This is the Everything Thread where you may post rosters (don't forget to include your style modifier, -5 for defensive teams, +5 for attacking teams, and anything in between) and roleplays for the tournament. Solely OOC posts should be placed in the Discussion Thread (link 1 above). You may wish to contribute some match officials to be used for the tournament in the Match Officials thread (link 3 above). Feel free to telegram me if you have any other questions/comments/concerns/dad jokes you wish to share.

Recent History
Darmen has recently refounded itself after almost two decades of separation into twelve individual states. The Republic of Darmen was officially established on January 1st, 2037, when the country's constitution took effect. President of the Republic Tor Tong Lee - yes, the former international football star - has led the country since then, and is relatively popular. He is up for re-election next year.

Darmen's economy is slowly regenerating itself, but some major issues still exist. Local governments are extremely short of funding, and, depending on the happiness of the workers in the fishing industry, food prices can fluctuate widely. Darmen's economy is now mostly an agrarian one, either fishing along the coast or cattle/wheat farming in the southern plains.

Rugby Union in Darmen
Rugby Union is governed by the Darmeni Rugby Union (DRU). The DRU has 14 sub-unions, each of which provides one of the franchises that make up the National Rugby Championship, Darmen's fully professional competition. Outside of the NRC, rugby is played only by schools teams. Despite this lack of competition/players, Darmen is still a relatively strong team internationally, having reached the Round of Sixteen at the last World Cup before losing to the #1 seed, 32-0. Its a game we'd rather forget, and certainly not representative of our playing ability.

Transportation
Each team will be provided with two coach buses to transport its players and staff as necessary. For the most part this will include travel from Scott City International Airport/the Port of Scott City (where all teams should arrive unless other arrangements have been made with the Darmeni government) to their host city and, once there, from their hotel to the practice facility/stadium. Teams may go on additional sight seeing excursions if they choose, however, unions must pay for these trips themselves. All travel expenses related specifically to practice/matches which takes place within Darmeni borders will be covered by the DRU.

Hotels
Each team will be assigned a hotel in its host city for the duration of the Group Stage by the DRU, and will be reassigned to different hotels as necessary should they reach the knockouts. All hotels will be three star hotels, and the cost of stay will be split 50-50 between the DRU and the union of the respective team. For a traveling party of 40 players/staff, approximately 20 rooms will be needed, at a rate of $41 per room, or $820 per night. If this amount presents too much of a financial burden for your union, please contact the DRU as soon as possible to discuss a solution.

All hotels will be equipped with wi-fi and fitness/spa amenities will be made available to the team free of charge. Teams will not share hotels, each being assigned to its own.

Weather
Darmen's weather varies widely. During the period of this tournament, the northern coast (Liverpool to northern Aylesbury) can expect temperatures in the mid-60's to low-70's (all temperatures in Fahrenheit), with some occasional rain showers. Moving inland, the northern mountains (Windsor east of Chippewa across to Bledia Arba) will experience much cooler temperatures, perhaps reaching no higher than the low-50's, with occasional snowfall at nighttime.

Starting with the northeastern coast and heading south (southern Aylesbury to Rogerton, along the coast), temperatures will gradually get warmer as the climate becomes more tropical, with temperatures in the low-80's, occasionally reaching into the 90's further south. Rain can be expected just about each night/early morning and humidity will be present throughout the day.

The southern portion of the country (a triangle from Hendricks to southwestern Kalenda to Western Chuckio) can be fairly warm, but precipitation occurs fairly less often than on the coast. temperatures will be in the low to mid-70's.

Language
English is spoken by 95.17% of the population, so if you are an English speaker, you should be able to communicate quite easily. In the Southeast (for this tournament that would mean Rogerton), Spanish will be the predominant language, spoken by 70.44% of that region's population. The third language of note is Legonian. If you're looking to make this trip a little more exotic, then trying your hand at speaking Legonian may do the trick. Be aware though, Legonian is an extremely difficult language to learn, and often makes no sense from a linguistic standpoint, even to those who do speak it well.

Banija National Rugby Team

While the giridiron & association codes are popular on the mainland, rugby is King on the Busoga Islands. They are two islands off the western coast of Banija, that have long been seen as culturally distinct form the rest of the nation. Over 90% of their population is Muslim, while the nation as a whole is 87% Mormon and 9% Muslim. Consequentially, They developed quite differently on a cultural basis, and this squad consists entirely of those from the Busoga Islands.

Head Coach: Shahram Diba. 59 years old.
Assistant Coach: Sasan Kasebi Sr. 49 years old.

Rugby is the third most popular sport in Elejamie, behind ice hockey and football (apologies for the retcon). While rugby league has a small but loyal fanbase and the ERC Sevens (held before the start of the ERC season) is a massive success, it's rugby union that reigns supreme in Elejamie. With the ERC being very successful since its inaugural season in 1978/79, the ERC Grand Final being one of the most-watched sporting events in the country and the Elejamian Universities XV (an all-star team made up of the best players from universities around the country) having an annual tour that tends to sell very well, as well as a plethora of talent over the years, it's safe to say that rugby union will be popular in Elejamie for years to come.

In the last tournament, they didn't do as great as their first tournament. They had a good group run, winning all but one of their games (a 17-15 loss to Nova Anglicana on the penultimate day), grabbing two bonus points and finishing second in the RepublicSoft Group, just three points behind the aforementioned Nova Anglicana, who managed to sweep the group. And indeed they were the favourites going into their Round of 16 game against Lisander, albeit by a slim margin. However, the match they were down 5-0 at half-time thanks to an unconverted try; although Adam Gates managed to level the scores and a conversion from Doug Westwood put Elejamie ahead, a drop goal from Matthew Gear gave Lisander an eventual 8-7 win to dump Elejamie out of the tournament (Lisander would be eliminated in the quarter-finals after a 16-6 loss to the Fair Republic).

And now they're back and looking for revenge. Apart from a couple of changes, the entire line-up is the same one as the team that took part in the Free Republics. Paul Debenham starting and EUXV alumnus Guinho both standing in for the injured Westwood, as well as former Davenport University player Logan Mankiewicz replacing the now-retired Gregory Miller as a substitute lock. Will they be able to cast off their poor performance and make it to the quarter-finals? Or will they unceremoniously fall again? Only time will tell...

Laneriti Stadium, Coventry, AVEN
Image

Home to the national football team and the national rugby union team, Laneriti Stadium was built in 1955 after the Elejamian FA decided on a permanent ground for the national football team. After narrowing down 400 options down to three, they eventually decided to name it after Arik Lanerit (aka Laneriti, d. 1915), a famous Iyilim politician who helped shape this country just as it was getting started. Originally designed to fit 60,000 people, it was expanded in the mid-90s to accomodate 82,500, which has remained the official capacity ever since. It has hosted every single Cup of Elejamie final since 2000 (as well as 23 previous cup finals before that) and all but one ERC (Elejamian Rugby Championship) Grand Final since the play-offs were introduced in time for the start of the 1990-91 ERC season; due to scheduling conflictments, the 2011 Grand Final was played at the Edgebaston Dome, with the Murgon Bullfrogs beating the Auckhampton Birch Trees 20-15 in extra time.

The stadium in the background is the Starmath Den, home ground of the Starmath Rovers football team in League Two and Coventry Jesters rugby union team, which play in the Elejamian Rugby Division One. It's also used as the training ground for the national football team, with the national rugby team having its own training ground outside of Coventry. It can also hold up to 15,000 people.

  • Ben Oldaker will celebrate his 32nd birthday on MD1, Esteban Moreno will celebrate his birthday on the day off and, should Elejamie make it that far Adrian Drew-Ciobanu will turn 25 the day after the final (or on the final if it does get pushed back to the 23rd).
  • If you're interested in having any of my players playing for any of your clubs, send me a TG and hopefully we should be able to sort things out.
  • Adam Gates (FB) can also play on the wing and Adrian Drew-Ciobanu can either be a loosehead or a tighthead prop.

SavojarSports.sj - inside reports from all Savojarna
Rugby World Cup 26 - Savojarna's roster is revealed

PLAYSTYLE

Savojarna's players are comparatively tall and strong, and many have good physical training from early on. However, while they excel at power, stamina and in some cases also speed, their technique usually isn't the best. The team is rather conservative, but not afraid from attacking. Because rugby is not a professional sport in Savojarna, the team is not expected to do extremely well. Following a bit of success on the Sevens circuit, which is the most popular code of Savojar rugby, with Union being somewhat minor in popularity but bigger in terms of league activity, and League practically non-existing, the SSA took it more serious and diverted some funding towards rugby, however it remains a semiprofessional sport with exceptionally little transferring, making for an interesting league structure.

MT socialist (mostly) island state - Cultural mixture of Scandinavia, Finland and Russia -Exports iron, steel, silver and wood - Low fantasy in terms of animal species - Sports-loving - 22.8 million inhabitants.

The adjective is Savojar; Savojarnan is not a word!

On the style of play:
-Our (outside) centre usually(95,0% of the time) plays as an additional full-back,so our 5/8(a.k.a. inside centre) will be the only player on that position.
-Our attacking system is firstly based on drop goals,so in a game we score 15 points it's more likely to be 5 drop goals, than 3 tries without conversions.

Various shots of players in camp , e.g in dressing room preparing for a game, stretching . Low sounds of general trainingoise, lockers closing, clatter of boots on concrete, whistle blowing etc. A voice over of a team talk by former World Cup winning coach Michael Connors plays during this.

CONNORS:
There's only one thing I want you all to be today, and that's hungry. Some people
will tell you to be calm, to be focused, to be careful, or to be aggressive. Others
would tell you to be accurate. But fortune doesn't favour the calm, the careful
or the accurate. This is a game of rugby. You're going to make mistakes. The ball
will be knocked on, tackles will be broken and penalties will be given. If you
spend the whole game trying to be accurate, you'll lose sight of the bigger picture.
You won't see the man rushing you as you try to pass, you won't see the support
runner and you will get rattled. But if you're hungry for success, you won't care
about the individual errors. If you make one, you'll do everything in your power to
get the ball back. If you need that ball at the bottom of the other teams ruck like
your next breath, you'll push anyone out of the way for it. If it's a race to line and
your next meal depends on it, you are not going to let the other man win. If you go
out on to that pitch and you want to win more than anything else, if each and
everyone of you hungers for that trophy, you will fight tooth and nail for every inch,
hit harder, run faster and you will win.

Cut to current team cheering in a huddle in a dressing room. They make their was into the tunnel. The camera gets close ups of players faces, their boots as they walk past the camera. Sound of the crowd in the stands begins to grow as the players walk towards the exit. Cut to title screen.

INT. TKCRU CONFERENCE HALL - EVENING

Players, media and guests enter room and take seats in the hall for the official jersey presentation ceremony. The scene is intercut with brief interviews/monologues from various people. Their names and positions fade in in text to the bottom right.

KAURI JONES:
Ah, we're just coming in now to do the jerseys. It's a fairly routine thing going off
what some of the older guys in the squad are saying, the ones that have been here
before in world cup squads. This is a first for me and most of the boys so it's an
exciting moment for sure.

ROB HANSON:
Yeah, I'd say this is a pretty big moment alright. I was in and out of the squad for
about 3 years before I became a regular over the last two. There's some big days
out like first tests, grudge matches and so on. This is the first time I've been in a
world cup squad so it's right up there already.

Cut to TRENT MORGAN, President of the TKCRU, and ANGUS FOLEY, head coach of the squad taking the stage.

MORGAN:
Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests, members of the media and player, I'd
like to welcome you all to this evenings presentation of the jerseys to the players
of the Kiaser Colonies 26th Rugby World Cup squad. This is the first official step in
our World Cup campaign before the team fly out to Darmen next month. Few could
forget about our history with rugby World Cups in Darmen, when Michael Connors
lead us to the title. Hopefully the man I'm about to hand you over to can do the
same with this group of players. Please welcome, head coach Angus Foley.

Foley approaches the stand to the applause of the crowd and shakes Morgan's hand.

FOLEY:
Thank you. Thank you. I'd like to begin with the presentation and give a few words
after. Our props for the 26th Rugby World Cup...

Some highlights of names being read, players coming up and receiving a jersey from Trent Morgan plays. End with the name of the captain. Shots of players posing for photographs.

DURAL COLE:
Ah it's such an honour really. I missed out on this last time round with a neck injury
so it's been tops to get up there and receive a jersey. Doubly special to be
captaining my country to a World Cup.

HOHEPA PARATA:
I'm absolutely delighted. I know for myself, I haven't been in the professional game
for very long so to me it means a lot that the coach has the faith to put me in the
team for the biggest stage in rugby. Then you've got the other guys like Woody and
Si who have been at this a long time, true veterans of the game here, that have
earned their place through years of hard work and it's great to be here with them.

ARRIVAL
3

INT. ARRIVAL GATE SCOTT CITY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT - DAY

The Kiaser Colonies team enters to some cheering from a small crowd of travelling fans and expats that have come to greet the team at the airport. Shots of players signing objects, taking selfies and chatting with fans. Clips of interviews with fans follow.

DAVID THURSTON:
My wife and I have been living here in Darmen for about 10 years now. Still as big
fans as we were before we left so we had to make the trip over from Liverpool to
meet the boys when they landed here in Scott City. We've got our tickets to the big
game against the hosts sorted and we'll be looking forward to that. Hopefully we
can get a result there or so I can head into work with the bragging rights after

JULIE KERR:
I traveled over the day before from Highroyds. Here since about 11, waiting the
hour and a half to see the team. Well worth it though. They're a great bunch so I
hope they can go all the way, give me a reason to go looking for finals tickets
(Laughs)

EXT. AIRPORT - DAY

Players getting onto team bus as fans watch on from path.

BAMBAM MALANGI:
It's really fantastic to see the fans coming out this early. There aren't too many
times when you get a greeting party when you arrive in another country. You've
got people who've given up a lot of time and come a long way, either from home
or that have been living here in Darmen for a while and this really goes to show
what this World Cup means to them. Just makes a big difference for us that
we've got a big following behind us for it.

The team bus honks at the crowd as it pulls away. The players wave from the windows and the fans cheer and wave flags back as it drives off into traffic, headed to the The Great German Shepherd Hotel in Scott City.

THE CHIEFDOM OF COPPER CUPRUM
NATIONAL RUGBY UNION TEAM

This is the first time that Copper Cuprum will be participating in an international rugby sevens competition, as well as the AVBF Sevens. Rugby is the most popular sport in Copper Cuprum, and although rugby league is the more popular code in the Chiefdom, both rugby union and rugby sevens still have a decent following. Copper Cuprum had been long isolated from the international community since it is a small island archipelago located deep in the middle of the Lazarus Ocean, far from any regular shipping lanes since man first sailed ships. The nation was only discovered by the Fleftic Navy in 1914, when they were searching for the daughter of President Rufus Wole Mensah, whose ship was wrecked in the general vicinity of the islands. Arriving in the capital of the islands, they discovered that Chief Zed had made the President's daughter his queen, generating a sudden alliance between the two countries. And Copper Cuprum was also rich in copper, so that was a good thing for Abanhfleft too...

BASIC INFORMATION
Name of nation:
The Chiefdom of Copper Cuprum
Demonym: Copperite
Kits: Initially, the Copperite national rugby sevens team was not supposed to wear any kits as ordinary people know them. Instead they would have played wearing only white loincloths and nothing else. However, in the interests of modesty and compliance with the international standard, the Copperite team has elected to choose a new uniform with alternating black and white hoops and white shorts.
Team colors: Black and white
Style modifier: +1.00 (A balanced team with a slight focus on offense)
Head coach: Count Tumale Boweba (47 y/o, Copper Cuprum)
Notes: It is Copperite tradition to slit the throat of a live chicken before a game and then spread the spilled blood on the field. This is the Copperites' version of the haka.

The Rugby Rundown
with Graham O'Doherty

As one World Bowl ends, another Rugby Union World Cup begins. Cousin Dara finally gets to rest his poor hands and fingers, staving off that dreaded carpal tunnel syndrome for maybe a few more years, but now it is time for me to get cracking with my poor hands and fingers. Yes, ladies and gents, it's time for the Rugby Rundown! Apologies for being quiet in the past two instances of the rugby sevens schedule but not only did I have not enough time to write about the exploits of our rugby sevens team, but the Wi-Fi at both the Alpen View Brew Festival and the Lisander Rugby Festival was also spotty at best. I honestly expected better Internet connections from those countries, but then again, maybe it's just my laptop. (No, it's not. It can't be. Can it be?) But that's all in the past now; we've got a brand spanking new Rugby Union World Cup in our hands! But before we get into that, let's talk about the past two rugby sevens series that we've already played.

AVBF 7s III
First stop, Neu Engollon and the Alpen View Brew Festival. The Festival itself has been held for the past six years already, and the accompanying rugby sevens tournament was only begun about three years ago. Abanhfleft were participants in that inaugural competition where we qualified for the plate quarterfinals before bowing out to Aquitayne. We did one better in the second edition, beating the Unified Sunrise Islands in the quarterfinal before losing a thriller against Barunia. But now, with the third edition of the Alpen View Brew Festival Sevens upon us, let's take a closer look at how Abanhfleft did.

Match One (Abanhfleft vs. The Kiaser Colonies)
Abanhfleft's first game in AVBF Sevens III was against the Kiaser Colonies, a self-proclaimed rugby-mad nation looking to make a massive impact in the sport to the rest of the multiverse. I wouldn't say that Abanhfleft itself is also rugby mad; almost certainly it's not as rugby mad as the Kiasers except maybe for the population of rugby followers here tipping things way in our favor. But as for the game itself, I believe our sevens lads gave a good accounting for themselves even though it was the Kiasers who got points on the board first, with Seta Naisarani forcing a turnover from Paul Partridge that eventually led to the first try of the game courtesy of the fleet-footed George Beale.

Abanhfleft quickly responded with two tries of their own courtesy of Paul Partridge, making amends for his earlier fumble, and Dixon Cochabamba, who was always going to be a threat no matter what due to his extensive experience with the national rugby union team. Partridge missed the conversion for his shot, but he was able to score on Dixon's try to give Abanhfleft a 12-5 advantage coming into half time. The lads compiled more misery upon the Kiasers at the start of the second half with Marouane Mahout, in the words of the Kiasers themselves, "steamed home from their own 22 after burning replacement Dan Horne on the wing and running in closer to the posts". Paul Partridge converted to make it even more difficult for the Kiaser Colonies. But they were not going to go down without a fight, that was for sure. Heath Newsome scored a try for the Colonies after his teammate booted the ball, and Newsome was quickest to react to this development and score right between the posts to make it easier for his kicker to score the conversion.

But Abanhfleft would have the last laugh as, with the Kiaser Colonies on a 3-2 matchup against Abanhfleft and Seta Naisarani open for an almost certain try if the ball could find its way to him, Fleftic captain Adam Jaden Sforza leaped to catch the pass from Corey Barnett, and though Naisarani made Jaden boy work hard for the try, support arrived in the form of young Bradley Votaw, who only had to walk across the line and ground the ball with his chest to make the try official. Paulie Partridge had just enough time to score another conversion to seal the game in favor of Abanhfleft, but both teams walked off the pitch shaking hands and congratulating each other, Abanhfleft for the win and the Kiaser Colonies for the effort.

Mahout 8' c
Votaw 13' c
Con: Partridge (3/4)

Match Two: Abanhfleft vs. Alice Bay
Now onto Alice Bay, where after a healthy dram of beer from the brewers and a lunch of sausages, yours truly sat down to watch Abanhfleft engage in battle against Alice Bay in the mild and warm afternoon of Burgunden. Whatever words of motivation that the trainers had given the lads during the lunch break must have motivated them enough to really get them going and moving against Alice Bay, who were no slouches in rugby, it has to be said. It just so happened that the Abanhfleft that they played that afternoon was both high off of the victory against the Kiaser Colonies and looking to make some amends for slipping up so early in the game. Maybe they also ate some of those Burgunden sausages during the lunch break? I know I felt like tackling a heavily muscled guy into the ground after eating those sausages. I must get the recipe any way that I can.

But as for the game itself, well, the result speaks for itself. Not only did Abanhfleft shut Alice Bay out of the game entirely, the lads also dumped 50 points on the Alice Bay boys! Lads, there is such a thing as sportsmanship! But Alice Bay were just piss poor (forgive my language, but that's the unfortunate truth of the matter); no wonder they let slip such an incredible number of points and didn't even manage to score at least some of their own. And despite the extremely lopsided encounter, there was only ever one penalty that Abanhfleft actually used to score three points; all the others they used to move and run the ball for touchdowns--sorry, tries. I'm still recovering from World Bowl fever and confusing the two sports is ever so easy for me right now.

But that's the truth of the matter: Abanhfleft scored seven tries, six out of seven conversions, and one penalty. It was an entirely lopsided contest where the other team just didn't know what hit them. I'd say a few more words about this game but I'm afraid I'm going to overuse terms like "lopsided", "terrible", "extremely piss-poor", and other words of that ilk. So forgive me if I trail off here right now. Oh, and before I go, news of an accident in Alice Bay involving the under-17 team of one of their rugby associations reached us at the afternoon, just about after this game was finished, which must have really soured the day for Alice Bay. Hey, that rhymed.

Abanhfleft (50)

Sforza (2): 3' c, 7' c

Pen: Partridge 10'

Match Three: Copper Cuprum vs. Abanhfleft
Now we arrive at the evening match; Copper Cuprum versus Abanhfleft. The Copperites started off this match in the same way that all the Copperites started their rugby matches, with the ritual sacrifice of a chicken as well as the sprinkling of its blood all over the pitch as part of the Copperites' prayer to their goddess of luck and success for, well, luck and success in this rugby sevens game. And there really must be something to this ritual as it was the Copperites that got off to a bright and good start in the evening game by scoring the first try of the night game; Irakta Kasugna managing to ground the ball with seventy seconds elapsed after a good fight against Paul Partridge and Dixon Cochabamba. And Copper Cuprum scored once again, will you believe it? I know that the Copperites love rugby league much, much more than rugby union but they were also capable of a good showing in union, as their teams' performances in the Rugby Coalition have showed. Banunu Honele managed to dink away from Marouane Mahout to ground the ball in the corner of the field, which unfortunately made sure that Satusa Heyedy would miss this second conversion for the Chicken Killers (not the Copperites' official nickname, of course, but what else can you describe what they keep doing to those poor chickens they use for their sacrifices? At least I know for a fact that they cook the now-headless chicken and eat it as their post-game meal after the game. Now I'm hungry thinking about chicken) and make things slightly easier for the Fleftics in the second half.

And it wouldn't even last until half-time, the Copperites' lead. Dixon Cochabamba landed Abanhfleft's first try of the game after flying above Satusa Heyedy and Homeka Omega for a try right between the sticks, making it easy for Paul Partridge to score the conversion. After the half-time break, Abanhfleft appeared to not be done with dealing damage to Copper Cuprum as the players were properly pumped up for the contest, at least the second part of it anyway. Dixon Cochabamba scored his second try of the game after forcing a mistake from the Copperite utility Hiram Massoudoglu, but this time Partridge couldn't convert despite being put in what could be said was a favorable position for the Fleftics' designated kicker. Adam Jaden Sforza and Marouane Mahout then scored two tries in quick succession to complete the Fleftic turnaround and victory and put Abanhfleft in the clear for top spot in the group stage.

Copper Cuprum (12)
Try: Kasugna 2' c
Honele 5' m
Con: Heyedy (1/2)
Abanhfleft (26)
Try: Cochabamba (2) 6' c, 8' m
Sforza 11' c
Mahout 12' c
Con: Partridge (3/4)

Match Four: Abanhfleft vs. Hutanjia
After a good night's sleep for everyone involved, rugby sevens was back in action almost immediately, with Abanhfleft's morning meeting in day two being against Hutanjia, themselves a storied rugby side. Hutanjia are practically legends in both union and league and were no slouches either in sevens, so Abanhfleft needed to have their A-game with them if they were to stand a chance of winning and keeping their record unblemished. And, wonder of wonders, Abanhfleft actually brought out their A-game and secured a historic victory against Hutanjia, and it wasn't just a close win either; it was actually a good and dominant win!

Where should we start, then? Definitely with Marouane Mahout's first try of the game. It was a thing of beauty, the kind of thing that has to be seen to be believed. He beat three tackles on his way to the spot between the sticks where he grounded the ball for the try and give Paul Partridge a good chance to convert. Abanhfleft were then awarded a penalty from which Partridge scored once again to put Abanhfleft 10-0 up against Hutanjia, but the team knew that they had little if any time to rest on their laurels as Hutanjia can come back with just the snap of a finger. And Hutanjia did try their darndest to come back into this game, and they appeared to have done that with back-to-back tries on either side of half time but because of the difficult positions in which they scored their tries, their kicker was unable to convert on both occasions, giving us only a tie game as a result. Then we responded to their response with two tries from Jaden Sforza and who else but our own utility player Bradley Votaw? Paul Partridge converted both times despite a particularly tough angle from Sforza's try to really give Abanhfleft a vital edge in this contest, and the Fleftics were able to finally close out the game without much more action from the other team.

Votaw 12' c
Con: Partridge (3/3)
Pen: Partridge 4'

Con: Kicker (0/2)

Match Five: Reformed Lazinara vs. Abanhfleft
Well, I have to be honest, Abanhfleft's second afternoon match against Reformed Lazinara was basically a dead rubber, and it showed in the team selection, with all of Abanhfleft's previous reserves now making their first starts in the competition. And boy did they take full advantage of the opportunity given to them and paid back the faith given to them by the staff by absolutely demolishing Reformed Lazinara.

Radomir Rakitic scored three tries in the match, and the rest was divided up between Rupert Dearth (who got two tries), Ken Greathouse, and Justiniano Reid. Reformed Lazinara was only able to score one try, and they weren't able to convert it despite it being in a good position for their kicker. Oh, well. This match means that Abanhfleft finishes right on top of Group D and Reformed Lazinara are dead last. You might be wondering why this is quite short but I'm just going to say that I was quite tired that day and not in the mood to try to talk about anything anymore, which would eventually include the Cup quarterfinal against the Kiaser Colonies. Maybe it was the sausages. Or maybe it's the beer? Or maybe it was the combination of sausages and beer that upset my poor stomach so much. Ooh, er....

Reformed Lazinara (5)
Try: Prop 9' m
Con: Kicker (0/1)
Abanhfleft (49)
Try: Greathouse 1' c
Dearth (2) 3' c, 11' c
Rakitic (3) 4' c, 6'c, 13' c
Reid 7' c
Con: Zilner (7/7)

Cup Quarterfinal: Abanhfleft vs. The Kiaser Colonies
And now here it is, the highly anticipated rematch between Abanhfleft and the Kiaser Colonies for the honor of advancing to the Cup semifinals of the Alpen View Brew Festival Sevens. Abanhfleft were the slight favorites here, having won against the Kiaser Colonies in their first meeting in this tournament just yesterday, but the Kiasers had some odds going for them as well as they had had a good tournament after their opening loss against Abanhfleft. Who was going to win in this game of very evenly-matched teams?

The answer, it turns out, is the Kiaser Colonies, but it is through no fault of the Fleftic team that they were beaten in the quarterfinal by a team that they had beaten before. Some would say it was luck; others say it was fate. But the physical facts of the matter is that the game swung back and forth between the two sides before the Kiasers finally landed the winning try with only seconds left to go on the clock, and the fact that they were also able to score the conversion was most probably icing on the cake for the Kiasers. And just like the previous meeting between these two sides, hands were shaken and thanks were given for a great game and for both teams fighting to the end. But of course the loss was quite a bitter pill to swallow for me as we had gone undefeated through the group stage and only got tripped up in the quarterfinals, as usual, but no hard feelings, Kiaser Colonies....

Abanhfleft (21)
Try: Mahout (2) 2' c, 5' c
Borisov 13' c
Con: Partridge (3/3)
The Kiaser Colonies (28)
Try: Naisarani 4' c
Beale (2) 7' c, 10' c
Skelton 12' c
Con: King (4/4)

And that does it for me and the Rugby Rundown! Next time, we'll catch up on the recently concluded URSA Sevens and whatever's happened in the Rugby Union World Cup. Be seeing you.... XOXO :p

Mattijana usually employ a running style with short sharp passes and quick offloads where possible. This is believed to counter a weight deficiency, therefore avoiding set pieces and large, slow rucks and mauls.

SavojarSports.sj - inside reports from all Savojarna
Rugby Union is back: The WC 26 Preview

In many ways, rugby appears to be a curious leftover of ancient times in Savojarna. There are no professional clubs like in ice hockey, football or handball, nor is there the amateur approach based on unions and local council clubs used for sports like volleyball or basketball. Instead, rugby is governed directly by the Savojarsk Rugbyförbundet (SRFB) and its subordinate local councils, with all of Savojarna divided into the fifteen historic provinces of the country. These fifteen provinces act as de facto semiprofessional clubs, which can engage in player trading, however it is highly frowned upon and hardly ever done directly. This leads to Savojar rugby being much more even than all other semiprofessional or professional sports - no CASK or Storevik to dominate the game. This is a direct consequence of the role rugby's predecessors played in Savojarna - a preparatory game or even substitution for war, which lead to the sport taking up many wartime customs.

One of these customs is the so-called "banging of the shields", a custom that is done in Savojarna before each domestic game and comes directly from the old Savojar battle customs, but has been phased out internationally. However, Banging of the Shields will still be performed by the fans after the national anthem and probably also by the team before important matches, like KO games. The tradition comes from the the time when the Savojar Jarldoms were still rivalling each other for the imperial title. Their armies smacked their weapons against the shields and tried to make as much noise as possible in an appeal to their Gods in order to sway war luck. As Savojar rugby players don't carry shields and weapons anymore since a 1672 edict by Emperor Fredrik II. banned armoury from sports events, they just chant and make as much noise as possible with what they carry, however fans in Savojar stadia often use different kinds of props to be louder. Russian players often don't participate in the Banging due to their different religious background and a claim that the Banging is invoking the imperial past of Savojarna, but many Russian players on the national team engage in singing moving choruses; and the Archbishop of St. Andrei has commissioned a special chorus for the occasion of the Rugby National Team, acknowledging the cultural significance of the team.

Following a rather successful World Cup 25, Savojarna have established themselves in the rugby union world and lay on the 20th rank, qualifying them for Pot 2. This has the advantage of the Savojar team dodging numerous potential heavyweights of the international scene, such as Mattijana, Alice Bay and, thanks to hosts Darmen moving up into the first pot, Lisander. In the first match of the tournament, we will already face our hardest opponents, the number 11 in the world: Elejamie. In the latest World Cup, we had already clashed with Elejamie and were able to hold on to this strong side for one half, even briefly taking a 6-10 lead after the break. However, in the final 35 minutes, the Elejamian team scored two tries followed by conversions, taking home a 20-10 victory. There is a certain potential that the team can capitalise on the circumstances of playing Elejamie right at the start of the tournament and hope for a tactically not yet perfect Elejamian side, but if we want to take any points out of that starter we must not give up any easy points and be on top of the game for the entire 80 minutes.

Following this game will be unranked Tomure, about whom we know relatively little. Even though the Tomure rugby federation has promised us to send a roster for our journalistic purposes, however, they have not yet followed up on this promise. Following this up is Aji No Moto, of whom we know even less and whose federation has not yet provided us with any information. However, according to our scouts in these countries, they are not highly developed rugby nations that Savojarna should have a fair shot at beating, and we do indeed need to do so if we are to proceed to the KO stage. It remains to be seen whether or not this holds true - maybe Savojarna's scouts have also been sidetracked by the drinks served in the lower league stadia and never got round to scout the actual prime of the country, as seems to have happened when we asked them to look at the Filindostani football leagues before WC79.

After the two unranked sides, we have a bye day. With fresh energy, Savojarna will go into the final match against the Greater Vakolicci Haven, which is likely going to decide our fate if everything goes according to expectations. The Vakolicci Haven's Sevens team has recently taken part in the URSA Sevens, where they have not managed to win a single game and ended the tournament with a -86 point difference. They have hardly done better in the last edition of the big thing, where they only managed six points in the entire tournament, however, they held third-place-finishers Racao to a 0-3 and showed some defensive proficiency that shouldn't get our guys too cocky about the match. Overall, the group draw seems fairly favourable to Savojarna. With a concentrated play and no unnecessary moves to put us at risk, I dare saying that the chances for Savojarna's first participation in the Playoff Round are fairly high, and our boys should be favoured in every match aside from the opener against Elejamie.

Briefly looking at other groups, D seems to be the Pool Of Death, with Nova Anglicana - who beat Savojarna quite clearly in the last edition of the RUWC - the Alpine Union and newcomers Copper Cuprum, who seemed to be put on fire by their weird chicken ritual when they played our Sevens team in Lisander. At the URSA Sevens, they won a close clash against Savojarna 19-17, however we don't know how their first attempt at Union glory will play out. However, Quantilia and Northwest Kalactin - barring a surprise - will likely have a very tough time in this competitive group. Similarly, Abanhfleft and Mattijana have drawn a potential challenge in football surprise team Filindostan, who could however not convince the rugby world in the URSA Sevens. Similarly, we will be thrilled to see Banija's attempt at rugby glory after their surprising quarterfinal run in the World Cup of Hockey. Can the Banijans translate their potential to get themselves into a playing rush into rugby? If you want answers to all these questions, tune in the 26th Rugby Union World Cup on STV2 and the savojarsports.sj live streams from tomorrow onwards, with all Savojar matches displayed live and our daily RUWC Magazine showing you the highlights of the RUWC every evening.

Style mod: -5. Ko-oren plays a hyper-defensive style with emphasis on the forwards. The kicking game is something the team uses successfully. As a risk-averse team, it also leads to giving up good angles for attack.

General Information
Rugby is the national sport of Lisander. And Lisander is doing his best to reach the top of the world. The ten-season plan reaches season 3, but this time it started just warm. The Irises fell in the quarterfinals at URSA Sevens. Patricio Bernauer led the same AVBF Sevens team to the field, but it seems that the opponents studied the speedy game that the Lisanderian coach has been proposing.

But the team has been playing well. Good appearances in the Dwile Tournament and the NSRB Sevens Series are a great sign. The team comes undoubtedly to play for the title. Last time, when they were inexperienced, they reached the quarterfinals. Asked in an interview about the goal of the Irises for RWC 26, Leonard Assen replied: "It's the title. It's always the title, of course."

UNIFORMS
