Soccer - Season 34Previews The Top LeagueLast seasonSVV Schemerdrecht won their second straight championship after a title-worthy regular season and 10 championship group games that only made the gap between them and second placed
Maethoru SC larger - who, by the way, after a few mediocre seasons, are back and then some. The Capital Club not just had a decent team - they had a great one, including some starters that took the Dragonflies to new heights over the summer. Nephara was unfortunately a bit too good for us, but
Maethoru SC will be picked clean by foreign money grabbing all their players, so let's hope they have a plan B for when that happens. For now they'll be in the IFCF CL, though.
Leading the trio of clubs to represent us in the CC is
Advance Alara. They had it all in the regular season, but in the final 10 games they came apart. They scored more than any side in the Championship Group, but conceded nearly twice as many goals as any other as well, pushing them to third place overall - however, it confirms what several fans abroad already knew: Alara is on to something and their unique style of football might not have immediately given them silverware, it has given them an identity and a way to put other squads in trouble. No team can handle Alara's pace and attack, because no other team dared to build something like it.
Bruncester United AFC have risen from the dead to not just escape relegation, they snuck into the top half of the table, and rose further over the course of the Championship Group phase, to end up in 4th place before such hyped squads as Miradela, Aminey, and Staudum. The working class club in the southeast has pretty definitively won the battle for staying power in the region, with
Cirelbourne United down for the count. But before we concentrate on the bottom half of the table, there's one more club to represent us internationally:
Aminey CS. The big blue monster from our nation's entertainment capital faced a lot of pressure on countless years of 'just not it' but managed a fifth place and a CC appearance. The sixth and last team in the Championship Group is
Straudum VV, and despite another textbook defensive season (they keep finding these talented defenders!) they have been 'figured out' given that every club in Ko-oren is a tad defensive anyway. On 21 goals conceded across 32 league games, they finished on a negative goal difference and scoring goals remains a problem for the northerners.
The bottom six of the table looks as follows: in seventh, it's
Miradela GD. Instead of trying for a third title, they found themselves on the wrong half of the table but then destroyed the Relegation Group teams in their final 10 games. They have a decent squad, but it's safe to say that at their average age, their title window has closed.
Katashi-Kanatsu keep trying new things to see if they work, and while it's never catastrophical enough to relegate them, the Yoshimans can't find a formula that puts them in the top 6 either.
Cirelbourne United had to find a way to salvage a sure 12th place finish, and climbed to 9th in the process. Clever buying and selling, and a good youth system taking care of all of central and eastern Surbourneshire could get them an even better finish soon. Then it's
Maynard AFC, speaking of a clever business sense. Losing money in the Ounaian league first, but finding talent closer to home after all, the southwesterners have a core that should keep them in the Top League for a while. Then
Branvon CD saw their stars retire and just escaped relegation. Unfortunately it was
Tanques AOE to relegate in the end, on a miserable season that couldn't be salvaged by a few good games in the Relegation Group. They were 8 points behind the competition with ten fixtures to go - all fixtures against other almost relegators - and that just was too much.
And that means we have a new club in the Top League for the first time.
Couziers-Olympiques were 2nd division champions at the right time, and the francophone club will appear in the Top League with a massively changed squad, to help them adjust to the higher level.
Brighthaven Town came just short, and also
Castelo e Calvente CS and
Gehrenna FC were within a short distance of
Couziers-Olympiques in the end, but with just the single promotion spot that's a tough battle. Mawrystwyth and Ambergate City go back down to the third level, and in their place it's the first Greencastrian club to play this high up in a while:
Sydberg, as well as a third Intermare club:
Laringen AFC. The northern region is getting stuff done in football, after Schemerdrecht's championship too!
This seasonTeam: Maethoru SC
Stadium: Rikalathen Arena (39000) in Maethoru, Mayara
Founded: 1910
Championships: 1
Historical Championships: 9
Prediction: 1
Lineup: Theshendan- Bijstroom, Monurga, van Kalvenhaar- Scherpenkate, Bliase ^CMT, Ensaunden, Janoreirinthen, Vaugrenard- Robert ^APY, Donath ^NPH
As said,
Maethoru SC have bounced back from a few years without silverware, and now the championship record holders have done it again. Between a few starting Dragonflies, Theshendan, Ensaunden, Janoreirinthen, and Vaugrenard (yes, that's nearly half the team that finished second in the World Cup!!) this should be their easiest title yet. Eyes are on Van Kalvenhaar, a defender picked up straight from university, who could be the next Dragonfly coming from the Capital Club. Bolstered by two foreign strikers (what else are you going to do in the Park the Bus Country?), they have a dominating player in every position.
Team: Aminey CS
Stadium: Stade sur la Baie (70000) in Aminey, Côte Austral

Historical Championships: 0
Prediction: 2
Lineup: Hanazawa- de Breye ^OAM, Boulanger, Argall ^SRS, Deschanel- Delacruz ^BJK, Amawai, Checkered Flag ^EQS, Neville ^EFL- Erisia, Mirzadeh
Aminey CS have finally bested the pressure that comes from being the nation's largest club - in both money and fans. Years have gone past without the club ever ranking in the top six, but with a group that's been kept together for a while, they look like they could go places. Squad turnover is notoriously slow in Ko-oren at the top level, so once you're in this tier, you'll probably stay here for a while. It's all up to Checkered Flag and Erisia now. The midfield looks vulnerable, but that's compensated by the talent on the rest of the field.
Team: Schemerdrecht SVV
Stadium: Orange Bowl (54000) in Schemerdrecht, Intermare

Historical Championships: 0
Prediction: 3
Lineup: Goossen- Ewell, Sterling, Kobayashi ^HIN, Crumble ^EQS- Egmar ^KSK, Ulysse, Hilberdink, de Castro- Siebelt, Dhondt ^NQU
The two-time champions had one mission: keep the team together. They did, and with Goossen, Hilberdink, Dhondt, and Egmar, they can beat anyone. They have invested in the spine of the team, but look weak on both wings by posting all sorts of youngsters there - but at least they only get better. Ulysse is a great captain for them, leading a front three that will likely retire in the coming years, so if they want a third title, it's now.
Team: Couziers-Olympiques
Stadium: Stade Central (7100) in Linieux, Côte Austral
Championships: 0
Historical Championships: 0
Prediction: 4
Lineup: Siemeling- Olink, Anderson ^SNL, Agano- Odgers, yBharw, Aoriene, Roux ^ESH- Fillanes, Hekkert, Candy
Maybe the newly promoted side have been helped a bit too much by the KFA.
Couziers-Olympiques have feasted on ex-Tanques players, then immediately sold a few of them in the same transfer period, and that money went towards players they had already scouted before. They effectively built a Top League-ready squad across one season, then bolstered it with all manners of talent from the second division, that they already had an eye on but went unnoticed by the Top League clubs. The competition is ready to be shaken up a little, and the francophones are the perfect team to do it. Awaiting a stadium expansion, which should give them even better finances going forward, they have a team of incredibly young players that have plenty of room to grow, between Olink, Odgers, Fillanes, Agano, helped by foreign arrivals (and the oldest members of the squad), Roux and Anderson.
Team: Straudum VV
Stadium: Hazel Arena (18500) in Straudum, Sudaefjoll
Founded: 1995
Championships: 0
Historical Championships: 0
Prediction: 5
Lineup: Neihof- Aelisire, Archer, Dwan, Tuff ^DOG, Hellegeland- Brousseau, Inchcombe, Tez ^QUS- Virtanen ^SVJ, Ulawaya ^TJU
Sometimes you know what a team will do, and you still can't stop it. That's
Straudum VV for you - proud owners of the best back line in Ko-oren and the direct inspiration of the national team while we're at it. Neihof has some national team experience, and Aelisire, Dwan, Archer to probably gain some very soon, this is one of few teams with a good mix of ages and nationalities. The self-proclaimed 'best led team in the country' has some work to do, as it just cannot breach the IFCF spots. Maybe this year?
Team: Advance Alara
Stadium: Spider Stadium (21000) in Alara, Yoshima
Founded: 1964
Championships: 0
Historical Championships: 1
Prediction: 6
Lineup: Folkhard ^NPH- Mizuno, Shiba, Chu ^QCY, Jundy- Adachi, Ivančir ^ZRH, Arnold ^VLD, Richardson ^ZWZ- Okawa, Tsuchida
The polar opposites of the above,
Advance Alara are adventurous, attacking, and are (or rather, were) the only club in the Top League to solve problems by scoring more. A formula that proved successful and now is being replicated in places, it's still the Alaran club that leads the charge. From the east, it's a large group of young and foreign players, from Ivančir, Jundy, Tsuchida to keep play wide and provide goals, to Adachi, Okawa as promising teammates. Mizuno has had a strange offseason as well: not getting a call up to the national team, not having his contract extended at
Advance Alara, and a day before the deadline he was simply signed to a new contract. Fearing half a season without a team, he signed, and was named the captain in the very next week.
Team: Katashi-Kanatsu
Stadium: Suzumebachi Stadium (25000) in Katashi, Yoshima
Founded: 1901
Championships: 0
Historical Championships: 0
Prediction: 7
Lineup: Stewart ^AUD- Vatsu, yTismewch, Ardouin, Convery ^BRE- Yokota, Nakazono, Martis, Morris- Sonnel ^CMT, Graycrook ^SCT
Katashi-Kanatsu were always the big club from the east but that moniker is slowly shifting towards Alara. Meanwhile, Katashi has built a team with a clear vision of its own: widen the field, flood the midfield, and see what happens from there. Yokota is still the captain, and it's hard to imagine this squad without him, and with Martis, Ardouin, Vatsu, and Nakazono, Katashi has postponed the inevitable by a year: there are no players under 25 on the starting XI. Something will have to change at some point.
Team: Miradela GD
Stadium: Estádio Fortaleza (29000) in Santa Teresa, Finisterre
Founded: 1938
Championships: 2
Historical Championships: 1
Prediction: 8
Lineup: Munks- Benjamin, Steelshrift ^NPH, Bares- Magrath, Viera, Etxaurren ^AUD, Valdovinos- Salomon, Blair ^CBP, Noya
Since they lost their title to Tanques and later Schemerdrecht,
Miradela GD slipped into a downward spiral. Losing quality players from the championship squad, not finding the proper attackers to replace them, failing to strengthen the defence instead, and neglecting to bring in the youth that they need to avoid having to replace the entire team in a few years' time, they still have good players but it's not going anywhere. The lack of vision (or holding on to an obsolete one) is starting to do them harm, but with Benjamin, Valdovinos, Magrath, Etxaurren, and Salomon, they can hold off on relegation for a while, surely.
Team: Branvon CD
Stadium: Estádio Marítimo (28000) in Santa Teresa, Finisterre
Founded: 1902
Championships: 0
Historical Championships: 7
Prediction: 9
Lineup: Soumare ^ASU- Basquez, Gachet, Mulvahil, Cales- Reza, Shall ^EFL, Taraala ^MRN, Carter ^TJU- Vallotton, Novoa
Branvon CD have gone the opposite route of their cross-town rivals Miradela. While Miradela had two titles and then crashed, the working class heroes of
Branvon CD have been down low but have shown signs of life in later years. That said, they still don't have the means of their richer city-mates, and so they have a few very old players along with several pedigrees. Mulvahil and Gachet have been great finds, and with Vallotton and Reza to guide them, the team shows promise. It all breaks down in the midfield, where they still employ relatively expensive foreign players, but hasn't been their best line in a while. This team feels a little stuck in Season 31.
Team: Maynard AFC
Stadium: Armskirk Municipal Ground (26000) in Maynard, Gehrenna
Founded: 1928
Championships: 1
Historical Championships: 0
Prediction: 10
Lineup: Cholmondeley- Aberg , Suchet, Meynard ^EQS, Kildare, Read- Richey, Potter, Gillis- Maxwell, Steppe ^XAN
They're not the deadbeat 12th placed team anymore. And while they showed considerable promise last year, the magic has waned, the good vibes are still decent but not as great as they were, and the southwesterners are back where they, well, probably belong. They're not a top 6 squad, they're not the bottom overall team either. They still rely on Cholmondeley, Kildare, Read, and Steppe, and they hope to coast to another fine finish north of the relegation line, which is definitely among the possibilities. This team has vision, but it's more random directions rather than actual progress. This team could be anywhere from 4th to 12th.
Team: Bruncester United AFC
Stadium: Top Brass Arena (19500) in Bruncester, Surbourneshire
Founded: 1920
Championships: 0
Historical Championships: 0
Prediction: 11
Lineup: Morris- Gicquel, MacDermot ^BLN, Noordburg, Kitchingham, Gridley- Abel ^SLL, Gregory, de Villepin- Tjessem ^QUE, Gaunaurinthen
With impromptu World Cup star De Villepin, you would say
Bruncester United AFC has a more prominent place in Ko-orenite football. And with last season's 5th place, there's certainly a way in which this team adds to the league - let alone how they have Noordburg, Gregory, Kitchingham, as well as Gicquel of World Cup final fame, so it's strange why this team is so far down. That's when you look at how these players have performed in the last year, and De Villepin is 35 now, Noordburg has been downright unfortunate, and the left wing of the team, with Gridley and Gaunaurinthen, looks more like a third division duo sometimes. This team performed at its best last season, but what we've seen so far this might be the same team but at its worst.
Team: Cirelbourne United
Stadium: Quicksilver Stadium (15500) in Cirelbourne, Surbourneshire
Founded: 1926
Championships: 0
Historical Championships: 0
Prediction: 12
Lineup: Aeloviane- Rodas, Blijdenstein , Tomlinson ^TKT, Swadling- Shipton-Smith ^XAN, Quelch, Valente, Klensberg ^NQU- Dixon ^NWK, Turner
Cirelbourne United is back where it was last season, but then Tanques had an even worse year. This time, it looks likely that Cirelbourne goes down, and while they have Lew Turner who was incredibly productive in the World Cup qualifiers, the team's organisation has done nothing to surround him with equally good players. The few foreigners they attracted in recent years have not had the desired effect, or at least, their effect has waned a little, and have been dragged down along with the atmosphere for the entire team. The attitude towards youth players ('don't sign them') has seemingly backfired as well seeing as the eleven other clubs keep pulling diamond after diamond from the lower leagues, the universities, and the academies. Quelch, Tomlinson, and Shipton-Smith have obvious upsides that could see this team spared for this year... but at this point, it's hard to see any other team relegating.
Division TwoTeam: Tanques AOE (Stade Amandine (30000) in Étouille, Côte Austral)
Prediction: 1
Simply ranking teams 1-12 doesn't do justice just how far ahead of the rest
Tanques AOE are. And that's not a surprise: they held on to a decent part of their squad, which is still well over 50% composed of players with a career's worth of Top League experience. They should make it back up and should only get mild resistance from Sterrenwolde or
Sydberg. The fact they kept most of the foreigners, who should do most of the heavy lifting this year, helps as well. Interestingly it's the non-local Ko-orenite citizens who joined other teams... so look forward to Bittencourt, Helzinger, and Weaver to dominate a league that's beneath them. Additionally, there's Train, yLladdlog, and yChibwod, all three of which have been in Dragonfly contention at some point.
Team: Sterrenwolde FC (Noorderkroonpark (14500) in Sterrenwolde, Intermare)
Prediction: 2
Well, it's a little surprising that the northern team went this high up. It's not been very long since the team were in the third division after all, but it shows how the vision of the front office and- who are we kidding. Sterrenwolde is a big city with plenty of money going around, and they have put together a solid core with all kinds of pacy options out wide. Between Génin on goal, Dhentingun, Meredeth, and Parsons in midfield, and Breedland to support the strikers, they have several options to make this a season to remember. Their midfield is strong, the defence is alright, but scoring goals will be difficult for them.
Team: Sydberg (Cloudfield Palace (8800) in Greencaster, Surbourneshire)
Prediction: 3
Shooting up all the way from the third division to very high in the predictions for the upcoming second division,
Sydberg's rise is underlined by the increasing number of fans of association football in Greencaster. Technically,
Sydberg is a suburb with, as they say themselves, a distinct identity: the rest of the country sees them as 'basically Greencaster'. That was the one thing missing from the Greencastrian sports scene: they're dominant in pretty much everything, except soccer. And here it is, potentially: a lineup of players picked up from all over the country, including a few lucky signings in Pardoner and Ebina, who have readied this team for the task ahead.
Team: Castelo e Calvente CS (Edogense (16000) in Ferrovente, Finisterre)
Prediction: 4
A stable factor in the second division with a strong regional presence,
Castelo e Calvente CS want to become the third club of Finisterre. They already are, but what is better than to be at the highest level... and yet, in this season as well as in seasons past, it'll be hard for them. Always close, but never really in reach of that single promotion spot... and with a squad with local heroes and some mercenaries from the rest of the archipelago, the team can put in a valiant effort once again. With a very aggressive, high-pressing squad and a tremendous range of strikers, they can make things difficult for everyone. At the same time, outside of Parada in the back they're easy to pick off as well. That said, if Beaudouin, Gurses, and Moore can all get about 10 goals this year, who can stop the southeasterners?
Team: Teragaseki (Dokudo Stadium (12000) in
Teragaseki, Yoshima)
Prediction: 5
Teragaseki wasn't tipped to do well, but through some luck and some stable factors at the top of the club, here they are anyway. At 5th in the predictions, they're not likely to promote, but an international spot isn't beyond them. Living off of a stable diet of Katashi and Alara rejects, they have Wakasugi in goal, Mergakhinen as a defensive mid, and Murakami to bolster the attack, as well as Rampton and Metharom, who both were once promising talents but fell just below the Top League cutoff. This Yoshiman team is known for its losses to teams lower on the ladder though, so it remains to be seen if they can make good on the promises.
Team: Gehrenna FC (Kautherlugin Field (17500) in Gehrenna, Mayara)
Prediction: 6
The Capitals never were much for sports, let alone football, but after Maethoru's perennial succes, the other capitals have been building prestige projects of their own. From Gehrenna, it's
Gehrenna FC, with great players on the wings but not exactly the same quality inside. With Sirmauringun and Truin they have wing backs that can span the entire field, for the full 90 minutes. Hegan is an indomitable option in midfield, and as long as they can cross to Smitherman, they're not out of any battle. The team lacks a clear pivot: they have Delaclavan Rogers for that, but he's likely positioned a bit too far forward to bridge the defence and the offence.
Team: Arboren FC (Aeresa (10000) in Arboren, Aerellen)
Prediction: 7
In more examples of regionalism, the pride of the northeast is in with a shot as well. They've picked the practise fields of Aerellen and Noordrug clean, and it's yielded a lot of fine players that otherwise would've gone into gridiron or ice hockey. With Xannerian Johanssen as the centrepiece, the likes of Lagerkwist, Aelsine, Brownsmith, and ySaddas might do some damage. It'd be a shame if this team fell to the third division.
Team: Brighthaven Town (Sanders Field (3600) in Brighthaven, Surbourneshire)
Prediction: 8
Representing the southwest, and in particular the breadbasket of Ko-oren, which features a lot of smaller towns - and in turn lacks a single large population centre for the region to rally around - it's
Brighthaven Town. The calm, coastal town has quietly built a decent team that signs former Top Leaguers with ease: who wouldn't want to settle in what's probably the prettiest little region of the country? With Pinkerton, Dishatinden, Carbonneau, Oakden, Eleveld, Vashila, and Nijboer, they have a shot at the top four spots. The reason they're so far down is because there's often little rhyme or reason to their play, and the fact their best players could retire at any time.
Team: Huthwich & Iduloren FC (The Ovation Station (5000) in Huthwich, Gehrenna)
Prediction: 9
From being one of the better teams, equipped to take on the Top League one day, the team slipped down below other teams in the region, such as Gehrenna, Couziers, but at least still ahead of
Strongfair by a tiny margin. What happened? Well, they were forced to sell a few players here and there, their door sales weren't as high as they could be (hinging on a small stadium, with one of the better names, it has to be said), and after the finances, the on-field product suffers. They still attracted Nagamine, Kwant, and Aenisse, but the other positions have been a revolving door. It's hard to support the team for what it's going through right now. They need some stability at the top, and a clear plan will see them into the top half of the second division before long.
Team: WSR AFC (Uriagali Field (10000) in Eaglebury, West Strand Riding)
Prediction: 10
Relying heavily on West Strand Riding's talent,
WSR AFC is a labour of love that turned into everyone's second favourite club. Their unorthodox way of doing things, from player acquisition to play style, surprises friend and foe and rightfully attracts the 'weirder' players of the country. Vermelho is the newest addition to a fun squad. Mind you, this is not a team to follow if you're just about good results - and yes, there's clubs like that even in Ko-oren.
Team: Strongfair (Fortune Valley (6100) in
Strongfair, Gehrenna)
Prediction: 11
Bad luck and injuries are holding this team back for the second straight year. Looking at the kind of names they have, this team sounds like it should be better. Looking on who's actually in the dressing room over the weekend, it's obvious that this team could easily be in better shape. Let's hope this season is just a write-off, and not a relegation year. Wareham, Granet, Tar, Miyahara, and Ares... there are decent names here but it's not enough if the starting XI differs 30% from last week's starters week by week.
Team: Laringen AFC (Duivelsveld (13700) in Laringen, Intermare)
Prediction: 12
They just came up, but might as well drop straight down. The extra cash from promoting went missing fairly quickly, and outside of some players moving to
Laringen AFC on a nostalgia factor, there's a depressing core of players that dropped out of the second division for a reason. Their rock-solid playing style masked their problems one division lower, but they will be torn apart if they don't improve at this level.
Division ThreeDivision 3aThe southern half of the country is represented at this level, with some names that are well known to followers of the second division. Ambergate, Leeshire, Grainshire are all victims of the southwestern curse: there are a lot of good teams there, but not enough oomph to propel one of them to new heights - see Brighthaven. There's also a few teams from Yoshima, one Finisterran - who might as well have the best papers to promote - and the remaining Mawryshire team. Some of the better names include Aviansola Eden, Limecroft & Abyss FC (a merger between two towns that are slowly emptying out), but it's probably Llandy FC, Soothill, or Oceanside that are most likely to go up.
Division 3bSomewhat ignored after 3a, 3b actually holds some of the more structured squads of lower division football. Mawrystwyth was forced in this one despite being pretty southern, and apart from that there are teams all the way from Sokrona and the river the Linde to northwest coast Myaranowra and Nyashawill, as well as the overflow of Intermare and Mayara teams. The names here aren't as good, so we'll stick to the likely promotors: Mawrystwyth, Senoren FC, Amandine AdF, and Nyashawill.
