National Conference Review

Now in its 13th season the mixed gender National Conference finally has a champion that is not Crusaders, Great Northern RR or Haskins Blues, as Lima City United ran at or near the top of the table for the majority of the campaign.
The Light Blues took a page from their cross town rivals North Lima, developing a stout defense to lead the league and bring home the club's fourth trophy, after the men won the FAC Shield in 1991, and the Lima United women won the 2nd Division in 2007 and the FAC Women's Cup three seasons later.

Playoffs (all four clubs promoted to the 3rd Division)
1st Leg
West Chester FC 2–1 Valley View SC
New Harmony FC 3–2 Western & Southern RR FC

2nd Leg
Valley View SC 1–1 West Chester FC (West Chester win 3-2)
Western & Southern RR FC 2–0 New Harmony FC (Western & Southern win 4-3)

Final (BBP Stadium, Belle Haven att-33,184)
Western & Southern RR FC 2–0 West Chester FC

Western & Southern RR win the FAC Shield in style, sweeping past division rivals West Chester at the BBP National Stadium. It was a rematch of the Final from seven years previously, which saw West Chester win their second title.

For W&S, it's their first trophy since 1924, and just the third in the club's 140 year history; charter members of the FAC and one the five oldest clubs in the nation still in existence, the Yardbirds were the winners of the inaugural 2nd Division crown in 1910, and the second winners of the FAC Trophy, but this will be the fourth time in 12 years they've been promoted since the expanded Shield format came into use and each of the three previous times they were relegated after just a single season.

Commonwealth Broadcasting Corporation Channel One
National Soccer Night Special Edition

the final minutes of time added on in the 2nd Half...
(ambient crowd noise with various video feed cuts of the crowd in the stands, juxtaposed with the action on the pitch where the team in all-white are keeping possession of the ball)

Craig Snyder: "they've defied the odds, overcome a schedule stacked against them, silenced doubters. When the stakes were highest they re-affirmed the adage that 'form is fleeting but class is permanent' over 24 matches."

Mark Tolbert: "It has been a two legged tie that was near the top of the bunch for the potential of an exhibition of aggressive, technical offensive soccer; it will be certainly remembered as the Serena McDavid show after she scored three times over both legs to secure...

(audio of the final whistle and crowd celebration, with numerous quick cutaways to crowd reactions and on-pitch scenes.)

MT: (approximately 75 seconds after being cutoff) to secure a 14th straight berth in the World Cup Finals. Craig, did I go into a deep sleep or have we been transported into another dimension?"
CS: "Neither of those choices." (both laugh)
MT: "The Baker Park National Team have defeated Drawkland here at the BBP National Stadium by a final score of 4-3 and winning the tie 7-6 on aggregate to advance to the World Cup Finals; 73,264 spectators saw the Bees extend their qualifying record to 14 straight from their debut, but whether Craig and I were among that total will have to be determined after our random drugs test...back to you David Blake."
David Blake: (background studio laughter leaving Blake a bit thrown off) "Thanks Mark and Craig. I guess 'good luck' is in order...Aiden Donnan, your turn." (laughter)
Aiden Donnan: "Well, Gary...we thought Jen got the upper hand in Sadeg with her starting lineup and shape they played. Did she outdo herself tonight?
Gary Kostka: "Absolutely, because it really was the flip side of the same coin. I think tonight was the culmination of 2 years of tinkering, experimenting, testing different combinations. A win for the ages."
(now voice over with the post match images from the pitch)
DB: "There seemed to be a a lot of emphasis on the theme of ghosts for this doubleheader, right down to the wearing of the Ghost Whites kit tonight."
GK: "With Black socks!"
AD: "Of all the things I've seen, that might be the most surprising of all. Jen subtly stressing the 1000 games, the history. It's not been a glorious history but we've had our moments."

Season Review
It was a banner year for clubs in the southwest of the Commonwealth, as Ezriquay United won the National League Championship, Newport City won the 2nd Division and were runners-up to Linden Woods in the National League Cup, Bridgend Metros captured the 3rd Division title, and both Shiloh Ladies & West Alden United were runners-up in the FAC Women's Cup and FAC Trophy, respectively.

The Commonwealth's third most populous state boats 24 clubs across the pyramid, plus 6 of the 20 Women's National League members so they take the game quite seriously.

In the Championship, United captured their first title in 20 seasons, ending New Bremen's three year reign, with Asbury Park, Dalton Town, and Clayton City in the chasing pack along with United's crosstown rival Midtown Athletic Club; Brem could've snuck into the final Challengers Cup spot with a win on the final day but their lack of firepower consigned them to sixth.

In the WNL, Sherwood Forest Ladies made a surprise U-turn after losing their top scorer Alicia Craig and long time Manager Patricia George to retirement and passing the reins over former NT star Faith Enzikomibo, who promptly led them to a sixth title in seven years with the stingiest defense in the league. Jamestown City and Clayton Ladies were expected to return to a three team race with Newmarket as they had a season earlier, but with the Little Janes not having IFCF competition to contend with, they swept past the field.

CBC1 broadcast, World Cup 93 Final. Straton, Tumbra

Mark Tolbert: "We are well into stoppage time, the finale of this World Cup that has seen so many incredible storylines and has brought us to the first post-Foxchester AO-Anaia Final, it has been a classic not soon to be forgotten..."

(final whistle)

MT: "Banija are the Champions! They've captured their second title with a masterclass performance against an equally brilliant Chromatik side that are second best on the day by a razor thin margin."
Craig Snyder: "Pamela Scott has forged this generation of the Kadongo Kamu in her own image and has earned the crowning achievement she deserves. Well done to her."

MT: "For the second straight World Cup, a Baker Park native has led a nation to the biggest prize in the sport. Gary Kostka, Ady Donnan, Will Bernard, David Blake back to you as we say so long from the Eagle's Club in Straton, where Banija have triumphed 4-3 over the Anomalies of Chromatika."

David Blake: Mark, Craig, we thank you as always. Ady Donnan, Gary Kostka, Will Barnard here. Will, let's start with you.

WB: "It was a fabulous contest from beginning to end. I know Pam probably cherishes this win as much for the way her side performed as for the actual result. Kate took a more utilitarian approach with Zwangzug but Pam is a classicalist and wants to win while her team looks good doing so, although she just wants to win above all else."

DB: "Ady?"
Gary Kostka: "Oh boy here we go" (laughter)
Aiden Donnan: "I'm thrilled for Pam, as much as I was for Kate last time. I don't think I even need to mention that I've known she was the best in the business" (laughter)
DB: "Gary, last word before the break."
Gary Kostka: "It's been another amazing tournament that has ended with one of own coming out on top. Congratulations to Pam on a well deserved win."

DB: "We'll be back after these messages"

Fleming plays it coy on NT search
by Mindy Cartwright, National Soccer Editor

FAC Executive Director Steven Fleming met with the core National Team media at the association's State Street offices in Belle Haven ahead of the Finals of the World Lacrosse Championship 42 to discuss the near term plans for the National Team in the wake of the resignation of Jennifer Prescott.

Fleming began with a tribute to the Commonwealth's all-time winningest manager and his personal feelings about the changes.
“We all owe Jen a profound debt of gratitude, as she has been at the center of the FAC's continued success over her tenure. When I arrived we'd just won AOCAF 66 and I thought everything would be sunshine and happiness. No one said there would be days when you actually had to work and sometimes confront difficult circumstances.

The structure that Dave Carlson established and evolved over his time as Executive Director means we are not heading off into some unknown territory or flying blind into a restructuring of the broader Charter organization; we have a deep, experienced team of men and women who have been here for a long time and understand the management of the Technical and Player Development Departments and the current state of the association.
One element that has not gotten as much attention as it should is that we are producing certified coaches, physios and officials in record numbers these days, with the number of coaches coming in from other nations to do courses in our program increasing year by year as well as the numbers we send overseas for the same experience.”

Fleming was asked if there was a higher priority on hiring a new Technical Director or a National Team boss, which he referenced back to the period following Pam Scott's departure.
“When Mr Tuzzio came in, the issue of whether the TD and manager needed to be the same person was settled pretty quickly. I think what we will focus on is the on-field management, and then organize the directorships in a way that best suits the new boss.”

Among questions raised were several pertaining to candidates and attempts to pin down specific potential names.

The first high profile name brought up was former Starblaydi and current Mertagne boss Ázëwyn Fëanáro.

“I know Jen joked about it during the playoff, but we have never made an approach, nor would we as she is--as far as I know--still under contract. Even if a situation would present itself that she would be available to take another position, I think we would want any discussion to be a result of an external inquiry.”

Obvious top of the list names were also ruled out. “I couldn't imagine a scenario where Pam (Scott) or Kate (DiMarini) would leave their current situations. I think they both might end up with their faces on currency someday. (laughter) At least maybe a postage stamp. But we have been absolutely working on the assumption that they are non-starters.”

Other potential overseas applicants or those expressing a passing interest got the most general consideration. “We've received about 12-15 requests for further info on the application process and another 10 packages that meet our requirements for the first phase. We would not discount any candidate from outside Baker Park.”

Current Senior Team staff brought about a different tone. “It's premature for me to make any statement either in confirmation or denial about the four members of the coaching team. Hypothetically, yes they each will or would be given an opportunity to present a case for their selection.”

The discussion turned to former staff who were no longer part of the FAC but warranted consideration based upon their accomplishments. “We won't comment about Shane (Newman) as he is under contract to Indusse, if the permissions are worked out then we will be open to answering questions. No I did not have any contact personally or indirectly with Will (Barnard) when he was in town to do commentary on CBC, nor did anyone else from the FAC that I'm aware of. I don't think I've spoken with Zoe (Montgomery) in six months or more, maybe someone else has.”

The final discussion was about current or former National League bosses and what someone from outside the NT setup would have to bring.
“You guys want me to alienate my entire social circle, I see. (laughter) I'll answer the question first from my own perspective as an ex-club boss. At a club, you're involved in a lot of the business of the sport and you really aren't ever in a quiet period or holiday mode. Even though there is a lot of responsibility away from the day to day running of the squad, National Team management in Baker Park can have some periods where it's not necessary to be in the office every day. A lot of meetings where topics are far away from basic training ground coaching. I would absolutely welcome any manager in the National League or the Women's National League to submit their name, please get hold of me to find out the things we'd like to have from you in an application package. I don't think we'll never see another national team boss come from club management, maybe we just need to find the right person.”

Asked if the decision would be finalized prior to the Jenna Raven Cup or the AOCAF, Flemming was circumspect. "I don't think with the current staff we have beyond the regular NT coaching group that we would rush things just to have someone in place by the start of the JRC. We would definitely look at the regional as starting point for a new boss to take over and work with the pool."

Three left to vie for Prescott's job
Scott McCrae
The Daily Mail Chief Soccer Writer

The search for the next manager of the Baker Park National Team has been narrowed down to three final candidates who are familiar names to the Football Association of the Commonwealth and to those with a knowledge of the coaching setup during the mixed gender era.

Darren Kirby, Will Barnard, and Zoe Montgomery have been instrumental in the rise of the Commonwealth, working closely together in the Under-18 & Under-21 team successes under Trevor Richmond and Pam Scott; they consider one another close friends and each have paid their dues in preparation for taking on the challenge of one the top managerial jobs in the multiverse.

Kirby should be the favorite, as he's the incumbent assistant manager and has been with the organization continuously since before mixed gender in addition to having the AOCAF 66 title to his credit.

Barnard & Montgomery left the FAC at the same time to set out on their own paths in club management and have had measurable success along the way; Barnard has led Gunzlach in Graintfjall to four Championships and four runner-up places in the league along with four Cup wins and three other semi-final berths, while Montgomery steered Bakermouth in the Euran Overseas Territories to seven top 3 league places with one title win and a pair of Expat Cups with 3 other semi-final appearances.

Sporting Director Liam Sullivan said that any one of the finalists will be a fantastic national team boss as they each have shown their adaptability and put their personal touch on the roles they occupy currently.

“I think if you saw how Darren ran things when he was in charge (AOCAF 66), there were differences to how Jen operated, differences to how he did things in the 18's. Same is true with Zoe as her teams (in EOT) don't play like the 18's squads she ran here, they don't even play a system that has much connection to our scheme. Willie was a catalyst in more widespread use of three at the back in Graintfjall's league by other clubs, but his recent sides don't look anything like the way we play in terms of style. Even Kate and Pam have a clearly divergent tactical philosophy at this point, which is a sign of how they adapt to the personnel they have at their disposal.”

It's unclear if the full FAC Board will make the decision, or simply ratify the choice made by Executive Director Steven Fleming, General Secretary Allison LeFleur, and Sullivan; the status of who will lead the women's team in the upcoming Jenna Raven 4/Women's World Cup 17 is also a topic that seems stuck in limbo.

Sullivan added that there will be a major restructuring of the entire organization at Birkenfeld, mentioning three already confirmed changes: Ryan Zavaros will take over for Tony Weiss as Director of Scouting, with youth staff coach Thomas Jones moving into the position of Director of Coaching Development, and former National Team Staff Coach Hailey Reinhart-Zavaros joining Michael Haddad in the Training & Sport Science office ahead of a transition to her taking over the leadership upon Haddad's retirement after the end of the World Cup 94 cycle.

"This is a move we've discussed for awhile, as it allows Ryan to help out more with the kids while Hailey does some post-grad work along with learning the ropes from Michael. TJ will have come full circle from being a graduate of the Pro Coaching course to putting in extra time alongside his youth team staff duties to assist Ryan to now running the program, which was supported by his fellow coaches enthusiastically. We have always tried to utilize the people we have in the Development Scheme in the areas they fit into best, and TJ is a natural leader, teacher and communicator, the attributes we want in someone training future coaches."

Late show brings Montgomery back
by Mindy Cartwright, National Soccer Editor

An unusual twist in the search for the next manager of the Baker Park National Team has narrowed the list of candidates to two after the Football Association of the Commonwealth announced late last night that Zoe Montgomery had been named Director of Technical Development, as well as Assistant Manager under whichever of the two remaining finalists is chosen.

Montgomery resumes the role she held when Ichi Tuzzio was NT boss prior to her departure to manage EOT club Bakermouth, in addition to the responsibilities that come with the number two field management job. The combined position will be similar to Jennifer Prescott's function after Montgomery's departure and prior to her stepping into the top job after World Cup 87.

Montgomery released a brief statement with the announcement, with her introduction scheduled to for the same time as that of the new manager.
“I want to thank the board and the supporters of Bakermouth FC for their support throughout my tenure with the club. I will always regard my time there as one of both profound professional and personal growth. My only regret is not being able to bring the club more success, but I will always keep a place in my heart for the city and the people there. I am honored to be able to return to Baker Park to work once again with the national team and to work along side Steven, Ally and my great friend Liam. We will strive to build a team that the nation can continue to have pride in and to return to the heights we achieved during my previous time here.”

The Technical Director's role has evolved over the history of the FAC, from being the most important & powerful job in the organization to its current status as the person that coordinates the direction of the Development Charter Plan; Montgomery has been an instrumental part of the Technical staff since before mixed gender (as has Will Barnard, if that counts for anything) and has her experience at Bakermouth & as Under-17/18 boss under Pam Scott and Trevor Richmond—in addition to the rest of her resume at Birkenfeld--to bring to real time decision making as NT Assistant Manager (and likely Women's NT boss) despite the whispered criticism that she's neither a tactician nor a Kate DiMarini-type 'player's coach'.

Darren Kirby himself, in the aftermath of AOCAF 66, credited Montgomery's leadership during their SWC title winning stint in Siovanija & Teusland as an influence on his own thinking in Jabal Ahkdar, and there have never been questions over the course of her time in the Euran Territories in regard to her ability as a first team boss.

The announcement itself was sent out to the national media apparatus—news wires, TV/radio, national dailies—well after the traditional deadline of 12:40 am (0040) for early edition inclusion, prompting an online backlash accusing the FAC of attempting to bury the news. In an open media conference video call at 2:00 am (0200), FAC Director of Media Relations Sasha Henderson forcefully pushed back against that narrative.
“Are we ready? First, a statement from me individually, not representing the FAC. I have been here at State Street for 38 straight hours as of this minute. Do not ever accuse me of trying to bury information. Every one of you who know me know better. End of personal statement, apologies will be accepted via my email.
Official Statement now. The FAC Board have been present on site continuously since 1:30 pm yesterday, 12 ½ hours ago. The Board voted to accept the terms of the contract for Zoe Montgomery to assume the Technical Directorship of the FAC about 40 minutes ago. The Board remains in session at this moment, although in recess subject to recall. No further updates will provided prior to 5pm (1700). Thank You.”

Barnard to lead National Team

Scott McCrae
The Daily Mail Chief Soccer Writer

The Football Association of the Commonwealth announced that it has selected Will Barnard to become the 27th Manager of the Baker Park National Team, replacing Jennifer Prescott and bypassing her assistant Darren Kirby who led the squad that won the 66th AOCAF Cup.

Kirby's statement following the news that an agreement had been reached pointed out how the two men's careers had intertwined.
“I offer my sincere congratulations to Will on the appointment. His departure paved the way for me to move into his role to learn from Jen and today we pass each other in the opposite direction. I understood that this was going to be a difficult situation to handle for Zoe, Will and myself given the fact we have known one another for such a long time, but we came to a mutual agreement that the outcome would not affect our friendship. I wish both Will and Zoe all the very best, confident that they will continue to take the National Team forward.

I cannot express my gratitude to Steven Fleming and Liam Sullivan enough for all of the support they've provided to me throughout my tenure, to Ally LeFleur and Chairwoman Cheryl Henderson for their leadership of the organization, to the Board for their consideration of my candidacy and the complimentary remarks made when the decision was announced. I do not leave the FAC with any regrets, as I have spent my entire professional career here and couldn't imagine a better place to have done so. Thanks to the players, supporters and rest of the staff for making the experience memorable from beginning to end.”

Barnard praised Kirby in a brief statement ahead of his introduction at the FAC Development Charter Center tomorrow.
“I am humbled to have been chosen to lead the National Team of the Commonwealth, to follow in the footsteps of Jen Prescott, Ichi Tuzzio, Pam Scott, Trevor Richmond, George Charleston. Pam once said to me that when you stand there as the anthem is played, knowing that everything is on your shoulders that's when you have to erase any fear you have from your mind. I thought of that the first match I took charge of at Gunzlach and understood exactly what she meant.

Darren Kirby and I started at the FAC at about the same time, just a few weeks apart. We've shared office space, hotel rooms, we were flatmates for awhile. He's one of the smartest minds in the game and I'm torn between emotions of being excited for the future and heartbreak for him. I will not be surprised at wherever his career takes him from this point, because I know he will rise to the highest level. Bonne Chance, DK.”

General Secretary Allison LeFleur released a statement on behalf of the FAC Board of Directors.
"The Board have instructed me to make the following statement: We are indebted to Darren Kirby for his tireless service to the FAC over the years, he has performed his various roles within the organization dutifully and with the utmost professionalism. He led the National Team to our second regional championship victory and has every qualification that can be asked for to lead any national team squad in the multiverse. We came to the decision to offer Will Barnard the position of manager of the Baker Park National Team after one of the most in depth search processes that have ever been undertaken. We wish nothing but the very best for Darren in the future, and we shall always hold him in the highest regard."

The decision to bring Barnard and Zoe Montgomery back from their managerial experience overseas can be interpreted as an intent to take the Development Charter program into a new direction, even if it more of a course correction rather than a turn onto a completely different destination. In making a definitive continuity break from a straight line succession running from Trevor Richmond to Jen Prescott, the Board, along with Steven Fleming and Liam Sullivan, appear to be open to seeing what influence from outside the organization, through the lens of a pair of coaches that have each forged their own path in different circumstances, might be of use towards the advancement of the sport across both grass roots and international elements within the FAC's mission.

General Conference outlines FAC shakeup
by Fiona Devlin, Senior Soccer Writer
for The Times

Reporting from Oceana:

The 131st FAC General Conference began as an introduction to a new era for the governing body of soccer in the Commonwealth and concluded with an outline for a structural revamp of the profession pyramid.

Executive Director Steven Fleming opened the meeting with a tribute to former National Team manager Jennifer Prescott and Assistant Manager Darren Kirby, citing the duo as being responsible for the pair of AOCAF Cups that Baker Park have captured; he praised both for their longevity in the National Team organization and their direct impact on the Development Charter in their on-field and behind the scenes roles.

The new National Team management structure was introduced, as Will Barnard, Zoe Montgomery, Chris LaRue and Danielle Harper, along with holdover goalkeeping coach Elaine King appeared together; General Secretary Allison LeFleur followed Fleming, providing the delegates with an update on prospective host bids submitted for Baptism of Fire 81 and for a return of the Under-18 World Championships.

The report on the joint FAC-National League study into the structure of the pyramid indicated that a change to a 20 club Championship, 20 club 2nd Division and a split of the 3rd Division into a 20 club third tier and an 18 club fourth tier would be the most practical setup, along with an addition of at least two new clubs to the National Conference and offering Full Membership to at least four clubs, raising the total to 132.

IFCF Roundup
National League Champions Ezriquay United carried the banner for the rest of Baker Park's clubs in IFCF play this season, the only qualifier for a group stage among the five entries into the Champions League and the Challengers Cup and the three WNL participants in the Liga B Trophy.

United missed out on making the CL Group stage by falling in the Playoff Round to Pemecutin's Pesub Ubuna, for which the consolation was a guaranteed spot in the CC Group stage; Asbury Park almost joined them but fell to Bikarish in the CC Playoff Round.

United's finest moment came in the Associations Trophy, the first NL club to participate in that competition; a third place CC Group J finish transferred them to the Round of 32 in the AT, from where they proceeded to make it to Semi Finals, where Northern Union of Brenecia brought the journey to an end.
Sherwood Forest Ladies also made it to the final Playoff stage before losing out to Valanora's Raynor City, while United also participated in the AOCL where they dropped a thrilling quarterfinal tie against Megabrantid—managed by former Monmouth Park boss Larry Bryson—8-6, with the second leg going to extra time to decide the victor.

FAC Cup winners Sanborn Borough fell at the first hurdle in the Cup Winners Cup and Lima City United's Academy side also were in and out after just one round in the Rising Stars Cup.

Season Preview
The upcoming National League season will provide the usual drama, close title and relegation fights and resumption of rivalries generations in the making, but in the top flight Championship, it will also be the last season contested as an 18 club league.

From 1954 through 1991, the Championship was a 22 team competition, followed by a three year transition when it had 20 members before beginning the 1995 season with the current number.

A two year study by the League and the FAC looked at 17 different top tier domestic competitions across the multiverse in nations within a similar population range, finding in over half (9), 20 clubs was the composition with a three-up/three down promotion system; one point that has been studied is how many fixtures top flight clubs play per season in those countries.

Entering his second season, NL President Connor Moore came to the post with an ambitious agenda to raise the profile of the League commiserate with the current IFCF league coefficient rankings; the joint study was already underway when he took over, but he was an enthusiastic supporter of the cooperative effort between the League and the FAC.

“I saw from an outside perspective how Trevor Richmond worked to bring the Association and the league closer during his tenure as Sporting Director and Liam (Sullivan) has carried that on with an ambitious vision, so I was excited when I came to this job because it makes all of us stronger when the governing body and the professional organization are fighting together instead against one another as was the case in the old days.”

The two clubs that would normally be relegated to the 2nd Division will instead for this one time playoff against the third and fourth placed sides from the lower tier over two legs, the winners being the two “expansion” beneficiaries. A similar idea will be used at the bottom of the D2 table, where the 18th placed club will play a single, neutral site match against the fourth placed Third Division finisher, the winner of which will join the top three promoted teams, while only 19/20 will go down automatically.

An expansion of the top flight doesn't happen in a vacuum so there will be additional changes in the pyramid structure, with options on the table of an additional two clubs moving to the National Conference mixed gender setup along with another expansion of FAC Full Member club status both on the men's and women's front that would facilitate further balancing of the size of lower divisions, including the reintroduction of a 2nd Division the WNL.

The Championship itself has undergone an evolution over the past several seasons, as long time bosses have called time on their careers, replaced by a newer generation that have built reputations at the lower levels.
Paul Julian stepped aside after 18 seasons at Midtown AC after leading them to a Challengers Cup berth, his place taken by Tony Weiss in the surprise signing of the off-season; the former National Team coach and Under-18 manager was under consideration to replace Jen Prescott, but jumped at the opportunity to follow Julian at MAC, a stable successful club with a lot of upside going for it.

The specter of NT Assistant Manager Darren Kirby on the open market raised a great deal of speculation about whether a club needing an injection of new blood might make a move, but the clamor died down when it became apparent that Kirby was content to not work at all for a season, possibly waiting for a call from a national team ahead of World Cup Qualifying.

Speaking of Prescott, there was not the same general feeling that she presented a threat to any of the managers in the WNL, primarily based on the fact that she has zero experience at a club; her style of communication with her players (her 'man-management') might fit well in a domestic situation but it's not an advantage against the current managerial lineup in Baker Park.

Which is in danger of being co-opted in its entirety by the Manager of the Season, Faith Enzikomibo who only took over from the most successful female club boss in the history of the Commonwealth, Patricia George, and led Sherwood Forest Ladies back to the title after a one year hiatus.

Enzikomibo re-tooled the Little Janes from the most prolific scoring side in women's soccer history in Baker Park to a disciplined, defensive, counterattacking unit that was the tightest defense in the league.

Women's National League Review
Newmarket Ladies captured the Women's National League title on a wild final day, finishing level on points with Sherwood Forest Ladies but having a superior goal difference after the pair split their fixtures.

Both clubs lost on both the first and final days of the season, and fourth placed Clayton City Ladies, who topped the table much of the season, also dropped their final match to eventual fifth placed Shirley Metros Ladies.

While the title was Newmarket's, the story was the hard charge down the stretch by the Little Janes and third place Ravens Ladies to knock CC out of the final IFCF place. After dropping a 3-2 away decision to 'Market, Forest were 8 points back and nine behind the Red Stripes. They proceeded to win seven and draw one of the next nine before their final stumble.

It's the sixth title in top flight for Newmarket, and second in three seasons.

National League Championship Review
As for the ladies, so too for the men, with a nearly identical title race storyline that ended with New Bremen taking their sixth championship in the last ten seasons after a second half march up the table to pip Westwood Sprites at the wire.

The final day saw all three top finishers lose matches in a bit of an anti-climax after Brem roared back from a nine point gap at midseason, winning 12 and drawing one of their last 17 fixtures.

An equally impressive rise was that of the clubs in the relegation zone at half-term, Oceana rivals Learfield and Llewellyn Turnpike; both were considered down and out as the new calendar year began but LFC took 35 points and Turnpike 32 to climb to away from danger, and in the case of the Eggplants, into a Challengers Cup spot.

The toll of defending their league crown and participating in international competition was a hill to steep to climb for the defending champions, who finished at the foot of the table which normally be the trap door to the Second Division, but victory in the playoff for both United and Monmouth Park will spare their blushes this time.
