Information about the Track

The Uberpiste is located in the Dunnes Winter Park along with a ski jump, aerials/moguls runs and an arena. The track is one of the faster tracks, with long sweeping curves, finishing with a Petersen turn. The track features separate starting points for the luge and doubles luge, while the skeleton and bobsleds start at the top of the track. The track has been certified by the Dunnes Sliding Association, and features all of the latest safety certifications. Prior to the Sliding World Cup, it was used for domestic competitions and as a training facility by the Dunnes Olympic Team.

Information about the town of Stevenson & the Dunnes Winter Park

Stevenson is located on the coast of the Lesser Inland Sea, and is home to some of Dunnes largest sports fans. The Dunnes Winter Park is home to Ski Jump and Freestyle Skiing Facilities in addition to the Uberpiste, and is the main training center for a majority of winter sport Olympians in Dunnes. The Winter Park is connected to Stevenson and the Stevenson Airport by light rail. Weather wise, rain and snow can be expected at this time of the year.

Stevenson, Dunnes
The Kannapian athletes left West Phoenicia feeling an overwhelming sense of happiness and excitement. The athletes had done well in West Phoenicia, and have outdone even what they expected of themselves. They were being praised back in Kannap for their great placement in the ranks after their showing in West Phoenicia - the Kannapian team had ranked 2nd out of all the nations present. The Kannapians were ready to take on the world but for now, they were ready for the next leg of the competition in Stevenson, Dunnes.

The team had left West Phoenicia on an early morning flight today and had arrived in Dunnes happy and excited to visit the new nation. They had finally, after a journey, arrived at the town of Stevenson, located on the coast of a body of water called the Lesser Inland Sea. The town was promoted as being home to some of the nation's largest sports fans and the location of the Dunnes Winter Park and Uberpiste. The athletes had taken the light rail to the winter park from the airport. Upon arrival, the Kannapians took a short self-guided walk around the complex. They then went on their way to the unfortunate restaurant of their choosing and crowded the place with the insistence that they would all eat at the same table together. The team ate together, just as they had in West Phoenicia and as they would together before all legs of the series as they entered new nations. Following dinner, they spent the rest of the night resting in their hotel rooms.

The Kannapians had proven to themselves - and the world - that they were here not to be easily pushed down in the competition. They had proven to themselves - and the world - that they were here to be fierce, to compete hard, and to feel proud, happy, and accomplished. Nobody would take that from them - nobody could.

West Phoenician Sliding Winter Athletes wow home crowd.

The West Phoenician Winter Athletes did not disappoint the home crowd at the Queen Juno Arena in Holly Heights, Yule Island with some fantastic results coming through from the Sliding World Cup. Must watch athletes are;

Lien Nam, a recent gold medal winner in the women's Luge at the Nations Sport Federations Council Winter Games. Not only is up against women but also men. She sits in second place, but will her stamina keep her there. Also hungry for a Luge win is Babs Druizea, who is currently in 5th place.

Over in Luge Doubles both West Phoenician teams dominated the day. While the home turf often gives players a boost especially with an increase in citizens cheering in the stands. But Julie Washington, Julie Queen, Cain De Monti and Thomas Pilfer rack it up to skill and fierce training.

Over in Skeleton, Jillian Pilliano, a silver medalist at the Nations Sport Federations Council Winter Games currently places 2nd. By the end of the tour a top 3 will give her amazing momentum heading into the Winter Olympic Games.

Lastly Jayson Wellington / Lucas Heart currently place 2nd in the 2-man Bobsled.

The West Phoenician Winter Olympics Sports Minister has cited across media channels he is proud of the Sliding results. When it comes to the Winter Olympics the Sliding events were their weak events. Hopefully this Sliding World Cup will thrust some fresh West Phoenicians into the spotlight and make a name for themselves in Prescott at the next Olympics.

Next stop on the Sliding World Cup tour will be Stevenson, Dunnes

Sliding Athletes Begin World Cup Competition
Dietmar Peura Takes First in Skeleton Competition
Image
Skeleton athlete Dietmar Peura begins his second run which would land him atop the podium.

HOLLY HEIGHTS, WEST PHONECIA- Nacaltora's twenty sliding athletes began their season of competition this week at Queen Juno Stadium in Holly Height, West Phoencia. The competition saw the skeleton, bobsleigh and luge athletes compete for a place atop the standings. Nacaltora's athletes looked to get off to a strong start against some of the world's best competition.

Skeleton:
The first day of competition saw Nacaltora's skeleton athletes put on a strong showing. Dietmar Peura, the twenty-four year old from Alva left his stamp on the world of skeleton. In what was the first competition in Queen Juno Stadium's young history, Peura walked away as it's first champion with run times of 52.90 and 52.42. The second being the fastest in the competition and earning Peura the top spot on the podium. "I'm just thrilled to be out here and taking my skills to a global stage." Peura said. "The track conditions were great. After the first run, I knew I was up with the top group and had a shot at taking the podium and I was able to adjust in that second run to accomplish that." Thirty-eight year old, Bertil Herbertson of Flirough also had an impressive showing. Herbertson sat in 6th place after the first run in a field of twenty-nine athletes. "I felt good today" Herbertson said. "I think I showed that I can still compete at a high level and I'm looking to take that to Uberpiste in a few days." On the women's side, Kizzy Meissner (26) of Brey had a nightmare of a day, finishing in 28th. "Things just didn't go the way I'd planned today" Meissner said. "I need to make some adjustments and improve next time around." Overall, the skeleton squad proved themselves among the top in the competition and look to continue their strong start when they take to the track in Stevenson, Dunnes.

Bobsleigh:
The bobsleigh competition on the second day in Holly Heights did not quite go as planned for the members of the 2-man and 4-man teams that represented Nacaltora. The men's 2-man team of Ingemar Isaacson and Eugen Holst were consistently mediocre finishing both runs in 11th place out of 19 teams. "Today was an opportunity to see where we stood at the beginning of competition on a brand new track" Ingemar Isaacson (22) from Kerton said. "We know what we need to work on and we're looking forward to our next opportunity." Isaacson is the driver for both the 2-man team and the 4-man team of Nacaltora 1. The female duo of Filippa Gottschalk and Eva Winter showed strong improvement in their second run jumping from 15th position after the first run to 9th place in the final standings. When asked, Eva Winter said "We are happy with that start. The first run was a little bumpy, and we felt like we got into a rhythm in the second run."

The 4-man competition was a testing ground for the women aboard Nacaltora 2. Eva Winter, Lauren Geiger, Petronela Brittain and Leona Rademaker finished in 8th place in both runs. "I thought we did alright considering this is the first event of the season. We don't have a developed chemistry quite yet and we were on a brand new surface for the first time" brake-woman Leona Rademaker said. "I think Eva steered us real well and we'll only improve as the season continues." For the men aboard Nacaltora 1, things couldn't get much worse. The sled flipped over on both runs, disqualifying them from the competition. No one was injured in either crash and driver Ingemar Isaacson explained the incidents after the competition. "I could feel the sled getting lift on the left side when we came out of the turn and I tried too hard to correct it and we flipped. The second one was similar. I just need to do better. There's really no explanation for it."

Nacaltora 1 flips over on the first run of the competition.

Luge:
The third day in Holly Heights saw 8 of Nacaltora's luge athletes compete. Dilwyn Van Bokhoven was the favorite from Nacaltora in the individual competition. Van Bokhoven finished just off the podium in 4th place. "He wanted to start the season off strong and become the first to reach the podium this season" Van Bokhove's coach, Gregg Seeger said. "Dilwyn is new to international competition, but he prepared well and I think he showed that he matches up well with the competition." Katinka Lennox and Kamil Williams both failed to qualify for the second round of competition. In the doubles competition, Dilwyn Van Bokhoven and Konstanty Sands took 8th place and will look to keep pace with the top half of the field going into round two. "I think we wanted to see where we stood and go from there" Sands said. The luge relay team of Katinka Lennox, Kamil Williams, Marsaili Sörensen & Aric De Haven finished third from the bottom in a disappointing showing. "I really didn't have my best day" Katinka Lennox said. "I know I can improve and look to take my performance up a few notches in the coming rounds."

The sliding team will now travel to Stevenson, Dunnes for the second round of the World Cup. Stay tuned to follow all the action from every round of the Sliding World Cup.

Gavin Marone smiles as the camera pans around the news room, he stares at the camera in front of him and starts to speak when given the cue that the camera in front of him is the one now filming.

"Hello Kannapians, my name is Gavin Marone and welcome back to today's episode of Kannapian Athletes International. We are once again looking at the results of the first leg of the NS Sliding World Cup, which is complete and our athletes are in Stevenson, Dunnes right now for the second leg of the series.

Luge is an interesting sport and our athletes did their best to master the event. In the first singles run, Cyrus Raeburn finished 10th, Amias Beck finished 12th, and Leland Chance finished 19th. After the second run, Beck pushed forward to 10th, Chance pushed forward to 17th, and Raeburn fell down to 15th.

In the first doubles run, Anson Foster and Delmar Foster, brothers from Port Stephen, finished 3rd. They were followed closely by Cyrus Raeburn and Amadeus Fellows who finished 4th. After the second run, both teams had lost one spot. The Foster brothers finished 4th and Raeburn and Amadeus finished 5th.

Finally in luge relay, the Kannapian team finished 6th. On the screen now, as well as can be found on our online page where updates of the NS Sliding World Cup are being placed, you can see the results of the top three in each of the standings as well as the positioning of Kannapians."

Mattijana 5th after Opening Round of Sliding World Cup

Mattijana sit in fifth place after round one of the sliding world cup in Holly Heights, West Phoenicia with a total of 126 points. Individually there were also encouraging results. Dan Ljusan and Matej Dimitrov claimed gold in the 2-person bob whilst Izara Alina, who won Mattijana's first international gold in the inaugeral Iced Runnings tournament at the Hollesbirjke, also won gold in the luge singles.
Elsewhere, Mattijana's luge relay team came second in their event and Louisa Aspelov took joint 7th in the skeleton with Mattias Burgisijo also in the top 10. Mattijana's 4-person teams had a dissapointing Saturday however, finishing 9th and 12th.

The skeleton was the first event of the three-day period and is the event that Mattijana have pinpointed for success in Electrum. Mattias Burgisijo is their main hope for gold and will be reasonably satisfied with a 10th in West Phoenicia. A scrappy first run, including a hefty tap on the exit of turn 8, meant he slipped down the order in his first run, but an improved second on a quickening track pulled him from 15th to 10th.
Louisa Aspelov also had a good race at the Queen Juno Stadium. A solid first run of 53.12 seconds put her in a tie for 9th with Lord Guy di Fitzroy, but a poor run for the home man gave her a chance to move up the order and she took it well, taking the scalps of Shona Thornberg, who's sled missed a groove at the start of the race, sending her into a time-leaking skid, and Nikora Hohepa as she moved up a couple of spots behind Joey Tagart.

Mattijana's third hopeful Ameli Maurizia had a less-happy time however, missing the round two cut by one place and 13 hundredths of a second.

The two-person bobsled was a surprise success for the Mattijanan competitors. Dan Ljusan and Matej Dimitrov were top of the pile after run one, followed by just 5 hundredths by Katarina Malekova and Kara Velezia. The two women dropped down the order to 4th, but Ljusan and Dimitrov held off the brilliant challenge of Jayson Wellington and Lucas Heart from West Phoenicia to take the gold.
High standards then for the four man teams. MTJ 1 layed down a good opener, putting them in 5th, but MTJ 2 driven by topped them, going fastest with a time of 51.18. Things fell apart in run 2 however. A big skid for Mattijana 1 pushed them all the way down to 12th before a horrific start for the former leaders meant for a dramatic end as they slipped to 9th.

With day 3 came the luge and a dominant display from Izara Alina in the singles. The fastest two runs of the competition gave the 26 year old a 6 tenth lead. The doubles completely contrasted that however. Finja Kolinov and Sofija Hetzcota crashed out in heat one, flipping the sled on the exit of turn 7, but recovered to help Mattijana to an excellent second place in the relay alomg with Razmov and Alina.

The next event comes from the Uberpiste in Stevenson, Dunnes, a track with a very similar profile to the one in West Phoenicia and so ahould favour similar athletes. Yet changes in form are common and vitally important on the ice and identical results are far from likely.
The socialist republic of Mattijana:
As if Austria, Slovenia, North-Eastern Europe and Sweden were merged together into some weird stew of a country.
through resilience, we are strong!

Peura Atop Podium Again in Dunnes
The twenty-four year old continues his hot start with a second victory in the World Cup.

Dietmar Peura begins his first run at the Uberpiste in Stevenson, Dunnes.

Skeleton
Day one of the second round of the Sliding World Cup took place today in Stevenson, Dunnes. Nacaltora's skeleton athletes took to the track looking to build off of their strong performance in Holly Heights. Dietmar Peura (24) of Alva gained some national attention from his dominating performance in the first round and looked to continue that in Stevenson. Bertil Herbertson (38) was coming off a strong performance and desired to improve his standing in Stevenson. On the women's side, Kizzy Meissner (26) was coming off a disappointing outing in the first round and wanted to show that she could keep pace with some of the better athletes in the competition. When asked about the difference between Queen Juno Stadium in West Phonecia and the Uberpiste in Dunnes, Meissner said that "both tracks run pretty similar, but the Uberpiste has a little more history and has been worn in as opposed to Queen Juno last time around. I just need to have the runs I know I'm capable of having and put myself in a better position."

By far the most impressive showing once again belonged to Dietmar Peura. Peura's first run of 52.42 matched the run that clinched the podium for him in Holly Heights. After the first run, Peura sat in second position behind Mattias Burgisijo of Mattijana. "I knew what adjustments I needed to make going into the last run and things just came together" Peura said after the competition. "I knew I had a chance to be towards the top before the season and to be sitting here with two victories heading back home to Avoncore in round three is a dream come true." Peura's second run was 52.24, approximately two tenths off of the track record. " Peura has begun to create quite a name for himself and has caused a buzz to stir as he prepares to compete back at Avoncore Sliding Centre in the next round.

Bertil Herbertson did not have the day he was hoping for. The thirty-eight year old missed qualifying for the second round with a first run time of 53.67. "Just not the way I'd planned for things to go today" Herbertson said in an interview with the Standard's Mack Abbink. "I need to tighten up around the turns. Hopefully things will improve next time around being that we train at Avoncore and it's a familiar track." When asked about retiring after the World Cup season, Herbertson replied: "We'll see where I end up in the standings towards the end. I'd love to qualify for the Olympic team and there's a real chance that if I make it, that will be my last competition in skeleton.

Kizzy Meissner had a much improved day, finishing above the qualifying mark in her first run with a 53.05 and then having a very similar run in her next go around to land her a 9th place finish at the end of the day. "This is much more of what I know I'm capable of dong" Meissner said. " I know I should be qualifying at every competition and giving a push towards the top group every time. I'll only improve as the season continues."

The skeleton team will look to continue their strong start at their home training facility at Avoncore in Round 3.

Bobsleigh:
The 4-man teams of Nacaltora 1 & 2 will look to continue their growth towards the top when the bobsleigh competition begins tomorrow. For the women of Nacaltora 2, they will look to improve from their 8th place finish last time around. For the men, they hope that their team chemistry has improved enough that they no longer make costly mistakes that cost them. In the 2-man competition, driver Ingmar Isaacson spoke with the media in advance to tomorrow's competition, "Eugen and I have a real chance of landing in the top 5 in the two man and the season progresses. As for the 4-man, I've got to control the sled better and come out of turns smoother."
To follow the bobsleigh action tomorrow in Stevenson, Dunnes, stay tuned through Standard Digest.

Gary Stanton Hoping For Stronger Performance In Dunnes

Following an average showing in the first round of the inaugural Sliding World Cup, one half of Melbergia's premiere 2-person Bob team, Gary Stanton, has stated his disappointment at the duo's initial performance.

"We could have done better for sure. Greg [White] turned his ankle in training two days before unfortunately and I don't think it had fully healed. We can definitely go faster."

Elsewhere, Melbergia's A-squad for the four man Bob put in a stunning show to finish fastest after the initial two runs. Team Coach Harris Foster expressed some surprise at the result, but stated "these guys have worked hard for this and they deserve it. Hopefully we can continue in similar fashion".

Stevenson, Dunnes,

With West Phoenicia sending two 2 man Bobsled teams it was always going to be a war for supremacy.
Elaine Strutt / Kylie Strutt Vs Jayson Wellington / Lucas Heart had there second meet up today in Dunnes. After taking part in the Queen Juno Arena run Jayson Wellington / Lucas Heart found themselves in a healthy second place with the Strutt sisters sitting in 5th.

While in Dunnes, both teams had razor edge timings in run 1 with the Strutt sisters scrapping ahead by .3 of a second. The sisters were able to keep their lead going into the second run finishing up in 4th position with Wellington / Lucas sitting in 6th.

With both teams sitting in healthy spots at the moment with both teams they look forward to facing off with eachother again and fellow nations as both vie for number 1 spot.

From Disaster to Distinction
Four-man bobsled team takes first in Dunnes after disqualifying in West Phoenicia.

Image
The crew of Nacaltora 1 begins their second run in the second round of the Sliding World Cup.

There were many questions facing the members of Nacaltora 1 after their disastrous debut in West Phoenicia that saw them crash not once, but twice. At the time, driver Ingmar Isaacson took the fault and was quoted in saying "I just need to do better. There's really no explanation for it." As the saying goes, "There's only one way to go, and that's up." No one thought though, that a team who could not finish a run on their blades could turn things around and end up winning the next round of competition in Dunnes. The members of Nacaltora 1 did just that, the remarkable. From the start, observers could notice something different. The first run was smooth. The team was in rhythm and it was clear to see. After the first run, the team sat in 2nd place with a time of 51.70 sitting only behind Mattijana 1 who also had a surprising first run. "We had confidence entering into that first run and knew after the results came in that we were in striking distance of the podium, and that's all we really cared about" pushman, Heino Van As said. "I felt more comfortable than I have in a while during that first run" driver Ingmar Isaacson said. "We just knew we were capable of pulling off something special after the run we had to start things off." The second run was very similar. The team looked fluid upon entrance into the sled and Isaacson's driving picked up from there, earning the team a time of 51.78 which by the end of the 2nd run was good enough for first place. "We were emotional a bit" brakeman, Eugen Holst said. "The swing of emotions we've had over the last week has been pretty wild." Pushman, Salomon Daelmans wrapped up everyone's emotions in the group's post-race interview: "To think that we've just had our best run as a group and now we get to head home to Avoncore where we train and where we are so comfortable, it's just an incredible feeling."

Image
Nacaltora 1 driver, Ingmar Isaacson celebrates after first run.

After the incredible performance of Nacaltora 1 dominating the talk from Stevenson, it would seem that the women of Nacaltora 2 were nothing but average. That is far from accurate. The team of Eva Winter, Lauren Geiger, Petronela Brittain and Leona Rademaker finished their first run in a disappointing 12th place with a time of 52.39. "We knew we could do a lot better than that and just needed a spark. To be honest, we saw the guys have an unreal run after their disappointment last time and we said if they can do it, we can too" driver, Eva Winter said." The second run was not only better than their first, it was the fastest time recorded on the track all day. Nacaltora 2 came across the finish with a time of 51.35. "We were thrilled" pushman Lauren Geiger said. "It's been a really historic day for Nacaltora bobsledding and we can't wait to compete at home."

The two-man competition produced much more average results for the Nacaltorans. Ingemar Isaacson and Eugen Holst finished with times of 52.41 and 52.18, good for 8th place. Filippa Gottschalk and Eva Winter finished in 11th with times of 52.17 and 52.52.

The bobsledders, just like their luge and skeleton counterparts will come back to Nacaltora for the next round of the Sliding World Cup to be held in Avoncore at the Avoncore Sliding Centre. To follow all the action from the Sliding World Cup, including the last day of competition from Stevenson, stay tuned to The Standard Register.

"Dom Toglani, with you here on the NETV Sports 19 Update, Neu Engollon and our International viewers. We're following the NS Sliding World Cup, which has gone through stages in West Phoenicia and now Dunnes.
Opening day in Queen Juno Stadium saw some of our athletes crack into the top 20. Even though higher hopes were to be had, it seems that success in Teremaran regional tournaments does not equal success with the greater international field. There was talk that the Austrakians, Glisandians, Falkasians and Yellowsians might all send teams to the NS Sliding World Cup, but they didn't...And it's likely that they would have not done much better, if not quite worse, if we look at how the various Teremaran sliding athletes stack up.
In any case, that's a tangent for another time as there aren't any other Teremaran teams currently in the Cup.

In the two person sled runs, our teams were at the bottom of the heat, while our 4 person womens and mens teams disqualified out of the running. For luge, other than Anto Torsiglio, we saw similar results. Torsiglio finished 14th. In the doubles, Torsiglio was partnered Amalia Voerner, they managed to get the 12th spot at Queen Juno. In luge relay, the Neu Engollian team placed last.
One bright spot is the women's team for 4 person bob, despite their lackluster finishes, had taken 6th overall in the final standings from the West Phoenicia leg, whereas the rest of the competitors have ranked at the bottom, if not dead last. Overall, Neu Engollon was ranked 9 out of 10 out of the competing teams going into the Stevenson, Dunnes leg of the Cup.
Also, our solo skeleton sliders, Damaria Thibault and Roberto Cavazentia seem to be hanging in there with their respective packs...Look for them to improve.

I know how you're feeling out there, fellow Confederacy citizens, when it comes to watching this. This is the story of Neu Engollian athletics for the past couple years, some achievements, and initial successes, with the overall tanking when it comes to pulling it out for the final. We have seen this time and again in several sports and confidence in the Ministry of Athletics has been shaken since Jean-Marc Koepller took over the head Minister spot during the shift from the Alainsburg administration to the Garavano administration.

We all hope for better things when it comes to Neu Engollian sport, and sledding and sliding in particular. Stay tuned to NETV 19 Sports Update as we continue to cover the NS Sliding World Cup here in Stevenson, Dunnes. We'll be back with some athlete profiles right after this sponsor break..."

Back at the XII Winter Olympics Games the sliding events were near impossible for West Phoenicia to get a foot in. They excelled in Snowboarding, Skiing and Speed Skating events.
There was talk of the West Phoenician Winter Olympics Committee cutting funding to Luge, Skeleton and Bonsled and to allocate the money to sports where West Phoenicia had a chance of winning a medal.

The Sliding World Cup has shown that West Phoenicia does have some great athletes in these fields. If West Phoenicia can keep it up these sports they have a good chance of pulling in some medal wins.

The first stop in West Phoenicia had the Sliding athletes step up and make the nation proud on home turf.
The ongoing events in Dunnes show West Phoenicia is a nation to keep ones eyes on.

Jillian Pilliano in the Skeleton event continues to sit in a healthy position currently sitting in third position. A great run at the next venue will see Ms Pilliano push surpass Joey Tagart of the
Northwest Kalactin.

Julie Queen/ Julie Washington/Thomas Pilfer & Cain De Monti in the Luge relay had a terrific run placing first in Dunnes, While not a must watch sport in West Phoenicia the win has garnished interest in the media with the sports channels running the win during prime time.

Meanwhile Jayson Wellington/Lucas Heart and Elaine Strutt / Kylie Strutt hover in 2nd and 3rd position wiping the floor with the other nations.

Northwest Kalactin has a safe lead in the luge relay event so far and Joey tagart is catching up with dietmer peurA but he still leads by 7 points and a West Phoenicia Skeleton slider is coming up on Joey the 2 person bobsleighers are doing not great with are best competitor coming in 8th place 4 person is probably the worst one so far with the looks of it they will not do good Justin chambers is in a tight race in luge singles and is tied in 3rd place with lien nam of west Phoenicia and Jose lamb is not far behind in the luge singles race but Jack Wilson is struggling luge doubles is bad we are in 13th place and only have 12 points compared to the dunnes team 37 meanwhile in Northwest Kalactin they are creating a metro line between Azadeshia and Northwest Kalactin

WILL LUGE MARRY ME?

Heart-warming news from the icy Sliding World Cup as Melbergian athletes get hitched.

In a tournament that has so far given Melbergian sports fans little to cheer about, there is at least one cause for celebration. Luge stars Meik Blackburn and Kerry de Barra have announced their engagement.

"We've been together for four years," Blackburn explained, beaming, "I was getting pressure from my friends, now seemed as good a time as any".

Kerry de Barra explained that Blackburn made his proposal shortly after the pairs efforts in the Luge Singles competition in Dunnes.

"We'd both had a really disappointing afternoon, I think he was just trying to cheer me up."

The couple have stated that a date for their wedding has not yet been decided, however reassured Melbergian sliding enthusiasts that their attention was focused on the World Cup for now, and the Winter Olympics to come.

"This year has been fantastic so far," said Blackburn, "we'll finish up after the Olympics then start thinking about marriage. It's great to have it to look forward to."

WELCOME TO THE FROZEN NORTH

Image

HÁLSRATH|MELBERGIA

Situated in the snowy rural north-east of Melbergia, Hálsrath is the nation's second largest city area in terms of population, albeit somewhat isolated from the rest of the country. The Sliding Centre was constructed two years ago as part of an initiative to boost the area's economy and give Melbergian winter sports a greater standing both domestically and on the global stage.

Although the modern facilities suggest otherwise, this is an old land. The ancient clans of Melbergia lived here, and contemporary, provincial Melbergians living in the Hálsrath area consider themselves the current day heirs to the clans' fiercely independent legacy. Visitors from the cosmopolitan capital, Portvestir, are likely to be treated with mild distrust from true locals - as indeed are the many foreigners visiting for the next round of the Sliding World Cup.

Despite this, the coming of the Sliding World Cup to Melbergia has been highly anticipated, causing much excitement locally. Melbergian team performances so far have been lukewarm; the locals are hoping that strong and vocal support might lead to improvement.

The Hálsrath Sliding Centre presents one of the World Cup's quicker and less technical tracks. This artificial track's hard ice and average grade of 11.4% will lead to fractions of seconds being the difference here; small mistakes will be punished severely.

The Mattijana Skeleton and Bobsled association and the Mattijana Luge Federation have this afternoon named their teams for the Winter Olympics in Prescott, Electrum. All their participants in the sliding world cup are in the side, as are a number of fresh faces from the domestic sliding scene.

Mattias Burgisijo is the poster boy of the sliding squad and the nation's top skeleton athlete currently sits 5th in the skeleton standings. Louisa Aspelov is 14th and makes the squad on the women's side, alongside 17th placed Ameli Maurizia. Julia Loelling will make a much anticipated return from a calf injury at the games, taking up the third women's slot. Dominik Harzmann and Martin Klammarovic complete the mens lineup with the former keen to get back in the international fold.
"To miss out on selection for the World Cup was a dissapointment, so it's great to see that I've impressed the selectors this season. I'm really looking forward to getting back out on the ice and the Presscott track is one that I really love sliding at, so all in all, it's great to have the opportunity to be back", said Harzmann after the team was unveiled at the Hollesbirjke today.

Mattijana's Bobsled team will also be keen to pick up some medals in Prescott. Dan Ljusan and Matej Dimitrov are the favourites to do that after their bronze last time out and currently sit 5th in the World Cup standings, whilst Katarina Malekova and Kara Velezia also return. Dimitri Čekov and Alex Sonijo join the squad as second sled on the men's side, whilst Louisa Simonova and Natalia Wimmer may also fancy their chances in Prescott after a 5th placed finish at the last games.

The two 4-person teams will also be hopeful of success. The men, formed of driver Petre Lamja, Dominik Handlos, Martin Hintero and Marko Ritzmaeler, won bronze last time and will be keen to improve. They are joined at the top by the team of Fedor Marelika, Ulin Višnov, Julian Shultz and Niko Shudinov who will want to make amends after crashing out at the last games.
The women's team that sit joint 10th in the World Cup standings are Kara Makar, Julia Ivanovic, Sophia Velezia and Claudia Velezia. Pilot Kara Makar will be keen to improve on a 9th placed finish in Prescott.

Mattijana's first ever international winner Izara Alina once again returns after an impressive few results in the world Cup including victory in West Phoenicia. The poster girl crashed out in the third heat of the last Olympics, but as one of the world's best, she knows she has the skill and power to place very highly indeed. Jasmin Tallinski is the Mattijanan number 2 on the women's side, having taken Mattijana's best result of the previous olympics in 11th.
Halzo Razmov has been short of form this season following his 32nd at the 12th Winter games, but makes the cut for number 13. Matej Zadinov and Mikal Dinestic also make the team on the men's side whilst Domika Ljudinov is the third women's sled, but barring Alina and maybe an outside effort from Tallinski, the skeleton and bobsled is the main hope from the singles perspective.

Despite that, Mattijana have managed to assemble a handy relay side of Razmov, Alina and doubles pair Finna Kolinov and Sofia Hetzcota. The team were 7th in their debut event in Prescott and will be looking to get onto the podium this time around.

In addition to the increasingly succesful Alpine Skiing team and long term table-toppers in the curling, Mattijana's sliders will be the ones most likely to win big in Prescott and expectation is high. The sliding world cup is a good chance to gain some experience and some form ahead of the sport's biggest stage.
The socialist republic of Mattijana:
As if Austria, Slovenia, North-Eastern Europe and Sweden were merged together into some weird stew of a country.
through resilience, we are strong!
