Test Cricket — Season Nine

Scheduling thread
NSSport Cricket Discussion Thread

This thread is for all squad lists and RPs for the GCF's ninth season of Test cricket. Results will also be posted in this thread.
Please only post in here if you have had a Test confirmed on the schedule, or are an approved scorinator. Do not schedule any series in here; there is a separate thread for that.
Cricket, can be something of an, ahem, impenetrable sport to get into and understand, so here are a few links for those who might be slightly unsure of what the hell is happening here to look over:
-- Wikipedia page on Test Cricket
-- Explanation of how Test cricket works
-- A Beginners Guide to Cricket (Relatively Lengthy but Very Good!)
-- An image describing common positions players can field at on a cricket field.
-- Types of bowling in cricket.

All games will be scorinated by Liventia (with some exceptions where Apox may step in when I am unavailable). The scorinator is the publicly-available RedBaller 2.0, which includes an option to define pitch/ground modifiers. This allows the host nation of each series to determine the type of pitch the players will play on.

Before each home series, can the hosting nation please confirm ground modifiers (from –6 for a pitch that suits bowlers to +6 for a batting paradise) for each of the Test matches they will host for the series. Not doing so will indicate acceptance of the ground modifiers being 0.

The poster behind this is almost certainly Liventia or Apox, the current de facto GCF co-presidents.

The GCF Season

1. Each GCF season runs for a period decided by the season host. The schedule must afford each nation the opportunity to schedule at least ten Test matches, one per scorination period. (There is no minimum number of Tests.)
2. Tests should not be scheduled for scorination on consecutive days, reflecting the measured pace of Test cricket.
3. Each nation may have at most one Test scheduled per scorination period. Determination of home ground is up to the nations who agree to play.
4. Nations are strongly encouraged to schedule series of two or more consecutive Tests with the same host nation instead of one-offs. Nations are strongly discouraged from playing home-and-away series or two or more one-offs in the same season with the same opponent.

The GCF Rankings

5. Definitions
  • One-off Test: Any Test not part of a series. One-off results are added to ratings of Full Members and Associate Members immediately; for Candidates the results are held until qualification for Associate Member status and then added in.
  • Series: Two, three or more consecutive Tests between the same parties and played in the same host nation. Results for both the series and all constituent Tests are added into ratings only after the series is complete.
  • Match: All Tests and all series are considered matches. A one-off Test is one match. A two-Test series is three matches; a three-Test series, four matches.
  • Full Member (FM): A nation calendared in the current Test season that has accumulated 10 or more matches, counting this season and the most recent completed season, and is not an Affiliate Member.
  • Associate Member (AS): A nation calendared in the current Test season that has completed at least one series but does not yet meet the standard for Full Member, and is not an Affiliate Member.
  • Affiliate Member (AF): A nation calendared in the current Test season that has completed at least one series, but has not been allowed to schedule more than five Tests due to roleplaying restrictions.
Affiliate Members can be promoted to Associate Members; once Associate Membership is obtained, the nation will retain Associate or Full Membership permanently while active. Returning Associate or Full Members will start at Candidate level, but bypass Affiliate status once the appropriate criteria are met.
  • Candidate (CA): A nation calendared in the current Test season that has yet to complete a series.
  • Competitors in the most recent complete season that have not calendared in the current Test season are coded IN for Inactive, or CE if their federation has Ceased to Exist. Records are maintained for a possible return to activity.
6. A Candidate has a rating of 100 for all purposes.
7. When rating one nation in a series, if their opponent is rated more than 40 points higher/lower at the start of the series then treat that calculated rating as exactly 40 points higher/lower instead for purposes of this formula.
8. The rating points earned by one nation in a series (or a one-off) equal the opponent's calculated rating times the number of matches, plus 50 times the number of matches won, minus 50 times the number of matches lost.
Example: Four-Test series, A (rated 125) in B (rated 75). A wins Tests 1 and 4, B wins Test 2, and Test 3 is drawn.

A treats B as if rated 85, and gets (85*5)+(50*3)-(50*1) = 425+150-50 = 525 rating points.
B treats A as if rated 115, and gets (115*5)+(50*1)-(50*3) = 575+50-150 = 475 rating points.

9. A four-step procedure is used to update ratings.
  • a. Add the rating points for each nation to their previous total.
  • b. Add the number of matches played to that previous total.
  • c. Divide the new rating points total by the updated number of matches to get an updated calculated rating.
  • d. Average the calculated rating with the required constant, producing an adjusted rating correct to two decimal places for Full Members and rounded towards 100 for Associate and Affiliate Members.
10. An Associate or Affiliate Member whose calculated rating is above 100 averages the calculated rating with 90, rounding towards 100; an Associate or Affiliate Member whose calculated rating is below 100 averages the calculated rating with 110, rounding towards 100.
11. All Full Members average their calculated rating with 100, for their adjusted rating.
12. Ratings are based on data from the current season and at the immediately preceding complete season. At the end of each season all older results are purged and ratings recalculated accordingly. That is, the rankings for GCF 9 consist of team performances from GCF 8 and GCF 9, with GCF 7 results removed.

The League standings
13. League points will be awarded as follows: 16 points for a win, 9 for a tie, 5 for a draw, an additional 4 points for a first-innings lead or 2 points for a first-innings tie, 1 bonus point for a win by 10 wickets or an innings.
14. To account for the different number of matches each team may play, the final total – not including bonus points – will be averaged by the number of matches played. This does not include series (unlike when tabulating the rankings, which do count series as matches). Bonus points are to be added after the average. Teams tied on points shall not be separated unless it affects qualification for the Test World Championship, in which case the team with the higher world ranking (adjusted points) shall advance.
15. At the end of 12 matches, the top two teams in the league, and the top two teams in the world rankings (or the next two teams in the league if they are the same teams) shall qualify for the Test World Championship (TWC). Teams must play a minimum of five matches to qualify for the TWC.
16. The TWC shall consist of two three-match semifinal series, held in the country of the teams with more average league points, over six days during Matchday 13. In case of a drawn series, the team with more average league points shall advance. Should the series be decided after two games, the third game will still be played for world ranking purposes.
17. The TWC shall consist of a three-match final series, held in the country of the finalist with more average league points, over six days during Matchday 14. In case of a drawn series, the team with more average league points shall be declared World Champions. Should the series be decided after two games, the third game will still be played for world ranking purposes.

The poster behind this is almost certainly Liventia or Apox, the current de facto GCF co-presidents.

PLOUGH ISLANDS OFFICIALLY A TEST TEAM
by Elizabeth Davy, Current Affairs Correspondent, in Sutton

Following weeks of informed speculation, Cde Premier Dale Piper has confirmed officially that the Plough Islands will be playing Test cricket this year. Speaking in his capacity as President of the Plough Islands Cricket Association - which will now officially seek membership of the Global Cricket Federation - and seated with the Association's Chair Felicity Smith and national team captain Kevin Laing, Cde Piper paid tribute to the players, coaches, administrators, and the Plough Islander cricketing community that had enabled the Association to reach this stage.
"We are exceedingly grateful to the Global Cricket Federation and its leadership in Liventia for granting us this recognition and opportunity", Cde Piper stated. The Premier also stated that two tours of the Plough Islands by other Test nations had been confirmed, and both would take place in June, against the seventh-ranked Lisander and the top ranked team in the world in Liventia. Smith confirmed that the first Test against the Lisandrans would take place at December Park on the 17th of June, and that construction would begin on temporary spectator accommodation at the Trotsky Avenue end of the stadium to ensure "as much of the population as possible can see the game live", while a projection screen would be set up outside the stadium in the park proper.
The news was gratefully received by fans of the sport; Plough Radio commentator and former national team fast bowler Andrew Kulayev came close to breaking down when speaking on air to a caller who said they felt "hopelessly emotional", and that "our small country is being validated by the world". The Minister for Culture and Society, Cde James Cloud, said he was "personally ecstatic", but voiced concern about the level of performance the national team would now have to achieve, warning "we will not know how good we really are until the first match begins".

on the 11th May 2018, the Plough Islands Gazette wrote:
ANALYSIS: TEST SQUAD GIVES ISLANDS BEST CHANCE
by Ian Goswell, Chief Cricket Correspondent for Plough Radio, in Sutton

Test cricket is an uncharted ocean for the Plough Islands Cricket Association and head coach Richard Peake. Four-day games against Cisderie, while passionate, have it is fair to say never quite captured the same imagination as the so-called pinnacle of the game, and thanks to the efforts of the Association and Cde Premier Dale Piper, that pinnacle is within reach.
On the face of it, the squad selected is a highly satisfactory one, playing to the best of the Plough Islands' strengths. A relatively youthful team will benefit greatly from exposure to Test cricket, and captain Kevin Laing will have few problems keeping the group harmonious with his interpersonal skills. Quite rightly, collectively the team is without ego and combines for far more than the sum of any individual parts.
The bowling, arguably as ever, is where the islands are strongest; McCarthy and Baxter provide potent contrast (though there is no room for David Heath's medium pace) against a wealth of spin options, with lots of scope for varying the attack in familiar conditions. Richard Peake has made his preference for all-rounders clear previously, and several players (Davy, Whittall, Leggett, and even the captain) will likely be pulling double duty, but it is hard not to see left-arm specialist Naomi Salisbury leading the way on home soil.
There are, though, potential weaknesses to be found in the batting; while there is a surfeit of choices to open, the middle order is less plentiful, with few specialist middle-order players - Jonathan Shiner a surprising omission despite an excellent start to his Harrison Cup Season for New Dalmatia - and a few people likely to be playing out of their natural position. The safe choice for a starting XI would be to pick Holt and Davy, with Whittall at his natural four and the impactful Leggett late on at six, but some experimentation may be needed to find the Foxes' most natural order. Wicketkeeping is also a minor concern; with Swift's Tim Bleasdale waiting on naturalisation, and Bradford's Leanne Martin recovering from illness, 36-year-old Paul Donaghy is the only obvious choice to back up Ilya Lebed.
Despite these though, it is hard to argue that Peake and Chair Felicity Smith have done anything but pick the best group of players available to them. With the obvious caveat that there is no benchmark to measure the team against - and Lisander and Liventia will provide the sternest possible tests of this optimism - it seems, certainly to this writer, that there is much to be excited about for this first summer of Test cricket. It merely remains for the players to take their place in history and give the best possible account of themselves and their country, and it is impossible that they will not receive the fullest and most passionate of all of our support.

The team is extremely excited to step into the world of Test cricket. After winning a T20 World Cup already and solidfying the domestic game, Test cricket is the last remaining hurdle to take for Ko-orenite cricket. In selecting this team, a lot of care was placed in choosing different kinds of bowlers, sometimes at the expense of batting. This is both the strength and weakness of this team: every bowler has a different style (except arguably the two right-handed fast bowlers). The one discipline not represented by Marsden, Black, Raycraft and Harvey is right-handed spin bowling, which is why yFhireath and Stevenson will occasionally bowl as well. The weakness is that in some cases, stronger bowlers have been ignored (such as Hooligan and Chesterman) in order to get as many different bowling styles in the starting XI. At the same time, batting will not be the strongest either. Stanway, yRheighewn and Baldry should provide runs, and Treadway should contribute, but the tail-end starts at Marsden, so the first six wickets are extremely valuable, as the lower five do not often protect their wickets for long. Fielding is average, though tends a bit towards the stronger side, and Meredith is a decent-to-good wicketkeeper.

Elejamian national cricket team
Selección de críquet de Elejamia
Elejam cerikit tim

Cricket is a fairly new sport to Elejamie, with the first match on Elejamian soil being played in 1960. However, it wasn't until 1967 that a national side was formed and 1974 when the first domestic match was played; a limited-overs game between Aventry and Surter held at the recently-built Aventry Cricket Ground, with Aventry winning by seven wickets. In 1987, a small limited-overs (50 overs per side, to be exact) cricket tournament - the Cross-Tractal Cup - was played, with Wyken winning all of their group games against East Reise, Nuevo Paraíso and Mittedorf before beating Aventry in the semi-final and Autumnia in the final (Autumnia would later go on to win the 1989 edition). Three more editions were played before the tournament was cancelled in 1991 for unknown reasons, with West Reise (who had won the trophy in 1988 and 1990) being allowed to keep it. The tournament was still a success however and, in 2005, a Twenty20 cricket league - the Elejamie Cricket League (or ECL for short) - began. Elejamie also famously won the 9th World T20 in Damakuni, although they were unable to repeat their feat in the following tournament and got eliminated in the group stage, winning only one game.

Test cricket, on the other hand, hasn't reached the same amount of popularity that limited overs has reached. In fact, that first game on Elejamian soil - held at the 35,000-capacity Davenport Baseball Ground, which was eventually demolished in 1987- saw a packed crowd on the opening day but attendance dwindled as the match went on and, by the fifth day, there were 2,500 people left watching. And, despite being formed in 1967, the national team had only played a handful of test cricket matches (the first of which was in 1974 and the most recent being in August last year when they beat Lisander by four wickets). However, despite being a mostly Twenty20 nation (and, indeed, the entire 15-man team is made up of Twenty20 players - all of whom compete in the ECL - who had received extensive training to be test-worthy), Cricket Elejamie are hoping that the Greenblacks will have what it takes to pull off an upset in their three-game test series against Ethane.

Aventry Cricket Ground, on the outskirts of Coventry, AVEN
Image

Home to the Aventry Cricket Club, which represent the titular tract in the Elejamian Cricket League, the Aventry Cricket Ground is the second largest cricket ground in Elejamie with a capacity of roughly 24,000; only the Edgebaston Dome, located in Edgebaston, is larger with a capacity of 53,000. Built in 2013 to replace the old Aventry Cricket Ground, which was located in Pikestown on the Aventry/Burnett border, the new ACG was built closer to the capital, primarily to make it easier for cricket fans to attend games. The Aventry Cricket Ground will host the first test match between Elejamie and Ethane.

Arena San Tibulo, Playa de Rocas, NUPA
Image

Home to the Nuevo Paraíso y Valledorado cricket team, as well as the training ground for both the RC Los Reyes and home ground of the Universidad de la Playa de Rocas university rugby team, the Arena San Tibulo (or Saint Tibulus Arena in English) hosts roughly 13,000 people, although attendance can be increased especially during university rugby games. Named after St. Tibulus, the patron saint of Elejamie, Arena San Tibulo was built in 1974 and, as a result, is the oldest cricket ground in Elejamie that's still in use, as the aforementioned old Aventry Cricket Ground (built in 1967) was demolished in 2016 to make way for housing. The Arena San Tibulo will host the second test between Elejamie and Ethane.

Apparitions Spirits Ground, Portham, ROIY
Image

Located in Portham on the tip of the Island of Rosetta, just off the north coast of the Elejamian mainland, the Apparitions Spirits Ground (sometimes called by its original name Rosetta Cricket Ground or Rosate Cerikithus in the original Iyilim) is not only home to the Rosetta and Elephant Isles cricket team but is the northern-most cricket ground in Elejamie. Built in time for the 2008 season as a home ground after five seasons playing at a makeshift cricket ground in Ashton Park in Rosetta, the main/only city on the titular island, it was where the R&EI cricket team (at the time just called the Rosetta cricket team) won their first ECL grand final in 2016 when they beat the favourites Mittedorf in game five by three wickets. Davenport-based Apparitions Spirits EBC bought the naming rights to the ground in 2014, a deal that's set to last until the end of the 2026 season. The Apparitions Spirits Ground will host the third and final test match between Elejamie and Ethane.

Don't kill any of my players. You can injure one of them but they have to miss the next game. Other than that, go nuts.

  • Hopefully this is alright. Any problems with this, please let me know so I can go back and take out, change or put in anything that needs to be done.
  • Even though they wear all-white in test cricket, feel free to call the national team "The Greenblacks" if you want to.
  • Posting this a little bit earlier just in case Ethane wanted to write about where they'll be playing. I probably won't get an RP up, just to let you know.

About the team
After an average set of Test series a couple of years ago which saw very mixed results and the retirement of captain and legend Bashar al Menzes and then a disappointing World T20, Trajan Muldoney and his team are ready to put things behind them with a positive GCF Test Season 9.

Two series are scheduled in for Apoxian Year 600, a two test series at home against Ethane and then a three test tour of Eura. In 601, Apox will be touring The Kiaser Colonies for a two test tour before hopefully an as yet unscheduled tour against another team.

The team is largely the same as the one which lined up previously, with Keswick Dhawa being the main change at the moment, currently favoured over Tara Kakketa, although this may change depending on results.

Jeff Zanzala and Enda Bryton opening the batting are the type of batsmen who are happy to neuter the effect of the new ball and accumulate a solid base for the innings to be built-off. Trajan Muldoney, the captain, is probably the best batsmen in the side and can also accumulate large scores at a fairly slow pace, although he does have an impressive range of shots in him.

In the middle order, Nancy Washington is a big hitter, and this can usually be a good or a terrible thing. However, with the pressure usually less on her now she bats at four, she has proven herself to be a key member of this side. Organa Arrowsmith is the team's all-rounder, although probably better at the batting side than the bowling, although that continues to improve. Oberon Jessop at six is a majestic driver of the ball, and is capable of, sensibly, scoring runs quickly.

Ezra Girard is the teams wicketkeeper, and is a reasonable batsmen, but perhaps not as good as previous wicketkeepers Apox have had such as Sam Gugh. The veteran spinner and sometimes batswoman Anyi Metrophanes is in at eight and she will be hoping to do well this series, with pace bowler Rachel Gallegos in at 9. Keswick Dhawa and Roy Hamilton-Randall are probably the teams best bowlers and will be hoping to use their array of tricks to upset the oppositions batting rhythms.

Mattijana Announces Squad For Test Return

The MattijanaKricketeBand has announced its squad for their opening series of the World Test Challenge against Darmen, to be held in Mattijana. The 3-match series is the first of the nation's second test season having debuted in season 7.

Having missed season 8 to focus on the World T20 Championships, in which Mattijana narrowly missed out on the semi-finals, whilst long-format specialists settled back into regional cricket.

In addition, they have announced their schedule for the upcoming season with a trio of 3 match series announced and a further one expected to be confirmed shortly.

Marija Vlazic's side were a disappointing 9th of 11 teams in their opening season, but will feel in confident mood going into this season with a number of her players showing good form in the regional championship and a couple of home series mixed in to their schedule.

Squad For 3-Match Home Series Against Darmen

Batters:

Dominika Elana (LH), Pulnika

Less of a traditional test opener, Elana is a busy player, particularly through the leg side and behind square. She has a good range outside off stump however, leaving most of what she can and failing to drive unless full enough.
Her business and tendency to play across the line can leave her vulnerable to the LBW and she has often been accused of not getting forward sufficiently, but Elana is a player who can still make a big score whilst frustrating conventional bowlers.

Ivaljo Radoslavjević (LH), Antalja

Radoslavjević is almost the polar opposite to Elana, an opener modelled in the form of his coach Marija Vlazić, he is happy to occupy the crease and defend anything that is not tripe. His slow scoring rate has let him down in the past, but he has the power to grind out a score, even if it does take him a while.

Marko Žackov (RH, part time off-spin), Istrija

Žackov is the typical busy number three, happy to play all around the ground and rotate the strike. His off-drive is exquisite, but that is not the only way that the player seen as Mattijana's best all-round batsman can quickly accumulate.

Julia Domasič (RH), Pulnika

Domasič is the last of the blockers in Mattijana's batting lineup. The Pulnika player is especially handy against the short ball and can successfully evade the majority of balls sent her way. When scoring, she is strong through the off side with a punched cover drive to rival that of Žackov and soft wrists when playing behind of square.

Jelena Laramazić (RH), Petrovijanska

Laramazić is a member of Mattijana's T20 squad and that tells you all you need to know about her. A powerful counter attacker, even when Mattijana are in a spot of bother, she will either turn the match around or get out for not very many. Either way, it'll be entertaining while it lasts.

Julian Illicić (RH), Petrovijanska

A similar player to Laramazić, Illicić also featured in the world T20 squad and can play 360° around the wicket. He possesses slightly more defensive ability than Laramazić, but still likes to announce himself with some shots and it is likely that Mattijana will go for one or the other.

Bowlers:

Mattias Karamov (Right-arm Swing/Seam), Juliana, Captain

Mattijana's captain is also one of their frontline bowlers. Although he is not express pace, he is a serious danger on a good pitch with his swing and seam movement and has skittled many an experienced batter at home and in Mattijana's debut test season.

He is also handy with the bat and despite not having the finesse of the top order, he has a solid technique and can accumulate a decent total at the back end of the innings.

Kasenka Riegler (Left-arm seam/pace), Istrija

Riegler is much more of a pace bowler than Karamov and has a threatening short ball when the pitch has some bounce in it. If not, he can bowl along a demanding line and he is particularly useful with the zippy new ball in hand.

Dani Komarov (Right-arm seam/pace), Ljubaljanska

A handy first-change bowler, Komarov is another rapid bowler who can hit up to 88 mph on his day. Inconsistency with line and length is his main weakness and he is less of a batter than the likes of Karamov, but he has a few wicket-taking balls in him.

Marija Sanjevič (Left arm medium), Antalja

Sanjevič is a bowler of old, lacking both pace and much swing or bounce, but she is a wily character. She has an array of variations to fox batters including a plethora of slower balls, quicker balls, cutters and yorkers.
She is less useful on flatter decks however due to the lack of pace and may be replaced by a spinner or alternative pacer if required.

Grigor Turnov (Left-arm orthodox), Istrija

Mattijana's frontline spinner, Turnov's skills have been honed on the dry pitches of the southern region of Istrija and may come in handy in the latter stages of Mattijana's matches around the central and southern regions of the country. He also carries experience at the age of 31.

Jessika Nastasič (Right-arm off-spin), Petrovijanska

Mattijana's second spinner will probably not feature in the majority of Mattijana's home games, but will provide capable back up for Turnov in the games when she is required. The finger-spinner can find a restricting length and some niggling turn and is also handy with the bat.

All Rounders:

Fredi Glukspiel (RH bat and Right arm seam), Juliana

Glukspiel has earned the nickname 'Gluksmann', meaning man of luck for his mercurial, but inconsistent performances. When firing, he can give pretty much any bowling attack in the world a run for its money, but he can be notoriously sloggy when out of touch, even against the moving red ball.
His bowling is similarly a mixed bag, but he is a sure wicket taker with his bounce and seam movement, particularly on a responsive pitch, even if he is one of Mattias Karamov's more expensive options. His fielding is one of his more consistent and spectacular areas however. He is usually stationed at third slip or gully to snaffle any slashes that come his way.

Lara Marelika (LH bat and left arm seam/pace), Ljubaljanska

Marelika is a solid backup for glukspiel when he is out of shape with both bat and ball. She is a more conservative player in both disciplines, batting at scoring rate more similar to the openers, but making life difficult for the bowlers.
Her bowling is also more patient, preferring to stick to a tight line and length outside off stump and frustrate batters into an error with a bit of seam movement off the pitch and an array of cutters and slower balls.

Wicket-keepers:

Ali Makarena (RH), Moslena

Makarena is your average wicket keeper batter with a safe pair of hands behind the stumps and a nice consistent rate of scoring. If needed to, he can have a swing, but it's not his natural style and he'd rather chip along rotating the strike with some capable partners. His batting technique can look a little ungainly compared to full-time batters, but it can sometimes come off.

Jan Illicić (LH), Pulnika

A very different player to Makarena, Illicić is an equally solid keeper, but a much more versatile batter. He can dig in if needed, playing with surprising discipline for a high-class limited overs player, but he has the shots if needed, particularly down the ground. He may not feature in all of Mattijana's games, but he will be in against some of Mattijana's lower-ranked opposition.

Head Coach and Batting Coach: Marija Vlazic

Marija Vlazic was a batter of yesteryear, a defensive wall based for the majority of her career on Mattijana's south coast in Istrija. Solid in defence and conventional in her attacking shots, she retired with one of the regional championship's highest averages.

That mentality is something she has carried into her coaching with top-order batters well-drilled in defensive tactics against the new ball, in particular swing and spin bowling. Get out with an expansive drive or an aerial slog and you will get an earful. Fail to move your feet and the same fate awaits. None of that slappy, swinging stuff from T20 will do. Play straight, move your foot to the pitch of the ball and leave the good length balls outside off stump.
Having said that, Vlazic has recognised the firepower of some of her batsmen, in particular those in the middle order. Fredi Glukspiel, Jelena Laramazic and Ali Makarena are all capable of striking the ball and were allowed the license to hit out at a number of points in Mattijana's debut series when a declaration or large first innings lead was on the cards.
In general though, Vlazic's focus will be on keeping her top order at the crease against some of the world's finest bowlers.

Bowling Coach: Dominik Lassman

Also a regional legend, Dominik Lassman's swing and seam bowling was perfectly adapted to the moist conditions in Juliana, at the northern end of Mattijana, and he is also well-placed to pass his wisdom down to the current generation of fast bowlers. Altering techniques to allow maximum movement and pace.

Lassman certainly knows his stuff, but whether he also has the expertise to aid Mattijana's spinners is another matter and more of a concern for the team.

KatarinaBula, Petrovijanka:

Image

Ground Modifier: +2

The KatarinaBula is regarded by most Mattijanans as the home of Mattijanan cricket. The first club in the country was founded in the traditionally up market district of St Katarina and has since been updated to house around 18000 spectators on its banks and in its stands. An experience at the ground is a traditional and relaxing Mattijanan test experience, featuring the grassy seating areas, local cakes and a backdrop of shrubbed hills.

Situated in the dryer Mattijanan interior, it offers more to spinners and, despite the odd flat match, generally results in mid-scoring games. Cracks and slight deterioration mean there is a slight advantage to be gained from batting first, however it is the quality of bowling and batting, normally with and against the cocktail of seam and spin, that will decide this match, not a minefield of a pitch.
The ground is located in the South of the compact theatre city of Puljanka, located roughly halfway between Petrovijanka and Revinka on the way from the capital to the coast. There is a reliable high-speed train network linking the 3 cities and tram links are a convenient way of getting around Puljanka itself, which boasts a wide range of cultural attractions including its famous plays.

Stadijo Izola, Izola

Image

Ground modifier: -4

Situated on the South Coast of Mattijana, just outside the South's biggest city, Revinka, the Stadijo Izola is found on a small sandy island that is connected to the mainland by a 150m bridge.
The venue also offers a peaceful and traditional vibe with a capacity of only 20,000 and a less frantic atmosphere. There is a shuttle service from Revinka centre to the mainland side of the stadium.
The Izola will host the second test against Darmen. The pitch is greener than the pitch in Puljanka due to the moisture from the nearby sea and is normally a bowlers pitch, albeit a more consistent one than the deck at the KatarinaBula. There is no real advantage to be gained from the toss.

Stadijo Kolmetzov, Petrovijanka

Image

Ground Modifier: +1

The main cricket stadium in Petrovijanka, the Mattijanan capital, as well as the second biggest in the country, is the venue for the first test. It has a capacity of 70,000 and offers a consistently superb atmosphere, but a heavily partisan crowd. Due to a large capacity, 15,000 seats have been allocated to away supporters which could make for a more balanced and exciting atmosphere. Saying this, Mattijanan supporters are loud, passionate and may appear intimidating, but are not at all hostile or combative towards foreigners.
The stadium is situated on the West edge of Petrovijanka island, a fairly large natural island in the middle of the Sava Petrov river, where the central area of Petrovijanka is found. It is surrounded by a mix of restaurants and is not far away from the direct centre of Petrovijanka where the majority of restaurants and hotels are found.
The Kolmetzov will host the third test, which will be a day-night test match. The pitch is generally a mixed one, starting as a batters wicket before turning into a bowlers wicket towards the end of the test. Batting first is generally an advantage.

XI For the 1st test against Darmen in Puljanka:

Dominika Elana
Ivaljo Radoslavjević
Marko Žackov
Julia Domasič
Jelena Laramazič
Jos Illicic
Fredi Glukspiel
Mattias Karamov
Jessika Nastasič
Grigor Turnov
Kasenka Riegler

The Liventia Cricketing Board of Authority has released its 23-man pool for the upcoming World Test Challenge season. It consists of a 14-man central contracts list and a further nine men who hold supplementary contracts, and will form the basis of the Liventian squad for its Test matches this season.

There is only one notable change to the pool from last season: the family theme continues with Matt Goudreau, the brother of Garland, picking up a supplementary contract. That makes four sibling pairs in the team: James and Daniel Quinn, Max and Sean Finney, and Ollie and Brad Kerr are the other three.

Garland Goudreau has announced this will be his final Test season at 34; he has also given up the wicketkeeping gloves and the second vice-captaincy. Michael Sarrin takes over behind the stumps, while Dave Edwards' rapid rise to the top is capped with a central contract and the vice-captaincy.

It is an ageing squad, with the youngest members being 23-year-olds Peter Finch and Matt Goudreau; the former captain Max Finney and his old assistant Matt Geach are the oldest at 35. Geach and Daniel Quinn have also indicated this will be their final season playing international cricket; Finney has stated his intention to go on for "as long as my body will allow me".

The following grounds will host Liventia's seven home Test matches this season:
Matchday 1 v Eura: Park Central Oval, Orean
The 'home of Liventian cricket' (although the CBA are based in Folenisa). The first of its standard two matches a year, despite the fact there's never a positive result here. A batsman's dream, usually flat as a road. Has produced most of Liventia's highest-scoring Test innings. Capacity: 37,500. End names: Lothian End, Poplar End. (+6)

Matchday 2 v Eura: The Bastion Dover Cricket Ground, Dover
Not in any way named after the Euran city, The Bastion is traditionally a spinners' paradise. A new Test pitch was laid before the previous season and it is now far more even for both bat and ball, but it deteriorates quickly on day 4 to still give the turn players are more accustomed to here. Capacity: 28,225. End names: Town End, Clock End. (-2)

Matchday 3 v Eura: Island Cricket Arena, Schimpol
The only Liventian ground located off the mainland. Friendly to the pacemen, thanks to the ground being located just inland from the coast. The sea breeze often picks up, and aids seam and swing – not to mention makes catching high balls slightly tricky. Capacity: 27,500. End names: City End, Mainland End. (-2)

Matchday 4 v Eura: Folenisa Cricket Ground, Folenisa
Probably the ground which players most enjoy playing at, with both bat and ball able to dominate at times. No surprise then that the CBA would rather stay based here than Orean, and potentially be associated with boring cricket. Look up at the conditions, not down at the wicket. Capacity: 25,600. End names: Desert End, Walton Road End. (±0)

Matchday 7 v Barunia: NCE Oval, City Centre
More in it for the bowlers than at Park Central, but still quite friendly to batsmen. Bowlers will be tested if it's hot. Capacity: 37,000. End names: Pavilion End, Academy End. (+3)

Matchday 8 v Barunia: Park Central Oval
Back to Park Central, with a different pitch to be used. The grounds crew are promising it'll be different. We doubt it. Still won't be anything in it for the poor bowlers. (+5)

Matchday 9 v Barunia: Folenisa Cricket Ground, Folenisa
With only five grounds passed fit by the CBA to host Test cricket, a seven-match home season grants one lucky ground aside from Park Central a second Test. The CBA have opted for the FCG, which will use a different pitch to the Eura game. (+1)

Liventia will make use of a DRS review only if:
- If it is an obvious error by the on-field umpire; or if it is not, the following apply:
- If batting, the batsman involved is James Quinn, Max Finney, Dylan Hennessey, or Ollie Kerr and he has made at least 35; or
- If batting, the batsman involved is one of the others and he has made at least 50; or
- If batting, the batsman involved is a recognised batsman and only the tail is left; or
- If bowling, the opposition batsman is one of the three best batsmen on the team and has made at least 30; or
- If bowling, the opposition batsman is someone else has made at least 40.

If you RP first and create a scorecard, I ask that you also do one for my side. Please don't kill any of my players, and serious injuries should be discussed with me beforehand. Retired hurts are fine, within reason.

Liventia seek revenge as Eura pay a visit
OREAN— "It still hurts. Of course it does."

Ollie Kerr remains haunted by the scale of the devastation Liventia suffered last season in Eura. Yes, on paper they came away with a 1–1 series draw from three games.

But that didn't tell the story. The story of making 528 runs in an innings and somehow losing that match by 315 runs. The ignominy of being bowled out for 70 in 19 overs.

"That was… I still don't know how to describe it," Kerr says. The Liventian captain was criticised for enforcing the follow-on, a decision which kept Liventia in the field for 255 overs before their fourth-innings collapse.

"It hasn't made me any less likely to enforce it," the 32-year-old all-rounder insists. "It was a team decision, the bowlers were happy with it at the time despite having bowled for 98 overs or whatever it was. They weren't being tested, particularly, nor carted around.

"It is still a team decision, and if the leadership group feels it's a follow-on situation then of course we will enforce it."

Liventia saved last season's series with a big 196-run win in the final Test. But Kerr is sure there won't be a repeat this year.

"We're on home soil. We want revenge for that humiliation. I won't say it'll be a whitewash, but that's what we're going for."

There has been scant change to the national pool since that tour to Eura, although Liventia are unlikely to go with exactly the same side that lost by 315 and then won by 196 a week later.

Garland Goudreau has given up the gloves since last season, meaning Michael Sarrin is likely to keep wicket, while questions remain about the exact bowling attack to play at Orean given its traditional flat pitch.

Liventia XI to play Eura, first Test: JCA Quinn, MA Finney, DA Hennessey, DHJ Edwards, GP Goudreau, OH Kerr (captain), MQ Sarrin (wk), JFM Kennedy, MC Geach, DM Quinn, JPK Adams
Opening bowlers: JPK Adams, OH Kerr; first change: MC Geach, DM Quinn; fifth bowler: JFM Kennedy; MA Finney and DA Hennessey to bowl part-time spin if required.

Prepared by the Ministry of Culture and Society
THE COMMONWEALTH OF THE PLOUGH ISLANDS
A Cricket Tourist's Guide

The Plough Islands are a small, temperate, Anglophone, pine-covered, socialist republic, often pithily summarised as "we may be communists, but at least we are nice about it" and you will not find many disagreeing with that sentiment. Instead of a Warsaw Pact secret police and rubber-stamp legislature, there is a relatively relaxed attitude to dissent and a keen awareness of where the country stands in the world at large.

Despite the local currency, the shilling, not being fully convertible, the essentials of life - food, board, and entertainment - cost less than would perhaps be expected. Visitors may find the pace of life slower and the choices somewhat fewer than they are used to, but there is nonetheless plenty to do; take in the the imposing crags of Redcliff or New Dalmatia, take a tour of the colonial architecture and monuments of Sutton, or take a break and just get some fish and chips by the docks in Foxdale. Until the mist comes in, at least; the islands enjoy a mild climate but sea fogs are a constant yet unpredictable year-round feature on the islands. You will have no need for suntan lotion, but please do pack several jumpers.

Plough Islanders themselves are a hardy lot - most are the descendants of British settlers who arrived on the previously uninhabited islands starting in 1750 and, putting down roots, stayed through all the hardships, exploitation, gradual revolution, and the upheaval following independence in 1960. As a result, most of the population are fiercely attached to, and engage actively in the running of, their country, with green and amber flags flying all around the islands. Egalitarianism and compassion have become ingrained in society over the years from primary school upwards, and the average Plough Islander is more than happy to stop and listen to you ask or tell them anything, replying in a lilting dialect of English distinguished by very few contractions and run-on sentences.

They also enjoy their cricket - the entire country does not quite shut down for a One-Day International, but it is by several orders of magnitude the most popular sport, and - as an institution that remained constant during the transition to independence and the present day - a source of much national pride and affection. Plough Islanders are generally knowledgable about the sport due to extensive media coverage, and given the country's small population and close-knit community many spectators will have a personal connection to one or more of the players out in the field, giving matches a slightly intimate feel.

on the 17th June 2018, the Plough Islands Cricket Association official programme wrote:
BACKSTORY: ILYA LEBED

"My mum and dad came over from the Soviet Union to work on the nuclear program in the 1980s, and they stayed, as so many people did, got married, and that led to me and my sisters. So I am Soviet, Russian, ethnically, but they wanted us to be included in our new home so we were brought up speaking English, we never learned Russian outside of the occasional song or lullaby. My dad in particular 'went native' and took up the culture and language to a really great degree and that was how I got started.
"I did gymnastics at primary school, but that was just during the week, so during the weekend he took me down to the cricket club (Eleuthera CSC) to just hang around and watch him play, and they let us catch balls on the boundary around cow corner, and then I started with the junior teams and, well, things progressed and I was keeping wicket for the seconds when I was eleven. And here I am now!
"I was really just in fear for so long about coming out because sexuality never got discussed at home, or if it was it was in very abstract terms, so when it all happened I was frightened of the consequences but my family have been brilliant about it. I could not have asked for more acceptance from them or from Alexander, he knows how my mind works better than I do and is happy to support me.
"I was worried about how the team would react because, you know, there are stereotypes about it for a reason, and I was really not in a good place when Alexander came along to the nets. But Graeme (Holt) cut it in my direction at about a hundred, hundred and twenty kilometres an hour at close range and I spilled the catch quite badly, and Alexander just took the ricochet one handed! Graeme just pointed and went "Ilya, clear off, out - Boyfriend, welcome to the team, get his gloves off him!" and that took all the tension out of it.
"I am really, well, nervous but tremendously excited about the Tests. I want to do myself and my country justice as far as batting goes as well as my wicket keeping, I have spent time in the nets with Bridget (Trevithick, batting coach) working on being more than just defensive, and I think I am getting better in that respect. Everybody knows what these Tests mean for all 140,000 of us, nobody knows what is going to happen, but everybody feels that we have given ourselves the best chance possible of giving a good account of ourselves."

Freedom Of The Press
17th June 2018, Sutton

The sun's early morning rays pierced through a misty, icy looking - but not feeling - Plough Islander sky, and they fell on what would shortly be a historic corner of Sutton. Half the population of the islands seemed to have converged peacefully on the area around December Park, and while it did not - normally - take much provocation to assemble a huge audience for cricket, this would be the first ever Global Cricket Federation sanctioned Test match played by the islands, against the Lusophone tropical nation of Lisander, and everybody wanted to take away a story to tell.
Already women, men, families, children, and couples had begun to fill up the stands and scaffolds inside the ground. The national stadium had been temporarily enlarged around the Trotsky Avenue end to hold up to 20,000 people, and there seemed little doubt that capacity would be reached.

At the other end of the stadium, deep within the pavilion, a bell rang and Ian Goswell shifted his wheelchair forwards out of the lift. He had played here before, but since being confined to this contraption he had refocused his energies into reporting and telling the stories of his sport to the entire country, as chief cricket correspondent for Plough Radio. A well-loved voice around the islands, he had the gift of being able to use and absorb words in exactly the right way to be able to convey as much of the occasion as possible. And now - two hours before play was due to begin - Ian was on a mission, and as he manoeuvred around Plough Islands Cricket Association stewards, he could pick up a familiar - if unexpected - voice. It was talking about how it could never cope with fast bowling. And then another familiar voice, indicating what Ian sought was located in that direction.

"How is pace a problem? Were you not a pilot? Surely if you can handle that you could take on pace I would have thought?"
"Well," the first voice paused, "you can see further above the clouds, and you spend enough time in the air to know how objects move on trajectories and around the curve of the canopy. Also, the other planes are not generally headed straight for your face so you can rely on your instincts not to panic."
Ian turned the corner to find himself on the balcony, and a tall, blonde, slightly greying man finishing his point. "In any case, I was a commissar by then. I gave presentations on the whistling bullets of fascism, not the whistling bouncers of Kulayev." The figure turned, and Ian was greeted by the familiar face - as the voice had been - of his country's leader, flanked by national team captain Kevin Laing and team-mate and general force of nature Audrey Leggett, observing the final preparations.

"Ah, Comrade Goswell!" Dale Piper, Premier of the islands, grasped Ian's hand and shoulder firmly as they embraced. 'Comrade' was ironic; Ian was not a political animal, but he and Dale had a lot of good history going back to the latter's time playing for the Air Force in the Sutcliffe Shield. There was always a senior government figure as the president of the Plough Islands Cricket Association, but normally they never got this involved.
"So, are you angling to get into the team?" Ian joked after the pleasantries.
"If only! I was just telling Audrey, I was never good against pace. The Lisandrans have brought some really quick looking bowlers, I think Graeme and Matthew are better equipped against them than I would be - and they have youth on their side, I suspect."
"They might not be a threat - according to the Wisden people, we have a spinner's paradise!" Kevin waggled his hands as he interjected, wilfully undermining the authority of that statement. "I would like to see what they make of Highrock in February going on that..."
"Uncharted jungle?" Audrey suggested. "Cratered wasteland? Slime...?"
"The point is," Kevin cut off Audrey before she could say something very unstatesmanlike, "relatively it is a road. Andrew likes it, he wants to get up in the Lisandrans' faces - politely, of course"

"Is Andrew in the final eleven then?" Ian asked, steering things in the direction of the information he sought. "How long before the teamsheets?"
"Teamsheets? They happened this morning, Ian" Kevin reached behind him. "...hot off the word processor! Obviously - are you watching, Comrade Premier? - you cannot see this..." Not even the state media were allowed to see teamsheets until just before the match began, and crowds were still streaming into the stands, but Kevin was proffering the letterheaded paper down to Ian and everyone present was happy, as ever, to ignore this particular convention.

Firm Victory for Apox in Warm-Up Match against Mareibat

It was a sunny early summer day in Dwile, as a packed out crowd packed into the Benson Bridge ground to watch the warm-up test match between Apox and Mareibat. Trajan Muldoney won the toss and elected to bat on a fairly flat pitch not anticipated to cause the batsmen many problems. However, it wasn't to be as the Mareibatian attack, spearheaded by captain Olé Farnham ripped through the lower order, getting the wickets of Bryton and Muldoney fairly cheaply, with Jeff Zanzala getting out to the spin of Polly Jacobs. Nancy Washington put on a stand largely with Ezra Girard and Rachel Gallegos, both batting competently but not spectacularly as the wickets continued to fall, with Apox eventually setting Mareibat a total of 259, with tea being taken early.

However, Mareibat struggled with many of the problems which the Apoxian batsmen faced, with Rachel Gallegos and Roy Hamilton-Randall taking early wickets before falling a couple of lethal Organa Arrowsmith spells, in the evening light and the morning of the second day led to Mareibat only being able to post a total of 159, with Apox beginning their second innings shortly after lunch on the second day, Arrowsmith's final figures being an impressive 5 for 26.

With the sun still shining, the Apoxian openers gave a good account of themselves, Enda Bryton eventually falling for 52 after tea with the score at 97 for 1. Jeff Zanzala and Trajan Muldoney then carried on, with Muldoney continuing to bat with the wickets occasionally falling, eventually reaching his third test hundred on the morning of the third day, with Mareibat requiring 408 runs in their final innings to win.

Hermann Prost was out early on, before Julian Victor and Don French dug in in difficult batting conditions to steady the ship, with French falling with the score at 123. Kalista McGregor carried on the work, falling on the fourth day for 39. However, after the third wicket fell, the Mareibatian side largely collapsed thanks to a good all around Apoxian bowling attack, the bright spot for the Mareibatians being Julian Victor's 117 runs which gave the team hope. However, on the evening of the fourth day, they were finally bowled out for 275, handing Apox a deserved victory against a much better Mareibat side than expected, and standing them in good stead for their tour of Eura to come.

Provisional Euran Test Squad to for GCF9

Staff

Head Coach: Michael Overdale
Fitness Coach: Callum Oldey
Batting Coach: Graham Keane
Bowling Coach: Daniel Aldair
Fielding Coach: Jeremy Davis

Stadia
Stadium – Location – Club – Capacity – Style Modifier

Brigham Oval – Brigham - Brigham CC - 90,000 - 0 – This huge arena is hallowed ground for Euran cricket and is probably the nation’s most balanced Test pitch. Its gargantuan banks of safe standing terraces split over two tiers are unusual to say the least, but also representative of the huge popularity of cricket in the region and the boisterous fans who turn up. Make no mistake, in terms of noise, this is the most intimidating venue in the country. The pitch is of a good quality and usually slightly green, making it fertile ground for bowlers (especially in overcast conditions) but usually a firm enough batting wicket for good batsmen to score on. Selected for 1st Test v Apox

Directus County Cricket Ground – Ramsey, Directus – Directus CC – 72,500 - minus 3 - Beware, for spinners lurk at the DCCG. Directus is notorious in Eura and maybe even a bit controversial for its pitch, which almost always forms a hard surface for pace bowling and scoring runs at first before degrading into a cracked minefield on which spin reigns supreme. Euran opening batsman Alan Royce is a specialist at his home ground, and touring teams should plan thoroughly for facing the spin bowling of another local, Greg Lark. He regularly wins games for his club here and could be a deadly proposition to bat against on a fourth or fifth day pitch. Stadium itself is surprisingly flat for a big ground like Brigham, which partially explains how the middle can end up like a dustbowl in hot weather. Selected for 2nd Test v Apox

Castle Green – Bastion – Capital CC – 81,235 – plus 3 – The most historic things in Eura usually reside in Bastion’s old centre despite the turmoil they have had to survive in the past. Castle Green is no exception, embedded deep within a megacity that now extends for dozens of miles in every direction. Expansions and renovations in the past have given it a formidable capacity but the stadium is not new or fresh. It has three different unique designs of stand plus a huge pavilion. Castle Green is a firm batting wicket and well maintained but certainly not flat, meaning pace and good batting sides usually duke it out for the spoils. Selected for 3rd Test v Apox

Steel Field – Holdenberg – Holdenberg CC – 68,450 – plus 4 – Hardy as its massive workforce, the Steel Field pitch lives up to its name as a rock hard track favouring batsman with only aggressive fast bowlers likely to succeed against them. The stadium itself is large with steep sides, but one noticeably smaller quarter of the oval encirclement hosts an older stand and the classic pavilion.

The Waterfront Bowl – Falourr – Falourr CC and formerly Docklands CC – 52,000 – minus 5 – The Waterfront is quite unlike other cricket grounds in the east of Eura in that it is not dry and does not experience long periods of little wind and noticeable heat due to its proximity to the Endemian Ocean. When it’s hot in Falourr it is humid, and when it is cold in Falourr it is just wet. A perfect playground for swing bowlers and very difficult to bat on. This ground is the most likely to experience rain delays but also has the most sophisticated systems for dealing with them. It is a thoroughly modern and recently upgraded stadium but also a remarkably beautiful one, similar in design to the Aspel Dellaro football stadium in Sameba which is chiselled into the coastline comfortably above the water level.

Squad
Name - Age - ECC club - Bats - Bowls - Playing style notes

Batsmen

Alan Royce - 38 - Directus - Left - Left Arm Med - Somewhat inexplicably still going veteran batsman who has played almost every test Eura have been in. A formidable opening batsman who is difficult to get out once he gets in and scores quickly. Keeps his shots low. Weakness is fast bowling at legs. Aging like fine wine but will surely call it a day soon.

Andrew Elland - 34 - Brigham - Right - Right Arm Off Spin - The flashiest of the top four batsmen who seeks to score quickly and is quite the shot player - Eura's most naturally talented player with the bat. Scored big runs in GCF8. Very able against spin. Less good against real pace and bounce.

Liam Tunbridge (Captain) - 33 - Brigham - Right - Right Arm Med - Similar to Elland but more functional and indisputably the best batsman in the team, with a cooler head and little ego. Most likely of top four to go for big shots and physically imposing.

Matt Leech - 36 - Spartans - Right - Right Arm Med - Most aggressive of the upper order batsmen with excellent technique but no longer in the starting XI. Vulnerable to leg spin and spin in general. The most capable bowler of the non-bowling specialists, has taken wickets at Test level. A real fighter who has defied expectations to compete and unsurprisingly the biggest sledger on the team.

Cameron Lawson - 29 - Harther - Left - Left Arm Med - Talented but inconsistent opener (currently being deployed in the middle order as an experiment) who has the ability to get big scores, but takes too many risks and has lapses of judgement. Risky choice at the top level after patchy form in GCF8.

Ewan Dodd - 26 - Farrenton - Right - Right Arm Slow - A true attrition batsman. Low scoring rate with a refined defensive technique. Especially useful on slow pitches.

Marvin Raleigh - 23 - Harther - Left - Right Arm Slow - Inexperienced but solid middle order batsman who may not be fielded until the yet to be scheduled final series of the season

All Rounders and Wicket Keepers

Tom Grant (Vice Captain) - 31 - Holdenberg - Right - Right Arm Fast Med - Bombastic player and a bit of a cult hero in Eura. Has a very good record in Tests and international club cricket despite the circumstances of Euran cricket in the years leading up to GCF8. Sometimes careless when batting but a serious threat if allowed to get in, powerful batsman who can score for fun and unsurprisingly is very handy in T20 and ODI formats too. Equally menacing as a bowler due to ability to get swing and seam movement in varied conditions. Will often be the key to unsettling high quality batsmen due to determination and skill.

Shaun Folkstone - 31 - Harther - Right - Right Arm Fast - Eura's best hope when they first got going and perhaps still the star. Started his career purely as a bowler but some spectacular batting performances in Tests transformed him into an all rounder partner for Grant. Has the ability to score big runs as a batsman if Eura need them, thriving when under pressure. His true calling is as a leading bowler despite stats often indicating otherwise. Blistering pace (the only Euran who bowls consistently over 90mph) and his accuracy on line and length make him a difficult prospect to bat against, but on pitches unfavourable to pace bowling he usually has to take on a defensive role.

Tim Carpenter - 32 - Capital - Right - Right Arm Slow - A seasoned wicket keeper who has a strong leadership influence on the team. Definitely the best Eura has had behind the stumps. Very capable as a batsman too though not quite as threatening as his predecessor Jeremy Davis. Likes a good slog if the situation requires it.

Jason Perry - 30 - Directus - Left - Left Arm Off Spin - Unusual for a wicket keeper in that he isn't that good at batting, not a tail end batsman but lower order. Questionable record in top level cricket. Very little experience at international level due to dominance of Carpenter. Nevertheless can be found at his best on spin friendly pitches with close fields, a very concentrated figure who plays to win.

Bowlers

Andy Harrison – 33 – Capital – Right – Right Arm Fast – The nearest the team has to the perfect ideal of a hard hitting seamer. Pacey and tall, extracts maximum bounce from hard pitches and gets surprisingly good movement off the seam. Like Folkstone he can struggle in unfriendly conditions and leaks more runs than Folkstone or Grant regardless. Least consistent of those three bowlers but probably the most intimidating for batsmen who struggle against short balls. At 33 his age is starting to show and he will likely be replaced this season unless he hits a formidable run of form.

Greg Lark – 34 – Directus – Left – Left Arm Spin – Lark was the anorak’s choice for Eura’s key player until GCF8, where he utterly mauled Liventia in the famous (or infamous if you're from that country) "Euracide" test in Directus. The most intelligent player in the side and the most reliable, and likely to be enemy number one for the home side in Eura's opening series this season. Years of bowling on Eura’s dry eastern and humid south western wickets has made him a deadly opponent even for top level batsmen, as they found out last time Eura played Tests regularly. Unorthodox for a left arm spinner in that he can spin both to off and leg effectively. Most dangerous on dry pitches against boxed in batsmen looking to score runs. The worst thing you can do against Lark is attack him on the fifth day.

Nick Fodrell – 35 – Falourr – Right – Right Arm Off Spin – A much more conventional bowler than Lark and has a lower skill ceiling. No longer a starting XI player. However he can be very effective at containing batsmen and bringing down the run rate, and is adept at taking care of lower order batsmen overstaying their welcome. Much more likely than Lark to be hit around the ground and won’t play in games where Eura need four pace bowlers.

Oscar Greenwood – 27 – Spartans – Right – Right Arm Fast Med – Fine seamer who has worked his way into the first team. Very good at club level but yet to translate this to the international stage and has lots to prove. Lacks control during long periods of bowling yet he does have a record of getting wickets.

Rhys Higgins – 24 – Borderlands – Left – Left Arm Fast Med – Great ability but also inexperienced, this bowler for the small County club of Borderlands has been a real headache at club level on green southwestern pitches, troubling all kinds of batsmen with his controlled demeanour and difficult to read seam bowling.

Seb Haynes - 22 - Harther - Right Arm Fast - Although nominally a fast bowler the rookie Haynes is less known for his pace and more his deadly swing game, much like Daniel Aldair of times gone by. Unlikely to play against Liventia unless things get desperate.

The poster behind this is almost certainly Liventia or Apox, the current de facto GCF co-presidents.

Raycraft and Harvey didn't bat and only yFhireath and Stevenson come out to bat in both innings. This isn't a textbook win for the Green and Blue (more like white with some green and blue), this is an amazing way to get started on cricket's biggest stage. Greencaster was the backdrop, the biggest cricket stadium in Ko-oren.

yFhireath and Stevenson started off great, settling in just fine, and got off to a quick start. This also almost cost them their wicket, some miscommunication getting them almost run out on two occasions as well as dropped edges. It seemed that not just our openers, but also the Tobiasia slips were nervous to start the season. The slightly high risk play paid off with Stevenson soon reaching the first 50 for a Ko-orenite batsman ever, and yFhireath coming close but ultimately he was the first ever wicket to fall for the Green and Blue. The opening stand went for 72 runs in the end. The middle-order batsmen brought some calmer play, first the short-lived Stevenson/Stanway partnership, the longer lived Stanway/yRheighewn partnership, and the very long lived yRheighewn/Baldry partnership. Baldry would end up recording the best batting performance for Ko-oren, and not one that is likely to be outdone any time soon. Baldry survived all the way until the end, facing (so to speak) 50 overs and four more. He came so close to a century and a half, but given the time it was decided to retire the innings early. Meanwhile, Stevenson, Stanway, yRheighewn all recorded 50s - yRheighewn even almost reached his first century, but tossed his wicket away on an unecessary run out.

Blake proved a plague to the batting lineup, retiring both openers, big wickets to take, as well as the first wicket after the huge yRheighewn/Baldry partnership, preventing Baldry to set up another big partnership with Treadway. After this, Tobiasia still had trouble but they did take the next wickets fairly quickly, Sandi, Harrison and Nihart all taking a wicket each. Something to address would be the three leg before wickets, two of which came against (medium-)fast bowlers, both giving the feeling that much more was in store for Stevenson and Marsden.

All criticism about bowling aside, the approach of just taking one of each type of bowlers seemed to work over the five-day period. The first over didn't last even 80 overs, leaving the impression of a very long ODI innings, and the Tobiasia batsmen couldn't get comfortable against the everchanging barrage of left, right, spin and pace. After some debate, the follow-on was enforced and as expected, the bowlers had more trouble this time around. Most of Tobiasia's batsmen came on twice on day three, which was demoralising as much as it was tiring to the Dragonflies' bowlers. Still, before too long, the second Tobiasia innings was over and yFhireath and Stevenson slowly but surely reeled in the first Test victory for the national cricket team. A 10-wicket win is something that didn't even occur in our wildest dreams, but here we are. Not only has Ko-oren taken its first steps in the grandest stage cricket has to offer, the team finish the first week of the new season first in the standings and all are eager to find out what comes next. Willowbourne will be the next theatre of the 3-part play that is Ko-oren versus Tobiasia, followed by the final part in Maynard.

MKB Announces Full Test Season Schedule

Image

Mattijanan number 3 Marko Zackov drives for 4 during the second of Mattijana's GCF 7 tests against Tobiasia, which they won by an innings and 66 runs.

By Jonas Agnitz, MFO Cricket Correspondant

The MattijanaKricketeBand has followed up its announcement of the squad for their first match of the new Test series against Darmen with the release of a full schedule for the season. The 12 individual matches permitted by the GCF this season have been filled by 4 3-match series against Darmen, Barunia, Tobiasia and Liventia.

In addition, two of the 4 series will be held on Mattijanan soil, including the one against the current world number one-ranked team Liventia, which will finish off the season unless Mattijana manage to qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament. Their opener against Darmen will also be held in Mattijana with the venues already announced.

The scheduling is sensible from the MKB. The match against Liventia is preceded by away series against rivals Tobiasia, a re-match of the two-match series during GCF 7 that Mattijana won 1-0, and Barunia, who are ranked just one place higher than Mattijana. There is a good mix of conditions, quality of opposition and a few rivalries that should keep the season interesting right up to the end of the season.

It would maybe have been nice to have a second series against a mid-ranked side such as Lisander or Eastfield Lodge, but with the number of possible games cut from 14 to 12, MKB head Mariana Kreutzberg and head coach Marija Vlazic have set up series which promise to be very exciting.

The series against Darmen is particularly useful for Mattijana as they look to re-adjust to test cricket and shake off any T-20 rust they may have. The rust was clearly evident in their first innings of match one as they were skittled for just 166 on a decent batting track, with some really loose shots played. Dominika Elana got out cheaply playing across the line and Ivaljo Radoslavjevic wasn't at his sharp best when he was trapped LBW early on for 23.

The players who played in Mattijana's world T20 campaign looked especially short of the patience needed to build a successful test innings and I can only imagine they got an earful from their coach Marija Vlazic because the way they came out in the second innings was completely different.

Radoslavjević was back to his watchful and wary best against the Darmeni attack whilst Elana stuck to playing with a straighter bat against the seamers. When she departed for 40, Marko Žackov looked in much more fluent touch and with the ball sufficiently worn down, he was able to work the ball around beautifully for his century, demonstrating the importance of a strong start.

That made some mid-order boshing much more suitable and Illicić, Glukspiel and Karamov all excelled. However it was Darmen's bowling selection that was equally to blame for their eventual demise.

The deck in Puljanka is one that traditionally favours spin and although a good line and length from the pace bowlers was enough to keep Mattijanan batsman nicking off in their first innings, the lack of a second spinner did for them the second time around as the pitch deteriorated. As much as Dorian Myers looked threatening from one end. The seamers looked hugely ineffective from the other and Mattijana were able to relieve the pressure.

That was in stark contrast to Darmen's second innings where Grigor Turnov and partner Jessika Nastasić were able to stifle the run-rate, tie the batsman down and frustrate them into errors as they were bowled out for 211.

The temptation for the tourists would be to go for a second twirler for the second test, but it's in Izola and the ball will almost certainly swing and bounce, the complete opposite to the drier environment of Puljanka. The match will probably be lower-scoring and being able to read the moving-ball is a must. Every run counts.

How Mattijana respond is another matter. I would hope they still focus on where they can improve from the first innings rather than becoming complacent because of the second, but an improved performance all-round is needed and is what I would expect now the squad is aware of what the demands of test cricket are.

Team for 2nd Test Against Darmen:

Ivaljo Radoslavjević
Dominika Elana
Marko Žackov
Julia Domasič
Jelena Laramazič
Jos Illicić
Fredi Glukspiel
Mattias Karamov
Grigor Turnov
Maria Sanjevič
Kasenka Riegler

The poster behind this is almost certainly Liventia or Apox, the current de facto GCF co-presidents.

Hurrah! I was honestly expecting a bit worse than that - I was going to say Zimbabwe in 1992, but it occurs to me that we've, um, basically had just the same result as Zimbabwe did in 1992, with a draw in our first Test...
The players for Lisander came from last season's roster with a few mods to account for the passage of time - if I need to make any more changes, let me know. Apologies that there's no story bit in this RP too - I want to get it up before the next Test.
Here's to more good matches for the Foxes!

on the 18th June 2018, the Plough Islands Gazette wrote:
PLOUGH ISLANDS HELD TO DRAW BY LISANDER IN FIRST TEST
by Denis Wormwood, Sporting Correspondent, in Sutton

Cautious expectation slowly morphed into realistic satisfaction for the Plough Islands today at December Park; after a brief delay at the start of this last day of play in the inaugural Test to allow the overnight fog to clear, Lisander slid briefly to 74-5, thanks to some excellent bowling by Matthew Davy (almost nonchalantly picking up a return catch from Lício Hagen) and Andrew Baxter, taking their totals for the innings to two wickets apiece, but captain Martin Hery and wicketkeeper Dídac Sclia halted the decline and settled in, whereafter circumstances seemed to conspire against the Foxes.

Robbed for the day of the services of lead spinner Naomi Salisbury due to an overnight stomach bug, and with Baxter and Colin McCarthy tiring, captain Kevin Laing resorted to his own and Nigel Hunter's part-time bowling, which worked out as the scoring rate - but, also, the wickets - dried up. Sclia made a battling 58, and Hery took very few risks and fended off the occasional spin of Hunter and Audrey Leggett to reach his century just after tea, to a standing ovation and more than a modicum of respect from the still-large crowd. About an hour later, they were on their feet again as Laing bowled the last of the innings' 136 overs and followed through with his right arm extended to shake hands and share the honours with Hery and Lisander.

The match had begun very brightly for the Plough Islands; after the formalities, with Cde Premier Dale Piper handing out the first eleven ceremonial caps and a powerful mass rendition of "Golden Age" that nearly stripped the paint off the pavilion columns, Graeme Holt (68) and Davy (89) performed more akin to a pair playing their fiftieth Test than their first, both playing fluently on familiar pitches and adding 121 for the first wicket before Holt was trapped by Zoran Kendall. The Lisandrans had struggled to adapt to the conditions in Sutton, with only spinner Idário Florian (2-42) managing a decent economy rate and all their fast bowlers being hit for over 50 runs, and the opening stand was followed by good contributions from Leggett (55 off 59 balls), Whittall (42), and nightwatchman Ilya Lebed (20) taking the Plough Islands to 324 all out by lunch on day two.

In reply, Lisander were stubborn and not without resistance but came up against an inspired Baxter; the Swift paceman removed opener Ali Farnell and Saulo D'Amisso in his first two overs, the latter being drawn by a deceptively quick 'slower' ball into a pinch-perfect stumping by Lebed, and it was left to Farnell's partner Liam Keenan (40) and captain Hery (55) to lead the fightback, but tight bowling by Salisbury and Whittall limited the scoring before Baxter returned early on day three to finish off the tail enders. The Foxes had a first-innings lead of 129, and Baxter finished with personal figures of 5-35.

Lisander had learned from their mistakes and set more attacking fields for the second innings, with Florian (4-48) and Kendall (2-22) the main beneficiaries as the pitch began to wear down. The hosts were reduced to 60-3 early on, but Holt (48) and Whittall (36) starred again and Laing put in a captain's innings of 69 to boost the final total to 220, setting the Lisandrans 349 in one and a half days to win, but the settling mist cut day four short. When play resumed this morning, conditions were tricky for both batter and bowler, and once Hery and Sclia stabilised the innings a draw seemed the only likely outcome.

The result was, on the balance of probabilities, a fair one, the Plough Islands having spent most of the game on top but ultimately denied by a superb stand and, to a lesser extent, the elements. There was a strong sense, though, that the match had been a moral victory for the Foxes and their supporters - and the capacity crowd in December Park and around radios across the islands - as the team have proven they can more than compete at the highest level of world cricket. The fact that a draw was met with mild disappointment shows how much expectations have been exceeded, and Laing's team can draw strength from that as the action shifts to the Foxdale Sports Club in a few days' time.

Most of my push to play cricket came from primary school, they thought they saw something in me during lessons and I spent a lot of time in after school training and gradually got into the sport.
"I did not come to it out of an innate love for cricket, but a love was inspired in me by playing and trying to be better - I spent a lot of time watching tapes of old international matches and the 1992 Wappenland Championship final with Andrew Kulayev taking 7 for 21 was my favourite. I wanted to be a fast bowler like him, but I was limited to a shorter runup, not like him sprinting the length of the field, so that was how I got started with swing.
"To tell the truth, I did not realise until I began playing on the other islands just how unsuited Highrock and New Dalmatian pitches were for pace bowling, but I think that worked to my advantage because anything I could get at home would be magnified when I went and tried on a flatter pitch. At one point the coaches at New Dalmatia started calling me Passepartout because I got so much better when I travelled - well, either that or I was too wrapped up in my French lessons at times!
"I always focused on school as the main thing in my life and I suppose in my head I never took cricket seriously, despite the time and effort I spent on it, until I was at university and I realised I missed playing and perhaps it was a larger part of my life than I thought. I do try to have a life beyond the sport, it is what I have dedicated myself to now but I will need to do something when I am older and cannot give my physical best to it any more.
"Having said that, I do not believe in limiting yourself to one thing in life; it is possible to be as much or as little as you want to be, and you miss out on so much if you refuse the opportunities you have - I nearly missed out on the wonderful family I have found through cricket, for example. Now that things have turned out the way they have, I would not change a thing."

Darmeni bowlers dominate opponents, series to be decided in final match

Image
The Darmeni team celebrates following the fall of the final wicket
IZOLA - Normand Seeger took five wickets in Mattijana's first innings and another four wickets in their second innings as Darmen eased past its opponent to victory by an innings and 89 runs. Seeger, along with Darmen's other bowlers, made quick work of the Mattijanan batsmen, bowling them out twice in the space of 78 and a half overs.

Darmeni batsmen took their time to score 385 runs, the opening innings lasting the entirety of the first two days of the match. Theudofrid Milligan scored 147 of the 385 runs, spending a total of five hours on the first day and an hour on the second in the middle. Milligan's patience emanated to the rest of the team, frustrating the Mattijanan bowlers and giving Darmen a solid lead to defend heading into day three.

Eliminating Mattijanan openers Radoslavjević and Elana within the first four overs, the Darmeni bowling attack made the match feel more like a one-day affair than a full test match, knocking off batsman after batsman before any of them could put together a solid innings. Fredi Glukspiel was Mattijana's high scorer, scoring only 39 runs off 32 balls. Trailing by 220 runs after their first innings, Darmeni captain Gwynn Milford decided to enforce the follow-on, and his bowlers answered the call, producing an even more impressive bowling performance in Mattijana's second innings. Scoring only 131 runs in 37.3 overs, Mattijana found themselves still short 89 runs, and the recipients of their first loss of the series.

The Series is now tied at 1-1 as it heads to the Stadijo Kolmetzov in Petrovijanka. Darmen's bowlers will be highly confident heading into the deciding match, while Darmen's batsmen will be looking to prove that Darmen is not a one sided team.

I've never seen a test match look this much like two One Day Internationals played on two consecutive days. Whereas the rest of the multiverse recorded 100+ over innings, and Darmen's first innings to open their match in Mattijana took 204 overs to play (!), the entire second Tobiasia in Ko-oren match took just under 209 overs to complete. The Darmeni first - and only - innings in their match took almost as long to complete as the entire second ever test match for the Green and Blue. The result was much sweeter than the match itself, if you only look at the basic numbers: in the end, the Green and Blue won by just 29 runs.

The match was played in Willowbourne, not exactly known to be a ground that favours bowlers this much. In fact, the third match will be played in Maynard which is a much slower ground, which means we might see four innings completed in a single day, if this week's pace continues.

For this match, Ko-oren went all out for the first time, and not in the good way. In both innings, ten wickets were lost, so the team went all out for something twice. Simultaneously, both teams sought a high runs per over rate, with Ko-oren's first over four RPO, Tobiasia almost hitting four (3,8) in their first, then Ko-oren hitting a clean four RPO in their second, and lastly 3,28 for Tobiasia's last innings, with the lowest RPO out of all innings this match. In that sense, both teams went all out in attack. Simply said, it didn't go too well, and in terms of pacing, the match felt like two (low scoring) ODIs. Then again, this will be the last opportunity for either team to go for an aggressive stance, as Maynard will not allow batsmen to look for boundaries that easily. The high risk batting did not pay off at all for either team, the weather was well read by the bowlers, and wickets fell early and often. For those who like edges, there were plenty of those with five Ko-orenite batsmen falling to them in the first innings only. Bowlers on both sides managed to draw out the batsmen further and further until they were reaching for balls that they should not be hitting, with slips making plenty of catches as a result. The top and middle order could not establish a partnership worth more than 30 runs, and Treadway and Marsden had an exceptionally terrible stand in the middle, before leading into the bowlers. Meredith and Black together held for 27 runs, a lucky break near the end of the innings. Marsden even recorded Ko-oren's first duck.

The openers were decent on Willowbourne's pitch. Stanway hit a bit of a slump, faced a bowling trio hellbent on getting wickets early, and Stanway was not ready to give them. He survived several appeals, batted defensively, but ultimately misjudged a yorker that slipped cleanly underneath the bat to take out off stump. yRheighewn and Baldry were the meat of Ko-oren's batting attack, took the runs per over and the strike rate up with their partnership for 39 runs, but Nihart took his second wicket much like Stanway lost his, then next over edged out to 2nd slip Harra. Treadway and Marsden were awful to lead into the tail end, Treadway was even sent back to the pavilion before Baldry. Marsden's duck, an inside edge to Guyamme who lined up at leg side for this over, was an unlikely and very lucky thing to Tobiasia. The momentum stayed on the Tobiasian side, at least, it looked like the Tobiasian bowlers were unstoppable. That was before anyone found out that every bowler was unstoppable. Meredith and Black stopped the slide a fair bit, making it their point to last as long as possible, and even hit 33 runs together. Eventually they fell to the allrounders. Harvey was run out, a stupid choice to run on a ball like that, which seems to happen once per innings so far. Raycraft survived the onslaught. With 154 runs, it seemed like Tobiasia had this match won already. Revenge for the 10-wicket win in match one was on the cards, if the bowlers could take care of the Ko-orenites this easily, surely the Tobiasian side should amass at least 300 for a comfortable lead?

Harvey then went into a terrible bowling form, giving up the largest share of runs. Raycraft, full of energy after only facing two balls, took four wickets. Black and Marsden had very solid performances, and Treadway added a wicket of his own despite the number of runs he gave up.

The second innings started dramatically. The Green and Blue had no runs after two overs, which is not a problem in the long form of the sport, but yFhireath didn't get out of the way on a Harrison inswinger, then
Stanway could not follow up on a good first innings - again he survived over after over, but failed to add runs, then Blake took his first wicket of the innings. It would be the start to a hard innings, where Blake
was the best cricketer on the field, though the Green and Blue scored a decent number of runs. After a slow start, yRheighewn and Baldry were once again on form to put 95 runs on the scoreboard before either one went out. Blake finally broke the stalemate and bowled yRheighewn, and again Baldry went out soon after. This time, it was the same over that Blake attempted a slog that was just kept in at the boundary by Uzeke. Treadway and Marsden, and this time the bowler was luckier with his bat, then tried to prolong the innings as long as possible. Marsden went out, Meredith faced 12 straight balls and went out after 17 in total, then Black came on, and almost single-handedly saved the innings through miracle batsmenship. First he partnered up with Treadway, while Black was eating up a lot of overs where troublesome spin bowlers were bowling. Then, at the end, Black even shielded Raycraft and Harvey for a while, then Raycraft went out on the first ball he faced. Harvey was alright to make Black the targeted batsman as much as possible, but he was ultimately the last victim to Blake's incredible bowling. It is hard to pinpoint the strongest player of the first innings: Blake, taking five wickets, or Black, scoring 53 runs on 75 balls despite being 8th in the order?

Black continued the great form into the second Tobiasian innings by taking three wickets, giving up 30 runs on just 12 overs. Marsden was more up-and-down, giving up 44 runs though also taking three wickets.

All in all, the Ko-orenites finished the second ever test match brilliantly with a win, many stories to tell, some individual heroics as batsmen and bowlers, all in a match the length of two ODIs.

Up next is the final of three test matches hosting Tobiasia, after which players will focus on the domestic competitions before heading over to Darmen for two matches halfway through the Test season. Already this series is a great success, or rather, the entire season is already a resounding victory. Green and Blue mixed with the pristine white of Test cricket, and great results to boot.
