In our fourth attempt - and the first one in which our representants weren't the guys, but the Savojar Women's National Team - we made the World Cup proper for the first time in a dramatic home draw against Eshan. While the Savojars were historically lower ranked, many local observers actually favoured our ladies thanks to their aggressive, attractive play in the qualification that kept them ahead of multiverse giants Vilita for most of the campaign. However, their tank burned out towards the end of it and in the second half of the Savojar qualification campaign, they lost their top spot to the world's number 3 and were forced into a playoff duel.
In this duel, they spectacularly beat Eshan 2-4 away thanks to two goals by Sigurdsdottir and one each by Jarkasjärvi and Otalainen. The euphoria for the rematch at the Carl Gustaf Bjurman was extreme, with the country having the World Cup ahead of them. The team was greeted by a choreo on the stands which used white and blue smoke bombs combined with red flares to create a giant Savojar flag with a brightly burning red star in its middle. The display seems to have done its job of motivating the Savojar team, who forced Eshan to score four goals early on as Sigurdsdottir headed a cross by Reskilainen to the bottom right corner. At the end of the game, Savojarna had held their opponents to a 2-2 draw, celebrating their first World Cup euphorically. But what are the chances for said World Cup?
Our Team
Additionally to the 23-woman-roster from the qualification campaign, coach Lise Asbeck had nominated seven additional players to her pre-WC-camp. Of those, only two have managed to challenge the squad: Victoria Maersk, who was substituted in three games of the second half of qualification following the injury of Pernilla Johansson, replaced Karin Persson who failed to make an impact at the highest level. Somewhat more surprisingly, Denise Rydberg was replaced by the 24 year old CB Nina Rasmussen. Asbeck explained the decision with fitness issues with Rydberg after the CB got lightly injured in a game with her club, FFK Valdhavn, but also said that Rasmussen, who was a central part in her club's surprising run to the vice championship, was more convincing overall.
In defence, the team remains the weakest spot, but overall solid with Viktorija Petrova being the unchallenged goalkeeper. There were recently some criticisms that the Savojar backs were too offensive, but this has also been used as a dangerous weapon in the past, as Reskilainen and Midström managed many important assists and even some goals. We have seen in the past that we sometimes struggle against fast, counter-attacking teams, which could be dangerous against two top squads of the Multiverse in the death group we got for our World Cup debut. The midfield, while not having the star power of the offence, has proven crucial in the qualification. An interesting struggle may break out between routined Pernilla Johansson, who played a strong first six matches before getting injured in a tackle against Norcambria. She was subsequently replaced in the squad by Victoria Maersk and by Lenka Otalainen on the pitch. Otalainen is a very different player from the slower, more defensive and more solid Johansson. With Ekaterina Vailova and Stefanie Raukanen also being more defensive players, it isn't unlikely that Asbeck will opt for the more dynamic Otalainen, with the option to remove her later for Vailova or Johansson. Finally, the forward position is dominated by Freya Sigurdsdottir. The 25 year old striker has led the team in scoring from the beginning of the campaign, assisted by Jarkasjärvi's speed on the left flank. The slight weakness in the attack is the right flank, where Haakonson showed few weaknesses, but could also hardly exceed expectations.
The Group
Unfortunately for Savojarna, they got drawn into a veritable group of death. The first opponent of the Savojar women is going to be played against Brenecia, the world's number 8 and one of the worst teams to draw from the second pot. They qualified as the first team in the entire multiverse, with only two losses and one draw in a group including Savojarna's old WCQ 77 rivals Juvencus. Other opponents included Sargossa and Tobiasia, meaning that this group was not easy for them either. Savojarna and Brenecia have history as well, crossing paths in our initial WCQ campaign where they could challenge the Brenecians twice, but benefitted from a crisis of their higher ranked opponents. With this being the opening game of the World Cup, we are probably going to see a highly motivated and well-prepared team. They are typically rather defensive, and if Savojarna come on aggressively and attempt to pressure the favourites, they could have a chance to score an early goal. Everything else is probably going to end in a Brenecian victory, as turning a match against this team once they are behind could be highly difficult.
Following this, we will face off against 26th-ranked Damukuni in what is likely going to be a do-or-die match for both teams. Damukuni got a tough group including the ice hockey dominators of Valanora, 95X, former Baptism of Fire winner and favourite-killer Filindostan as well as the Alpine Union. In this potential death-group, an unexpected victory of Razenthuria against 95X and a last-day victory of Damukuni against Savalen got them second place behind the Vanorians. Against Maryloupe, they showed their full offensive potential with an aggregated 5-0 despite being a rather defensive side as well. Savojarna will have to act posturing and play aggressively again, but Damukuni are likely less dangerous in their counter-attacks than Brenecia. A victory in this game is in the realm of possible as well as necessary if the Savojars want any shot at the octofinals on the last day.
The third match will be the toughest, against Eura. Around last WCQ, we remember having had an international incident on our hands after they had allegedly supported the Liberal Party in an election. Despite this incident, we hope that our match against the Euran squad will go over without any nasty scenes on the stands, even though the fans will probably sing the International quite a bit louder than usual. Facing Apox, Nova Anglicana and our neighbours Taeshan, Eura won their group relatively comfortable with only two losses and one draw. This demonstration of skill makes Eura a hot favourite for this group of death and possibly even the World Cup as a whole. Our best shot at an upset against Eura is probably that the Savojars will need three points, while the Eurans may already have qualified and be a bit less aggressive. We can expect an offensive game against the WC 73 champions, as both teams play a similar, fairly attacking style compared to other teams like Brenecia.
The opening match for Savojarna comes tonight at 19:00 Savojar time against Brenecia, played in the Elements Stadium at Ponyville, Equestrian States. It will be broadcast live on STV2 from 18:30 onwards, like all World Cup matches. The World Cup magazine "EqueStar Compact" will be broadcast every day after the last game of the day on STV2.
