Hudsonian Football International Challenge - EVERYTHING

Postby Hudson Islands » Thu Jan 11, 2018 9:02 am

Hello, I'm going out on a limb here, but fortune favors the brave, as they say.

So, what is this?

Hudsonian Football (which I previously RP'ed the league for, but then backed out of in order to eventually retcon it) is the national sport of Hudson Islands. Like many other codes of football in English speaking countries, its origins go back roughly to rugby. The league, the Hudsonian Football Championship, is the biggest event in sport in Hudson Islands, and in some parts of the country is borderline religion. The game is colloquially referred to as "footy" (creative!) through much of the country, but it holds little to no appeal elsewhere. It has limited broadcast rights to other parts of Placid Ocean, but for the most part this is strictly for Hudsonian ex-pats. However, as Hudson Islands tries to get more involved in the multiverse-wide sporting community, the Hudsonian Football Federation, seeing the high-risk/high-reward potential to make big money, has proposed hosting an international series for the sport.

OK, so...how do you play Hudsonian Football?

Here's some bullet points.
  • The game is played on a rectangular field 140 meters long and 65 meters wide, roughly the same width of a rugby league field but much longer. There are goals on each end that are identical to those used in rugby league. The game is played between two teams of 11 players, and is played in 4 twenty-minute quarters, using an oblate spheroid ball.
  • The objective of the game can be nutshelled as "rugby league but the objective is to score goals rather than tries". The game begins with a coin toss, where the winner elects to kick or receive or choose an end to attack first. After that there is a kickoff and the receiving team begins to attempt to advance the ball forward. The ball can be advanced by running with the ball, or by kicking the ball forwards- the latter is a unique part of the game, and more on it shortly. The ball may also be passed backwards, as in codes of rugby.
  • Scoring occurs by kicking the ball through the uprights and above the goal post. There are a few methods of kicking a goal- during open play it must be via a drop kick. As a result of a penalty or "downing" the ball (more on that later) it is kicked off of a tee in a place kick. All goals are worth one point. A player may punt the ball as a means of gaining field position, however if a punted ball goes through the goalposts, a goal is not awarded and the ball is declared dead. After a goal, the scoring team kicks off as in the beginning of the game. If the ball crosses the goal line but does not score a goal, the defending team receives the ball with 0 tackles at the spot of the kick.
  • The defensive team attempts to stop the attacking team through tackling, as in rugby league. After a successful tackle play is halted and the attacking team is required to play the ball to restart the play. All players must get into an on-side position for the beginning of play- for attacking players this means being parallel to or behind the line wherein the ball is played. Occasionally a player may begin the process deep behind the line and start running forward in order to pass the line around the time the ball is played in order to gain ground for a forward kick. On defense, being on-side means being 10 meters in front of the line where the ball is being played, with the exception of one "marker", who may stand immediately in front of the ball being played.
  • The attacking team has five tackles to advance the ball, so traditionally after the fourth tackle is made, an attacking team will kick the ball forward, either attempting to score a goal, attempting to kick the ball as far away as possible in order to give the receiving team poor field position, or as a last-ditch effort to move the ball forward. If a fifth tackle is made, the ball is turned over in the exact location of the tackle.
  • One of the unique mechanisms of the game is the "downed ball" mechanism, wherein at any time an attacking team can declare a "downed ball" by touching the ball to the ground with both hands and declaring it dead. At this point play stops and all the players but one are cleared to the side, and the one remaining player gets to take a free kick on goal. Should the kick fail, the opposition team will begin play with 0 tackles having occurred at the spot of the kick.
  • Another unique mechanism is that while the forward pass is illegal, the "knock-on" is not illegal in Hudsonian Football. If a player drops the ball forward it is considered a live ball and either the player who dropped the ball or any defending player may recover it. Should another player on the attacking team recover it, that is considered a forward pass, and thus is against the rules.
  • As you may imagine, the area of play immediately in front of the goal seems difficult to score from, which is true- in the case that a player has broken away from the pack and is running freely towards the goal, they tend to either kick for goal or (more commonly) down the ball between 10-20 meters from the goal line.
  • Substitutions can occur at any stoppage of play, as in basketball, and there is no limit to the amount of substitutions in a match. Alongside the 11 players on the field, there are 6 substitutes on the bench.
  • Penalties are awarded for such fouls as being offsides, tackling above the shoulders, late tackles, most of the same situations as in codes of rugby. A team who was injured by the penalty receives either a free kick towards goal or may tap the ball forwards with all players on the defending team 10m away (no marker).
  • As there are not really scrums in Hudsonian football, the positions are a little less defined. There are generally 6 "Forwards" who are bigger and do more blocking/tackling and 5 "Backs" who do more running/kicking. As this is an isolated sport in an isolated country, degrees of specialization haven't quite been reached, and multiple players are expected to be able to kick goals to some degree. However, with the sport being professional, there has been a bit of a movement towards teams alternating a few players who mostly play when attacking and a few players who mostly play when defending during any stoppage of play.
Wow! That's a lot, so...how will this be scorinated?

I've been working for a while on a spreadsheet "scorinator" for this game for a while, but it involves more specific player skills. Thus, after quite a lot of research into the "Scorinators" thread, and playing around with all the sports I know less about in xKoranate, I determined "Rugball" got roughly the scores I wanted. However, the "Style Modifier" will be required to be between 0 and 5, rather than the full range of -5 to +5.

Ok, I'll bite. We'll play, how do I sign up?

Just post in this thread! In order to keep this small, I'd like to limit this to about 8-10 countries, but given my stature in the community I'm not positive we'll even get that. We'll get to roster creation shortly, so hold tight.

(If you have any rules questions, feel free to post them!)

To get this going, Patricana, a puppet of Hudson Islands, will enter. However, if there are enough entries we will withdraw.

This seems like a pretty well-thought-out sport. I'm down to play. Can't think of any questions from what I've seen.

Yup! I'll be posting a roster guide a little later (hopefully tonight). If you're in, that makes eight. I'll keep it open for a day or so and if anyone else joins I'll remove my entry, otherwise we're good to go.

WELCOME TO THE FIRST EVER HUDSONIAN FOOTBALL INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE!

Welcome to Botley, the capital and largest city in Hudson Islands, where all matches will take place. Botley is a medium sized city famous for the Cole building, being the financial and political capital of the nation, and being mad for footy. Your national Hudsonian Football teams will be staying near Placid Airways Park in the Outer-Plateau neighborhood. The players should be encouraged to visit our city!

The basic rules of Hudsonian football were explained above, and some modern tactics are outlined here. Your players should be capable of doing a lot of running, and at least one or two should be able to kick.

Here is a sample of what a roster should look like, with some traits of each position-

STARTING LINEUP:
Forward: Sample Player- Forwards do not necessarily have defined positions- they are bigger players who do more blocking on offense and tackling on defense, but the modern game has led to increased substitution so many forwards will play only one side of the ball, so long as there is a stoppage.
Forward: Sample Player
Forward: Sample Player
Forward: Sample Player
Forward: Sample Player
Center: Sample Player- Traditionally a good runner and offloader of the ball, is usually the largest of the backs and most defensively capable.
Left Wing: Sample Player- The wings have the same objective, they usually are dedicated to running with the ball and receiving forward kicks. They should be able to place kick, though kicking the ball for possession is less critical.
Right Wing: Sample Player
Quarter-Back: Sample Player- Often one of the best runners on the team.
Half-Back: Sample Player- Traditionally small and fast and fairly capable of kicking the ball forward and kicking for goal.
Full-Back: Sample Player- Traditionally the smallest and fastest player, and while not mandatory, ideally also good at kicking the ball forward/kicking for goal.

SUBSTITUTES/RESERVES:
Teams may have 6 substitutes on the bench who may enter freely at any stoppage of play. Rosters for this event are capped at 23.

GROUP DRAW:

GROUP A:
Northwest Kalactin
Drawkland
South Covello
Bjørnøya Republic

GROUP B:
Ethane
Banija
Patricana
Quantilia

SCHEDULE:
Teams will be placed into two groups of 4, each team will play each other once. Teams will receive 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 for a loss. All 8 teams will reach the quarter-finals, and in order to ensure no teams play each other twice until the Semi-Finals, the playoff bracket will be A1 vs. B4, A2 vs. B3, A3 vs B2 and A4 vs B1. Tie breakers will be head-to-head results, followed by Goal Differential.

Game 1- Thursday Jan 18
Northwest Kalactin v Bjørnøya Republic
Drawkland v South Covello
Ethane v Quantilia
Banija v Patricana

Game 2- Saturday Jan 20
Bjørnøya Republic v South Covello
Northwest Kalactin v Drawkland
Quantilia v Patricana
Ethane v Banija

Game 3- Monday Jan 22
Drawkland v Bjørnøya Republic
South Covello v Northwest Kalactin
Banija v Quantilia
Patricana v Ethane

Quarter-Finals- Wednesday Jan 24
Semi-Finals- Friday Jan 26
Final- Sunday Jan 28

Alright, time to kick off! Congrats and welcome!

Hudsonian Football has little footprint in Patricana, despite being neighbours. Many of these players are low level rugby league players without much experience in the sport, although some, like the McLennan brothers and Rory Kelly have played university and club level Hudsonian Football in Hudson Islands. They will play a game that is fast and willing to make a lot of offloads.

Will The International Challenge Move The Needle?

BOTLEY- We are not long from the kickoff of the Hudsonian Football International Challenge, and the critics' voices are beginning to get louder and louder. Ticket sales have been fairly slow, despite low price points for most seats. There has been an extensive publicity campaign behind the tournament- ads on TV, the radio, buses, billboards, but there are concerns that when the first match kicks off in under 48 hours (Northwest Kalactin v Bjørnøya Republic) there will be far fewer fans in the stands than the 22,000 that the Placid Airways Park can hold for big events.

"We are monitoring the ticket sales for the tournament- they're not as brisk as we're hoping, but pre-season footy has always relied heavily on walk-up sales, and that should be no different. We don't really have diasporas for any of the countries competing other than Patricana, so we're hopeful for their game" said HFC commissioner Alexander Ford III, who added "I do think locals who love footy will want to see the future of the game play out before them, so I think the fans will show up."

Many however are not optimistic, pointing to the unusual midday weekday kickoff times and the fact the games are all going to be broadcast on television. There's also the belief that footy fans are maybe not as progressive as some in the league are. "Foreigners messing about with OUR GAME?" wrote TruHudsonian72 on social media network 280. "I won't be 'avin' it, no sir!" TruHudsonian72 added. Less controversially, there were concerns from Channel 5 footy analyst David Palmerston, who told the Botley Sun that "If people won't pay to see Hudsonians play low level footy at the University and Club leagues, they definitely won't pay to see foreigners play low level footy."

We're less than two days away from knowing who is right, but the bigwigs in charge of the HFC would be dealt a crushing blow to turn out to be worse prognosticators of their sport's future than TruHudsonian72.

Banijan Hudsonian Football Team Forms; Heads to Botley

Image
Banijan Hudsonian Football Team in a Warmup Match

BOTLEY, HUDSON ISLANDS- The Olympic Committee of Banija, even though it is not an Olympic sport, is the automatic governing body of all sports that do not have their own national governing bodies within the Kingdom of Banija. And now, a sport that hasn't exactly been introduced to Banija, but Banijans are partaking in, is Hudsonian football. Yet another code of football, alongside the gridiron and association codes that are popular throughout Banija, and the rugby union code that is popular on the Busoga Islands. This code is Hudsonian Football.

The Regional Transit Corporation, a Banijan company that is headquartered out of Rosaria, Eshan, sponsors Wellington FC in the Hudsonian Football Championship, which is the main professional league for this specific code of football. They, of course, just got a valuable new contract to operate in Wellington, which is their first venture into the Hudson Islands and into that entire region. They hope to, of course, gain a foothold in Placid and in the Hudson Islands specifically, hoping that they can expand to more cities after operating well out of Wellington, and becoming a powerhouse within the Hudson Islands.

But we are not here to talk about corporate policy. We are here to talk about this tournament. We have the Hudsonian Football International, where 16 different nations are sending squads to compete. Nobody, of course, has their own Hudsonian Football Leagues. As of yet, anyways. Who knows? A sport like 7ball started in Drawkland but is now popular in a number of countries. Could that happen with Hudsonian Football? As Banija has no league, what is largely considered the national rugby Union 'B side' is the squad that is being sent to Botley for this tournament.

The sport is closest to rugby, as is popular on the Busoga Islands, which is why that team has been sent. There is inspiration from gaelic football as well. And, once again, they are wearing the colors of the islands, rather than the nation as a whole, similar as to what they are doing for the Cricket World Cup. The game is kind of like rugby- except that you want to score goals, rather than tries. Here's the question- can the Banijans win this thing? It is, indeed, quite possible.

None of the other countries have played this sport before either, so it's kinda like the Baptism of Fire. There is no advance scouting, but considering nobody has played this sport before, advance strategy is hard. It will be a pure tournament though- who can adapt faster, make better observations about their opponents on the fly, and, frankly, a simple matter of who has the most skill. We'll find out over the next couple of weeks here in Botley if Banija, and Banijans in general, have a future in this sport.
