Southern Union Rugby Championship
ABOUT SURC
The Southern Union Rugby Championship is an annual professional men's rugby union football competition in the Southern Union with teams located in Ianoia, Koana Islands and Günsovölk. Each country has six teams in their own division within the Championship. The schedule for each team consists of home and away legs between teams within their own division (10 games), as well as either a home or an away match against the 12 teams from the other two countries (12 games) for a 22-game schedule. At the end of the regular season, the top team from each division and three best remaining teams participate in the play-offs to decide the winner.
Each team can only sign youth players from their own region, and that player tied to the club throughout their career. However, once a player becomes eligible through the team releasing the player to free agency, they are free to sign for any team within the Championship.
The competition was officially founded in 1995, but began play in 1996 following negotiations between the three nations to create a unified continental tournament after failing crowds and poor finances amongst domestic competitions prompted the calls for a fresh start. Rugby union had just made large strides in professionalism around the world. New competitions, such as the Super 12 in the southern hemisphere, and the Heineken Cup in the northern hemisphere, had started up. It was no different in the Southern Union, where a group of team owners and businessmen wanted an improved product that was fast losing fans to baseball and football.
Despite much debate, an initial league of 18 teams - six in each country - was officially finalised and the opening fixtures were scheduled for March 1996.
RULES
The Championship follows all normal conventional rules of Rugby Union around the world with one exception; the Fly-Half position must be goal-kicker.
- Winning a game will earn a team 4 competition points, and a tie 2 points for each team.
- If a team scores four or more tries in a game, they will get an extra point in the standings.
- If a losing team loses by seven points or fewer, they will get a bonus point. So, for example, a losing team can get 0, 1, or 2 points in the standings for a game, while a winning team can get 4 or 5 points.
PLAYOFFS
Each division winner at the end of the season will be seeded #1, #2 and #3 in the play-offs, based on points accumulated during the season. In the event of a tie, teams will be ranked based on Point Difference, Points For and finally Tries scored.
The next three best teams in the competition - regardless of which division they are in - are then ranked 4th through 6th, using the same tiebreakers as above.
Elimination Round
Game 1: #3 seed vs #6 seed
Game 2: #4 seed v #5 seed
Semi-Finals
Game 3: #1 seed vs lowest ranked winner in the Elimination Round
Game 4: #2 seed vs highest ranked winner in the Elimination Round
