Meet A Random Cassadagan Olympian,
by Hannah Marshall, Concord Heights Times

I decided that to get a feel for what it is like to be an Olympian, I would walk into the Cassadagan section of the Olympic Village, and pick out the first olympian I saw that was not otherwise busy and get to know them. There would be no research to try and get one of our most successful athletes, or get one that one of the most “tear-jerking” stories of how they got to this point. I saw a young lady dressed in blue jeans and a “Pink Love” shirt wearing a Brattleboro Technical Institute baseball cap over long blonde hair, standing by herself as if waiting for someone, and scrolling through her phone. I had found the subject for my story just as long as she was willing to do it.

I went up to her, not to bombard her if she was busy, and introduced myself. She looked at me, knew who I was, and then realized that the man I was with would have a camera in the bag that he was carrying. She grinned, happy to be noticed, and agreed to be interviewed. I asked her to identify herself and the sport or sports that she is competing in, so that everyone would know who she is.

“Kelsey Hickey, trampoline.” She said with a smile. Another one of our gymnasts, so right then and there I had a possible direction I could go with if the interview fell flat and ask her about what she thought about Stacie Morrow and Cara Clements. In fairness, she participates in a different event within the gymnastic genre, so she might not have much of an opinion on them. So, I would look to avoid that topic, and I asked her to tell us about herself. You know, all that basic good stuff to get a feel for who we are talking too.

“I am nineteen years old and a sophomore at Brat Tech. (Brattleboro Technical Institute). I was actually born in Grande Mountain, and went to school there before college. However, Brat Tech was my dream school and somewhere I always wanted to go. I was very happy to be accepted there, and get in on a gymnastics scholarship, but obviously gymnastics is not one of those sports you can make a living on, so I major in Engineering, specifically with a medical focus.”

She had a glow in her eyes as she said that. Right then and there, I knew that I was not talking to someone who planned on making sports their life, and knew that they had to do more. That is an interesting discussion point, isn’t it? So often we hear about athletes getting college scholarships, but they are the ones in the major sports who are looking to compete professionally. For Kelsey, who is good enough at what she does to be representing Cassadaigua in the Olympics, she is well aware that she needs to hit the books in order to be successful. So I had to ask her about the balance between her studies and competing in Republica for the Olympics.

“That’s not really much of an issue, Hannah. It really just kept me from taking summer classes if I wanted too, but I didn’t want to do that anyway. It’s summer break right now, so there is no conflict. The tougher time was in the qualification events over the spring which took place during final exam time, or during mid term time. Some professors understand more then others. Some know that I am shooting for the Olympics and had a good shot at it, so I would get project extensions. Others would not allow for any exceptions.”

As I was conducting my interview, a voice came in over my earpiece to tell me that Kelsey actually has a very strong chance to win a gold medal in her event. Generally, I like it when the voices over the earpiece leave me alone and let me do my think, but this was a time where that on the spot information came in very handy. Kelsey doesn’t actually participate until day 17, so I asked her if that adds to the pressure, or makes the pressure less so.

“I am not sure, really. I mean right now, I know that I am still a long way away from competing, so I don’t feel any pressure at the moment. It allows me to enjoy the atmosphere, hang out, and just do what I like to do. I can meet a lot of the other athletes from Cassadaigua, and other countries. You can’t party so much that you get out of shape to compete, though. Right now, it’s mainly just having fun, keeping in touch with family and friends, and killing time.”

I asked her what she likes to do to kill time.

“Well, I go to Brat Tech, so I have that inner nerd,” (she laughs) “Don’t tell Stacie and Cara, but I like to play games on the internet, especially this game where you create a fake country and try to run it. Pretty cool, you have events and all that stuff and roleplay what you want to do. I am the one who has to stick a bomber in everything. You know because really, how could there ever be a story involving countries getting together without having a bomber involved.”

Yeah well, that is probably true. There is some stuff going on right now concerning other nations in that regard, but we’re here for sports.

Kelsey grinned, “Yeah, but there has to be a bomber in everything, in some capacity. How can we just talk about things and not involve massive explosions and loss of life. Otherwise, everything is just all rosy talking about peace time stuff. I feel like one of those video game nuts now in the first person shooter games. But it is reality, just look at what is going on now. If you’re not interested in that topic line, you can just ignore it, that’s why it is fun. Something for everyone.”

Looking to change the topic from the need to invoke tragedy in what should be peaceful fictitious events to the real life Olympics going on right now, I asked Kelsey about what she felt her chances of winning a medal are, and how much it would mean to her.

“I feel I have a good chance, but so do a lot of other people. I do think there can be a focus on other events within the gymnastics umbrella, but there is plenty of competition for me to overcome in my event. Winning a medal is important to me. It’s not life or death, but to be able to have the medal for the rest of my life, would be a dream come true. I’d love for it to be gold. We’re doing good winning silvers right now, and I am happy to see that. I think we have, like, the fourth most medals, out of everyone, but are not the high on the official medal board, because it’s a lot of silver.”

Just then, the person that Kelsey was waiting for in the lobby showed up. It was a young man, about her age, and he did not appear to be Cassadagan. Such is the glory and fun of the Olympic games, especially when you got a long time to wait before you actually compete.

Sydney International Airport, Amuaplye

The journey to Amuaplye had been a long one for DCIs Jan Vesnik and Dominika Kulic. Amuaplye was an outlier from their usual destinations across Esportiva, situated on its own away from the major sporting regions. They had made it though and were currently battling their way through the queue at customs.
Back in Mattijana, the pair were used to flashing a couple of IDs and cracking on. Having to travel abroad and wait, fairly, in a queue, with other people... that was a touch irritating.

Having shown their papers to an Amuaplyen official wielding the heftiest stamp Jan had ever seen, they scooped a pair of suitcases off the baggage carousel (the only perk of the large queue at passport control was that their luggage had beaten them to it) and headed for the bland tunnel with a red exit sign above it.

Before setting off on their 9 hour journey, Dominika had recieved a brief from Andreas Weinachter, the Mattijanan minister of justice. The two Polizei Petrovijanka detectives were looking for a police agent named Erik Christiansen once they headed through the sliding glass doors at the end of the corridor.

Jan looked up to see a cluster of people waiting for friends, family members or a taxi ride home. Amongst them were a pair of men in dark suits. Printed onto a sheet of laminated A4 were the names Jan Vesnik and Dominika Kulic. Jan walked purposefully over, Dominika in hot pursuit.

"Mr Christiansen?"

The Olympic Review: Day 6

MFO SPORT

By Katarina Markovic, Comedienne and sports writer

Onwards and upwards, is something some people say when they produce a mediocre result that was at least a little bit better than the last mediocre result. Onwards and downwards is what other people say when they set the world on fire in the heats and know they can't live up to the hype in the semis. I'll let you make up your own mind as to which way my writing career is heading.

The good news is that after a little bit of a slow start, things are truly looking up for Mattijana and that was summed up rather beautifully by Andreas Weiss, who won our first gold and his first medal with a brilliant performance in the 100m backstroke.

In my limited experience, a major part of backstroke is how far you can fling yourself off the starting blocks and how much water you can prevent from going up your nose afterwards. I can't vouch for the second bit, but the launch was majestic. Weiss spent more time in the air than any of his competitors and in doing so, used the laws of fluid dynamics (air slows you down less than water, as any idiot who trys walking in a swimming pool will know) to nip an advantage over the rest of the field. After that, he just swam for his life, which is less sophisticated, but mightily effective.
Stefan Stolholm and Sagaz Perez both finished 18 hundredths back in second for Vangaziland and Porabasta, which I can only imagine meant that someone had to rush about behind the scenes to find another silver medal. I wonder if they have three golds waiting somewhere in case there's a three way tie for gold, and where the other two go when there inevitably isn't?

There was more metal on top of the water for Julia Florana in the individual canoe slalom. She guided her vessel dowm the course just 22 hundredths shy of winner Raphäelle Hérbert from Kelssek and despite looking a bit cheesed off at first, the Olympic spirit eventually prevailed and she accepted her medal with a smile bigger than mine when someone leaves a cake in the kitchen at work.

It was a particularly wet day for Mattijana (get your mind out of the gutter) as Mattijana claimed another medal in the rowing. The quadruple skulls team, who won a superb and unexpected gold at the last Olympics weren't able to repeat their feat from 4 years ago, but did win a bronze at what is widely expected to be their last tournament as a group. In other soggy news, Naomi Windbrandt remains joint first going into the medal race of the women's windsurfing. With only one race to go, there can only be one winner unless something of ridiculously low mathematical probability happens, so that will certainly be a thrilling watch. Having won gold in Aeropag two games ago, she is bidding to be Mattijana's first ever double gold medallist, a remarkable feat given the competitive nature of the field.

Captain Alexandra Mikeljaniĉ praised her team after the medals ceremony, saying that it had been a "massive privilege" to work alongside "such talented and dedicated athletes" as her teammates. She also said that although things hadn't gone their way today, they had "fought as hard as possible" and would now take a well-earned break before deciding on their future as individuals.

I can't even hope to do the next man justice however, so I've let our shooting correspondent Marko Julenic do this bit. It was a proper tear-jerker though.

Marko Julenic on Niko Molotnikov

The most emotional moment of the day happened on the shooting range however as Niko Molotnikov, who won Mattijana's first ever gold medal 8 years ago, won silver in the men's trap. The event will be the last in which he competes individually and marks the end of a great career.
Molotnikov started off his competitive career in pistol shooting, taking his gold home from the Electrum and New Gelderland Olympics in the 25m event. A disappointing games in Paripana prompted him to switch to rifle shooting however, a switch that at the time raised eyebrows.

It raised even more after his comeback in Kelssek yielded not just no medal, but no shot at one either. You always got the impression those games came a little too soon for Molotnikov though. It would be the next set in the Free Republics that would see him at his best.

That's how it would play out too. Molotnikov immediately looked sharp in the heats for the men's trap, sticking himself third overall and avoiding a messy 5-way shoot-off for the final three qualifying places. His effort in the final fell just short of an inspired Phil Kelnoky from Kriegiersien, but got him into a shoot-off for silver with Maj. Dino Martinez from the Free Republics. Molotnikov would show his composure in that, finding the mark from his first shot before the home favourite crucially missed the target.

Molotnikov announced his retirement a week before competition began in the Free Republics, at the age of 42. Whether he will be one of Mattijana's most successful Olympians is another question, but he will certainly be one of the greatest. He's been a fantastic ambassador for both the sport and his country since day one of Mattijana's first Olympics and its partly thanks to him that it wasn't the last.

"Mr Christiansen?"

Christiansen was sitting at a bench at Sydney Airport, more specifically, Terminal 1. He was shaking his head at the paper he was reading. Why did the media always have to show the daily misadventures of the bomber? Once this guy's caught, they'll probably be 20 more that we also have to catch.

And also the fact that the Mattijanan detectives would arrive shortly. He checked the time tables, their flight probably should've landed already. Well, that is if he knew what flight they were on. All he got was "Sometime around 3:00" by his chauffeur. Well, it was 3:15, and he was sick of waiting.

And reading this stupid newspaper that was only going to cause more Olympiad Bombers to start. It would be like the 80s all over again.

"Mr. Christiansen?"

That interrupted his train of thought. He set the newspaper down. "Yes?"

Realizing who they were, he got up, reaching out to shake their hands. "Hello, you must be the Mattijanan detectives. Well, you've come to the right place." He'd flash his badge.

"The car that will take us to the scene is in the parking lot, not far from this terminal. I'll brief you on the case whilst in the car, if that's OK with you."
I'm a dude.
Also, call me Amuaplye, not Amuapyle, or Amu.

International Edition - Sport

The Unsung Heroes

Maya Escalona reports;

The twenty four hour sports news channels, the websites, the print media, they have to find plenty of content to keep the slavering sports fans interested. Football shoulders most of the burden. Tennis too plays its part. Volleyball has found a big audience and the Athletics and Aquatics leagues command vocal support too. Naturally those would be the sports that the Sargossan fan would gravitate towards. But over in Republica the footballers are making their traditional hash of their Olympic campaign, a 3 – 2 defeat to the hosts sending them to seventh place in the eight team group. And in the Tennis defeat for Xavi Valdés in the last sixteen of the Men’s event meant that there would be no Sargossan presence at all in the quarter finals of either the Men’s or Women’s Singles tournaments.

So while the big guns were spectacularly failing to fire SargoSport television producers were left scrambling about for more palatable viewing. Among their blue button coverage, amidst the endless dinghies bobbing about over on Lake Rydia, they found a focus. Coverage was swiftly moved to the Fort Capital Shooting Range where Estela Moya, the nation’s last archer standing, was leading Caroline Penskiona in the last thirty-two of the Women’s event. Even reaching that stage had been a great achievement for Estela, technically the lowest ranked of Sargossa’s three woman team, but here she was. And as an enthralled nation suddenly gained an appreciation for archery Moya’s opponent, the overwhelming favourite in that particular matchup, cracked under the pressure. A disappointing final end for the competitor representing Vakolicci Haven and Celeria meant it was the clearly stunned Estela Moya who advanced into the last sixteen, 104 – 103. Although a score of 104 is unlikely to worry the rest of the pack it marked a tremendous personal achievement and saw the young archer ushered off into the SargoSport studio to be interviewed in front of an audience of millions.

Fencing may not be quite as obscure, we have two medals from past Games apparently, but it’s hardly a hotbed of popular viewing. But instead of the blue button treatment, complete with unenthusiastic commentator, or late night highlights on Televista Sportiva it too was thrust into the limelight. In the Women’s Sabre, the least elegant and most shouty of the three blades, Maria Xirau knocked over Dagan Stephanie Winchell in the round of 64 and then edging passed Vanorian Yvonne Weisz to reach the final sixteen. Isala Revistre of Vekaiyu now stands between her and an unlikely quarter final place. While the footballers faltered again there was that rarest of things, a win in the Hockey! A dreary 1 – 0 win over Main Nation Ministry was celebrated like it was a medal winning effort. And from a side used to claiming the wooden spoon, why not?

And in actual medal news the evening session in the University of Republica Aquatics Center saw a double for Sargossa. Both Asia Navarro and Vivian Carvallo flew the flag in the final of the Women’s 100m Backstroke and while Carvallo faded badly in the final 30m Navarro just about held off the Dagan challenge of Brittney McDonald to take third. While in the 100m Breaststroke Iris Sainz also claimed a bronze medal. Helena Alanis took the gold, in a time that came within a whisker of taking Elina Lastra’s Olympic record too.

Athlete Spotlight: Liselotte Schierer

Walking through the small mountain village of Bad Wittlingen, you don’t necessarily get the sense that the town is the home of an Olympic athlete. Nestled on the slopes of the Mittlegebirge, Bad Wittlingen is home to 425 people, 2 restaurants, 1 hotel, and a park with a football pitch in the summer and a hockey rink in the winter.

It was in this town, however, 20 years ago that Liselotte Schierer was born. The third child in a family of 6 (4 boys, 2 girls), Liselotte was always considered to be the best athlete in the family. Older brother Robert was in the academy of Ehrenliga hockey club Stahlberg Steelers, yet claims his sister had more talent: “Whenever we played hockey in the winter, it’d always come down to her and I, 1 on 1….I lost more times than I won, that’s for sure!” Liselotte seemed more interested in other sports, however, and was at first a prominent skier at the nearby Oberwinden mountain ski resort.

The Schierer family has a long history in the town of Bad Wittlingen. A long line of miners throughout much of history, an association with the military is also clear. An Anton Schierer served in the old Teus Empire’s mountain corps in the mid-1800s, rising to the rank of captain. When the Great War broke out in 1890, little Bad Wittlingen was on the front lines. The brutal mountain warfare saw the deaths of millions of young people in our nation, but Gregor Schierer was not one of them. Liselotte’s great-grandfather, he served with distinction in the Imperial Mountain Corps (KMK) of the Teus Army. Gregor ended up a career soldier in the new unified Army after Unification in 1896, as did his son Leon. Liselotte’s father Otto served for 12 years as a young man, and the expectation was that his sons too would serve.

It came as quite a shock, then, to Otto, when it was only Liselotte who expressed her desire to attend the Officer’s Academy in nearby Stahlberg upon turning 16. Originally, Otto and Heidi, her mother, believed she would change her mind eventually, but Liselotte’s stubborn desire never changed. She laughs now recalling it: “Haha, yes stubborn indeed! I was very stubborn then - and now. But it was something I’d wanted to do, go out and try and make something of myself in the world. Nothing was going to stop me from doing that.”

Around the same time, Liselotte started accompanying Otto and her brothers on hunting trips in the woods surrounding Bad Wittlingen. She quickly earned the admiration of her family as a very good shot, particularly with a bow. “It was about then I realized that yeah, she’ll be fine,” recalls Otto. So, Liselotte then went away to Stahlberg to study at the Academy.

She quickly became noticed within her class, earning recognition as the top marksman in her section. Schierer also continued skiing in her spare time, which also earned her recognition from instructors at the Academy. Just 4 months into her education, she was recommended to be moved into the Mountain Rifles training program. The Mountain Rifles are generally seen as Siovanija and Teusland’s elite military force, experts in mountain combat, sharpshooting, and many other disciplines. Incredibly selective, Liselotte was able to pass through the rigorous basic training program with flying colours.

In her second year at the Academy, Liselotte continued to earn plaudits for her excellent shooting skills, with guns and the bow, which remained a part of military training as tradition. One instructor recommended her for the Military Athletics Program, usually reserved for promising young footballers or hockey players who are serving the one year’s required service. Through the MAP, athletes are able to continue to pursue their training as part of service. For Liselotte, an athlete skilled in several disciplines, she chose archery and biathlon as her primary focuses. These fit in well with her training with the Mountain Rifles, and her application was accepted.

One of the oldest traditions in the Defence Forces is the yearly Grand Hunt. With its origins in medieval times, the event has developed into an archery competition between all branches of the military. All soldiers have the option to enter, and Liselotte was one of the many who enter. The final event, taking place over a week in August each year, is incredibly popular and its final rounds broadcast on national television. Liselotte progressed swiftly through the qualifying rounds and into the Quarterfinal, quickly becoming the talk of the tournament. Winning her Quarterfinal, she went on to defeat 4-time winner Manuil Venev in the Semifinal. That set up a finals match with fellow Mountain Rifleman Dominik Bachmann.

Schierer defeated Bachmann in the final, becoming the youngest-ever winner in the modern era, and also the first ever female winner in the some 500 year history of the tournament. The winner of the tournament holds the title ‘Master of the Hunt’ for the year, a medal, and their cap badge, usually a white Edelweiss, is replaced with a gold Edelweiss permanently. Schierer went from talk of the tournament to talk of the nation, and was named Sportswoman of the Year by sports journalists in the country.

“That was when it started to sink in, haha, to be at that banquet with all those famous athletes and have my name be called,” says Schierer of the honour. Military athletes aren’t allowed to officially endorse products, but Liselotte has been granted permission to appear in several commercials, elevating her fame further. The quiet town of Bad Wittlingen now has a famous daughter, and is known now for more than just a battle some 125 years ago.

Sitting down with Liselotte in a Republica hotel room, a picture of Schierer the person emerges. She’s wearing her military dress uniform, despite no team banquet or special event being on today: “It’s very comfortable, and this interview is a special event in my opinion!” she says. She’s a very reserved person, and isn’t as adventurous as you’d think: “I went to see the Legislative building the first day, it was quite nice. That’s about it though,” she tells us when asked if she’d done any sight-seeing.

“It was very nice of him. He’s a very good person,” she says about President Joachim Fleiss, who was present for her Round of 64 contest, a 107-100 triumph over Cecile Frecado of Neu Engellon. On being a role model for many young people, particularly girls, in the country: “It’s nice. I like to think of myself as a very strong, independent person, and if people look up to that I’m happy.” When we asked her about media rumours of a possible relationship with footballer Thorsten Kramer, Liselotte blushed and said: “I don’t know how that got started! Yes, Thorsten is a very nice person, but I’m far, far too busy to even think about that. Balancing my career and my athletics is hard enough.” Sorry, Thorsten.

Back home in Bad Wittlingen, the townsfolk watch on with bated breath through each of Liselotte’s contests. The Round of 32 contest, a close 109-107 victory over the Vilitan Union’s Zelda Moraia, was shown live in the town square, which has been renamed Liselotte-Schierer-Platz for the remainder of the Olympics. When she takes on Lara Moraia in the Round of 16, the crowd is expected to be even bigger, and should she advance further, Bad Wittlingen’s population might triple. And they’ll do it all again in 2 years, because Liselotte plans on reaching the Winter Olympics for biathlon as well: “Of course! Why wouldn’t I? If I believe I can do something, I will do it,” she says with determination.

One final question now for Liselotte: what do you want to achieve at these Olympics? “I want to bring home a medal. That would be nice.” That would be nice indeed, Liselotte.

After flipping through the HD channels of V3, Vekaiyu's premier news network (formerly state-sanctioned, but said sanctions have been significantly slashed since Levinile assumed sovereignty several years ago), the television blinks and adjusts to each HD station. First few are news, sports news, the likes. Then some kind of pseudo-nationalistic programming featuring some kind of history of a particular province. Finally, on the last station is a kind of paid programming - a relatively common venture for the late-night enthusiast who strays far off mainstream television. It's here that one comes across a pair of vulpine salesmen, dressed in well-fitted suits, and practically screaming in the camera as it pans to a spread of sports cards. It's in Unonian, but you are fluent in the language and can easily decipher it to your liking, of course. You're also holding a glass of islovium with eskola on the rocks (we'll relate it to scotch and coke), because it's a Friday evening and you're quite the party animal.

"Alright, everyone, we are ready to hit the water!" A corny splash noise is heard in the background as the vulpine laughs. "And if you're still interested in the last lot, pleeease give a call to the number below on your television screen, because we're just about ready to run out, and the last thing you're going to want is to see that taken out of the system." The middle aged vulpine man slaps the table for added effect. "Alright, Yiisu, whachya got on the docket?"

"Tomasu, all I can say is I'm glad we're airing this late in the evening, because we will be losing money over this deal."

The main vulpine, Tomasu, nods and seems to bite his lip. You arch your eyebrow. "Oh yeah. Before I go to this next item..." He glances at his papers as he stacks them sharply on the desk. "Folks, last time I released a deal like this... I'm going to tell you how ridiculous this is going to be. Last time I did this deal, I did it for ℣59, and I gave you just one card. Just one card! Well, tonight we're going to do better than that. Tonight, we're going to give you fifteen cards, two of which are autographed!"

"That's right, that's right!" the man off the camera, Yiisu, adds. "All because the first game of the Underwater Hockey event begins tomorrow in Republic for Day Seven of this Olympiad."

Yiisu shrugs coyly. "Maybe the Vekaiyun athletes don't do well this go-around - it happens, we're only vulpine, just as the humans are only human, right? But this deal, this deal right here is going to last any Olympiad. Yiisu, give it a go."

The camera phases out to another camera, camera 2, as it pans over fifteen cards sealed in top loaders, each with a label at the top of the plastic reading the card and the card grade (from poor to gem mint 10). All cards have a grade of 9 or greater, and they are beautiful - sharp corners, black edges (that would highlight any condition issues), centering, gloss, and so on. And each card features a prominent player of the women's underwater hockey circuit - inserts from a set from this year that featured the entire Olympic squad. You remember collecting these cards a bit when you were a kid, but these don't really look like the cards you remember. The card stock is nice and clean, not brown on the backs. They look... almost professional? You take a sip of your glass as your interest is piqued.

"I can't believe - Yiisu, are you sure we can get away with this?" Tomasu scoffs. "Folks, I can't believe we're doing this. You're going to get fifteen of the 'Chasing the Gold' insert set issued by Kops..."

You seem to remember the brand name as "Topps", but no, it's Kops. That's right. Kops, before Tonruss stopped making cards and Vleer seemed to reduce their stock. There was another card company... Upper Drek? Was that it? Do they still make cards?

"... where each card is seeded at a rate of 1:19, for the year 2019. You get your star mid, Riyna Velestruviye, who was the league leader in assists last season for the Provinsk Red Fins." The camera pans to a rather stoic vulpine female, clad in her ear guards and suit, her stick with glove raised, and offering just the slightest hint of a smirk as she uses her other hand to grip the ledge of the pool. "Sayli Relasessi, the second-year phenom who broke the 20-20 mark, the forward from Calesu." She appears to be bending down toward the waters in an effort to sub in. "And don't forget the veteran guard, Xa Releteru, who really folks, really should have made her seventh all-star selection last season from Skendia." Another excellent shot of the player donning her fins before a match. All are wearing the Vekaiyun Olympic Underwater Hockey uniform, so the shots must have come from practice for them to be relevant to this year.

"We're going to do this, folks! Don't try to figure it out, just pick up the phone and dial, because you're not going to see this again for as long as we stay on the air."

"We could get fired, even!"

The camera focuses on Tomasu as he throws up his hands. "We could very well get fired over this, folks. Because I could easily stop right here and call this at ℣149. But I'm not going to do that! I will throw in last year's card that features Premier Levinile subbing in during the game versus Listonia! Granted, her appearance occurred at the end of the game and was... uninspiring to say the least, but we'll include the card!" The card featured a black-and-red border to differentiate it from the current set in question, and featured the premier sitting indian-style on a ledge. Really, with all the equipment on, it could've been anyone, but she does have gray fur, and the photographers at Kops probably know what they're doing.

"Graded at a gem mint ten will easily, easily fetch ℣50 at any trade show!" Yiisu bubbles.

Tomasu grabs the card as it sits in a top loader. "This is fresh from the pack - untouched by vulpine hands! And speaking of packs, we'll throw in a wax pack of the 2019 Professional Underwater Hockey Circuit. That's seven packs-"

"Seven!"

"From the Tiffany parallel set, with each pack valued at approximately ℣5 apiece." He can barely hold onto the packs in his rather small hand but with long fingers, so he sets them down next to the aforementioned fifteen cards as he walks around toward the spread, setting the other card down as well. "This is absolutely ridiculous... I can't believe they haven't pulled the video feed yet! Folks, in any of these packs, you've got your all-stars, your future hall-of-famers, your star rookies, game-used cards. Look at what they offer!" He grabs one of the foil packs and turns it around. "Game used fin seeded at 1:72. Game used glove, 1:99. Game used headgear, 1:120..."

As he lists the various 'game-used' cards, you suddenly remember hearing something about that. They're not an actual glove or flipper in the packs; rather, they deface history by cutting them up into very small pieces and place them in cards on thick stock - a way to "own a piece of history", they say. That's what's ruined the collecting industry, you figure. And why would anyone want a card with some kind of swatch from someone's headgear, all stained in chlorine and likely still laden in their greasy hair?

Tomasu opens a pack. "Twelve cards to every pack." The cellophane and foil perk your ears up, oh how you remember that noise from opening up a fresh pack of cards in your youth, hoping to get some kind of player to trade with your friends or maybe stick in the spokes of your bike. He quickly flips through some cards. "Yva Strovinari gold parallel!" He shakes the card for added effect. It has some kind of gold foil on it. "Gold parallel of the omni-sub from the Eldura Marauders!" More cards are flipped through. "Kili Nevilaru rookie! It's a rookie card! Folks you'd be silly to pass up on this offer! Yiisu, tell me, please tell me we can raise the price on this!"

The guy off camera hems and haws as Tomasu grits his teeth. He sets the cards down. "Tomasu, we can't turn back now, we've got to go!"

"Folks, my partner is refusing to relent! I'm going to have to put a time limit on this deal. Twenty minutes!" A clock begins to count down in the bottom-right. "Twenty minutes and we can't do this anymore! And that's if we don't sell out - the phones are ringing off the hook right now!"

You smile as you eye your phone. Nah, not today. You're more of a casual fan, anyway. Though... your old cards are probably still in the attic. Maybe... it wouldn't be a bad idea to bring them down and see just who you collected way back then. Tomorrow, perhaps. Tomorrow after the Olympic update, and if Vekaiyu wins their underwater hockey match, of course.

“Do you guys still want to do this?” Alon Megakales hoped he sounded as sympathetic as he felt. The day-after interview with yesterday's finalists will still scheduled – nobody had canceled it – but he didn't want to poke very sore spots.

Lilliana hopped to her feet. “Hey, Alon! Yeah, bring your crew in! Everybody's still looking forward to our next gold medal.”

Alon was so surprised that it took him a second to make sure he'd heard correctly. He led his cameraman and sound tech in, and they set up opposite where the four ex-finalists were sprawled across a sofa and a chair. Ohad and Nitzan straightened up and sat tall for the interview, but Lilliana and Tzochar seemed intent on taking it casually, very casually.

The cameraman counted down for the interview: three fingers, two, one. “I'm Alon Megakales, and I'm with yesterday's swimming finalists. The races didn't go the way we all hoped, but the team still wants to talk about them, so here we are.

“Ohad, I can see why you're pleased, so let's start with you. How'd it go?”

She jerked a thumb at Nitzan. “Like I said yesterday, at this level, the race is won by excitement. I was just .18 behind the gold medalist, which is nothing. If I'd seen that she was ahead, I'd have tried to push more. Anyway, I swam better than I did in the final, so I have no reason to be anything but happy.”

Tzochar nodded vigorously, and pulled himself half-way up from his slouch. “I checked the times: we actually all did better than we did in the finals. It's just that those Electrum guys... wow! They really poured it on! I don't know what they ate for breakfast, but we have to get some.” He seemed unusually pleased by his own joke; all the rest at least grinned.

“So I'll be back next year. I'm 19, so I should have a few more olympics in me, and despite what others believe, it's just the race and the skills. Next time, I'll have better skills. We all will. So we'll do better. Maybe somebody will beat us again, but maybe they won't. That's what keeps all competitors in the race.”

“See? Excitement! You just like fancier words.”

Tzochar shook his head. “Determination isn't excitement.”

Anyway,” Nitzan spoke quickly, trying to head off a possible argument., “I have three more races, so I'm not beaten yet. That's how the whole team is taking yesterday's results: 'We had an off day, but we'll be back tomorrow!'. But from what Tzochar said, we had a good day, but other people just lucked out and had a better one. Maybe it has nothing to do with us. Ioudaia's still in this olympics to win, and yesterday isn't going to change that.”

After giving a nod to Nitzan, Lilliana spoke right into the camera. “That's the line you want to take away from this: 'Ioudaia's still in this olympics to win, and yesterday isn't going to change that.'”

Sounds like a wrap to me! “Folks, you heard it straight from the team: we're still in it to win! So let's go back to the studio for a preview of tomorrow's events.”

Just outside the Republica Grand Hotel
A little later

Alon ditched his cameraman to intercept a rival. “Hello, Sophia. Coming back for more?”

“No. After yesterday's scoop, you're numerically eliminated. Might as well pony up that bottle now.”

Alon snorted. “It was good, but not that good. Anyway, the game's different tomorrow, what with track and field starting. Most of my team's already here, and I saw a few of the Pentapolis peeps checking in when I came in. There's even a couple of people from LaughTV here. Oh, and whatshername, the semipro running blogger.”

“Gabi Charis. But Champion has over a dozen experts coming.” She glanced at the time on her phone. “Should be here already. You guys don't have the expertise to compete with that.”

“We don't?” Alon held a mysterious smile.

“Contract talking heads don't cut it. Sports is Champion's life.”

“Chaim Alexias is just a 'contract talking head'?”

“He's...” She stopped to think about it. “Just one person, even if he did just miss the decathlon cut.” Alon's mysterious smile returned. “Oh, you have more 'secret weapons'? They're not sportscasters. A few big names will make a splash for a few days, but people want more than that, and you know it. But there's no reason for a long discussion: we'll know soon who's winning the ratings battle.

“And I have an interview to do. See you around, Alon.”

An Interview With Tatiana Kemal
By Lau Xue, Athletic Correspondent

Tatiana Kemal, shortly before yesterday's match against
Linda Lebanon of West Phoenicia

The Laeralian athletes in Free Republics for the Olympics are bedding at a chain hotel in downtown Republica. With no Olympic Village for the athletes at these 13th Olympic Games, the Ministry of Culture has provided accommodations, albeit on a shoestring budget. It's fitting for an Olympic delegation assembled, by all accounts, hastily and cheaply. Although Laeral's first Olympic entry, a delegation to the Winter Olympics in Prescott, was considered a success, it was uncertain whether the government would take up funds for a larger, summer delegation. As late as October, Culture Minister Sabine Auconie, whose portfolio includes athletics, was declining questions regarding the Olympics, telling the National Assembly during a Question Session that "the matter is under consideration". A team was assembled, however, and they have been competing, setting new firsts for Laeralian athletics left and right. The delegation, however, has yet to bring home a medal. The woman to change that may be Tatiana Kemal, a fencer and Serrielan immigrant who competes in events with the saber. Yesterday, she advanced to the Round of 16 in her event, spurring hopes that she may be the first athlete to bring home a medal for Laeral. Le Laeralien caught up with her at the hotel occupied by the Laeralian delegation.

Le Laeralien: You're known for being unusually exuberant after matches, flashing the 'v-for-victory' sign or punching the air after matches. What drives your competitive excitement?

Kemal: Of course, fencing is my passion. I've been fencing since I was eight years old, and it's always been a defining part of who I am as a human being. So going out onto the strip, I'm always filled with such a sense of exuberance. It's hard to contain myself.

Le Laeralien: So how did you get your start in fencing?

Kemal: My dad was a recreational fencer, a hobby he kept up when he immigrated to Laeral. I was only a baby at the time, so I obviously hadn't picked up the sword yet. He signed me up for a youth league at the local community center in our neighborhood, in Songshan. When I was little, I varied between swords- I found the épée too heavy, but I tried both the foil and the sabre. I took to the saber, and when I was in secondary school, I joined the school team. Things sort of went from there, and the next thing I knew, we were national secondary school champions.

Le Laeralien: Before yesterday's match against Marchioness Linda Lebanon, you referred to her delegation as 'spoiled'. Would you like to clarify your comment?

Kemal: First of all, I regret saying that. I was in private, talking to fellow athletes, and I was trying to express an uninformed opinion that I'd gathered just from following the news. I definitely made a mistake there, and I shouldn't have lost face as I did for our team. I hate the idea that my comment could overshadow the tremendous achievements, both on the field and off, that we see daily at these Olympics.

Le Laeralien: You've become one of the most recognizable faces of the Laeralian Olympic delegation. Is there anything you'd like to say to your fans?

Kemal: To my younger fans, I'd like to say that once you find their passion, you need to stick with it. Practice and work as hard as you can, because there's nothing better than getting up in the morning and knowing that you are doing the thing, the activity, that you live for. And also to stay in school, and put effort into your education. And to everyone else, I'd like to thank you for your support and for the mail and messages you've sent me. Every new message brings a smile to my face.

And to my fellow students at Sun Jia-wen NOU [National Open University]- let's go foxes!

Le Laeralien: Thank you for your time. Best wishes for your match against Ryzaev tomorrow- the nation will be watching.

Kemal: Thank you. It's an honor.

Mehmet Demirel was not expecting this. He had been defeated by Kennex Wilisii of the Vilitan Union. On a normal day, he could've performed much better, but today he was feeling what Sara Kozan had felt when she lost her match. He, too, could not stop thinking about Sara. Maybe if she hadn't revealed her feelings like that, Mehmet would've won today's match. But she did and so here we are.

Kerem Yusufeli, on the other hand, won his match. "Congrats," Mehmet told him, "I guess you're carrying the torch now." He was referring to the fact that Kerem was now the only Anollasian player left in the Men's Singles event. "Shame we don't have any players left in Women's Singles though." Mehmet added.

"At least some of our women are getting medals," Kerem replied. "Like that one in wrestling...what was her name?"

Mehmet tried to remember, "Hmm...Henriette Marteau, I think."

"That's the one! Anyway, I saw the rerun of that event and it was wild! She was practically a bear!"

Mehmet laughed at the thought. After a few more minutes of chatting, he wished Kerem success on his next matches.

Sara was practicing for the Mixed Doubles event, trying to combat against a tennis ball machine. She started off fine but at times she slipped into a daze, thinking about Mehmet, before being pelted in abdomen by a tennis ball. She quickly came back to reality and started swinging, but now her abdomen hurt a little, so she turned off the machine and took a break.

Mehmet came in, finding Sara on the bench. "What are you doing? Come on, let's get practicing!" Sara, having just sat down, moaned before getting up.

Now that her partner was here, she could better prepare for the event. After the machine was turned on, they started practicing. They've practiced many times before and in this practice session they still haven't lost their edge. But things fell apart when, at one point, Mehmet and Sara both reached to get the ball. Mehmet got the ball first, but once he swung his racket, he couldn't help but turn to look at Sara. And Sara reciprocated by looking back at him. They were smiling as they found themselves in a state of bliss, unaware of their surroundings. They both took steps toward each other, looking deep into each other's eyes. Everything felt much slower, as if time was dropped into a bucket of molasses. With synchronization better than any synchronized swimming team, they moved in for a kiss before they were interrupted by a tennis ball whizzing in between their faces. This was enough to wake them up from their bliss. Time was now back to normal, with the tennis ball machine still spitting out balls. They didn't say anything, but Mehmet and Sara briefly communicated using their eyes before getting back into the practice session. The non-verbal conversation was essentially as follows:

Mehmet: I believe in you.

Sara: I believe in you too.

And now the fog was lifted. Instead of falling into a daze, the two fed off of each other's energy and support, working together to defeat the cold-hearted machine. They became very energized, swinging like crazy, with Mehmet accidentally hitting the machine with a ball. "Whoops." That was the ultimate blow to the machine, as it ceased to spit. The machine was defeated, though it was actually because it ran out of balls to deliver.

The two looked at each other again and laughed. Next thing they knew, their lips were locked into each other. Though they enjoyed it, they also felt like there was something wrong with what they were doing. We're tennis partners, thought Sara, this isn't professional. Mehmet also had a confused little voice inside him, How did this happen? How could you let yourself fall like this?

Mehmet let go. He said, half-jokingly, "Alright, that's enough practice for today."

Amanda Chatterman, leader of The Animal Justice Party and a member of the West Phoenician House of Representatives has been forced to condemn the very same group she only endorsed a few days ago, which has caused a backlash against the Animal Justice Party.
The animal rights Centaur Club which the member of Congress encouraged people to get behind are currently on the run after a vicious assault committed against a West Phoenician Equestrian family member. Emily Woods whose aunt was attacked called the group “cowards” and “lunatics” the West Phoenician Equestrian team has never and would never commit horrible abuse on a horse, the horse was like family.
Amanda Chatterman apologised and stated she would ensure all her facts were correct before she endorsed another group again. She claimed she had no idea they were violent.
West Phoenicia had beefed up security at the Equestrian Dressage Grand Prix and the Horse Racing to hopefully avoid further violence.
The leader of the Centaur Club is Ash Davies, a university student with a history of far left associations. He is a 6’0 Caucasian with shoulder length blonde hair, Brown eyes and weighing roughly 90kgs and has a tattoo of a cat paw on his left cheek. The public are advised to avoid contact and call the police if seen.

Controversial Sabre fencer Tatiana Kemal of the nation of Laeral has voiced some criticism of athlete
Marchioness Linda Lebanon during their meet where Kamal ended Marchioness progress with a result of 15-10.
A post game interview had Kemal label the aristocrat and other West Phoenicians spoiled brats.
While the Laeralian Olympic Council was quick to chastise their athlete and Kemal herself was quick to apologise for the disrespect and dishonorable attitude, the Marchioness was quick to add her two cents in.
Linda Lebanon is the 4th Marchioness of Ammon Land in Lower West Phoenicia, and 4th Baroness of Lower Ammon Land.
“One would expect this from the lower class, fencing is a long time fine and noble sport. It is not a sport that alot of people are attracted too and it's not a sport that usually attracts peasants. So Miss Kemal must have money somewhere, so it's kind of a cheek for her to label her opposition a brat when she probably has the same privilege. Just because someone can have anything they want it does not make them spoiled, Miss Kemal may like to avoid Vangazi propaganda who dislike the West Phoenician royalty because they actually have royal blood in their veins as opposed to them having a king who is little more than a barbarian.
The only spoiled one here is Miss Kemal’s attitude. One has the ability to be a gracious winner or act like a brat. She choose the latter in her actions towards me. A West Phoenician finishing school would certainly give her some manner.
Reports also suggest she is a Serrielan immigrant, if this is true, is she a citizen of Laeral? Should she be entered if she is actually not taken the Laeral citizenship test and passed?

In other news Rowena Roxborough one of our silver medalist winners in the 400m Individual Medley at the XII Summer Olympics in Kelssek and Vekaiyu has been rushed to hospital after her performance in the 200m Individual Medley ended with her finishing 23rd overall and her performance in the 400m placing 5th in the final. Rowena had pass out in the changing room from exhaustion and anxiety where she was quickly rushed to hospital. A close friend said the Aquatics coaches are pushing their athletes hard for a win in the pool and many swimmers are at breaking point. West Phoenician aquatics coaches have denied this is the case, saying they train swimmers to be the best but it is not their fault if a swimmer is an overachiever and fails. We have psychologists as part of our support staff and they will speak to her over the next few days.

Kalosia u l'Olimpiade is brought to you by Lë Punto Kotidianu.

Sailing: Armandi, Veranu fail to advance to finals

In Sailing, the 10th, 11th, and 12th races of both Men's and Women's Windsurfer were held today. Kalosia was represented in both races by Klaudio Armandi (Men's) and Maria Veranu (Women's). Following the 12th race, the top 10 in the overall standings were to qualify to the final race, where medals would be awarded.

Armandi, who achieved his best placing of 3rd in his first race, came 37th, 34th, and 27th out of 37 athletes in today's races, and finished 32nd overall, 22 places short of qualifying for the medal race.

Veranu, meanwhile, achieved her best placing of 6th in the third race, and today came 12th, 27th, and 27th again. In the overall rankings, she finishes 22nd, unfortunately crushing any hopes of winning a medal in this event.

Fortunately for Veranu, she stil has hopes of winning a medal, however bleak the chances, as she is also competing in Women's Heavyweight Dinghy and Women's Two-Person Dinghy along with Anita Morande. But sadly for Armandi, he will have to go home empty handed as he has completed all the events he is set to compete in.

Tennis: Mata, Kaľat Advance to Quarter Finals

The stakes are even higher now that Kalosian tennis players Armani Mata and Mariza Kaľat have advanced to their respective quarter finals. Mata defeated Electrumite Greg Meares in both games of the Round of 16 match, a rather easy victory.

The same, however, cannot be said for Kaľat, who played three matches against her opponent Karina Gerard from Neu Engollon. The first one was a rather tense match particularly towards the end when the two were tied 5-5. But Kaľat was able to break that, and eventually won the game with a score of 7-5. Despite this, for whatever reason she appeared to be unable to defend herself, being defeated 0-6 by Gerard, prompting questions from fans watching in realtime, both in the arena and at home. Kaľat managed to recover her stamina and defeated Gerard, also with a score of 6-0.

Now that we have reached the quarter finals, fans are optimistic but admittedly a bit nervous. Although there are less athletes in it, the remaining opponents are all very skilled and have just as good a chance of winning. There are fears that Kaľat will repeat today's sudden drop of performance in the second game, but with more disastrous consequences. Whatever happens, Kalosians are hoping for the best, and the two may receive a hero's welcome once they return, depending on how other athletes fare.

Armani Mata will play against Samuel Gates, who is also from Electrum, while Mariza Kaľat will play against Dominika Lisicki from Mattijana.

Opinion: We Send Our Best to the Olympics, What About to WorldVision?

The image of Kalosia as a powerhouse at the WorldVision Song Contest has been fading, and is now becoming more apparent. The 15th-place finish of Jasminë Meier-Fernandës may not seem very bad when you consider that our worst placing was 18th, but with only 21 other entries to compete against, many nations still opted to send their points to other countries which placed higher. It does not help either that many regular participants were absent from the Ylfa, Talvezout stage, including Tödlichebujoku, who regularly votes for songs within the same genre of our own Travelling With You. Fans have pointed out that this is Kalosia's first finish on the right half of the scoreboard, and this follows a downward trend, after Shalissa's In the City came 12th, low for a country that regularly finishes within the top 10.

The question is, why isn't RTVK doing the same thing that the Kalosian NOC is doing, and sending only our best to the WorldVision Song Contest?

We've seen in recent days our tennis players Armani Mata and Mariza Kaľat advance to the quarterfinals of tennis, defeating many other world-class athletes in the process. We have skilled internet sensation Massimilian Dalesso competing as well. And many of our talented athletes are yet to compete in their respective sporting events. It follows, therefore, that Radiu-Televižio Kalosia could send our current up-and-coming artists as well as big names to the WorldVision Song Contest. Whatever happened to Ricky Alain, who we last saw at Monterra '43? And Simone Gallas doesn't count, as he peaked long ago. [CONTINUE READING]

Masimilian Dalesso put down his phone as he brought another spoonful of cereal to his mouth. The BMX Cyclist, who is also a popular VidTuber back home, had just finished reading an article on Lox Populi (Kalosian opinion blogging site, similar to Medium) critical of Kalosia's recent low finish at the WorldVision Song Contest, contrasting the handling of the contest to the Olympic Games. Although it wasn't the worst placing the nation has achieved per se (Kalosia's lowest placing would be 18th at the 24th edition of the show), it was the nation's first time ever on the lower end of the scoreboard, and having competed near-continuously for almost 50 editions, this was quite a big deal.

Although Dalesso had not been a big fan of the contest himself, he started casually following it after his cousin Rian performed himself at the 54th WorldVision in Ekoz. He's since made an effort to watch the show every time it rolls around. He found himself liking many of the songs that other countries have sent, including some tracks from his nation's own repertoire.

During the most recent contest, Masimilian, who also goes by Max, was a bit late to turn on the stream and thus only started watching halfway through the first song of the night. It hasn't been a week since the show, and he still remembers the first thing he saw being the icy grin and cold, purple eyes of the first entrant, the Leader of Main Nation Ministry. Being the first song, he (and the general public) had somewhat better memory of it than some of the following entries.

Although Max found the Kalosian entry to be atrocious, he ended up enjoying some of the other entries, such as Polkopia's MJM, Pan-Asiatic States' Sandugo, as well as eventual winner Les Dahlias Noires from Nekoni. He was quite happy to find that one of the songs he voted for won, and after the show was over he just carried on with his night. After all, he's just a casual follower.

Well, after Max finished his breakfast, he left his hotel and headed out for a quick run. Just as he stepped onto the sidewalk, a familiar purple-haired figure rushed through wearing what looked like a nice white double-breasted coat, a black-and-white checkered bandana, and just an overall nice look. "Move, I'm late" he aggressively declared as he shoved Masimilian out of his way. Pissed, Max whipped out his phone and took a picture of the dude. But by then, he'd gone quite far, and Max couldn't get his face on the camera. Defeated, he went for his run as planned.

Even after he came back to the hotel, he couldn't stop thinking of today's incident. There was just... something familiar about that figure. As if Max had seen him somewhere. Had they met before? Doubtful. While waiting for the elevator, he checked the news on his phone and saw the same headline on WorldVision he read earlier. Then it clicked.

After a quick image search, he became sure the person he bumped into was the same figure staring into his soul when he tuned in to watch WorldVision 70. He was still rather confounded by this, but he was eager to tell his friends. In fact, he was eager to tell the world. After a quick shower, he set up his camera to record a planned video diary episode where he updates his several hundred thousand followers on his life in Republica as an Olympic athlete. But this time, it came with an unplanned twist.

The Familiar Stranger: 1984

The Leader looked out his window, as he checked to see if any of the agents from the Northwest have known their location. "Daphne, we should officially prepare on heading back to Main Nation Ministry. They might have eased up on security, after it has been a while." The Leader said, as Daphne was nibbling on some meat from room service. "Napier. I have a question. You think they would want to know what happened? Before it all?" Daphne asked the Leader, where he didn't say a word. "Well, I'm not taking about the Black Line war, I'm just talking about the-"
"The war that started it all. We're lucky we're not a part of it. Still enough casualties to make a landmark out of."
"But we were only young, though."
"Not young enough to forget. We were still kids who had to be lied to about what happened. From what I understand, the nation is operating under a possible timeline and a divergence point. Seeing how the divergence point could have happened about around 3-30 years average depending on when it happened, I can say that the decade that had led to it ending, we were still in the grounds of colonization."
"But what about the-"
"Let's not get into that. The point is not everyone in Main Nation Ministry knows of the first war. It's been decades and it's out of the so-called history books that I have in the schools." The Leader said.

As they were walking, Daphne looked a little feverish, until a red glow briefly appeared on her eyes. "Oh dear." "Daphne? What's wrong?" the Leader asked nervous. "I just felt energy similar to the portal. It isn't here, but I can sense it getting powerful back in Main Nation Ministry." Daphne explained, pushing back a fang. "We need to get out of here. We can convince a pilot to fly us there! Let me get my outfit on! Don't act suspicious!" The Leader explained, as they immediately left the hotel, checking out first. Since Daphne didn't look suspicious, she just wore her typical red jacket and yellow apron to which no one seemed to take interest in. The Leader, meanwhile, was wearing his trench coat and hat, though he felt it was necessary to wear his dictator's uniform underneath. "So which way is the airport?" Daphne asked him. "Let me check." he got out a map and checked to see where they were. "We need to cut through some hotels! It's the quickest way to get there!" the Leader explained, as he and Daphne walked alongside the crowd.

While he was passing by a bit of a crowd gridlock, someone was running by and accidentally rammed into the Leader. "Gah!" the towering figure said, as both the Leader and the man were on the ground. "Do you mind? I'm trying to get somewhere." The Leader said, until he recognized the man, who was towering over him like a giant tank. "Leader?" "Ryuu?!" The Leader said, as his hat was off, making his full head visible to him. "Leader! It's you! I'm here to make you proud! Let me help you out of that drab-looking outfit. There you are!" Ryuu grabbed the Leader's trench coat, ripping it off to reveal the Leader's uniform. "Ryuu, no! I'm wanted!" the Leader blurted out, where Daphne realized the Leader was in trouble. Upon glimpsing Daphne's face among the crowd, the Leader immediately gestured to her to run, which she immediately tried to escape the crowd. "Wait, I don't understand?" Ryuu asked the Leader, where he looked mad. "Let me go or you're fired!" the Leader screamed, where after being let go, the Leader took off running, shoving past the crowd. The Leader found himself running near a hotel, where trying to past a man who was standing on the sidewalk, the Leader compulsively said to the person, "Move, I'm late!"
Image
The Leader ran to the airport, where he can immediately recognize it. But where was Daphne? "No. No. No! Damn! I had the map!" the Leader thought, as he realized Daphne was lost in the city. It wasn't until several familiar soldiers arrived was when he realized he been caught. "I'm not having my memory erased! You hear me!" the Leader said, as even though hand-to-hand combat wasn't his preference, he was ready for a fight. "Leader! Thank the many moons! We need you!" one of the soldiers said, panicking. "Leader, your service is needed!" another said, in a nervous tone. "What's going on?!"
"Leader! We came from Main Nation Ministry with General Emmanuel Jones's orders. A full-scale anomaly has invaded the nation!"
"A portal is unleashing energy unknown to science into the city! It has spread out from the forest sector! Seismic activity is happening and we have been rushed here, because the scientists at Ministry of Science are claiming that another portal might appear within the city!"
"Wait, we need to get Daphne! We gotta-"
"Leader, there is no time, your presence is needed!"

"Wait, what are you doing!? Stop! No! I know where she is! She's here!" the Leader was eventually forced to be taken, as a soldier strapped some handcuffs around his hands. "Leader, we can't have you running away from us when we need you! We believe you! So we can't have you be yellow!" the soldier said, trying to give the Leader some hope, yet the Leader only heard a complete lack of it. With the Leader in their possession, the soldiers proceeded to escort him to the airport.

Dereliction: The Tower

"Give me a visual! The end of days is upon us and the nation would be destroyed along with one part of the multiverse!" Jones demanded, as soldiers and members of secret police were having people leave the streets to seek shelter indoor. "In the shelters! This is not a drill!" a warning which was being yelled by a demanding soldier. Jones tried to escort several people from a monorail, until something caused the earth to shake. In the distance, the portal let out a pillar of light, where the earth rumbled in response. "Jones! We're picking up seismic activity!" a voice came from his walkie-talkie screamed. "Get people in the shelters! That's an order!" Jones demanded, as a small aftershock followed. "Jones, we are getting reports that a second portal has formed!" Truman said through his walkie-talkie. "What?!"

Jones arrived on-route, where Dorbi Truman, along with several other soldiers were standing outside of Catharsis Plaza, a large building known for having a huge main hall. "What's happening?!" Jones demanded from Truman. "Several soldiers have reported that there is a second portal appearing in the Catharsis Plaza! The basement to be exact! I need you to send in some squads to deal with this! We gotta close the portal, as whatever is inside can outnumber us!" Truman demanded. After several reinforcements arrived, Jones, Truman and the soldiers entered the building, which has gone empty. Truman entered the main hall and looked up at the many balconies that were above him. Meanwhile, Jones was in a security room, where a soldier was overlooking the camera feeds. "Sir, I have no information on the portal, yet. It might be forming on the floor of the basement. Nothing down there, expect a lounge, but the camera feeds are getting fuzzy." a soldier explained. It wasn't until Jones caught a glimpse of something on one of the monitors was when he had the soldier examine it.

"Who is that?" Jones said, as he noticed a blue haired woman in the lounge. "Is that a civilian?" "No. It's someone worse."

"Truman, I'm sending in a squad to the basement! I'm coming with them, also!" Jones said to Truman, as he tried to prevent him from doing so. "What are you talking about? The portal might appear at any second!" "I know Harrington was right about something, but I'm trying to avert this threat like everyone else!" Jones said, as him and a squad used the stairs to use to head downstairs. Entering the lounge, the squad entered first to secure the area, before they gave Jones the all clear. "Jones, there is no one down here." the squad member said, as Jones entered the lounge. "Where did she go?" Jones looked around, until he heard movement coming from the stairs. Arriving from the stairway were several agents from the Northwest, which they didn't look happy. "Jones! You're under arrest by Steinberg's orders from being under the possible influence of memetic activity!" one of the agents stated.

"You can't arrest him, you don't even have any evidence to support that!" the squad member said, until an agent tried to shoot him. Immediately afterwards, the lock down security protocol appeared in the building. The doors were electronically shut, where the lights immediately went dark, before a red emergency light covered the room. "Jones, get down!" a squad member yelled, as Jones took cover behind a couch. In the midst of the gunfight, Jones saw something on the wall in front of him. A fire ax, looking brand new. He was going to need that as a victim. Running towards it, he heard someone yell a single word that Jones realized he was going to possibly die.

"Grenade!" In a moment, the room was filled with a bright light where Jones was shielded by another squad member. A piece of shrapnel and a bullet went flying towards the soldier, as he served as a shield for Jones.

Jones was on the floor, nearly almost losing consciousness. He felt his clothes and face were stained with something. He looked down to see that the squad member was dead. Several wounds were visible on his body. Jones stood up, as he surveyed the scene around him. "No..." Jones realized he was one of the few that were still alive in the room.

Men's Nines Round-up
Elan Raetolil (aka RubiFaman) - Republica, Free Republics

So this was a bit of a surprise. Not necessarily us getting through but who went through along with us and who they eliminated. And while that's par for the course considering that this is the Olympics that we're talking about, there are some moments that you'll never expect no matter how much you prepare for them. From the 27th World Cup of Hockey, which was the second time we've been in that tournament, we had that 6-5 win against one of the best teams at the time who'd then fail to make it through, much like what happened here. We even managed to win the 29th edition with a 2-1 series win against what was Gregoryisgodistan at the time but is now known as South Covello. And does anyone remember how the Eden Rock Red Vees were bottom of the table halfway through the season a few years ago, only to finish in the top half and make it to the play-offs; sure, they ended up losing the Ꞅ1,000,000 Game to the Crown Manor Princes 25-12 but it was still a good run. But enough jibberjabber, let's recap the group and then tell you what I meant.

As previously mentioned in my last article, we lost our opener against Mattijana. It started off alright for us, with us forcing them to turn over the ball just 10m short of our try line to prevent them getting an early try, followed swiftly by a try from Ryan Pritchard and a conversion from Raul de Vargas to give us a 6-0 lead. Unfortunately, thats where the fun ended for us as, shortly afterwards, they'd level the scores with a try and conversion of their own. And then another one shortly before the break. And a third try and conversion sometime after the start of the second half. Fortunately Paete AEtomir managed to break their streak with a try of his own, which also saw a successful conversion from de Vargas. And, to put a final nail in our coffin, they scored one last try shortly afterwards; though the conversion missed, their fly-half made up for it with a successful penalty just before the final whistle. Final score? 24-12 to them. A disappointing opener but, since we once beat them 38-0 in union sevens, it's nice for them to come out on top for a change.

However, managed to recover quickly with a win against Ethane, who was also in our women's sevens group but I'm sure Dave's already talked about that. We got an early brace of points with a penalty from de Vargas and then, shortly afterwards, a try and conversion both from the same man. And, though they scored a try sometime after, they fluffed the conversion and the score would stay 8-4 for the rest of the half. Shortly after the start of the second, they'd score a try to level the scores, followed by a conversion to give them the lead. However, I'm not sure if it was the boys trying to avoid a repeat of the day before or if Ethane became complacent but we saw a massive comeback afterwards. First up, one of their players (and I sadly can't remember who it was) got yellow-carded for a particularly back tackle on Nico Eberhardt. Shortly after that, Jason Saunders regained the lead for us with an amazing try and de Vargas would give us a couple of extra points. And finally, just before the end, Paul Webber just managed to avoid a sixth tackle and press it down onto the ground for a try, which also got converted by de Vargas. After one last tackle by Chris Broadrick, the ref blew the whistle to end the match. A good 20-10 win to help us overcome that terrible defeat.

Afterwards was Mitra and Soma in a match that could be described as a "blowout", at least by the standards of our group. Why do I say that? 28-12 to us. Sure it's not as impressive as Eastfield Lodge's 36-12 dismantling of Diarcesia that same day or Eastfield Lodge destroying Cassadaigua 36-6 on the opening day but still the biggest margin of victory in our group. We grabbed an early lead thanks to a try from Webber, which got converted by de Vargas. However, while he would score a try of his own shortly afterwards, de Vargas was unable to convert it due to him being a bit too far to the left when he was taking it. Not just that but they'd get a try and conversion not long after that. Fortunately, we managed to get one as well (try by Brad Clement, conversion by de Vargas) to end the first half 16-6. And we extended our lead even more with yet another try and conversion, both from de Vargas. Sure, they scored one not too long after but we were a bit too far ahead for us to be worried. Especially when Saunders scored a try, masterfully converted by de Vargas, in the dying seconds to give us the aforementioned 28-12 win.

And, finally, there was The Kytler Peninsulae, a team our women's sevens team faced but I'm sure that, again, Dave has already told you what happened in that game. We had our bye day the day before, which meant that the boys could squeeze in some extra training for their make-or-break game. And, while there were moments that saw us pushed to the edge and fearing that this would be the match that would break us, we eventually got the better of them and won 18-14. It probably also helped that this match saw us finally get our spot at the top of the table. We got an early lead thanks to a try from Webber and conversion from de Vargas. Then they scored a try which, fortunately, for us, didn't get converted. However, just before the break, they scored another try that did manage to get converted to have a 10-6 lead at the break. Luckily, we managed to regain the lead not long after the second half started, thanks to another Webber try and de Vargas conversion. Unluckily, we lost it shortly afterwards when they scored their third and final try, though that too failed to get converted. After that, we had a lot of tense, nail-biting action, wondering if we'd be going out early or if we'd overcome the odds to take home a win. Which we did; just before the end of the second half, Saunders managed to get on the breakaway and bury the ball down in between the posts to give us a 16-14 lead; throw in a third and final successful conversion by de Vargas and you've got yourselves an 18-14 win and, as previously mentioned, a spot at the top of the table thanks to Mattijana losing 24-8 to Mitra and Soma.

So remember how I mentioned how there was a surprise? Where a team we thought would go through failed to make it through and one that we thought wouldn't stand a chance made it through as well? Mitra and Soma finished behind us and Mattijana finished third place. We all had the same record with three wins and one loss: Mattijana 24-12 Elejamie; Mitra and Soma 12-28 Elejamie; and Mitra and Soma 24-8 Mattijana. However, due to us losing by 12 to Mattijana but beating Mitra and Soma by 16, we finished top of the table and went through. And Mitra and Soma won by 16 but also lost by a margin of the same score, which is why they finished in second place and joined us whereas Mattijana went out. Ethane finished third with their sole win being a 24-10 win over The Kytler Peninsulae, who failed to win any of their games and, as a result, finished in last place.

So who will we be facing in the quarter-finals? Liventia. They finished second in their group with a single win, a single loss and two draws. Really. And they had tied with Vangaziland and the Main Nation Ministry (whose women's sevens team had beaten our women's sevens team earlier) but, unlike us and Mitra and Soma, made it through thanks to a better point differential; +12 to them compared to the +8 for Vangaziland and the MNM, though the former scored more points than the latter. The winner of this match will go on to face the winner of the Vekaiyu vs Kernovi and Rewgwlas match. Mitra and Soma, on the other hand, will face West Phoenicia, who topped Liventia's group. And the other quarter-final will be Eastfield Lodge taking on the USAR.

Though a good chunk of our stars are out of the running, things aren't exactly over yet. Ryan Anderson's still in the running to get a bronze medal; he just needs to beat Jon Scheele from Cassadaigua and, if he wins, Jean-Phillippe Mignard to get the medal. Rodrigo Espina Carazo beat Kriegiersien's Hobbes Goblin in a unanimous decision to make it through to the Round of 16, where he'll face Porabasta's Juan Sebastian Palacio. And the Winger brothers, Victor de Soto and Peter Milian are in the finals of the Men's Coxless Fours, so they could be in with a shot to take home either a gold, silver or bronze. Not to mention the men's sevens team have yet to play, where they'll try to either equal the bronze they won last time or get a better medal. Still, there's plenty of time left and our guys and gals should hopefully have what it takes to bring home at least one medal. Here's hoping.

Also, apologies for the lack of pictures, I was in a little bit of a rush to get this up. After all, the quarter-finals of the men's tournament will start shortly and I wasn't sure if I had enough time to get this up and posted before then. Especially since I can't seem to get the Wi-Fi to work on my phone there and taking my laptop to the stadium seems so burdensome and quite possibly distracting as well. So I'll just leave you with this whole load of text instead. I'll try and get some pictures for the next article, whatever it'll be. Either way, just be like me and sit back, relax and watch some league nines action.

Vilitan Union Player Spotlight :: Kennex Wilisii

The Report from Republica :: Vilitan Union Olympic Delegation Player Spotlight :: Kennex Wilisii, Mens Tennis

Image
Kennex Wilisii has been widely considered as one of the best Tennis players ever to come out of Vilita and Turori as a dominant force throughout the Vilitan Cove and even at times branching out into internationstatal competition. To understand Vilitan Tennis, however, is to take a non-traditional look into a sport that is both popular and unpopular for perhaps the same reasons. Unlike many major Tennis playing nations, young Vilitan and Turorian aspiring Tennis players are not separated into gender classes but trained from the outset as one core group. Male and Female players compete both with and against each other at all levels of play all the way through to the top levels including on the VCAT (Vilitan Cove Area Tennis) Rankings. While Kennex Wilisii rose to become the Top Male Tennis player in Vilita by overtaking rival Huta Corrai in the rankings at a young age, it was still some time before Wilisii was able to catch the #1 overall ranked Vilitan tennis player, Female competitor Kiko Moreto. The Trio have maintained a position atop the Vilitan Cove Area Tennis Rankings for a number of seasons without any major challenge from other competitors threating to break into the Top 3 with their closest challengers being the Muubab siblings; Turoala and Sjinkal.

Wilisii finally bypassed Kiko Moreto for the number one overall ranking approximately two seasons ago and has not given up the spot since establishing themselves as a world Tennis threat. When the Vilitan Union began qualifying its Tennis Athletes for the Olympic Games in Aeropag, it was no surprise to see the trio involved with Kennex Wilisii leading the way for the Vilitan Union Contingent. While all of the Vilitan Union competitors had their struggles during individual competition including Wilisii who was soundly beaten in the Round of 32 by Harun Akkad 6-3; 6-3; Kennex shone in the doubles competition when paired on a team with their traditional rivals on the Vilitan Circuit, female athlete Kiko Moreto in Mixed Doubles and Huta Corrai in the Mens Doubles competition. Wilisii was the common component as both Vilitan Union Doubles teams advanced to the Semi-Finals of their respective competitions. However, what was a doubly satisfying accomplishment for Kennex Wilisii and their Vilitan Union rivals turned Olympic Partners, ultimately became a double disappointment as the duo of Wilisii and Kiko Moreto; the #1 and #2 overall ranked Tennis players in the Vilitan Cove, came up short, losing their Semi-Final matchup then being defeated for the Bronze Medal by the sibling duo of Kamal and Wissam Dallas. While that was the end of the line for Moreto, Wilisii still had another shot at an Olympic Medal with Huta Corrai - but once again the duo fell agonizingly short after a Semi-Final defeat, the team went down to Milo Hewitt and Olivia Jean in the third place match sending the Vilitan Union Tennis Team home without any medals.

As Wilisii and the top Tennis players in the Vilitan Cove returned home it was clear that they had a new focus that went beyond just beating each other in local competitions. Their Olympic experience had turned the once bitterly rivalrous trio into a much more amicable relationship - particularly between Wilisii and Moreto as the duo - while still actively competing head to head on the individual circuit throughout the Vilitan Cove, would maintain their partnership and actively train as a doubles pairing with one eye clearly focused on a potential return to the Olympics and a chance to claim a first Olympic Medal.

Now the Vilitan Union's top Tennis Players have returned to the Olympic Games, arriving in the Free Republics and putting their talents up against the best in the multiverse. Returning as the top ranked player in the Vilitan Cove, Kennex Wilisii came out flying with a clean opening round 2-set victory over Hemat Darwisa of Eramun. They got a slightly harder fought match in the Round of 64 as Elejamie's Christian Lawrence pushed the second set to the breaking point after Wilisii took the opener 6-3, but the Vilitan ace ultimately prevailed 7-6 to once again advance after just 2 sets. With the rest of the Vilitan Union contingent already eliminated, Kennex Wilisii was the last hope as of the Round of 32 for Vilitan Cove Tennis. After having not lost a single set all tournament long, however, things in the Round of 32 did not start out smoothly for Willisi who lost 3-6 to Aljaz Corluka of Mattijana in the first set. The Mattijanan had all the momentum in the second set and raced out to a 5-3 lead. Willisi got the set tied up at 6 however and then came back to win 7-6 to even up the match. Having come so close to victory then watched it slip away seemed to have a demoralizing impact on Corluka and Wilisii confidently progressed to end the match with a 6-2 victory to advance to the Round of 16.

Wilisii's round of 16 matchup against Mehmet Demirel was ultimately one of the most exciting individual matches of the Olympic Tournament in Republica thus far as the two players exchanged victories in the first two sets but refused to give up the fight in the third and final set that eventually required six attempts at match point before Kennex Wilisii finally prevailed to advance to the Quarter Finals. Wilisii will face Darmeni Tennis Champion Immanuel Randell with a spot in the Semi-Finals on the line tomorrow while on the Womens side, Wilisii's Mixed Double partner Kito Moreto has also advanced to the last eight where she will take on Marla Gerard from the historically strong Womens Tennis nation of Neu Engollon - reigning Womens Individual champions through Gerard's country mate Alma Semmes.

While the performances of Kennex Wilisii and Kito Moreto in reaching the Olympic Singles Quarter Final rounds will surely inspire Tennis Faithful back in the Vilitan Cove, both now have an opportunity to do what no Vilitan Union athlete has done before - bring home a medal in Tennis Singles and inspire a new generation of Vilitan and Turorian Tennis players.

Network ENN Radio - Transcript - Men's Singles Round of 16

Ameerah Gauchi (AG) and Joan Levitt (JL), with Martin Singh (MS) courtside. Chair Umpire (U) as well.

AG: Now we have Malcolm Press looking to serve and take this into a final and decisive set. He holds a break of serve, he would do well not to lose it like he did in the first set.

JL: And that's an unfortunate double fault. There's a bit of tension here.

U: Love-fifteen.

AG: What an excellent body shot from Press, he's doing well in mixing up his serves, jamming up Jordaniscus.

U: Fifteen-all.

AG: Serve goes into the net, just a bit late there in pulling the trigger. Second serve, very good, Jordaniscisus puts it into play but it's a bit short with some pace taken off the ball, Press moves in towards the net and volleys the ball back across, Jordaniscus moves in, passing shot, and Press, seeing the open court just flicks his hand, and the ball just delicately drops across - gee, he's got some good hands.

JL: Yeah, you can see that Jordaniscus just hit the ball a bit too late, not getting enough power which caused Press to set up that volley.

U: Thirty-fifteen.

JL: Another ace, we're flying through these points, that's Press' third for the set.

AG: Some players when sensing the end of the set, they just want to take a rest as soon as possible, so you see some aces and quick winners just to get to the real decider set.

JL: Which we've just seen again, down the T, Jordaniscus gets the racquet on it, but not enough to take a hit.

U: Forty-fifteen.

AG: This time, a long rally, approach shot coming from Jordaniscus is too short, which sits up and allows Press to produce some speed on the backhand with a winner to paint the line, Joradniscus caught off-balance. Well that's the --

JL: No, Jordaniscus challenges the point, just in front of him so maybe he's right?

U: Mr. Jordaniscus is challenging the call on the left far-side line, ball was called in.

Hawk-eye is produced, and the ball is shown to be fully on the line.

AG: Nah, the umpire's decision is not overruled. He may as well have challenged, it was his last challenge and it was the last point of the set.

U: Call stands. Game and second set, Press.

JL: Some really awful challenges today, I just don't like the trend of wasting challenges when the players clearly know that it's in, but then they think, maybe it's wrong, but it's really not. Anyways.

AG: And with that game, Malcolm Press claws his way back into the match by levelling the match with one set apiece. Thoughts on his performance, Joan, Martin?

JL: It's been excellent, he's been improving his energy levels since that medical break at the end of that first set, his first serve percentage has gone up by 16%, from 54 up to 70% over the two sets, which means he's been getting more of those free points he desperately needed, not having to rely on that second server. He didn't face a single break point this set as well, which will definitely give him confidence coming into the third.

MS: Yeah that's right. I think that hip flexor problem, which we think is his problem, since he went out to the private room with the physio during the break, has resolved itself, at least for now. His movement was a bit sluggish in the first set, but it's improved, I see that he is a bit more quicker on his feet, he's move up towards the base line, trying to play with some controlled aggression. He's in the right mindset, but let's hope his hip will be better, I do see some KT tape there, which might alleviate his pain going into the third.

AG: Alright, and what about Jordaniscus? Ever since he got broken early into that second set, he's been a bit sluggish, and his forehand has just disappeared.

JL: Yeah, all of a sudden, it's like his legs have disappeared from under him. After losing that important rally and being broken by Press, it's just demoralising. He needs to regroup for the last set. I've noticed that he's just standing a little bit too far back from the service line to be making a meaningful impact on the Press serve, and not use variety in his shots, it's just been very easy for Press to use his backhand repeatedly over and over again. Perhaps throw in a few slices, just to change the pace, because it's getting too easy for Press now.

MS: Agree with what Joan's said. With a new set, he really has that time to just clear his mind and refocus and acknowledge the set back and hopefully win the third. He knows that Press has that hip injury, so maybe try and hit the ball so that Press has to move from side to side, might be his best strategy.

AG: Alright, we'll be back after some quick commercials for the third set. Stay tuned here at the Olympics in Republica.

- Ah, now this is a tad bit embarrassing. Guess who got themselves piss drunk last night? None other than the whole Gamer Gang and friends! God, we can't even remember what we were celebrating to get drunk that much, or if we were even celebrating something. Or maybe we got piss drunk to drive away the memories of a painful loss. Anyway, that means we've got a lot of ground to cover for days four and five of the Olympics, but thankfully I've got friends to deal with all of these with me! As always, feel free to jump ahead to the section with the sport that you wanna read about, and as always, if there's something that isn't here, try CNN Sports instead! Toodles!

Baseball Events: Kriegiersien vs. APOC Coalition and Darmen vs. APOC Coalition (Ibrahim)
Hello, Gamers fans. The Armored Dinner Jacket here, sharing my musings about Olympic baseball. So there's actually such a thing as Olympic baseball now, actually. Who would've thought? And it's been divvied up between men and women with the women's baseball event being declared a demonstration event (meaning medals won there don't count in the official tally), something that hasn't sit well with a number of nations that have participated in the World Baseball Classic have taken issue with. But I'm not here to talk about them. I'm here to talk about the Coalition baseball team and their exploits in the Olympics.

Where do we start though? Obviously the Coalition's first ever baseball game in the Olympics, and it turned out to be the women's team who got to play first, and they squared off against Kre... Kri... Kree... Kriegiersien! Yes, that's the one! Kriegiersien versus the APOC Coalition. Don't know what I was expecting out of this really though. All I know is that Julie He came out of international retirement for one last shot at baseball silverware, but she has a hard task ahead of her. We're talking about a Coalition team here. That means Flefts, Prids, Tazniks and Coppers all together in one team. Say what you will, but we all know that combining four nations with notorious luck in international tournaments can only be a recipe for disaster. But surprisingly, there was no disaster to be seen here, only victory for the Coalition. I suspect that while that will be a rare statement for now, as the Coalition continues entering the Olympics perhaps this phrase will be repeated more and more. As it stands, the APOC Coalition has gathered itself a 10-5 win over Kriegiersien. An early three-run homer from Kalila Mouhandiz at the bottom of the second inning set the tone for the rest of the match, with Kriegiersien barely getting any licks in while the Coalition had their merry way with them.

Very much not the same with the men's team however. It was a close contest, but Darmen eventually came up 6-5 victors against the Coalition. The men's team were simply off their game today. A blunder on Marshall Householder's part (uncharacteristic of him, I know) allowed the Darmenis to score two runs at the top of the 7th inning, just when things were beginning to look up for the Coalition. And then Peter Offutt misjudged what should have been an easy catch to allow Darmen to get what would turn out to be the game-winning score at the top of the 9th. Of course, we couldn't have known that we would score two runs at the bottom and give us all hope (false hope, but still) that we might just be able to sneak this win. But alas, it was not to be. Anyone who knows Fleftic baseball history knows that we never pull off the comeback victory. That's just impossible. Okay, you can count Abanhfleft making it all the way to the third place playoff in WBC 43 as sort of a comeback victory, but you can't really count it because we lost third place as well. So, ergo, Coalition baseball sucks, and yet at the same time it doesn't. Quite the paradox, we are.

Men's Football Game Two: APOC Coalition vs. Sanctaria (Graham)

Amazing, isn't it? We all thought that we'd escaped the era of our footballers gifting goals and own goals to the opposition, but apparently not. Or maybe it's because we're playing our first games in the Olympics as a unified team. I just think it's hilarious that out of all those shots on target that Sanctaria had against us, it would be our own players who end up scoring the goals for them. One of them even came from the man who had tormented Sanctaria's attack for the whole ninety minutes!

I mean, right from the opening kickoff, it was painfully obvious to everyone that Abanhfleft--sorry, I meant the Coalition would dominate the contest from start to finish. Peter Schermer was always getting in behind the Sanctarian back line, and it seemed only a matter of time when he would find the back of the net as opposed to if. And when turned out to be the 8th minute, when Schermer displayed his exquisite first touch with an excellent knockdown of Rory Edwards' chipped ball before turning in place and firing for the top right corner. The goalkeeper had no chance, no chance at all. Just like he had no chance when Schermer raced clear of his marker and the Sanctarian made the mistake of rushing out instead of staying on his line, where he probably would have had a better chance against Schermer's slot shot.

Then came a moment of comedy that almost gave Sanctaria a way back into the game, a moment that thankfully didn't come to pass. But it did give this gay something to worry about because I've gotten so used to my favorite teams collapsing under the slightest hint of pressure. In hindsight though, it's a moment that I could afford to laugh at because it cost us nothing in the end except maybe for the clean sheet. It was supposed to be just a simple clearance after all, but up until now I cannot tell who messed it up, if it was Tukuku or Cardew. Probably both of them, because Tukuku misjudged the strength and direction of his kick while Cardew just stood there watching as the ball flashed past him. You would expect someone like him to react much, much faster than that! Thankfully it wouldn't be much more than a footnote in this match as Dario Frigo's header from Mauro Magnanelli's free kick restored the Coalition's two-goal advantage, only for yet another own goal to hand us a frantic finish to the match. To be fair, this one was completely not Guildy Cardew's fault now. How was he to know that the ball, after hitting the post, would hit him on the crown of his head and fly into the back of the net anyway? I know I wouldn't know. Hey, that's a paradox! And didn't the Armored Dinner Jacket say something about a paradox earlier in this post?

Women's Gridiron Game Two: Alpine Union vs. APOC Coalition (Denis)
Alpine Union 3 0 3 7 13
APOC Coalition 0 3 0 7 10

Hello there, friends, comrades, and fellow fans in gridiron. Welcome to my abbreviated recap of the APOC Coalition women's gridiron team's exploits in the XIII Olympiad. A fuller version can be seen on my blog but if you're looking for just a quick read then you have come to the right place. As you can see, I am with the Gaelic Gamers right now covering the Olympics and I have been chosen to observe proceeding for women's gridiron since the vast majority of the players on the Coalition women's gridiron team are plying their trade in my home league, the Pridnestrovian Gridiron Super League. As I have said, the full recap is on my website, so let me get on with my abbreviated recap here on Gaelic Gamers.

If there is one phrase that I can use to describe the Coalition women's gridiron team, then it would be "off the pace". Almost all of them are literally fresh off of a grueling PGSL campaign, and I believe that this is literally the first time that they have all trained together, so I guess it would make sense that they are this much "off the pace". Then again, the Alpine Union also looked off the pace; only penalties on third down prevented their opening drive to stall until they finally got to within field goal range. This left the Coalition only about maybe thirty, forty seconds on the clock in the first quarter by the time they got possession of the ball; barely any time to get a drive moving at all. They didn't need penalties to get their drive moving once the second quarter kicked in though, and after a brave goal line stand on the part of the Alpines, the scores were leveled up 3-3.

And so it went, with the Alpines scoring another field goal in the third quarter after APOC's first possession in that time resulted in a three-and-out. Scoreless drives then ensued until Kelly Profit finally connected Maxine Stone on 3rd and 10 with a little more than two minutes to go in the fourth quarter for a 33-yard touchdown, and now it was on APOC to see this game through and hang on to the victory. Which, as you can see from the boxscore above, we failed to do. The Alpines managed to get to the red zone and then they punched through our own goal line stand to win the game at the death. Now, if you would like to read a more in-depth analysis of this game (or if you would like to see me berate both the Coalition and Alpine players) then do head over to my blog for said more.

I mean, why am I even bothering anymore? If a bunch of girls (or women, really, I don't even know) in Santa Claus costumes can beat this rugby sevens team (heck, beat almost every rugby sevens team in the groups) then what chance do we really have? Especially after Lauri Larusso banged up her toe and had to sit out this game, immediately knocking out one third of the Coalition's best three women's rugby players. Reyla Paracelso was a decent enough replacement for Lauri, and Bera Irurlegui had her shooting boots on for this game, but those Santa Clice though! Damn! Like I've already said earlier, if girls in Santa costumes can top an Olympic group then why bother? And that's not even bringing up rugby league nines. How does that even work? I like to think of myself as a fast learner and yet I've still not got the hang of rugby league nines. And apparently neither have the players. Copper Cuprum have always prided themselves in being the rugby league fanatics in the Coalition and hence their players form the backbone of the Coalition side, but even they have been struggling with this new format. Frankly, I don't see us lasting much longer in this particular event. Oh, well. What can you do when the group leaders wear Santa costumes?

Women's Basketball Game Two: Vakolicci Haven and Celeria vs. APOC Coalition (David)
So I'm only gonna be providing another quick recap for the basketball because we're rapidly running out of page space (and time) to get this post up. Apparently there are some troubles brewing in Vakolicci about decisions to not send out athletes from a particular group or place (I can't really remember, me). I don't know if it's had an effect on the delegation but I have to say that the Vakolicci team did not appear to be playing at their best. I mean, how else can you explain them getting trounced by the very same team that got absolutely demolished only a few days before? And I've already told you before, women's basketball is not really the most popular sport here in the Coalition or even that well funded. There's enough interest that we've managed to assemble a team fit to compete in the Olympics, but we've had a chastening opening day experience at the hands of Titaniumland, a land that now appears to be, according to my latest in-depth search of the Internet, gone. Like poof, gone! No trace remains. Only their delegates remain, and while they're all still here, one suspects that when the Olympics end, they will all turn to dust and get blown away, like a certain bunch of people in a movie I've seen somewhere.

Anyway, back to the basketball. Man, I would love to sing my praises for Miss Lynda Robichaud, that six-foot-two 25-year-old point guard. God, that was a lovely performance, wasn't it? 30 points, 12 assists, and even 3 rebounds to boot! If I didn't know any better, I would've thought that Leo Baxter had been reincarnated into the body of a woman, and that women is named Lynda Robichaud. I bet Mr. Baxter would have loved that, wouldn't he?

Men's Gridiron Game Two: Grand Theocratic Empire of Holy Marsh vs. APOC Coalition (Dara)
Holy Marsh 7 0 0 3 10
APOC Coalition 7 0 0 7 14

And now for the final part of this long and exhaustive (or exhausting, it really works both ways). Men's Olympic gridiron football. After the disappointment of last game, I can't say I was really looking forward to this one, you know what I mean? Of course, a little corner of my heart was hoping that the lads could bounce back and take the lead from the lasses and win a game in the Olympics, and lo and behold, they did! It was tough going but they actually finally did it. I guess they took their defeat against the hosts to heart and made the necessary improvements to their game. Or maybe the other nation was just a little bit shit at gridiron. Maybe, maybe not. Not taking any chances.

Watching this game has finally allowed me to understand just what exactly my friend Denis Avtushenko sees in his countryman Stan Serban. I'm sure y'all remember the days when Serban was this meme of a second-string quarterback, only good enough to take a knee and run out the clock. It didn't help that he was always getting traded to some team or another, from Ogovlich to Effelenendro to Piuui and most recently Marble Arch. Then he moved to Pridnestrovia and the PGSL and he just... exploded. He's suddenly Stan the Man now, and guys like me who laughed at the memes now found ourselves shaking our heads for ever making fun of the day. Maybe he's just found his level now. Maybe. I don't know. I'll tell you who he did find though: this tight end named Dmitri Medvedev inside the end zone with ten seconds left to go and the Coalition offense fifteen yards away from the pylons. FNLAF teams are already rumored to be in contact with the guy, but Denis here has just told me that there is no way that this Dmitri Nikitich guy is going anywhere. He's perfectly content in CSKA Tiraspol according to Denis, my source in the CSKA fan camp. I've told him that the FNLAF has ways of making heads turn, but Denis will have none of it.

And that's days Three and Four of the Olympics finally sorted! Took us a long time to get there, but by God, get there we did! All right, everyone, time to say goodbye. XOXO from Graham; goodbye from Davey; До свидания to my friends, comrades, and fellow fans in gridiron; and a ciao, peace from the Armored Dinner Jacket. Catch us all in our next posts. Ramalaan Mohiuddin, Ramalaan Mohiuddin, Ramalaan Mohiuddin....

Tatiana Kemal was dressing to fence, as she had a thousand times before. The chest protector went on first, then the jacket, then the breeches. Beside her, Wen Lingxin, her fellow female saber fencer, was doing the same. Lingxin had been eliminated in the Round of 64 by a Mattijanan fencer, but she was giving up her chance to see women's handball in order to help Tatiana prepare for her match later in the day.

"Did you see the article about you?" Lingxin said quietly.

"Which one?" Tatiana asked. "There's been a lot. I just got off the phone with my mother. She was worried about something she'd read in La Sentinelle."

"That's your newspaper, isn't it?" Lingxin said. "La Sentinelle?"

"I prefer Quotidien Socialiste, when I can get it," Tatiana replied, referring to the Socialist Party newspaper. "But La Sentinelle works for me. But what article are you talking about?"

"The West Phoenician one," Lingxin said, reaching for her satchel, an old schoolgirl's messenger bag, to fish out her smartphone. "Let me find it..."

She handed the device to Tatiana. It was an article from the West Phoenicia New Network, featuring Marchioness Linda Lebanon's response. One would expect this from the lower class, fencing is a long time fine and noble sport. It is not a sport that a lot of people are attracted too and it's not a sport that usually attracts peasants. "What kind of...never mind," Tatiana said. A member of the Socialist Party's youth branch at her university, the idea of feudalism was anathema to her.

" So Miss Kemal must have money somewhere, so it's kind of a cheek for her to label her opposition a brat when she probably has the same privilege, " Tatiana read aloud. " The only spoiled one here is Miss Kemal’s attitude. One has the ability to be a gracious winner or act like a brat. She choose the latter in her actions towards me. A West Phoenician finishing school would certainly give her some manner. "

"Well," Lingxin said. "That's quite something. Do you know what exactly a finishing school is?"

"I think it's some kind of etiquette school," Tatiana said. "She's saying I'm an unrefined peasant."

"Some nerve!" Lingxin said fiercely, the younger woman's mouth pulled tight.

Tatiana sighed. "In all honesty, I kind of deserved it," she said. "I let my temper get the better of me, and I said something I shouldn't have."

"That doesn't give them the license to say these things," Lingxin said quietly. "Keep reading."

Reports also suggest she is a Serrielan immigrant, Tatiana read. if this is true, is she a citizen of Laeral? Should she be entered if she is actually not taken the Laeral citizenship test and passed?

Tatiana pressed her mouth into a firm line, the better to stop herself from saying anything rash. "I've been a citizen since I was four years old. You...you don't tell an immigrant they don't belong in their new country."

"You need to say something," Lingxin said. "Get the press, and make her eat her words. What's she's doing, my mother would call it chī cù. Eat vinegar. She's just bitter that she lost, so she's trying to make you look bad internationally. When you let people walk over you like that, you let them think they're better than you. You shouldn't do that." There was something in her voice that Tatiana knew not to ask about. Something had happened to her.

"But athletically speaking," Tatiana said, "we haven't a leg to stand on. They're one of the best sporting programs in the 'verse. They're top five on the medal table, and we haven't got a single medal. They're a powerhouse. They've won something like a dozen global championships, while we couldn't even win a regional football championship we were hosting."

"Then you'll have to win us one today!" Lingxin said. "Show them what Laeral can do!"

Tatiana nodded, and resumed putting on her protective gear. "Let's seem how many rounds of practice we can put in before my bus arrives."

Baroness Vandersen Speaks on Vangaziland-West Phoenicia Rivalry

The spat between two empires is making waves through the Olympiad. A relatively minor cheerleader spat has spiraled into a competition that's garnered international coverage. Many believe the spirit is opposite of what the Olympics should be. This should be a time of coming together. Sportsmanship and bonding over love of sports should be the focus.

Instead we see a constant exchange of barrages between the Kingdom of West Phoenicia (or the Confederate Empire of West Phoenicia) and the Empire of Vangaziland. Words have gone back and forth from the cheer to archery delegations and beyond.

"Just when things start to calm down, things kick back up", said Baroness Jenna Vandersen. The Imperial Royal is daughter to the Jarl of Central Vangaziland. She is representing the Empire in Auto Racing Vangaziland. She enters as a winner of the WGP2's team points trophy. "I spoke with the cheerleaders about apologizing. They were thinking of sending gifts to make up for their rudeness."

Baroness Vandersen spoke of the moment one of the cheerleaders banged on her door with a reason why they didn't have to apologize. "This shorter one barged into my room and shoved her phone in my face", said the Baroness. She spoke of flyer Liz Marsden.

"You see? Look what their fencer is saying. She's talking about our Royalty", Liz said while talking excitedly. "So she's snapping at you too. Still want us to apologize? Huh? Huh?"

Jenna tried to get them to apologize anyway. The consensus among the Vannish cheerleaders is that they'll 'think about it'.

Baroness Vandersen was asked on her response to the Phoenician fencer's statement. She first spoke on the statement that fencing is not a sport for 'peasants'. "I think the Marchioness was just trying to say that Ms. Kemal of Laeral must have money herself", Jenna said. "The problem is that many Phoenicians are less eloquent or articulate than say, the average Vangazi."

Vandersen was asked how she feels about the Marchioness. "I'm glad to see more Black royalty", said the Vannish Baroness. "The thing is. She speaks of our Royal blood. The Vandersen line has been Royal since the 1500s. The Vang line of our Prince and Emperor goes back to the 1450s, and back to recorded time in the African line. I would like to know how far some of this so-called Phoenician rivalry can trace back their line."

Baroness Vandersen was asked why she thought the Marchioness made the comments she made calling the Vannish Emperor a barbarian. Jenna laughed as she said, "I think I know why. Have you ever seen Emperor Vang? She clearly has a crush on him. Phoenician royalty is clearly less attractive than Vannish. I know when a sista is shopping around."

Jenna reffered to the Black fencer in a Vannish term of endearment while teasing her. Her heritage is a mix of Black and Scandinavian Vann. "Look at Emperor Vang", said Baroness Vandersen. Do you think her husband will look this handsome when he's 64?"

Image

Baroness Vandersen spoke on earlier statements in West Phoenician media that poked fun at the Emperor's deceased wife. "You can't expect the Phoenicians to have class", said Vandersen. "This just shows how low they would stoop."

Jenna was asked how she feels about the Phoenician calling out Tatiana Kemal, a fencer from Laeral. She called reports that West Phoencians were spoiled was just 'Vannish Propaganda'.

"Tatiana should have never apologized", said Baroness Vandersen. "The Phoenicians are a delegation where their archer insulted female competitors from several other competing nations on their looks. Not just Vangaziland. Their media has poked fun at people who have died and passed onto the next realm. If they do not wish to be called spoiled, they should look at their own delegation."

She was asked how that might compare her based on the Vannish cheer squad. "The cheerleaders are certainly not showing the best example. The thing is, they just have poor sportsmanship. The Vangazi don't look down on others. That is the quality which draws Vangaziland's ire towards the Confederates. To onlookers, both nations might seem spoiled. Which nation looks down on you though? It should also be known that Vangazi are simply standing up to their aggression. We see how their royal just attempted to bully the fencer from Laeral."

Vandersen later mentioned that she still hopes the Vannish cheer squad will apologize. "Mending fences is the only way forward", said the Baroness.

Hello darlings it's me again Norma Mansfield.

Pretty Jenna Vandersen of Vangaziland is a Baroness of one of the lesser houses of Vangaziland. Let us not forget readers we have Princess Royal Arsinoe Gryphon-Bush II in Republica, she led the West Phoenician Olympic delegation like a true leader. One day she will be queen alongside her elder brother Prince Glenton Gryphon-Bush III. We also have Third Empress Cleopatra-Olympias on hand watching games and representing the royal family as well as offering sacrifices to the deities to wish us gooduck. Both outrank “Baroness” Vandersen,
She has a natural beauty but she would not last a day at a West Phoenician court, but she is always welcome to be a lady in waiting to Marchioness Linda Lebanon.
Sources within the Olympic Village had the Vannish airhead cheerleaders attempting to ruffle the Baroness feathers, to her credit the Baroness choose to respond diplomatically and not lower her standards to that of the gaudy gaggle of bubblegum chewing college cheerleaders.

She did say “The problem is that many Phoenicians are less eloquent or articulate than say, the average Vangazi." Unfortunately she doesn't realise West Phoenicians are brutally honest, they say it like it is and not one to sugarcoat situation. And if that didn't always work a West Phoenician Scorpion or Taipan in the bed of rival usually gets the point across.

She did attempt to throw shade in regards to bloodlines and royalty, honey fix your make up and hair before you do that, as a royal you should look immaculate and should never be confused with the usual Vangazi riff-raff. If you want to talk of royal bloodlines the current Emperor; Glenton Gryphon-Bush II Philopator Philometar has the blood of kings and queen in his veins. Through his father he is next in line for the Kingdom of Gryphon. Through his mother he can trace his roots back to King Pious Imperium I 1130-1145 who were cousins before the Bush line claimed the throne.. Through perfectly selected sibling marriage, if you wanna debate pure bloods, than the Emperor claims that title. A diagram below shows the perfect royal bloodline of West Phoenicia.

When one has the blood of God's, Kings and Queens running through their veins it is not their fault if the look upon some nations as inferior. It's just the truth. Should Amelia Defence have lied? Amelia is loved by many for her outlandish behaviour, it's what the crowds pay to see. In tennis, it is not tennis if Renee Richardson is not throwing her racquet and cussing out an umpire. West Phoenicia is a nation that loves drama, opulence and the good things in life, many are filthy rich and it's a human right to be spoilt. If it wasn't for her family influence would the Baroness have even had a career in auto racing? Or would that career have ended in the curb, just like it will when she takes on West Phoenicians motor racer Vanessa Adelaide.

The Baroness talks of classy but it was her own girls in the cheer squad who were unclassy and crude, they brought it but choked. Their presence was even had luck for the Vannish male skateboarders and rumour has it, other teams don't want them around. They are a jinx.

The Baroness is always welcome to rub shoulders with Empress Cleopatra-Olympias and Princess Arsinoe Gryphon-Bush II if she wants to know how royalty really should be, and not some empire that will fall apart when Emperor Vang passes.

We do wish her well in her racing events and wish her a happy 3rd spot.

West Phoenician diver Leah Wicks is back after qualifying for the West Phoenician Diving team. Leah Wicks has said she is so proud to represent West Phoenicia is her second Olympic Games appearance. And is determined to bring home more medals to add to her tally.

Leah is one part of the famous Wick sisters, her sister Sarah scooped up to two bronze meals at the Novonaya, Kelssek and Provinsk Summer Olympic Games than retiring to focus on becoming a diving coach for the Olympic team. However of the two Leah has been a crowd favourite with her pixie-like appearance and pleasant manners, and her ability to smile when facing defeat.

Leah first hit the headlines during the U.S Summer Games where she pulled in a gold in the 3m Springboard Diving as well as a gold in the 3m Springboard Synchro with her sister.
At the age of only 17 she was thrust into the sports spotlight for her achievement and automatically won a spot on the Olympic Diving team alongside her sister.
Leah went on to attend the Novonaya, Kelssek and Provinsk
Summer Olympics Games; with more competition and Gowers watching, she was unable to perform as high as her previous appearance at the U.S Summer Games. She had points deducted after making too much of a splash during her first dive, but she was able to recover After performing a flawless Forward 2½ Somersaults with 2 Twists. The dive pushed her into bronze position in the 3 m Springboard.

She also secured another bronze with her sister in the Synchronized 3 m Springboard.

For these games she has qualified for the 10m platform and the Synchronized 3 m Springboard where she will be partners with Sandy Chang. Under the coaching of her sister the diving team has improved their techniques and increased their degree of difficulty to maximise their points. With the increased degree Leah Wick has her fingers crossed that she can pull in a gold or silver.

Leah Wicks hails from Delta Rhodes, a province in the city-state of Titania in the Confederate Empire of West Phoenicia. A city-state famous for its pottery and cinnamon export.
After these Olympics Leah has said she feels the urge to travel wanting to travel to nations like Ko-oren, Vangaziland and Liventia. As well as take time out to photograph course and focus on a fashion line of one piece bathing suits.

Also returning to these games is diving veteran Jacob Navy. He too automatically qualified for the diving team heading to the Olympics after placing 7th overall in the Diving-Men’s 3 m Springboard at the previous games. While yet to win a medal at the Olympic Games he did have a brilliant result winning gold at the US summer games in the 3m Springboard Synchronized.
Jacob has been plagued with a shoulder injury earlier this year but he has been given the all clear to dive for West Phoenicia.
There are rumours he plans to retire, which Jacob confirmed will only happen once he pulls in an Olympic medal.
Outside of the diving world Jacob has caused some minor scandal by appearing in a women's adult magazine, fully nude twirling his Speedos in his left hand. While he was reprimanded by the West Phoenician Diving Federation it has increased his female fan base.

Jenna Vandersen and Jess Franssen arrived back in their room after watching a swimming event. Lara Luckerbjorn had swam in semifinal heat 2. Vannish fans in the stands were looking forward to her run. She came into this round as one of the top 3 swimmers. Lara put up a strong effort from launch into her last push. The Vangazi put up the fastest time of the day by .05 seconds. Madison Cohen of Cassadaigua had the second fastest time after winning the first heat of the day.

It didn't even take 5 minutes until there was banging on the door of the two race car drivers. They looked at each other, unsure of who it could be. When Jenna opened the door, she looked down at Liz Marsden. "Oh!" The cheerleader called out as soon as she saw Jenna. "Wait until you read the hog's breath that was just written about you."

Norma Mansfield just made a crucial mistake. This article was likely to accomplish much, but it would have one impact. She was about to unite the cheerleaders with their biggest domestic rival. Vandersen and Franssen had been sparring with the cheerleaders since the bus ride before the flight to Republica. The Baroness was in the process of mentoring the cheerleaders into changing their ways. Even the cheerleaders were seriously considering giving gifts to the Phoenicians. They were going to gift the Phoenicians with a limited edition run of white and gold bows with the Olympiad star logo inlaid to one ribbon.

Now Jenna Vandersen would read the latest from a woman Vannish media previously dubbed a 'propaganda shrill'. Jenna glanced through the list of various Phoenician lines. Jenna scoffed. "Yeah. That's what I said. The House of Vang goes back to 1450. The Bush line goes back to 1616."

"But they show other houses", said Liz.

"Yeah", said Jenna. "Nobody ever said there weren't Vannish Royal Houses going back farther. The Scandinavian Royal lines go back to the Viking Era. Antiquities Empire of Gazi stretched from Morocco across North North Africa back in the time of the pyramids. The House of Vang has ties to both. That list means nothing. I was talking about the name Vang." Jenna laughed as she read the list, literally having a chuckle at West Phoenicia's diverse history.

"Besides", Jenna continued. "I was refering all that new money like Lady Defence. Okay. Their Emperor has a line. But he has three wives. That doesn't produce a line. Do you know how high the mark is for a Vannish Royal to marry? Prince Vang is currently dating the Chancellor of an independant nation." Jenna giggled. "And she's head over heels. Can you imagine that happening with a Phoenician?"

Liz couldn't help but laugh. "Doubtful", said the cheerleader. She could feel a bond starting to develop between her and the drivers. The truth was that she was a fan of both drivers. Mansfield may have taken a jab at Auto Racing Vangaziland finishing with a demonstration bronze. There were 4 titles between the two drivers, not to mention 4 titles Franssen coached a team to. Vangaziland's racing program was proven. Every racing fan knew the Olympiad's result wouldn't prove who the world's best drivers were.

The Olympiad's auto racing event was taking place on an oval track. The WGPO has refused to allow such tracks in the WGPC or WGP2 because certain teams have protested. Vannish Motors Racing is not one of those teams. The track will allow tactics mixed between stock car and open-wheel racing. Racing purists will know one track, which doesn't fit the mold of the world's top leagues, will not determine the best in the multiverse. The Olympiad event is a single race in a year-long tour of motorsport excellence.

With so many talented drivers entering the Auto Racing event, a third place finish would be a welcome accomplishment. Anybody with even the slightest bit of racing knowledge understands that a thrid place finish is refered to as a podium. It's seen as an honor. To earn such a result on the Olympic level would only add to the prestige of the most decorated team in international motorsports.

"But this Mansfield gets so dark", Jenna said. "She's coming after my looks? Ha! She dares talk about my hair? She looks like she just had a bad night of.... Nevermind." Jenna paused, causing Liz to laugh.

"She called our cheer team a coven", said Liz. "But she's the one who's the witch".

"How can she call anybody a witch when she's wearing that yellow witch's robe?" Jenna didn't realize she just said the same thing the cheerleaders did when they first read the comments. This caused Liz to explode in laughter.

"That's what we said", Liz replied with tears in her eyes.

"Aren't you glad you have Vannish Royalty and not those new money divas?" Jenna scoffed. Jenna was proud that she didn't fall into a sport like fencing. Jenna's run was exciting. She worked with loud machines and entertained stadiums full of crowds. She toured the world while making headlines in her nation's sports news. Any fencing or water polo career would be hard pressed to match the impact (and pure fun) of Jenna's run.

Jess was still on the other side of the room. She didn't want to get too close to the cheerleaders. She was nervous that Jenna was getting along well with one of them.

"She actually said their royalty outranks you. Ha!" Liz paused after speaking. "Royalty doesn't line up between nations because different countries don't have the same titles. There's no Marchioness in Vangaziland." Another weak Phoenician attempt at shade fell flat.

Jenna giggled. "Besides. I am being considered for the title of the First Duchess of Esportivan Vangaziland."

Liz smirked. "The Esportivans could use some royalty", she said.

"Say", Jenna started. "How many of your teammates are around?" Jenna asked as Liz replied with 6. "Gather them up", said Jenna. "Let's go to a fancy restaurant in town. We have to talk about how we're going to handle this whole situation."

"Great!" Liz was so excited that she shouted. She backed away towards the door. "I'll tell everybody to get ready." She turned and rushed out of the room.

Once Jess was alone with Jenna, Jess asked, "Seriously? You're cool with them now?"

"Yes", said Jenna. "You have to come too. Come on."

Jess groaned as she mentally accepted the fact that she was going. She didn't like where this was headed.

A Gregoryan affair - Part II

A volleyball court. The Kriegiersien team is training. But four man are standing apart.

“You did what?”
“Quieter”, says the scarred man to the white haired.
“I just asked the first athletes from Cassadigua and Abanhfleft I met in the Olympic Village what they think of Gregory….”
“You are quiet a Village Idiot, Frank. Wait? What Olympic Village are you talking about?”
“Uhm, I mean, the athletes that are in the same hotels or surroundings as we are. However, one started to talk about Santaclausisgodistan and you won’t guess what I learned. It is a fascinating nation and I think we should talk with some of them. I believe they live in the spirit auf Greg...”
“Frank, you don’t stop to amaze me. If we would be home I would flay you and choke you with your entrails.”

“If someone is flaying here it is me!”

The Coach of the team is suddenly standing behind them. Also a hardened war veteran and major in the army.

“If you ladies would like to participate In the training, I would be aroused and delighted. You four old poofs can start with 10 laps around the field and one push-up for all of your balls at the end of every round. GO!”

They start to run. Frank begins to ponder.

“I like our coach. He reminds me of my former warden. Wonder where he is. I think dead.”
“That is why they didn’t let you out to play for … our once glorious nation. Only some moments outside and you begin to fraternise with every pathetic being. If he would be so keen, he wouldn’t stay in Kriegiersien.”
“But we are living in Kriegiersien, too.”
“For now, because we have no better choice. But we will return and get back what is ours again in time.”
“But maybe he would come with us and help if he just knew? Maybe he is a believer deep inside him, but nobody has shown him the way.”
“Bullshit.”

They are passing the Coach again.

“Still able to talk. Maybe you should run a bit faster, faggots. Push-ups!”

While the others are going down, Frank salutes to their horror to the coach and speaks.

“Sir, I like to ask a question, Sir.”
“No, you are not allowed to take a piss yet, fatty.”
“I was asking myself if you would like to be part of the most glorious nation on earth. If you are a believer.”
“Of course I am a believer. And I believe we will win this tournament and that you won’t sleep well tonight if you are shitting me.”
“Then we would be happy if you would join us on our way back to god.”
“That is a great idea, soldier and first you could be so kind to join me in conquering gold by continuing on training. If that would please your sorry ass for a start.”
“Ah, a quest. And after that you would help to reconquer..”

Frank is suddenly hit so hard by a ball at the head that he falls over and hits the ground face first.

“Sorry, I was training service”, excuses Fritz the accident.
“Did I say something from stopping push-ups and running? You two maggots bring this idiot to the doctor. And you...whitehair, you can go on training to serve with that hammer. We could use that in the next game.”

The Hall of Governance, once a palace for the monarchs in the capital of Eldura, had undergone several changes over the course of several decades, but the woodwork and marble edifices remained rather similar throughout. Dust from the monarchs of the past, to the coup lead by Max Venavle, followed by the assassination of the dictator and the rise of Selvala McEva (and her trademark flowing robes of white), to another coup lead by a relatively unknown kral commodore of Vekaiyu, collected on the hard-to-reach crown molding, banisters, and occasional furniture undersides, dressing the long hallways with the echoes of the past. In any given hallway, meeting breaks from war room dealings mixed with choice of uniform styles and other trivial concepts such as what food would be served on Tuesday, what sort of islovium should be poured, and so on. Military minds crossed paths with ministers, and clergymen and women of the ever-pervasive church could be seen mingling with seasoned politicians.

It was uncommon, but not rare, for a member of the Vekaiyun Olympic Committee to walk these halls.

Riyna Yovisktre walked closely next to the Premier of Vekaiyu, Ikrisia Levinile. The chairwoman wore her recognizable pinstripe suit with skirt that fell to the knee - a standard affair, as she was always concerned with looks - and finished it off with her rimless glasses. The premier, on the other hand, opted to wear her typical uniform of a black blazer and skirt combination. After all, today was like any other day for the premier.

"I'm impressed with the performance of the athletes," she began as the two walked down one of the hallways, moving from a tiled floor to that of red carpet as they entered an older wing. "Provinsk continues to recover from the deluge of fans from around the 'verse during those last games, and while one can expect a bit of an adjustment with our delegation traveling abroad, it's not like you send out the same delegation out time and time again. It's an influx, and that influx keeps us fresh, I think."

As the Premier continued to casually discuss the Olympics and seemed reasonably receptive to some of her suggestions to switch up the council, Riyna was anything but casual, and today was certainly not like any other day for the chairwoman. After all, she had just finished checking the news on her holographic screen and realized the unthinkable had just occurred: a Vekaiyun underwater hockey team had lost an international match. The first of its kind, to some no-name nation she'd only remember seeing through the parade of nations as far as she was concerned. Main Nation Ministry? The entire name sounded like strained lentil soup, light on salt and with no salt to cut the pasty texture.

The premier smiled. "Do you suppose we'll finish in the top-ten this year? I have to admit, I was surprised, not disappointed, but surprised that we managed a fifth place showing during the last games. What's our high? Third? That's very impressive for what is deemed a fairly one-dimensional delegation such as ourselves."

Riyna continued to play through the scenarios in her mind. This Main Nation Ministry didn't even field an underwater hockey team in the last Olympiad! They weren't even in the last Olympiad! How dare they... well... that is to say... how dare they even compete! How... how could they even decide to... no, wait. She shouldn't be mad at them. They're there to compete. She should instead be upset with the Vekaiyun squad! How dare they lose to a nation that had never competed in the sport on an international level! How could they? It was like some kind of movie she saw where a band of cut-ups from a particular nation played ice hockey against the best nation in the world and didn't make themselves out to be fools! They even won! Was there no justice in the world?

"But at the end of the day, Riyna, you know this, sports are sports. They are there to entertain. And, as long as we're entertaining, well, that makes up for any medal count, because where's the fun in the numbers if you don't experience it with the athletes, our fellow countrymen?"

The athletes, they had to too easy. They weren't superstars! They were just a group of, exactly, countrymen! The first thing she'd have to do was cut the supply of Eskola, in haste! She should've known that a soda pop company sponsoring the team would make them all complacent and lazy! And the uniforms? They didn't need the finest of uniforms - they should be training! No television in their dorms! No makeshift Vekaiyun bars popping up in the village! This was all ridiculous!

"Riyna?" the premier asked, a soft smile on her face, though the smile was noticeably diistant. "Say, how did our underwater hockey team do today?"

"Ack!" she gasped as she could almost feel her fur stand up (even though southern variant vulpines, with their oily coats, couldn't really do that). "Men's underwater hockey... the Vekaiyun team played well, but were stymied by a solid defensive effort by Main Nation Ministry as... the team... well... goals were scored by Salvatoro Struyise in the first half, followed by a solid effort by the mid Stapen Ruyesi, and ending with a well-positioned goal by the backup forward Seri Kalaseru as the puck rang true into the gutter! But, well, that is to say, we... um... see the coaches should have not adopted a conservative approach! Main Nation Ministry is a novice, and the games against West Phoenicia and Cassadaigua will likely prove to be more difficult contests and-"

"Riyna?" Ikrisia moved the visibly-shaken chairwoman to an alcove. "We lost?"

She swallowed hard. "Yes, honorable Premier Levinile. The team lost."

The premier grimaced slightly as she leaned against the wall. "Oh. I'm disappointed."

Riyna ran her fingers along the wooden molding for some kind of comfort. Here came the hurricane, so to speak, but the secret was out. "I know, kivia Levinile, and I must apologize for our poor performance. I will ensure we learn from this mistake. I can fly into Free Republics as soon as our conversation is over!"

"No, Riyna." Ikrisia sighed. "I'm disappointed in you. Vekaiyu will lose matches here and there - we aren't infallible, and I would hope you realize that my expectations aren't perfection. We're an underwater hockey nation, yes. I played it. You played it. But we're not going to win everything."

The ears of Riyna Yovisktre sank. "But, well, how could we lose? The people will surely be disappointed! They'll demand the coach be fired! They'll over analyze and agonize over this!"

Ikrisia smirked after a simple shrug. She then shook her head. "They'll get over it. You weren't listening to me, were you? This isn't the time of Selvala McEva. This isn't meant to be a showcase of vulpine dominance - sports are a poor metric for such things. This is meant to entertain. Whether our nation wins or loses, we don't quite have a lot of control over that. We can't put on the uniforms and swim for them. But we can control how we act over it."

"How do you mean?"

"Focus less on the end of the game score, and more on the triumphs therein. If we win, the struggle will be all the more worthwhile. If we lose, then we lose, and people will move onto the next contest. But I believe the reason why Vekaiyuns care so much about medals is because the athletes are clearly pressured into caring about winning medals. Is that right? Well... possibly. But it does make competition rather black-and-white, doesn't it?"

"Yes, but they lost. Vekaiyu doesn't lose in underwater hockey."

Ikrisia laughed as she moved an outstretched hand toward the hallway. "Vekaiyu does lose in underwater hockey. They just did. And if the athletes are worth their salt, well, they'll fight harder. After all, it's funner to fight back to the top than to win all the time, right?"

Riyna sighed, realizing the talk with the premier went a little better than expected. "I suppose so. We'll have to see what they do, of course."
"Your uniform doesn't seem to fit. You're much too alive in it."

Be all that you can be, even if you lose,
Xander Summers thought to himself. His throat was dry and was begging for a drink. Sweat zig sagged down his forehead, the salty sting tormenting his eyes.
He had been competitive walking for the last 7 years, but each race always caused a level of anxiety inside of him.A desire to win and not mess up.
His first international race had been been a disaster. He had been disqualified at the Summer Olympics in Kelssek.
His return at Republica was going to be different, he would not stuff up in the 20km walk again.

For the last year he had been training side by side with his team mate Samson Phillistia, in preparing for these games. He was a great mate and friend. Jarred Recruit was the third member of the team to qualify, out of the three he was the one most West Phoenicians would bet on to win. He had been awarded bronze at the NS Athletics Championships in Krytenia in the 50km walk and had placed 8th in the previous games. Jarred choose to work with his own training team and spent little time with the rest of the team.
When Proud a LGBTIQ magazine in West Phoenicia ran an article on him as one of the top 10 out and proud athletes of the LGBTIQ community, Jarrad distanced himself even more whilst at times making the odd snide homophobic comment..
At the end of the day he didn't like putting a label on himself, he was just Xander Summers.

For the first 5km his mind wandered to the waving crowds, he had the urge to waive back but knew that would be a stupid move. He had planted himself with the middle of the crowd and little by little he passed another walker. Taking in the landscape of Republica.
As each KM passed the anxiety in him grew. He was terrified of messing up again, so he ran off the main rules in his head to calm himself down.

The first dictates that the athlete's back toe cannot leave the ground until the heel of the front foot has touched. Violation of this rule is known as loss of contact. The second rule requires that the supporting leg must straighten from the point of contact with the ground and remain straightened until the body passes directly over it.

He moved his mind back into reality upon realising the end goal was near. He almost felt giddy, he was in a prime position.
Todd Wilson from Anollasia was out in front and starting to make his move. Xander kept up the pace, his singlet dripping with sweat. Out of the corner of his eye was Wayne Nolan from Electrum and the previous winner. Could he really do it, could he beat a champion?
The rays of the sun lashed at his shoulders like a whip.
Also to his surprise he could not see Jarrad Recruit. Xander slugged forward, his breathing growing deeper, a slight wheeze as he pushed himself, pushed himself passed his thirst, and the muscles in his legs demanding a reprieve. But he had to stride fourth as the finishing line grew closer and closer...
