Adab through to Independents Cup last 16 after 4-1 thrashing of Juvencus

The Adabian team concluded their Independents Cup 5 Group E campaign on a high note, proceeding to the round of 16 on the top of the group following a 4-1 victory over Juvencus.

Adab's victory over Juvencus meant that they emerged from Group E with nine points, just one above second-placed Nurwiji, who handed the Adabian team their only loss during their Independents Cup campaign. Nurwiji also proceeded to the round of 16.

The Adabians dominated the match for the most part, with Juvencus' players often finding themselves unable to compete for the ball nor break through their opponents' defense.

Manager Saad Kaykali stated before the match that the team would play "relentlessly and unrelentingly, with short and quick passing and fast-paced playing in general that I guarantee will drive the opposing team blind," and his players made good on this promise. They started the match with the ball under their control and utilized this situation to their advantage, befuddling Juvencus' players as they passed the ball among themselves on their side of the pitch for the first two minutes, only to then launch a blinding incursion through the opponents' right flank as they were distracted. In the 7th minute, Salman al-Muntar launched the ball off the ground and more than halfway across the width of the pitch, reaching Shamsuiluna Zambiya, who passed it in a split-second to Enlilbani Yargab, who then delivered the final kick to the back of the goal.

Invigorated by this early goal, the Adabian side kept up the pressure on Juvencus for the duration of the first half, and to those in attendance it was surely never in doubt that they would end up winning the match. Goalkeeper Mohammed Marramzi, who notably broke down following his own goal in the previous match against Maryloupe, was in control of his composure and throughout the first half saved the ball on the rare occasions where Juvencus' players managed to seize the ball and get through the Adabian defense. In the 27th minute, left winger Adanirari Uhwan passed the ball to Yargab, who dribbled his way past a series of defenders and effortlessly catapulted the ball past the goalkeeper.

With the Adabian team now up 2-0, they seemed content to rest on their laurels for now and settled down to a slower pace, reducing their aggression while also not letting Juvencus' strikers venture far into their territory. This resulted in the ball going back and forth between Adab and Juvencus around the middle of the pitch and onto the latter's side for much of the rest of the first half. Credit must be given to three midfielders - Malik Aminuddin, Salman al-Muntar, and Ephraim Orlev - whose teamwork allowed them to pin down the opposition's players and nullify their attacks.

Juvencus started the second half with the ball and did the best they could to turn the match around or at least extract a draw, though their aggression often ended at the sturdy wall of Adabian midfielders and defenders. They found a crack on the wall, however, in the 67th minute; with Taymour Frangieh and Orlev distracted by several opposition players halfway between the goal and the middle of the field, the ball was suddenly passed far to the right, whereupon Juvencus' striker dribbled across Adab's territory and, barely escaping Eannatum al-Tikriti and Shamsidad Nahmoud's grasp, propelled the ball past Marramzi and into the goal. Marramzi, the captain of the team, managed to maintain his composure and was heard shouting encouragements to his teammates up front.

Adab completed their victory, and secured their status as Group E champions, on the 79th minute, as a corner kick by Orlev was translated into a masterful goal by Zambiya, who dribbled right between two Juvencus defenders on the penalty area and put the ball in its rightful place, with Juvencus' keeper just a second too slow to react.

Kaykali: "A great victory and a great beginning"

Manager Kaykali was understandably elated at the post-match press conference, where a journalist informed - and assistant manager Inimabakesh Thulus confirmed - that, with Nurwiji drawing 1-1 against Maryloupe, Adab was now through to the Independents Cup round of 16 as champions of Group E.

"It's an amazing feeling. How can I describe it?" Kaykali said. "I mean, if you remember, our football association was banned for ten whole years after a bunch of scandals - I myself was falsely convicted and imprisoned for two years - and now we're out here making a fresh start with a team of 17- to 19-year-olds and we've won our group."

The manager confidently concluded, "It's a great victory and a great beginning for this new Adabian team. Obviously it's getting tougher from now on, but as long as we stick together and work on our playing, our tactics, everything, we will get even farther in this competition indeed."

The Alpine Union beats United West Indic States and qualifies for the round of 16

Foaktu, Republic of Falatulu, Free Republics - (NAP) The Alpine Union easily beat United West Indic States 4-1 and qualified for the round of 16 as the 1st seed from group C. Being the C1 seed is important, as the team avoids Abanhfleft (1st seed from group D) in the first round. Some regulars took a rest for the final game, including Zofia Kwietniewska, Krzysztof Januszkiewicz, Amelia Zalwowska and Jean-François Kleineheismann . Jennifer O'Byrne, Slawomir Skrzeszewski, Cristiano Fernando and Kevin O'Maoilsheachlainn were in the starting XI. 3 of them were top players from Great Caledonia and North Hybernia (the team Drawkland hates so much) when it was an independent country.

The Alpine Union attacked at the 14th minute when Yannick Ksiezniakiewicz passed to Cristiano Fernando who passed to Sarah Schroffenegger who dribbled with the ball and made a cross to Zbigniew Zajaczkowski who shoots and scores. 4 minutes later, Slawomir Skrzeszewski made a long pass to Pawel Wawrzynkiewicz who dribbled and passed to Cristiano Fernando who shoots. Player #2 touches the ball with his right hand and it's a penalty! Zbigniew Zajaczkowski takes the penalty. He shoots in the lower right corner while goalkeeper #1 dives to the other side and it's a goal for the Bisons! The score is 2-0. The Bisons are attacking again at the 45 + 1 minute when Przemyslaw Tkocz passed to Cristiano Fernando who dribbled with the ball and made a header pass to Kevin O'Maoilsheachlainn who heads the ball right into the net and it's 3-0 Alpine Union at the halftime!

At the start of the 2nd half, coach Wlodzimierz Jastrzebowski decided to add another former Great Caledonia and North Hybernia player on the field. Slawomir Skrzeszewski moved to the side while Tearlach MacEachthighearna subbed in. Przemyslaw Zawistowski subbed out to make room for MacEachthighearna. 3 minutes later Player #8 passed to Player #10 who made a cross to Player #9 who shoots and scores. The Alpine Union was leading 3-1. The Bisons scored again at the 77th minute when Weronika Zubrowska passed to Alicja Jedrzejczyk, who subbed in at the 63rd minute. Jedrzejczyk dribbled with the ball and tries to pass to Cristiano Fernando but Player #4 intercepts the pass and tries to pass to #7 but Yannick Ksiezniakiewicz intercepts the pass and shoots from 40 meters and it's a goal for the Alpine Union! The Reprezentacja Alpejski is now leading 4-1 and this is the final score.

The Alpine Union finished 1st in group C with 4 wins in 4 games and a goal differential of +11, which is the best goal differential in the tournament. If we had seeds from 1 to 16 instead of bingo seeds (C1, D2), the Bisons would be the top seed but instead we're the C1 seed and play against D2, which is Omerica. If the corrupted nation of Alpine Union can beat Les Incorrigibles, then the Reprezentacja Alpejski will play against the winner between North Prarie and Central Shaneville and if the Bisons wins again (which isn't so sure), they will play against the winner between E1, F2, G1 and H2, which could be Drawkland. Coach Krzysztof Januszkiewicz just put 4 former Great caledonia and North Hybernia players in the line up against United West Indic States, is he preparing the team to play against Drawkland?

Alpine Union's next opponent is Omerica and the regular starting XI is expected to be on the field against Les oiseaux.

Two sparkling, fresh nations, both so eager to take on the international scene that they tackled this tournament without any sort of reservation. But then again, they were as far apart as could be. Adab tackled the group stage with such enthusiasm that they provided not one but three potential golden boots. Their vigour in front of goal and capacity to regroup when facing an impending collapse had not only seen them top their group, but also excite their supporters and charm the neutral fans.

The track record of Karulicja stood in sharp contrast as it was hard to find a side amongst the sweet sixteen that had failed to captivate the minds as much as the blue-white. Since their opener, they had scored a measly three goals - two of which by substitutes - and only scraped through at the expense of Kavagrad via a disciplined defensive line. Something for which Dusan Azzini could earn credits nationally but which didn't bring much joy across the border.

As same yet different were the two men who lead the way as their squads walked out into Podvez Field. Both wore the gloves and the captain's ribbon. And both must have been stunned by the sound of sixty thousand who had traveled north to witness this decider. Nonetheless, they were as far apart as could be.

For Roberto Moscardelli, this tournament had confirmed him as a leading figure of the national line-up. Three consecutive clean sheets, each underlined with a few key saves, had been vital to squeeze through. It had even gotten him the nickname Spiderman - which struck Moscardelli as preposterous. Not that he said no to the implied honour, but his net, his web was kept clean. And he wasn't the type to bother with cartoons.

Contrasted to the consistency of his adversary, Marramzi's ride took the turns of a rollercoaster. At some points, scouts across the multiverse were scribbling his name in their notebooks over his maturity and presence. Both some gaffes, most notably against Maryloupe made ths same talent hunters hope they wrote it in pencil.

Flag in hand, Moscardelli took his time to view his conculeague. The kid had talent and dignity, that was clear for all to see. But this was no time for kindness. Roberto had long thought about how he would handle it but when they leaned close to shake hands and exchange formalities, he whispered under his breath.

"You might get another Maryloupe tonight. And another..."

The pictures of the official moment, a key day in the football history of both nations, sported a slightly flabbergasted Marramzi and a wide grin from Moscardelli as they faced the photographers. One would say that the psychological warfare had given the first battle to the underdogs.

But when Roberto walked to his goal, taping and retaping the velcro of his gloves one last time, he didn't feel victorious at all.

"Don't worry kid, it happens to the best" he wanted he had said deep down, "and the way you recovered showed class."

He shook his head. Usually, Roberto could focus on a game as no other but now, thoughts were fighting for his attention. The cheeky smile had disappeared.

Maybe football was war - but war only has losers.

CENTRAL SHANEVILLE HIT ROCKY ROAD
A few nights ago Central Shaneville returned to Soccer Palace to face Britonisea with qualifying from Group B to the Last 16 on the line, the fans were up in arms as the national anthems played with both sides applauding one another as their respective anthems. The game kicked off but with nothing notable happening despite a few chances from both sides in the first twenty five minutes, fans and players started to turn off which allowed Britonisea to score a surprise goal due to poor Central Shaneville defending due to the low morale of the first 25 minutes. The half time whistle blew with Britonisea in the lead and Central Shaneville left mentally questioning their sudden switch off.

When the players emerged for the second half Britonisea tried to make it 2-0 but Central Shaneville, once again in the second half, found their feet and started going on the offence. Britonisea seemed confused and shocked at the sudden tenacity and intensity of the Central Shaneville offence as David Vujanic reminded Britonisea just what they were dealing with as Vujanic hit a crossed ball into the net to equalise the game.

Later on in the game substitutions were made, Britonisea tried to strengthen their strikers with their changes whilst Central Shaneville made changes to boost their defence. It seemed to have worked as Josh Smith took the ball of a Britonisea midfielder and once again just like against The Orion Islands charged through to the box and shot it into the net with extreme power to give Central Shaneville the lead.

As the final minutes of the game approached Britonisea tried their best to equalise but to no succession as the final whistle blew, Central Shaneville were through to the Last 16 in their debut. There was major celebrations to be made whilst Jay Bucks said that theres alot still to do if we want to get to the quarter finals.

Which brings us onto tonights game and its a game that Central Shaneville are dreading because its against one of the favourites of the competition at this stage, due to their unbeaten group stage run, North Prarie. Jay Bucks commented on this saying that the adrenaline is deffinetly running and that Central Shaneville wont go down without a fight. North Prarie seemed confident in the fact that they, on paper, should destroy the unranked side but in the Independents Cup and a strong performance from Central Shaneville so far no one knows what to expect from Central Shaneville or North Prarie respectively.

As for the Lineup for Central Shaneville for tonights match, Jay Bucks has gone with a very mixed side whilst keeping the +2 Style of play as he believes mixing it up and putting out players from both lineups used in the groups could be the way to beat North Prarie.

A Dance with Football
A look into the lives of the people involved in Adabian football and those associated with them

Chapter 5: The Girl

Taymour Frangieh had always been somewhat insecure about his position on the national football team. He was a minority in every way he could think of; he came from an upper - not even upper-middle, upper - class family while most of his teammates were from the middle and working classes, he was Christian in a team mostly composed of Muslims, and he was one of the only two 17-year-olds (the other being Salman al-Muntar) in a team otherwise dominated by 18- and 19-year-olds. Even among a bunch of teenagers, he was and felt like the most teenage of them all, and it always annoyed him whenever the other players lightheartedly brought up those aforementioned points.

But give credit where credit is due: far from breaking into the national team by virtue of wealth and connections, he made it in because of pure skill. With ten years having passed since the suspension of the Football Association, it was decided that the time had come to give Adabian football and the national team a fresh start. Banned and unwilling to take in any players from before the suspension - they had aged ten whole years and their achievements, whatever they were and regardless of whether or not they were involved - had been tainted by the scandals anyway - newly-appointed manager Saad Kaykali and his staff set out to find the most able and intelligent football players out of the country's teenagers. Trials were held across the country at the city level, then at the governorate level, culminating in a three-day national trial at the Adab City Stadium, where the last 250 men standing were to be whittled down to the eleven players of the national team.

And Taymour was there, at his own initiative, having made it all the way from the Beirut city trial. He did it despite opposition from his parents, who feared that it would distract him too much from school - he was a high school student, for God's sake - and thought it was a waste of time. After all, with so many competitors, what were the odds that Taymour would make it to the governorate trial, or even to the national one? As good as the boy was with the ball, there were surely many who were more talented and had devoted more of their time to the sport.

They never were supportive of his ambition to be a football player in the first place, especially when they were still unsure just how long the suspension would last. A quiet and analytical boy who, whenever he wasn't playing football, found solace in books, Taymour's parents thought he had the potential to be a lawyer and encouraged him to study law. It stunned them when Taymour made it to the national trial, and it amazed them when he made it to the starting eleven. Out of the hundreds of thousands who participated in the trials, their boy had somehow made it to the top at the tender age of seventeen. His parents had known him as a boy who loved football, like so many others; they never knew him as a football prodigy. Taymour, his parents, and Kaykali came to an agreement: he would be allowed to play for the national team and chase his dreams of becoming a professional football player, but he would also undergo homeschooling and, when the time came, attend university; his education would not be forsaken in the name of football.

Despite Taymour's withdrawn nature, he quickly won over his teammates with his skill and an underrated, if rarely used, ability for dark humor and sarcasm. Though he managed to establish a rapport with all his teammates, his greatest - and first - friend in the team was the captain, goalkeeper Mohammed Marramzi, who welcomed him into the team with open arms from the very beginning and encouraged him to interact with his teammates and vice versa. Mohammed, about whom the boss once commented that "leadership is just in his blood", devoted himself to his role as captain and constantly sought to uplift his teammates in any way possible. Taymour, for his part, saw in the keeper a constant and reassuring voice whenever he doubted his own abilities. He also grew close to Ephraim Orlev, the only Jew in the team, who bonded over the occasional feeling that they did not belong in the team and what they perceived to be their minority status there.

The team trained long and hard for their debut in the Independents Cup. They were well-aware that the entire country's hopes rested on them to restore Adabian football to its former glory after long periods of scandals, violence, and mismanagement and an entire decade of suspension. Day after day passed in the training camp, just outside Adab City, as the boss diligently drilled them in the ways of football. No one in the team bothered to keep track of just how many days they trained; they were simply too busy and, as far as they were concerned, the length of their training was nothing compared to the possibility of achieving international glory. They were, after all, eleven teenagers straight out of high school and university; the idea of breaking out of the monotony of their everyday life in such a way was very tempting to them, especially when they remembered that the Independents Cup was but a stepping stone to the Baptism of Fire and the World Cup.

Three weeks ago
Adab City

But now the flight to the Free Republics was three days away, and the boss decided to call it a day and give the players time to rest before the flight. He suggested that they get together at someone's house to celebrate the end of training. They agreed on Mohammed's house, which - though it was modest compared to the Frangieh family's mansion - was quite large, to say the least, and lent itself well to an occasion of this type.

It wasn't a wild party, nor did it resemble one; the Marramzi family had dragged out that old long table, which they claimed were a gift to one of their ancestors from some 17th-century Ottoman grand vizier, and they ate, told stories, and laughed over plates of kebab and dolma, among others. Salman Marramzi, the gracious host and Mohammed's father, was at the head of the table and looking positively radiant as he listened to the young men gathered in his house and told a few stories of his own, mostly regarding his son's childhood. Taymour, being himself, mostly kept quiet and smiled and laughed along. The boss delivered a short speech, praising his team and praying for success in the cup, after which the host rose from his seat.

"Thank you very much. That was a great speech indeed, Mr. Kaykali," the elder Marramzi opened his speech, beaming. Taymour was three seats to his left. "To be honest here, I don't know what to say. I just want to wish you all the best as you head to the Independents Cup in... the Free Republics, I believe? Honestly, I'm just amazed that you have done so much and gone so far at your age. I know you haven't actually played in the cup yet, but going through those trials, making it to the national team, and then undergoing all the training... it's simply amazing and I admire you very much for that. Tonight, I am a proud Adabian, but most of all I am a proud father. To watch my son make it all the way to the national team, something which his mother and I hadn't expected... I really don't know what to say, but only that you all are the greatest, and especially you, Mohammed. We are proud of you and we will support you..." He stopped to drink from his glass before adding, "...as long as you remember to study, son. Don't forget about the university."

That addition brought out a chorus of laughs echoing across the dining room, not least from Taymour, though it also made him think about his situation again. Though the Marramzis, too, wanted their son to continue their education, they were generally much more supportive of his football ambitions than Taymour's parents were of their own son's dreams, at least before he actually made it to the starting eleven. But all thoughts about the family were banished from his mind as the door slowly opened behind him. She crept into the room as quietly as she could, her footsteps making only the slightest of sounds in the room. Maybe it had something to do with her shoes?

"Ah yes, gentlemen, this is my daughter Maira, Mohammed's older sister," Salman introduced the girl, who came over to him and dutifully kissed his hand. "She just came back from studying with, where did you go again? Ah yes, she studied at her friend's house. You know, high school. She's eighteen, after all, she's going to have her final exams soon. Then she's going to graduate, and then she's off to university. Kids, they grow too fast nowadays, don't they, Mr. Kaykali? Do you have children, Mr. Kaykali? I don't remember."

"Yes," the boss said. "One daughter, Aida, with my late wife the princess. She's a sweet girl, looks so much like her mother and is just as smart as her."

"Kids are one of the greatest blessings that God could give us, Mr. Kaykali," said Salman. "Where do you send Aida to? Which school, I mean."

Whatever answer the boss gave the elder Marramzi, Taymour didn't hear it; his sight was focused on the girl and he didn't know what kept him looking at her. Maybe it was the brown curly hair, or the sweet smile she gave when she excused herself, or something else. He smiled too, though he didn't even realize it until a few seconds later. His head turned, following her to the door, and he swore to himself that she looked at him along the way, that they were looking at each other for a moment, that she appeared to blush and smile and nod at him as she closed the door behind her.

Everything about her was wonderful, now that Taymour thought about it. She could see it in her face, in her manners, even in her hair. And she looked like a good girl, and he kept thinking about her even after she had gone. Mohammed is lucky to have such a good sister. Smart, pretty... and just great. But after almost an entire minute of thinking about her, he began to have doubts. Maybe this isn't like the way I imagined it to be. This is... too good? Maybe I got carried too far away by my imagination.

He turned to his plate, only to remember that he had eaten all the kebab.

Independents Cup MD5 Review
Mercedini vs. Northwest Kalactin
@ PetroDome - Petrograd, Free Republics

Good evening and welcome back to the 5th edition of the Independents Cup in the Free Republics, it's been a long time coming but we will finally say goodbye to the group stages after today with all groups tying up their loose ends with the fifth and final match day. Mercedini can secure their spot in the knockout rounds if they avoid defeat against today's opponents in Northwest Kalactin, while the Kalactanians can qualify if they simply beat Mercedini here in Petrograd tonight. The third nation in the qualification equation is Central Shaneville who idealistically need to win to qualify, although they only need a point to qualify if Kalactin lose as well. A bizarre set of results would see Shaneville eliminated, which would only happen if Shaneville lost and the Mercedini-Kalactin match ended in a draw. Nevertheless, let's see who will be competing in the Round of 16 of the multiverse's fourth regional tournament.

Independents Cup: Cutting It Fine

FINAL SCORE
IAC | MD5

NORTHWEST KALACTIN 2
Dakota 38', Sednah 84'
MERCEDINI 3
Billic 18', Karlovic 33', Alotic 66' (P)

Petrograd, Free Republics
Despite plenty of nerves at the start of the tournament that the team could experience a couple of shocks against them, Mercedini completed a clean sweep of the group to see themselves through to the Round of 16 of the Independents Cup, where they have been put into a rather tricky half of the draw, with the potential of facing Abanhfleft in the quarter-finals plus the Free Republics or Flardania in the semi finals, and with only Drawkland and the Alpine Union being the known threats in the other half of the draw, Mercedini will have a harder draw than most to get to the final and claim their first IAC trophy. For now, they will play Acronius in the Round of 16, with them finishing second behind North Prarie in Group A with one win, one loss and two draws. The draw comes after Mercedini were pushed all the way by a stubborn Northwest Kalactin side, with the Golden Eagles eventually winning out by three goals to two to secure the top spot in the group. That result, combined with Central Shaneville's parallel win means those two nations will qualify and Northwest Kalactin will be sent home after a short stay in Petrograd.

As for the match in Petrograd, it was a case of all the pressure being piled on one team rather that both teams under the kosh to perform. Lyndainium knew that it was the opposition who needed to come out and score if they wanted to put their name in the hat for the knockout rounds. For Mercedini, they just needed to keep the Kalactanians at arms length for the duration of the match to book their spot into the next round, but that would be difficult knowing the previous history between the two sides. The match got underway with seemingly less people compared to the previous match match featuring Mercedini, quite possibly due to the relaxed nature of the match and the fact that it wasn't featuring regional sporting rivals. Mercedini got on the scoresheet early in the first half through their talismanic striker Sam Billic, with the Myrmidon man connecting well with Alotic. The Pelethas striker found space on the right hand side of the box, with his marker doing a decent job at keeping any cross from coming in. Alotic faked a chip before rolling the ball low into the mixer, where Billic took a touch to take it away from his defender and slot under the sprawling body of Jakerin in the Kalactin goal for the match opener.

That left the opposition in a bit of a pickle with Kalactin needing a goal but not wanting to open themselves up to another Mercedinian attack. Dillan and Sednah were both looking dangerous upfront and were actively taking on the Mercedinian defence with their quick feet and darting runs. The defence were holding firm, keeping their goals conceded column to that single goal against Britonisea for the time being. NWK's woes only deepened when the Golden Eagles found a second just after the half-hour mark, with Tihon Tide prodigy Johan Karlovic netting the second goal following a defensive mix-up at the back. It was Presic who began the move, streaking upfield and giving the Kalactin wingers all sorts of headaches as he cut in and out and advancing up the pitch. An early diagonal cross was headed out by Hue Grebv but no one was there to collec the second ball, so Karlovic took it upon himself to finish the move and crack an absolute rocket to the corner for Mercedinian goal to savour. Mercedini were in clear daylight in the match.

That wasn't all she wrote for the first half, as Kalactin regrouped after that second goal to have the deficit, with Alton Swifts defender Jack Dakota heading in from a corner to give his team hope that they could spring a surprise and come back from a two goal deficit. Mercedini held back after that warning sign, and held back to keep the number of chances at bay. With that drastic tactical change, it was unsurprising that nothing else came of the half, with Mercedini going in satisfied with a 2-1 lead after 45 minutes.

After the teams had a chance to refresh and review their first half performances, it was back to the grind for the twenty two players on the pitch. One key thing to note is that there looked to be a potential kit clash with Mercedini playing in their blue and black kit despite being classified as the away team, while their opponents wore their home light blue kits, reflecting their flag design. The two blues competed on the pitch side by side, exchanging passing moves and holding each other up in the middle of the pitch. Mercedini were calmly going about their business as time ticked away on the Kalactin dream, the opposition had to do something quick if they wanted to put their name in the hat for the knockout rounds. That didn't come to fruition as Alotic reinstated Mercedini's two goal advantage in the match from the spot, coolly placing the ball down the middle to state his case for his inclusion in the team for the knockout rounds.

Thats could have knocked Mercedini for six there and then, but to their credit, they kept at is for the entirety of the game to perhaps nick a point and hope Shaveville tripped up against Britonisea. It was a moutian to climb but Kalactin were in it for the long haul, having come this far only to fall at the final hurdle. Things got interesting with just over five minutes left to in the game when Sednah broke free of his defender to smash in an emphatic second goal for Kalactin which went in off the post, a truly unstoppable shot. That gave Kalactin another bout of hope, but it was too little too late as Mercedini held out for the victory to record a clean sweep in the group stages, something which the fans were happy about as they cheered from the stands. As mentioned before, Mercedini will play Acronius in the Round of 16, as it finshed in Petrograd; Mercedini 3, Northwest Kalactin 2.

Space race is on to knockout round

Even though the Astronauts of Space are experienced of every Independent Cup competition from #1 until the current #5 they still do not earn any ranking of the tournament and begin as the underdog considered by the oddsmaker.

It does not matter to Space. Of course the Astronauts could not dream to beat a team like Drawk land who are the defending runner up of the tournament. But it was good results all winning against the other teams in Group G.

It was in the last match against Savalen that Space have brought in the new uniform with lots of colors taken directly from the heart of the galaxy. It was a new look instead of the classic starfield design with purple. So many colors

Image

And so many goals. Space have scored five goals against Savalen which means the Astronauts have been advanced to the next phase of competition even though they are not ranked. While they are not the only team without rank in the next stage it is also Central Shaneville, the Penguin Land, Nurwiji Karulicja and The Frozen Forest. Space is the more experienced team with no rank and maybe it will be enough to advance another round.

Even if they do not the Astronauts have had an exciting event. The all time record victory over Savalen put Space with the most goals scored in Group G. Astronauts around the galaxy celebrated and the vast emptiness honored the occasion by quickly passing a legislation to officially change the nations flag to reflect the vibrant colors that have brought such good luck to the space team competing in the Independants Cup 5.

This is the new flag of Space:

Golden Loons striker Bradley Francis celebrating with teammates Terrell Miller and Erick Amerigo after scoring in their 5-0 win over Ashkam
Are we a power now? | Golden Loons go undefeated in group stage of IAC5.
By Kay Finnigan, Junior Soccer Correspondent | @KayFinniganSBT

(FREE REPUBLICS) Erm, this isn't normal.
Sure, the Independents' Cup isn't the Baptism of Fire, World Cup, or even Cup of Harmony. Yes, almost half the field in this years' Cup is unranked. But can I tell you something? I really don't care. The Golden Loons are undefeated in the group stages of this IAC, and almost everything is perfect. Yes, perfect. Let's break down what happened in the 4 games of the Group Stages and get some takeaways from the thing, not to mention previews from our Round of 16 clash with Central Shaneville.

MD1: North Prarie 2-0 Funky Fresh Beats
Bret 22', Mack 76'

One of the biggest questions heading into the tournament was whether CLC FC wonderkid should start over Durham City FC veteran Chris Rios. Bret proved the haters wrong with this performance. Bret was lively from the start of the game, and almost scored a beautiful shot from the edge of the box in the 12th minute. Then Bret got his goal. A beautiful through ball from Kyle Schmitz came to the 22 year old, who took two touches to get past the defender, then fired a knuckleball into the left side netting. The AllMart Dome crowd, mostly filled with Prarieans who made the trip to the Free Republics, exploded in cheers. North Prarie went into the half with not only a 1-0 lead, but 57% possession and 9 shots to 2.
The second half was different. Even though the Prarieans were obviously in control, and Noel Eriksen saved a dangerous rebound that very well could have been an equalizer. In the 76th minute, Philip Tran drew a free kick from 37 yards out. Amerigo sent a curling beauty into the box, where Luke Mack darted past defenders and was alll alone (closest FFB defender was 5 feet away) when he got the ball. Mack tapped the ball in mid-air over the head of the goalkeeper and into the net, effectively sealing the game for North Prarie. It wouldn't matter anyway, as the only shot FFB had between the goal and the final whistle was a weak chance that bounced right to Eriksen. The boys got a standing ovation when they walked back into their Gareau hotel room after the game.

MD2: North Prarie 1-0 Nicana
Francis 49'

This game, although again dominated by North Prarie, was much closer. Nicana kept the Golden Loons honest throughout the first half, frequently replicating our guys and going on fast-paced attacks, tiring the defense out. It almost looked like they were playing Loonball, the Prariean play style thats like a less exciting counter attack, done by passing the ball through the midfield off a clearance then playing through balls to strikers or wingers, who then cut in and develop attacks on the edge of the box. The first half ended 0-0, with an even shot count of 8-8.
It seems like Alan Willis lit a spark in his half-time talk, because North Prarie came out aggressive, playing Loonball even faster than normal. This capitalized. merely 4 minutes into the half, when Bradley Francis got a through ball to the penalty area and put in past the Nicanan keeper attempting the kick save. During the second half the Prarieans were peppering Nicana with shots, with the shot total coming out to be 19-11 in favor of us at the end of the game, North Prarie almost doubling their count from the first half and Nicana splitting theirs in half. During the closing minutes, the Prariean faithful were clearly nervous, so when the final whistle blew at Gem of the Oceans Stadium a roar went up from the north end, while the south end went quiet from their "COME ON NICANA!' cheers.

MD3: North Prarie 5-0 Ashkam
Francis 4', 16', 67', Tran 51', Niles 70'

This game was a pleasant surprise for Prariean players and fans alike, since the game v. Ashkam was expected to be fairly competitive, as the Ashkamites came into the tournament with a decent 117 World KPB rank. Golden Loons fans strong at the Gem of the Oceans seemed to forget those worries early on, however, as Braldey Francis got the boys off to an amazing start with an amazing goal, curling home a one-timer dime from Brice Bret. Francis went to the corner and did the Shot with his teammates, a dance from ultra-hit video game Pillowfort. As the Golden Loons played it up between those goals, the fans in the north end were going nuts, so it was no surprise that a lot of beer and scarves were thrown into the air as Bradley Francis scored another early goal, this time a 16th minute free-kick that seemingly surprised everyone in the stadium, as the left-footed Francis curled it into the top-left corner as a pose to his normal curl right, the Ashkam keeper, positioned in the center of the goal, didn't react soon enough and watched in awe as the kick flew straight into the side-netting. The Prarieans went into the second half up 2-0, and they kept pumping, with Philip Tran putting the ball into an open net after Brice Bret faked out the keeper by running in then dishing a back heel to Tran. And then Francis scored AGAIN, this time a lob pass over the keeper from Matthew Oliver that he just had to tap into the net. Finally, the Golden Loons got their last goal, a Loic Niles amazer that took just a touch from a Erick Amerigo pass to go over the Ashkamite goalkeeper a foot of his line. When the whistle blew, the Golden Loons fans applauded the players, who sang the national anthem along with the supporters. The players were seen having fun at a local ice cream spot after the match, and were once again applauded when walking back into their Gareau hotel.

MD4: North Prarie 1-0 Acronius
May 65'

The match that closed the Prarieans' group stages before their MD5 bye was supposed to be a good one, at indeed it was. The Golden Loons and the 47-ranked Acronians had already met at a friendly in Durham, which Acronius won 1-0. One of the only surprises was how much the Golden Loons outnumbered the Acronian fans in the AllMart Dome (cool transparent roof, by the way), because the game was certainly as evenly-matched as expected. The possession stats and the end of the first half were 50%-50%. The shots on target were 5-5. And most importantly, the game was 0-0. But in the second half Willis lit that spark again, because North Prarie came out fast and aggressive, and they got their goal. A 65th minute free kick 32 yards out was taken by Amerigo, who whipped the ball in to what looked like would be a goal anyway, but Jon May got his head on it and deflected it to the left of the Acronian goalkeeper who was jumping to his right. 1-0 North Prarie. The captain raced to the corner and pumped up the already-screaming fans in blue and gold. North Prarie held their lead using the 'offense is the best defense' strategy for the rest of the game, one Bradley Francis shot even needing to be cleared off the line by an Acronian defender. The Prarieans had added to their lead in their group-winning campaign, and were undefeated

Two line or less takeaways and Central Shaneville previews

Brice Bret has been amazing, proving all his doubters wrong. Bret leads the team in assists and even has a goal to his name, so don't be surprised if he A. sparkles in the knockouts and B. Gets noticed by foreign clubs and heads off to play international football at bigger footballing nations.

Noel Eriksen has also held firm throughout the group stages, keeping 4 clean sheets and pretty much securing his spot as the starting keeper for the Copa South Pacifica and even the World Cup qualifiers.

Central Shaneville's attack looks dangerous, as David Vujanic and especially Josh Smith have sparkled throughout the group stages. Expect the midfield to play balls through for Smith to charge through the attack. However....

Central Shaneville's defense looks shaky, as last game they lost a ton of morale after a scoreless first 25, and allowed Britonisea to score. That will probably be different against us, but expect Francis, Bret and Co., to capitalise after that start.

The lineup for tonight's match looks unchanged, with Willis going with a fairly normal starting XI for the Round of 16 clash.
GK: Eriksen
LB: Girard
CB: May (C)
CB: Rose
RB: Mack
CDM: Schmit
LW: Bret
CM: Tran
RW: Amerigo
ST: Francis
ST: Miller

The clash with our West Pacifican opponents tonight will be viewable on SPSN, PSN, PNT, and streamable on SPSN Go, PNT Online, and Stonebridge Times Streaming. Whether your on your couch, at a pub, watch party or even the game, remember to get behind the team as we look to go to the first quarterfinal in a major tournament. Go Golden Loons!

Adab reaches Independents Cup quarterfinals with 3-2 victory over Karulicja

The Adabian national football team has reached the Independents Cup 5 quarterfinals, securing their spot with a 3-2 victory over Karulicja in a tense match which had both teams on the edge for most of it and left some players visibly drained of energy at the end of it.

Fans and bookmakers were divided on whether the young Adabian team, who defied all odds by even making it to the round of 16, could overcome Dusan Azzini's men and wondered if they had pushed their luck too far.

But once again they defied the odds and silenced the naysayers with a performance marked by great tenacity and teamwork which allowed them to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

The tension started before the match had even begun, with Adabian goalkeeper Mohammed Marramzi pictured having what appeared to be a staring contest with his Karulicja counterpart Roberto Moscardelli, with some noting that the young Marramzi appeared to be intimidated by Moscardelli.

Adab opened the match with a blistering attack on Karulicja, eager to break through the wall of midfielders and exploit flaws in Azzini's notoriously defense-oriented tactics - they had scored just three goals in the entire duration of the competition - but were unable to even endanger Moscarelli, watching from the penalty area as his teammates duked it out with and man-marked Enlilbani Yargab, Adanirari Uhwan, and Shamsuiluna Zambiya, who constantly found themselves deprived of the ball whenever an opportunity opened for them to reach Moscarelli.

Though Adab was the aggressor in the early part of the first half, it fell to their opponents to score the first goal of the match. In the 11th minute, with a kick by Yargab too slow to reach Uhwan, the latter was beaten to the ball by Karulicja's Blazo Ujkashi, who - along with Josip Pajic - raced past Adab's midfielders, passing the ball back and forth between themselves along the way. At the pivotal moment, Pajic passed the ball to Anis Khalloufi, whose finishing was so swift that Marramzi did not even have time to turn his head as the ball flew past him and landed on the net.

With the score showing 0-1, the Adabians were now determined to close the gap, but found it difficult to break through the opposition's midfielders, let alone mount a sustained attack against Karulicja's net. Progress was made in the 17th minute, as Malik Aminuddin deftly escaped several Karulicjan players, but as he was about to pass the ball to Zambiya he was tackled by Ciro Piccini and fell, resulting in a chorus of protests from the Adabian team. Marramzi approached his teammates from the penalty area and had to hold back a visibly enraged Ephraim Orlev. Piccini promptly received a yellow card for his action.

Though the Adabians tried to launch another attack, the momentum had slipped away. Their defenders appeared to show signs of exhaustion and let the ball slip past them a few times, for which they were soon punished. Far from equalizing, they were forced to watch as Karulicja increased their lead in the 28th minute, as a corner kick by Mauro Pagliarulo reached Piccini, who - in the midst of the chaos now engulfing the penalty area as everyone seemingly converged on him - completed an impressive header which catapulted the ball onto the back of the net, triggering on-pitch celebrations by the Karulicjan players.

Two goals behind and worried that his team was becoming demoralized, manager Saad Kaykali was heard urging his team to "press on, press on." The Karulicjans, meanwhile, began to run out of steam. Another attack on the Adabian net was stopped in the 36th minute as the ball was wrested from them by defender Enmerkar Abdulmahrim, who, having missed the ball a few times earlier in the match, was now seemingly enjoying a second wind. He zigzagged his way past the Karulicjans before passing the ball to Orlev.

Flanked by Aminuddin and Zambiya, Orlev left many of the Karulicjan players behind and made a dash for the net. As Moscardelli confronted him, he passed the ball to Yargab who promptly shot it into the net, making it 2-1, further reinvigorating the Adabians and reviving their hopes of reaching the quarterfinals. The rest of the first half saw the ball passed back and forth between the Adabians and the Karulicjans, with the Adabians pressing on and the Karulicjans seemingly unsure whether to counterattack or revert to their defensive tactics.

The second half saw the Karulicjans start with the ball. They sought to make the most out of this opportunity by launching another counterattack and secure victory, but Kaykali had given orders to man-mark Pagliarulo and Piccini, which was done so effectively by Abdulmahrim and Shamsidad Nahmoud that those two Karulicjans were never even able to reach the penalty area.

In the 61st minute, Nahmoud seized the ball from a visibly tiring Pagliarulo and passed it to Taymour Frangieh, who dribbled deep into Karulicja's side of the pitch before executing a well-calculated shot which sent the ball flying across the width of the pitch to Salman al-Muntar, who in turn passed it to Uhwan, who then passed it back to al-Muntar for the finish. Al-Muntar's shot was too quick for Moscardelli to intercept, and the score now turned 2-2.

Their lead lost, the tiring Karulicjans now reverted to their original defensive tactics, complete with the wall of midfielders, bent on at least preventing another Adabian goal and forcing extra time. But in the 85th minute, with Graziano Ceccarelli and Christos Gialousis distracted by al-Muntar, the latter tore open a hole in the Karulicjan defense as he passed the ball to Ephraim Orlev, who charged towards the net as Zambiya followed him. Orlev's shot, from just outside the penalty area, was devastatingly accurate and found the back of the net, sealing victory for the Adabians with a final score of 3-2.

Kaykali: "An impressive performance by both sides"

Adabian manager Kaykali, speaking at the post-match press conference, praised both teams for "giving it all" and producing a match that would be long remembered.

"To be honest, I was on my toes for the entire match and I wouldn't want to go through it again," Kaykali said. "But you must admit that it was indeed an impressive match any way you look at it. Both teams fought hard and both teams fought to the end. Thankfully we managed to pull through before the final whistle. It was truly an impressive performance by both sides."

Kaykali spent much of the press conference talking about and praising his notably young team. None of his players, he pointed out, was older than 19, and "they had done the country proud, and many other young people too" by making it to the quarterfinals in their very first competition, and the first for the country since the end of the ten-year suspension period.

"It's that impressive power of youth," he said. "The spirit, the ferocity, and the excitement. But at the same time I see great tenacity even in the face of insurmountable odds, forged by the training and the matches that they've undergone. They're the best hope that we have right now, as a country."

As usual, Kaykali did not neglect to offer his commiserations to the defeated side. "Dusan Azzini and his men have performed very well during this tournament," he said. "Dusan may very well be the best tactician that I've faced so far, and he did give my boys hell there. Good luck to Dusan, good luck to Karulicja, and good luck to the players. I look forward to seeing them again on the pitch someday."

A Dance with Football
A look into the lives of the people involved in Adabian football and those associated with them

Chapter 6: Guy and Girl

Three weeks ago
Adab City

Taymour Frangieh wondered to himself how all eleven of them suddenly ended up in Mohammed Marramzi's bedroom, doing the things that they were now doing. They were at Mohammed's house for some sort of farewell dinner before their flight to the Free Republics. That was supposed to be the only thing in their agenda, but then their driver went for a pee and stayed inside the bathroom for longer than anyone expected, because - as it turned out - he also needed to poop. The boss, Mr. Kaykali, apparently decided he should linger in the house for a while, as a matter of courtesy, and enjoy coffee on the front porch with Mohammed's father. The boys had finished the food and drank until their bellies were full, so in true teenage fashion they turned to the thing which was held in esteem by most people their age: video games.

And that's apparently how the Adabian national football team found themselves crammed in Marramzi's bedroom upstairs. Enlilbani Yargab and Shamsuiluna Zambiya were playing Total Football 18 on the console. By his own admission, Yargab was never that big of a gamer, and Zambiya was roundly beating him in their latest match, as the other teammates cheered them on. Eannatum al-Tikriti was drinking a can of soda which he had unceremoniously taken from the fridge downstairs. Ephraim Orlev had fallen asleep on Mohammed's bed, while Mohammed himself was lying on the floor, content with watching his teammates battle it out for video game supremacy, too lazy to drag himself up to his own bed. As for Taymour, he was lying on the bed next to Ephraim, reading Managing My Life by Sir Alex Ferguson, which Mohammed himself had read and then left on his bed.

And then he felt the call of nature. Having made a mental note of the last page he read, he jumped off the bed for the nearest bathroom, out of the bedroom and to the right, only to find that assistant manager Inimabakesh Thulus was inside. "Try the one downstairs," Mr. Thulus shouted from the inside, "but check if the driver isn't there anymore." Taymour rushed down the stairs, feeling nature's call growing louder, and - with the door open - promptly barged into the bathroom.

He emerged five minutes later a satisfied man, having ridden his belly of the feces. As he prepared to make his way upstairs, his attention turned to the black door a few feet in front and to his right. He remembered Mohammed mentioning something about a small library, mostly composed of his father's books. Taymour's family, too, maintained their own home library, which was surely larger than anything the Marramzis had to offer, but he wanted to see it for himself.

Turning his head in every direction to make sure nobody was around, Taymour slowly pushed the black door open. It was indeed the library, if you could call the room by that name. There were three shelves lining up in the center of the - somewhat small - room, and another two embedded on the wall. The first shelf was mostly history, scientific, and financial books, with a few on other subjects. Again turning his head and assuring himself that there wasn't anybody there, he closed the door behind and-

"Excuse me," Taymour jumped at the sound, calling out from behind. She was evidently taken by surprise too, gasping as she saw Taymour jump. "Hey, look, uh, don't be scared. You're one of Mohammed's teammates, right?"

"Well... yeah, I am," he replied apprehensively, not sure how to react. Slowly he turned around to see the source of the voice.

"Look, I don't mean to- oh." He knew her the instant he finally saw her, and she knew him too, but not his name. She was, of course, Mohammed's older sister Maira. "Oh, hi there, you're his sister, right? I- I'm sorry for disturbing. I think I'm-"

"No, wait, don't, it's alright," she cut him off, a little smile on her face. He could see her inch just a bit closer to him. She was carrying a book, but he couldn't see the title, for she was showing the back cover to him. "It's my fault here. I- I didn't mean to surprise you. I'm Maira, Mohammed's sister, and you're..."

"Taymour," he said somewhat hesistantly, prolonging each syllable. "Taymour Frangieh... I play with your brother Mohammed in the team." He tried to smile back out of politeness; it was easier than he thought. "Nice to meet you... Maira."

"Nice to meet you too," said Maira in that kind voice of hers. "I don't, you know, really follow football that much, so I tend to forget your names, the names of Mohammed's teammates."

"That's fine," he smiled. "Nothing to worry about." And out of nowhere, he tried to find something that they could talk about. "What's that book you're carrying, anyway?"

"Oh, this one?" she looked down at the book and turned it over so Taymour could see the title. "Well, it's, you know, a book by Darwin about worms, which most people call Worms." She lowered her head and squinted her eyes. "Or, if you go by the full title-"

"The Formation of Vegetable Mould through the Action of Worms," he completed her words.

"Wait, so you know-"

"I looked at the title." He calmly pointed at the book, which, having been turned by Maira, was now showing its front cover.

"Well..." She suddenly realized that she was out of words, and though she wasn't sure what prompted her, she couldn't help but laugh. And laugh loudly she did. And the sight of this girl laughing without any apparent reason was enough to make Taymour laugh too. "Well that's quite smart of you, I must admit."

"Can't help myself," Taymour said between laughs, gazing at the girl in front of him. Then he started for the door. "Look, it's nice meeting you... here, but the boys, you know, need me upstairs and they might get suspicious if I'm away for too long. I'm sure you understand."

"Oh, I understand very much," she said, grinning, as Taymour opened the door and crept past it, yet again looking around. "You're a smart guy, Taymour. Just keep doing what you do."

Taymour began to close the door, but as he did it he looked inside again. She was still standing there, smiling, holding her book tight. "And you're a smart girl, too." And then he closed the door.

#18 MERCEDINI
Rapidly Descending Barrier - "Loved Ones"
Tune : 5 Seconds Of Summer - "Youngblood"
Music: Rapidly Descending Barrier, Fransisco Gabrinelli • Lyrics: Rachel Nollov, Dominica Monza

Image

Following a fifteen edition break, Mercedini return to Britonisea for the 66th edition of the WorldVision Song Contest, hoping to win their first WorldVision as the nation is quickly approaching the twenty edition mark when it comes to participations at this prestigious contest. Mercedini have come close on multiple occasions, with their closest being two points away when Alicia Mocha was pipped by Nightom to the WorldVision trophy many moons ago. They have had a series of podium finishes in recent editions with Sabastion Sabatino finishing third a couple of editions ago. Now, ENM have finally confirmed their artist and song after many months of speculation by people at home, plus international betting sites eager to get the drop on any new related to the contest.

It will be peculiarly named 'Rapidly Descending Barrier' who will be sent to Telm City to represent Mercedini at the contest with the song they co-wrote especially for the contest with a series of other highly rated song writers, clearly sending out a statement of intent to the other artists in the contest. In a rare and surpring move, RDB will be sending a politicised song to the contest, something which has been discouraged by head honchoes at ENM to try and avoid alienating viewers and potential voters. The song will centre around themes existing around the criminal justice system, with may different messages intertwined in the song (harsher male sentences, one sided trials, begging the question and supposed 'witch trials' all included). It is the first song with a really serious meaning, and one of the first songs to openly criticise Mercedinian government policy in it's lyrics. It's sure to ignite a debate within the Mercedinian public, with hope that it will make foreign viewers ask questions, making it stick in their mind. Rapidly Descending Barrier will perform 18th in the final.

The song starts with the bang arranged on the main stage with the drummer in the back, the two guitarists either side with the main vocalist standing with his guitar at the front. The manned camera begins up to the side of the main vocalist as he stares out into the crowd, not staring at the camera as the spotlight reflects of his face as his eyes glisten in the light. There is a black and white filter on the camera, filming the entirety of the opening verse in a monochrome fashion, giving the viewers as home a bleak view into the world of the song, a large deviance from the usual happy song sent by the nation looking for their first victory. The camera moves around the singer before rotating out his fellow three band members, who are tuning their instruments before adjusting their microphones, looking determined to deliver a good performance

I’ll do anything to hold you, I’ll be only asking why
The injustice all runs through us, no wonder the angels cry
Maybe, she’s the one who’s crazy, I’m not the one that you should blame
I’ll state all my evidence but you know it will all end the same

The camera angle changes to an aerial shot which swoops in towards the side of the stage, taking in the performers still in their black and white hue on stage. The camera then circles midway into the audience as many heads and flags fly by, keeping the four band members in the middle as they sing behind their microphone stands with their instruments. Freddie, the main vocalist of the band, then sings into the central camera with his hair begin to droop as the sweat mixes with his hair gel, weighing it down. With the final line before the chorus kicking in, the screen fades to black as a transition is made to the chorus.

I run, and I run but you give me away, give me away. Trustless
I toss and I turn like I do every day, do every day

The vision returns to the screen as the colour returns to the performance. Flashes of red and white emerge from the darkness of the song from the lights around the stage and around the arena, while the LED screen remains dark, keeping the performance simple yet effective as the performance directors try to keep the focus on the song and it's lyrics, rather than overwhelming the performance with light and colour. The four band members are all strumming their guitars or beating their drums to the beat of the song, with shots of the performances intertwined with close-ups of the instruments being played. The other members get their time to shine as they support Freddie with their respective backing vocals.

Loved ones
Can you call me? Can you call me? I’m out of time
And they say I’m guilty with no alibi
Can you feel it? I can feel it. I’ll fight for my life (Ooo, ooo, ooo)
Loved ones
I am falling, I am falling, out of your sight.
And I’m afraid that I won’t see morning alive
It’s egregious, It’s egregious, the law doesn’t mind (Yeah ooo, ooo, ooo)

The manned camera returns to the stage as it approaches Freddie once again. He has stopped strumming his guitar as he holds the mocrohphe on it's stand as he places his lips onto the grill and sings as the camera closes in on the vocalist. The spotlights still remain on the four band members, with Freddie's signet ring reflecting some of the light into the camera, with his hair dropped even more onto his face, a quick swipe of the fingers puts his tufts of hair back into place, before the camera retracts back into the audience and is replaced by the central camera in the arena. Freddie stares deeply into the camera, as if singing to a certain someone watching at home.

You say I should believe but, baby, all I hear is lies
They took all I have from me, ain’t that such a big surprise
I’m through with the complications. You ready for your fall from grace?
Picking on those beneath you, I’ll watch you as your name’s disgraced

The second chorus kicks in with the same pattern and design as the first chorus with the flashing light penetrating the darkness of the stage and the surrounding arena. The camera angles on stage are slightly different with glitch effects added to the footage, adding to the chaos and the uncertainty to a simple performance, fitting the theme of what the song is trying to convey to the audience. The audience is sitting admirably with flew flags flying, with the seriousness of the song making it inappropriate for the audience to do anything other than simply sit and watch. The LED screen remains dark with the exceptions of thin red lines pulsing along the screen in time with the drum beats of the song.

The colours subside as the camera reverts back to the monochrome filer, white beams of light flash behind the performers in time with the guitar riffs with the camera coming circle the four band members spread out across the stage. Freddie looks down to hold his guitar in a more comfortable position to prepare and build up for the third chorus. The camera cuts to close-up of guitar strings being plucked, before reverting to an overhead shot of the four of them as they look up to meet it. Bright flashes of light and footage of drums being beaten form the transition for the next part of the song.

I run, and I run but you give me away, give me away. Trustless
I toss and I turn like I do every day, do every day
I’m living afraid that you’ll do it again, do it again to us.
Mmm, to us

The third chorus comes upon us as a series of long shots of the stage are shown one after the other, with the audience bathed in complete darkness with the bright lights of the Telm City stage flashing far in the distance, with the four band members barely visible as specs on the stage. RDB seem entranced by the music as they play their instrument and with purpose and intensity with the song quickly reaching it's climax. The thin red lines pulse across the screen in time with the synth rips which have faded into the song, adding to the intensity of the song.

Loved ones
I am falling, I am falling, out of your sight.
And I’m afraid that I won’t see morning alive
It’s egregious, It’s egregious, the law doesn’t mind (Yeah ooo, ooo, ooo)
Loved ones
I am falling, I am falling, out of your sight.
And I’m afraid that I won’t see morning alive
It’s egregious, It’s egregious, the law doesn’t mind (Yeah ooo, ooo, ooo)

Another return to the interlude of the song with the synths getting louder and louder as the song draws to it's natural close. The crowds are beginning to get onside with the tune of the song, with some flags beginning to wave with the drum beats and the guitar riffs all harmonising, something which is certainly on brand for the punk-rock band. One final part of the original chorus, with the lights flashing before coming to a halt with the final line of the song.

I run, and I run but you give me away, give me away. Trustless
I toss and I turn like I do every day, do every day

Loved ones
I am falling, I am falling, out of your sight.
And I’m afraid that I won’t see morning alive

The friendly Britonish crowd roars in applause as their friends complete their performance in their WorldVision Song Contest, with a couple of the band members pumping their fists to the crowd, only to receive an even bigger cheer as the lights come on, signalling the official end to the performance. Flags from many different nations are waving with a large group of Mercedinian fans bouncing up and down at the front of the stage, which the band acknowledge. 'Merci Britunyik, Grazij Telm City. We love youuuuuu!'. The band bows one final time before a transition is made for the postcard of the next nation.

The Grand Pentad

Postby Drawkland » Sat Jul 21, 2018 7:36 pm

Be Drawkian
The Grand Pentad

So we've gone over, at length, the significance and symbolism of the kits that the Kick Corps has used over the past cycles, and for future competition. Hell, the name of this mini-series is called "Be Drawkian." But what does it really mean to Be Drawkian? We're sure people from other nations don't exactly have an innate sense of this like citizens of Drawkland would, obviously.

In Drawkland, patriotism is an admired and common trait. Of course, not everybody is the same. Some people simply think "I guess this is a good nation to be living in," and others think with full-blown nationalism. For the most part though, everybody holds at least a little pride in the nation they live in. It's not uncommon to see flags flown outside many houses and businesses, and the traditional black and red is a color scheme that can be found everywhere, from trash cans on the street to the logos of thousands of companies founded in Drawkland itself.

If there's anything Drawkians love, it's symbols to rally behind. The Drawkland flag, sometimes called "The Grand Pentad," is one of the most sacred things in Drawkland, behind perhaps the drawk itself. The flag itself has one of the most unique designs in the multiverse, both in format and color. When you see it, you know. Drawkland is here. Let's look at just what this flag means.

Image

Nearly every color on any given nation's flag has powerful symbolism behind it. Ideals of freedom, purity, and resolve. Drawkland is no exception. Even with the rather unorthodox color scheme, there's still much meaning to it. Supposedly there's two interpretations of the colors, the more direct definition (one that is commonly associated with that color on other national flags), and the more mythical definition (one that is related to the mythos and history surrounding the formation of the nation). The mythological definition is more of a design concept than anything, and that'll be covered separately.

The Black is the dominant background color on the flag and the color most associated with Drawkland besides red. In most definitions, the black on the flag represents the nation as a whole, the land and the people that comprise it. It shows that behind everything that Drawkland prizes and accomplishes, there is and always will be the people of Drawkland behind it that truly make it happen. Without the people and the land that make Drawkland, there would be no real Drawkland. Just like how if you took away all the black parts of the flag, it would impossible for the "flag" to truly fly, there'd be nothing holding it together.

The Red is the secondary color of Drawkland. There's several different things the red means, but they're all equally valid in being a Drawkian. Really, the red stands for power, in many forms. It can take the form of strength, of bravery, overcoming struggles, or just red-blooded patriotism. The blue and gold represent more of what Drawkland achieves and prides itself on, and the red and black is what builds that success. You can visualize it on the flag, even - the black backdrop holds the red bands, which come together to hold up the blue-and-gold pentagon symbol in the center. The nation is just like that - the bravery and strength of the people and the land come together to create something greater.

The Blue is what comprises the pentagon in the center, breaking from the red/blue color scheme to accentuate itself. The blue represents valor and loyalty. If a nation does not have loyalty and pride among its citizens, then how great of a country can it really be? The pentagon itself is a reference to the 5 major territories and Drawkionels that make up the nation. While 7 may be the lucky number for Drawkians, 5 is the sacred one that the nation has held dear since its inception.

The Gold star in the center is the last component of the flag. Like in many other flags, the gold hue generally refers to the wealth and success of the nation. However, the Drawkian Star is also said to reference the longevity and eternal glory of the nation. Many nation flags have stars on them, some a great many, others only a few. However, Drawkland's lone star is a reference to the unity of the people. No matter where a Drawkian comes from, no matter what they do, they're still part of one unit. When you do what's right, you become part of the glory that has remained true for generations and will continue to reign for many more. This is what The Grand Pentad truly is.

Besides the color and the general Grand Pentad concept, there's also the more mythological meaning behind the flag. This dates back to when the nation was brought together and unified back thousands of years ago. Back when even Iarocav had not yet been born, the landmass that would one day be Drawkland was not the near-utopia it was now. In reality, it was a dark place, with people in settlements few and far between, and evil beings skulking about. This is what the black background represents here.

However, it wouldn't be that way forever. At some point, five leaders from five different areas of the continent rose to power in their own right. They broke out from the darkness and turned their lands into strongholds. Soon enough, they all found each other (thanks the most to Iarocav's exploration), and soon enough, they decided that 4 other powers at large was too many, and they turned against one another for supremacy. They built up their strength and spilled blood along the way, owing to the red color. The bands themselves roughly correspond to the geographical area of the continent where these leaders came to be.

After years of bloodshed, they came to realize that nobody could truly gain the upper hand. While none of these kingdoms were too alike, they all had their own strengths and weaknesses that played against each other. Nobody had the upper hand. Thus, they came together. The common mythos dictates that these 5 leaders met at a neutral location, the volcano called Valsum in the center of the continent. There they debated and lectured and argued at length, lasting many months. There, they decided upon peace and unity with each other, hence the blue. Supposedly they met in a secret chamber within the volcano, a sacred five-sided building that had inexplicably been there before any recorded time. This hasn't been historically confirmed, most historical account have them meeting at the summit within tents, but the rumor and mystical interpretation claims the chamber is real, and this is why the center of the flag is a pentagon. Historians, of course, just say this was a coincidental design choice.

After several decades of ruling the nation well, the leaders (now called Drawkionels) went on a quest, a long journey to obtain immortality. They just barely succeeded, and came back to the nation triumphantly. They've ruled the nation ever since, lasting thousands of years. The star, therefore, means eternity and glory. The single star refers to the fact that the same unit has governed the nation since the very beginning in solidarity.

Both of these meanings to the flag are equally valid. Many Drawkians are taught these concepts in school (generally at a middle school level where they're more easily able to comprehend the significance behind the historical and symbolism the flag represents). Many take these to heart, and live by this for their whole lives. It gives you a purpose, a drive. And that's what it's like to Be Drawkian.

Independents Cup Quarter Final Review
Mercedini vs Abanhfleft
@ Freedom Cola Stadium - Borotia, Free Republics

Good evening and welcome back to Borotia for the quarter finals of the Independents Cup. Mercedinian sports fans might be familiar with the FreedomCola Stadium, as it was the home of the Mercedinian U18 National Team when they reached the quarter final stage of the Sporting World Cup which was held in the Free Republics a couple of months ago. As for this tournament, we're down to the nitty gritty with eight premier teams still in the hunt for that IAC trophy. We only have one previous winner still in the hunt for a second title, with both the current host and defending champion Free Republics going strong at the bottom half of the draw. Today, the national team face Abanhfleft who have been making regular appearances against Mercedini at all levels recently, with a mixed set of results for both teams. Let's see who ends up on top in this part of the saga, as we join the action in the stadium.

Independents Cup: Fruitful Final Four

FINAL SCORE
IAC | QF

MERCEDINI 3
Alotic 27', Kraljic 32', Dosic 45'
ABANHFLEFT 2
Jensdottir-Jennings 57', Rusev 63'

Borotia, Free Republics
The Golden Eagles have made it to their third consecutive semi-final as they overcome one of the pre-tournament favourites in Abanhfleft, following a terrific first half performance contributing to a 3-2 victory in Borotia. The win will now mean that Mercedini have been set up with a date with defending champions Free Republics in a repeat of the semi-finals at the 4th edition of the Independents Cup where the Republicans stole it at the death from a more than controversial handball goal which is still spoken about when the host's name arises in conversation. Fans of the Golden Eagles will hope lightning wont strike twice as they enter as equals in the semi final bout. Drawkland and North Prarie wait for them in the other semi-final, with heavy tournament favourites Drawkland expected to breeze through to the final and ultimately lift their first IAC championship.

North Prarie v. Drawkland @ Soccer Palace, Petrograd, Plymouth, Free Republics
Mercedini v. Free Republics @ Gem of the Oceans Stadium, Republica, Republica District, Free Republics

The proverbial game of two halves was certainly representative of the match in Borotia with a stellar Mercedinian first half followed up by a more than worrying Fleftic fightback, but Mercedini ultimately held on for the victory to seal their name into the semi-final draw. All of the big names turned up for the match at the FreedomCola Stadium, something which hasnt been the case in some recent major tournament played by the team, resulting in them being knocked out or having to play for third place at these tournaments. One member of each outfield position got on the scoresheet with Alotic from the strikers, Kraljic from midfielders and Dosic from the defence all netted, something which wouldve pleased Lyndainium, knowing the team is capable of scoring goals from any team member on the pitch. It gives the Golden Eagles plenty of momentum going into the final two matches they will play at the tournament.

Tens of thousands of fans are expected in the Gem of the Oceans Stadium in Republica for the semi-final, with many hoping they can undo the wrongs of their previous semi-final outing against the Free Republics and make it to their second IAC final in three editions. The final four can all taste the trophy at this point with all teams confirmed to play two more matches at this tournament before it's conlcusion, with fans from all four nations waiting anxiously to see which placememnt match their team will play in.

The Drawk

Postby Drawkland » Mon Jul 23, 2018 7:43 pm

Be Drawkian
The Drawk

This is perhaps some of the most important yet most misunderstood information about Drawkland. Sure, you may know about Drawkland, but what is Drawkland the land ... of? Some may think that calling somebody a Drawkian or a Drawk is virtually synonymous, but this is simply not the case. To know what it means to be a Drawkian, you should know where the name itself comes from.

So what exactly is a Drawk?

Image

The Drawk is a creature which developed relatively late in biological history. Earliest biological records and historical accounts peg the first drawks to have popped up around 100-200 years before Iarocav and the other Drawkionels formed. It would be a little inaccurate to say that drawks evolved to what they were. DNA samples taken from mainline drawk species suggests that the drawk is not actually an animal in its own right, actually being a hybrid between the drake dragons and giant hawks of the Ellzidanian jungles and forests, hence the portmanteau name of "Drawk."

Nobody can really be sure how and why multiple drakes and hawks of that area of wilderness decided to copulate and raise these hybrid offspring, but popular accounts claim that the superiority of the Drawk species over many others in its biome led to its success and continuation of their lineage for many more generations. It wasn't long before drawks weren't created by the combination of drakes and hawks, but by the drawks reproducing themselves and staying together in flocks/packs until their influence became more widespread.

In appearance, drawks appear closest to the griffin that is popular in many mythologies throughout the multiverse. However, there are a few key differences (which vary by subspecies). In its most basic forms, the drawk is quadrupedal with two wings on its back, counting for 6 limbs in total. The head closely resembles that of a hawk, but due to the dragon lineage, also contains two primary horns that extend from the back of the skull. Most subspecies contain additional smaller horns or large ruffled feathers in that area as well. The body is lean but muscular. The top half of the torso is thickly feathered, while the underbelly and foreleg areas are more scaly. The wings are large and feathered, taking more from the hawk side of its lineage. Finally, the tail varies from species to species, but most have both a fan-like feathered hawk tail in addition to a relatively short, scaly, spiked spine tail like a dragon.

Perhaps the drawk's greatest gift is its adaptability. The genetic tendencies of the drawk tend to be very quick and volatile, with evolution in some species occurring in comparatively few generations. Drawk communities which move to a new environment are generally quick to pick up traits that are beneficial to said environment. That said, soon after drawks began to become numerous in their area of the wilderness, there began to be subspecies of the drawk in concentrated communities, which eventually spread out in their own right.

Image

By now there are many different varieties of the drawk, many which serve different purposes in their various environments and some of which have even been bred by people for specific purposes. Drawks now are really the adaptable all-purpose creature, and also the national icon of Drawkland. Despite there being many variants, the vast majority are of these few certain types listed below.

Grand Drawk: Likely the first species to originally exist. The Grand Drawk is the archetypal drawk - powerful, fleet, intelligent, and able to adapt to situations quickly. While this isn't the largest species of drawk to exist, it's certainly on the larger side of all drawk species. The national animal of Drawkland is technically a Grand Drawk - it's not necessarily the rarest or at risk, but the species is considered protected, as it is illegal to kill or trap them, and only Grand Drawks bred in captivity are allowed to be owned or kept in captivity. Seeing a Grand Drawk is considered good luck.

Lesser Drawk: The Lesser Drawks likely developed early on in history. Biologists believe that the Lesser Drawk - smaller, lighter, and weaker than the Grand Drawk variant - developed when several colonies of Grand Drawks moved to an area with little food and were isolated due to natural events. The larger drawks died out due to lack of food, while the smaller ones survived since they required less sustenance to live. This variant continued to thrive, simply picking on smaller prey and becoming partially omnivorous. Due to its less demanding dietary requirements, the Lesser Drawks quickly spread out, and becoming more community-oriented than territorial. This led to the Lesser Drawk becoming the most numerous variant, living in areas all over Drawkland.

Stock Drawk: Sooner or later, somebody had to ask the question. "Wait a minute, what does drawk taste like? It is any good?" The answer turned out to be yes, it being a very savory and delicious meat that many desired. However, it was in rare supply, and things were compounded by some species being illegal to hunt. Eventually, a group of husbandry experts bred a new species of drawk - one they dubbed "Stock Drawk" - which would be specifically for raising and slaughtering for food. The Stock Drawk is shorter, stouter, and more docile than wild drawks, and of course is fed to be more meaty for consumer use. Still though, Drawk meat is considered a delicacy, and is generally too expensive to have on a regular basis.

Dwarf Drawk: Very early in Drawkian history, many people desired to hold drawks as pets, considering their status as national icons and generally beautiful animals. Wild drawks are much too aggressive and hard to tame, however, so an adventurous group of Drawkians decided to try and breed drawks to be better kept as pets. They eventually succeeded, breeding a variant that was relatively smaller (ranging in size from large cats to large dogs), docile, and with naturally duller and softer beaks/claws. While obviously a pet drawk is wildly expensive, Dwarf Drawks can sometimes be seen walking or doing short flights with their owners in parks and public areas.

Land Drawk: The Land Drawk, despite its name, is not technically flightless. While its wings are partially vestigial, there's a reason the Land Drawk is called the Land drawk. Taking more after their natural drake instincts, the Land Drawk prefers to spend its time hunting prey on the ground. This variant is much stronger and bulkier (one of the largest variants) than most, and is built for power on the ground. The wings are still useful, as they are used both as intimidation factors on smaller animals and potential threats to their territory/mates. Many Land Drawks use their wings for speed boosts while running, or for short, powerful bursts that help them leap far forward very quickly (generally to make a final or initial hit on prey).

Sea Drawk: The Sea Drawk, as you may assume, are drawks that have adapted to sea life. They don't live underwater, rather they live in small coastal packs that mainly hunt fish in the sea. Sea Drawks are smaller and more streamlined. They have no feathered tail like many drawks do, instead opting for a longer dragon-like tail which is used for stability and navigation underwater. Their feathers and wings are still existent, sleek and with a slight film that allows them to navigate the currents and move with deadly efficiency. They have a slight film over their eyes as well which allow them to see underwater more clearly.

Sky Drawk: You can probably see the pattern here. The Sky Drawk, like its counterparts, found a new environment to live in. The most birdlike of all the variants, the Sky Drawk generally lives in mountainous areas. The body of the Sky Drawk is the leanest and lightest of all, and the wings are the largest. This species has adapted to life in the air, and is essentially a giant hawk but with 4 thicker legs rather than 2 in addition to the wings. This variant is also most likely to be independent than others, preferring lone nests and perches rather than large community ones.

Elemental Drawks: The rarest and most unique of all, Elemental Drawks are a novelty more than anything. Pioneered by the mages and wizards of Drawkland back in the day, Elemental Drawks are generally Grand Drawks (but not exclusively so) which have been bred/enchanted by a mage to be bound to a certain element, such as fire or water. While these are mainly bred as pets or minions to these magically skilled individuals, ones shown in the wild have been seen employing their magic-based traits (fire breath, air bursts, rock throws) with relative efficiency while hunting or attempting to impress mates. Occasionally, an Elemental Drawk can be found in the wild, which is a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence.

There are many many other species of drawks roaming around Drawkland's wilderness and all of Sonnel, but these are the ones which are most popularly known by the general public. But, with all this talk about drawks, you may be wondering why exactly the nation was named after them, and why they are such an integral part of the national mythos and culture.

Image

Back when the nation was first being formed by Iarocav and the other Drawkionels, it wasn't called Drawkland. Originally, when the five territories united together, the "nation" didn't really have a name, if you could even call it a nation. It was more of a loose alliance of the various territories, known as the Valsum Union or just Valsumet (owing to the volcano in the center of the continent where negotiations took place). They had decided that 25 years after the alliance began, they would reevaluate relations and determine how they would like to proceed.

In this time, Iarocav continued his exploration of the wilderness to more completely map the continent. In his travels, he encountered the mighty drawk and found a few of its variants. Enamored with the beautiful and powerful animal, he studied its traits and how it acted. He loved the behavior of the animal, its sense of community, yet sense of individuality and nobility. He even managed to capture one itself and bring it back to his home lands with him to further analyze them. The more he studied it, the more he loved it. He wrote in a journal he made while studying the drawk, "If only my people could emulate the nobility and power of this creature ... we could all be a greater nation."

Because of this, on the 25th anniversary of the union when the leaders met again, Iarocav brought forward the idea that, if the territories decided to unite into one nation, that it be named "Drawkland" after the animal, as it could be a symbol that the populous could rally behind. Along with the other ideals that Iarocav had created and laid out, it was a perfect setup. And thus, as the nation continued to grow and develop, people learned and knew what it was they needed to do. If you want to Be Drawkian, you just have to be a Drawk.

Independents' Cup Semi-final LIVE
Mercedini vs. Free Republics
@ Gem of the Oceans Stadium - Republica, Free Republics

Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the Gem of the Oceans Stadium located in Republica, Free Republics. We have another match for you in the saga which is Mercedini's journey at the Independents Cup. The Golden Eagles have made it all the way to the semifinals after they wrapped up the group with a clean sweep before booking their spot in the final four with a 3-2 victory against Abanhfleft. Today, Mercedini face argubly their toughest opponents thus far in the completion in the Free Republics, with recent memory reminding us of the calamitous own goal which knocked out the Golden Eagles and sent the Free Republics through to a final they would eventully ein. Mercedini have had a seamless run in the tournament so far so let's see if they can keep that up. Two teams with big fan bases at this tournament who could definitely go on and win it all, both teams have made it this far, it will be interesting to see how the match develops between these two teams.

0' - Here we go! The teams head out of the tunnel to greet the crowds in the stadium, the attendance looks to be a lot bigger than the tens of thousands seen in previous matches due to the obvious higher capacity in the Gem of the Oceans Stadium plus the local draw of the hosts playing in Republics. The big match is certainly capturing the imagination of the locals here, meaning there's plenty of action happening in the stands. Mercedini are back to their full strength squad after resting some players in their match against Abanhfleft, with Chollotov and Dostalok the ones to watch for the Golden Eagles, while Presic and Karlovic have put in tremendous individual performances in previous matches, with all eyes on the team in blue and black as they attempt to make it back to where they want to be and have only been once before, the IAC championship final! Plenty of talent on the pitch for both sides, it's just the matter of who will be left standing once the dust has settled between these two IAC juggernauts.

5' - (MRC 0-0 FFR) - It's a tale of two sets of tactics in this game thus far, with the Mercedinians attacking very strongly in the opening five minutes of the game, compared with the defensive stance of the Free Republics who are playing in their recognisable blue starred kits, contrasting the black with navy patterned kits of the Mercedinians. Chillotov and Dostalok haven't seem much of the ball lately, with the opposition defence doing well to isolate them up the pitch, Presic and Garzallo are making headway down the wings, they just lack that dangerous ball in which could prove to be the difference in the end. It remains goalless at this early stage, chances have been few and far between as these teams feel each other out, the fans certainly seem up for it though.

12' - (MRC 0-0 FFR) - Wow! The Mercedinians are certainly not having it their own way in this match as the Republicans have the ball in the net for the first big chance of the game. It has been ruled for offside and a potential foul in the build-up, so the Golden Eagles have been let off very early on in this match, the crowd were initially on their feet but are now actively booing the linesman and the referee. Eldarkhanov stole the ball from behind Karlovic in the midfield, with the defence also pushing up the field to instigate an attack, which left the team exposed for a counter attack down the centre. Eldarkhanov was held up at the start of the final third as a number of players from both teams jostled for the ball, but they got the ball through to Peltola who was put through in acres of space. All of the defenders stopped and appealed for offside, but that didn't stop the FFR striker from rounding the keeper and slotting the ball into the net, showcasing the 'play to the whistle' mantra to all those who want to up their game. The Golden Eagles got away with one there, tight margins already presenting themselves in the match with Mercedini now able to regroup and reset themselves for the restart.

18' - (MRC 1-0 FFR) - Image GOAL! Mercedini open the scoring at the Gem with a sweet Dostalok strike on the edge of the box. It gives the Mercedinians something to cheer about at the start of this game as they hope to dispel the demons of the previous edition. They take the lead following a long spell of possession which didn't really come to much, Dostalok received the ball, shimmied to his right before firing low to the keeper's left and into the net. The locals have decreased in their loudness but it's still very early days so far in the game, plenty of time in the game but as of now, Mercedini hold a one-nil lead in the match with less than twenty minutes on the clock.

25' - (MRC 1-0 FFR) - Twenty five minutes gone and chances have been in short supply since that ruled out goal less than ten minutes ago. Chillotov and Dostalok have been forced to fall back and join the midfield battle to get a touch on the ball, disrupting their attacking play which has led them to this point. FFR has also been lacking upfront since their big chance earlier, the defenders seem to be doing a decent job so far in locking the opposition out of the box. Fans who were making all the noise have now gone silent as the nerves begin to set in, it's a big match for both teams, with one eye also on the match between Drawkland and North Prarie, with the winners of the two matches playing each other in the final, while the losers will have to settle for the third place playoff. Nothing to really separate these two teams at the moment, still goalless in this very tight semi-final bout.

32' - (MRC 1-0 FFR) - Mercedini get another shot on target with an opportunistic shot from Chillotov on the edge of the box. In a match of few chances, that could have been the difference between doubling their lead or leaving the door open for the opposition. Chillotov was found with a cross from Presic which was headed out of the box by the Republican defence. The 1860 Azoth striker took a touch to control it before firing high towards the FFR goal, but the shot lacked any venom and was safely caught by Sergeyev in the net. We're over half way through the first half, with only two chances worth of note in this match aside from the goal. It certainly hasn't been a classic in terms of exciting matches, but both teams still have a stake in this match, although some of the locals may feel short-changed by the action in this match. Still 1-0.

37' - (MRC 1-0 FFR) - Less than ten minutes to go in this match, and both teams need to produce some magic if they are to make sure of a good performance in this first half. Both teams have had recent chances on goal, but neither have been taken, meaning Mercedini remain with the advantage as time continues to tick away. The first came from Mercedini where a corner was sent in and was originally cleared, before Dostalok picked up the ball outside the box. A rush of blood to the head of the Handon United striker meant he hit the shot on the volley and sent the ball high and wide into the stands behind the goal, and receiving jeers from the home fans for his troubles. At the other end, the Free Republics went close with a good piece of passing play before Lydsson's low drive whistled just wide of the past. It coming to a head in this match, but time is running out for the Free Republics to level things up in the first half.

45+1' - (MRC 2-0 FFR) - Image Mercedini double their lead in a surprising turn of events at the Gem of the Oceans Stadium in Republica. First, the Free Republics thought they had rammed home an equaliser after a goal mouth scramble, it was Lydsson again whose lashed shot was blocked on the line by Catessic. The Republican players appealed for the goal to be given, but the referee clearly indicated that his watch showed no goal, so play was continuing while that was happening. It allowed Karlovic to streak clear and thread through Chillotov while the Republican players were still trying to get back. Sergeyev came out to close the angle but that just opened up the opportunity for the Azoth striker to square it to Dostalok who slid the ball into the empty net. 2-0 Mercedini, it's all turned around following that goal.

45+4' - (MRC 0-0 UAR) - How intriguing! The referee blows his whistle for the end of the first half in what has been an eye opening first half to the match. Chances have been few and far between in this half, but that didn't stop Mercedini from eventually running up the score in front of the home fans. The Mercedinians haven't had it their own way but they still go in at half-time with the lead in hand. These two teams are finely poised, at half time at the Gem of the Oceans Stadium, it's Mercedini 2, Free Republics 0.

HALF TIME
Mercedini 2 - 0 Free Republics

Dostalok 18', 45+1'

Welcome back to the Gem, where we are embroiled in a fascinating match between Mercedini and the Free Republics for a spot in the final of the 5th Independents Cup hosted by the Free Republics themselves. The Golden Eagles in black and blue are currently embroiled in a very fascinating match with the Free Republics It's tightly poised between the two teams, so let's see who will be left standing in this finally balanced match.

51' - (MRC 3-0 FFR) - Image Oooo, well... that could be the killer blow which sees Mercedini through to their second IAC final in five editions. Dostalok completes his hattrick just after the fifth minute mark with a simple flick on at the near post. Presic was found with a reverse pass and held up the ball well to allow his fellow teammates to get forward for a chance. Presic worked round his marker before sending in an in-swinging cross destined for the far post. It was somewhat under hit by the Somer City player, but Dostalok made it work by adding the faintest flick on to deceive the goalkeeper and squeeze it inside the near post. The team celebrate in the corner, with Mercedinians celebrating all round the stadium. 3-0, what a surprise!

59' - (MRC 3-0 FFR) - Mercedini have settled really well into the second half following that third goal. The roles seem to have been flipped in this match as it's now FFR's turn to attack and Mercedini's turn to sit and hold their opponents back to hang onto their three-goal lead. Both managers are on the edge of their technical areas barking orders and tactics at their players on the field with the fans chanting their chants and banging their drums to drum up (pardon the pun) a spectacular atmosphere at the Gem of the Oceans here in Republica. Mercedinians will be staying for a small while longer at this rate, with this being the first match held in the Republican city, meaning the fans will have to to stay and soak up the culture and the FFR sun for a couple more days still. It remains 3-0, with every second benefitting the team in blue and black as the try to keep out the hosts.

65' - (MRC 3-1 FFR) - Image Things just got interesting in this semi-final as the Free Republics get themselves on the board with over half an hour still to play. It's Porbergur Lydsson who has been at the forefront of the Republican chances in this game who has converted from close range to reduce the deficit. The team still need two more goals to take it to extra time, or three if they want to win the game outright. Some flags are flying and it did raise the atmosphere in the stadium to a degree, but Mercedini remain n control of this match. Is this a way back for the hosts?

71' - (MRC 3-2 FFR) - Image GOAL! Suddenly this stadium believes! It's been a calamitous ten minutes or so for Mercedini who have given up all the groupnd they have amassed over the previous hour of play. Now, it's the Free Republics who have all the momentum and only need one more goal in the next twenty minutes for extra time. This goal came from Love Holm who fired in from a corner, igniting the home fans in the stadium, cheers ring out around the stadium as the hosts now close to within one of Mercedini. It's gonna be a sticky final twenty minutes for those in black and blue. Unimaginably, it's 3-2! Image Chillotov OFF, Billic ON; Toivonen OFF, Ossun ON

79' - (MRC 3-2 FFR) - Mercedini seem to have quelled the seemingly free flow of goals coming from the Free Republics as of late, with Billic falling back and accompanying the midfielders as they try to stamp out any opportunity of a chance at the get-go. It's been a rough period for the national team which has put a black smudge on what would have been an impressive performance from the team. A third goal would likely give the hosts all of the match capital after being three goals up earlier in the game. Drawkland looks to be cruising to a victory in their match against North Prarie so at least one of the spots in the finals look settled. Fifteen minutes to go, still 3-2.

86' - (MRC 4-2 FFR) - Image Billic finally gets the goal he deserves which finally wraps up what has been an unnecessarily stressful game for the players, coaches and fans. It looks like they have finally exorcised the demons of that rather dreadful handball goal in the last edition, and they will finally play in another final for a chance at an IAC title, which many fans believe is long overdue given the number of competitive nations at the tournament. Time is ticking down on the host's cup run. It looks like it's gonna be Mercedini and Drawkland in the final.

90+1' - (MRC 4-2 FFR) - There we have it, the referee blows his whistle for the end of what was a tight and entertaining affair in Republica. Mercedini were made to work for their win and the result may seem harsh from an FFR point of view, as the defending champions bow out a the semi-final stage, but it is a testament to the quality and talent of both squads here today. A hattrick from Dostalok with another goal from substitute Billic ultimately sealed Mercedini a place in their final, while the Republicans will watch their own IAC final from the comfort of their own home. It's been a good performance from their team, but it's finishied at the Gem of the Oceans Stadium; Mercedini 4, Free Republics 2.

FULL TIME
Mercedini 4 - 2 Free Republics

Dostalok 18', 45+1', 51', Billic 86'Lydsson 65', Holm 71'

That's it from us, Mercedini are through to their second Independents Cup Final where they will meet pre-tournament favourites and zero-time winners of anything important, Drawkland. It will likely be a different environment for the lads as they look to overcome the odds and bring home the IAC title, to place next to their Cup of Harmony. As ever, we will give you the run down of all the action including post match interviews and reactions. However, from us here in Republica, goodnight!

The Desire To Win

Postby Drawkland » Wed Jul 25, 2018 3:56 pm

Be Drawkian
The Desire To Win

What does it all mean?

You may've read through these little mini-essays. You probably think, "Well those are some cool kits. Nice flag. Neat bird ... thing." But do you really know what they mean? What they truly signify? And what the hell does it have to do with soccer? If you've read through these over the course of this cup, ask yourself. What does it mean to Be Drawkian?

Being Drawkian is being adaptable. Being Drawkian is being powerful. Being Drawkian is being the best. Being Drawkian is working together to accomplish the ultimate goal. Being Drawkian is winning.

You see, it had everything to do with soccer.

In the last Independents Cup, the Kick Corps lost sight of their heritage. They weren't thinking about their ideals, or their mental framework. They were simply surviving. After 3 cycles of complete mediocrity in the IAC, it's no wonder that they freaked out at their first sight of possible success. Their confidence was nil, and the only ounce of confidence they had only came once the big scary Schottia had been vanquished for them. They weren't being Drawkian, they were trying to pretend they weren't cowardly. A really confident, a really Drawkian team, would've won the day in the IAC 4 final. But they weren't, and they didn't. They've surely learned their lesson.

Independents Cup 5 is different, a new beginning. Admittedly there's the distinction of Drawkland now being the top nation in the IAC this cycle, but that doesn't change one thing about the nations the Kick Corps has faced this edition. It's the same old kind of nations, same old Corps squad, same old song and dance. This time though, there's no losing. Drawkland has lost at least two games every single IAC in its history. This time, it's different.

Nearly every Kick Corps member is in agreement. When asked about the IAC 4 final, they all say the same. They didn't play as a team. They didn't play to their potential. They were idling on the field, hoping something would happen, without actually doing anything to make it happen. This is where it's different. There is no longer any idling on the field hoping somebody will pick up the slack. The Corps is averaging 3 goals per game, having scored 4 in 4 games. The offense is alive. The defense is refusing to spring deadly leaks. The team is a unit and the unit is dominating.

The Kick Corps has come anew. Gone are the days of insecurity and praying that nothing goes wrong. They will run full-power, pedal to the medal, and if something goes wrong, then you're just out of luck. Nothing will be left to chance. They will finish what they started 2 years ago in Schottia.

They are powerful. They are cohesive. They aren't taking prisoners. And they're not going to take no for an answer.

They Will Be Drawkian.
