In our fourth attempt - and the first one in which our representants weren't the guys, but the Savojar Women's National Team - we made the World Cup proper for the first time in a dramatic home draw against Eshan. While the Savojars were historically lower ranked, many local observers actually favoured our ladies thanks to their aggressive, attractive play in the qualification that kept them ahead of multiverse giants Vilita for most of the campaign. However, their tank burned out towards the end of it and in the second half of the Savojar qualification campaign, they lost their top spot to the world's number 3 and were forced into a playoff duel.
In this duel, they spectacularly beat Eshan 2-4 away thanks to two goals by Sigurdsdottir and one each by Jarkasjärvi and Otalainen. The euphoria for the rematch at the Carl Gustaf Bjurman was extreme, with the country having the World Cup ahead of them. The team was greeted by a choreo on the stands which used white and blue smoke bombs combined with red flares to create a giant Savojar flag with a brightly burning red star in its middle. The display seems to have done its job of motivating the Savojar team, who forced Eshan to score four goals early on as Sigurdsdottir headed a cross by Reskilainen to the bottom right corner. At the end of the game, Savojarna had held their opponents to a 2-2 draw, celebrating their first World Cup euphorically. But what are the chances for said World Cup?

Our Team

Additionally to the 23-woman-roster from the qualification campaign, coach Lise Asbeck had nominated seven additional players to her pre-WC-camp. Of those, only two have managed to challenge the squad: Victoria Maersk, who was substituted in three games of the second half of qualification following the injury of Pernilla Johansson, replaced Karin Persson who failed to make an impact at the highest level. Somewhat more surprisingly, Denise Rydberg was replaced by the 24 year old CB Nina Rasmussen. Asbeck explained the decision with fitness issues with Rydberg after the CB got lightly injured in a game with her club, FFK Valdhavn, but also said that Rasmussen, who was a central part in her club's surprising run to the vice championship, was more convincing overall.

In defence, the team remains the weakest spot, but overall solid with Viktorija Petrova being the unchallenged goalkeeper. There were recently some criticisms that the Savojar backs were too offensive, but this has also been used as a dangerous weapon in the past, as Reskilainen and Midström managed many important assists and even some goals. We have seen in the past that we sometimes struggle against fast, counter-attacking teams, which could be dangerous against two top squads of the Multiverse in the death group we got for our World Cup debut. The midfield, while not having the star power of the offence, has proven crucial in the qualification. An interesting struggle may break out between routined Pernilla Johansson, who played a strong first six matches before getting injured in a tackle against Norcambria. She was subsequently replaced in the squad by Victoria Maersk and by Lenka Otalainen on the pitch. Otalainen is a very different player from the slower, more defensive and more solid Johansson. With Ekaterina Vailova and Stefanie Raukanen also being more defensive players, it isn't unlikely that Asbeck will opt for the more dynamic Otalainen, with the option to remove her later for Vailova or Johansson. Finally, the forward position is dominated by Freya Sigurdsdottir. The 25 year old striker has led the team in scoring from the beginning of the campaign, assisted by Jarkasjärvi's speed on the left flank. The slight weakness in the attack is the right flank, where Haakonson showed few weaknesses, but could also hardly exceed expectations.

The Group

Unfortunately for Savojarna, they got drawn into a veritable group of death. The first opponent of the Savojar women is going to be played against Brenecia, the world's number 8 and one of the worst teams to draw from the second pot. They qualified as the first team in the entire multiverse, with only two losses and one draw in a group including Savojarna's old WCQ 77 rivals Juvencus. Other opponents included Sargossa and Tobiasia, meaning that this group was not easy for them either. Savojarna and Brenecia have history as well, crossing paths in our initial WCQ campaign where they could challenge the Brenecians twice, but benefitted from a crisis of their higher ranked opponents. With this being the opening game of the World Cup, we are probably going to see a highly motivated and well-prepared team. They are typically rather defensive, and if Savojarna come on aggressively and attempt to pressure the favourites, they could have a chance to score an early goal. Everything else is probably going to end in a Brenecian victory, as turning a match against this team once they are behind could be highly difficult.

Following this, we will face off against 26th-ranked Damukuni in what is likely going to be a do-or-die match for both teams. Damukuni got a tough group including the ice hockey dominators of Valanora, 95X, former Baptism of Fire winner and favourite-killer Filindostan as well as the Alpine Union. In this potential death-group, an unexpected victory of Razenthuria against 95X and a last-day victory of Damukuni against Savalen got them second place behind the Vanorians. Against Maryloupe, they showed their full offensive potential with an aggregated 5-0 despite being a rather defensive side as well. Savojarna will have to act posturing and play aggressively again, but Damukuni are likely less dangerous in their counter-attacks than Brenecia. A victory in this game is in the realm of possible as well as necessary if the Savojars want any shot at the octofinals on the last day.

The third match will be the toughest, against Eura. Around last WCQ, we remember having had an international incident on our hands after they had allegedly supported the Liberal Party in an election. Despite this incident, we hope that our match against the Euran squad will go over without any nasty scenes on the stands, even though the fans will probably sing the International quite a bit louder than usual. Facing Apox, Nova Anglicana and our neighbours Taeshan, Eura won their group relatively comfortable with only two losses and one draw. This demonstration of skill makes Eura a hot favourite for this group of death and possibly even the World Cup as a whole. Our best shot at an upset against Eura is probably that the Savojars will need three points, while the Eurans may already have qualified and be a bit less aggressive. We can expect an offensive game against the WC 73 champions, as both teams play a similar, fairly attacking style compared to other teams like Brenecia.

The opening match for Savojarna comes tonight at 19:00 Savojar time against Brenecia, played in the Elements Stadium at Ponyville, Equestrian States. It will be broadcast live on STV2 from 18:30 onwards, like all World Cup matches. The World Cup magazine "EqueStar Compact" will be broadcast every day after the last game of the day on STV2.

For Hannah Miller, it was the tensest ninety minutes of football she'd ever played. Every move they made, every missed chance to get on the scoreboard, every desperate save from the Barunian defenders replayed over and over in her mind. Never in her life had the captain's armband felt heavier around her arm as she struggled to spur her team onwards. All the time, the clock slowly counted down: 30 minutes to go, 20, 10. That was when Johnson pulled Hannah off. Kyrow jogged over and took the captain's armband, she slapped Holland on the back as he ran on to replace her, and then she collapsed over the sideline, completely spent. It wasn't the running around that was so exhausting, it was being constantly on the edge, knowing that at any second everything could be for nothing. Waiting for the one moment that would end all your hopes and dreams of a World Cup. A single goal for Tumbra here and now, and it would be over. Hannah spent the last ten minutes of the match watching in a state of nervous apprehension, as Williams was tested time and time again in goal. Then suddenly it was over, and without a single goal scored Barunia were through to the World Cup.

Hannah collapsed to the ground in sheer relief, sobbing as the rest of the Barunian bench leapt to their feet. Then she was being pulled up and embraced by Sarah Brown. Together the pair ran to embrace the rest of the team, who had joined in a massive group hug on the pitch. Then she was being pulled into the centre, and everyone was hugging and cheering. All Hannah could remember of that moment was the sound of wordless cheering, a blur of blue, and absolute joy. She'd never felt like that on a football field before. No matter what the World Cup might bring, she would always treasure that moment.

The next few days were a blur. Celebration drinks at a private function that night, then press conferences the next day before she was summoned to Barrett House to be formally congratulated by the Secretary-General. That caused her some anxiety of a different kind: exactly what does one wear when meeting your country's Head of State. Previous captains had all worn suits, but then she was the first woman to hold the role. In the end, she went for a black cocktail dress. She got comments from the reporters of course, but had they really expected her to show up in her football uniform? The event itself was a whirlwind of guests, she was thanked by both the secretary-general and the prime minister, and then it was finally done. That night, alone in her apartment, Hannah took a moment to relax, to bask in the quiet, and celebrate with herself. Finally, after so much heartache and near misses, Hannah Miller could finally call herself a World Cup captain.

Years later, members of the Darmeni Society of Footballing History examined the diary of All Greens Manager Godefroy Abascal, and discovered the following, complete with newspaper clippings of the boxscores...

Darmen 0–1 South Toronto
Any time you start a new campaign, the first matches are always the toughest. I expected us to be sloppy, not only in passing but in tackling as well. Turns out it was our finishing that suffered the most. Oh well, it can only get better from here!
Campo - Virgo, Abbey, Porsche - Goldschmidt - Ó Cuilinn, Winton, Butler, Stafford - Lucanus, Blackwood
GOALS: None
Yellow Cards: Goldschmidt 42'
Red Cards: None
Substitutions: Ramírez for Goldschmidt HT, Freud for Stafford 66', Maddox for Porsche 73'

Commonwealth of Baker Park 2–1 Darmen
I had originally planned to start tinkering with the lineup here for this match, but after the result of the first I decided not to take any chances. That didn't do me any good. The team lost again, falling apart defensively in the second half after we went into the dressing rooms up 1-0.
Campo - Virgo, Abbey, Porsche - Goldschmidt - Ó Cuilinn, Winton, Butler, Stafford - Lucanus, Blackwood
GOALS: Blackwood 39'
Yellow Cards: None
Red Cards: None
Substitutions: Mac Pharlain for Ó Cuilinn 57', Firmin for Lucanus 87', Byrnes for Butler 87'

Darmen 3–0 North Dajao
A weak opponent, perfect for some tinkering in the lineup. I decided to play in a 4-5-1 formation, completely changing things up. The look on the North Dajaoan manager when they realized we weren't lining up in our normal 3-1-4-2 was absolutely hilarious. Almost like he had seen his mother-in-law naked or something. Daniel Abram played well in goal.
Abram - Wilkie, Coghlan, Krämer, Maddox - Armbruster, Parks, Favreau, McNeil, Welch - Puig
GOALS: Parks 17', Puig 38', McNeil 77'
Yellow Cards: None
Red Cards: None
Substitutions: Tobias for Favreau 63' (4-5-1 to 4-1-4-1), Spalding for Maddox 68', Cardoso for Parks 79'

Newmanistan 0–3 Darmen
A shell of their former selves, Newmanistan aren't the challenge they used to be. Nonetheless, I returned to the 3-1-4-2, but still kept a few of the normal starting XI on the bench.
Falkenrath - Deniaud, Abbey, Lyne - Goldschmidt - Ó Cuilinn, Winton, O'Sullivan, Stafford - Hurst, Russell
GOALS: Hurst 28', Winton 56', Hurst 81'
Yellow Cards: O'Sullivan 37'
Red Cards: None
Substitutions: Reagan for Russell HT, Butler for O'Sullivan 63', Virgo for Deniaud 82'

Darmen 0–0 Kita-Hinode
Our first major challenge was an out of form Kita-Hinode. Their goalkeeper frustrated us all day in a brilliant performance. Can't fault our boys too much, they did what they were told and just couldn't come up with a goal.
Campo - Virgo, Abbey, Porsche - Goldschmidt - Ó Cuilinn, Winton, Butler, Stafford - Lucanus, Blackwood
GOALS: None
Yellow Cards: None
Red Cards: None
Substitutions: Coghlan for Abbey 63', Parks for Winton 63', Maddox for Porsche 77'

Darmen 3–2 Great Chota
I may have gone a tad too far with the tinkering here. I played Ranulf Langlais as a lone winger on the left side in a 3-5-1-1. Well it worked on offense, we were susceptible to the counter-attack and just barley secured three points. Up top, Julián Ventura was a bust. Probably won't be playing him again.
Knopp - Virgo, Abbey, Spalding - Ó Cuilinn, Parks, Favreau, Butler, Freud - Langlais - Ventura
GOALS: Parks 26', Freud 52', Butler 69'
Yellow Cards: Ventura 48'
Red Cards: None
Substitutions: Puig for Ventura 49', Welch for Freud 73', Wilkie for Virgo 84'

South Covello 0–1 Darmen
Honestly, I expected to lose this match. Especially playing away from home. But Lucanus is Lucanus, and his goal proved enough.
Campo - Virgo, Abbey, Porsche - Goldschmidt - Ó Cuilinn, Winton, Butler, Stafford - Lucanus, Blackwood
GOALS: Lucanus 71'
Yellow Cards: None
Red Cards: None
Substitutions: Coghlan for Abbey 73', Vaughn for Lucanus 85', Byrnes for Butler 85'

Darmen 1–0 Main Nation Ministry
After our victory against South Covello, I expected a bit more from the lads. Oh well, three points is three points.
Campo - Virgo, Abbey, Porsche - Goldschmidt - Ó Cuilinn, Winton, Butler, Stafford - Lucanus, Blackwood
GOALS: Ó Cuilinn 65'
Yellow Cards: None
Red Cards: None
Substitutions: Ramírez for Goldschmidt 75', Byrnes for Butler 83', Russell for Blackwood 83'

Coldfield 0–0 Darmen
A boring snooze fest. Plenty disappointed in the team. A victory and three points would have put us in second place at the halfway point of qualifying.
Campo - Wilkie, Abbey, Porsche - Goldschmidt - Ó Cuilinn, Winton, Butler, Freud - Firmin, Russell
GOALS: None
Yellow Cards: None
Red Cards: None
Substitutions: McNeil for Butler 56', Coghlan for Abbey 68', Blackwood for Russell 68'

Wide-eyed Kadongo Kamu arrive in the Equestrian States for the opening match of World Cup 80

Image
Girma Asmelash(#21) celebrates winner in friendly with Ansu Cisse(#18) against Qusmo in a World Cup warmup

CANTERLOT, EQUESTRIAN STATES- The national team, still looking like they are wide-eyed and bushy tailed, with their excitement about being Banija's first ever squad to enter the World Cup Finals, have finally arrived in the biggest city in the Equestrian States- Canterlot. Home to the national stadium, the Royal Equestria Stadium, thanks to the World Cup draw, Banija will be the other participant in the official opening match of the World Cup Finals, playing their neighbor, the World Cup co-host, and nation that they are at war with, the Equestrian States.

What a time to be alive, right? The Banijans played a pair of World Cup friendlies- first, their sendoff match in Quebec against Qusmo, then a detour via a flight to FIlindostan, before going back to Quebec to finishing training, and then flying into Canterlot International. Their warmup match in Montreal was soldout, as Banijans flocked to celebrate their accomplishment of qualifying for the World Cup Finals, as the team has not had the opportunity to celebrate on home soil yet, due to tensions with the Equestrian States. While they had a 3-1 victory in their first warmup, their last match left a foul taste in their mouths, losing 6-1 in Filindostan.

A sour taste in their mouths after a massive defeat going into the World Cup Finals but, of course, team spirits are still high. Captain Kiggwe Mavuto said that "the team could not possibly be more excited then we are right now. The opportunity to represent your country on the grandest stage in all of sports- we are blessed to be here, and we intend to do our countrymen proud." The Banijans, of course, are the second lowest ranked team in the World Cup Finals, just ahead of the Commonwealth of Baker Park, who have qualified for the Finals on their first go in the tournament. A nation, of course, the Banijans also have tensions with.

The group draw was certainly the best that Banija could have hoped for- which isn't much, considering their lowly status as the tournament's second lowest ranked side. The lowest ranked team in pot 3, New Gazi, as well as the lowest ranked team in pot 1, the Equestrian States, is something that is fortunate. Of course, the Equestrian States are playing on home soil, though Banija lost to them in Busukuma in their only matchup, a friendly during the World Cup 79 cycle. Vilita are the overwhelming favorites, to win the group, being ranked 13th, 22 places ahead of the next best team, New Gazi(35). That said, Banija is ranked 21 places behind the hosts(41), so we still are not expected to do much.

Still, what an opportunity this is, right? Banija, thanks to the draw, will participate in the official opening match of the World Cup Finals, in what will surely be a tense game. A match between two nations where tensions are high, the host nation being home to a large Banijan migrant population, and national team players on both sides playing in each other's respective domestic leagues, has all the billings of what will surely be an entertaining opening to the 80th edition of the World Cup Finals. And finally, Banija's new manager is a national of the Equestrian States. So many subplots to what should be a fantastic opening match, befitting the 80th edition of the world's greatest tournament. And this match, of course, is one that comes with all the pop and circumstance of a World Cup opener, where both teams will be gunning for a win. Even as a neutral, what more could you ask for in a World Cup opening match? And as a fan of Banija, that just makes it all that much better.

Of course, we should get into a match preview. Can we shock the world, and upset the hosts, here at Royal Equestria Stadium, in the opening match of the World Cup Finals? The behemoth of a stadium, seating nearly 99,000, will surely be packed to capacity. And while there will be a spattering of Banijan fans throughout the stadium, with the large migrant community and the geographical proximity of the two nations, this is their national stadium- they will have a distinct home field advantage, especially when you consider the spectacle of the opening match of the World Cup Finals. They will certainly have to be the odds-on favorites to win this match, but the Banijans surely have the ability to put the Equestrian States on upset alert.

Where do the Banijans have the ability to pull off the upset? Well, a couple of reasons. Number 1- there is almost no pressure whatsoever on the Banijans in this tournament. As the second lowest ranked side, each team they are going up against will be gunning for a victory, as all three opponents have the ability to get to the knockout stages of this tournament. That means against Vilita, the Equestrian States, and New Gazi, their opponents will be committing men forward, trying to overwhelm the Banijans. The national team should try to start early, and often. You'll need players like Kiggwe Mavuto and Isaac Georgiadis to step up and play on the front foot early, to try and not only create opportunities early, but take them at first opportunity. That will be the key to defeating a strong host nation side, in the tournament's opening match.

What should we expect to see from the hosts? Well, they have a talented roster that can certainly cause the Banijans quite a few problems. First, of course, is Gentle Breeze. She is one of those who can seriously compete for the Golden Glove award in this tournament, and is widely considered a global top 10 goalkeeper. She is absolutely stellar in the net- it will take something special to beat her, especially on this big occasion. She has been seen by Gitonga Kahara, who plays in the same area, but she will be incredibly tough to beat. For a relatively potent Banijan attack, the last line of defense for the host nation is most certainly the strongest line of defense.

Their biggest threat among their field players, has to be Pristina Shine. With 59 career goals, she will be leading the attack and trying to make an impression in front of the home crowd. Even manager Marcus Waters said that she is a 'stunning player who has a unique combination of size, speed, and skill that makes her deadly. You can't keep her silent- however, you know that you must pay her special attention, or she'll kill you'. He, of course, wouldn't tell us about his plans to try and stop her, though rumors are flying around that they will use some version of the Jordan rules with her, considering how she's a unicorn and the Banijans have a pair of bigger, physical players in the back.

Do not expect the Banijan outside backs to go forward, almost ever. The Equestrians are strong and pacy, and if the wingbacks are caught too far forward, a counter-attack would bury the Banijans. Expect the wingbacks to be cautious, as well as the center backs, with at least one of the central midfielders hanging back. The Equestrians are far too quick to allow them the space to bury you with a counter-attack, which is something that Marcus Waters knows well, being a national of this country and a coach within it for several years.

Ultimately, this should be an entertaining clash to set up what should be an entertaining finals. It will be back and forth, but we'll predict a 4-2 Equestrian victory. Home field advantage for the ponies will loom large, who are looking to open up the tournament at home with some momentum against the group's lowest ranked squad. The Banijans will play well, of course, but too much speed, especially late in the game, from the Equestrians will be hard to overcome as the Banijans tire, leaving our boys susceptible to allowing some late goals.

That said- we hope everyone gives this one a watch. The World Cup opener, the opening ceremonies, and Banija's first ever game in the World Cup FInals? What isn't there to be excited about? As always, go Banija!

To Brobdingnag We Go
Chapter Eleven: Goodbye Iarocav, Hello Metropolon

Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Chapter 5 | Chapter 6 | Chapter 7 | Chapter 8 | Chapter 9 | Chapter 10

"Alas, my friends, I must return to the work of governing," says Iarocav as the group piles into one of his personal vehicles, tired after another day of sightseeing. "I can't show you guys around the city forever, however much I might like to do so."

Tears glisten in Sarah's eyes as she says goodbye to the immortal Drawkian. "Why must you go?" she asks melodramatically, extending her arms as if to hug the guy.

However, Iarocav spurns her advances. "You know full well that I'm happily married, Sarah."

"Pardon my daughter," interjects Seth, "but she tends to get a bit horny when she gets excited. And I dare say that she looks excited right about now."

"Stop it, please," says Andrew. "All this flirting can wait until later. Better yet, it can stop." He pauses. "Thank you for the tour, Iarocav. We appreciated your insights and perspectives."

"Speak for yourself," Sarah mutters under her breath. "I didn't appreciate going to boring old museums." She snorts, now dismissive of the time she spent with the Drawkionel instead of clinging on to every last moment.

"Sarah is excited!" exclaims Seth. "Mercurial and bipolar - that's the horny Sarah I know."

"Shut up!" she screams, the monster inside of her emerging.

"Well, it was nice to meet you guys, too," says Iarocav casually. "Especially the footballing wonder, known far and wide across the seven seas."

Andrew shakes hands with Iarocav. Seth follows suit, and Sarah has to settle for the impersonal handshake rather than the personal hug. While shaking his hand, she gets in a dig at Andrew. "Well, glad to know that the seven seas know who I am," she says, "I didn't think they followed football all that much."

Andrew rolls his eyes. "Shut up."

"They're just like three-year olds, just getting to know each other, eh?" says Iarocav, chuckling.

"Yeah," concedes Seth. "Yeah." Just like that, Iarocav turns away and leaves, waving.

The three stare at each other. "Where to?" asks Andrew.

"Metropolon," Sarah says firmly. Nobody dares to argue with her.

METROPOLON
The Drawkians have the gall to call this city, a mere nine hundred and fifty three years ago, "new." History books depict the construction of the city, based on Iarocav's design, as an effortless feat, a paragon of Drawkian efficiency, in words that intimate that Drawkians do this kind of thing every day. In truth, the endeavor took many years and much effort to complete. The history books also claim that once Iarocav had declared this city the legislative capital of Drawkland, the city's population mushroomed over the course of just a decade, although this claim seems more plausible than the last.

Despite the lore surrounding the city's creation, though, several facts cannot be disputed. The perfectly symmetrical city sits on a perfectly circular island, with a perfectly planned grid system and subway system below mirroring the above-ground layout, and the skyline curves upward in a perfect parabola to reach a pinnacle in the tallest building in Drawkland, the Pinnapex. Home to 20 million people, the city remains a paradigm of the Drawkian penchant for perfection and modernism, itself a reflection of their successful attempts to bend nature to their will.

"So, we're here," says Andrew after their three-hour airship ride to Metropolon, Drawkland's second city.

"Thank you, Captain Obvious!" The sarcasm in Sarah's voice shines through, like a solitary flashlight in a murky cave. She sighs. "I've always wanted to spend a bit of time here, in the most orderly city in the world. Perfect grids on an island shaped like a perfect circle."

Andrew shakes his head. "Entropy and chaos rule Earth. This Drawkian propensity for neat grids and artfully planned parabolic skyscrapers unnerves me. I prefer the organic, natural growth of cities back home, the warren-like mazes of cattywampus buildings and haphazard traffic patterns. Could I live here? I doubt it."

"I see we're avoiding the elephant in the room," Seth says. He points to the Pinnapex, the tall tower dominating the Metropolon skyline, the city's cynosure. The usual panoply of flying vehicles avoid the hulking tower, gleaming with the reflection of the bright Sonnel sun. "I don't doubt that Andrew would like to tour it."

"We're tourists," he says. "We tour things, even if they unnerve us."

"I'll drink to that," says Sarah. "By the way, order trumps disorder. So Drawkland's better."

"Nuh uh," retorts Andrew. The siblings' catfight continues all the way to the base of tower.

THE PINNAPEX
Sitting smack-dab in the heart of Metropolon, the Pinnapex represents, quite literally, the pinnacle of Drawkian engineering and architecture. Even Drawkians must crane their necks to see the top of the building, a golden orb crowning the building. For some reason, many foreigners call it "Iarocav's Compensation Knob," perhaps in reference to its resemblance to a certain... phallic organ and Iarocav's penchant to glorify himself. Nevertheless, one can accomplish any kind of function in the Pinnapex: you could literally live your entire life without leaving the skyscraper and its offices, apartments, recreational facilities, and commercial outlets. Of course, a system of state-of-the-art elevators integrates the building into one living, breathing, complex system. Well, it's just a building, but an impressive building nonetheless.

"So this is the elephant in the room," says Andrew. "This big-ass tower. Why exactly did you build it?"

"Mostly to prove that we could," admits Sarah. "Still, it's still a massive feat of engineering, and something we can admire. Shall we go up?"

It takes Andrew a moment to take in the enormity of the structure, but he nods nonetheless. "Let's go up." The massive elevator seems to take the Arrowswords up forever, and Andrew almost gets dizzy trying to comprehend the building's size. Of course, the Drawkians, with their larger frames, can wrap their heads around it a bit easier, leaving him at a distinct disadvantage. Finally, the elevator dings, and the Arrowswords step out to see glass in front of them, glass behind them, glass all around them. Metropolon stretches in a perfect circle around them, and in the distance, the sun glistens on the surrounding lake. "Here," says Andrew, "you begin to realize how small you are, in the grand scheme of things."

"Andrew," says Sarah, smiling, "we've barely looked at the grand scheme of things. We've showed you two cities so far."

"I've begun to realize it," says Andrew. "Please let me be!" The other Arrowswords let him be for a while, while he takes in Metropolon, as seen from above. When he's had his fill, they troop back towards the elevator to begin the nearly interminable descent, exploring some of the nearly endless floors below them. Shopping malls - nightclubs - fancy restaurants - the establishments within the building represent almost an entire city. This wows Andrew. "Damn," he says. "This whole marvelously engineered tower business is making me hungry - and there certainly isn't a dearth of places to choose from!"

The group sits down in what appears to be the Drawkian version of a disco joint, playing upbeat renditions of some of the classical Drawkian composers. It serves classic sandwiches, nothing special, and Andrew orders an Italian sub: salami, sausage, the like. Sitting down at a retro table, the Arrowswords munch away silently, exhausted after exploring so much of the almost infinitely large Pinnapex. As he takes the last bite of his sandwich, Seth suggests the next stop on their tour: the Drawkian capitol. Sarah and Andrew agree, reluctantly, but they head there anyway.

THE CAPITOL
When the Drawkians built Metropolon, they built the Drawkian Capitol building to host the Drawkian legislature. It looks like what you'd expect it to look like: a building with big ass dome in the center of the city. Covered in gold foil, the dome is bigger than a normal dorm, and appears to have delusions of grandeur (because all buildings in Drawkland have delusions of grandeur). A massive atrium at the center features a sparkling chandelier, glistening with the light of a thousand stars, and never fails to inspire a sense of awe in the foreigners who dare to venture between its ornate bronze doors. Offices of the various Drawkian bigwigs and functionaries line its corridors, which end in ornately decorated chambers for the aforementioned bigwigs and functionaries to yak about the technicalities of legislation. Of course, famous Drawkian works of art dot the halls here and there.

"Why are we even here?" asks Andrew. "I've already seen quite a few capitol buildings; they never differ from each other."

"Because Drawkland buildings always manage to out-do their counterparts on Earth," says Sarah. "Because we want to show you that everything is bigger on Sonnel."

"Nobody can argue against that," says Andrew, muttering. "You guys need to show off everything to me, don't you?"

"I can't help it that we're just taller than you," says Sarah. "That's probably why you think we're showing off."

Seth smiles, and guides his children into the capital's rotunda. "I actually want to see this building. So if you could please shut up and let the tour guide speak, I would appreciate that a lot."

The two shut up.

-BREAKING NEWS-
BANIJA DECLARES WAR ON EQUESTRIA!
Skirmish off of Busoga Islands Leads to Open Conflict in Atlantian Oceania
by Sudden Spark

CANTERLOT - Early this morning, a confrontation between the Equestrian and Banijan navies spiraled out of control and has plunged the Southwest Atlantian Oceania neighbors into open war. The Equestrian Royal Navy was escorting the Generosity - a relief ship carrying food, medical supplies, and aid workers - to the beleaguered Busoga Islands when they were approached by ships belonging to the Banijan Navy. Mirroring the incident two weeks ago when the Angelic Breeze was attacked and sunk by the Banijan Navy, the Banijans were informed of the ships' mission to deliver aid to the Busoga Islands and were attacked when they attempted to proceed. The Equestrian Royal Navy responded in kind, opening fire on and ultimately destroying the Banijan attackers according to a release from the Defense Ministry.

The skirmish sparked a flurry of late night activity in and around Canterlot Palace as the Equestrian government scrambled to respond to the looming conflict. According to the Foreign Ministry, last-ditch diplomatic efforts from the Equestrian States were unsuccessful and rejected outright by the Banijan head of government Katikkiro Matthias Mutebi. The Katikkiro's policies of antagonizing Equestria as well as other nations in the region has finally borne their expected fruit, and the Banijan Lukiiko voted early this morning to declare war on the Equestrian States at Mutebi's urging.

A brief statement from Princess Celestia herself was released minutes after the Banijan declaration of war was passed: "Once again Equestria finds itself under attack by a hostile foreign nation. It pains me that we have been unable to resolve this matter with words, but we will not back down from assisting those suffering in the Busoga Islands. If we must fight to bring relief to those in need, we will, and we will use all our might to achieve victory as swiftly as possible."

The Royal Council has scheduled a joint emergency session with Parliament this afternoon where it is expected that they will request a formal declaration of war on Banija and the deploying of Equestrian forces to the Taruu Sea and the Busoga Islands.

The immediate public response to the Banijan declaration of war has been one of perplexed outrage, with few apparently expecting the Banijan government to actually go so far as to declare war on a neighboring superpower like the Equestrian States. Among the growing Banijan-Equestrian population, the cries for Katikkiro Matthias Mutebi to be removed from power - by force if necessary - have seemingly doubled in strength overnight. Mutebi has never been popular among the the Banijan emigrant community which the embattled leader has openly decried as traitors, but never before has he provoked such outrage. Reports from Royal Guard and Royal Army recruitment centers in Stalliongrad, home to one of the largest Equestrian-Banijan populations, indicate an overwhelming surge of new recruits early this morning in response. Meanwhile, in Seaddle, home port of the Equestrian Royal Navy's Second Fleet, a scramble of activity around the Royal Navy Headquarters and the local port suggests that the fleet will soon be deployed in response to the most recent attack, with sailors being ordered to report to their stations as soon as possible.

Once again the Equestrian States faces a war with a belligerent foreign nation, but this time much closer to home than ever before.

Torgos Tribune ~ And Now We Are Here

It was far from pretty in that first half and full of brilliance in the second half, with the Wanderers eventually getting their automatic qualifying spot booked in the game against second place in the group Qasden, with Thor coming off the bench and nabbing the goal that would seal the qualification for the Wanderers. The second half became a show of the two youthful strikers of Alexander Kárpáty and Alexander Jager, with the two partnering together for over twenty goals in four games and giving the Wanderers the streak of results needed to relieve the stress that had been swirling around the side after a very lackluster showing in the first half of the qualifying campaign. That is to say nothing of the work that Thorsten Gerber did between the sticks in those four games, with the third choice keeper getting a run out of games and conceding just once in that string of games, solidifying his claim to be on the plane to the Finals. Many players either helped or hindered their cause in that second half display and now that the tournament is just a few days away, the final twenty-three players that are making the trip to the Equestrian States can be revealed.

At the goalkeeping position, Patrik Horčička retains his spot in the team though Gerber is making a hard press to steal the number one kit away from the Baskita FC keeper. While the Eagles keeper was at times a bit sloppy during the first half of the qualifiers, for many of the goals that the Wanderers conceded in the first half, it was hardly the keeper's fault and with the form that he has had in the domestic game the last two seasons, it would be nearly impossible to keep him from making the team. Gerber stole the second spot and guaranteed his spot on the plane with those performances that helped the Wanderers claim the group title in the qualifiers, with a number of reflex saves that kept the team from crumbling as they had done in the first half. While his domestic results have not been up to the same pace as Horčička, the sheer natural talent that the keeper has more than makes up for that small difference in form that the two have. Gordana Stanic did nothing to stand out in her few run outs but she did not do anything that would see her lose her spot either, and while she has dropped to third in the pecking order, she is still on the plane punching her tickets to the pony lands.

At the defenders spot is where the first bit of controversy arises, as captain Þorvaldur Oddsson is dropped from the squad after failing to live up to the needed standards, though he is joined in being dropped with Wolfgang Wefel who has never quite lived up to the hype and his physical attributes. Thaty means that the Wanderers will be relying on the stalwart Fosse and the eldest of the Földessy brothers to sure up the backline, to provide the sort of cover that the good crop of keepers that the Wanderers have will need in order to make the saves that are expected from them. The less said about the Wanderers' leftback quandary the better, as the side will hope that Friedmann continues to seemingly be made of steel and not need rest nor pick up injury as none of the back up options have particularly impressed, though Jäntti gets the call as she has had a few decent domestic campaign the last few years. At right back, the side has a good choice to make between the taller and more defensive orientated Dirk Freitag or the pacy Linka Polak whose attacking and defensive prowess has not gone unnoticed both domestically and now with the national team. With Oddsson being dropped, the captaincy has been awarded to Fosse, as the OAS Royal defender has earned the respect of the locker room with his play and composure.

In the midfield, you have you usual suspects of Jörg Feierabend and Tar Hunor, with Eisenhower also a no doubt pick, as the three central midfielders have built up quite the comradeship and chemistry together when out on the pitch. The last spot was a toss up, with eventually Haik getting the nod after a series of good performances at the end of the qualifying campaign that let him just squeak past Stéphane Couturier for that last place. The right wing selection was more difficult, as Fjóla Sigurjónsdóttir has to be in the team, while the young Ádám Berecz and the elder statesmen of Vojnomir Jovanović offered two good backup options, however it was Berecz that emerged ahead thanks in part to starting for Baskita the last two seasons as the Eagles have lifted the SuperLiga title, a solid feat for the twenty year old winger. On the left hand side, Krause puts his lessons learned from moving into Eura to good use and provided solid service on the wing for the entirety of the campaign when called upon, while Gere has the same credentials as Berecz and might offer some better understanding if the two manage to get onto the pitch together.

The most difficult selection comes at the striker position, with no less than ten players who have a good shout for making the Finals, but alas only four can make it into the team that will be traveling to the Equestrain States. With his injury completely healed up now, Thor makes the trip, as one would expect from what is considered to be one of the best strikers in the world, currently. However whether he starts or not has now become a question, with the two Alexanders making it as it was in large part to their efforts that the Wanderers were able to overcome their mediocre first half of qualifying and go on a winning streak that left all of their qualification rivals behind them. That Jager has been awarded the Young Galatico of the Year gives further credence that this young striker has all the makings to be something quite exceptional and is worthy of that spot. A surprise comes though in that it is young Mücahit Aardenburg and not one of the more veteran strikers that is the fourth forward that will be going to the Southwest of Atlanatian Oceania. With Aardenburg's inclusion, that means that three of the four strikers will be twenty-three of younger, as this as well as many of the other selections show that Mór Császár is looking to use that amazing youth that Pasarga is known for to hopefully see the team through to the knockout stages.

But what of the teams that will be standing in the Wanderers path and might derail that dream of the team and the hopes of being a dark horse contender for the title, assuming that somehow Schottia or Farfadillis slip up at some point? Well it does not get very easy with the third ranked South Covello as the first seed, though having avoided Schottia is something that any team can be thankful of with how well that squad is playing and has been put together. The Rebels have been lackluster and were not able to win their group, instead somehow wound up behind our regional rivals of Darmen in their qualifying group, and had to advance through the perils that are the playoffs. Their notorious defensiveness is going to be quite the trick to take apart, though with the likes of Feierabend and Thor, there is all the chance and the skill required to do so, though it feels more likely that a draw is on the cards.

Which means when the team takes on the third seed in Mriin, one of the best third pot teams no less, that they will have all the pressure on them to get a result, especially as they will be the last team the Wanderers will be facing and will likely be needing a result from in order to advance. This team has done well to come this far and are quite dangerous, but this is a game the Wanderers will need to win in order to advance and that pressure should see the squad raise their level to do so. Opening up the group against the fourth seeds might look like a blessing but no game is a given and with it being Darmen, who somehow did beat out the third ranked Rebels to qualify automatically from the group, there is a lot of danger in the game. With a full strength side however, this is a game that the Wanderers should relish, especially having the knowledge of how Darmen likes to play with the number of times they have seen the team compete in the Copa Rushmori. It is a difficult group all around, one of the closest in that regard, but the Wanderers are here now and they have enough skill to see themselves through to the knockouts, all things considered.

WORLD CUP 80 - EURA'S QUALIFYING REVIEW
Poor start threatened to derail Eura who turned it around to qualify with ease

Eura 2-3 Ashkam
D Sharp 47, Holmes 60

Beginning qualifying with a whimper rather than a bang stirred the fans and the media in the wrong way. A heavily rotated but nevertheless capable Euran side were outplayed in Bastion in several ways by the unlikely victors Ashkam, rookies on the international stage, in a result that would join Eura's historical list of embarrassing shock defeats. Dean Sharp and Josh Holmes goals couldn't cover up a poor performance all around, made worse by an appalling refereeing decision and bad tactical decisions by Steve Thompson that contributed to the result.

Eura 4-1 Apox
Underwood 50, 65, Armstrong 52, D Sharp 80

A game of two halves personified. At half time Bastion was restless in the extreme as Eura trailed to Lucan Palmisano's goal. Thompson's half time intervention with the help of captain Frank Ainsworth turned things around. Anthony Townsend ran riot on the right flank as Eura swept Apox aside in the first twenty minutes of the second half, Dion Underwood and Liam Armstrong netting three goals between them to put Eura in a commanding position. Apox ran out of steam after the third goal and Dean Sharp made sure there would be no comeback by the away side with an 80th minute finish.

Nova Anglicana 3–6 Eura
Underwood 7, 32, 36, Coltrane 45+1, Holmes 61, Gravesen 75

Crisis averted, or so the headlines said. Eura were back in form and were able to crush Nova Anglicana during the first half away from home, racking up a 4-0 lead by half time. Dion Underwood was the main offender. He netted a first half hat-trick as Eura brutalised the home side with a lethal combination of pace, flawless passing going forward and a preponderance of through balls. Classic Euran football of the kind the world has come to expect of the national side, on a good day at least. Oscar Coltrane’s first half stoppage time screamer was the pick of the bunch, lashed in from 30 yards. In the second half Eura took their eye off the ball somewhat and conceded two quick goals by Mathieu Garcon, but made some substitutions to restore control. Josh Holmes and Harry Gravesen both scored to make it six, before Garcon completed a memorable but futile hat-trick at the death.

Eura 1–0 Taeshan
Robson 60

Taeshan have always provided a unique challenge with their highly defensive style and this game was no different. They came to play for a point and at best snatch an improbable goal on the counter or from a set piece. Eura have played Taeshan as much as any other side over the years and knew exactly how to approach this tie, sitting back slightly and forcing the away side to come away from their goal as much as possible. The visitors defended formidably but were undone in the 60th minute by the less pace orientated and more technical Tom Robson, who unpicked the defence with a smart dribble into the box and finish under the goalkeeper.

Abaja 0–1 Eura
Harper 77

Abaja are not a bad side and many Euran’s saw this as a good result in tough territory. The home team attacked and defended adequately and were a real challenge for the Eurans in midfield. The only difference between the two sides in the end proved to be experience. Abaja started to tire as the game went on and became more wasteful with their opportunities, while Eura were able to keep running and focusing for much longer. Eura did leave it later to secure a win however – Gabriel Harper ended Abaja’s resistance in the 77th minute with a floaty deflected shot from the edge of the box, teaching the home team a useful lesson in closing down short corners.

Eura 2–2 Kosovakia
Holmes 43, Stone 63

Experimenting against Kosovakia proved costly as it had done against Ashkam, although at least this time the Euran’s avoided defeat. Kosovakia started well just like Ashkham had and buried their only shot on target of the first half, but were pinned back by Eura (playing a narrow 4-3-3 with a frontline of Miller, Holmes and Burns) when Holmes headed in an equaliser just before half time. Kosovakia must have thought it was their lucky day when they took the lead again in the second half, but they were denied a historic win by well taken William Stone finish mid-way through the second half.

Competitive Solitaire 1–3 Eura
Jones 20, Rose 67, Miller 89

Eura did rotate again when playing in Competitive Solitaire, the best named country in the group. This time it did not backfire. Eura played a 4-4-2 that was reminiscent of Bastion – Burns and Miller on the wings, Underwood and Jones up top. Jones put Eura in front with his head (to no-one’s surprise) in the first half before the home side equalised from the spot after a mistake and consequential foul by the veteran Sterling Rose. Rose then made up for his error with a curling effort to restore Eura’s lead before Miller put the game to bed, running through on goal in the final minutes to make it 1-3.

Eura 2–1 Tzerinn
Armstrong 43 (p), Coltrane 59

Restored to full strength, Eura came up against an unexpectedly strong challenge from Tzerinn who became the latest team to take the lead at a game in Bastion. They made a mockery of their status in international football with a heroic first half effort, and were unfortunate not to lead at half time; one of their defenders had tripped Underwood in the box with a late tackle and had to watch Liam Armstrong stroke home the equaliser from the spot. Heartbreakingly for them the performance did not translate well into the second half as energy levels dropped. Eura pounced, taking the lead in the 59th minute via a Coltrane finish from close range, and the score remained 2-1 at the final whistle.

Revlona 2–8 Eura
Underwood 15, 61, Townsend 22, Coltrane 38, 52, Robson 50, Holmes 71, Griffiths 85

When Revolna took the lead in the 3rd minute of their game with Eura via an absolutely stunning free kick from a tight angle they must have believed it was their turn to shock one of the heavyweights of world football. Fate disagreed on this occasion. Instead, Eura rallied after falling behind yet again and unleashed a thorough thrashing on their opponents, scoring eight goals before Revlona could respond with a soft consolation goal late in the second half. Oscar Coltrane was the obvious man of the match with an acrobatically flicked goal to make it 3-0, a second half free kick goal and three assists, but the entire team performed well and were totally ruthless on the day.

Ashkam 2–4 Eura
Underwood 8, Coltrane 14, Townsend 44, Jones 79

Turning up way ahead of schedule at their training camp was as good a sign as any that Eura were out for revenge against Ashkham. They succeeded and this time did so without going behind although there was a close call in the second half. Underwood and Coltrane established an early lead which Townsend added to just after half time making a comeback look exceedingly unlikely. Nevertheless Ashkam roared back into life with two second half goals, creating plenty of pressure in the second half and giving Eura a run for their money. Thompson was able to breathe a sigh of relief when substitute Jones scored a crucial fourth to seal victory.

Apox 2–5 Eura
Townsend 4, Underwood 19, 35, Coltrane 65, Holmes 80

The best efforts of the Palmisano brothers and their wily compatriots were not enough to stop Eura winning their most impressive victory of qualifying, avenging the defeat to the Apoxians of the previous qualification cycle and making automatic qualification a near certainty. As had been the case in all of Eura’s big victories so far in qualifying it was a dominant first half performance that did the critical damage to their opponents. Townsend continued his fine run of form with a volleyed effort in only the 4th minute, then set up Underwood to make it 2-0 with a finely floated cross from far out on the right. Underwood doubled his tally in the 35th minute from a typical sprint through the backline to latch onto a Coltrane ball, and Coltrane’s goal – an arcing, perfectly weighted shot from 25 yards – made Eura good value for a 4-0 lead. Gold League Player of the Season for Season 36 James Palmisano got Apox back into the game and then his brother Lucan added a second, but it was too little too late and Holmes would make sure of that off the bench.

Eura 2–1 Nova Anglicana
Armstrong 56, Miller 61

The home tie against Nova Anglicana was much more dull than the tour game. It was the first game of Eura’s cycle to be goalless at half time and the second half only spared all watching from a depressing 45 minutes thanks to some unexpected controversy. A Nova Anglicana midfielder was sent off for an alleged stamp shortly before Armstrong would put Eura in the lead from a corner, and then Miller came off the bench to make it two shortly after that. Nova Anglicana grabbed a deserved consolation but were unable to find an equaliser.

Taeshan 0–1 Eura
Jones 31

Being at home didn’t make Taeshan feel any need to change their tactics from the first leg. It played out a similar way too, but this time Eura got the goal they needed in the first half rather than the second. Lofty Jones, starting alongside Underwood in another 4-4-2 Bastion style lineup, powered home a shot from close range that the keeper stood no chance against after Wyatt knocked down a cross for him.

Eura 0–1 Abaja

Abaja had been tough to beat away from home and barely lost that tie, and they duly repeated that performance in Eura. This time they were rewarded for it with a shock victory, though not quite as shocking as the one inflicted on Eura on the first matchday of qualifying. The best efforts of Eura’s fearsome frontline and midfield, including the three strikers on the pitch at the end, were unable to undo a Christopher Anekwe goal that transpired to be the winner.

Kosovakia 2–6 Eura
Townsend 14, Coltrane 41, Underwood 45, 56, Stone 70, Leach 77

There would be no repeat of Kosovakia’s previous overachievement in this game. Eura came to win and did so, benefitting from an early Kosovakia red card buy winning by a large margin due to hard work and clinical finishing. Although they scored 6, none of the goals were particularly remarkable, which demonstrated how ruthless and focused Eura had become in response to the previous result.

Eura 3–0 Competitive Solitaire
Tobin 62, Holmes 68, Griffiths 72

A shock was never really on the cards here as the away side arrived with a series of injuries and faced a fully fit Eura side. They didn’t break the deadlock until the 62nd minute when Gael Tobin established a lead, but goals from Holmes and Rhys Griffiths followed shortly after.

Tzerinn 0–4 Eura
Underwood 30, Talbot 61, Townsend 69, D Sharp 84

Compared to their last attempt, Tzerinn did not showcase the same vigorous attacking intent that had almost nabbed them a result on Euran soil. Underwood's free goalscoring continued, Talbot got a rare goal from a header in off the post at a corner, and Townsend showed up the frailty of the opposition goalkeeper with a successful effort at the near post. The last goal was unfortunate to say the least - a clearance hit the back of one of the defenders and fell to substitute Sharp to score - but nobody could dispute that Eura had deserved their victory.

Eura 5–3 Revlona
Haines 27, Griffiths 39, Holmes 63, 67, Burns 76

A heavily rotated Eura team had unexpected difficulties against Revlona, who scored two good goals in the first half in response to Jon Haines and Griffiths getting Eura on their way to a big win. Luck would have it that Holmes had brought his shooting boots with him. A quickfire second half double after an anonymous first period ensured Eura would not drop points this time. Burns then scored the fifth, creating and executing the opportunity all by himself after winning possession out on the wing, drifting inside and beating two players, then dragging the ball in across the keeper on the right side of the six yard box. Revlona did score a third thanks to some lax defending but Eura had their result and ended qualifying better than it had began.

*camera flips on to reveal a shirtless tattooed man sitting next to a simple carved window-opening in a structure built from huge strips of what appears to be bamboo, overlooking the vast expanse of an alien forest far down below*

Hi guys, Romikk here.

We're getting towards the final stretch of our season at Ulsa and I still haven't seen the pitch. No surprise there - my prognosis was 8-12 months, after all - but I still believed I would return in time to score... I don't know... ten or so league goals. Turns out I'm not quite as superhuman as you probably thought, even back on my banana regimen.

I must say, though... I feel like I probably COULD play if I was allowed to. Being so close to being able to return, physically, but just *not quite* there is almost as frustrating as being so immobilized and dependent at the beginning. Ok, not really. But still. My imminent return in taunting me.

I completed the physical therapy program the doctors assigned to me back at Troutbridge. The muscles are close to fully healed, so there's not much more they can do. I can walk, sprint in a straight line and jump pretty well. I still deal with some stiffness when attempting really quick bursts of movement, like a running change of direction, but that's just a matter of building back up the strength in the muscles after being inactive for so long. And dear Odin, I need to get my cardio back in shape.

These are things I can do anywhere. It's basically just a waiting game at this point. So the Ulsa doctors are allowing me to complete the last leg of my recovery back home on Kalloroda. For my fans based in Eura, Kallo - as we locals call it - is one of Cosumar's space colonies. It's a nice planet, so they say - definitely compared to a mining colony like Varvonti - but I never cared for it. The pace of life is too slow. People are so satisfied with where they are, heads in the clouds, with little ambition for anything better or different. We live in, well, what you would call giant treehouses, for crying out loud!

"So why go back?" you're probably wondering. It's not like I have any family or friends of note back here.

*looks out the treedwelling window pensively for several moments*

You know, homecoming for footballers is usually a joyous occasion. They get to honor their hometown, their roots, the humble streets where they honed their craft as a kid. They're greeted by their families, their support teams, and an admiring public.

Here?

*Shakes head*

Sure, there was a medium-sized crowd at the spaceport to greet me and ask for autographs. It's my first time back here in ten years, after all. Kallo isn't SO insular that they don't know who I am and what I've accomplished. But once the initial crowds were gone.... there was nothing. No one who actually welcomed me. There's still an unspoken contempt for the way I left, headstrong in my desire to make more of myself than what could be offered here and iconoclastic in my distaste for the Kallorodan lifestyle.

So while it's nice to see the old sites and do my remaining fitness training back amongst the natural beauty of places like Blue Star Lake and Piander Falls, being back here on Kalloroda has reminded me why I was desperate to get offworld so young in the first place. I wanted my feet on the ground. Always felt more grounded and in-control that way than up here in the canopy's dizzying heights. I wanted to stop going with the Kalloroda flow and take risks... Take control of my own destiny and make things happen for myself! That's just who I am. During the lows of my recovery, I lost sight of that. Being back here has reminded me what drew me to football in the first place, and why I need it, for how it makes me feel.

I think... I think this homecoming brings my journey to this point full circle, so that when I return to Eura, it will be a brand new fresh start. A brand new journey to begin. A new chapter in my life - this one behind me.

I needed that.

But it also reminded me of what I needed but never had. A supporting family.

It's no secret that I'm not on speaking terms with my mother and stepfather here. They haven't even made an effort to come see me in the week since my ship touched down in Drahva. They want nothing to do with my ambition, my money, the foreign mannerisms I've picked up, or even my football. It's still a sore spot for me - sorer than my ACL ever was throughout this recovery. But throughout it all, YOU'VE been my family. The online community that has rallied around this blog and provided me daily motivation on social media. Thank you for that.

It's because of your outpouring of support that I will make it back before the end of the Euraleague season despite whatever the doctors may project.

*Stands up and starts sprinting in place while munching a local snail delicacy*

Three Days before Drawkland/Valladares Leg 2
Metropolon, Drawkland
The Pinnapex

Michael Starre's office was something rather small. Most of DISC's offices were located in The Pinnapex, the enormous skyscraper in the center of Metropolon that was the tallest in all of Sonnel. Offices, hotels, stores, basically an entire city was contained in this enormous building. DISC's offices were no exception, and thus neither was Michael's. He used this office during the DLK season as well, considering how he managed the Metropolon Lights in the domestic season.

In his mind, though, nothing beats the country home he owned in Centivar County. The city life can be dazzling and beautiful, but he preferred the quiet peace of nature. This is where he found serenity. He always thought it helped him in important matches to make the right decisions ... he could just simply imagine the quiet countryside on a foggy morning and instantly the crowd was silent, and he could focus on what matters most - the players in the match.

The players were always on his mind. It wasn't him that controlled the match's result, it was the players. All he could do is figure the best combination to put in and pray he was right. That's why he called Kaitlyn Axelson into his office that evening.

The door to his office creaked open. The sun was starting to sink in the sky, bathing the room in direct sunlight. Kaitlyn walked into the room and squinted. She didn't expect the brightness of the light hitting her face. Michael hadn't noticed, since he faced the opposite direction.

"You wanted to see me, Michael?" the young player said as she made her way to a seat on the other side of the desk.

"Yes, ah, sorry about the sunlight. Didn't realize it was that late already," Michael quickly apologized, and spun a dial on the windowpane which automatically made it tint darker. The sunlight instantly diminished, and the electric light turned on slightly to keep the light level in the room similar, if less annoying.

"Not a problem now, thanks," Kaitlyn replied, shifting awkwardly in her seat and looking across the desk at her manager.

"So ..." Michael began, leaning back in his seat and making eye contact with Kaitlyn, "I'm sure you know why I've called you in here today. I mean, you could probably guess, right?"

"Well, I- uh, I assumed it would be about the Corps, the coming match maybe?" she said, breaking eye contact and finding something on the wall to look at instead. She rubbed the back of her neck in a slight nervous tick.

"I'm at a dilemma here. I've pretty much decided the lineup for this final leg, but there's still the one position I can't decide yet. I'm sure you know what I mean. The center mid position," he began. He paused for a second, as if to wait if she would say something. After an awkward beat of silence, he continued, "On one hand, I have you-know-who, who for obvious reasons is the clear choice. You'd think. There's a whole lot of dynamics in play here, and I'm not too sure if I should put her in. Because, and this is the more important thing at play, there's the obvious decision on if I should put you in instead. After all, you played this entire cycle. You've built up this chemistry with the starting lineup, and I know you've been wanting to be the main player in the center position ever since we invited you onto the national team. So I've decided to let you decide instead. After all, you're the person who will be affected by this the most."

Kaitlyn shifted in her seat again and finally made eye contact back with the manager. She took a breath as if to say something, then held it to think a moment longer. Finally, she spoke up.

"Well, I appreciate this, but I'm not sure I want to be responsible for if something, y'know, doesn't go as planned, or, uh," she stammered.

"Don't worry about that. No matter what happens, I'll be counting this as my decision. You don't have to worry about the media, or whatever happens at the match, or about me judging your decision. I'm judgement-free. I want to know what you think," Michael tried to assure her.

"It just, just feels weird to say it," Kaitlyn replied noncommittally.

"You can say it," Michael said flatly, "I just want to know how you feel."

Kaitlyn sat still for a moment, still avoiding meeting the gaze of Starre. A hard moment later, she responded, "Okay then. I- I don't ... don't want to play the match."

Michael raised his eyebrows. From the way she was talking, he assumed she was afraid to speak out against Ellzidan. He quickly suppressed his short look of surprise, and sat back up in his chair, "Are you sure? The work you've put in this cycle has not gone unnoticed by me! You deserve the spot by all means."

"It's not that, it's not that," she asserted, her voice starting to quiver less, "I just don't think I can do it. I don't know how to say it right, it's just that I don't know, if the game comes down to that clutch moment, if I'd be able to deliver. I don't think I can handle that pressure yet. I'm- I'm sorry."

"Don't be," Michael said, giving her a reassuring look, "I know all about how that can feel. I'll put Ellzidan in then. You won't have to worry about it at all. The pressure is off."

"Okay. Okay. Thank you. Thank you so much Michael," Kaitlyn gushed all of a sudden, "You don't know how much this relieves me. I promise I'll make it up to you someday."

"Just go home and relax a bit. I'll see you in a couple days for the day-before warmups."

"Thanks again, yeah, I'll be there. See you later," Kaitlyn said, getting out of her seat and closing the door behind her. Michael leaned back in his chair again, and spun around to look at the darkening Metropolon sky. He blew a breath out loud. That wasn't what he expected, but he wasn't complaining. He wanted to put the Elf to the test once more.

76 minute mark, Drawkland/Valladares Leg 2
Drawk City, Drawkland
Corps Central Pitch

The crowd exploded into gasps, then a moment of hushed silence, before erupting into a chorus of boos. Andy Navarro of Valladares had just scored their 3rd goal of the match, making it a 1-3 game for Valladares. Michael Starre threw his hands in the air in exasperation before squatting and looking down at the ground. His mind went furiously.

Pinto and Arango had scored the opening two goals of the match, in the 21st and 31st minutes. Luckily, Stella Moore came in with a goal towards the end of the half which tied the series 5-5 on aggregate, and as Drawkland had the away goals advantage in hand, it was simply a matter of waiting out the match. This goal changed all that.

After the goal was scored, Michael quickly brought the players in for a huddle.

"Now is not the time to panic. We still have this game under our control, we just need to go out and execute, alright? All of you, go out and do what needs to be done. Your fate lies in your hands, nobody else's. Do it for Drawkland."

The players solemnly nodded then trotted back onto the pitch to finish the match. There was likely a short 15 minutes left in the game.

84 minute mark
Drawk City, Drawkland
DNSN Radio Broadcast

Jack Stokeland leaned forward in his chair, looking out at the pitch from his pressbox at midfield. Next to him, his color commentator Hal Matthews similarly craned his neck to focus on the far side of the field. Jack cleared his throat before bringing the microphone back down to his mouth. They had just gone to a quick advert while the action had stopped for the throw-in.

"Welcome back to DNSN radio coverage of the World Cup Qualifiers. I'm Jack Stokeland alongside Hal Matthews. Drawkland's Kick Corps has the possession, after a slide tackle by La Nacional's Delgado resulted in the ball flying out of bounds. The referee has recently called for 3 minutes of extra time, as we are now approaching the 85th minute. Drawkland desperately needs a goal here in these waning minutes if they want to qualify for the fourth consecutive time.

"The ball is in play once more, given to Sarah Arrowsword out around the midfield circle. The crowd is certainly into it right now. Arrowsword passes across to Warren. La Nacional is trying to park the bus now, and rightfully so. Their defense is packed heavily around the box. Warren passes it closer in to Mandy Thompson. Thompson is manned up, shoots it across the pitch to a waiting Ellzidan. Ellzidan knocks it out to Talla on the other edge. Talla makes a move towards the box. She passes it in to Archer, Archer shoots! No good, deflected by the keeper Armand.

"The ball is staying in bounds, Cam Cross has gone out to the corner to retrieve it. She's being chased by two defenders, trying to trap her in the corner."

"That ball is going right into the corner, Cam is going to get trapped for sure," Hal interjected for a moment.

"Cam has the ball now, but she's under heavy duress. Crowd is loud here, it must be impossible to hear anything down there. She's stuck, trying to get the ball away ... there it goes! She manages to boot it out towards the back half. Looks like Cynthia Pack is there to get it. She shoots it across the pitch, low and quick, over to Stella Moore. Valladares almost gets a defenders' foot on it but Moore gets it safely. She's driving towards the goal, lots of speed, momentum, a shot! Blocked again by Armand!

"This one goes out the back line. Drawkland's getting a corner kick. It's now the 87th minute. They need to score ASAP."

The crowd outside began chanting. "Just. One Goal. Just. One. Goal. Just. One. Goal ..." it went on and on as the players set up for the corner.

"Looks like they're ready to go now. Katie Madison is going to take the kick, here now. It's high, arcing towards the box, here's the crush of players jumping to meet it ....... ELLZIDAN!" Jack suddenly stood up from his seat as the crowd exploded into wild cheers.

"OH MY GOD!" Hal exclaimed as he stood up as well.

"GOOOOOOAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLL!" they both exclaimed in unison, lasting for about 20 seconds.

"The Elf scores with a header! What an amazing kick by Madison to set that up! Drawkland has tied the series again at 6!"

"6 minutes and counting to qualification!"

90+3' Drawkland/Valladares Leg 2
Drawk City, Drawkland
Corps Central Pitch

La Nacional tried their hardest, but ultimately the Drawkian defense showed out and ended any chances of a finishing goal. Rebecca Talla managed to run at and intercept a crossing pass just outside the box and booted it to the other side of the field. The referee's whistle blew as the ball passed the midfield mark, and the crowd, which was still cheering and chanting after the goal was scored 6 minutes earlier, started jumping and rocking around. The Kick Corps, on the field and from the bench, all ran towards the center of the field and mobbed each other.

Drawkland was heading to the World Cup once again.

A few weeks later

With much jubilation at qualifying once again after a shaky cycle, Drawkian Kick Corps fans were up in arms and ready to try to finally make the playoffs in the World Cup once again. It wouldn't be easy. Drawkland's group wasn't looking to be a cakewalk at all. Buyan was a formidable opponent on the first matchday. Of course the next matchday they'd have to face the far-and-away number 1 team in the multiverse, Schottia. And to top it all off, their final group stage match would be against Electrum, who beat Drawkland 1-4 at home during the qualifying group stage. That's not even mentioning the fact that they also beat Drawkland 3-1 away, and that Starblaydia would be a neutral venue where Drawkland would be facing the #10 team.

In a word, Drawkland is going to be challenged. Hopes still remain high, but in any case, Drawkland needed to have the strongest lineup of players out there. Maybe not the most legendary or veteran presences, but the ones who would perform. The ones who could win.

The Kick Corps will not be beat down again.

Jungle Cats drawn to Group E in Equestrian States

Grand Regal Stadium, Canterlot, Equestrian States :: With the teams chosen and the venues set it was time for the Vilitan National Team to head off and contest the World Cup Finals. To say things hadn't gone well for the Jungle Cats during World Cup 79 would be a massive understatement. A pair of defeats to secondary nations sent the #3 team in the World crashing out at the very first hurdle. Now with a new coaching staff and some new players, they were ready to make amends.

The first step along that journey would be the Group Draw. Ironically, the World Cup 80 Group Draw would be sponsored by... no... "powered by" a Vilitan based company, Arcticala Electrical, giving a homely feel to the draw environment.
Image

The draw itself was hosted by Starblaydia's Tororin Halatyrion and the Equestrian States' Princess Cadance. It was attended by representatives from Participating teams throughout the multiverse and the Vilitan representative was Nikki Kater of 'Garbage Time' fame. Other notable attendees included Richard Hawkins from South Covello who was seen hanging out with Cocoabo #23, the Turorian Grand Prix driver; Less notable attendees included Sierra Yoshihiro of Damukuni, Adama Sowe of Banija, Don Mizzet of Mriin and August Toset of Juvencus. Zachary Sedsten of Qasden also snuck into the event despite the fact that Qasden failed to qualify for the 80th World Cup and would instead be back in Turori contesting the Cup of Harmony. Each of the attendees received a goodie bag from Arcticala Electrical with the Arcticala Inlet Lightning Bolt logo on the outside, and which included inside a set of commemorative sunglasses, a portable power back with a solar panel and fold-out wind catcher to ensure, two wireless power outlets and a small rock which the representatives were each challenged to work together and determine its function.

The draw started from the bottom and worked its way up as is tradition drawing the Pot 4 teams before those from Pot 3 and Pot 2. The real excitement was bound to come when it came time to draw the Pot 1 teams and it became clear the shape each group would take.

Of course, right when the #1 ball was pulled out of the Arcticala Electrical draw ball randomiser machine, there was a disruption as Alina Krasnikova of Chromatika burst into the room shouting "I'm Here! I'm Here!" as everyone in the room, distracted, turned and stared. Finally it was the over-friendly Yoshihiro of Damukuni who advised Krasnikova that the draw was nearly done and they should probably just sit down and wait for the recap. Krasnikova was, however, just in time to see their own ball drawn into Group F - right after it was re-validated that the Vilitan National Team would be in a group with New Gazi, Banija and the hosts Equestrian States, much to the delight of the attending Nikki Kater.

Once the draw was complete the teams from each group had their balls inserted back into the Arcticala Inlet draw ball randomizer and assigned fixture orders. For the Jungle Cats the result was a meeting with New Gazi at the Grand Regal Stadium in Canterlot, home of the Canterlot Royals.

In fact, the way the draw worked out, the Jungle Cats were going to be able to make camp in Canterlot as they would play Banija on Matchday 2 in the same stadium before a Matchday 3 clash with the hosts just across town at the Star Stadium.

The Jungle Cats had no history with New Gazi and the Matchday 1 clash between the two sides was believed to be their first ever meeting at the World Cup. It was a fairly nervy match to begin with the unfamiliar teams dedicated to feeling each other out before formulating a plan of attack and acting upon it.

Vilita finally got on the scoresheet just minutes from the break through Rammsissil midfielder Jurzen Devmiko. While Devmiko's celebration of the goal was a simple motion of pumping his fist in the air, one of the Vilitan players decided it would be best to celebrate by running towards the small section of travelling fans and sticking out a tongue combined with other actions, arguably making gestures with fingers - whether it was to tell the fans that the Jungle Cats were #1 - which was not technically true as the Jungle Cats were ranked 13th in the World going into the match, or something else, either way the result was instant chaos on the pitch. The New Gazi players objected to the Vilitan behavior. The Vilitans objected to the New Gazi's objections. Very soon things had boiled over to the point where every player in Jungle Teal and Coral objected to the very presence of every player in Blue and Red, and vice versa.

All four referees had to converge to break up the incident. In an effort to move things along and get the teams back into their locker rooms, Darmeni Referee Bob decided it was time to blow for half time. His assistants ushured the players toward the tunnel and Bob stood at the entry to the tunnel holding up the yellow card to each and every player that passed him, setting the tone that behavior of that sort would not be tolerated for the remainder of the match. As no player had yet been booked in the match, no player was sent off but the Jungle Cat coaching staff did utilize all three of their substitutions at the half, perhaps hedging their bets against more second half yellows.

Entering the match for Vilita was forward Tenziki Kulakao and midfielders Karisto Monafog and Purapal Eskiiy.

The remainder of the match played out an exciting affair and there were no more dramatics of the hostile variety as were seen at the end of the first half. Vilita ultimately won the match as the Man of the Match Jurzen Devmiko completed the best game of their career on the big stage with a second goal to secure three points for Vilita and the best possible start to their World Cup 80 finals.

Toys '4' All Unveil 'Equestar 80' line of Toys

Image
Toys '4' All Regional Distribution Facility, Lopinka, Vilita :: Toys '4' All, The leading designer, distributor and retailer of Toys and Games in the Tropics has recently unveiled the first series in their new line of toys to represent the National Teams and Mascots of those nations participating in the World Cup 80 Finals in Starblaydia and the Equestrian States.

The release wasn't without some controversy, however, as the nation of Audioslavia was included in the first Series release, even though the nation Audioslavia is not one of the National Teams competing in the EqueStar 80 World Cup. When asked to comment, a Toys '4' All representative indicated that the inclusion of Audioslavia's "Bully" Mascot in the new Toy line was intended as a show of respect to all the great accomplishments of the Audioslavia teams of the past including a record 9 appearances in the World Cup Final, and the line wasn't necessarily meant to be exclusive for the 32 qualified nations. Press releases that accompanied the lines initial release and the wording on the toy boxes themselves would seem to contradict this position, however, with others believing that Toys '4' All simply made an assumption that later proved inaccurate that Audioslavia would be one of the 32 participating nations at the World Cup.

When pressed on the issue, the Toys '4' All representative, perhaps in a nod to the fact that the Audioslavia National Team is currently contesting the Cup of Harmony in Vilita, made a quipped reponse declaring that the "Audioslavia Bully toys are one of our top sellers in Lopinka right now!". The representative also confirmed that the Bully toy, in fact, has no visible testacles.

The EqueStar toy line is based on Toys '4' All's recent release of toys produced in support of the Tivaliwood Motion Pictures films Cove Wars and Banda: A Cove Wars Story, using the same production facility in Lopinka and distributed in similar but re-themed packaging. Each toy is considered to have a level 3 on the Squishiness scale, with the child user expected to experience something between that of a traditional plush toy and a more rigid polyplastic figurine.

Toys '4' All prides itself in providing a positive experience for children and adults alike when visiting its stores. Customers enjoy a wide selection of otherwise hard-to-find Toys and Games with Toys '4' All bringing to market toys from independent toy makers and innovators. The future of the Toys '4' All brand likely depends on being able to retain the market share from the independent toy makers using Toys '4' All as a storefront for their goods.

Just before the first match of the 80th world cup

Fifteen minutes before the match. The whole team was pretty much ready to go out there and play football. They were all dressed up in their sports gear, sitting down and chatting amongst themselves, waiting for the manager to emerge to give the traditional pre-match pep talk. Nerves were high in the dressing room, as it was a big occasion. While many of these players had been in this situation before, at a world cup ready to play against some top quality opponents, they hadn't been in this situation before as such. They hadn't been a part of a team which had the potential to make it out the world cup groups and into the round of 16.

There was the team that achieved that in Ethane's second endeavour into the world cup, but they were considered underdogs. That was a surprise achievement which no one saw coming. And they were easily defeated after that. However, the Red Kites today find themselves as the third-ranked team in the group, but with the second-ranked team ranked barely ahead of them. There was almost this atmosphere of expectancy around the Ethanian camp; this was the Red Kite's world cup to shine in.

There, of course, is the issue that the team ranked second in the group is Turori. They did have a fairly dismal qualifying run and had to sneak into the world cup through the playoffs. They faced a number of losses against unranked or low-ranked teams in the group, and almost missed out on even a qualifying position. However, there was 1 team which they consistently beat without fail throughout the qualifiers. Ethane. Us. We could never beat them. So hopefully, the lesson from the qualifiers is learnt because 3 defeats from the same team in the same cycle would be brutal.

Declan turned his head to his left. Next to him sat Lukas Cole, one of the other younger strikers who he would undoubtedly be fighting against for position. To his right was one of his best friends on the team; Leyton Underwood. Somewhere along the line while in training, the younger Declan had taken a liking to Underwood and they had developed a mutual bond of friendship between themselves. When they feel down or weak, they go to each other because that's who they feel comfortable with. They confide in each other their fears, their worries, and their problems. It's a good a friend as you can get really. That's why they typically sat next to each other while preparing for matches, as they gave each other confidence, despite the players being supposed to sit with other players from their position.

'Hey Ley. Do you think we actually have a chance to go deep in this world cup?' Declan asked Leyton, clearly hopeful that this would be the year in which the Red Kites would finally make it as an internationally recognised powerhouse in football. Leyton turned his head to Declan.

'Yeah, I reckon we have a chance.' he answered, less enthusiastically than he was asked the question though. 'But it'll be tough. We all know that.' He turned his head back again, scanning the team in the locker room.

'But like, with Turori, do you think we'll actually be able to beat them this time?'

''If we keep on doing what we're doing in attack and in defence, and we keep our mind in the game and learn from our mistakes, then for sure. We can do it.'' At that moment, the manager burst in through the doors of the locker room clearly focused on the game at hand. He had that facial expression which said I'm determined to do this. Time to play.

''Hello lads!'' he greeted cheerily. ''Good to see you all. I'm just coming in here to wish you luck.'' he scanned the room, smiling at all the players in the room.

''Enough with the welcome. Guys, this game against Juvencus, it is crucial. This is a must-win game in my eyes. While it isn't a must-win as in if we lose this we're eliminated, this is the easiest game in the group for us. And I don't mean easy as in easy, because it's not an easy game. It'll be a hard, challenging game of football. But that's what the world cup's about, isn't it?' Murmurs of approval spread across the room.

''If we don't win this game, you can basically kiss further progression in this world cup goodbye!' he shouted and then whispered 'and probably my job' under his breath. In the views of the governing board in Ethane, merely reaching the world cup wasn't really enough anymore. They'd done that enough times. And Comi knew that.

''So I want you to go out there and do your best guys and win this match. We can do this. We just need to believe, and continue what we've been doing. We've done well so far, let's continue the performances from the qualifiers.'

A diplomatic message was sent to the Foreign Ministry of the Equestrian States in Canterlot from Belle Haven:

To the Foreign Minister of Equestria,

Please convey my respects to HRH Princess Celestia on behalf of our government. It is our policy that we will stand by your nation, and any others who oppose the current Katikirro of Banija. We have committed ourselves to providing aid to drought stricken regions of the country, including the Busoga Islands.

I would like to ask permission that you receive an emissary from the Commonwealth at your earliest convenience to discuss way forward, and to appraise your government of sensitive information that should be only shared at the highest levels. I believe our Football Association has made arrangements to travel to your country for a match against your National Team ahead of the World Cup Finals. This would provide an excellent opportunity to quietly meet in regards to the issues I mentioned above.

Please do not hesitate to call upon our country for any assistance you may require.

Yours respectfully,

Rebecca Schoenlien
Prime Minister of Baker Park

Meanwhile, there had been a change in the entire tone of the situation off Banija; the Banijans had issued a Declaration of War against the Equestrian States and Fleet Command were preparing to swap out 'B' Squadron for the much more heavily armed 'A' Squadron of the group. Marie O'Brien was not particularly pleased by this news, as she felt she had unfinished business on this mission.
She had not gotten any real sense of cooperative spirit from her visit to the Equestrian Royal Navy's ship, and she wondered if they had some question as to the capability of the NSC.

Set the Fires
Starblaydia Smash Abanhfleft in Opener

"Honour and Glory, Foundation Road,
Were once we watched Di Bradini play (and could he play!),
Thanh Madray on the wing,
We had dreams, and songs to sing,
Of the glory that you earn at Foundation Road."

"Foundation Road"
Iskara Daii Fan chant
In the opening match of the eightieth World Cup, Starblaydia set out their stall for a Cup run, set the tone for the tournament to come, and set the fire for a swashbuckling, rip-roaring, adventurous ninety minutes at Foundation Road, the home of Starblaydia's most successful club. Iskara Daii FC has a strange reputation as managing to have the core of a midtown working man's club, with a cadre of glory supporters and a mob of fashionable hipster hangers on all claiming the club as their own. Thus, when the national team comes to stay and the majority of fans in the ground are Daii supporters, there's an intriguing balance between the corporate box entertainment-enjoying Avocado Toast Brigade and the lung-bursting passion of the men and women in the home end. Both came out to attend in full force to fill the 75,000 seater stadium, along with the gaggle of Fleftic fans on tour, in a right of red, green, orange, white and blue. Combined with the Starblaydi white and purple and the assortment of flags and shirts from fans around the multiverse who picked up tickets to whatever match they could, it ended up being a chaotic riot of colour at the Foundation, matched by both the noise and the performance of both teams on the pitch.

Starblaydia's captain, Pawel Zapotowski, won the toss and elected to kick-off. When Starblaydia started, oh did they ever start, coming out the blocks like a rocket, dazzling the Fleftic players with their speed, aggression and desire. The opening few minutes were crisp, fast, direct stuff as Starblaydia hit the ground running and overwhelmed the 3-4-3 of Abanhfleft with almost immediate results. Garkadrum brought it down the right-hand side, over the halfway line, and performed a neat little one-two with Caballero to evade Bella Maynard. Onwards he went at a sprint, squaring the ball for Marcello Di Bradini. The number Seven with the famous surname immediately turned it out wide the other wide to Mezna Rayyen, who burst into the box. She fired a stinging shot at Carter in the Fleftic net, who could only parry it out, straight into the path of the onrushing Ella Kabeya, who blasted it into the net. Four minutes played of the World Cup; Starblaydia in dreamland.

"Kabeya don't mess around,
When she's in front of goal,
And this I know for sure,
Kabey Ya! Kabey Ya!
Kabey Ya! Kabey Ya!

"Kabey Ya!"
Starblaydi Fan chant
Almost immediately the Daii and Starblaydia chants started up. In quick succession we heard "Kabey Ya!", the always-ironic "There's only one Di Bradini", "Away in Krytenia", and the home favourite 'Foundation Road' got the loudest chorus in. They were mid-way through a fourth rendition of the Daii faithful's classic when Di Bradini again played a great ball down the left, releasing Rayyen once again. This time the Vic's forward breezed past Osgood, took a shallower angle towards goal and cut inside Jackson onto her weaker weaker foot. It didn't hinder her at all, though, as she sent a curling shot from the edge of the box past the outstreched fingertips of Carter and billowing the back of the net as Starblaydia raced into a 2-0 lead. These are the sorts of games you want in the World Cup, the passionate, joyful ones where the cameras capture every emotion in the crispest of detail. The stadium was bouncing as Starblaydi fans urged their heroes on, and the Fleftic players desperately tried to get their foot on the ball and back into contention. They'd have to wait a bit longer, though, as Starblaydia made it four in the first half with another pair of quick goals.

First it was Soronúmë getting in on the action, on the end of a flowing move that cut the Fleftic team open with a series of incisive passes that drove Starblaydi forward into free space, Caballero providing the pass within the box that the Elven winger latched onto before rifling a ball into the roof of the net at the near post. Then came Kabeya's second strike, just before half time, her thirtieth goal for her country in sixty internationals. This tally surely would have come much quicker, perhaps even hitting her fortieth, that Starblaydia taken part in the Qualifying Campaign, but in the long run Kabeya won't care too much about scoring records, when she can look back and see that she scored these goals, in this place, at this Cup. From a corner, Syku Ryku won the header amongst a sea of bodies, and though Carter managed to block it with her leg, Kabeya was there to stick out a boot ahead of her defenders and poke the ball home from close range. Four-nil in 45 minutes and you could have awarded the Cup to Starblaydia right then and there and they couldn't have cheered or sung any louder.

Foundation Road was rocking as the teams went off for the end of the half, and it couldn't possibly continue in the same vein for Starblaydia in the second half, could it? Well, no. Abanhfleft came out for the second half with a determination and will that Starblaydia failed to match. The Fleftics were led from the front by Chelsea Stuart who seemed to be at the heart of everything creative, forcing Ortega into several last-ditch tackles and drawing a yellow card foul from Esposito while out wide on the left. All of a sudden Starblaydia stopped getting a hold of the ball, stopped being able to find the pass forward, and a wave of red shirts was beginning to envelop them. That came to fruition when Allison Torres scrambled the ball home after a block by Ryku had to be followed up by a save from Järvinen, but it was third time lucky for 'Sonny' who bundled the ball in at the back post to bring hope to a Fleftic side who were making their mark on the game while there was still time for a comeback.

Then Ortega was adjudged to have handballed a Zsofia Dolan cross in the area, and Stuart smashed home the penalty without even a hint of nerves, Abanhfleft were focused and steely-eyed, and Starblaydia had seemingly forgotten how to get a grip on the ball. It happened again, Chelsea Stuart striking from twelve yards out from the left side of the goal, clipping the ball forward and in off the side of the post past the despairing hand of Bjorn Järvinen, this time Garkadrum to blame for not picking Stuart up as she drifted over to his side away from Ryku and into free space. Starblaydi fans had their heads in their hands, a stadium silenced by three goal in ten minutes from a Fleftic side who were refusing to be beaten. Barely a single Starblaydi was able to rise to this challenge, the comeback was well and truly on, one or two more goals looked well within Abanhfleft's reach until one man, according to the twii.tur memes, simply said:

lol nope

Marcello Di Bradini stepped up to take a free kick, mid-way inside the Abanhfleft half. Ázëwyn Fëanáro and Jerzy Makuszewski were screaming at their players to settle down, put their foot on the ball, get a grip on the game and control it, see it out. But Marcello Di Bradini wasn't listening to any of that. Cool as a summer's breeze, directing the forwards with the laziest of traffic control signals, he planted his right foot and put his left cleanly through the ball. It sailed forward with a deceptive arc, slowly beginning to dip and bend to the right. But Victoria Carter had already committed to her right, and the ball was not losing any of its speed mid-flight. Carter scuttled to her left and dived for it, but the ball was beyond her reach. From just under forty yards, Marcello Di Bradini had scored an absolute screamer of a free kick. Foundation road erupted, and there were less than five minutes left.

As Abanhfleft streamed forward, desperate for the two goals they knew were possible to score, Zapotowski won the ball with a crunching challenge and Di Bradini instinctively passed it down the pitch. Rayyen broke down the left hand side for the final time, into space, crossing low with her tired legs. Hometown favourite, on as substitute, Luciano Da Cunha, halted his run to collect the ball and played it first time through for Ella Kabeya, who took one swipe at the ball and wheeled away in celebration.

Six-Three.

Hat-trick.

Game over.

We go again.

Final Score from Foundation Road:
Starblaydia 6 - 3 Abanhfleft
(Kayeba 5', 43' & 88', Rayyen 9', Soronúmë 38, Di Bradini 86') - (Torres 72', Stuart 78' (pen) & 81)

Starblaydia stick around at Foundation Road and face what, on paper, is the easiest of their three group games as they walk about against the Free Republics. They're another attacking side, again with a modified 3-4-3 formation like Abanhfleft, and are presently ranked some 19 places below Starblaydia in the KPB pecking order - remember that Abanhfleft were only 4 places lower than Starblaydia in the rankings, a much more even contest that produced the 6-3 scoreline.

The Republican corporate team made their way into the Qualification playoffs with a big win on the final day, stretching the goal difference lead they over Aggrey-Fynn Land to three full points to seal third place in Group 8, which former World Champions Electrum topped, over Drawkland. The Free Republics, in the lower half of the draw, faced down and defeated Apox - a team who on paper have but the slightest edge over the Republicans - with a win at home, and a nail-biting 5-4 loss in Apox, one that still meant they won on aggregate.

Matchday Two's game is just one match, however, and can Starblaydia's counterattack once again nullify the forward-minded instincts of an attacking side who are willing to have a go at one of the hosts? It's an incredibly young side, with every single one of them younger than the youngest Starblaydi squad member, even taking into account that this is the youngest Starblaydi squad in a generation. Will it be teenage dreams or teenage angst when Starblaydia host Free Republics on Matchday Two?

OOC - I love Star's Fluffy Bunny! But I'll have to wait until MD 2 before RP'ing my IC reaction, because I've been working on this next RP for a while, hoping to use it in the finals, and it needs a match where one of the scores is a '2' - so I have to use it when I know I have the opportunity...

THE TALE OF MUFFIN AND THE TRICKY DINNER ORDER

In Jhanna we had won 1-2
And Snuggles scored goals one and two
So Muffin sat in Café Moo -
A local place with fine menu

“It’s time” he said “to try some food
That isn’t pureed carrot gruel
I wish to try something brand new…
I wish to dine on human stew!”

The waiter, Archibald McHugh,
The owner of the Café Moo
(And expert player of kazoos)
He waved around his new corkscrew

“Alas, Sir Bunny, this is the truth
This dish is not one that we do
Perhaps you’d like our fine beef stew
Or maybe tasty lamb ragout?”

“Oh me, oh my; what a to-do
I do not know what I should do.
I do not want your fine beef stew
I do not want the lamb ragout

The beef smells like some week-old glue
The lamb is tougher than my shoe
It is to tough for me to chew
I simply want the human stew.

Please cook the human meat right through
Or throw it on a barbecue
Or even into a fondue
So long as I can have the stew!”

The waiter huffed and puffed and blew
He also knew not what to do
He knew they served no human stew
And this he now had cause to rue

“Sir Bunny” said our friend McHugh
"I want to serve you human stew
This is something I’ll look into
Please do not cause a ballyhoo”

And in the kitchen A. McHugh
Cut up a spare dead kangaroo
And turned it into tasty stew
Served in a bowl of palest blue.

“Sir Bunny, I have cooked this stew
And served it specially for you
The human’s name was Mo Nehru;
Before he died he was Hindu”

And Muffin slurped his way right through
He purred and smiled and smacked and cooed
He did not know the human stew
Was really sliced up kangaroo!

So hurrah for Archibald McHugh
Who let out an almighty ‘phew’
When Muffin paid the cash now due
And happily waved “Goodbye! Adieu!”

THE END

Before the match against Ethane, the Juven FA requested for people aged 5-35 to write poems after the game, in regards to how it went, or how they feel the squad should change. Most poems were pretty standard... written by the youth.

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Ethane scored 3
We only scored 2

Bernardo Riquelme, 12 years old

Our frontline is good
Their frontline is better
Their backline sucks
But ours could have done better

Gianmarco Làconi, 17 years old

Others... well, not so much.

Toset out
Toss him the fuck out
Tafani can't be always there
To bail his ass out

Zappa tried enough
The defence couldn't bring it up
Ethane just screwed us up
Cause Madeiros couldn't run fast enough

Anonymous, 27 years old

I won't use foul mouth in this one
But Tushlark goalie couldn't keep up
Madeiros be eatin' ravioli
Red kites goin' through him like a dummy

Vespasien Rey, 18 years old

And others didn't get the point, as they didn't write poems at all and instead just made short rants.

We are supposed to be the damn agressors boys, I caaaaaaaan't even understand how we call ourselves gli attaccanti when we are missing half our chances and we barely even pressure forward. Way to go, Cup of Harmony champs. Tafani couldn't carry you on her shoulders enough, huh? How about the stupid Madeiros lad, he's supposed to be our captain...(Character limit reached, paper couldn't hold this lad's massive letters, we are to keep him anonymous until further notice.)

Shut down for the majority of the match, Pristina Shine puts a dagger in Banijan hearts as Kadongo Kamu fall on Matchday 1

Image
Banijan players on the sideline after the match is over

CANTERLOT, EQUESTRIAN STATES- The national team, of course, played in the opening match of World Cup 80. A witness to the opening ceremonies live- the Kadongo Kamu, of course, watching and clapping in awe, with their spattering of fans throughout and the Equestrians filling every seat and then some, with well over 100,000 people in attendance at the opening match of World Cup 80. A ton of energy from the Equestrian fans and players, here to witness the Equestrian States, once more, hosting the greatest competition in all of sport- the World Cup Finals. The energy was electric in the air, and you could tell that you were going to witness something special, and that, indeed, did certainly happen.

After watching the ceremony, everyone came out to what they were here to see- the opening game of World Cup 80. With a ton of energy, and flashing cameras everywhere, the ball was tapped from Pristina Shine back to Cloudchaser, and the 80th World Cup Finals were officially underway. They were knocking the ball around the back, of course, with the crowd roaring for the Equestrians to score. The Banijans are not a popular team in the Equestrian States right now- even if the underdog story is a nice one to follow, the fact that the two nations are essentially trading blows in the open seas, around the Busoga Islands, does not make them popular. The Banijan-Equestrian community, which made a good portion of the fans in the arena, rolled out a banner at the stadium that said "MUTEBI MUST GO", that was applauded by the entire stadium when it was flashed on the big boards at the stadium.

Regardless, of course, we had a match to play, and what a match it was going to be indeed. Even though the Equestrian States are known for starting slow, that was not going to be true in this game. The Equestrians were never going to start slow in this one- indeed, it was nerves, the pressure of opening a World Cup on home soil, the pressure of expectation, that would cause them to open a little too fast, one might say. In the 8th minute, Krystal blasting a shot from the 18 to about the 25th row in the stands, she was so excited. The young pony, Apple Cobbler, did the same thing, but this time a one-timer inside the box. There was certainly a lot of energy, but maybe too much energy. Passes were too strong, crosses were being skied, and the Banijans were weathering the early storm.

Early on, it was evident exactly what strategy the Banijans were going to try and pull off against the Equestrian States. Their goal was to shut down their opponent's offense, by shutting down their star striker- Pristina Shine. How were they going to be able pulling off shutting down the Equestrian star strker, when so many others had not only tried, but failed miserably in their attempt to even slow her down, even a little? The difference, the key here, was Marcus Waters own knowledge about how the team worked. As a native of the Equestrian States, he's essentially seen it all- he knows how the country operates, he has much less of a learning curve when he scouts this team.

He pulled a version of what is known in basketball as the Jordan rules, that would apply to Pristina Shine. Pristina Shine is a unicorn, and unicorns are known for being some of the least physical players out there. She has the talent and skill, the thoughtfulness, to beat almost anybody. However, she is not going to overpower you. It was clear what Marcus Waters strategy was from the beginning. It's a little tough in this sport to do something like that, because, of course, two bad fouls and all of a sudden, you are short a player. You have to be physical, but careful, and the Banijans, though it looked like they were targetting her, were able to walk that tightrope.

It started with Wasa Jawo, and it would rotate between the six people in the back- the back four, plus Georgiadis and Asres in the center of midfield. The strategy was simple- every time she got the ball, she would be hit. Would she hit the ground every time? Well, it's not easy to knock down a full grown unicorn, but, of course, she certainly wasn't used to a strategy like this. Wasa Jawo got his own licks in, with shoves and slide tackles. Zinnah Atieno got his own in, getting a yellow card in the 15th minute for essentially running her over when she received the ball with her back to him. You could tell that this was taking its wear and tear on her.

Everytime she received the ball- she would expect contact. It was a lot for any player to take, and Marcus Waters will surely face some criticism in the international press for the strategy deployed to stop Pristina Shine. But what else do you expect him to do? She's the best player on the field, and they need to do what they can to stop her. That is how the Banijan national team finished with 7 yellow cards, and yet surprisingly, 0 reds- Wasa Jawo, Abate Brehanu, Zinnah Atieno, Alifa Diawara, Isaac Georgiadis, Daniel Asres, and Toyuwa Okafor all got yellow cards. All of those players, besides Okafor, got a yellow card in the process of making a physical challenge on Pristina Shine when she had the ball.

In the 42nd minute, however, the Equestrian States used some of their other players to beat them. Moreover, the second of their three superstars, Rainbow Blitz. The Banijans wanted to give up few corner kicks to their opponents, and this was the first one, and the only one, they gave up during the game. However, it was deadly. Luminesce delivered a perfect ball to Rosewing, on the near post. She flicked the ball on with her head to the far post, where Rosewing headed it into the back of the net. The tournament's first goal was scored by Rainbow Blitz, whose header made the score 1-0 just before halftime.

They went into the break, and coming out of the break, the Banijans looked determined. They had largely been able to implement their strategy- focus aggressively on Pristina Shine, take her out of the game, and see the Equestrian attack suffer as a result, as it runs through Pristina Shine. However, they were still down 1-0. They needed to take the game to their opponents, and they would do just that. Elijah Riga coming on at the 45 minute mark for Daniel Asres gave the team some fresh legs, something they'd need desperately if they were going to be able to keep up with the Equestrians for the remainder of the match.

Banija started to assert themselves into the match at this point. A counter attack that saw Gentle Breeze make a world-class save on Kiggwe Mavuto brought a round of appluase from the crowd, but the opportunity showed that the Banijans meant business. For the next 20 minutes, the game was all Banija, as they attempted to break down the Equestrian defense. It was interested- the back four, even though they were down, did not push forward to help, because they knew the dangerous counter-attacking abilities of the World Cup co-hosts. They knew the team wasn't going to be able to win headers against the Equestrians, so they were attempting to thread the ball through the Equestrian defense.

IN the 59th minute, they had one great opportunity. A great one two play saw a Mavuto pass to Okafor, who one timed it to Afolayan, who was behind the defense and was in on goal. However, superstar goalkeeper Gentle Breeze made a spectacular save, forcing the ball out for a corner kick. And then, of course, a curler on the ensuing corner kick was again saved, as Gentle Breeze went to full extension for another spectacular. She desperately wanted to get this win, performing in her stunning fourth World Cup Finals on home soil. Could you blame her? She was doing everything she could to get the win.

The Banijans, however, would find their way through the Equestrian defense. A chip over the Equestrian defense saw Gitonga Kahara have an opportunity to volley a shot towards the net. He was towards the side, facing goal, and Gentle Breeze was running out to cut down the angle, and make what woudl have been another spectacular save. Gitonga Kahara, even though so young, had other ideas. Kahara, instead of one-timing it at the goalkeeper, was able to bring the ball down, and send it across towards the middle, on the ground. And who was waiting there? None other than Toyuwa Okafor, who tapped the ball into an empty net to draw the visitors level at 1. In the ensuing celebrations in the corner, Okafor earned his yellow when he pulled off his jersey to reveal a shirt that said "MUTEBI MUST GO."

Okafor, of course, is himself an ethnic Kasanke who is a native of the Busoga Islands, being born and raised there. And since most of the Banijan fans in the crowd were members of the Banijan-Equestrian community in this country, that elicited even bigger cheers. What a game, what a goal, right? All of a sudden, the game was 1-1, and the Banijans looked like they could win this thing. It was an incredible matchup between two powers in the Glorious Southwest, fighting for regional supremacy on the world stage. Now that the game was level again, however, the Equestrians would take the game to the Banijans.

More focus was drawn towards the Banijan strategy of physicality towards Pristina Shine- she was the key player on the Equestrian States, and so far, the Banijans looked as if they may escape with points because of their ability to shut her down. After the goal, Isaac Georgiadis was subsituted for Okonkwo Okparro, the man who will be plying his trade in the V-League next season. Coincidentally, of course, that means he will have a chance to get familiar with many members of that league early, when the national team plays Vilita in their next matchup, on matchday 2, with everything on the line for the Kadongo Kamu.

Pristina Shine wasn't doing much of anything- only had one shot in the game, and it wasn't on target. She was battered, she was brusied, as the Banijan players were essentially bullying her off the ball. But, of course, there's a reason she's called a superstar. And she proved why in the 85th minute. An Equestrian counter-attack saw the host nation flying up the field. Instead of completely sprinting up to try and keep up with her teammates, she hung back a little bit, attempting to have Banijan midfielders run past her to get back on defense. The strategy worked. She was able to get the ball at the 18, and for the first time all game, she was open, and had a shot on net- even if it was from 25 yards. She took her space, and buried the ball into the upper corner.

What an incredible shot, what an incredible goal. A perfect shot for Pristina Shine saw her yell, as what was a frustrating game, of getting hit, of getting pushed and shoved the whole game, was finally vindiciated, as she took what was really her lone opportunity and buried it. The Banijans look dejected. Marcus Waters looked down, the Banijan defense stood around, as the stadium shook due to the volume and the excitedness of the celeberations. THe Banijans weren't coming back now, as the Equestrians finished the game with possesion, and won, 2-1.

Marcus Waters was complimentary to the hosts. "This was an incredible match, and we are happy that we were part of the opening match of the World Cup. A World Cup opener, the first ever World Cup match for Banija? Absolutely stunning. The win for the Equestrians was much deserved. And, of course, we must tip our cap to Pristina Shine. She came out and hit the strike when it mattered most, which shows why she's broadly considered an international superstar. That said, our boys played well too. I'm not mad at anyone- sometimes, in a game this close, there must be a winner. We need to regroup and prepare for our matchup Vilita, as they will come out guns a blazing against us, as they try to punch their ticket to the knockout stages."

The next match indeed will be a fun one. Facing the Jungle Cats, the World Cup 77 champs? Banija will, once again, be huge underdogs, but the fact that we're even here at all just proves one thing- if you play the game, anything's possible. Come back to this magazine to get your full, official, in-depth preview of matchday 2!

Mriin 2–2 South Covello

"Live from the Land of Taling Ponies, it's World Cup 80! And today, we have a tremendous matchup for you, it's our beloved South Covello against Mriin. And we're just about set for kickoff. I'm Joey Frist, and I'll be joined today in the booth by Patrick Shea. And we'll be bringing you this soccer match here in the lovely land of sunshine and talking ponies. Patrick, any thoughts?"

"Well, this is a game that South Covello really should win, really wants to win, and if they don't win this one, they'll have to beat Pasarga, which is even harder. And then we've got the revenge match with Darmen, which hopefully we win. But really, the Rebels were disappointing in qualfiiers, and they'll look to get over the hump and win this one today. And now, it's time for kickoff."

...

"7th minute, and it's going to be a corner for South Covello. They've historically been strong on set pieces, so Steve Danckweed will take the corner for them. Here it comes, Pillory Cantwell is there and shoots, deflected off Uhion Loft, and the Rebs want a handball but aren't getting it. Falls to the feet of Coconut Charles, who tries to shoot it over Hawsorn's head, but she jumps and deflects it over the bar for another corner. Good early attacking effort by the Rebels. and they've won another corner. Dannckweed to take again, sends it top of the box, Ocho is there, now, HE SCORES! HENRY OCHO GOES TOP LEFT CORNER AND SOUTH COVELLO IS UP 1-0! And the fans are going nuts, they're celebrating, but we've still got 82 minutes left, let's not get ahead of ourselves here.

...

"18th minute, free kick for Mriin, about 35 yards beyond the goal, Iarrow sends it in, Lavoi tries to get a head on it, it's to Tyler's left, but he dives on it for the save and the threat is averted. Good job by him.

...

"26th minute, Mriin on the attack again, Polandre with a through ball to Vol, she's behind the Rebel Wall, only Tyler to beat, goes to his left, OH BUT HE MAKES A DIVING SAVE AND SOMEHOW HANGS ON WITH HIS FINGERTIPS! Matthew Tyler is truly a legendary goalkeeper. The Rebel Wall made a rare mistake, but Matthew Tyler bailed them out. What a save!

...

"33rd minute, and Yankee with a long ball to Charles, he's behind the Mriin defense now, he's only got Hawsorn to beat, top left, TWO TO NOTHING REBELS! WHAT A BALL BY DEXTER YANKEE, AND WHAT A GOAL BY COCONUT CHARLES! And South Covello may be well on their way to victory here!

...

"41st minute, Kress with the ball to Iarrow towards the middle of the pitch, Cal Yachtwood comes in to try to win it, but knocks her to the ground and that's going to be a foul. And now the ref si calling Yachtwood over, and shows him the red card! Unbelievable! It was a shoulder barge, it was a foul all right, no doubt about that, but not worthy of a red card unless there's something we're missing. Let's look at it on a replay. Iarrow goes for the ball, Yachtwood comes in and shoulder checks her, ok, maybe, just maybe that's a yellow, though even that is kind of a stretch. No way that's a red card, though, but nonetheless, South Covello will have to play with 10 men for the remainder of the game.

...

"And there's the halftime whistle, South Covello still up two goals, but down a man for the second half, so this will be a challenge.

...

"51st minute, Polandre plays it forward down the side to Valconi, he tries to cross it to Kreuger, he heads it, Tyler leaps for it, but it's just past his outstretched fingertips and into the goal, Mriin pulls back one, it's 2-1 now. Take a look at this, Kreuger struck it at just the right angle to get it past Tyler. And if South Covello's not down a man, maybe they have another defender there to stop either the cross or the shot, but that was a very unfortunate red card and now they can't do that. Nonetheless, the Rebels are still winning 2-1. They just need to hold on and will probably go into all out defense mode from here on out.

...

"71st minute, no real action for a while as South Covello has put everyone behind the ball in a constant effort to shut down Mriin. And so far, since that goal, they've done just that, but you just feel like something's coming. Long ball from Rei, who just came on as a sub, 40 yards out, but Tyler jumps and punches it over for a corner. Nonetheless, it's the best chance Mriin had since that goal, and it's not over yet. Here comes the corner, swung in by Quill, at the feet of Rei, he goes top left, and it's in the net, 2-2. Absolutely no chance for Tyler to get to that. Again, South Covello might have defended against that if they weren't down a man, but such is life. We're tied. And now South Covello has a choice. They can attack, try for the three points, and risk not getting any, or they can settle back and take the draw. But they can't let a third in. That would be disastrous.

...

"82nd minute, and to their credit, South Covello is attacking somewhat. They've won a free kick, about 30 ards out, and have switched to a 4-3-2, with Woody Woodstock at the second striker. Gutsy decision down a man, but that's the choice. So Woodstock will take the free kick, he sends it into the box, AT THE FEET OF CHARLES, HE SHOOTS OFF THE POST, and Loft quickly kicks it over the back line for a corner. So now Olivera will take the corner, he sends it in, Hawsorn jumps for it and saves it, knocking Charles to the ground in the process. He quickly appeals for a penalty but the ref has no sympathy, so he'll run back up the field.

...

"Last minute of stoppage here, and it's a corner kick for Mriin. If they want to win it, they'll have to score right here, swung in, Rei is there again, he gets it over the defenders but Tyler is positioned perfectly and it falls right into his hands. He'll send it up the field and there's the final whistle. 2-2 draw, and while South Covello would have hoped for better, they were clearly the better team with 11 men, and would almost certainly have won were it not for the controversial red card. We'll have the postgame press conference after this.

"Hello, welcome back, it's time for the postgame press conference. Today, we've got South Covello head coach Richard Hawkins, goalkeeper Matthew Tyler, and striker Coconut Charles. We'll now turn it over to the media for questions."

"Coach Hawkins, what do you think of today's result?"

"Well, it's disappointing, we wanted the three points, and if we'd managed to avoid the red card, I think we would have gotten it. We got off to a quick start, but we need to be able to finish matches, whatever adversity we may face. Because we will face adversity along the way, and we can't fall apart."

"What do you think of the controversial red card on Yachtwood?"

"Well, I'm not sure it was worthy of a red card, but the ref saw what he saw, the refs are never going to be perfect and we need to accept that and just be the best that we can be. We can't fall apart if a call doesn't go our way, because that's going to happen at least once in pretty much every game."

"All right, Mr. Tyler, are you satisfied with your performance in goal tonight?"

"Well, any time you let in multiple goals, you're never satisfied, especially if you don't get the full three points. But we just need to bounce back next game, and hopefully we'll get the shutout, and the win, against Pasarga. I believe in myself, I believe in the Rebel Wall, and I believe in the rest of my teammates. This tournament is far from over, and we can still go all the way."

"Mr. Charles, how disappointed were you not to get the goal towards the end there?"

"Well, when you have a chance to win the game for your team, and miss by that much, it's always frustrating. But I know my teammates have my back, that we still believe in each other, and we'll be back even stronger next game. Remember, we were down a man for more than half the game, and still came away with a point. Let's not overlook that. If we can avoid red cards the next two games, I think we'll win them both, and hopefully top the group. From there, anything's possible. Yes, we can win this World Cup, I believe in my teammates, and we all believe in each other. Together, we can do anything."

"That concludes this press conference, South Covello's next game is against Pasarga, followed by the group stage finale against Darmen. We'll be right back here for that game. Good night from the Equestrian States."

New Gazi Holds To Close Loss Against Tough Team

World Cup 80 marked New Gazi's first appearance in the World Cup Finals. They have become known as a perennial Cup of Harmony competitor. Last year, they ended ranked third in the prestigious, runners-up tournament. This year there was a chance the Gazilians may not have made the CoH. New Gazi fell to third in season standings, something that would normally have ruined their chances for progression. The cannoneers fought their way into the finals by defeating Eastfield Lodge 3-2 in aggregate.

New Gazi hoped to ride the wave of momentum into their first Finals match. Cannoneer Head Coach Oliver Hausta spoke on the team's goals going into the first match against Vilita. "Our team is an underdog, especially when you look at the momentum behind teams like Banija. The program at Vilita is a lot more developed. Our goal is to keep the game close. If they run the score on us, they can end our chances. We won't let them, despite their rank."

The Gazilian defense was equally ramped up. "I tell you one thing", said CB Demba Ngum. "Their forwards are going to have a hard time doing well against our D-line. Expect their midfield to be forced to pick up the slack." These were big words from the Gazilian, calling out shooters like Berali Tzufarei. The stage was set for drama.

There was to be no love lost between these two teams. New Gazi and Vilita had no history in the sporting world. Of course, New Gazi is known for its ties to the Empire of Vangaziland. Drivers with ties to Vangaziland and Vilita have clashed on the international tracks of the World Grand Prix Championship. They have even become bitter rivals, with many in Vilita still bitter about a season where a Vannish driver stole the spotlight from a local.

The game got started much as expected. It was closely fought with Vilita controlling the battle of possession to the tune of 56%. Vannish dual citizen Carmen Jarlsdottir spoke on the pace of their opponent. "This is the toughest team we've ever faced", she said at halftime. "It's the speed that we're fighting to keep up with. Thing is, we can learn from this. We'll work on playing to this speed for the future. We'll improve. Good competition brings better teams. It's an honor to fight it out with such historic teams."

Jarlsdottir would have a rough night. She was the one marking Jurzen Devmiko. After letting one goal through, Coach Hausta didn't think she was mismatched enough to switch. Coming into the the half, Carmen put an expert tackle on the midfielder soon after his goal. Her long leg popped out suddenly to peg the ball. Not known to him, she timed it to trap his foot as he brought it to it. The result sent the cocky shooter tumbling head over heels after he tripped. It was a clean tackle. Some of the fans objected, but it was a clean play. Jarlsdottir was exhausted at the moment, catching her breath as the ref stalled time to give her a warning. She smiled, cheeks red with delight and guilt.

"We knew they would pull something", winger Uffe Diya said about the team from Vilita. "They have bad blood and this was how they chose to do it. They picked on fans. As a team we thought, why don't they say it to our faces? So we got up to talk to them."

How did the fans feel about the players' behavior? Thirty-five year old Nijhari Kihu, a mine foreman in his African homeland, spoke to a traveling crew. "I wish he could have come up to the stands", said the tall miner. His wide biceps crept out from under his short-sleeved shirt. "It was childish. What kind of celebration was that? You'd expect more from that kind of program."

Uffe Diya would answer the goal in the 50th minute. After passing the ball across the field, timed with the line's progression forward, things were forward and attacking. Diya pulled a twist and a spin, pushing to get even more space on his man. Another defender was switching to help, but Diya had space. The left winger shot, twisting his body to put extra power into it. The ball was fast enough to beat the keeper to his movement.

Diya had too much class to retaliate to the earlier celebration. He went for the classic aircraft form, stopping at the end and making a motion as if he dropped something. He went for the boom of an explosion, a dropped bomb.

Vilita took the lead ten minutes later at 60'. Devmiko once again made the most of the match against Jarlsdottir. She tried keeping up, but was beat once again. After the game, she was asked how it felt to give up 2 goals. "It happens. It's something I can learn from." They also asked if she was fatigued. Carmen made a name for herself as the engine of the team, often putting the right pass in the right place. Today she had a different kind of story, a rougher one. She admitted the long season had started to wear on her.

Vilita would leave with a victory, but only a close one. This was a game where they could have established themselves in Group E. Instead, they are tied with Equestrian States who won by a similar margin. This means New Gazi is also still very much in the race to advance. The team still faces motivated opponents, especially in the fighting side of Banija. They may enter the Finals ranked lower than New Gazi, but they are not to be underestimated.

"We'll look to go on from here", said Coach Hausta. "Game by game."

Two Dead In Stadium Construction Collapse
by Gary Sarlock

Yesterday afternoon, during construction on the new stadium in Deloitte, an area of the construction site collapsed, leaving 2 dead and 10 injured.

At 1233 on the construction site for the new stadium in Deloitte, an area of the stand the workers were building collapsed in on itself, killing and injuring a number of workers on the site. The dead are yet to be identified before we can certify who they are, so check here for updates. The two men who have been killed were apparently working on the pillars underneath the stand while a number of other workers, those who were injured, were working on construction elsewhere in the stadium but close to the stand, and were hit or crushed by falling debris.

UPDATE:

The two men who were killed at the construction site in Deloitte yesterday have been identified, and their families have been informed by the police of their passing. George Adams and Henry Wilcott both were employed by the construction company WellBrick, who are one of a number of contractors working to help build this new stadium for the Deloitte football club and the national Ethanian team.

George Adams was 29 at the time of his passing. He was due to go on lunch break just before the accident, but his manager told him to push his schedule back by 30 minutes as he wanted that particular area they were working on to be finished before they had a break for lunch. Henry Wilcott was also due to go on a lunch break at the same time as Adams, as the two of them usually were put together to work on projects as they made good work partners in the eyes of the management.

Adams' family said he was a 'sweet, caring boy, who always put family first no matter what. We will miss his laugh and his smile, his warm embrace before he leaves for work and comes home from work. He really looked after us all well, and life won't be the same without him.'

Henry Wilcott was 36, and had been working for the company for 20 years since he was 16. He had just been married 4 weeks at the time of the accident and had just returned to work from a short honeymoon with his new wife. His wife decided not to comment in our article.

We have reached out to WellBrick for comment, but they are currently refusing to comment on the accident.

We also reached out to the Ethane Footballing Association for comment. They said that 'this is a sad and devastating accident, and we are truly sorry to those who have lost people or who to those who have been injured in this stand collapse. We will shortly be launching a deep investigation into this accident to see if we need to change any of our regulations or practices surrounding how our contractors work on site.'

We are still waiting for comment from the stadium construction managers, but their responses will be updated as soon as we receive them.

Crucial Game Ahead After Narrow Win
by Gary Sarlock

The Red Kites face their most important match in the group after their narrow victory against lowest-ranked group members Juvencus.

Ethane's win against Juvencus in the first group stage match has definitely put the Red Kites on the front foot. Along with Turori's loss to Farfadillis, Ethane finds themselves in a position where they could get out of the groups if the next match goes their way.

Coming against Juvencus was going to be a difficult game. While they are the lowest-ranked team in the group, you shouldn't be deceived as the team does pack a punch or two. Young players such as Santo Silvestri and Brunella Tafani provide the team with the pace and firepower needed to provide a deadly force in attack, while they have a solid and strong midfield and defence to back them up behind them.

While not the most impressive of the top teams, their 38 goals across the 18 matches of the world cup qualifiers is a perfectly respectable total, and while it isn't close to the Ethanian total it still represents a formidable attacking force that packs a punch. However, the surprising result against Super-Llamaland in the playoffs to get into the world cup was the moment in which the formidability of the team's attack really came into focus. They managed to beat Super-Llamaland, who were headed up by Ethane's very own Curtis Steeling, 8-6 on aggregate, scoring 4 goals in each fixture; a crucial and high-scoring set of games.

This was sure to leave a little doubt in the mind of the players in the Red Kites, but according to stats Ethane still had the upper-hand in terms of likelihood to win. For one, the team finished at the top of the group with 41 points while Juvencus finished in third with 31 points. However, the attacking stats for Ethane reveal the quality and formidability of their attack. The Red Kites netted 52 goals across their 18 qualifier games - 14 goals more - while conceding a goal less than Juvencus. So while the match was by all intentions going to be a good one, Ethane were the clear favourites.

Maybe that's why some fans were disappointed with the margin of victory. They were probably hoping to dominate, rather than win what was a slightly nervy narrow victory against the group's minnows. While the 3-2 victory against Juvencus was 3 points on the table from a match where anything but 3 points would be failure for the team, it was at times a narrow and nervy performance.

The performance started off strong for the Red Kites, with the team from Ethane practically dominating most of the first half. Alexander Dyer proved to be instrumental in midfield for the team, with Montoya doing an incredible job of feeding the three strikers out in front. Veresoto also didn't go unnoticed on the wing, although his impact was noticed more in the second half than the first.

However, it was Iwan Roberts who proved instrumental in setting up the first goal for Ethane on the 30-minute mark almost exactly. A mistake from Hugo Grec on the halfway line gave the ball straight to Theresa Desantis in defence, who was pressing high while the Red Kites were trying to find an opening. A through ball to Iwan Roberts who was making an inwards run towards the box helped open a space for Dexter Vorbeck in the box. Vorbeck received the ball from Roberts, who claimed the assist as Vorbeck hit in low into the bottom left corner, just out of the reaches of the outstretched Taddeo Bulgari.

Only a couple of minutes later, it appeared the Red Kites were hungry for a second, with Smith shooting from just inside the box. It was one of his narrowest misses of the games, rebounding off the top bar and bouncing on the line then out the goal where it was swiftly picked up by Bulgari. Goal line technology had to be consulted to decide whether it was a goal or not and it was very narrowly not a goal.

Declan Smith made up for that miss with a header from a Roberts cross into the box, which he sent into the top-right corner of the goal. This doubled the lead of the Red Kites, asserting their position within the game and leaving the Juvencus team worried.

Juvencus had a little fightback towards the end of the first half, but couldn't find the goal. They did manage a few good shots on goal, however, with a beautiful long-range shot from Santo Silvestri only just being saved by the ageing Nicholas Reed.

The momentum completely changed after half-time, however, with the Red Kites appearing content like they'd already won, while there was a fighting spirit and nervy abundance of energy amongst the Juvencus players. A flurry of nervy misses followed before a real chance came in the 59th minute. Angelino Alberighi had the ball on the right-wing but managed to work it into Joaquim Martell just outside the box. A short pass to Oriol Vives was followed by a shot, which miraculously found the bottom-right corner, halving the deficit.

At this point, the Red Kites looked nervous and worried, and they started to play an extra-defensive game, which isn't a great approach when you're a team almost completely focused on attack at the dismay of the public but at the manager's style. They played long balls down the pitch instead of holding on to the ball, and lost it in the most stupid of places. This appeared like a team that was going to end up losing this group game in the world cup, with a number of narrow misses for Juvencus.

In the 70th minute, the Juvencus players managed to find jackpot and level the game up. They were playing a high pressing game, and a misguided pass by Underwood to Veresoto was intercepted by Nino Russo in midfield. He had a lot of space to work with, so talk the ball upfield a bit, luring Fear and Desantis out of position to cover his run. This left the back wide open, and with runs from all 3 strikers from the Juvencus team it was almost impossible to cover. A quality chipped through ball by Russo into the box was mishandled by Reed in goal, leaving it to Brunella Tafani's feet, who neatly slotted it into the centre of the goal.

A sense of urgency returned into the Red Kites, but from here on in it was a poor quality game with a number of long-balls and mistakes from both teams. Neither resorted quite to desperation in their attack, but both teams knew this was a must-win game to really have any chance of progressing out of the groups in this world cup.

It was Ethane that obviously found the lucky chance in the 84th. There was a scramble in the Juvencus box, with the ball seemingly lost amongst a sea of legs and feet. Nobody could see what was actually happening in the box really until the ball emerged in the net off the foot of Samuel Mitchell. It took footage to determine who the assist would actually go to, but it appeared to be a Josh Montoya pass which was redirected by Nicolò Bassi block to Mitchell's legs, who managed to quickly slot it in before Madeiros came sliding into him.

Ethane were definitely the stronger side in the first half, but they let up and eased off the pedal in the second half, clearly thinking the game was over. But the Juvencus players managed to exploit the Ethanian team's weaknesses to get back into the game before Mitchell finished it off.

This doesn't bode well for the next game against Turori, which isn't necessarily a must-win but would be an ideal fixture to win to progress.

Turori is the second-highest ranked team in the group. However, they are barely ranked above the Red Kites, making this the best chance Ethane has ever had to start a deep run into the world cup. However, there are a number of factors which could make this difficult.

Ethane's performance in the match against Juvencus was an okay performance. They narrowly managed to beat them, but it was a slightly nervy fixture for the Red Kites, especially after conceding in the second half both times. They appeared dominant in the first half, which is where they need to be going into Turori. An okay performance isn't enough against a world-class side. A good performance may suffice. If the Red Kites play like they did in the first half of their first world cup fixture, they have a chance. If they play like they played in the second half, they have absolutely no chance.

The group performance of the Red Kites doesn't exactly point to success either. Yes, Ethane did finish top of the group and Turori in second. Yes, Turori did manage to lose to a number of low and un-ranked teams during the qualifiers. However, this does not tell the whole story. In both fixtures which Turori played against the Red Kites, the Turori team came out victorious, and relatively comfortably in one of the fixtures as well. If Ethane have not learnt from their past mistakes against Turori, they could be ripped apart by them for a third time this cycle, which would be particularly embarrasing.

Now, this isn't a must-win game. But a victory against Turori is the best path to progression from the world cup groups. After victory against Juvencus, Ethane do have a greater chance. But a win against Farfadillis is unlikely to happen, so that pathway to progression isn't really being considered unless it needs to be ie. if Ethane lose to Turori.

If Ethane lose to Turori, then the Red Kites will have to beat Farfadillis, and either hope Juvencus beats Farfadillis or Turori, or hope that the Ethanian national team can best either one of them on differentials. Basically, if Ethane lose there is very little chance of progression.

If Ethane draw to Turori, there is more hope. It's harder, but still possible. Farfadillis would probably surpass 4 points, although a victory against Farfadillis would do the job. However, the much more likely approach would be if the Red Kites were to lose to Farfadillis. If Turori lost, Ethane would be through. If Turori won against Juvencus, then the Red Kites would have to best them on differentials.

If Ethane beats Turori, then the Turori team is out of the progression equation in relation to Ethane. In most paths, Ethane progresses from this result. The only path I can see in which this would not be the case is if Juvencus were to beat Farfadillis and then beat Turori, while the Red Kites would have to lose to Farfadillis. This would then go to differentials as the Ethane, Juvencus, and Farfadillis would be on 6 points. Whatever happens, if Turori loses to Ethane then they are out of the competition, unless a miracle happens and Farfadillis, Turori, and Juvencus end up on 3 points which would be miraculous. That would require Ethane winning every game (we can dream).

Whatever happens, this game is going to be tense. Make sure you watch it.
Esportivan and Proud.

Chromatika 2-1 Sargossa
Goals: Andisori '57, Armageddon '83
Starting Lineup: Nier; Morningstar - Stef - Damjana; Thorben - Montague - Sybill - Armageddon - Xe; Andisori (C) - Sierra.
Substitutes: Victoriane -> Sierra '53, Aart -> Stef '75, Rien -> Thorben '82
Summary: Although it was Keira Andisori that drew first blood, the young blood of Enigma Armageddon was the one that allowed the Chromatiks to advance with a hard fought win over Sargossa. Sandra Sybill was responsible for the volley that Andisori headed in, but that wasn't enough; Armageddon's free kick before the whistle was what did the Sargossans in. This gives the decision of Parker to pepper in some non-starters into this match some meaning and worth; both Lucjusz Stef, Enigma Armageddon, Xi Xe, and Rowena Sierra got valuable minutes starting in a group match. Cosumar also won their opening match, which means that if the two nations both win their next matches again as well, they'll likely fight for the top of the group with qualification to the knockout rounds already at hand. Also, if Mia Ria is to lose the game against Barunia, that would really end the debate of Nier vs. Ria, at least for now.
Predicted Starting Lineup vs. Barunia: Ria; McBee - Aart - Ilya; Thorben - Montague - Sybill - Hellion - Dragana; Andisori (C) - Victoriane.

South Toronto 2–3 Darmen
A much better performance to start the second half of qualifying. I'd still like to see the back three actually shut down our opponents every once in a while. Lucanus finally scored some goals, only had one in the first half of qualifying.
Campo - Virgo, Abbey, Porsche - Goldschmidt - Ó Cuilinn, Winton, Butler, Stafford - Lucanus, Blackwood
GOALS: Lucanus 22', Butler 47', Lucanus 71'
Yellow Cards: None
Red Cards: None
Substitutions: Russell for Blackwood 55', Mac Pharlain for Ó Cuilinn 67', Parks for Winton 76'

Darmen 3–1 Commonwealth of Baker Park
Risky move on my part to start all substitutes in the match, but this is the point where I need to really start thinking about the cuts I'll need to make to the roster. It worked out well, got three points, but, none of the players really stood out as exceptional. I don't think any of them will be making it into the final roster for either the World Cup or Cup of Harmony, whichever we make it to.
Abram - Deniaud, Krämer, Spalding - Tobias - Armbruster, Cardoso, McNeil, Welch - Hurst, Reagan
GOALS: Reagan 12', McNeil 49', Hurst 73'
Yellow Cards: Tobias 66'
Red Cards: None
Substitutions: Lyne for Spalding 67', O'Sullivan for McNeil 67', Vaughn for Hurst 80'

North Dajao 1–1 Darmen
Disappointing result. We deserved three points. We needed three points.
Falkenrath - Wilkie, Coghlan, Maddox - Ramírez - Mac Pharlain, Parks, Byrnes, Freud - Firmin, Russell
GOALS: Firmin 38'
Yellow Cards: None
Red Cards: None
Substitutions: Lucanus for Firmin 70', Butler for Byrnes 70', Porsche for Maddox 78'

Darmen 4–1 Newmanistan
Back to the starters and an expected result. Blackwood was massively impressive in his performance. The Rockets had no clue what to do on defense, Blackwood's runs really caught them off guard.
Campo - Virgo, Abbey, Porsche - Goldschmidt - Ó Cuilinn, Winton, Butler, Stafford - Lucanus, Blackwood
GOALS: Lucanus 17', Blackwood 41', Goldschmidt 57', Blackwood 80'
Yellow Cards: None
Red Cards: None
Substitutions: Parks for Winton 70', Maddox for Porsche 70', Firmin for Lucanus 77'

Kita-Hinode 1–2 Darmen
The 0-0 draw in the first half was surprising. This victory was an even bigger surprise. This team is definitely making strides towards becoming a team which can contend with the top dogs.
Campo - Virgo, Abbey, Porsche - Goldschmidt - Ó Cuilinn, Winton, Butler, Stafford - Lucanus, Blackwood
GOALS: Lucanus 36', Ó Cuilinn 67'
Yellow Cards: Winton 78'
Red Cards: None
Substitutions: Wilkie for Virgo 63', Parks for Winton 79', Russell for Blackwood 79'

Great Chota 2–4 Darmen
This is most likely the last chance I'll give the reserves to start the match and show what they can do, the remaining matches are just too important. If results go our way, we might even avoid the playoffs. Imagine that!
Abram - Wilkie, Coghlan, Maddox - Ramírez - Mac Pharlain, Parks, Byrnes, Freud - Firmin, Russell
GOALS: Firmin 29', Freud 32', Russell 58', Hurst 75'
Yellow Cards: None
Red Cards: None
Substitutions: Hurst for Firmin HT, Cardoso for Parks 68', Spalding for Maddox 77'

Darmen 1–1 South Covello
After beating them in the first match, I expected the South Covellans to fight harder, and fight harder they did. The most challenging match we've had all campaign, we were lucky to come away with the single point that we did. Thank God for Lucanus.
Campo - Virgo, Abbey, Porsche - Goldschmidt - Ó Cuilinn, Winton, Butler, Stafford - Lucanus, Blackwood
GOALS: Lucanus 68'
Yellow Card: None
Red Card: None
Substitutions: Ramírez for Goldschmidt 65', Freud for Stafford 74', Mac Pharlain for Ó Cuilinn 74'

Main Nation Ministry 2–3 Darmen
We still need South Covello to slip up, but from here on out, victories should see us finish either 1st or 2nd. I wouldn't mind leading Darmen to its first World Cup in 12 cycles by winning our group.
Campo - Virgo, Abbey, Porsche - Goldschmidt - Ó Cuilinn, Winton, Butler, Stafford - Lucanus, Blackwood
GOALS: Stafford 8', Blackwood 63', Virgo 79'
Yellow Card: None
Red Card: None
Substitutions: Firmin for Lucanus 55', Byrnes for Butler 69', Coghlan for Abbey 69'

Darmen 1–0 Coldfield
Holy.... WE DID IT! Well, South Covello did it actually. They screwed up. And I'm fine with that. Every Darmeni is. World Cup here we come!
Campo - Virgo, Abbey, Porsche - Goldschmidt - Ó Cuilinn, Winton, Butler, Stafford - Lucanus, Blackwood
GOALS: Lucanus 18'
Yellow Card: None
Red Card: None
Substitutions: Wilkie for Virgo HT, Maddox for Porsche HT, Ramírez for Goldschmidt 77'

Ko-oren 0–1 Darmen
I'm not sure of the exact number of times we've faced Ko-oren, but this is the latest match in a string of many played against the Ko-orenites. And its another victory for our side. Decided to mix the starters and reserves together, cuts are just a week and a half away.
Campo - Virgo, Abbey, Porsche - Ramírez - Mac Pharlain, Parks, Byrnes, Freud - Lucanus, Blackwood
GOALS: Blackwood 81'
Yellow Card: None
Red Card: None
Substitutions: Hurst for Lucanus HT, Butler for Byrnes 73', Goldschmidt for Ramírez 73'

Equestrian States 2–0 Darmen
Another mix of starters and reserves. We just couldn't produce any scoring chances. Even bringing on Lucanus and Blackwood didn't change anything. Oh well, on to Pasarga.
Abram - Wilkie, Coghlan, Maddox - Goldschmidt - Ó Cuilinn, Winton, Butler, Stafford - Firmin, Russell
GOALS: None
Yellow Card: None
Red Card: None
Substitutions: Lucanus for Firmin 62', Virgo for Wilkie 68', Blackwood for Russell 75'

Commonwealth 1-2 The Holy Empire--BP game but Bunnies class comes through

Frank Armitage
Daily Mail Chief Soccer Writer

Reporting from Jhanna City, Starblaydia:

In the last few moments near the end of the Group D opener here at the Jhanna City Recreation Ground, the several thousand fans who made the trip from the Commonwealth for the nation's first World Cup experience took up a familiar children's song, appropriate to nothing in particular:

"Here comes Peter Cottontail
Hoppin down the bunny trail
hippity hoppity Easter's on it's way

Bringin' every girl and boy
Baskets full of Easter joy
Things to make your Easter
bright and gay"

It certainly had to be taken in the spirit of self-deprecating, grudging respect for the side ranked 6th in the multiverse, who had withstood 90 minutes of Baker Park's uncharacteristic physical onslaught. If you had a bet on the over/under for yellow cards, over would've been the winner for you, as the sides racked up 3 yellows apiece.

It was a tense, sharply contested encounter that showed early on that there would be an edge to the play that most Commonwealth matches don't generally devolve into. The team of the Holy Empire--who belie their appearance by their single minded purpose--didn't seem to be overly bothered by the nature of the play; in spite of 47 fouls between the sides, there were none of the confrontations you would expect under pressurized circumstances. The Bunnies took as good as they gave and did seem to realize that the difference in ranking between the two sides was not going to be a factor.

In between the whistles and the stop-start nature of the match, there were moments of jogo bonito as they say in Brazil; tactically there was not much to separate the teams, but age difference between the lineups was really where the divergence showed. The Holy Empire squad is made up of mainly highly decorated and experienced members of the powerful Invincible Legions of Doom, while the Commonwealth consists only of professional soccer players in their mid to late 20's and early 30's.

Only 65 seconds elapsed before BP captain Matt Villareal picked up the first of 26 fouls called on Baker Park; it could be argued that the adrenaline rush was evident from the start as the team's appearance in the tunnel ahead of the pre-match walkout electrified the supporters dressed in black and gold. The modern iteration of the hooped il Bombi shirts from 1969 presented a dramatic touch, but it took a good third of the opening half for the side to settle in.

Wing play was non-existent as Tony Santos and Hafiz Igiekhume cancelled out their counterparts Whiskers and Bogart, and Erica Shaw and Villareal had to work to find space in the narrow center of midfield controlled by Twitch and the Bunnies captain Wiggles.

It was only a fantastic individual effort by Snuggles that saw The Empire score the opening goal; a run into space followed by a laser guided pass from Twitch that saw Snuggles one touch to Prince Fluffles and receive the return with room to smash past Scott Hartline on 34 minutes capped off a period of Bunnies possession that came right after Baker Park's best chance in the first 45.

Just at the stroke of halftime, Eric Herrara saw yellow for a slightly late challenge on Fluffles; he joined the Holy Empire's Muffin in Ms Aronen's--the referee from Savojarna--notebook of naughtiness.

Coming out of the dressing room, the Bees made a subtle adjustment to their formation, and it caught the Bunnies out defensively. Shaw and Santos began to work higher against the back three, forcing Twitch and Bogart to come back to receive the ball. It was a poor Benjy Bunny clearance that fell to Ian Coverdale that resulted in the equalizer; Coverdale slid to the ball to Shaw, who took it on one hop and blasted towards the near top corner. Snowball made a fantastic save, but couldn't gain control of the rebound and Ali Salih tapped home on 56 minutes. The explosion of sound from behind the net was the loudest the crowd had been since the anthems.

Santos saw yellow just 4 minutes later after a tackle on Muffin at the midfield stripe. Although it looked innocuous, the Empire midfielder couldn't continue after receiving treatment along the touchline and Hopper came on to replace Muffin.

As the Baker Park coaching staff discussed changes to the lineup, their hand was forced on the 68th minute when Herrara hesitated on a 50-50 ball and Wiggles swept past an off balance Villareal to find Snuggles free of his marker and the deft touch shown was a sublime finish. It was now 2-1 with just a bit more than 20 minutes to play.

Manager Trevor Richmond called back all of the subs who were warming up behind the goal line and he wasted no time in bringing Alex Sandoval on, in place of Coverstone just 90 seconds after the restart; Valerie Agahambri swapped positions with Sandoval to take up Coverstone's place in the slot behind the strikers.

Bogart saw yellow for an aggressive tackle on Santos on 76 minutes and Richmond brought on Naroun Patel to replace Santos shortly after.

Susan Brown was the third BP player to find a place in the referee's notebook following a hard shoulder charge on Snuggles just after 80 minutes had elapsed.

Jamari Bozeman came on as the final Commonwealth sub on 84 minutes in place of Shaw, who didn't appear to have anything left to give; the stats showed she had put in the most running during the match and also had the most touches. The final chapter came with less than 2 minutes left in regulation time; the Bunnies defender Patches fouled Sandoval in a dangerous spot on the pitch, and saw yellow as a result. The direct free kick was blazed just over the cross bar by Agahambri and the Empire played out the final 4 minutes of stoppage time without much resistance.
