Welcome to Fuzpon Qusma. We are glad that you are interested in learning about how club football works in Qusma. The following should give you everything that we would anticipate you would need or be interested in about the structure of Qusma club football.

Association Football Leagues in Qusmo

There are five tiers of pugy fuzpona (football leagues) in Qusma, featuring 16 leagues of 20 clubs each. There are 320 officially sanctioned professional clubs in the Qusma football pyramid structure.

Qavaxuzj Bez (Tier I) is comprised entirely of Pug Qusmyra (the League of the Qusmyr).

Qavaxuzj Cez (Tier II) is comprised solely of Pug Qusma (the League of the Nation).

Qavaxuzj Dez (Tier III) is split into two leagues: Pug Qelama (the League of the Light) & Pug Qelamajza (the League of the Sun).

Qavaxuzj Fez (Tier IV) is broken down further into four leagues: Pug Fedala (the League of the Prairie), Pug Refora (the League of the Forest), Pug Serana (the League of the Sea), & Pug Tumata (the League of the Mountain).

Qavaxuzj Gez (Tier V) is the lowest tier of professional football in Qusmo, & it features eight leagues: Pug Neqxeqa, Pug Neqyeqa, Pug Xeqyeqa, Pug Zeqyeqa, Pug Zeqxeqa, Pug Zeqveqa, Pug Xeqveqa, & Pug Neqveqa (the Leagues of the North, Northeast, East, Southeast, South, Southwest, West, & Northwest, respectively).

Promotion & Relegation in Qusma Football

Of course, the Qusma football pyramid operates on a promotion-relegation system.

The last three finishers in Pug Qusmyra of Qavaxuzj Bez will be relegated to Qavaxuzj Cez.

The champion & runner-up of Pug Qusma of Qavaxuzj Cez will be promoted to Pug Qusmyra of Qavaxuzj Bez, as will the winner of a Puk Buvanorata (promotion playoff) contested by the third through sixth-placed finishers. The last three finishers in Pug Qusma will be relegated to Qavaxuzj Dez.

The champion of each league of Qavaxuzj Dez will be promoted to Qavaxuzj Cez, as will the winner of a Puk Buvanorata contested by the second through fifth-placed finishers of each league. The last three finishers in Qavaxuzj Dez will be relegated to Qavaxuzj Fez.

The champion of each league of Qavaxuzj Fez will be promoted to Qavaxuzj Dez, as will the winner of a Puk Buvanorata contested by the second through fifth-placed finishers of each league. The last three finishers in Qavaxuzj Fez will be relegated to Qavaxuzj Gez.

The champion of each league of Qavaxuzj Gez will be promoted to Qavaxuzj Fez, as will the winner of a Puk Buvanorata contested by the second through fifth-placed finishers of each league. There is no relegation from Qavaxuzj Gez to the amateur leagues.

Qusma Football Cup Competitions

In addition to league competitions, there are two cup competitions for professional football clubs in Qusmo & one cup competition for youth football academies. All are single-leg & single-elimination.

The most prestigious cup is Puk Zala (the Grand Cup). This features all 320 professional kypiny fuzpona (football clubs) in Qusmo. Tier V sides enter in Preliminary Round 1, Tier IV sides enter in Preliminary Round 2, Tier III sides enter in Preliminary Round 4, & Tier II sides enter in Preliminary Round 5. In addition, all Tier I sides that were promoted from Tier II in the previous ryrak (season) enter in Preliminary Round 5, as does the Tier I side that finished the previous season only one spot from relegation. After six preliminary rounds, the remainder of the Tier I sides enter in the Round of 32, and the competition has five rounds proper.

The other major senior cup to be had in Qusmo is Puk Zama (the Invitational Cup). This features 63 to 65 clubs on the basis of their previous season’s performance, including representatives from clubs which competed in all 16 Qusma leagues in the previous season. All teams which competed in Tier I the previous season will earn an invitation, as will all teams which competed in Tier II & were not relegated (or 17 teams). So, too, will all teams which were promoted from or competed in the Puk Buvanorata of their respective Tier III leagues (that is to say, the top five finishers), all teams which were promoted from their Tier IV leagues (that is to say, the champion & the Puk Buvanorata champion), & all Tier V league champions. This awards 63 entries into the competition. An additional entry will be extended to a defending Puk Zama &/or Puk Zala champion which has not earned a spot through their league. The competition typically sees six rounds. However, because of the uncertain nature of the number of invitations, small format adjustments may be made to accommodate different numbers of invitations. in the likely case that no extra invitations need to be awarded to the defending Puk Zama or Puk Zala champions, the defending Pug Qusmyra champion will enter the Puk Zala in the second round. In the unlikely event that one of these champions does not qualify through their league but the other does, all 64 entries will enter play in the first round. Finally, in the highly unlikely event that 65 invitations are issued, the defending Puk Zama & Puk Zala champions will play each other in a playoff for the 64th place in the first round proper.

The sole official award that can be won by a nonprofessional football club in Qusmo is Puk Juzuna (the Academy Cup). This cup is contested by the youth academies of all Pug Qusmyra clubs. In the event that any of the previous year’s Puk Juzuna semifinalists, runner-up, or champion no longer qualify through their parent club’s Pug Qusmyra affiliation, they will be extended an invitation to compete. The minimum number of Puk Juzuna competitors is 20, and the maximum is 24. Academies belonging to parent clubs which finished highest in the previous season of the Pug Qusmyra will be given preference to enter in the Round of 16. Depending on how many academies compete, this may mean that as many as all academies of the previous season’s top twelve Pug Qusmyra finishers will enter in the Round of 16, or that as few as only the academies of the previous season’s top eight Pug Qusmyra finishers will enter at that point.

Qusma Qualification to International Club Competitions

Qusma football clubs will be nominated by the national football governing body to compete in international competitions based on their performance that ryrak (season). The Qusma football schedule was established such that all international competitions will begin shortly after the Qusma domestic season ends, after a few weeks’ rest. The exact length of rest depends on the precise schedules of each of the various international club competitions. For recordkeeping & statistical purposes, international competitions are deemed to be a part of the season from which Qusma clubs qualified to those competitions from.

Qusmo is awarded a single entry in the UICA Champions’ Cup. This will be awarded to the Pug Qusmyra champion.

Qusmo is awarded three entries in the UICA Globe Cup. The first entry will be awarded to the Pug Qusmyra runner-up, the second entry will be awarded to the club which finished Pug Qusmyra in third place, & the final entry will be awarded to the club which finished Pug Qusmyra in fourth place.

Qusmo is awarded three entries in the UICA Series B Champions’ Cup. These will be awarded to all three Pug Qusma clubs which will be promoted to Pug Qusmyra. That means that the league champions, league runners-up, & Puk Buvanorata champions of Pug Qusma will be awarded Qusmo’s three UICA Series B Champions’ Cup entries.

Qusmo is awarded a single entry in the UICA Youth Cup. This will be awarded to the champion of Puk Juzuna.

Qusmo is awarded a single entry in the Rushmori Copa de Campeones. This will be awarded to the champion of Pug Qusmyra.

Qusmo is awarded a single entry in the Cygnus Cup Winners’ Cup. This will be awarded to the champion of Puk Zala.

Qusmo is awarded a single nomination in the Vilitian Cove Invitational Cup. This will be awarded to the champion of Puk Zama, unless this club has already received an invitation to another senior international club competition. In this case, this will be awarded to the Pug Qusmyra club which finished best in its league & has not yet received an invitation to another major senior international club competition.

Notes on Players, Squads, & Transfers

Each club may select 25 players for its squad, of which three must be goalkeepers, six must be attackers, & eight must be midfielders & defenders, respectively.

No player may play for two Qusma clubs in the same season. In the event that a player is released by a club, the club is responsible for fulfilling the entirety of the player’s salary for the remainder of the season. A Qusma club may release any of its players or sign players who belong to no club at any point during the season.

A Qusma club may not transfer a player to or from another other club except during the international transfer window. This window begins after all international club competitions of one season & ends before the beginning of the next Qusma domestic season. At this time, any transfers may be made, & squad limits do not apply. For the purposes of contract rules, this period is not considered a part of either the season preceding or following the transfer window.

A player that plays for a club may play for their club’s academy in officially sanctioned academy competitions if they are under the age of 20 at the beginning of the season.

No player may play in any officially sanctioned Qusma club competition or for any officially sanctioned Qusma club if they are not eligible to compete for the Qusma national football team.

Notes on the Inaugural Season

For the first season of officially sanctioned Qusma football, clubs did not have a credible, fair, objective, & universally accepted basis to be judged upon & given initial league & cup invitations. Thus, the clubs were judged & given these invitations subjectively &, at times, randomly.

The league pyramid system awards entries on the basis of the previous season’s performance. Clubs were assigned to league tiers on the basis of their home city’s populations, & clubs were assigned to leagues within those tiers on the basis of geography, with an effort made to preserve intracity derbies between clubs of the same tier.

Puk Zama awards entries on the basis of the previous season’s performance. Clubs were randomly assigned to participate in the inaugural Puk Zama such that each league received as many representatives as it would normally be entitled to. In addition, an extra representative from Pug Qusma was selected to set the competition field at 64.

Puk Zala awards automatic places in the Round of 32 on the basis of the previous season’s performance. These were assigned to one club from each opolq (city) represented in the inaugural season of Pug Qusmyra, as well as both Pug Qusmyra clubs from the capital city of Qanz.

Puk Juzuna awards automatic places in the Round of 16 on the basis of the previous season’s performance. These were assigned to one academy from each of the twelve largest cities represented in the inaugural season of Pug Qusmyra, corresponding to the same parent clubs which earned an automatic place in the Round of 32 of the inaugural edition of Puk Zala.

We are proud to be able to show you the very best that this nation has to offer. 320 clubs will be battling it out this year, and 20 will compete for the ultimate crown: the right to be the first club to hoist Qavax Puga Qusmyra. Who will be the one? Before we find out, let’s take a look at every club in the mix.

KF Atlant

Manager: Belaj-Cynav Ixi (57 y.o.)
Formation: 3 - 4 - 3

Player to Watch: 2 Lucex-Ilinx Opu (30) CB
Lucex-Ilinx is a terror in the defense. With a physical, punishing style of play, they are no stranger to fouls or even cards, but they are also an extremely effective way to end any opposition attack. Lucex-Ilinx is in their prime, & their dominance is the reason defensive-minded manager Belaj-Cynav Ixi feels free to play with only three in his back line.

Description:
This club starts & ends with the play of the defense, & especially that of Lucex-Ilinx Opu. The starting left & right backs are fairly young & quick, but Lucex-Ilinx has acted as a mentor to his teammates & has had some success in giving Jralv-Yamaj & Nirlo-Betva a physical mindset. For everyone Lucex-Ilinx hasn’t reached, the manager has, giving this club a hard-nosed identity. The midfield & attacking lines are alright, but if Atlant wants to make it to UICA play - and they are capable of doing that - Lucex-Ilinx & the rest of the defense will have to carry them there.

Predicted Finish: 3rd

KF Atlark

Colours: Black & Red
Manager: Nenzi-Upuln Tla (54 y.o.)
Formation: 4 - 3 - 3

Player to Watch: 1 Tanar-Matez Eva (28) GK
In a club without any true individual stars, Tanar-Matez is an interesting player to watch. They are often hot & cold, & their performance can vary quite wildly between matches. At their peak, they can be a top-notch keeper; at their worst, they can be a true klutz. Several games might be decided based on how well Tanar-Matez feels that particular day.

Description:
Atlem will likely stay in Pug Qusmyra next season & might even have a shot at a mid-table finish, but life won’t be easy for them. Atlem clearly is playing the little brother to intracity rival KF Atlant, & that is not going to be fun. Nenzi-Upuln needs to consolidate Atlem’s position in Pug Qusmyra & then build the team up to a point at which they can compete with other clubs - especially Atlant.

Predicted Finish: 15th

KF Brel

Colours: Black & Yellow
Manager: Karar-Prant Eva (71 y.o.)
Formation: 3 - 4 - 3

Player to Watch: 8 Falax-Ilinx Jan (20) AM
One X factor in Brel’s hopes this year is the playmaking of Falax-Ilinx. Falax-Ilinx has enough talent to be a starter on a Pug Qusmyra squad at the age of only 20, so they have great potential to develop in the future; that said, Falax-Ilinx seems a bit raw now. Brel fans hope that will change over the course of the year.

Description:
With one of the oldest managers in Pug Qusmyra, Brel reflects a conservative, defensive-minded mindset to football. Brel shouldn’t worry about relegation this season & has hope for the future, with several key players having many years left to play, especially Falax-Ilinx. However, Brel fans will have to look forward to that optimistic future in what doesn’t seem like what will be a great year.

Predicted Finish: 14th

KF Estraj

Colours: Red & Yellow
Manager: Cralt-Nirlo Fox (43 y.o.)
Formation: 3 - 5 - 2

Player to Watch: 10 Paliv-Xilit Max (23) SS
Paliv-Xilit is not just a young player, but possibly Estraj’s best. They have pace, finesse, & stamina that help them go anywhere from the opposing goal to deep in their own midfield - which already has quite a few players manning it. If Estraj is going to have success, this year or in the future, it seems that it would be built around Paliv-Xilit.

Description:
Estraj is a club which would be happy with a mid-table finish. However, Estraj is a club which has a good shot of getting a mid-table finish. Estraj has adopted an attacking mentality, & the exploits of players like Milor-Yunal, Xynat-Vralx, Denir-Mulpo, & Paliv-Xilit will go a long way to determining whether they can achieve the goals they have laid out for this season.

Predicted Finish: 13th

KF Fryvvyn

Colours: Blue & Bright Green
Manager: Jralv-Nexev Gla (45 y.o.)
Formation: 3 - 4 - 3

Player to Watch: 9 Slokt-Xalan Tla (20) LW
Slokt-Xalan is an interesting prospect. One of the quickest left wings in Pug Qusmyra, they have a lot of potential to get around opposing defenses & make plays. However, they may have to make a lot of those plays themself.

Description:
Fryvvyn is a side which is merely hoping to stay up this season. Their status in the top flight is far from secure, & a lot of that has to do with the poor squad they have put together around Slokt-Xalan. The manager will likely take a lot of credit if things go well, but if things go south - & they certainly could in a hurry, despite the presence of their left wing forward - Jralv-Nexev will likely take most of the blame.

Predicted Finish: 16th

KF Koflir

Manager: Harta-Yunal Den (72 y.o.)
Formation: 4 - 3 - 3

Player to Watch: 6 Kynda-Sevet Pec (19) LM
Kynda-Sevet will be a very interesting player to keep tabs on throughout the course of the season. They are lightning-quick, but they are also quite slight, & they are vulnerable to a physical challenge. Kynda-Sevet needs to work on their dribbling & must make better decisions on the pitch, but there is a reason they are starting for this good Pug Qusmyra side.

Description:
A lot of the attention will surely be heaped on Kynda-Sevet - & for good reason, as only one other Pug Qusmyra player on a first-choice Starting XI is younger - but this club is good because everyone plays well. Koflir hopes to start off strong & build off of Kynda-Sevet in the years to come. They might be able to flirt with UICA spots, but they’ll likely be able to mount serious challenges only later.

Predicted Finish: 8th

KF Kozon

Formation: 3 - 4 - 3

Player to Watch: 4 Dynom-Intov Dar (26) RB
Dynom-Intov is not our Player to Watch because he’s Kozon’s best; in fact, there’s a chance he might be the worst out of the Starting XI. Dynom-Intov is the Achilles heel of this team, & many clubs will likely exploit Kozon through his flank. That said, Dynom-Intov probably is the best option Kozon has at the position. It will be interesting to see if Jonto-Alfan will stick by their player or try other options.

Description:
Kozon had high hopes early in the offseason, but as the year went on & major signings went to other clubs, Jonto-Alfan & the rest of the fan base slowly began to realize that they would be the odd club out. They don’t really have any great players, especially on the back end. Jonto-Alfan has opted to put his best players on the field at all times - hence why the defense is so few in numbers - but Kozon’s best isn’t Pug Qusmyra’s best. Kozon will be hoping to get another shot at an offseason in Pug Qusmyra, but will they?

Predicted Finish: 18th

KF Lilnim

Player to Watch: 5 Xilit-Xilit Waz (23) LB
Yes, due to traditional Qusma naming customs, this player’s family name is Xilit-Xilit. But that’s not why they are our Player to Watch. Well, that’s not the whole reason why they’re our Player to Watch. Xilit-Xilit is a player that is prone to streakiness; either they feel hot or they feel cold, & they can feel that way for weeks or even a couple months on end. It really makes you wonder which player is going to step out onto the pitch each day: Xilit or Xilit.

Description:
Winad-Lenpi is a thoroughly defensive-minded manager, & that focus has been transmitted to his team. Lilnim looks to be the only club in Pug Qusmyra to employ five players in defense in their first choice starting XI. However, Lilnim is not parking the bus just so that it can limit the damage done to it. Lilnim is a solidly mid-table team, & hopes to be the one to give others some damage with watertight defense.

Predicted Finish: 12th

KF Mostew

Player to Watch: 4 Julad-Kepex Tok (32) LB
Simply put, Julad-Kepex should not be playing in a first choice XI for a Pug Qusmyra side. They have feet of lead, & that is simply unacceptable for a fullback. Time after time, Julad-Kepex will be beat by the defense this season. Will they still be playing in the first choice XI by the end of the season?

Description:
One team has to finish last. It seems as though Mostew could very well be that team. Mostew has no good players, as highlighted by the fact that they have to put a product like Julad-Kepex out on the pitch. Fans are bracing for a long & difficult season ahead & are merely hoping that Mastad Mostewa will play host to Pug Qusmyra football next year.

Predicted Finish: 20th

KF Niom

Manager: Vulav-Wanar Tla (49 y.o.)
Formation: 4 - 4 - 2

Player to Watch: 3 Cunix-Betva Tla (27) CB
Cunix-Betva has the technical & physical qualities needed to succeed in Pug Qusmyra. They are not overly aggressive, but they are tough to get around. They will be the anchor of the defense & have already gotten a lot of respect around the league for their tough but fair play.

Description:
Niom fans have something to be excited about this season. It looks as though they’ll have a great one. Niom will expect to end the year somewhere around the UICA Globe Cup places, but it would be a major challenge to actually qualify. However, anchored by a strong defense & complemented by a good attack, Niom will be a tough team for nearly any Pug Qusmyra squad to play.

Predicted Finish: 6th

KF Poldanz

Manager: Vralx-Ucyxi Lec (57 y.o.)
Formation: 3 - 4 - 3

Player to Watch: 11 Xilit-Zaxac Yol (23) ST
Xilit-Zaxac is one of the best strikers Qusmo has. They have a talent for knowing the composition of the opposing defense & how to beat it. They also have the feet you need to do just that. The manager & the fans know that they have a special talent plying their trade in Polan, & their stardom will be vaulted by the position they play & the team they play for.

Description:
Poldanz wants trophies. They have a fantastic squad from top to bottom, & so much attention is focussed on Xilit-Zaxac that the phenomenal, seemingly ageless play of Lynul-Gavax in right midfield goes almost unnoticed. That’s the recipe for a great season, & it looks like they’ll have one. The main question for Poldanz, it seems, is whether they will be playing in the UICA Globe Cup or the UICA Champions’ Cup at the end of this season.

Predicted Finish: 2nd

KF Poljak

Player to Watch: 9 Hynym-Gelan Zyn (30) AM
Hynym-Gelan is a good player, & they know how to lead an attack. They are a proficient & patient passer who waits for the play to develop in front of them. Their age seems to be just starting to creep up on them, though, so they are hoping that their next few seasons will be good before they have to bow out.

Description:
Poljak is a decent team, & they should land midtable. However, they just don’t have the starpower of their intracity rivals, & they lack the top-to-bottom talent of the KF Poldanz roster as a whole. That will mean that Poljak will not garner nearly as much attention as the other club in Polan, but they should feel confident about their ability to play with most other teams in Pug Qusmyra.

Predicted Finish: 11th

They are the beating heart & soul of this club, & they elevate the play of the rest of their squad with their own passionate, fearless, tireless, & superb performances.

Description:
Anything but Qavax Pug Qusmyra this season will be seen as a disappointment in Qanz. Qastyr has both the starpower & the depth to make a tear through Pug Qusmyra. Few clubs stand in a position even to challenge the titans of the capital city, & Qastyr hopes that this season will be the beginning of a true dynasty. A place in the UICA Champions’ Cup is not certain, by any means, but it looks tantalizingly in sight.

KF Qasym

Dalox-Lenpi seems to be a part of the Qasym starting XI as much for future seasons as this one. Tlanx-Avarn wants their club to prioritize the development of young players who could play for many seasons, & Dalox-Lenpi is both the youngest member of the club & an example of a player that is being played to gain experience for the future.

Description:
Tlanx-Avarn knows that Qasym is likely going to be playing second fiddle within Qanz for quite a while, so they have decided to prioritize getting better for future seasons rather than trying to compete now. Tlanx-Avarn does not really see much difference between 8th & 13th - they are both far from UICA spots or from relegation. The manager has crafted this team, then, to be mid-table this season & continue to improve in the years following - & maybe even eventually rival the likes of KF Qastyr.

KF Rejin

Ozolx-Mazur is a player that can run with the best of them. They have more stamina than pure speed, so their effect is more pronounced late, when the opposition is more tired; that said, they are pretty quick from the first minute, too. If Rejin needs a late goal to snatch a point or three, they will likely look to Ozolx-Mazur, who can use their legs to open up the defense for a pass or take a shot themself.

Description:
One of the most interesting storylines for this season seems to be whether Rejin can come out ahead of KF Trew. Pundits generally agree on a top three for this season, but they are quite evenly split on who might earn the last UICA Globe Cup spot. Rejin hopes that their counterattacking tactics can elevate them to an invitation to play abroad.

KF Trew

For Trew fans, Rilan-Jerat will likely be the most exciting player in the league. Rilan-Jerat already has the distinction of being one of only three eighteen-year-olds in Pug Qusmyra (& one of two on Trew’s roster), & the only one to be on a first-choice Starting XI. With lightning quickness & an uncanny knack for goal, pundits are hailing him as a future star of the Qusma national team. Trew fans will likely argue that he could be a national team star now - and they have a good argument.

Description:
This club is defined by their focus on attack & their focus on youth in attack. Three young forwards are aided by an attacking midfielder who isn’t too old, either; the average age of the four is only 21. The team, of course, is led by the electric play of Rilan-Jerat, & there is a good chance that Rilan-Jerat could lead them all the way to the UICA Globe Cup. And if this team is this good now, fans will salivate to think of their potential five years down the road.

KF Trosoc

If Trosoc is to have much success this season, it likely will be because of Xynat-Evela. Xynat-Evela is not a phenomenal player, but they do have what it takes to bail their team out of bad situations from time to time - &, with their surrounding cast, it seems like they will be called into that role often.

Description:
This year, every Pug Qusmyra derby seems one-sided, & this one is no exception. KF Trew will be expected to play meaningful football late into the year in a quest for the UICA Globe Cup; Trosoc will also be expected to have important matches late in the season, but merely to stay in the top flight. Trosoc just does not have the squad to give them much hope entering this season.

KF Vlonz

Helek-Nenzi is a player that has the ability to be great in Pug Qusmyra. They have good pace, can dribble decently, & are beginning to show signs of vision on the ball. They likely won’t be the main reason this side will end up where it will, but they might be able to boost Vlonz a couple spots if they have a breakout year - or drop them a couple if they have a dud season.

Description:
Led by a very young & charismatic manager, Vlonz is hoping that they can break through all the chatter about a race for the UICA Globe Cup between KF Trew & KF Rejin to claim a spot themselves. They might threaten, but they would certainly be a dark horse to actually land in the top four. That said, they seem to be a solid mid-table team, & they’ll be strong this year even if they don’t get the chance to prove it outside Qusmo. Even if that is so, Eflat-Cralt isn’t afraid of declaring to the world how great their team is.

KF Werzin

On a club with two 20-year-olds in the Starting XI, Yamaj-Blonz is a player that could emerge as a real X factor for Werzin. The key is whether they can develop the kind of decision-making skills needed for someone expected to man the centre of the midfield. They are pretty good on their defense for a centre midfielder, but can they blossom into an effective cog in the attack?

Description:
Werzin is certainly expected to be a solid team, but it has the potential to do a lot more than what the pundits have said. One key is whether Yamaj-Blonz & Ucyxi-Slokt can make good strides towards becoming good offensive players. Another key is whether their defense can be good enough to make offensive production mean anything. If their defense holds decent & their offense excels, they could flirt with a spot in the UICA Globe Cup, though they likely won’t be able to go all the way.

The manager is hoping to develop younger talent, & Dynom-Tlanx is the only player on Zwac’s first choice Starting XI to be over the age of 26. This is due, in part, to the fact that Dynom-Tlanx still has the legs to keep up with most opposition forwards. If their club is to stay up, Dynom-Tlanx is going to have to shut down his side of the pitch.

Description:
Avarn-Oxolt is in a tough spot. Their club is not expected to finish last, but it is expected to be playing in Pug Qusma next season. They have a lot of younger players, but they don’t really have any true gem prospects. If they can manage to stay in Pug Qusmyra for next season, they will become extremely popular in Zwall.

Three will go on to Pug Qusmyra next season, & at least three will get to play abroad at the end of this season. I'd like to make a quick OOC note on Ryrak Bey of Fuzpon Qusma. As I was in the middle of scorinating my last event, xkorinator crashed. Today, Fuzpon Qusma announced its preparations for the upcoming qualifiers for the eightieth edition of the World Cup, & the first of which Qusmo will attempt to qualify for. To begin the news conference, Avarn-Oxolt Ban was announced as the manager for the national team, leaving their former club of KF Zwac.

"Ban has done an amazing job in Zwall over the past season, & we thought that they would be the best choice to lead Qusmo into its first international competitions. As you all know, Zwac was essentially written off before the first kickoff, & it was widely picked to go down to Pug Qusma next season. Instead, Ban was able to lead their side to a mid-table finish six spots ahead of the Spon Qusma preseason predictions. No manager in either Pug Qusmyra or Pug Qusma was able to beat their preseason predictions by more than that margin. They have shown tremendous success so far, & we are hopeful that they'll do so again."

After their introductions, the 66-year-old Avarn-Oxolt took the podium. "Thank you. As you know, we've done a lot more at Mastad Zwalla than anyone ever thought we could. We were pegged to finish at the very bottom, but we showed that we could compete every week. I'm so proud of what we've been able to accomplish at Zwall, but I just couldn't pass up a chance to lead my country. I hope that we'll be able to enjoy some great success with the national squad, too."

After being asked if Fuzpon Qusma had done any other preparations for the qualifying tournament, Avarn-Oxolt assured them that everything was running smoothly. "To answer your question directly, yes, we have decided to make Mastad Qusma in our capital of Qanz our home stadium. We will be using that for the majority of the qualification process. We can give you a list of which stadia will be used which day, specifically, because I haven't bothered to memorize that yet, to be perfectly honest with you."

"However, we've done a lot more than just look at where we're going to play. We've also done a lot of work selecting who we're going to play. Fuzpon Qusma invited 50 players - 15 defenders, midfielders, & forwards each, & five goalkeepers - to a training camp. At that camp, we called up twenty-five players to our first national team. There were a lot of tough choices, but, ultimately, we had to pare it down. We have three goalkeepers, eight defenders, eight midfielders, & six forwards, just like a club roster. Y'know, a really, really good Pug Qusmyra roster," the manager quipped. "We might call a few more players up over the course of the qualification cycle, depending on how things go, but that's what we're going to start with."

The last question related to the all-important Starting XI for qualification. "I have decided what my Starting XI for the match against Wolves Clans will be, but I'm hoping to keep that under wraps until match day. I want to keep the other side guessing, you know? You all know that I put a 3-5-2 in place at Zwac, & I won't lie that that's one of our options, but we'll adjust our lineup on a day to day basis, depending on performance & opponent. After all, I think Ceni & Gopnikea might merit slightly different treatment in our preparation."

The manager was then asked about their hopes for the tournament. "You know, I took Zwac from a predicted place of 19th all the way to 13th in the final table. Now, I'm not terribly high on our chances to make it from Pot 9 to third, much less qualify, but I'm shooting for around seventh. In order to do that, we've got to get out to a fast start, frankly. If we can pick up seven points from our first three matches, that'd be an amazing start to things. I do think that's possible. We're going to host 256th-ranked Wolves Clans on Match Day 1 & unranked Gopnikea on Match Day 3. If we can win those matches & maybe even find a way to snatch a draw in Beepee, we'd be on a great trajectory before we hit the really tough portion of our schedule."

With that, Qusmo's new manager took his leave. "Sorry, all, but I have to go get the team ready to play Wolves Clans. It's going to be a tough, hard-fought campaign, but I know that these players can work hard & pull off something memorable. I'll see you again after the game in Qanz."

A Fuzpon Qusma staffer handed out the following printout of where Qusma would host each of its home matches during the qualifying campaign, just as Avarn-Oxolt had approved during the press conference.

However, the staffer also accidentally handed out papers indicating the players at the national team training camp, the players that Avarn-Oxolt called up to the national team, & Avarn-Oxolt's first choice XI. The staffer likely won't last long at Fuzpon Qusma, but we're happy to publish this information that quite literally fell into our laps. It indicated that, just as we would have guessed & as they hinted at, Avarn-Oxolt will use a 3-5-2 formation to start the Qusma qualifying campaign against Wolves Clans - & possibly after that, too. Furious that his lineup against Wolves Clans has been leaked to the media, manager Avarn-Oxolt Ban has decided that any tactical advantage that could have been obtained from concealing his lineup has been lost; instead, he has decided to talk up each of his picks, in the face of mounting controversy against them.

GK • № 1 • Xynat-Evela Cuf • 26 y.o. • KF Trosoc

KF Trosoc unexpectedly lept squarely into midtable, far from the relegation zone they were expected to be in by the end of the Pug Qusmyra season. Xynat-Evela Cuf’s breakout year was the main reason why they beat their preseason expectations by six spots. Given the subpar lineup around them this season, Xynat-Evela has gained a lot of experience finding ways to bail his defense out when it completely breaks down in front of him, even if he has to flail a bit in order to get the job done. As the starting goalkeeper for an unranked national team heading into World Cup play, that experience will likely come in handy.

CB • № 2 • Lucex-Ilinx Opu • 30 y.o. • KF Atlant

KF Atlant had by far the best defense in Pug Qusmyra last season, yielding only 0.6 goals per match - & that was with a back three where two of the starting defenders were fullbacks. The reason Atlant’s defense was so good is their lone starting centreback, Lucex-Ilinx Opu. Lucex-Ilinx is not afraid to get their kit dirty - or, sometimes, even play dirty, if the referee doesn’t see it. No one else on the Qusmo national team roster is even remotely close to Lucex-Ilinx in their physicality & style of play. Given their history of crunching tackles, perhaps that’s best for everyone’s injury reports.

CB • № 3 • Yelto-Alfan Ono • 24 y.o. • KF Koflir

KF Koflir was a club of attrition last season; it only scored 40 goals in 38 matches, but it only conceded 30, which made them the only club besides KF Atlant to yield less than a goal a match. Much of that was because of Yelto-Alfan Ono, who has started to develop some leadership on the back line for his club side. Yelto-Alfan is used to a four-player back line, however, & there are some concerns that they won’t be able to find the kind of chemistry needed to successfully operate a three-player line, especially early on in the campaign & given how frequently the back line will likely be challenged by high class opposition.

CB • № 4 • Cunix-Betva Tla • 27 y.o. • KF Niom

The only representative from their club to receive a national team call up, KF Niom captain Cunix-Betva Tla has emerged as a leader for the national team, too. Though a midtable side, Niom had the third-best defense in Pug Qusmyra last season - behind Atlant & Koflir, of course. Even if that helped get Cunix-Betva a call up, however, what has given them a place on the first choice Starting XI is their consistent displays of superb levels of sportsmanship. That has earned them respect throughout Pug Qusmyra, even from opposing managers, players, & fans. They are not overly physical; instead, they rely on their technical skills, which are above average for a Pug Qusmyra centreback. However, they’ll be expected to struggle against many of the more technically gifted strikers they’ll be expected to face during the qualification campaign.

DM • № 5 • Yunal-Julad Waz • 25 y.o. • KF Poldanz

KF Poldanz was a remarkably well-balanced club this year, boasting the second-best offense & fourth-best defense in Pug Qusmyra. Much of that record is attributable to Yunal-Julad Waz, who plays as a defensive midfielder for their club but will be asked by the manager to play as a part of a centre midfield triangle. Yunal-Julad has great vision for a Pug Qusmyra player, & much of their talent comes from smart play rather than any physical traits; they prefer to sit back, read the opposing defense, & then make plays accordingly. Without the advantage of their wits, they likely would be quickly overmatched in both pace & physicality by many of those they will face during the campaign.

CM • № 6 • Ilinx-Kepex Zev • 31 y.o. • KF Qastyr

Though the first season of Pug Qusmyra is not technically yet done, KF Qastyr’s captain has emerged as a favourite for player of the year. Ilinx-Kepex Zev are truly what makes their title-winning club the domestic powerhouse they have quickly proven themselves to be, with both fantastic play & fantastic heart. They play all across the field, unafraid to make a tackle in their own box or take a shot in the opposition’s. They rarely, if ever, showed any fatigue over the course of the league season, though that might change with a grueling slate of fixtures spread out so far & against such top class opposition. Ilinx-Kepex has emerged as the captain & leader of the national team, as their seemingly fearless & tireless play motivates their teammates to do even better on the pitch.

AM • № 7 • Ilinx-Vulav Ixi • 25 y.o. • KF Poldanz

KF Poldanz boasts a great centre midfield for Pug Qusmyra; both of their own players in that position have made it onto the national team’s first choice Starting XI. Ilinx-Vulav has a lot of experience with national team teammate Yunal-Julad Waz as the tip of their club’s midfield diamond, & that chemistry will likely serve them well in the centre midfield triangle. Though asked to take a more general role as a centre midfielder rather than an attacking midfielder, Ilinx-Vulav is itching to help create chances. They have a bit of pace, but their main weapon is a keen sense of timing for through balls. The chemistry they already have with key teammates on the national team lineup should be highly conducive to just that.

LM • № 8 • Kynda-Sevet Pec • 19 y.o. • KF Koflir

Only two Pug Qusmyra starters were younger than 20 this season, & Kynda-Sevet Pec was one of them. They got KF Koflir to the brink of international competition qualification this season on the basis of fantastic pace. They are one of the fastest players in Pug Qusmyra, which already places quite a lot of emphasis on speed. They make some poor choices on the ball that they need to clear up, & they need to dribble better. They need to protect the ball better, as they are quite slight & no match for a physical challenge, especially from the much more physical players they are likely to see in service of the national team; however, they can come flying quickly out of left midfield to create opportunities for others up front or have a go at it themselves.

RM • № 9 • Forzu-Ralox Kal • 25 y.o. • KF Qastyr

Poldanz is not the only club well-represented in the national team midfield; KF Qastyr has two representatives as well. Forzu-Ralox Kal is a great player on the right side, where they bring suitable pace & stamina, & they also have chemistry with national team captain Ilinx-Kepex Zev from the recent club season. The player pool for right midfielder is rather weak in Qusmo, but that doesn’t mean that they’re bad, necessarily. They will be relied on primarily to stretch the defense out & to prevent them from focussing only on the centre & left of the pitch; however, some questions have emerged over the accuracy of Forzu-Ralox’s passing, especially that of his crosses.

ST • № 10 • Rilan-Jerat Nev • 18 y.o. • KF Trew

Rilan-Jerat Nev is one of the most exciting young players in Pug Qusmyra today & the youngest starter in the entire league. Some controversy did erupt when it emerged that Rilan-Jerat was chosen for the Starting XI, but they have some major accomplishments under their belt. They scored a goal on the final matchday of the Pug Qusmyra season that ultimately put KF Trew through to the UICA Globe Cup, & they demolished the opposition in Puk Juzuna to lead the Trew U-20 side to the UICA Youth Cup. They are one of the quickest players in a generally quick league, & they just seem to know where to put the ball to get it past the keeper; however, their confidence sometimes goes too far, & they try to make a run on goal when they really should just pass. They need to work on dribbling, passing, & staving off hard challenges, but the Trew fan base love them already.

ST • № 11 • Xilit-Zaxac Yol • 23 y.o. • KF Poldanz

Xilit-Zaxac Yol rounds out the national team contingent from KF Poldanz. Xilit-Zaxac may head only the second-best attack in Pug Qusmyra, but they are likely Pug Qusmyra’s best striker. They have great pace & are fantastic at finishing. Most of all, though, they play intelligently. They always seem to know where the ball is & where the player who is marking them is, & they use that to their best advantage. A common sight at KF Poldanz is a ball played deep in the midfield or even the defense by Yunal-Julad Waz to Ilinx-Vulav Ixi, who would promptly play a through ball to Xilit-Zaxac Yol, who would then relentlessly finish. It seems no coincidence that all three of those players are also on the national team roster, but of those KF Poldanz players, it is undoubtedly Xilit-Zaxac Yol who is the best on this team.

In a prepared statement, the manager also released details on the Qusma team's kits. "I was disappointed to learn that a member of the Fuzpon Qusma organization accidentally attached information on our lineup rather than on our kits, which was what was intended to be on those extra pages handed to the media. Our home kit will be in our national colours, red & gold. Emblematic of our national flag, a thick two-colour sash will run from the right shoulder down to the left hip, both front & back. The top sash colour will be gold, & the bottom sash colour will be red. Above the sash will be a red field, while below the sash will be a gold field. Our shorts will be red & our socks will be gold. On the back, we will have a large red circle outlined in gold to recall our flag, break the sash, & allow clearer kit numbers, which will be printed in gold, just like the sun on our flag. Highlights throughout the kit will be gold. Our clash kit will be white with the full, uninterrupted, two-colour sash on front & back. We will have black numbers & red highlights, complemented by the same red shorts & gold socks. Our goalkeepers' kits will be black with the sash on the front side only, with white numbers, gold highlights, black shorts, & black socks. We believe that these kits are not only striking, but will represent our country well internationally. We are proud to represent Qusmo, & we are looking forward to starting the qualifying campaign against Wolves Clans in Qanz."

A popular sport radio host in Qusmo has stirred controversy with their vocal criticism of the Qusma national team just ahead of their maiden World Cup qualifying campaign.

"Look, I know we all know it, but I'll be the one to come out & say it. Avarn-Oxolt Ban should not be managing the national team. And the selections they made for the national team squad prove that."

"I mean, let's look at the manager themself. What record do they have? They managed a club that finished thirteenth in Pug Qusmyra. There are a dozen more qualified managers in our own domestic league, for crying out loud! I know that Fuzpon Qusma has said that Zwac did less awfully than they were expected to, but that doesn't mean they actually did well. And other managers did just as well as Avarn-Oxolt - look at Cralt-Nirlo Fox at Estraj or even Lynul-Zorno Dar at Trosoc. They both beat expectations by six slots, too, but their expectations weren't of finishing dead last to everyone except Mostew. Beating their preseason expectations was actually an accomplishment. The reason that Cralt-Nirlo & Lynul-Zorno chose to stay at their sides is because they thought they had good club squads, & they didn't want to mess with their job security by taking charge of the national team. Avarn-Oxolt knows that what they did at Zwac was a fluke, & they won't be able to do it again; that's why they leaped at the opportunity to manage another bad team."

"And I'll stand by that. Qusmo could be a decent side, but Avarn-Oxolt wrecked it. Our manager has degraded the quality of our national team. Let's look at the players Avarn-Oxolt picked for their squad. Are they serious? Qastyr had the best offense in the league; it wasn't even close. That's why they won both Puk Zama & Pug Qusmyra. That's why they were the only Qusma club to make it to the Globe Cup playoff round. Yet they got less players on the starting XI & on the 25-player roster as a whole than other clubs, like Poldanz. And they didn't place a single player on the starting XI attack. The striker who led that 106-goal offense isn't even on the roster. This is unbelievable. What is Avarn-Oxolt thinking?"

"Now, I know that a lot of you are fans of Rilan-Jerat Nev. Sure, I get it. The kid's young. He beat up on other kids in Puk Juzuna. But he doesn't belong in the national team starting XI. Now, I'm not saying he won't ever be that good, or that he won't get better in the future - but Rilan-Jerat is a kid. He doesn't have the experience, he doesn't have the poise. That's why Trew got blown out of the water in the very first preliminary round of the Globe Cup. They might become worthy of the national team shirt sometime in the future, but that time is not now."

"But that's not the only bad decision Avarn-Oxolt made with regards to personnel. Kynda-Sevet Pec is another kid put in there for no good reason. Sure, they're quick. Sure, they're young, & they'll have some positive press for practically being a baby. But they're not a good player. They don't protect the ball, they can't dribble, & they make countless boneheaded decisions on the ball. The outside midfield is just bad in general. And has Avarn-Oxolt forgotten that the point of a 3-5-2 is to have those midfielders double back to the defense when the opposition is pressing forward? It sure seems like it, based on the players they have selected. They're only meant to go forward, not provide a bit of security in back. And Forzu-Ralox Kal plays so poorly that sometimes they can't even do that. If I had to bet my life on a Forzu-Ralox cross landing in the same city as their target, I'd start preparing my last rites."

"Avarn-Oxolt Ban is a bad manager, &, true to form, they've managed this club awfully. Avarn-Oxolt says they want to manage Qusmo to seventh. Seventh? Really? I'd understand that unranked Gopnikea & 256th-ranked Wolves Clans are beatable foes, but who else does Avarn-Oxolt think we'll vault? Kandorith? Beepee? And they think they'll draw against Beepee in Beepee, in our national team's first trip abroad? Let me be clear: We'll finish ninth, at best. We won't be able to get a win against Wolves Clans in Qanz, we'll lose to Beepee on match day two, & we'll struggle throughout the entire campaign to pick up any points at all - & that's all because of Avarn-Oxolt Ban. Fuzpon Qusma needs to fire them immediately if it wants to salvage anything out of this campaign."

As they were preparing for their first match as national team manager, Avarn-Oxolt Ban was not available for comment.

Qusmo National Team wins in first match

Qusmo’s national team is in the midst of wild celebrations in the wake of their victory over Wolves Clans. Ilinx-Kepex Zev scored in stoppage time to give their nation a 1-0 victory in its first ever match. As the beginning of a World Cup qualifying campaign, it was a great result for the Qusmi’y.

After the match, star midfielder Ilinx-Kepex Zev told reporters that they were most proud of the opportunity to captain their national team in its first-ever match. “When I heard our anthem being played, it gave me such amazing pride. I couldn’t not give my country every bit of effort I had within me to win. And that’s just what we did.”

Ilinx-Kepex was quick to deflect praise, however. “It was really a fantastic effort all around to win. If our defense hadn’t been solid, if Cuf hadn’t made some saves, if the other midfielders hadn’t won us possession, if our forwards hadn’t kept the relentless pressure up, we wouldn’t have been in the position to win with such a late goal.”

Indeed, the Qusma team played superbly. From the opening whistle, Qusmo seemed eager to play in front of a raucous home crowd in Qanz, & they rewarded their supporters with an immediate barrage on the Wolves Clans goal. In the first fifteen minutes, Qusma players recorded seven shots, including several balls that the Wolves Clans keeper deflected away from their net; however, excellent goalkeeping play, some opportune defensive work, & a couple of offside calls kept the match scoreless.

“Certainly, I thought we should have been up 2-0, at least, after the first fifteen. I don’t think those goals should have been disallowed,” said Rilan-Jerat Nev after the match. Fortunately, it proved not to matter for the final result. Wolves Clans were able to regroup after the first precarious quarter hour, & they even got two good looks on goal late in the first half.

“Fantastic job by [Qusma goalkeeper Xynat-Evela] Cuf today. They’ve proven time & time again that they deserve to don the national team kit, & they proved that today. They made some awfully difficult saves to preserve our clean sheet today, & that’s what really made the difference,” glowed manager Avarn-Oxolt Ban. “All of our players did a fantastic job, & Cuf was really one of the best.”

The match was not over yet, however. After two promising attacks early in the second half were ended prematurely by poor crosses from midfielder Forzu-Ralox Kal, they were substituted off in the fifty-ninth minute, with Jralv-Nexev Pec coming on in their place. “Kal was just nervous, I think,” explained Avarn-Oxolt. “It’s perfectly understandable; it’s nil-nil at home in a World Cup qualifier that happens to be your country’s first-ever international match. It’s no wonder why Kal had a bit of nerves today. I think they’ll be fine for our next match, against Beepee, though.”

That wasn’t their only substitution of the match, as left midfielder Kynda-Sevet Pec & centreback Yelto-Alfan Ono were replaced by Ozolx-Mazur Guv & Zenon-Gerol Kal, respectively, in a double substitution in the eighty-third minute. “At that point, it’s the end of the match, & our players were tired. We were trying to both make sure we held on to one point & also tried to pick up three. We needed fresh legs both in front & in back to make sure that happened,” clarified Avarn-Oxolt. “It’s not that they played poorly; they were just a bit tired, & I felt that some fresher bodies would help the team over the last ten minutes of the match.”

Ultimately, it was not any of Avarn-Oxolt’s substitutes that made the difference; it was the captain, Ilinx-Kepex Zev. During the short stoppage of play extended for the substitution, they tried to rally as many Qusma players as were within earshot to finish the match strong. “Honestly, I didn’t really hear what Zev was saying, but I saw that he somehow still had energy & was still going to give it his all. That motivated me to push myself even farther over the last few minutes of the match, too,” striker Xilit-Zaxac Yol revealed to reporters afterwards. “That one seems virtually tireless. It’s really amazing to watch.”

Amazing it was, as Ilinx-Kepex made a critical standing tackle just outside Qusmo’s box in the ninetieth minute of the match. They dribbled forward, waiting for options to develop, but the midfielder marking them slipped, & then it looked as if Ilinx-Kepex might be able to pull something off on their own. They sprinted forward with phenomenal pace, considering what they had already put themselves through on the day, & eventually was able to slot the ball into the top right corner of the post from twenty yards out in the face of an onrushing Wolves Clans defender in the second minute of stoppage time.

As their teammates mobbed them, Mastad Qusma became a cacophony of sound, & Ilinx-Kepex was seen visibly crying. “I’m telling you, nothing compares. Absolutely nothing. Even thinking about it now, I’m getting somewhat emotional,” confessed the captain. “What an amazing honour it is to be on this team, & to lead it. And to score like that, in front of these fans, in such a momentous situation, it’s simply indescribable. I’m so grateful to all those who made this possible for me, both my teammates on the pitch today & those who helped me along my way.”

The national team has a while yet to go on its way, as this was the first of eighteen World Cup qualifying matches it will play before play kicks off in Starblydia & the Equestrian States. Manager Avarn-Oxolt has previously expressed their desire to take a point from match day two, against the reigning Baptism of Fire champions Beepee at Pinewoods Stadium. “Of course, it’s going to be an extremely difficult match. It’s going to take all these players have. But, from how they played today, I think they can do it. I know they can do it,” vowed Avarn-Oxolt.

Beepee lost in heartbreaking fashion to open their qualifying campaign; they conceded a goal off a free kick in the eighty-ninth minute to seventeenth-ranked Ceni to lose 1-0 on the road. In many ways, it was the opposite of what the Qusmi’y were treated to. Qusmo hopes, however, that Beepee won’t get redemption soon. They have proved today that Qusmo has come to play, & that it has come to win.

“Hey, it’s Morning Sport!”

“What? No, turn that off,” yelled Rilan-Jerat Nev from the next room. “I don’t like that one.”

“Hey, but I like it! & I want to listen to it!”

The radio blared, “Hello from Morning Sport. Today, we reflect on the Qusma national team’s victory in Qanz over Wolves Clans. A good result by them, sure, but I challenge the team: next time, when you go out on the pitch at home against a team not ranked in the top 250, maybe score within the first ninety minutes.”

“I’m serious, turn it off.”

“Oh, come on, let me listen to it!”

“Let’s hand a lot of props off to Ilinx-Kepex Zev. They’re practically a national hero now. Of course, that’s perfectly understandable; they saved their team from utter disgrace in Qanz. How terrible is it that we couldn’t find net once until some kid on the other side tripped over their own shoelaces & let Ilinx-Kepex find space for a shot? How many times did we have a perfectly good attack? How many times was it squandered by players not knowing where the net was or what the offside rule was? Ilinx-Kepex -”

“I said shut it off!” barked Rilan-Jerat.

The radio turned off, & in the silence that followed, Nev turned the commentator’s thoughts over in their head. That sportscaster was clearly talking about them. They had been flagged for offside twice in the first fifteen minutes, when it looked like Qusmo was playing its best throughout the whole match. Rilan-Jerat put the ball into the back of the net twice, & some linesperson from the edge of the multiverse decided they wanted to wave a flag.

There was nothing offside about it. Rilan-Jerat knew that they should have been Qusmo’s first-ever international goalscorer - & they should have had a brace, too. The thought that they were doubted for a second made them furious - & motivated them to prove once & for all that they were worthy of playing for the Qusma national team.

Qusmo National Team dominant in Beepee

“Yes! Yes! Oh, wow, yes!”

The words of national team manager Avarn-Oxolt Ban say it all today, as the Qusmi’y are in raptures with their most recent performance: a 4-0 thrashing of Beepee in Fuzpon Qusma’s first match abroad.

“I can’t say enough about how amazing our players were today. It really was like a dream, almost,” gushed Avarn-Oxolt after the match. “We were clean, crisp, & laser-focused throughout the whole ninety minutes. We controlled it from start to finish. It was truly a fantastic match.”

Just like in the World Cup opener against Wolves Clans, Qusmo started strong; they kept Beepee from ever really threatening in the hosts’ final third in the first fifteen minutes, & the visitors had begun to probe the Beepeean defense by that point. After a few trying runs were taken care of by Beepee, an Ilinx-Vulav Ixi through ball found striker Xilit-Zaxac Yol, who calmly slotted it past the keeper to claim first blood in the nineteenth minute.

The Qusmi’y did not let up from there, as they continued to put pressure on the Beepeeans. Qusmo kept making runs, & Beepee kept looking like it was playing from its back foot. Striker Rilan-Jerat Nev thought they had scored Qusmo’s second goal of the match in the thirty-second minute, but their goal was disallowed for a clear offside.

After that, Beepee started to gain some momentum, as they were able to finally get dangerous crosses into the box; centrebacks Cunix-Betva Tla & Yelto-Alfan Ono were each able to make one important clearance each to keep Xynat-Evela Cuf from having to work too hard between the posts, however. After Yelto-Alfan got the ball out, it was passed to right midfielder Forzu-Ralox Kal. Forzu-Ralox then executed a cross to Xilit-Zaxac, who beat the defender who was marking them to score a brace on a header in the forty-fourth minute.

This seemed to completely crush the spirits of the host crowd; just before half, their team was finally showing a spark & had a chance to equalize, but instead a Qusma counterattack put their side down two goals to nil - & this was their first World Cup qualifier match in Pinewoods Stadium, on the heels of their side nearly pulling a point away from a trip to multiversal powerhouses Ceni.

“It really seemed to take the air out of them,” offered the manager when asked about it. “After that, the home crowd just did not seem to be in it. I think that second goal was really momentous for us, because that eased the pressure on us, both from the scoreline & from the Beepeean fans. At the time, though, I was worried that Beepee would come out for the second half more motivated than ever; that’s why I tried to make sure our players would match that fire when we went in for team talks at half.”

Match that fire they did, as Qusmo came out roaring. In the fifty-first minute, centre-back Cunix-Betva Tla made a standing tackle on oncoming Beepeean striker Carlo Bannan, then dribbled nearly to midfield before passing it to left midfielder Kynda-Sevet Pec, who used breakneck speed to crash the box. The Beepeean defense wasn’t quite ready for the attack to come so soon, & they scrambled to cover Kynda-Sevet. In the confusion, two defenders went to mark the Qusmi, which left space for a simple pass to Xilit-Zaxac Yol, who didn’t even take a touch before burying a shot into the back of the net in the fifty-fourth minute.

It was 3-0, & Xilit-Zaxac had scored every goal of the match. While they were celebrating the first hat trick in Qusma history, the manager signalled for substitutes to start warming up, & the crowd went completely silent. Everyone in attendance at Pinewoods Stadium had seemed to arrive at a single conclusion: The game, for all intents & purposes, was already over.

“Look, at that point, we’ve got a 3-0 lead,” explained Avarn-Oxolt. “Maybe we might have squeezed one more goal out of there, the way we were playing, had I left the squad in a little longer, but I wanted to make sure that our best players would be fresh for matches that really mattered. We have sixteen more matches to go, & this was just the first of nine trips to opposing stadia around the multiverse. We need all the rest we can get.”

With that, Avarn-Oxolt called for a triple substitution in the sixty-fifth minute. Left back Jralv-Yamaj Mal replaced their KF Atlant teammate & national team centreback Lucex-Ilinx Opu, fellow Atlant fullback Nirlo-Betva Uzo came on to play on the right side of the defense in relief of captain & centre midfielder Ilinx-Kepex Zev, & poacher Paliv-Xilit Max replaced Xilit-Zaxac Yol, the hero of the match.

“Xilit-Zaxac played magically today. Whatever they were called to do, wherever on the pitch they were at, whichever situation they were put in, they did precisely what they had to to give our squad the best shot of winning as they could. Everyone gave a fantastic effort, but Xilit-Zaxac’s, in particular, really was one to remember,” Avarn-Oxolt proclaimed. “Again, I didn’t substitute anyone off because they were playing poorly; on the contrary, they were all doing so well, & I want to make sure they continue to do that well down the road in our qualifying campaign, too.”

Before heading off, Ilinx-Kepex Zev handed the captain’s armband off to vice captain & centreback Cunix-Betva Tla, who was entrusted simply with preserving a 3-0 lead with twenty-five minutes plus stoppage time remaining. With the extra player in defense, Qusmo settled into a 4-4-2 diamond, a formation it had not used previously in the qualification campaign, for the rest of the match.

The last half hour did not produce a bevy of highlights, as most players on both sides realized that they likely were not going to change the outcome of a Qusma victory. The one memorable moment was found in the seventy-eighth minute, as Pavliv-Xilit Max, the substitute of the player with the hat trick, scored on a free kick from twenty-five yards out.

Francois Shep, the Beepeean goalkeeper, clearly thought the ball would be heading for the near post, & they cheated there; unfortunately for Beepee, however, this shifted their momentum such that they were unable to react in time to save the shot, which was actually curled toward the far post.

Pinewoods Stadium was already very quiet, & it didn’t grow any louder after that. As some of the 72 000 fans in attendance started to head for the parking lot, the teams played out the final ten minutes & then headed for the locker room, one side ecstatic & the other dejected.

“Look, we’ve had an absolutely phenomenal first two matches,” commented Avarn-Oxolt. “Now we’ve got to capitalize on this momentum & find a way to win against Gopnikea in Qanz. In order to make sure we don’t squander this result, we need to make sure that we take all three points from that match. Let’s hope we keep this wonderful ride going one more match day. Let’s take it one match day at a time.”

When reminded that they had set a goal of seven points in the first three matches, Avarn-Oxolt laughed. “Yeah, I guess I ought to practice what I preach. But as for the seven point goal, that’s out the window. That was with a draw in mind here in Beepee. The goal was always to win both of our first two home matches. That’s still our goal. If that means the goal is to sit on nine points after our first three matches, then I guess that’s our goal.”

Avarn-Oxolt was then asked to comment on the Group 11 standings, which saw Qusmo second behind Ceni, tied on points & goal differential but behind on goals scored, & which awarded Beepee sole possession of last place based on goals scored. “I’ll address Beepee first. The Bulldozers are a good team. We played better than them today, & they were unlucky enough to draw Ceni in their opening match - but Beepee held them scoreless into the eighty-eighth minute. They’ll be ascending the table in short order.”

“As for us, look, we’ve only played two matches; we have sixteen left to go. It’d be great if these standings mattered right now, but the fact is, they really don’t. All that counts is what the table reads after match day eighteen, not match day two. With that said, I’ll look forward to seeing you all back in Qanz for match day three - & hopefully we’ll be discussing another Qusma victory afterwards, too.”

The visitor’s locker room had been completely cleared out except for Rilan-Jerat Nev when they buried their face in a towel. Their team had just wallopped the reigning Baptism of Fire champions 4-0, but they still didn’t feel quite right. Ever since the first match day, when their getting called offside twice nearly cost their team two points - & certainly cost them the honour of being their national team’s first-ever goalscorer - they had been focussed on one thing, & one thing only: getting on the scoresheet in Norfolk Woodlands. They had failed in that mission.

They had failed in a particularly humiliating way, too. With Qusmo already ahead 1-0 & the momentum clearly on their side in the thirty-second minute, they had started their run too early. They buried the ball in the back of the net, & they felt release from all the demons that plagued them since that match in Qanz. As they started to sprint over to the corner flag for a triumphant celebration, they spotted something else fluttering in the breeze: the linesperson raised their flag to call Rilan-Jerat offside. Again.

As far as they knew, there wasn’t a single radio in the entire radio, but they could still hear what they knew would be coming from Morning Sport the next day. They’d be torn apart for that performance. Their partner in the attack scored - the first hat trick in the national team’s history, in fact, & all within the first hour of play. Even their substitute was able to score in the half hour they were on the pitch. In ninety minutes of play, Rilan-Jerat got nothing.

Rilan-Jerat knew their worth. They had proven it in Pug Qusmyra. They had established themselves as the best & star player on a team that qualified for the UICA Globe Cup. There was a reason they were picked for the national team training camp, then for the final roster, & finally to be a part of their national team’s starting XI in both its qualifying matches to date. Rilan-Jerat could do it. Rilan-Jerat could score. The only question was: Why didn’t they, then?

Rilan-Jerat inched towards the showers with the towel still draped over their head.

“Welcome to Morning Sport. Today, we get to talk about another victory. In this one, the Qusma team surprised all of us & actually played half-decently for once. Let’s remember, however, before we get too excited about the results or the table, that we’ve only played two matches - & both against nations that haven’t even attempted to qualify for a World Cup before.”

“Qusmo will have to keep winning in Qanz against Gopnikea in match day three. Gopnikea is another team which has never entered World Cup qualification before; in fact, they didn’t play a single match before this qualification campaign, & they still haven’t won a single match. Scratch that - they still haven’t taken a single point from any of their matches. They’re unranked, & they’re coming off a four-goal loss at home. Of all the eighteen qualifying matches, this should be the easiest for Qusmo. They’re playing Gopnikea, & they’re playing Gopnikea at home. Anything less than a resounding victory will be an utter disgrace to the country.”

“So even if Qusmo come out of match day three with nine points, remember that there’s still fifteen match days left to go, & they won’t have played a single team with previous World Cup qualifier experience, much less previous World Cup proper, experience at that point. Match day four is when we’ll see the real Qusmo come out, & I’ll stand by what I’ve been saying all along: that match will not be pretty. Even so, there’s no guarantee that we’ll be riding nine points into Tumbra. Don’t get me wrong - there should be a guarantee. For any halfway decent team, there would be a guarantee. But Qusmo still isn’t playing well enough to have any true success.”

“Forzu-Ralox Kal makes one cross & they’re hailed as a master. Well, guess what? They’ve still botched more crosses than they’ve made on the international stage. They’re still a liability. They’re still a bad player. A centre back makes a single clearance & suddenly people proclaim that they’re multiversal class. Well, guess what? They’re not. Despite what the scoreline says, we still haven’t played at a high level. If Gopnikea comes out playing good football, I could certainly see them holding us to a single point - or maybe even none at all.”

“The fact is, Avarn-Oxolt Ban’s crew can’t get comfortable near the top of the table. They’re going to come down soon. & they can’t overlook Gopnikea, or they might come down really soon. They can’t let their emotions control them, or let themselves glide on happy thoughts on the non-failures of the past two matches. You need look no further than Rilan-Jerat Nev for that. The kid’s not fit for international football. They got called back for offside three times in two matches, for crying out loud! They don’t have discipline, & they don’t have the ability to steel down & win a match for Qusmo. Avarn-Oxolt needs to take them out immediately. But, then again, that’s just a fraction of the changes Qusmo needs to make to be competitive at all - & that starts with replacing Avarn-Oxolt themself. If they don’t beat Gopnikea by a multigoal margin, Fuzpon Qusma will need to fire Avarn-Oxolt immediately. & I doubt that Qusmo will get that kind of win in Qanz.”

Qusmo National Team loses for first time

Qusma football fans are disappointed in their national team's latest showing, a 2-0 loss to unranked Gopnikea at home.

Qusmo had high hopes for the match, as they had won their first two matches of the qualification cycle, compared to the two losses Gopnikea had suffered; in addition, while Qusmo were coming off a 4-0 away win, Gopnikea was still reeling from a 6-2 away loss. Given that the team was unranked & the match would be at home, this was pegged before the qualification campaign by many analysts as the best bet for Qusmo to pick up points. Unfortunately, those predictions did not come to fruition.

Qusmo started off fairly strong, again creating several chances in the early stages of the match. However, a combination of a surprisingly firm Gopnikean defense & some poor crosses nullified any threat the Qusmi'y posed early on. Instead, it was just after the half-hour mark that the match truly broke open. Gopnikea's star centre forward moved up the pitch, & centrebacks Yelto-Alfan Ono & Lucex-Ilinx Opu seemed confused as to who was supposed to mark them. They ended up slicing straight through the middle of the pitch, & looked to be on goal. Both Yelto-Alfan & Lucex-Ilinx were sprinting on the striker's tail, trying to catch up, but it looked like a clean chance on goal for Gopnikea.

Then, at the edge of the box, Lucex-Ilinx did what would change the very nature of the match: they went in for a sliding tackle from behind.

Lucex-Ilinx got the ball in the challenge, but they also got a lot of the striker in the process. There was nothing the Gopnikean could do to avoid taking a heavy fall. The entire stadium held its breath as the referee immediately whistled play dead & rushed to the spot of the foul, just at the edge of the box. Standing face to face with Lucex-Ilinx, they first pointed to the penalty spot & then reached into their back pocket. Lucex-Ilinx had already started to walk off by the time the official had found their red card & brandished it high for the world to see in the thirty-fourth minute.

Qusma manager Avarn-Oxolt Ban was livid on the sideline - just as their Gopnikean counterpart was. "Lucex-Ilinx Opu lost their composure, & there's absolutely no excuse for that. They bludgeoned that poor striker in the box. I'm not surprised that was a red card at all." Not a single one of the 80 000 fans in Mastad Qusma seemed to be sitting in their seats as they all looked desperately at the spot, where the same Gopnikean striker who was just taken down now prepared for a penalty kick. Qusma goalkeeper Xynat-Evela Cuf dove to the left. The ball was calmly slotted home to the right in the thirty-sixth minute.

With that, Qusmo was in deep trouble. "We were down 1-0 after the penalty & had only ten players on the pitch, & we were really in a hole from that point on," admitted Avarn-Oxolt. "We were in a completely unfamiliar situation. We had never conceded before, so we had never had to play from behind. And we certainly had never played with ten players before. It's one thing to try to play from behind, & quite another to do so down a player."

Qusmo visibly struggled for the rest of the match, as the pressure of the situation seemed to rattle them. "It's no secret that we were expected to pick up three points from this match. And that was new to us, too. We hadn't ever been favourites before. Now, we're down a goal & down a player, & we're trying to satisfy our home crowd & our expectations for ourselves. We weren't able to handle the situation well, &, in part, that's my fault. I need to do a better job of getting all our players back in shape."

From that point on, rather than make a substitution so early, Avarn-Oxolt opted to transition defensively-minded centre midfielder Yunal-Julad Waz to play as a centreback, turning what used to be a 3-5-2 into an improvised 3-4-2. Unfortunately, the formation did not hold up, as Gopnikea was able to execute an attack that in many ways was almost a carbon copy of its first goal; if two centrebacks who had not conceded a goal in 154 minutes of international play could miscommunicate, so could a centreback & a centre midfielder pretending to be a centreback for seven minutes, as Yunal-Julad & Cunix-Betva Tla each thought the other was marking the same Gopnikean striker, allowing a long ball to reach them & giving them a lot of space to work with. In the fourty-third minute, they had the goalkeeper one-on-one, & they fired a shot into the top left corner just before Xynat-Evela was able to run forward to try to cut off the striker's angle.

"At 2-0, the match is going very poorly, especially given that we had only ten players on the pitch," noted Avarn-Oxolt. "It was always going to be a struggle to make up that deficit, & we just weren't able to do it today." Indeed, Qusmo never really seriously threatened Gopnikea from that point on. Avarn-Oxolt called for a double substitution at the half, replacing left midfielder Kynda-Sevet Pec & right midfielder Forzu-Ralox Kal with fullbacks Karar-Nirlo Hus & Nirlo-Betva Uzo, who played on the left & right sides of the pitch, respectively. That allowed Yunal-Julad to go back to midfield, & created a 4-3-2 formation.

Unfortunately for the Qusmi'y, it didn't work. All the players on the pitch seemed to be trying to do too much, & it ended up doing nothing. Several attacks that were shaping up to be decent were cut short early by overambitious & ill-advised passed & crosses. Avarn-Oxolt eventually waved for left wing forward Ozolx-Mazur Guv to come in for the poorly-performing centreback Yelto-Alfan in the seventy-first minute, with striker Rilan-Jerat Nev moving to the right wing to create a 3-3-3; however, it was largely a move of desperation, & it didn't produce any goals.

Looking ahead to Qusmo's next match, Avarn-Oxolt remained dour. "We're about to visit Tumbra. They've been through the qualifying campaign before. In fact, they've even qualified before. It's going to be by far our toughest test yet. And, based on our performance in this match, I think we'll have to make some changes for it."

With that, Avarn-Oxolt went back to work, & the media they addressed was left to wonder exactly what changes they might be hinting at.

Qusmo National Team takes a tumble in Tumbra

Qusmo lost for the second consecutive matchday of World Cup qualification in Tumbra.

The match was expected to be a true test for the Qusma team; they had faced previously taken six points from three teams that had never before entered World Cup qualification, but a team of the quality of Tumbra was new to them. Tumbra is ranked 24th in the world & qualified for World Cup 79. They proved why they earned their reputation - &, conversely, why Qusmo wasn’t yet quite up to par.

The two teams’ forms heading into the match was much-bantered about, as they seemed to have opposite trajectories heading into the match in Goldlion City. Tumbra had started the qualifying campaign in a rut, with two disastrous defensive performances leading to nine concessions & two losses by multi-goal margins; however, they were just off the heels of an impressive 1-0 away win against 17th-ranked world powers Ceni. On the other hand, Qusmo had started the campaign brilliantly, winning both its first two matches by a combined margin of five goals, but they had just been outclassed by unranked Gopnikea 2-0 at home. The questions facing both teams was whether Tumbra could keep up the good form, & whether Qusmo would keep up the poor form.

The response was emphatic: From both teams, yes.

Frustrated with their team’s performance at Mastad Qanza against Gopnikea, manager Avarn-Oxolt Ban opted to change their starting XI for the first time in the qualification cycle. In fact, there were fairly radical changes. It began when centreback enforcer Lucex-Ilinx Opu, who was sent off & yielded a penalty to snap Qusmo’s 216-minute clean sheet streak to start international competition against Gopnikea, was left in Qusmo in a shock decision. In their place on the twenty-five-player roster was KF Werzin centreback Ozolx-Alfan Ixi.

Even more astounding to observers of the Qusma team was Avarn-Oxolt’s comments on Lucex-Ilinx after the decision to leave them behind was announced. “Lucex-Ilinx’s play was selfish. It was reckless. It was irresponsible. & it cost us a match we needed to win. After the match in Qanz, I don’t see a place for them on my team.” Reporters immediately questioned Avarn-Oxolt about whether they would consider bringing back the player who many observers believe to be the national team’s best defender. “It’s simple: If they play for the Qusma national team, they’re playing for Qusmo. They need to understand that. & they need to act like it.” Avarn-Oxolt opened the door to a return for Lucex-Ilinx later in the campaign, but “only after the midway break - &, even then, we’ll see.”

Once the Qusma players took the pitch in Goldlion City, meanwhile, there were changes in the lineup. Goalkeeper Xynat-Evela Cuf was left in the squad, as were centrebacks Yelto-Alfan Ono & Cunix-Betva Tla. However, they were also joined by two fullbacks: Karar-Nirlo Hus, who earned their first cap as a second-half substitute in the Gopnikea match, & Zorno-Relaf Bel, who had never before appeared in a national team match, took their places in the left & right sides of the defense, respectively. Zorno-Relaf was a bit of a surprise, as Avarn-Oxolt had passed on them in favour of Lucex-Ilinx’s KF Atlant teammate Nirlo-Betva Uzo as a second-half substitute against Gopnikea. However, Avarn-Oxolt was unsatisfied with Nirlo-Betva’s performance against Gopnikea, prompting the change. “Let’s be honest here,” Avarn-Oxolt entreatied the press. “I wasn’t very happy with most of our players’ play against Gopnikea. Uzo was no exception.”

The changes did not end there. Kynda-Sevet Pec & Forzu-Ralox Kal, left & right midfielders, respectively, were taken out of the lineup entirely, though centre midfielders Yunal-Julad Waz, Ilinx-Kepex Zev, & Ilinx-Vulav Ixi remained. That left room for three in the attack. Striker Rilan-Jerat Nev was taken out of the lineup, while matchday one starter Xilit-Zaxac Yol was left in at centre forward. They were joined by Ozolx-Mazur Guv, who had already received two caps as a substitute, & Jralv-Nexev Pec, who had already received one cap, as left & right forwards, respectively. That left a 4-3-3 formation with four new starters, a sharp turn from the previous three matches, in which Avarn-Oxolt presided over a 3-5-2 with the same Starting XI for each match.

Unfortunately, the new team did not seem to come together particularly well. There was a lack of cohesion & chemistry among the team, & many seemed to be unaccustomed to playing in the new formation. That created a lot of terrible timings, poor passes, & dead-end dribbles - & Tumbra’s first goal. With Qusmo being cold from the outset, Tumbran striker John Krajewski intercepted a Zorno-Relaf Bel pass from the defense intended for Yunal-Julad Waz, & they raced through the defense before it could regroup to fire a rocket past Xynat-Evela Cuf to give the Blue Lions the lead in the seventeenth minute.

Tumbra consistently had the advantage throughout the match, with more possession, more possession in the final third, more chances, more shots, more shots on goal, & - critically - more goals. Tumbra kept up the pressure on the Qusma defense, but it was able to clear some crosses & make critical tackles. They prevented Tumbra from getting another good look on goal like the opportunity Krajewski had earlier, & Xynat-Evela was able to make some good saves to keep the match, technically, within reach.

Unfortunately for Qusmo, however, a tackle of Tumbran midfielder Henry Butler on the edge of the box brought a foul - & a free kick. Two players stood behind the ball, but the whole stadium knew who was about to take the kick. Indeed, Krajewski was the one to launch it. The direct free kick went for the near post, & a poor wall, coupled with a rare Xynat-Evela lapse, allowed it to reach its target in the back of the net. Krajewski celebrated their brace in the thirty-ninth minute, & it seemed to many that the question was how bad the drubbing would be.

Fortunately for the Qusmi’y, however, Tumbran manager Robin Stoff decided to conserve some of their best players for the matches ahead, making three substitutions in the first fifteen minutes of the second half, including retiring Krajewski in the fifty-first. Stoff’s assessment was simply an acknowledgement of what all in Goldlion City knew: Tumbra would win, handily, & they would need their best players well-rested for other matches.

Qusmo never really challenged this assumption, as they were unable to mount a string of passes that could pose an effective attack to threaten the hosts. Their one best chance came in the sixty-sixth minute, when a Ilinx-Vulav Ixi corner found the head of Xilit-Zaxac Yol, but Xilit-Zaxac sailed it over the bar.

Qusmo left Goldlion City with a troubling realization: after a perfect six points from their first two matches, they had suffered two consecutive defeats by identical 2-0 margins. “It’s not the best, I’ll admit,” responded Avarn-Oxolt after the match. “But we’re still riding six points after only four matches. We’re still fourth in the group. We’re still ahead of Tumbra in the table, even. We had a great opening two matchdays, & that’ll help us adapt to these latest two results.”

“And, once you get down to it, it seems like a decent result to me. We visited the 24th-ranked team in the world, & we turned in a respectable performance. No one was expecting us to beat the Blue Lions, & I don’t think many people fancied our chances of taking a point. We only conceded two goals, not twelve. We ought to make sure we consider that, too,” Avarn-Oxolt reminded.

Over the course of the match, Avarn-Oxolt brought on several new players who had not earned a national team cap before. In the seventieth minute, Rilan-Belaj Tar replaced Ozolx-Mazur Guv at left wing forward & Jralv-Yamaj Mal came in for Karar-Nirlo Hus at left defense; both of the players who came off were in the midst of their first national team starts. Yamaj-Blonz Jok then swapped positions with matchday one starter Ilinx-Vulav Ixi, who had previously played every minute of the qualifying campaign, at centre midfield.

“Ultimately, what we’re talking about here is not just a single match. It’s eighteen,” emphasized Avarn-Oxolt. “And we need to make sure that we have enough fuel left in the tank to have good performances down the road. Eighteen matches adds up to 1620 minutes, & that’s awfully straining on a player’s body, especially factoring in nine road trips around the multiverse. If we’re going to compete against Kandorith & the other teams in Group 11, we need to be well-rested for it.”

The manager then looked forward to the match ahead. “Kandorith is going to be a tough opponent, but they’re the lowest-ranked opponent we have left for a home fixture. They’re at the bottom of the group now, & we’ll hope to keep them there. I think we have a shot. We’ll see what happens in Tracam.”

Qusmo National Team edged out by Kandorith

Qusmo suffered yet another loss in World Cup qualifying, falling 1-0 to Kandorith in Tracam.

After two early victories in the qualification campaign that vaulted the Qusmi’y to second in Group 11, they are in the midst of a three match losing streak, sitting sixth of ten with six points after five matches. Qusmo may be sitting near mid-table, but they are closer to the bottom - Beepee, the team Qusmo last beat, which has four points - than they are to fourth place - Gopnikea, the team they first lost to, which has nine points.

After the match, manager Avarn-Oxolt Ban commented on their team’s recent dip in form after the match. “Look, it’s not a matter of our campaign running off the rails. We’re really done rather well. No one expected us to win 4-0 in Beepee, for example. A drop in performance was predictable, though. We started off against some of the weaker teams in the group; now we’re entering the toughest part of our schedule. I’m not disappointed that we haven’t pulled off another massive upset. We’ve hung in there, competed fiercely, & kept things close. That’s all I can expect out of our team at this point.”

Indeed, this was Qusmo’s best display of football in a loss to date. From the moment of the first whistle, Qusmo got on the attack & applied constant pressure to the Red Dragons throughout the match. The home crowd at Mastad Tracama was lively throughout & lifted their team to an inspired performance. It just wasn’t quite enough this time.

The lineup, which reverted to Avarn-Oxolt’s original matchday one 3-5-2 lineup with the exceptions of Paliv-Xilit Max as a second striker in place of Rilan-Jerat Nev & Zenon-Geral Kal instead of the still-exiled Lucex-Ilinx Opu at centreback, had particular success in passing the football. It opened up the pitch throughout & created all kinds of chances; the new duo in attack, however, were not able to convert. Paliv-Xilit Max, in particular, who had scored as a substitute against Beepee but had not yet started a match for the national team, struggled to put shots on target.

“Look, some days you perform well, & some days you don’t. It just depends on the day & on how you feel. I’m confident that Paliv-Xilit Max will get back in form soon,” Avarn-Oxolt told the media. “Both Paliv-Xilit & Rilan-Jerat have performed well at times & poorly at times. We’ll probably keep rotating those two to see who does well on a given day; hopefully, one will step up & cement their place.” Notably, Rilan-Jerat did come on for Paliv-Xilit in the eightieth minute, & had a fantastic chance just three minutes later, but Kandorese goalkeeper Jianjun Tuan made an excellent save.

Instead, the team to break open the scoring was Kandorith. Shan Xiaobo, captain of the Red Dragons, did just what Shan Xiaobo does & raced across the pitch mere metres from the touchline before cutting inside & sending a rocket past Xynat-Evela Cuf & into the back of the net in the eighty-eighth minute.

“It’s disappointing that we weren’t able to get three points, given how close Rilan-Jerat was today, & it’s disappointing that we weren’t able to pick up one, given how long our defense hung strong. Still, it’s an encouraging sign that we’re doing better than we did in our last two matches, & that we can hang with good squads. I’m hopeful for our match against Yesopalitha. The Sacred Heart is an intimidating venue, & the team will be no pushovers, but I think we have what it takes to mount a decent challenge. Hopefully we’re able to do just that.”

Qusmo National Team breaks goal drought but not losing streak

In Yesopalitha, Qusmo lost for the fourth straight match of its World Cup qualifying campaign.

“Our players did really well today,” manager Avarn-Oxolt Ban told the press after the match. “It simply wasn’t quite enough to create a result today. I am pleased, however, that we were able to challenge late after going down 2-0, & regain our goalscoring footing. I hope that will serve us well in the future.”

Qusmo came out very shaky, conceding two early goals. First, Yesopalitha scored in the ninth minute on a cross into the box from left midfielder Jenniven Yersau to striker Zoé Roswell, who was left unmarked in the box. The Yesopalithan promptly tucked the ball away into the corner of the net.

Yesopalitha then struck again before Qusmo could regroup; star striker & captain Nadya Dostoevich won a free kick thirty-five yards out, & right midfielder Monika Jack-Bentley found the head of Roswell, who registered a brace in the fifteenth minute. With the score already 2-0, things looked doomed for Qusmo.

“I think a lot of our early struggles had to do with the environment,” analyzed Avarn-Oxolt. “If you look around, it’s really an amazing stadium. The Sacred Heart has 144 000 fans inside it; remember, none of these players have ever competed in a stadium with a capacity of more than 80 000 before, & that’s our own national stadium. As for hostile stadia, the most we’ve ever visited is Woodlands, with a capacity of 72 000 - precisely one-half that of the Sacred Heart. We were rattled early, & the pressure showed. That said, after the first fifteen minutes, we were able to hold our own. If we hadn’t had that initial shock, perhaps we would have pulled out a result - maybe even a win.”

Indeed, Qusmo seemed a changed team after Roswell scored their second goal. The eleven Qusmi’y on the pitch - the same as the Starting XI from the previous match against Kandorith - performed as well as how they did in the previous matchday. Unfortunately for Qusmo, however, it garnered the same final result.

Qusmo fought valiantly against the Flames all match, but, again, they could not convert the chances they were winning. In the forty-third minute, they looked to have halved their deficit just before the half, but second striker Paliv-Xilit Max was ruled offside. Then, in the sixtieth minute, a through ball nearly found striker Xilit-Zaxac Yol streaking through the box, but it was a touch heavy, allowing Yesopalithan goalkeeper Henrietta Calhoun to collect it before Xilit-Zaxac could catch up.

Ultimately, though, the most excitement for Qusma fans came in the last ten minutes of the match, as Paliv-Xilit Max wrong-footed a fantastic chance well wide in the eighty-third minute, not even troubling the keeper despite the fact that they had broken through the Yesopalithan defensive line. Avarn-Oxolt seemed resigned to a loss then, & signalled for a triple substitution. Cunix-Betva Tla, the only outfield player to have played all 533 minutes of the qualifying campaign to that point, came off for fellow centreback Ozolx-Alfan Ixi, earning their first minutes after not initially making the original twenty-five-player roster. Ilinx-Ibilx Tla replaced Forzu-Ralox Kal, meaning all outfield players on the roster would see some action during the first six matches of qualification. Finally, & most importantly for the match, Rilan-Jerat Nev replaced Xilit-Zaxac Yol at striker.

On the ensuing goal kick, Qusmo gained possession, & the ball soon found recently substituted Rilan-Jerat. With a pair of fresh legs, Rilan-Jerat was able to speed by the opposition & outmanoeuvre Calhoun in the eighty-fourth minute to net Qusmo’s first goal since their 4-0 wonder in Beepee.

In lieu of a celebration for their first-ever international goal, Rilan-Jerat immediately ran to the ball & collected it before sprinting back to the centre of the pitch so that play could resume quickly. Rilan-Jerat clearly had one goal on their mind: there was still time left to equalize.

Rilan-Jerat was not off the mark, either, as Qusmo secured a corner in stoppage time after a frantic last few minutes. In the second minute of stoppage time, captain Ilinx-Vulav Ixi launched the ball into the box, but it was cleared by Yesopalithan centreback Patricia Vickers. As the ball bounced away, the referee blew their whistle, & time for a miraculous Qusma rally expired.

“Fantastic match, really. I’m really happy with how we fought. It was tough swallowing that final result, given how we played, but it’s really encouraging to me for our future. Had we gotten one or two bounces to go our way, we might’ve equalized - or maybe even picked up three points,” Avarn-Oxolt glowed.

The manager also defending their decision to make a triple substitution so late in the match; with so many unexperienced players subbed on, many onlookers thought it amounted to a virtual concession. Some wondered if Qusmo might have equalized had they not done it, or had they called for different players. “Look, it worked, didn’t it? We got experience for two players who didn’t have it, we rested a player who had given nearly six full matches by that point, & we were able to get a goal from it immediately after the change happened. I think it was a good move.”

That said, Avarn-Oxolt will have some questions to answer entering the home fixture against Buyan. The Blue Hedgehogs will be a very tough opponent, & Qusmo is in the midst of a four-match slide. Whether they will be able to pull it off is anyone’s guess.

Qusmo National Team earns point in thriller against Buyan

Qusmo was able to snap a four-match losing streak against Buyan, but a poor defensive effort gave the Qusmi’y only a draw against the Blue Hedgehogs.

Qusma manager Avarn-Oxolt Ban opted to remain with the same Starting XI they had used in their previous match, with the exception that Rilan-Jerat Nev would replace Paliv-Xilit Max at centre forward on the heels of Rilan-Jerat’s first international goal. That move paid dividends for Qusmo.

“Ultimately, we have to look at what the best group of eleven players is for our team. That will change from match to match based on who we’re playing & who’s in form. I thought that Rilan-Jerat had performed well lately, & I thought it was fit to have them return to the Starting XI. I think we all saw that they, indeed, are performing well.”

In fact, Rilan-Jerat was the one to open the scoring. About midway through the first half, left midfielder Kynda-Sevet Pec played the ball forward to striker Xilit-Zaxac Yol, who drew the attention of two Buyanese centrebacks. Their rush forward left space for Rilan-Jerat Nev, who had to deal with only centreback Svante Bjorklund. They were just a step off Bjorklund, but it was all Rilan-Jerat needed, as they netted with their second touch in the twenty-eighth minute.

The scoreboard operator was far from finished; both sides helped themselves to goals aplenty. The match with Buyan represents the highest-scoring match Qusmo has ever been a part of, as well as their second-best offensive effort & their single-worst defensive showing. That said, with the exception of Rilan-Jerat’s goal, it was largely silent for the first half. Both sides had chances, but the defenses were able to keep the scores low.

That changed immediately after the break. Buyan came out charging, with Mats Hedlund commanding the Buyanese attack from their position in centre midfield. They got to their attacking third on the strength of strong dribbling, but they played it forward to centre forward Jon Fossum. Fossum was harassed by their marker, centreback Yelto-Alfan Ono, & there were no good passing options available. Finally, after some time of trying to create space to no avail, they tried a shot in desperation. To the surprise of many in the stadium, it found the back of the net.

Qusma goalkeeper Xynat-Evela Cuf had largely played admirably for the campaign to that point, which allowed them to win the starting job & maintain a vice grip on it. They are the only player on the Qusma team to have played all 630 minutes of qualifying so far - & the other two goalkeepers on the squad are the only two to have not logged any minutes yet. Thus, the first Buyanese goal came as a bit of a shock - as did the second.

Still reeling from Buyan’s equalizer, Yunal-Julad Waz made a poor pass, which was intercepted by Mats Hedlund. Again, Hedlund organized the attack from midfield, & they quickly found striker Ekhard Gustloff in an advanced position. Fossum & Gustloff got most of the attention from the centreback trio, but this allowed attacking midfielder Valter Isaksson to find space once the Blue Hedgehog attack had raced forward to add more bodies in the attack. Isaksson received a pass that established them in the box, but at an awful angle. Xynat-Evela raced forward & tried to dive for it, but Isaksson got their shot off just as Xynat-Evela got there. It was a bit of a garbled shot, but the force of the shot sent it squirting out of the goalkeeper’s arms, & it bounced into the net in the fifty-first minute before any Qusmi could clear it.

Down 2-1, with two goals conceded in the span of three minutes, the home crowd was hushed, & the players looked dispirited. Still, though, they were able to regroup. In the sixtieth minute, Qusmo found an equalizer after a long tiki-taka-style passing sequence found striker Xilit-Zaxac Yol streaking through a crease in the defense onto goal. They calmly & cleanly put it through the legs of onrushing goalkeeper Pawlo Marciak to notch Qusmo’s second goal.

The Blue Hedgehogs were far from done yet, however. It was once again Mats Hedlund who spearheaded the Buyanese attack for a third goal. This time, however, they combined with Fossum to confuse the Qusma defense, allowing Hedlund to finally gain credit for a goal for themself in the seventy-eighth minute. Rapidly approaching the end of the match & down a goal again, the hosts looked headed for defeat.

Avarn-Oxolt Ban quickly made changes to bolster their side, however. First, they substituted left & right midfielders Kynda-Sevet Pec & Forzu-Ralox Kal out of the match & inserted fullbacks Karar-Nirlo Hus & Nirlo-Betva Uzo at left & right defense, respectively. That left five in the Qusma defense, but Avarn-Oxolt then yanked centreback Zenon-Gerol Kal & put second striker Paliv-Xilit in the match instead. The seventy-eighth minute triple substitution left Qusmo with a narrow 4-3-3 formation, & it worked.

With fresh legs, left back Narar-Nirlo Hus was able to race down the side of the pitch, supporting a late attack. They were able to pass it to Paliv-Xilit, who then found Rilan-Jerat Nev unmarked in the midst of the mess of Qusma players swarming the Blue Hedgehogs’ final third. Rilan-Jerat fired a shot into the top left corner, beating Marciak, & they beckoned their teammates back into position quickly. They may have just scored a brace - & their third international goal in two matches - but they wanted three points.

Unfortunately for Qusmo, it was nearly Buyan who collected them. Fortunately, they weren’t quite able to. One last Qusma attack fizzled out after Marciak saved a Paliv-Xilit shot. Many Qusma players were concentrated in the final third, so Marciak’s goal kick was taken quickly, allowing the Blue Hedgehogs to rush forward quickly before Qusmo could regroup. In stoppage time, Fossum nearly won the match for Buyan, but Xynat-Evela executed a diving save. Isaksson took a corner kick in the second minute of stoppage time that could have won it, but Xynat-Evela ended the action by punching the ball away before anyone else could get to it.

“Honestly, it was such an exciting game. Absolutely amazing to watch from a neutral fan’s perspective - from the position of a national team manager, though, I’m just glad I have a healthy heart,” Avarn-Oxolt joked after the match. “We picked up a point against a top-50 side in the world. That’s really a remarkable achievement, & I’m proud of our players for creating it. It’ll be awfully difficult to replicate that success against Ceni, world number 17, & away from these friendly confines, but we’re going to go out, fight, & do the best we can.”

Avarn-Oxolt was also asked to comment on Qusmo’s defensive woes. “Honestly, we had a bad match from the back. We’ll have that sometimes. I’m confident that our defense, & especially Xynat-Evela, will get better soon, though. We have a great team, a great squad, & they’ve been playing up to those standards so far. I know we’ll be able to do it throughout the rest of this campaign.”

Qusmo National Team takes drubbing in Ceni

The matchday after Qusmo set records for their highest-scoring match & their worst defensive showing, they broke both in a 5-2 loss in Ceni that was an even more lopsided affair than the score suggests.

Manager Avarn-Oxolt Ban decided to employ a 5-3-2 formation to begin the match; they used the same formation as they had the previous matchday, except with left & right midfielders Kynda-Sevet Pec & Forzu-Ralox Kal taken off, & fullbacks Karar-Nirlo Hus & Nirlo-Betva Uzo taking their places in left & right defense, respectively.

“Ceni is a powerful team, & they are capable of scoring in bunches. We knew that before we came here today. That’s exactly what we were hoping to avoid,” Avarn-Oxolt explained. “That’s why we started the match with a 5-3-2. Ultimately, that wasn’t enough, however. Given how much our defense has been struggling lately, I’ll have to take a hard look at some possible changes to fix it.”

It may have been the simple fact that Ceni is top-class opposition, but they completely exposed the Qusma defense. Avarn-Oxolt has liked to play defensively & keep scorelines low, but you would have never known it from the past two matches, & especially from the one in Cenial. It started in the ninth minute, when star Cenian striker Andrew Arrowsword fought off two Qusma centrebacks to get a single step of space to fire a missile directly into the top left corner of the net before goalkeeper Xynat-Evela Cuf could even react, much less execute a diving save.

The initial excitement of the match’s start had not yet subsided, & the hosts had already achieved a 1-0 lead. Cenial Halycon National Stadium was roaring, & both squads seemed affected by the pervasive noise & electric energy going through the stadium. One was emboldened; the other was taken aback. They would soon fall farther back on the scoreboard, however.

Young midfielder Zane Kirchner, who had earned a spot in the Starting XI against Qusmo largely to gain experience in a match Cenian manager Luke Longstar did not expect to need their full strength squad for, dribbled dribbled forward & attracted the attention of two Qusma centrebacks. That gave more than enough room for Arrowsword to receive a pass at the edge of the box. All they needed to beat was Cunix-Betva Tla & the goalkeeper, & they did just that in the fourteenth minute.

From there, the match looked over for Qusmo - if it had not already before. They were down by two goals visiting the number 17th team in the world, & the home stadium was even louder than it was before. At this point, some Qusma players had visible difficulty communicating with each other on the pitch, which may have contributed to their next concession.

It required no skill or trickery on Ceni’s part to notch their third goal. Shortly after Kirchner fed Arrowsword, Arrowsword repaid Kirchner’s favour simply by finding the young midfielder completely unmarked in the box. Any international-level player should have scored from that spot, & despite their age, Kirchner is a Cenian international player, & they converted easily to put their side ahead 3-0.

“Of course, in some other sports, there are timeouts that the manager can use to stop play,” explained Avarn-Oxolt. “There were a lot of points throughout that first half when I wished we had timeouts in football. It was an absolutely brutal half; we were reeling throughout the entire period, & Ceni did not let us recover for a single second.”

Indeed, Ceni kept on attacking; Qusmo’s nightmare half would get even worse. Even with a three-goal margin, it was clear that Arrowsword hungered for a hat trick to put a truly unforgettable mark on the match. They got exactly that after barely half an hour of match time. Fullback Evan Turich-Albertson lumbered down the left side of the pitch, bringing an extra body to the Cenian attack that Qusmo clearly was incapable of handling. Before the Qusmi’y could figure out what was going on & how to stop it, Turich-Albertson crossed it into the box, where they found, of course, Arrowsword, who needed only one touch to put their team ahead by four goals in the thirty-fourth minute.

Every spectator in Cenial Halycon National Stadium could see that Qusmo was monumentally relieved to get off the pitch at the sound of the halftime whistle; they were fighting off yet another attack from Ceni, & the referee had perhaps been a bit generous with what they considered a clearance to merited the stoppage of play. Qusmo desperately needed the benefit of the half, & they were able to get it.

The Qusma attack held largely intact after the half, as Qusmo was able to repulse most Cenian chances before they became truly dangerous. After a first half goal frenzy, the crowd was lulled by the half - & the four-goal margin on the scoreboard - which also seemed to help Qusmo. Indeed, in the sixtieth minute, defensive midfielder Yunal-Julad Waz was able to play forward a through ball to attacking midfielder & domestic club teammate Ilinx-Vulav Ixi, who benefitted from centreback Ariana Guri-Montague tripping on a patch of grass. Ilinx-Vulav then beat 18-year-old goalkeeper Leo Glasvyrn, who was also starting simply for experience, one-on-one.

At that point, down three with only half an hour left, Avarn-Oxolt decided to make their substitutions for the day. They removed two centrebacks, Yelto-Alfan Ono & Cunix-Betva Tla, & put centreback Ozolx-Alfan Ixi & left wing forward Ozolx-Mazur Guv in the match in their steads. In addition, Avarn-Oxolt decided to take out centre forward Xilit-Zaxac Yol & replaced them with left wing forward Rilan-Belaj Tar, who instead played the match in a somewhat unnatural right wing position.

“Down 4-1 against Ceni, there’s no coming back from that for us. Then you factor in the fact that we only have half an hour left. Then you factor in the fact that we’re in Cenial. No chance. I hate to give up early, but we had absolutely no chance,” Avarn-Oxolt confessed. “Everyone who was watching that match knew it. Our players still played, & they still fought, & they still gave it their all. But that was a bit of a freer opportunity to rest players & try out some experimental tactics.”

Indeed, Qusmo still put up a fight against the two-time World Cup quarterfinalists in a new 4-3-3 of sorts; however, it was too little, too late. Substitute Ozolx-Mazur Guv was able to notch their first international goal on a free kick in the seventy-seventh minute, but it was against a Cenian squad that no longer had much spunk in it after they had roared to a 4-0 lead; many of Ceni’s starters were simply conserving energy, whether on the field or on the bench, at that point.

However, one Cenian had not been taken off the pitch, & they hated to see the minnows from Qusmo halve the deficit in Cenial. In the end, Andrew Arrowsword kept playing until the final whistle, & in the eighty-sixth minute, they were able to get around the Qusma centreback pairing, which featured one player who was a reserve & another who was not even on the twenty-five-player roster at the beginning of the qualification campaign. Arrowsword finished with ease.

The score remained 5-2 for the rest of the match, & Andrew Arrowsword got to claim a four-goal match. On the other side of the pitch, both of Qusmo’s goalscorers had started the day without ever scoring for their country on the international stage & ended with exactly one on their tally. That really was emblematic of the day at large.

The six-time World Cup participants simply proved too much for unranked Qusmo. Even the stadium, which had hosted a Baptism of Fire & a World Cup, seemed to overwhelm the visitors. Everything down to their own kits - which, in a bit of trivia, were white for the first time in Qusmo’s international history, as Qusmo’s red & gold first choice kits clashed with Ceni’s red & gold first choice kits - seemed to place Qusmo out of sorts.

“Look, the big takeaway we need to have from this is that we played poorly against a fantastic opponent. I don’t want to take anything away from Ceni, & especially Arrowsword,” Avarn-Oxolt told the media after the match. “But we’ve got to play better. & we’ve especially got to defend better. I was hoping a 5-3-2 would help with that. Clearly, it didn’t. I think we’ll have to implement more radical solutions at the back for our next match, against Omerica.”

After reaching as high as second, Qusmo has fallen to eighth in Group 11 - & if they lose again to Omerica, they will tumble to at least ninth, & will have taken only one point from their last seven matches. One thing that is certain after the match against Ceni is that Qusmo is in need of a change. However, what remains to be seen is whether Avarn-Oxolt can deliver that change in the matches to come.

Qusmo National Team triumphant over Omerica

After five losses & no wins in their last six matches, Qusmo finally broke through to defeat Omerica 3-1 in Atlem.

The victory was enabled by stronger play from the Qusma defense, as they matched their best performance in the six-game skid by conceding only one goal. This may have been spurred by drastic changes manager Avarn-Oxolt Ban made to their lineup.

To begin, Avarn-Oxolt removed goalkeeper Xynat-Evela Cuf from the Starting XI. Xynat-Evela had been the starting goalkeeper for the national team since matchday one, & was the only Qusma player to play the entirety of all eight matches of the campaign to that point. Instead, they were replaced by Vanza-Jerat Gep, the KF Qastyr goalkeeper who had been narrowly beaten out to the starting job initially. Xynat-Evela had played well early in the campaign to secure a firm hold on the national team job, but their poor recent form prompted the manager to make a change.

“Just take a look at our recent performance,” Avarn-Oxolt challenged. “We had conceded in six straight matches, & we picked up only one point from all of them. We had conceded fifteen in our last six, ten in our last three, eight in our last two, & five in our last match. Our defense & our goalkeeping just wasn’t performing as well as they had been for our first two matches, when they combined for two clean sheets. Something had to change. I made sure that change happened.”

Avarn-Oxolt did not stop there; they also altered the composition of their back line. Lucex-Ilinx Opu, Yelto-Alfan Ono, & Cunix-Betva Tla were all on the initial Starting XI, but Avarn-Oxolt has suspended Lucex-Ilinx ever since they yielded a red card & a penalty against unranked Gopnikea in matchday three that resulted in Qusmo’s first concession of the campaign. In their stead, Zenon-Gerol Kal - the only reserve centreback called up to the initial twenty-five-player roster - took the helm at centreback, & Ozolx-Alfan Ixi was called up to that roster simply to provide depth.

However, dissatisfied with their recent performance, Avarn-Oxolt decided to change things at the back. They pulled Yelto-Alfan Ono, who had started all eight matches of the campaign to that point, & replaced them with Ozolx-Alfan Ixi, the depth player who had never before gotten a start on the national team, &, in fact, was not even on the squad until matchday four.

The rest of the squad was left intact, though, & the offense was able to keep its recent momentum; despite its defensive woes, Qusmo had scored five goals in its past two matches, after all. After a clear early case of nerves & poor communication, understandable for such a new centreback trio, yielded a corner kick, Omerican midfielder Elise Bianchi was able to score on a header in the tenth minute. However, Qusmo played superbly from that point on.

New starter Ozolx-Alfan was able to make an important tackle of Morgan Barzetti as they approached the box, & they immediately were able to start on a counterattack. A few quick passes later, the ball was at the feet of Qusma striker Xilit-Zaxac Yol. They were able to steer past Omerican centreback Jesús Cruz & fire into the back of the net to equalize in the twenty-fourth minute.

Until halftime, & even for the initial portion of the second half, the Qusmi’y & Les Incorrigibles held in a 1-1 deadlock, with both defenses performing admirably. However, Qusmo was able to break through twenty minutes into the second period. Omerican right midfielder Fernand Michelakakis brought Qusma left midfielder Kynda-Sevet Pec down hard near the edge of the box, prompting a free kick. Only convincing protestations from the team in white & yellow prevented Michelakakis from getting booked, but the true damage had already been done. Xilit-Zaxac Yol took the free kick & recorded a brace in the sixty-sixth minute.

The Omerican attack started to pick up urgency from that point onward, especially after the seventy-fifth minute mark. They wanted to secure points from their match in Qusmo - possibly even three. That did seem within reach, but another one of Avarn-Oxolt’s patented triple substitutions helped put it out of reach for Les Incorrigibles.

In the seventy-first minute, the manager removed centreback Cunix-Betva Tla & midfielders Ilinx-Vulav Ixi & Kynda-Sevet Pec from the match. In their place, the manager ushered in Karar-Nirlo Hus to left defense, Nirlo-Betva Uzo to right defense, & Ilinx-Iblix Tla to right midfield. It not only created a 4-4-2, but it also gave Ilinx-Iblix their first national team cap & made them the twenty-fifth Qusma player to play for their national team. Of all the Qusma players to be called up to the national team roster at any point, only third-choice goalkeeper Prant-Telew Wek has not played during the first half of qualification.

The combination worked, as the four-player back line was able to bottle up the determined Omerican defense. Even the new midfielder was able to make a mark in their first match, as they used their fresh legs to rush down the right edge of the pitch - a soft spot on the Qusma team so far - & cross the ball to Rilan-Jerat Nev, who converted to put the game out of reach for Omerica in the eighty-fifth minute.

Qusmo finally had broken their long winless streak, & much of the praise after the match went to the two newly capped members of the team. “It was really an incredible feeling to get called up,” first-time starting centreback Ozolx-Alfan Ixi gushed, “and it was amazing to get my first cap in Yesopalitha. But to be entrusted with the honour of being a part of our nation’s Starting XI was a truly humbling experience. I hope that I’ve been able to prove today that I am capable of playing on this team, & that I deserve a spot on the Starting XI in the future. &, if I get that honour again, I will be sure to seize the opportunity I have been given.”

Some did question Avarn-Oxolt’s depth at centreback, though, & their choice of Ozolx-Alfan for the Starting XI, given their unlikely path to the pitch in Atlem. “Desperate? Are you mad? Our defense just wasn’t clicking. We conceded five goals the last time we took the pitch. Today, we only let one get through the net. We’ve only notched a single point in our past six matches. Today, we earned three. Personally, I’d say that’s a mark of great success, & certainly not one of desperation.”

Below are the results of the promotion playoffs for each of the domestic football leagues in the Fuzpon Qusma pyramid. Every league, except Puga Qusmyra, has a promotion playoff at the end of the season; these are single-legged, single-elimination tournaments between the top four league finishers which did not automatically qualify for promotion. For clubs in Pug Qusma, this means that the clubs which finished the league season in third through sixth compete; in all leagues below Pug Qusma, the clubs which finish the league season in second through fifth compete in a promotion playoff, referred to in Qusmu as a Puk Buvanorata.

All participants are seeded based on their final league rank; the higher seeded club in a Puk Buvanorata match plays host in the match, & the highest-seeded participant plays the lowest-seeded participant in the Puk Buvanorata semifinals. The clubs which win their respective Puky Buvanorata earn the right to compete in the next-highest tier of Qusma football in the following season of competition.
