The Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft is a massive nation located mostly off the coast and deep in the heartland of the region of Antarctica. A massive population of 460 million people call Abanhfleft home, and they live in all sorts of environments from the urbanized Capital Islands to the frozen tundra and taiga of Fleftic Antarctica to the deserts of Mezaladbyi and the mountainous forests of the Fhulghamous Peninsula. People are all over the religious, political, and gender spectrums, and attitudes for other cultures, ideologies and sexualities are for the most part open.

For most of its history, Abanhfleft has been a nation at war, constantly seeking to expand its territory. These "wars of conquest" lasted until the 1980s with the Fleftic invasion of what is now Verbergerkinnh Province, and Abanhfleft has since moved on to more peaceful pursuits such as international sport. A longstanding issue that Fleftic politicians have had to contend with until now is the Mezaladbyi Insurgency, a decades-long rebellion initiated by a mysterious figure known only as "the Colonel" and the detonation of a dirty bomb in the old provincial capital of Sleeping River.

Abanhfleft follows a democratic bicameral system of government but the huge size of the Fleftic Congress lends itself easily to bureaucracy, and even non-controversial bills that would usually be passed within a matter of months or even weeks could take years to go through Congress and the Senate. Abanhfleft's currency is the new penenk, with a fixed exchange rate of 3.50 new penenks per NS dollar. The new penenk replaced the old penenk in 2010 after rampant inflation saw the devaluation of the old penenk to over 10 million old penenks per NSD. Hotels and accommodation in Abanhfleft are expected to have good cheap prices for foreign visitors but watch out for local scammers seeking to make quick bucks off of gullible foreigners.

HANDBALL IN ABANHFLEFT
Handball is not the most popular sports in Abanhfleft. Let us leave it at that. Football, basketball, American football, and rugby union are the most popular sports in the country, but that doesn't mean that there isn't a substantial following for handball in the country. There are a number of regional handball leagues throughout the country, and there is currently a proposal in the APOC Coalition (Abanhfleft, Pridnestrovia, Oontaz and Copper Cuprum) to establish an international, multi-association handball league in the Coalition member states (similar to the Rugby Coalition for rugby union and the Coalition Rugby League for, well, rugby league). All stadia used in the competition are indoor arenas converted to handball-ready facilities.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT
NATIONAL HANDBALL TEAM

This is the seventh time that Abanhfleft will be participating in an international handball tournament. Handball is quite an obscure sport in the Democratic Republic, with no professional league established, and the handball department in the Commission on Sports and Games is occupied only by two men working out of a plastic table. But no matter about its obscurity within the country itself. Handball has got a few lifelong and die-hard practitioners scattered throughout the country, and the Commission has managed to get hold of all fourteen of them, along with a handball coach to lead them, and they are now about to embark on a journey to claim some honor for both their sport and their country once again. Now that the Democratic Republic has been chosen to host the Handball World Cup, expectations are now high for the national team to win something.

Since the era of HWC17 in RK Quebec, the Qasden Vans have proven to be one of the most intimidating newbies on the block. Debuting in the said tournament, TQ quickly gained a reputation after taking second place over Thatius and St Trinians. Last time, in Drawkland, the Vans bashed their way to the semifinals of the tournament's proper. Both times, their journey had ended with dismal defeats to back-2-back champions, Red Blackiland. However, a win over another fierce newcomer, Juvencus, in the bronze match of HWC18 has sparked a potential revolution towards Qad Handball. With Coach Mayward, AC Day, and Manager Sols returning with their group of elites, time can only tell the true champion of it all. Can Qasden's confidence lead them to their first handball title? Or will the HandVans yet again earn bronze? The grove runs deep, and only one path will be true to its name. Ladies and gentlemen, cats and kitsunes of the multiverse, here is your Qasden Vans for the 20th Handball World Cup, hosted by the nation of Abanhfleft!

Il nuova squadra a pallamano de Juvencus

Last version saw the gli attaccanti drop out of the group stages, with an abysmal 1-1-2, in the group stages, managing to get a victory over a singificantly weaker Sphnixatopd side and finishing second to last. That was a massive dropoff from their last appearance in the 18th version of the handball world cup, which saw the debutantes not only going unbeaten in the group stages, but also finish 4th in the competition and making a big jump through the rankings. This time, the squad is determined to achieve greatness.

The Journalist's Guide to Savojar Handball

HANDBALL IN SAVOJARNA

Handball is a very popular sport among young Savojars, and a lot of people, both men and women, play it in school. However, a lot of them are hockey players looking for an alternative to their sport in the summer, therefore many talented handballers get lost around 15 years of age because they focus on hockey. Savojarna has a professional handball league with 16 teams, most of them concentrated in Vestrholmen and Ejana. In Ejana, handball is seen as the regional sport and the island takes great pride in its team of EHK Storevik. However, due to the island's smallness and relative remoteness, most NT players come from Vestrholmen. In Sumanen and Russica Savojar, handball is less traditionally popular and has to fight for resources against rugby, floorball and volleyball. Nevertheless, the regions produce a few very noteworthy players, such as reigning MVP of the Savojar league, Savojagrad's left winger Pyotr Khabarov. Savojar teams are known for their unspectacular, pragmatic approach to handball, leading to a very tactically sound game dominated by the physical strength of most players sharpened through multiple seasons of ice hockey, handball, and formerly mining (even though that is not the case anymore since we professionalised the sport).

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Goalkeepers: The goalkeepers are relatively strong and should stop a fair share of shots. Bromstö is known for his great mental strength, while others may have more problems with this. Petter Jacobsson should definitely get some playtime, given that he has brilliant reflexes and is seen as the promise of future Savojar handball. Harald Nyborg plays his first HWC and is here mainly as a backup, he is not expected to play.

Wings: As mentioned, Khabarov is the MVP of the last season and has scored a lot of goals. He is known for a very strong shot and speed. Watch out for this young guy on the side. His replacement is the youngest player of the team, Nils Jensen. He has shown a great ability to make good shots even when pressured heavily and possesses a lot of physical strength. On the right side, Ville Jokarinen will start. The Virkaja guy is very explosive and has a capability of breaking through any defense by brute force. His replacement, Victor Gulbrandsson, is one of the two debutants on the national team and shows a promising season in the domestic league. He has a good overview and a dangerous arsenal of tricky shots.

Centers: Center forwards Fridtjof Lindback and Robin Ljungberg can be used almost interchangeably. Both are very strong men and hard to get out of balance, and both of them have a tendency to shoot from situations in which a good shot is unexpected, scoring many sneaky goals like that. However, sometimes their attempts to score hinder the team's efficiency if they miss a better placed teammate. The backs Alexander Pedersen and Mika Peltonen are more different, with the younger starter Pedersen being more qualified in offense thanks to great overview. Peltonen, on the other side, is seen as the stronger defender, which will likely lead to some strategic substitutions shall the game require it.

Backs: Left back Asgeir Jonsson is easily the backbone of the team off the pitch. The captain is a natural leader, and a strong defender. This allows his counterpart in the starting 7, Mikkel Nielsen, to be more active and more offensive, which leads to many goals for Savojarna. His backups are Bengtsson and Baldersson, a pair of fast backs known for their overview and passing skills, which can be very valuable if additional offense is required. Mikkel Nielsen is especially dangerous in offense and leads the SHL in goals scored by backs, even though he also knows how to stop an opponent. His strong shot has scared many goaltenders, and gave him a unexpected crown of best scorer in his team in the past. Denis Bjarnsson, his replacement, will probably not play too much given Nielsen's importance, but could play an important support role in carrying a lead to the final whistle.

Hungry for Handball
with Aisling Keane

So Abanhfleft is finally hosting a Handball World Cup. Good for us. Only good things can come out of this. Famous last words.

But seriously though, maybe hosting the Handball World Cup could very well be the boost that handball needs in this country. Yes, I know that there's talks going on about establishing a Coalition-wide handball league like what the APOC did with rugby union, but frankly I don't see that Coalition Handball League (if that is going to be its name going forward) is going to have the same level of success here in Abanhfleft as the Rugby Coalition has in regards to the sport of rugby union. That's because the Coalition leagues' model is to target four cities in each country in which to base the league's teams, sometimes without regard for the actual development of the league. More often than not, it's just a matter of who has the deepest pockets that they can keep throwing at the league.

Sorry about that rant right there. I love the Rugby Coalition, don't get me wrong, but it's very much clearly a business model first and foremost and a sports league a close second. But back to handball. Hosting a Handball World Cup will definitely help to develop the sport more than any sport of APOC league could. First of all, the Fleftic Handball Association decided to host the games in the Capital Islands, where there is sure to be a lot of people who are going to be curious as to how this whole handball thing goes. The Fleftic people will also turn out in droves to support their national team no matter what sport they play.

Let's be honest, handball hasn't had a lot of love in Abanhfleft. Basketball is king of the indoor courts in this here country with ice hockey a very distant second, and that newly established arena football league an even farther third. There are a number of semi-pro and amateur regional handball leagues with leagues forming and folding at almost a regular rate everyday. A successful Handball World Cup may just be the thing to stabilize these leagues and (hopefully) lead to a stable national league of our own. A Fleftic National Handball League, so to say, and not just one of those Coalition leagues. Now wouldn't that be something? A league to call our own, and not to share with anyone else. (Not that I'm slamming the Coalition once again, but I just prefer one league per country and leave it at that.)

So does this mean that handball is due for a resurgence in popularity in Abanhfleft? Pretty much so. But we have to be careful with this as well. We don't want the handball team to end up like the baseball team. The Abanhfleft Revolution was so hyped up when it got second place in the sixth edition of the now-defunct International Baseball Slam that everything else after that was just a mere disappointment, and the Revolution then became a self-fulfilling prophecy of guys (and gals, remember Julie He and Ulrika Zimmermann) who would do enough to get by but not enough to truly excel and set themselves above the rest. And we can't let the same thing happen to the handball team if we want to keep succeeding and winning. Besides, that's all we want, right? Winning?

Anyway, that should be enough editorializing for me today. In a few hours, the 20th Handball World Cup is finally going to kick off at none other than the Fleftic Arena and boy, if the early attendance figures is to be believed, the handball renaissance has finally come to the Democratic Republic. Looks like the people of Abanhfleft are hungry for handball, after all.

After a very close match, the Quantilian Falcons lost a heartbreaker to Northwest Kalactin 28-29. Despite a valiant effort by Amos Long and Richard Everett, who are teammates on Quantilia City Athletic Club (QCAC), NK just beat us out. Next week, we better watch out for Drawkland. They beat the USAR (Alpine Union) by 4 points, and they are routinely very good at tournaments like this. Go Green-and-Navy!

Handball: Costa de Ouro upset by Vakolicci upstarts
Monday, February 19, 2018
Story by Aleixo Roberto Gomes

After six straight World Cups of making the final, Costa de Ouro suffered a shock defeat to Vakolicci Haven and Celeria in the first game of the twentieth Handball World Cup held in Abanhfleft. It was certainly a disappointing performance for the new team of coach Albert Costa, although it was the team's first time playing a competitive international match together.

Vakolic certainly weren't one of the best teams in the world heading into the match, and by all means, most were expecting them to lose by a large margin to the Costenho team, with their handball pedigree of 7 Handball World Cup podium finishes and two Olympic gold medal finishes in the women's event. They, along with Red Blackiland, consisted of a duopoly at the top of international handball for a good six cycles, with the team from Esportiva emerging the victor in their head-to-head record, winning the last three Handball World Cups in the final against Costa de Ouro.

With the departure of Red Blackiland from the international sporting scene, the Costenho team were hoping to restore their dominance with another title in new host Abanhfleft. But the road to that title looks rockier with this first loss to the relatively unknown handball team from Vakolic, more well-known for an incident in the Summer Olympics a couple of years ago relating to their feud against Gregoryisgodistan. In fact, they didn't care enough about handball to bother disseminating a roster to the international community or placing names on their jerseys. But Costa de Ouro was also without the team that had soldiered through those six World Cups: most of them were in their late thirties, so Costa was forced to pick an entirely new team to send to Abanhfleft. That would prove problematic for the Costenhos.

It was the first half of the match that really did the Costenho team in, with mistakes on both the defense and offense galore. Their performance seemed disconnected, with no teamwork; the team seemed like an amalgamation of seven individual players, unable to work together. Errors crept in: zonal defense and man-to-man defense seemed to vanish, while the offense missed the mark by a large margin too many times. Costa was enraged at his team's performance: by the time half-time came around, the Costenho team was down 18-8, a monstrous deficit to make up in the second half.

In the second half, it appeared as if the Costenho team had regained its bearings and started to work together as a team once again. The combination of Mário Demétrio Duarte and Octavio Bonaventura on the defense started to work out, while pivot Nico Soares and left back Áurea-Vera Costa proved to be a passing monstrosity. Unfortunately, the team's newfound energy and coordination was unable to make up for the lack of those things in the first half: although the comeback was real, as they won the second half 14-9, it wasn't enough to overcome their first-half deficit.

Coach Costa was disappointed, as expected. "I hoped that we had found a winning combination to get back to the top of the Handball World Cup again, but it appears that this isn't the case. We'll certainly have to find a way to improve our teamwork to get the best out of this team." Still, he remains hopeful that they can come back from their defeat. "Often, these kinds of results are the catalysts to produce a good performance. I hope it can be a catalyst to produce a good performance here, too."

A Force of Destruction: Mikkel Nielsen shoots out Ethane

This afternoon in Abanhfleft, Mikkel Nielsen had the match of his life as Savojarna opened the 20th Handball World Cup with a 31-16 demonstration against Ethane. Savojarna had never missed the KO matches in their previous HWC appearances, but they also never progressed past the quarterfinals, being kicked out by now-retired former world champions Red Blackiland the last time. The first match against Ethane, a sporting power with a good tradition in many sports, was expected to be a tricky one, but that was before Mikkel Nielsen showed his insane form he has at the moment. As the match began with the first Ethanian attack, the back had managed to intercept a pass and launch a quick counter via the fast winger Pyotr Khabarov, and the SHS MVP smacked the ball into the net as he had done so often in the past season for his team. Savojarna even managed to go ahead 2-0 before Ethane got their first shot, as the other back, Asgeir Jonsson, stood like a rock against Ethane's centre forward. While the hall was still resonating from the brutal hit, Savojarna countered again and as Lindback loaded off to Jokarinen, the man from Virkaja set the score to 2-0.

If you think that Savojarna was all about the counter attack today in Abanhfleft, you would be mistaken. Goals were scored in all kinds of fashion - beautiful combinations like the 6-2, when three quick passes were finished with a high pass by Mikkel Nielsen over to Gulbrandsson, who caught it out of the air and shot it into the near corner; explosive jump shots like the 8-4, a hammer by Jokarinen; the 11-5 which was a pretty tricky lob by Lindback over the Ethanian goalie; and finally also per penalty like Khabarov's 13-7. At half time, our boys were already up by nine, with the score being 19-10. The team now fell back a little, and Bromstö got a break in goal as Petter Jacobsson took the net. In the second half Khabarov, Nielsen and Jokarinen were mostly rested, with Jensen, Bjarnason and Gulbrandsson taking over for the majority of the game. Robin Ljungberg also got quite a bit of play time instead of Lindback and scored a beautiful goal for the 28-14, a shot off the spin after he lost balance in a collision with a defender.

While the whole team was brilliantly organised and rolled all over Ethane most of the time, there was one man shining in particular. Mikkel Nielsen of Sjoedrhavn, playing for Vulkan Kjefla, scored a total of five goals, the highest number of the Savojar back line, and eight assists. This means Nielsen had a role in a majority of the goals scored while he was on the field, cementing his status as possibly the best handballer in Savojarna and part of the best in the world. Rumours of Nielsen moving abroad circle the news yet again, and while his team keeps denying that there were any negotiations, it is hard not to acknowledge the strong case Mikkel Nielsen makes for any team that is interested in the aggressive right back of Savojarna. Not only is he a great scorer, Mikkel Nielsen also provided multiple valuable defensive actions against the Ethanian offence. He was justifiedly chosen by the fans on our website as Savojarna's Man of the Match, and we hope that he can carry this team further down the line against Devonta and Humaliwo, who drew their match later tonight with 24-24. We got to speak with Mikkel after the game.

SavojarSports: Mikkel Nielsen, you scored 13 points in a single game without even playing much in the second half. Was this your perfect match tonight?

Mikkel Nielsen: I don't want to say perfect match - there is no such thing as a perfect match. But it was a great game, I just hit it off right from the start. The audience here was great, and there are even some Savojars around here despite the Winter Olympics, I guess they're not all in Prescott. The Fleftics are also a great audience though, very fair and very enthusiastic. This atmosphere reminded me of home in Kjefla, and it just carried me. There was also some luck, some bounces that went our way and one or two mistakes by the Ethanians that usually wouldn't happen to them I guess. It was a great game, but it wasn't a perfect match I think.

SavojarSports: Do you believe that there will be another match like this against Devonta and Humaliwo, or will it be harder from now on?

Mikkel Nielsen: I'm sure that these matches will be tough and require our concentration, just like today. Don't think that we won in training mode because we scored 15 goals more, this was concentration that was required. But I mean, we will probably win against them now. We are on a great run, they aren't - we are the favourites. But that means that they will be double motivated and fight for their lives, let's not get too cocky here.

SavojarSports: Which opponent do you fear most, or look forward to the most?

Mikkel Nielsen: I don't fear anyone. I guess we hope not to meet Costa de Ouro too early, they have a history, but look what happened with them and Vakolicci. They are not as good anymore, the world saw, and the world won't be scared of them anymore. The world won't be scared of Red Blackiland cause they aren't here. Quebec struggled, the Drawkians aren't dominant, Juvencus already lost a match - this could be our year, so we gotta beat them all anyway! But I hope to play Juvencus. After what happened in the 77th World Cup in football, these boys are pissed. It would be a very special match, and we'd all be hyped up for it!

SavojarSports: Thank you Mikkel for this interview. Is there anything you'd like to tell the people out there?

Mikkel Nielsen:
You guys rock! Everyone who watches us and not the Winter Olympics, we love you. Keep up the support, and GO SAVOJARNA!

Northwest Kalactin won by a goal in the handballl match against quantilia 29-28 by a goal from forward mark Gonzalez with 19 seconds left this goal was very important in the win for Northwest Kalactin due to its timing, because there were only 19 Seconds left it would be harder for quantilia to strike back with 2 goals to win the game other important plays from Northwest Kalactin were a save by goalie Anthony Taylor, and a amazing play by player frank Torres, Amos Long was passing it to fellow quantilian Neil Vernon but in the middle of the pass Torres caught it although he had caught the quantilian team completely by surprise there was still a defender, Richard Everett and not just that Amos Long was catching up to him the current score was 13-11 Northwest Kalactin so frank knew it was going to be ba hard play to make he did it Long, who was very fast had completely caught up to him while juking Everett he also dodged Longs attempt to grab the ball from him, then he threw it into the net and scored for the next few minutes after that the quantilian team went on the attack making 4 straight goals before the kalactanian team finally scored a goal despite this the Northwest Kalactanians still won the game in a close one we are hoping that the kalactanian team keeps playing like they just did.
