It took a few moments for fans of The West Phoenician Confederate to register the win.

At the top of the 9th, West Phoenician pitcher Hieu Khan stuck out Lexi Carpenter after a count of 2 balls and 2 strikes. 3 outs with 2 Cassadaigua players on base 1 and 3.

It only took a few moments before the crowded stadium erupted into cheers. The Confederate had won the match 3-2 against Cassadaigua, they would be heading to the finals to play off against Nova Anglicana.

Image

The eruption from the sea of purple in the stands set the Confederate own cheerleading squad into a frenzy of cartwheels and back flips whipping the crowd into an even bigger frenzy of celebration.

From the private box that seated third wife of the West Phoenician Emperor; Empress Cleopatra-Olympias Nèo Theà Philadèmos Gryphon-Bush with her ladies in waiting, security and other West Phoenician VIP'S also erupted in good cheer.
Fans began calling out her name seeing her love and devotion for baseball as a blessing that had encompassed the Confederate team blessing them with a terrific season.

"May the gods, goddess and Animal deities continue to bless us. Praise to those loyal fans who paid homage to mother-goddess Sulis Minerva, she has heard your prayers and acted. Praise also to those fans who lit candles to the Supreme God of the True Path," Empress Cleopatra-Olympias included.
The True Path was the official state church of The Confederate Empire of West Phoenicia.
A syncretic of Catholicism, Mormonism, Protestantism and Eastern Orthodox faiths.

"They have watched over our team and will continue to do so for the faithful. May they guide us against Nova Anglicana." The Empress ended her speech with a regal wave as the fans began to celebrate louder.

West Phoenicia was a unique Empire. It embraced the modern while never forgetting it's past and culture. Blending the two into something extraordinary for those first travelling to West Phoenicia or meeting a West Phoenicia. One could be shocked to see a businessman or doctor in modern attire and moments later see someone walking down the street in attire of Tudor England,
rococo coture of the French aristocrats of the ancient regime, Hellenistic influence, Greco-Roman and Greco-Egyptian. They are lovers of colour often being criticised for their overly lavish lifestyles, the vast population embraced the cultural identity, they would definitely be wearing their best moving into the finals.

Berry, O'Brien, plan new book, stir up divisions in the PJP

Maria McLaughlin, Londinium Courier

The ruling Progressive Justice Party can't catch a break these days. The PJP hustled Warren Berry and Edwin O'Brien, the sacked former Interior Minister and head of the Domestic Security Agency, respectively, out of sight after the revelation that they were behind illicit surveillance of the National Party, but they are speaking out. Apparently disgruntled at not getting a fair hearing from Prime Minister Hal Blackwood, they have talked to the media in recent days and have secured an advance from a relatively new publishing house, Collier Duncan, to write a book about their actions and side of the story.

Taking questions for the first time since their sacking, Berry and O'Brien claimed that they conducted the surveillance "for the good of the nation."

"We believed that the National Party had connections to extremist groups and organizations that needed to be confirmed. For a political party to associate with groups far outside the national mainstream, whose goals are antithetical to the ideals Nova Anglicana stands for, is completely unacceptable and could not have been permitted."

When asked why they didn't go through the proper channels, the pair said, "The Prime Minister and the system didn't need to be bothered with this, and in any case, the leadership of the PJP and the government is too lost in ideas of civility to permit the surveillance of political opponents, even when there is evidence."

They hinted that the Prime Minister may have been involved in the surveillance, saying, "Hal had his suspicions about the National Party just like we did and, we think, just like many Nova Anglicans do." When pressed on whether or not he approved it or knew about it, they refused to say. The pair closed their press conference by promising a book some time after the general election.

Both the Prime Minister and senior National Party officials rejected the bold claims when told about them later. Blackwood said, "I knew nothing about this surveillance and it was conducted entirely without my knowledge or approval. I would never countenance the surveillance of political parties or officials whom there is no evidence have committed any kind of crime." He refused to give any credence to the question of National Party connections to extremist groups, saying only, "There is no evidence I have seen to suggest that."

King Voss, National Party leader, said, "These are preposterous and obviously spurious claims made by two criminals that come from a government that we have no idea how deep the corruption runs. Their words don't have a whit of truth to them and I wouldn't give them a second thought. This is clearly a low-down political smear job. It's the National Party that is truly in touch with people's feelings here in Nova Anglicana; the PJP is so far outside the mainstream that I'm confident that voters will reject their corrupt left-wing ideas and choose a new government that truly serves the people."

Inside the PJP, the accusations roiled a party and a membership already wondering how to deal with the surveillance scandal. Publicly, Blackwood isn't resigning, intends to run for re-election with the full support of the party, and Berry and O'Brien are discredited and disgruntled former officials. Privately, some party officials expressed doubt. One said, "I honestly can't say that I one hundred percent think Berry and O'Brien are lying. I mean, the whole National Party's kind of fishy, and I can't believe that the Prime Minister wouldn't know that." Sources indicate that while the Cabinet has closed ranks around Blackwood and is fully committed to his version of events, some on the left wing of the rank-and-file are sceptical. They are willing to believe that the National Party is connected to extremists, and intend to use that message as they campaign. Other members of the coalition, especially the Liberal Secularist backbenchers, intend to distance themselves from their coalition partners as much as they can without repudiating them.

The most recent poll indicates that 39 percent of the country believe Blackwood had nothing to do with the surveillance, and 48 percent believe he had some knowledge of it, with 13 percent undecided. But among those 48 percent, just 40 percent believe that Blackwood approved the surveillance. Among self-identified PJP members, the numbers are 44 percent to 38 percent, with 18 percent undecided. 26 percent of those PJP members that believe Blackwood knew about believe he approved it.

A flash online poll conducted by the Courier after the Berry-O'Brien press conference showed that 33 percent of respondents believed Berry and O'Brien about suspected National Party extremist connections, and 45 percent did not. Those numbers were 38 and 41 among self-identified PJP members. The numbers indicate a divided public and a divided party. With the general election just a few weeks away, the waters just got a whole lot muddier.

Today on West Phoenicia Sports #1 we have a number of stories in our Sports segment that is sure to see the appetite for all our sport fans.

First up in the nation of Ko-oren where our cricket team The Lighting Bolts have been participating in the World Twenty20 Championships IX. After breeding through qualifiers, group stages and the semi finals they had the honour of gracing the finals against a team from Rooimervania. Winning the toss they elected to bat second.
After a line up of terrific bowlers led by Alan Narre, they were able to knock the Rooimervanian players out for a total of 128 runs.
West Phoenicia seized the day scoring 129 with only 2 out. It was some terrific cricket with both Emanon brothers batting 50 runs apiece.
This is the first cricket title they have won after placing second at the previous championship against Northwest Kalactin.
Also true to her word the Emanon Brothers grandmother did streak across the field afterwards to the horror of many Rooimervanian fans.

In other sporting news West Phoenicians golfer Jasmine Wentworth who represented West Phoenicia at the last Olympics Games and was looking to place on the team for the upcoming Olympics has shocked onlookers at the Melbourne-Have International Airport as she prepared to fly out for a tournament. After being asked by a reporter if being a lesbian helped with her golf game she proceeded to chase the reporter around the airport with what golfing fans said was a number 6 iron. Her outburst has gone viral with many onlookers recording the incident and loading it up to Social media.
Jasmine Wentworth has since apologised claiming the flu medication she had been taken had caused her to lash out .

Baseball fans are in a state of delirium as the West Phoenician Confederate have finally made it into the finals of the World Baseball Classic after beating some of the best to be there.
They face the players from Nova Anglicana at the Tundra Falls Proving Grounds in Nesmanistan.

While many already feel like winners for getting to the finals, hardcore loyists are wanting a title. A tie would not only boost the confidence for seasons to come, but so honour a terrific manager who is leaving after this season.
The Confederate hit the ground running for game 1, scoring 7 runs with 6 of those being at the bottom of the sixth where Jack Navy pulled off a three-run homer that had fans leaping out of their seats in ecstasy.
With game 1 falling into the West Phoenician camp, fans are lining up to purchase tickets for game 2 in the hopes the Confederate will keep up the momentum they started.

Blackwood sacks civil servants, introduces anti-corruption package

Maria McLaughlin, Londinium Courier

Prime Minister Hal Blackwood held a press conference today in which he announced the sacking of six low to mid-level and two senior-level employees of the Interior Ministry and Domestic Security Agency. The two senior-level employees were Undersecretary for Legal Affairs Carolyn Wolfe and Deputy Head of Operations Irvin Perkins. Mrs. Wolfe's role as Undersecretary for Legal Affairs was to deal with the front and back end of the justice system, both obtaining warrants and coordinating charges and prosecution with the Ministry of Justice. Mr. Blackwood said that she failed to follow the appropriate channels for obtaining warrants and approving surveillance and had to be dismissed. Mr. Perkins' role was as supervisor of surveillance operations for the DSA, and he was involved in the illicit surveillance of the National Party members. Mr. Blackwood said that the sacking of these employees would "clear the Ministry of those bad apples who could have and should have stopped these actions from taking place."

Not resolved was whether or not Mr. Berry, Mr. O'Brien, Mrs. Wolfe, Mr. Perkins, or any other sacked employee would face criminal charges. The law establishing the Domestic Security Agency, the Protection from Internal Threats Act, does not specify punishment for those who fail to establish proper evidence and get a warrant before approving surveillance, but legal experts The Courier has talked to have said that the sacked employees could be prosecuted for violations of civil rights, which could carry a sentence of years in prison, probation, or other penalties. While it may seem criminal to some to not throw the book at these individuals, it may not be possible. Political parties and general sentiment is against unwarranted surveillance, and the idea that someone might break that taboo was not previously considered.

The anti-corruption legislation Mr. Blackwood unveiled at the press conference and introduced into Parliament today, the Integrity and Accountability in Public Office Act, would address some of those issues. It creates a new crime for "criminal misuse of government power", which covers abuses of power not under previous corruption laws. Previous laws dealt mostly with bribery or misuse of government funds, racketeering, or fraud. This new crime, which would address violations of rights, favoritism by government employees, or willfully misinterpreting government statutes so as not to serve the people. Mr. Blackwood gave examples such as the Ministry of Justice denying due process, the Ministry of Agriculture expediting processes for certain individuals because of connections within the Ministry, or the Ministry of Labor refusing to arbitrate between business and labor because the hypothetical Minister reads the statutes as suggesting rather than requiring that duty. Such violations of this law would carry sentences of three to five years in prison and would disbar the individual from holding a central government job again. The law would also amend PITA to punish those who do not go through the proper processes for obtaining warrants and evidence with up to eight years in prison and require approval of all surveillance by the Prime Minister.

Additionally, the law prevents former members of Parliament from serving as lobbyists, which is up from a ten-year ban currently, and
prevents former civil servants who reach a certain pay grade from serving as lobbyists for ten years. Members of Parliament would be restricted from meeting with lobbyists until after their meetings with non-lobbyist constituent(s) each day and MPs schedules would be required to be made public. No individual running for public office would be allowed to receive more than A£50,000 in total from all organisations and businesses. Political parties, who had previously been allowed to donate unlimited amounts to candidates directly, would be restricted to A£10,000. All committee meetings in Parliament would be required to be recorded and either broadcast on a new state channel dedicated to government workings or uploaded to the government's official website.

Good government groups hailed the law as a good step forward, while the opposition continued to say it wasn't enough. King Voss, National Party leader, said, "I still would like to see these individuals involved punished and for this government to resign. We should also make it illegal to surveil a political party. As long as the government can do that, that's an invitation to spy on political opponents." It remains to be seen how this bill will be changed or amended before it comes to the floor, and whether or not it will change the polls. Currently, the PJP are sitting at a projected twenty-six percent of seats, a new low for them or either of the major political parties. Time will tell if Mr. Blackwood has done enough to regain voters' confidence.

West Phoenician Confederate pitcher Ashwyn Side was called in to relieve Jordan Thomas at the top of the 5th innings after Jordan had allowed Nova Anglicana batters to score 3 runs, 2 in the first innings and 1 in the second.
Ashwyn Side one of fhe Confederate best control pitchers was called in and stop Nova Anglicana from scoring any other runs for game 2.

Nova Anglicana pitchers were also playing a superb game, for the first six innings their pitchers were flawless in their pitching, striking out the majority of the Confederate line up. For those who were able to hit the ball, Nova Anglicana fielders easily dispatched them back to the dug out.

A glimmer of hope gave birth at the bottom of the seventh with back to back home runs, the courtesy of Glen Melbourne on his first hit and Jack Navy on his third.
1 run behind built the energy and desire for the Confederates but unfortunately the last two innings did not bear the fruit they needed.

Loud cheers erupted from the Nova Anglicana fans when it was clear the game was over and they had won the second game 3-2.

West Phoenicia has vowed it will be back for the third game with a hunger to pull in their second win than the next and the next.

West Phoenicia is in top form and playing a team with equal skill and conviction and with Empress Cleopatra-Olympias's birthday falling on the same day as Game 3 it is going to be one big celebration. A win would be the icing on the cake to honour an empress who has embraced the passion of West Phoenician baseball.

Condorcet Paradox

Politics, polls, voting, and stats galore

What do provincial polls have to say?

Gordon Tate

With the surveillance scandal and anti-corruption politics dominating the national scene, how are voters reacting on a provincial level? Are provincial elections mini-versions of national elections or do they turn on local issues? The latest projections are below.

While the provincial-level PJP members don't suffer as much as we think the national-level PJP will, they still suffer a lot, losing 18 seats, or more than 16% of their total. This causes them to lose Nova Scotia, become the largest party in only 2 provinces, and rely more on other parties to prop up their governments.

Seats Before: 109/300
Projected Seats: 116/300
+/-: +7

The People's Party are a beneficiary of the PJP falling off. As the other major party, swing voters who distrust the PJP will move to the People's Party. It helps them capture Nova Scotia and build on their leads in New Brunswick and Quebec.

National Party

Seats Before: 13/300
Projected Seats: 18/300
+/-: +5

The National Party is one of the big winners, picking up 5 new projected seats, as voters appear to have sympathy for them having been spied on. They even pick up a seat in Quebec, where they hadn't run before, and attract some votes in the NAAZE, where they hadn't run before either.

Liberal Secularists

Seats Before: 22/300
Projected Seats: 23/300
+/-: +1

The Liberal Secularists appear not to be harmed by their support of the national coalition government, and pick up a seat in the NAAZE. With the Liberal Secularists and Equality making up a third of a possible coalition in the NAAZE, look for that province to swing left on social issues.

Stewardship Party

Seats Before: 24/300
Projected Seats: 26/300
+/-: +2

The Stewardship Party seems untainted by the PJP scandal, even picking up a couple of seats as voters who like the coalition may shift to them. This will give them more sway in PEI and the NAAZE, where they will form integral parts of the coalition government.

Libertarian Party

Seats Before: 22/300
Projected Seats: 23/300
+/-: +1

This is a case where, I think, we will see the national and provincial polls differ. The Libertarians are up in national polls, but because provinces don't have surveillance powers, they merely pick up another seat in their stronghold of Quebec.

Equality

Seats Before: 1/300
Projected Seats: 3/300
+/-: +2

Equality makes progress! It looks like they are the protest vote of choice for certain left-leaning people dissatisfied with the PJP. With another seat in the NAAZE, they can start to drive policy there, and perhaps they can extract concessions from the coalition government in Newfoundland and Labrador. In any case, the more important thing is whether or not they can hold on to these seats once things settle down in future elections.

Socialist Workers' Party

Seats Before: 1/300
Projected Seats: 1/300
+/-: 0

The Socialists actually lose ground in the polls, though not in seats, but in votes. They'll hold on to their one seat in the NAAZE, but they are surpassed in vote totals by Equality. They may have to moderate or hope for a financial crash to get more power.

Democracy

Seats Before: 1/300
Projected Seats: 1/300
+/-: 0

Democracy, though I have a soft spot for them, look like they will fail to increase their seats at the expense of the PJP. Maybe if they expand from being a one-issue party, they'll have more success.

Dominionist Party

Seats Before: 0/300
Projected Seats: 0/300
+/-: 0

The Dominionists keep plugging away at it, but they are unlikely to even win one seat ever.

October 26th was a jammed packed day of fun and entertainment which ended in a fabulous birthday celebration.

Day 3 at the Tundra Falls Proving Ground The Confederates took control scoring 5 runs; Emanuel Army scored at the top of the second. Glen Melbourne and Emanuel Army each scoring a run in the 5th and Kevin Dances and Lukas Towers each hitting a home run in the 8th.
Through all their hard work and skill Nova Anglicana players could not get the better of the West Phoenician with the Nova Anglicana team losing 3-5.

As an added treat due to it being the birthday of Empress Cleopatra-Olympias, she sent thousands of toffee apple treats to West Phoenician and Nova Anglicana children who attended the game as a special treat.

A grand ball was held in Empress Cleopatra-Olympias honour for her birthday. Hosted in the Spring Palace ballroom.

Hundreds of nobles attended rubbing shoulders with celebrities, sport stars, politicians and religious clergy including The Emperor's first wife Empress Angelique, while the Emperor's second wife Empress Alotta was it present due to another pressing engagement.
While she was notably missing she did arrange for a host of singers, dancers and performers who as a gift to the Empress reenacted The Battle of the Ptolamaic Islands.
While it was a delightful cabaret, many guests found the performance to be in bed taste; the Battle of Ptolamaic Islands was a devastating loss to the islands in the 1800's when West Phoenicia invaded.

A grand feast that hundreds of cooks and chefs had prepared with all of Empress Cleopatra-Olympias favourite foods was placed in the grand reception room, guests feasted as they watched the performance of minstrels, acrobats, dancers and fire-breather.

The night finished with a stringed orchestra luring guests into the grand ballroom where couples danced the night away waltzing. For those not in a dancing mood, dozens of telescopes were set up by the royal astromers and their assistants in the royal gardens and on the balconies so guests could look up at the stars.

WP Sports 1 television ratings are soaring during their live coverage of the World Baseball Classic and it's follow up talk show Locker Room; which features a panel of baseball player's and former coaches breaking down each game and featuring highlights from that game.
West Phoenician viewership of WP Sports 1 is at an all-time high that has not been seen since the Summer Olympic Games hosted by Kelssek and Vekaiyu.
The third game in the series pulled in 14.1 million viewers. Rating analysts early ratings for game 4 to be at 14.7.
More and more West Phoenicians across the Empire are tuning in as The Confederates inch closer to claiming the title for the World Baseball Classic 44th edition against Nova Anglicana, where it currently sits 3-1 in West Phoenicia's favour.

West Phoenicia is slowly building in confidence that they may be crowned the winner of this series but Coach Jacob Prosper is more cautious, "I won't count my chickens until they all have been hatched. We are playing some great baseball but we have three games to go. Goddess Fortuna is a beloved, beautiful Goddess of Luck and Fate of we appear to arrogant, believing we alone control this game she will intervene and turn this game on its head by swinging the winning pendulum in the opposite direction. We just need to keep up her offerings as well as use the skills bestowed to is to keep playing a great game."
