The teams

Priterscat state
Priterscat state has been a power in college basketball for many years in Northwest Kalactin. The school has some of the best players in the nation so they are a very good team. This year they won the National championship in Northwest Kalactin.
Mascot: Hawks

Kalactanian naval academy
The kalactanian naval academy was never a good team in college basketball until a few years ago, they were the number 10 seed that made it to the final four, this year as a number 1 seed they made it to the championship game.
Mascot: Gunners

Akers state
Akers state is not just a good team in football as you may recognize them from NSCF, but they are good in basketball, also the team finished in the Elite Eight and lost to Griffin school there.
Mascot: Kalactanian

Northwest Ballina state
Northwest Ballina state finished 7th in the nation this year after a good season they made it all the way to the final four, but only to lose to Priterscat state the tournament champions.
Mascot: Red storm

Griffin school
Griffin school was this years suprise they were the first number 6 seed to make it to the final four, and this year they also lost to the feared kalactanian naval academy by 6 points pretty good right!

THE ROCKET REPORT

TIME FOR SOME MADNESS

by Taylor Larson,

It’s that time of year again, where several nations send their best collegiate programs into an international tournament in search of truly being able to call their school a “World Champion”. It’s not an easy or a simple task, as a thirty matchday schedule proceeds a conference tournament, and then, if you’re lucky, a 64-team tournament. Not sure how these student athletes get the class time in amid all that, but who cares, we love this time of year.

Newmanistan had a lot of success in conference play during the last tournament, and a recent third place finish at the International Basketball Championships makes us optimistic that we will be able to build on that success this year. Six schools are returning to the tournament, while there will be two newcomers. Let’s take a look at our representatives.

Loudon Empire University-
After being crowned national champions, LEU returns to the tournament after a successful run last year. We’ll be seeing much of their lineup returning, and just like this year saw them build on prior success at home, we should expect to see them do it on the international level, as well. Junior Shaquan Bateman is the leader of the team, and averaged 25.8 points per game at home, as well as being the nation’s leading rebounder. He is a physical presence in all aspects of the game and looks forward to showing it to the world again. “We have unfinished business,” he told me in an interview, “We proved that we are the best in Newmanistan, and now we have to show that to the rest of the world. We are not going to be happy with what we accomplished so far.” LEU has been assigned the Eternal Conference, a Valanora-based conference. It was won last year by a Newmanistanian school, the University of Tundra Falls.

Pocono City Tech-
The school I affectionately make fun of on every opportunity (because I am Pocono City University alum), the nerds are looking to follow up what was an impressive run last year. Motivated by being put in a conference called “Big Seven Five”, and enjoying thinking about all mathematical equations involving sevens and fives, they proceeded to win that conference with their score adding up to “7" if you added each individual digit, and the opponent’s score being “5" if you subtracted the two individual digits. This year, they are in the Shadow Conference, based in Chromatika. They’ll have to find a new way to get motivated, perhaps scientifically this time.

Southport University-
After winning the national championship two years ago, Southport University was somewhat of an underachiever in NSCAA 8, and were upstaged by fellow Southport school, Keisler College. That went a long way in improve KC’s credibility, while Southport University has had some turnover. They graduated three of their starting five from last year, and are less experienced then other Newmanistanian lineups because of that. They have plenty of talent, and in a couple years with maturity you can expect to see them reach their peak. Just because they are not there this season, it doesn’t mean they can’t make a long run. They will be in the disappointingly named “Satan” conference this year. Well, good thing they didn’t send Tundra Falls to that conference.

University Of Tundra Falls- Speaking of UTF, with the guidance of the Spirits, you can expect to see them be very competitive again and look for their second consecutive conference championship. Last year, they won the Eternal Conference, and this year will showcase their skills in the Arrowsword Conference, which is based in Drawkland. Drawkland had plenty of success in the last college tournament, which saw them follow up that up with a title in the International Basketball Championships last year. It’s a good place for UTF to be, and their older, defense-first philosophy will make it difficult on the competition.

University of Empress Jessica I- The Jessicaville-based school continues to be on the upswing, and the play of freshman Spencer Doyle has the student body and alumni very excited that a championship may be in the cards very soon. Doyle was named the Empire’s top freshman, and joins a starting five that only has one senior. Junior Joey Raznick, somewhat undersized, makes up for that with tremendous agility and ballhandling. In an interview, Raznick stated, “We cannot be overlooked in this tournament. We are going to be very good, and do whatever it takes to get a championship. When we do that, we are dangerous.” They will compete in the Filindostan-based Red Sun conference with an interesting rival: New Lakeland University of Cassadaigua. Covering that will be a highlight, and if you don’t know your ancient One Big Island history as to why that’s interesting, don’t worry, I’ll take you to class on that during the tournament.

Keisler College- Last year, Southport University won the national championship. Small Keisler College, based also in Southport, always played second fiddle to them. They still do, but last year in the NSCAA 8 tournament, it was Keisler College that had the longest run of any Newmanistanian school, making it all the way to the final four. The school used that to their advantage, and were able to recruit an impressive freshman class in the same year that Southport was recruiting aggressively. Led by Matthew Vilardi’s 32.6 points per game, and the best three and four point shooter in the Empire (a four point line exists in Newmanistanian domestic play), Keisler College is thinking enormously now. They will participate in the Three Stars Conference, also based in Filindostan.

North Charlotte Empire University- For the first time, NCEU is taking place in the international tournament. No one expected them to get this far, and just five years ago, they were 5-24 at home. A coaching change and a new philosophy on playing style turned the fortunes of the school around, and they had their best run in the Newmanistanian tournament this year, cracking the elite eight for the first time. Junior Darnell Cambridge says they will not be star-struck. “Getting to this tournament was a goal. Now, we’re going to continue moving this program forward.” They are in the Big Seven Nine Conference, based in Drawkland. Perhaps that one went from Sevens and Fives to Sevens and Nines. As long as its not Tens and Threes.

Pocono Lake Business School- To rub it in even more in regards to Pocono City University’s underachievement in college basketball and never being able to get this far, there is a second Pocono City area school in the tournament. Pocono Lake Business School is based just east of Pocono City, on the banks of the Penthoria River. Somehow, they did more then just learn economic theory this year, and their basketball team flourished. They have a boring playing style, but it works. Agonizingly, it works. No one will be entertained by watching them, and that is why they have become so good. They are just fundamentally sound to an absolutely ridiculous level. They are part of the Big 14 Conference, based in the Free Republics.

So, get yourself pumped up for this tournament. I am excited, I have filled out my predictions here for the office pool. I probably won’t win, usually someone in the tech department wins, because they actually sit there and analyze things far more then the normal person. That’s what happens when you go to Tech, I guess.

Athlete Blogs: Emma Cooney, Senior, Brattleboro Tech

As the final seconds wound down of our semifinal appearance against UCH (University of Concord Heights), I was faced with the apparent reality that my collegiate career was coming to an end. We had a strong year, making it to the Final Four is a major accomplishment, and we played well against UCH. But when a final opportunity went by the wayside, and we trailed 80-75 with five seconds to go, and without possession of the ball, we knew we had come up short. For many, they will be back next year. For me, this was going to be it. My career was over, the games as a kid as a little girl, to the AAU teams, to high school basketball, and now all the way to the collegiate level, that long journey was done. I couldn’t help but feel my eyes watering up. I looked at my teammates, knowing that most of them have at least one more year to play for Brat Tech. The real world was setting in. Sure, there were some smaller professional leagues that would have interest, but playing professional at the highest level did not seem like it would be a realistic option. I would try, and I will try, but I went to Brat Tech to get an education as well. Now, those hours in the classroom were all starting to seem so much more important.

I had heard the news that Cassadaigua was considering returning to the NSCAA. I didn’t know how real it would be, but part of me had hoped that it would hold true. It is not cheap, and sometimes it’s amazing that this tournament takes place concerning the expenses associated with it for a school of higher education. Some schools have their funding from the government, like a UCH, but Brat Tech, as a private institution, does not have that. As we returned to the locker room after the UCH loss, coach Thorpe made the announcement. We were going to the NSCAA. Thankfully, we are a large school, and the administration did not hesitate for a moment to send us to the tournament, regardless of the expenses involved. My career would not be over after all.

The NSCAA has won twice by Cassadagan schools before, but never by us at Brat Tech, and we are determined to change that. It’s a long task, and we really don’t know what to expect. We know we are in a conference called the Shadow Conference, and it’s fitting for me as I have temporarily overcome the shadows that were telling me that my collegiate career was over. It’s a 14-school conference, that will see us travel to many different countries. That is exciting, and will be a great learning experience. Our professors are not cutting us any slack, and have assured us that we will be responsible to stream lectures online when we are not playing and will be responsible for different assignments. At the same time, I think (and hope) they realize that eventually we might need a little more time to get the classwork done. This is quite an amazing journey, and I hope that we make that final tournament. We are optimistic, because we’ve played well at this level before, but realize that it’s been a while since we last have.

Personally, I am just grateful to keep playing!

NSCAA 9: previews and predictions
BIG 14 CONFERENCE
Man, this conference is a doozy, with a couple of the NSCAA's most storied schools thrown into one conference. Whoever wins this conference will probably be crowned the favorite for the whole championship... and that will probably be Elmanden District College, the defending champions from last time around. Other perpetual powerhouses include Deprí Lanar University from Chromatika and Rinaldi Naval Academy from Valanora, as well as Pocono Lake Business School and Mount Ester University from Quebec; we are expecting both teams to do quite well. And then there's Ceni's own City Centre College, which made very few roster changes from last year. Center Cade Wintergreen is inarguably the best player on the team, with his bulk doing just enough to be able to muscle past opposing defenders. He probably won't be able to muscle past the Drawkish side, though.

Prediction: 4th

THREE STARS CONFERENCE
Ceni's very own Taurendil Institute, one of the few highly regarded Cenian schools in the north of the country, will compete in the Three Stars Conference, with the conference championships located in Filindostan. On its face, there are a lot of schools in this conference that shouldn't do very well, but there are a couple to watch out for: Labrador State University, the University of Concord Heights, and Keisler College, of Quebec, Cassadaigua, and Newmanistan, respectively, will be the big competition for the Cenian school, especially with Keisler reaching the Final Four last year. They aren't the best Cenian team out there, but, seeded 28th overall, they made it to the quarterfinals of the Big Show last year with an underdog and unheralded team. Victor Halcón is their new addition as point guard, and he's been on a tear recently; Javier Aiza and Benjamin Espinoza have been to the big show before, and have the experience to lead the team.

Prediction: 1st

ARROWSWORD CONFERENCE
Only two major competitors should trouble the University of Montague-Hawkesbury in the Arrowsword conference, named after Ceni's very own Andrew Arrowsword (... and his Drawkian half-sister Sarah Arrowsword): the University of Tundra Falls, from Newmanistan, and the University of Myana, from Chromatika. Both teams made the big tournament last year, and are gunning for it again; Montague had a poor showing in its conference, but still managed to get into the big dance anyway. They'll definitely be looking on to improving their performance from last year, and coach Ari Falconer has really been working with her team to get them into tip-top shape. Sophomore guards Ethan Pendrago and Neo Starfallen form the core of this team; they're inexperienced, but fast and good shooters. With last year's failures in-conference weighing on them, they'll be motivated to do well in this conference.

Prediction: 2nd

SKY BLUE CONFERENCE
Surprisingly, this conference is devoid of much competition, filled with many schools from nations that really don't participate much in the competition or care about it to the extent that Ceni does. Endemian College at Whitehaven - seeded first in the big tournament last year - will of course be one of the big favorites, but they'll have to face a Chromatik school, Chromatik State University, a rival of CCCU which upset them in the second round of the big tournament last year. Raynor University of Valanora is one of the other teams that could be a wild card in this conference, but they're probably not as good as the Cenian team. The entire starting lineup from last season will return, with the Mar-Shayal siblings and Solari Sevlaya forming the core of the team (Kel is rumored to perhaps get a spot on the Cenian IBC team if things go well here). They're sure that they will.

Prediction: 1st

SATAN CONFERENCE
In this... unusually named conference, the Cenian Academy of Science and Technology (CAST from hereon out) is not the overwhelming favorite, despite reaching the Elite Eight last year as the number six seed. Ducentu State University of Drawkland, which also reached the Elite Eight last year, will be the big favorite, reflecting the general Drawkian prowess at this event; Southport University of Newmanistan will also be a big contender for the tournament title, despite having a more inexperienced roster than most of the other Newmanistan teams. CAST has a mixture of experience and youth, with Shalumite center Otto Mauser the best player, but they really don't have too many big names among their roster. An interesting choice is Maya Ozuar, the sister of Cenian DBC goalkeeper Bella Ozuar; we'll be keeping our eye out on her. In short, CAST is good, but not Drawkian good.

Prediction: 2nd

WOODLAND CONFERENCE
Now we're getting into the big Cenian schools, and in the Woodland Conference, the country's flagship university, the University of Ceni, will represent the nation. They lost in an upset in the first round of the Ultra 64 school, so they'll be back with a vengeance to get into the later rounds. François Gaucher-Faubert, the huge Quebecois center, will be their flagship player, with the skills to pay the bills, so to speak. Backing him up: promising point guard Ryan Vermillion and freshman phenom Matthew Omega, who massively impressed new coach Olivia Karanthyr, who has had the team play a quick motion/passing game offense to quickly score buckets and then play well defensively. But they'll face tough competition: Old Mountain University, which reached the final match of last season's Ultra 64 competition, and Seth Johnson College of Cassadaigua. They'll do well enough to beat the Cassadaiguans... but the Drawkians? That's a whole other matter entirely.

Prediction: 2nd

ROYAL CONFERENCE
Drawkians hate the University of Cenial, which surprisingly won NSCAA 7 after defeating Sadeg State University in the final round for their ONLY defeat all season. Drawkians vowed revenge, and they got it in the Sweet Sixteen round of NSCAA 8, when Ducentu State University knocked out the Manticores. Thankfully, there isn't a Drawkian team in sight in Royal Conference: only Rutland College of Cassadaigua and the un-spellable Filindostani university may be competition, and probably not as good competition at that. UCenial has two of the players from that NSCAA 7 victory returning in Alastair Verian and Zelimir Frankic, the Izmedun star point guard who also has an Olympic gold medal to his name; Orion Darkstar is a strong senior who plays for the Cenian national team, and Mason Kosokhan, the little brother of Cenian football NT goalkeeper Joshua, has promise as well. They should win their conference.

Prediction: 1st

BIG SEVEN NINE CONFERENCE
And last but not least, the Big Seven Nine conference will feature the University of New Oxford, which has the biggest basketball culture of all the Cenian schools. They're thanking their lucky stars that they won't have to face off against a Drawkian school in the conference stage; instead, they'll be facing a smattering of Newmanistani, Chromatik, Republican, and Filindostani schools, all of whom are legitimate competition but just not the Drawkians, or Cenians for that matter. Their offense and defensive strategies focus more on team play rather than relying upon individual stars, but they do have one of the best power forwards in the country in Ashur El-Amin, who's already earned playing time with the Cenian national basketball team. In this conference, they should have a decent lead over the other teams... but they'll be saving their energy for the big show at the end of all of this, hoping to better their Final Four performance two years ago.

Prediction: 1st

FSS Universities Getting Absolutely Shrekt in NSCAA
As expected, or should we say, exshrekted, the universities representing the FSS have been absolutely rekt, shrekt, and disrespekt at the NSCAA tournament. In classic fashion, Stahvik College, home of the 3x consecutive year quiz bowl champions, have been utterly dismantled in each of their games so far. Miraculously, they are not in last place, as some other garbage team put in an even worse performance. Says Jonah Nizzy, Swiss Minister of Sports and Leisure: "This is why we don't leave the swamp." Hopefully our boys in green will be able to get some work done at the NSCAA. Regrettably, they may have already blown their shot at a title. In other words, it's all ogre now.

NSCAA 9 Conference Preview

Postby Drawkland » Sun Mar 25, 2018 11:04 pm

NSCAA 9

Hello, and welcome to NSCAA 9! Here today we have a preview for every conference in this ninth edition of the NSCAA. We'll go over our projections for each conference, as well as showing off the logos for each one. We will divide the conferences up by which nation is hosting their championships and officiating the games. Each of the 8 hosting nations have 2 conferences each, so we'll be showing off 2 conferences at a time.

ImageImage
Big 14 Conference and Blue Eagle Conference
Free Republics

Hailing from the Free Republics, the Big 14 and the Blue Eagle Conferences feature a heavy disparity in skill level between the two. The Big 14, new this season, feature a new logo, the first NSCAA logo drawn up by Drawkian designers to have a double-ringed border. The Blue Eagle Conference has the same logo from last year, the striking blue eagle on a white backdrop.

The Big 14 features big names like Deprí Lanar, Rinaldi Naval Academy, City Centre College, Pocono Lake Business School, and Mount Ester University. All of these, however, pale in comparison to the big school in town. And that school is Elmanden District College out of Drawkland. As the defending NSCAA 8 champions, Elmanden is not only projected but expected to own this whole conference and easily cruise to the Conference title. How other schools will fare is hard to tell at this stage. City Centre, Pocono Lake, and Mount Ester all look like early runners to try and challenge Elmanden for the Big 14 crown.

The Blue Eagle Conference is not likely to be as tight of a race as its Republican counterpart, however. There is a Drawkian school in this conference, but it's Cemmendy Tech. While the Cyberpunks have always been prone to capture top seeds from a great in-conference performance, they consistently and spectacularly flame out in a first-round upset. Will they win the conference? It's really hard to tell. There's not many to challenge them, on the other hand. Alnio University of the Arts from Chromatika could prove to be a thorn in their side, with Quebec's Universite du Saguenay the other possible contender. As far as the rest of the conference, there could prove to be some upstarts to make moves for the Big Dance, but at this point we highly doubt that. This conference is not set to be a powerhouse.

ImageImage
Longtail Conference and Tir Snake Conference
Ceni

Two conferences coming from Ceni return from last edition, the Longtail and Tir Snake conferences (sorry, Terranean Conference!). Longtail looks to have a fair amount of schools realistically competing for a title, while Tir Snake is more lacking in that department. As far as logos concerned, the Longtail conference's fabulous logo from last edition returns, with purple and pink livery reminiscent of the very Longtails that populate the Cenian countryside. The Tir Snake Conference logo is also the same, save for the red and blue of the logo changed to a brighter and more striking shade that will be more obvious on uniforms for TV.

The Longtail Conference has 4 strong schools and a small host of other schools that could realistically make a run for the conference title. On the outside looking in are Lyceum of Filindostan University - Yogyakulta from Filindostan (whose full name I am never typing again), North Coffs University of Northwest Kalactin, University of Ankole from Banija, and Farrer University of Quebec. The main front runner, of course, is Corinth City University of Drawkland, two-time consecutive Final Four loser. With any luck they'll repeat their performance from the last two editions with even more success (that is, actually making the final). Hungry to usurp them are Mar Sara Tech of Valanora, who are riding high after their football program won the NSCF, Pùr State University of Chromatika, and Grande Mountain University out of Cassadaigua. The latter actually won NSCAA 3, way way back in the day. They may not be the same team by any means, but they certainly have pedigree on their side.

The Tir Snake Conference doesn't have such an illustrious roster of rosters. The resident Drawkian school is the ever-internationally-underperforming Drawk Corps University, who has a relatively easy path to the Ultra 64. Universiti Nasional Pilindostan of Filindostan and Baston College of Free Republics may have a shot, but besides Queen's University of Quebec, DCU has very little standing in their way. This is assuming they don't just pull a classic Drawk Corps U in international play and fall flat on their faces. Also be on the lookout for Sabinal State of Valanora and Ayronhrod University of Cosumar, who also have a chance at maybe pulling a conference championship out of their asses.

ImageImage
Eternal Conference and Woodland Conference
Valanora

Valanora brings back their two conferences from last edition, the Eternal Conference and Woodland Conference. Both have about 3 or 4 running for the conference title, then a bunch of mediocrity. Both of their logos from last edition remain the same, the Eternal Conference with their silvery lettering and the Woodland Conference with the iconic pine tree that's seen even on gridiron pitches in the NSCF.

The Eternal Conference is a three-horse race more than anything. On one side, you have Loudon Empire University, one of Newmanistan's top performers from NSCAA 8, thirsty for a victory and another good seed in the Big Dance. On another side, you have Chromatik City College University, who are just really glad they don't have to face Corinth City University thrice this season and will be happy to try beating a different Drawkian school. That Drawkian school, the third contender for the conference, is none other than the tragic powerhouse of Sadeg State University. After their absolutely crushing upset in the NSCAA 7 final which broke their undefeated streak, they haven't been the same. NSCAA 8 was a big step down as they lost in the second round after an only mediocre conference stage. This season, they'll either score big on the rebound (both performance and game-wise), or continue in their downward spiral and struggle. It's a toss-up. Kizza I College of Banija, University of Western Filindostan - Bandaroon, and Universite d'Abitibi of Quebec are also playing around, likely hoping for a few upsets to go their way so they can skyrocket to the big tournament. Will it happen? That remains to be seen.

The Woodland Conference has a few more contenders than its Vanorian counterpart, and will be a much more chaotic race for the conference title. University of Ceni is in the running, along with Seth Johnson College of Cassadaigua, Deprí Sanar of Chromatika, and the losers of the NSCAA 8 championship, Old Mountain University. Funny how the losers of the last two NSCAA championships are both in Vanorian conferences this year. Anyway, any of those colleges have a really solid shot at taking the Woodland Conference. Istria City College of Banija and Kempsey City Centre University of Northwest Kalactin are also suspect to maybe make things tough for those ones really at the top. Old Mountain is obviously the favorite, and perhaps they'll be able to capture the same magic they held last year and rocket through to the tournament and beyond.

ImageImage
Three Stars Conference and Red Sun Conference
Filindostan

Filindostan makes its first foray in the NSCAA count by claiming two conferences of their own. The Three Stars and Red Sun Conferences are both wide open, mainly because neither of them have any pesky Drawkian schools in the way of a realistic shot at a championship. The logos are all new, the Three Stars' conference logo containing a gold, silver, and bronze star on a blue background to signify the spirit of competition and also the sky because stars are in the sky. Heh. And the Red Sun Conference is based on the Red Sun in the Filindostani flag. Actually the 3 stars thing is from the flag too, but it would be dumb to have two basically identical logos, right? Oh, and on an unrelated note, don't take any second looks at those Free Republics logos.

As aforementioned, the Three Stars Conferece doesn't have any Drawkian schools, so it's basically wide the hell open for somebody to try and take it for themselves. The clear frontrunner for this conference is Keisler College of Newmanistan, who had an unexpected Final Four run in NSCAA 8 before being dismantled by the Mechanors of Elmanden who went on to win. They may have had a great season, but they'll always be wondering what could've been if they'd been able to hurdle Elmanden. Maybe this season they'll reminisce by winning the conference and getting a great seed in the bracket. To do that though, they'll have to deal with Taurendil Academy of Ceni, Labrador State University of Quebec, Everlin University of Valanora, and the Cassadaigan University of Concord Heights on the way. Any one of these could probably pull of the upset for the easy entry into the tournament. The latter of those, Concord Heights, also won NSCAA 5. If there's one to make deep run besides Keisler, it's them.

The Red Sun Conference, lacking a clear front runner like many other conferences, is way more open. Sure, you have New Lakeland University of Cassadaigua, University of Empress Jessica I of Newmanistan, and the football powerhouse of University of Loyola-Istria out of Banija. And you also have University of Hondo from Valanora, California University in Quebec, and Akers State from Kalactin, but really, do any of those sound like real big threats to each other? This is all in all a weak conference, and one of these schools will likely get a super inflated record and storm into the tournament only to falter. Or maybe there is a real gem hidden in the rough here. Ultimately there's no way to tell. If we had a guess, it'd be the Cass or the Newman schools.

ImageImage
Arrowsword Conference and Big Seven Nine Conference
Drawkland

Ah yes, the glorious Drawkian conferences. The Arrowsword Conference is a direct translation from NSCAA 8's conference, while the Big Seven Five became the Big Seven Nine Conference to account for the change from 12 to 16 teams per conference. The logos remain the same, beside the numeral change for the B79. The Arrowsword Conference, named after the big-name stars of Drawkland and Ceni, features aptly-chosen arrow and sword graphics, while the Big Seven Nine logo is pretty hard to fuck up. Just put a 7 and 9, slap on a Drawkian color scheme, bang you're done.

The Arrowsword Conference clearly lacks a Drawkian members, so it's a pretty even race for the crown. University of Montague-Hawkesbury from Ceni and University of Tundra Falls from Newmanistan are definitely the big two that will be battling it out at the top for a chance to take the easy way to the dance. University of Myana from Chromatika and perennial NSCF powerhouse Ramusok Capital University have an outsider's chance at the conference championship, but Montague-Hawkesbury and Tundra Falls are definitely the ones who will be kicking ass the taking names, just like the Arrowsword siblings.

The Big Seven Nine Conference, whose name is definitely not going to start getting on people's nerves, is in a similar position as its brother (or is it sister?) conference. A Cenian school and a Newmanistani school will likely vie for the title. Those schools are the University of New Oxford and North Charlotte Empire University. There are, at least, more realistic onlookers in this scenario. Z'ai'ai University of Technology from Chromatika are a big secondary contender, with Nejax Republic University of the Free Republics and San Marco Polytechnic College of Filindostan as more tertiary contenders. Overall, neither conference really stands out as being able to produce multiple powerhouses.

ImageImage
Rainbow Conference and Shadow Conference
Chromatika

Chromatika, like Ceni, comes in bringing two of their three conferences from NSCAA 8 back into the fray. Lacking the Mezzanine Conference in their midst, the more patriotic Rainbow and Shadow Conferences will once again have their logos gracing many jerseys this season. The Rainbow Conference logo remained the same, except now with a misty R nearly watermarked over the rainbow bars from last edition. The Shadow Conference's logo retained its exact design, the striking white and black contrast a classic. However, the Rainbow Conference is definitely the weaker of the two, at least when you compare the schools they'll be hosting this time around.

The Rainbow Conference is probably one of the weakest available in the NSCAA this time. Starksville Medical Institute, one of Cassadaigua's weaker entrants, is the best school in this conference. Yeah. Stoneshore College of Cosumar, University of San Marco from Filindostan, and maybe the Griffin School of Northwest Kalactin are the only challengers to Starksville Medical in the Rainbow Conference. Sure, they'll all get decent win counts because every game needs to have SOMEBODY win it, but they'll largely be empty wins. Our guess is that there's unlikely to be more than one or two Rainbow Conference logos gracing jerseys in the Ultra 64. Just the luck of the draw, really. Starksville, your job is to not choke it out.

The Shadow Conference might not be as poor of a shape as its counterpart, but it's still probably not gonna be a powerhouse either. At the top are Brat Tech out of Cassadaigua who will battle it out with Pocono City Tech from Newmanistan for the top. As a Newmanistani would probably put it, it's gonna be a battle of a bunch of nerds. Meanwhile, Carleton University of Quebec and University of Moravica from Banija are also potential upsetters for the conference title. It still remains to be seen whether this will actually play out to an interesting conference. But all the Shadow Conference members can take this to heart. At least you don't have to watch the Rainbow Conference.

ImageImage
Hell Conference and Satan Conference
Royal Kingdom of Quebec

Quebec puts their hat into the NSCAA hosting ring this time around. Their rather alarmingly-named Hell and Satan Conferences are the last ones to contain Drawkian schools, so you know who's going to come out of these conferences alive. Hopefully. I just don't want to know where those conference championships will be held. Anyhow, logo wise, they're pretty straightforward. The Hell Conference has the old english font proclaiming its name in deep red tones. Really ominous. Probably going to have to be censored when they broadcast games. Oh well. The designers for the Satan Conference logo decided to go a little unconventional yet iconic. They simply used the evil grin devil emoji. The only conference logo so far to not just be a generic circle, the Satan Conference uniform badges will feature the horns and strike fear into their opponents. Or something.

The Hell Conference features Metropolon City College, one of the surprises of NSCAA 7 (making the Elite Eight from the 37th seed spot), and one of the disappointments of NSCAA 8 (losing out relatively early in the bracket despite half of pundits projecting them to win the entire tournament). Despite this, their conference play definitely improved from season 7 to 8, this season they're set to definitely lay waste to the hellish landscape of this conference. Standing in their way of being the kings of Hell, are the Concord Heights Beauty School (irony?) from Cassadaigua, University of Filindostan, and South Caddonia University of Valanora. This theoretically should be an easy qualification for MCC, but you just never know with these guys.

The Satan Conference has the resident Drawkians of Ducentu State University, who any sane person would project to win the conference, but you just never know. Besides, the Satan Conference is a little more populated at the top of the talent pool, so it's not a foregone conclusion. The Cenian Academy of Science and Technology, otherwise known as CAST, is a definite danger to Ducentu, and Southport University in Newmanistan is an equally scary program to face. Turbani Tech of Valanora could also prove to be a threat based on their quite decent performances compared to other Vanorian schools in the past few editions. This could really go to anyone, Ducentu's assumed position at the top is not safe by any means.

ImageImage
Sky Blue Conference and Royal Conference
Newmanistan

Finally, we get to the conferences of Newmanistan. The Sky Blue and Royal Conferences are familiar names from last year, and they certainly have some big names carrying the blue and red this year. Logo-wise, the Sky Blue Conference is the same general design, but edited and cleaned up to be better-looking. I'll be honest, the "rocket" from last year looked pretty goddamn awful, and it's good to see the designers put some effort into making it look better this time, and with smaller and cleaner lettering to boot. The Royal Conference will continue rocking the red crown and fancy letters. Hey, is anyone thirsty for some soda right now?

The Sky Blue Conference may lack any Drawkians, but it has no shortage of talent to show off. The most fearsome of these is definitely the Endemian College at Whitehaven in Ceni. While they got upset in the second round in NSCAA 8, they did grab the #1 seed in the tournament, much to the chagrin of Drawkians everywhere. They were tied for the best record and won their conference, so everyone else rocking the checkered borders and blue patches of the Sky Blue Conference will be sweating their asses off when it comes to playing Whitehaven. Still, Chromatik State University and Raynor University (fresh off an NSCF conference championship) aren't going to go quietly. There will still be a battle for the top of this conference, like it or not.

And finally, the Royal Conference features another Cenian powerhouse likely to top it. The University of Cenial, NSCAA 7 champions (sorry, I just threw up in my mouth a bit after typing that), definitely have the most realistic shot at grabbing the conference title. Rutland College out of Cassadaigua, Universiti Tanjung Pagi - Jakulta from Filindostan, or maybe even Northern Moravica University from Banija, all have their eyes on the prize however.

In this hectic NSCAA season, everybody wants their shot to be recognized, and even if you don't win your conference tournament, a runners-up placement or a good season record could be enough to grab the attention of the at-large voters enough to get you entry to the Ultra 64. And then, you have a chance for greatness. And then you'll probably lose to a Drawkian school by a double-digit margin. Man, fuck those guys. Good luck, everyone. Let's see some good-ass basketball.

Remember, all trash talking comments are made in jest! I love you all.

Conference hosts, feel free to grab the logos for your conferences and use them as you please. I encourage this, in fact. If you want me to edit or completely change one or both of your conference logos, just ping me on IRC or shoot me a TG and I'll tend to your request ASAP. I'll then edit the logo in here and send you a link.

Thanks everyone and good luck! Also,

CUTOFF for Arrowsword and Big Seven Five Conferences!!

Acadia College senior Sam George celebrates after hitting a three against the University of Humaliwo last Saturday
Acadia College, Hastingside State, Lebanon get off to great start in NSCAA
By Kaiy Pierreson, College Sports Columnist | @kaiy_sports_sbt

(LORFIELD, HUNTINGTON) The Acadia College Revolution, champions of PACA and the Polaris Conference, have gotten off to a hot start in the NSCAA 9. After being sleeped on by many journalists from other countries, Acadia might prove their worth against heavyweights Loundon Empire University and Sadeg State University.
Acadia College itself is a hidden gem. Located in the hilly town of Lorfield, just near the Robertpine border, Acadia College is a private liberal arts university, with 14,756 students attending. Founded in 1889 by settlers, Acadia is renowned for their academics, choir, law, and yes, basketball programs. The college has a policy that every student attending has to have an average of at least 82, and this extends to students on sport programs as well. Alumni include Prarie High Court judge Angelica Takkavuci, Central Commons Storm star Erik Ross, and MP Eliza Parranso, among others.
But let's talk about the thing that Acadia is in this article for: basketball. The Acadia Revolution have won 9 Polaris Conference titles, having won them back-to-back in the last 2 seasons. The star of the team is sophmore point guard Alex Laurens, who dropped 27 points and 11 assists on Humaliwo. Laurens has attracted the attention of multiple NPBA teams. Many are also expecting Laurens to attract the attention from bigger, international leagues as well. The Revolution have a dedicated fan base, selling out every home game at Martins Arena, a historic arena with the student section going crazy every game.
Acadia beat the University of Humaliwo 83-60 first at Martins. Alex Laurens, as before mentioned, dropped 27 points and 11 assists. Coach Joel Caruzzi said after the game: "This was a great start to the season. Alex played great, the team played great, and the fans were awesome. Perfect NSCAA debut.
The next game, the Revolution traveled to Bereanda and downed Dalton College in a 88-86 thriller that went into overtime. Shooting guard Marc Mulligan hit a clutch corner three with 11.2 seconds to go, and propeled the Revolution from a 1 point defecit to a 2 point lead.
In the final game of the week on Sunday, Acadia returned home to beat heavyweights Kizza I college from sporting power Banija 70-59. Alex Laurens and SF Philip Washington both had great games, with Laurens scoring 19 and Washington scoring 22. Oh, I didn't mention it. Acadia is in the Eternal Conference in the NSCAA.
Elsewhere, the Mission Forces academy started opposite the Revolution, with the Bombers losing by at least 10 points to Nard Academy, Ohio Commune Academy, and Raynor University. (SKY BLUE CONFERENCE)
The College of Lebanon Cardinals also went undefeated this week, with wins against Vadim College, Winchester University, and beating Caister State University 79-75 in overtime. (ROYAL CONFERENCE)
The Huntington University Retrievers started the week of well, downing Labrador State University from powerhouses Quebec 71-64, but then couldn't keep that momentum going, getting smoked by Universidade Portia from Lisander 77-57, and losing to Everlin University 77-65. (THREE STARS CONFERENCE)
Riverlake Academy was swept badly, losing to Ashby State University, getting the L 96-93 to Tripoloski University in a great game that went into overtime. They were seriously beaten in the final game of the week, losing by 31 points to powerhouses Cenian Academy of Science and Technology. That 96-65 loss is the third worst Riverlake has ever suffered. (SATAN CONFERENCE)
Hastingside State lived up to expectations, taking care of Aya University 98-70, Nostian University 80-67, and Hesevan Mining University 84-72. (RAINBOW CONFERENCE)
Promenade State beat the University of Moderation 79-66, Lusavik Academy 70-65, but lost in the final game of the week to Bayville College 97-84. (SHADOW CONFERENCE)
The University of Stonebridge hit a buzzer-beater to win against Soviet Midwestern University 80-78. However, they were whooped by Don Bosco Tech 90-61 in the second game. The Royals took an 82-80 win against Abilene Christian University, getting on top in the final minutes of a seesaw game. (BIG SEVEN-NINE)
And that is the summary of the first week of Prarieans in NSCAA basketball!

Lisière University Wins First Ever Game, Throws Huge Party, Campus Destroyed
We regret to inform the citizens of the Swiss states, as well as those watching from around the world, that the entire campus of the once prominent and prestigious Lisière University has been entirely levelled to the ground. Yes, as you can see here:

broadcast switches to massive pile of steaming ashes and burnt, shell-shocked buildings

Quite simply, Lisière University no longer exists as a physical entity. This all happened after winning their first ever collegiate basketball game, yes.. you heard correctly, first ever. Lisière University had the longest losing streak of any Swiss team at any level in all of history, an incredible 0-103204 record. Despite existing for approximately 600 years as a beacon of intellectual greatness and grandor, Lisière University had never won a collegiate basketball game. It was in fact believed that the team was cursed.

However, after defeating Kempsey City Centre University in the NSCAA tournament, the Lisièreteers snapped the streak, and in doing so, incited massive campus-wide riots which ultimately resulted in the destruction you witness here today. It is believed that college residents, in celebrating the victory, engaged in heinous acts such as flamethrower vandalism, as well as that which is both godforsaken and totally outlawed: fluffy cheese-and-wax tyrannosaurus.

A bittersweet moment, indeed.

NSCAA 8 Final Four

1:30 left to play, NSCAA 8 Final Four
Elmanden District College vs Keisler College

Earlier that night at Cenial Pavilion, Old Mountain had bested Corinth City by nearly 10 points to pave their way to the NSCAA 8 championship in ways no Drawkian would've predicted. But now, mere hours later, Drawkian fans everywhere were faced with a crisis. Elmanden District College, another rather unlikely contender from that edition, was locked in a close back-and-forth battle with Newmanistan's Keisler College, the sole non-Drawkian team remaining in the tournament. With just over a minute and a half left to play, Elmanden's Mechanors had the ball and were looking to even up the score. Keisler was leading 68-71.

Klaas Roma of the Mechanors had the ball, dribbling around the perimeter. He tried to set up a screen with Katherine Burrell, but Keisler's Matthew Vilardi saw it coming and pressed against Roma. Roma was under pressure and came off his balance a little bit. He started to fall to the ground, and flung the ball up in a vain pass attempt to Vincent Dahl in the paint. The wayward ball was tipped up in the air by Vilardi and he caught the deflection. With an instant fastbreak, Vilardi sprinted up the court and paused at the 3-point line. As Keisler's top threat and a wicked point guard, there was no doubt in the crowd as he launched one from downtown. Coach Melissa Mayra of Elmanden called a time out right afterwards. 68-74.

All the fans at the Cenial Pavilion began to sweat. With only 90 seconds to go, a 6-point gap is hard to overcome. Difficult, sure, but not impossible. We're sure that's what Melissa Mayra was saying to her players in that huddle. We likely won't know exactly what was said there, but all we know is what happened afterward. Klaas Roma was subbed out to the 5th-year senior (sometimes called a super-senior in Drawkland), Erik Antonise. Antonise was the one to inbound the ball to Kat Burrell, and with Keisler carefully guarding the other side of the court already, the two trotted up the court with urgency. This far behind, they needed a 3 to get back in realistic contention. After a few seconds of dribbling, Burrell passed the ball in to Vincent Dahl, who took a shot hard against the glass. It bounced off, rebounding perfectly into the hands of Alva Rigby, who then fired the ball back outside to Antonise in the corner. Antonise, from behind the line, had shaken his man and went up for the shot, draining the 3 pointer to make the score 71-74.

Keisler was now on their toes a little more, and they were hasty to get set up for their possession. Marquis Scott went to pass the ball to Vilardi, but streaking out from the other side of the court was Alva Rigby. The Drawkian rushed the pass and swatted the ball from Vilardi mid-dribble while he was turning, barely avoiding giving the shorter man a big elbow. Rigby solidly grabbed a hold on the ball and leaped in the air to decisively dunk the ball. With a little over a minute to play, Elmanden was only down by 1.

Keisler's coach then called a time out to curb the momentum a little bit and to switch up the gameplan for the Newmanistanis, now that they were going to have to put up a real effort to stave off the Mechanors. A few minutes later, the teams were back out on the court, and the game resumed. Vilardi brought the ball up the court cautiously but also with a little urgency behind his dribble, but once he reached the arc and stood against the Drawkian defense he slowed down, clearly attempting to burn some clock. Kat Burrell started guarding him closely, a bit too close for comfort, and he was forced to move around, throwing the ball out to Steven Gagner who'd just subbed back in. Gagner was faced with a similar position and ran out from the corner, dribbling around then passing the ball out to Marquis Scott. Scott had an open shot, or so he thought, and went up for a three-pointer ... which missed. It bounced off the rim into the midcourt where it was picked up by Vincent Dahl, who immediately kicked it out to Erik Antonise. Antonise, with long strides and a small head start on the Keisler players, bounded down the court. Gagner went to try and stop him from driving to the basket. Antonise, seeing this, stopped right outside the 3-point arc, took a moment to collect himself, and dropped in a 3-pointer like it was coin in a change jar. 76-74, and Elmanden had the lead for the first time since 7 minutes left in the 2nd half.

With around 40 seconds left on the clock, Keisler couldn't drain the clock and take a last-minute shot to tie it. Elmanden would have a chance to get the final shot. Everyone knew it. Keisler could try and play for a false shot and a rebound to truly drain the clock, but then you risk the board monster Drawkians stealing the rebound and killing the game then and there. Gagner inbounded to Vilardi while the rest of the players remained on the other side of the court. Neither team had any timeouts left. With a little bit of dribbling and half-hearted passing, Keisler killed what they could of their shot clock. Tommy Hargrove got the ball with about 10 seconds left on the shot clock, and drove in. Barely getting around the towering hands of Dahl and Rigby (at 7 feet, Hargrove was still a half a foot shorter than the post occupiers of Elmanden), Hargrove got the layup to go. Tied at 76. 15 seconds left.

Rigby, close to the ball, inbounded it to Kat Burrell. The other super-senior in the starting lineup, this was her last year playing for Elmanden, and was a fan favorite. She had been a starter since around the start of her sophomore year. She took the ball down the court, Antonise and Rigby flanking her. They had a solid 10 seconds to work with. With a tied score, they could do anything they wanted. They just needed the ball in the basket, ASAP. Burrell, once she was in the range, passed it sidelong to Eve Nolene. Nolene drove into the basket, then got a quick bounce pass to Dahl. Dahl made a similar movement, before shooting the ball back out to Rigby. Then Rigby drove in to the basket to try for a layup, before bounce passing it back out to Kat Burrell, who'd manage to move to an open section of court. Behind the three point line, at the diagonal angle. A second left on the clock, everybody in Cenial Pavilion, hell, everybody within a million mile radius watching this game, all rose to their feet. Burrell took the shot, jumping and fading a bit. And it was, in such a cliche fashion, nothing but net. The Cenian arena was shaken to the core as the crowd went wild, and the Elmanden bench rushed the court as the horn sounded to end the game.

As Kat Burrell got mobbed by her teammates and the Elmanden Pep Squad played the school fight song (and the Keisler fans and team went to gather their things quickly so they could drown their sorrows sooner), fans all around Drawkland rejoiced. This time, there would be no foreign spoiler. The NSCAA title was coming home to Drawkland, where it had belonged since 4 years prior.

THE ROCKET REPORT

TOURNAMENT UNDER WAY

by Taylor Larson,

Early games have been played in the ninth edition of the NSCAA Tournament, and Newmanistanian schools have done a generally good job in the first few games of establishing the Empire as one of the top contenders in the tournament. They aren’t Drawkland. Not sure anyone really is right now, as their play in the last tournament was truly out of this world. That does not mean that everyone else plans on rolling over for Drawkish schools, and nations like Newmanistan and Ceni, and probably Cassadaigua given their history, are going to give it their best shot. Additionally, Vanorian schools can never be counted out, and who knows what kind of upstarts we may see. Cosumar and Chormatika are very capable of hosting a champion, and the IBC co-hosts, Filindostan and Banija will be threats. So, don’t just do penciling in all Drawkland schools quite yet. Every three games or so, I am going to take you through the competition and provide you an update on what is going on with our schools, so continue to support your team, even if its Pocono City Tech. Tech-heads just don’t have to leave comments afterwards.

Keisler College- After making it to the Final Four, we know the expectations are high (and probably unfairly high, all things considered) for the school. However, so far they are looking powerful in the Three Stars Conference, winning all three of their games to this point in a convincing manner: 76-58, 78-60, and 82-65. The middle game of that set was a win over Ceni’s Taurendil Institute. In a matchup of exciting of young point guards, sophomore Matthew Vilardi had the upperhand of Taurendil’s Victor Halcón, a talented freshman. Vilardi expects Halcón to be better when they play again, “He’s a good player, he will be back. I watched plenty of tape of him heading into the game, so I was able to keep him contained, and he never hurt us. Players like that look for redemption though, so I know it will be much harder. For now, we will focus on other matchups.” Looming as a threat is 3-0 University of Concord Heights from Cassadaigua, a former champion of the tournament.

University of Empress Jessica I- On the flip side, this school has struggled early on, with just one win in their first three games. After cruising to an 89–78 win in the opener, UEJ lost their next two games by identical 77-66 scores. Releinthi National and State College was the first one to beat them, coming from Abanhfleft, a nation of course with tremendous ability, and then they lost to Natanians and Nosts Scientific University from that named nation. This shows the conference will be competitive, but the team isn’t that worried yet. Center Nick Draxler stated, “We can see where we went wrong and make adjustments before this thing gets out of hand. We know we are better then this record shows, but there are still so many games left and we can learn from it.”

Southport University- A person told me that the Satan Conference is not actually named after the Devil, but is named in honor of an older hockey player that used to wear number 81. Not sure if there is any truth to that, but if you don’t otherwise like the name of the Conference, you can pretend its named after them. We know they love hockey in The Royal Kingdom of Quebec, after all. Southport is 2-1, defeating a Vanorian school in the opener before losing to now 3-0 Irnot University. That school is based in some place referred to as Utica, New York. They better be good, because if its anything like a place called Utica, New York that I had a dream about one time, there is absolutely nothing to do in that city. We’ll have to continue to monitor this conference closely. Southport is expected to be good, and so the next handful of games will be important to see if they can separate themselves from the pack.

Pocono Lake Business School- After starting 0-3, and making people wonder if the Empire made a mistake by sending them to the tournament, these guys got a sense of what it is like in the real world of business. In other words, you need to wake up early and be ready to play. They were, and with earlier then usual game times, they have gone on to win their next three, and presently stand at 3-3 now. It was an important rebound for this team. Forward James Sirchia said they felt playing in the morning hours would be an advantage, “Business meetings happen at 9am or earlier all throughout the world. You can’t expect to sleep in, and we were ready and flawlessly executed our game plan.” That sounds nice, but a couple of these wins were too close for comfort, so the jury is still out on whether or not they truly have rebounded.

Pocono City Tech- Oh yeah, we can’t forget our friends out at Tech. Once again, the school thinks they are amazing since they are in the tournament, and have started off with three straight wins. None of them were dominant wins though, winning the games 89-84, 76-75, and 80-72. The 76-75 win over Lost Hills University was all about survival, as the team led 76-69 with 28 seconds to go. They conceded a three, and then turned the ball over, and conceded another three to LHU, cutting it to 76-75. After being fouled, Lucas Bennerman missed the front end of a one-on-one, which was rebounded by LHU. Fortunately, a desperation shot by the opponent was airmailed, and nerds held on for the win. Bennerman spoke after the game about disappointment, “We can never cough that up again. We are lucky to have held on.” Bennerman is lucky as well as the 91% free-throw shooter picked a bad time to miss. It’s expected that Brattleboro Tech will be the team’s main opposition. Nerdy guys and nerdy girls will certainly look to find matches after the game.

Loudon Empire University- Expectations are high for LEU, winning the national championship and playing in a conference that Newmanistan won last year. Most people in Newmanistan feel that if we have a chance of knocking off a Drawkish school for a title, Loudon Empire is the one to do it. Of course, their fancy, “look good first, worry about consequences later” approach has not been to be effective in this tournament. They managed two convincing wins over schools that they should beat, but then were defeated 77-72 by Sadeg State of Drawkland. Sadeg State is looking for some redemption too, as after an undefeated run to the NSCAA 7 title game, they were knocked out by University of Cenial, who is playing in the Newmanistanian based Royal Conference. Junior Shaquan Bateman was disappointed in the loss, but is looking at the big picture, “Playing Sadeg twice will make us better in the big dance. We’re already playing one the best teams in the enter universe. I thought we played well in the game, and our effort showed in the other two wins we have.”

North Charlotte Empire University- The unlikely entry for Newmanistan in the tournament is also playing in a conference that we won last year, the Big Seven Nine conference. It was renumbered to reflect the number of schools in the conference. (We should have been able to figure that out, without being told! Duh!) It’s a mixed bag of results for them so far: one crushing win, one shocking loss, then one nail-biting win. There is some solid competition in this conference, so NCEU is definitely a school where we have to see more games to truly decipher how they performing.

University of Tundra Falls- After winning the Eternal Conference last year, the team is hoping the spirits will still be able to guide them in a conference being based on Sonnel. They had a tough test to open play, and pulled off a 69-67 win on the campus of Ceni’s University of Montague-Hawkesbury. That made the team feel good, and perhaps a little too overconfident as they lost to a school from Tomure. Both Newmanistanian schools in Drawkland-based conferences were upset by a school from Tomure. Maybe Tomure will be better then expected, we’ll have to see.

At any rate, that is where we are right now. Plenty of games still left to be played.

Athlete Blogs: Lauren Callahan (PF)- Sophomore, Grande Mountain University

I was sitting down in the middle of a lecture on the current state of the World Assembly.
A couple students were going to have to take part in a debate as to whether or not the World Assembly is completely useless, or if it actually serves a purpose. Cassadaigua, of course, has never even slightly considered the World Assembly considering a lot of the junk that gets passed. That’s not to say all of it is bad, but let’s face it, there are some pretty liberal things that have passed that make most member nations a puppet state. But I’ll digress, because that is not why you are reading this blog. Hopefully you are still reading after that. During the lecture, I felt my phone vibrate, and I had to see what it had said. It was a text message from my basketball coach, Sarah Edwards. “Call me as soon as you can! Urgent news!” is what it said. There were still 45 minutes left of class, and I knew I could not last that long without finding out the news. I sat there, trying to listen to what my professor was saying, but at this point, they were just a bunch of empty words as she went on and on. After about five minutes, I could not be kept in suspense, and I texted back to my coach that I was in class, but she could send me the message on what it was about and I would call her after class. It took coach a few minutes to respond, but she would, “I know you’re in class now. Focus on your class. Call me after.” Yep, just what you would expect from a coach!

So, I tried a little longer to focus on the lecture material when I felt my phone vibrate again. Again, I pulled it out and I had a message from my basketball teammate, Brianna Jordan. “OMG!!! This is so amazing!! I can’t wait to play some more!”, it had said. Obviously, Brianna was not in class so she was able to talk to coach. I didn’t really know what it had meant, and if it was just that Brianna was going to keep playing this year, or if we were going to be playing some more. Since Brianna was a senior, she could be fielding professional offers, although she is expected to be selected early in the upcoming Cassadaigua Basketball Association entry draft. I figured she had something lined up, so I sent her back a message asking who she was playing for. “Us, silly!”, she replied, almost instantly. At this point, I figured I would just leave the lecture hall. I hadn’t paid attention to anything the professor had said for about 20 minutes anyway, so I just got up, quietly excused myself to the professor, and left. Being free, I called up Brianna, and she filled me in! I could not believe it either, we were going to the NSCAA tournament! Going to Grande Mountain University, we are well aware of what we, as an institution, accomplished several years ago in the third NSCAA tournament. A lot of time had gone by, and the reputation of the school’s basketball program had been tarnished from the Ashley Stokes and Meghan Kinson incident. It had been a while since that happened, and more then likely there are so many new international basketball programs popping up now that only a few nations even know what that was all about. Others who may be old enough, probably had forgotten, so it was time for Grande Mountain University to once again be thought of as one of the top basketball universities in the entire world.

I was smart enough to not call coach back until after my class was scheduled to end, but I had to act surprised that I did not know the news. Again, coach Edwards was smart enough to realize that I would have found out from a teammate by this point, so I didn’t have to put on that act for too long. She explained to me the long mission that the NSCAA tournament is, that it consists of the 30-game regular season schedule, and then a conference tournament, followed by the big tournament. She explained that we would have expectations, and that the nation would expect us to be part of the big tournament, and then make some sort of run, if not a championship. We had done it before, and as a nation, we had done it twice, so even though a nation like Drawkland is on top of this world right now, as well as their own planet, there is room for new contenders.

After a few days, it started to become all the more real. We had some practice sessions and then received our “Welcome To The Longtail Conference” material. It showed the list of schools we were going up against, and the schedule that we would undertake. We would go to places like Drawkland and Chromatika; Valanora and Cosumar, and many others. For a World Studies’ major there would be no better education I could get about the world then to travel to all of these other nations, and play basketball. Without much more time to lose, it was off to Cosumar for our international return to this tournament. After three games now, we are a perfect 3-0 but we are just getting started. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us. Grande Mountain University is back, baby!

NSCAA 9: Good, Bad, and Ugly MD 1-3
Welcome to our series covering NSCAA 9: a quick read summarizing the good, bad, and ugly of each conference. Of course, match reports will be available in more detail, but for those who just want a summary, this is the place!

BIG 14 CONFERENCE
GOOD: A 2-1 record, with double-digit victory margins against BNU from Bendicion and Kraarough of Savalen. (But who names their school Kraarough?)
BAD: Definitely the team's 86-78 loss to Mount Ester University of the Royal Kingdom of Quebec, in front of a partisan home crowd. City Centre College was playing well, but the visitors had the advantage at every moment.
UGLY: A foul by Mount Ester's Josée-Anne Galgundec in the first matchday. She pushed Gabriel Spitzer, midair, knocking him down, just as he was about to score a basket. Oops!

THREE STARS CONFERENCE
GOOD: Taurendil Institute pulled off a win after a two-day losing streak! And it was a decent win at that, a comfortable 23-point victory over Ceder Hill College.
BAD: Taurendil lost to Keisler College, probably their biggest competition in the conference, by a full eighteen points. That's not good if they're expecting to win the whole thing.
UGLY: The team's opening-day loss, at home, to Ashkam's Dar Mora State University. A dunk by center Edvard Rasa at the buzzer sealed their fate, despite a closely contested match.

ARROWSWORD CONFERENCE
GOOD: Two dominating wins on MDs 2 and 3, a 18-point victory over Ramusok Capital University from Cosumar and 10-point victory over the University of Thomoe from Espezah.
BAD: A tight two-point loss to Newmanistan's University of Tundra Falls. They're a good team, so there's no shame in losing to them, but it's pretty disappointing nonetheless.
UGLY: The University of Thomoe scored seventy points past UMH's defense (it's generally regarded as the best of all the Cenian schools). It's a bit of a stretch, though, as UMH managed to score eighty in return.

SKY BLUE CONFERENCE
GOOD: Well, Endemian College at Whitehaven is 3-0, even if their three wins did come at the expense of relatively low-quality opposition.
BAD: Despite their 3-0 record, there are four other teams that share that record, and ECW is fourth out of those five.
UGLY: On the first matchday, at home, ECW could only beat the unknown Technical College by a single 3 point shot. ECW looked terrible then.

SATAN CONFERENCE
GOOD: CAST is 3-0 after dominating performances, first in the group by a large margin. They'll need to keep this pace going if they want to keep up with Southport University and others.
BAD: We're grasping at straws for bad things here... a five-point victory against TV City Tech is pretty bad, right?
UGLY: The conference's name. Really, who thought of that for a respectable international competition? Lame.

WOODLAND CONFERENCE
GOOD: In front of a raucous home crowd, the University of Ceni defeated Depri Sanar University by one point in a thrilling buzzer-beater finish; power forward Matthew Omega scored the winning blow. After that, they won their next two games with wider margins.
BAD: Uhh... maybe that they didn't beat Depri Sanar by a bigger margin?
UGLY: UCeni fans celebrated as the Bourgadîle Institute of Technology upset conference favorites Old Mountain University with a loud round of boos in their home stadium. Even though we were happy to see them lose, booing was uncalled for.

ROYAL CONFERENCE
GOOD: The University of Cenial has been walloping their opposition, going 3-0 with an average win margin of around 27 points per game.
BAD: They haven't been winning their games by 37 points a game: that's the average win margin so far of Cassadaigua's Rutland College. At that pace, they'll be UCenial's biggest competition.
UGLY: Only scoring 83 points instead of 93 in Banija? With a good record so far, it's hard to see any ugliness around.

BIG SEVEN NINE CONFERENCE
GOOD: Two dominating wins after a fluky loss on the first day of matches, a 23-point victory against Abilene Christian University and a 17-point victory against the University of Nortmer.
BAD: They'd be second, if not for one. curse word. point. Really?
UGLY: A roster with no talent, Froston University of Bendicion, managed to beat UNO. Which has a Cenian NT member, and a future NTer on it. Sad AND lame at the same time.

"Have you seen the news coming out of Sabinal?"

"No, why, is something big happening? Are they going to make Sabinal the Eternal Empire's capital permanently, has the rebuilding effort for the mainland been given additional funds? Come on out with it, you can't just walk into a room shouting if someone has heard the news and then not say what the news was when they have said that they have not yet heard said news!"

"Well if you would give me a moment to actually get a word in instead of just babbling about like a withering idiot, maybe I would be able to inform you of what is actually going on!"

"I am not an idiot! I just get really excited, okay?"

"Fine, whatever. Anyways, Sabinal has roads right, cause they are not part of Arossia, not part of Valanora's mainland right? Well, there was this car chase that happened really weird. This group of internet streamers were meeting for a convention there and one of the locals showed up and kidnapped one of the more popular of the streamers and jolted from the convention center. This crazy person then proceeded to drive backwards on the interstate before pulling off some video game sheningans and pulling the car into the right direction with some spinning action with their brakes, in the middle of traffic! Not only that, they then somehow managed to safely park their car inside a sportsbar and order wings from the place, before heading out before the authorities could show up!"

"That sounds absolutely ludacrous, are you sure you didn't hit your head on something?"

"No it's true, even weirder, is that another person showed up while they were at the bar with grilled meat and soda, got into the car, and the kidnapped victim was apparently the one who ordered wings before then getting back into the vehicle. Once the authorities finally caught up to them, they found out it was all a misunderstanding and that the trio actually knew each other and were quite late for an important community meet up."

"The world we live in is quite insane."

""Not quite as insane as the fact that Mar Sara Tech won the NSCF title last month and that the NSCAA conference play started last week, though Vanorian schools have not had a good start to it."

"Eh, that's normal though, they usually start slow before getting into the groove around the halfway point of the conference play."

Memoires d'Athletes

Those Around Me, and Who I Live For

Andrei Agontsev
VOLLEYBALL PLAYER / MONTREAL KOREANA

“Do not fear son, for every journey you embark on, there will be thousands who will be behind you. Those whose stars did not align, those who fell way before their time was to come.”

- Lighthouse, Jean-Sebastien Charest -

People often ask how I feel when entering the court. How it feels to play for the Koreana. How it feels to play for the Tricolour Taegeuk, how it feels to win the Bronze in Centralis. I always tell them that it’s because of duties that I have then and now that must be fulfilled, and that’s why it’s about my duty, as much as I do it for myself and my own joy.

It’s about living for those who left way before.

During my 3 decades playing and living through volleyball, I’ve played with and against many guys, and met many more in other sports thanks to our paths crossing. Often we shared our goals, aimed for our goals and seized the day. There were those who have won golds and got to be the flagbearer at the month’s end (Felix Kweon, what a discovery you were in Novonayan Gyms!), those who are Hall of Famers in their own sport (Kim Soo Myeon is a winner in everything life-wise) and many more of those who are successful with their lives.

But there were many more who failed to reach the goal, struggled with their issues and in some cases, left this earth way too early. I’ve known most of those who left way before in person, and am aware that no matter how much they suffered, and how close to me they were, their stories were meant to be remembered. perhaps this is why I’m writing them here. Take time as you open their stories :

You grow up in a quiet suburban neighbourhood of Quebec City, but not the one expected of a typical Novopetrogradian-Quebecois kid in National Capital Region. Instead of old, cramped houses in Centre-Ville or Levis, you grow up on apartment blocks along train tracks, the ones that go past you as you throw the rocks at them the minute they come by. Not the best nor healthiest lifestyle to live, but boy did it help you to spend time and throw faster and harder at moving objects.

Growing up, you’re never out of friends. From one block to the other, you would meet them before daybreak or after school to play any sport you can imagine with a ball you find at one of your or your friend’s places, and spend all day honing. You may be in trouble every so often, but at least, it’s fun times. It’s all fun and games until someone messes up their toe on the sidewalk, though.

Among those, you become best friends with one of them. The tallest but also the gentlest, you and the boy from Block A312 get along the most because you guys have what you want from each other, in a way that the one’s the missing puzzle to the other. You guys play footy and ball every day, and do each other’s homework and often get in trouble the very next morning because of very...obvious signs with your respective fonts. Not that it’s a big deal because sooner than later your font would be fairly identical to one and another, so this won’t be of an inconvenience as it would’ve been just weeks before.

You guys would grow up together, with your friend taking up football (or gridiron, if we’re not going to have that debate about which football is legit) and The life seems to be perfect in that regards, right? But, somewhere deep in your mind, you know there’s something wrong with your friend. The gentle-hearted, all-encompassing BFG you remember him of in grade 7 is no longer the one you remember him of. Instead he’s become totally different: Always unstable, changes his minds day by day. You notice that your other friends, those you meet in bigger settings of a prep school) take notice of your friend and initially try to be with him. It’s fairly natural for girls and guys to be attracted to him; Mick Jagger or not, who wouldn’t bang a tall, hot quarterback after all?

But they, when noticing that your friend has an ever-turbulent sea that could have them either be in century-long orgies or “not waking up before they go”, leave your friend- before they can get close enough to realise what he’s in. So you end up being his closest friend and probably the only ally he could find. Sure? That’s fine by you. Their sentimental and emotional depths are too shallow to take such dip, but at least you know you can and will understand what he’s going through.

So you do your best, take care of him when in need, and even take walks with him when you and your friend are both having your offseason (volleyball and gridiron are both played in fall semester here, for those who wonder). You let him tell you of visions and fears creeping up inside his mind, how he’s being chased by mysterious spies from both Ossoria and Shalum, and how he needs to check up on his neighbour’s cat to make sure that one’s organs do not contain such spying devices from either front. You also let him cry, let him have his cup of tea from your tea box, and most importantly of all, you let him have fun though.

In the end, however, your efforts fall short. One evening, you’re too tired to check Face-booke and overnight your phone runs out of battery so you don’t get to check the messenger at all. For once you decide to wake up early and have breakfast, but your phone is still turned off because your brother took the only phone charger in the household to work. So you go to school like usual so you could practice. But before you get changed, your teammates all hug you in the locker room. They’ve heard of the unfortunate news and can’t help but to feel sorry for you, the only friend he’s had.

Yeah, twenty years later, Jeremy Dufour is still in jail for murdering his neighbour while you were asleep.

You somehow manage to grow up well and attend university. You do well in school, are a star athlete and have a great time with your friends.

You know that summer's going to be great, but also the one with challenges. You are working at a day camp and what is there not to like about, for someone like you? But you also have to take care of a friend, whom he was having a very hard time at his summer job. He's a very talented guy, the one whose passion and love for the people is unparalleled, but due to unfair reasons, he was shafted to a ‘hijo de puta’ / shittier role at museum he was working at the time, so you had to console him whenever you and him would hang around with each other.

You guys both try to find your way through summer season, and it's not long before you guys almost finish your way through in July 11, right after finishing the holiday. Your friend files his two-week notice because he has to go back to Kingston, where a mountain load of family matters is waiting for him to read over and sign, but unlike this time last June, he is feeling mixed about the excitement of leaving. You can't help but to ask yourself what's changed with his mixed reactions, but decided that you'll find out soon.

He wonders, but it won't be for another half-month before you find out. Both have been way too busy with your own lives, so all that you could do is to look at pictures of your friends' colleagues and wonder if he's become a teen dad, a drug dealer, or whatever else he's become. You never know what's going to happen with him anyway. On the very night of his final day at work, he messages you that he's finally realised the reason. He, while both of you were away for a 10-day holiday, developed a sudden development of amity and sentiments for someone at his former place of employment. He asks you what the hell he should do. You, knowing how he needs to have a cooler head when it comes to those bar nights with colleagues at work, can't help but to just say enjoy the night, and take chance on the party he has before heading back home. You guys chat a bit more, exchange some pictures - including that of a beauty the girl is - and then call it for night's convo.

Two days later, the day has come. Of course your friend will call you, his body still intact after fun times with strippers you guys had the night before. You just tell him to calm down, stay sober and phone him when the moment is right. He thanks you and you hang up, hoping that the night will go well for him. It’s lot harder for your friend to tell his feelings to his girl, of course, because he’s always struggled to put right words when under pressure. So you, after a hard day of work, decide to take a nap.

He never responds though. And you are getting worried. But you decide not to do anything, because if you call on heat of the moment, it would be rude in general conventionality. So you decide to wait until the very next morning, when he’s on his train home, to talk. You find out that he failed his mission; not because she rejected him straightaway, but because of mistakes he committed. Your friend tells you, with a hoarse voice, that he drank and smoke way beyond his imagination, and that the girl left before his eyes halfway through. You would also found out that while there, he made calls to his colleagues for advice, which were heard with presence of his colleagues present at the party. Of course, because of those words, it’s pretty obvious that the girl knew his sentiments...without him telling on right time.

It’s that moment that hits you hard and square. You try to justify yourself of your decisions because you had your own matters in first place, but deep inside you know you screwed up because you weren't there when he needed your help. You blame yourself for those losses, thereafter, because you know how many he’s had to take in few years you’ve got to know him.

He talks to you a bit more, and then hangs up. You don’t hear his roar, but for one he cries and spends two weeks in despair. It can't get more evident when you see him the next time, and finds himself with self-inflicted wounds on his torso. You ask what the fuck had happened, to which he responds, "All's on me for that night." You can't help but to cry after you guys bid farewell, because you had known all along of his rejections, his losses and ultimately his failures. You guys still hang out, go to clubs and enjoy good night but his mind has changed too much to lighten up the shades in his face that covered his eyes, nose and lips.

Then, on the day you leave, your friend kisses you to bid farewell because he is embarking on a long journey. You ask where the fuck he is going, to which he responds with a grim smile. You tell him to come back and stop this madness, but there’s nothing left for him to do. It’s too late.

You don’t hear back from him again for 7 months. By this point, you’ve moved in with that love of his and her friends, without any particular intent. You only did it for cost and location anyway. One day you wake up, hear a noise from 3 cars right outside your window, and walk downstairs. You see the notifying officer and the chaplain in their uniforms, as well as a doctor in case the loved one faints.

“I have been asked to inform you that Sergeant Major Park Sang-Cheon, Royal Quebecois Marine Corps, has been reported dead in Maracaibo, Zulia, Nuevo Caracas at 0730 on August 21, 2025. He was leading his field unit on a stabilisation mission when he was faced with significant firepower on opposing front. While leading his unit, he was injured and after 12 hours of mixed consciousness, passed away. On the behalf of the Secretary of Defence, I extend to you and your family my deepest sympathy in your great loss".

You push your life forward five years later, and now you’re dating the same girl from Beolgyo because….yeah, you get tired of a free-flowing, Abel Tesfaye-styled lifestyle you were living under. In before your eyes you graduate and you guys both graduate, her spending one more year because of teacher’s college so in the end you guys graduate the same June. Before you know it, you are in pros, playing with the best and the craziest.

But sometimes life just gets at you further than imagined. Sometimes it's because of our decisions, like my friend Sang-Cheon, and sometimes it's because of the way things have been going, that condemns us forth and whatnot. That's what exactly happened to a friend of yours.

Later in life, you befriend a hockey player training in the same gym, eat in similar delicatessens, etc. He was an enforcer, playing with the best of hearts and meanest of fists. We call those in volleyball opposites, you call them in basketball Dellavedovas or Greens (I don't know why they are even named that) and of course you name those in hockey, enforcers. His name was Rocky Thurmond, for those who still remember him from his days with Canadiens, and he was the fighter. Playing both hockey and basketball all through college, he went through all the grunts and runts to make it big, and we all of course remember his days with Carleton basketball dynasty of 2010s. He wasn't like the Scrubb brothers who would go on to be big, but boy could he defend, block and most importantly get in others' heads with relative ease.

So h

But the changing dimensions of hockey and whatnot really left him out of a job in the big stage. So he was sent down to minors one day, emptied out his Montreal housing and then left, not to live in Montreal again for the rest of his life. I remember that saddening both of us, as he kissed me and my wife Tamara goodbye, before heading to Thetford Mines for his assignment.

By that point we knew his career in the QHL was over, so we still kept in contact. I do remember talking to him on phone and texts every once in a while. We still had our family picnics and hikes to keep ourselves in contact. Those days were not as fun as they used to be, but perhaps he wanted to settle a bit more....with both his outward concerns and the inward damages.

And then....he was gone. With a shot to the head.

One moment he was there, the next moment her wife calls us that he's dead.

What I am trying to tell everybody here is that mental health is something that we can't ignore. It is not something that we can set aside and be like 'oh well, what can we do eh?'. It is more than that and it can take those around us at any moment if not taken care of. Part of it has to do with people's decisions, part of it definitely on the way that our Guess we just have to find ways and work on it.

And hopefully, we'll see less lives lost like that.
