UC beats Sharks to move to 4-1

Teresa Bramlage
Daily News Football Writer

Reporting from Point Dume, Humaliwo

University of the Commonwealth broke out of their offensive doldrums with a 521 yard offensive explosion in a 43-23 win over the hosts from University of Humaliwo.

James Knapke threw for 371 yards and 3 touchdowns and added another 48 yards on the ground as the Warriors raced to a 17-3 lead just 3 minutes into the second quarter.

The Sharks won the toss and elected to take the ball, and their confidence showed as they drove 55 yards to take the lead on a 40 yard field goal from kicker Anthony Martin. But UC showed their growing offensive confidence by going 80 in 7 plays, Knapke finding junior WR Vanel Dossous on a 16 yard touchdown strike which gave the Warriors a lead they would not relinquish.

UH gave the ball back to the UC offense on their next possession, after QB Jackson Brandt threw the first of his 3 interceptions, with CB Clint Stephens returning the pick to the UH 42. Nick Fields came on 5 plays later to convert a 39 yard field goal to extend the UC lead to 10-3.

The Warrior defensive unit--which has been the unexpected strength of team this NSCF campaign--forced a three & out and Knapke led the offense back onto the field from the UC 35. An 8 play, 65 yard drive was capped off by a James Cleveland 9 yard run, his second of the season, pushing the lead to 14.

Humaliwo's next drive found them deep in UC territory again, but the drive stalled and Martin came on for a 36 yard field goal to cut the deficit to 17-6. Nick Fields then restored the Warrior advantage after a 7 play, 50 yard drive with a 44 yard field goal of his own.

The games only defensive breakdown for the Warriors came with time running out in the first half, when Brandt hit a wide open Duncan Corvallis on a 36 yard pass after a mistake in coverage by UC strong safety Isaiah Gourdine. The point after cut the lead to 7 as the teams headed to the break.

UC broke the game open in the 3rd quarter, as they took the ball 73 yards, finished by a magnificent catch by Ronnie Moore, covering 34 yards and the Warriors led by 14 again. On the Sharks first possession of the 2nd half, a penalty pushed the start of the drive back to the 12 and a 10 yard sack by DE Malik Brown put UH in the shadow of their own goal post. On the next play, OLB Austin Valdez swooped in unblocked and took down Hubert Monserrat in the end zone for a safety. Following the free kick, Patric Hannon dived over from the 2 to cap a 61 yard drive and the Warriors led 36-13 with 6:51 left in the 3rd quarter.

Brandt threw his second interception on the ensuing series, but the UH defense came up with a stop and the Sharks took over at their own 41.

Brandt ran in from 5 yards on 4th & goal for the Sharks just a minute into the final stanza, and following a Nick Fields miss on a 51 yard attempt, UH moved into range for another field goal by Martin, this from 33 yards to cut the deficit to 36-23. UC closed out the scoring after Knapke led the offense on an 11 play, 83 yard drive that ended with RB Fred Coppet taking a screen pass 22 yards for his 3rd touchdown of the season. UC picked off Brandt for a third time on the Sharks final drive, then ran out time to score their most impressive victory to date.

Richardson vs Duchess Marion University

"I have to say, I think this team got a little bit too loose," Richard Steinheil said before the game, "Our practices before the Raynor game were not ideal, and I had a bad feeling going in. Now, we still own the point differential tie breaker, but we can't continue to play football like that. It was embarrassing, and it can't happen again. We stressed that in practice this week, and our guys responded. I think that you're about to see them turn in another dominating performance."

What was predicted was delivered. In Richardson's finale to the first half of the round-robin, the team came out like a stampede, putting down Duchess Marion in commanding fashion throughout the first three quarters, where they put up a 36-0 score and totaled 450 offensive yards, allowing only 67 from the opposing side, and forced a ridiculous five turnovers throughout. In the fourth quarter, Richardson played guys that normally don't get a lot of snaps, and their opposition racked up 90 more yards and a touchdown while the reserves themselves scored once more.

John Garrett tossed up a 300 yard, 3 touchdown performance, seeing less and less of a role as the game went on. He currently has 3 games with 3+ touchdown passes, 2 400 yard outings, and two 4 touchdown nights. He is the backbone of this squad. But he isn't the only producer. Melvin Strong led the team in rushing and had a fifth consecutive century mark night, with 150 yards on the ground, two scores on the ground, and one through the air. Through three quarters, that's an absurd number. He was certainly the workhorse tonight.

On the defensive side of the ball, Isaiah Bryce, the true freshman who seems to be getting better every game, had the best game of his career at Richardson, registering an exceptional 13 tackles, with 2 for a loss, a forced fumble and recovery, and an interception. Fellow freshman and athletic freak Judas Wolfson came down with an interception of his own, as did Jason Dim. The final turnover came from the 6'9", 280 pound Emmanuel Miller, who, after throwing back Duchess Marion's right tackle, simple reached up and grabbed the football once it was tossed up.

Overall, it was another momentum win for a reeling Richardson squad, but that may not matter if they fall one more time throughout this tournament. It very well could take a 9-1 finish to win the Big 8 this season.

Cold Hill University vs Raynor University

Cold Hill took its first home, and second overall, loss against Raynor in week five. A 20-10 margin of victory made the game look more competitive than it was, with Cold Hill turning the ball over three times (Thorn Davis: 29/58, 229 yards, 0 TD, 2 INT, 11 rush, 27 yards, 1 fumble). Raynor's defense was spectacular in this one, stressing the containment of Cold Hill's athletic phenom of a QB in Thorn Davis, who responded poorly. Frequent blitzes saw linebackers coming through the A or B gaps while edge rushers came up the field, where they knew Davis preferred to scramble, and there was almost always a spy. Forcing Davis to stay in the pocket resulted in the sophomore QB throwing a pair of interceptions, while his usually explosive running ability was locked down. Passing frequently in the second half, down 20-3, the Buffalo fell apart, Davis's scrambles resulting in sacks and short gains while his passes went wide. Hue Ross was the only effective player on offense in this one, totalling 87 yards and a score on the night.

This was a bad look for an already reeling Cold Hill squad, who is looking like a team that will be lucky to finish 6-4, and for their #2 overall recruit in Ranoria in Thorn Davis. Coming out of high school, Davis was hailed as a 'bigger, stronger Derek McNair with a much bigger arm.' Derek McNair, for any members of our foreign audience, has been called 'the best college football player in Ranorian history,' an unbelievable passer and runner who took the RCF by storm. Instead, Davis is looking to be a sloppy passer who relies on his legs and arm strength to make plays.

The Big Risk- How Horace Browning, with his job on the line, came to trust the starting quarterback job to a true freshman:
Part 2

Image
Chae Heung Kim scrambling for a first down in his team's 26-0 away victory over Fair Haven State

HERZEGOVINA CITY- In their last two games, the Northern Moravica Cougars have taken care of business, to maintain their 1 game lead over Loyola-Istria atop the Celestia Conference, as they are now 5-0. In week 4, the defense pitched their second straight shutout, as they won 23-0 on their home field, to improve their team to 3-0. Freshman quarterback Chae Heung Kim threw a touchdown and an interception in that game, while Okparro had 122 yards rushing and a touchdown on the ground, allowing Northern Moravica to become 4-0 in conference play.

And then, of course, Northern Moravica traveled to the Army Academy for the start of their two game swing in the Free Republics, as the defense pitched their third straight shutout, and their fourth overall of the season, in a 16-0 win over the Army Academy. The game's only touchdown came on a 61 yard punt return by Northern Moravica sophomore Kutubo Colley early in the 2nd quarter, as the defense dominated and there was just enough offense, in 3 quarters, for Northern Moravica to escape the Army Academy, with a shutout road victory. Four shutouts in 5 games isnt' a bad start on defense, even when the only game they allowed points, a team put up 37 on them on their field(though, Northern Moravica did put up 38 in that game, so a win is a win is a win).

Horace Browning could not be happier with his defense's performance. "In every game where we didn't play the defending NSCF Offensive Player of the Year, we have pitched a shutout. We are playing excellent defense. Helping each other, trusting each other, flying towards the ball, and winning our individual matches. I cannot ask any more of my defense than we have gotten. It is crucial that we have this success too, with such a young offense. A true freshman quarterback, and we are allowing our quarterback to ease into the system. This defense should keep it up, and maybe it will even be able to go down as an all-timer if it can keep up the work that it has done so far.

Of course, we promised our readership last time that we'd come back with part 2/2 of our series into Chae Heung Kim's journey from the quarterback of a local small town high school in Saguenay, to a starting quarterback of the defending Celestia Conference champions. The story of the quarterback competition this summer, which was truly an open competition, which is at least how the Northern Moravica coaches tell it, is divided into two main parts- his on the field performance, and his off the field performance.

Like many young guys, he came to Northern Moravica extremely raw. He was a big guy who could take a lot of hits, and have people bounce off of him, and he seemed to be born with a rocket launcher instead of a human arm on the right side of his body, as he can make all the throws. But in terms of mechanics, what Banijan coaches saw that needed the most work was his footwork. While a common problem for true freshman quarterbacks fresh out of high school, Banijan coaches never the less worried. Kim was going to have an opportunity to start, and that meant fixing his footwork.

When he got here, offensive coordinator Joon Ho Kweon, who was also the quarterbacks coach at the NSCF school in the same region, took him aside. They were, of course, the two major Quebecois people in this entire program- the offensive coordinator, and their #1 overall prized recruit. He told him that he had a legitimate opportunity to win the starting job, but that he needed to polish his mechanics. For the three weeks Kim was in Herzegovina City before training camp started, he was worked har by Kweon. Endless reps of the Manning Drill, and learning the foot fire technique, among others. It wasn't even about reading defenses, not at this stage of his progression. It was about mastering the fundamentals of playing quarterback.

And then, of course, training camp came. Kim had also taken tons of time to study and learn the playbook. All of its nuances, where receivers should be and when. While his compeititon, junior quarterbacks Timocrates Samaras & Theodore Delis, had the playbook for a year, they did not quite have an arm like Kim. But was he ready? Samaras quickly seperated himself from Delis, and it was a neck & neck race until the very end. Kim was picking up on things like footwork from the Quebecois quarterback guru.

Why did he win the job out of camp. Horace Browning has generally said that it gives the team "the best chance to win right now." But why not Samaras or Delis? After some open practices, after Kim was named the starter, it was clear that, in terms of his mechanics, they'd need to be polished. But he's starting anyways. and he deserved it. An unnamed member of the coaching staff said that the guy's raw talent was brilliant, and that he'd have his moments of brilliance, and moments without much brilliance. He was able to match Isaka Jawara, big play for big play, in Northern Moravica's rivalry game with Loyola-Istria. And then, of course, there are games like these, where he throws a pair of interceptions without touchdowns, but wins anyways.

Ultimately, they took a risk. The most raw talent, but with the highest ceiling. Would somebody like Samaras be better at limiting turnovers? Probably. But Kim is still learning, and will grow into the position. For now, he's got a team that has pitched 4 shutouts in their first 5 games behind him, and they can keep it up, protecting him, allowing him to be aggressive and even if he makes a mistake or two, as all freshman due, and not cost his team the game, this team has a ceiling as high as the sky for the rest of this season.

No Jobs, no Jawara, No Problem- Alanso Isa's offense picks up right where it left off from last season

Image
Head Coach Alanso Isa hooks arms with his team before leading them onto the field

ISTRIA- Generally, it will always take a couple of games for an offense to find their groove on the gridiron, especially in college. You need to get used to the new pieces, you need to build chemistry, the freshmen and transfers need to learn the playbook, and frankly, the scout team defense needs to learn your offensive tendencies to give you better challenges in practice. Ultimately, this process is going on for Loyola-Istria, and they truly broke out of the gate this year for the second time, though this was without their star quarterback, Isaka Jawara. They went on the road, and in a hostile environment against Northern Dinagat State in Lycrabon, were able to dominate every phase of the game, scoring touchdowns on their first four possessions en route to a 41-10 victory over Northern Dinagat State. They took the crowd out of it early, as the defending champs were able to largely coast to victory.

What is it about this system, originally insittuted by Alastair Jobs, that makes the offenses so successful? The Blue Thunder had a top-ranked offense when they won the championship in NSCF 14, and last season, they had the singular top ranked offense. It is a system instituted by Alastair Jobs, and he has ingrained it at this University. Even pulling a head coach from another university, Alanso Isa, he was able to largely keep the defensive system in place from beforehand, and is enjoying a similar amount of success. So far, they are one of only two teams averaging over 30 points a game, with them being just a hair over 30 per game, while Richardson lead the entire NSCF with over 32 points per game. Once again, these two teams will be headed towards a high-stakes non-conference, end of the season clash that will have a major impact on playoff seeding and tiebreakers and the like.

The system puts a lot of trust in the quarterback. We would say he was blessed with star quarterbacks, but that was no random stroke of luck, like a public high school. He, year in and year out, was able to recruit Banija's top quarterback prospoects for the chance to play in his system. There is a reason that, over the course of 20+ years coaching at this school, he has never started a freshman quarterback- the system is too complicated. Quarterbacks have to be able to make reads, as they use a lot of high-tempo, fast-paced, read-pass options. They like to spread it out, and the quarterback is forced to read the defense- he must learn how to make those reads. He will have to move, he will have to improvise. He has to get all of his players involved too, as by making the quarterback the focal point, it is on him to spread the ball out to the receivers.

Duta Condeh has stepped in, of course, and done an admirable job. Of course, Isaka Jawara is questionable next week, and currently listed as probable for Loyola-Istria's rematch with their archrivals from Herzegovina City in 2 weeks- the opportunity for Isaka Jawara to exact revenge on the current Celestia Conference leaders, who defeated Loyola-Istria by a grand total of a single point in their first matchup, which was a crazy back and forth affair and the probable game of the season for the Celestia Conference. But why has Condeh been able to do such a good job? Alastair Jobs is known for relying on his quarterbacks, and new head coach Alanso Isa is known for doing that as well. However, you simply can't replace Isaka Jawara. Enter, from stage right, Chinou Obea & Nathaniel Islan.

The running back duo is quite the formidable duo. At a place that runs the football more, like Northern Moravica, they would probably get a lot more press, But it is very telling what they have done the last two games when Jawara has been out. They are not putting pressure on their young receiving corps, or forcing a quarterback to be thrown into the starting lineup midseason and being asked to imitate Jawara. Isa has essentially turned this team from an air attack offense in the past few games, into one that can pound the rock, which can only strike fear into the heart of their opponents. Obea and Islan each had a rushing touchdown at home against Fair Haven State, their fourth straight game to start the season in the country. And then, in this game, they each had two rushing touchdowns, and both ran for over 100 yards.

Outside of Jawara, this offense is very young. Underclassmen starting for the first time at both guard spots, putting in a quarterback who was supposed to be a backup this year, and then a pair of young, up and coming running backs. They are getting all kinds of runs, from running exotic formations. From putting somebody like Islan in the slot and then running a jet sweep, to Obea lining up out wide and taking a wide receiver screen, Isa and Zervos are finding ways to get the ball to their playmakers. It is working, and they are putting up points. Alanso Isa was able to keep this offense right on track when he came here for 3 reasons. One, he was a disciple of this system himself, using it successfully at the Islamic University of Busoga. Second, he was able to keep much of the coaching staff. Lessening the impact of the change, it helped him connect with players and the community more, and helped make the transition much smoother.

Ultimately, they are picking up from where they left off, and they will do whatever they can to continue this pace of scoring points. 30 points per game, for an entire season? It is a difficult task, but with Jawara coming back in a couple of weeks, that will be the expectation for this team considering the way they've started this season.

Bombers unbeaten, Warriors look for 5 straight
by Peter Brinson, National College Football Editor

Having reached the midway point of NSCF 18 and set for a rematch against Besulyt Air Academy, University of the Commonwealth is coming off its best offensive showing, hoping to carry over that momentum plus a home crowd advantage to avenge their only defeat.

When the Warriors (4-1) face off against the Bombers (5-0) at Gleason Field, they will come in with as much confidence on both sides of the ball as they have had since September of 2017. And a victory will put them into a tie for first place in the Mineral Conference.

The Besulyt team they will face will be far different than the one that won 9-3 in Krossa. UC coach Scott Newell said that he has well-founded concerns for his improved defensive unit. "The tape we've seen of them since our first game is making me a bit concerned. They have so many targets and they use all of their people. They have about 8 guys who have multiple catches in games; so we're fortunate in a way that #81 Vanhannen, who I think is their best receiver, is out."

But Newell couldn't hide his satisfaction with the improvement of the offense, who put up over 500 yards in the last game at University of Humaliwo. "We been pretty tough on the guys during practice and I think that has as much to do with anything in terms of performance. The extra effort, the dominant play of the offensive line and a smarter, tighter game plan have us looking forward to this second half of games."

Ranoria Sweep

Alright Raynor City, we see you and your University doing work against what it supposed to be the most dominant teams in the conference, leading the Big Eight table at the halfway point and looking quite good in the fashion that you are doing it. Normally people expect the Rockets to be flying high on a pass heavy offense that looks to merely outscore its opposition than really pay all that much attention to the finer details of its defensive game. Someone forgot to tell this bunch of freshman and sophmores that and instead the defense of the Rockets has been putting on a clinic in the way that they have been flying to the ball and forcing turnovers against the better opposition in the conference. With this new attitude of being able to bend but not break, we might just be seeing a revolution in the way that the Rockets will be playing and could be being a witness to the Raynor overtaking Mar Sara Tech as the premier university for amateur sportsmen and women to compete to. For what Raynor may miss out on the glitz and glam of style that Mar Sara Tech has, they are making up for in their class and performance, not to mention the lifestyle of comfort and entertainment with the capital being one of the most rated tourists spots in the region year in and year out.

Against Cold Hill, the Rockets knew that merely playing in their traditional dime package would not suffice with the way that Cold Hill's quarterback had an explosive amount of running to his own game, making a true two way threat out there on the filed. In preparation for this, the Rockets built in multiple nickel packages as well as a few 3-3-5 packages to confuse and trick the signal caller into making poor decisions. With multiple blitz packages also utilized, Thorn Davis seemed helpless in the backfield, especially once Birk Lundström has driven the Rockets down the field three times in the first four drives for a commanding twenty to three lead. The need to press and get back into the game just made the matters worse as Davis routinely found himself throwing into double coverage or having to scramble away from loose runner coming at him, forcing either errant throws or multiple sacks. All in all, the twenty to ten scoreline might have even flattered Cold Hill with how well disciplined and well drilled the Rockets where for this game, letting Raynor feel good about themselves and their first half of work, but knowing that their work needs to continue if they want to steal the crown away from Ranoria completely.

The Raiders played far more to their usual style, despite being on the road for their final game of the first half, and aired it out all day over the University of Constantinople, with Julian Mårtensson throwing for three first half touchdowns, dismissing the idea that the freshman is not up to this level of play. However the young quarterback has to thank his line and the hard running game of Natanael Holmgren, who put up a hundred thirty-four years and a touchdown himself. However the biggest play of the game came early in the second quarter when the Raiders had pinned Constantinople at their own five and forced a three and out. Asse-Asselin was sent in with the rest of the punt block team and he deilverred, getting all of his six-six frame into the air and deflecting the punt, letting Vide Gustafsson scoop up the spinning ball for a safety, while Folke Danielsson would have his career long of a forty-seven yard field goal to start the second half and clinch the game for the Raiders, despite a fourth quarter touchdown for the hosts that made the score a smidgen more respectable for Constantinople.

Now Mar Sara has a little momentum to try and get their season back into gear and make a push for not just bowl eligibility but to also continue to put the pressure on Raynor, Cold Hill, and Richardson to continue to win all the games that they are supposed to while cannibalizing themselves and allowing for the Raiders to maybe sneak in and nab the conference title at the end of it all. Unlike the Rockets who have managed to find a way to outperform their historically poor defensive showing, the Raiders instead have had that flaw be exposed hardily three times and are fortunate to have only lost in two of those three occasions. With a negative point differential it is no wonder where the need to improve is for the Raiders and the need to do it quickly, for the Big Eight has a level of competition that means you can not take a week off and still expect to be in contention.

Warriors bounce Bombers, take league lead

James Greer
Daily Mail Chief Football Writer

Reporting from Gleason Field, Belle Haven:

University of the Commonwealth rolled to their fifth straight Mineral Conference victory with a 31-10 decision over Besulyt Air Academy in front of an animated and raucous crowd of 46,965 on College Hill.

UC quarterback James Knapke had his second consecutive 300 yard passing day and second 3 touchdown perfomance in the NSCF competition as the hosts dominated the previously unbeaten Bombers. James Cleveland also added a TD on the ground, his third of the campaign, as part of another 500 plus yard offensive showing for the Warriors.

For the second time in UC's three home games, the weather played a factor in the proceedings, as a day long shower showed no sign of abating at kickoff. UC won the toss and elected to defer their choice until the 2nd half, reinforcing a confidence in their defense that has performed beyond expectations.

Knapke put the Warriors on the board first with a 27 yard TD pass to TE Hunter Folksterma with 1:42 left in the first quarter. Follwing 2 changes of possession, the Warriors took over at their own 40 and drove the 60 yards capped by Teo Redding's 9 yard diving catch which gave UC a 14-0 lead at intermission.

The conditions seemed to affect Besulyt QB Matti Pettersson, as he completed only 12 of 28 passes for just 185 yards, and was limited to just 26 yards on the ground. He was sacked twice in the contest, once by LB James Sanford in the third quarter and again in the 4th quarter by freshman DT Nico Lautanen.

It was Pettersson's lone interception that led to UC's third score after Clint Stephens stepped in front of Eemil Karpinnen at the Bomber 47, setting up the Warriors to drive the distance and Cleveland's 4 yard run put them ahead 21-0 with 6:45 left in the 3rd.

On the Bombers next drive, which took 9 plays & covered 80 yards, Jaimo Ruoho punched in from 6 yards out to cut the deficit to 21-7. But on the first play of the ensuing drive, Knapke found Ronnie Moore for a 74 yard pass which extended the Warrior lead to 28-7.

The rain stopped soon after, and Besulyt kicker Halfdan Adamsen and UC kicker Nick Fields traded field goals in the 4th quarter to finish the scoring as the teams ended the game tied for the lead in the Mineral Conference, with UC edging ahead on point differential.

Warriors Coach Scott Newell was enthusiastic in his praise of the team's effort. "I thought coming in that this was the best team we had faced so far in this competition, and that we would have to win this game to have a chance to finish 1st. I told Coach Amundsen that he has earned my respect by the way his team has performed, even though it was a bit unfortunate about the weather, which I think played a part. But our guys have pointed to this game since we got back from Krossa. I think the improvement we have made on both sides of the ball is a validation to our team that last year's season was more about their level of commitment than to our overall direction as a program."

UC will next travel to face Vietussia Academy, who sit one game behind the leaders in third place. Newell is not taking anything for granted yet. "All it takes is a little bit of a let down, and you're going to get whipped in this league. We had to fight for every yard last time against them, and we'll be at their place this time, so I don't think we have anything to be comfortable about yet".

Richardson University @ Cold Hill University

With a 4-1 record, Richardson, despite its absolutely absurd point differential of +111 through five games, with their only loss coming against Raynor, 24-16, is sitting at second in the big eight conference through those five games. Cold Hill, meanwhile, has been scraping through the first half of their schedule, dropping games against both Richardson in their opener and against Raynor last week. At 3-2, they have a meager +25 point differential, and while their defense has proven to be decidedly average, their offense has been wildly inconsistent. If they drop this one, they very well could fall out of playoff contention for the second straight year. This would be an embarrassment to the program, after Richardson University has torn through its regular schedule in each of the past two seasons, qualifying for the playoffs in each.

And here's the kickoff, not much of a return from Neal Samuel, he'll get it out to the nineteen...

As the broadcast that most of Ranoria was either watching or listening to went on, Thorn Davis took the field with his offense. He'd lied to the media, saying that his confidence hadn't been shaken from his four turnover, three interception meltdown against Raynor in Cold Hill's previous contest. And against a Richardson defense that had allowed 20 points just once in the past five weeks, he certainly wasn't feeling that surge of arrogance that he normally had, even after all the talk of beating Richardson.

Getting the call from the sidelines from a poster, unlike John Garrett, who got the call through his helmet and adjusted the play as needed, Davis lined up in the shotgun and took the first snap of the game.

He was almost immediately pressured by Douglas Starling, the speed rusher screaming off the edge with arms extended, but Davis stepped up in the pocket, shrugging off the tackle attempt afterwards, and fired the ball far down field, his cannon of an arm carrying it far beyond the reach of Carl Amerson, unfortunately, on a simple fly route.

Shaking his head, he looked to the sideline, and smirked. It was a play they'd installed this week after the meltdown against Raynor. Roll-out play action passes, something they hadn't done much of in the past, were looking to be a larger part of the playbook, head coach Chris Dale having seen the need to make greater use of Davis's athleticism.

So, once again in the shotgun, Caleb Katterfield faked the handoff well, the up, chipped massive freshman DT Julius Volt, and ran a flat, parallel with his quarterback, giving him a checkdown that he didn't want to take at first, eyes downfield on Jarrett Hauptmann, manned up against corner Millard Johnson. He pulled the ball back, ready to fire, and didn't even see Judas Wolfson coming.

With a sound like a cannon firing, the freshman safety leveled the massive quarterback, sending the significantly larger man, and the football, flying back. Wolfson tried to get the ball, but Davis was able to corral it before a disastrous play was made even worse.

Despite this effort, he was on the ground for a good moment, each breath sending a lightning bolt through his ribcage after the hit. For a moment, he laid there, hoping that the pain would subside, but he soon realized that the longer he lay there, the sooner the training staff would realize that he'd broken something.

And there was no way he was going to let Flint Carter take over this game.

His second effort didn't get much, however, just an incomplete pass and a punt after that. Fortunately, an impressive Richardson drive stalled out around the nineteen yard line, and Ta'shaun Blue missed his field goal attempt, which wasn't unusual by any means.

The next two drives were brutal on both sides. Five combined sacks from each team, four punts, and Thorn Davis hit the ground four times. As the first quarter began to close, even the analysts were beginning to point out Davis's obvious injury, the quarterback hobbling to and from the sideline. It was bad. But their defense had come to play football, having not allowed Richardson's offense to score, even if they had racked up over a hundred yards in the first quarter.

With the ball back in John Garrett's hands, Richardson was looking to break open what had been a shutout game until this point. Steinheil had called a dagger concept, but John Garrett was done with this rythm passing. It was time to take a few shots. The veteran stepped back, looking back and forth so that everyone got his call, changing the play and the offensive formation.

Once he got the ball, he looked down Larry Foster, drawing Marcell Salley just a bit off of Kieran Kweo Atksion, then quickly snapped back and fired the ball dowfield.

Clara North never had a chance.

Against such an athletic, big-framed receiver, the female corner simply didn't have the size to contest a jump ball, nearly falling when Atkison came down with the ball, and being left in his dust with a stiff arm. Garrett would never admit it, but it was an improvement over Javier Gilmore. The kid could play, and he could blaze, but so could Atkison, and Atkison was a good deal over Gilmore's 5'9" stature.

And with that, the Governors jumped out to a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Cold Hill answered, though. On the next drive, Thorn Davis dropped back, fighting through injury, and put up a jump ball for Jarrett Hauptmann. Against the 7 inches shorter and less technically sound Millard Johnson, it was no contest, Cold Hill responding to Richardson's one play drive by doing the exact same thing.

And when the Governors got the ball back, handing it off to second runner Elijah Sampson, star pass rusher Angelo Gordon threw off his blocker and sent an uppercut through Sampson's arms, putting the ball in the air for him to snag. He was tackled immediately, but it set up a second touchdown within a minute. And when Richardson's next two drives stalled out, Cold Hill put up two field goals, one to end the half, Richardson's 7-0 lead quickly turning into a 13 point deficit.

"How's it feeling, Thorn?" Steinheil knelt next to his quarterback, who was struggling to breathe by now.

"Th-that's it." He leaned back against the wall as the trainer worked to get his pads off.

"That doesn't look good, coach." The trainer muttered, seeing as an entire side of Thorn's body was badly discolored.

"Alright, alright. Get Carter warming up. He's done."

I don't see Thorn Davis out here with his teammates, looks like he's done for the day. But here we have John Garrett on third down. He put up a lot of yards in that first half, but for only seven points. If he can't work some magic on this third and nine, the Governors will have to settle for another field goal, and we saw how that worked for them last time.

Garrett's dropping back, looking, fires a dart to Krause! The tight end keeps moving his legs, he's still going! Shrugs off a tackler and he'll fall into the end zone! We have ourselves a ball game, folks! Touchdown, Governors!

Cold Hill struggled to answer, but they were still up 20-14 by the end of the third, and driving, by now on Richardson's 13 yard line. Flint Carter, the transfer backup, dropped back, and looked to throw, selling the draw well, but Isaiah Bryce hadn't been fooled.

The middle linebacker came down hard, taking Hue Ross down at the line of scrimmage. Then, on third and four, this one a true passing play, Carter floated one over to outside linebacker Paul Braunn.

That seemed like the breaking point for Cold Hill. One run play, and they were into the fourth quarter, but John Garrett shredded the Buffalo defense for his third touchdown pass of the game. On the next drive, two tackles for a loss followed by a Julius Volt sack resulted in a safety...which saw another touchdown pass that put the game on ice, 30-20.

With four minutes to go, Carter had a chance to take the game back, but the pocket passer panicked when pressured by freshman backer Bryce, and his pass was intercepted by senior safety Jason Dim.

Melvin Strong ground the rest of the clock out, seeing Cold Hill fall apart yet again against a school that just seemed to have their number, having swept them in the NSCF schedule...and beating them in the championship.

Now at 3-3, Cold Hill is almost certainly out of the running for the playoffs, but at 5-1, Richardson is still very much a contender in this championship race, especially while quarterbacked by Garrett, who is having an absolutely stellar season, even without key offensive piece Johnny Farmer in place.

Vangaziland faced provincial rival Auster after a huge loss to Bowerstone University, 30 - 42. It was an ugly game where the team's quarterback failed to look polished. It was a match they hoped to forget. They couldn't afford to slump, especially not against Auster.

Things got off a bit sluggish for Imperial. Their first drive moved the chain, but it was step by step. The team had to convert 5 third downs before getting to the red zone. The Royals were trying to force the run. Auster fought back hard, being a surprisingly resilient defensive unit.

Imperial only beat Auster 10 - 3 during their first NSCF matchup of the season. The second drive showed that Imperial was indeed a bit better prepared. Once again, things started off a little slow. IMA still looked to be forcing the run.

In an I set, the receivers were well covered. The secondary had less to watch. It looked like another run was coming as QB Marlon called hike on 2nd and 5. Marlon did such a good enough job of selling the hand off that the opposing safeties bought in.

Banks hit his receiver with a feint of a slow gait before hitting a stutter step and sprinting a route right. The safety seemed to buy in, but was still focused on the center, assuming Banks was going to center. As quickly as he turned, Banks jabbed right towards the corner. The timing had kicked in. He had space from his CB.

The pass was coming, his arms went up, a diving tackle, he broke it and now he saw one safety and an open field. Banks sped up and tucked into the hit. He tried, but was brought down. It was a ten yard play.

On the next play, IMA came out on 1st with a 3WR set. The secondary played off a bit, but were still watching. Auster knew VMR had a big bag of tricks. CB Lamont Daveyelder wasn't having a great season and was having a hard time covering Benny Banks.

Banks would run up as the others recievers did. The others turned or cut in other directions a little sooner, before Banks popped another stutter and ran a straight sprint back. The secondary was off kilter as a laser came in to a timed count. The QB knew what was going on. Daveyelder was having a tough season in general. Nile Bundison exploited this fact.

The pass caught Banks in open space. This time he was able to make his way to the end zone, turning the jets on against a secondary which already looked exhausted.

Bundison would link up with Banks for 3 touchdowns. Banks would finish with 111 yards recieving. He's leading Imperial Military Academy in TD Receptions. Reporters caught up with Banks after the game. The topic of his future came up.

"I'd like to go pro for sure", he said. This could be complicated coming from a military academy. In Vangaziland, an athlete can go pro if a team will buy out his contract. Vannish gridiron isn't the world's largest talent pool, so someone like Benny could probably get the pro buyout.

"I think I have the skills to play for the Royals in the World Bowl", he said jokingly. "Not first option...." He laughed. "What if I work out and play tight end. Or do some sprints and run back kickoffs?" The reporter bantered back and Benny added, "I'm half serious."

He knew scouts were watching. It was a possibility. He'd have to hit the pros and finish as rookie of the year. It'd be tough.

Defense did their part to close things out. The D line put a lot of pressure on Auster's QB. DE Manny Huckstabee sacked Nile Bundison twice. The linebacks also came in to bring pressure. IMA didn't bring any safety blitzes tonight, though they have in the past.

The result was a 27 - 10 finish, capped off by Randall Coolidge field goal. Imperial found themselves 4-2, along with TCC. They'll look to keep pushing as the second half of the season wears on.

Space in the Race

Another season in the Sequoia Conference confusing the normal expectation that the Academy might end up in a more appropriate named conference like the Celestial Conference. However it was the Academy of Space who left a good impression on the Sequoia Conference in the 17th N ationstates college football tournament by representing sequoia into the final championship match.

There are some familiar teams in the tournament to compete against such as Akers State Univeristy but also some new opponents including the Terrestrial Acclimation Academy of Space itself.

Halfway through the tournament and the Academy of Space were in second place behind the unbeaten Gyan-Johnson University of Aggrey-fynn land. Then on the 6th game day it was a big day for Space. The Academy of Space defeated the bad team from New Angeles State University of the Valladars and this wasn't a surprise. The surprise was that the worse team from Space, the Terrestrial Acclimation Academy, was able to defeat Gyan-Johnson University!

The win was just the second ever for the Terrestrial Acclimation Academy who were very excited for this result. Before this the only win they have accomplished is against New Angeles State University who are also not good. Now this win over Gyan-Johnson University is very big because Terrestrial Acclimation Academy is proving they are acclimating to the terrestrial play.

Also, for the Academy of Space, the result is a big helping matter to ensure that if the Academy of Space can win over Gyan-Johnson University later in the schedule, and also not lose other matches, then the Academy of Space can still win the Sequoia Conference.

The Academy of Space has the best points differential in the Sequoia Conference at +99 points and they are going to hope to continue good form to claim their first championship.

Go Astronauts!

The North v. South Showdown outside of football- how does Banija's biggest rivalry effect other sports?

Image
A Northern Moravica basketball player(White) backs down a Loyola-Istria defender(black) in a basketball game between the two schools

ISTRIA- We are approaching the second edition of the North v. South Showdown this season, when Banija's two biggest schools go head to head in the NSCF. This is, as always, a huge game, and the stakes could not be higher. The two teams are a combined 11-1, and they are racing towards the conference's automatic bid to the postseason. The only loss, of course, was in this rivalry game, when they played a thriller in Herzegovina City, a 38-37 great game, that was decided by a mere point. The greatness of Isaka Jawara on full display on the road under the lights, while the prospect Chae Heung-Kim earned his first stripe, playing in this twice-a-year rivalry game. And, of course, think about the statistics. While Loyola-Istria has the top scoring offense in the NSCF through 6 games, with 194 points scored, Northern Moravica is making a case to be the top scoring defense in this season, having a stunning 5 shutouts in their first 6 games played. It has all the makings of an instant classic, and with Loyola-Istria's new stadium, is projected to be the first ever sporting event in Banijan history to top an attendance of 100,000. And with Isaka Jawara returning this week, we expect nothing but fireworks.

Of course, while the magnitude of this game and this rivalry cannot be overstated, while we have described the origins of Banija's first two universities, and how they came about, it is fascinating to look at this rivalry off of the football field. This is not the only sport that the two schools play- they play in a variety of sports, from gridiron football, to men's wrestling, to basketball, to women's soccer. And this rivalry has, of course, effected professional sports teams based in the two cities. The now-defunct women's volleyball league literally consisted of a division based in Herzegovina City, where Northern is located, and a division based in Istria, where Loyola-Istria is located. And, of course, in the Banijan Lacrosse League, the Istria Thunder and the Herzegovina City Kings don't exactly get along.

The first thing we are going to take a look at, is how this rivalry effects the other sports that these two schools play in. The biggest women's sport that these schools play in, as it is illegal for universities to have co-ed varsity sports teams, is soccer. As many know, there is no women's professional sports teams in Banija, and this is the peak of women's soccer. It is fairly popular, and these games are an event. As they can draw big crowds, the Loyola-Istria v. Northern Moravica women's soccer games tend to be held off-campus, a unique future for Banijan college sports. When Loyola is at home, these two schools play at Eastern Stadium, home to BSL club Rukunbi FC, which is right on the water. Ironically named, as it is the most Western stadium on the mainland, but it is what it is. When Northern Moravica is at home, they play at Phoenix Stadium, with a capacity of 25,000, home to BSL side Herzegovina Phoenix, though it is located in the suburbs. Those stadiums regularly fill for those games, as the schools constantly want to one up each other. The now former Northern Moravica striker Musukebba Bajo is from Istria as well, adding to the complexity of the rivalry. She is now going to play in the league in Drawkland.

The next sport we must look at, is hockey. While the BCSG is 65 schools strong, there are only 6 schools that sponsor men's hockey. Not shockingly, the two best collegiate teams in the Greater BHL are Northern Moravica and Loyola-Istria. The Blue Thunder won the conference championship by a game, and while they crashed out early in the Hockey Champions League, it was another version of them one-upping their archrivals to the North. In basketball, however, the opposite is true, as Northern Moravica is the far more established program than Loyola-Istria. Northern Moravica has won the last two domestic college basketball national championships, and while the Islamic University of Busoga is Banija's most storied basketball program, the rivalry between NMU and Loyola remains strong.

This holds true for the less heralded sports in Banija. From rugby, to cricket, to baseball and softball, when these two schools play, the games simply matter more. In baseball, these teams are known for a history of fighting, and there was bad blood between the two baseball programs for quite a while. People in Banija are generally expected to pick one school and root against the other- that is how ingrained the rivalry is in Banija. While there are people who don't like either of Banija's two dominant athletic programs, the vast majority of people have one that they dislike more- which makes these games so watchable. And when you add the stakes like are usually present, like in this weekend's upcoming football game, you make for a great mix of people watching, where bars in every corner of the country will either be red or blue on gameday.

And now, we move onto how this effects professional sports. The Banijan Soccer League does not have a massive history, having just 5 seasons of history at a national level. However, that does not mean that there is no North v. South rivalry. Herzegovina City FC won the Season 3 and Season 4 titles, while Istria City FC won the most recent edition, season 5. The college sports rivalry between the two schools has evolved into a full-on city rivalry- sports teams from Herzegovina City against sports teams in Istria. This past season, of course, the rivalry reached a new height. While Herzegovina City was not seriously in the running for a league championship this season, Istria City FC had to defeat their archrivals to the South on the season's final day to win the league title.

Of course, universities backed their city's professional sports teams, and it ended up being one of the most watched domestic sports games in Banijan history. And while Istria City FC won the league title that day, a 2-1 win while hosting the back-to-back defending champions, they played again just one week later, for the RBSA Cup. Meeting down in the nation's capitol, at the Stadium of the Restoration, they had a ferocious matchup, engraining the rivalry into the hearts and minds of Banijans. A 4-4 thriller that had a little bit of everything, with loud fireworks to mark the end of the season, and it went all the way to penalty shootout, where Herzegovina City FC won on penalties, with their goalkeeper saving 3 penalties in a row. The rivalry is expected to grow, with both teams expected to compete for titles in the long-term, and with both of their intra-city local derby partners currently struggling, and not seriously competing for a league title.

Now, of course, we should do at least a quick preview of the football game. Who is going to win? Well, it is a tough matchup to predict. The Northern Moravica defense has been lights out all season, in their undefeated start, and have 5 shut outs. However, in the one game they allowed points, they allowed 37 at home to Isaka Jawara and the Blue Thunder offense. With the Blue Thunder going over 40 points in each of their last two games, without their star quarterback, we can only imagine what kind of show they'll put on with Jawara back. And while Chae Heung-Kim was able to outduel him at his own stadium, can the freshman handle this kind of environment? He will have never seen a frenzy like this- while he has experienced rivalry week once, he has not visited the hostile confines of Alastair Jobs Field at the New Istria Lightning Yard.

While it is cliche to say the key player is the freshman quarterback, that is absolutely true. Chae Heung-Kim is going to enter a hostile environment, with a ton of noise, and 100,000 people cheering and screaming against his every move. Head Coach Horace Browning brought loudspeakers to practice to help prepare for this game-time environment, but it is tough to simulate this. Can Northern Moravica pull off this upset win on the road? If they did so, they would have almost a complete lock on the conference championship. We know that Isaka Jawara is going to perform. He shredded the Cougar defense in Herzegovina City, and we expect more of the same from him in this game.

What will be the final result? Well, this is a tough one to predict, like we said. We won't predict a winner, because it is truly too close to call, but in what is going to be Banija's largest crowd for any sporting event in the history of our country, we predict that the winner will be catapaulted towards the offseason with confidence, and be the frontrunner for the Celestia Conference championship. The loser, as this is game 2, will have to endure a year's worth of grumbling before they compete again next season, and will have to deal with smacktalking all over the country, and abroad. In the sequel to what was definitively the game of the year in the Celestia Conference, expect more fireworks, and expect the quarterback who has the ball last to win this game for his school.

Gyan-Johnson University Swarm

School Information

Location: Godwin, Central Region, Aggrey-Fynn Land
Total Enrollment: 26,810
Colors: Black and Yellow

Team Information

Gyan-Johnson plays in the Central Ath domestically for all sports except for American Football. The reason why they do not participate in their normal conference for American Football is because their football program is jointly ran with the Lander Football Association. The program takes the best college-level players in Aggrey-Fynn Land and puts them on one team. Since the quality of Gyan-Johnson's team would surpass all the other teams in their domestic college football league, the LFA elected to pull them out of the ECC and join the NSCF, both so the domestic teams could play other teams of a similar level, and Gyan-Johnson's players could get experience on the multiversal stage playing the best teams possible. Since the team is affiliated with the national team, it is generally used as a part of the national pool; some players could get pulled up to the national team, and almost everyone goes on to play professionally after college (barring a career-ending injury). The team technically doubles as a U-23 national team, and the rules of the development program allow for players to stay for a fifth year of eligibility as long as they are under the age of 23 at the start of the season.

Stadium: Nana Kofi Memorial Stadium (85,000 capacity)

Warriors on road, seeking 6th victory

by Aaron Hardison
UC Correspondent for The Times

University of the Commonwealth will look to maintain the top spot in the Mineral Conference tonight when they meet Vietussia Academy for the second time this season at the Papa Vulcan Arena in Oigrad. The Vulcans are a game behind in the standings at 4-2, while UC is 5-1, tied with Besulyt Air Academy.

The first meeting between the teams was a defensive stalemate with a 42 yard field goal by UC's Nick Fields the difference in a 13-10 victory, with most of the second half played in a snow shower.

UC coach Scott Newell made it clear that his decision making in this game would be far different than the earlier contest, when he twice passed up field goal attempts to try for a first down deep in Vulcan territory. "I was looking for some offensive spark on those two drives, but given the same choice now, I'd have taken the points; I have a lot more confidence in Nick and also more confidence in how our defense has been playing".

Weather is not expected to be a factor, and Newell believes that UC will have a much tougher battle on their hands than the previous 2 contests. "I wouldn't be surprised at another low score, but I think that we will need at 4 scores to win this game. Not only have we improved offensively, but so has everyone else".

The game will air on CS1 from 20:30 (17:30 local KO) with pregame coverage from 20:00

-After a loss,we managed to win again.

-Maybe we should accostumate with it.

Part 1

아재들 (Ajaedeul) : The Men from Nowhere

Part 2 : The Beginning

Dear Mr. Jean-Louis,

Thank you for your gracious response to my request to work with you. It is first and foremost my pleasure to work with somebody of this calibre in you.

There is not a lot you would require from me at this point. Right below, however, is a long but important piece of memories that I wrote last night- they are there for your understanding so please read this:

To those who may read this, on an uncertain point in future,

I was born in 2000, in Cornwall, Frontenac. My father was an awkward, talkative person, a man of many travels and distant bloodlines: a Quebecois citizen, of nobleman of original Shin-Koryeo Fleet, with a dash of a shaman in his veins. I am going to take a look around the mix of old football team pictures with that of those left by my father, left deep in my lounge. Anyways, back in his old Quebec City apartment, where he had spent his last days, he owned a huge luggage carrier where he held all the memorabilia from his days as a diplomat and then a professor (on two separate occasions). From a traditional family living in heart of Quebec City, he grew up learning the traditional ways, some of which included Dado (manners holding traditional teas), learning Hanja (Chinese alphabet, it is important to know it for more ancient texts) and Latin, and practice archery (traditional ones, not those we practice and excel on sports) on his own hours, before heading to univesity. At twenty six, he married a Schottic girl, former friend whom came to Saguenay on exchange, and a daughter of a hardworking couple in Handon, Schottia.

Unfortunately, my mother (whose blond shades I got from) died in a very unfortunate accident (sound, springs) when I was seven and there is only so much of memory I have of her remaining to this day. The mountains of memories and pictures, unfortunately, remained very limited in my recollections that once contained of Joyce Library in St. Croix (my parents' favourite spots from their child-free days in Quebec City, according to my other grandfather). By this point, the mountains started rumbling and my odyssey had to begin for a long decade. A long it may seem, dear reader, but it is only the half the time Odysseus had to spend on route to Penelope and Telemachus, so please understand how long it may be at least!

My father, broken over what had happened with the tragic death of his Schottic wife, began his time immediately after by serving in the Quebecois Embassy in Centralis, Electrum, as a minister (second in command for those who wonder). Then, two years later, he was remarried to my second mother, Laura Kim. I do not recall a lot of those early days, as it took a half year of their courtship and myself unintendedly turning blind eye to it all for me to figure it out. With that being said, my relationship was great with Laura. I was extremely fond of her, despite our frequent misunderstandings - a particular symptom of someone coming in so late to fill a huge role for someone whose notion of a mother was already set (at least for my mindset on that age). She played violin. She would regularly trance herself to draw the motivation- I am still fond of the surprisingly scandalous reaction I had back when they played the Kreutzer Sonata- and that's what my father perhaps found stability in.

I grew, a happy, healthy (perhaps too healthy for my mother's liking) in a dazing world of old-smell books, eternal sunshine (that I have found so little of upon return to Quebec), piano recitals and open suitcases. Around me, the embassy world and surrounding spaces revolved as a personal, quiet universes where I would travel in spaceships and mini-footballs (the kinds varied, depending on whose diplomat's child I talked to), under a quiet microscope of worlds colliding and merging with one and another.

From the young age, I came to understand and like people, but especially those in a similar world around me. Novopetrogradian emigres escaping the oligarchy and the arms of the latest not-dictator told me about their late newspapers. My parents, both cultured beings from traditional houses, took me out to bookstores, taught me how to play violin and piano, read me Les Pieces and far too many Sonnets, and had me join them to watch few Shakespeares (it took me a decade to finally understand them, just in time for my A-Level). Most importantly of all, I adored and respected them and felt glad whenever they would talk about their colleagues, who would often bring their kids (most were my classmates) and we would go out on friday night school dances.

On almost every city I stayed, I attended an English international school; my father was particularly insistent on this part, in memory of his late, Schottic first wife. There, I fenced sabre and played first baseman in baseball, and got excellent marks, and was on excellent terms of . Granted the circumstance was ensuring of this success though after a while of repeating this - you were just one of a hundred third culture kids going through the same thing. Elderly teachers would ask me souvenirs on my semi-annual homeland visits for their bonbons on desk. Norrish girls knew how to outskate me in hockey, something that to this day they tease me about, Drawkian boys may have had terrible shooting range, but they knew how to outrebound 10 to 1. But those peoples I were with, I knew one moment I would be with them and whatnot. Perhaps this was why the long-lasting companionships, lasted in this smallest of small worlds that I lived in, was not particularly memorable in individual spectrums.

The only definite event that happened and would ultimately cause me to force my return to the place I once vowed not to go again, happened right outside of it. It was just past the summer of 2015, when I was in Lebreton, Mzansi-Afrique; it was the very summer my father was rather shafted aside for a high-grade but extremely gruelling job in Lebreton Consulate as the Consulate General.....

UC stops Vietussia to stretch streak to 6

by Lindsay Enscoe
The Western Observer

Oigrad, United Vietussia--University of the Commonwealth took a large step towards qualifying for the NSCF playoffs with a 10-3 victory over host Vietussia Academy, before 52,600 at the Papa Vulcan Stadium.

The teams resumed the defensive stalemate they fought at Gleason Field in round 2 of the competition, with the Warrior defense coming out ahead once again, this time without the help of Mother Nature. They held the Vulcan rushing attack to 96 yards total, while forcing VA quarterback Shane Wolf into 3 interceptions on a night where the offenses on both sides found yards hard to come by.

UC opened the game with the ball, but were forced into the first of 9 punts by Joseph Davidson after only 4 plays. Vietussia fared no better on their opening possession, returning the ball to the Warriors at the same spot that they had occupied on 4th down just 1:33 earlier.

Commonwealth's QB James Knapke was unable to find the form which had seen him pass for over 300 yards in the previous 2 contests against a Vulcan defense which gave little space to the Warrior receiving corps.

UC running back James Cleveland was lost for the game with an injury to his knee in the first quarter, and Tony French--the scorer of the Vulcans only TD in the teams' previous meeting--also went down with a calf injury on the possession following, both victims of an increasingly physical battle.

It was the result of Wolf's 1st INT which allowed UC to break through to the lead. Malon Samuel returned a deflection off the hands of VA tight end Leslie Mueller 18 yards to set up a 42 yard Nick Fields FG with 5:12 remaining in the first half, the 3-0 UC lead holding up until the break.

Vietussia dodged a bullet on the opening drive of the third quarter; Wolf's off balance throw to Leon Wyatt on 3rd and 8 was picked off by Alfonso Mack and the Warriors were in great position to increase their lead. But the Vulcan defense held and Fields pushed his 35 yard kick wide right, allowing the home crowd a chance to breathe a sigh of relief.

As the punting duel stretched into the fourth quarter, both teams seemed to be unable to find a way to sustain a drive to make a difference in field position. But a 23 yard punt return by the Vulcans and a 15 yard pass interference against UC's Clint Stephens set up Vietussia's Lewis Love for a 39 yard field goal to tie the game at 3 with 6:01 remaining.

It was then a moment of deja vu, as Hunter Coleman took the kickoff back 61 yards before being brought down--almost an identical scenario as occurred in the first matchup, following a VA scoring drive--setting up the Warriors in position to steal a vital away victory. On the sixth straight running play of the drive, junior RB Donovan Wilson scored from the 2 yard line, and after Fields added the extra point UC led 10-3.

Wolf then led his Vietussia offense on their only real threatening drive on the night, advancing 41 yards to the Warrior 30. On 2nd and 4, DE Terrence Bush flushed Wolf from the pocket and the Vulcan QB aimed his pass straight at OLB Torrian Hampton, who capped off the Warrior defensive gem with an easy interception. Patric Hannon broke free for a 30 yard run on the first play from scrimmage, and Knapke kneeled down twice to give Commonwealth a well deserved, hard fought victory.

Warriors head coach Scott Newell was enthusiastic in his praise for the determination and effort of his team, "Wow. I think the last time I felt this kind of emotion was when we beat St Leon and knocked them out of winning the National Championship (a 21-18 win in the second to last game of 2012). We've gone 120 minutes against these guys and took every shot they offered, and they took every shot we could give. Full credit to Coach Nogueras and his players. Every game we play in this league we gain new respect for the people we come against. Our defense has risen to the occasion every week, and the team has answered the bell against every challenge. I still don't think we are finished with difficult games though. We might come through these last few conference games to qualify, but these teams we are scheduled against in the 3 weeks after are no field day. I think they all might be playoff teams, so we will have to figure out how to approach the way we prepare".

UC moves to 6-1 in the Mineral Conference and hosts New Jarwel University, who currently are winless on the season.

Highest attended sporting event in Banijan history sees Loyola-Istria defeats archrivals Northern Moravica on last second touchdown run by Isaka Jawara

Image
Isaka Jawara celebrates scoring the game-winning touchdown

ISTRIA- We, in this country, and even in the Celestia Conference, have been spoiled by the excellent pair of rivalry games that the conference leaders have played. The first battle by these two teams, at Mugisha II Memorial Stadium in Herzegovina City, was an absolutely extraordinary battle, for two teams fighting for supremacy within the conference. The offenses lit up the scoreboard, and the two teams went back and forth, with Isaka Jawara making every throw, every play, in front of a hostile red-out crowd, that resulted in a 1 point victory, a 38-37 victory for Northern Moravica, in a game that might simply go down as the game of the season. There was lead changes everywhere, and Northern Moravica won the game when their true freshman kicker hit a field goal from almost 55 yards out, and then they were simply able to run the clock out. It was a spectacular game, and that made the hype for the rematch even larger, especially since not only has neither team lost since that day, but Northern Moravica's defense has not even allowed a single point since that game, while the Blue Thunder put up 82 points in their last two games.

While the bar was extremely high for this game, you could argue it was met. The energy in this crowd was absolutely special, as the annual whiteout that the team has went spectacularly well, and gave the game quite a scene. With the addition of temporary seating for this rivalry game, it was the first sporting event in Banijan history that had a 6 figure attendance- 100,233 people attended this football game. Isaka Jawara was returning, and it was an excellent football team with a red-hot offense, going up against one of the most dominant defenses in the history of the NSCF, who had recorded 5 shutouts in their first 6 games, with the exception, of course, being Loyola-Istria's visit to Herzegovina City. This was a game that almost everyone in the country had circled on their calendars after the thriller in Herzegovina City in week 2, and boy, these two teams seem to never disappoint.

In the first quarter, both defenses stepped up and did not allow any points. This meant that Northern Moravica's consecutive quarters streak of shutout football went all the way to 17 straight quarters. We do not know the NSCF record for a shutout streak, but we imagine that Northern Moravica has to be close. They broke a school record, with the record of three consecutive shutouts set by Northern Moravica in NSCF 12, in their opening three games. However, you can never keep Isaka Jawara down for long, and he was always going to be cut loose in the second quarter. In that quarter, they had a 3rd and 9 from the Northern 47, and with the teams simply trading punts at this point, Alanso Isa decided to trust his quarterback. A run-pass option saw them attack the true freshman cornerback, Saihou Fadika, in the slot. Adras Kappas was able to beat him on a double move, and went long, and a perfectly thrown ball landed gently into the hands of Kappas at the 10, who was able to walk into the end zone for the game's first touchdown early in the 2nd quarter.

The crowd was excited, and the true freshman, Chae Heung-Kim, had to respond to a particularly freshly energized football crowd. Dobromir Margolin, the senior, decided to step up. The resulting Northern Moravica drive was 7 plays for 74 yards. What was Margolin's stat line on this drive? 5 receptions for 68 yards. He was targeted for the first 6 plays of this drive, and he caught five passes, with one being knocked away. And once Northern Moravica was at the six yard line, on the back of their senior wideout, he was able to find an open Odirile Tumelo in the end zone to score the team's first touchdown, to make sure that they could tie the game at 7. Neither team in this series has won an away game since NSCF 13, and Northern Moravica desperately wanted for that streak to end. They were not going to go down without a fight, even with 100,000 screaming Banijans.

The rest of the first half was the same as the first quarter, until there was 2:20 left in the half. Northern Moravica had to punt the ball, and they punted it to Blue Thunder returner Corrin Fairless, a true freshman from Ranoria. The true freshman returning kicks has been controversial, as Costas had two returns for touchdowns last season and was the NSCF 17 Special Teams Player of the Year. Regardless, the Ranorian finally showed why he was chosen to return kicks and punts over Costas, as when he fielded the football at the 27, he immediately made two men miss, and then ran the football pack 73 yards for a touchdown, to electrify this crowd and give the home team a 14-7 lead. That gave the true freshman, however, 2 minutes and 2 timeouts to try and respond, and he would make the most of it.

Chae Heung-Kim, showing incredible maturity for a true freshman in this kind of environment, drove his football team down the field. With Loyola-Istria bringing the heat, expected considering the hostile environment and the youth of Northern's quarterback, Quebecois Offensive Coordinator Joon Ho Kweon was designing an excellent gameplan, with quick hitters, and screens, designed to keep the Blue Thunder defense off-balance. Okparro scored a touchdown with 12 seconds left in the half, a 6 yard touchdown pass on a swing pass, to tie the game at 14 going into the break. It was an exciting game- not as many offensive fireworks as when the last time these two teams met, but still- it was an intriguing matchup to follow. Back and forth, excellent work, fundamental football, not a single penalty on either team in the first place. Who could complain?

Then, of course, halftime ended, and the third quarter came. Northern Moravica had an excellent drive- 14 plays, 71 yards, and 5:50 off of the clock. They mixed up playcalling, but the focus was a heavy dosage of their running back, Beluchi Okparro, and they were able to get inside the red zone. However, on third and goal from the 5, he threw the ball to what looked like a wide open Kutubo Colley, but Ranorian cornerback Corrin Fairless made a brilliant play. A ball that looked to be over his head in the corner of the end zone, he ran back right when the ball was thrown, and a full-length dive, he was just barely able to tip the ball just past the outstretched hands of Colley, out of the back of the end zone. It was a touchdown-saving deflection, and Northern had to settle for 3, giving the visitors their first lead of the ballgame, a 17-14 lead.

Then, disaster struck for the Blue Thunder. A touchback on the ensuing kickoff meant the Blue Thunder would start with the football at the 25 yard line. But, true freshman halfback Nathaniel Islan fumbled the football, as Tuelo Leruo, the senior middle linebacker, hit his opponent with his helmet on the football in the backfield, and the ball popped free. Defensive Tackle Molaodi Rotlhe came up with the football from under the pile, and all of a sudden, it was 17-14 Northern lead with the ball at their opponent's 22. Many Loyola-Istria fans were worried, and the defense had to step up to the plate. They were able to do so. After stuffing Okparro in the backfield on first down for a one yard loss, they had an 8 yard screen pass to set up 3rd and 3. But they brought on an extra linebacker for third and short in the red zone, and the defense's captain and leader, Aloysius Kabuye, made one of his 13 tackles, as he stuffed Okparro a yard in front of the line of scrimmage. Northern Moravica lined up to go for it on 4th and 1 from the 13, but with the crowd in a massive frenzy, they could not hear and the atmosphere forced a false start from sophomore guard Olefile Dithapelo, and then Northern was forced to kick, as they gained a 20-14 lead.

The Northern Moravica defense knew that they had to step up again, and they did so, forcing a 3 and out, and forcing Loyola-Istria to punt. Northern Moravica then had yet another long drive- 11 plays, 58 yards, and 5:12 off of the clock. But for the third series in a row, they were not able to convert on third down in the red zone, and had to kick yet another field goal, as they stretched their lead to 23-14. Still, a two possession lead late in the 3rd quarter, on the road. A defense that just came off of 4 straight shutouts heading into this game. But Isaka Jawara had plans of his own. He engineered his own long drive, stretching into the 4th quarter, after a blcok in the back on the kick return set Loyola all the way back to their own 11 yard line. But that was no matter for him.

Loyola-Istria went for 17 plays, and 7:43, making the drive last until just under the 10 minute mark in the 4th quarter. However, unlike Northern Moravica, Loyola finished the drive, with a 2 yard touchdown pass on 3rd and goal on a fade to Tight End Rayan Willsonton, who is a true freshman from Northwest Kalactin, and the game was now razor thin, with a 23-21 lead for the visitors. Northern Moravica went three and out, and then Loyola-Istria, getting the ball back with 7 minutes left, thought that they had their opportunity to win this game. It took 3 minutes to drive the length of the field, and with 4:15 left, they attempted what would have been the go-ahead field goal, a 37 yarder by freshman Ensa Gassama. However, the pressure got to him, and the kick was wide left, with Northern Moravica getting the football back.

He was extremely disappointed in himself, but this looked like their previous matchup. Northern Moravica getting the ball back late, and having to run the clock out. However, Okparro's second play from scrimmage in this drive changed everything. He had a run for a first down, and then on the next play, from the 39, he got the football back. He broke one open, breaking a tackle in the front 7, and going off to the races, in a foot race. Corrin Fairless, the Ranorian freshman cornerback, was able to barely catch him from behind, a shoestring tackle to barely trip up Okparro at the 3 yard line, saving what would have surely been a back breaking touchdown. With now under 3 minutes left and goal to go, Loyola-Istria knew that they were going to have to use their timeouts, but they also knew that they needed a stop. Who then stepped up? The senior middle linebacker pair.

Risto Besigye exploded into the backfield on the first play from scrimmage, forcing a 3 yard loss, and forcing a 2nd and goal from the six, allowing for a little margin of error. With the crowd going hysterical, doing anything they can to support their defense, Kabuye was able to catch Chae Heung-Kim, who was going to scramble up the middle, and stop the big quarterback for a one yard gain. forcing a 3rd and goal at the 5 yard line. It was tough, but with the Blue Thunder faithful all the way into it, all wearing white, Chae Heung-Kim was sacked by the captain, Aloysius Kabuye, to force a 4th and goal from the 12 yard line. The relatively easy chip shot meant that Northern Moravica had a 26-21 lead, meaning that the Blue Thunder had to score a touchdown, but since it wasn't a two possession game, they had a chance.

Putting the biggest game of the season into the hands of Isaka Jawara always seems like a good idea, and he did not disappoint. With 1:44 and one timeout to go, getting the ball at his own 23, he engineered a spectacular drive. He hit an out route on the first play, getting 12 yards and a first down. However, Jawara was sacked by senior defensive end Kawhi Kgolo for a loss of 7 yards on the next play, forcing the Blue Thunder to use their last timeout. What was he going to do? 2nd and 17, after a sack? Well, a 5 yard scramble out of bounds led to a 3rd and 12, and then a halfback screen led to a 9 yard gain. In the hurry up offense, they had a 4th and 3, and it was the ball game. Isaka Jawara, at the 42 and needing the 45, rolled right, and with nobody open, he had to run for it. He juked out a defender at the line of scrimmage, took a step forward, and dove for the marker, taking a hit from safety Klaus Levas in the process. When the chain gang came out, it turns out that he had gotten the first down by less than an inch- just barely getting the nose of the football beyond the yard to gain. But, he got there.

Of course, with under 50 seconds left, he needed to move the team further down the field. After a pair of incomplete passes, on third and 10, a post route up the middle to senior tight end Ismaela Baldeg netted them 24 yards, getting to the 31 with just over 30 seconds left. Another brilliant throw towards the sideline, and Anchises Athans made a brilliant catch on the far sideline at the 15. It was reviewed, and it was determined he just got one foot in before he went out of bounds. After a pair of incomplete passes however, they were at the 12 yard line with 13 seconds left, no timeouts, and down by 5. 3rd and 10, which means they'd have 2-3 chances to score.

On this 3rd and 10 play, the ball was on the right hash, and they had 4 receivers bunched to the far side of the field, with a running back in the backfield. He looked left, and there was nobody open, but nobody on the defensive side of the football was left on the right, with freshman linebacker Cyrano Kalivas, who was supposed to be covering that side, reading the tackle instead of the tight end(there was none) and blitzing. That left a gap on the right side for Jawara to hit. He exploded through that gap, and and 12 yards later, he was in the end zone standing up. He got up to celebrate, and the crowd was going ballistic. Here was the Blue Thunder, leading 27-26 with 7 seconds left in the ball game. They went for two, and the conversion was broken up in the end zone. A touchback on the ensuing kickoff, and Northern went straight for laterals, gaining 30 yards, but not nearly enough to reach the end zone. And that, was that, on this edition of the Nroth v. South Showdown.

If there's anything we've learned from these two rivalry games, it is that you simply cannot separate these two teams. They played two spectacular football games, and both games ended with the home team winning by a single point in regulation. Both have great quarterbacks, and both teams will leave it all on the field when they play one another. This will make the race towards the Celestia Conference championship quite interesting. As Banijan fans know by now, the conference champion is decided based on their conference record, the conference portion of the season. These two teams are running away with the conference. Both at 6-1 with three games remaining, they are running away with this conference. The next best team is a 4-3 Northern Dinagat State, but barring a miracle, they aren't winning the conference.

The first tiebreaker, is head to head wins, Since these two teams each beat each other once, on their home fields, that is the same. The next tiebreaker, is head to head point differential. This is where things get interesting. It is usually decided at this tiebreaker, especially when they've played twice. However, both teams won at home by a singular point, meaning each team's point differential against each other is +/-0, as each team has scored 64 points against the other. So there is no permanent tiebreaker established there. The next tiebreaker, is overall point differential. Northern Moravica, on the back of 5 shutouts, has a point differential of +127, while Loyola's is +121. It's just a 6 point margin, razor thin, and it's probably going to be the decider of who gets the conference's automatic playoff berth, and who has to get a wild card berth, either from the OSPI or the committee.

So we imagine that we will have a very interesting end to the season. Not only does each team need to win, they need to watch their margin of victory, which means things could play out very interestingly. Northern's last three games are home to Fair Haven State, then a visit to Northern Dinagat State, then a home game against winless Army Academy. Loyola's last three games are a visit to Ren Rep University, who is 1-5, then a visit to Fair Haven State, before playing Northern Dinagat State at home. Both Banijan schools will be heavily favored in all three of those games. However, with their failure to create any kind of separation between them whatsoever on the field, point differential will be the deciding factor of who wins this conference. Nobody is going to ever let up, because now, it's not just about wins- it's about how much you win by. We'll see how that effects the game-plans of these two coaches for the next three games. Will they be willing to rest starters at the end of blowouts? Will they be score watching? It will be a very intriguing storyline to watch as conference play winds down to a close.

UC to face New Jarwel, hope to avoid letdown
by Peter Brinson, National College Football Editor

When University of the Commonwealth kickoff their eighth Mineral Conference game tonight at Gleason Field, they hope to be able to avoid overlooking their opponents, the winless New Jarwel Blue Lions.

Following on from their emotional victory versus Vietussia Academy, the Warriors must remain focused on the the next game, according to senior RB Fred Coppet. "The seniors have really made it a priority in the lead-up not to get carried away and think that we have gotten past the toughest part of the schedule. We have tried to get the rest of the team to stay focused and mentally prepared'.

Coppet will be looking to get back on track after the Vulcans held him to just 56 yards. He knows there will be more opportunities for him, with his backfield partner James Cleveland being held out of this contest after injuring his knee in the last game. "James says he could play if he needed to, but I think the coaches want to give him a bit more time to recover. Between Donnie (Wilson), Pat (Hannon) and myself I think we'll be OK running the ball", said Coppet.
