The Federal Republic of Gergary

Introduction

Gergary (alternate name: Deutschmagyarland) is an island-nation located in northern Esportiva. It is located south of Brenecia, west of Buyan, and east of Soltsteed. The capital city of Ingbert-Borbely is landlocked, and is the seat of government in the country. The nation is not known to be strong economically, however, they can be proud that they can produce their own goods and services, and rarely imports products from other countries. People living in Gergary are called Deutsch-magyar locally, or Gergarian abroad.

The nation is divided into three main regions. The western to south-western part of the region is called Strasseregion, mostly inhabited by Deutsch people. The most famous city in this region is Steinigestrasse, known for its tennis clubs, one for hardcourt and one for grass. This is also where the national football stadium is located. The second region, which encompasses the north to north-east of the nation, is the Nagy region, mostly inhabited by Magyar people. The famous city here is Pas, known by its strong indoor sports teams of ice hockey, volleyball, and basketball. Here you can locate the national arena used for all three indoor sports - the Gergary nemzeti arena. The last region is the Gemischtvegyes region, which consists of 55 percent Deutsch and 45 percent Magyar. This includes Ingbert-Borbely and the mostly known cities of Balogs, Szekely, and Wiesenblume. This region occupies the eastern to south-eastern part of the nation.

The national sport of Gergary is ice hockey, but the government, led by Chancellor Domonkos Virag, allots equal budgets to all their sports via the Deutschmagyarland Sportkomisssion (DMLSK). Ever time the Virag government increases their budget, other branches of sports can also benefit from the increase. The result? A nation which is probably jack of all trades, but mediocre in all of them.

The Steinigestrasse Tennis Club

The largest tennis club in Gergary, the Steinigestrasse Tennis Club, is home to the tennis division of Verein fuer Rasensport (VfR) Steinigestrasse. The club is proud of both its main divisions, the grasscourt team, and the hardcourt team. The club has eight grass courts, eight hard courts, and four enclosed courts, which can be setup both as a hard court or a grass court, depending on the needs of the organizers. For the Steinigestrasse Open, the hard court setup will be used, as this was already designated by the NSTT as a hard court tournament.

The qualifiers will make use of its four enclosed courts and four of its eight other courts, which the latter will have bleachers for the viewing needs of the spectators. The tournament proper, including the doubles, will make use only the four enclosed courts simultaneously. The largest of which, with capacity of 3,500 seated spectators, will host the semifinals and finals of the tournament.

There are also function rooms and transient houses near the courts that the participants can use, which all of those are air-conditioned and well-furnished for the comfort and convenience of the participants.

Transportation and Lodging

From the Ingbert-Borbely International Airport, buses will fetch the participants per delegation, and will be brought straight to the Club, where they may opt to stay in the transient houses. Other delegations may choose to rent a house or hotel rooms just near the facility. Each delegation will be provided with a shuttle van that can carry 10 to 14 passengers, for the duration of the tournament.

People and Laws

People in Gergary are normally warm towards tourists, and usually help them with directions or places to visit. Law enforcement is strictly imposed, and everyone is regulated to follow the rules. The government is strict with smoking, with only certain areas of the facility allow smoking. Use of recreational drugs is strictly prohibited, and may result to deportation if caught.

With another period of downtime to relax at home from a wildly successful year so far on the tennis courts coming to a close it was time to look forward to traveling to yet another new place. This time being a rather new nation to the tennis world, the Federal Republic of Gergary, to see how the team would perform on the hard surface. Based off of how great everyone managed to do with their first time on the grass and taking of the clay there were some high hopes that getting to the hard surface courts would go better for them this time rather than be a repeat of the two mediocre times they had in the Cenian Open competitions. Rank wise they were looking superb as well, not having to qualify to get into the main event in this competition just like the last few, quickly picking up the points needed to bypass that process at the start of the year. Looking at this competition Euan was sure to note all the fresh faces that were going to be appearing in this new event, seemed like it would be something to really look forward to as something really different. At the time being the team really had nothing to know about what this place would be like compared to any of the other places, though they did hope that the city or town that they would be in would hopefully not be a desert and have some waterfront. If that would not be the case things would not be nearly as fun as it could have been, but everyone always made sure to pack for the worst anyways. The ranking on paper proved to be an interesting case, with the success of Llinos in Britonisea to be able to get into the top ten with Dagmar it ended up knocking Ástríður out of it by two places. So she ended up making the goal to be the one to try to win this competition to get back into it herself, though once it became a plan to happen it would most likely be jinxed. As for the others it was mostly have a good time all around, Alwyn would still give Ceallachán a hard time and Birger along with Hermanni would continue to try to keep up the better luck they had been getting out of the rest of the team. Otherwise it would just be seeing what another nation had to offer tourist to go see and experience, the same old routine that was nearly becoming stale already. Though it was an enjoyable thing to do, and as a saying goes "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." So with that in mind everyone on the team was busy getting packed up and ready to go get new memories and experiences in another new land to explore.
Currently traveling across the United States. Still up for any conversations though.

Number 40 Seed Con Gregory of West Phoencia had been looking forward to attending the Steinigestrasse Open I.

Having been involved in the tennis circuit for the last 6 years, his dreams of winning a major title are still standing. However his dream of attending this open may already be shattered with rumours that he has sprained his wrist and ankle in a fall during practise yesterday.

A distraught Con Gregory was seen limping from the courts with his coach. Where icebags were placed on his Arm and ankle, before he was rushed off to hospital.

The West Phoenician Tennis Federation has neither confirmed nor denied that Mr Gregory will pull out of the tournament, citing that West Phoenician athletes are strong both in body and mind. And nothing will stop them doing what they love, and that includes Con Gregory who has often played with sprained ankles and other aliments.

Fans are being called to travel to the Steinigestrasse Open I. to cheer on their players who have not had the best run of success in the last few years. And hopes that some good uck will start coming to the West Phoenician tennis players.

In Inital Match, Petunia Sisters Falter
Nation's "faces of autism" over pressured?

Reported by sports commentator James Blue. Contains opinions not necessarily endorsed by Apikai News Today or is subsidiaries--James's commentary is his own.

Image

GREGARY--In their first matchup of the Steinigestrasse Open, Lilly and Ashley Petunia suffered a defeat, putting a cap to a disappointing day for Apikaian tennis fans following the tournament. Much like other players from Apikai, the star sisters found themselves vexed at every turn by their opponents.

Now, a lot of people have called me up about this, as if shocked that this could be. "James, how could the Petunias do so bad? They were amazing back home!" Well, it's not surprising to me, because they're not back home. They're in a foregien country on their first international competition. Of course they're going to struggle a bit.

And if I may, the Petunias always struck me as pure "inspiration p*rn." I don't mean that in a belittling way--in fact, quite the opposite. I think the fact that they're autistic and "overcame" it has been way overstated in a way that pressures them. They're not pretty faces you slap on your poster and say "THEY WON THE STEINIGESTRASSE--WHAT's YOUR EXCUSE?" They're not your autistic friend to make you feel like you're inclusive of 'neurodivergence' or whatever the hip term is now. They're people.

And people, even "star tennis sisters" who "overcame autism", lose sometimes.

Bags packed and trip dealt with the Ferret team found themselves in another foreign land, this time to be slightly more pampered with getting a bus to bring them straight to the courts to get them all signed in and ready to go. First thing to get done with was doing the unpacking thing, which this place made sure to go above and beyond to offer free places of stay, having them be called transient houses instead of hotels was something else however. Overall it seemed like staying in the place would be no different than the other places of temporary residence and would do just fine, especially since it was free. Euan made sure to double check that none of the team was playing in the qualifiers, and they still did not have to do that giving them time to sit back and get accustomed to the new environment. They were lucky in the regard that this place was an island nation, so it was surrounded by water to go swimming in during the times they would not be at the courts or doing typical tourist stuff elsewhere during the day. Though when it came time they were always there to watch what other players play in their matches as they could, looking forward to seeing who would make a name for themselves here with all the new faces along with who they would be seeing on the courts themselves. At the end of the day they only found some of them would be playing against new faces, for the rest of them it was the tougher Qads and players from Melbergia trying for their own shot to win on the hard top surface. It had been a while since any of them had played on this type of court, so the order of business for the day was to practice a little to try not and end up like how they did on the Cenian Open. Which was a fun time of remembering their rather forgettable performance there as they each got used to running on the Steinigestrasse Tennis Club courts swinging wildly. It made for an overall fun time before having to go into the actual competition.

The West Phoenician Tennis Federtion was abuzz with fresh joy and excitement. Out of the 4 players who they sent to take part in the Steinigestrasse Open I, 3 still remain.

The first victim was indeed Con Gregory who had reported an injury the day before to his wrist and ankle. But like a true trooper he soldiered on to take on Lukas Nunhead from Britonisea who easily took care of Con, dispatching him with barely a sweat.

West Phoenician Sweetheart Tiffany Love had a much more fulfilling day, taking care of Ellie Fox of Free Republic of Akipai in two sets, which saw both woman slog it out like true professionals. Each not wanting to give the other too much of a lead. With a final result of 7-6,7-5 Tiffany Love has definitely earned her spot in the Round of 32 Matches where she will take on Neia Dovan, a much dominant player from the nation of Ceni.

"Win or lose I am going in with the mindset to have fun and play a sport I love...tennis" Tiffany Love said to media after her post game victory again Ellie Fox

Playboy Jon Swanston who has recently settled down with one of his long term girlfriends , smashed through his qualifier against Christopher Bradley of United States of Yasser. Jon will next take on Kika Dovan of Ceni.

"Ceni plays a terrific game of tennis. It will be a long shoot to beat such a higher ranked player," Jon Swanston said before heading off to greet his partner who was waiving to him on the crowded stadium.

Last but not least Renee Richardson took out Anto Husmi of Nusalia, 6-2,6-1. Renee is eager to get back in the game and start rising in the ranks again after a few bad years that had seen her drop and nearly booted from the West Phoenician tennis circuit due to bad behaviour. In a recent interview she has promised to up her game and try to not cause as much drama as in previous tournaments. She goes into the Round of 32 Matches playing off against Melissa Herbert of New Gelderland, or as she joked to fellow fans, the nation which sounds like your choking on a Mentos.

West Phoenicia wishes the three players the best of luck in there next matches.

All settled down and ready to go all that there was to do was wait until the first round of the main competition, and on that morning the team got their breakfast and headed off to the courts. First to go up and have to play was Ceallachán playing against the host nation’s own Orsolya on their turf which would make for a harder match. Ceallachán had to start off slow warming up to now playing on the hard surface which cost him some early games and despite managing to almost catch up was just unable to win that first set. Put into a tight spot and not wanting to start things off like this he put extra effort into the second set, coming away taking every single game in that set to make up for the rather poor start. Bringing things into a third set where of course neither side wanted to lose they both went at it, quickly going back and forth before the Ferret got the lead to win the final set and thus the match. Starting the day off on a good note he would have to go up against a New Gelderland player tomorrow where things were sure to ramp up in difficulty. After that the team got to have a down time period of just watching some other matches as the other three on the singles side were placed in the later end of the event, meaning that if they won there they would quickly have to face each other. Time seemed to pass quickly and it was Dagmar’s turn to step onto the court to face off against a new face named Mark, the two quickly got at it once the match started with Dagmar able to quickly take the lead for herself and dominate the court this time around. With that she repeated the process in the second set to quickly take the match for herself, feeling kind of bad that it had to go this way sometimes on the court she left it as that.

Alwyn was up against the more familiar Melbergian player Peter for his first match, the two managed to start off on even footing to tie the games up as they went on. With neither of them getting a real edge until the final games that mattered the most, not wanting to be the first one to lose Alwyn was able to push through to take the last needed games to win the first set. Going into the second set he was able to get the lead a little quicker so he just had to hold onto it until the end. After managing to accomplish that just like Dagmar he was able to win his match in two sets making the day look better and better as it went on. Ástríður was up against another Melbergian Paula, it seemed to be just one of those odd luck of the draws that it had to end up with it being two matches like this. She was able to get the lead early on in the first set to make things look like a sure thing that she would win just like her teammates had just did themselves. After getting through the second set with most the games in her favor it was a done deal and the team just pulled off a perfect day on the singles side of the event giving them a good reason to celebrate already. Tomorrow Dagmar would also face off against a New Gelderland player just like Ceallachán, with Alwyn and Ástríður having to play against each other. At least with that they would have one of their own going through the round of sixteen already a sure thing.

From there they had some more downtime going into the doubles side of the competition before Birger and Hermanni had to go on and try to continue to shine like they have been doing before. Once it was their time to go up they would have to face another host nation’s players in the pair of Bianka and Ármin. With the first match the two Ferrets quickly got to business taking as many games as they could for themselves as quickly as possible, which ended up working very well for them only losing twice before winning the set. Then going into the second set they were able to do what Ceallachán did in his match and take every single game for themselves to dominate the court and keep complete control of the situation for themselves. Quickly getting through their match and moving on to the quarterfinals to have to face a pair of Cenians. Säde and Llinos were up a sort time later against Qads Måns and Timmy, so far the team had had a perfect day and it was up to this match to see if it would hold and Qads had a way of being a wildcard. The two of them were able to start off solidly taking the games they needed to in order to win their first set before going into a tougher second set. After getting over a hump in the second set however they were able to continue on strong holding the lead for themselves to take the set and win the match right there without getting pushed into a third. Their reward would be having to go up against the other Cenian pair in the event tomorrow. Though for today they had plenty of reason to celebrate as they all managed to win their matches and move on without a single loss, which was for sure going to change in the next round of things.

West Phoenician tennis fans were in shock and awe today after the latest round of the
Steinigestrasse Open I that saw Renee Richardson sail through the round of 16 after coming face to face with Lukas Nunhead of Britonisea and knocking him in out of the competition.

In a cheer for diversity Renee Richardson beat him 6-2,6-0.

"I feel so honored and blessed. For years I have been asking for seperate entries for men and women thinking its unfair to have men compete against women, it gives them an unfair advantage with their upper body strength. I still think it needs to be separated by gender, but its so amazing to comes this far knocking out men in the process."

"I feel this is the first step in a better way forward for my tennis career. I replaced my old coach who was not doing the best for my career. i was going backwards not forwards. My sister Fi still uses the same coach and if it works for her that is okay. But I am so glad for Roderick Nickovic who helped coach some of my team mates before the last Olympics and we were able to pull in a gold and 2 bronze. We really hope to see the same magic on the international tennis circuit. "

In recent years television ratings on the West Phoenician Sport channels have seen a sharp decline during the tennis fans with most people who are not tennis obsessed tuning out. With the new drive from a number of players ratings have started to climb again.

After the first day was over it was finally time to go out and do some tourist stuff and have some fun, at the top of the list was to go enjoy the beach and the water before the sun went down on the day. Luckily this place had plenty to offer in the way of shoreline to enjoy and swim along to waste some time away. Alwyn and Ástríður discussed which one of them wanted to be the ones to win, they both kind of did for different reasons in this competition, with Ástríður wanting to keep up a high rank that the team was really starting to get to enjoy just this year while Alwyn pointed out that he was the only one so far to have not won an event so far on either the singles or doubles side. In the end it was the curiosity of letting the lower ranked team member have the win which would benefit them won out. And with that it would be up to Ceallachán and Dagmar to overcome some tough competition to get to move onto the quarterfinals. When the sun started to set they figured that would be the best time to head of to get to where they were staying to clean up and get some rest before tomorrow’s set of matches. Waking up ready to go and see what this day would end up doing to them all.

Starting of with Ceallachán against New Gelderland player Jill he once again had a slow start in the first set, unable to catch up in the later games to just lose the whole thing. Going into the second set however he was able to pick things up, keeping the score tied to the best of his ability which worked in his favor. Keeping it up all the way until the tie breaking game did not go in his favor and he ended up losing the set and thus the match without getting to push things out to the third set that he would have needed to win. Alwyn got to laugh about how he was still the overall unlucky one of the group being the first one out and that was that for that. Dagmar was up next for the group going up against another New Gelderland player Noah, the two would end up going at it against each other pretty hard. With the first set seeing quick games and a score racking up on both sides with either one of them looking for the quick win the hard courts seemed to give. It was surprisingly Dagmar that was able to stay on top of getting across the court to keep on top of the games in the first set to win it. Going into the second set the tables would be turned and things would seem to play out just like in the first set just reserved for the sides, seeing Dagmar lose and bringing things to a third set. There it would seem things would quiet down a little though the two would keep at each other, with the Ferret managing to regain the lead needed to win the match. Her reward would be to have to go up against the Cenian Neia, one of the more well known faces on the court.

Bringing the now fifty fifty day they had down to Alwyn and Ástríður playing against each other where only one of them would end up winning. Between the two of them they already knew who was going to get to move on though these always were good practice matches for the team. Alwyn was the one to go in hard for an early lead and quickly took many games practicing working on the serve with this kind of court, their small stature helping keep the ball arc rather low. From there after winning the first set it was Ástríður’s turn to do the same thing, which saw her take most the games in that set for herself. Leading to a final third set where they played a little more normally against each other, though Alwyn took the lead for himself to go on and win the match. He would then get to go on to face off against Briton Kyle in the quarterfianls. He joked with Dagmar about seeing her in the semifinals projecting his normal overconfident self, which if that ended up being the case it would mean that the team had one of their own in the final match for sure, which Alwyn saw himself in this time.

Though the day was not yet over and it was time to go into the doubles side of the competition, with Birger and Hermanni being the first up there ready to go out there and win. Facing off against Cenians Val and Jac the two Ferrets would have a great start taking many of the games for themselves, with the two going in for another quick win. Things would not end up working out like that however as their competition was able to rise up and outdo them about midway through the second set where things went downhill for the two Ferrets from there. Going into the third set saw things pick up overall with games going back and forth, however the Cenians were able to stay on top winning the two games they needed to at the end in order to win, and knocking them out of the event. Säde and Llinos were going up against the other Cenian pair Coosal and Gyrachor, where they would have a rough time to get through. Going through the first set barely holding onto a lead but in the end it was all they needed to get the win, then going into the second set to try and repeat the process. And unlike their fellow teammates things would not end up going bad for them here, with the two of them able to keep pushing through until they won the set. Ending things there with them winning the match in two sets, their reward would be to face the Cenian pair that Hermanni and Birger had just lost to, already setting up how difficult of a match it was to be for the semifinal.

With it all over half the team was out of the event, which seemed rather normal and was nothing to fuss over, as given where they were at in the competition they were doing rather great as a team. Matching only the Britons with how many of them were still left in the whole thing. Seemed like just as it started things were already coming to a close and the team barely felt like they got to see anything yet.

The end of the second day was spent mostly being out and about sightseeing the city and what it had to offer, from local cuisine to the stores. Spending all the free time they had back to being tourist before they had to flip back to being professional athletes. It was not much but it was an enjoyable way to pass the time since the place was not a burning hot land like other places were. They would eventually go back to where they were staying to watch the local media and see what that was like before getting ready for tomorrow. And once that came it was time to head off and get into the end part of the competition to see how they would fare there. Since it was not the semifinals yet on the singles side of the event it would end up splitting the team as two of their own would have to play at the same time which was getting kind of normal. Dagmar was up against Cenian Neia preparing for the worst to come with this match, starting off cautiously looking to see how things would go before messing things up. It would end up later turning in her favor with her getting more and more games to put her in the lead to take the first set. Going into the second set she was able to pick things up quickly to take the lead and surprisingly keep control over the court to win again and take the match.

Meanwhile Alwyn was facing off against Briton Kyle in what would be a way longer match, starting off quick things were not in the Ferret’s favor with his competition holding the lead. Going into the second set it was up to him to win here to drag things out or lose once and for all to not win an event again. Things would not slow down and Alwyn had to up his effort in order to try and win. Pushing games out to try and achieve that goal to the point where a tie breaking game was needed to settle things, one which he was able to get to make it all worth it. Going into the third set the ante was only upped as neither side backed down, repeating the second set all over again. Only this time instead of getting another tie breaking match they had to keep going over and over again until one of them got ahead the two games needed to win. Which ended up taking enough time that Dagmar and the rest of the team was able to join up to watch the end of the match, where Alwyn was finally able to get the two games needed to win moving himself like Dagmar onto the semifinals. Tomorrow the two of them would get to play against each other and with that one of the team was guaranteed to be in the final match either against New Gelderland Jill or Briton Leo.

On the doubles side Säde and Llinos were already in the semifinals facing off against Val and Jac to see if they come overcome this challenge where Birger and Hermanni had goofed up at. Going into things the two Ferrets were quickly able to take the first set for themselves, only losing one game at the end of it all in a similar story to when their teammates did this. They were prepared for their competition to up the effort in the second set and instead of being caught off guard they were ready. Dragging things out and keeping the score tied up it was not until near the end that they were able to break through the stalemate that was building up to win the second set. And with that the two of them won their match and got to go onto the finals to face Britons Jaguar and Zeke. With the day over the team now could celebrate having one of their own in both the singles final and doubles final each with the shot to win in this event. With Hermanni and Birger joking about how Llinos and Säde were working hard to get up there in ranking alongside them.

Fourth day into the official competition and the doubles finals were already happening, on day five the singles finals would happen and then the team’s time in the nation of Gergary would come to a close with just a little over a week spent having fun there. Getting up and getting through breakfast all their eyes would be on seeing who would make it into the finals also side one of them to go for the tournament win. After quite a few interesting games and sets later the first match of the day was over and it was Leo to be the one to get into the finals, whether he won or not this event had already most likely boosted his place on the official ranks up another place or two. Before their game Dagmar and Alwyn had a quick talk over which one of them should go through to the finals, with Ástríður having already given up her spot to let him get through he was eager to get into the finals for his second shot at getting a finals win. Though Dagmar had to point out that she had faced Leo before and knew what to expect, while Alwyn tried to counter that Ceallachán was able to win against him as well and that he had a shot Dagmar was more steadfast in her position. Either way overall both of them were doing great and this event would not make or break either one of them but those extra points on paper always seemed to help. In the short time they had it was mostly agreed that Dagmar would end up being the one to get through to help further cement her place in the top eight and Alwyn would get a favor later on down the road. On the court however the two of them were a little bit more competitive with Alwyn getting a solid lead in the first set taking advantage of Dagmar’s slower start. Working on her serves Dagmar ended up losing the first set but came back hard on her teammate racking up the score for herself, guaranteeing the match would have to go out to a third set for her to win. The final set is where Alwyn started to back down allowing Dagmar to quickly take the win and end the match, making it so she would be the one to go on and face the Briton in the final match of the event.

With that joyful news out of the way it was time to go onto the last doubles match of the event with Llinos and Säde facing off against Briton pair Jaguar and Zeke. Unlike the last match yesterday the two Ferrets had to go back to working hard to take games in this first set, though in the end it had paid off with them taking a lead near the end of it. With the start going in their favor they had the chance to end things in the second set, which would end up not going in their favor. After some games where things started to go south the competition was able to swoop in to win the second set and drag out the match, now in either of their ballpark to win. And it would be the two Ferrets to bite back hard, quickly taking a few games for themselves and by the end of the set not allowing the Britons to take any more games for themselves wrapping the match up solidly for Säde and Llinos. That was the end of it, with the two of them now getting their second win together from the grass courts of Britonisea to the hardtop courts of Gergary now. Birger and Hermanni continued to joke about how well they were doing off the clay compared to the rest of them overall. Things were now up to Dagmar to see if the team could take the Steinigestrasse Open or just half of it like they did for pretty much all of the clay events this year.

The final day had the whole team’s attention on Dagmar to see if she would be able to beat Briton Leo in a round two match, this time being on the hardtop surface instead of the clay. With Säde and Llinos having already won on the doubles side the team overall was still looking better than ever this year, with only Alwyn still being the one looking for his own tournament win. All of them ended up having a fun night the day before the final match of the event celebrating the doubles side victory at whatever local establishments would cater to them. Trying to make for a fun end to their short time here before they had to head off on their next adventure with their luck still hopefully in tow. Going well into the night as they possibly could they all still managed to rise when the sun did to get ready for the day, Dagmar going through some extra preparations to keep in tip top position. With a hearty breakfast it all came down to this one last match in this event.

Going into the match Dagmar was still ready and able to give it her all and that is what she did, starting off gaining the lead over her competition in the first set to try and go for a quick win. It ended up going more in her favor than last time she and Leo went at it, by the end of the first set he had only gotten three games for himself instead of four and Dagmar was still the one to win. Going into the second set the Ferret looked to keep things up not wanting to let the match get dragged out to a third set and thus kept up the pressure. By the end of the second set she was looking just as good as she did in the first set, winning the match just like that. Bringing this event her third singles tournament win and second one against the Briton. Though he would be the one to benefit from how far he had come than she would ranking wise. The win was a win however and it was something to never be put down and always celebrated. After the match was over the team had one last outing in the city before they would have to pack things up and move on.
