The Pokémon League: Sign-Ups and OOC Discussion

Sign-Ups and OOC Discussion
Pokémon Encounters
NPC Battle Challenges

For some reason this has been put in Portal to the Multiverse by Moderators, despite being competed between nations and about traveling around NationStates to catch and battle Pokémon. I have asked the mods to reconsider this. It's also been deemed that, unlike other sports, this one isn't allowed a sign-up thread or Team Information Threads. I'm not sure what makes this sport eligible for special restrictions but please bear with me while I re-organise these threads to fit into one.

Welcome to the Pokémon League. You have been selected by your nation to represent her in the NationStates Pokémon League. My name is Professor Oak and I will start you on your journey to the Pokémon League. The road is long and hard, you must travel the worlds of NationStates, battling elite Gym Leaders. Along the way you will catch Pokémon to train and add to your Battle Party and encounter unique events to help you fill out your Pokédex.

Trainers, A world of discovery awaits. Choose your Pokémon and become the very best, like no-one ever was.

Sign-Ups

Greetings! I am Professor Oak.

So... You decided to show up after all. You're a little late.

Which Pokémon will you choose? Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle?

To Sign-Up, post this form in a reply to this thread.

Code: Select all
Trainer Name:
Chosen Pokémon:
Trainer Bio:

Pokémon Gyms and League Qualification
Gyms will start to open soon. You need to defeat the Leaders of eight gyms in order to earn your place in the Pokémon League. If at first you fail to defeat the Gym Leader, you can try again. Once Gyms open, the news will be posted in this thread, so keep an eye out.

Catching Pokémon
Every day Trainers will be able to encounter a different Pokémon. Each Trainer has six Pokéballs to try to catch the Pokémon. The caught Pokémon will be given stats at random. If the Trainer has Pokéballs remaining after catching a Pokémon, they can try the encounter again to catch a second Pokémon.

There will also be special events to encounter greater numbers of Pokémon as well as rare, legendary and exclusive Pokémon species.

Training Pokémon
Only highly trained Pokémon will deliver at the Pokémon League. Trainers train up their Pokémon by battling. As well as the Gym Leaders, Trainers can challenge each other to battles and will encounter special Battles along their journey.

Every time a Pokémon beats another, it earns experience equal to it's opponent's Combat Power.

Evolving Pokémon
In order to possess the strongest Pokémon as well as to fill out their Pokédex, Trainers will need to evolve their Pokémon. Some Pokémon will evolve as they reach high levels, but others will only evolve using special items or making random encounters.

Starter Pokémon
Every new Trainer will receive a starter Pokémon from Professor Oak and can choose between three cute Pokémon that are great for beginners. Choose wisely, Trainers. Your choice is final!

Please use this thread to discuss the Pokémon League and ask any questions you have.

Current Sign-Ups
Beepee, represented by Ralph with Bulbasaur.
Krogon, represented by Supreme Bakken with Charmander
Lemmingtopias, represented by Lefteris with Pikachu.

How does this work? Do I sign up as a character, or can I leave the specific character unspecified?

When I try to catch a pokemon, what do I need to post in the encounters thread, and how do I know if the catch is successful?

I'm definitely interested, but I'm not too sure how it all works just yet.

Cool idea and judging from what I've seen, you share similar interests with some people on NS Sports; however, my main question is how you plan to score this game? How do you plan to determine the Gym locations, leaders and championships, etc.; is it a tour like say Grand Prix or a season? Singular RP-control players or teams? How will you evolve and train these Pokémon? Those are just a few of many more, definetly a good idea just need to better grasp what you're trying to develop.

Hello. Thanks for your questions.

I've updated the Sign-Up Thread to include character bio's if people want to include them, and to make it a bit clearer about how to sign-up.

In the encounters thread, you can really post anything that makes it clear you want to start the encounter, but I will edit it to be clearer. At the end of each day, I will update everyone's encounters about whether the catch was successful and, assuming they catch the Pokémon, an appraisal on how good the Pokémon is and it's Combat Power.

Has that answered your questions?

Hi. Thanks for your post.

To score battles, each Pokémon will have hidden stats (defence, attack, speed, health) assigned at random when they are caught.

Roughly speaking, the damage a Pokémon delivers in an attack will be (attack * Pokémon level * RP Bonus * random modifier) minus the defending stats (defence * Pokémon level * RP Bonus * random modifier). The damage will be subtracted from the Pokémon's HP (health * level). Once a Pokémon's HP is depleted, the opposing Pokémon wins. The speed stat determines which Pokémon attacks first. There will be a spreadsheet scorinator (once I've finished it) and I will make this available for people to peruse.

Gym Locations - I'm still working on this. I'd like them to be around NationStates, so trainers "travel" to the gym and visit region's they might not of been to before. If anyone is interested in their region hosting a gym, they can get in touch. The gym leaders will just be NPC's, with the same characters as in the Pokémon games (I'm going for the new Pokémon Let's Go for charachters).

So in terms of the gyms, this will be a tour. Once the actual League starts, it will be a championship held on the NationStates forum. Winners of each match progress to the next round.

It will be single controllable players, no teams.

As for training and evolving - I want to keep a little mystery about evolutions for now, but most Pokémon will evolve when they reach a certain level (usually the same level they would in the Let's Go game). A few Pokémon will need special items or events which will be introduced at a later date. In order to train a Pokémon (increase it's level) - this will be done through experience points. Every time a player catches a Pokémon or beats a Pokémon in battle, their Pokémon get experience points equal to the CP of the opposing Pokémon. As they amass xp, they will level up - becoming stronger.

Have I answered all your questions? I will update the thread to give more info in line with what I have posted in this message.

The Pokéball is empty?!

"In fact, all the Pokémon are gone." Professor Oak informs you "Already taken by Trainers who were not late. The early bird get's the worm, or in this case, the Pokémon. I do have one other Pokémon, but I have to warn you there is a problem with this Pokémon...."

You get Pikachu!

Trainer Name: Ralph
Chosen Pokémon: Bulbasaur
Trainer Bio:

Left orphaned, Ralph found himself falling into a gang of ruffians at an early age.

Whilst living rough on park benches, Ralph took to a life of petty crime. One day whilst breaking into a house and raiding the refrigerator for food, Ralph was startled by an old man. The old man, with no children of his own, took pity on Ralph, provided him with clean clothes, a soft bed and warm food. Ralph was eventually adopted by the kindly, yet timid, old man.

Ralph has now reached the age where boys and girls can get their official Pokemon licence and has decided to try to become a world famous Pokemon trainer.

Number one: you don't need multiple distinct threads for content that will all reasonably fit in a single OOC thread, and has no other qualitative purpose that would inhibit the inclusion thereof. That's spam. All of your threads have been merged into either this thread, or your IC thread.

Secondly: this fits more in P2TM than NS Sports, and as such, has been moved.

Could I ask what the difference between a Pokémon League and a Quidditch League is that makes Quidditch an NS Sport but Pokémon not? This is a League that tours different NS regions to battle, it really seems to be more of an NS sport than many that have been allowed to remain in NS Sports.

And lots of Sports have sign-up threads and Team Information threads. Why are they allowed them but not this?

The Quidditch World Cup is competed between the specific nations involved. This is not a competition between NS nations. Therefore, not NS Sports. This is where it belongs.

Color me interested.

I think it was moved to PttM because from what I see, this works like the Pokemon World Tournament where the competitors control game avatars and the RPing is done in-Pokemon-universe.

It may work in NS Sports if the league is something more like the VGC tournaments, with competing nations sending RL representatives that have set competitive teams. The resulting RP threads would be more like the players doing some random banter before the match and narrating thought processes and the decisions made during the battle as they control the 3DS (assuming that they all play USUM linked battles)
