The Nation Formerly Known As Ibex
A tale of splinter states that spans the cosmos.

Part 3: Ibex of The Alliance of Dictators

Just as it seemed all-out war between a heavily militarized Ibex and a Karditani starving for the resources they had been denied for decades, an agreement was struck. Denizens of both nations were shocked to hear the Karditani Prime Ministers and Emperor Shang Lér--the latest of a long line of short-lived Ibex dictators--had even made any sort of communication at all, never mind the peaceful and agreeable sort. While the Karditanis didn’t know how it happened, the Ibex had been exposed to the broader multiverse, and unsurprisingly found it a lot more inviting than their current neighborhood. That was the work of one Ivory Hilt, a Vashameer freedom fighter who also happened to play right back for the Karditani “national” soccer team that claimed silver in Baptism of Fire 46 and qualified for World Cup 63. It was those experiences abroad that hatched the plan in him--and several of his wealthy Karditani compatriots on that team--to hatch a plan.

Ibex would make use of a superlogistics company, a sort of mass land transportation service that has developed a thriving industry in response to multiversal needs, to relocate the entire nation to a different region. Entirely on the dime of some of those Karditani elites, of course--those sort of services do not come cheaply, and Ibex’s national coffers weren’t very deep due to difficulty finding regular trade partners. You might be wonder why they would burn so much money on an initiaitive like that, and the answer was simple: Only the minimum amount of ground necessary to keep Ibex intact would be transported, leaving almost all the resources ready to be harvested out the massive, fresh crater. The Ibex get their freedom and their choice of where to make their future, and the Karditani industrial juggernaut grows even stronger--it seemed like a win-win for both sides, and for many years it played out that way with both nations seeing unparallelled prosperity.

Of course, when the fleets of helicopters come to lift up an entire nation, they need a destination to take it too. That decision was quickly made as Shang Lér flipped through catalogs of potential regions, one early in the list catching his eye with a magnificent name: the Alliance of Dictators. The Alliance was a curious place, featuring some of the most starkly diverse peoples and cultures you might ever see in a singular region--ponies, many sects of humans, squids, androids, anything you can think to name. And they were all brought together through the common goal of eliminating the very concept of a vote.

With the relief from the constant border conflicts, Shang Lér consolidated his power even further and properly turned the Rogue State of Ibex into the Empire of Ibex, ruling peerless throughout the sands. The economy and the church, oft inseperable, flourished under the peace and prosperous trade routes with the neighboring Valcouria and Changeling Empire. A solid report was struck up with the enigmatic leaders of the region, and good times were had.

If you were one of the elite, of course. Conditions for the average Ibex kept finding more and more ways to become even more deplorable, recording unbelievably low metrics on World Assembly surveys like average life expectancy (<20 years) and development index. The populace were poorly educated, sick, and living in an inhospitable wasteland. If it weren't for regular shipments of foodstuffs from Valcouria the burgeoning population would have plunged into a devastating famine. The nation lived in this limbo of being internationally well-connected, for once not being a pariah, while domestic matters that didn't relate to pure profit was in shambles. It wasn't sustainable, and as Shang Lér started to grow old that fact became apparent to him. But he'd already laid a nefarious trap for himself--the corruption of everything in Ibex's power structure was so complete and incestuously connected that there was no plan of attack to attempt dismantling it. The best he could settle for sneaking orders past other church officials that could provide comforts to the denizens--a wider variety of foods available, less frequent not-so-secret police patrols and raids, directing industrial dumping a little further away from population centers for many enumerated reasons that certainly didn't have to do with protecting the health of those in the nearby slums, of course not that's ridiculous.

Eventually, the Emperor realized that no reform could ever truly happen while the nation had its roots implanted so deeply in the Alliance, which despite not having an official stance on non-political-rights issues housed many other nations that sought nothing more than to grind their citizens to dust for any reason they can grasp for. And so for the second time a search was called on to find Ibex a new home, and once again hoofball would play an unlikely role.

Sorry to be getting this part out to you all a bit late--I got a good bit of writing done through the first half of the Siovanija & Teusland match, but then the second half... actually resembled hoofball? I was caught completely unawares by that, I have to admit. Vezina actually passed forward a few times, and was still able to hold when the ball came back the other way! Until they brought on that Ribbeck lad, of course. Even though we ended up losing I was just glad to see us trying to score, even if our one actual goal ended up just being Azucena taking the entire team on her back for ten seconds. We're never going to win anything if we have to rely on plays like that. Though we're playing Cosumar next anyway, so we were never going to win to begin with. Enjoy the fireworks!

A look at how the Vilitan & Turorian projections for the AOCAF 56 Group Stage in the Equestrian States are ended up looking at the conclusion of the Group Stage...

Group A
Prediction: Equestrian States, Banija

No drama here. The Sport Report was dead-on-balls accurate with this projection as the hosts Equestrian States defeated Banija 2-0 on the final matchday of group play to take top spot in the group that was otherwise all decided headed into the final matchday.

Group B
Prediction: Tropicorp, Ko-oren

It would have taken an upset defeat for the Sultanate of Oontaz against Freeport on the final matchday of Group Play in order for this projection to have had a chance at coming true but unfortunately it was Tropicorp left on the short end of the stick as AOCAF 50 runners-up Ko-oren defeated the Techi-bo's 3-2 marking an early end of Tropicorp's participation in AOCAF 56. After two consecutive appearances at the Quarter Final stage or later, coming away without advancing to play additional games after the Group Stage will be a major let down for the Scientists, Researchers and Engineers of Tropicorp. The three group stage matches contested are the fewest ever played by Tropicorp in a single competition meaning that the Tropicorp Tech team will have minimal data to use for their studies.

Group C
Prediction: Vilita & Turori, Mriin

The Eel-Cat things needed a win on the final matchday to take top spot in the group. Unfortunately, despite defeating Mriin 3-2 on the final matchday, a victory by Saint Emelie over South Toronto meant that the results of a three way tie between the teams left Mriin atop the pack. In the end, Sport Report had the right teams projected to advance from Group C but in the wrong order with Vilita & Turori drawing the short end of the stick as runner up.

Vilita & Turori [3] - [2] Mriin

It was a pair of goals from Mbdiai Akarenaa that gave the Eel-Cat things the lead after an early goal put Mriin ahead. Daliora Toru'u added what appeared to be an insurance goal in the 75th minute until Mriin responded again and made Toru'u tally the game winner with Vernasa Sanamun - the Kiiarana City netminder who came in for Wiyauw An'maude at half time - held strong to keep the Eel-Cat Things narrow advantage over the final 10 minutes.

Vilita & Turori Eel Cat Things Lineup v. Mriin ::
[GK] Wiyauw An'maude, [D.] Mikki Mayelli, [D.] Biliki Rona'atu'i, [D.] Yitizo Mpala'a, [D.] Rojara Tiones, [ML] Mbdiai Akarenaa, [MC] Limu Katarakhna, [MC] Daliora Toru'u, [MR] Kentu Umaka'a, [FC] Meldi'ita Mungwaii, [FC] Nii'arala Milaaso
BENCH::
[FC] Wiztsana Iretziia, [FC] Enzoril Alabonni, [M] Kudii Davasarii, [M] Kiidallen Aeroluzzi, [U ] Dmitri Levada, [D] Jirak Trikala, [GK] Vernasa Sanamun

Group D
Prediction: Cosumar, Siovanija & Teusland

The reward for drawing the short end of the Group C stick for Vilita & Turori would be a matchup with the Group D winners. Despite dropping a shock 2-1 result to Novo Calania at the City of Manechester Stadium on the final matchday, Cosumar still had amassed a massive goal differential that, along with their head to head victory over Siovanija and Teusland, ensured that they would claim the top spot in the group over the overachieving but totally 100% predicted by Sport Report runners-up Siovanija & Teusland.

Group E
Prediction: Eshan, Torisakia

While Sport Report had already swung and miss with thier projection of Torisakia to advance from Group E, top spot was still on the line and Eshan emphatically triumphed with the top spot on the line laying down a five-star performance over Anthor at the Crystopolis Coliseum in Crystopolis. As for Torisakia, a 2-1 defeat to Melbergia left Torisakia bottom of the group without a single point. Oh well - At least Sport Report got it half right.

Group F

Prediction: Farfadillis, 95X

In Group F, Sport Report very nearly got things right. With a 5-4 victory over Semarland, Farfadillis took the top spot in the group just as predicted by Sport Report. In the end things in Group F went down the line 9-6-3-0 and it was Semarland's victory over 95X that made the difference and put them in the knockout rounds and sent 95X packing with an early bus ticket home.

Group G

Prediction: Demot, Baker Park

Like Group F, Sport Report nearly got this one called correctly as both Demot and Baker Park finished level top of the Group G standings on six points. Unfortunately, however, it was a three way tie at the top and Chromatika - whom Sport Report projected to finish outside the top two - won the goal differential tiebreaker for matches involving hte three tied clubs and as such topped the group pushing Demot back to second and Baker Park down to third and out of the competition.

Group H

Prediction: Starblaydia, Valanora

Sport Report ultimately got the teams in Group H right even if they came in the wrnog order. The difference came on the final matchday when Starblaydia handily took care of a Soltsteed side that had earlier in the competition held Valanora to a draw. Soltsteed were knocked out and Starblaydia would advance although doing so in the Runner-Up slot with Valanora on top.

Sport Report Round of 16 Predictions:

Equestrian States vs. Ko-oren
The hosts take on the Dragonflies in a matchup that could produce a Semi-Finalists to battle the winner of Chromatika-Starblaydia for a place in the final.

Mriin vs. Siovanija & Teusland
Mriin look to move up a tier into the upper echelon of Atlantian Oceania's regional competitors by advancing to the Quarter Finals over the unranked newcomers.

Eshan vs. Semarland
Eshan rolled Group E with minimal quality competition but may not survive this test - but it won't matter much as which ever team advances from this contest seems destined to lose in the Quarter Finals

Chromatika vs. Starblaydia
The highest ranked nation in their half of the draw, #3 Chromatika could roll the bracket if they can survive the challenge of #12 Starblaydia in the Round of 16.

Sultanate of Oontaz vs. Banija
The only match on the bottom half of the draw that does not feature a Top-5 nation, the draw provides a chance for one of these two to climb into the Top 10 of the AOCAF Rankings

Cosumar vs. Vilita & Turori
A clash between the current #2 nation in the region, Cosumar, and the historical #2 entity - Vilita & Turori. This one seems destined for extra time and the Eel-Cat Things most certainly won't want to be eliminated in the Round of 16 for the second consecutive campaign.

Farfadillis vs. Anthor
One of three matchups where 15+ ranking places exist between opponents in the Round of 16, this matchup is also likely the one that will provide the lowest odds in any betting circles. Farfadillis are less than even money already and very few bets are expected to come in for Anthor.

Valanora vs. Demot
A Clash between South Western mainstays - the five-time World Cup Champions versus the two-time World Cup Runners Up. As the top ranked side in the competition, Valanora will be looking to become five time regional champions as well while Demot will be looking to claim the scalp and the momentum that could propel them down the path of their first regional title.

The Dragonflies are victorious against regional powerhouses Tropicorp, and the upset drops Ko-oren in the Round of 16! The Equestrian States, hosts of the AOCAF, are our next opponent, in Ponyville.

This AOCAF's group stage has been brutal on some of the region's premier soccer nations. Often you will see one or two struggling favourites, or the occasional contender going home after the group matches, but this time there are some huge eliminations before the Round of 16. Tropicorp, ranked 7th, has been sent home on a Ko-orenite win in MD3, as you all know. Just below Tropicorp, we find Qasden, who have even failed to win a single match at all, a crushing blow to the 8th ranked nation. First they tie newcomers Novo Calania, then lose 6-1 to Cosumar, before losing by two goals to another unranked team, Siovanija and Teusland, who will move on to the second round. AOCAF giants, 95X, record just one win, on the third matchday, against Valliesta, and go home in third place after Farfadillis and Semarland.

Other behemoths of Atlantian Oceania make no mistake. The Equestrian States, Chromatika, Starblaydia, Cosumar, Vilita & Turori, Eshan, Farfadillis, and Valanora are all there as usual, though maybe a bit unbalanced from here on out: the Equestrian States, Chromatika, and Starblaydia are on one half of the bracket, and the other four are on the other side. Ko-oren haven't been part of this upper echelon for a while now, despite the one-time second place finish. At 27 in the rankings, the Dragonflies are the lowest ranked side still in the tournament.

Some Round of 16 matchups feature no immediate contenders, and we could see a surprise deep run from there: Mriin vs Siovanija & Teusland is such a game. The Sultanate of Oontaz versus Banija is another one. There are two games between the heavyweights: Chromatika vs Starblaydia and Cosumar vs Vilita & Turori.

Looking at the group stage, the Equestrian States are in excellent form to win the title in front of a home audience. At three wins, 10 goals scored and one conceded, they might as well be the tournament's top team, and that does not bode well for Ko-oren. Pristina Shine has been on unbelievable form this tournament, continuing her run from AOCAF LV, and scoring three goals on Sangti a match ago - in one half. Gentle Breeze has gone nearly unchallenged on goal so far, as well. Other teams that are pretty hot right now: Vilita and Turori's attack, Eshan and Farfadillis, both advancing with three victories from a tricky group, and Valanora, winning Group H and beating Starblaydia 3-1 in the process.

The Dragonflies are not looking so bad themselves, given the situation before this AOCAF, and it is very reassuring to know that this squad, with such a young core, is competitive enough to make it out of the group. The 3-2 victory over Tropicorp, despite the two conceded goals, was a match more or less how Juliasterinthen would have wanted to see it. On top of that, Duchemin managed to score Ko-oren's first hattrick since two World Cup qualifications ago - Duchemin's first goals for the Green-and-Blue. Overall, no single player is going through a sub-par spell right now, and the results show that. All players are performing about as well as expected, and research shows that having no weak points outweighs having a few big stars on the team, and it seems Juliasterinthen has shaped the squad accordingly. Theshendan and Kapitein are playing excellent football, but the wing backs, as expected, are the weakest links - and surely something that the Equestrian States will try to exploit. Up front, Duchemin and Pirastadhaunden have been very solid, but never great.

The trio from Tanques, one of the teams in the Ko-orenite top flight, has carried the offensive side of the team so far, as expected. Antoine Duchemin has taken care of goals now, while Longchambon has been instrumental in holding the ball up front and distributing it, and Samuel Ulysse has been a very decent holding midfielder so far. Can you believe the oldest of the three, Ulysse, is only 24? If Tanques can hold on to all three, they should be heading towards a golden age in the Ko-orenite Top League.

KNOCKOUT
By Narciso Abdulmalik Talavera

Now that was very painful for the heart to watch.

The Lions of Sand and Sea never ceases to amaze with their ability to induce heart attacks on the general populace of the Sultanate. I imagine that the hospitals are still filled with patients seeking treatment for last night's game.

Twice the Lions took the lead against Freeport, and twice the Condottieri leveled things up. But the Condottieri couldn't have imagined that the Lions would be able to take the lead for a third time against them.

But imagine a world though where Marco Portenco missed that header in the last minute of the game.

We would be talking about how it was such a shameful display for the Lions of Sand and Sea to draw 2-2 against an unranked team, and that it was typically Oontaznik for our team to be eliminated in the group stage of the AOCAF Cup on head-to-head results.

But we are living in a world where Oontaz has indeed advanced to the next stage of the AOCAF Cup.

And the Kadongo Kamu of the Kingdom of Banija stands in the way of a quarterfinals appearance.

The Sultanate versus the Kingdom. There can only be one victor.

Martell Chalobah winced as Faragó rue Cazade left him for dead. The young Farf substitute definitely had more pace than him and he'd been troubling him all throughout the second half. It took a fairly bad tackle, which resulted in a yellow card, to stop him from crossing it into the path of Xíxì Êns earlier, but this time there was nothing Martell could do, as rue Cazade placed it past Stephane Claro-Hunt to make it 5-4 to Farfadillis. There was 7 minutes left and Martell signalled to the bench that he had to come off. On came Cyril Ansah and Martell hobbled over to where the other substitutes were. It wasn't entirely his fault that Semarland had conceded another five goals. Amani Chimbonda looked shakey and even Djair Claro-Hunt was off the pace with Lázár Eleonóra having a field day. It was really the work of Fôrté Wínrôuge that led to Semarland's undoing though. The 34 year old was nothing short of mercurious in today's game.

Martell shook his head as Reiss Claro-Hunt squandered a chance for his hat-trick. He made a good impact, in fairness, scoring twice and setting up Yohannes Melbourne to follow up Seyi Oshoffa's first half opener, but it was the goals from Wínrôuge, Êns twice, Marchiondo and now rue Cazade that made the difference. He swore as the final whistle went just after Cyril headed over the bar from a corner. Even if they drew they'd still have finished second, but if those two last chances were put away they'd have finished top of the group and had a fairly easier draw. Back in the dressing room there was discussion about the Echani form, who had walked through their group without a scratch, pretty much. Sure, it was a relatively easy set of fixtures but Martell and his colleagues would probably have rather faced Anthor, that's for certain.

But the game against Eshan in a few days time was the least of Martell's worries. They were leaving for Manechester in a few days time and there was still no sign of Kwame. Kadell had pulled him to the side a few hours before the game and explained the situation to him. Martell kept calm but he had to admit, there were moments in the game where his mind wandered to what had happened to Kwame. Switching on the TV in his hotel room, he cursed as the local media had already got onto the fact Kwame was AWOL. Back home there was probably an even bigger meltdown. More a case of "is he okay?" than "we're fucked" though, thankfully. Kadell had just told him to sleep on it, he would reach out to Kwame in the morning and that would hopefully garner a response. But for now, he wasn't sure.

Kadongo Kamu fall 2-0 to the Equestrian States; to face the Sultanate of Oontaz in the Round of 16

Image
National team applauds travelling fans following group stage loss to the Equestrian States

CANTERLOT, EQUESTRIAN STATES- Fortunately for the Banijans, everything was long settled in terms of their progression to the Round of 16. In their third meeting in Banija's last four major tournaments, the Equestrian States once again triumphed over the Kadongo Kamu- the 2-0 scoreline to the hosts telling it all. It was a game where Banija fought fiercely, where both teams, even with both of them having clinched spots in the knockout stages, fought ferociously with each other for the right to be called the winners of Group A, and more importantly, to get bragging rights in what is certainly becoming an extremely fierce rivalry in the Glorious Southwest. The match was always going to be tough- at the same site as the opening match of World Cup 80, well over 90,000 fans packed the stadium to see whether who could declare themselves as the top dog in Group A, and take that momentum into the knockout stages.

The Banijans followed a similar strategy to what we expected. Their only change from their regular, listed starting lineup heading into the tournament was Jumu Sanneh in net, and Samba Ndaw starting in the central midfield for Isaac Georgiadis. That change alone was an indication that the Banijans would go for a tried and true strategy- the strategy where the defense would focus on Pristina Shine, where the defense would play extremely physical with her. This earned the Banijans six yellow cards in the last matchup between these two squads, a heavy number of yellows, but, of course, it is different in the first game of the group stage. With Georgiadis the only player carrying a yellow at this point, they chose to sit him for the game, to ensure that he wouldn't get another yellow in this game so that, no matter who the Banijans faced in the knockout stages, they could play with a full strength team.

The Equestrian States, normally slow to start, were flying off the ball to start the game. An electric atmosphere, playing at home, the Equestrian States wanted to win this game and cement their dominance in this physical rivalry matchup. An early chance in the 3rd minute fell to Apple Cobbler, who struck the ball well but it was easily tipped over the back of the net by Jumu Sanneh for a corner ,who then caught the ensuing corner kick. But it sent an early message- the Equestrian States was ready to play, and they were here to win. And it didn't take that much longer for the Equestrian States to take an early lead against the Banijans. In a spell of possesion in the seventh, a ball was played to Pristina Shine, in a holding, #9 position, about 35 yards from goal. She came and got the ball, and three Banijans converged onto the ball, with Wasa Jawo coming from behind and knocking her down. As she was falling, however, she passed the ball to a streaking Rainbow Blitz, who got the ball, and quickly passed to Rosewing, who was originally being marked by Jawo, but was now wide open at the 18. Held onside by Berhanu, she turned and blasted the ball into the lower right hand corner, a perfect finish where Sanneh had no chance to get there. And just like that, just 7 minutes in, the Equestrians led by a score of 1-0.

She ran to the corner flag to celebrate, as the Banijans stood around and looked on. They didn't want to concede such an early goal- the Equestrians are strong in defense, and having one of the multiverse's best goalkeepers in Gentle Breeze, it was going to be a tall order for the Banijans to try and come back. And yet, they did. They couldn't push tons of numbers forward- the Equestrians are known for their devastating ability to counter, as they showed against Sangti in their last group stage game. So they passed the ball around the midfield, and attempted various ways to cut through the defense. One of the most successful ones was on a chip behind the defense, with Gitonga Kahara racing past Brix Hamilton, as he volleyed a shot towards goal. However, Gentle Breeze had came out, and made a spectacular save, as she dove to her left to knock the ball out for a corner kick.

Meanwhile, throughout this game, Banija's defensive strategy was going to work on the Equestrians. Wasa Jawo picked up a yellow card in the 29th minute, for a particularly rough slide tackle on Pristina Shine. Daniel Asres picked up a yellow card in the 34th minute. His was more of a tactical foul, as following a Banijan corner, Rainbow Blitz was off to the races with numbers at midfield, and a clear wrap, that nearly looked like a gridiron football tackle, earned him a yellow card, which saw many Equestrians complaining and asking for a red card. Early in the second half, however, there was a particularly rough foul when Alifa Diawara kicked out at the ankles of Pristina Shine, which saw many Equestrian players surround the referee in anger when he gave her a yellow. Pristina Shine, of course, played on.

The Equestrians were angry enough at everything that was being given to Pristina Shine, and Andrea Molovi took matters into her own hands. Alifa Diawara was racing up the field on a counter attack for himself, when Molovi came in late for a particularly rough slide tackle. It was clear tensions, at this point, were beginning to flair. There was what looked like a mad rush to the ball, as tempers were clearly flairing between the two teams. The pair of captains, Cloudchaser and Chibuzo Afolayan, were in a shouting match. There were almost 10 players in the referee's face, with Banijans yelling of an intentional dangerous play, while Equestrians were enraged as well. And, of course, it looked like there was some pushing and shoving as well. After the referee decided not to use the Video Assistant Referee, only Molovi was given a yellow for the original foul, and everyone else involved in the pushing and shoving was not.

The temperature for this game was slowly rising, with arguments breaking out between Equestrian players and Banijan players. In the 68th minute, however, it would all come to a head. Daniel Asres was chasing down Pristina Shine from behind, and launched a slide tackle where he clearly through her legs. With him already on a yellow card, Equestrian players ran up to the referee, demanding a second yellow be shown. Asres looked up, knowing what would happen- like his other yellow card, the foul was clear and obvious. A second yellow was shown to the central midfielder, which meant that the referee then proceeded to show him a red card. He was sent off- as he made the walk back to the bench, with his head down, leaving Banija short a man for the remainder of the match, and knowing he'll be out for the Round of 16 as well.

At that point, the Banijans really had to stretch themselves. Down 1-0, with 20 minutes to go, and down to 10 men, against this goalkeeper? This would be a tall order. The Banijans were pushing, wanting to at least get a result- they wouldn't win the group with a draw, of course, but for pride- finally improving against their strongest rivals. But it was not meant to be. In the 82nd minute, an interception from Rainbow Blitz saw the Equestrians race down the field against the stretched, tired Banijan legs. Hitting Apple Cobbler down the flank, she raced, beating the Banijan defender, and sending a beautiful, curling ball into the box. Pristina Shine raced past Wasa Jawo, the ball bounced once and she shot a powerful volley, which went past Jumu Sanneh for the team's second goal.

That was the ball game. There wasn't much in the last 10 minutes, though in the 88th minute, Jumu Sanneh fumbled a cross to almost allow the Equestrians to score a third, though Aaron Aiza blasted the bouncing ball high above the empty net. The final score was 2-0, a well deserved win for the hosts. Both teams were through to the knockout stages of course- but in the third major tournament rendition of this rivalry, it was once again the Equestrian States, rather than the Banijans, who would triumph.

Now, of course, is the time to turn to the Round of 16, and focus on Banija's opponent here- the Sultante of Oontaz. You may remember them from AOCAF LV, when Banija beat them in a winner take all game in their final group stage match last time out, to clinch a berth for themselves in the Round of 16 last time round. And now they will face each other again, but with much, much higher stakes- a spot in the quarterfinals. Somewhere where Banija had a magical run to in AOCAF LV, it was always going to be the benchmark for success for the Banijans in this tournament. Can they do it? Do they have it in them to win this game, without Daniel Asres, who is suspended, participating in the festivities? The Lions of Sand and Sea won Group B by also winning two games, and are ranked a few places ahead of the Banijans in the AOCAF ranking system.

A few players might be familiar to those who follow Isaac Georgiadis, who plays for Riuwee United in the Fleftic Premier League. His club teammate, 32 year old outside midfielder Haider Zulfikar, is a starter for the Oontaz national team. That itself will be interesting and fascinating to see, as it is the second straight matchup for Banija where club teammates face off(3/4s of the Banijan back line and Aaron Aiza for the Equestrian States, all of Herzegovina City FC in the BSL, played in their latest group stage matchup). But can the Banijans wins this game? Oontaz won their group for a reason. Winning their opener against Ko-oren by a score of 2-1, and their last game in dramatic fashion with an 87th minute header, they are able to grind out some extremely tough victories.

They are not afraid, also, to hold the ball. Each matchup they had, the possesion was 51-49, twice in favor of the opponents, once in their own favor. And against Freeport, the newcomers, they managed 12 shots on target- they will come after you. How do you beat this team then? You limit their offense. Look at their 2-0 loss against Tropicorp. Only managing 2 shots the entire 90 minutes, they could not get any sort of a rhythm going. That's what the Banijans will have to do- they'll have to look to dominate possesion, look to go forward, and ensure that they control they tempo. They are certainly capable of winning this game, of course, but it'll be a tough matchup, almost a coin toss- one of the most exciting matchups that this Round of 16 will have to offer.

Who will be the difference makers? Well, for Banija, you'll have to expect the front three to step up. The attacking trio of Toyuwa Okafor, Gitonga Kahara, and Chibuzo Afolayan are Banija's best hope. They were suffocated against the Equestrian States- couldn't create space, could not not dribble, could not get good looks on goal. But it'll be up to them to find a way to improve against the Sultanate of Oontaz. If they can do so, the Banijans can score, and if the Banijans can score early, then things are going well. But if it goes like it did in the last two group stage games- Banijans constantly frustrated, can't get past the defenders, can't get good shots on target, then Oontaz will be in for a good day. Another key will be in net. Assefa Berhane is set to start the Round of 16 after not playing in the last two matches, after Sanneh's near howler against the Equestrian States. Can the Banijans find a goalkeeper? A question that must be answered as the knockout stages begin and the stakes continue to get higher.

We won't offer a prediction of the result- however, we will say this. There will be plenty of Banijans at the stadium, as fans look forward to the chance of seeing the team play a knockout stage game for the second straight AOCAF in a row. Regardless of that, if the team is ready, both physically and mentally, and Samba Ndaw steps up to replace the suspended Daniel Asres, then the national team is certainly capable of anything in Trottawa.

Commonwealth victorious, but fall short at AOCAF

Frank Armitage
Daily Mail Chief Soccer Writer

Reporting from Cloudsdale, Equestria:

The overwhelming mood that pervaded the Sky-High Coliseum here, at the conclusion of the Commonwealth's 4-3 victory over the Busoga Islands--a historic 200th international victory that should've been a celebration--was akin to the loss of a loved one. Manager Pamela Scott didn't show for the post match press conference, which allowed the assistant manager of the Busoga Islands squad, Yamma Mbye--who is also the newly appointed youth development director--to have the opportunity to discuss the significance of the Islanders appearance here, the embryonic relationship between the Busogan FA and the FAC as well as between the governments as well.

"We are honored to have been able to face the Commonwealth of Baker Park tonight; from the very beginning of the drought crisis in Banija, it was Baker Park who defied the restrictions of Mattias Mutebi to bring relief directly to the islands. We shall always remember that effort, and pray that we will always be considered a friend of Baker Park."

As to the discussion of the match, Mbye was positive that the third time out for the squad contributed to the positive outcome for the Busogans. "We did not expect that the match would be easy and it was a fiercely fought contest; we seemed to have a great deal more confidence in situations than we did in the first two matches. I don't believe we will go home happy that we prevented the Baker Park side from advancing, and I don't feel that the gestures and goodwill displayed on the pitch by the BP team at the end of the match were less than genuine respect and sportsmanship."

Scott made a deliberate show of respect when she appeared on the podium at the conclusion of Mbye's remarks, but clearly had a difficult time disguising her disappointment.

"I apologize to the AOCAF and the Equestrian Hoofball Association for violating the rules; I've never actually experienced a match where we've won on the scoreboard but not gotten the end result.
I know how those people in Qasden felt after the second stage of the playoff.
For our first time in this competition, I think we have held our own, and I want to send my congratulations to both Chromatika and Demot."

Scott paid respect to the opponents and understood the wider ramifications of the match. "I think the Busogans made a credible start to their multiverse experience as an independent nation. I'm happy the squads were able to join together for a photo to express our solidarity with the Islands."

The National side will now have an extended break before the beginning of qualifying for World Cup 81.

LATE EDITION -- SPORTS

GOLDHORNS ADVANCE IN AOCAF UPSET

It was a night to remember for fans of Siovanija and Teusland, as they defeated Qasden 4-2 to advance to the Round of 16 at AOCAF Cup LVI.

Much of the build-up surrounding the match for the Goldhorns centred on the fact that this match was arguably one of the most important in the team’s short history. A win would see the Goldhorns reach the play-off stage of a major international tournament for the first time ever, and for the first time overall since the Baptism of Fire. Qualification wasn’t just on the line for the Goldhorns either, as with a win Qasden would advance as well after a rocky start to their campaign. Truly, the stakes were high for this one.

And that was an area of concern for Siovanija and Teusland. So far in the history of this football team, it’s fair to say they haven’t always shown up for the biggest games. At Baptism of Fire 67, the Goldhorns were seeded 1st of all play-off teams, yet found themselves eliminated at the Quarterfinal stage. At Cup of Harmony 72, Siovanija and Teusland found themselves able to advance to the play-offs with a win over the Alpine Union, but threw away a 2-1 lead late to draw and be eliminated. Pundits and fans have since had one question on their minds: Are we bottlers? Getting a result against Qasden would do much to get rid of the particular piece of speculation.

On paper, however, one would not consider the Goldhorns favourites for the match. Qasden are ranked 8th in the Atlantian Oceania. Only on form would Siovanija and Teusland be considered likely to win this match, and even then only slightly. Qasden had been held to a draw with Novo Calania before getting blown out by Cosumar 6-1. The Goldhorns had also been blown out by Cosumar, 4-0, but instead defeated Novo Calania 2-1. Still, Qasden are a side with a lot of quality and the match was certainly going to be a difficult challenge for Siovanija and Teusland.

The Goldhorns entered the match with a few changes to the lineup from the win over Novo Calania. Paulus Leistner, who had picked up a knock in the second half, missed out. “With Paulus, it’s not too bad of an injury but we want to be cautious, there’s no point risking him aggravating it further when we have quality in this team to replace him. He will be available for selection if we should reach the Round of 16,” commented Alan Dzekov. Lutz von Bergen replaced him in the lineup, while on the front line, Michael Ribbeck came in in place of Miro Dinev. “Michael is just on an unbelievable patch of form at the moment, and we’re going to milk it for all we can.” The forward has 3 goals in his last two appearances, including one at the AOCAF against Novo Calania.

Kicking off the all-important matchday three fixture, you could tell from the very beginning that it would be a battle. Both sides were into the match from the get go, with a quick tempo immediately dominating the game. There was physical play, as well, and you could tell how badly each team wanted this victory. Siovanija and Teusland’s best early chance came off the boot of Ivo Romanov, who fired in a shot that was knocked over the bar by the Qasden keeper. Regardless, there was an inescapable feeling that before long, goals would come to this match.

Qasden managed to draw first blood in the game. Applying a bit of pressure to the Goldhorn defenders, Nikola Karapetrov was eventually forced to concede a corner. The ball was whipped in, but the initial header was stopped by Julian Fehr. The ball rebounded off Fehr, however, and before Lutz Daschner could get a touch to knock it away, the ball fell to the Qasden centre forward. Not missing the golden chance, the forward was able to blast the ball past Fehr and give Qasden the 1-0 lead. Suddenly, things were not looking good for Siovanija and Teusland.

The Goldhorns, however, showed great character and were able to hit back almost immediately after. Lutz Daschner used his pace to bomb down his wing, carrying the ball into the final third. Daschner’s cross was headed clear by the defender, however the ball fell to Thorsten Kramer outside the box. Kramer used his great skills on the ball to make his way closer and closer to goal, before he found an opening. Kramer fired a low shot along the ground that beat the keeper to his left post, and suddenly all was even again in the match.

Siovanija and Teusland would build on that lead in the first half. Lutz von Bergen won a free kick along the left touchline. Ivo Romanov, von Bergen, and Dietmar Kleinmann stood over the ball, debating how to go about this set piece opportunity. Romanov ended up being the man tasked with taking the kick, and he swung in a good ball high in the air. Raphael Klopfer was able to rise above everyone else and get a head to the ball, knocking it past the keeper and giving the Goldhorns a 2-1 lead.

Just minutes before half-time, however, Qasden would strike back and even up the score. Qasden moved forwards quickly in counter-attack, and the Goldhorns were struggling to rush back into defence. Raphael Klopfer attempted to put in a tackle, but the Qasden winger avoided his challenge and kept going towards the penalty area. Qasden outnumbered Siovanija and Teusland in the box, and after a short passing play were able to knock the ball past Julian Fehr. It was a bit of a defensive collapse from the Goldhorns, and suddenly there was tension again. With the half-time score of 2-2, Siovanija and Teusland would advance, but if they gave up another goal Qasden would be likely to advance.

As the second half began, Qasden poured forwards often and threatened goal several times. Julian Fehr was called to action a few times, needing to make several saves. The Goldhorns defended well, however, and were able to hang on, even if it was sometimes by the skin of their teeth. It was clear that the Goldhorns needed to push with everything left in them, either to get over the line at 2-2 or add something more to the scoreline to be able to get the result needed.

Eventually, a key moment would come for the Goldhorns that would see them grab a go-ahead goal. Coming on the counter, it was Viktor Dimitrov that broke forward. He made his way into the offensive end, and had options on all of his sides. Ivo Romanov and Lutz von Bergen were making runs on the right and left, and Michael Ribbeck was ahead of him. Dimitrov’s through ball found the run of Ribbeck, and the young forward took the ball ahead before firing a shot that found the top right corner. Ribbeck’s goal gave Siovanija and Teusland a 3-2 lead, and made it just a bit harder for Qasden to come back into the game.

Two conservative substitutions followed for the Goldhorns. Daniel Pingov was brought on to replace Nikola Karapetrov, and Dennis Brotzmann was brought on to earn his 24th cap in relief of Thorsten Kramer. Now, the Goldhorns were willing to sit back, hoping and hoping that it would pay off and Qasden would not beat them twice. The final substitution for the Goldhorns was Thorsten Helmke, who replaced Lutz Daschner at right back. Qasden had one great chance during the final 10 minutes of the match, however, the shot was deflected out of bounds, and the ensuing corner was cleared properly by the Goldhorns defenders.

At the end of 90, 4 more minutes were added on. 4 more minutes for the Goldhorns to defend, and 4 more minutes for Qasden’s final chance. As the game neared its end, however, the Goldhorns got on one final break. Viktor Dimitrov again was coming forward, before passing the ball off to Ivo Romanov on his wing. There was almost no one back now for Qasden, every player having been committed to the attack. Romanov curved into the box, now it was just him and Ribbeck. Romanov played over the pass and Michael Ribbeck tipped it home for his second of the game and absolute insurance for the Goldhorns, making the score 4-2. Ribbeck ran over to the corner full of Goldhorns fans, jumping into the front row and was absolutely mobbed by the crowd of supporters. Seconds after Qasden kicked off the ball again, the whistle blew, and Siovanija and Teusland have advanced to the knockout stage of AOCAF Cup LVI.

It’s a familiar opponent that awaits the Goldhorns in this round. 15th ranked in the region, Mriin were the winners of Group C despite a last-day defeat to Vilita and Turori. There have been two matches already between Siovanija and Teusland and Mriin, both in World Cup Qualifiers. Mriin defeated the Goldhorns at the Nationalstadion 4-1, while Siovanija and Teusland returned the favour by defeating Mriin 4-2 away from home. However, Mriin are surely the favourites in this one, and it is quite unlikely the Goldhorns can manage another upset.

“We know them a bit, obviously, and we know the quality they’ve got. Solara Vol is a great forward, and it’s going to be a tough day for us. We’re going to give it our all, and maybe one advantage we do have is that there’s no pressure on us here, we are underdogs,” claimed manager Alan Dzekov. Dzekov further clarified that it would take an incredible effort from the team to pull it off, but that he believed the Goldhorns were definitely capable of doing so.

That match will be played at Spire Grounds in Crystopolis, Equestrian States. We here at the Stelburger Zeitung will bring full coverage of the AOCAF LVI Round of 16 match.

Siovanija and Teusland 4-2 Qasden

Siovanija and Teusland XI (4-3-3): Fehr; Kleinmann, Karapetrov (Pingov 65’), Klopfer, Daschner (Helmke 82’); Kostov, Kramer (Brotzmann 65’), Dimitrov; Romanov, von Bergen, Ribbeck
Goals: Thorsten Kramer 18’, Raphael Klopfer 25’, Michael Ribbeck 62’, 90+2’
Match Notes:. A massive, massive win for Siovanija and Teusland, as they secure a place in the Round of 16. An early Qasden goal was cancelled out by Thorsten Kramer’s great strike, and Raphael Klopfer gave the Goldhorns the lead just 7 minutes after from a corner. However, Qasden would be on even terms before half-time, and it was a whole new game in the second half with everything on the line for both teams. Michael Ribbeck continued his great run of form with two goals, including a very late goal to put to bed any question left in the game. Next up for the Goldhorns is Mriin, a World Cup 80 Qualifiers opponent, and a team the Goldhorns have actually defeated in the past. There is no doubt, however, that this match will be the toughest yet.

Warriors Advance to Second-Ever Regional Knockouts
Darby's team will be looking to repeat past victories as they look to advance into the knockout stages, their first foe being Farfadillas

Jason Rigsby will look to help lead his team deep in this AOCAF knockout with his prolific offensive skills

Vaumort, Anthor(Herald) — Despite the conclusion being one of absolute horror, Adrian Draby has managed to guide his Warriors through the group stages of the AOCAF and into the knockout for the second time, proving that the year off last year may have helped with team play as the Warriors put together their best AOCAF record yet, opening the tournament with a clinical victory of 1-0 over Torisakia, and then following that up with a worthy performance that netted them a 2-0 victory over Melbergia. Despite the two straight victories, Darby elected to forgo momentum and chose to select a number of reserves for the final match against Eshan, a bold gamble because if results had gone the other way in the rest of the group it was possible it would have seen the Warriors run in this tournament end there, especially with just how badly the Warriors lost; it was their largest international defeat in a number of years.

Darby however has already mentioned that the team has learned from their mistakes and moved on, already stating he is going to be starting all squad regulars/starters for the rest of the tournament, which will probably come as a disappointment to the likes of Patrick Javier, Dominic Murphy and Peter Hawkins, but given their performance against Eshan I can see why Darby is electing to stick with his regulars after giving the "B" side a chance of things. However, Darby did mention a number of key changes for the remainder of the tournament; the first being that Richard Carter would be taking over as the starting goal keeper for the rest of the tournament, placing Byran Kimball on the bench. Kimball has been the perennial starter for the national team for the last eight international cycles, though he missed the last two due to a severe head injury and the one-cycle abstinence from international sports that the country underwent as a whole last cycle. Kimball's performance has been okay but he definitely looks a little sluggish between the posts, and Darby is hoping Carter who proved an able replacement for Kimball during his injury will shine brighter this time around; perhaps if Carter performs this way he is permanently kept as a starter when the Warriors head to the World Cup in a few weeks.

In addition to that change of players, Darby has also mentioned he will be changing his tactics; he didn't officially confirm anything, but analysts are expecting him to go to a much more familiar 4-4-2 formation, as the Warriors were spotted training with this tactic a number of times before and during the tournament. If he does decide to use this tactic, Rigsby and McKenzie will assuredly lead the front line charge, with Padmore and Stark playing out on the flanks as wingers; Elsmore and Cartwright will partner up to hold down the center of the pitch, Cartwright's defensive tenacity potentially combining well with Elsmore's nose for attack runs and speed. This formation will help the Warriors potentially produce more chances, letting Rigsby and McKenzie partner up is a grand idea as the former has greatly improved his passing ability in the last year or so and McKenzie is used to this formation as it's the one that she plays with domestically and allowed her to get two league champion medals. The potential weakness will be having Nicholas Starks on the right flank; he's never played in a winger position, and while he certainly has the athleticism to control that flank and run any markers ragged, his crossing ability isn't something that is well noted as he's a far better dribble and shuffle pass type of attacking midfielder, and high power floated crosses into the box are usually how Darby likes to use his wingers to open up the explosiveness of his attack, so it will be curious to see if he changes his mind and has Padmore play on the right and start Bissette on the left; the latter hasn't started for the national team in a year ever since Thorvald Padmore was picked up from the U21 squad, but he is still a very capable crosser, though much slower then Padmore and not used to a high tempo that Darby is fond of employing.

As they look towards the near-future in their match against Farfadillis, they are almost certainly looking to repeat the success they found in AOCAF LII, where they managed to stage a 3-1 upset on Farfadillis, and that was the same tournament were they advanced to the knockout stages for the first time in a regional cup. Although they ended up being defeated early on in that tournament, Darby and the boys are most definitely hoping that if they can put the brakes on the Farf's offensive explosiveness, they'll be more then ready to take on the next team at the next stage, but only the match itself will tell us how they do.

"Do you think your mental faculties are all in place?" Don laid a steaming bowl of veggie chowder on the hotel desk Joren was slouched over, taking a seat on the bed.
"More or less, yeah. Still feel a bit fragile but things aren't cloudy." He picked a bit at the chow and glanced back. "You ordered something without meat?"
"It's late, none of the specialty places are delivering now. At least not the ones worth a damn. The food's not important, though. We... really need a result against S-and-T."
Joren glanced back again, a bit more incredulously. "Well. Yeah, it's a knockout match, of course we need a result. And don't poke an eye out."

Don flinched back, not realizing he'd been contemplatively running his claws along his forehead. "Oh, I've been doing that for longer than you've been alive. Multiple times over. But..." He let out a heavy sigh, knowing it wasn't a secret he could keep any longer. It pained him that the situation was grinding on him this much, but this position was his road to international renown, one of the few things he didn't have on his CV. It couldn't end here, not when he was so close. "...I've gotten an ultimatum from the MNL. Semifinals or they find someone new."

Some puree'd turnip soon found itself decorating the wallpaper. "...fuck," Joren muttered as he patted the wall with a spare napkin. "They're really throwing you under the bus now?"
"It's the time to do it. We've got a poor record in the AOCAF, a fraction of the people are watching, and the fans that are have three group stage exits weighing heavy on their mind."
"That's results-oriented garbage talk. We went from nothing to more than most nations can dream of in no time. We've haven't lost to a top-seeded team in... what, four years? The Farves in qualifying for WC78?"
"Do you want to go on TV and try to convince people that winning isn't everything? Everyone is excited for the first qualification, and even the second to show we're a real team. When we make it a third time it feels routine, no matter how much work we actually have to put in to get there."

The two stewed in silence for a bit, munching on various green and red things that Don wasn't going to admit tasted pretty good. Eventually Joren caved and gave his own sigh. "I was hoping we'd be above the political nonsense roulette other FAs go through constantly. But the MNL board is made up of business people, so I guess I should have expected they'd figure out publicity moves were better for ratings than... well, the long path to good football."
"Let's not get too defeatist yet. Here I was hoping you'd cheer me up!"
"...yeah, you're right. It's nowhere near over. And the path to the semifinal is about as clear as we could hope. The Siovanijans are in solid form, but the pummeling they took to Cosumar shows they've still got weaknesses to be exploited. I'll watch what replays I can before passing out tonight--maybe even rewatching the ones from qualifying, flesh willing--and we'll have two days to drill the team. We're not letting you down that easily."

Ponies Beat Banija (Again) to Finish Atop Group A

CANTERLOT - Since the Equestrian States' return from a time loop before the World Cup 79 campaign, the Equestrians have developed a few new rivalries on the hoofball pitch: against Chromatika, The Holy Empire, and Banija. The Ponies have faced the Chromatiks only twice, but both meetings came in high-profile knockout matches, the Chromatiks winning decisively in the AOCAF 55 quarterfinals en route to their first regional title, and the Equestrians emerging victorious in the second round at World Cup 80 to reach their first ever World Cup quarterfinal. The Holy Empire and the Equestrian States shared a qualifying group in World Cup 79, trading road wins in their two matches, and though The Holy Empire and Equestrians have yet to meet again since then, the Imperials are currently fielding a team of psychotic bunny rabbits that - for reasons which the Equestrian public remain largely unaware of - really don't like ponies. But easily the fiercest new rivalry the Equestrian States have seen develop is that with Southwest Atlantian Oceania neighbors Banija, culminating in the recently-resolved Busoga Islands Conflict.

The Equestrian States has done exceptionally well in this new rivalry, emerging victorious on both the battlefield and hoofball pitch. With regards to hoofball, the Ponies and the Kadongo Kamu had met three times prior to last night's AOCAF match, in a post-World Cup 80 qualifying friendly and in the group stages of the 71st Cup of Harmony and the 80th World Cup, with the Equestrians winning all three games, the most recent an extremely physical match that saw the Banijans controversially target Ponies star striker Pristina Shine with a number of dirty tackles. As such, the Ponies were looking to maintain their perfect record in the rivalry last night with yet another win and ensure they would finish ahead of the Kadongo Kamu in the Group A table. It took yet another extremely physical battle, but the Equestrians ultimately prevailed 2-0 to complete a perfect group stage and enter the knockout rounds of the AOCAF Cup in excellent form.

For the third consecutive match, the Ponies pushed hard for an early goal, Apple Cobbler's 3rd minute bullet deflected over the crossbar by Banijan goalkeeper Jumu Sanneh. The Kadongo Kamu were focused on Pristina Shine as the Equestrians pushed for the opener, too focused, and the Ponies would take full advantage of this error just minutes later. In the 7th minute, Pristina Shine drew out the Banijan defense, passing to Rainbow Blitz just before being brought down from behind by Wasa Jawo. Referee Chandra Nalaar played the advantage as Rainbow Blitz dumped the ball off to a wide open Rosewing, no longer marked by Jawo, who promptly buried the ball in the bottom right corner of the net where Jumu Sanneh had no chance of making a stop. The Ponies had their goal and their early lead.

When the Ponies score first, they usually win, and it's not hard to see why: with an experienced and talented back line and a lethal counterattack, to say nothing of world class goalkeeper Gentle Breeze, the Equestrians are a nightmare for opponents playing from behind. Knowing that they couldn't push numbers forward or risk leaving themselves exposed to the Ponies' feared counterattack, Banija tried to play the ball through the midfield to create scoring chances, a strategy which was largely unsuccessful beyond driving up Banijan possession. The Kadongo Kamu had a few scoring opportunities in the first half with this strategy, but Gentle Breeze was always there to make the stop and the Ponies kept their lead heading into the second half.

Meanwhile, on defense, the Banijans were predictably physical, especially with regards to Pristina Shine, duplicating the tactics from their World Cup match that saw seven of the Kadongo Kamu booked. Daniel Asres and Alifa Diawara both picked up yellow cards for challenges that some would argue were borderline reds, driving up tensions on the pitch as the Equestrians became increasingly frustrated with Chandra Nalaar for not punishing the Banijans appropriately. Andrea Molovi eventually took matters into her own hands, bringing down Diawara with a rough tackle of her own, setting off a scrum between the two teams around Nalaar as captains Cloudchaser and Chibuzo Afolayan got in a shouting match. Nalaar seemed uninterested in using her red card, but in the 68th minute, her hand was forced by Daniel Asres when the midfielder brought down Pristina Shine hard from behind. There was no argument from Asres when Nalaar produced Asres' second yellow and then the red card, sending him off for an early shower.

The Equestrians, up a goal and a player, were ruthless on the attack as they looked to put the nail in Banija's coffin; and just as she had in the World Cup, Pristina Shine would provide the breakthrough. Freed up from being relentlessly double-teamed, Pristina Shine was able to work herself into the open in the 82nd minute just as Apple Cobbler crossed the ball into the box. Pristina Shine let the ball bounce once before volleying past the helpless Jumu Sanneh into the back of the net. The final 10 minutes played out largely without incident and the Ponies had their fourth-consecutive victory against the Kadongo Kamu.

In her post-match remarks, Equestrian States manager Pearly White again hammered her Equestrian-born Banijan counterpart Marcus Waters for his choice of "unnecessarily physical tactics." Still, with a perfect group stage secured, Pearly White was happy to move on from criticizing her opponent and praise her side for an excellent performance both in the match and in the tournament thus far. With ten goals scored and just one conceded in three matches, the Ponies are in excellent form entering the knockout rounds. Only Vilita & Turori and the famous attack of Farfadillis finished the group stage with more goals, and none finished with as few conceded. The long-shot dream of a regional title no longer seems as impossibly out of reach as it did just a few tournaments ago.

OOC: No previous MD RP from Chrom around the lineup, so I've gone the safest route of 1-11 - happy to switch them up and edit the positions if my opponent requires.

Four years ago in the same country, in the same stage of the competition, against the same opponents, Starblaydia crashed out at the Second Round stage, eliminated in the knockouts again, by Chromatika. The Chromatiks went on to win the touranament, defeating the four-time Champions Valanora in the Final to claim their first Atlantian Oceania title.

It has been a long road for Starblaydia in the twelve years since Ázëwyn Fëanáro took charge of the national team in the wake of the AOCAF Cup 53 debacle, held in Chromatika. Starblaydia drew with Semarland (more on them later), but then proceded to lose to Qasden, The Redvale, Chromatika (that name again) and finally three-time regional champions Audioslavia. Four years later, they won a single match but again eliminted in the Group Stages in Tropicorp. Four years after that, getting out of the Group Stages with two barnstorming wins and a solitary loss to hosts Euqestrian States, before being knocked out by Chromatika, and here, now, Starblaydia faced Chromatika again in the Second Round.

It's almost like some movie screenwriter had their eye on this one, but would it be another verse in the stanza, rhyming like all the other ones, or would Starblaydia's largely youthful team flip the script and continue their story of upward progression?

Both teams announced themselves in their expected 3-5-2 lineups an hour before the match, numbers 1-11 starting on both sides save for injured Starblaydia goalkeeper Bjorn Järvinen, who is not expected to return to the team even if he recovers from his lower leg injury, replaced as before by Martin Bennet, wearing 12. Bennet's contribution of picking the ball out of the back of the net three times against three time regional champions Valanora was rectified with a clean sheet against Solsteed in the final group game as Starblaydia stormed in the second round, taking second place in Group H behind the near-perfect Vanorians.

Starblaydia were out in their change kit of purple with white trim, led by the tall figure of Syku Ryku. Chromatika and their white kit with black sash were without their AOCAF winning Captain Meagan Kelly, but still had a host of title-winning players, including the married couple of midfield engine Alyss Montague and one of their two star strikers, Keira Andisori, providing a link in attack that no others can possess. In somewhat-bias Starblaydi eyes it was something of a clash of the titans, but the reality of the situation was it's a team who haven't made it past the Second Round in almost thirty years, who last won the tournament more than one hundred and thirty years ago, versus by far the best team in this side of the knockout draw, the undisputed regining and defending regional champions who were looking to go all the way a second time.

It was clear from long before the whistle to kick-off that whichever of the two midfields won the battle would give their team a huge advantage in this match. It also quickly became clear after that whistle that the Chromatik central midfield three was not only full of experience - some 352 combined senior appearances to Starblaydia's 75 - but also full of quality. Hanar Nauglamír barely touched the ball as Montague and Sybill passed around him with ease. Will Anderson and Austin Dashwood were chasing shadows from the outset and the best Starblaydi performer in the opening stages, Marcello Di Bradini, cut a frustrated figure on the far side of the Manehattan Industrial Park pitch as over 47,000 fans by the river cheered on their favoured teams as best they could.

To say Di Bradini was 'the best', however, was like choosing a tornado as the 'best' natural disaster to happen to your city when the other options were an earthquake, a tsunami and a meteor strike.

Aysu Damjana was the earthquake, the huge defender leaving the furstrated and chained down Soronúmë on his backside more often than not. The Tsunami was Andisori, Molly Thorben and Jazmin Dragana breaking time and again into the Starblaydi half and the penalty area, forcing Ryku, Avathar, Ortega and Bennet to be at their desperate best in order just to keep the Chromatiks at bay. The meteor strike itself came from Kaytlyn Victoriane in the first team minutes, dropping her shoulder, knocking it around Dashwood and brilliantly firing the ball home from 20 yards, just the faintest of bends to curl it inside the post and far beyond the dive of the unsighted Bennet. The tsunami kept on coming, though, and no amount of positioning from Avathar could possibly make up for the deft touch that Victoriane showed, playing the ball brilliantly around the lanky Elven defender and then finding the pass for Andisori to slot home. Barely fifteen minutes played and Starblaydia were 2-0 down and hoping to avoid a thrashing.

With the travelling Starblaydi fans holding their heads in their hands already, Ázëwyn Fëanáro did not hang around to change up her team. Movement was happening on the bench as the fromer goalie Jerzy Makuszewski yelled out instructions to the team. The fourth official stepped up with the board, and two of the most unlikely numbers lit up. Coming off, number 9, Ella Kabeya. To most people's eyes, Ella Kabeya is the goalscorer for Starblaydia, netting once in every two appearances for her country, on average. Her record now would stay at 34 goals in 67 games for now, however, and in her place was number 23, Aaron Cole.

Twenty-two year old Aaron Cole. Twenty-two year old Aaron Cole who has played just once for Starblaydia, as a substitute in the last AOCAF Cup. Sure, he's scored four goals for the Under-21s in seven appearances and is one for the future, but on for Ella Kabeya? Surely this was madness. Madness was also pushing Soronúmë up and dropping to four in midfield against Chromatika's five. Surely? But the switch-up worked, as almost immediately Starblaydia got on the ball. In place of a midfield trio, a solid flat four in the middle allowed more players to play to their strengths. Di Bradini didn't need to waste his energy up and down the left touchline, while Soronúmë pushed up front with Rayyen, both allowed to roam free between wing and centre as their natural game required. Dashwood anchored the right to get more of a hold on the flying Dragana, while Will Anderson and Hanar Nauglamír's little-and-large partnership in the centre was boosted by Aaron Cole's physicality, the youngster dropping back into midfield to add yet more steel.

Starblaydia actually managed to get their foot on the ball for prolonged periods. They actually passed it around and threatened when going forward. As half time approached, Anderson won the ball from Hellion in the midfield and it fell for Nauglamír. The Dwarf swivelled on his left foot and immediately chipped the ball out wide to the right. Soronúmë controlled it brilliantly with the outside of his left boot and then simpy flew down the wing, accelerating away from Molly Thorben, drifting into the inside right channel and, finally, jinking inside of Asyu Damjana to burst into the box. Seemingly without looking, he pinged a square ball across the box and there was Mezna Rayyen to slot the ball home in at the far post. She'd kept up with the magical run of Soronúmë and with all eyes on the flying Elven winger, she'd snuck in at the back for the easiest of tap-ins. It had been made so easy by her speed and positioning, and it was her fourth goal of the tournament, her eleventh overall in twenty-four appearances for the twenty-five year old. Starblaydia ended the first half rampant, despite being two-one down, and Silian Parker was glad to bring his side in at the half still in front.

The second half started much the same way as the first ended, with Starblaydia largely camped outside the Chromatik penalty area. They were, however, looking vulnerable on the break as despite their newfound attacking intent and ability. It wasn't long before the Chromatik exploitation of that defensive frailty was Starblaydia's undoing, as Hellion set up a counter attack that saw Victoriane sweep home for her second of the game past Bennet, the second time in three games he'd conceded three at this AOCAF.

But Starblaydia seemed unphased. They reset and they went again, not allowing Chromatika to stay on the ball for too long, not allowing them to pass it around and make those incisive runs in the channels that had hurt the men and women in purple so much. Anderson and Dashwood got a real hold on the middle of the pitch, freeing up Di Bradini and Nauglamír to use their attacking instincts. When Rayyen was brought down by Morningstar wide on Starblaydia's left flank, up stepped Di Bradini to swing the ball into the area. It was the perfect flight and the perfect height, and Aaron Cole had perfectly found space in btween Aart and Damjana to power a header home, down and into the net. Three-two, twenty minutes left. Game on. Again and again Starblaydia pressed at the door, but again and again Jillian Nier and her defenders were equal to the task.

Or they were, until a training ground free kick sent Starblaydi fans into dreamland and tied the game with five minutes remaning. Chromatik substitute Mimi Kuazmi brought down Rayyen on the edge of the area and Marcello Di Bradini stepped up to take it, flanked by Hanar Nauglamír. He looked, he checked the wind by throwing a bit of grass into the air, he looked again, around the wall, seemingly picking his spot. Focussed and determinded, he set himself for the free kick and took a short run up. Instead of, as expected, powering a curling kick towards the goal, he slyly tapped it to his left, past the wall, who were still in mid-air, and to the feet of the onrushing Nauglamír. The little Dwarf buried the ball in the bottom left-hand corner as Starblaydia, outrageously, had brought it back to 3-3 from 2-0 down. Both sides thought they could get a winning fourth goal in the few minutes remaining, but neither was able to force the scoreboard to change further, and Extra Time was called upon to try and separate the two teams.

It began dreadfully for Starblaydia. As Austin Dashwood slid into a challenge, something in the otherwise innocuous collision left the midfielder clutching his ankle. Play continued, as it wasn't whistled as a foul, and ended with the Schottian League player of the year completing her hat-trick as she delicately chipped the ball over the onrushing Bennet, left stranded by an unsually flat-footed defence. With almost all of the half hour left to play, Starblaydia had to come from behind yet again, and they had to climb that mountain once more if they wanted to stay in the competition. Worse yet, Dashwood was unfit to continue and Starblaydia's final substituion, to ensure a like for like, was to bring on Viola Capodanno on for her third appearance for her country at the age of just eighteen. The energetic box-to-box midfielder was, other than her age and inexperience, the perfect type of player to be able to bring on in this situation, if they had twenty caps to their name. Asking a fresh-faced eighteen year old, the youngest in the squad, to come on and anchor the midfield against the regional champions was a big ask, but Ázëwyn Fëanáro is nothing if not a coach who knows her players.

It was tense, it was cagey, it was Starblaydia trying to go for the equaliser yet again without managing to be hit on the ever-dangerous counter attack. While Starblaydia were having the better of it, the cracks in the Chromatik play were there to see. They'd been knocked out in the Second Round of World Cup 79, knocked out in the Second Round of World Cup 80, and here they were, even as the Atlantian Oceania title holders, playing in the Second Round against a Starblaydi team who were straight up refusing to die.

The first half of Extra Time came to an end, and the second half began. Time ticked inexorably on and both teams' play became more and more frantic. Clearances were scuffed, sloppy fouls crept into the game and the dreaded long balls were resorted to, attempting to clear the minefield of the ten bodies packed into it and go direct to the strikers.

That was until Aaron Cole got his head to a long goal kick from Bennet, heading it back into midfield and to the feet of Capodanno. with fresh legs she advanced, coming through the centre circle, running forward, all left foot controlling of the ball. She rode the challenge of Kuazmi, using her strength to hold off the Cedina Beach player, knocking her off her trademark short stride that gave the Chromatik so much speed. Capodanno continued to come forward, racing towards the penalty area. She jinked to the left, wrong-footing Damjana, while Aaron Cole had drawn the attnetion of Aart, leaving the veteran Lonngeylin defender in no man's land between the onrushing Capodanno and Cole as he peeled away into space. Viola Capodanno had no need for the option, however, as still in mid-stride of her lungbursting run she unleashed a cannon of a left foot shot that sailed and curved and dipped straight into the corner of the net. Neir could only dive to her left with palms outstretched, reaching nothing as the ball bounced into the goal and Capodanno had her first goal for her country, equalising at the end of Extra Time against Chromatika. What a way to announce yourself on the international stage, with a mazy box-to-box run culminating in a wonder goal.

Penalties loomed and neither side wanted them. Both believed they had the quality to end it in the 120 minute period, but no breakthrough could be found by either team. A penalty shootout it was.

Chromatika won the toss of the referee's coin, correctly answering 'Moon' when asked 'Sun or Moon?' by the referee before flipping the ceremonial disc of hard currency. Chromatika would shoot first, an instant advantage. Or so they thought.

Hat-trick heroine Kaytlyn Victoriane stepped up confidently and cleanly struck a sweet kick to Bennet's left, firing with precision and power. Bennet, however, had guessed correctly, either from footage of her previous penalties or just flipping a coin inside his own head, and got one massive right hand to the ball high above his head. It bounced clear, and the reaction from Lammerton's twenty-four year old striker was sheer disbelief. She'd beaten Bennet three times from open play, but he'd finally denied her from the penalty spot. Starblaydia's Soronúmë stepped up confidently himself, usually the second-choice penalty taker with Kabeya in the side, but she could only watch from the bench as he blasted the ball into the top right-hand corner, and one might think that two goalkeepers in net couldn't have got it, Nier had no chance. Starblaydia were 1-0 up after one.

Keira Andisori was having none of this nonsense, knowing that she absolutely had to score to stop the momentum irrepairably shifting to the team in purple. She placed the ball, stepped back, jogged up and slotted the ball to Bennet's right, sending him the wrong way. Job done for the Starling striker. She met the easy smile of Marcello Di Bradini coming the other way with a determined stare, but it didn't put him off. Cool as you like he dinked the ball straight down the middle, sending Nier diving to her right, her trailing foot unable to swipe at the ball as it sailed calmly into the back of the net. Starblaydia 2-1 up after two.

Rachel Hellion was next, setting the ball and blasting it into the roof of the net in the blink of an eye, so much so that had Bennet got his body behind it he might as well have been carried into the goal by the force of the kick. Hanar Nauglamír was Starblaydia's next long walk from the centre circle. He pinged what would usually be a great penalty kick to Nier's left, but she'd read the Dwarf's body language and managed to catch the ball in mid-flight for what looked like the easiest of saves, but was actually world-clas goalkeeping. Nauglamír tugged ruefully at his beard braids and trudged back to the centre circle into the welcoming arms of his side. The teams were level at 2-2 after three.

Chromatika's fourth penalty taker was Sandra Sybill, and she again took no nonsense with her placement, run up and shot. again Bennet was sent the wrong way and the ball hit the back of the net for what was, for Starblaydia, a depressing third time in a row. Now the onus was on them, and it was Aaron Cole's turn. He plaed the ball, stepped back four, five paces. Two to the side. He looked at the ball, the goalie, the ball and the referee as the whistle blew and took a stuttering, rhythm-changing run up to the ball, half-paused for a moment, and with almost no backlift powered the ball high into the net. The easy confidence of a twenty-two year old in their first penalty shootout at senior international level was downright infuriating, even for some Starblaydi fans, never mind Chromatik ones. Level at 3-3 after four.

Jazmin Dragana was next, the winger with fifteen goals to her name. She knew where the net was, but maybe it was the nerves, maybe the occasion, maybe the pressure, but her penalty was soft and saveable, the perfect height and distance away for Martin Bennet to get two solid palms to it and push it away, well away from goal. Dragana immediately turned in dismay, her eyes closed, rueing her kick. Bennet celebrated with the Starblaydi crowd, but not too hard, because they'd not won it yet. Walking up the pitch was Mezna Rayyen, four goals to her name in four matches, leading the line at the age of twenty-five. Score and Starblaydia wins, miss and they go home.

She scored, and Starblaydia were really in dreamland, their first AOCAF Cup Quarter-Final since the 49th edition - one where assistant coach Jerzy Makuszewski had ended up on the wrong end of a 4-3 loss on penalties to Krytenia, of all places.

Starblaydia will be facing Semarland (told you we'd mention them again) in Crystopolis. They said this was the easier side of the draw for Chromatika, that winning against Starblaydia would allow them to sail almost unhindered into the final against one of the other big teams like Valanora, Farfadillis or Vilita & Turor who all won their Second Round matches. It certainly is the easier side now, as 12th ranked Starblaydia face 23rd ranked Semarland, with the winner to play either Ko-oren at 27th, or Mriin at 15th for a place in the AOCAF Cup Final. Across the other side of the draw lie the 1st, 4th, 5th and 17th-ranked sides remaining in the competition, so destiny really is there for the taking in Equestrian States.

Banija triumph 3-2 in Round of 16 victory over Oontaz to advance to their second consecutive AOCAF quarterfinal

Image
Banijan players run to the corner to celebrate their game winner

TROTTOWA, EQUESTRIAN STATES- Banija is back to the quarterfinals of the AOCAF. Feels good to say, doesn't it? For the second straight tournament, Banija has clinched a place in the last 8 at the region's premier soccer tournament, by overcoming the Sultanate of Oontaz in dramatic fashion in the Round of 16. It was another thrilling game in what was a largely thrilling Round of 16- no clean sheets, three of eight matches going into penalty shootouts, and only one match that can truly be described as a blowout on the scoreboard, Valanora's 6-2 shellacking of Demot.

But, of course, let's get to our game. It was a thriller in every way- both teams, climbing to new heights in the World Cup 80 Qualifying campaign, looking to build on what they had previously accomplished in the AOCAF. Banija, looking to find their way back to the quarterfinals, after stunning neutrals in their first entry to this tournament, where they not only got second in their group, but stunned rivals Eshan on penalties in the Round of 16. And the Sultanate of Oontaz, of course, eliminated by Banija last time around, adding the element of revenge to the mix.

The game started off with the Lions of the Sand and Sea truly taking the game to the Kadongo Kamu. They wanted to win, and would make the Banijans work for everything they would get. They earned a corner kick only in the fourth minute, and Estevez wasted his chance as he skied his free header well over the crossbar. Still, the Banijan midfield was shaky, and with Daniel Asres suspended and Samba Ndaw playing in his place, the team had a different kind of feel to it.

With the Lions of Sand and Sea wasting their first chance, the Banijans had a chance in the 12th minute, in what was truly an up and down game. A Gitonga Kahara cross was met by Toyuwa Okafor, who unlike his counterpart, put his header on target. Unfortunately for him, however, the Oontaz goalkeeper, former Isaac Georgiadis teammate Karim Ansarifarid, was there to smother the header. The game was very up and down, and certainly, wearing on the players. In the 21st minute, however, a foul by Isaac Georgiadis gave the Lions of Sand and Sea a free kick. A curled ball to the head of Campanilla, a massive Oontaz center back, connected perfectly and went into the back of the net, giving the Group B winners an early 1-0 lead.

The game had been largely even to that point, and a goal, for either team, was coming. The question was, of course- who would score that goal? The goal was scored by the Lions of Sand and Sea. And, of course, now came time for the Banijans to respond. The central midfielders, especially Isaac Georgiadis, began to take control of the game. First to every loose ball, stepping up the physicality, etc... Doing what they could to ensure that the Banijans would assert themselves onto this game. And the efforts paid off, when a handball in the box earned the Banijans a penalty. Okafor buried the ball into the upper corner of the net to convert from the spot, and they went into the half tied.

The game was tied, but the Banijans, in this moment, were getting the better of their opponent. And they were certainly going to go all out and try for a winner at this point. The Banijans started to do all kinds of things- in the 50th minute, Okonkwo Okparro took the field for Samba Ndaw, noting an intense offensive shift in the formation. The former Di Bradini Cup star, and the new Makosile United signing, was aggressive. He would repeatedly go for the jugular, trying to put one into the net. He finally had a moment in the 62nd minute, when he was able to launch one from 20 yards that was almost perfectly placed into the upper corner, to give his squad a 2-1 lead. Banijan fans were celebrating, they just needed to see this out.

Of course, this put the manager in a tight spot- they needed to play defensively, but with Okparro on the field, their personnel was certainly in an offensive formation. He ended up moving Okparro to the attacking midfield spot, and put Ensa Camara on the pitch to play in the other central midfield spot. Extra defender to see this through, right? The change was, unfortunately for Marcus Waters, disastrous. As the Banijans fell back, he failed to play balls for the counter, like Waters wanted. The Banijans paid in the 76th minute, when the main he was markig, Zulfiqli, beat him on a cross to the ball and had a free header that he took full advantage of, to make the game 2-2 for the Lions of Sand and Sea.

The Banijans were shocked- they had worked this hard, but Oontaz were meeting them, punch for punch, as they also wanted to go to the quarterfinal. The Banijans turned it on again, working hard to look for a winner. Waters made his final change, putting Ansu Cisse on the field for the young Gitonga Kahara. It ended up paying off, as in the 82nd minute, Ansu Cisse shot a ball that rebounded off of the crossbar to Isaac Georgiadis, who slotted the ball home to give the Banijans the winner. As he ran to the corner to celebrate, the Banijan half of the stadium absolutely exploded.

The Banijans were not going to mess this one up- they looked to kill the game on the counter attack. Oontaz was forced to bring the ball forward, and with veteran wingers Cisse and Afolayan on the pitch, they would simply get the ball to the corner on the offensive end, and do enough to run out the rest of the clock and win the game. A great win for the Banijans, and of course, the first knockout stage win for Marcus Waters as the Banijan manager.

Their next game will be against Vilita & Turori, their united squad. They traditionally unite for the AOCAF, even though they are seperate in most competitions. There should be a few familiar faces on that squad, as Banija faced off against Turori twice in World Cup 80 Qualifying, while they played Vilita in the group stages of World Cup 80. Our next edition, of course, will have the full preview of that game- what to expect, all the information on Vilita & Turori, and what Banija needs to do to pull off what would certainly be an incredible upset in Stalliongrad, a city home to a large ethnic Banijan community.

A look at the accuracy of the Sport Report projections for the AOCAF 56 Round of 16 in the Equestrian States are ended up looking at the conclusion of the Group Stage...

Sport Report Round of 16 Predictions:

Equestrian States vs. Ko-oren
Prediction: Equestrian States

After completing a perfect Group Stage campaign everything was lining up apples and rainbows for the hosts as they drew twenty-something ranked AOCAF fifty runners-up Ko-oren in the Round of 16. Many would have showed up at the Elements Stadium in Ponyville hoping for or even expecting an exciting high octane match with many chances to celebrate the ball hitting the back of the net. Eventually the balls would be hitting twine in quick succession but not until after 120 nail-biting minutes of missed opportunities and strong defending. After full time and extra time ended without a goal being scored, penalty kicks would ensue and the clinical finishing of the Dragonflies would ultimately be the undoing of the hosts as they crashed out at the first knockout stage.

Sport Report 0 for 1.

Mriin vs. Siovanija & Teusland
Prediction: Mriin

Debutant nation Siovanija & Teusland continues to look like the power nation out of the World Cup Eighty Baptism of Fire class despite having been ousted from the Baptism of Fire Cup by fellow Atlantian Oceanian's the Commonwealth of Baker Park. While Baker Park was also impressive at the LVI AOCAF Cup in the Equestrian States, they were not quite good enough to do what Siovanija & Teusland had done in not only advancing to the knockout rounds but drawing a winnable match against an improving but as yet unproven Mriin side. In the end, however, it would ultimately be the only match in the top half of the AOCAF bracket to not require penalty kicks to settle it as Mriin held strong in a close 2-1 result at the Spire Grounds in Crystopolis ending the fairy tale run by the newcomers but setting themselves up for a potential best-ever AOCAF performance.

Sport Report 1 for 2.

Eshan vs. Semarland
Prediction: Semarland

Ultimately it was a shame for those who ended up in Manechester that they were stuck with watching a lifeless Eshan squad go through the motions against a barely more inspired Semarland side just looking to re-establish its footing in Regional Competition. The match itself wasn't terrible - perhaps to the neutral or the local hoofball supporters of clubs like Manechester City it would be at least a more interesting match than watching the home-town Equestrian side lose without scoring a goal - but even the penalty shootout lacked passion as time efforts down the middle were stopped by goalkeepers and uncontrolled spot kicks blasted over the bar. It seemed to take ages but Semarland finally prevailed 3-2.

Scout Report 2 for 3.

Chromatika vs. Starblaydia
Prediction: Chromatika

The defending AOCAF tournament championship up against the 5 Time World and six-time Atlantian Oceania regional champions Starblaydia in what was certainly the most interesting matchup in the upper half of the draw and also perhaps the flashiest and most exciting of all the Round of 16 matches. Luckily for the 47,000+ packed into the Manhattan Industrial Park, this particular Round of 16 matchup most certainly lived up to the billing - in fact, it likely vastly exceeded even the wildest expectations of those in attendance and was easily he most exciting match of the first knockout round. With six goals shared evenly between the two sides in regular time and both former champions adding an additional tally in the extra session it would be the third of four matches to need to be decided in a penalty shootout. The defending champs were ousted 3-4 in the penalty shootout as Starblaydia would move on with their sights set on re-claiming their regional throne.

Scout Report 2 for 4.

Sultanate of Oontaz vs. Banija
Prediction: Sultanate of Oontaz

There was just one Round of 16 match in the lower half of the draw that did not contain a top 10 ranked side but regardless those in attendance at the Trottawa Stadium got their moneys worth with Banija stunning the Sultante of Oontaz who can't seem to make a deep competition run that they have been looking for to establish themselves as a threat to be contested with at the regional competitions. The Banijan's would win 3-2 to advance to their second consecutive AOCAF Quarter Final in the Equestrian States.

Scout Report 2 for 5.

Cosumar vs. Vilita & Turori
Prediction: Cosumar

While the tickets for entry into the match at Apple Orchard Park might have read something generic such as "Group D Winner vs. Group C Runner-up" - or perhaps, if they bought their tickets on the day of the game they may have even read "#2 Cosumar vs. #4 Vilita & Turori" - every single fan in attendance had been duped for what they had really bought tickets for was a party. It was a coming out party for Eastal Lunar starlet Limu Katarakhna who finally stepped out of the shadow and into the lime light on the big stage scoring a hat-trick to account for all three of Vilita & Turori's goals in the 3-1 victory over Cosumar. It was a surprisingly impressive showing from the Eel-Cat Things after their struggle to advance from Group C, losing the opening match of the Group Stage to Saint Emelie before advancing from the group on a three-way tiebreaker alone. But as you have to be in it to win it, the Eel-Cat Things were most certainly in it and even with the toughest draw of any top side being the only team in the Top 5... Or Top 10.. to have drawn against another team in the Top 5, they held strong and thanks to the great showing from Katarakhna, comfortably waltzed into the Quarter Finals into what should be a more forgiving matchup against an up-and-coming Banijan side.

Farfadillis vs. Anthor
Prediction: Farfadillis

If there was one Round of 16 matchup that Sport Report was ready to double down on - where they felt the absolute highest level of confidence in their prediction - it would have been the other Manehattan matchup between Farfadillis and Anthor. Ranked in the top 5 in the region there was little reason to suspect that the Farfuzilla's would have any trouble taking care of business against an Anthor side that was barely even cracking the top 20 in the rankings. Struggle they did, however, as any time they knocked Anthor answered and it ultimately became the only match in the bottom half of the draw that required extra time. Then, shortly after, it become the only match in the bottom half of the draw to require penalties. The crowd inside Derby Field could feel the energy of a massive upset but in the end the Farfushians would survive winning the penalty shootout 4-2 to set up an even bigger Quarter Final clash.

Sport Report 3 for 7.

Valanora vs. Demot
Prediction: Demot

Sport Report were clearly thinking there might be a little fairy dust sprinkled on the Dynamo as it would be unlikely that anything less could result in such an upset result. However, with Farfadillis needing penalty kicks to dispatch of Anthor in a similar twenty-something against Top-5 fixture it seemed anything would be possible. It wasn't long however before the two southwestern Atlantian Oceania nations were separated by the class of the top ranked team in the region and Valanora ultimately prevailed 6-2 in just the second Round of 16 matchup won by more than a single goal.

Sport Report 3 for 8.

Sport Report Quarter Final Predictions:

Ko-oren v. Mriin
Prediction: Ko-oren

Despite being ranked lower than their opponents, Ko-oren have the experience necessary to take their Quarter-Final berth and turn it into something much bigger with zero Top-10 nations left in the upper half of the draw, a place in the AOCAF LVI Final seems ripe for the taking.

Semarland v. Starblaydia
Prediction: Starblaydia

The Starblayde supporters army have likely already looked at the brackets to see what the purple peril have in front of them and are likely smiling ear to ear as a result. Starblaydia look to pound through the upper-half of the bracket in a bid to reach their first major Final appearance since World Cup 63 and first regional Final appearance since AOCAF 29 - nearly half the length of the entire history of the AOCAF ago.

Banija v. Vilita & Turori
Prediction: Banija

Backstopped by Turori's citizen netminder Wiyauw An'maude and powered by midfielders Mbdiai Akarenaa (4 Goals) and Limu Katarakhna ( Hattrick v. Cosumar ), Vilita & Turori seem to have responded positively and jelled after dropping the opening game of the campaign to Saint Emelie. Unbeaten since and having taken down a strong Cosumar side, Vilita & Turori will likely just need to avoid playing down to the level of their opponent. Banija will be a plucky side who can still the match if Vilita & Turori do not take the opportunities they receive.

Farfadillis v. Valanora
Prediction: Valanora

The only match of the Quarter-Finals that pits two top five nations against each other, the Farfadillis v. Valanora clash will be circled on everyone's calendar as a can't-miss better fit for the championship game instead of the 43,000 capacity Shady Grove stadium that had previously only seen Group Stage fixtures such as the ever enthralling Tropicorp v. Ko-oren. As the higher ranked side, Valanora should prevail but if they can't get the job done in the 90 minutes, anything could happen.

"And... Ko-oren to take the field against the Equestrian States. The hosts have an amazing record, on road to winning this AOCAF, maybe? The home advantage will do them good, and are looking to beat a curse that's over their head - never have they gone past the quarterfinals in everything but the Di Bradini Cup. And here the Ponies take the field: Gentle Breeze, one of the best goalkeepers in Atlantian Oceania at the moment. A backline of Hamilton, Molovi, Flitter and Bailey, a midfield consisting of Tyler and Aiza as defensive midfielders, and our first pony-only line at attacking midfield: Rainbow Blitz, Cloudchaser, and Apple Cobbler. That leaves us with one forward in the 4-2-3-1, and it's obviously Pristina Shine. Not much to be commented there, you should have seen some of her goals before by now. Ko-oren are coming onto the field now, and have survived what should have been a certain elimination in the group stages against Tropicorp. Can they get a second consecutive upset going? We have the normal 5-3-2 as it seems, with Theshendan - not flawless but had some crucial saves in the Tropicorp game. Then Linderood, Mizuno, Benjamin, Lampshire, and Swadling in the crowded backline. This time around, there hasn't been a lot of switching around. If you remember the World Cup qualification matches, the Dragonflies came out with a different set of 5 every match until coach Juliasterinthen decided on this configuration a little before the last match, and they've stood ever since. Linderood and Swadling are easily the most controversial choices, but there aren't many to replace them right now - and thus they stand as wing backs. The extremely young trio of Mizuno, Benjamin and Lampshire are a lot more certain of their position, and are looking solid at the back and should rid us of selection questions for the next decade or so, at least! Then midfield, holding midfielders Kapitein and Ulysse, both going through a very solid showing for them. Longchambon, leading the team in assists, as attacking midfielder as always. Duchemin and Pirastadhaunden start up front, and that's our teams! The Dragonflies haven't had a lot of trouble scoring this AOCAF, but conceding goals has been a theme by now. The referee comes on with the match ball, the players are meeting up in the centre circle. It's time for the anthems, then we'll get the kickoff to the first Round of 16 match of AOCAF 56. Later today is Mriin versus Siovanija and Teusland, which should be the opponent of the Ponies or the Dragonflies in the next round."

"Welcome back, Pristina Shine and Cloudchaser have gathered in the middle to take the kickoff and get this match under way. There's the whistle, there's the pass, and we've begun!"

"Both teams are nervous to get the game going. Ko-oren hides itself deep on its own half, desperate not to give Pristina Shine more than a few square centimetres. Rainbow Blitz and Apple Cobbler are struggling to find space as well. Linderood and Swadling are both doing a great job neutralising them as threats, together with the holding midfielders. The Equestrian States are the team with most possession - but Ko-oren have the only shot on goal so far."

"The Ponies have now been on the Ko-orenite half a fair bit, and are really pushing for a goal. It's been their tournament staple to score early and then sit back a little - don't forget, the Ponies are also primarily a slightly defensive team and have no trouble leaving possession and initiative to their opponents - but only when they're ahead. And the Dragonflies have one mission, which they've carried out with aplomb. Keeping that clean sheet at all costs. It's taken a little bit of Theshendan magic, but we're holding on so far!"

"We go to the dressing rooms with a 0-0. Nothing out of the ordinary so far, except maybe if you expected an early Equestrian goal. Surely that has dampened the spirits a little bit in the Ponies' locker room, they'll definitely be looking to score the first goal this match, though also wary of the Ko-orenite counterattack. That said, there's very little to suggest that the Dragonflies will be trying for a goal unless there is a really good opportunity. The Equestrian have six shots, two of which are on goal, and both of them came in the first 10 minutes. The match has been a bit flat ever since. Ko-oren have a yellow, two shots on goal, and three shots in total. Pretty good accuracy, but what's the value of that if those shots come from 30 metres out anyway."

"Second half underway. Ko-oren kick off and circulate the ball between defenders, we'll be here for a while. The Ponies seem to have a new instruction, and that is pressing deep on the Ko-orenite half - which means there's more space for the Dragonflies, maybe even enticing them to go on an adventure and score a goal ourselves! But that surely is the Ponies' game plan as well, and we could be looking at a battle of the counterattacks from here on out."

"And that's it, there's the final whistle. 0-0, we've ended this match as we've started it. The Dragonflies have never left the defensive formation, adding two more shots in the second half. The Equestrian States have been ruthless in their beleaguering of Theshendan, but failed to get the job done in the first 90. Both teams have used their three subs - the Ponies to bring an extra striker on, sacrificing a defender to get back to their regular 3-4-3... looks like Rainbow Blitz joins the attack to be the third striker. Ko-oren have maintained formation, a defender for a defender, a midfielder for a midfielder, and an attacker for an attacker. Equestrian States to kick off again, and we'll be looking at another 30 minutes of football. Though defensive and not that interesting for a neutral fan, I can't get enough of this. It's chess on a football field, which isn't so bad as people make it sound sometimes!"

"Here we go! Knockout matches can only end with one victorious team, so penalties it is. First match of the knockouts, and we get the cruelest way to decide a winner in the very first match already! Coaches now have a few minutes to get their list of kickers. The Ponies will kick first, psychologically a fair choice. This means the opponent will always trail, rarely lead, and it takes some pressure of off the players' backs."

"Rainbow Blitz to open for the States - I can never get enough from seeing ponies take penalty kicks, a bit clumsy, but it gets the job done. And he blasts it... just beside Theshendan, but not far enough! He can get a hand to it and guides it wide! Duchemin comes up for Ko-oren, with a goal here they can get a little of that shoot-first-advantage back. No problems for Duchemin! Hard through the middle, 1-0 Ko-oren."

"Pristina Shine is here to bring the magic back to the Ponies, hasn't made a single mistake this tournament so far. And no mistake now either, it's 1-1! Vermelho, subbed on late in the second half, is up for the Dragonflies... Long run up, gives the goalkeeper time to react, but that's a beautifully placed ball into the top corner, it's 2-1!"

"The Equestrian States are done trailing, Rosewing steps up. And that's just a brutal kick, 2-2. Not that far to the side, but far too fast for Theshendan to do something about it. Kapitein, oldest player of the Ko-oren starters at 26, comes up. Is this too much to ask from such a young team? Apparently not, it's 2-3 and he makes no mistake."

"Fourth round, that early miss might come back to haunt them. Cloudchaser, with all their experience, is to take the next one. And that's over the bar! Still 2-3, and this gives the Dragonflies an opportunity to end this! Nathan Didier, subbed on for Ulysse, slowly walks to the penalty spot. It's all in for experience this round, Didier is 31 and complements Cloudchaser's 33 perfectly. Short run up... GOAL!!! That's 2-4! And too much for the Equestrian States to overcome, Ko-oren win and advance to the quarterfinals!!"

Somewhere in a cheap Manechester hotel, it was all quiet on the top floor apart from the stifled sobs coming from one of the rooms.

The man in there was from Semarland, and you'd think he'd be happy as they booked their place in the quarter finals - Reiss Claro-Hunt had cancelled out Marco van Ciavattini's opener and Kwaeome Richards had put away the decisive penalty to set up the tie with Starblaydia. But the young receptionist of the hotel had no clue who the man was. The man didn't expect her to know who he was and nor did he care. He never cared about being famous, he just enjoyed doing what he loved.

Key word: enjoyed.

Kwame Nelson had never been so upset or angry in his life. He felt ashamed, like a coward, that he had deserted his team. After his family, he loved his teammates the most. All throughout his career he made a habit of keeping in touch with every club and country teammate and member of staff. He loved the people who he loved and all he cared about was making them happy. But now he was at a time where he wondered, all these years should he have put himself first? Never once did he even think about it, as he overthought and overthought. What if I do this? And this leads to that? And that results in...and on and on and on. He looked on the bedside table and found a notepad, and began scribbling into it furiously.

Football is my life. I've lived and breathed it...yeah that's such a cliche. But it's true. Those six years without it were hell, not playing...

He sighed, tore the page off, scrunched it up and threw it into the bin, allowing himself a small smile as it landed in first time. He began writing again. Detailing his love for his family, friends, football. He felt grateful he had the chance to experience what he did. But a lot happened during the "gap." He watched as his best friend out of football bled to death in the street, having been stabbed. He watched people starve in the streets, all because the "President" made such stupid decisions the normal people had to suffer. Kwame ensured every single penny of his wages went to helping others, but it wasn't enough.

He watched as the doctor told his girlfriend she had suffered a miscarriage.

Football didn't seem so important anymore, but Kwame wasn't upset for him. He was upset for everyone that football offered a "way out" to. An escape from normality, a chance at happiness. All the young kids he coached had so much potential but some of them away drifted into things that seemed more promising at the time. Selling drugs for the Quebecois crime lords that seized the opportunity in such a weirdly vulnerable nation. And it felt like it was Kwame's fault. He was supposed to stop all that, he overheard one of the parents say.

It wasn't enough, was it?

He stepped into the bathroom and cleansed his face. He checked his phone to see a dozen messages, from Kadell, his teammates, from Kiera, from his parents. Reluctantly, he dialled Kadell's number but was put through to voicemail. He left a brief message - he was sorry, he would rejoin the team but understood if he started the game against Starblaydia on the bench. In fact, he wanted to, he didn't deserve the opportunity, but before he knew it he realised he went on too long as the tone sounded once more. He texted Kiera and his parents to let them know he was okay, and sent a quick message to Sehun to let him know he'd rejoin them shortly.

He packed his things and left the hotel. It was the middle of the night but there were taxis outside, and he got in the first cab and asked for the hotel the team were staying at. He checked his phone again and swore under his breath.

Dalvar Bright, Jacob Clarsson, Rene Abrahams and Deon Dackley were all charged with the attempted murder of Simao Brewster and the wounding with intent of schoolboy Akaiah Izelle-Clunes yesterday. The quartet are all exepcted to serve a minimum of eight years each, whilst Shivon Toulouse was released after insufficient evidence...

Akaiah was one of his "pupils". He was at Jansberg Laguna this season but was told he wouldn't be getting a scholarship due to "off-field activities." Akaiah was warned against mixing with the wrong crowd, but he was still fifteen, one of the youngest in his year. He was impressionable, and Kwame was powerless to prevent him from doing such things. All he could do was get back and help the team, for Akaiah and the others. He recognised the name Simao Brewster. Kwame was watching an U12s game way back between the two Jansberg clubs and was impressed by Laguna's striker. "That's Simao Brewster," one of the FC Jansberg parents said. "Heard we're in for him." Just before the gap he was about to earn his scholarship but things changed. College wasn't the same and there were faster routes to money. Kwame swore again.

Another one fucked over by the SFA and the government.

Kwame got to the team hotel just after 5AM. Everyone was asleep but he checked in and decided he'd speak to Kadell and the team in the morning and apologise for his absence. That was all he could do now, but upon his return to Semarland, he was determined to set things straight, for everyone.

Banija approach AOCAF quarterfinal as heavy underdogs against Vilita & Turori

Image
Banijan training session as they prepare for the AOCAF Quarterfinals

STALLIONGRAD, EQUESTRIAN STATES- The Kadongo Kamu, once again, are preparing for a potentially massive match. A chance for this team to make more history- of course, achieving their first ever qualification to the World Cup Finals in the previous edition of the tournament. That was a joy to watch, a joy to see, as their seventh attempt was the first to bear fruit. And now, of course, this team, this generation, looks to build upon that success- continuing the slow and steady climb that Banija is taking up the ladder in the world of international soccer. Their first World Cup Qualification under check, they are looking to assert themselves in the near abroad, as well. Something that the country can't seem to do politically, as was seen with the Equestrian-Banijan war that ended with the Surrender of Busukuma Bay, but something that the country is intending to do on the pitch. Another run here can ensure that the country isn't viewed as heaving peaked, and have settled for what they have accomplished. This team is hungry, this team is continuing and will continue to climb that ladder, and wants to eventually assert themselves among the regions great dominant powers- teams with stars above their crest, like Valanora, Cosumar,

While this is Banija's second consecutive quarterfinal in the AOCAF, they are not, by any means, one of Atlantian Oceania's foremost sporting powers, especially in soccer. One look at the empty trophy case at the RBSA can tell everyone that. They are making progress, for sure- consecutive quarterfinal appearances in the AOCAF, finally getting the World Cup qualification monkey off their back, and, of course, their youngsters, at the last U21 World Cup, making a stunning run to a third place. Banija's players are beginning to show up all over the multiverse's top leagues- with the skipper, Chibuzo Afolayan, leading the way, his move to AFC Corvistone a few years back helping the team's meteoric rise through the Nephara pyramid, earning a spot in the multiverse's top ranked league, the Nepharim Premiership. That's not the only one, though. Toyuwa Okafor just landed himself a contract at Avenida Neal, in Farfadillis. Ensa Camara in Cosumar, Gitonga Kahara in Ceni, and the list continues. Starting to play among the multiverse's best is clearly helping the team develop.

Not just that, but the Banijan Soccer League is flying high. Of course, just a few seasons ago, they were the second worst ranked league in the UICA. Then, of course, a 50 spot raise in one season, and that was followed up by a 20 spot raise- which will see Herzegovina City FC be the first Banijan club to participate in UICA competition, after their own shocking run throughout the Champions Cup summer qualifiers. Key to developing local talent, they are starting to draw talent from abroad as well- Aaron Aiza of the Equestrian States being the biggest name, as he has been at the center of Herzegovina City FC's rise to dominance within Banijan domestic soccer. And of course, five players who ply their trade in Banija played in the most recently completed U21 World Cup, highlighted by BSL goalkeeper Edgar Farsal-Smith leading Mercedini's squad to a third place finish in that youth tournament.

This, of course, has all raised the profile of Banijan soccer- both of our own leagues, and our own national team. To continue that climb, of course, when the lights are turned on, when the spotlight is brightest, the Kadongo Kamu need to step up and perform. It is all about continuing to make progress, continuing to make the climb up the steepest mountain in all of sports. And that means, for the second time in a row, they find themselves in an AOCAF quarterfinal. It comes as surprise to some, but this a team that wants to continue making further steps forward. Winning games in big time situations is what it's all about- Banija has done that, with big qualification wins over Turori, a win at the group stages of World Cup 80, and of course, their upset knockout stage victory over Eshan in the previous AOCAF, when just 10 days prior, Eshan had walloped them, 5-1.

Of course, during that time, Banija has also shown that they don't have the class to truly compete with the big dogs- at least, not yet. A massive friendly loss to Cosumar in World Cup Qualification friendlies, continued competitive losses to the Equestrian States, their showing at World Cup 80- consistently close, but no cigar, when it mattered against the groups big boys, Vilita and the Equestrian States. What this team wants to prove, is that they can go out there and punch with the big boys. They aren't simply a loveable underdog- they want to show that they can go out there and stand, toe to toe, with some of the best teams in the multiverse. They had the opportunity to show that against the Equestrian States in their final group stage match- and they failed, losing 2-0. Another chance against a big name opponent comes up next, against Vilita & Turori.

Vilita and Turori, individually, are national teams that will be familiar to Banijan fans. As many of us might remember, the Kadongo Kamu played Turori in their World Cup 80 Qualification group, a group that eventually sent three teams to the World Cup Finals. They faced off twice- the Banijans falling 2-1 in Turori on Matchday 8, but avenging their loss on Matchday 17, winning 1-0 in Montreal to take a massive step towards the World Cup 80 Qualification playoffs. And, of course, they faced off against Vilita at the actual tournament, losing 3-2 to the three-time World champs- and seeing themselves knocked out of World Cup 80 with a game to go. As is tradition, they enter a combined team into the regional championships, and they are one of the favorites, with starry eyes looking for glory. Can the Banijans derail their march to the Final?

Vilita & Turori, as a combined team, are marching through this tournament. After a shocking opening day loss, they put seven past South Toronto on Matchday 2, and seemingly haven't looked back, defeating Mriin and then swatting aside regional giants Cosumar, who won AOCAF 54 and are the region's #2 ranked side, they will surely look the favorites against this Banijan squad. Why, do we ask? Look at the talent on the roster. Limu Katarakhna, just 19 years old, exploded onto the scene for Vilita & Turori, starring against Cosumar, recording a stunning that all of a sudden makes Katarakhna one of the players to watch for the rest of the tournament. Having only one national team goal heading into this tournament, that game was certainly a coming out party for the youngster, and it just makes one more name that the Banijans need to worry about.

And here, of course, comes the question- how can the Banijans stop Vilita & Turori? If one of their teenagers can score a hat trick against Cosumar, what chance do the Banijans have? Well, of course, they will have to pack it in, tightly, in the back. The Banijan defense will certainly have to ensure that Vilita & Turori are suffocated going forward. Players like Daniel Asres and Isaac Georgiadis are going to have to step up. Girma Asmelash, of course, the attacking midfielder, is likely going to be needed defending, as they will defend in depth. But of course, it is against the Banijan psyche not to go for the win, and there will certainly be the moments when the Banijans are seemingly pouring men forward, looking for goals. How can they ensure this is positive? They need to make sure that they don't expose themselves, and, of course, the three-head trio up top needs to make sure that they take their chances. Afolayan, Kahara, and Okafor cannot be wasteful- unless Vilita & Turori sit back and invite pressure, which we doubt they will do, those three will need to take advantage of any opportunities that they get to put one into the back of the net.

The Kadongo Kamu are massive underdogs- the other three teams left on their half of the bracket are ranked #1, #4, and #5 in the AOCAF rankings, while Banija is ranked 17th. It doesn't take a genius to figure out which team doesn't fit, am I correct? But they are capable of pulling off a shocker. Their victory over Turori late in World Cup 80 Qualifying, for one, or their playoff aggregate victory over Mercedini in the same campaign- the squad is certainly capable of pulling off what would certainly be a great upset. But is Vilita & Turori, too experienced, too talented, and too strong, for the Banijans to overcome? Is their run of momentum too much for the Banijans to overcome, as seen in their dispatching of Cosumar? Or, of course, considering they just played a top 5 opponent, and yet another is on the near horizon, will they look past the Banijans and give the Kadongo Kamu a chance to make history at this tournament?

It's hard to tell what will happen- but we will offer our predictions. The game will be better than expected- there will be no blowouts in Stalliongrad. The Banijans will work hard to frustrate Vilita & Turori, and have the kind of team unity and work ethic that could make them the tournament's cinderella, even though they easily are on the tougher side of the bracket. However, the unified team is stronger on paper, but especially in midfield, where Mbdiai Akarenaa and Limu Katarakhna most certainly outclass Isaac Georgiadis and Daniel Asres. And, of course, there are still more questions in net, as Jumu Sanneh is being granted his third start of the tournament, even though Berhane started against Oontaz. The Banijans will fight hard, and it will be tight, but we ultimately predict that the game will be level, 1-1, after 90 minutes, but Vilita & Turori will score a pair deep into extra time, driving a stake through Banijan hearts and eliminating the Kadongo Kamu from AOCAF LVI, by a score of 1-1(3-1 AET).

"Now apologize." Joren pointed his spoon from Don to Kalia, spilling a few noodles in the process.
Kalia's eyebrows shot up as she looked to Don and back to Joren. "Apologize for what?"
"He's not talking to you," Don sighed. "I may have confided some misgivings about your performance before the match. Not speaking of your ability, but the lack of recent first-team experience."
"So you were worried about me being rusty?" She shrugged. "That's fair enough. I was rusty as hell in the match we lost to S&T in quals, and that was sort of a wakeup call. I'd definitely been slacking off since I got benched; it's not like you subbed me in much."
Joren nodded and pointed back to Don. "That's another point I've been meaning to make with you. Our depth is a sore spot, and that might very well be why we've had issues competing later into tournaments."
"Working depth is a noble goal, but we have to work with the player pool we have." Don glanced back at the rest of the table, realizing how that might come off. "Not to throw anyone under the proverbial bus, but there's a clear gap in the talent we currently have. With MNL teams struggling in UICA and the b-side results against Qasden and S&T... I know providing more experience can help towards that, but we don't have many games I'm willing to risk on anything less than our best."
"You're underestimating the skills we've got." Joren shook his head and finally put the spoon back in the bowl. "That much was clear watching Kalia in my spot. She might not have the situational awareness I do, but her pace falling back was important for checking the Siovanijan counter-attack."
"And my crosses are tighter, too!"
"...sure, but I pick out better chances. Anyway, most of our subs are just refreshers or shifting the formation back. But when everyone is expecting us to be high-pressing goal hounds, being able to switch things up with Tia and Pia's short-ball game could throw them off hard. Fundamentally changing how we play."
Don shrugged and slammed back the rest of his noodles. "You're not wrong, I'm just specious we have the chops for it. But we've got time to drill it before the Ko-oren match. They're a wild card, so I don't mind an ace in the pocket."

Eel-Cat Things prepare to take on Banija...

The Vilita & Turori Eel-Cat Things head off to Diamond Park in Stalliongrad where they will contest the AOCAF Quarter Final against Banija. It is the second consecutive AOCAF cup where Banija will be contesting the AOCAF Quarter Final in the Equestrian States having crashed out at this stage during AOCAF 55. It was an early exist for Vilita & Turori during AOCAF 55 which they are looking to avenge this time around and climb back into the upper echelon of Atlantian Oceania regional tournaments.

Despite being a top ranked nation in the AOCAF rankings, Vilita & Turori have struggled to bring home any silverware in the multiverse's oldest running regional competition. In the previous 14 runnings of the AOCAF competition the Eel-Cat Things have advanced from the quarter final stage to the Semi-Finals in half of those runnings but went on to win exactly zero of those competitions while nations such as Farfadillis, Valanora, Osarius, Cosumar, Chromatika and even Krytenia have gone on to win their first ever AOCAF Championships since the last title won by Vilita & Turori. In fact, Vilita & Turori's last AOCAF title serves as something of a line of transition in the history of Atlantian Oceania's great regional championship.

Before Vilita & Turori's AOCAF XLI victory, the previous seven AOCAF's had been won by just two nations: Pacitalia and Audioslavia. Extend that to the previous 11 editions and just one other winner is added - Cafundeu. It was without question a period in the tournaments history that came to an end, with a new period with a new set of victors clearly kicking off. Since Vilita & Turori's last AOCAF title, Valanora have won the regions top tournament four times, Osarius three times and Farfadillis twice. In fact, since Vilita & Turori's last AOCAF title of the fourteen trophies handed out - just one went to a nation that had lifted the trophy at any point before Vilita & Turori's AOCAF victory: AOCAF 22's unlikely champion 95X.

Now, however, the Eel-Cat things have a chance to change that in the Equestrian States. With Valanora and Farfadillis awaiting the winners, Vilita & Turori will clash with a familiar foe: Banija. For Banija it is a chance to make a name for themselves on the world scene. For Vilita & Turori it is a chance to remind all those that have forgotten about them that they still exist and they can still play.

There may not be a specific history between the unified Vilita & Turori Eel-Cat Things and the 'Kadongo Kamu' of Banija but there has most certainly been plenty of familiarity between some of the players as the Vilita Jungle Cats recently disposed of Banija during the group stage of the World Cup 80 Finals. While many of the players on the Eel-Cat Things squad were not involved in the match itself as the Eel-Cat Things roster comprises mostly of Under-24's and future prospects of their respective national teams but at least two of the Vilita & Turori squads stars will be bringing their direct experience from that match - Eastal Lunar duo Nii'arala Milaaso and Limu Katarakhna. Milaaso will be certainly licking their chops for another chance to square off against Banija after scoring the game winner against Banija during World Cup 80 while Katarakhna is coming off a career defining performance after scoring a hattrick to lead the Eel-Cat things over #2 Cosumar in the Round of 16.

Even the Turorian players on the squad will be motivated for the match after they were denied the opportunity to prove themselves against Banija during World Cup 80 Qualifying. After a horrific start to the World Cup 80 Qualifying campaign led by poor results from the Citizen Squad, the Football Association of Turori turned to the Cocoabo who set off on a seven match winning streak to climb back into a qualification position. The Cocoabo ended up playing both matches against Banija winning the first and dropping the second. The Citizens never even got the chance. Now, uniting forces with the future stars of the Vilita National Team, top talents of Turori's Citizen Squad will finally get the chance to prove they were wronged by the Football Association of Turori when the decision was made to replace the Citizens with the Cocoabo squad for the World Cup 80 Matchday 17 away fixture in Banija. Wiyauw An'maude was a shining light for the Citizen Squad in qualifiers conceding less than a goal per game including a shutout on Matchday 18. They've stepped up to the challenge and now will have a chance to do what they never got the chance to do at the World Cup - prove they have what it takes to do what the Jungle Cats did, but what the Cocoabo could not do: defeat Banija outside of the Island Emirate.

The Nation Formerly Known As Ibex
A tale of splinter states that spans the cosmos.

Part 4: Capra of The Coalition of Governments

NYOOM. Before we get see the next stop Ibex itself takes, we see a stopoff in a distant star system by the name of Novian. A controversial yet enigmatic figure in the Alliance of Dictators, Commissar Zytzev of Khalite, had big plans for expanding into space--but even the might of the Khalite economy wasn't able to afford the massive costs necessary to reach the distant planet Lerodas, where they'd managed contact with other highly-developed nations like Fraserstone and Vanhania. That's where Ibex came into the picture--the raw might of the brutal Ibex economy combined with the lacking intellect of its populace made a perfect pawn for the leap onto the global stage. While resources from both were funneled into developing fine Khalite starships, bits and bobs of engineering knowledge floated the other way. Combining that with [goat version of elbow grease] and a teeny bit of black magic, the Ibex were actually able to fabricate crafts that could very generously be called 'space-worthy'. Surprisingly, in the Great Voyage, over half the ships the Ibex launched actually made it to Lerodas intact, and two new colonies were set up in the northern hemisphere of the planet (in what was considered "the east" by natural denizens). Khalikhan directly took after its homeland, an incredibly efficient fascist machine under the direct order of Commissar Zytzev. Capra, the Ibex colony, did... not.

The settlers had been sent in more of a disorganized blast than a concentrated effort, and without the imminent threat of "secret" police breathing down their necks Capran culture quickly snapped as far in the other direction as it could. A jazz musician by the name of Coltrain ended up using his charisma to rally the largest group of settlers, taking on the position of Chairbuck of the new state and setting the precedent for immense freedom. Their sham of a religion was dropped almost immediately, local councils where those mythical 'votes' could be had were set up, and there were things to do other than work your hooves to dust! In hindsight it's probably fair to say things got a little too free--mega-corporations soon formed, especially over the vast offshore oil reserves the island they landed on happened to harbor, and would define the politics of the nation for as long as it existed--but you'd never be able to convince any of the new Caprans that. Any and everything was better than the oppression they'd grown up under.

International politics on Lerodas quickly heated up following the arrival of the two newcomers, the Khalites quickly growing a strong distaste of the Vanhanians in the west. It was a case of similars repulsing--both were imperialist nations (albeit of starkly different domestic hues) that loved to be the center of attention, which naturally lead them into conflict. Vanhania was already the pre-established force to be reckoned with in the Coalition, so Zytzev quickly collected what allies he could--including Capra and fellow easterners Paixao--into the Solfasist Pact, an alliance who's presence would define an entire era of the planet's history. Meanwhile, the Caprans themselves struck up a friendly rapport Libertas Liber, another freedom-appreciating state that was also well-respected within the region. And so the Caprans got down to business, eagerly selling arms to the many opposing factions that dotted the map--including to certain enemies of the Pact, but don't tell Zytzev that! From their prime position as a central distributor for the Pact, well-laid connections to other capitalist powers, and the convenience of their grey-market offerings, the Capran economy boomed and became a disproportionately large player in the region (for a couple of goats on a still-largely-jungle island). That economic power was leveraged into political power as Capran dignitaries were elected into various regional roles, such as: Chairbuck of Intelligence, Vice High Chairbuck under a Libertan High Chairman, and an extended presence on the Lerodan High Council.

But of course, that era wasn't all sunshine and cash flow. The Capran industrial machine was put to task supporting Solfasist interests around the world, from minor skirmishes in smaller eastern states to the great Acquarius standoff that stalemated for years on end. The Caprans themselves were forced to get their hooves dirty when Twinkies Inc--an entire nation run by a single corporation, with frighteningly efficient brainwashing techniques--found another large oil reserve under the nearby island of Caprio, a previously-ignored patch of dirt with naught but some primitive human tribes inhabiting it. They swiftly dispatched a small expeditionary force to scout out and set up a temporary base of operations--only to be ambushed by Capran mercenaries, who'd caught wind of the discovery during the longer voyage from the Twinkie mainland. A dirty, dogged all-out war would follow, with superior Twinkie tech grinding into dug-in Caprans with a close friendly port and overwhelming numbers. While the naval battle initially went in favor of the Caprans, the arrival of carriers established Twinkie air superiority and paved the way for landing a proper invasion force on the beachhead. Jungle-based guerrilla warfare would make the following months hell on Lerodas for both sides, though the Twinkie propaganda machine seemed to even counterbalance the horrors of war, giving them an edge in morale. A final stand in the northern hills of Caprio seemed fated to be the deciding moment, but after the incredibly high mortality rate both sides suffered the Twinkies looked at the fortified artillery batteries that had been slowly built throughout the entire conflict and decided enough was enough. Twinkie leadership came to an agreement with the primary Capran stakeholders--CaprOil and Bivalvae Petroleum--wherein the reserves would be own and operated by Twinkie Inc, but the Capran oil consortium would receive 33% of the revenue stream, allowing both a healthy profit margin to attempt to recoup the losses suffered obtaining it.

The war would have a lasting impact on the nation, as hindsight tells us. Several major Capran mercenary companies had their reserves nearly wiped out, and as Capra had previously kept no federal military personnel resources were stretched extremely thinly to provide a respectable defense force ready for turbulent times. With those resources drawn away the economic boom screeched to a halt, and gradually the nation faded into international obscurity without the leverage of its business interests. The final nail in the coffin would be Khalikhan dissolving the Solfasist Pact; despite ostensibly retaining allied status with Capra and other former Solfasist nations, the sudden and abrupt decision sowed seeds of doubt and eroded cooperation. Bereft of the power that brought the goats to Novian and enabled them to establish their own society, the Caprans seemed to fade into the mists of time. In the end, nothing more than a footnote in the long history of the Coalition of Governments.

One thing that won't fade into the mists of time (hah, killer segue, me) is the victory Novo Calania somehow managed over Cosumar, one of the veritable juggernauts of Atlantian Oceania. I mean, I say somehow, I know exactly how--the Cosumarites hadn't merely locked up a playoff spot, it was impossible for them to finish below first place. So a literal dead rubber against an unranked, no-name opposition? Off to bed with all the actual important players, on with the benchwarmers! Well, not exactly. A team entirely composed of Cosumarite nationals outside the top eleven would still probably be favorites to qualify for the World Cup. Perhaps there was a bit of extra miscommunication as they weren't all used to playing with each other, expecting more time from piecemeal starts and substitutions where portions of the first eleven were still on-field. Those holes could provide just enough space for sprightly young'ns like Makto and Pharis to find space and make a play! ...or, well, maybe it was Kurt Wolff getting handed a red card twenty minutes in. And then Lorelei Neptune lashing out about what exactly constitutes a foul on a goat that saw her off the pitch, as well. Even up two players the Ibexi barely managed to scratch out the win. Vega Zeale-Riddick managed to intercept a truly awful clearance Alfar and immediately dumped it into the top-left corner, equalizing against the run of play and forcing the Ibexi to venture forward once again. It wouldn't be until the eighty-third minute that a chance corner from a unlucky deflection off Tevreness Bale would find Villarmo's hoof, unmarked from lack of bodies and nabbing the second goal for Novo Calania's first international win. If there's ever one for the history books, that was it.

"Sürgân t'Öéséné gets ready to make his debút. He will be replacing Somuele der Pros, who is now far too tired to continue playing. Only ten minutes of extra time left and the Southwestern Showdown is still tied."

Ӿ Ӿ Ӿ Ӿ Ӿ

Sürgân fidgeted waiting for Somuele to exit the pitch. He was extremely nervous, understandably. He was one of the many far-too-young players Tíbürçìó had called up thinking they'd one day turn out good. Sürgân was, in a way, just a second division player in Vilita. Hardly the first player you'd choose to try and tip the scales in a game against Valanora. Yeah, he wasn't being handed the easiest international debút.

As soon as he stepped on the pitch, Sürgân realized just how much better than his typical opposition the Vanorians were. He quickly got his first ball, dribbled past Hatsune, and got promptly stomped off the ball by Soldarian. First touch, first ball lost. He quickly recomposed and made a run back. Usually, playing for Marine Coast, he would just run back and recover the ball. This time, however, he ran back for naught. Soldarian passed to Hawk, who floored him with a well-timed feint. Luckily for Sürgân, he did force him to go down the flank, and Marchiondo and Bajnok controlled him before he could find space to shoot. Still, Sürgân quickly realized he needed to adapt. This was not the level of play he was used to. Never before had he been the worst player on the pitch. Right then, he could very well have been.

The following five minutes were dizzying for Sürgân. Both teams played at a pace he just wasn't used to. Lázár Eleonóra looked for a one-two with him but was left wholly unsatisfied by his taking his sweet time with the ball. Wçêíl and Wínrôuge were similarly frustrated in two plays following that. In a matter of five minutes, Sürgân had made four mistakes. The Farf crowd, sizeable since the hosts were only a stonethrow away, got impatient to the point of booing him. Of course, the crowd was entirely Ferdullaelan, in all likelihood. No Rulandese could possibly afford a plane ticket. So the crowd booing him wasn't that farfetched, even at age eighteen with only five minutes of international experience under his belt. Precisely because he was so out of his element, so apparently out of his depth in this match, Sürgân decided to begin doing things he wouldn't usually do. And his very first choice lead to the Farf winner.

Wínrôuge received a pass from Wìjìnì. He turned around and saw three Vanorian defenders on him. They began ganging up on him after the opener he scored. He was playing one of his prime-Wínrôuge games. Still, getting past three is no easy task, the years had taught him that. He turned around. Everyone else was marked, but the Vanorians had left Sürgân completely unmarked, and with a lot of space to shoot. Wínrôuge set him up perfectly for a shot.

Usually, Sürgân would never go for a screamer. He liked to treat the ball more gently. Precise through passes, light touches and precise dribbling were his forté. But on that pitch, he had no forté. He was just the worst player there. No talents, only weaknesses. So he might as well have gone for the shot. And that he did. The ball hit the crosspost violently and bounced in. With only a few minutes left on the clock, Farfadillis were leading.

Valanora attempted to begin an onslaught after being left trailing. However, just as va Drake was about to enter the box, Bajnok made a providential sliding tackle. He then punted the ball upfield. While he'd usually not play the role of striker, Sürgân was, still, feeling completely useless, so he figured he might as well join the offense. He began running towards the Vanorian goal. Only two Vanorian defenders were left to protect against the counterattack. Eleonóra got to Bajnok's clearance and began the counter. He kicked the ball past one defender and got to it before the other. He then sent Sürgân through on goal with a precise pass from the flank. Sürgân picked up the ball and, unlike most of the time, decided to just go for a violent shot again. The ball hit Smørdal's arm, but it bounced off it and still went in. A brace for the midfielder.

Farfadillis were through, and only because Sürgân had done nothing of what he was good at doing, and also nothing that he was supposed to do. But sometimes football is like that.

AOCAF 56 - QF v. Banija

A look at the accuracy of the Sport Report projections for the AOCAF 56 Quarter Final in the Equestrian States are ended up looking at the conclusion of the Group Stage...

Sport Report Quarter Final Predictions:

Ko-oren v. Mriin
Prediction: Ko-oren

While Mriin may have been the better team 'on paper' - coming in as a high seed having topped Group C despite having done so on a 3 way tiebreaker, some like Sport Report would have argued that Ko-oren was the favored side in the Quarter Final matchup at the Star Stadium in Canterlot. Of all the Quarter-Final fixtures, this matchup was likely the one least deserving of center-court treatment in the nations capital city - the only Quarter Final pairing without a single AOCAF triumph between them where all the other AOCAF Quarter Final pairings averaged 5+ AOCAF titles each. Thats how the bracket worked out however and the fans in Canterlot were treated to a... 0-0 draw between the two sides. While neither had ever won an AOCAF cup, Ko-oren were the AOCAF 50 runners-up and their experience might have seemed enough to take them through until Mriin notched the games first goal in extra time to secure their first ever AOCAF Semi-Final appearance.

Semarland v. Starblaydia
Prediction: Starblaydia

A resurgent Starblaydia side would take on an overachieving Semarland squad in Crystopolis and it was ultimately an opportunity for the fans in Canterlot to feel slightly better about the match they witnessed at the Star Stadium - at least the purists amongst the crowd. While Mriin would ultimately get a goal from open play to win the match, Semarland and Starblaydia decided to have a 'hold my beverage' moment in Crystopolis and went the entire 120 minutes with neither side scoring a goal. It was yet another match that couldn't be decided in the 90 minutes and ultimately Starblaydia would prevail 4-3 in the penalty shootout.

Sport Report 1 for 2 / 4 for 10

Banija v. Vilita & Turori
Prediction: Banija

Having to contest the match without breakout all-around playmaker Limu Katarakhna after the Eastal Lunar player received a yellow card as a result of the celebrations after scoring the third of their hattrick goals in the Round of 16 matchup against Cosumar, the Eel-Cat Things brought in Kiidallen Aeroluzzi and the Rammsissil midfielder picked up right where Katarakhna had left off on the scoresheet. After playing the first two matches of the campaign against Saint Emelie and South Toronto, Aeroluzzi lost their place in the lineup. The Ramm was mostly ineffective in the first half against Banija but started to make more of an influence as the match went on. Trailing 0-1 heading into the stretch, the Eel-Cat things made substitutions but it was the started Aeroluzzi who finally brought Vilita & Turori back into the game with the tying goal in the 85th minute.

Aeroluzzi was at it again to give the Eel-Cat things the lead in the 116th minute after a left footed effort across the face of goal that snuck just in at the far post after the ball was played to space on the 116th minute corner kick instead of to the center of the box. Banija pressed forward to try to undo the damage but the extra space was left for Vilita & Turori to counter attack with the Turorian substitute Mirana Gotuai, the oldest player on the Eel-Cat Things squad, ending all doubts in the final minute after a 2-on-1 scenario saw Mungwaii lay the ball off for the right footed chip into the far corner that sealed the match and sent Vilita & Turori into the Semi-Final.

Farfadillis
v. Valanora
Prediction: Valanora

If there was any Quarter Final matchup that seemed best placed in the capital city at the glistening Star Stadium, it would have had to have been the Valanora v. Farfadillis matchup. The only Quarter Final matchup containing any teams that had lifted the AOCAF Trophy in its previous 10 editions including 3 of those where it was that very matchup for the title - was instead cast off to the Shady Grove in White Tail one of the smaller venues still left in play. Just as both Quarter Final matches in the top half of the bracket ended in a goalless draw after 90 minutes, the scoreline in both of the brackets bottom-half matches was also identical, this time with both teams scoring once in the ninety and followed up by one team scoring twice in Extra Time. It wasn't, however, the four-time AOCAF Champion, defending AOCAF Runners Up and current #1 ranked team in the region. It was the Farfies. Stunning the tournament favorites, la vainy rojas smelt the opportunity to take care of two of their rivals in subsequent rounds and disposed of the Marauders 3-1 setting up a curious Semi-Final fixture with a Vilita & Turori side that has a long history of mixed results against the Farfailerons.

Sport Report 1 for 4 / 4 for 12

It will be another chance for Turori's Citizen Squad to prove their mettle against a team that their National Team rivals the Cocoabo Squad couldn't confidently dispatch. Turori's National Cocoabo Squad lost the World Cup 80 finals opener to Farfadillis 1-3 before stringing off a trio of wins to advance to the Quarter final stage. Contrarily, the past two meetings between the Vilita Jungle Cats and Farfadillis have been positive for the Vilitans with a 3-1 victory in the World Cup 76 Round of 16 and a 1-0 victory in the opening match of the World Cup 74 finals - although it was a pyrrhic victory as the Jungle Cats would ultimately not advance from that group.

With early exists in recent AOCAF competition, it will be a new chance for new players to experience the Farvic rivalry. The matchup has also resulted in a 800% increase in sales of the ZOMBIFARF video game with Toys '4' All locations across the Vilitan Cove reporting the game sold out or backordered for the Vii Console. The current game is a remake of a cult classic providing updated graphics and new gameplay modes including the ZOMBIFARF Cup and the Ŝþéçíâļ Ćħâřâčŧéŕ shooting gallery where players are able to choose their targets from famous Farfazillians such as the appropriately named "Zombie Friek". Even sales of Vii gaming consoles saw a small uptick since the Semi-Final matchup was announced - possibly as some gamers found their dusty console no longer functioned and needed replacing.

Sport Report Semi Final Predictions:

Mriin v. Starblaydia
Prediction: Starblaydia

Starblaydia haven't reached an AOCAF final since the 29th AOCAF Cup and don't seem like they are about to let an upstart Mriin to become the lowest ranked finalist in recent AOCAF history. It will be a tough task however as Mriin arguably dispatch of more reputable opposition in the Quarter Finals and will be looking to add another higher ranked scalp to their collection.

Vilita & Turori v. Farfadillis
Prediction: Farfadillis

A re-match of the AOCAF 43 Semi-Finals that still lingers wretchedly in the memories of many Vilitan and Tuorian faithful. On the cusp of rising to the level of the legendary - looking to become just the third team ever to win three consecutive AOCAF titles - the Eel Cat things were outpaced on the night by their new and very hated rivals Farfadillis. La vauuughhhoja ended the Vilita & Turori reign at the top of the AOCAF and took their place at the top of the podium after defeating Valanora in the AOCAF 43 final. It was the first ever AOCAF title for Farfadillis and the Eel-Cat things have yet to win another AOCAF since. One way or another, the book has been re-opened an exciting new chapter in this long regional rivalry will be written.
