OOC : For those who wonder where the connection may lead into and how in the world does 'The Switch' have the slightest of connections to 'The Second Ring', remember the surname Kasaboski.

1990s : The Switch

Prologue

Philippe Ahn and William Yi have been best friends since their undergraduate years fencing for Queen's. Since then, they have gone their separate ways as Philippe established a new powerhouse in Carleton and William cementing his legacy in the perennial powerhouse USC.

Now, they are in their second year coaching respectively their second programs after a drastic switch of positions that landed William Yi at his alma mater and Philippe Ahn only kilometres away from his elderly parents. And of course they're bound to clash for the recruiting of one sabreuse who's bound to join either school - Charlotte Watson. They're certain she will arrive in one of the two, but which of the two?

----

Six Months Ago....

It was the very first day of Spring in Quebec. But, of course, it flurried in Gaspesie Peninsula.

Quietly, Philippe Ahn entered the street while trying to heat his own body from the spring frost that remained in the air. All the other suit jackets he had were currently on dry cleaning, so he was left with the one he owned since his early twenties. It was the graduation gift from his late maternal grandmother, who made sure they were red and flashy and everything a fancy gentleman she saw in her eldest grandson (out of only two). While he did not mind wearing this jacket, given its history to the woman she had respected and loved, there was a good chance it would have caused his potential recruits to possibly not take the lucre he offered on a recruiting trip.

But there was no time for any reconsideration of clothing, so leaving his small Perce apartment, only five minutes walk away from his elderly parents, was a no-brainer. He was already short of time and with the next train only available around noon, it would absolutely screw his recruiting trip to his familiar ground of Ottawa. One of the major destinations that he's travelled to in the past two years was his family still back in Ottawa, the fact that was only emphasised by the recruiting trips he still made for the club and school teams he coached in Mount Ross Secondary and Ahn Foundation.

Guess I do have many homes, Philippe Ahn said to himself as he dashed through the streets of Perce, an uncontrolled mix of traditional Korean houses with more modernised shop buildings. One of the downsides of having a downtown railway station in a small city is that often voitures and the pedestrians would be caught by the traffic lights and whatever there is of traffic in the morning. Philippe recalled very well of how in his younger years, he had missed at least 4 times for the train back to Quebec City (where he would often transfer to another train that would take him to Cornwall, Kingston or Ottawa). Fortunately enough, he made sure when buying his apartment to have it close enough to

Besides, he was a fast walker by this point of his training. Thus, it proved to be a no problem as he landed at a small, stone-built train station. He had arrived five minutes before the train's arrival time on 8:05. He was going to get to Quebec City by 14:30, and hopefully to his Epee recruit, Jean-Noel Borduas, at his place at 15:30, when he could surprise the family with an unexpected visit. It was not the most conventional of a fencing coach's recruiting tactic, of course not, but it worked. And that's where the beauty lied. And afterwards, he will depart to Ottawa and arrive home by 21:30, when his wife Lise and his 3 kids Yannick, Michelle and Laurent would be welcoming him home. Oh the joy of a March reading week.

----

"Thank you for the dinner coach," Joel-Lynn said to his fencing team coach, William Yi, as they were having a dinner in a buzzing, Italian restaurant just downtown.

It was the Tuesday Night Jazz in Berrè's, so it was going to be busy and all that in a relatively constrained space with red wallpaper, dimmed lights on the wall (just for occasions like this) and the wooden tables chained to make sure they were not going to be moved else they cracked. It wasn't the restaurant with best atmosphere in town - no way that would ever happen - but it was the best Ristorante in town and part of it was because of the events they had.

The longstanding Cornwall tradition, the Tuesday Night Jazz concert has been running since 1947, 5 years before the coach Yi (and his rival Philippe Ahn, whom we'll get to read more about down the road) was even born. Usually the tuesday night gigs were reserved for those of older musicians, some of whom William had the privilege of acquainting with each other back in his undergraduate days.

But tonight there was a concert by a relatively young, female vocalist named Janice Kasaboski, who was said to have made her return to Cornwall earlier this year. Aged roughly twenty five to twenty six, she mostly looked like she was still in her early twenties, though if you looked closer, one could tell that she's aged a little bit more than that in her facial lines.

Of course, that's not what Joel-Lynn had in mind, as he was struck in awe. He's already known her twin Eunice through work and he's seen her a couple of times on campus before the night at opera, but that was not the point. Joel-Lynn was still a nervous self when in presence of the other sex, and that showed as he struggled to eat and look at the same time. I have terrible memory and while I don't know her name no more, but god, she is a goddess descended upon this earth, he thought to himself as he stared at her as she was leaving the stage, before the intrigued look on Coach Yi forced him to quickly look back.

For a brief while, Joel-Lynn was worried that his coach caught him staring at her. It would have been totally embarrassing. But the coach instead just continued to speak. "Don't thank me, McCarthy. Thank Francisco the owner for keep running this tradition," Coach William responded, as he smiled at his student before chugging down a shot of vodka he had in a separate jar he brought outside in all occasions. "His father, Gianluca that blessed soul, started it, and he's just continuing from where he picked off. I know Frankie's disappointed Diane's not here, but I know he'll like you when he comes by. He knows I don't bring rascals here anyway."

"Indeed, thank you for helping out so much the past two years," Joel-Lynn said in mere appreciation, before proceeding to the sudden change in the topic. "Sir, is it fine if I may ask you a request?"

The Coach's eyes twitched slightly. "What is it? I am talking to you."

"Is it possible if I may ask for a special request to miss out on thursday afternoon practices for a possible choral ensemble practice in Swann Hall, if I may ask?" He asked, fear evident in his face. Coach William Yi, while a generous person, was also infamous to be hotheaded, and Joel-Lynn did not want to get on the bad side of his coach. "I know it's been a couple of years since I last spent singing and one day there was a change in mind, calling me back to the sound of music. I know it is a lot of commitment and you expect the same with the team as the Men's Sabre captain, so I'd like to make this request to you in advance."

"Mmmmmm," William quickly cleared his throat, before proceeding to speak. "If I were you I would take any possible opportunity you may be given," William Yi responded, just-finished cigarette in his ashtray still producing some smoke. "You are a sophomore, so how long do you have remaining here? Not a lot of time, if you ask me on that. I still remember how my thoughts about my wife had only occurred and solidified late in my junior year, and if it weren't for us both ending up in USC for Master's."

"Indeed, sir," Joel-Lynn nodded to himself, as he kept on staring at the vocalist standing in the stage. "Thank you for your generosity and whatnot. Without you I would not have adjusted as well."

"Speak for yourself, boy! Both Philippe and I love kids like you, always looking for more than just fencing," Coach Yi chuckled as he watched his star-recruit's face turn red. william Yi was never the one to run out of poking fun at his athletes, and the beauty of his situational humour always captivated the other athletes. "That said, you look awfully happy for someone who's had to handle the weight of being the team's ace so young. Is there someone special within the music program? Or is she someone of exquisite taste?"

That nearly caught Joel-Lynn offguard, as he tried to calm himself down and speak. "No, no, no, sir," Joel-Lynn responded in a hurry. "It's just I wanted to pick up where I had once left off and my friend, a former don of mine, recommended me to look beyond the options. And after working in the Annalise Swann (Hall) for a year, I felt like I wanted to do it again."

"That's a good friend of yours you have," said Coach William, as he slowly gobbled down the huge piece of chicken in front of him. "Such companions take you long ways. For me, she's the one I've been sharing the bed with for past two decades! For others, it can just mean lifelong friendships. They challenge you and because of that they last forever...."

THE ROCKET REPORT

DRAWKLAND SHOWDOWN UPCOMING

by Brianne Henry,

There has been some criticism from that tabloid in Loudon about The Rocket Report not showing the International Basketball Championships enough respect. Perhaps they have forgotten that we have a fully functional website and smartphone app that people can go to retrieve scores and exclusive interviews that you will not find anywhere else. Even when the Loudon Loudmouth tried to be the leader in coverage, their coverage was somewhat unprofessional in my opinion. They only slightly covered the Quinton Fayne incident, and have not provided a ton of insight for the team. That’s fine and all, but all their editors needed to do was go on our website or app. We know that many of you still have been, and we appreciate that. Following a shocking 77-73 win over Vangaziland, Newmanistan is heading to this big semifinal game.

We know that many Newmanistanians are focused quite a bit on the stock car racing series, so Vangaziland is a nation that we have come to know. They have been one of the best nations in the circuit, and are led by two-time winner Kev Schorebrook, and qualified two drivers into the chase, which is two more then Newmanistan was able to get in. On the basketball court, Vangaziland has been much better then Newmanistan as well, and we should remember them, as they were the runner up in the last IBC, that was hosted by us. They lost to Saint Kanye, just to throw in another NSSCRA reference. Saint Kanye turned their focus to motorsports, and are off to a good start in the chase (for 2 of their 3 drivers), so they are not participating in this competition.

As Newmanistan has become better in the IBC, they are beginning to give teams a harder time with their playing style. We saw that with Drawkland during the group stage, when the Rockets won a defensive battle, 59-58 over the enormous giants that Drawkland has. Vangaziland has some giants in the paint as well, and they are used to dominating there. The Newmanistan mantra? Let them have it. The Rockets have shown so much more confidence putting up shots from anywhere in the halfcourt, and when you are able to do this, the size mismatches on the inside are not as big of a deal. Opponents must do more then simply be bigger then Newmanistan, they must be more athletic and want it more. That said, Newmanistan does not put midgets in the paint either, and Travis Brown can tower over most as well. Brown has a bit of an advantage in that he knows when his teammates are going to put up a shot five feet after crossing the halfcourt line, or when they guards are going to try and set something up closer to the hoop.

Vangaziland was flustered by this. Newmanistan put up shots from just inside the halfcourt line on four of their first five possessions, and three of them went in. A quick 11-4 Rockets lead led Kate Foyelson of Vangaziland to call timeout and remind her team of the free-shooting style and tempo that the Rockets employ. You simply can’t defend us like you defend everyone else. After the timeout, Newmanistan played conventional basketball, and played even with Royals, leading to a 25-17 advantage before Parsons called timeout. After this timeout, they became the free shooting Rockets again, and went on another 11-4 run, leading 36-21 over the undefeated Royals, who had destroyed their group competition. Vangaziland recovered, and from that point, gradually chipped into the lead, but they would never get closer then 75-73 with 8.1 seconds to go. Two free throws by Jaylon Wright sealed the victory.

Next up is the third meeting against Drawkland, and the two have had tight matchups so far, with Drawkland taking the first game 77-75, and the Rockets winning the second 59-58. By now, the Net Corps knows they need to be more then just taller then us. We’ll see how this goes!

"Pre Semis"

Postby Drawkland » Wed Mar 21, 2018 2:49 pm

The time had come. The Net Corps all sat in the locker room, minutes away from running out the door and onto the floor of The Herzegovina Regional Transit Arena. How appropriate it was, really. Holding the semifinal, where both teams playing in it had played all their games in said venue. The classy wood-textured ceiling, the beautiful circular and symmetrical design, the huge atmosphere ... it had grown on the Drawkians. Reminded them of home, almost. But this matchup wouldn't just be any average group stage game the Net Corps and Rockets had run twice before. This rubber match would decide who would go on to contest for the title, against either Abanhfleft or Royal Kingdom of Quebec. Either one would be a menacing opponent for the Corps, but before that, they had to make it there. Newmanistan had to go down.

Head Coach Cody Morgan stared them down with his piercing gaze the team had grown used to in the past years. While in public and at practices he would simply wear a casual jacket, backpack, and a cap of some sort, he was dressed down in his usual black suit with a red tie. He'd been losing his hair in recent years, and now his head seemed to resemble a monk's.

"You know, I was at the DISC holiday party a few months ago," Morgan began, looking up at the ceiling as he remembered, "I had a long conversation with Michael Starre. I wanted to ask him what his secret was. You know those damn Kickers, always had so much success. Seemed like they pulled it out of their asses, almost."

A few of the players chuckled. Especially Gerald and Jazmin Madison, who were siblings with Katie Madison, the Kick Corps' star striker. They gave each other a knowing look.

"You know, even Quentin Averfel with the Grid Corps. Or any of those 8 coaches who simply dominate the NSCAA. Why do they always have such success, while we plateau at the round of 16 every year? I asked them all for advice. All the pundits seem to think I'm the best basketball coach on Sonnel, and yet, what do I have to show for it? We're the best the DBO has to offer, yet what do we have to our name? I felt like it was my fault, somehow."

"Hey, it could be worse, we could be baseball players," Brian Campbell offered to lighten the mood. More chuckles from around the room, echoing through the stone and metal construction of the walls and lockers. Even Morgan himself gave a small grin.

"I just wanted more for you all," he said, after a moment of gathering his thoughts again, "But they all told me the same thing. To believe. 'Sometimes fate drops a gift on your doorstep. And it'll either be a bomb or a trophy, but until you unwrap it, you just have to pray on it and believe.' That's what Michael told me. I dunno how effective believing will be, but it did remind me that I need to believe more in you guys.

"The blessings we've had up to now are phenomenal. Saint Kanye, gone. Vangaziland, now gone. Valanora, Ceni, gone. Yet we still have had hardships. We've earned this luck, don't you think?" Everybody nodded at this.

"The group stage match against Augusto del Sud comes to mind. Playing the hosts at home in Round 1 comes to mind. Having to play Ethane, our near equal in historical performance, who'd just demolished a team by 35 points and hung 103 on them, that comes to mind. And now we have Newmanistan, who I've done probably more planning on than any other team so far in this tournament. Having to play one of the best Pot 2 teams, really a Pot 1 team demoted because of the hosts being put in Pot 1, in the group stage, twice! You all deserve to be here. And you deserve more. Prove this to me, prove this to everyone, right here, right now!" his voice slowly raised until the end was nearly a shout. Slowly, everybody sitting on benches stood up, and they all crowded the middle of the locker room. Faintly, they could hear the sounds of the crowd cheering outside. It was nearly game time.

"Mary," Morgan said, looking around the faces in the huddle to the guard. She was 40, which is close to the Drawkian retirement age for basketball. While most star players usually hold out until they're 45, Mary Herriford was planning to retire early so as not to have a depressingly shitty final season from a drop off in skill. Plus, her Rejaka Wildcats won the Championship in the DBO for the first time in her career, so she wanted to leave on a high note. This would be her last IBC.

"Yea, coach?" she said. She was an emotional player, and was probably going to cry no matter the result of this game.

"You have one last game after this one. Do you want it to be for a bronze or for a gold?"

"Gold, coach. Definitely gold," Mary said with resolve.

"Hear that guys? Gotta go for gold then. Better win this one for Mary, alright?"

"Alright!" said Gerald Madison loudly, "Let's do it! Right here right now!" The players all gave a cheer. Smiles were on their faces. They could do this. They just had to believe.

MD3 against Newmanistan, DNSN TV broadcast

"And now the Newmanistanis have the ball. 35 seconds left, so unless they miss and get a good rebound, the Drawkians will have one last shot at this one. Tied at 75, and Atwood is taking the ball up the court for the Rockets. He's deliberating, chewing up all the clock. Closely guarded by Alex Jensen, but he's not looking to foul. Shot clock at 10 now. Atwood starts moving in, bounce passes to Connelly, Connelly ... passes it outside to Dwayne Murray! He's wide open in that Newmanistan 4-point zone, and goes for the three ....

He misses! What a rarity for the Rockets' sharp shooter! Gerald Madison with the rebound, and the Corps has under 5 seconds left to break the tie! Pass to Roxanna Abel, she takes it down the court with long strides. She's at the 3-point line and flings it up ... into the hands of Madison! Oh my god what a dunk! Alley-oop to break the tie and there's only a second left of play, the Rockets inbound and Murray shoots from halfcourt ... and it's off the mark! Drawkland wins!

What a play by the Net Corps to put themselves on top, wow! Great toss by Abel to get the ball away from the Rockets and into the hands of Madison ... and of course the finish by Madison to get the score. An amazing finish here in Banija, and boy you know there will be bad blood going into the second match between these two powerhouses."

MD8 against Newmanistan, DNSN TV broadcast

"Shot clock at 5 now, Trallen gets the pass, pump fakes, passes underneath to Roser, Roser takes the shot, and it's in! Drawkland leads 56-58, and Newmanistan takes their last timeout."

"The Net Corps may have a 2 point lead but there's still 12 seconds left. Plenty of time for the Rockets to comfortably set up a play in their court and get a shot in. And you know the range of some of these shooters, hitting from distances impossible for players outside of Newmanistan."

"They're so effective from the long range, and I think after seeing this the DBO might even consider following suit with their 4-point line ideas to foster that type of skill out of our players."

"Indeed. The teams are back on the court now, Jaylon Wright looking to inbound the ball. He's guarded closely by Campbell. He gets it in to Fayne, Fayne passes it around to Murray, who missed a potentially game-winning shot last time. Murray runs the perimeter, gets a screen from Fayne. Trallen rushes to block, but Murray is looking to shoot, a fade from downtown! For redemption ....

It's in!! Get out of town! What a dagger for the Drawkians, a 3-pointer to win the game, 59-58! Newmanistan takes it home, and the division is all but theirs. Drawkland is going to have an uphill battle to make the playoffs again this IBC.

Either of the teams will wish that their IBC journey would never end. However, for one of them, it will be the endgame.

Memoires d'Athletes

How we play basketball in Quebec

BYRON CHOO
POWER FORWARD / SEPT-ILES PROMY

21st of July, 2034

I'm glad Riley Jeon-Keane came back in time for the IBC 25.

Because now people will stop be pissed at me for not her not being back for yet another IBC.

Quebecois basketball's had a long, illustrious history on both men's and women's side. But it would be ridiculous not to acknowledge the fact that Riley Jeon-Keane is the greatest basketballer our country has ever produced. But here's the truth: Riley wasn't right on mind when I first thought of hotshot prospects. Heck, I didn't even heara lot about her until our high school senior year.

Riley had a few things that often the basketball scouts and coaches caught wary of, as they recruited her. She was too heavy. She was too lazy. She was Rada, rada, rada, rada. She made the last minute turnaround from Farrer to Queen's, something that also surprised the coaches. And this was at the time when the Quebecois women's basketball was just starting to see the flashes of our golden generation, the group that we saw finish in 5th and 4th place finishes the past two olympics and made their revamped return to IBC with their semifinal qualification. Dubois the Superwoman. Bertram the Wonder Woman. Ceciliani the Aquawoman. Paquet the Flash. (Sorry to So-Yeon and Celine, you guys are still great by the way). But Riley wasn't there when these girls started playing together in 2022. The A-Team did not have its Batwoman.

Riley was too busy with school, so she couldn't make the entry.

While there are more guys plying their craft abroad these days, most Quebecois basketballers go to pros only after their collegiate level. This is so that the players would get sufficient education before entering the workforce, whether as a basketballer or a professional. Like 98%, Riley stayed home. She played for the Queen's Golden Gaels, where she won way too many trophies and honours, and was the final push to their championship runs. Soon she got noticed by the national team and this time, she was going to stick forever. After a phenomenal performance with Kingston Enterprise and the 2024 Olympics, a scout from Drawkland brought her over to Drawkland to the Raikennax Lionesses.

By the time Riley came to Kelssek to join the national team, she was a different player. She was fierce, explosive and most importantly of all much faster player on floor than she ever was back in college.

And the rest is history. Before coming back to Quebec last year, she won 2 national titles, an MVP honour and captained the team for 6 out of 9 years she was in Drawkland. Not bad for the player whose commitment to the game was a question mark entering her college stage.

But enough about Riley - you'll see her in QBL once more.

To really understand where I'm getting at in terms of Quebecois basketball for both sexes, we have to take a look at how basketball is viewed, and hy their success is only making the sport better for those playing the game. Back in the 2010s, basketball was nothing more than a third-option winter indoor sport, a sport played by those who were awkwardly tall or just too short to go lateral ala. handball. There is much stronger tradition of hockey and volleyball, so those national teams would automatically get much higher expectations and attention. For instance, when the Quebecois women won the Gold for women's and Silver for men's volleyball, we all remember the fanfare they got. Everybody got into the streets and honked their horns, people were making love on streets...what else is there to say?

That's how much love hockey and volleyball got in Quebec.

For the basketball teams, it is a totally different universe of expectation. For example, when the Quebecois men's golden age placed in the 4th place of 2016 IBC, people were astounded over it, "Since when did they become that good all of sudden?" We were received very warmly. Of course, we only made it that far twice more, winning two more 3rd place finishes before Basketball Quebec's internal squabbles prevented us from fielding a legitimate team for almost a decade (IBC 22-24, if you do wonder). So we didn't really have the luck, as some would put forward. The dark ages of Vangazi-Kanyean basketball coincided right around then as well anyay.

That said, entering this IBC, we felt like the realistic goal for the IBC was making it to the Round of 16. That's all we wanted and of course, expeced. Getting beyond that was unrealistic, given how much men's basketball's gotten weaker here, while the women were somewhat in transition. Besides, we knew there were powerhouse teams that we struggled to beat in past- Ceni (their ascension came in time with our decline in rankings), Filindostan (they're the hosts and they were simply too good at shooting for us to forget) and Abanhfleft (whom we have never beaten in a series). If we could manage to break through the quarterfinals, it would be historic - in a different way because the circumstances were going to more difficult this time around.

But the craziest thing was and is (it's not over until it's over, folks) : Team Quebec made it to the semifinals and may even have more in line, depending on how lady luck plays out.

We truly shocked the Multiverse.

Long, long time ago, my mum played basketball semi-professionally. Those were the days when both Men's and Women's basketball leagues were semipro and gender-separate and it took a little me next to nothing to find out that she would work in a local National Farmers' Bank for six hours, come home to see us and then head to practice for 4 more. Often she would be out for days at a time to play some teams from East Coast or Manitoba, or even worse CSKA or Koreana. She would make enough money to have us with slightly better living, but not enough to make everything work given the housing prices in Val d'Or at the time.

So, watching her and my steeler father, me and my two sisters would grow to play many different sports. We knew our parents and their friends played for the love of the game, and we would practice how they were playing hockey, basketball, hunting, wrestling, or any other sport we could find. Nowadays it's harder to have kids roam freer because some schools are lot stricter about this, but that's what we would freely wonder around during our lunches, just outside our school walls and whatnot.

Then, at one point, I started practicing more basketball - even as my sisters moved onto hockey and cross country. Thirty minutes I had spent would become 45 minutes, to an hour, to 3 hours, and then to all night. Soon I would be able to beat my elder cousins and uncles and they knew my potential was getting there.

Back home, we would watch the QIS basketball games on cable channels (True North came just in time to broadcast more college sports games!) and take time discussing the pros- our 12-year old selves were not as engaged with pros. The concept sounded silly when younger. So we watched college game with voracity and had a good craic outta that.

That said, we were still yet to connect much to how the rest of basketball world. It was as if we were still on our small ponds when foreign kids my age or those in bigger cities would be able to watch more. But then television streams came to Quebec and changed our country forever.

The year was 2010, and it was a fun year. We saw Montreal Jets QB Ezequiel Sousa butt fumble against Gaspe Patriotes in RFL divisional round first and then the Sarnia Express win in a 4OT, 143-142 match over Val d'Or Grizzlies in a very surprisingly high-scoring QBL season opener. We both got absorbed in it, and would soon expand our horizons to basketball leagues we have not been able to watch before. Watching Valladar, Drawkian, Vanorian and Filindostani leagues allowed us to look beyond our regional leagues- and that helped the current and future hoopers to take a deeper interest. More and more, we started seeing some viability with our basketball talents, just enough to have them be noticed by those abroad, and that definitely worked well both ways.

Hockey is the national sport, and volleyball will be the one we do the best in. Both sports will never be exceeded by basketball for sure. But basketball's managed to take roots deeper than it has ever been. Well, part of it comes from what makes us play basketball and the other on how we play it.

First, organised basketball ends up being the only game in town. There is plenty of land in this country and people find enough space of their own to practice full court. So a lot of us, especially those from countryside like myself, practice, five-on-five, full-court basketball and learn how to play it as a team from the day 1. You see the results of this continuing to the school, pros and national team levels as we remember the Quebecois for playing a team-driven game.

Second, more importantly, Quebecois are passionate people. And I mean like real. Quebecois people are not just passionate about scoring and grabbing as many as possible, but take their pride in their progress as much as they can. We are proud people of many different regions and languages that we need to take time to understand each other. So, as a result, we have to be passionate about the process so we could understand each other.

As a result, we stay loyal to those we commit to, and look for best possible options out of what we have. In my case, it reminded me of how I climbed up the roster depth from Northwestern....

Oh! I never meant to brag! But I got him where I want him now!

Oh! It was never my intention to brag! To steal it all away from you now!

But God does it feel so good! Because I got him where I want him now!

And if you could then you know you would! It's gotta just feel so! It's a cutoff!
