After 22 rounds, it's Maethoru SC's to lose once again, but Aminey CS think they have a shot - despite the fact that the final 10 rounds have been Maethoru's time to shine almost every season. If the All Greens didn't lead the table after 22 games, they'd damn well make sure they were champions again after the last 10. The Katashi derby are sitting in 3rd and 4th, with Katashi-Kanatsu happy that their investments paid off, and Katashi Azula dumbfounded that the rest of the league let them get that far. Schemerdrecht SVV are in after a few years in 10th place, and finally Miradela GD had expected more - basically anything short of title contention - but at least they're in the top six.
The relegation group has Advance Alara, a club that switches from top six to bottom six every season without ever being in relegation danger - their weird play style remains elusive for any defensive gameplanner, even if it doesn't always pay off. Amandine AdF are in eighth, and with the Azula that proves that just promoted teams are always difficult to account for, or at least, the Top League regularly sees these new clubs come in top eight. Straudum VV in ninth is the big surprise here. What happened? A decade of top three finishes... and now this? It's true they lost their culture defining players to retirement, but the replacements were better than this... right? Tanques AOE struggle to carve out a niche after promotion, while before that they were certain to have a top 3 midfield and dominate games. Now, not so much. Gehrenna FC have been avoiding relegation despite bottom three finishes for a while. WSR AFC is also a big surprise: they've been competing for the top six most years - and to drop to 12th with a near impossible task to evade relegation? What happened there?
A small overview of the best football of each round, with a pretty big Championship Group focus:
23: Katashi Azula 2-1 Katashi-Kanatsu the Championship Group kicks off with the brother feud in the east. The Azula hurt Kanatsu where they feel it most: on national TV they go down versus the smaller brother and Azula are even in a Champions League spot! And that's with Nam's 87th minute winner, too. Schemerdrecht SVV beat Miradela GD with a 90+2 1-0 win, which really harms the latter's chances for the Champions League - they really thought they built a CL-level squad. Maethoru SC - Aminey CS was also on the menu, but a stupid own goal in the first 6 minutes was the only goal of the game - shambles. Is that the best football on offer? In the bottom six, it's all about Advance Alara 5-2 Amandine AdF, of course. Or Gehrenna FC 4-3 WSR AFC - all seven goals scored in the first half hour.
24: Katashi Azula 3-2 Maethoru SC the Capital Club's lead shrinks to almost nothing with two opening losses. It's 3-0 for the Azula before the All Greens strike back. Miradela GD defeats Aminey CS and the only thing that happens is that the top six is all within three points of one another on the final table (22+2 matchdays). Schemerdrecht SVV wins 4-3 at Katashi-Kanatsu after a 4-1 lead - they almost mess that up. It can't be closer! Straudum VV concede three goals - which they do about once every two years - to, you guessed it, Advance Alara.
25: Maethoru SC 5-2 Katashi-Kanatsu Goals aplenty! It's 4-0 after 70 minutes and then we get a crazy end to a game that should have been safely tucked away by then. Three seemingly simple points for the record champions, but after two losses they so needed this to avoid worse. Aminey CS and Miradela GD both win as well, forming a top three of sorts.
26: Aminey CS 4-4 Katashi Azula three draws in the Championship Group. It's 4-1 for Aminey just after the half, but Azula climb back into it. Mental resilience has not been a problem for them, and they've made up for some glaring holes in the roster with it. How long will this fairy tale last? Advance Alara picks up a win while Straudum VV can't get past Amandine AdF. The bottom six, because of WSR AFC's huge problems, is more or less set though.
27: Katashi-Kanatsu 0-2 Aminey CS the Suzumebachi isn't the fortress they thought it to be as Aminey easily picks up three points here. Maethoru SC beats Miradela GD, which would have been the best game of the weekend if it wasn't for the nervous and occasional bad play there. Miradela doesn't want to take risks - but gives away goals anyway, and Maethoru play their usual down tempo style if they want to frustrate opponents. It worked. In the bottom six, WSR AFC defeats Advance Alara 2-3 in Alara's Spider Stadium. We also get six goals in the derby of south Cote Austral: Tanques AOE 3-3 Amandine AdF. Fans abroad might not know how close these teams are to each other, but you may describe this as a city derby, basically!
28: Aminey CS 3-2 Maethoru SC and that might well do it. Aminey have all the momentum, Maethoru had already lost their 6-point lead, but more importantly, they don't play like the team that in years past made the final 10 rounds - against the toughest opponents - look easy. If the belief isn't there, with so much to play for, what's next? Aminey don't have the best of the game but three early goals destroy Maethoru's spirit. The Blues know they don't have to do too much for the win after that. There's also a victory for Katashi-Kanatsu versus Azula - the fourth and final derby of the season, and Kanatsu laugh last.
29: Aminey CS 1-0 Miradela GD the Blues keep winning, and with the second home win in a row, against another top 3 team, who can stop them? The team in the Stade sur la Baie got hot at the exact right moment and they're riding this high into a title - surely. Miradela's chances at making the top three are alive but they'll need about 6 points (or more) from the final three games. Advance Alara lose 1-2 at home to Straudum VV in a clash of styles. Hyper-attacking Alara and hyper-defensive Straudum, and the defence wins - apt. Also, Maethoru SC tie Katashi Azula 3-3 which helps neither team, but it's all part of Maethoru's late season meltdown.
30: Miradela GD 3-2 Katashi Azula it's the same few clubs we keep focusing on. Yes, Schemerdrecht are doing things in the top six but they're mostly just fighting for fourth place with both Katashis, but either way that's ending in Challenger Cup football. There's an avenue for the Champions League, but it's narrow. Either way, Miradela get a dominant win in the style that they were supposed to play all year. It took a while to forge these individuals in a team, but they're rolling now - just in time to cut off the Katashis and Schemerdrecht and get the third Champions League spot - can they hold on?
31: Katashi Azula 1-0 Aminey CS is it all falling apart? Azula to the CL and Aminey almost fall out of first place as Maethoru SC destroy Schemerdrecht SVV 3-0. The cursed timeline is here. Katashi-Kanatsu did win but all that did for them is have Azula overtake Miradela for third place. Nam scores after 78 minutes for another late Azula win, while Aminey tried to play their technical style but they can't find a way through. Advance Alara win 4-1 to secure the 7th spot for now - which means VCI - as WSR AFC win 3-0 in Étouille for what's pretty much their second-last Top League game for a while.
32: Miradela GD 3-1 Maethoru SC Miradela take back third, and more importantly, Maethoru lose! That means that whatever Aminey does - they're champions anyway. It's never great if the result happens because of your rival failing but that means that the final home game versus Katashi-Kanatsu is moot - and the biggest party on the Bay coast that weekend. Number scores twice - we've seen that episode before. Lastly, Katashi Azula can't beat Schemerdrecht SVV and so the top three involves Aminey, Maethoru, and Miradela, in that order. What is it, season 30? In the bottom six, Amandine AdF loses the South Cote Austral battle to Tanques AOE, which means that Amandine are 11th in a massively close midtable.
I mean, look at the aggregate table. Amandine two points behind three clubs that all narrowly escape the playoffs - and WSR is left in dead last by a mile and then some. Straudum VV escapes the fray with a VCI spot only four points out of the relegation zone! In the top six, there's a clearly defined top two (used to be top three, but Straudum...) as Azula post the best debut season in recent memory and miss out on the Champions League on goal difference. Schemerdrecht get their best finish in a long time with 5th - that used to be their bread and butter before dipping to 10th and 9th for a half a decade. Tanques AOE are building something nice, and Advance Alara and Gehrenna FC know to keep improving. Alara's style help them most of the time but if you're not winning games when you score three goals - maybe you deserve a relegation playoff every now and again.

What should have been a joyful week in Eaglebury with the annual horticultural expos kicking off ended in disaster for sports fans. WSR AFC are relegated to the Second Division. To avoid that fate, the team would have had to win its last six games in a row, which is a rough call for any team. The young team of Violet Wakefield have been a fantastic disrupting force in the Top League for nearly ten seasons, but it's coming to a close now. Wakefield was fired hours later, after she commented that "this team has so much fight left in it. We'll learn from this and come back stronger," but the board didn't believe that. What happens next might be the usual thing for relegating teams: selling off assets and picking up youngsters in a bid to go straight back up. Contracts with foreign players will be difficult to maintain, with the financial impact from a new Angus Jack contract looming.
That said, there are still some games to play. Sujimbee Haggigana, star left fullback: "I think we all still believe in the mission this team is on. I can't believe this is how it ends... [pause] I remember when WSR promoted, I wasn't even in the youth yet - this club deserves better. We let the fans down, and we let ourselves down. But that's the Top League nowadays, it's ruthless."
He avoided questions about his future with the club. Being just 19, he can afford to stay there and develop, like players such as Mellowby at Maynard or yOraenaig at Sydberg. The Second Division isn't a graveyard of has-beens and never-wills, the Second Division has some quality clubs. It's not the division WSR once escaped: it professionalised, and the level of play is as high as in any second tier in the multiverse, aided by there just being 12 clubs at the highest level. As the chairman put it: "The Second Division isn't the death of a club anymore. It presents its own opportunities. We've been planning behind the scenes as we were sorted into the bottom six, and unfortunately we'll have to unravel those plans further. But we believe we can keep most contracts on board. Again, the second tier isn't that much of a step down anymore."
Dejection in the stands follows. Fan groups have announced some action for next home game, but it's likely those will not exactly be in support of the club.
Shortly after Emeline Millet's first title, she carried Aminey to a second one. Critics might point at the transfer budget, but know that no big Ko-orenite club managed to land even half of its targets. This isn't just eleven individuals, it's a team. With the amazing Bonstirthinden, bought from Miradela, and the top scorer Archer, and dynamo Oddkellsson in midfield, as well as Darmeni legend Ó Madaidhín in defence, this is a team that, at every position, has a top 3 player in the league. Archer: "We always knew there was something special brewing in Aminey. I love it here!"
After the captain, the coach, and the stars of the squad, the unsung heroes were given a minute in the spotlight when they were the next ones to lift the trophy. Genevieve Orville did a lot of heavy lifting, playing both intelligently and fiercely, turning the team's right side into a bigger strength than Batchelor's left side. Pair that with Boulanger's indomitable fullback play and the architecture of the team is clear. Millet knew that she had something special to work with, with most teams focusing on the left win with Batchelor, Finisterrais, and Rurindhaunden, much bigger names. As a result, it was Orville and Boulanger who picked up most MOTMs - now the MOTM is awarded to 'left field' candidates more often than not. Still, the championship started there.
"The Blue Dynasty," in response to the 'green dynasty' of Maethoru, the banners read. The rivalry with Maethoru is well and truly alive and strong. There's a reason why that match has at least three nicknames: it's that definining for Ko-oren's sporting, social, and even political landscape. And what a finish it was. The Blues tore into the Greens' lead and did what for years only Maethoru could: play 10 straight games against the best of the Top League after an already grueling season and come out as victors.
Where did it all go wrong? Gustavo Franco's first year in charge of Straudum VV didn't go as planned. Everyone within the club braced for a worse year, but to briefly battle relegation was never a concern. And then miss out on IFCF football altogether will be a major factor for the club's budget next year, which already was smaller than the budgets the club worked with around the championship years. Is this the end of a top club in the north?
Franco is to blame, say some around the club. Franco is a victim of last summer, say sources closer to the club. Players have been very political around the issue, with most being aware of the challenges the board faced last summer. An aging squad, stars leaving, and some necessary sales - Franco would always have a tough job gluing this team back together. In the end, the only young player contracted in the offseason was Vaillancourt, who faced a lot of criticism for not being exactly the kind of player that left previously - and he could never be that in such a short term. Drakenberg and Wakaizumi were signed for being veterans, going against the DNA of the club, which is finding young players and getting them NT-ready as an alternative to Maethoru's closed off system and Aminey's media circus, and for the better part of two decades, it worked. Defensive talents would first consider signing for Straudum, but those days are over. Defenders are still a huge export out of the Top League, but the heyday seems over, much like Straudum's.
For next season, Tomlinson and Neihof look towards leaving - retiring, in fact. That leaves Straudum with a complete defensive overhaul, with five out of six players turning over in two offseasons. If the club survives this and comes back to the IFCF: well done, and you deserve your reputation. If not: it's been 15 amazing years. The level of competition is incredible, and that a well-respected WSR AFC could so dramatically fall down is a testament to how good the league's become, and how much small things matter. For now, however, the board is sticking with Franco, and it looks like the club will try to make at least one more push with the current core - despite being the second oldest club in the league... after Maethoru.
Aminey has taken steps before this season and it's paying off. Maethoru and Straudum have to answer the call, lest the Top League looks very differently one or two years from now. Clubs are in flux, and Miradela's stock is rising too - and can anyone rise with them and the Blues?

Through a hell of a final stretch, Maynard AFC will promote back to the highest echelon of Ko-orenite club football! The story of the season was Coloruna de Paraiso's improbable run at the top of the table but they were running on fumes towards the end of spring, and in the end they fall short by four points. Was it focus, fitness, or was it just that Maynard were impossible to beat towards the end? Either way, the southwest remains represented in the Top League despite WSR's relegation, and it's - again - not a club from Willowbourne or Greencaster that goes up. Coloruna might still join them through playoffs, and SC Sokrona get a small reward as well, in the sense of the remaining playoff spot. It's Sokrona at Coloruna for round one, and that winner gets to host the Top League's number 11 - Amandine AdF - and the winner goes/stays up. The success of promoted teams and the small gap between the top two divisions might convince the KFA to expand promotion/relegation even further.
Falling just short - on goal difference - are Bruncester United AFC, who are one of the twelve original Top League teams as well but can't find a way back up so far. Castelo e Calvente CS were in the battle until the last two weeks as well. The rest were all closer to relegation than promotion: Branvon CD (last year's relegators), Sydberg Olympia, Arboren FC, and Fukushira Guerilla. There's a good geographic spread at the second level with all of these teams staying in: mainland's southeast, southwest, northeast, and a team from the eastern islands, respectively. Sterrenwolde FC dip into the relegation playoffs, where their opponents will be either Blanrasco Borealis or April Bassin FC, who are the teams who finished second in the third division South and North respectively. So either we stick to a northern team, or we get another Finisterre team going up (joining Miradela, Branvon, Castelo, and Coloruna!), or it's a team from a place that's as of yet not represented among top teams, just north of the capitals.
That area has a decent club scene, with April Bassin, Myaranowra, and Nyashawill - and you might even count Laringen and Rozenvoorde, and to stretch it further, Tarrashall - but nothing in the top two divisions yet.
Going straight down are Vierciennes Victory, whose surprise promotion from the third already wasn't well received last season, and Teragaseki. The latter were a really good addition to the league for a while, but stagnation led to regression, led to relegation. Coming up are the champions of the third divisions: Odahayashi Revolution (eastern, like Alara, the Katashis, and Fukushira), and Couziers-Olympiques, who are back after a short absence, and they're from Linieux, near Aminey.

Exclusive Interview: Magdalene Buchanan!
The Maynard AFC owner opens up about the struggles of the last half decade and the club's rise after near-bankruptcy. Mrs. Buchanan, thanks for sitting down with us. It must have been interesting being a fly on the wall in the Maynard front office for the last few years, what have you and the club done differently to get where we are?
"It feels like we didn't do much else than before. We took risks, and we still do, and in the past they didn't pan out, and now they do. That goes for the business ventures and the hiring and firing. I'm still fairly well involved with daily operations, and seeing how we signed guys like Mellowby and Scarshell from close by and going for risky transfers from far away with Casabjan and Docherty and seeing it all pan out is so rewarding. I honestly think I gave up years of my life with how the Ounaian league was run, but at the time it was such a good investment. The same goes for the transfers last season, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. But I knew it was always going to go right - it had to."
What do you mean, it had to?
"All of my experience and results, all of my achievements in the past - it's not luck. I built this club, I got us back up to the top."
And what about the calls for resignation up to last summer?
"Those fans can *** off. Not everyone is an expert. Sports fans are the Dunning-Kruger effect at work."
