Three Things
It's literally just three things this time
Salwan Mynhier

Three Things sorts itself out rather nicely for this edition. There are two matches to discuss, and another selection of possible transfer targets to review.

A Warm-Up Loss
Before arriving in the Equestrain States, the Black-and-Reds played a warm-up friendly against the Condottieri from the Confederation of Freeport. This move was both a refresher match for the players, who had not played since the 3-1 defeat to Qasden that concluded our qualifying campaign, as well as an introduction to the sort of non-human culture that our team and fans will shortly be immersed in. "As soon as the draw was announced and we knew that we would be playing in the Equestrian States," said manager Lopal Daror, "I knew that I wanted to schedule a friendly against a team including some non-humans. In retrospect it might actually have been better practice to visit Freeport, but either way, I think it was a good experience for our players and fans to have had." While the Emerald Coast Colosseum is certainly not the newest or largest stadium in the country, Vassilian's coastal beauty and the stadium's classic looks made this an excellent choice of venue. Freeporter fans and players alike had a chance to enjoy the stately lines of the Colosseum's art deco facade, as well as Vassilian's fabulous beaches.

The match itself was a closely fought tactical battle between the Freeporter midfield overload and Squornshelan defensive shell. Manager Mad Dash elected to go with only three at the back, playing Temptation and Thorn Bristle in more holding roles, but throwing five players forward. Between the intensity of the Freeporter attack and the unfamiliarity of facing a starting lineup completely devoid of human players, the Black-and-Reds were on the back foot for much of the early going. For a while, it certainly looked like the visitors were going to have their way, and force the home side to attempt to keep pace with their scoring prowess. After several decent chances went wanting early on, it was one of the team's youngsters, 18-year-old attacking midfielder Meadow Evergreen who broke through. The unicorn found herself isolated against Tervi Oleb after receiving a quick pass forward from Thorn Bristle, and made a quick turn to allow herself space for a shot before the Confederate Vice Captain could close her down.

With the visitors now on the board after just 21 minutes, the visiting fans were jubilant, and one couldn't be blamed for expecting a high-scoring match to follow, but Oleb and Munib rallied their troops at the back and suddenly it seemed that there were black and red shirts everywhere. Despite the fact that a few of the attackers quite literally had wings, there seemed to be no way through to follow up on the early goal. Instead, it was now the home side who began to go on the attack, moving quickly to capitalize on turnovers and counter against the understrength defense, and Kukiri was tested for the first time, most notably by a wickedly curling 34th minute shot from Vladcik which she deflected just wide with a diving save. While the physicality of the Freeporter defense might have been off-putting for some teams, it was nothing new for the Confederates. Indeed, players like Bloodblade and Alastair would find themselves right at home anchoring the back four of most any SCFA side. While chances were created, the two teams entered the dressing room for the half with the score still at 0-1 to the visitors.

Both managers elected to make changes at halftime, with Daror bringing the volatile Zemen Ystrad on for Oleb, and with Mad Dash bringing on midfielder Eindride Cleary for Guinevere, leaving him with only two genuine defenders left. The Black-and-Reds were unable to take much advantage of that state of affairs, however, as they had very little of the ball during the early stages of the second half. Hoping to spark some offense, Daror made a pair of changes after 58 minutes, bringing on Geladi for Dzarkhin, and Tambura for Zonde. When this seemed to be working, Mad Dash responded in the 64th by front-loading his lineup even more, subbing off holding midfielder Temptation for attacker Emerald Eyes, and resting star winger Puzzle Piece while giving Dawn Walker an opportunity. Both managers made a further two changes with about twenty minutes to play, and the end result seemed that both teams were a bit disjointed. Passes were misplaced, free kicks were given away on awkward challenges, and things generally did not go smoothly in the attack as the match ground toward the finish. Ordinarily it would have been a state of affairs perfectly to the liking of a Lopal Daror side, but without a goal on the board after over 70 minutes of play, his team was looking increasingly unlikely to get one. Jzvanic and Vladcik both had multiple instances where they were open to receive a ball forward that would have broken open a window for nearly a sure scoring chance, but the defense could not find a way to effectively play the ball to them through the maze of blue and white shirts in midfield. While hardly an entertaining match for any neutrals in attendance, or for the Confederate faithful for that matter, it serves as an important learning experience for the team, and should serve them in good stead as they journey to the Equestrian States.

Stealing a Point
After their defeat at home, the Black-and-Reds traveled to the Equestrian metropolis of Manehattan for their opening match against Group C top seeds Acronius. The 49th ranked team in the world appeared in their tricolored away jersey, while the Black-and-Reds wore, well, black and red, donning their home jerseys. Acronius have yet to officially announce their roster for the Cup of Harmony, but working with their roster from qualifying is at least a good start. Speaking of good starts, this time it was the Black-and-Reds who scored early. Vladcik was able to find Jzvanic with a low centering pass from along the goal line, just inside the box that the forward slotted home into the bottom corner, leaving de Brassaï sprawling. The Acronian side were certainly somewhat surprised at having conceded so quickly to such a defensive team, but were able to regroup and take control of possession fairly quickly led by the captain Trésor. Methodically, their midfielders probed for a weak spot in the Confederate defense, generating several decent chances over the next 20 minutes, but for the most part, their finishing let them down, as Munib was not seriously tested until just before half time. Trésor played an excellent ball forward to Pascale, but his first touch shot was blocked by Oleb. Fontanils trapped the ball from his chest, and made a quick turn to open up some space against Tkermec before smashing the ball toward the top corner. Munib, left slightly out of position reacting to Pascale's shot, had no chance. One all at the half.

Coming back out after the break, the Acronians seemed encouraged by their equalizer, and pressed the attack early. The Confederates looked somewhat flat footed during this time, and very nearly conceded the lead after just five minutes, as a shot from the edge of the box by le Kervelec flew by less than a foot over the bar. The pressure continued, and was eventually rewarded in the 66th minute. le Kervelec once again found himself near the edge of the area in possession, but this time played a short but perfectly timed through ball for Fontanils, who lunged forward to poke the ball past Munib and take the lead. Things were looking grim for the Black-and-Reds, with less than 25 minutes to find an equalizer while still containing the potent Acronian attack. Fortune was with them, however, and shortly after the ensuing kickoff, Zonde sent Ulcviecel down the line on a run that saw him simply outrun a mistimed tackle from Althusse. The open space behind the Acronian left back let Ulcviecel play a low, hard cross inside to Jzvanic, who dropped it back for Damot on his first touch. After taking a quick touch to settle the ball, Damot let fly from 25 yards. The ball, struck nearly dead center, knuckled and dipped, deceiving de Brassaï and sliding just inside the right post. Four minutes later, Daror brought Geladi off for Dzarkhin, signalling that he was content with a single point from the opening match, and intended to park the bus the rest of the way. Acronius threw players forward in numbers, but with the Black-and-Reds content to sit back, there was very little space available to create anything, especially after Hagaz came on for Jzvanic, who received a rousing ovation from the Confederate fans. By the time Gebara came on the replace Vladcik during stoppage time, it seemed pretty clear that no further goals would occur.

Elsewhere in Group C (Ponyville to be precise) fourth seed Mytanija earned an upset victory of Mattijana by a score of 2-1. This result leaves the Mytanar on top of the group, with the Confederacy and Acronius tied for second place. While there are no unimportant matches in a single round-robin format, our matchday two meeting with Mytanija now takes on even more importance. A win for Mytanija would see them clinch advancement to the second round, while a win for the Confederacy would, see us tied for the group lead at the very least. A draw would likely leave both side disappointed, but leave Mytanija in a much better position. The match should certainly be a closely fought affair, as neither team are particularly prone to conceding goals.

Transfer Prospects: Szlengro na Molvania!
No, I don't speak Molvanian, but foreign scouts should consider picking up a phrasebook if they want to get in on the best opportunity to add Confederate players to their rosters. Eleven players from the "Big Two" of Molvanian football made at least one appearance during qualifying, and several of them might end up elsewhere by this time next year. While better days are coming in Molvania, even their biggest clubs are still plagued by cash flow issues, and neither Interblag nor Lublova are expected to be significant buyers this off-season.

Lublova Reds Football Club
Five Lublova players featured in the qualifying campaign, ranging from defense to the attack, and while Lublova probably to not have the cash to add any big pieces to their lineup, they should at least be able to retain most of their team in order to make another run at the championship.
Dymek Raktsov - CB - 24
Raktsov is a strong, physical presence on the back line, and forms a big part of the intimidation factor for Lublova, along with his hulking teammate, Strepol. Only 24 years of age, he has years and years of contribution left to make. Lublova may not be in a financial position to make big additions to their team, but Raktsov is too important to their hopes of finishing higher than second for them to part with him this year.
Djabgor Dzarkin - LB - 24
Another 24-year-old defender, Dzarkin is probably the likeliest player for Lublova to sell. He is an important part of their back line, no doubt, but he will probably never command a higher transfer fee than this year, and his sale would provide a much needed cash infusion. While he could certainly end up with any number of SCFA teams, he should also be on the radar for foreign clubs with gaps at left back.
Vaarin Strepol - CM - 26
Strepol's sheer bulk would be nearly impossible to replace, and his departure would likely signal a complete change in philosophy at Lublova. For this reason, I expect Strepol to stay, at least for a few more years. If Lublova can't get over the hump in the coming seasons though, he may leave to chase a title elsewhere.
Jzeovak Vladcik - LM - 21
A player of Vladcik's skill and experience at only 21 is far too important to Lublova's future for them to even consider selling him at present, and for the moment, the young winger appears content to remain at his hometown club. Whether his ambitions will rise in the future remains to be seen.
Demkjo Jzvanic - CF - 27
Jzvanic played his way into a starting role for the Black-and-Reds over the course of qualifying, and rumors say he is eyeing a bigger contract than Lublova can afford. He is still signed through the end of next year, so the Reds could retain him for another title shot, but if the right offer comes along, they might be convinced to sell.

Interblag Football Club
Interblag, simply put, are in financial trouble. While money is tight at Lublova, it is near nonexistent in Lutenblag. Molvania's oldest and best supported club has been shamefully, if not criminally mismanaged, and rumors abound that the SCFA and CBP are working on a joint investigation into their finances. Interblag will certainly be selling this year, and it could turn into a fire sale.
Stovar Krieven - GK - 24
Krieven could be the goaltender of the future for a club with an aging start, or, as he is at Interblag, the goaltender of the now. His excellent play, not allowing a single goal in 225 minutes played during qualifying showed that he is ready to take on a starting role against high level opposition. There will almost certainly be a bidding war for his services, both among the rich Brantid and Algolian clubs in the Confederacy, as well as clubs abroad.
Ctibor Tkermec - CB - 29
Tkermec is another player who made a good enough impression during qualifying to move himself up into the starting lineup. While slightly undersized for a Squornshelan center back, he has good instincts and a wealth of experience. He won't bring as high a price as he might have a few years ago, but he definitely still has a few years to give to whichever club takes him on.
Jinkzta Ulcivecel - RB/WB - 26
Ulcviecel is speed incarnate. He is played at wing back on the national team, and in a slightly more defensive position for his club, but could transition to play winger if necessary. His age will definitely add to the expected fee, and I would definitely look for him to take his talents abroad.
Gezan Djanetic - LM - 26
After making only a single appearance during qualifying and losing his spot in the top 23 to Ozol Gebara, Djanetic's star is not rising. As the left midfielder enters his prime and his club looks to raise money, he is a prime candidate to play elsewhere next year.
Zholtokh Dzrenin - CM - 34
Long-time team captain Dzrenin is probably the only player on this Interblag list who is absolutely not going to be sold. Literal riots would likely occur if he were sold, and in his mid-thirties, it's questionable that another club would want to spend enough money on him to make that PR disaster worth Interblag's while.
Przemors Dzetker - CF - 29
Dzetker was impressive in limited appearances during qualifying, and though he is nearing the end of his physical prime, he has the ability to be a cerebral, veteran presence at center forward, facilitating the attack of any club. Domestically, he mostly seems to be targeted by Brantid clubs, most notably Olympia Arkintoofle and Megabrantid SC, but his play could also draw attention from foreign clubs.

Until next time, I'm Salwan, you're not. Keep reading.

At the Derby Field, Mannehatan, a short while upon entry to the field

The 65-thousand-seater stadium was packed with people, sentient ponies as well as other species. The match was about to begin and everybody was making chants, no matter that most fans were neutral, the Cup of Harmony was about to begin for group B and everyone was equally excited. That excitement however, was translated sort of like a pressure in the locker rooms, at least in the Juven side, as the Krytenian side's enviroment was not really scouted and it was really just uncharted territory. The players were silent, and were about to take this game as if their lives depended on it. Not only did this bring pressure to them, but their own leader's anxiety drove most everyone insane. However, upon calming down, Dudu exclaimed...

"Alright everyone, it's 5 minutes before the game, I guess it's time for some sort of an emotional, heart-warming speech or maybe I can just throw a couple of jokes to break down the ice. Don't be nervous everyone, just overcome it!"

Everyone burst into laughter, followed by an abrupt and awkward silence, as Dudu was thinking of what to say. Everyone gazed their pairs of eyes on to the leader, he really was the hero of the team, unbeknownst to him, of course. However, he soon picked up what he wanted to say.

"But jokes aside, this is the first matchday of a long Cup of Harmony run, against none other than the veterans of Krytenia. I see many of you have this feeling that they're a scary squad and that if we 'somehow' fail to beat them that you'll have the same fate as Campana and let me tell you what... you won't have the same fate as him because we have an actual chance of winning the whole thing this time, don't play like your life depends on it, because that worries you all and you won't be able to perform on your 100%. Instead, everyone needs to focus on delivering our traditional aggressive style of football for as long as we possibly can. This is a young squad, I can see it on everyone's eyes that you're all innocent and all, but this, this is a run we will sure as hell enjoy. Let's get our first win everyone, there's many to come ahead."

The squad was confused, but everyone applauded anyway. What Dudu said seemed off, however he had a point, he wanted the team to win and by being repetitive he sort of achieved what he wanted to achieve. Everyone was positive right before entry to the pitch and everyone seemed to have relaxed as well, something that would prove vital in the upcoming game.

At the Derby Field, Mannehatan, a few seconds prior to the premier's start

The coin flip was won by the Krytenian side, which apparently came with no roster paper on the field and the players only had numbers on their jerseys, something that the Juven players shrugged off to, since they were used to teams coming rosterless for big competitions. Clovis Bret and Nino Russo were standing close to each other, the latter sighed, Bret was able to break the ice once more by saying

"At least they came rosterless and not red-headed like that c*** from Freeport, uh, Alistair, is that his name?"

"Haha, yea, that's the man, still feeling sorry for poor Martell, he'd probably beat his ass if he wasn't the calm as heckles type. But the stuff he called the ref afterwards was insanely brutal. 'What the f*** ref?' 'It was just a f***ing tackle, chill your t***, aye sir?' it seriously got me upset."

"That's true, anyway, your eyes on the ball dear sir."

"Will do, let's get the free win."

The team went to the game with its heads up, and by half-time the scoreline was 1-1, with a Tafani header to break the ice, only for the happiness to be brought down short by a Krytenian equaliser soon after, it was a fairly balanced game at first but at the second half a dosage of bad luck was required to drive the Juven goal machine crazy. A screamer by Martell at the dying minutes of the game was enough to secure the team's first victory of what was hopefully a streak of wins towards a Cup of Harmony expected to be brought back home.

OOC: As nobody has opposed the idea of cross-posting between the CoH thread and the WC81 thread, here is a copy-paste of the RP I posted here. If this is not fine, please let me know and I will probably abandon the WC posting and focus on this tournament.

The eSports tournament mentioned is hopefully going to happen - if you want a player or fan of your nation to be included, send me a TG! Scorination happens through xkoranate's football function, and there is no RP bonus or anything. All I'll do is give all the eSports-pros a high rank and the fans a low one. Your TG should include at the very least the gamer name and nation of your player, but of course you're free to include more info - the more I have, the more I'll try to mention when I RP the tournament!

Inside the NAK Andersson Fan Village

By Yuri Milkarainen

The Fan Villages set up by NAK Andersson throughout the World Cup lands proved to be great attractions loved by fans, and often provided great atmosphere so far. Tonight, for the second match of the Banijan National Team, I decided to visit the Fan Village in the capital of Busukuma. This is one of the biggest villages NAK Andersson had set up, and one of the most popular as many fans stay here for at least part of their stay. Of course, it is already packed with Banijan fans three hours before the kick-off, as you can spend all day sitting here and watching football. Upon entering, visitors pass a zone lined with stands, where Banijan souvenirs and World Cup memorabilia are offered. As this zone was rented out by NAK Andersson to local suppliers, it is a colourful world showcasing a Banijan market, selling all kinds of goods. Once we pass the entrance gate, to my left I see a big bar offering the products supplied by the official World Cup partners, but also more local food, which is where my company is immediately headed. I stroll further down towards the big screen, where the second half of Darmen vs. Pasarga airs. To the left, after the main bar, follows the small temporary sports shop, selling jerseys of all competing nations as well as the official match ball and further sportive accessories. In order to blend in, I help myself to one of the gorgeous Banijan kits, the main seller here in Busukuma.

Leaving again with my brand new football jersey, I reunite with my friends to check out the second main attraction besides the match. This is the NAK Andersson Media Lounge, right after the entrance, a big tent in which Savojarna displays its latest developments in electronic entertainment. In the Media Lounge, lines sometimes form along the five flatscreens where people can play the official World Cup 81 video game. I sit down together with my friend Petteri to settle an old dispute about who is the better virtual footballer. Fitting my new shirt, I play with the Banijan national team while Petteri, being the old provocateur he is, chooses the Equestrian States. It doesn't take long until local youth have assembled around us and cheer me, the obvious foreigner wearing their jersey and playing their team, on to beat their virtual rivals. Things go badly as Petteri makes his opening goal - of course with the famous Pristina Shine. My Banijans pick up the slack and before the break, a shot by Kahara hits the net. The second half sees some serious Finnish trash talk as we get increasingly frustrated with the referee and get swept up in the atmosphere of the fan village and the virtual rivalry unfolding on our screens. The kids around me scream along as my Toyuwa Okafor falls to the ground injured and the referee doesn't even blow his whistle. However, I do manage a goal and humiliate Petteri with my 2-1 victory over him, much to the entertainment of the kids.

Later on this week, the pros will take the five battle stations as NAK Andersson have chosen Busukuma to be a site of their eSports-tournament, in which people from all over the world can sign up to play against invited professional players. 32 random fans will be drawn to play on-stage in four tournaments, to be played on the stage in Busukuma, Moravica, New City and Baseton. On the day of the final, the two best players of each tournament travel to New City to compete against 24 invited pros for the World Cup. We sign up for the Busukuma stage of the tournament and hope to be drawn, but for now we move in line for the main attraction of the fan village. The Football Immersement Experience was set up to showcase Andersson's use of new technology and consists of a separate area within the media lounge. Using a camera system and sensors in the ground, the FIE gives you a VR goggle set to let you replay a scene of your choice that was relevant for World Cup history. For each team present in Banija and the Free Republics, one scene was chosen that gave them some success; and to celebrate their heritage, Andersson also put in a Savojar scene, Freya Sigurdsdottir's 2-1 against Eshan that allowed the Savojars to go to their first ever World Cup.

And this is the scene that I choose when it finally is my turn to try. Suddenly, I am standing on the pitch wearing a Savojar national team jersey, and an arrow shows me which way I should run. It feels awkward to run more or less in place so that I don't leave the camera's radius, but it works surprisingly well. Having been shown a video from the audience perspective before, I know what the system expects me to do - get in place, take the pass that Jarkasjärvi will give me, and score. I look to the left and see the ball approaching, trying to stop it with Sigurdsdottir's chest. Suddenly I see a defender in front of me, being too late for the turn I am supposed to do. My virtual self somehow stumbles past the defender, but my shot attempt lands far beyond the goal - to the amusement of people around me, who can see both myself and my virtual effort on a split screen. Petteri tries the Brenecian scenario, the winning goal of the last World Cup, but to my relief he looks just as bad at it as I do.

Having tried out own hand at this, we now march outside to watch the game. In the back, there is no cover or seats, meaning that people have to hope it won't rain. In the front, however, there is a large white sunscreen above our heads protecting us from the setting Banijan sun (or any surprising rain), and rows of seats. We are quick enough to nab one of them, and can watch the game in comfort as the Banijans take on Apox. The atmosphere around us is amazing, as you could expect from a nation like Banija that hosts the World Cup - we have seen before, especially in Savojarna at the WCoH 34, how excited the people here can get. As the match ends and Banija win the game to qualify for the World Cup octofinals early on, the fan zone almost explodes. As after every match day, local DJ's take over the scene to celebrate with the winners and console the losers. It took us a long time until we ended up in, or on, our boda boda home, but once we do, we are exhausted and amazed. The NAK Andersson Fan Villages - we can recommend them!
MT socialist (mostly) island state - Cultural mixture of Scandinavia, Finland and Russia -Exports iron, steel, silver and wood - Low fantasy in terms of animal species - Sports-loving - 22.8 million inhabitants.

The adjective is Savojar; Savojarnan is not a word!
I am a student of (European) politics, ice hockey fan, left-wing communist bordering on anarchy, and European federalist. Enjoy!

ÖRKENDREM PAPERS

A TIEED START

Article written by: Edrÿk Tërmaserl

The Cup of Harmony-campain started with a tied match at the Apple Orchard Park stadium in Appeloosa. With 45,213 full seats, the match was nothing exiting exept that the match ended in a tie and that both of the teams have been placed on the top of the group. We expect the groupplay to be exiting, especily since the start is the most important part of any sporting-event.

The match started, but it took 15 minutes for the first goal to Geiserfired as Lindström scored his first goal in his international carrier. And while i took Darkmania 25 min after that to score their first with Bernsüng. Well, an unnamed Geiserfired player who caused the own goal. We are not gonna name him here, he`s getting grilled in his home country.

The 2nd Half were more exiting. And by that, i mean that there were more movements. Darkmania got a goal at `79 with Përsater with a high left to right shot into the goal, but Geiserfired got a goal literly few minutes later. Thiessen was thristy for a goal at `81. And that's the match.

Dear Nana,

Cassadaigua is so weird. I’m glad to still be in Rushmore, but Cassadaigua still feels like a different world. They warned us about this place being a “female-dominated society”, and it just seems wrong. We’re based in New Lakeland which is supposed to be somewhat equal, which still seems like false advertising to me. I’ll be glad to be back home.

If we don’t play better, that will be two games from now. We lost to The Macabees. Being in Cassadaigua is weird, and the The Macabees game was weird. They were without Lakén Yori (rest in peace), so they were playing in his memory, but it was so recent that they were out of sorts.

And to help them along, we were out of sorts as well. We knew The Macabees would try to slow us down and prevent us from playing our game. And they did. We tried to push the tempo. Overwhelm them. Didn’t work. But they gave us opportunities that we utterly failed to follow up on. Easy misses, shooting over the bar, Ruran l’Ermite screwed up an easy pass to a streaking Eneour Pique-Pain and tried to squeeze the ball into a surrounded Brevalan Gaspard. A pointless error.

Enrik Nestor scored for The Macabees in the 27th minute. Naris Maniflora scored for The Macabees in the 39th minute on a penalty kick. We got one back by Phelippon de Gentilli in the 55th minute, but we couldn’t do anything else.

What I will remember the most is Kerrian Odierne, who almost never puts a foot wrong, taking a pass from Marzin Petit along the side line, and then promptly spinning the wrong way with the ball and kicking it out of bounds, right in front of Manager de l’Amie. They both stared at each other, lifting their hands up, shoulders in a shrug. Just that kind of game, I guess. It happens. But you don’t have room to give games away with three games in a group stage.

Off to Northbury then. Let’s see unlimited Cassadaiguan female domination and Main Nation Ministry. Maybe now that the novelty has worn off we can try winning again.

Love,

Nycollas

OOC: Sorry again, guys, but in accordance with the Zeroth Law of Roleplay (i.e. RL > NS), the "mindfuckery with the Tinhampton squad" I promised y'allsies must wait until Matchday 3 or the round of 16. Actually, I have a completely different bit of Tinhamptonian mindfuckery I have planned for then...

WHAT TINHAMPTON NEED TO GO ALL THE WAY
Can - or, more likely, will - the Miners have the energy in them for perfection? Professor Owen Winter investigates for us, haha

Priscilla Evans, take a bow! As so many people have already documented, you struck twice to both ensure that Tinhampton jumped onto something vaguely resembling Easy Street and make life so much easier for those that wished to re-edit the match to remove any men in it. Not that she'll need to anyway, with prospective back problems unsurprisingly being forced to go into reserve ahead of the desire for victory.

Wait, did somebody say "victory?"

Yeah, that's right, after winning 2-0 over Beepee, the Miners are now a mere six games away from hoisting aloft the famous trophy on their third try. No matter what you think about who did what to Zack Pierce or August Marti or heaven forbid some long-retired footballer from out back, one thing is for certain: The nation is united under the flag for the first time. Can you imagine the scenes if we qualified for the World Cup?

You'll have to for now, as these latest predictions from Professor Owen Walker using the globally National Soccer Future Scores system only demonstrate the chances of Julia Atherton hosting the silver and marble up high at the Royal Equestria in Canterlot; with Tinhampton having snuck their way in past Beepee, their aspirations for the rest of the tournament are facing quite the high! Tinhampton face a good 49% probability of victory and 24% of the draw against Kelssek, whilst they face only a 39% probability of triumphing over Freeport compared to 30% of drawing and 31% of defeat.

Upon that point, the Miners are likely to face off against Eastfield Lodge - where there appears to be a 55% likelihood of collapsing to defeat - or against South Toronto, when we have a similar chance of winning. Upon that stage, if our 54% chance of defeating Siovanija and Teusland or our scarce 44% possibility of trumping Jeruselum prove to be unnecessary calculations, it appears that only 35% of the time should Tinhampton defeat Savojarna, thereby inevitably bringing Tinhampton's campaign to the most premature of ends.

The optimist in you will be disappointed, although those of us who demand a better challenge for Tinhampton - or, hopefully more likely, time travellers from the future - will find ideal material to gaggle around.

Lydia Gould: It is in everybody's best interests that Daniel Steer withdraws
It's confession time: How many of you were expecting Kevin Wright, widely seen as the "establishment candidate" in the recent Tinhamptonian elections, to be eliminated before the final rounds? I certainly wasn't, although history may well have turned out slightly differently if not for a few.
For starters, Liam Peterson admitted to Vox Antipopuli, the notorious centre-right blogger otherwise known as Kane Teller, yesterday afternoon that he had convinced no less than two Free Democrats in Vanessa Davis' camp to pledge support to Ms Howard on the grounds of her largely anti-fascist stance, which stands at odds to Mr Steer's tolerance and even alliance with the issue (best demonstrated in his opposition to what sadly remains the LGBTQ+ Hate Speech Eradication Bill, although it must be admitted that Ryan Terrence is more infamous for such tendencies).
Mr Wright, mostly a backbencher who was promoted to Foreign Minister after his forebear was (and remains) held captor by an iron-fisted and ironically-named monarch, has been seen as all-too-much a lapdog of Mayor John Price - until Friday, that is - a major turn-off for many in the centre, otherwise attracted to Howard or, lest they find her warmongering slightly overkill, Steer. The Libertarian candidate could, however, face quite the walkover from disgruntled members of the right-wing establishment wildly trampling over the Free Democratic virtual contingent of six, regardless of both of their lacking of experience.
Of course, this is Tinhampton, so imperfection is not just unintentional but a day-to-day reality. By this point in time, although the TFA's government recognition is now a non-issue, some of those who are still in the midst of the battle might doubt the ability of Howard to enable state funding of grassroots football through the Association as has been the case for about twenty years - maybe pointing to Damukuni's failure to qualify for a major tournament for the first time in several cycles. What, then, about Steer's steadfast opposition to a less direct proposed source of funding for both young military soldiers and would-be Mohamed al-Khazrs, the Soft Drinks Charge that comes into force next July, sixteen cents per litre for drinks with more than 7% sugar content?
Today, we witness a certain imperium bearing a bundle of fasces - that shall not be named on these respectable columns, of course - annihilating enemy forces left, right and mostly downwards, dragging with it enough overpowering soldiers and equipment to make an Electrumite turnip blush, let alone a Mytaniar one. Certainly Steer would concur and go against Wright on the matter that the Military Minister was justified in not claiming any land for Tinhampton during the recent civil war, although he does remain paranoid that one of our other spheres of influence - Gladom Newion, say, or Neokarta - could fall under the cosh of Tinhamptonian forces in due course, and with very good reason, too. Why should Mayor Steer do anything at all to impede a fellow cabinet minister's progress, if she does hang in there in the end?
The short answer is that he shouldn't: Any attempts to remove Howard would be seen as unjust by the large United Conservative caucus, to refuse to block her manouvers despised by the Libertarians, and to stop them from happening at all would result in a serious talking-to by the rest of the cabinet concerning cabinet unity - the latter of which could seriously pose a rapid trail to 1 Gasworks Road for the Social Democrats. Steer, by contrast, and his less noteworthy post as the Business Standards Minister hands Howard little of a burden of any description in choosing to deal with him or not.

In politics, as in football, nobody has a guaranteed right to anything and compromise always ends with blood on the floor, even if it is the model of freedom and tolerance under the blue flag political wonks constantly obsess over but never manage to find. In this case, that said, even refusing to strike a deal will lead either to the walkout of Chris Vassell, Harriet Evans, Jake Wall - or the Libertarians themselves. Had John Price not been overruled in appointing his ally Oliver Feather to the Ministry of the Military on that fateful night last August, it is likely that my article would be entitled "It is in everybody's best interests that Paul Halston resigns."

Not Afraid of the Dark(manians)
Geisen Nationalmannschaft opens up Cup of Harmony play with a 2-2 draw

APPLEOOSA, EQUESTRIAN STATES - It feels like it's been a long while since the Geisen national team has been in the Equestrian States. AOCAF 56, hosted there, was Geisenfried's return to international sport after a long absence, and the disparity in experience showed, losing to hosts Equestrian States and falling to neighbors and current World Cup hosts Banija before finally managing to scrap together a draw against Sangti, another team making their debut after an international break. But after a long World Cup qualifying campaign that saw an unranked Geisenfried squad fly from the cellar all the way to third place in the group, it feels like the team returning to the Equestrian States for the 73rd Cup of Harmony Invitational is an entirely different squad, despite the roster having the exact same list of names that started this cycle. And while no one but the most hopeful might have expected anything of them during AOCAF, suddenly the squad finds itself performing under the weight of expectations.

The group draw did them no favors, however - D apparently stands for 'Death', as the top seeded rank in the first, third and fourth pots all managed to drop into the same bucket, leaving the group's average rank as the lowest in the entire competition. Only B comes close, filled with teams all in the top half of their pot. Compared to group H, which has two of the lowest ranked teams in their respective pots and the second lowest ranked team from the top pot, there's nearly a 20 average rank difference separating the two groups. Still, as much as you might like to blame the lottery balls, Geisenfried had shown their mettle against teams of similar ranking throughout the qualifying campaign and had managed to prevail - and they would have no one to question but themselves if they failed to show up here at the Cup of Harmony.

Their first test would be against Darkmania, and Geisenfried came out swinging, showing an uncharacteristic offensive push in the early minutes of the match, perhaps trying to catch the Darkmanians off-guard. It seemed to pay off at the quarter-hour mark, as a ball pressed wide by Ërimär turned into a Geisen corner. Mariusz Jaeger would take the kick, launching a long high lob to the center of the box. Oskar Lindström would push himself forward and make a high jump, heading the ball forward and past the Darkmania defense to score the first goal of his international career and give the Geisens a one-nil lead. Darkmania began pressing forward more after finding themselves in the deficit, but it wouldn't be until the end of the half that they'd find their equalizer. A low cross by Bernsüng would clip off the calf of Niklaus Ziegler and find its way into the side of the net, with keeper Jonas Wieser unprepared for the ricochet that would leave it tied one all at the break.

By the time the second half had begun, the two teams settled into a back and forth affair, neither quite managing to find the advantage until as the ten minute till mark approached, when Geisen defender Hector Ostmark made a questionable foul outside the box, earning a card and leaving Darkmania with a golden set piece opportunity. Përsater made the most of it, sending a high curving ball from left to right to curl underneath the bar and beyond Wieser's finger tips to give the Darkmanians the lead with not much left in the match to go. The Golden Eagles showed no fear, however, once play restarted, attacking ferociously until a Rudi Löwenthal cross found a breaking Kieran Thiessen, who headed it home into the opposite corner to equalize it at 2-2, where the match would eventually conclude.

While every match is likely to be an uphill battle, and managing to come back, not stumble, and put a point in the table is worth something, Darkmania was still the best chance for Geisenfried to rack up some points if they hoped to reach the knockout stage in the competition, something that has eluded Geisenfried for generations at this point. Die Steinadler will stay in Appleloosa for their next match, against group and possibly even tournament favorites in Abanhfleft. Having also drawn against Omerica, Geisenfried for now stands atop them in the standings thanks to goals scored, but there are no delusions of an easy match or group to come.

Geisenfried 2 - 2 Darkmania

Cup of Harmony - Match Day 2
Cassadaigua, New Lakeland

Match Report

Beepee 1 vs. 1 Freeport

On a glorious day at New Lakeland, Beepee and Freeport Isles met on Match Day 2 of the Cup of Harmony.

Both teams had lost their first and knew the importance of a win. Beepeean fans and bookmakers were pessimistic of their chances, with national betting agency seeing a run of Freeport in the hours leading up to the match.

Final Pre-Match odds from BeepeeBet

Freeport win.......... Evens
Draw....................... 3/2
Beepee win............ 25/1

The massive 91,000 seater New Lakeland Stadium was filled to almost capacity with a large and vocal Beepeean contingent cheering on their team.

Weather Report
Sunny with a chance of some clouds creeping into the glorious blue skies towards the evening. A light easterly breeze will keep fans and players cool in the stadium, as temperatures reach 21 degrees Celsius.

Honours were even at the end of the match with neither team coming out on top in a terse and tough affair.

With end to end free flowing play, there were plenty of chances. However, the end result will likely please neither team.

Highlights

• Malade goal enough to salvage a draw, following Royle's first half opener

• Beepee's hopes rest on final match against Kelssek.

• Carlo Bannan fails to deliver again

The Bulldozers and Condottieri fought a tight game, having to withstand periods of sustained pressure from the each other in the process.

Beepee nearly went in front early on, when Chris Patterson’s cross wasn’t dealt with by Bloodblade, who was put under pressure by Niklaus Malade, and the loose ball was pounced upon by Sam Veera who lashed wide.

Freeport looked to respond, Puzzle Piece firing over from distance, before Torvald Royle came close to levelling, heading just wide from a long throw into the box by Storm Chill.

On the whole though Freeport were comfortably dealing with Beepee’s attempts to play the ball long, Bloodblade and Alastair winning a lot of the aerial challenges at the back.

In the 22nd minute, Storm Chill threaded the Beepeean defence to play in Torvald Royle, and the winger made no mistake, slotting past Francois Shep.

Beepee were failing to keep pace with the Condottieri and it was clear Beepee needed a response. Just before the half hour mark, Beepee Head Coach Coleen Yu brought on Liam Chang for Carlo Bannan in an attempt to change things up.

Just after the half hour, after a spell of pressure, Beepee were nearly back in it. A long throw from Dirk Bolt wasn’t dealt with by the Freeport defence, and it fell to Chang to lash home, however he scuffed the ball sending it high and wide.

Freeport had a shout for a penalty as the half winded down, and Sonar Amethyst headed over from close range not long after.

HALF TIME
BEEPEE 0 - 1 FREEPORT

Max Christian made way for Aaron St. Pier at the break, and the change helped Beepee to stifle Freeport in the early periods of the second half, before the equalising goal came on the hour.

Dirk Bolt was involved again, creating space down the left to fire in a cross for Niklaus Malade to head home.

The goal drove Beepee who sought the winner, Yu sent on Scott Kirk for Claude Boles in search of a way back into the game. Changing to a 3-4-1-2 formation. They almost found it moments later, with Patterson bursting down the right to cross for Veera who headed wide.

That was probably Beepee’s best chance to win the game, with Freeport seeing out the final periods to share the points.

OOC - Internet cut at home due to dodgy fibre cable last two days!

Jeruselem coach Princess Chloe and her sister Princess Cassandra in Cassadaigua after two group games of the Cup of Harmony 73 ...

Chloe: So we play Oberour Ar Moro next, I guess we've played the higher ranked teams first which is good
Cassie: The loss to Main Nation Ministry was unexpected though
Chloe: The first game in any new competition is always the hardest one, because you have to get used to a new place
Cassie: I guess beating The Macabees was a good thing considering they were the other high ranked team
Chloe: We had to win that one or we were on the way out
Cassie: Yeah ...

Chloe: We seem to have a lot of fans here in Cassadaigua
Cassie: It's the girl power thing I guess and we're Princesses
Chloe: You have the same first name as the Cassadaiguan queen too
Cassie: Yeah, not that it was on purpose
Chloe: I guess it is the girl power thing, it's real thing here in Cassadaigua.
Cassie: So what's the situation?

Chloe: We need to win, simple. Loss we're out. Draw, we could make the next round - provided Main Nation Ministry win.
Cassie: So if the Macabees win and we draw, we're probably out too.
Chloe: Actually if all teams draw, we make the next round but not likely to happen.
Cassie: So a draw isn't the death of us
Chloe: Yeah, but a win is better. We will seal a spot
Cassie: Oberour Ar Moro drew with Main Nation Ministry so they won't be easy to beat

Chloe: We don't do that well in this cup for some reason as well. Maybe the players are just not quite ready after not qualifying
Cassie: I guess you get tired mentally
Chloe: I don't really expect us to win this
Cassie: No, I'm looking at the other teams. There's real contenders out there
Chloe: It would be nice to make the quarters or semi anyway
Cassie: Say, some men hate this idea of female "domination"

Chloe: You get that, it's stupid. Us women are not just baby machines, we can do other stuff too. Say, why you looking up baby names again?
Cassie: Just planning ahead, while I'm fertile
Chloe: Well Cassie II is just silly if you're planning that one. And you have a Katherine.
Cassie: I was thinking Emily
Chloe: That's based from Aemília in Latin, old Roman name. Emma is the same ...
Cassie: Or what about Hennessy?

Chloe: Isn't that Irish, and the name of a whisky
Cassie: Yeah, I don't know. I like it.
Chloe: What if it's a boy?
Cassie: Oh, I dunno. I've leave that one to someone else.
Chloe: I might need to hurry as well.
Cassie: You know having a boy first up isn't normal in our family

Chloe: I wanted a girl, but ... anyway
Cassie: We sound like Cassadaiguans
Chloe: I'm not surprised at that one
Cassie: What if we are Cassadaiguans by accident
Chloe: You seen our DNA tests?
Cassie: I can't remember mine

Chloe: We got DNA from everywhere ... like mongrel bitches
Cassie: No inbreeding here, which is probably a good thing
Chloe: But how come all the females in our family have similar issues?
Cassie: Super strong girl genes
Chloe: Probably
Cassie: Super girly genes rule

Time to smash SHAMELESS capitalist fruit propaganda
BRAVE BEAVERS face tough but worthy battle

It's time for us to rally behind the boys as Kelssek's Brave Beavers face a do-or-die third group stage match at the Cup of Harmony and a chance to strike back for the common people against Beepee's insidious capitalist propaganda machine. What's at stake is more than a place in the knockout rounds. Underdogs they may be, it's their duty to put everything on the line to defend civilization and our way of life.

You surely have seen them at home, but be thankful you're not subject to their full fury at the competition venues in Cassadaigua. Giant billboards projecting the "sponsorship" of so-called "independent" grocers have been everywhere during the World Cup qualifiers and now at the Cup of Harmony. No one can get around the football venues without the massive and blinding logos beaming into their faces. This form of mind control is a shameful attempt to subvert the real values of real everyday people.

The light emissions have been going on all day and night, and are so disturbing to the wildlife that this reporter was swarmed by gay frogs when she was just out for a peaceful walk around Grande Mountain (very hilly, by the way). This wonderful country is being ruined by capitalist mind control and no one will lift a finger to stop it. Certainly the lizard people have given up on us by now.

Seared retinas and all, the task falls onto our humble nation to take this circus down a peg. The World Cup Committee runs a global extortion racket. Is nothing sacred? The defiling of football's temple has been actively encouraged by the powers that be, surely the most sordid, corrupt and biased outfit in history and probably responsible for a handful of war crimes too. Let's do it for the working people and strike this bourgeois fruit machine right in the gonads.

Destiny is calling. We can't help the frogs and we can't unveil the round-Earth conspiracy, but we can rally behind our team.

IC political & social commentary & criticism is not necessarily representative of my OOC beliefs. I simply tried to write the boldest piece I could ICly, whether it was my OOC opinion or not.

  • I started to write this for Copa Rushmori XXX, hosted in Cassadaigua; I did not finish it then, because I could not find the right words to do so, but I gave it another shot now, with another tournament (co-)hosted in Cassadaigua. Many thanks to Cassadaigua for very patiently answering all my questions about Cassadaiguan society & for giving me the go-ahead to publish this piece.
  • The RP should make this pretty clear, but this is set (solely for convenience’s sake) shortly before the Cup of Harmony group draw.
  • Blip kuzj Evarty Qanza is a major newspaper in Qusmo; its name translates literally from Qusmu to English as “Publication of Events of Qanz.” Qanz is the capital & largest city of Qusmo.
  • Qusmi’y are biologically androgynous; as a result, concepts such as sex, sexuality, gender, & gender norms are not natural to them. Thus, Blip kuzj Evarty Qanza has used technical-sounding words like “male” instead of “man” & “female” instead of “woman,” even in moments which are intended to be less formal & more emotional, partly out of an ignorance of the common usage of these terms in a gendered society.

Qusmi’y, always take pride in what makes you Qusma

The Qusma National Team is becoming familiar with Cassadiauga. World Cup Committee organizers have just confirmed that the Qusmi’y will play in Cup of Harmony 73, co-hosted by their Rushmori neighbours & the Equestrian States of Atlantian Oceania. The pots remain to be drawn, but Qusmo has even odds of playing another three matches in Cassadaigua - at least - on top of the four that Qusmo already played there for the XXXth edition of the Copa Rushmori. This, surely, has a great many Qusmi’y thinking about a topic that is taboo in our society; we think that we ought to break the silence.

Let’s talk about sex.

No, not that kind. Instead of XXX, we’re talking about XX & XY. One’s sex, their gender, their sexuality: all these topics are highly visible in many other nations, & they are sources of debate, discussion, & even pride. In Qusmo, though, they most certainly are not. At this time in which talk of these subjects is bubbling around the fringes of our society, we feel it is our duty to stay silent no more & talk frankly.

This is the only way we can combat these deviant notions once & for all.

Our international readers may be unfamiliar with a society free of bipolar sexual & gender norms. In most nations, most humans are divided by sex & by gender, primarily as males & men or females & women. Many of these nations see males as a “dominant sex,” superior to females. A select few - most notably Cassadaigua - recognize the opposite, with females superior to males. This is the society that appeals to so many, as an elusive goal to which all our societies across the multiverse should aspire.

Given one glance, half a brain, & a second of thought, however, it is also the chief example of why we should not.

So many of those who advocate for a female-dominated society along the lines of that of Cassadaigua come from male-dominated ones. We in Qusmo see exactly why those people would be desperate for anything but the society they now have. In male-dominated societies, females are systematically subjugated, oppressed, & dehumanized; no matter their supposed political rights or freedoms, a female that lives in a male-dominated society is not & can never be truly autonomous, nor truly safe.

Male-dominated societies are, indeed, morally repulsive, but what so many fail to realize is that female-dominated societies are no better.

Of course, female-dominated societies do not subjugate females on the basis of their sex; instead, they serve to subjugate their males. The bargain one strikes when exchanging a society dominated by one sex for another is simply which half of the population becomes the oppressor & which becomes the oppressed. Principally, this is because of a concept studied primarily in the context of male-dominated societies, & known there as toxic masculinity.

However, what is truly dangerous about a sex-segregated society is not toxic masculinity, but toxic sexuality.

Here, we transition from the realm of sex into that of gender, as we consider not biological differences, but social pressures. In a male-dominated society, females are considered to be subservient to males; in a female-dominated society, the reverse is true. This manifests itself in disparities in professional settings, whereby those of the dominant sex are typically highly overrepresented in the workforce, especially at the top levels thereof. &, of course, even if a male & a female work the same hours, at the same position, for the same employer, more often than not, they are paid unequal rates - & it is the member of the socially dominant sex which reaps the benefit.

There is no question that sex-dominant societies are discriminatory in a professional context, but this discrimination can turn into much worse in a private sphere.

Sex-dominant societies are often marked by alarming trends of violent crime. Robbery, murder, sexual assault: all these crimes are vastly overrepresented among males in male-dominated societies. What so many fail to understand, however, is that these same crimes are committed at the same rates by females in female-dominated societies. This is key, because this demonstrates that males in male-dominated societies are not intrinsically more violent than females, nor are females in female-dominated societies intrinsically more violent than males.

Instead, it is the society itself that breeds violence.

If a society impresses upon its members from their formative years that males are the ones who are strong, who use force, & who get what they want, & that females’ purpose is to serve them, is it any surprise what the despicable result is? & on the opposite side of the coin, how could a society which imposes upon its members the belief that females are strong, forceful, & on top of the world, & that males exist not for their own sake, but for females’, not bear witness to a mirror image of the violence typically attributed only to male-dominated societies?

The carnage is the same; the only difference is that the names of the perpetrators & of the victims are reversed.

&, indeed, these types of societies both usually feature a contrast between two sexes & two genders. But what so many people in both male-dominated & female-dominated societies fail to understand is that sex & gender do not have to match, & that there are more than two ways to express gender identity. Transgender, gender-fluid, & nonbinary individuals are always left out of the male-female duopoly, whether in a male-dominated or a female-dominated society. & the discrimination they have to face is some of the most dangerous & some of the most universal.

Even if, somehow, males & females could be social equals, those who refuse to conform to a male-female duopoly will always be at risk.

& the dangers of sex & gender are not confined to those social inventions alone. The existence of multiple sexes, & multiple genders, leads necessarily to the dilemma of sexuality. Of course, heterosexual pairings are almost universally socially accepted in a way that homosexuality rarely is. This is usually explained away as the way people can reproduce; however, if this were true, there would be little trouble with those who were, for example, bisexual or pansexual. Instead, the lie is evident.

In gendered societies, sexuality is a tool of the dominant sex to subjugate the dominated sex - & to subjugate those who refuse to participate in the subjugation.

So how can anyone advocate for a gendered society of any kind? No matter whether the society is male-dominated or female-dominated, there will always be profound discrimination, injustice, violence, & pain as a result. The only possibility is that those who believe in a gendered future are misinformed or ignorant. It is true that androgynous societies like that of Qusmo are not common around the multiverse, but they exist. They are a real possibility. & they are the best option to form a perfect society. They are the only option.

So, if Qusmo plays in Cassadaigua during the Cup, do not be enamoured with their hosts; take pride in the fact that you, Qusmi’y, represent the multiverse’s only hope for Harmony.

An explosion of late excitement at Elements Stadium in Ponyville, Equestrian States meant that Mytanija won their opener in the Cup of Harmony – a 91st minute goal from Tahir Fejzuli being enough to defeat Mattijana and put the Mytanars top of the group following a stunning upset. Not too many had given the side a chance in this game, with plenty of pundits believing that Mattijana would raise their performance compared to the two games the sides played out during World Cup qualifying. Instead, Mytanija were impressive, dogged in defence and after the hour mark were incisive when going forwards too.

The first half could be used in years to come as an example of what tournament football can do to teams, with neither side willing to take the game to the other in case they made a mistake and could be caught with a speedy counter-attack. The Mytanar approach during World Cup qualifying was often one of safety first, attempting to minimise goals conceded and then take advantage of the few opportunities the team may create when going forwards. Mattijana were nearly the polar opposite during qualifiers, with a gung-ho approach that meant they scored 57 goals in 18 games (on average just over 3 goals a game!), a strike rate that even Eura – #1 in the NSWC rankings – couldn’t match.

The best chance in the first 45 minutes fell to Mattijana and Jessika Struna, the pacey winger had ghosted in at the back post – evading Tihomir Feric’s attention for the first time in the game – around the half hour mark. Marko Hojbjerg didn’t need any incentive to play a beautifully chipped ball over the Mytanar back-line, weighted perfectly to play Struna onside whilst simultaneously staying away from the Mytanar defence. Struna controlled the ball on the bounce and her first touch let her down, making the opportunity slightly more difficult than necessary. She swiped with her right foot, connecting with the ball on the half-volley. It forced a decent save from Jasmin Savic at his near post as he parried the ball away, out for a corner kick.

The resulting corner didn’t lead to anything productive for Mattijana, but it very nearly did for Mytanija.

A towering defensive header from captain Damir Azanovic looped away from the Mytanar penalty area and it was flicked on by Tahir Fejzuli, a sideways swipe that skidded away across the turf towards the sideline just inside Mattijana’s defensive half. Jezdimir Ocokoljic hared away after the ball with Burnisević in hot pursuit. Ocokoljic kept the ball in, turning towards the Mattijana end of the field and with a deft touch, flicked the ball through the Mattijana captain’s legs as she bore down on him. He sped away leaving her in his wake and approached the Mattijana goal, Illicić came across to cover and Ocokoljic immediately attempted to square it to Aleksic on the edge of the penalty area. However, the pass was a little behind the Tekstil forward and although he tried to aim a shot on target it narrowly went wide. Ocokoljic raised his hand, apologising to his team mate, knowing a better pass could have seen the Mytanars 1-0 up.

The half-time whistle sounded and Robin Hjik was likely the slightly more pleased of the two managers. A draw would be a reasonable result for Mytanija from this fixture, although naturally he wanted to win, something he had made clear in a passionate press conference pre-game. The side had played fairly well defensively, limiting Mattijana’s famed attack to only one real clear-cut chance and towards the end of the first period the side had grown into the game and started to create some half-chances of their own. Odonelec was the key going forward and a good pass from him out towards the right flank for Aleksic had nearly created an opportunity on the counter, but the forward had narrowly strayed offside.

Dusan Vukoja had obviously given a very good team talk in the half-time interval as the Mattijana side looked like a different team when they came out for the second-half. For the first 15 minutes of the second period they were electric, pressing high out of possession and causing the Mytanar team problems across the pitch when they won the ball back. Almost straight after kick-off Lekarisa missed a good opportunity following Adrianov’s fine tackle in the middle of the pitch. Adrianov had dispossessed Todorov and fired a ball out to Velezia who touched the ball past Isaev and played a delightfully curled ball straight to Lekarisa who took one touch to get the ball out of her feet before firing low and rattling the post. Savic had been stranded and the ball thankfully fell to Obadko after hitting the woodwork, with the defender clearing the ball out of play as a precautionary measure.

After that chance it felt like a matter of time until Mattijana would score as wave after wave of navy shirted attack charged towards the Mytanar goal. In the 55th minute the breakthrough would finally come. Struna – making up for her earlier saved effort – played a slick one-two with Lekarisa off the right-flank, the pass from Lekarisa turning the entire Mytanar back-line and Struna sped past Feric –who lunged to try and tackle the tricky winger – before rifling home a low effort past Savic who had played pretty admirably to that point and probably couldn’t be faulted for the goal either.

As Struna celebrated with her team mates, Hjik and Repin were already trying to alter the game from the bench as they signalled for Stojkovic to come back from warming up as they looked to substitute him on. The Hoops had only scored 20 goals during World Cup qualifying and to even get an equaliser therefore looked like it could be a little unlikely. They therefore substituted Stojkovic on for Elvahic – who would normally sit a little deeper – in the hope that the Ararat could be the spark the team needed to create a real goal scoring opportunity when they most needed one. It meant sacrificing a little stability in midfield, but it was necessary as this game had looked a little like it could be going away from Mytanija.

For the first couple of minutes following the substitution, it was more of the same. Mattijana won the ball back after kick-off and immediately swung the ball out to Struna, with the winger looking like she really fancied the battle against Tihomir Feric following her goal. But then things started to change, Stojkovic was another reliable presence in possession in the centre of the park and that took a little pressure off Tahir Fejzuli who had been near enough man-marked out of the game by Jakupovic, who had been excellent. Mytanija were starting to beat the Mattijana press, when the centre backs had the ball they now had another option, a player who could take the ball and flick it past a defender and then send a pass onto somebody further up the field. It was a minor change, merely different personnel, but it turned out to be a masterstroke as Mytanija began to control more possession and pin the Mattijana defensive line further back in their own half.

As the game wore on it felt like Mytanija would perhaps create one really good chance and they would have to be decisive with it, as despite the possession, they were unable to really get the ball to the likes of Ocokoljic, Aleksic and Odonelec in really dangerous positions. Odonelec had an effort from just outside the penalty box saved, Ocokoljic was having lumps kicked out of him and Aleksic just wasn’t having his finest game. It was difficult for them, but the increasing proportion of time spent with the ball did give them heart, if nothing else.

Feric looked spent on 72 minutes and Srdan Vukovic was sent on, the younger full-back would be required to keep Struna quiet for the remainder of the game, not an easy challenge. This substitution was at first viewed as an admission that Mytanija may need to keep it tight at the back to avoid conceding a second. Particularly given the amount of possession they’d enjoyed, not something the team were all that used to.

However, Vukovic’s speed, combined with his knowledge of playing higher up the field was actually used as an offensive tactical move by Hjik (and more likely Lev Repin, who is known as the more tactical mind of the pair). Vukovic has played as a left-sided midfielder before and for the remaining twenty minutes or so, he had been tasked with playing high up the field. Jasno Odonelec had also been instructed to pull left. This created an overload down the right-side of Mattijana’s defence on the full-back Krychowiak. To compensate for Vukovic being higher up the field, Azanovic shifted across ever so slightly, Obadko played more central than as a right-sided centre-back and Isaev tucked in on the right to create a pseudo-back three.

It is likely that Hjik and Repin had envisioned this substitution working in one of two ways: 1) that the overload down the left would give Mytanija a 2 vs. 1 situation against the relatively inexperienced Mattijana right-back or 2) that Vukovic playing high would force Struna to track back and defend so that Mytanija would not have a 2 vs. 1 against Krychowiak.

It turned out to be Option 1. Mattijana’s offensive approach was exposed as Struna remained high up the field, often on the halfway line or just inside the Mytanar half when Mytanija had possession and Odonelec and Vukovic began to enjoy two-on-ones versus Krychowiak who was left unsupported. It led to Mytanija’s equaliser, Vukovic received the ball from Fejzuli and dribbled towards Krychowiak, releasing a quick pass to Odonelec who was on the edge of the 18-yard box. As Krychowiak tried to move across to squeeze Odonelec, he returned the ball around the corner to Vukovic. Vukovic just about kept the ball from going out for a goal kick, stopping it dead and waiting, Krychowiak sprinted towards him leaving Odonelec unmarked about 12 yards out and Vukovic played the ball back to him with Odonelec crashing the ball into the net through a sea of bodies.

Handanovic, the Mattijana goalkeeper, was entirely unsighted with Ocokoljic, Aleksic and the two Mattijana centre-halves between her and the ball and whilst Odonelec’s finish was good, this definitely made the job a lot harder for her. That didn’t matter to Mytanija though as they were level and firmly on-top in the game too.

Ocokoljic had found it difficult in this fixture, with the Mattijana defence prepared to leave in some physical challenges on the young forward and Hjik decided that for the last ten minutes a more robust approach was necessary. He sent on Alen Zekic for Ocokoljic and the misfiring front man played an important part in the eventual winner, showing that scoring goals doesn’t have to be the only way you can contribute to winning games.

The fourth official indicated that there would be three minutes added on for Mytanija to score a winner – or at least not concede a goal that would be both entirely against the run of play in the second half and extremely deflating for the rest of the tournament.

A beautiful pass from Odonelec to Aleksic on the edge of the Mattijana penalty area was quickly turned to Zekic who fired at Handanovic’s goal, with the goalkeeper only able to swipe the ball over the crossbar. The resulting corner was played in by Odonelec and at first seemingly dealt with quite well by the Mattijana defenders, headed back out around the edge of the 18-yard box on the side Odonelec had taken the corner from.

Odonelec kept the ball from going out of play and whipped in a fierce cross, Zekic flicked the ball further across towards the back post and there to nod it in was Tahir Fejzuli (yes, Tahir Fejzuli scored a header!). The Atletik midfielder normally wouldn’t even be in the box for corners, he had been stationed on the edge of the penalty area but he had gambled once Odonelec had sprinted to retrieve the ball and the gamble paid off following Odonelec’s whipped ball in.

Zekic’s flick on made it tricky for the defenders as it took a bit of pace off the ball and they had all been running at full speed, the momentum changed and Fejzuli was the only one able to react to it by heading into the ground and past Handanovic. The roar of noise from the Mytanar fans was like a throwback to those tournaments of yesteryear when Hjik and Repin played and won the Cup of Harmony and immediately flares and smokebombs were set-off, hailing a return to winning at a tournament for Mytanija – the first one in a long time.

Mattijana didn’t have the time to find an equaliser and with the wind well and truly knocked out of their sails, they couldn’t create anything either as the Mytanars returned to their standard defensive shape. Vukovic tucked back in, Azanovic and Obadko went back to centre-back and Isaev returned to a fully-fledged right-back position. Stojkovic and Todorov sat in in front of the defence, with Fejzuli and Odonelec pressing everything and Zekic and Aleksic left on the halfway line to try and hold anything up that fell to them.

There would be no more chances anyway and the full-time whistle was celebrated raucously by the players on the pitch and the supporters in the stands. It had been a truly excellent second-half performance and a tactical manoeuvre that has to be commended from the Mytanar coaching staff.

Ratings.
    Starting XI.
    1. Savic – 6/10. A solid enough performance from the goalkeeper who did very little wrong for Struna’s goal. Made no high-profile errors and was a relatively calm presence for the defence during the fiercest moments of Mattijana’s sustained attacks.

    2. Feric – 4/10. The left-back found it difficult to deal with Struna’s speed and movement and was often found chasing her as she dribbled away, just too fast. Feric is known as a quick defender, too, so this was a slightly surprising problem.

    3. Azanovic – 6/10. The captain was as consistent as ever today, marshalled the defence well and was combative against Lekarisa and the substitute Weiss when necessary.

    4. Obadko – 5/10. Didn’t do anything wrong today particularly, but his lack of speed was occasionally demonstrated. Picked up a yellow card for a crunching tackle on Lekarisa.

    5. Isaev – 7/10. Isaev kept Velezia and Bisrali pretty quiet throughout the game and effortlessly slotted in as an auxiliary right-sided centre-back/inverted wing-back when Hjik and Repin decided to change things tactically. Isaev must be one of the most consistent performers with the national team. Genuinely cannot remember the last time he had a bad game.

    6. Fejzuli – 8/10. Man of the Match. Fejzuli had an enormous part to play in the winner, ghosting in at the back stick to score with a header – something the midfielder was unsure he had ever done before when asked about it post-match. Was a calm presence in the middle of the park against the Mattijana press and if Ocokoljic had managed a better pass to Aleksic in the first-half would likely have played a part in another goal.

    7. Todorov – 4/10. Often bypassed in the middle by the quick movement of the Mattijana midfielders and generally felt like it just wasn’t his day today. Even with Mytanija on-top in the second-half Todorov looked lethargic and misplaced a few easy passes.

    8. Elvahic – 5/10. Did okay, especially when Mattijana were attacking as his calm head allowed him to make a couple of useful interceptions. He wasn’t as useful in possession when Mattijana were closing everything down at high-speed and that led to his substitution.

    10. Odonelec – 8/10. Excellent when going forward, created a few half-chances and linked well with Vukovic once the full-back came on the field, scoring his goal as a result with a calm finish. Beginning to look a really important part of the team.

    9. Ocokoljic – 3/10. It’s not often that Jezdimir Ocokoljic is the worst player on the pitch for Mytanija but he couldn’t get into the game today. He was tightly marked and often the subject of some rough treatment from the Mattijana defenders. He’ll be back.

    11. Aleksic – 5/10. Couldn’t get too involved either, the majority of chances seemed to fall to our midfielders. Aleksic held the ball up well though and demonstrated exactly why he is known as a complete forward on these shores. Unlucky to pick up a yellow card for allegedly backing into Illicić.

    Substitutes.
    13. Vukovic – 8/10. Vukovic could put a lot of pressure on Feric for the starting job if he demonstrates this type of performance regularly. He showed his tactical versatility and although Struna didn’t give him too much to think about by actually going back and defending, he was the catalyst for the Mytanar team down that left-flank, creating the two-on-one that led to the equaliser and the tide of the game changing.

    19. Stojkovic – 7/10. He was exactly the tonic needed to give the Mytanar defenders another option in midfield. Elvahic had done a fairly good job defensively, but Stojkovic was more comfortable in possession and he stopped the flow of the Mattijana team by preventing them from winning the ball back as quickly. No slight on Elvahic who is normally good on the ball but Stojkovic improved the performance today and perhaps gave Hjik something to think about (what about a midfield trio of Fejzuli, Stojkovic and Elvahic in games where we’re going to get pressed in possession?).

    22. Zekic – 8/10. His best game for the national team in a long, long time. Which is saying something, because he was only on the pitch for around 13 minutes! He was a battering ram up-top for that period, using his size and strength to fend off defenders and his aerial threat was obvious to see. His headed flick-on led to the winner. Hopefully this performance gives him confidence for next time and he might start scoring for the Hoops.

NEXT UP:
Squornshelan Remnant States (90):
the Confederate side got a creditable 2-2 draw against Acronius in their group opener. Acronius of course being the same team that beat us fairly soundly twice during qualifying. A win for Mytanija would see the Hoops through to the knock-out rounds of the Cup of Harmony for the first time since the 59th edition when current assistant manager Lev Repin lifted the trophy as a player! Captain Arlo Damot scored a 70th minute equaliser in a tight game. It’s likely this game will be another hotly-contested tactical battle, with both sides notable for their defensive strategies and proficiency in executing them. It could easily be a case of which team blinks first – although following the clever tactical change today orchestrated by the Mytanar coaching team, perhaps an unexpected approach could be taken by the Hoops.

Non-Fiction: Escalation

The Truth News
Former Minister of Public Education Found Dead!

"Today is a day of shock, when Ian Wilson, the former Minister of Public Education who had his position be replaced by Miss Izzy Chesterton, was found dead this morning by several military soldiers, who reported his death to the Ministry. Izzy Chesterton was found this morning at 7 AM, when several soldiers noticed an unmarked and unregistered car that had been reported to have been there for several days. When officials searched the car, they found the body of Ian Wilson, who had been shot with what has been reported a whole clip of a pistol, which the corpse had been covered with a blue tarp. Government detectives have reason to believe that this death was caused as an assassination perpetrated by possibly an assassin. The motives currently seem to be imply that the culprit or culprits were of anti-fascism or anti-communism ideology, while being a far-leaning member of either part of the political spectrum."

"The Homeland Security branch of the Ministry of Security and Safety have declared that they were been making sure that "no witch hunt" occurs, due to the nature of the murder, comparing it to the terrorist attacks involving the Banija and Victory Square attacks. Around that time as the body was found, another body belonging to independent journalist Grant Dugdale was found in his own car, shot multiple times from presumably the same gun. Security footage has been currently pending, where information have been currently confidential. When Miss Izzy Chesterton was told of Wilson's demise, she expressed shock, as she explained that he was one of her closest, but long distance friends. "It's a horrible thing to hear the death of someone who you respected you for the things you did. His death is perhaps now one of the reasons I shall be as what many accepted him for during his time as Minister." Miss Izzy Chesterton is now leading a program for all educational facility in what she believes to be in the same vain as Wilson."

"When the Leader was informed about the death of both men, interviewers describe that he looked briefly confused, then showed some grief at the news. The Leader demanded that no questions will be made, due to the circumstances surrounding it. Several obituaries are to be made in the next issue of the Truth News, along with a vigil for Ian Wilson."

Dennis Aldridge was forced back into the interrogation room, where while several pages from the comic that he created under his trance were still being in the process of being translated for a meaning, it wasn't until after the death of two men was when two pages detailing their deaths were found. Of course, they wanted answers immediately. "How did you manage to draw the deaths of two men before they were killed?!" the interrogator demanded, where Dennis showed the look of complete fright at what he heard. "I don't know! My son drew the images first!"

"We don't care who drew them first! We need to know how the two of you managed to know that Ian Wilson and Grant Dugdale died!"
"I.....Do you think that me tracing over the images caused whatever I drew to become reality?"
"We can't guarantee it. However, we making sure you and your children are contained. If someone else knows about your creations, we know that there is some sort of link that they are using. If we can trace your link, under if it means be having your whole brain searched, then it's necessary."

Dennis had no other options. He didn't want what he created to continue to come true. He needed to do it for the safety of everyone. Even if it took some sacrifices.

DREAMPLANET TAKE THE WIN IN GOALFEST

Image

Luis Silva's hattrick sealed the game in the 78th minute.

If the last match as mundane, this one was insane as both teams wanted the win badly, throwing caution to the wind, and it had to be Luis Silva to seal the win for Dreamplanet, but before a consolation goal for Eastfield Lodge.

Os Tricores opened the scoring early via Aaron Hungar's strike from close range, but Raquel Accardi got the equaliser from a set piece, and then Luis Silva got his first of the tournament in the 23rd minute, but once again Raquel Accardi equalised in the 41st minute, this time from a tap-in after a pass from Werdickley Safadão, and it was 2-2 at the break.

Dreamplanet showed off their attacking strength, being the leaders twice and playing some great, quick attacking football which left Eastfield Lodge wondering what happened, but so could they, equalising soon enough to halt a steaming Dreamplanet.

Image

The second half was where the caution was really thrown to the wind, with Luis Silva scored his second of the game in the 56th minute, after being passed the ball from a corner he decided to hit it, which went flying past Korbin Harvey and established the Dreamplanetian lead once more. But of course, Eastfield Lodge were not to be denied as Jennifer Farrow heading a corner past Filipe Vaz in the 64th minute, equalising for Eastfield Lodge for the 3rd time.

However it would be Antonio Luis to get the lead back for Dreamplanet soon after being brought back on, the goal was arguably a fluke, as Paulo Figueiredo tried to strike the ball, however it was mishit and went directly to the path of Antonio Luis, who only had to stick his foot out in a mostly-open goal to get the goal. Luis Silva, the captain and Dreamplanetian hero sealed the win for Dreamplanet after scoring a free kick in the 78th minute, with Tajo Carr-Ponce getting the yellow card for bringing Aaron Hungar down near the box. That seemed to be it, not much time left and Dreamplanet were leading 5-3, but Eastfield Lodge would get a consolation goal of their own via Werdickley Safadão, who volleyed it in from a cross, but that was it and Dreamplanet got their first win of the campaign against a hardworking Eastfield Lodge.

Dreamplanet will play against South Toronto in their last group game, and after that showing, the team is confident and will only be needing a draw to go through, Dreamplanet are group leaders as they are 1 point ahead of South Toronto, who will be hoping that if they can't beat Dreamplanet that Polkopia can hold Eastfield Lodge at bay, but one thing is for certain, this group isn't over yet and Os Tricores will need to keep it up to ensure a Round of 16 appearance.

Eastfield Lodge 4 - 5 Dreamplanet
(Jennifer Farrow 64', Raquel Accardi 11', 41', Werdickley Safadão 81' - 9' Aaron Hungar, 23', 56', 78' Luis Silva, 71' Antonio Luis)

“Are you f’ing kidding me!”

With each syllable, Ervin Derica raised his voice and by the last one, he stood leaned over the table with his broad shoulders supported by pillars of arms. No wonder young goalies stood in awe whenever he raised his voice.

“I think it’s…”
“Have you seen a different game yesterday?”

Despite his physical appearance and loud baritone, Ervin wasn’t one to speak disrespectful, especially not against his boss. Dusan Azzini sensed that his statement had triggered quite a few things and looked aside, trying to get some sort of support from a different side of the table. I myself must have looked like an idiot, still trying to process what was said with my mouth half open – as if the thoughts used up all energy resources which I had previously reserved for chewing my sandwich. With a natural authority in his voice, John Gazulli took over. The doc, who usually looked strangely casual with a baseball cap hiding his growing bold spot was the senior of the four of us.

“You should consider very well what you’re deciding here, Dusan. This will decide about a lot.”

The short silence he left to underline his words was quickly cut short by Ervin.

“He pushed the team to a legendary victory, he’s a hattrick hero!”
“But he was a disappointment after the match!”

Azzini stood up now as well, yelling, nearly shrieking. His face was sweaty, with drops of hear sticking to his temples. In all fairness, he looked worn out and tired, my old friend. After sharing the dressing room for the better part of a decade, he had called me on the day I hung up my boots as well. He wanted an assistant he could trust and I… Well, I fitted the bill. Maybe it was over my skills – at least, that’s what the pride part of me told – but more likely because I could handle his tendency to make his decisions in silence, rarely showing what was going on behind the curtains of those bushy eyebrows.

“Of course he did well on the pitch,” a sighing Azzini admitted, “when you score three in such a tense confrontation… But it does not excuse his statements afterwards. He was disrespectful towards the team and doubted my authority – I cannot accept that.”

Ervin waved his hands in confusion.

“That rush, before tucking it away past Marramzi! That sneaky header, tricking Nahmoud with the little sidestep! That kind of quality is our best chance to grab a point against Siovanija. And against Teusland! Who knows how far it can go…”
“Ervin, I know…”
“… and the press knows it.”

It was a sore spot that the goalkeeper coach touched here. Bit by bit, they had grown weary of their national manager, who left little room for interviews and only posed some platitudes on request. They had hoped that the astonishing performance against Adab would relieve the pressure but all focus had been on Altacci.

Gianni Altacci, that magnificent bastard. In between dominating the field, he had celebrated his three goals like he was bloody royalty. That amount of arrogance could be set aside as a vice of the motivated. But after the last whistle, he had gone eye-to-eye with the press and made some strong remarks. That he was the best striker of the nation, the others had failed without him. And, even more pressing, that Azzini was a fool for ruling him out so far and that he had proven it.

Worst of all, the journalists loved it. In fact, they loved everything about it, from his lack of internal filter all the way up to his sticky accent and his swagger.

“I’m not going to let the press select my eleven,” Azzini spoke. He sounded beaten.

“It’s not just about that,” John added, “what do the guys think? After the game, the atmosphere was certainly upbeat. Suddenly, they felt like they weren’t here to complete the numbers, as a sideshow staged in the smallest stadium around. There, in Northbury, we can write history… And if they believe in it, Altacci plays no small part in that.”

The manager scratched his head.

“They should be as disgusted by his words afterwards.”
“Can’t we check up with them,” Ervin tried, “They deserve to be…”
“No. It’s the staff who makes the decisions,” Azzini cut him short.

The mumbled “not even the captain” wasn’t met by anything more than a vague glance. It didn’t take too much to realise that Azzini wasn’t too eager to consult Roberto Moscardelli, the goalie and veteran with a major influence in the group. Moreover, he was a teammate of Altacci on the daily and simply consulting him about a possible ejection from the starting eleven could spark something Azzini didn’t want right now. Once again, the discussion died down.

“What about you, Jaka?”

Three heads turned towards me. As the assistant, I rarely had the final call. Somehow, I was a little touched that Dusan turned to me at a time like this – kicking off Altacci could not just decide the outcome of the tournament, but also of our collective future with the national team. The mere fact that he had put this up during our daily teamtalk and not just simply imposed on the group during the tactical discussion hinted towards a hesitation of his side. He wanted to go through with this despite knowing it was a bad idea – he just wanted to figure out how bad an idea it was.

With that in mind, I weighed my words. I understood his point fairly well – if he let this slip without anything, he would lose his grip over the group. But Altacci had not just won the game for us – he had earned a talismanic aura over him. They would face a Siovanija & Teusland which was pestered by doubts after seven consecutive games. The Goldhorns struggled to showcase all the strength displayed during the qualifiers and star striker Krasimir Kynev hadn’t been decisive yet. This was a unique opportunity and we all knew it.

“In all fairness, Dusan… Which game do we want to win? I want to beat Siovanija…”

We all looked upon Azzini, in silence. Somehow, the three of us hoped it would break the resistance – at least he had given it up vocally. The silence made our ears whistle, thank god for Ervin.

“Well, we want to beat Teusland as well, of course,” he grinned.

It was an interesting matchday 2 matchup for the Purple Knights as they faced off against perhaps the weakest squad in their group in Saint Emelie. The fans would have expected a thrashing, but the Purple Knights seemed rather to fail to know this. With the three new starters not exactly up to speed, besides the oft used Alson Figeuroa it seemed like it could be a long day for the Purple Knights. Longtime Captain Miles Snavely was once again ruled out with flu symptoms meaning many were afraid that after the ninety minutes the Knights would once again fail to have much of a strong showing in the attack.

The most interesting bit of play involved the first appearance of two young national team midfielders in Shiloh Morgenstern and Nycolas Jackson. The two teenagers came on at halftime and while it was an unexpected change they really added much to the game even if it was only a youthful exuberance. The attack seemed to gain some momentum though near the end of the game with the game still knotted 0-0 like the first game. It was then that Aleksandr Denisov and Abriel Torres finally seemed to get an understanding as the two wingers were attempting a two speed forward attack, and ultimately Torres landed a through ball in the back of the net with an 81st minute shot.

East Belzaria With Incredible Draw

Postby East Belzaria » Tue Oct 09, 2018 2:13 pm

Coming into their 2nd game of the Cup Of Harmony, East Belzaria needed to avoid defeat in order to stay in the tournament. Facing the 3rd highest ranked team in the championship, East Belzaria held on for an incredible 0-0 draw. It was a very defensive game from an East Belzarian standpoint, but once again it was Lorn Monte who missed a chance to score a historic goal. After recieving a pass from Shad Radclyffe, he took a volley which hit the underside of the crossbar before bouncing out.

"We played well." says Lorn Monte "Our chances were limited, and it was just unlucky." David Madridson looked excited when interviewed. "We made a major impact today in the sporting history of East Belzaria. I'm happy to see that we're showing the same spirit that we had during the qualifiers."

Given the way the group is shaping up, East Belzaria will need a 2 goal victory over Krytenia combined with a Qusmo win over Juvencus. "I think we can do it." says David Madridson "Krytenia are already eliminated, and they'll be looking to capitalize in their last game, but I think if we play aggressive, we'll get the goals we need. It's also down to Qusmo who needs to do us a favor."

The Murder, Ch. III —

It seemed as if, from the second Detective Kline stepped off the aircraft and on to the loading ramp to the terminal, all anybody in Fedala could talk about was the match against Jerusalem and the upcoming one against Main Nation Ministry. The imperial football team had a chance of qualifying for the knock-out stages of the Cup of Harmony, but the loss to Jerusalem by two goals to one had put those plans in a straightjacket. The team's fate, and the possibility of their first knock-out stage performance in almost a decade, was hanging from the ledge with a hand that barely had two fingers still holding on for safety.

Kline didn't really care for it. But Mike picked up a sports paper on their way out and read it on the taxi to the hotel. The department was kind enough to cover the expense, but the captain was sure to set a time schedule. They had four days to do what they needed, and then they were to report back to her...with results to show for it.

"Listen to this," said Mike, who was reading the paper. "'Despite the narrow loss to Jerusalem, the imperial football team has shown defensive prowess, a capacity to defend, and a strong enough midfield to recover the ball and quickly transition to the offensive. However, the loss of Lakén Yori has left the team without a talented, dynamic midfield to alternate with the more defensive Kordob Verón.' Looks like our victim was pretty good at his job." He moved on to another page. "Hm, he was part of the World Cup team. Did you watch the games? They were pretty good."

Kline gave him a disappointed look. Then his eyes tightened. "The last World Cup?"

"Yep," said Mike. His eyes tightened too, then. "Why would a successful footballer playing for the national team quit in the middle of qualifications and demand a transfer to Paquat IFK?"

"Paquat isn't too bad of a team, is it?" Kline received a flat stare in return. He wasn't quite sure Mike Granjer made it to be a detective, nor how he managed to be partnered with him. It was just one of those odd things of life. But, the kid couldn't have been more different than him.

"The imperial league isn't what it was, you know," Mike answered. "Players, especially players who, like him, are talented, have exposure and produce results are looking for a big international contract."

The taxi took them down a broad boulevard that traveled through the hills of Eleundri, a northeastern suburb that formed part of the great capital city of Fedala in all but administrative name. Tall skyscrapers reached towards the clouds, each more extravagant than the next as if their owners were competing with each other for the claim to the best tower. Prominent logos and names made sure to tell all who they belonged to. The Golden Throne's flag flew atop all of them. At street level, especially along the boulevard, there were smaller buildings of three or four stories with beautiful façades and elaborate decorations. Kline looked at the other cars. There were so many. And they were all autonomous.

"So what?" he asked. "Paquat IFK offer him the contract he wants. He forces his transfer and moves. What's strange about that? Still, I suppose it doesn't explain why he dropped the national gig."

Mike shook his head. "Big international contract. Paquat IFK is not 'big.' Hell, man, it's not even one of the top teams in our league. When good players think of big teams, good players here at least, they're looking for a breakthrough opportunity in a top league. I mean, look around you. Look at the wealth, the people, the money. Any player would rather be here than Paquat."

"Fair enough. So why force your way out of your team here, drop out of the national squad, and go play for a team as bad as Paquat's?" Kline was looking out the window, the buildings bleeding into each other. He looked back at Mike to see him furiously reading the paper. "What is it?" he asked.

Still looking down at the paper, "Check this. 'Yori's success was held back by a divided appetite, one that could not choose between football and hedonism. Expected to sign a larger contract, Yori's negotiations were interrupted by accusations of using his security team to physically abuse a young woman who had been trying to speak with him. This perhaps explains his mysterious move to Paquat IFK.'"

"Our victim was running from something, then," said Kline. "Do some research and figure out who the accuser was. We should talk to her while we're here."

"On it, Jack," Mike replied. He brought out his tablet.

The car took an off-ramp to a gargantuan highway that tunneled through the earth like the great old Berliston motorways, which were now little more than cracked, decrepit concrete and crawling vines. These were alive and vibrant, colors vibrating in his eyes. He had never seen anything like this before. It curved only slowly and ramps branched in and out, like a river and its many tributaries. They finally took one of these to reappear in the surface, along another broad, boulevard. This was the Kapes Viksedén, where emperors held their Triumphs. Beautiful buildings with intricate trimmings, bronze and golden statues, columns, and marble pedestals flanked them. They turned off the kapes to a street by no means very much smaller, then turned again, driving for some time before they stopped in front of an apartment building that was no less stunning than the ones they had passed by before.

"Lolita Arakna," Mike said, suddenly.

Kline turned his head. "What?"

"Lolita Arkna," he repeated. "That's the name of the girl, the accuser."

"Send her name to our resource here. Let's see if he can track her down." He stepped out of the vehicle when the doors opened. "Put that away, we're here."

They walked up to the building's front door, standing around for some time until somebody finally came out from the inside. Kline caught the door before it closed. He found the elevators, bringing Mike with him, and pressed the floor for Bernie Va'anderbor's flat. Their resource had found the man. The man said it had been one of his easiest jobs. The doors open.

The two of them turned right, walking down the tiled hallway. "Weird thing," said Mike.

"What's that?" asked Kline.

His partner turned to look at him. He was holding his tablet. "He says that if Lolita Arakna is a person, then she's off the grid or it's a fake identity. It'll take him more time to dig into it."

They came up to the door and knocked. There was no answer. Kline knocked again. Then Mike. Then Kline again. They waited there for almost five minutes. Nothing. The detective turned to his partner and nodded. "This is the Golden Throne, right? How fast do you think security will get here if we kick down this door?"

Mike shrugged. "Pretty fast."

A door further down the hall opened. A woman poked out her head and looked at them. "Are you looking for Bernie," she asked, in Díenstadi.

Kline looked at Mike. The kid knew the language. "See if she knows something, Detective Granjer," he said in common.

"That we are," said the younger detective, in the woman's tongue. "Do you know him?"

She was younger. Perhaps in her early thirties, if that old. She must have done well professionally or lived with someone who did, to afford a place like this. Even rent. "Not very well," she said. "But I would always see him come home. He hasn't been around since she came. His new girlfriend."

"New girlfriend?" Mike stepped toward her. "Remember her name?"

She shook her head. "No, I didn't know her. Although," she frowned, "she reminds me of that woman in the news."

A man's voice came from inside. She turned and then looked back at Mike. "That's all I know," she said. The door closed.

"She said he hasn't come back in some time, since his new girlfriend appears. Doesn't remember her name, but said something about a woman in the news," Mike told the senior detective, who was looking on but hadn't understood a word of the conversation. "So, what now?"

"Let's give local security services a visit." They headed back to the elevators. A taxi came to wait for them outside.

Cup of Harmony - Match Day 2
Starksville, Cassadaigua

Match Preview

Beepee vs. Kelssek

Beepee must do what they haven't done in five previous matches at the Cup of Harmony and win to keep alive their slim hopes of progression to the next round.

Playing at the 65,000 seater Starksville Stadium, Cassadaigua, Beepee will likely feel right at home.

Previous Matches
Beepee 0 - 2 Tinhampton
Beepee 1 - 1 Freeport

With the draw against Freeport, a win could see Beepee leapfrog Kelssek into second place. Beepee will seek take positives from the match despite the draw.

Of significant concern for Beepee will be the underperformance of Carlo Bannan, who once again failed to deliver anything near an average performance. Local media has been calling on Coleen Yu to drop Bannan for the final group game.

Current Stats:

Beepeean Occasional News Corportation Sports Editor Vonda Race said of the forthcoming match:

"Beepee were lucky in their last match to salvage a draw. This match is likely to be a fiery affair. Recent comments by the Kelssek tabloid "People's World News Daily", will have fired up Coleen Yu and her squad. I expect several confronting challenges from both sides in this do-or-die match.

The comments by the "People's World News Daily" were even raised at the Beepeean Parliament. Beepee Prime Minister Stan Bach issuing the following statement:

"Good Beepeeps,

The talentless hacks at the Kelssek People's World News Daily, have besmirched the good name of Beepee.

Beepee bid for sponsorship at the World Cup through the appropriate means, and we're chosen by the organising committee in line with the proper procedures. We are proud of being part of the global sporting multiverse and are pleased to promote healthy living and competitive sport together.

However, we do not hold the good nation and peoples of Kelssek in the same contempt as this odious 'fake news' publication, and in order to show that the Beepeean way of life is supportive all of types of Government and nations, the Beepeean government intends to provide the Kelssek nation with over 300 million tonnes of mixed fruits, whether they like it or not. That should soften the blow when the Bulldozers bulldoze those blasted beavers!".

Coleen Yu held a press conference this morning where she discussed the match against Tinhampton and looked forward to the remaining games.

Press Conference

Beepee drew with Freeport in the last match. What were your thoughts on the match?

It wasn't a bad performance, although I feel the team underperformed slighlty. We knew it was going to be a tense match as a loss could have seen us out of the competition. The results sets up an interesting clash against Kelssek

Recent comments from the Kelssek media have suggested Beepee that our teams gonads may be under threat. What are your thoughts on that?

That it's just the media whipping things up into a frenzy. But I admit it has added a little spice to the fixture and I can tell there's a buzz about the team. The boys are all up to show the best that Beepee can deliver.

You previously said Kelssek were a fantastic team, has their loss to Tinhampton changed your mind?

Kelssek are a fantastic team. Their loss to Tinhampton doesn't change my opinion in the slightest.

Defender Anders Bucke was injured for the last match, how is doing?

The injury wasn't too serious, but we'll continue to protect Anders. He will likely be on the bench for this important match.

Carlo Bannan has copped some stick for his poor performances recently. Will he play in the Kelssek match?

Come on! You don't expect me to criticise my players openly in a press conference, do you?.

Following the press conference Coleen Yu released the Beepeean staring line up for the match. Sticking to the four-four-two formation.

Liam Chang

The 23 year old who plies his trade for Mela Leuca in the Beepeean Legaue is a nimble and agile player. Chang however enjoys shooting on sight at the goal which often means shooting from a long way out, as a result his accuracy statistics often suffer.

Beepeean bookmakers are again offering odds which favour Beepee's opposition. The Beavers are widely expected to beat the Bulldozers .

Shortly after the game with East Belzaria

August was absolutely furious after the team's mediocre performance with East Belzaria. The old man was jumping up down and had turned red, he was shotuign different curse words behind closed doors to show respect to his players, the only problem was that they could still hear him. The session lasted 10 minutes, then he came out, seemingly relaxed, still as red as an aubergine. Pau approached him with some water and patted his back, then August pushed him back, and with a determined look at his face, he said with a calm tone.

"What was that Squadra Nazionale di Juvencus? Tying a game against newcomers? Are you serious? This is time for a real talk lads. If you expect to do anything in the Cup of Harmony, or any tournament in general, you gotta step your game up. Sometimes in order to penetrate through a team, you need to shoot from far away, it's not always crosses hoping it gets through the damn bus teams put on us or just through-balls hoping someone runs fast enough. We can not be as relaxed all 90 minutes of the game if we keep running around and missing chances like that. What I want you to do, starting next game, is to capitalise on these long distance shots, instead of waiting for an opening, it's just too time-wasting and not only that, we could be scoring more goals than usual. Next game is against Qusmo lads, it's either you step it up or lose it all and expect a run in the Independents Cup, your choice."

The look at the players' face as a whole could be described as moody and focused to what the coach was saying. Nobody dared talking back to him, like they usually do, all they could do was just nod in agreement and start working on their next game against Qusmo, a do-or-die matchup and with hopes up, the Juven team could grab a victory and secure a qualification to the elimination stages of the tournament, thus getting a step closer to lifting the Cup of Harmony trophy once more.

Three Things
Win or Go Home
Salwan Mynhier

After a second draw, the Black-and-Reds now find themselves in a very simple situation. With two points, two goals for, and two goals against after two matches, they currently sit third in Group C, behind Acronius on goals scored. If both day three matches end in draws, and we outscore Acronius by two, we would advance in second place, but the chances of that are negligible at best, leaving us with only one option: win. A victory against Mattijana will send the Black-and-Reds to the second round regardless of what transpires between Mytanija and Acronius.

A Hard-Fought Draw in Ponyville
As one would have expected from a meeting of two sides known for careful, tactical defensive play, the Matchday Two meeting between the Confederacy and Mytanija at Elements Stadium in Ponyville was one in which scoring chances were hard to come by. Lopal Daror signaled his intentions with his starting lineup, sending out Zemen Ystrad instead of Ctibor Tkermec. Clearly the plan was to play physical defense against the Mytanar forwards, potentially a strong tactic with the more imposing Alen Zekic out of favor with management and unlikely to start.

Early in the match, this approach seemed to be effective, as Ocokoljic and Aleksic were generally unable to create much space, and were fairly quickly dispossessed in the event they did receive a pass. At the other end of the pitch, however, it was much the same story. Jzvanic, facing off against Azanovic and Obadko, was largely unable to find much space to work with, while Feric and Isaev were doing solid work keeping Vladcik and Zonde contained to the flanks. Most of the Black-and-Reds early shots, therefore, came from Damot and Strepol firing from distance, and of the few that were on target, only one presented Savic with any real challenge. A fifteenth minute rocket from Strepol came straight at the Mytanar keeper, but had such force behind it that Savic spilled the ball to his feet. Azanovic did a solid job of boxing out Jzvanic, however, and Savic was able to fall on the rebound without too much difficulty.

While Damot and Strepol's sniping gave the Confederacy the early advantage in shot attempts, possession was much more evenly divided, as the readiness of both defenses to tackle, and the skill with which they did so meant that neither side could sustain long periods of offense. Rather, the game was very back and forth, and often bogged down in midfield. One result of this was that Strepol picked up a yellow card late in the first half after an overenthusiastic challenge on Todorov, barging strongly into him from the side. While the Mytanar midfielder was sent sprawling by the force of the challenge, he fortunately did not require any medical attention, and was able to continue play without any apparent ill effects.

As both teams came out in the second half, the emotion seemed distinctly ratcheted up, as both teams perhaps were feeling the importance of earning full points. Mytanija of course, would clinch advancement with a win, while the Confederacy were poised to potentially move to first place in the group if they could take three points. Whatever the reason, the early parts of the second half were spirited to say the least and before ten minutes had passed, two more yellow cards had been given out, first to Obadko for shoving Jzvanic over as he turned to shield the ball, and second to Ystrad, for a sliding challenge that missed the ball entirely, but did not miss Odonolec's ankles. The fact that Ystrad kept his spikes down was likely all that saved him from a straight red, not that this argument would get you very far with the Mytanar fans in attendance, who were incensed.

Another nervous moment for the Confederate fans came in the 60th minute. Strepol dragged down Odonolec about ten yards outside the box, and received a brief lecture from the referee. He decided to keep his cards in his pocket for the moment though, and Fejzuli's shot was held by Munib after he placed it too close to the Confederate keeper. Lopal Daror had seen enough, however, and took Strepol off a few minutes later, sending Shrike Hagaz on in his place. This substitution seemed to calm things down a bit on both sides (there's something that's never been said about bringing Hagaz on before). The Chalesm midfielder continued to act as an enforcer, harrying the Hoops any time they tried to settle into midfielder possession, but with greater restraint that Strepol had shown.

In the 76th, with neither side looking particularly threatening, Daror took the initiative and changed his tactics. In one move, he brought Ystrad off, ensuring that the defender would not earn a second yellow and a suspension, and brought a second striker on in Zoban Ajao. Ajao slotted in over the top, with Jzvanic sliding slightly back to a center forward position. This new alignment very nearly broke the game open, as only two minutes later the Black-and-Reds began a counter with equal numbers to the Mytanar defense. Elvahic brought down Damot with a lunging tackle before his could play the ball forward, however, picking up the game's fourth yellow card, but likely preventing a scoring opportunity.

Shortly thereafter, Hijk made his own attacking switch, bringing Aleksic off for Zekic. While Zekic has been sputtering for the national team of late, perhaps Hijk believe his greater size and physicality would allow him to hold up play and create space for Ocokoljic and Odonolec. Unfortunately for Zekic, he proved no more effective than any other striker in the match, a result which may mean the end of his time with the Hoops.

A last bit of drama occurred near the beginning of stoppage time, as Savic deflected a long-range shot from Damot high, conceding a corner. As Damot's corner curled into the area, Jzvanic went down with Obadko on top of him, and players from both side surrounded the referee, who gestured immediately for video review. When the dust had settled, Jzvanic was given a yellow card, as it was clear on the video that he had grabbed a double fistful of Obadko's jersey before flopping over, dragging the Hoops defender down with him. While the referee allowed a minute and a half more added time than had originally been indicated to make up for this delay, it proved to not be enough for either team to create another opportunity, and the match ended with the score still level at zero.

And so the stage is set for the final match of the group stage. Mytanija will meet Acronius at Sky High Colosseum in Cloudsdale. The winner of that match will advance to the second round as group winner, a draw would make things a bit more complicated. The Confederacy will play Mattijana back at Manehattan Industrial Park. The winner of that match would advance to the second round, possibly as group winner, but more likely as runner-up. A draw would certainly eliminate Mattijana, and likely not do us any good either. Essentially, Mytanija simply need to gain a point to advance, while all three other teams must win to be sure of continuing their tournament.

Transfer Prospects: Under the Algolian Sun
Home to some of the Confederacy's oldest clubs, Algolia sent eleven players from four different teams to the qualifying tournament. While most of those players saw limited action, there were three in particular who played frequently and did quite well. While a few of these players might be available for transfers, most of these teams will be trying to build on last season and will be eyeing higher finishes by retaining their stars and adding complementary players.

Algolia Athletic Club
Algolia's three national team callups represent the future of the team. With such promise for the future combined with their fourth place league finish, they will almost certainly look to add to their roster, rather than subtract, whether they will do so domestically or look abroad remains to be seen, but they will likely be among the favorites to win the league next year.
Kinner Mustahil - GK - 25
Playing two and a half matches, Mustahil allowed goals in only one of them, and that was against Group 15 winners, Pasarga. He should be the anchor for Algolia next year as they try to improve on their fourth place finish, and early exit from the Confederacy Cup. The bid necessary to pry a goaltender entering his prime away from a league contender would be prohibitive to say the least.
Janar Delu - RB - 23
Delu saw almost no time while Ulcviecel was available, but was solid enough to be the regular choice ahead of Maryl Antrobus in Ulcviecel's absence. While he lacks Ulcviecel's spectacular turn of speed, Delu is a dependable right back, and was a significant factor in Algolia's excellent defense and fourth place finish. It would be mildly surprising to see him leave Algolia, however, as they seem more likely to be buyers this year, looking for a new addition to make a run at the championship next year.
Danin Stolp - CM - 20
Stolp had little impact during qualifying, earning only a single cap, and is unlikely to be available for transfer, given his youth. It seems highly unlikely that any team would be willing to make an offer high enough to pry the promising youngster away from Algolia.

Athletic Club of Damogran
AC Damogran are an interesting case. They had an absolutely dominant season, winning League 2 by 8 points, and finishing 24 points ahead of third place with 100 points from 48 matches. All that is in the past now, however, and they must face the challenging transition to League 1. If they can keep their team together they look like a team that could finish around the middle of the table, but fending off transfer bids and rich contract offers from larger clubs will be challenging.
Slater Jant - GK - 25
Jant played only two matches in qualifying, but looked very capable in both, allowing only a pair of goals. His presence behind the defense was vitally important for Athletic, so it will take a very significant bid to convince them to part with him. While it's certainly possible that one of the big Brantid clubs like MSC or Brantisvogan will swoop in and blow their whole budget to pick him up, it seems more likely that he will either stay, or go abroad for a larger fee than any Confederate club can manage.
Vrenz Tambura - RM - 22
Tambura was the star of Athletic's attack, and while his success on the international stage was more modest, he has still managed a goal and three assists in 11 total appearances. He will definitely be a player targeted by other clubs, both foreign and domestic, but even if they feel they won't be able to keep him permanently, Athletic might be wiser to wait a year or two, when he will likely net them a much higher fee.

Damogran Football Club
Damogran finished a disappointing seventh, largely due to deficiencies in defense. Their attack was spearheaded by three players who saw playing time with the Black-and-Reds. While they might consider selling one of those three to help finance purchasing a defense, overall Damogran are definitely buyers, as they are probably the richest club outside of Megabrantis.
Eyob Zonde - RM - 27
Of the players on my list today, Zonde will undoubtedly be the one the most in demand by foreign clubs, though he may not actually be available. With four goals and two assists in 16 appearances, Zonde played his way into a starting role and looks to be an important part of Damogran's attack again next year. While they could afford his loss and probably still secure advancement to the new SuperLeague with the presence of Dolnight and Gryspos letting him go would be a concession that they will probably not compete for the championship. The fee necessary to acquire him would help them finance a rebuild of their defense, however.
Ramaz Dolnight - CM - 25
Dolnight made three appearances and managed to contribute one assist during qualifying, and is unlikely to be transferred. He has the misfortune to be behind a longish list of very talented center midfielders on the national team. With Damogran, he is an important part of the attack as a distributor of the ball.
Hakan Gryspos - ST - 24
Gryspos was unimpressive in the 45 minutes he played during qualifying, and seems to be out of favor with Lopal Daror, who did not elect to use him again for the remainder of qualifying. The buyers market will probably not be high on him as a result, and Damogran should keep him around, as his service for the club was more than adequate.

Jaglan Royal Football Club
Royals came into the inaugural SCFA season with championship aspirations, but found themselves in ninth at the end of the year after struggling to score goals in crucial moments. Their two national team players were both from the back line, and played well, though not outstandingly so. Their finances are fairly comfortable, and I would expect them to retain both of these players while looking for a dynamic midfielder to rejuvenate their attack.
Rudi Dalso - CB - 23
Dalso played well enough in his two appearances, and his emergence was a bright spot in what was a very disappointing season overall for Jaglan. If Jaglan decided to go all out on the attack, Dalso would probably draw a pretty high fee this year, but in my book it wouldn't be enough to justify creating a hole in the middle of the back four.
Koit Suharto - LB - 28
Suharto was a strong performer in six appearances in relief of Geladi and Dzarkhin. He is a veteran presence at left back, and captain of the team for Royals. His job would be made much easier by some addition in midfield, allowing him to do a little less attacking creation.

Yeah, Yeah I know
That wasn't three things, it was only two. What you gonna do about it?

A Dance with Football
A look into the lives of the people involved in Adabian football and those associated with them

Chapter 12: The Agreement

Two weeks before the Cup of Harmony starts
Tayip's Diner, Adab City

"Look, as they say, let's just cut to the chase," Inimabakesh Thulus, assistant manager of the Adabian national team, said as he assumed his seat. "You know why you called me here. I know why I'm here."

In front of him, Saad Kaykali and Naram-Sin Araqasdah, President of the Adab Football Association, studied him with dead cold eyes, though tinged with a little sorrow. But this was no time for sorrow and making apologies; this was the time for professionalism. The decision had been taken, and though it was a hard one, they knew they had to follow through with the decision, lest Adabian football once again become the pariah of the world.

Meanwhile, just a few feet away, the footsteps of the waiters delivering food were drowned out by the cheers and applauses directed at the band, which had just concluded their rendition of Van Halen's "Why Can't This Be Love". "That band is pretty good, I'll give them that," Inimabakesh continued. Saad waved at the nearest waiter, who - apparently having noticed the third guest - was soon rushing to the table with the menu. But Inimabakesh gently pushed the menu away. "I think I'll just have a nice glass of Turkish tea, like these two gentlemen here," he said, smiling at the waiter and softly waving him away with his hand before turning to Saad and Naram-Sin. "Let's get down to business. I know I acted in the heat of the moment. I will not deny it. The sooner we get done with this, the better."

But when exactly did Inimabakesh act in the heat of the moment? You, the reader, might of course remember the recently-concluded World Cup 81 qualifiers, in which the Adabian national team made its comeback after a ten-year suspension. Though they did not qualify, the team performed above and beyond all expectations, placing third in their group behind World Cup giants Starblaydia and Audioslavia. Yet their achievement would, for now at least, be tarred by the assistant manager's actions during their first match against Starblaydia. With Saad unavailable due to "family business," Inimabakesh found himself temporarily assuming the full extent of managerial duties. Helping Saad lead the overachieving, but young and sometimes hotheaded team, was already quite stressful in itself - though they were careful not to show this to the public - and once Inimabakesh found himself guiding the ship alone, the pressure proved too much for him.

Perhaps playing on home soil provided Inimabakesh with the comfort he needed to unleash his words. He criticized the traditional Starblaydi war dance, which they performed before every match, nearly got into a scuffle with the Starblaydi assistant manager, dubbed the Starblaydi players "incompetents," and - after a second-half Starblaydi goal pretty much confirmed their victory over the hosts - finally was expelled to the stands after criticizing the referee as a "sorry blot on the game." His actions became the subject of much controversy in the country; while many supported him and decried the Starblaydis for everything from their attitude to their playing style, many more condemned him as a blot on Adabian football and called for him to be sacked, if not banned from football.

A ban would be particularly painful for Inimabakesh, depriving him of both his job and his main passion. He had been imprisoned for some years as a result of "The Purge" of Adabian football and was going to college for the first time in his life - hoping to get a law degree - and working part-time as a barista when Saad invited him to become assistant manager, an offer which he promptly jumped at, such was his devotion to football. If he were banned, what would he do? Go back to college and that old cafe again?

"I will not pretend that what you did is nothing more than a silly mistake, Ini," Saad said, glancing at the direction of the band as they took requests for their next song. Beside him, Naram-Sin maintained his silence, calmly looking at Inimabakesh. "I've known you for years, many years, and even by your standards this is out of order. I mean, I know you have your... hotheaded moments, but I've never heard you insulting the opposing players, the opposing staff, or even their culture. And the fact that you did it in an international match, at home, in our stadium, it was very embarrassing and it really put a dent on our image. What will people say about us? That we are cheaters, sore losers, bigots? Hell, what are they saying about us now?"

The band hadn't yet played their next song; apparently there was a dispute in the audience over which song they should play next, with two or three songs finding much support in particular, if the constant shouts of their names were anything to go by. "I was only gone for a while, Ini," Saad continued, laying his arm on the table and putting his head on his hand, his voice filling with exasperation. "I was dealing with a bit of family business, my daughter, my relatives, and all that, and suddenly I heard that my assistant manager had pretty much insulted the entirety of the opposing team and their staff and their war dance or whatever and got kicked off to the stands for that. In our own stadium. I don't know if it's better that it happened in our own stadium instead of at the Stadii Di Bradini, but you know as well as everyone else that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated and certainly won't go unpunished. You're a smart man and a great man, Ini. I'm sure you know this."

Inimabakesh did not raise a word against his friend, instead nodding slightly, staring at him with a stony face. There was nothing wrong in what Saad had just said, and he knew it. The manager's words had been rising with every word, threatening to ruin whatever privacy was there in their meeting. "You better tone it down a bit, Saad," Naram-Sin said, having noticed it. "You don't want to appear in the papers tomorrow for ranting in a restaurant, do you?"

Saad nodded, then turned to the band, which still hadn't played whatever the audience wanted them to play. A waiter approached their table with Inimabakesh's order, the same one who had delivered the menu only to be gently shooed away. As he laid the glass of Turkish tea before Inimabakesh, Saad leaned over and whispered to him, pointing at the band's direction, "...the hard rocking version, not the bluesier one that they did earlier five or six years before. The hard rocking one, alright? Don't tell them I was the one who requested it, just say that someone wants to hear the song." The waiter dutifully scurried away, and Saad turned once again to the men on his table.

"Let me guess, The Lonely Camels?" Inimabakesh chimed in. The Lonely Camels was an Adabian rock band popular some thirty to forty years ago, and Saad attended their concerts a few times during their heyday.

"Whitesnake, 'Here I Go Again,'" Saad revealed, beaming. "What, I like that song, and they're playing songs from that time, so I figure they probably know the song."

"But I thought you weren't into hair metal."

"Generally, yes, but I've made an exception for this one. David Coverdale is the man."

The waiter had whispered Saad's suggestion to the singer, and thankfully the band was receptive; they knew the song after all. The audience, too, for when the singer finally announced and began playing the song the entire place seemed to erupt in cheers. It was a relief for Saad; the song was loud enough to prevent anyone else in the restaurant from hearing their conversation, and it was also one that he genuinely enjoyed.

"So, about that," he continued, his voice again turning darker. He glanced and nodded at Naram-Sin, who nodded back at him. "Look, Ini, trust me, I don't like doing this. I don't wanna do this. No one likes doing this. We all know that. But you know there are people out there calling for you to be banned from football, saying that you're a disgrace to Adabian football and to football as a whole, that you're a maniac and a madman. So, considering the circumstances, Naram-Sin and I have tried to make this as easy as possible as you, and for all of us. I thought I'd just like to clarify that you are still very much valued around here, and you will still be retained as assistant manager.

"However, you will not travel with us to the Cup of Harmony and you will not participate in the team in any form during this period. You will stay home and any of your suggestions, tactics or team selection or whatever, will not be taken. You will also not be paid during this period. But once the Cup of Harmony is over, you will be allowed to come back as a full, working member of the staff, as long you agree to never, ever repeat what you did with the Starblaydis and offend an opposing team or a member of the public with... offensive words and actions. Should you give us reason to believe that you have violated this agreement, Ini, then I'm sorry, we will have to dispense with your services and shut the door on you. Forever."

Inimabakesh listened to each and every word, not raising any objection along the way. When all was said and done, he simply nodded in understanding. "Thank you," he said, taking a sip from his glass, looking intently at the two men. "I know I can trust you to make a fair decision. I guarantee you that I will not violate the agreement. You have my word on that." He glanced at the band and managed a smile, the first since he entered the place. "Now, they're pretty good, aren't they?"

Änna Kisdemin is a 16-year-old singer who is famous for winning the JWHF3 for Darkmania at the age of 12. She still sings and she has announced that she has the interest to perform at the "senior" WHF sometime in the future. In the time she has realized 2 albums, with her current one being a bestseller. And as Änna will pursue a career as a singer, she has no plans to retire that young, especially since she found a boyfriend at the age of 17, being a drummer. The concert hall is full of young Wërtyurians who have come to see their idol. As the final notes for her new song "Apples and Pears" fades and the sound of clapping fills the room with 400 filled seats in a 500-seat room. "Thank you". Änna thanks the audience as the band packs their instruments and heads toward the backstage. Well, some. "Now. Normally, i wound end my concert with my song "Appels and Pears", but there is something i need to do." The audience are confused. The Hour-long concert is over. What will Änna be doing? The audience gets confused. "Now, as you all know, there is a war between Polkopia and Indo States happening right now. This makes me sad. I sang a song about peace for 4 years ago and seeing both did not understand the message, I think ill sing this again. Thanks, I still remember my lyrics to "Fred i Mitt Land" (Peace in My Land). The stage has only Änna`s violin friend and her boyfriend on stage. "I wrote this song as one of my friends comes from a far-away country who was in a civil war at the time of making my song. I still have contact with her and she is ok. But right now, we will see children having their childhood ruing by some maniacs who will instead of sending pencils are sending missiles. I'm crying in my bed by the thought of children dying because of war. This song is dedicated to the victims of the war".

The drummer and the violist begin to play a cover of Änna`s winning song.

With only the violin and the drum who makes the music, Änna, in plain clothes begins to perform her song. She can be seen almost crying.

Nation Team to play in blanked out shirts.

Article written by: Edrÿk Tërmaserl

The Darkmanian Fooball Federation have annonced that for the upcoming match against Abanhfleft will play in plain black shirts with only the name and their number on the back in a mark of mourning due to the victims of the polkopian-fatiman war. It shold be added that Darkmania has a sensitive history of war as they were a victim of a brutal civil war. Änna Kisdemin (16), JWHF3 winner and anti-war activist, comments on the matter after she had performed a cover of her winning song "Fred I Mitt Land" (Peace In My Land). "Well... I see that they want to mark that in a football tournament, and as much as i am against war, it's not the best solution to mark this right now. You know i had a friend from far away land whos country went into civil war. And as much the marking of this horrific event may shed a light on this, its better of when Polkopia does it. After all, they do take part in the same fooball tournament as Darkmania".
