Spálgleann's Millennial Stadium was illuminated by a festival of lights and fireworks as the open ceremonies were underway.

SPÁLGLEANN – The 2018 Summer Invictus Games are underway.

His Majesty King Kenneth IV declared the Spálgleann' Games open as the Invictus cauldron was lit.

Overall the ceremony was a reflection of both Glytteronian history and culture. The games' organizers placed a special emphasis on Glytter's contribution to pop culture, with performances from and homages to some of the biggest names in Glytteronian music. A special duet was sung by Ashling and the Duchess. The two performers put a modern twist on Ashling's hit Sétanta, mashing it up with the Duchess' Alexandre. Ashling, the turned four-term Social Democratic TC and former Minister of Culture, performed publicly for the first time she she retired over six years ago.

Other performances saw HRH the Duke of Bulfawst's group, No Direction, as well as Annie MacDouglas, Tenic Women, and Me2. The organizers wanted to "reflect the greatness of Glytter's contribution to the modern music industry", according to a spokesperson. A number of other celebrities and well-known media personalities took part. However, the ceremony was also ripe with Glytteronian cultural traditions. The story told was that of Glytter's long history, drawing on the country's thousandth year as its current iteration - the Kingdom of Glytter. It began with the unification of the islands under Daireann I, which was followed by a crash-course of Glytteronian history.

Over five-thousand people volunteered to help make the opening ceremonies a reality.

The Invictus Torch was escorted down the Royal Mile by the Royal Regiment of Spálgleann and the pipe-band of the Royal Glyt Dragoon Guards, starting at Clochnach Fortress before arriving at Carrowdun Palace. From Carrowdun, it was driven through the city by HRH the Prince Elton, known for his stint as a race-car driver, in Porsche 911 GT3 before being transferred to Lizzie O'Lee, Glytter's great marathon runner, and a group of student runners from around the country. It then arrived at Millennium Stadium in Spálgleann's Garment District neighborhood, once the epicenter of the Glytteronian textile industry.

It was a spectacular affair and, once it had finished, it was time for the King to declare the games open.

"I declare open the games of Spálgleann, celebrating the thirtieth such games in the modern era" The King said as a mix of trumpets and bagpipes, a homage to Ghaillish culture, blared before the cauldron was lit. Fireworks and lights filled the stadium marking the official declaration, accompanied by applause and cheers from those in attendance.

For his part, the King also partook in the opening ceremonies. In a tribute to the victims of the 23 August Attacks of 2016, His Majesty led relatives of the victims to the center of the stadium, where 87 wreathes were laid in honor of each victim. Pipe-bands from around the country, including all branches of the Glytteronian Armed Forced and the Spálgleann division of the Royal Police Force, played Amazing Grace as the once-shining stadium went dark. It was followed by a flyover of the Royal Glytteronian Air Force.

It was after this tribute that the torch entered the stadium. A chorus of children from around the country sang Isles of Wonder as the torch arrived at the cauldron.

With the opening ceremonies finished, the 2018 Invictus Games are well underway. They will run until 18 August. The closing ceremonies will take place on 19 August.

SPORTS: WOMEN'S HOCKEY TEAM EXPECTED TO DO WELL AT INVICTUS GAMES
After a slump over the past few years, the team is likely to contend for the gold in August.

AQUILA, AQUILA -
Image
Theresa Colleti and Veronica de Tuccia celebrate a scored goal.

After years of slow decline, the Aquilian Women's Hockey Team may be back on the rise. So some experts claim, as the national team gets ready to take the field in the upcoming Invictus Games in August- including the possibility of a prized gold wreath.

Filed hockey experts are excited about this team this year having the potential to do well at the Summer Invictus Games. Hockey analyst Michael Grego commented that "The Women's team this year has improved greatly. They have a good offense, but perhaps more importantly their defense is extremely tough. Their game has definitely improved since two years ago."

Aquila's National Women's Field Hockey Team is recruited from the best women field hockey players from the ABFF, just as the Men's team is recruited from the best players from the ABF, both professional leagues. Both teams are distinguished by their bright yellow jerseys, and because of this, the women's team known as the Regales Flavae and the men's team as the Regales Favi, both of which mean the "Royal Yellows". Field hockey is important to Aquilian culture, as Aquila was the place that it was founded. It is considered the national sport of the Kingdom, although unofficially. King Gregorius is a known but tacit supporter of the sport, whereas other members of the Royal Family and many of the ability are known to be avid fans of the sport. Even the granddaughter of the reigning Duke of Volunsena, Veronica de Tuccia, is an national sports icon, being one of the best players in the world and the Captain of the national team.

Most experts agree that women team's decline began after winning the International Hockey Tournament in 2008. During the Invictus Games in 2010, they managed to snag a silver wreath. In the IHT of 2012, they came in a disappointing 4th place, and did not earn a wreath in the 2014 Invictus Games in Satucin. In 2016, when the IHT was hosted in Aquila, they came in sixth, severely disappointing the fans. "To perform very poorly in the tournament, right in your home country, especially when this sport is serious in your home country, is quite disappointing for many," Michael Grego commented. "Many at the time, and still some to this day, expected it to get worse, to get on the levels of the slump that lasted well over a decade through the 1950s."

Throughout these tournaments, the loss of older players and the younger players who replaced them were crippling to the team. While the team managed to keep a powerful offense, especially under ABFF superstar Veronica de Tuccia, the defense had been getting consecutively worse and worse, leading to the team losing more frequently when it came to the international stage. However, experts now say that this national team's defense is strongly improved, and that this might turn around the team's fortunes for the better. Another analyst, Francescus Trein, pointed out that "While a team must have a good offense to score goals, a weak defense can easily lead to swift defeats. However, with an improved defense, the overall team is better balanced and thus more likely to succeed. That is why I think they can be series contenders this upcoming Games, because of this newfound balance on the team. You can't have just offense, you can't have just defense- one without the other, and you lose. But when you have both, then you can win."

However, the team hopes to finally turn this streak of losing in the upcoming Games. Veronica de Tuccia, when asked to give comment, said that "The past few years have been rough for us. But now we are prepared to go to these upcoming games and hopefully bring back the Kingdom another Gold Wreath. We've grown in many ways, especially with the growth in our defense. I have full confidence in my teammates; I know we will bring all we can to the field."

The team's coach, Linus Coelo, said that "I know this team well. I know we have had some issues in the past, especially our defense. However, I know we couldn't focus on that. To focus too much on that would cause the team to lose sight of the future. And we couldn't allow that to happen. So, I've helped these ladies the best that I can. We've been working hard to get them ready for the upcoming games, and I know that they are ready for this. We've got tough opponents- especially the Asterian team- but, if we trust in God and keep pushing hard, I have full confidence that we can win a gold wreath."

However, some expressed doubt at these claims. Analyst and sports writer Carolus Henro noted that "All these claims that the team is truly any better is questionable at best. The women's teams for several years have been in decline; I see no reason for the reversal of this trend. Honestly, while it may be possible that they might have improved, I sincerely doubt it. I do not think they will be series contenders from the gold. This team isn't ready for it anyways, even if as they said they had improved. By some miracle they have, we will have to wait and see if it comes true during the games or not."

This year's Summer Invictus Games are taking place this August in the city of Spálgleann in the Kingdom of Glytter. The opening ceremonies will begin on August 3rd. As all the Aquilian Invictus teams and athletes get ready in these next few weeks, we be praying for them and waiting to see what God has in store.

Vredlandia Catches "Invictus-Fever" After Surprising Victory

Eldburg, Vredlandia - TV ratings for the Invictus Games have risen noticably after the Vredlandian basketball team managed to score victory and Vredlandia's first gold medal 2018. Commentators and average citizens alike believe that the time for another Invictus bid has finally come. Reportedly, Seneschal Treuwegen himself has taken a liking to the idea.

Vredlandia is enthusiastic after its boys won a gold medal in basketball at the Invictus Games. It's the first such success in basketball, one nobody really saw coming. Although basketball has become one of the standard teachings in Vredlandian P.E. classes, the President of the Vredlandian Basketball Association still sees significant deficits. "Many teachers treat basketball as inferior, because they weren't trained in it when they were younger", he believes. It's a sentiment he also feels much of the media and establishment have, and one of the reasons basketball is underfunded and rarely recognized. "We may not have had much money, but the right mentality. Maybe now, with our victory, money will start to flow as well."

Maybe one indicator of better times are the TV ratings, which rose sharply as it became clear that Vredlandia might win its first gold medal in basketball. Ratings also increased sharply, from a market share of 28.6 % for the ceremony - a share so frigheningly low, TV executives were starting to worry - to 41.4 % in the basketball finals. Ratings remained high afterwards.

Jon Heyderlein, bar owner in Eldburg, confirmed the newfound enthusiasm. "People are flowing in only to watch Invictus with friends and colleagues. It's extraordinary, almost like a football World Cup, and definitely not something we had last time. Asked about what the reaction to the basketball victory was, Heyderlein laughs. "It was great, just great. We have such a cool, humble team. Everyone was really happy for them. One girl so much so, she accidently let go of her beer when she started cheering. The bottle almost hit me in the head, but most definitely made a mess behind the counter. But it's all fun, we had a great laugh."

One of those trying to use the newfound enthusiasm to their advantage is Seneschal Treuwegen. Him and Kloth see this as a chance to have an overarching narrative for the next election: "We'll bring the Invictus Games to Vredlandia". With that, they're jumping on a bandwaggon of enthusiasts in the media and business who are loudly calling for Vredlandia to launch an own bid to host the Invictus Games, but them and the Unity Party can also make these calls with the most credibility. They're the establishment that has hosted so many great things, they have the ties and money. Raivo Kloth, accordingly, is already bringing the Unity Party in line, and with success: Franz Klee, mayor of Eldburg, is very sympathetic towards the idea. The mayors of Vredensund and Ragnvald reportedly want to hold local referendums first, but are also in agreement. And then there are the Ministers of Health and Law, for who such an event is a tremendous opportunity to advertize themselves. It could boost their career - if they win the election first.

And so this is more than a national wave of sympathy for the Invictus Games. It sets the stage for another fight during the elections. But that - and so everyone agrees - is a matter for another time. For now, Vredlandians want to enjoy Invictus. And whether it's at Heyderlein's bar, the National Assembly or basketball courts around the country, Vredlandians most certainly do.

Former Minister of Defence Franz Grunwald called on His Holyness' Government to react to the terror attacks in Tirona without delay. "Terrorists murder more than 750 civilians and wound more than 9000 more and Kloth and Treuwegen and the rest sit there and twiddle their thumbs. You don't need to be a former military intelligence officer like me to know that this horrendous crime is most likely not the end of it all. Vredlandian authorities have so far mostly declined to comment, at best saying that the situation is monitored closely. Adrien Parmentier
9th of August, 2018
Millennium Stadium, Spálgleann

"Allez! En garde!" he yelled. His right hand was held behind his person, with his left hand gripped firmly on the handle.

The exhilaration of the whole ordeal was immense. An intoxication, a 'high', that got his adrenaline pumping and his brain producing more endorphins then any other activity he could think of.

Adrien, a master of the Épée form of fencing. Two time Invictus Gold Winner in this particular fields. Commentators at home had given him numerous, almost mythological traits. He was "fleet-of-foot", "a dancer above all" and -- perhaps paradoxically -- an "unmoving juggernaut". These three traits had given him the respected visage -- a gallant knight of the Gaullican School, who was quick, responsive, mobile -- yet defensive in truth.

His opponent was nothing to snub, either. He was a Glytteronian; they had met before: Séamus Ailin. The Glytteronian was smaller. The untrained eye would see this as an advantage; a smaller target, usually more nimble. Aye, perhaps. But Adrien and Séamus had battled in numerous assaults before.

And Adrien had reach.

He struck forth with a speed unparalleled but Séamus was no novice. His blade rose and both swordsman clashed in their sportsman's dance. Their gentleman's duel.

Sweat trickled on his brow, behind his mask. But it was not an uncomfortable sweat, it was the sweat of the game. It was as common as the hits themselves.

They broke, distanced themselves towards the edge lines of the piste.

Adrien began to close the distance, thudding his foot down in an appel that caught Séamus' attention that broke into a swift movement of flesh and steel. He raises the blade, swinging across in an attaque au fer that turned into a feint as the Glytteronian readjusted his sword to match his attacker's.

The trap was set.

With another quick motion, the feint was executed, and the button of the blade pressed itself into the upper left breast of the Glytteronian, thudding forcefully onto the white jacket.

"Touché!" the referee called, swiping his arms in a cross motion to gesture to both contestants to return to their starting positions.

1-0 for the Gaullican.

The Victory, like any good glass of wine, was sweet and well deserved.

The Gaullican and Glytteronian had been a good match up indeed. Séamus early slip up was not to be repeated, with two points scored on his behalf to make up for his initial faltering. But Adrien had been the better man today, scoring his remaining two points in a series of good, unexpected moves.

He had made use of a feint leading into the little-used Vredo-Weranian 'Zornhau'. scoring a point as the button of the blade 'drew' a diagonal line on Séamus' torso.

The second had come from a careful, and powerful, parry with the forte of his blade. This led into a series of relentless attacks, with the final striking past the Glytteronian's underarm protection to pierce his jacket at the ribs.

Adrien lamented on his victory as he sat in the official vehicle that had been given to him. Chauffeured back to the hotel, for tomorrow was a busy day. The Épée final, and projections had him against the Vredlandian. He was looking forward to that. But moreso for the rest his hotel would offer him.

Spálgleann had been a welcoming city.

"Driver?" he asked, nonchalantly whilst his fingers drummed rhythmically upon the armrest.

"Mm?" came the reply.

"I'm looking for a good restaurant, do you have any you could name?"

There was an uncomfortable pause in thought. The light that was piercing through the windscreen of the car went from a fierce red, to a pleasant yellow, to the welcome green.

"Well.." the man began. But whatever he was to say was cut short, as two bright white lights from the right side of the vehicle shone through its passenger and rear windows.

SPAGLEANN, GLYTTER- Today marked a historic event, when the Celestial Isles participated in its first Invictus Games ever. The insular empire lacked the proper infrastructure and commitment to the outside world in times past to participate, and only in the past few decades has been opening up once more. This season, a proper interest was shown in Yocatullic participation-and the people of The Isles are eager to prove themselves on the competitive field.

The move came to both criticism and delight from many locals. More conservative factions are particularly confused in the matter- for on one hand they favor athletic competition as an ancient display of the warrior spirit, and wish to give such a show to the whole of the world. On the other hand, many loathe the unwanted outside influence that participation in the Invictus Games might bring to the homeland, and do not wish their warriors to show their skills and cultural arts to outsiders in what they argue is a cheap display for attention devoid of proper meaning and spiritual significance. More liberal factions in Yocatullic society, however, experience sheer delight from the idea. They state that any chance to display Yocatullic culture abroad is one that should be taken, that the glorious rewards for any potential victory outweigh the consequences of an honorable defeat, and that the scale of the games allow Yocatullic participants to give a true display of their ancient martial arts and upkeep these sacred traditions.

The Celestial Empress was very pleased with the coming of the latest Invictus season. At a time when more Yocatullic people, both abroad and domestically, have access to international media, she said that she figured it was about time to inject indigenous Sublustrian contestants into the contest, warriors of the ancient ways, masters of the martial arts, to compete with foreigners from all around the world- and for better or for worse to bring recognition and note to the small island confederation. Even the other chieftains were proud to send their warriors! We talked to La Aoleieulaula Neru, the reigning chief of Tai Pe'a, to hear his opinion.

"It is a very exciting time," said Aoleieulaula, "In these days where we can send warriors to distant lands, and people from all over the world will get to see their skill. I remember a time in my youth when such a thing was unimaginable, when competing warriors even from different islands was a special occasion- and the extent of Sublustria was essentially the entire world. I remember an age where Euclea was an abstraction, some far-off land we knew of but had no real way to verify. They were beyond our world, our people, so far across the sea that they were like aliens to us. It would be like someone saying they're from Lino- it's just something you can barely comprehend, you hear but you don't really understand, like it has no meaning."

"Now," he says, "We can go anywhere in just a matter of hours, at most a day. Internet connects many as well. It's an amazing thing to think about, and how now our outlying islands can experience the rest of the world from a chair in Makuahine. I think it is important we acknowledge the new world we live in, and moreover make ourselves known to this world. These fine young athletes should experience this sort of long travel, to know where their diaspora brethren live, to see what the rest of the world has- and to know, comparatively, how the Celestial Isles is. How they differ from us, and how strong our traditions are compared to theirs. How ancient our ways. And how our ancient ways are still relevant in the world today."

Yocatullic athletes are optimistic about their playing. One, Munata, or "red snake", told us this: "It's exciting to be here. I am proud to represent my tribe and my people to the world. Even if we don't get any medals, that we came to be here today, for the remainder of the Games even, it is a remarkable experience. It's not about winning, it's about being here, with the best of the world, playing to represent the Celestial Isles abroad. I feel greatly honored by just having the chance. I would like us to win at least one, though."

Ever since the predecessors of the modern Invictus Games were first played across Artis, they've been an inspiration for friendly competition without borders. An Artiot javelineer, Leonidas Manakis, responded on his Yocatullic counterparts- "I think that it's great another team is participating. It's been a long time since these were just the Pan-Artiot Games, and the essential message of competition without borders reaches a new height with Yocatullic participation. Their javelin team is honestly kinda scary!" he laughed.

It seems both the Islanders and those from the international community are eager to see how this plays out. Meanwhile, thousands have rented space in Makuahine to watch the Games, coming from villages with no access to such media. Will the cheering fans at home propel their team to a victory? Only time will tell.

Seneschal Treuwegen is in Glytter for talks on bilateral relations and Euclea. Here's him and the Secretary for Sports presenting Glytter's Taoiseach Frank Casarnach with a paddle. Invictus nerds know: This is the one that last won us gold. Nice gesture or friendly challenge?

GLYTTER HOPEFUL AS WOMEN'S FOOTBALL TEAM PREPARES FOR SEMI-FINALS MATCH
Players are confident that they will have the upper-hand against Cheonhae and advance to the gold medal match

Síle Ní Ríain, who has coached the women's team for the past six years, described her "very cautious optimism" about their chances.

SPÁLGLEANN – Glytter's women's football team is preparing for tomorrow's semi-final match against Cheonhae. As they prepare, players and coaches remain confident. There is a growing sense of optimism among the players, whose sentiments were boosted as they eased to victory over Daaqi during Friday's quarter final match. Glytter bested Daaqi 2-0.

"We can win this" said Niamh Nic Cheallach, the team's principle goal-keeper. "We know we can, so we will".

She is one of the few players who have spoken to the press about the team's growing optimism. Some fans have taken to calling Nic Cheallach the gate-keeper for her performance during the games so far.

Glytter's women's team has had a long history of success at the Invictus Games but was disappointed during the 2014 Gatôn Games when they placed fourth, failing to win a medal. With the games in Glytter, they now hope for the ultimate home field advantage.

The team's coach, Síle Ní Ríain, told reporters she had feelings of a "very cautious optimism" but said it was best for the team to remain in the mindset that they can still lose. "The second we convince ourselves its ours is the second we become vulnerable enough to lose" she said.

She praised the dedication of the players, saying that "they have really given it all. No matter how far we get in this, we have a lot to be proud of".

Ní Ríain has coached the team for just over six years now, starting in 2012. She led the team during their defeat in 2014. "It was disappointing of course, but it just wasn't our year" she said. "What mattered was we had found our strengths as a team, as a young time might I add at that. For many of my players that was their first Invictus. They're veterans now and have played together for far longer. They've really grown as a team since then".

The match is set to take place at Spálgleann's Sovereign's Stadium at 13:00 EST. Thousands of fans are expected to attend while over a million are expected to watch it live.

The winner of the match will go on to face either Nematsu or Tirona in the gold medal match while loser will compete for the bronze. These two matches are set to take place on Friday, the day before the men's football tournament's close.

Internationally, the focus is primarily on the men's tournament, but in Glytter it is on the women's matches. Women's football is dominant in Glytter, with more fans and viewers than the men's league. This is due in part to a national strategy to excel in women's competitions at the Invictus Games to increase Glytter's overall medal count. Glytter, a small nation of just over nine million, struggles to compete with much larger nations in men's sports, where it traditionally dedicates fewer resources.

Attempts to change this status quo have been made. Prince John, the Earl of Corofin, brought national interest to men's league after he became a professional footballer. The surprise performance of the Glytteronian team at the last World Cup brought new interest to men's football. It was hoped the Glytteronian men's team would perform well in the men's tournament, but they failed to build a momentum and were eliminated before the knock-out stage.

Zacharie Messier
10th August 2018
Millennium Stadium

For Zacharie the intense lights, the cameras, the horde of people sat around him in high viewing seats as if he were a gladiator of old, made him uncomfortable.

Thoughts darted across his mind. How the spectators weren’t really here to see him, nay. He could dazzle the crowds and please them all, but the thought that niggled him greatly was that of his… circumstance here.

Adrien, his friend, his mentor, deserved to be here. Battling with all his grace and demeanour to earn that third gold medal he had so desired for.

And yet that dream burnt with the wreckage of the vehicle.

He shouldn’t have been here. He should have thrown in the towel. But he couldn’t.

What would Adrien have said? What would Gaullica have thought? What would the Vredlandian had thought?

He couldn’t let them all down, not now.

His grip tightened on the hilt of the blade and his feet pressed firmly into the piste. He breathed in, calmly, yet angrily — through grit teeth.

Zacharie was not sure if he could win, nor if he could even compete — but he would try with all the strength he could muster.

An intense stare, an unwavering stare, through those masks of theirs. He could feel the pressure mounting.

How would he do this, he pondered. Adrien had astounded all; executing a Zornhau. Which now ruled it out. He’d need to get inventive, unorthodox. Or perhaps entrench himself in fencing orthodoxy.

___________________________________________________________________

Gabriel breathed heavily. He didn’t know the Gaullican well, indeed they had only ever met at tournaments, but the sudden death of his rival shook him to his core.

Gabriel thought he had seen the best of his career already, but after his initial success at these Invictus Games, he was determined to still continue his career until about 2022. He wasn’t the youngest anymore, but he didn’t think he was old enough to settle down yet. The death of that bright star Adrien made him completely reverse his view, however.

Gabriel could take the job as lecturer at the National Institute for Physical Education that he was offered, something to do until he eventually retired in his 60s. He’d be closer to his wife; maybe they could still have that second child she so dearly wished for.

This current life, from tournament to tournament, what would it mean to him or frankly anyone if it was to end suddenly? Would his daughter rejoice his medals or regret the time the two of them missed because he was away earning them?

Gabriel grabbed the hilt of his blade tightly. It slightly reflected the different lights around them, he noticed. Almost peacefully, in the midst of all this chaos.

The Gaullican across Gabriel stood there seemingly determined and collected. Gabriel admired that. Any other day, he surely would have enjoyed a dance of their blades. Today, he only wanted to get this over with. To win.

——————————————————————————

Zacharie inhaled sharply, watching as the referee, the adjudicator of this duel, moved to the centre of the piste.

He brought an arm down in a chopping motion, signalling the beginning of the end of the Invictus’ games the épée tournament.

“Allez! En garde!” he called, angrily, and leapt into a ferocious forward lunge.

Gabriel was no slouch, of course, and quickly stepped back. His heels were well beyond the demarcation line behind him and with quick flick of the wrist brought his blade to bear in a block, but a misjudgement on behalf of his own footing failed to capitulate it into a parry.

The Gaullican now took his chance to step back, letting himself into a defensive posture that mimicked the opening style of his friend. His grip on the handle never wavered, and he held it so that the forte of the blade was elevated over its button.

He struck again. He was not sure if it was in desperation, anxiety or if he had a plan indeed.

A quick strike upwards, that’s all it was. Gabriel raised his blade, careful with his posture, and shoulder poised himself into a perfect parry position.

For a strike that did not come.

Within the machinations of the young Gaullican’s mind; a feint was not what he had intended — yet it had happened all the same.

An audible gasp escaped the onlookers as Zacharie took the blade down and pressed the button end into the calf of his opponent.

There was a silence that seemed to last for an eternity. The warriors stood, the button pressed into the white trousers worn by all goodly duellists.

Throughout it all, even from behind the mask, Zacharie could have sworn he heard a short chuckle. This was followed by an approving, accented, Gaullican; “J’aurai tout vu!” What a compliment!

The referee stepped forward and waved his arms in a short and decisive cross. Both fighters scampered back to their lines and Zacharie felt such elation and pride in himself he could’ve exploded in joy at that very moment.

But he kept his cool.

At least he would not be returning home having been completely bested.

This the Vredlandian was first to act, calling out the necessary remarks as had been done before. A hearty “Allez!” and a knightly “En garde!”

Gabriel moved forward like the wind, strike, strike, strike, in a monumental run up assault.

Dodge, dodge, parry was the style of the defending Gaullican. Yet the Vredlandian did not falter and executed a fantastic footwork, bringing his back foot forward in a combination fléche and an appel.

A loud thud filled the stadium and Zacharie, disoriented, missed the retaliatory strike launched against him that caused Gabriel’s épée to prod his white jacket in his midrif.

1-1

The beginning of the end, Zacharie swallowed as he stepped back towards his starting point at the ref’s call.

——————————————————————————

A clash of the titans.

A clash that should not have happened.

The Gaullican fencer wept, wept in sadness.

His arm raised by the referee, a standing applause given by the audience. A clash on the back, an embrace by Gabriel.

Gold. He had done it, through some pulling of the strings by higher powers.

What had been a tie with a point each had turned into a lead in favour of the Vredlandian, following up his point by executing a fantastic feint led parry that caught the Gaullican in his jaw.

Yet Zacharie had struck back, after a heavy duel of blocks and parries gave him the chance to feint an overhead strike into a successful thrust that the Vredlandian had failed to dodge, the button of the blade pressing into his left arm.

The final point was, oddly, not as illustrious. A fast paced encounter, with stomping and screaming as the competitors battled it for honour, for pride, for country. And in Zacharie’s mind, for Adrien.

This gold would not be his. Never. He had won this for his mentor and friend.

And as he removed his mask to well in the adoration of the onlookers, the the tears that had welled up in his eyes let themselves down onto his cheeks.

The victor was smiling down at him, he knew.

Three days left of Invictus Games

Atuvja Valuda, silver medal winner in ice skating for Rhakhataa

2018-08-17 09:05 RHT

There are just three days left until the end of the 2018 Summer Invictus Games, held in Spálgleann, Glytter. Though they come every four years, we are all always sad to see them go; there is something rousing about celebrating achievement and country and health with the rest of the world. Though the final countdown has begun, and though there are still events to be run, here are some of our highlights.

· The fireworks of the Opening Ceremony were as flashy as always, of course. The performance of No Direction was apparently a particularly popular favourite amongst Rhakhese viewers.

· Who could forget the stunning performance of Rhuvaal Tuvala in the women's archery? Reportedly, she was given the damaged arrows to keep as a memento, though no doubt the gold medal is as appreciated.

· The performance of twins Tuvar and Khabar Porhobas, first-time Invictians at only eighteen years old, was admirable. They competed in the rhythmic gymnastics, each scoring a medal.

· The 1500 m men's freestyle was an event to behold; the video, available here, shows you just how unexpected and surprising the catch-up from behind was. The swimmer, Tarvulaa Okjatu, is known for being one of the tallest Invictians on the Rhakhese team, at just shy of two metres.

· Though not strictly a sporting event, the crowd was appreciative of the little tabby cat that kept alongside teams in the slalom canoeing, including the Rhakhese one (who came just shy of a medal).

Those following the games are reminded to take breaks and stay hydrated after long periods of watching, and to keep to safe, sober, indoors revels.

Our next update on the Games will be a summary, upon the Closing Ceremony.

GLYTTER BESTS NEMATSU TO CLINCH GOLD FOR WOMEN'S FOOTBALL
Dramatic game sees Glytter's women's team win gold medal match as nation erupts in celebration

Glytter secured a gold medal after beating Nematsu 2-1.

SPÁLGLEANN – Glytter's women's team has won the gold model in the women's football tournament. They beat Nematsu 2-1 after a dramatic game that was stuck in a deadlock until Glytteronian striker Caitlín Nic Dhiarmaid scored a goal three minutes before the game was set to go into overtime.

Órla Nic an t-Saoir scored Glytter's first goal, which was followed by Nematsu's goal at around the 43 minute mark.

Women's football has only been featured at the Invictus Games six times, starting in 1998 as part of the celebration of the Games' centennial.

Glytter's women's team has had a long history of success at the Invictus Games but was disappointed during the 2014 Gatôn Games when they placed fourth, failing to win a medal. With the games in Glytter, they now hope for the ultimate home field advantage.

This is the Glytteronian team's third gold medal in women's football, having made it to the final four each year it was featured and winning medals four of the six.

Glytter beat Cheonhae 1-0 on Tuesday and advanced to the final stage. Cheonhae and Tirona are set to play for the bronze later today at 16:00 EST.

There was much celebration throughout Glytter in the wake of the victory. His Majesty King Kenneth and a number of the Royal Family were in attendance during the match, in additional to a host of government officials and Glytteronian celebrities. The national anthem was sung by many in the crowd during the podium ceremony. The festivities were not limited to Sovereign's Stadium, however. Thousands of fans throughout the country celebrated in pubs and many took to the streets in celebration.

It was hoped the Glytteronian men's team would perform well in the men's tournament this year, but they failed to build a momentum and were eliminated before the knock-out stage.

The men's gold medal final takes place at 13:00 EST tomorrow at Sovereign's Stadium. Gaullica and Satucin will face off for the gold and silver while Estmere and the Federation will play for bronze at 16:00 EST.

The closing ceremonies for the 30th Invictus Games are set to take place this Sunday at Millennium Stadium.
