the male cheerleading team was worse.

"Eva is totally NOT dating ANY gamer", said Teana Lord angrily. Teana works with captain Stina Karlsson in her formation. She is a member in the clique of Stina and Raychelle. The Vangazi are very talented in what they do on the cheer field. Some say Stina is mad about the sport, forcing others to also drive for success.

Reports came out that cheerleaders Liz Marsden and Isabelle Hagelin confronted Theobold after one of his gaming practices. Cszonka was busy with team duty and Theobold was caught looking for her. Marsden demanded that Theobold hand over his meal stipend to be allowed access to Eva. Theobold eventually said he could spare a voucher or two.

Over the next few days, both Marsden and Hagelin came to collect. Theobold had a change of heart, refusing to give into the fierce demands. Things became public when 4'11 flyer Liz Marsden grabbed Matt by the collar and shoved him into a wall. The move seemed to at least showcase the strength the Vannish cheerleaders possessed. Unfortunately, the press would pick up on the event.

Marsden and Hagelin were both issued official warnings. If they weren't both collegiate athletes, they may have faced hefty financial fines. The next levy against a cheerleader may cross that line.

The fury of the cheerleaders also made national news after motorsport champion Jessica Franssen admitted the squad was "catty". Franssen and Jenna Vandersen share a room at the end of a hall occupied by the cheer squad. "Someone in the national delegation is trying to torture me", Jessica said about the living arrangements. Franssen and Vandersen were selected to bring maturity to the wing. Instead, it has only immersed the star drivers in a world of competitive cheer and college attitude.

"Cheerleading was the last thing on my mind growing up", said Jess Franssen. "I was more into soccer. I guess I was a bit more rough."

Csonka spoke her response to reports her teammates tried to extort her date. "I told those mainlanders to stay away from my man". Things seemed to get heated as Csonka drew regional differences into the equation. This could put her at odds with a team made mostly of Northern Vangazi.

The team is still united under grueling performances that force each different personality to come together. "We're a diverse crowd from so many different colleges", said Liz Marsden while flashing her most gentle smile. She sure tried to be swaying opinion away from tales of her shouting and slamming another athlete against the wall. "It only makes us work harder to be better." Bright cobalt eyes peered up from under darkened platinum brows.

Matt was asked about his feelings on his recent exposure. "It was worth it", he said about the shoving incident. Rumors say Matt has not given away any lunch money to this day.

Let the Games Begin!

*Overly Enthusiastic Olympic News Intro*
*Cut to a female newscaster framed by a crowd and a rind of screens showing various Olympic streams*

"Thank you, Temmerzov." She begins, "As you mentioned, I am here at the Almasi pavilion at the thirteenth Olympiad in Republica. Behind me you will see the large group of Almasi supporters that weren't lucky enough to get a seat to the opening ceremonies; but were able to get a taste of home as we serve unlimited Almasi brews and sedmaani! Thats right! Bottomless beers and snacks as we cheer on our hometown heroes during their entry to the Games!"

The newscaster glancing behind her at the screen, "The parade of nations has yet to begin, so why don't we see our Athletes who will be put to the test on the inaugural day! According to the official schedule, our first athletes will be:"
"The Individual Archery ranking rounds are held, with the Men's Individual athletes: Chinara Bazarova, Zulfiya Narzuqulova, and Zulayho Tursanova! And the Women's Individual athletes: Parpi Ghafurov, Elnura Aminjonova, and Raya Aniyareva!"

"Later in the day, we will also have the Women's Rugby Sevens Group Stage firing up!"

Ding-dong.
Ding-dong.
Ding-dong.

No answer. Special Agent Christiansen cursed to himself.

"Hello?" He called out, hoping for an answer.

Nothing.

He'd decide to knock on the door. Knock. Knock. Knock.

This elicited an answer. "Come in!" A voice rang out. Christiansen didn't know who it was, but it did seem familiar.

He'd slowly turn the door knob, and opened the door. He was greeted with a man. That man was Luis Ray, the flagbearer for the games.

"Hello, sir. I'm Special Agent Christiansen with the AIA. I need to talk to a Mr. Carl Perkins, please." The usual spiel. Too formal for Mr. Christiansen's taste.

"We're not these people's butlers, I'm investigating a series of terror attacks that have killed 2 and left 2 in the hospital, I think," He thought to himself. "There's no way we need to be this formal. Though I can't break down doors and yell at people like they do on TV. And besides, Perkins isn't even a suspect. Why would you send a pipe bomb to yourself?"

"Uh..." Luis needed some time to think. "I'm pretty sure he's in his room. His room is on the floor above."

Christiansen nodded. "Room number?"

Luis shook his head. "Nope. Just has his name on it."

"Got it." Christiansen went up the steps.

The same deal. He'd knock on the door 3 times.

No answer. "Hello? Mr. Perkins?"

"Just open up the door!" Luis yelled.

"Well, I don't want him to shoot me because he thinks I'm a burglar!" Christiansen yelled back.

"He wouldn't care! Besides, he doesn't have anything that you could steal!"

"Just... please leave me alone!" Christiansen yelled out, trying not to sound annoyed.

"OK, OK, I will." Luis left the area.

He'd knock 3 more times.

"You can enter." Perkins yelled out.

Christiansen entered the room.

"Who are you?" Perkins looked confused, until Christiansen flashed his badge.

"Am I trouble?"

Christiansen shook his head. "You are not in trouble. But I do need to talk to you. I'm Special Agent Christensen with the Amuaplye Domestic Terrorism Task Force.

"Why me? I don't remember any terror attacks..."

"There was a nail bomb sent here. It had your name as the recipient."

"The Olympiad Bomber?"

"Yes. He's killed 2 people, and has admitted to have wounded 2 others in attempted assassination attempts."

"Anything else?"

"We need to notify you. We will also give you a choice. Do you wish to tell your friends and family? The press probably already knows about it. They know about it before I even do." He was kidding about that last bit, but it did contain some truth.

"They do need to know." Carl turned to his computer.

"I'll give you privacy. I need to notify the Republican NOC." He'd leave the room, and left with everybody the feeling of paranoia, of fear, and of worry. Worrying if, once they return home, they will only catch a glimpse, before dying at the hands of the Bomber.

They shared that feeling with the rest of Amuaplye.

Hello, Sir/Madam.

We regret to inform you that a very severe threat has been placed on the Olympics in general, and the Amuaplye delegation in particular.

We are experiencing a series of letter bombings, including attacks on the sportswear brand that makes the clothes for our delegation, the Ministry of Sport, the AIA, and a cargo airliner whose destination was your city (The bomber attempted to attack the Olympic Jet, but it was put aboard the wrong flight.) He has also attempted to kill 2 Winter Olympians using booby traps. I am very sure that it is well known in Republica.

He has just recently, send a letter bomb to the Olympic Village in Republica. The bomb was intercepted, and safely defused. However, due to this, we are asking you to heighten security in any venues that Amuaplyean athletes will compete, and the Amuaplye Village.

I also will allow you to either disclose this to the media or not. As long as it doesn't impede our investigations into the matter.

The box containing the device also has a cryptogram, a 42-group Enigma code. Our Cryptology experts are currently attempting to decode it.

The code will be given if you wish to decode it.

And now for something completely different..
(Context: Prologue and Start of "Ace of Spades" trilogy found here.)

Previously on Ace of Spades,

We are shown the three stories of Emmanuel Jones, The Leader, and Keller Harrington. Emmanuel Jones is in the midst of hosting a vigil for a war he was a part of. During this, a mysterious portal revealed to be a hellgate appears in Main Nation Ministry, where a stranger appears where the Leader recognizes them as their long lost love. However, it's revealed that this stranger was actually now a demon that while the Leader was brought into despair, he eventually overcome this with a way to attempt to solve this crisis, as he finds himself being tracked by his own men due to orders that he cannot stop made by himself.

Meanwhile, Keller Harrington gets forced to be a secret agent, where she is teamed up with Agent Shell, a familiar face who helped prevent the crisis at Kahe Island. After training, Keller gives herself the identify of Agent Dragon and participates in an experiment of injecting a parasite that was controlling a child named that Keller once kidnapped in order to expose some corruption involving children with superpowers. Both Agent Dragon and Shell are assigned to investigate a mysterious explosion, which becomes the start of a breadcrumb trial to search for a mysterious comic book that seemed to predict future events. They assume it has something to do with a drug cartel that operates in a desert town outside the reaches of Main Nation Ministry, but they are unaware that a woman who proclaims herself as a "demiurge" has been pulling several strings. In a moment of bad luck, Agent Shell gets captured and dies later, while Keller gets thrown into a state of despair after a kid who she tried to escape with that reminded her of Richard gets killed. Being mistaken as assassinated, Keller gets revived by the parasite now controlling her mind and manipulating her emotions, where she launches a massacre on the cartel. She discovers the demiurge, but after they escape, Keller gets captured by Main Nation Ministry.

Now, the Leader has fled to Free Republics to blend in as an Olympics participant, where Jones and Keller are still in the nation where all hell is about to break loose.

The Familiar Stranger: Re-Introduction

The Leader found himself in a daze, as he woke up in his hotel room bed. The place they arrived in after their plane landed was crummy. After Daphne called up room service, the Leader had her attempt to buy him clothing to blend in the crowds, knowing that security monitoring the Olympic teams would be ordered to detain the Leader. Getting himself ready in the bathroom, Daphne opened the door where she bought him a schoolboy uniform, a trench coat, a hat, and a little cap that would make it look like a paper boy. "Two disguises? I mean, it's best seeing how my hair sticks out." The Leader said, looking at his new clothes. "What do you want to do with your uniform, though? I'm guessing you don't want it damaged."
"Of course. I fold it neatly, but I hide it under the bed, if a maid goes snooping."
"Where should we go, first?"
"Maybe if possible, we can try to chat with a major government official from another nation. Banija should try. Free Republics is busy with the Olympics. We can try to enlist some help, though it's obvious that people could die."
"Well, you see-"
"Ah! You can't say that name."
"Sorry, Napier." Daphne said.

As the Leader was observing his trench coat and hat in the bedroom, he heard Daphne humming a song, while looking outside. He let her continue, until she noticed him. "No, you can keep humming." the Leader said. "Sorry, I thought that seeing how it has been decades, I thought I do a bit of an oldie." Daphne said, rubbing her head in embarrassment. "It went like this, right. Ahem. We're only making plans for Nigel?" the Leader said, knowing the song. "I remember that, too! It's weird knowing that it probably doesn't exist anymore."
"Not really. I'm starting to remember the song. Culture probably was vaporized around that time."
"Hey, Napier?"
"Yeah?"
"I have been wondering about the multi-verse. Seeing how each nation is different than ours, does that mean they have different timelines?"
"Well, I know there is a main set of timelines that is supposed to depict current events in modern technology. But, I can say our timeline that our nation resides in had a point of divergence."
"Do you think people should know the truth?" Daphne said, where the Leader frowned.

My overall account that I use for P2TM and even for international roleplaying! MNM is a mysterious and extremely dangerous dictatorship filled with supernatural oddities, demons, militarized soldiers everywhere, and a misanthropic nihilistic dictator who doesn't give a damn. It's basically if the SCP Foundation got mixed with 1984.

Opening Ceremony to introduce BP Olympians
by Jason Quinn, staff reporter

When the 88 athletes and 57 coaches, officials and other personnel wearing the uniforms of the Olympic Committee of the Commonwealth walk out onto the track of the Olympic Stadium in Republica, they will be taking a step into history, as Team Baker Park will make their debut in the XIII Olympic Summer Games.

Leading the delegation out with the flag will be Drake Anderson, the middleweight boxer who is a corporal in the National Guard. His teammates, Lucius Crawford—a Petty Officer 3rd Class in the NSC—and David Porter will be in action on Day 2, in the preliminary round of the Heavyweight and Light Heavyweights classes, respectively.

In addition, the men's soccer team will face off in their first group stage match against Valanora and Aiden Harris will compete in the heats of the men's 400 IM, along with the women's 4x100 freestyle relay team attempting to make it through to the final.

On Day 3, the women's lacrosse squad will open group play, while the women's basketball team will have a bye in their seven team group, but it won't be until the end of the first week before track & field gets underway.

Security has been increased around the stadium and the Athlete's Village due to several incidents of terror-related bombings or attempted bombings in the nation of Amuaplye—the nation that will face off against the lacrosse team on Day 5--seemingly aimed at that nation's Olympic participants.

OCC Executive Director Lisa Maguire has been to view all of the venues where the BP athletes will compete and came away satisfied with what she saw. "They have put a lot of effort into the building and fitting out of the various facilities. They (the Free Republics) have a lot of experience in high profile multiverse events, so we are not surprised that the sites used for the Olympics would be of the highest standard."

Dave Carrey's Guide to the Olympic Sevens (Pool A)
Dave Carrey - Republica, Free Republics

So we return for another sevens tourney, ladies and gentlemen. But not just any sevens tourney but the biggest one in the multiverse: the Olympic Sevens. While not an official NSRB tournament for a number of reasons, it's still a very important thing to pay attention to. Not just because they're a part of the Olympics, where thousands upon thousands of athletes, both amateur and professional, take part either to bring glory to their nation, prove that they can overcome anything or do it for a bit of a laugh. But also because, along with the AVBF Sevens (see below), it seems to be the only regular rugby tournament, due to the massive delays between the last two Union and League World Cups. So I figured I'd book a flight to the Free Republics, grab some tickets to watch the tournament and maybe check out some of the other things going on there. It's only fair, after all.

Warriors kit. Because it's
a nice picture and
because I couldn't think
of a good first picture.
But before we got to that, let's take a look at what happened at the last AVBF Sevens, which I sadly had to miss due to illness. At least I managed to catch it on TV, which might not be the same as watching it live but it was still a good enough alternative. We won our first game, an easy 26-10 win over Blaneu. However, we'd go on to lose 26-19 to Savojarna in a game that we were just unlucky in, though fortunately a 29-19 win over the Natanians and Nosts meant we ended our day with a win. We began the second day with another win by that score, this time against Barunia, before we thrashed Apox 31-5 to just make it into the Cup stage alongside Savojarna. We edged out Neu Engollon in a 21-19 win where we just managed to snag a win thanks to a late try and conversion from Gary Toda. Unfortunately, we would be edged out ourselves when we lost 19-17 to Hutanjia, who'd finish runners-up; unfortunately, there wasn't a third place play-off but I had a feeling we probably would've had more luck there.

But that was last time. This time, we should have a bit more luck. After all, we are one of the top nations in the multiverse when it comes to sevens. We've won a few sevens tourneys, finished runners-up more times than we won and we've been a top five team for quite a long time, to the point where I can't remember when we last finished lower than that. But this is the Olympic Sevens. Anything can happen. Teams that wouldn't normally touch any other sevens tournaments, either due to lack of funds or not enough interest, can go on to win it. Teams that regularly do well in the AVBF Sevens and other such competitions could easily bomb hopelessly in the group stages. It can go either way.

However, before I start, I'd like to point out a couple of things, namely why this article's a bit different to my usual schtick. For example I'm going to make things a bit easier for me (as most of these teams only take part in the Olympic Sevens and no other tournament), I'll be explaining how they did last time (and ONLY last time, as opposed to prior Olympic Sevens tourneys) as opposed to in the last sevens tournament. Especially since that, barring one other team, none of the other teams in our group were in the last sevens tourney. Not to mention that I have no idea what the group draws are, so I'll be explaining them by where they are listed in the group. And, finally, I'll be using a paragraph each for both the men's team's opponents and the women's team's opponents, simply to avoid padding but also to make it much easier for me to get this article done and dusted. So here goes.

First up is Benjamin Mark but, since they weren't in the last one and, admittedly, I'm a bit too lazy to go through the archives so I'm not going to talk a great deal about them. However, next up is Liventia, a cricketing powerhouse but a bit lacking when it comes to sevens. And, indeed, they weren't in the last Olympic Sevens as well, which might be a bit of an uphill battle for them but chances are they've put in plenty of practice. Afterwards, we've got Electrum who fortunately were in the last Olympic Sevens, where they finished second in their group (with their sole loss being a 40-7 destruction by Taeshan) and finished second, which sadly meant they were unable to make it through to the next round. Next up is Krytenia, who co-hosted the last Olympic games but didn't send a team to take part in their sevens tournament. And, finally, we have Altai Almas, a team that, much like the first one, wasn't at the last Olympic Sevens. Yes, out of the six teams in our group, only two of them were in the last Sevens tournament.

But what about the ladies? After all, this will be their third outing and they're looking to improve on their performance at the last tournament, what with them having a 2-0-2 group stage record (two narrow wins against Darmen and West Phoenicia and two losses to Cocoabo Forest and Taeshan) which saw them relegated to third place; though they were tied with Cocoabo Forest, CF had a better point differential. -8 for them, -14 for us. Yes, this was one of those things where the only team that had a positive point differential was also the only team that went through. If you're wondering, Taeshan was that team and they lost 17-19 to Neu Engollon, who'd finish fourth overall. Yes, this was a disaster of a tournament for our ladies and coach Brittany is hoping to make a massive turnaround. Raquel Cárdenas is hoping so as well, especially since she's retiring from rugby at the end of the season.

Image
Coach Alex Brittany, seen here hugging Angelica Santiago after Elejamie's 21-19 win
against Darmen; despite a good showing, they were definitely eliminated thanks to
Taeshan's 31-14 win over Cocoabo Forest.
Their first game will be against Valanora, who in the last tournament finished in dead last place, with their sole win being a very narrow 21-19 win over Velstrania in their opening game. Next up will be Ethane, who were absent from the last Olympiad so they might need to do a bit of catching up. And, following that, we've got The Kytler Peninsulae, who also hosted a few events at the last Olympics but didn't field a sevens team. Then it's Baranil who, much like Ethane, were absent from the last Olympiad and, from the sounds of it, they're making their debut here. Here's hoping they'll stick around for a long time. And, finally, it's our old friends in the Natanians and Nosts, who were like Electrum's men's team in the sense that they finished second in their group and failed to make it through, though here they had a 2-0-2 record instead.

So where do I think we'll come? While I'm not cocky enough to say we'll win the Gold just yet, I believe that we'll have what it takes to make it into the knock-out stage. But who, in our group, would be joining us? For the men, I predict that either Electrum or Krytenia will be joining us in the next round. For the women, it'll definitely be the Natanians and Nosts as, out of the other teams in our group they're the only one who came close to a spot in the next round. Not to mention that they should be as good as their men's team, who'll be in Group D alongside Neu Engollon in a match that should be very close and nail-biting.

But wait, that's not all as it turns out that rugby league nines will be a demonstration sport here in this tournament, so an article by our very own RubiFaman, Elan Raetolil, will be covering that. Though the only problem is that nines doesn't even have the same following sevens has, which is why the ERF's nines line-up seems to be a bit last-minute. I can't complain as it has superstars from both the HBRL and the WRL but I'm not exactly sure if they'd have what it takes to grab a tournament win. Either way, she'll be writing her article up very shortly so keep an eye out for that.

Anything I should mention? No, not really. Most of the squad from last time are returning, either doing the same events they did in the last competition of a weight class very close to it. We've got the Troutman Brothers - Jonathan, Adam and Philip - representing us at chess in what will be their first international chess tournament for years. This should be amazing, especially since both Adam and Philip won a gold medal at the World Games a while back, with Jonathan just missing out on it thanks to a disappointing loss. Fernanda Dávila Altimirano's also there representing the ladies, though she hasn't been on form in quite a while so it's just a question of whether or not she'll be able to pull off an upset. And the World Cup of Hockey will be starting up again soon for those interested, although fans of both will find it hard which to pay attention to the most due to the importance of both. There's probably more but I can't think of anything else. Either way, let's all get excited for some exciting action, whether it be from the boys and girls of Coaches Kim and Brittany or from the hundreds of thousands of other participants who are hoping to bring glory to their nation. Let the Games begin.
