WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC 44

OFFICIAL NEWMANISTAN HOSTING BID

Greetings, World Baseball Classic Council members. Our upcoming Classic needs a host, and Newmanistan would love the chance to host this glorious tournament for the sixth time. It would be the first time that we hosted the competition since returning to the international scene in World Baseball Classic 38. This time, we would love the opportunity to defend our title on our home turf. It would be the second time that we hosted the competition as the reigning champion.

Where is the pretty host bid logo?

I’ve never been one to create logos! If someone wants to make one, I can upload it. Let’s move on to the important stuff now.

I) Scorination
The current version of xkoranate, 0.3.3, with the Saintland NSFS formula.

II) RP Bonus
Daily RP bonus potential will be generous, and cumulative until the end of the group stage. RP bonus will be cut in half prior to the beginning of the playoffs. A roster bonus will also be provided, and whatever is earned with it will not be amount subject to the cutting in half of RP bonus. I most definitely prefer quality over quantity. Quality, in my mind, represents using all information that is available to you. For example, if providing a game recap as a RP, don’t say “the Newbiestan closer came in for the 9th and blew the lead” if Newbiestan provided a roster and named who their closer is on that roster.

III) Format
The number of groups and teams per group will be sensible based on the number of signups, such as:
36: 6 groups of 6
40: 8 groups of 5
42: 6 groups of 7
48: 8 groups of 6

48 is a nice workable number to shoot for, but I’ll make 54, 56, 60, or 64 work as well.

Each team will play their group mates three times at home, and three times on the road, as has been customary in recent Classics. Three matchdays will be scorinated per day, as we have become used too. Due to the restrictions of xkoranate, it is not possible to scorinate one complete series with each scoriante day, so it will be as if there are six round robins, much like we saw in WBC 43.

Playoffs:
16-teams will make the playoffs, though if signups are 48 or higher, there will likely be more playoff teams. How we arrive at the 16 teams will depend on the number of groups. If there are 6 groups, then I will take the top 2 teams per group automatically; and then the best four teams otherwise after that. If there are five groups, the same idea applies, but there would be six "wild cards".

Group winners will be seeded 1-6 regardless of their actual record (Reason is to give incentive to win the group even if a team is safely in second). Seeds 7-16 will be based on their actual records. There will be NO re-seeding as the tournament progresses. Every series, except for the championship series, will be a best-of-five. The championship series will be a best-of-seven.

IV) Tiebreakers
1) H2H Record
2) Overall Run Differential
3) Overall Run Differential/9 (essentially this eliminates runs scored or given up in extra innings)
4) Tiebreaker game
I do not use H2H run differential as a tiebreaker on this logic:
Team A and B split the series 1-1. Team A won the first game at home, 5-4, and never hit in the bottom of the ninth. Team B won the second game, 5-3, at home, thanks to a three run HR in the bottom of the ninth. On this, Team B wins this tiebreaker. But is it fair, since B had a 9th inning in their win when A did not in their win? In my opinion, it is not, so I do not use this tiebreaker. While the same thing can happen with Overall Run Differential, I feel that is different as the teams were not against each other, head to head.

Note: If a tie between A, B, C, and D must be broken; and A wins the tiebreaker at stage 3 and B, C, D are still tied, then the new tie between B, C, D is broken by reverting back to stage 1, H2H record between the three of them.

V) Experience

View my signature for the tournaments that I have hosted, I’ve done this often, and in more then just baseball, including the World Cup and three Cups of Harmony.

Please feel free to ask questions!

Great bid overall. One thing I would like to point out is this clause:
Newmanistan wrote:Every series, except for the championship series, will be a best-of-three. The championship series will be a best-of-seven.

I know that in the past you have hosted three-game playoff series all the way up to the championship, but at least as I remember, I believe there was a bit of uproar about this during WBC 38 (the last Newmanistan host), due to the number of upsets that season (which were blamed on the short series and therefore more likelihood of randomness). I would like to ask if you are willing to change this is in the bid, and I'd also appreciate if others could weigh in. I only bring it up, because it has been pretty typical in recent WBCs to have best-of-five series in the early rounds, rather than best-of-three.

It's been a while, but I don't recall uproar in 38. Perhaps I just forgot about it, if so. I am not married to the idea of best of three, so if people would rather the best of five, we can certainly do that.

I can't find this in the bid so I'll ask it:

Will the IC length of the group stage resemble what has been the norm in recent WBCs (i.e. teams play each of their opponents 6 times with 3 games scorinated per OOC day)?

And if we are doing that, will it be a 3 game series against a single opponent on each match day, or will it be 3 games against different opponents the way Cass did it last time?

I have made a couple edits into the bid to account for the above questions and concerns. Each series, other then the championship (which is a best-of-seven), will be a best-of-five.

Also added in is a response to the questions raised by FFR and Sherpa. Each team will play three home and three road against each group opponent, and three matchdays will be scorinated per day. Due to the restrictions of xkoranate, the only way it can be done is the way it was done in the last Classic.

Thank you for electing me as the host for WBC 44. I will be looking to make the everything thread this weekend, probably Sunday evening. With signups at 51, I would like to hit 54 or 56.

Let's see if we can get unique signups to hit that number first until Sunday morning. Then, I will be asking for numbers puppets, but let's try for unique users first!
