General Information
Gridiron Football is one of Ko-oren's biggest sports. It is mostly popular in the southwest-to-northeast band, with the biggest fandom in the northeast. The KGL (Ko-orenite Gridiron League) is the most attended league in Ko-oren, because demand is fairly high but seasons are short - so supply is low.

There are 12 teams, divided into two divisions, East and West. Every team plays their own division twice (home and away) and the other division once (three home, three away) for 16 games total.

The league is supported by a second division consisting of 12 teams affiliated to one of the 12 KGL teams. This second division functions as a developmental league, where personnel turnover is high.

The season's structure is as follows:
Week 1: Divisional game, non-rivalry
Week 2: Divisional game, non-rivalry
Week 3: Extra-divisional game, Rural game
Week 4: Extra-divisional game, Rural game
Week 5: Extra-divisional game

Week 17: Divisional semifinals
Week 18: Ko-oren Bowl

Week 11 is structured as follows: (noon = 12 pm start, evening = 4 pm start, night = 8 pm start)
FRI night = Greencaster-Willowbourne
SAT evening= Noordrug-Aerellen
SAT night = Sterrenwolde-Aminey
SUN noon = Eaglebury-Mawryshire
SUN evening = Schemerdrecht derby
SUN night = Mayara derby

Developmental leagues
Ko-oren is home to two leagues, 12 teams each, that feed right into the Ko-orenite Top League. One league is formed around talented young players aged 18-22 (D-league, or developmental league), the other is for players of any age (KG2-League). Every team in the D or KG2-leagues is affiliated with one team in the Top League, and operates on the pro team's budget. There are, however, a lot of trades and swaps between KG2 teams. Players in the D-league are usually kept until age 23, after which they either go to the professional team, to the affiliated KG2 team, or traded to another KG2 team.

General Information
The Ko-orenite soccer league, the Ko-orenite Top League, is played between 12 teams from 8 different subdivisions.

In its long history, there have been many competition formats, that varied between 28 and 42-match seasons, and 12 to 20 teams. The current format sees every team play every other team twice for 22 games. Then, the table is split into two groups of six: the top 6 and the bottom 6, and each group is another double round robin (home and away), for a total of 32 games. The final table adds the first 22 to the final 10. The top 6's best team is crowned champion, and will represent Ko-oren in the CC and the AOCL. The next three teams will go to the Globe Cup. The winner of the bottom 6 will go to the VCIAPP.

There is no promotion/relegation system in place, but there is a cup competition played between teams from the Top League and teams from other leagues. In rare cases, a Top League team is swapped out for a team from a lower league in case of a long stretch of bad results and a good candidate to replace them.

Derbies
The Santa Teresa derby: Miradela vs Branvón. Miradela represents the well-off parts of the city and was one of the last clubs to function purely as an amateur club. Branvón is the club of the socialists, the working class, and one of Ko-oren's first professional teams.
The Metal derby: Bruncester vs Cirelbourne. The city names are even pronounced as bronze and silver locally. These two teams are located close together in an area of Ko-oren that otherwise has few sports going around, and now both cities have fallen on hard times, there's a lot of pressure on the soccer teams to lift spirits and put the cities on the map. Both are mining cities with working class populations.
The Aminey derby: Tanques vs Aminey. Aminey is the metropolitan club with the bigger name and more money, while Tanques has always favoured a steady organisation, developing the squad through youth teams, and somewhat conservative tactics.
The Eternal derby: Aminey vs Maethoru. Maethoru has had a long history of being Ko-oren's best and biggest team, while Aminey has always taken every opportunity to take that crown from Maethoru.

Greater Ko-orenite Cup

During the season, there is also a seven round cup tournament held, involving the 12 Top League teams, together with the three second divisions, the two university leagues and the two semi-professional third divisions.

Second, third and university divisions

Ko-oren has three second divisions:
- Yoshima 2nd Division (Y2D)
- Northern Ko-orenite 2nd Division (NK2D). The NK2D is for teams from Aerellen, Poolrugge, Sudaefjoll, Intermare, Mayara and West Strand Riding.
- Southern Ko-orenite 2nd Division (SK2D). The SK2D is for teams from Mawryshire, Gehrenna, Surbourneshire, Côte Austral and Finisterre.

Every remaining semi-professional team plays in a third division. There are currently two third divisions:
- Northern Ko-orenite 3rd Division (NK3D). The NK3D is for teams from Yoshima, Aerellen, Poolrugge, Sudaefjoll, Intermare, Mayara and West Strand Riding.
- Southern Ko-orenite 3rd Division (SK3D). The SK3D is for teams from Mawryshire, Gehrenna, Surbourneshire, Côte Austral, and Finisterre.

In addition to these, Ko-oren has two University Divisions for teams that are affiliated with a university. In these leagues, scheduling is adjusted so students will not play important games, and often no games at all, during crucial points in the semester.

Rugby Union

Index
- General Information
- Teams
- History/Lists

General Information
In this league, all teams play a home and away fixture against every other team, for a total of 22 games. Rugby union is a fairly rural sport in Ko-oren, having spread to most of the western half of the nation. That said, the further west you go, the more people will be into the game. Areas with low population, such as West Strand Riding, can still support two teams and Mawryshire even supports three (albeit on a much larger population). There is also considerable support in the two large cities of the region, Greencaster and Willowbourne.

The Tarrashall Travellers and the Mayara Wanderers are travelling teams. The Tarrashall team play 50% of their home games in Tarrashall, which is why that town is listed as their home base. The rest of their games are played in Jillong and Aralla. For the Wanderers, they play in the four closely connected cities on the west end of the Bay of Ko-oren, playing three games in three cities and two in the fourth.

Rugby union is a sport many in Ko-oren tune in to. The sport is among the biggest seven in the country, though it might be seventh in that list. The lack of support in other large markets contributes to this, and having several teams in quite small towns does not help either. Still, the sport is very much alive and not in decline.

Rivalries
Games between the following are always a sight to behold:
[*]Ansonville vs Greencaster: rural Ansonville challenges urban Greencaster.
[*]Willowbourne vs Greencaster: Ko-oren's largest two cities are always at odds.
[*]Aubury vs Maynard vs Idyllwild: in the shadow of larger Willowbourne, the other Gehrenna teams are a little too close for comfort.

Other competitions
During the season, the four representative teams of West Strand Riding, Mawryshire, Gehrenna and Surbourneshire play each other home and away.

For secondary competitions, there are the Greater Willowbourne Union and the West Surbourneshire Union, each containing 12 teams. There is also the Mawryshire Union, but most players first go to the GWU or WSU before starting play in the professional competition.

Rugby League

Index
- General Information
- Teams
- History/Lists

General Information
Rugby League is played in Côte Austral, Finisterre and Yoshima, in a completely different area from Union. The two sports were introduced on two separate occasions to Ko-oren and both found their own fanbases. It is the largest sport outside of baseball in Yoshima and Finisterre, and in Côte Austral, it is the largest sport. All in all, the sport is very much alive and draws spectators from beyond these three subdivisions.

In Yoshima, the athletic aspect of the sport is stressed. Stamina, agility, speed is key in their style. On the mainland, power and muscle are the key ingredients. Therefore you'll see bigger forwards and a more defensive style in Côte Austral and Finisterre, and a quicker game in Yoshima. Anywhere in Ko-oren, the kicking game is extremely important and trained. Teams often have one or even two players who have few responsibilities other than passing the ball and kicking conversions. Grubber kicks are also a field of study on their own in the Ko-orenite game. The preferred style of defence is pressuring the opponent into making a mistake.

Rivalries
With so many teams close together, there's bound to be some grudges.
[*] Wasps vs Hawks: the battle for Katashi.
[*] Santa Teresa vs Ferrovente: Finisterre has two cities, and they couldn't be more different.
[*] Buffaloes vs Owls: the battle for Aminey.
[*] Linieux Harriers vs Selesi Dragons: the jetlag rivalry. There is a long commute between the two, as both aren't close to an airport either.

Other competitions
The representative teams of Côte Austral, Finisterre, Yoshima and Leleia play each other home and away during the season.

There are two secondary leagues: the Yoshima League and the Côte Austral/Finisterre League.

General Information
Cricket is one of Ko-oren's most popular sports, which really took off after sudden population growth and economic boom in Ko-oren's southwest. This remains the area where cricket is popular, in other areas, cricket has to share its popularity with baseball, ice hockey and basketball.

First-class four day cricket is played by six teams. One-day List A cricket is played by the same six teams. For T20, the nation is divided completely differently, allowing twelve teams to compete. First-class cricket is played all through the summer season. List A cricket is played early in the season, while T20 is played at the end of the season.

General Information
What cricket is to the southwest, baseball is to the southeast. In a relatively warm climate, compared to the rest of Ko-oren, baseball is a sport that can be played almost year-round and enjoys massive popularity in two subdivisions of the country that actually aren't all that similar. In the peninsula of Finisterre, baseball only rivals field hockey and soccer for most popular sport, and in Yoshima, it's rugby union and soccer.

The only rivalries in the sport are within these two subdivisions. Yoshima doesn't rival Finisterre at all, but Santa Teresa and Ferrovente, both within Finisterre, do. Yoshima has an even bigger baseball culture, however. Its four islands all have some islander pride.

Rivalries
  • Giants vs Generals: the cross-town Katashi derby.
  • Aonishi vs Arakura: the blue-collar derby of both Selesi island teams.
  • Stars vs Whales: the Finisterre derby.
  • Echizen vs Teragaseki: two fairly closely located, proud teams. Both used the colour orange and were named Dragons - so one switched to red, the other changed their name.
  • Admirals vs Generals: the two most successful teams of the league, that have met in the league finals often.

Secondary leagues
There are a few secondary leagues, but they do not play as often as the professional league by a long shot. The following exist:
- Yoshima League (Considered the best minor league) - 88 games
- Finisterre League (Considered the second best minor league) - 88 games
- Katashi League (Short season) - 44 games
- Western League (Short season, middle of summer) - 22 games

Ko-orenite Football

Ko-orenite Football is popular all over Ko-oren - but it faces the problems that pre-industrial sports faced. The rules have been written down, but from region to region, people just stick to their own rules. There are many rulesets, though most rely on the same set of skills: kicking a round ball, catching it, and a great majority has extra rules (penalties) about the ball hitting the ground. Two codes have emerged as large, important codes: the Northern game and the Eastern game. The Ko-orenite Football season revolves around these two: they're the only two to be played by professionals.

The Northern game
In the Northern game, one team is in possession, and that team can score up to 6 points per inning (think baseball). Per inning, the team can score three points from field play (1 point for reaching the halfway line, 1 point for receiving the ball in the opponent's side right corner, 1 point for the same, but on the left), and three points from finishing their inning (1 point for kicking the ball across the back line, 2 points for kicking it through uprights, 3 for kicking it between the uprights under the crossbar - a soccer goal). The team in possession has three attempts to do this - an attempt ends when the ball hits the ground (much like 3 outs in baseball). Meanwhile, the defence can intercept the ball and kick it across the possession team's back line for 2 points, ending not just the attempt but also the inning. There are six innings per team per game, which are set to a time limit of six minutes per inning per team (12 minutes per inning total, 72 minutes max for a game). A player that has caught the ball may not advance more than six steps/six seconds before they have to pass. A pass is either kicking the ball or striking it with a fist from the palm. Contact between players is not allowed, though referees are typically lenient when two players from different teams try to catch a ball heading their way - but even then, even a little contact will draw a foul.

In short:
6 innings per team - 3 attempts per inning.
6 minutes per inning.
6 points max per inning, -2 points at the worst.

The Eastern game
In the Eastern game, either team can be in possession and the ball switches teams often. The only ways of scoring are by getting the ball to the opponent's back line: across the line is a point, between the uprights is two points, and between the uprights + under the crossbar is three points. If the ball is intercepted or after a point is scored, the 'defending' team will get the ball. If the ball hits the ground, the kicking team (in most cases) will concede the ball to the 'defending' team. Again, contact is not allowed.

Similarities
The playing field is between 100 and 120 metres long, 50 to 60 metres wide, with goals + uprights on both short ends of the field. A team consists of eight players.

Season structure
The entire Ko-orenite Football season consists of the following events:
- Single round robin league, Northern game (11 rounds, 12 professional teams)
- Single round robin league, Eastern game (11 rounds, 12 professional teams)

- All Ko-orenite Open Cup, Northern game (6 rounds)
- All Ko-orenite Open Cup, Eastern game (6 rounds)

- 12 Circuit Championships: two-week championships in various locations, all with slight changes to rules (12 championships x 3 rounds)
NumberSeasonLocationRule changeTrivia
1SummerAltiora, AerellenNorth, but bouncing the ball once per possession per player is allowedThis Championship is played around the longest possible day in Ko-oren: close to the solstice in Ko-oren's far north
2SummerAerond-Almina, SudaefjollNorth, but the 1 point area is the width of the goal on either sideThese rules were originally the standard Northern rules
3SummerNyashawill, West Strand RidingNorth, but players are limited to which areas they may be inThe rule limitation on this Championship changes regularly and is often used to experiment with
4SummerLaunott, PoolruggeNorth, but the pitch is turned 90 degrees to be wider than it is longOriginally, fields were square for this Championship
5SpringBurnet, SurbourneshireEast, but goals may only be scored from an 'in-goal area', grounding the ball in that area scores 1 point. 1 point 'wides' are removed from the gameFirst Championship of the season
6SpringPenstead, MawryshireEast, but teams consist of 16 people and the playing field is a valley, 350 m longDespite having the largest field, it has the fewest spectators
7AutumnWillowbourne, GehrennaEast, but it's played on a circular fieldTo mark the circular field, a cricket rope is used. Of the 460m long rope, exactly half is used to mark the Ko-orenite football field
8AutumnAminey, Côte AustralEast, but throwing the ball (backwards) is allowedPlayed in the largest venue of all 12 Championships
9AutumnMaethoru, MayaraNorth, but either team can take possession whenever: upon taking possession, a team has two minutes to scoreThis code is often seen as the true middle between the two codes - but seen by a modern abomination by others
10AutumnLaringen, IntermareNorth, but ball may be placed on the ground after every catch from a kickFor a while, the Intermare rule change was that instead of six innings per team, a game would take 12 innings per team - which proved far too long
11WinterFerrovente, FinisterreEast, but there are multiple targets around the side of the field for 1 point eachLast Championship of the season
12WinterVarious in YoshimaEast, but every 3rd consecutive successful pass also scores 1 pointThe host city of this Championship rotates among six cities in Yoshima

Professional teams will play up to 70 games per season. Roster sizes are large enough so clubs can field different players on different days, allowing for strategising which player plays which games, and to allow every player rest days in between games.

Field Hockey - Ice Hockey - Lacrosse

Field Hockey
This sport is played in the state of Intermare, as an extremely popular sport to pick up on schoolyards, playgrounds, etcetera. Schemerdrecht, as the largest city, has four of its suburbs represented in the KFHL. There are two teams from outside of Intermare: Hazel-Amber was chosen as the team name for the cities in the Hazel and Amber river estuaries (Straudum and Lamau). April also refers to a river, the one that separates Intermare from the state of Mayara - April being based in Gehrenna city, in Mayara state. Sterrenwolde has also got two teams: Sterrenwolde and Venstertoren. The remaining teams are as follows: Vleugelberg, Laringen, Angelwoud, Rozenvoorde.

Ice Hockey
Ice hockey is king in the northeast, though half of the league is based in the city of Aevanna, on the far northeastern islands. The most widely supported teams are those on the mainland, however (because those teams don't have to share markets): Straudum Ice, Noordrug Bi-State, Launott Polar Bears and West Coast Blizzards. Aevanna has the following six teams: the Plains Wanderers, the Explorers, the Bay Mariners, the Scouts, the Southwest Rangers, and the South Storm. The other team is the Egevea Northerners.

Lacrosse
Lacrosse is a mildly popular sport in a sport-saturated region: Gehrenna and Surbourneshire. This means that overall, lacrosse isn't much smaller or larger than the other semi-professional sports, seeing as this region has a huge population compared to Intermare (field hockey) or the northeast (ice hockey). Greencaster, Ko-oren's largest city, has three teams. Willowbourne, one of the next four largest cities, has two. Both the quarreling southeastern mining towns have teams: Cirelbourne and Bruncester. There are two more teams from Surbourneshire: Ansonville and Marinwood. The remaining teams are from the state of Gehrenna: Anarcourt, Norille and Maynard.

Basketball - Kabaddi - Australian Rules

Basketball
This sport is popular along the southern coast of the Bay of Ko-oren: all the way from historical Gehrenna, past the other cities of the 'four-cities kingdom' from ancient history, through Aminey, Amillon and Étouille, all the way to the naval outpost of Ferrovente and Santa Teresa.

Kabaddi
This sport is played as a traditional sport by the 12 cities that were granted statehood back in the days of an independent Yoshima: Alara and Echizen from Alara island, Teragaseki from Etena island, Arakura, Furune and Aonishi from Selesi island, and Lejana, Nitoya, Aviansola, Suvira and Katashi from Leleia island. Katashi was later split in two: east of where the city splits, and west of the city's division.

Association Football - Season 27

Pre-season
12 teams, playing each other three times. The Top League is back! Some teams look like immediate candidates for the championship, others will have to fight to hold on.

Maethoru, Branvon, Aminey, Miradela
The four traditional powerhouses of Ko-oren have been in better shape. Maethoru is definitely not the kind of team they were around the start of the league, and currently have trouble finding players to cover their obvious gaps. Aminey don't look much better, though they have a tendency to turn ties into wins with last-minute goals; they can break a deadlock, but they have serious trouble turning a loss into a draw. Southeastern rivals Branvon and Miradela are in much better shape, but neither should challenge anything for a title this year. Miradela's attack is as strong as Branvon's defence, among the league's best, but they have massive shortcomings on the other side of possession. Mid-table could be in it for them, given the poor state of the league as-is.

Maynard, Bruncester, Cirelbourne
The three English-speaking teams from the nation's south are absolute challengers for the title. The cup is going to end up in the south, but no clue which team. Defence wins championships, and Bruncester has more of that than any other team, and Ko-orenite play favours the defence even more. Bruncester also has some semblance of a complete team. Cirelbourne, meanwhile, take their loss in the defensive side of things and have gone for a possession-based attack this year. Maynard are simply a complete team, balanced and very hard to beat at home given the altitude they are on.

Schemerdrecht, Straudum, Alara, Katashi-Kanatsu, Tanques
These are our remaining teams. Schemerdrecht also have a balanced team but no difference-maker. Straudum struggle, but their colder climate could save them some points at home. Alara have the opposite problem of Schemerdrecht: enough difference makers but no way to lock up a game if the need arises. Katashi-Kanatsu are rebuilding and have a wave of talents coming up, but it's unsure whether they will play, or whether they will make the difference this year. Tanques, lastly, could compete for a title later in the season as some key injuries should disappear.

League season
Top League Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Schemerdrecht SVV 11 7 1 3 17 7 +10 22
2 Bruncester United AFC 11 6 2 3 8 7 +1 20
3 Branvón CD 11 5 2 4 9 6 +3 17
4 Maynard AFC 11 5 2 4 13 10 +3 17
5 Katashi-Kanatsu 11 5 1 5 9 12 −3 16
6 Aminey CS 11 5 0 6 13 11 +2 15
7 Cirelbourne United 11 4 3 4 13 20 −7 15
8 Miradela GD 11 4 2 5 13 14 −1 14

11 Straudum 11 2 6 3 4 5 −1 12
12 Maethoru SC 11 2 3 6 8 16 −8 9

After playing everyone once, the following seems clear: Schemerdrecht haven't been too troubled yet and their slow-but-steady approach grinds them wins - and even gets them big wins. Bruncester follow closely, and the massive middle pack starts at Branvon and ends at Straudum. Maethoru, with some unlucky breaks, can't escape bottom place just yet. Then again, Maethoru shouldn't have had much better hopes, from the looks of it.

Top League Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Schemerdrecht SVV 22 10 6 6 28 24 +4 36

11 Cirelbourne United 22 5 10 7 24 32 −8 25
12 Maethoru SC 22 5 8 9 17 26 −9 23

Having played everyone twice, Schemerdrecht are still top of the league, despite some trading of places in days prior. The top six are all close, as are the bottom six. And even then that's a little arbitrary, dividing them into two tiers. Bruncester have fallen back, Tanques have exploited their returned players for a big break into the top half, but no team has climbed more than Straudum, from 10 points behind the leader to 3 points behind.

Top League Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts

11 Maethoru SC 32 8 11 13 27 37 −10 35
12 Aminey CS 32 9 7 16 31 30 +1 34

One day before the end, we have four teams still capable of winning the title. Bruncester look the best, points-wise, followed by Schemerdrecht, Maynard and Branvon.

Maynard play at home against Bruncester on the last day, for a direct chance of taking the championship against the current leader - a story for the ages. Maynard are ruthlessly strong at home, so they could at least keep Bruncester from their title, and at best, win it at home. That gives Schemerdrecht a big chance, who face league-lowest Aminey at home! If Maynard do what they've been doing all season - making their home stadium into an untakeable keep, Schemerdrecht should walk away with the title easily. Branvon are outsiders, playing away at Miradela. The cross-town rivalry of Miradela and Branvon is a serious fixture to consider, and there is no harder game on Branvon's calendar than the away game at Miradela. Schemerdrecht look like they could just win a title, as long as Maynard do not slip up.

Day 33
On this day, all matches kick off at the same time, so no outcomes are influenced by matches that have ended earlier.

15:00 - the whistle blows, and our four hopefuls kick off for their last game of the season.

15:15 - Miradela have scored in front of home audience and their half of the city of Santa Teresa explodes! Keeping their biggest rival from taking the title themselves would be a massive recovery to their poor season.

15:30 - No further goals have scored in the big matches, though Straudum have slotted one past Alara for a 1-0 lead.

15:48 - End of the first half, on a very tame match day so far. The top three all gain one point while Branvon looks eliminated.

16:00 - There we go! Final 45 minutes.

16:15 - Lots of goals! Tanques profit off of a penalty versus Katashi-Kanatsu, Cirelbourne get lucky from a shot that touched three other players before leaving the goalie with no chance, putting Maethoru behind. Miradela have scored their second over Branvon - knocking them all but out of the race.

16:30 - Maynard finally knock one in as Bruncester look winded from the lack of oxygen. They have done it once again - Maynard is simply unbeatable at home. That means they now lead the league.

16:40 - Five minutes to go, and Aminey have broken the hearts of everything that supports Schemerdrecht. The home team only had to beat Aminey, the last team in the league, at home no less, for the championship but now they have five minutes to avoid defeat and to hope Maynard allows one to Bruncester.

16:45 - No more goals! Maynard win the league off of their ridiculous record at home! Bruncester finish second in what turned out to be a direct championship match, Schemerdrecht are left speechless in a home loss against no. 12's Aminey that could have won them the title themselves. Tanques take fourth, Straudum is fifth and Miradela is sixth. Miradela have put Branvon seventh in their win - that's going to fuel this rivalry for another decade, and this is one rivalry that didn't need any fueling whatsoever. Alara are eighth by a small difference, followed by fellow Easterners Katashi-Kanatsu. Further behind are Cirelbourne, gutted they couldn't finish any closer to their neighbours Bruncester. Aminey slip ahead of Maethoru in their improbable win at Schemerdrecht, leaving once respected Maethoru in last place - the perfect place to plan revenge.

Post-Season
We know that Bruncester has taken the Top League, but what about the other leagues of Ko-oren? There are several divisions that could be called the second division, all leading their own pyramids down to beer teams from village such-and-so. The second division is popular with young players that want to compete straight out of high school, or with minimal tertiary education (as far as that is allowed by Ko-orenite law). It is also for players who are just short of the Top League but still are quality enough for a semi-pro contract. Meanwhile, there is a league for universities and vocational schools for those players that are serious about their education, but still want to be in the picture for a possible jump to a (semi-)professional team.

Yoshima 2nd Division Y2D
Motojagava, the largest club of the island of Selesi, took the title home this year. In absence of a professional team on the island, Motojagava is extremely popular and are usual suspects for whatever team might take the Yoshima 2nd Division. Teragaseki take second place, and a surprise third place finish for remote Otavura, in Ko-oren's far southeast.

Northern Ko-orenite 2nd Division NK2D
The NK2D is for teams from Aerellen, Poolrugge, Sudaefjoll, Intermare, Mayara and West Strand Riding.
First place went to Sterrenwolde, second to Dartha, and in third place came Arboren.

Southern Ko-orenite 2nd Division SK2D
The SK2D is for teams from Mawryshire, Gehrenna, Surbourneshire, Côte Austral and Finisterre. Winners in the south were Ambergate, followed by Couziers, and then Anarcourt.

University Athletic Union - Association Football League: Uni-North and Uni-South
Among its two competing top leagues, north was won by the University of Schemerdrecht, and the south was won by the Technical University of Surbourneshire.

Cup Round-up
The Dragonfly Cup is contested by every professional and semi-professional team in Ko-oren. These include teams from:
- Top League (professional)
- Y2D (semi)
- NK2D (semi)
- SK2D (semi)
- Uni-North (semi)
- Uni-South (semi)
- NK3D (semi)
- SK3D (semi)

Every league consists of twelve teams, for a total of 96 teams.
Round 1: SK3D, NK3D, Uni-North, Uni-South + worst 5 teams from NK2D, SK2D, Y2D + worst Top League team (64 teams -> 32 teams) - QUALIFICATION ROUND
Round 2: All winners + remaining NK2D, SK2D, Y2D and Top League teams (64 teams -> 32 teams) - 32ND FINAL
Round 3: All winners (32 teams -> 16 teams) - 16TH FINAL
Round 4: All winners (16 teams -> 8 teams) - 8TH FINAL
Round 5: All winners (8 teams -> 4 teams) - QUARTERFINAL
Round 6: All winners (4 teams -> 2 teams) - SEMIFINAL
Round 7: All winners (2 teams -> 1 team) - FINAL

Baseball - Season 18

Pre-season:

Big market teams have the largest chance as of yet to attract the talent they need in order to develop their team. A lot of this has to do with the size of the team's farm system leading up to the starters in the Ko-orenite Baseball League. A city such as Katashi, in which baseball is unparallelled, could finance a much larger system than provincial Aonishi. Similarly, the three teams that are not from Yoshima, have a much larger potential playerbase than the Yoshima teams. This means that the Santa Teresa Stars and Ferrovente Whales have more potential (but more rival sports), and the same goes for the Western Wanderers.

This season, the star power of the Katashi Generals seems a big candidate for the championship. The Santa Teresa Stars also have a massive chance. Echizen and Teragaseki have some potential. As always, the Western Wanderers are a complete wildcard, and I'm giving the Nitoya Silvers my pre-season award for potential surprise! The Giants have lost some firepower to their cross-town rivals, and they might be early candidates for last place.

Halfway
Pld W L
1 Katashi Generals 66 39 27
2 Teragaseki Dynamo 66 36 30
3 Echizen Dragons 66 35 31
4 Santa Teresa Stars 66 35 31
5 Arakura Knights 66 34 32
6 Suvira Quarry 66 34 32
7 Nitoya Silvers 66 33 33
8 Western Wanderers 66 33 33
9 Ferrovente Whales 66 33 33
10 Aviansola Admirals 66 31 35
11 Aonishi Challengers 66 27 39
12 Katashi Giants 66 26 40

Generals in first, Giants in last. Katashi is divided among fans that can already smell that next title, and fans that are already thinking of next season and the changes needed to turn this team around. Dynamo, Dragons and Stars are in that next tier, though it's very close all the way until 10th place. Only the Challengers and Giants have a lot of work to do, but they're definitely not out yet.

Full season
Pld W L
1 Suvira Quarry 132 72 60
2 Echizen Dragons 132 72 60
3 Santa Teresa Stars 132 71 61
4 Katashi Generals 132 70 62
5 Nitoya Silvers 132 68 64
6 Aviansola Admirals 132 65 67
7 Arakura Knights 132 65 67
8 Teragaseki Dynamo 132 65 67
9 Western Wanderers 132 64 68
10 Ferrovente Whales 132 63 69
11 Katashi Giants 132 62 70
12 Aonishi Challengers 132 55 77

And we have our next champion! Out of nowhere, it's Suvira Quarry! They came alongside the Echizen Dragons on the last day, and won via their superior H2H record. One win behind are the Stars, who have put together a good performance throughout the season. The Generals have sunk a little, but their rivals, the Giants, also have avoided last place. The Challengers had a 22 straight defeats in the second half of the season to finish 7 wins behind 11th place. I did expect more from Dynamo.

Second & Farm Division Champions:
- Leleia Baseball League: Omabe
- Sanshima Baseball League: Alara
- Finisterre Baseball League: Ferrovente

Standings after week 16 (one more game against each divisional opponent):
WEST Pld W D L
1 Mayara Destroyers 11 12 1 3
2 Mawryshire Centaurs 11 9 0 7

4 Schemerdrecht Admirals 11 7 3 6
5 Schemerdrecht 65ers 11 5 0 11
6 Noordrug Astronauts 11 3 0 13

The Wolves, after a very strong 7-4 opening to the season, win just one in the final divisional rounds. This takes them to 8-7-1, and allows the Centaurs to take second place - without that strong of a season. They go just 3-2 in the final five weeks, but it is enough and they'll travel to Mayara for the third time this season to face the Destroyers for the third time this season as well. The Emperors finish off with four wins in five games, the division holds no secrets for them. The Saints have a lot of thinking to do, seeing out the season with 11 losses in a row.

Not much changes in the East. The Caspians remain first with four wins in the last five games, their only loss to the Explosions. The Explosions win the final 3rd of the season, but it isn't enough to take second place in an extremely strong Eastern division. The Dragonflies just don't give up the semifinal spot after a 8-2-1 start to the season, and a 3-2 finish. The Astronauts and 65ers are given a lot of homework for next season. The 65ers don't look that bad, but closed out the year with 6 consecutive losses, and the Astronauts were among the league's worst all year long.

The Caspians make the playoffs again, while the Dragonflies are just happy to be here for now. They're not used to getting to this point. The Destroyers enjoy a strong season - they expected a winning season, maybe even the playoffs, but not the division win. The Centaurs have been on the up for a while and see their improvements finally rewarded.

Mayara Destroyers (West) 3 14 7 3 27
Mawryshire Centaurs (West) 6 3 0 7 16

Aminey Caspians (East) 10 3 3 7 0 23
Sterrenwolde Dragonflies (East) 10 7 0 6 7 30

In the West, the Destroyers make no mistake and outscore the Centaurs all day long. They headed into the second half at a 17-9 lead, quickly extended that to 24-9 after the third quarter, and ran down the clock after that. The Eastern semi had it all: scores, ties, extra time, you name it. Both teams started incredibly well on offence, trading field goals and later touchdowns for a 10-10 score. In the second quarter, scoring finally calmed down to the pace of the Dragonflies' defence. The Caspians finally got ahead in the fourth quarter 23-17, and a touchdown would be enough for the Dragonflies to tie it, an extra point would be enough for a win. With 4:30 on the clock, the Sterrenwolde team took the ball and drove down the field, finally getting their touchdown at 1:50 left - but missed the extra point for a 23-all score. The Caspians did their best to get into field goal range with under two minutes left - enough time, normally - but failed to get there at all. In overtime, the Dragonflies scored on their first possession to qualify for the Ko-oren Bowl.

Mayara Destroyers (West) 0 6 7 0 13
Sterrenwolde Dragonflies (East) 3 7 7 0 17

The Dragonflies win it all! They shut down the Destroyers' potent offence, even keep the fourth quarter scoreless for both teams, and they may celebrate the championship! It was a while coming, and the Dragonflies arguably still aren't the unanimously strongest team, but they showed they can seal the deal when it matters - and they're the 41st season's champions.

Semi-professional and amateur sports - Season 1

Ice Hockey
After a barely successful WCoH attempt, some of Ko-oren's biggest talents were signed by foreign clubs to ultimately help develop the national team. It leaves the league in a split between following these foreign leagues to professionalism but dooming several less popular clubs, or keeping with the current format but seeing the most popular and talented players leave.

Straudum picks up the championship on the merit of not losing many games at all. Second in losses are the Islanders, but they settled for too many draws instead of wins. The Wanderers and the Northerners complete the top three, so at least some Aerellen pride is reflected in the final ranking. The Explorers join the top three to go for the HCL 12.

Field Hockey

Angelwoud and Wintertoorn enter the season as favourites. Angelwoud has no weak spots in their starting 11, while Wintertoorn rely on an extremely deep squad and good coaching. It turns out that their season took a turn for the worse as the high expectations were nowhere close to their actual performance. Oostgemeenten took the championship on the back of a new good group of coaches and an excellent season by their star players; a fantastic midfield. Sterrenwolde finish second because of a team that revealed no big weak spots - Sterrenwolde have the team that Angelwoud thought they had. Herengein is a big upset to come this far, with decent coaching and a good starting 11 but no player that could force a match wide open by sheer genius and having an unproven youth team on their bench.

Soccer - Season 28 - Preview and Predictions
Image

ImageAlara:
They hired a new coach last year, and this season he had his first opportunity to buy and sell a little. That, together with the resilient brand of football he has Alara play, makes this coach-club combination a lethal one for next year. Alara look very dangerous. The coach has added some good players from the youth academy and university teams, the fans are looking forward to the start of the season, and the one point of criticism is that the aging midfield hasn't been addressed.
Overview:
Strength: Front office, coaching, depth
Weakness: Aging squad, midfield
Star players: Russell Swadling, Sanetomo Maeda
Prediction: 1st

ImageMiradela:
They probably have the best staff in football, now also adding some data people, like the national team. They have lost a star player to Katashi, but otherwise their team actually looks stronger now.
Overview:
Strength: No weak points, depth, data-revolution started
Weakness: Still no answer to Branvón's cunning/fighting play
Star player: Erasmo Valente
Prediction: 2nd

ImageBranvón:
Branvón have done pretty well in every regard. However, the team has ditched their long-time local hero of a coach, and instead went with a more possession-based, counterattacking team. Branvón's fans stand by the working-class football they've always played, and the move hasn't gone over too well. Despite the fans' attitude, this might be the year they can beat their rivals of Miradela. They have lost some firepower, but additions all over the rest of the team should provide a balance for that.
Overview:
Strength: Best additions in the league over the break
Weakness: Mismatch between players and tactics, new manager
Star players: Ian Neves, Carlinhos Queiros
Prediction: 3rd

ImageStraudum:
As always, the skyblue Straudum have been able to prepare for this season in all the peace and quiet they need. This is the 10th year of their coach's tenure, and it might be the year for them. However, they've lost some serviceable players without adding much in return. They're banking on youth players, it seems.
Overview:
Strength: No crises, calm preparations for this season
Weakness: Team has less quality compared to last year
Star players: Peter Hellegeland
Prediction: 4th

ImageKatashi:
A few retiring players have put this team in a minor crisis. Katashi still has players that should be able to carry this team, but the team will have a different feeling to it compared to, well, the last decade.
Overview:
Strength: Youth prospects and depth players
Weakness: Team is down a few years of experience
Star players: Hisashi Yamaoka, Reizo Yokota, Heliodoro Araujo
Prediction: 5th

ImageSchemerdrecht:
The players that Maethoru added, mostly came from Schemerdrecht. They wouldn't mind, they're a few divas down now, and they have focused heavily on the supporting cast. So much so that it looks a very nice place for new players to land.
Overview:
Strength: Steady coaching, no more weak points
Weakness: No defining players
Star players: Ruben de Meester
Prediction: 6th

ImageMaethoru:
The theme for this year, is revenge. Last year was terrible, and the Green must get back to the Champions' Cup status it always had. Fans are demanding results, though it couldn't get much worse than last year. The budget allowed for some big signings (Lynn Holstege), which they did, but chemistry in the team went down a little because of it.
Overview:
Strength: Big signings that should deliver from day 1
Weakness: High pressure
Star players: Lynn Holstege, Kherles Ensaunden
Prediction: 7th

ImageBruncester:
Bruncester looks a fair bit worse than last year. Some of their players might break into the star player category this year, which is what they should be hoping for if they want this year to turn into something good. Otherwise, they're a few starters down which might hinder them at the start.
Overview:
Strength: Fans aren't rioting for a change
Weakness: Many players left
Star players: Dennis Lampshire
Prediction: 8th

ImageCirelbourne:
And of course, where you spot Bruncester, Cirelbourne is never far ahead or behind. Cirelbourne have had some big issues this off-season: coach left, fans aren't happy with how the front office handled the new hire, and Cirelbourne will head into next season with an interim coach. Even though the player material improved a lot over last year, this is a net loss for the team.
Overview:
Strength: Good team
Weakness: No coach or depth
Star players: Lionel Dalton, Ethan Benjamin
Prediction: 9th

ImageMaynard:
Last year's champions are in a tough spot. I didn't want to put them this low, but it seems all I can do. The green have stagnated in many areas except that almost their entire bench got signed elsewhere, and the fans aren't happy with how the administration didn't address any needs.
Overview:
Strength: Most of the championship team still together
Weakness: No depth, no additions, no improvement
Star players: Wouter Wouters
Prediction: 10th

ImageTanques:
What seems to be a theme this year: every pair of rivals is close together: Branvón-Miradela, Bruncester-Cirelbourne, and Tanques-Aminey (see next blurb). Tanques hasn't regressed much in all different areas: players that can single-handedly decide a game, the starting XI, backups, youth, coaching and fans, but they haven't made an improvement in any area either from last year. Last year's 4th place will be hard to defend with this kind of team and attitude.
Overview:
Strength: They didn't regress a lot
Weakness: They got worse in every regard
Star players: Maximilien Longchambon
Prediction: 11th

ImageAminey:
Aminey is the team everyone loves to hate: big city, big money - but no big football team anymore. The 'Hollywood'-team blew up this off-season, in a string of firings, angry fans, accusations of mismanagement, players leaving, and that while the team was 11th last year. Seems like an impossible task for this team to improve on last year.
Overview:
Strength: -
Weakness: They got worse at everything, new coach, new players, no chemistry
Star players: Chloé Beaulieu
Prediction: 12th

Soccer - Season 28 - Mid-season
Image

Season Structure

The entire professional and semi-professional soccer system of Ko-oren consists of 8 leagues: one 1st division (Top League), three 2nd divisions, two 3rd divisions, and two divisions for university teams. All leagues contain twelve teams.

For all divisions except for the Top League, all teams play each other three times, for 33 match round. At the end, there is only promotion/relegation between the second and third divisions. Six teams promote from the third division, three teams from each league. They promote to the appropriate division (Southern 3rd division -> Southern 2nd division, Northern 3rd division -> EITHER Northern 2nd division or Yoshima 2nd division).

The teams in the Top League play each other two times, then after 22 match rounds split into two groups: the Championship Group and the Challenge group. Within these groups, teams play each other twice for another 10 rounds, for a total of 32 matches.

Meanwhile, the Ko-orenite Cup is contested as well, which is structured as follows:
Round 1: SK3D, NK3D, Uni-North, Uni-South + worst 5 teams from NK2D, SK2D, Y2D + worst Top League team (64 teams -> 32 teams) - QUALIFICATION ROUND
Round 2: All winners + remaining NK2D, SK2D, Y2D and Top League teams (64 teams -> 32 teams) - 32ND FINAL
Round 3: All winners (32 teams -> 16 teams) - 16TH FINAL
Round 4: All winners (16 teams -> 8 teams) - 8TH FINAL
Round 5: All winners (8 teams -> 4 teams) - QUARTERFINAL
Round 6: All winners (4 teams -> 2 teams) - SEMIFINAL
Round 7: All winners (2 teams -> 1 team) - FINAL

The first three rounds are scheduled in the first half of the season, the latter four rounds in the last half of the season.

Predictions revisited
Alara, Miradela, Branvón and Straudum were all said to qualify for the international competitions this year... well, at least Alara still has a chance to. Again, gaps in the Top League aren't huge but after 22 rounds and the tables split, those in the bottom six have no hope left for the CC or GC. At the moment, it looks like Tanques defied all expectations and is currently first, Schemerdrecht is second but should trump all other teams on goal difference, and Bruncester and Maethoru are our provisional remaining Globe Cup contestants. However, all the way down to tenth place we see teams that could get into the Championship Group and in the race for the Globe Cup. Maethoru, that took a lot of players from Schemerdrecht, are in fourth - but the additions that Schemerdrecht introduced are nothing bad either: they are second. Aminey, the diva team that imploded near the end of last year, are 11th, around where we said they'd be. The Surbourneshire derby teams, Bruncester and Cirelbourne, are split all the way between third and ninth, where we said they should be pretty close together.

Where next for Aminey?
The proud sky-blue team from Ko-oren's entertainment capital are in shambles. There is always more pressure on Aminey than on any other team, and for the second year running, they're incapable of handling it, Currently they only have Branvón beneath them, and that is because they play a possession-based counterattack with a cast of hardworking players used to playing a physical long-ball game. Aminey even have one of the best strikers in Ko-oren - so why aren't things working?

Players left, coach left, and no suitable replacements were brought in. Then a few board members left, which took away their responsibility but still left a poorly managed team with barely any good players. Maybe it's time for a rebuild? Bring in a manager with the promise to keep him for at least three years, and let him put together a team based on his tactical preferences, start a few youth players, and look to the future. Embrace a few bad years to come, but start flourising by the end of next season and get a Championship Group place within three to four years. Keep Beaulieu up front, but give her a creative midfielder to create chances. Aminey has some players that might turn very good within a few years. At least, that's the theory.

But this is Aminey. After a poor year, sack the manager, bring in a new one, burn down the team and then wonder why next year isn't much better.

Gehrenna rampant in NK2D
Now for some news from the lower divisions. Gehrenna FC is currently on a huge streak, winning games with goals to spare, and keep their losses to just one from 17 so far. That is insane in a division where teams are naturally closer together in quality. Unfortunately, what often happens to these teams, the manager will be gobbled up by a Top League team - let's hope that if it happens, it turns into a good one. Keep an eye on the 21-year old Tharasthen Pargalothen, who played all 17 games so far with 12 assists, and 23-year old Karolun Garaltothen in attack, scoring 10 goals so far, 6 of which after a Pargalothen assist. Great duo, but will they stay together after this year?

Data revolution stalled
As Miradela announced before the season: the data-revolution has started and is here to stay. Miradela has a good squad, but aided by science they would storm the heavens. Instead, the team imploded and will have to win four of the next five to have a decent possibility to make the Championship Group. Numerically, their game is sound, and the goals are coming - but no team has conceded more and they're third-last. I do think we'll see a turnaround, and the data-revolution will go on, but the Miradela experiment is not doing it any favours.

Straightforward promotion and relegation this year. 49 points or over secures promotion, under 40 points means relegation. Gehrenna slowed down from their pace in the first half of the season, totalling to 6 losses. All in all, Gehrenna had a massive season that will be hard to replicate for any team next year. In the University divisions, Willowbourne Technological Academy has posted the best results, though it is especially hard to stay good for years in the University divisions.

Practical messages: some of the longest team names will be officially abbreviated next season. The University of Agriculture and Ecology of Grainshire and Leeshire will be written as "Uni of A&E of Grain- and Leeshire", which by itself should already be enough to cut down paper costs for sports magazines by a few percent.

The top 6 qualify for the Championship Group: Bruncester, Schemerdrecht, Maethoru, Tanques, Straudum and Katashi-Kanatsu. That means that only Straudum challenged their position from halfway to take fifth place. Advance Alara, despite their massive attacking prowess (see the honorably mentioned scores below), finish 9th in what can only be described as a massive letdown - or proof that defence beats offence.

We've seen 6 games per round, for a total of 126 matches played. In these, we've seen 234 goals. That is an average of 1.857 goals per game, which is fairly low on a global scale but this is the defensive Ko-orenite league after all. Like in our World Cup Qualification group, away teams were better than home teams on the whole: 36.5% of games ended in a victorious away team, while only 34.9% of times, the home team successfully kept the three points at home. The remaining 28.6% of games ended in a draw. Away teams also outscored home teams 125-109. The average score in the Ko-orenite Top League was 0.865 goals for the home team, versus 0.992 goals for the away team. On average, the away team scored a goal per game.

Still, a 1-0 score was still the most occurring score. Over 4 full match rounds ended in a 1-0 score, closely followed by 0-1 and 0-0, further affirming that a single goal is worth its proverbial weight in gold in the Ko-orenite Top League. 1-1 is next, followed by 0-2 and 1-2, before we finally see 2-1, 2-2 and 2-0: there's your away team bias.

The biggest scores of the 22-match stage:
Largest margin: Miradela GD (1) 0–7 Schemerdrecht SVV (1)
Most goals: Maynard AFC (1) 4–7 Cirelbourne United (1)

Honorable mentions:
Maethoru SC (1) 3–5 Advance Alara (1)
Advance Alara (1) 6–1 Katashi-Kanatsu (1)

Maethoru SC have claimed the title and look back to their old selves as Champions of Ko-oren! In addition, Schemerdrecht, Bruncester and Tanques have qualified for the Globe Cup. Schemerdrecht were everyone's second favourite team this season but came up just short. Both Schemerdrecht-Maethoru fixtures in the second stage of the league ended in a 1-0 win to Maethoru, which well may have won them the championship. Bruncester and Straudum finish the season with amazing defensive numbers as we're used to, Straudum not even conceding a goal per two games on average. In the Challenge Group, Miradela climb up for the win in that group, just ahead of Alara who have recorded some crazy scores this season. All in all, Miradela even outscored them with 52 total goals - but also the league's second most porous defence.

After the second stage, the away team bias took on even stranger forms. Only about a third of all games resulted in three points to the home team, and in almost 40% of cases, the away team stole the victory away. Draws occurred in a little over a quarter of all matches. We have seen 377 goals, which means that the second stage was more goal-ridden than the first. Now, the away team scored over a goal on average, while the home teams came up just short of a full goal. In all, away teams outscored the home teams 203-174.

0-1 was still the most popular result, which happened 43 times (7 full rounds + 1 match). 1-0 and 0-0 are close behind. Then we see 1-1, 1-2 and 0-2 and the away bias remains. Now we've added some weird scores: 4-4, 5-4, 4-3, 0-5, 1-5 and 5-1. It might not surprise you that some of the away victories have been blowouts, too: we even saw another instance of 1-7. Yup, 1-7 was statistically more likely than a 2-3 score, and equally likely as a 3-2.

The extreme scores haven't changed after the last 10 rounds.

Advance Alara get redemption for their Challenge Group final standing in the league, by conceding just two goals during their entire campaign - now there's a difference with their league campaign. They also kept clean sheets from Round 4 all through to the final - if they kan keep this team together, they could transfer their pre-season hype and cup win to great heights next season!
