OOC: Preview: Part II. Continued from this post.

SPONY LUQ TELEVISION

Of course, Qusmo will have the chance to bounce back against its next opponent: Vartugia. The nation is ranked last among all in Pot 11. They likely represent the only truly easy win that Qusmo has on its qualifying schedule. Their tactics are disjoined, their play is choppy, & all the players swarm around the ball like a pack of seven-year-olds. The team is so disorganized & undisciplined that it could very well be managed by a goat - &, in fact, the team is actually managed by A Goat. They were the only team from all forty-four which participated in Baptism of Fire 69 to neither win nor even draw any of their six matches - & there’s a good reason why. There’s nothing complicated about this: Qusmo needs to win both of their matches against Vartugia, & they ought to win by large margins; otherwise, the Qusmi’y are in trouble.

Next on the schedule for Qusmo will be Velestria. Many Qusmi’y know little of Velestria aside from the recent news that Qusma manager Vralx-Ucyxi Lec has left KF Poldanz, somewhat surprisingly after winning three Puky Zala in three years in Polan, for Velish club Old Birmingham City. Some might also know Velestria as the home of Diamond Gregory, KF Poldanz’s new N$3 million goalkeeper, who is one of five foreign-based players on the Velish twenty-three-player roster. However, as Poldanz fans might know, that isn’t the end of the Qusma-Velish connection. In fact, in Qusmo’s first Tour of the Multiverse, Velestria’s predecessor state was on the schedule: Razenthuria.

The turbulent nation has changed identities yet again, as powerful forces within the nation do battle in a culture war that surpasses the likes of what most of the rest of the Multiverse could imagine. Elsewhere, people squabble over small aspects of culture; in Velestria, it is possible to overhaul it entirely. Still, that complete overhaul has not necessarily extended to the country’s national team - & there is some history to analyze there. At Momoa, in the city then known at Tynedale, Xilit-Zaxac Yol was able to score a brace, but Qusmo still fell three-two.

That result could be interpreted as boding poorly for Qusmo today, despite its age. Velestria is a very defensively minded team, & Qusmo’s offense has been well-documented as just not quite seeming to have enough firepower to sustain it in international competition. Qusmo could struggle to break Velestria open. Further, if Velestria could score three over Qusmo, it seems as if though the home supporters at Mastad Tracama could be in for a long day. Christopher Tajo Mendez, the Devontan in charge of Velestria, might be able to finally enjoy success on the national team after having a tough stretch domestically that has put them on the hot seat.

However, that’s not entirely reflective of the state of the two sides now. Qusmo has gotten much better since that day, especially in the back; Velestria would be much more hard pressed to score three times again. Further, just a quick look at Qusmo’s team sheet should show that this was not a full strength side. Of the eleven on the pitch that day, just Xilit-Zaxac is in what is projected to be Avarn-Oxolt’s Starting XI, & only four made it to this cycle’s first half twenty-five-player roster. In fact, five of them were not even invited to the fifty-player national team training camp. The fact is that Qusmo has improved immensely, & its personnel will be of a much higher quality in Tracam & Southampshire. Qusmo has already proven that it can score a brace on the Velish with a reduced-quality side on the road; with a full-strength squad & a vastly improved defense, it should be able to put Velestria away twice.

Fuzpon Qusma has been rumoured to be trying to work out a deal with the World Cup Committee to play Velestria away on Matchday Six & in Tracam on Matchday Fifteen, instead of the other way around, or to play their next opponents away on Matchday Sixteen & in Qanz on Matchday Seven. Granted, it is only speculation, & we lack any proof that this actually happened or is happening, but it would at least make sense; after Velestria, Qusmo takes on fellow Esportivan nation Mattijana, though Fuzpon Qusma would not get to play their two away matches in Esportiva back-to-back as the schedule is arranged now. It wouldn’t take much to allow Qusma players to not have to travel as long or as hard before their away fixture in Mattijana; the World Cup Committee would merely have to reverse the dates of the fixtures.

This might seem silly, but perhaps Fuzpon Qusma ought to pursue every small advantage they can get against Mattijana, because Qusmo just doesn’t have a very good record in Esportiva. Qusmo has played Esportivan opponents twelve times so far; they have won three matches, drawn three matches, & lost six. Further, all three wins came in World Cup 80 Qualifying, with two against Wolves Clans - which, with seven points from eighteen matches, was the only team out of all hundred fifty which entered World Cup 80 Qualifying which did not earn at least ten points over the course of qualifying. Qusmo is currently skidding on a seven-match winless streak to Esportivan opponents, which includes that loss to Razenthuria, as well as a one-nil loss to Filindostan in Qusmo’s latest Tour of the Multiverse to prepare for this set of qualifiers.

Most painfully for Qusma fans to remember, however, is Qusmo’s experience with Polkopia; the two hundred twenty-third-ranked side in the Multiverse sent Qusmo tumbling down to fifth on Matchday Nine, when a win would have vaulted them into a tie for the group lead on points, which would have seen Qusmo in second on a head-to-head tiebreaker. Qusmo simply could not recover from that; had Qusmo won on Matchday Nine, they would have earned a spot in the World Cup 81 Qualifying Playoff, but Qusmo fell four points flat as it was. That is Qusmo’s most recent experience with an Esportivan team in a competitive fixture, & it ended poorly.

The gap for Qusmo is even larger when the team isn’t just playing Esportivans, but is actually playing in Esportiva. Qusmo actually has a decent record hosting teams from Esportiva, with two wins & two draws, including a famous one-nil win over then-twenty-fourth-ranked Tumbra at Mastad Qusma in World Cup 80 Qualifying, which was by far Qusmo’s most signature victory at the time. However, when actually playing in Esportiva, Qusmo has had just one win - against Wolves Clans, one hundred fiftieth of one hundred fifty teams in World Cup 80 Qualifying - along with one draw - against Damukuni in a friendly - & six losses. Perhaps it really is the travel, but Qusmo simply struggles whenever it has to play in Esportiva.

This is no ordinary Esportivan team, either. It is astonishing that they are only barely inside the top sixty-four in the Multiverse. Just look at the havoc they’ve wrought on Esportiva. In Campionato Esportiva 20, they won bronze. In Campionato Esportiva 21, they made the podium again. In Campionato Esportiva 22, they reached the final. & in the latest edition of their regional championship - Campionato Esportiva 23 - they emerged as champions, over current fifth-ranked Brenecia. They’ve more than due for a visit to the World Cup, & reports from the Mattijanan camp suggest that the team is playing with renewed belief & optimism as a result of proving their potential with a regional trophy. If Qusmo can shut down the high-flying Mattijanan attack, they might be able to nick a draw in Qanz; however, the ability of their adversaries, combined with a mighty Mattijanan mindset & a tough travel itinerary, means that they likely won’t be able to pick up points in Petrovijanka.

After visiting Esportiva, Qusmo will get to visit another famous region in the form of Atlantian Oceania, as they take on a team from Alluersia. It’s no surprise that Qusmo has history with the region - as does virtually every team to enter any World Cup Qualifying campaign in recent decades. What might be a bit more surprising is that Qusmo has played teams from Atlantian Oceania more than those from any other region in the Multiverse - including its own. Despite eight Copa Rushmori matches, played exclusively against Rushmori opponents, Qusmo has only played Rushmori opponents fourteen times, compared to twenty matches against teams from AO. Looking at Qusmo’s record against the storied region, it doesn’t look particularly eye-popping. Qusmo has only won four of their matches, alongside eight draws, & have lost eight times. However, things look more encouraging with a peer behind the numbers - revealing, of course, yet more numbers.

Simply put, Qusmo has consistently run against very tough opposition whenever they have played teams from Atlantian Oceania; they have never played an opponent from the region ranked lower than eighty-seventh - Krytenia, in the group stage of Cup of Harmony 73. When Qusmo has played a team from Atlantian Oceania in the past, its average rank has been forty-fourth. That’s a far cry from Alluersia, ranked just two hundred fiftieth. Things also look much better the more recent your statistics are. In fact, Qusmo is on a four-match unbeaten run against teams from AO, & has only lost one of its past seven against teams from the region. Adjusting for both opposition quality & recency produce a much smaller sample size, but much more encouraging results for Qusmi’y: of the two times Qusmo has played a team from Atlantian Oceania from outside the top thirty-two in a competitive fixture since Cup of Harmony 72, Qusmo has won both matches, earning a three-one win over then-sixty-sixth-ranked South Toronto in the group stage of Cup of Harmony 72 & a one-nil win over then-eighty-seventh-ranked Krytenia in the group stage of Cup of Harmony 73.

However, this is no ordinary team from Atlantian Oceania that Qusmo will be facing. Like Kavagrad, Alluersia is in a moment of political crisis; in fact, it represents the most pressing political emergency of all the teams in the group. Alluersia has long been a semi-autonomous province of West Guiana, but leadership in the country has just declared independence. Self-proclaimed president Adam Haggard has maintained that the declaration is on entirely legal grounds, but that will by no means guarantee a peaceful transition. There is a long history of tension & of violence between Alluersia & West Guiana, & it threatens to flare up again.

Alluersia has claimed that it had to declare independence due to oppression from West Guiana, but West Guiana claims that it had to clamp down on Alluersia because of a state-sponsored genocide against ethnic Guianans. There have also been recent clashes near the border, most prominently committed by Alluersian separatists. The government of West Guiana has claimed that, through this violence & their declaration of independence, Alluersia has declared war against West Guiana - & it seems as though West Guiana is readying itself to attempt to suppress the insurrection.

Most immediately pressing for Qusmo is the fact that West Guiana has threatened to impose a blockade on Alluersia if it does not renounce its independence, an ultimatum which seems astronomically unlikely to actually be accepted. This creates a logistical nightmare for Fuzpon Qusma, as they will have to find some way to get their players, coaches, trainers, & staff into Alluersia on Matchday Eight, lest they risk a forfeit that they simply cannot afford. Further, they will have to find a way to do so safely - & it seems as though that could be extremely difficult. That could impact travel, training, & results - both for Alluersia’s team & their opponents.

It also imposes a political headache for Qusmo’s own government, & that of all Alluersia’s Group 11 opponents, as they will be expected to weigh in on whether it deserves independence & ought to be internationally recognized as a state. This is one of the key reasons Alluersia’s government wanted to submit a national team to the Baptism of Fire & World Cup Qualifying, really; it exposes governments across the Multiverse to the Alluersian cause & has the potential to gain support for it across the Multiverse. In the grand scheme of things, whether Alluersia wins or loses is a matter far from the pitch. Still, Fuzpon Qusma will be focussed on whether it can pick up six points - &, if it can navigate a hopefully metaphorical minefield, it should be able to do just that.

Finally, Qusmo will close out its World Cup 82 Qualifying campaign with one of the most important matches of all the eighteen to be played. Qusmo is a Pot 3 team, but there are only two spots for Group 11 teams to be had in the World Cup. The World Cup Committee clearly has a love of drama, for they paired Qusmo with Pot 11’s Pot 2 team, & the team that Qusmo most likely has to beat in order to qualify for its first World Cup, on the very last matchday of qualifying, in an away match. That match will be played against, & in, Saltstead.

Qusma viewers might feel like Saltstead is vaguely familiar, but they might not quite be able to place from where they know the name. This might help: Soltsteed. Like Mytanija & Velestria, Saltstead has also had a recent change of name, but they’re very much the same place. &, like Razenthuria, Qusmo has history with Soltsteed. In Cup of Harmony 72, Qusmo played out a scoreless draw with Soltsteed in the Round of Sixteen; after neither side could score after two hours, the match went to penalty kicks, & Soltsteed advanced on a four-two margin. The fact that that match was technically a draw allows Qusmo to boast that it went unbeaten in its first nine matches in the Cup of Harmony, with seven wins & two draws. &, if the same result were to play out on Matchday Nine or Matchday Eighteen, the match would stop at ninety minutes & be declared a draw.

However, psychologically, the match feels like a loss to many Qusmi’y. After all, that is how Qusmo was bounced from the tournament. That could weigh on Qusmo when the team visits Ashwell. Further, the Stallions will be incredibly tough to break down, boasting an excellent defense, a constant press, & a five-player back line that acts like a brick wall. Players like vice captain Ann-Elisabeth Smid & Emmet le Duc will be matchup nightmares for the Qusma offense, with Le Duc particularly well-known for doing anything to secure an advantage for their team, including bending the rules a bit. This team thrives on scoreless draws & one-nil wins. It may not be the toughest test for Qusmo’s back line, but it will be a monumental challenge for Qusmo’s offense to get in gear against an opponent designed to do everything it can to break up their opponent's rhythm & minimize the quantity & quality of their chances.

Most of all, however, the fixtures between these two teams could be the decider for who goes to World Cup 82. These are the second- & third-highest-ranked sides of the group, after all, & the match at King William VII National Park has the potential to have an atmosphere unlike anything Qusmo has ever been a part of. Perhaps the knockout rounds of the Cup of Harmony could be an equivalent, but Saltstead has already proven it can handle Qusmo there. If Qusmo is in a position where it needs a win to qualify, it could be extremely difficult. Qusmo has never before still been in contention on the final matchday, whereas Saltstead has shown the nerve to qualify for a World Cup via the monumental stakes of a playoff just last cycle. Qusmo will need to put itself in a great position to qualify, or even guarantee it with a match in hand, if it wants to advance; Qusmo could draw Saltstead at Mastad Kolla, but we fear that the stakes could be too high on the return leg on the final matchday, & they could lose to this talented Saltsteadish team as a result.

So, where does that bring us? Here are our predictions:

MD Venue Opponent Result Points
1 Visitors Sajnur Win 3
2 Hosts Kavagrad Win 6
3 Visitors Mytanija Loss 6
4 Hosts Cosumar Loss 6
5 Visitors Vartugia Win 9
6 Hosts Velestria Win 12
7 Visitors Mattijana Loss 12
8 Visitors Alluersia Win 15
9 Hosts Saltstead Draw 16
10 Hosts Sajnur Win 19
11 Visitors Kavagrad Win 22
12 Hosts Mytanija Loss 22
13 Visitors Cosumar Loss 22
14 Hosts Vartugia Win 25
15 Visitors Velestria Win 28
16 Hosts Mattijana Draw 29
17 Hosts Alluersia Win 32
18 Visitors Saltstead Loss 32

We predict that Qusmo should be able to earn thirty-two points - but we’re doubtful on the Qusmi’y earning more. We don’t doubt that Qusmo is a good team, but so is virtually every other one in the group, which has been reported by Mytanar outfit Gazeta Sporta to be - contrary to Mattijanan publication MFO Sport - the most difficult of all fifteen qualifying groups this cycle. That might depress the point totals of all the top teams, but thirty-two points is simply not enough for Qusmo to advance to a World Cup. Qusmo will either need to overperform expectations or back its bags for another Cup of Harmony.

A Blog

The CURS is BROKEN

DID YOU MIS ME?

Sorry for not being able to tell the TRUTH to the MASSES lately. Ive been trying this really great thing where you lose wate. Its called “not eating or drinking.” Apparently its supposed to work, but Im pretty hungry, so I have some cocoabo every five minutes or so. Its not working for me, though; must be some fad diet. So Ive decided to go on the MercDonalds diet instead; I hear its really amazing.

So sorry everyne, I know that AT LEAST FOUR people read this regularly & who were probably counting on me to post so shout out to Tla Tla Nev & Tla. & me. I also read this blog. So that means FIVE people read this blog regularly. Well, I guess that technically counts as “at least for.” Yeah so Im right about that.

& Ive also been gone because for the past few months, Ive been BASKING in GORY. & let me tell you its wonderful. I have been saying for LITERALLY CENTURIES (give or take whatever) that we need NEW KITS because our old ones are CURSED. We did SO WELL in the last Cup of Harmony in our BEAUTIFUL RED & GOLD KITS. But AS SOON AS WE WEAR WHITE we lose. THE ONLY MATCH WHERE WE WORE WHITE WE LOST. EVERY OTHER MATCH WE WORE RED & EVRY OTHER MATCH WE WON.

Just look at where we were before. In our first set of white kits, we lost FIVE TIMES drew THREE TIMES & won just TWO TIMES - & those two were to Omerica, which we all know don’t count, so it was really FIVE LOSSES THREE DRAWS & ZERO WINS IN REAL MATCHES. NO WONDER QUSMO LOST IN THAT CUP OF HARMONY MATCH. THEY WERE CURSED> OTHERWiSE WE WOULD WIN EVERYHING

Clearly something must be done, as I have said for SO LONG. Well guess what? Fuzpon Qusma ordered new kits from EDIRF somewhere in some weird boring country somewhere that doesnt matter. Anyways JUST LOOK AT THE RESULTS. Qusmo has played in the NEW white kits FIVE TIMES so far - & they have THREE WINS ONE DRAW AND ONE LOSS.

So look out to everyone - including who Qusmo is about to play next. That Rev Lepins probablly thinking oh look at me Im so cool Im so fancy I plaed for the national team Im the manager ooh Im so great I dont evern need a striker I can just be really cool because Im so cool WELL GUESS WHAT REV? YOURE NOT THAT COOL. & YOURE GOING TO LOOE> Well actually I guess hes pretty cool but the main point is that hes not going to win. Because Qusmos going to win.

But we werent even supposed to face Rev Lepin or Mytynyjy in the FIRST PLACE beacuse we werent even put in their GROUP You all THINK you know the groups but YOU DONT REALLY because I know the TRUE groups

Why would the World Cup Committee want to change the groups? You ask? Well FIRST OF ALL theyre NOT the world cup committee theyre the WORLD OLD BOYS CLUP COMMITTEE HA THATS WHAT YOU CALL A TOP QUALITY PUN & SECOND OF ALL the WOBCC wanted to RIG QUALIFYING AGAINST QUSMO. THATS why Qusmo has NEVER qualifieid for a world cup before. But now Ive CAUGHT THEM so theyre about to be EXPOSED In fact lets do that whole Spony Luq Television preview thing.

In pot 10 we got GLAMOD GLEWDINAN. They DONT HAVE A RANKED so wed BEAT THEM EASY.

In Pot 9 we got ASHAHSHAHSHEE. I dont know anything about them except they have a funny name but they seem BAD & even if theyARENT wed srill BEAT THEM

In pot 8 we got SULSULAND. I LOVE SULSULAND> I IDENTIFY WITH THESE SULSUS SO MUCH. I LOVE THEM. I AM THEM. THEY HUNGER FOR FISH & I HUNGER FOR THE TRUTH>

I n pot 7 we got VELESTREA. For some reason the WOBCC decided to put them in our FAKE GROUP too so obviously they must be GOOD because they were how the WOBCC tried to MAKE US LOSE but they WONT DO THAT bcause were BETER THAN THAT & were going to WIN i mean after all Velesrtra is so scared of Qusmo that it even changed its entire NAME

In pot 6 we got Quakmybush & Ill tell you WHAT thse evil people who run their world supergovernment organization place can go quak MY bush for all I care because Im going to spread the TRUTH no matter WHAT & Qusmo is going to WIN

In pot 5 we got SQUOONSHALOON ROOMNOONT STOOTS & we beat them BEFORE & we beat them BEFORE THAT & wed beat them AGAIN because were WINNERS

In pot 4 we got MAJJIJAJA & theyre ALSO someone the WOBCC decided to put in our FAKE GROUP & thats because they apparently WON a REALLY BIG TROPHY though if its in esportiva how big can it really be anyways MATTITATA is rally good & thats why they put them in there

In pot 3 we got QUSMO because QUSMOS the BEST & were going to WIN. Believe it o not, Qusmos the THIRD team from the real group that we ALSO got in our FAKE GROUP

In pot 2 we got BARKER PARK so apparently some type of DOG PARK but were going to beat them because we dont have the soul of a DOG because we have the heart of a JEJZ THATS RIGHT WERE JEJZY

& in pot 1 we got STARBLADA & apparently theyre not too bad but the WCOOBA decided that we shouldnt have THEM in our group because they helped with the EDIRF kits to BREAK OUR CURSE so the WFJCCC decided that STARBALD wouldnt get to experience the magnificence of playing on the same itch as us As PUNISHMENT for helping us break the DREADED WHITE CURSE

So THAT S It. WE COULD HAVE GONE TO THE WORLD CUP & WE COULDVE WON IT TOO. But you just wait well show the WORLD SNOBS COMMITTEE what were made off & were going to win despite the fact that its the HARDEST GROUP OF ALL TIME. Some Mittijitti place thought that it wasnt too tough but THATS JUST WHAT THEY WANT YOU TO THINK its actually the worst because WCCCCCCCCC RIGGED IT

Now you know the TRUTH so SPREAD IT

Youre welcome.

Qusmo has played two matched against SRS, winning one-nil both times, including once in Qusmo’s latest Tour of the Multiverse friendly series & once in the Cup of Harmony 73 quarterfinals.

The jejz is the national animal of Qusmo; surprisingly enough, A Blog got the plural version right, too, which is jejzy.

The press room at Mastad Qusma is full. People are everywhere; reporters, trying to get in the right spot to be noticed, & camerapeople, trying to get in the right spot to capture the moment. The clock strikes five o’clock. Nothing happens. No one emerges. The room gets anxious. After eight minutes - though it feels longer - a Fuzpon Qusma staffer appears & steps up to the microphone.

“Alright, everybody, settle down. The faster we get started, the more questions y’all can ask. Alright, great. Ban’s here to take questions, but they have to prepare for the big match tomorrow, so they don’t have a lot of time. So, let’s get started. Ban, take it away.”

Avarn-Oxolt Ban, manager of Qusmo’s national football team, walks in, thanks the staffer, & takes a turn at the microphone. “Hello, everyone. Let’s jump into the thick of things right away; I’ll start with Zyn.”

“Thank you. Hynym-Grilt Zyn, Blip kujz Evarty Qanza.” It was the national newspaper of record; of course it would get a question. “What was the key to winning against Mytanar, & will it work again tomorrow against Cosumar?”

“I said one question; don’t you know the rules?” Avarn-Oxolt joked. “Anyways, I can answer that second question right away: I sure hope so,” Avarn-Oxolt chuckled. “In all seriousness, Lev, Lev Repin, they’re a great manager. They have a really great understanding of tactics, & they posed a lot of challenges for us. But tactics are just that, & just as Repin can use tactics to try to outmanoeuvre us, we can use tactics of our own to try to outmanoeuvre them. & I think that’s just what we did.”

“I think Jerat-Jonto Jan is a great player; they deserve a spot on this national team. Every single one of the twenty-five players with us is a great player & deserves a place here. & I am willing to call on any one of them, at any time, if I think it can help our team win. & I am confident that every player on our roster can help our team win; otherwise, I wouldn’t have called them up to the roster in the first place.”

“I know that a lot of people aren’t confident in our offense. I get it; we’re no Farfadillis. We don’t have the gaudy goal tallies. But we don’t need to score six every match; if our defense is playing the way it usually does, & the way I am confident it will continue to, we just need one. The match in Thessia was a great example of that; we neutralized the double false nines, & we had just enough firepower to earn all three points. This game isn’t about how pretty it looks; at the end of the day, it’s about the results. & that’s just what we were able to do.”

“As for Cosumar, they play some really great football. That’s beyond dispute. Just look at how they opened the campaign; on the very first match, they won six-nil. The talent on their squad is phenomenal. Even their bench players are world-class; just look at [Zoë] Aedelbrandt, who got a hat trick of assists in twenty minutes of play as a substitute. They have had the true luxury of being able to rotate players & still pick up great results; so, when they’re about to play the group leaders in an away fixture to earn the group lead, & control over their qualification, I would be shocked if they didn’t go with their first-choice XI, or something very close to it. & we have to be prepared for that.”

“Once of the best ways we can prepare for it, of course, is through our defense. Look, a draw against Cosumar is a result. It’s picking up a point against a team we’ve been written off against. It makes them drop two points they thought they had in the bag. I’d be happy with a draw. But whether we’re playing for a draw or for a win, in order to earn any points tomorrow, we need a fantastic match from our defense.”

“We’ve been studying that Velestria match to see how to stop Cosumar, & we’ve been studying that Mattijana match to see how to score. But if we can post a clean sheet - & if Velestria can do it, I have an abundance of confidence in our back line that, although it certainly won’t be easy, we can do it - all we need is one goal to pick up three points. So I think you can expect a very similar lineup tomorrow as the one we used in Mytanija, two false nines or not. We’ll see how well it will work.”

“Thank you. Cralt-Sylax Ixi, Spony Luq Television.” Spony Luq got the next question on account of being the top sports network in Qusmo. “How important for Qusmo’s chances to qualify would a win in tomorrow’s match be?”

Avarn-Oxolt paused. “Obviously, it’s important. We’re two points in the clear now, & a win here would put us five points clear. If Mytanija can manage to win at King William [VII National Park], we’d actually have a five-point gap ahead of second place, even, with a win over Cosumar. I know a lot of people think that a win is three points, no matter what, but I’d be lying if this match didn’t mean something more. Yes, it’s only Matchday Four, but having a five-point lead after only four matchdays would be an amazing boost for our confidence.”

“We led our qualifying group early on last cycle. We had a good start. But we were always tied with someone else on the top. We never had a gap. We never had a cushion. & to have a cushion of five points, after defeating Mytanija & then Cosumar in succession? Those are two teams that deserve to be in the World Cup, hands down. I think it’s clear that Mytanija is one of the top teams in Rushmore, & I think they can go toe-to-toe with just about any team out there in the Multiverse. But we went toe-to-toe with them, & we walked off their pitch with a win.”

“& after Turori finally broke their curse, I think Cosumar is competing with the Equestrian States for the title of the Audioslavia or the Krytenia of the quarterfinals,” Avarn-Oxolt quipped. “I think they’ll be dissatisfied not just if they don’t qualify - I think that’s obvious - but also if they don’t top the group. & they’re absolutely capable of doing that. They’re the favourites for doing that. We can’t count them out. They know the importance of this match just as well as we do. [Manager Alexander] Pearce has talked about that, & I know that they will treat the match very seriously, & they will play very hard. But it’s my hope that we’ll have that fire in our bellies that will push us to play even harder, & to get a result, & even to get three points.”

“I can tell you what: If we can manage to make this happen, we can do anything. We can keep this lead going, through the Vartugia & Velestria matches, & we can keep it going for a long time. We can even qualify to the World Cup.” Avarn-Oxolt paused, scanning the room. “& now let’s have - Oh, of course we need a question from Xyt.”

“Thanks, Ban. Wanar-Milor Xyt, Blip kujz Evarty Zwalla.” This was Avarn-Oxolt’s newspaper; NAME3 was the beat reporter who covered Avarn-Oxolt when they were still just the manager of a small, struggling club called KF Zwac. Avarn-Oxolt smiled, remembering those days. “If Qusmo, Mytanija, & Mattijana win, Qusmo will be on a perfect twelve, while the other teams in the top five pots will be in a four-way tie on seven points. Who would qualify to the World Cup alongside Qusmo?”

Avarn-Oxolt laughed. “Ah, that’s the tricky Xyt I know. Even if we have a lead, there’ll be fourteen matchdays after this one, & we’ll need to work very hard to keep it, with a target squarely on our backs. &, of course, we need to perform well in this next to even have a lead in the first place.” The Fuzpon Qusma aide who opened the presser walked up to the stand & whispered something in the manager’s ear. “I’m sorry, everyone, but I’m being told we’re out of time. I know you all wish we had the whole day to get good quotes & stories, but hopefully you’ll all have some very fun stories to write tomorrow. I’ll see you all then.” Avarn-Oxolt walked off the stage & headed for the practice field. There was work to be done.

Qusmyr refers to the monarch of Qusmo; they are its head of state. Qusmi Bez translates literally as “first Qusmi.” They are the head of government of Qusmo, like a prime minister or (in some countries) a president. They lead a coalition in Qusejzym, the parliament (or legislature) of Qusmo. The royal we is used by the Qusmyr.

Chapter I.

“My Qusmyr.” Their thoughts were interrupted. “Qusmi Bez is here to see you.”

Qusmyr Qaq remembered the date. “Of course. Send them in.” Qusmyr Qaq wanted nothing more than to send Qusmi Bez away, but it was their duty. Qusmyr Qaq waited &, sure enough, they soon heard the sound of two sets of steps echoing towards them.

“My Qusmyr, I present you Drolx-Dalox Aka, Qusmi Bez.” Qusmyr Qaq steeled themself for the meeting to come.

“It is my great honour to be received by my Qusmyr; you, truly, are Qusmi Bez.” It was all part of the game; nothing more, nothing less. If Drolx-Dalox Aka thought it would help them, they would look you in the eye & stab you in the back. “For what purpose have you called me here today?” A Qusmyr always invited whoever they would receive to their residence; no one ever called upon the Qusmyr. It was custom. It was tradition. It was a charade.

“Drolx-Dalox Aka, our parents, their parents, & their parents before them have ruled this great nation for one thousand ninety-three generations.” It was the same speech that Qusmyr Qaq had given so many times before, including to Drolx-Dalox on three occasions. “However, our continued authority depends on its acceptance by the people of this country.” It was the same speech that generations of Qusmyry had given for centuries to hundreds of Qusmi’y Bez. “To that end, as a leader of our people & for our country, entrusted with the confidence of all Qusmi’y through the process of democratic elections, we would like to invite you to submit recommendations for the speech we shall deliver to Qusejzym in one week’s time to guide this year’s session.” & every year, Qusmyr Qaq parroted what Qusmi’y Bez told them to say.

“My Qusmyr, I am deeply humbled & honoured by your invitation.” Drolx-Dalox’s knowing grin told otherwise. “As your subject & your servant, I shall, of course, endeavour to do whatever I can for my Qusmyr & for Qusmo.” Just as long as it was good for the polls, of course. “There are a certain number of matters which I believe to be of especial interest to the nation.” Qusmyr Qaq softly sighed but silently nodded their assent.

“We shall take these proposals into consideration.” We both knew that we would take them into more than mere consideration. “Infrastructure is always a noble goal, as is education. Public transportation is a somewhat novel goal, but one which we believe would be in the best interest of our country. I believe your initiative to open foreign markets for Qusma businesses is overdue. These are well-founded goals.”

“Thank you, my Qusmyr.” Drolx-Dalox smiled & began to reach for the materials they had prepared for the meeting.

“I was not finished.”

“My apologies, my Qusmyr. What else did you have on your mind?” Drolx-Dalox was clearly not sorry in the least. It was just like them to say one thing & not mean it at all.

“What else you have on your mind, more precisely - or, perhaps, what else you do not have on your mind.”

“I beg your pardon, my Qusmyr?” Now they began to take notice.

“I am afraid that, in my age, my hearing is not what it used to be. I seem not to have heard you say anything about our energy sources, or our health care system, or our foreign policy. I heard nothing of engaging with our region in a more meaningful way, through the Common Rushmori Community.” It is so fitting for Drolx-Dalox to be snarling at us, as they are now. Do they think they know indignity?

“My Qusmyr, I can assure you that my government will be attentive to these concerns. But we cannot go forward with membership in the Community yet; we simply are not ready for it.”

“When will we be ready, Aka? That is precisely what you told us the last time we met, & the time before then, & the time before then. Do not make us think you are a coward.” Although we know you already are. “Do what is right. You may leave me now.”

“Thank you, my Qusmyr. It has been my honour & my pleasure.” They stuck out their hand. Qusmyr Qaq did not respond. Aka turned to leave.

After all these years, after all these glories, after all these generations, this is what Qusmo has come to. Our forebearers would never have tolerated such insolence. There would not even be a Qusmi Bez. What a Qusmyr would say would be the law. How could our country be ruled by such a weak, sniveling coward today? How could we be so helpless to do anything about it? How could we be even weaker than they?

Upon reflection, perhaps that is not entirely true. We are obliged to address Qusejzym, & we are obliged to outline Aka’s goals for their term. But that is not all we can do.

Qusmyr Qaq paused, & they scanned the crowd before settling their gaze squarely upon one particular individual. “But we cannot content ourselves with these small goals, albeit noble. There is more which can be done; there is more which must be done.” The cabinet seated in Qusejzym began to murmur amongst themselves; this is not how they expected the speech to go. “It is clear to us that the time of relying only upon ourselves must be consigned to the past. We must open ourselves to the international community; we must open the Multiverse to Qusmo. We must establish strong alliances, economically, politically, & militarily, with nations throughout our region in order to benefit our own home. We must join the Common Rushmori Community.”

Qusejzym erupted immediately; in the midst of the din, however, one figure stayed silent. Drolx-Dalox looked as though they had seen a ghost. It might have been the only ghost they cared about: that of their own political career, slain before their eyes.

Qusmyr Qaq smiled.

Before declaring that Qusmo ought to join the Common Rushmori Community, Qusmyr Qaq also spoke at length about Qusmi Bez Drolx-Dalox Aka’s actual policy agenda for the coming year, including creating & expanding foreign markets for Qusma businesses. If you would like to explore an economic partnership with a Qusma business, Drolx-Dalox Aka is happy to do business with you. Possibilities include Blonvarz Qusma, an architecture & construction firm; Qusmair, an airline; or Qazqav, a bank. If you are interested, please feel free to contact me.

Chapter II.

Flonz-Gerol Den had the Qusmyr’s annual speech to Qusejzym on in the background, but they weren’t paying terribly close attention.

“Alright, let’s finish this up. We need to have this statement prepared; if we can time this right, it’s going to be massive news. We could get some major deals going from this.” They headed the public relations division at Blonvarz Qusma, Qusmo’s premier construction & architecture firm. The company was friendly with the Drolx-Dalox administration - you had to be in this business - & their superiors knew beforehand what the contents of Qusmyr Qaq’s speech would be. & they knew that expanding markets for Qusma businesses would be one of Qusmyr’s top points.

“This is the one moment all year long that we can have a launching pad like this. People from all across Rushmore - people from all across the Multiverse - will be watching this. They’ll be seeing what’s happening. & we need to take advantage of that attention & that coverage immediately.” Den had ordered their press team to prepare a statement, but it had been a failure. As it always was with these people. If Den had it their way...

“Pan, what do we have?”

“I’m sorry, but we need a few more minutes.”

“A few more minutes? Are you thinking straight? Everyone, stop. I said stop! Everyone, you listen to me right now: we don’t need this statement in a few more minutes; we need this statement last week. & if you hadn’t botched it the first time, we wouldn’t be in this mess. Get it done. Now!”

It was then that Den heard Qusmyr Qaq finish the last point they were scheduled to make. Den realized they wouldn’t be able to get the press release out in time to coincide with the end of Qusmyr’s speech. They had failed. Everyone else in the room knew it, too. Work ceased. A hush fell. Everyone wondered whether they would have a job in the morning.

But then, from the screen, came an unfamiliar series of words: “But we cannot content ourselves with these small goals, albeit noble. There is more which can be done; there is more which must be done.” Den stood in shock for a moment; was there a late new addition that their higher-ups hadn’t told them about? After gawking for a few seconds, they quickly turned to their team. “Well, don’t just sit there! We have another chance! Let’s take it!”

The team got to work at a furious pace. From Qusejzym, Qusmyr announced, “It is clear to us that the time of relying only upon ourselves must be consigned to the past. We must open ourselves to the international community; we must open the Multiverse to Qusmo. We must establish strong alliances, economically, politically, & militarily, with nations throughout our region in order to benefit our own home.”

“The longer they keep talking, the longer we have - but it won’t be long. Let’s go!”

“We have a statement!” yelled one of the staffers.

Den practically ran over. “Let’s read it. Okay… okay… alright, good. That’s good. Let’s send it!” Den felt like raising their hands up to the sky; that likely just saved their job. “We’re just in time; fantastic job, everyone. I knew you all could manage to pull this off. Great work.”

As Den was heading out of the room, Qusmyr Qaq finished & analysts were already beginning to discuss their speech. “Qusmyr Qaq spoke on a wide range of issues today, but the only one which will be remembered will be these words: ‘We must join the Common Rushmori Community.’”

Den froze. “Oh, no. Oh, no. No, this can’t be.” They came back into the room to see what, exactly, had happened, & all of the rest of their team was glued to their seats, their eyes fixated squarely on the television set. It was just as bad as they feared. Den didn’t give a damn one way or another whether or not Qusmo joined the CRC, but they knew a whole lot of other people did. There was no chance this wouldn’t upstage their own announcement. There was no chance that all the work they had put in hadn’t just been wasted.

Den tried to gather themself in order to gather everyone else. “This is no time to panic, everyone. This might not be the top of the news anymore, but it’s still important. We’ll still get some attention from this.” Den looked around the room, but no one was buying it. Truth be told, Den wasn’t really buying what they themself were saying. The prospect of joining the Common Rushmori Community would dominate all of the news coverage of this speech, in Qusmo, throughout Rushmore, & across the Multiverse. The prospects for Blonvarz Qusma, or any other Qusma company, to get the massive free advertisement to foreign markets that they were expecting suddenly & completely disappeared. They changed tacks.

“&, besides, we know that Qusmyr Qaq will be talking economic ties between Qusmo & Banija in their meeting with the Isebantu. Banija has a large market, they’re on the rise, & most of all, oil is going to make them rich. They’ll need the resources we can provide for them to help them grow their economy to its full potential as quickly as it can. We all know what that means: massive opportunity. & we don’t need flashy speeches; we just need the contract. That’s all that matters. & this is the most effective, direct way to ensuring we get it.” Den didn’t see smiles, but they did see nods. That’s all they needed.

“Good. Let’s get back to work. As long as this meeting goes smoothly, we’ll be back in business.”

What could go wrong?

A Blog

I HATE GOATS

So apparently Qusmo CAN”T SCORE GOALS Thats bad. But Qusmo is still doing well. If Spony Luq Television can do it, I can do it too. Let’s do the third-of-the-way analysis.

Lets look at the DEFENSE. There job is to STEP GOALS & they’re DOIG IT. Match one against Sajjur: they SHUT THEM OUT. Match two against Kavagrad: they were already up by three so they just let two in JUST TO MAKE IT INTEERESTING. Match three against Mytanija: they SHUT THEM OUT TOO. & in matches five & six against Vartugia & Velestria, Qusmo SHUT THEM OUT TOO.

But there’s a problem with the Cosumar match, number four. Qusmo “conceded tree goals.” Well guess what? They only did that tecause the WORLD CUP CCOOMMIITTEE decided to RIG the match.

Let’s take a look at thet first goa by Cosumar. Ther are THREE problem with it: first, Cunix-Betva Tla was suposed to have “stepped on some random Cosumar person’s foot.” But guess what? It’s called FOOTBALL. You’re SUPPOSED to use your feet, & also the other person’s feet. Cunix-Betva Tla wasn’t a goalkeeper the last time I checked.

Second, some person called “Horatius Charmancer” is supposed to have scored. WHAT THE HECK KIND OF A NAME IS HORATIUS CHARMANCER? A MADE UP NAME I’ll tell you that.

& third there was apparently some type of “goal line technology” that was used to say that the goal went in. But guess what? Xynat-Evela Cuf PUNCHED THAT THING OUTTA THERE. I mean, it only BARELY went in, so it can’t REALLY count, right? At best, it should only be HALF a goal, not a FULL one.

Now let’s look at the SECOND goal. The referee decided to award some kind of PENALTY even though ALL YELTO-ALFAN ONO DID was shove a player from the opposing team to the ground in the penalty box as they were clear through on goal. HOW IS THAT A PENALTY? Ill tell you what: back in MY day, you could HIT the quaterback. Now they won’t even let you TOUCH them. What kind of a world are we living in where you cant HIT PEOPLE in FOOTBALL?

Oh wait - maybe that was the other kind of football. I dont know. You never know against the se Cosumar people, do you? Sorry sometimes I get a little bit confused. I used to play some gridiron back in the day & I was pretty good at it but then I got eightteen concussions. That was too bad. I was only able to play eleven seasons after that. So I’m sorry if I get a little mixed up.

BUT I”M NOT MIXED UP ABOUT THAT THIR GOAL & I’M NOT CONFUSED EITHER. That Romikk Valgaarrdd person shouldnt even BE ON THE PITCH. In fact the only reason they even let them is because theyre GOOD. If that wasnt true then Qusmo wouldnt have let it in because the Romikk person wouldnt be on the pitch to score it.

So there you have it: Qusmo’s defense hasnt conceded a single LEGITIMATE goal in their first six qualifying matches - & THEY NEVRE WILL BECAUSE THEYRE THE BEST. But the offense isnt doing as well.

Qusmos offense hasn’t scored a goal since the fourth minute of matchday four. Apparently theyre only allowed to score in the minute of the number that the matchday is. So that means that Qusmo hasnt scord in TWO HUNDRED SIXTY MINUTES. That’s A LOT. & that’s BAD because scoring goals is GOOD. In fact, a litt-leknown fact is that you need to score goals to win. & winnings good.

Unfortunately Qusmo hasn’t done a whole lot of winning lately. They started off with their typical two wins to open qualifying, like in World Cup 80 Qualifying & World Cup 81 Qualifying & World Cup 82 Qualifying. They even got ANOTHER win to top it off against Mytanija in match number three. & Qusmo started to keep it up against Cosumar. They were ahead 1-0 before they lost. But then they lost & Qusmo hasn’t scord since.

Okay, I can kinda-sorta understand not being able to score against Cosumar. They’re really good. They ALWAYS qualify to the World Cup, they ALWAYS advance to the knockout rounds, they ALWAYS win a knockout match, & they ALWAYS lose in the quarterfinals. & they can do that because they have people in their country from all over the Multiverse, even not on their planet. In fact, they even have people who aren’t people on their team. & I can undestand Velestria - well, not really, but they’ve kept FIVE STRAIGHT clean sheets, INCLUDING one against Cosumar, so apparently they have to have a pretty good defense, too. But one match DOES NOT MAKE SENSE TO ME AT ALL.

That match was number five against Vartugia. Vartugia is LITERALLY the ONLY TEAM in the ENTIRE FORTY-FOUR TEAM Baptism of Fire 69 that didn’t earn a SINGLE POINT - A SINGLE WIN, A SINGLE DRAW - in ANY of their SIX MATCHES. THAT’S SIX LOSSES OUT OF SIX> & GUESS WHT? THEY”GE MANAGED BY A GOAT. IT”S LITERALLY JUST A GOAT> CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT? & QUSMO WASN”T ABLE TO SCORE A SINGLE GOAL AGAINST THEM> HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?

I’ll tell you how: because the wOrLD BOYS CLUB CUP COMMITTEE decided to RIG IT. They let Vartugia play on a pitch that was a TRIANGLE. & it was A THIRD of the size of a NORMAL field. & the pitch was FULLY FLOODED. THIS IS NOT A HYBERPOLE. IT WAS LITERALLY UNDER THREE FEET OF WATER. I KNOW THE WBCCC IS REALLY SUPID, BUT HOW STUPID CAN THEY BE? HOW OBVIOUS & CLEAR & BLATANT CAN THEIR RIGGING OF THE GAME BE?

This is an OUTGRAGE - but I know that I won’t be angry ALONE. No, my blog has SKYROCKETED in popularity - in fact, maybe even SPACEROCKETED - since I published my last blog post. I CAN’T EVEN EXPLAIN IT. I posted that article with FOUR regular viewers but it got FOURTEEN MILLION VIEWS. That’s AMAZING. IT’s INCREDIBLE. It’s a GOVERNMENT CONSPIRACY.

The GOVERNMENT wants to “EPAND OUTWARDS TOWARD RUSHMORE” & “JOIN THE COMMUNITY OF RUSHMORE” & BLAH BLAH BLAH. So they want to introduce the ENTIRE REGION - & the ENTIRE MULTIVERSE - to THE FINEST PARTS of QUSMA CULTURE that WE AS A COUNTRY can POSSIBLY OFFER THE REST OF THE MLTIVERSE. & THE FACT THAT QUSMI’Y LIKE ME REPORT THE TRUTH MUST BE THE BEST PART OF QUSMO. THAT’S HOW THEY HOPE TO PROVE TO EVERONE THAT QUSMO IS GREAT & THAT WE SHOULD BE ACcEPTED BY OTHER NATIONS.

Well, GUES WHAT? I REFUSE to be used as some PAWN in some government PLOT. I WILL PERSEVERE & I WILL UNCOVER THE TRUTH. & in fact, some peope have even decided to JOIN ME>

I’m talking about someone from Lisander called QUINTINO THE PREACHER. They’re a RIP-OFF & a KNOCK_OFF of the WONDERFUL BLOG that I have worked SO HARD to create. On the oter hand they’r not afraid to spread the TRUTH so that’s all that matters. So I SALUTE the LYING OPPORTUNISTIC MONEYGRUBBING FRAUDSTER because whoever they are they’re spreading the TRUTH. At the very least they’re a whole lot better than those awful Vlartugan GOATS.

SPONY LUQ TELEVISION

Hello, all. Welcome to Spony Luq Television, broadcasting from Qanz, Qusmo. With a five-three loss in Mattijana that could prove vital to both nations’ hopes of qualification, Avarn-Oxolt Ban’s headaches have not abided. Qusmo simply has not been in form of late, & although it is still, for the most part, on the fringes, Avarn-Oxolt may not have experienced as much opposition to their tenure as they do now since they took over. With that, let’s get to our first question, from a viewer in Qanz.
What’s gone so wrong with the national team?

First, Avarn-Oxolt has not been able to fix Qusmo’s offensive woes. This is somewhat concerning, because Avarn-Oxolt does not lack for talent; Xilit-Zaxac Yol & Paliv-Xilit Max, their two forwards in their Matchday One Starting XI, each had a record of approximately one goal from every other match for the national team. That should be no surprise, as Xilit-Zaxac is Pug Qusmyra’s record transfer, incoming or outgoing, after being named Fuzpon Qusma’s Forward of the Season, while Paliv-Xilit has been a regular starter for Pascal Mashu of Kita-Hinode the past two seasons, a club which has scored the most goals of any in the KiHi-LEAGUE in both years Paliv-Xilit has been there & won the league last season.

Even if Xilit-Zaxac or Paliv-Xilit are not in form, Avarn-Oxolt has a wealth of riches on the bench, too. The team’s reserve striker is Prant-Pertz Gor, the striker who won two Pugy Qusmyra in two seasons with KF Qastyr & led Qastyr to its first Champions’ Cup quarterfinal after being a key reason why it was the highest-scoring club in that year’s Champions’ Cup group stage. If Avarn-Oxolt wants to alter their tactics or needs more width in attack, they also have options available like Ozolx-Mazur Guv, whose departure from KF Rejin after Ryrak Bez saw their former club plummet from fifth & invited to the Vilitan Cove Invitational to eighteenth & relegated in the span of a single season.

Despite that, Qusmo simply has not been a consistently strong attacking side. Qusmo has scored only nine goals so far in its first seven matches of the World Cup 82 Qualifying campaign. That is not out of step with previous cycles - but that’s precisely the problem. In World Cup 81 Qualifying, Qusmo was able to manage only eight goals in their first seven matches, one short of their current pace; they stayed competitive for a playoff place, but despite an historically good defense, they ultimately fell short because they could not score in big matches down the stretch, & they collected one point instead of three. Going back one year further to Qusmo’s first foray into international football, the team started World Cup 80 Qualifying with that same figure of nine goals in seven matches. Without that strong defense, Qusmo did poorly, finishing seventh place in their group of ten, with only twenty-two points.

That’s relevant now - & increasingly concerning - because Qusmo’s defense is simply not performing anywhere near the vaunted level it was expected to be at, having conceded ten goals already in its first seven matches. That is only the sixth-best defensive record in the group of ten; Qusmo is much closer to the mark of Sajnur, whose twelve goals mark it the second-worst defense in the group, than to Cosumar, whose five goals mark it the group’s third-best defense.

It is a far cry from last cycle’s performance, too, when Qusmo was tied for the ninth-best defensive mark among all one hundred ninety nations which entered World Cup Qualifying throughout the Multiverse. That wasn’t due to having poor offenses in the group, either, as Qusmo had the best defensive record by far in their group, at a rate of just over forty percent of the next-best mark of twenty-two goals conceded, while Axuva conceded sixty-four goals, the most out of any of the one hundred ninety nations in World Cup Qualifying by a margin of five goals.

Turning our attention to the history books, Qusmo has conceded more goals in these seven matches than it did in the first twenty matches of the eighty-first WCC cycle; it conceded only nine goals in eighteen World Cup Qualifying matches & recorded consecutive clean sheets in its first two matches of the Cup of Harmony group stage. To put it in another perspective, Qusmo has conceded the same number of goals in these seven matches as it did in its first seven matches of World Cup 80 Qualifiers - the first seven matches the team ever played.

Looking specifically at this match, Qusmo has never conceded more goals in a single match than the five it conceded to Mattijana. It is the fifth time Qusmo has ever conceded five goals in a single match & only the third time they have done so in a competitive fixture. The previous two competitive matches in which Qusmo’s defense allowed five goals were both against Ceni: the away fixture & then the home fixture on Matchdays Eight & Seventeen, respectively, against the Rushmori giants in World Cup 80 Qualifying.

Shifting our focus to Qusmo’s recent form as a whole, Qusmo has drawn twice, lost twice, & has not won since starting the campaign as the only Group 11 team to win their first three matches. Qusmo has not played more than three competitive matches without earning at least three points since World Cup 80 Qualifying, when it happened twice: first the long six-match period from Matchdays Three through Eight in which Qusmo won no matches, drew once, & lost five times, & then a four-match skid from Matchdays Fourteen through Seventeen in which Qusmo won no matches, drew twice, & lost twice. Interestingly enough, the last match of both of these winless streaks was a match in which Qusmo conceded five goals - the two World Cup Qualifying defeats to Ceni - before they were ended by wins against Omerica.

So, perhaps a rebound is in the cards for Qusmo. They would certainly hope it is. After ascending to the top of the Group 11 table, they have fallen to fourth & could easily drop further if their current form persists, only a single point above sixth-place Sajnur. However, Qusmo is still only in fourth place; they can certainly still salvage their campaign if they can get back on track.

That will start with a match in Alluersia. Alluersia may not seem like the toughest opponent Qusmo could face, but it would be a mistake to underestimate the difficulty of this matchup. Alluersia has had a bad stretch of form, but they are on a great run of form that their place on the table hides. After earning just one point in their first four matches, the team drew with one hundred second-ranked Kavagrad on Matchday Five, then drew on the following matchday with reigning Esportivan champions Mattijana - a result Qusmo could not manage, in embarrassing fashion - & has just compounded Lev Repin’s woes in Matchday Seven by defeating fellow Rushmoris Mytanija. Alluersia is performing much better in recent weeks, on a three-match unbeaten streak against the three Group 11 teams directly under Qusmo in the rankings, with results growing more impressive with each successive week. If Qusmo is not careful, both teams’ run of form could well continue.

However, the fact that this match will be played in Alluersia is also of note. Alluersia represents a separatist region of West Guiana which has declared independence. West Guiana still claims the territory as its own, however, & violence has broken out pertaining to the cause of Alluersian independence. Qusmo’s government has expressed concern over the situation recently, advising no Qusmi’y to travel to Alluersia to support their team. In addition, the Qusma government has announced that it will station Qusma troops on the Teus ship the STSS König Johannes for the duration that any Qusmi’y are in Alluersia for the match, to allow the Qusma military to respond quickly in the event that violence breaks out again & Qusmi’y are caught in the crossfire.

With militarized conditions, no support from home, & the possibility of war & violence looming so large that their government has stationed troops offshore in anticipation of it, the Qusma team will have to deal with a multitude of psychological conditions that will make play extremely difficult - & that will compound being on a four-match skid against an underdog host team on a three-match unbeaten run. Qusmo will hope that this match will be the answer to turning the team’s fortunes around, but it could just as well put Qusmo in a yet-deeper hole.

Whatever the result, Qusmo will close the first half of the qualification campaign at Mastad Kolla against Saltstead. With fifteen points, Saltstead leads the group & is looking squarely at returning to the World Cup - a feat they were able to achieve in the last cycle. Saltstead is the only team in the group to have not lost a single match so far, & they have both a slightly better offensive record than Qusmo’s & the best defensive record of any other team in the group so far, with only three goals conceded. Qusmo conceded more than Saltstead’s seven match (& counting) total in a single half against Mattijana. Saltstead has eliminated Qusmo in a critical fixture before: the Round of Sixteen of Cup of Harmony 72. It could well be that Saltstead delivers a knockout blow once again - consigning Qusmo to another Cup of Harmony.

There will be no changes in Avarn-Oxolt’s Starting XI among the attack & through most of the midfield, with the strike partnership of Prant-Pertz Gor at striker & Paliv-Xilit Max at poacher which yielded three goals in Mattijana to continue. In addition, Ilinx-Kepex Zev, Gavax-Nenzi Abe, Helek-Nenzi Ono, & Ilinx-Ibilx Tla will continue to play from the opening whistle. However, there will be big changes at the back. First, Jerat-Jonto Jan will replace Yunal-Julad Waz at defensive midfielder. Next, though Cunix-Betva Tla & Zenon-Gerol Kal retain their positions anchoring the back line, Ozolx-Alfan Ixi will be replaced at centreback by Lynul-Savar Mal. Finally, goalkeeper Xynat-Evela Cuf will be replaced by Vanza-Jerat Gep in the upcoming fixture.

WHAT IS HAPPENING

QUSMO of ALL PEOPLE is subbmitting their RP SIXTEEN HOURS before the cutof? WHAT IS GOING ON??????

Avarn-Oxolt Ban stepped up to the microphone again. The setting was much the same as their previous press conferences, but the mood was decidedly sombre. Avarn-Oxolt cleared their throat & prepared for the onslaught to come.

“Reports claim that you have had crisis talks with Fuzpon Qusma & rumours say that they have given you an ultimatum for tomorrow. If Qusmo doesn’t win tomorrow, will you have a job in two days’ time?”

“We will win. Next question.”

“The failures of the Alluersia match have been widely attributed to the players’ mental stress because of the fraught geopolitical situation in the country. As the manager, to what degree do you feel responsible for leaving your players psychologically unprepared?”

“I don’t feel we were unprepared; we just didn’t perform. Next question.”

“Does the fact that Qusmo was outscored by four goals against Mattijana in the second half despite leading three-one at halftime suggest that the team is overreliant on Ilinx-Kepex Zev?”

“Ilinx-Kepex Zev is a great player, but we win & we lose as a team. Next question.”

“If Qusmo lose tomorrow, it will have matched its record competitive winless run & will be on pace to match Qusmo’s points total from its World Cup 80 Qualifying campaign. Has the national team made any progress since you first took over?”

“Yes, it has, & we will see it tomorrow. Next question.”

“In sixty-three competitive matches, you have employed a 3-5-2 sixty times, with all three exceptions coming in World Cup 80 Qualifying. Do you believe your tactical inflexibility is hurting Qusmo’s chances of success?”

“No, I believe our consistency comes from the fact that the 3-5-2 best fits our personnel & our tactics. Next question.”

“The lone result Qusmo has had against a top hundred opponent in the current campaign is Mytanija, which is on a winless run even longer than Qusmo’s own & only just snapped a five-match losing streak, longer than any in Qusmo’s history. Given Qusmo’s other matches against such opposition were multi-goal defeats, can Qusmo beat quality opposition?”

“Yes, we’ve demonstrated that in the past, & we’ll demonstrate that again tomorrow. Next question.”

“If Qusmo loses tomorrow, they will fall ten points behind Saltstead with only nine matches to go & will likely be seven points behind Cosumar. Is it possible to bridge either of those gaps?”

“We will win. Next question.”

“If Qusmo fails to win tomorrow, it could win every match it plays throughout the entirety of the second half of the qualifiers & still not qualify for the World Cup. If Qusmo fails to win, is it all but eliminated from contention for qualification?”

“We will win tomorrow. Next question.”

“For four consecutive matches, you have made multiple changes to the Starting XI, including three changes in the past two. Is this a sign that the team is in crisis & that you don’t trust or perhaps don’t know your own players?”

“No, it shows we have a lot of players who can step up when their teammates are out of form. Next question.”

“Are you capable of leading Qusmo to a World Cup?”

“Yes. Next question.”

“Make your case to Fuzpon Qusma & to the Qusma public: why shouldn’t you be sacked?”

Avarn-Oxolt paused. “The results are what matters, & if we look at what they’ve been throughout my whole tenure, they have been very good. We’ve come so far, from being unranked at the beginning of the eightieth cycle to taking third place in the Cup of Harmony at the end of the eighty-first, to expecting great things at the beginning of the eighty-second. This is a hiccough in the road, but we will win tomorrow, & we will use that as our turning point to get Qusmo back to the level we all know it can & ought to be.”

“& if you don’t win?”

“Thank you all for your questions. I’ll see you tomorrow after the match.”

Fuzpon Qusma has given Avarn-Oxolt Ban an ultimatum: win against Saltstead or face the sack. If Qusmo fails to win against Saltstead, then, Fuzpon Qusma will be in need of a new manager. If Fuzpon Qusma hires a domestic candidate, Tlanx-Nulzk Hal would be the clear frontrunner. However, Fuzpon Qusma is open to hiring a foreign manager as well. If a manager from your nation is interested, please send me the name of your candidate or candidates, as well as their ideal style modifier & formation & a summary of who they are, where they’ve managed, & what they’ve done. You can start sending in applicants before Matchday Nine’s scorination, though I will only take them if Qusmo fails to win, because I would like to announce Qusmo’s next manager before Matchday Ten if Qusmo fails to win on Matchday Nine. You can contact me via either TG or Discord, though I would prefer the latter, as I don’t want to clog my TG inbox.

This was originally supposed to be a Part II of the RP I released for Matchday Eight, but I didn’t have enough time to finish it then. It is inaccurate in light of Matchday Nine’s scores, but it illustrates how Cralt-Nirlo was thinking at the time - & his character more generally.

They put the paper down & smiled. They hadn’t been too optimistic since they got sacked, but Cralt-Nirlo Fox felt optimistic in a way they hadn’t since the World Cup. “Look at all these jobs opening up.”

It was true: there were a lot of national teams that were having serious discussions about sacking their manager. Some even had pulled the trigger. & a ship would need a new captain at the helm - & it just might be them.

Filindostan won’t last long before they start taking applications. They’ve already sacked their manager. Twilight Striker. They had had some good times with her. She had taught them a lot. They had been a team. But Cralt-Nirlo moved on to bigger & better things since being on the staff as an assistant for the second half of World Cup 80 Qualifiers & for Filindostan’s Cup of Harmony 72 quarterfinal run. &, from the recent results, it was lucky they had.

Filindostan had started off their qualifying campaign with a murderer’s row of a schedule. & they were slaughtered. When Twilight Striker had been sacked, she had earned only a single point from the team’s first four matches. With Cassadaigua & Polkopia each taking full points from their first four matches, Filindostan was already eleven points off pace for a qualification pace, after only four matches. That was the largest gap among all one hundred fifty teams which were in the qualifying campaign.

Filindostan had to make a change. It was understandable. & they did. & the caretaker even had a little success to start their run; they had gotten Filindostan back into the conversation, & they showed that there was potential in San Marco - something Cralt-Nirlo had already learned from their time there. But Ethel Toh was just an executive & a caretaker, & they’ve only faced minnows so far. Once they face the Sherpa Empire, Starblaydia, Polkopia, Omerica, & Cassadaigua in succession, things would look very different.

& wouldn’t the FFF love to welcome back their former assistant manager who increased Filindostan’s offensive production sevenfold after arriving midway through World Cup 80 Qualifying? Wouldn’t they want to welcome back the manager who had qualified for a World Cup, who had earned Qasden its first World Cup win, & who had started their national team career with Filindostan itself - & had such success?

& then there was Qusmo, Cralt-Nirlo’s own home. The stories there were well-documented. Avarn-Oxolt Ban had been decent before, when Fuzpon Qusma barely expected to ever win a match, but they hadn’t performed up to their expectations this cycle. Avarn-Oxolt could get Qusmo to be a middling team, but excellence was clearly beyond their grasp.

Cralt-Nirlo could help with that. Avarn-Oxolt had typically had a good defense - though even that was failing them now - but they were never able to have any sort of offensive success. & that is precisely what has kept the team from actually enjoying success when it has mattered. Whenever Qusmo faced the opponents that mattered, it failed. It got close to Polkopia in World Cup 81 Qualifying, but when it actually played the then-two-hundred-twenty-third-ranked team in the Multiverse, Qusmo could only collect a single point from their two matches. Qusmo could put away Juvencus in the Cup of Harmony 73 group stage, when Qusmo had already guaranteed advancement to the knockouts no matter the result; when they played Juvencus again in the semifinals, though - when it really mattered - they were defeated soundly.

Cralt-Nirlo was licking their lips at the opportunity. & an opportunity it would be. Rumour had it that Avarn-Oxolt needed a win against Saltstead on Matchday Nine to keep their job. They knew from practically every article they read, however, that Avarn-Oxolt had had thirteen opportunities to play top-thirty-two opposition in competitive matches before. Avarn-Oxolt looked closer into the numbers, & seven times - more than half - they had been unable to score. Qusmo had scored one goal four times & had scored two goals twice - & had never scored more than that. Cralt-Nirlo compared those records with Avarn-Oxolt’s competitive record against top-thirty-two teams: seven losses, four draws, & only two wins. It matched perfectly. & against Saltstead’s defense, the best in Group 11, what were the odds that Avarn-Oxolt could finally figure out how to run an offense?

So, once Avarn-Oxolt was sacked, who would Fuzpon Qusma turn to? Who would be their ideal candidate? Perhaps it would be a Qusmi, or at least someone who had managed in Pug Qusmyra & knew the player pool. Perhaps it would be someone who had experience with a national team setup, perhaps even as its manager. Perhaps it would be someone who could focus on resuscitating Qusmo’s struggling offense, & doing so by employing classic Qusma tactics would be even better yet. Perhaps it would be someone who had experience winning big matches against top-class opposition, like a three-nil win over Pasarga in World Cup Qualifying, or perhaps it would be someone who had experience leading a country to qualify for the World Cup or to achieve a nation’s first win in a World Cup match.

Cralt-Nirlo had been the first person Fuzpon Qusma had offered the job of Qusmo’s national team manager to. They hadn’t just been the first person Fuzpon Qusma had asked in their previous hiring process; they were the first person to ever get that offer. Cralt-Nirlo had turned them down then, but Fuzpon Qusma would surely come calling again, especially given what Cralt-Nirlo had achieved in the years since that first call. & perhaps, this time, they would say yes.

& if not, they could still stay in Rushmore by teaching Lev Repin & Mytanija how to really employ a deep-lying forward.

Yes, times were good for Cralt-Nirlo. They should talk to the board of Vermillion Rage now to get permission to manage both a national team & the club at the same time; the offers would surely be coming for Cralt-Nirlo.

& Cralt-Nirlo Fox would be ready when they did.

Thirty-two national teams shall play in each edition of the World Cup. Each World Cup shall be co-hosted by two nations, which shall automatically qualify for the World Cup. The thirty remaining teams shall be selected on the basis of their performance in World Cup Qualifying. World Cup Qualifying shall consist of a single double round robin group stage followed by a series of playoffs played on the basis of teams’ performances in prior qualifying rounds.

The teams to enter World Cup Qualifying shall be divided into sixteen groups of equal numbers. Each team shall play each other team within its group twice, including once in a match its representative football association shall host & once in a match its opponents’ respective representative football associations shall host. In no group stage match shall extra time or a penalty shootout be played. Three points shall be awarded for a win, one point shall be awarded for a draw, & no points shall be awarded for a loss.

Teams shall be ranked on the basis of points, with goal difference the first tiebreaker, followed by goals scored, then head-to-head record. After all scheduled matches have been played, a final ranking of each group shall be determined. The highest-ranked team in each group shall qualify to the World Cup. The second-highest-ranked team in each group shall advance to a Runners-Up Playoff. The third-highest-ranked team in each group shall be ranked amongst each other, & the first- through eighth-ranked teams which rank third-highest in each of their respective groups shall advance to an Elimination Playoff. All other teams which entered World Cup Qualifying shall be eliminated.

In each playoff, each team shall play against one other team. They shall play in two matches within a single playoff round, including once in a match its representative football association shall host & once in a match its opponent’s representative football association shall host. To determine playoff winners & playoff losers, teams shall be ranked on the basis of goals scored in the two matches played in the playoff, with away goals as a tiebreaker. Should the two teams be tied on both these criteria after the conclusion of the second match, an extra time period shall follow immediately thereafter, & the teams shall be ranked on the same criteria following the conclusion of extra time. Should the two teams still be tied on both these criteria after the conclusion of extra time, a penalty shootout shall be played, & the winner of this shootout shall win the playoff.

Sixteen teams shall play in the Runners-Up Playoff; the eight winners of their respective Runners-Up Playoffs shall qualify to the World Cup, & the eight losers of their respective Runners-Up Playoffs shall advance to the Final Playoff. Eight teams shall play in the Elimination Playoff; the four winners of their respective Elimination Playoffs shall advance to the Final Playoff, & the four losers of their respective Runners-Up Playoff shall be eliminated. Twelve teams shall play in the Final Playoff. Teams which were the third-highest-ranked in their respective groups shall not play another team which was third-highest-ranked in its respective group in the Final Playoff. The six winners of their respective Final Playoffs shall qualify to the World Cup, & the six losers of their respective Runners-Up Playoffs shall be eliminated.

Fuzpon Qusma proposes reforming & standardizing World Cup Qualifying

Fuzpon Qusma today announced sweeping changes to World Cup Qualifying which would improve World Cup Qualifying by extending an opportunity for in-form lower seeds & out-of-form higher seeds to qualify via a playoff while weighting group stage performance such that better performances are rewarded.

World Cup Qualifying would be split first into sixteen groups & then into a series of playoffs, with co-hosts getting two of the thirty-two spots available in the final tournament. Group winners would get the next sixteen, with fourteen more to be allocated via playoffs. First, group runners-up would play each other in the Runners-Up Playoff; the eight winners would qualify, while the eight losers would get a second chance in the Final Playoff. The top half of the third-place teams would play in a Elimination Playoff, with the four losers eliminated but the four winners advancing to the Final Playoff, where they would play group runners-up. The final six places in the World Cup would be allocated to the winners of this Final Playoff.

This new format being introduced by Fuzpon Qusma would combine the best of a group stage-only World Cup Qualifying format with a conventional playoff format featuring a group stage with the second- & third-place teams playing to qualify. Just like the playoff format, up to three teams from each group can be left in the tournament following the group stage; so, the pressure of a qualifying group of death can be alleviated by making it possible for three qualifiers to emerge from a single group, while weak groups could receive only one qualifier.

However, it will also ensure that group stage performance is strongly weighted. Group winners will have automatic spots in the World Cup. All group runners-up will get a spot in the playoff, needing only to win one of two playoff ties to advance. Teams which finish third in their groups will need to be among the top half of third place teams to be entered into a playoff & will have to win two consecutive playoff series, including one against a fellow third-place team & another against a second-place team.

This proposal would standardize all future World Cup Qualifying campaigns by creating opportunities for teams which are subjected to an especially difficult qualifying group to qualify & forcing teams from weaker groups to demonstrate their talent to qualify, all while providing significant incentives & rewards for teams to perform to their best in the group stages, ensuring every match of every stage has real value for teams which want to qualify for the World Cup & that we have the fairest World Cup Qualifying system which is feasibly possible. Fuzpon Qusma has submitted this proposal to the World Cup Committee for official consideration, & we look forward to its debate & eventual passage ...

Xilit-Xalan Den took off their glasses, looked down at their lap, & rubbed their temples. They sighed.

“Well?”

Den grasped for the right words. “Von - ” they paused, still searching. “What you have produced is… certainly very interesting-”

“Thank you, I-”

“I wasn’t finished, Von.” The two stared at each other for a few seconds. “Von, you’re nineteen years old. You’re an unpaid summer intern here. Someone who was your age when someone who was your age when someone who was your age when you were born had not even been conceived when the first World Cup Qualifying campaign happened. & you’re telling me that you think you know better than every person who’s ever come before you about how to do this?”

Dwada-Prant Von thought about this. “Yeah. I mean, you just have to look at the statement I’ve prepared to-”

“I’ve looked at the statement. I have to have read & reread that thing five times over. First off, I think this technology thing is broken. I clicked the ‘show more content’ button & it took away content; all that’s happened is that I can’t see that button & I can’t see two of the dots of the ellipsis in the end.”

“Yeah, so apparently our technology has a two thousand eight hundred automatic character limit, so it cut everything off after the two thousand eight hundredth character.”

“Okay, I get that, but it’s not showing me anything. What else did you write?”

“No, you’re seeing it. Look, let’s highlight all of this, & let’s word count it, & - yep, two thousand eighth hundred one characters precisely.”

Den looked at their computer silently for a moment. “You’re kidding, right?”

“No, I’m not.”

“So you’re saying that instead of one full stop, the programme put in three full stops, three extra words, & a button.”

“Well, technically, it was an ellipsis, not three full stops, & the three extra words were the button-”

“Great. Lovely. Thank you. Much appreciated.” Den sighed again.

“Are you alright?”

“What?”

“It’s just, you’re breathing a little heavily.”

“No, I’m not.”

“You know what? That’s a perfectly understandable reaction. You’re not in tune with your breathing, with your body. You know, I know a great meditation for beginners course that I think could really help you out, get yourself centred & calm. Hate to budge in, but whatever you’re going through seems pretty stressful; I think it could really help you out.”

Den bit their tongue & gripped the edge of their desk. “No, thank you. Could you give me a minute to think this proposal over?”

“Of course.” Von didn’t move from their seat, or even uncross their legs.

“Alone?”

“Oh, of course. Thank you for taking this into consideration; it’s exciting, isn’t it?”

“Quite.”

&, with that, Dwada-Prant Von finally, gloriously, left. “Margaret Almighty. A fixed number of groups? A two-stage, three-part playoff? The same qualifying format, mandated every single time? Are they trying to make Fuzpon Qusma the laughingstock of the Multiverse?” They heard the sound of a notification from their email. “Ah, Ucyxi-Upuln Zev. At least they’ve got a head squarely on their shoulders.” They opened the email & read the title of the proposed press release: Fuzpon Qusma proposes that all future World Cup Qualifiers use the Casaran system

I started work on a much better RP, but it’s not going to get done in time for cutoff today. That said, I’ve already missed so many days & am in such a simultaneously precarious & hopeful position that I need something. What do I mean by “simultaneously precarious & hopeful,” you ask? Well, ..

Cynav-Hynym Eva’s face was grim.

“Give it to me straight.” Avarn-Oxolt Ban needed to know in exactly what kind of a situation they were in, & they trusted Cynav-Hynym to tell them.

“Beginning with the easy part, we’re not going to catch Cosumar. They’re thirteen points ahead of us, & there’s only twelve points left to be had.”

“Yes, but there’s more than one spot available in Apox & Valanora.”

“Very true,” Cynav-Hynym conceded. “I’ll remind you of the four fixtures we have remaining: in Velestria, hosting Mattijana, hosting Alluersia, & in Saltstead.”

“Yes, I’m quite well aware.”

“I’ll remind you, also, that we only earned four points from those matches.”

“Yes, I recall quite clearly. That won’t do it. But both of those losses were away, & we’ll be hosting Mattijana & Vartugia. & we were able to beat Saltstead before; we can do it again.”

“Perhaps. I’d also remind you that Saltstead will have the same three opponents as we have over the next three matchdays, with the exception of Vartugia instead of Alluersia - so, a slightly easier schedule - before our teams face each other on the final day of qualifying.”

“Yes, that has to be important.”

“We’re currently fifth, on twenty points, four points behind Saltstead, with a ten-goal deficit in goal difference, too.”

“I realize. Can we get to what this means for us?”

“We’re going to play Saltstead on the final matchday, & that will be pivotal. If we lose that match, we’ll have to have made up seven points & at least twelve goals in goal difference in our next three matches to still qualify. That means that if Saltstead can manage one win, or if we lose a single match, in the next three matchdays, we would be eliminated with a loss - if we wouldn’t be by that point already.”

“Just what I wanted to hear.”

“I’m sure. A draw, of course, leaves us right where we are now: four points & ten goals adrift. Assuming we’d win our other three matches, Saltstead would have to earn at most five points - &, realistically, four - from their next three matches for that to be enough to provide the margin we need. Possible, but it’s unlikely that would happen. I’d certainly not want to be in the position that something as important as a World Cup Qualification place rests on Saltstead doing that.”

“You wouldn’t want anything riding on anyone else doing anything. But, yes, that would be a risky gamble. We need a win on Matchday Eighteen.”

“Correction: you need a win every matchday. Saltstead would beat Vartugia, of course; they only have one win, & three results of any kind, in fourteen matches. & one of them, might I remind you -”

“No, you needn’t do that; I’m well aware.” Avarn-Oxolt scowled at the thought of the fact that Qusmo had been one of those three results; had Qusmo been able to score, they would have been two points better off. They might have been in control of their own destiny. Perhaps they wouldn’t have had to have this conversation. Avarn-Oxolt pushed that out of their mind. “What’s Saltstead look like now?”

“Let’s chalk up three points for Saltstead now. Now, they could only earn one point against either Velestria or Mattijana. That means that one of those teams - or both - will earn three points against Saltstead. Remember, Mattijana is only one point behind us, & Velestria is only one point behind them. If they beat Saltstead & us, even if we can still get past Saltstead, they will overtake us.”

“Okay. Alright.” Avarn-Oxolt processed this information. “So, we need four wins in our last four matches. Let’s say we do. What happens then?”

“Yes, that’s the best-case scenario. But over the next four matchdays, there will be sixteen matches in Group 11 that we cannot control, which could change things dramatically. Let’s start with the worst-case best-case scenario.”

“Lovely.”

Cynav-Hynym ignored them. “Let’s say we earn all twelve points we can. That puts us at thirty-two. Precisely where Qusmo stood at the end of the last cycle. & did we qualify then?”

“It’s a new cycle. Let’s move on, please.”

“As you wish. Saltstead would, of course, not be able to win all four of its matches - but they could still win three. That would put them at thirty-three. That’s more than Qusmo could have. It’s out of Qusmo’s hands; by Matchday Eighteen, they could be eliminated, even if they have a perfect run of form until then.”

“Alright. But Saltstead just needs to drop one point, right?”

“Right. If Velestria or Mattijana - or, technically, Vartugia - can draw or win against Saltstead, Qusmo still has a chance.”

“Good. We can still make it.” Avarn-Oxolt began to stand up.

“Don’t go just so quickly, Ban,” Cynav-Hynym cautioned. “There’s more.”

“Oh, of course. What is it this time?”

“I think you’re forgetting something: we’re only in fifth place. Saltstead’s not the only team we have to hurdle to qualify. Kavagrad sits level on points but ten goals ahead on difference, while Sajnur stands only five goals ahead on difference but three points ahead of us.”

“Neither of them will qualify,” Avarn-Oxolt responded.

“Will they, now? Let’s look at that best-case scenario again. We finish on thirty-two, Saltstead finishes on thirty-one or less. Where does that leave Sajnur? Where is Kavagrad? We’ve played both of those teams twice before; we can’t take points away from them. Even if we win all four of our matches, so can they.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”

“It’s not insurmountable. Kavagrad has yet to visit Mytanija. & on Matchday Seven, they’ll be hosting Cosumar.”

“Okay. One of those should take some points away. Especially Cosumar. Good. But that leaves Sajnur. What have they got left?”

“Well, Sajnur has some difficult opponents left to play - like us, they still need to play Alluersia, Velestria, & Mattijana. They’re capable of taking points away. Most of all, though -” Cynav-Hynym paused.

“Spit it out; now’s not the time for dramatics.”

“Sajnur still has yet to visit Ramusok.”

“Margaret, Eva, why didn’t you tell me that before?”

“We need to go through all the scenarios.”

“Alright. So, what you’re telling me is that we still have a chance?”

“If we win all four of our remaining matches, it’s very plausible that we qualify for the World Cup. But things still have to go our way, & we still have to win all four of those matches.”

“Well,” Avarn-Oxolt sighed, “looks like it’s time to get to work.”

This RP is long enough already, & I don’t want to risk getting surprised by the cutoff again; I’ll submit Part I now &, hopefully, have Part II done for tomorrow. The main character has appeared once before. That RP & this RP from Saltstead comprise the context of this RP.

Dwada-Prant Von stepped out of the cab, gazing in awe at what stood before them.

They had been released from their internship at Fuzpon Qusma, but they needed that job. If it was gone for good - Von shuddered & put it out of their mind. They looked back up & saw the building staring back at them.

“The Arena la Rouge.” Von began walking, confidently, towards the stadium. “This is where I’ll find the United Republican Soccer Federation. This is where I’ll set everything -”

“Why, hello, there!” cried a burly passerby of about forty, sporting a sizable paunch. “How are you?”

“I’m quite well, thank you.”

“Say - don’t seem to be from around here. You a visitor, mind my asking?”

“I’m actually from Qusmo. I’m a representative from Fuzpon Qusma - well,”

“Qusmo, eh? & Fuzpon Qusma your soccer organization, I’m guessing, from your being at the Arena la Rouge?”

“Yes, in fact, I -”

“Well, mighty glad to have you here in Philibiscostal, mate. Recommend, though, you see the RS Amphitheatre. In Port-des-Saints, got a great atmosphere, lovely place. Where Omerica first hosted Qusmo. Consider myself a bit of a footballing historian, so I know my stuff. Should really check that out. Meantime, though, I own a pub over on the corner; can have a drink with us while you’re here, if you like.”

“Oh, no; I’m here to work, not drink.”

“Suit yourself. Cheers!”

“Wait a moment!” Von called. “The national team plays at the RS Amphitheatre, in the capital?”

“Course! Great place.”

“Well, thank you; I appreciate your help.”

“No problem, mate! Swing by sometime; love to share a drink with you when you’re off the clock!”

Von gathered their things & looked for another cab to hail.

Dwada-Prant Von stepped out of the cab, gazing in awe at what stood before them.

They had been released from their internship at Fuzpon Qusma, but they needed that job. If their friends back home came to think that Von wasn’t really what they were all cracked up to be - Von shuddered & put it out of their mind. They looked back up & saw the building staring back at them.

“The RS Amphitheatre.” Von began walking, confidently, towards the stadium. “This is where I’ll find the United Republican Soccer Federation. This is where I’ll set everything -”

“Excuse me! Sir? Ma’am? I don’t know? Person?” asked someone dressed in flannel, sipping a coffee, who looked to be a college student. “Um, sorry; are you one of those Qusmi?”

“Yes, I’m one of ‘those Qusmi’y.’”

“Oh, I’m very sorry; there are so many nations in the Multiverse, & with my classes, it’s just hard to keep them all straight.”

“I’m sure.”

“Anyways, welcome to Port-des-Saints! What brings you here?”

“Are you sure? This is where Qusmo - I’m a representative from Fuzpon Qusma - well, not exactly a representative - I was -”

“Oh, you’re one of those footballers? Very nice! I wouldn’t have taken you for an athlete; I guess you Qusmi’y - Qusmi’y? - must be different than us. I mean, not in that kind of way, it’s just that you’re so lanky & don’t really look like a typical athlete from Omerica, not that you’re any different from an Omerican, of course.” Von began to turn away. “Wait! I’m sorry; sometimes I don’t say what I mean, I mean, I mean what I say, but I don’t really mean it, I mean, I misspeak. I’ll make it up to you, though; I want to be of some help. What are you looking for?”

“I’m looking for where Qusmo defeated Omerica for the fourth time in succession, marking the point at which -”

“Oh, really? I didn’t realize we had played each other that many times before. That’s interesting. Anyways, the only match I remember between Qusmo & Omerica wasn’t here; it was in Londonderry, at Londonderry Court. I’m very sorry.”

“Are you sure that’s where to go? This is such a magnificent stadium, & it’s in the capital city, & it was where Qusmo last played -”

“No, I’m sorry, but I remember that Qusmo played Omerica in Londonderry. It was a friendly, to help Omerica prepare for the World Cup 82 Qualifiers. Which, I guess, was probably the point for Qusmo, too. I certainly know we haven’t played Qusmo during World Cup Qualifiers; we haven’t played Qusmo any time since. If Qusmo really has beaten Omerica four times - oh, well, I’m sure they have, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to imply they didn’t, I’m sorry, well, what I meant to say was, the fourth time Qusmo has beaten Omerica, sorry, was at Londonderry Court. Maybe you should look there. I mean, only if you want to, of course; I don’t want to impose or order you or tell you what to do or anything; I’m sorry.”

Von took a moment to think about this. “So, I should go to Londonderry Court, in Londonderry?”

“Well, yes, but, no, I mean, only if you want to, of course, so it’s up to you.”

“Alright. Thank you; I appreciate your help.”

“Oh, well, thank you, I mean, of course, I mean, not of course, it’s not obvious, some people might not be so nice, I mean, not to say that I’m nicer than anyone else, I mean, it’s no problem for me, I mean, maybe not, but it’s nothing you need to worry about it, I mean, you’re welcome.”

Von gathered their things & looked for another cab to hail.

Dwada-Prant Von stepped out of the cab, gazing in awe at what stood before them.

They had been released from their internship at Fuzpon Qusma, but they needed that job. If they didn’t get the boost of working for Fuzpon Qusma - Von shuddered & put it out of their mind. They looked back up & saw the building staring back at them.

“Londonderry Court.” Von began walking, still confidently, towards the stadium. “This is where I’ll find the United Republican Soccer Federation. This is where I’ll set everything -”

“Yo! What’s happening, bruv?” yelled someone who looked to be a teenager, who skidding to a stop on their skateboard.

“I’m a representative from Fuzpon Qusma - well, not exactly a representative - I was fired, you see - well,”

“Cool story, bruv. What brings you out here to Londonderry? You looking for the URSF?”

“Why, yes, as a matter of fact, I -”

“Cool, but this ain’t it, bruv. You gotta go all the way to Philibiscostal to meet those guys.”

“Are you sure? I was just in Philibis-”

“Listen, bruv, I ain’t got all day. You want to meet the URSF, you go to Philibiscostal, & you look for the Crown Jewel. You got that?”

“Yes. Thank you; I appreciate your help.”

“Cool. Later, bruv.”

Von gathered their things & looked for another cab to hail.

Dwada-Prant Von stepped out of the cab, gazing in awe at what stood before them.

They had been released from their internship at Fuzpon Qusma, but they needed that job. If it they weren’t able to work for Fuzpon Qusma as part of a real job in the future - Von shuddered & put it out of their mind. They looked back up & saw the building staring back at them.

“The Arena la Rouge.” Von began walking, confidently, towards the stadium. “This is where I’ll find the United Republican Soccer Federation. This is where I’ll set everything - Wait a moment. This is the same building I visited when I first started my search. That kid told me to visit the Crown Jewel, not the Arena la Rouge.”

“Why, hello, there!” It was the same burly bystander who had led them away from Philibiscostal in the first place, this time trapping Von in a big bear hug. “How’ve you been?”

“Not well, actually,” Von responded, tersely.

“What?” they broke the hug & looked straight into Von’s eyes. “Ever’s the matter?”

“I have been to Philibiscostal. I have been to Port-des-Saints. I have been to Londonderry. & now I have returned to Philibiscostal.”

“Say that’s bad? Lovely cities, all of them. Hope you had a great time while you were visiting.”

“I am not here to sightsee.”

“Here to share some stories over a pint?”

“I am here to do no such thing. I am in Philibiscostal - & I have been in Londonderry before that, & Port-des-Saints before that, & Philibiscostal for my first time before that - on purely business matters.”

“That what it was? Forget sometimes; mind telling me again?”

“Are you sure? This is where Qusmo - I’m a representative from Fuzpon Qusma - well, not exactly a representative - I was fired, you see - well, not fired - really, I -”

“Working for the soccer association, & looking for soccer stadiums; didn’t you find what you’re looking for?”

“No, I did not; that is why I am here now.”

“See the RS Amphitheatre?”

“I did.”

“See Londonderry Court?”

“I did.”

“& clearly seen the Crown Jewel, of course.”

“Excuse me?”

“Crown Jewel: most famous stadium in all of Omerica. Temple of Omerican soccer.”

“That is precisely the stadium I am looking for now. Do you know where I could find it?”

“Course, just the same as any Omerican.”

“So where is it?”

“Standing right in front of you.”

Von looked at this burly stranger incredulously. “But this is the Arena la Rouge.”

The burly stranger guffawed. “Don’t know? All your connections in that soccer association of yours? Don’t know that the Crown Jewel is just another name for the Arena la Rouge?”

Von stared, slackjawed. “You are kidding, right?”

“Course not. Never do that to a pal. Not if they aren’t having a glass with me.”

“Alright. So this is the famous Crown Jewel I have heard about?”

“Course it is.”

“& it’s Omerica’s national stadium?”

“Close to it as we have, I’d figure.”

“For football?”

“No, not for football; just soccer.”

Von narrowed their eyes at this stranger. “Are you entirely, completely sure?”

“Wouldn’t I be?”

“So this is where I should go for a meeting with the United Republican Soccer Federation?”

“Oh, course not!”

“Excuse me?”

“No! The URSF offices are near here, but they aren’t actually in the stadium. National team has its own place.”

“Why didn’t you say that before?”

“Should’ve said something, like, ‘This is where I’ll find the United Republican Soccer Federation.’ Gotta be clearer, lad; it’s alright, just a miscommunication.”

“Just a miscommunication? Do you realize how much I’ve been through already? How much I’ve had to put up with?”

“Sounds too bad. Got the right place now, though.”

Von sighed. “I certainly hope that I do. How do I get from here to the URSF offices?”

“Have to go to the Federal House of Football. Here, in town; can’t miss it. Can help you get there, if you’d like.”

“No, thank you; I appreciate your help.”

“Suit yourself. Hope you find what you’re looking for - & feel free to swing by my pub once you have!”

Von gathered their things & looked for another cab to hail.

Continued from Part I. A recent RP from Omerica also serves as very good context. This is much shorter than I had intended because I’m about to fly across the country tomorrow & have to get my things in order; there’s still more left in this one.

Dwada-Prant Von stepped out of the cab, gazing in awe at what stood before them.

They had been released from their internship at Fuzpon Qusma, but they needed that job. If they weren’t able to count on the salary they had been expecting - Von shuddered & put it out of their mind. They looked back up & saw the building staring back at them.

“The Arena la Rouge.” Von began walking, confidently, towards the stadium. “This is where I’ll find the United Republican Soccer Federation. This is where I’ll set everything -”

“Hello, dear.” The person who looked up to greet Von had grey hair & wore glasses with large round frames. “What can I do for you?”

“Hello. I’m a representative from Fuzpon Qusma - well, not exactly a representative - I was fired, you see - well, not fired - really, I was dismissed from Fuzpon Qusma, & -”

“Slow down, honey. Have a seat. You looking for someone in particular?”

“Yes; I would like to meet the President of the United Republican Soccer Federation. I have a very important matter to discuss.”

“Oh, really? Well, sweetie, I’m sorry, but I’m afraid you’ve just missed Casimir; I think he’s gone for the night. He said something about having a drink. Is there a message I can pass along to him for you?”

“Well, it is a bit of an extraordinary request.”

“Go on; I’ll help if I can.”

“Alright. I have received word that a provision in the Omerican constitution allows for a nation to claim land from Omerica if they win four football matches against Omerica in succession - a feat that my home of Qusmo has recently achieved. I am here to claim the Republic of the Seafoam Islands on behalf of the State of Qusmo.”

“Oh, dear. That really is a very serious matter. Now, I have to admit that I don’t know the constitution as well as I should, but I don’t remember any clause like that being in there. I suppose everyone’s looking at constitutions now, with the vote of no confidence against Anne-Sophie & all; maybe someone did find something. & maybe it’s for the best that the Seafoam Islands would go; just seeing what Casimir has to go through every day now gives me a headache. But I think that a clause like that would be in the country’s constitution, not the country’s football association’s constitution.”

“I see.”

“You’re disappointed; I know, hun, it can be tough sometimes. But you’ll make it through. Here: if you head on over to the Palace of the Federation in Port-des-Saints, I’m sure you’ll have better luck there.”

“I certainly hope so. Thank you; I appreciate your help.”

“Anytime, hun; I hope things work out for you.”

Von gathered their things & looked for another cab to hail.

This is, of course, a continuation of the Dwada-Prant Von saga. If you’re at all concerned with strong language, there’s a bit of it in the first section of this RP. For your context, here are links to:
Also, it seems the very user I’m collaborating with & I will play each other for a ticket to Valanora & Apox. I’m excited to see how things turn out; I’m sure it will be a fantastic match.

Dwada-Prant Von stepped out of the cab, gazing in awe at what stood before them.

They had been released from their internship at Fuzpon Qusma, but they needed that job. If they couldn’t one day fulfill their dreams of becoming president of Fuzpon Qusma for themself - Von shuddered & put it out of their mind. They looked back up & saw the building staring back at them.

“The Palace of the Federation.” Von began walking, confidently, towards the stadium. “This is where I’ll find the Omerican parliament. This is where I’ll set everything -”

“Who are you?” The question, from a stern-looking young person of about twenty or so, startled Von.

“I’m a representative from Fuzpon Qusma - well, not exactly a representative - I was fired, you see - well, not fired - really, I was dismissed early - though -”

“I’m sorry,” the person interrupted. “Do I look like I give a fuck?”

Von was taken aback; they didn’t know how to respond. “Not particularly, I would suppose, no.”

“Well, then, will you tell me what you need, or do you want to keep wasting my fucking time?”

“Why don’t you go ahead & proclaim yourself President of Omerica while you’re at it, too? Listen, bud, I’ve had to know this fucking constitution inside & out, better than the back of my fucking hand, & I can assure you that there’s absolutely nothing in there that’s remotely like what you’re talking about. Anything else, or can I go?”

“Wait a moment; are you entirely sure? I have this information on credible sourcing.”

“I don’t care where the fuck you get your sources; they’re wrong.”

“But-”

“Listen, I still don’t give a fuck, so if you want to waste someone’s time, do it somewhere else. I’m sure the Federal Ministry of Defense Headquarters would be delighted to deal with you. After all, if you’re planning to annex an entire republic, you had better fucking bet that the military’s going to get involved sooner rather than later.”

“That makes sense, I suppose. Thank you; I appreciate your help.”

The person Von had been talking to walked away without responding - though Von thought they could hear them muttering something under their breath. It seemed to be something about ducks & ducking, though perhaps they had misheard.

Von gathered their things & looked for another cab to hail.

Dwada-Prant Von stepped out of the cab, gazing in awe at what stood before them.

They had been released from their internship at Fuzpon Qusma, but they needed that job. If they had to go back home & admit they they had failed - Von shuddered & put it out of their mind. They looked back up & saw the building staring back at them.

“The Federal Ministry of Defense Headquarters.” Von began walking, confidently, towards the stadium. “This is where I’ll find someone who can help me. This is where I’ll set everything -”

“Halt!” A voice boomed at them, but Von couldn’t quite make out who was speaking; it seemed to be a loudspeaker of some sort - in two ways. “Suspect, identity yourself!”

“Dwada-Prant Von, of Qusmo!”

“State intentions!”

“I’m a representative from Fuzpon Qusma - well, not exactly a representative - I was fired, you see - well, not fired - really, I was dismissed early - though I am hoping that I am doing now will help me regain my job - I - ”

“Suspect, are you armed?”

“No, I am not.”

“Purpose in Omerica?”

After the rapid pace of questioning, there was a silence for a few moments. As it grew longer, Von became more & more uncomfortable; they finally began to realize where they were & how their intentions might be misconstrued - & they began to imagine what might happen to them if that were the case. Perhaps they were readying to capture Von now. Finally, though, a single middle-aged person stepped out of the shadows. They sported a crew cut & a face chiseled with rectangles & right angles, with nary a curve in sight.

“Son, do you realize that what you’re planning to do is an unimaginably flagrant violation of Omerican law?”

“No, I -”

“Well, it is. & I suggest you get yourself an Omerican attorney, because simply conspiring to overthrow the government of any one of our republics is a serious offense, which we will not & will never tolerate.”

“But I was just -”

“I don’t care. Come with me. You’ve got two options, son: either come with me willingly or be forced to come here. It’s up to you.”

At that moment, a younger person, wearing the same uniform & haircut appeared. “Sir, we have a call.”

“I don’t care, lieutenant. This is what we’re dealing with now.”

“Sir,” the lieutenant continued. “It’s from Mike.”

The rectangularly-shaped Omerican looked stunned. After a pause, they responded. “Bring me the phone.” They then spoke to Von. “Today might be your lucky day.”

Von wished they could simply gather their things & look for another cab to hail.

Ilinx-Kepex Zev would never admit it, but they were tired.

The thirty-four-year-old captain of Qusmo’s national team - who had been named Fuzpon Qusma Player of the Season in every year of Pug Qusmyra’s existence, who had twice captained KF Qastyr to the quarterfinals of the UICA Champions’ Cup, who was playing for their country for the ninety-first time, who had played in all seventy-three competitive matches Qusmo had ever been a part of, who had never stepped onto a pitch in their professional & international careers without wearing a captain’s armband - was beginning to feel the strain of all they had been put through.

World Cup Qualifying was always a long campaign, & this was no different. In fact, in some ways, it was even more intensive than usual. This was the campaign following Qusmo’s third-place group finish in their last World Cup Qualifiers. This was the campaign following their third-place finish in the Cup of Harmony. This was the campaign where people had expectations for Qusmo. This was the campaign where the goal was nothing short of a World Cup.

Qusmo, however, had struggled. For a string of ten matchdays - from Qusmo’s three-one loss to Cosumar in Qanz through their four-one loss to Cosumar in Ramusok - Qusmo only earned eight points in total, with two wins, two draws, & six losses. That, clearly, would not do. Rumours swirled that Avarn-Oxolt Ban, the manager of the national team, might be sacked - completely uncharacteristic for the normally patient, level-headed nation. Something had to be done.

Ilinx-Kepex pushed that out of their mind for now. Saltstead had a corner kick, & it was the most important set piece of Ilinx-Kepex’s career - or, indeed, any of the Qusmi’y on the pitch. After what felt like an eternity in which Qusmo had constantly attacked but Saltstead had frustrated them again & again, Ilinx-Kepex had finally given their side a one-nil lead in the eighty-second minute which could send Qusmo to their first World Cup; if Saltstead could equalize, however, it would be they would go instead. After eighteen matchdays & ninety matches played in Group 11, every player’s dream would be realized or dashed by a single corner kick. Every player, every member of the coaching staff, every one of the 77 000 in the capacity-level attendance at King William VII National Park, & every football fan watching from across the Multiverse - & especially in Qusmo & Saltstead - knew that.

On television, radio, & live streams elsewhere, announcers were surely trying to heighten the suspense, but there was no need. The din in the stadium was unlike anything Ilinx-Kepex had ever experienced before. Valeriė Rotsħeud, the Saltsteadish goalkeeper, made the trek from their goal to Qusmo’s, as Gay Ware did anything they could to generate a chance to save their own job as manager of Saltstead’s national team. While they waited for the player in gold to make their way to the box, Saltstead’s ten outfielders huddled together, determining their strategy for this last, vital corner. The Qusmi’y knew what to do; they were left with this time to think - about their own strategy & marking assignments, perhaps, but also about the magnitude of the moment - & how quickly it could all slip away - & all the ways things could go wrong -

“Everyone!” Ilinx-Kepex barked. If they were falling into that state of mental torment, they knew their teammates were, too. “I know what the score is. I know what the stakes are. We all do. But we know exactly what we need to do. Each of us has a job. Each of us has a role, a responsibility. All we have to do is execute. If we stick to our jobs, we can clear this ball. & if we clear it out of danger, that’s all we need to do. That’s all we need to do. So, let’s do it.”

As Ilinx-Kepex broke the loose huddle of Qusmi’y, the Stallions got into position. Every black-&-white hoop met a white shirt with a red-&-gold sash. The Stallions jostled for space now that their defenders had begun marking, & the Qusmi’y jockied for position now that they had begun marking. Everything was set. Suddenly, Ilinx-Kepex was sure they could hear a pin drop from the top row of seats.

Then, just as suddenly, noise.

Ann-Marine Crabshaas took two steps & launched the ball towards the box, towards the far side. Ilinx-Kepex suddenly realized: Rotsħeud was unmarked. Qusmo had meticulously planned for precisely this kind of moment, but they had never considered the possibility that the goalkeeper, too, might be arriving for the corner. Ilinx-Kepex suddenly bolted from their assignment, hurtling themselves towards the ball & -

Ilinx-Kepex got to it first! They did it! They saved Qusmo! But, no, wait - the ball was loose. Ilinx-Kepex still had to close it out, until the final three whistles blew, lest it all go to waste. Ilinx-Kepex sprinted after the ball, knowing that if they got there first, they would win. They would qualify for the World Cup. They could see Emmet le Duc, however, closing in, too, surely knowing precisely the same as Ilinx-Kepex. Le Duc came closer & closer, but Ilinx-Kepex had slowed over the course of the match; they weren’t sure if they could make it. But at that moment, Ilinx-Kepex found one final burst of speed. This was the World Cup they were after. If they could only tolerate a few more seconds of pain, they would have a lifetime of glory. &, so, it was Ilinx-Kepex’s boot that met the ball first.

Ilinx-Kepex was ready to celebrate - but the referee hadn’t stopped play. The ball was cleared; shouldn’t the match be over? Ilinx-Kepex looked over at the fourth official. They had added two additional minutes. The time it took to set up the corner must have prolonged the end of the match; they must not have been able to hear the announcement amidst the noise of the crowd. They had to put in another one hundred twenty seconds, then. Ilinx-Kepex kept sprinting, towards the ball, now bouncing in the centre of the pitch. The other twenty-one didn’t seem to realize it, though; the Saltsteaders started to bury their heads in their shirts or their hands, while the Qusmi’y looked as though they had begun celebrating.

“I’ll take it myself, then,” thought Ilinx-Kepex. &, so, they kept running - but as they did, the others began to realize what was happening. There were a final few seconds left on the board. Ilinx-Kepex caught up to the ball, but by that time, the entire Saltsteadish team had begun to track back as fast as they possibly could, trying desperately to salvage something.

Ilinx-Kepex’s legs felt like lead, they could barely lift them, but they had to. They had to keep moving. They had to. &, so, they kept running - not as fast as they could have at their peak, & not as fast as the hosts who were frantically following, but as fast as they possibly could. &, so, Ilinx-Kepex got closer, & closer, & closer to the goal - but the Stallions got closer & closer & closer to them. Ilinx-Kepex urged themself on. This would do it. This would put them in the World Cup. Ilinx-Kepex finally reached the eighteen-yard box, & then the six-yard box, & they still hadn’t been reached. Finally, Martin Wissen, desperately, tried to lunge, & Ilinx-Kepex was tripped. But it was of no consequence. The ball kept rolling, & it rolled all the way into the goal.

Ilinx-Kepex stayed on the grass. They didn’t move. Not long thereafter, they felt bodies plow into them - white shirts, with red-&-gold sashes, & with that sun. That beautiful sun. & now, Ilinx-Kepex would get to play on the grandest stage of all: the World Cup. Ilinx-Kepex began to cry. Not of the pain; they couldn’t feel that anymore. They cried because, after working for so hard, for so long, they had finally achieved what they had so desperately wanted.

They cried because, finally, it was all over. They cried because, after so long, it had only just begun.

SPONY LUQ TELEVISION

Hello, all. Welcome to Spony Luq Television, broadcasting from Qanz, Qusmo. After a hard-fought qualification process in which Qusmo needed every point they earned, Qusmo has qualified for a World Cup for the first time. Qusmo battled back from eighth place in Group 11 with just five matchdays to go to earn second & an automatic qualification place to World Cup 82. Now, they find themselves in a group with Brenecia, Turori, & Darmen &, having beaten Darmen, Qusmo could secure an historic knockout round appearance with a final matchday win over Brenecia. With that, let’s get to our first question, from a Qad viewer in T.V. City, Qasden.
Wait - did Qusmo not have any friendlies?

In fact, Qusmo had just one. Fuzpon Qusma has built a bit of a reputation for scheduling quite a few friendlies, but instead of its typical three-match March to the Cup friendly series that it scheduled before the last Cup of Harmony, Qusmo played only in one friendly before their first-ever World Cup. The name of the match might help explain why: the Centennial Celebration. This was Qusmo’s ninety-ninth match, making its first-ever match in the World Cup - a win over regionmates Darmen, to boot - the hundredth match Qusmo’s national team has ever played.

The team selected was very specific, as well. For their ninety-ninth match, Fuzpon Qusma recreated, in many ways, Qusmo’s first-ever match. Qusmo made its international debut in World Cup 80 Qualifying, & their first match was against Wolves Clans at Mastad Qusma in Qanz. So, Fuzpon Qusma invited Wolves Clans back for a friendly at Mastad Qusma in Qanz.

One thing was different, however: the score. While Qusmo defeated Wolves Clans one-nil both times they played in World Cup 80 Qualifying, Qusmo raced out to a six-two victory in this match, equalling the largest margin of victory Qusmo has ever achieved, alongside four-nil victories visiting Beepee & Axuva on the second matchday of World Cup 80 Qualifying & World Cup 81 Qualifying, respectively.

Fuzpon Qusma scheduled significantly fewer friendlies in this window than in previous ones because there was simply less need. For the first time, manager Avarn-Oxolt Ban employed precisely the same twenty-five-player roster throughout the entire qualification process; there was no doubt, then, who would make the roster once the team arrived in Valanora. Though Avarn-Oxolt made many changes over the course of the qualification campaign, too, they used the same Starting XI in each of Qusmo’s final five matches, when Qusmo won four of five to scramble from eighth to second & clinch qualification. That would clearly be the team to take the pitch at the Angelotic Temple against Darmen.

While Wolves Clans have not been widely seen since World Cup 80 Qualification, Qusmo has begun to make a name for itself, with qualification for the World Cup their crowning achievement thus far. Though the teams were in adjacent pots in World Cup 80 Qualifying - two hundred fifty-sixth-ranked Wolves Clans in Pot 8 & unranked Qusmo in Pot 9 - they have now become quite separated, & a clear gulf in class was evident. Qusmo’s attack, at times beleaguered, lit up in a way it has not since Qusmo’s six-three away win over Eastfield Lodge in World Cup 81 Qualification.

Most of Qusmo’s big victories, however, have come away from Qusmo. Qusmo’s two previous four-goal wins each were in away fixtures, as was the only previous time Qusmo has managed to score six goals in a single match - & the match in which Qusmo qualified for their first-ever World Cup. The home supporters were able to enjoy this match to the fullest, in part because of the result, & in part because they were able to see it for themselves in their home stadium.

Of course, a friendly match isn’t on the minds of most Qusmi’y now; let’s get to our next question, from a Turorian viewer in Gladerial, Valanora.
Turori wrote:It is not known the last time a team advance to the World Cup Finals without the aid of a playoff while also having suffered seven defeats in qualification.

We were curious, too, so we did some research. Here’s what we found.

First, let’s look at just how statistically extraordinary Qusmo’s qualification was, on a variety of fronts. Of course, as has been highlighted before by our viewer, Qusmo lost seven times over the course of qualification - including six times in a ten-match span, which saw Qusmo earn only eight points. That means that in over a third of the matches Qusmo played, they lost. Qusmo was able to recover by having very few draws &, instead, earning all three points in all but one of their matches outside that span.

However, the sheer amount of losses isn’t the only statistic to find here. Thanks to being in one of the most difficult groups in which to go through, in which there was a clear frontrunner in Cosumar but eight other teams were all very serious threats, Qusmo was able to qualify with only twenty-nine points. That is just short of five points taken every three matches: a good figure, but not usually good enough to qualify for the most prestigious sporting event in the Multiverse.

However, the statistic that perhaps most confounds common sense is that Qusmo was able to qualify with a negative goal differential. Thanks to large margins when they lost & small margins of victory, the team conceded two more goals over the course of the eighteen-match campaign than they scored, yet they still managed to not only finish in the top half of the table but qualify for the World Cup.

How historic is this? Well, let’s run the numbers. We looked at all thirty-six World Cup Qualification processes in the modern era - since World Cup 47 Qualifying - to determine which other campaigns had seen nations qualify, or at least advance to a playoff (or interzonal phase, in the case of World Cup 54 Qualifying), with one of four criteria applied specifically within the group stage: they earned less than 1.66 points per match; they had a negative goal differential; they lost more than a third of their matches; or, of course, they lost at least seven matches. Let’s start with the most important statistic of all in any World Cup Committee-sanctioned event: points.

Here are the minimum numbers of points with which teams qualified automatically or qualified by any means throughout the past ten editions of World Cup Qualifying.

WCQ Automatic Qualifiers Points All Qualifiers Points Matches
WC82Q Qusmo 29 Qusmo 29 18
WC81Q Valanora 41 Saltstead 37 18
WC80Q Cosumar 36 Abanhfleft 29 18
WC79Q 95X 35 95X 35 18
WC78Q Starblaydia & Osarius 32 Starblaydia & Osarius 32 16
WC77Q Osarius 36 Osarius 36 18
WC76Q Savalen 25 Chiata 23 12
WC75Q Matthewsiania 21 Pridenestrovia 18 12
WC74Q San Llera 25 Banguela 22 12
WC73Q Barunia & Free Republics & Schottia 26 Krytenia & Abanhfleft 23 12

Looking at this list, we see that Abanhfleft was able to qualify with just twenty-nine points from eighteen matches, too, & only two cycles ago. Going back further, in World Cup 75 Qualifying, Pridenestrovia managed to qualify with only eighteen points from twelve matches - the only team to manage to qualify with just a point & a half per match or fewer on average in the last ten cycles. However, neither Abanhfleft nor Pridnestrovia qualified automatically during those campaigns; we’ll have to go back further to see that. In the meantime, let’s see how Qusmo stacks up with regard to point differential.

WCQ Automatic Qualifiers Goal Diff. All Qualifiers Goal Diff. Matches
WC82Q Qusmo -2 Qusmo -2 18
WC81Q Ko-oren +20 Nova Anglicana +18 18
WC80Q Electrum & Darmen +18 Juvencus +7 18
WC79Q Kita-Hinode +8 Kita-Hinode +8 18
WC78Q Sargossa & Super-Llamaland +12 Sargossa & Super-Llamaland +12 16
WC77Q Electrum +13 Electrum +13 18
WC76Q Gregoryisgodistan +8 Gregoryisgodistan +8 12
WC75Q Matthewsiana & Abanhfleft +7 Pridenestrovia ±0 12
WC74Q Schottia +11 Banguela & Gregoryisgodistan +8 12
WC73Q Schottia & Vilita +14 Equestrian States +9 12

With this list, we see that Qusmo is unique among automatic qualifiers over the past ten cycles for not having achieved a positive goal differential in qualifying; indeed, no other nation in the past ten cycles has qualified through any means with a negative goal differential, with Pridenestrovia’s World Cup 75 Qualifying campaign again coming closest, having scored precisely the same number of goals as they conceded over the course of qualification. We still have to go back further to see a true parallel, however. Before we get to that, let’s look at the maximum number of losses each qualifier & automatic qualifier has been able to take & still qualify, per cycle, for the past ten.

WCQ Automatic Qualifiers Losses All Qualifiers Losses Matches
WC82Q Qusmo 7 Qusmo 7 18
WC81Q Valanora & Ko-oren & Mercedini 3 Nova Anglicana 4 18
WC80Q Cosumar 4 Abanhfleft 7 18
WC79Q Starblaydia & Kita-Hinode 4 Starblaydia & Kita-Hinode 4 18
WC78Q Starblaydia & Osarius & Ethane 4 Starblaydia & Osarius & Ethane 4 16
WC77Q Semarland 4 Semarland 4 18

Now, we see that seven losses is quite many for a World Cup qualifier. In the past ten cycles, it has only been achieved by Abanhfleft in World Cup 80 Qualification, but that was achieved only through a playoff, not quite answering our viewer’s question. Of course, part of the fact that Qusmo lost so much yet was able to qualify automatically is the fact that eighteen matches were played; expanding our analysis out to nations which qualified for the World Cup in the last ten cycles despite losing more than a third of their qualifying matches, we see that Bonesea & Abanhfleft managed just this in World Cup 75 Qualifying, with five losses in twelve matches. Still, this, too, required a playoff. We need to look back farther to see an automatic qualifier.

So, our research team at Spony Luq Television looked through the records of every World Cup Qualifying campaign in the modern era. That adds up to thirty-six qualifying campaigns, dating back to World Cup 47 Qualifying. What we found puts Qusmo’s qualification process into perspective. Let’s take a look.

First, let’s look at points. We already know that Qusmo qualified automatically just this cycle with fewer than five points per match; with twenty-nine points in eighteen matches, that comes out to 1.611 points per match. Let’s put that into perspective, looking at every team to not be eliminated - advancing to either a playoff or interzonal phase, or qualifying for the World Cup itself, until we reach our first qualifier with fewer than five points per three matches, on average.

WCQ Nation Points M Pts/M Status
WC82Q Qusmo 29 18 1.611 Qualified Automatically
WC80Q Abanhfleft 29 18 1.611 Qualified via Playoff
WC75Q Pridenestrovia 18 12 1.500 Qualified via Playoff
WC75Q Bonesea 19 12 1.583 Qualified via Playoff
WC75Q Ficiscia 19 12 1.583 Qualified via Playoff
WC68Q Schiavonia 22 14 1.571 Advanced to First Playoff
WC68Q Kalumba 23 14 1.643 Advanced to First Playoff
WC61Q Soviet Canuckistan 25 16 1.562 Advanced to Playoff
WC54Q Saugeais 9 8 1.125 Advanced to Interzonal Phase
WC54Q Unitopolis 10 8 1.250 Advanced to Interzonal Phase
WC54Q Jalanat 10 8 1.250 Advanced to Interzonal Phase
WC54Q Burchadinger 14 10 1.400 Advanced to Interzonal Phase
WC54Q Jesselton 13 8 1.625 Advanced to Interzonal Phase
WC54Q Arda 13 8 1.625 Advanced to Interzonal Phase
WC51Q Krytenia 29 18 1.611 Qualified Automatically

Here, we see a pattern begin to emerge that will be reprised later. Certain World Cup Qualifying campaigns featured so many outliers that they weren’t really outliers; these are often attributable to the qualifying campaign’s format, such as in World Cup 54 Qualifying, when sixty teams advanced to the Interzonal Phase; this is a record for most teams not eliminated after the group stage of qualification, & it is reflected in the records above. However, only a few actually managed to qualify. In addition to Qusmo in World Cup 82 Qualifying, Abanhfleft in World Cup 80 Qualifying & Pridenestrovia, Bonesea, & Ficiscia in World Cup 75 Qualifying have managed to qualify to the World Cup without reaching five points per three matches. One has to go all the way back to Krytenia’s campaign in World Cup 51 Qualifying in order to find an example of a team which managed to automatically qualify to the World Cup with so few points per match, however; just like Qusmo, they earned exactly twenty-nine points in precisely eighteen matches.

With one mystery solved, we now turn to another - which turns out to be a rarer feat in the modern era. Let’s look at every team since World Cup 47 Qualifying which has advanced to a playoff, interzonal phase, or the final tournament without having a positive goal difference.

WCQ Nation GD Status
WC82Q Qusmo -2 Qualified Automatically
WC75Q Pridenestrovia ±0 Qualified via Playoff
WC75Q Hasznia -1 Advanced to Playoff
WC61Q Soviet Canuckistan ±0 Advanced to Playoff
WC54Q Unitopologis -3 Advanced to Interzonal Phase
WC54Q Churchma -3 Advanced to Interzonal Phase
WC54Q Saugeais -2 Advanced to Interzonal Phase

That means that Qusmo is only one of seven teams in the modern era not to be eliminated with a nonpositive goal differential. In addition, Qusmo is one of just two teams to qualify to the World Cup despite having a nonpositive goal differential. However, Qusmo’s feat was more impressive even than Pridenestrovia’s break-even goal difference in World Cup 75 Qualification, because Qusmo managed to not just qualify automatically, but to do so with a negative goal difference. After thirty-six qualification campaigns in the modern era of the World Cup - adding up to 1080 qualifiers - Qusmo is the first to qualify with a negative goal difference.

With this discovered, let us now tackle the original challenge that our fan set forth for us: Whether any nation has ever qualified to the World Cup without a playoff & with seven losses. Here, we’ll look at every nation in the modern era to advance to a playoff, interzonal phase, or final tournament with at least seven losses, or with losses totalling more than one third of matches played.

WCQ Nation Losses M L/M Status
WC82Q Qusmo 7 18 38.9% Qualified Automatically
WC80Q Abanhfleft 7 18 38.9% Qualified via Playoff
WC75Q Bonesea 5 12 41.7% Qualified via Playoff
WC75Q Ficiscia 5 12 41.7% Qualified via Playoff
WC72Q Nova Anglicana 5 14 35.7% Qualified via Playoff
WC68Q Schiavonia 6 14 42.9% Advanced to First Playoff
WC68Q Kalumba 5 14 35.7% Advanced to First Playoff
WC68Q Filopines 5 14 35.7% Advanced to First Playoff
WC68Q Milchama 5 14 35.7% Advanced to First Playoff
WC68Q Kericia 5 14 35.7% Advanced to First Playoff
WC58Q Saugeais 6 16 37.5% Qualified via Playoff
WC54Q Unitopolis 4 8 50.0% Advanced to Interzonal Phase
WC54Q Jalanat 4 8 50.0% Advanced to Interzonal Phase
WC54Q Burchadinger 4 10 40.0% Advanced to Interzonal Phase
WC54Q Swartaz 4 10 40.0% Advanced to Interzonal Phase
WC54Q Saugeais 3 8 37.5% Advanced to Interzonal Phase
WC54Q Churchma 3 8 37.5% Advanced to Interzonal Phase

This is our largest list, aided by two World Cup Qualifying campaigns in particular: World Cup 68 Qualifying & World Cup 54 Qualifying. World Cup 54 Qualifying had the potential to create the modern era’s most improbable qualifier on the basis of losses per match, with both Unitopolis & Jalanat advancing to the Interzonal Phase despite losing fully half of their matches. However, none of the five World Cup 68 Qualifying teams nor any of the six World Cup 54 Qualifying teams on this list qualified for the final tournament. On the other hand, all six teams in the modern era which managed to not be eliminated after losing more than a third of their matches in tournaments besides World Cup 54 Qualifying & World Cup 68 Qualifying have qualified. Still, Qusmo & Abanhfleft are the only teams on this list with seven losses, & Qusmo is the only team on this list to have qualified automatically. We will need to dig even deeper.

First, though, let us reflect on what ground we have covered so far. The modern era has seen over one thousand successful campaigns, but Qusmo has experienced a qualifying cycle which is almost unique among them all. The most immediately similar campaign would be that of Abanhfleft just two cycles ago, in World Cup 80 Qualifying, as they, too, earned twenty-nine points in eighteen matches, alongside seven losses, to advance to the World Cup; however, they did so only after a playoff. The World Cup Committee could have easily set the standards of qualification in the way they did for Qusmo this cycle &, under those standards, Abanhfleft would have been unsuccessful, just another team in the dustbin of World Cup history.

Perhaps the most similar qualification campaign to Qusmo’s World Cup 82 Qualification experience, then, can be found all the way back in World Cup 53 Qualifying, with Dorian and Sonya’s experience. Dorian and Sonya did not make any of our above lists, but they were not far off; in eighteen matches, they earned thirty points amidst six losses to finish with just four more goals scored than goals allowed; however, they qualified automatically to the World Cup.

Thus far, we have discovered the last team to have qualified automatically despite earning fewer than five goals per three matches on average in qualification, but no other team in the modern era has qualified automatically having conceded as many or more goals than it scored, having lost at least a third of their matches, or having lost at least seven times in total. Now that we have gone all the way back through World Cup 47 Qualifying, let us venture even deeper, to the ancient era of the World Cup.

For most of the statistics we seek, we do not have to go too far into this era to find a parallel to Qusmo’s experience. In fact, World Cup 44 Qualifying satisfies two of our three remaining questions - & both in triplicate. That cycle, the three nations of Kosovoe, Taeshan, & Peisandros all lost five of their fourteen qualifying matches, for a rate of 35.7%. None of the three nations had a positive goal difference, either; Taeshan & Peisandros conceded precisely as many goals as they scored, while Kosovoe actually scored one goal fewer than they conceded. Thus, we now know the answers to nearly all of our questions.

However, one still persists. It is the one which motivated this quest in the first place. We were asked when the last time a nation qualified automatically, without the need for a playoff, despite losing seven matches in the main portion of qualifying. It took us quite the effort in research, but we have finally found it. The answer to our viewer’s question is that this feat was last achieved by the Lowland Clans, all the way back in World Cup 13 Qualifiers. Of eighteen qualifying matches, the Lowland Clans lost eight of them, only one short of half; however, the team managed to win all ten of their other matches, without playing a draw all cycle, & they were able to qualify to World Cup 13 automatically.

Since we had already journeyed so far, we were curious to see where things ended up. Of course, some of the teams which made these lists were not successful in the World Cup. However, the Lowland Clans was. They rebounded in the final tournament, & they advanced out of their group & into the knockout stages. They advanced out of Group F.

Qusmo will be hoping it can replicate that feat. It is still possible; all they need is a win on the final matchday, or they could advance with a draw if Darmen defeats Turori. Still, earning any points will be a very tall order for Qusmo, as they prepare to face the fifth-ranked nation in the world & the World Cup 80 Champions: Brenecia. After participating in group stages in the UICA Series B Champions’ Cup, UICA Globe Cup, UICA Champions’ Cup, Di Bradini Cup, Copa Rushmori, & Cup of Harmony - twice each - every Qusma senior football team & every Qusma national team has advanced out of every group stage they have ever faced; however, that streak is certainly in jeopardy now. We don’t think that Qusmo will be able to overcome the tremendous odds - & the tremendous players - which face them in Valanora. If they could, it would be nothing short of historic; perhaps that is for the best, however, as this team has a bit of history with history.

Already this cycle, Qusmo has become the first team since Abanhfleft in World Cup 80 to qualify to the World Cup with at least seven losses, with at least one-third losses in qualifying, or with fewer than 1.66 points per qualifying match. Already this cycle, Qusmo has become the first team since Pridenestrovia in World Cup 75 to qualify to the World Cup with a nonpositive goal differential. Already this cycle, Qusmo has become the first team since Krytenia in World Cup 51 to qualify to the World Cup automatically with fewer than 1.66 points per qualifying match. Already this cycle, Qusmo has become the first team since Kosovoe, Taeshan, & Peisandros to qualify to the World Cup automatically with at least one-third losses in qualifying. Already this cycle, Qusmo has become the first team since Kosovoe in World Cup 44 to qualify to the World Cup automatically with a negative goal difference. &, already this cycle, Qusmo has become the first team since the Lowland Clans in World Cup 13 to qualify to the World Cup automatically with at least seven losses.

Perhaps they can conjure up one more moment of magic. Perhaps they can make history again.

A Blog

WE’RE REALLY GONNA DO IT

I TOLD YOU WE WOULD WIN THE WORLD CUP. I TOL DYOU. & NOW WE’RE GONNA DO IT.

I SWORE OFF this blog because I REALiZED that the GOVERNMENT OF QUSMO was trying to USE ME for thier own benefit. Well guess what? WE’RE IN THE WORLD CUP, SO I”M BACK.

I was hearing some “statistics” from Spony Luq Television about how Qusmo is special. WELL GUESS WHAT? WE ALL NOW WHY QUSMO IS SPECIAL< & IT’S BECUASE IT”S QUSMO.

So when you’re looking at “statistics” about the World Cup don’t look at World Cup 13. That’s a whole SIXTY_NINE TOURNAMENTS AGO. hehe

Speed it up a whole FIFTY tournaments, all the way to WORLD CUP 63. Because that is where the MOST MAGICAL STORY EVER that did nt have Qusmo happened.

It was WORLD CUP 63 & it was Audioslavia’s FIRST WORLD CUP. WEll not really. They had been around for a while & then they stopped showing up for a while. In fact they had bottled somewhere around sixty-two World Cup finals before then. But whatever anyways Audioslavia had qualified for its FIRST EVER World Cup since it came back. & guess what? SOMEHOW SOME WAY - ITS UNBELEVABLE I KNOW - THEY DIDNT SCREW UP THIS TIME. THEY ACTUALLY WON IT. Well guess what: QUSMO is in the EXACT SAME POSITION. QUSMO is also in its first world Cup. & QUSMO’s going to WIN IT TOO. The stage is perfectly set. Let’s break it down:

GROUP STAGE: Qusmo faces Darmen & Turori & Brenecia. Well GUESS WHAT? Turoi is BASICALLY just VILITIA JUNIOR & BRENECIA is BASICALLY just NEPHRA JR so THEY DON”T EVEN MATTER. Qusmo’s not Qusmo JR. QUsmo’s QUSMO SR. Actully theyre not that either. They’re just Qusmo. But hey’re not Qusmo Jr either. & Darmen? Well GUESS WHAT? I dont actually know what they’re the junior of. Hmm... green & in Rushmore... maybe Pasarga? I dont know. I feel like Pasaraga something unor though...

WELL GUESS WHAT that means that Qusmo is going to CRUSH Group F & then they’ll play the SECONDPLACE TEAM from GROUP G in the ROUND OF SIXTEEn. & GUESS WHAT? PRASAGAs THERE. & so is FARFAFARFIS. We can’t lose to FALALALALA; one of those people PLAY in Qusmo & they STILL havent won a championshi. Guess which nation has won EVERY SINGLE TROPHY EVER AWARDED by Fuzpon QUsma? QUSMO. NEXT.

Then we get to the QUARTEFINAL & GUESS WHAT? Qusmos gonna win THAT TOO. Let’s look at who we have. Maybe Valladares? Well guess wht we did last time we played them? WE BEAT THEm. Maybe the other Val, Vallanora? Well guess what? First we lost to them & then we drew against them so NOW we have to WIN because SYMMETTRY!!!!

So now we’re in the SEMIFINAL. ut it’s not over yet. BECAUSE GUESS HAT? I think we’ll get TUOUI. Tououoou you say? DOn’t they always lose in the quarterfinals? Well GUESS WHAT? in the LAST World Cup they ACTULLYY did make it in but then they IMMEDIATELY LOST. PROBABLY to APOLOGIZE for DISRUPTING THE NATURAL ORDER OF THE MULTIVERSE. SO GUESS WHAT? THEYLL LOSE AGAIN & THEN QUSMO WILL GET TO THE WORLD CUP FINAL.

& GUESS WHAT? JUST LIKE AUDIOSLAVIA QUSMO WILL WIN THE WOLD CP. We’re going to face SOUTH COVELLO & EVEN IF WE CAN”T SCORE THEY CAN’T EITHER. & GUESS WHAT? THAT MEANS WE GET TO A PENALTY SHOOTOUT. & THAT MEANS ILINX-KEPEX ZEV & XYNAT_ELEVA CUF GET TO WIN IT ALL FOF US. WE”RE GONNA WIN!!!!

Just you watch.

SPONY LUQ TELEVISION

Hello, all. Welcome to Spony Luq Television, broadcasting from Qanz, Qusmo. Qusmo’s national team has not only qualified for its first-ever World Cup but performed well in it. Goals scored by team captain Ilinx-Kepex Zev meant that Qusmo won its World Cup debut one-nil over Darmen & its group stage finale by the same score over Brenecia. Despite a loss to Turori by an identical scoreline, that vaulted Qusmo to second in Group F, advancing the debutants over the fifth-ranked team in the Multiverse & the world champions of just two cycles ago. However, they will have to take on another high-calibre team in the form of Farfadillis if they intend to extend the length of their run. With that, let’s get to our first question, from a viewer in Kareen, Valanora.
Farfadillis is such a good team & Qusmo is so new; does Qusmo really have a chance?

Yes, it is true; Qusmo is ranked only thirty-fourth, while Farfadillis is ranked sixth in the Multiverse. However, in order to reach this match, Qusmo had to defeat fifth-ranked Brenecia. It is possible.

That’s not to say that it’s particularly likely, however. Of seven qualifiers for World Cup 82 which did not qualify for World Cup 81, Qusmo is the only one which remains in the competition. Qusmo is only the lone Pot 4 team left standing. There’s no other way around it: every other team left in the knockout rounds is higher-ranked than Qusmo. The rankings seem to suggest that Qusmo won’t stay in the knockout rounds for long.

That said, if matches were decided on paper, we wouldn’t play them in the first place. This World Cup has already seen quite a few surprises. Fully half of Pot 1 has already been eliminated, including Brenecia, at the unlikely hands of Qusmo. Valanora has become the first World Cup co-host since Drawkland in World Cup 79 to fail to advance to the knockout rounds despite being the only co-host ranked within the top twenty in the Multiverse during that time. Qasden routed Cosumar five-one but then got picked apart to the tune of a three-nil score against Nephara the next matchday - but it was Qasden to win the group, Cosumar to advance, & Nephara to be eliminated. Eura earned six points, but it still was not enough to advance, which will surely do nothing to mild any regional rivalry the Rushmori nation may have with either Sargossa or Cassadaigua. &, of course, it was lowly Qusmo that stunned Brenecia to move on.

So, it can happen. & perhaps Farfadillis will be peeking ahead at the potential match calendar. Farfadillis is the third-highest-ranked team left in the tournament, & the top two teams - Vilita & South Covello - will play in the Round of Sixteen, in a World Cup 81 final rematch. Farfadillis would only have to play the winner of that match in the final, too. In the meantime, both of their potential quarterfinal opponents find themselves outside the top ten, & only one such team could meet them in the semifinals. Farfadillis could easily be overlooking the thirty-fourth-ranked World Cup debutants that stand before them, trying to peer ahead to see who their next opponent will be - or to imagine themselves lifting the World Cup trophy.

That would be a mistake, of course - & one we don’t think Farfadillis would make. Though Qusmo will be the only Pot 4 team to compete in the Round of Sixteen, many Pot 4 teams have made it through before, including three just last cycle. However, few have succeeded. Qusmo will be the fifteenth Pot 4 team to compete in the Round of Sixteen since World Cup 71, but one would have to go back all the way to World Cup 70 to find a Pot 4 team that has won a knockout stage match.

As a note on the rankings listed in the table, the World Cup 73 ranks appear to be inaccurate, as both Kernansquillec & Starblaydia are ranked forty-eighth, yet Zenic is ranked forty-ninth; however, this reflects the official rankings provided by the tournament organizers. Further, the World Cup 71 ranks used are inflated, as only post-tournament rankings were available.

At that tournament, surprise group winners HopNation, having taken a perfect nine points from Group C, defeated fellow Pot 4 nation Super-Llamaland by a five-four score, before felling Legalese one-nil in the quarterfinal. After a three-all draw through two hours, HopNation lost two-three on penalties to Felix in the semifinals, putting an end to the dream, & they were unable to score in a one-nil loss to Polar Islandstates in the third place playoff. Still, making it all the way to the semifinal would be a success for nearly any team in the Multiverse, much less one pegged by many to finish last in the group stage. Qusmo would certainly be elated to reach that stage in this tournament. They have to get there first, though - &, over the past twelve tournaments, only one has succeeded.

With that, let’s get to our next question, from a viewer in Qanz.
Can Qusmo make it all the way?

In short, probably not. Just winning one knockout round match would be a massive feat, much less winning the entire World Cup. Farfadillis is one of the best teams left in the tournament, & they will pose a particular challenge to Qusmo because this is the best offense the team has ever faced, by a long stretch. Before this tournament, Qusmo had never played a team ranked better than thirteenth in the Multiverse. Farfadillis represents the culmination of a three-match stretch in which Qusmo has played the fifth-, sixth-, & seventh-ranked teams in the Multiverse, but while Brenecia & Turori are moderately defensive sides, there is no doubt that Farfadillis is where it is today because of the strength of its fearsome attack.

Of all the hundred fifty teams that entered World Cup 82 Qualifying, Farfadillis scored the most goals out of all of them: sixty-eight, good for an average of nearly four in every match. That allowed them to reach a points total of forty-nine - a full twenty higher than what Qusmo managed, & the second-most of any nation, after Nephara - which saw them win Group 12 by a staggering fifteen points, more than any other qualifying group winner this cycle.

They have not just been adept at beating low-quality opposition, either. Farfadillis has maintained their stellar form in the tournament proper. They earned the right to play Qusmo in the Round of Sixteen after winning all three of their matches in Group G; only South Covello managed to accomplish the same feat. Farfadillis’s seven goals in the group stage are joint-third in the tournament, after Audioslavia’s eight & Baker Park’s nine, & their goal difference of five is unmatched by any team in World Cup 82 except for Baker Park, with a goal difference of six.

Farfadillis can have nine players contributing to any given attack, with a formation resembling a Qusma 3-5-2, featuring a Qusma back three. The quality of the attacking players on the pitch is undeniable, with players like Xíxì Êns, the striker for the Nepharim Premiership’s Sabrefell Athletics & Groaré Sasca, the centre midfielder for Pug Qusmyra’s own KF Koflir, set to take the field for their country. It should be clear to even a casual football fan that this Farf team means business. For any Qusma football fan out there, it is time to face reality: Farfadillis is not only the favourite to win this match, but - dare we say it - to win the entire World Cup.

Let’s imagine their path. They are the sixth-ranked team in the Multiverse, but they wouldn’t have to play a higher-ranked team until the final. Second-ranked Nephara was felled in the group stage by their loss to Cosumar & their inability to defeat 95X. Thanks to a three-goal loss on the final matchday, fourth-ranked Eura was locked out of the knockout rounds despite having six points. &, of course, Qusmo’s memorable win over Brenecia knocked the fifth-ranked side out of the tournament. That leaves third-ranked South Covello & top-ranked Vilita, but they will face each other in the Round of Sixteen, meaning one will eliminate the other. & the winner of that match would be on the other side of the bracket.

Instead, after dispatching the lowest-ranked opponent left in the tournament, Farfadillis would play either Sargossa or Starblaydia in the quarterfinal. Both teams have performed well in this tournament, with six points, six goals scored, & three goals conceded. They also are ranked very similarly, with Sargossa fourteenth & Starblaydia fifteenth. We give a slight edge to Starblaydia here, but it should be a close, exciting match.

If Starblaydia wins, Farfadillis would be the favourite in the quarterfinal, too. Starblaydia only qualified on thirty-five points, needing a win on the final matchday of qualifying to reach Valanora - &, even then, they only qualified on goal difference. That’s far from the dominating display that Farfadillis put on in the qualifiers, & it’s far from the historic peak of Starblaydia. Getting to the quarterfinals would be an important milestone on the quest for a record sixth World Cup title, but we don’t think they’ll be able to get any farther; instead, Farfadillis should get closer to its first.

Next, Farfadillis would play the winner of a quarterfinal between either Audioslavia or Cassadaigua & either Turori or Pasarga. In the first knockout match, we lean towards Audioslavia, which has had the best attacking display in Valanora this tournament thus far. Audioslavia has had success before this tournament, too, earning their ticket to Valanora by a comfortable ten-point margin in Group 2, a much less dramatic affair than Cassadaigua’s qualifying journey, which saw them qualify by a single point, & which required a final matchday win to go through. Cassadaigua has done well in getting to the knockouts, but we think that is where they will finish their run.

In the second, we would pick Turori, as they are not only more highly ranked but have gone unbeaten in Group F to win it - as opposed to Pasarga, which endured a painful three-nil loss to none other than Farfadillis to open the tournament. Turori has scored more goals, conceded fewer goals, & earned more points than Pasarga in the group stage. This match also highlights another good fortune of Farfadillis’s draw: the two top-ranked sides remaining in the Valanora half of the tournament are playing each other in the Round of Sixteen, & the winner of that match will have to navigate a quarterfinal before they would even have the chance to play a semifinal against Farfadillis.

We think that Turori has enough quality to get to that semifinal, though. After starting slow, able to score only one goal over their first two matches, the offense has burst to life, with four against Darmen. If the offense continues to play that well, & the defense continues the form that saw them earn two clean sheets during the group stage, Turori is capable of getting far in this tournament & even getting past a quarterfinal once again.

However, if they are to play Farfadillis, we think that they will fall again at the semifinal stage. Turori’s win of Group F has masked some troubling signs which have manifested themselves in World Cup 82 Qualifying. They conceded three goals in losses to Kita-Hinode & Kelssek, & they dropped points to teams like Olastor & Flaw. Kita-Hinode & Kelssek are good teams, but they aren’t at this World Cup. A team with the attacking quality of Farfadillis will certainly be able to exploit the weaknesses that they took advantage of - &, if that’s the case, Turorian fans might have flashbacks to that five-one loss in the last tournament’s semifinals to Vilita.

Ultimately, we think that the final will come down to the two teams which have earned full points in this tournament thus far: South Covello & Farfadillis - & what a final it would be. The top offense in the Multiverse would take on the top defense in the Multiverse. South Covello conceded only seven goals over the course of eighteen qualifying matches, nearly half of the mark of second-best Ko-oren, with twelve. In fact, South Covello’s seven goals conceded over the course of twenty-one World Cup Qualifying & final tournament fixtures thus far is fewer than the number of losses one team in the knockout rounds has suffered during that period - Qusmo, of course, with eight.

However, what better team to break down such a tremendous defense than such a tremendous offense? There is no guarantee that Farfadillis would win such a matchup, of course, but we think that they would be in the best position to break down South Covello’s defense & emerge with a victory. Further, Farfadillis enjoys what may be perhaps the easiest route to the final of any of the sixteen teams left in the tournament. If we were to predict the winner of this World Cup, it would not be Qusmo; it would be the team on the other side of the touchline in their first-ever World Cup knockout round match in Valanora.

If teams are tied on points, whether in the group table or in an intergroup ranking table, the following tiebreakers shall apply, in this order:
  1. Greater number of points obtained in the matches played between the teams in question;
  2. Superior goal difference resulting from the matches played between the teams in question;
  3. Number of wins in the matches played between the teams in question;
  4. Greater number of goals scored in the matches played between the teams in question;
  5. Superior goal difference in all group matches;
  6. Number of wins in all group matches;
  7. Higher number of goals scored in all group matches;
  8. Fair play rankings;
  9. Ranking in the Rushmori regional rankings; &
  10. Random draw.
In the event that more than two teams are initially tied, & at least one team wins or loses a tiebreaker but at least two teams remain tied, the tiebreakers will begin again from the first tiebreaker, with only the still-tied teams included.

“Hello. Our name is Qusmyr Qaq, Qusmyr Qusma. Our parents, their parents, & their parents before them have ruled this great nation for one thousand ninety-three generations, & it is now our great honour to lead Qusmo as its head of state. Qusmo is a nation of nearly one hundred million people, united in belief in the sacred mantra of Qujz dujz Luq tug Qujz peq Luq: Justice for all & justice above all. Our nation is distinctly Qusma, yet we stand as a proud member of the community of Rushmore. It is in that spirit, as an honest neighbour & a warm friend, that we have assembled twenty Qusma experts for a momentous occasion. It is my especial privilege to formally announce the intent of Fuzpon Qusma to submit a bid to host the thirty-second edition of the Copa Rushmori.”

“Thank you, my Qusmyr. You, truly, are Qusmi Bez. My name is Drolx-Dalox Aka, & it is my honour to call myself Qusmi Bez, the head of government of Qusmo. Under my administration & those of my predecessors, we have made great strides as a nation to reach this point, & we are proud to showcase Qusmo to the entire region. Qusmo is a developed nation, fully enjoying the marvels of modern technology & infrastructure. Politically, we are a social democracy, & we take the rights of our citizens very seriously, especially in regards to ensuring a free & fair vote. Socially, one of the most unique things about Qusmo in the context of the rest of the region is that all Qusmi’y are biologically genderless; this sometimes causes confusion abroad, but it means that we are a tolerant, inclusive nation, accepting of all people & of all their differences & diversity. I can think of no better stage than the Copa Rushmori to showcase Qusmo to the region & to showcase the region to the Multiverse. We have outlined twenty Qusmi’y to speak on various parts of Qusmo’s bid to host the next Copa Rushmori, & we will all stay to take questions at the end of this press conference. So, let’s start straight away, with Brelk-Xeral Erv.”

“Qusmo is no stranger to football. On the domestic level, in the span of only three seasons, Qusma clubs have reached the knockout rounds of all four UICA competitions, besides, of course, the Super Cup. Qusma clubs have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Vilitan Cove Invitational, Cygnus Cup Winners' Cup, & Rushmori Copa de Campeones, the three non-UICA international club competitions Qusma clubs have competed in. Back to UICA play, KF Qastyr has reached the quarterfinals of the UICA Champions’ Cup in each of the past two seasons, & I was an assistant on the staff of the KF Atlov team which reached the quarterfinals of the UICA Series B Champions’ Cup. I am on this stage now, of course, because I managed Atlov Juzuna as it won the Twenty-Fifth UICA Youth Cup in Tropicorp Park. Now, of course, I’ll hand it off to someone who needs no introduction - though I’ll give it to them anyways. On the club level, they’re a three-time Pug Qusmyra champion, three-time Fuzpon Qusma Player of the Season, & two-time UICA Champions’ Cup quarterfinalist. On the international level, they’re Qusmo’s record caps leader, leading World Cup goalscorer, & captain. Everyone, please give it up for the incomparable Ilinx-Kepex Zev.”

“Thank you so much, Erv; I appreciate it. But Qusmo’s success isn’t just at the club level. We’ve only participated in three World Cup cycles thus far, but we qualified to the last World Cup - & even advanced to the Round of Sixteen of World Cup 82, eliminated only on penalty kicks. Maybe that shouldn’t be too surprising, since our national team has qualified for the knockout rounds of every final tournament we’ve participated in, including a run to third place in Cup of Harmony 73. Outside of World Cup Committee-sanctioned tournaments, too, Qusmo’s U21s won a knockout match in both their Di Bradini Cup appearances: a Di Bradini Cup 43 quarterfinal showing & a Di Bradini Cup 44 semifinal placing. In the Copa Rushmori, too, Qusmo has made it to the knockout rounds of both tournaments it has participated in, losing to eventual champions Savojarna on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals of the last edition. So, after only three cycles of World Cup Qualifying, Qusmo is ranked twenty-second in the Multiverse, & after only two Copas Rushmori, Qusmo is ranked seventh in the region. We may be fairly new on the football scene compared to some other nations, but there can be no doubt that we are competitive.”

“Of course, playing in a tournament is a much different task than hosting it. It takes a lot of infrastructure to host an international football tournament, & not all nations are up to the task. However, we’re confident that Qusmo is. My name is Alfan-Savar Bel, & as the president of Blonvarz Qusma, our company has built more than two dozen stadia across the country for Pug Qusmyra & Pug Qusma teams, all meeting the minimum requirements for bidding for a UICA final. &, of course, we built the eighty thousand-seat Mastad Qusma, which hosted the UICA Youth Cup 24 semifinals & final, the UICA Series B Champions’ Cup 69 final, & the Rushmori Copa de Campeones 45 final, & which will be the highlight of this bid. Qusmo has the capacity & the infrastructure. Qusmo is capable of hosting the Copa Rushmori.”

“Because we have so many existing stadia capable of hosting an international competition, however, this bid plans on utilizing stadia from all across the nation. My name is Helek-Nenzi Ono, & as a left midfielder for both KF Qastyr & the Qusma national team, I have come to know firsthand the passion of Qusma fans in every vovoq of our country - so, if our bid wins, we’ll make sure that the rest of Rushmore knows it, too. The final will be hosted in the national stadium, Mastad Qusma, while the third place playoff will be hosted in Mastad Atlema, home of Atlov Juzuna, the only Qusma team to have won an international trophy - thus far. Semifinals will be hosted in Mastad Qastyra & Mastad Poldanza, home to Qusmo’s two teams to have won a Pug Qusmyra or Puk Zala. Quarterfinals will be hosted at Mastad Koflira, Mastad Atlanta, Mastad Trewa, & Mastad Tracama, homes of the four other Qusma clubs to have competed in the UICA Globe Cup. Depending on the number of entries we receive, if we have a full octofinal round, we will place each of the eight octofinal matches in its own vovoq. We plan to use all seventeen stadia used by current Pug Qusmyra teams, as well as Mastad Qusma, spreading the beautiful game to every corner of our beautiful country.”

“Of course, it’s not just the physical infrastructure; there’s a certain technical & logistic element that comes to hosting a major international football tournament, too. I’m Xilit-Culak Ixi, & as Executive Vice President of Fuzpon Qusma, I can say that we understand that Pug Qusmyra is not really directly comparable to the experience of hosting a full international tournament; there may be some doubts as to whether our nation is really up to the task. That’s why we’ve gone to such great lengths to ensure this press conference answers as many questions as possible. That is also why we have contracted with the NSFS unit of the Paripanan sports consulting firm xkoranate, which will provide the expertise needed to ensure the tournament runs smoothly. We would also like to assure Qusma taxpayers that we will be responsible with the money we plan to spend; we have negotiated a contract with xkoranate which features additive bonuses for performance, not the multiplicative performance modifiers that some other host bids have employed, whose costs can quickly get out of hand.”

“Of course, one of the most important logistics for teams & fans alike is actually getting to the tournaments. My name is Yivix-Sylax Opu, & I’m the president of Qusmair, Qusmo’s premier airline, & I would like to assure everyone that we will expand our operations between host cities & international destinations throughout Rushmore during the course of the tournament. But before anyone books their tickets, of course, we need to know the schedule - &, in fact, that’s one of the areas where the bid committee has already consulted with xkoranate. Fuzpon Qusma plans on using roughly the same matchday schedule as was used in competitions like Copa Rushmori XXX & Copa Rushmori XXIX; however, the bid does plan on giving an extra day of rest to all teams between the group stage & the knockout rounds, as well as between the semifinals & the third-place playoff & final. We are hoping that this bit of extra rest - &, yes, extra travel time - can help produce higher-quality football for all involved, allowing the teams which are truly the best to emerge victorious in the end. Now, please welcome Yelto-Alfan Ono, centreback for Qusmo’s national team.”

“Groups will be drawn based on four nearly equally-sized pots, derived from the most recent Rushmori regional rankings; however, Pot 1 would contain one fewer nation than the other pots, because Qusmo would be assigned to Group A as its Pot 1 team & would play in the tournament’s opening match, at Mastad Qusma. Representatives from each participating nation, as well as the general public, whether fans from afar or from here in Qusmo, will be invited to a gala to be hosted at the famed Hall of Discord in Qanz to observe the live draw. We will also post live updates on twii.tur & release the full group draw to the public immediately after it is conducted. Pots are not yet set, because more teams may yet enter the tournament, but updated Rushmori rankings can be found at our bid website & are attached in our press materials for those in the room now. I’m proud to say that Qusmo is seventh in the rankings now & will only climb higher - & that’s because of our fantastic manager, Avarn-Oxolt Ban, who’s up next.”

“Thank you, Ono. The rankings hint that there will be two heavy favourites in this tournament; however, we want to assure everyone that Rushmore isn’t just Nephara & Eura. Just look at the last time this tournament was played, when Savojarna marched all the way to win their first regional championship. Just look at the last major tournament to be played, as a quarter of the World Cup 82 field hailed from Rushmore & four Rushmori teams made it to the knockout rounds - with Eura & Nephara being conspicuously absent, & the other two Rushmori teams not to advance being eliminated by other Rushmori teams in their groups. Of course, I don’t expect Nephara or Eura to finish at the bottom of their groups, but one would be remiss to consider those two teams to be the only challengers for the title, no matter what the rankings might say. Many teams will be able to pose a strong challenge; it’s my hope that Qusmo will be one of them. If that’s to happen, every member of our team will have to be top class - including our goalkeeper, Xynat-Evela Cuf, who’s about to take the stage. But with players like Cuf on our team, I know we’ll be able to.”

“You’re too kind. Of course, which teams challenge is dependent on which teams compete. As of now, we are aware of twenty entries for Copa Rushmori XXXII; however, we believe that the number of teams competing in this tournament could rise. Nations like sixth-ranked & two-time champions Pasarga have not yet formally registered, & besides, despite the small size of the last edition, each of the four Copas Rushmori that came before featured twenty-four teams. With this in mind, Fuzpon Qusma has prepared two alternate bid formats, based on estimates of twenty or twenty-four entrants. Both feature four-team groups with a single round robin format, with the top two teams from each group & some third-place teams advancing to single elimination knockout rounds. I’ll hand it off to Xilit-Zaxac Yol, Qusmo’s record goalscorer, to walk us through the twenty-team format before we settle in for a decidedly thorough explication of the proposed twenty-four-team format.”

“Thank you, Cuf. If twenty teams are entered to compete in Copa Rushmori XXXII, we’ll divide these teams into five groups of four teams each. The five teams to win their groups will advance directly to the quarterfinals, & the five group runners-up & the best third-place team will advance to the second round. We have attached a bracket in this conference’s press materials, which we’ll make publicly available on our bid’s official website, which indicates which teams will play in which matches, with the first number indicating in which position the team finished in its group & the second number indicating where it ranked among the teams that finished in that place in their groups.”

“& now we go from the front line to the back line; I’m Cunix-Betva Tla, centreback & vice captain for Qusmo. If twenty-four teams compete in Copa Rushmori XXXII, we would divide these teams into six groups of four teams each. The six teams to win their groups, the six to finish as group runners-up, & the four best third-place teams will advance to the octofinals. As opposed to a few previous tournaments featuring twenty-four teams, with sixteen advancing to the knockout rounds - including Copa Rushmori XXX, the first regional tournament I or any other Qusmi have ever played in - while a deterministic bracket will be used, seeding will only be determined after all group stage matches are played. Let’s go right back up front again with Paliv-Xilit Max, our team’s poacher.”

“The past past two Copas Rushmori to feature twenty-four participants - Copa Rushmori XXX, in Cassadaigua, & Copa Rushmori XXIX, in Valladares - used a tournament format which, while common, is flawed. A knockout round seeding based on groups is convenient for setting tournament venues in advance, but it is unfair to participants, because it makes some groups more advantageous to play in than others. In response to Qusmo’s only experience in a twenty-four team tournament - Copa Rushmori XXX, which used this format - Fuzpon Qusma consulted with a statistician to produce an improved format. We have attached a copy of their findings in this conference’s press materials, which we will also make publicly available on our bid’s official website. We have adopted the proposal outlined in section 3.1. Now, let’s invite our statistician, Pertz-Azeld Xer, to speak to us.”

“Thank you. It’s phenomenal to be surrounded by so many wonder people. In the Qusma format for a twenty-four team tournament, teams always have an incentive for performing their best, even if they have guaranteed advancement or even guaranteed winning their group. In addition to this universal win incentive, this format features balance based on group stage performance, & it ensures that there will be no group stage rematches until at least the semifinals - the latest stage it is mathematically possible to guarantee this for - & no rematch of a group winner & group runner-up until the final or third-place playoff - again, the latest stage it is mathematically possible to guarantee this for. All of this will produce more exciting action for fans of all teams in both the knockout rounds & the group stage. Most of all, though, this format will ensure that the tournament is conducted as fairly as possible: with balance & group diversity preserved, group advantage eliminated, & global win incentive heightened. I have the utmost confidence that, if twenty-four nations play in a Copa Rushmori hosted in Qusmo, it will be the soundest competitive format we have seen in the history of this tournament.”

“Thank you for your insight, Xer. My name is Forzu-Ralox Kal, & I’m a right midfielder for Qusmo. To illustrate this new format, we have also attached a bracket. The first number indicates in which position the team finished in its group. Group winners then have a second number, indicating where they ranked among the teams that finished in that place in their groups. The top four group winners will play an octofinal match against a third-place team, & the top two group winners will not play another group winner until at least the semifinal round. Group runners-up will be divided into two tables: one for those whose groups’ winners are on the left side of the bracket, & the other for those whose groups’ winners are on the right side of the bracket. The top two group runners-up in each of these two tables will play each other in the octofinals, while the remaining two group runners-up will play a group winner in the octofinals. Finally, third-place teams will be seeded such that no group stage rematches can occur until the semifinals. In the event that there are multiple possible configurations which satisfy this condition, the top available third-place teams will be placed in the most advantageous seed possible, indicated by the lowest of the second numbers in the attached sixteen-team bracket. I’ve just about lost my breath talking about this bracket, so I’ll pass it over to Zenon-Gerol Kal, one of our centrebacks, to finish it off.”

“Thanks, Kal - though if that’s worn you out, maybe you ought to spend some more time in the training room. To illustrate how this method might be implemented in practice, we have also attached an example bracket showing how the bracket would have been structured in Copa Rushmori XXX had the Qusma format been used. Some octofinal pairings remain the same - most notably for our domestic audience, Qusmo’s tie against Ceni, which currently stands as Qusmo’s last Copa Rushmori loss, Ceni’s last victory in any competition, & not my best-ever performance. That said, most pairings have changed - but precisely the same sixteen teams would be selected to advance to the knockout rounds; the knockout seedings &, therefore, the knockout pairings would be the only difference in this format. Let’s kick it up the pitch to Gavax-Nenzi Abe, our attacking midfielder.”

“In either a twenty- or twenty-four-team format, a third-place playoff would be played between the two losing semifinalists to determine the third-place team in the tournament. Fuzpon Qusma would prefer to play a full octofinal round, both to implement the Qusma format & to have the symbolic opportunity to place one octofinal match in each vovoq of Qusmo; that inclines us towards preferring the twenty-four-team format. Twenty-four teams would also mean thirty-six group stage matches, allowing us to place two group stage matches in each of our eighteen hosting stadia. &, of course, it would allow for an even grander showcase of football from across the region. That said, the format is, of course, dependent on how many teams enter competition; we hope to play with twenty-four teams, but we are also prepared to play with twenty.”

“My name is Jerat-Jonto Jan; I’m Qusmo’s defensive midfielder, & as the least-capped member of the XI we used at the World Cup, I get the delight of explaining our tiebreakers. Before I begin, we have also attached a full explanation of our proposed system of tiebreakers in our press materials packet, & those not present today can find the full list of tiebreakers at our official bid website. So, we put head-to-head results over goal difference, & we’d prefer to use wins as a metric over goals scored when ranking, for example, a third-place team in one group with one win & two losses against a third-place team in another group with three draws. That’ll ensure that all tactics & styles of play are accommodated at the tournament, & it’ll add even more to teams’ incentive to win. We’d also like to point out that if there’s three or teams or more tied on points, & if a tiebreaker only partially resolves a tie, we will recalculate the tiebreakers using only the teams still tied at that point. Since the first set of tiebreakers relate to head-to-head results, this could be important if three teams tie within a group, though it would not have any effect in any other situation. Finally, we do not plan on playing any additional tiebreaker matches; if teams cannot be separated by any other criteria, we are prepared to conduct a random draw.”

“Thank you all, truly. I do believe I’m our twentieth & final speaker today. My name is Kynda-Nirlo Zyn, & I’ve had the great honour of presiding as the Chair of the Qopa XXXII Bid Committee. We’re so excited to unveil this bid to the world, & we hope the rest of the region is as happy as we are. If anyone here has any questions for anyone on the stage today, we’ll get straight to them now. Thank you all for making the trip to Qanz; we hope you’ll return again for the opening match & the final of the Copa Rushmori.”
