Ragnar Johansson Trophy (Ice Hockey) - IC + Result Thread

Postby Savojarna » Tue Dec 12, 2017 7:24 am

Savojarna proudly presents

Image

So, I realised that 1) I will have some time over Christmas and New Year's, 2) I really love hockey and would like to RP my club hockey teams a bit more, but am not super motivated to do so in my newswire and 3) I really enjoy hosting tournaments! So here's a small thing to keep you hockey-fans alive through the downtime before the next international hockey cycle!

What is this thing?

The Ragnar Johansson Trophy, named after a Sjoedrhavener hockey legend from the 50's who led Dynamo to seven championship titles in twelve years, is a small tournament unaffiliated with any major hockey competition. It is entirely hosted in the Sjoedrhavns Stadsstadion, and it has space for 6/8 (depending on demand) teams. OOC the spots are given out first come, first serve, but IC the tournament is an invitational for club teams comparable to the Spengler Cup. The tournament will prospectively take place in the last week of the year and, if necessary, the first week of the new year. The mode will look like the following:

- with six teams, we copy the Spengler Cup: two groups of three, the winners qualify for the semifinals while the 2nd and 3rd teams play partial quarters.
- with eight teams, two groups of four with the top 2 of each group progressing to semifinals.
- Scorination: xkoranate Ice Hockey with Saintland Modifiers (neutral ground); additive Style Mods from -5 to +5, up to three digits.
- Scoring: IIHF Three-Point-Rule (as in the latest WCoH hosted by Savojarna) aka 3 points for regulation victory, 2 for OT/SO victory, 1 for OT/SO loss, 0 for regulation loss
- RP Bonus/Ranks: Ranks will be set to 0 for all teams at the beginning. RP bonus will be cumulative and, as always, quality over quantity.

Invited teams:
1. Dynamo Sjoedrhavn (SVJ)
2. ESK Storevik (SVJ)
3. Yeaddin HC (V&T)
4. Occhenford and New Anderlecht (NDO)
5. Armidale Chargers (NKO)
6. Team Esparmuran (ESP)*
7. Austervåg Norsemen (BJO)
8. Zoloroni City Icers (MRC)

*: Team Esparmuran is allowed into the competition after consultation with me through TG because Esparmuran's population is too small to sustain a hockey league, therefore it does not have club teams; but the RJT Organisation Comittee decided to make an exception to have another high-quality team competing in the tournament.

Group Draw
(to be drawn soon)

With Savojarna's permission granted, Esparmuran will send its national team (with a marginally downgraded roster to avoid having an unfair advantage) to the Ragnar Johansson invitational.

Team: University of Moravica Men's Ice Hockey
League: The Banijan Collegiate Sports Group(our version of the NCAA), out of 60 member schools, only have 6 sponsor hockey at the varsity level. There is no professional hockey league in Banija due to its lack of popularity(and, of course, the lack of winter within Banija). The University of Moravica is the defending national champion out of these six schools(Univeristy of Moravica, Northern Moravica University, University of Loyola-Istria, Wild Valley University, Istria City College, and the Islamic University of Busoga).

Wow, that filled up quickly! I apologise to Banija, but unfortunately, I would like to not extend the RJT beyond eight teams for IC reasons, which are already filled up by your predecessors. I hope this is okay to you, and there is (very likely) going to be a next time! According to the policy outlined in the OP, Dynamo Shebchetsik, Jossingdalen Alecto and Morata Valley Fog are not going to be invited. However, if you guys want to switch your registered team for your rejected one, just tell me as soon as possible.

The tournament will start after Christmas, in this very thread, but you can technically start writing RP and/or rosters now, if you wish.

Cool, hope to see you there! Also, you'll still get to see Auguste Chausson wear the Dynamo Sjoedrhavn colours :) (and if you really want to further Banijan hockey culture between the WCoH seasons, you could of course still take part as a third party, or from Auguste's POV - but I wouldn't really expect such dedication from a non-participating nation ^^)

Yeah, for such a small tournament it hardly makes sense to create a new thread...

Ragnar Johansson Trophy
TEAM ESPARMURAN
Style modifier: +4.05

Esparmuran is a medium sized, sparsely-populated freezing wasteland. Snow and ice cover the country 24/7, so one of the only outdoor recreational activities one can do in such almost-inhospitable weather is ice hockey.

The Espar National Ice Hockey Team has competed in the World Cup of Hockey eleven times and has seen varying success. Despite making the finals in their fourth year, the team has been through a rough patch lately, from being eliminated in the most recent Round of 16 to those who were never expected to get out of the group stage to begin with in Banija, to not even making the Ro16 three years ago. It's a situation that has only gotten worse since the Espar Recreational Community, the sports company that owns the national team, has been exploring any way possible to save on funds, even if it means disbanding the team altogether. Those on the team know their final days together in the WCoH could be nearing, so they've been recently looking for any chance they can get to play on the international level, WCoH or not, and being invited to the Ragnar Johansson Cup in Savojarna is a huge deal for the now crumbling team. Many on the WCoH roster are not participating in the Invitational as they are busy playing for teams in the Kingdom of the Polar Bear, Ontorisa and Neu Engollon. While some veterans like Haven Clausen, Paul Lauritsen and Wolf Paige have come to lead the charge, others like Bailey Royston, Blaine Blackwood and Gregers Østergaard have decided to not play to free up the roster for the more younger players, so the roster for now mostly consists of those on the Junior team who have not currently made it on to the senior squad.

Population: 1201
Demonym: Espar
Trigram: ESP
Owner: Espar Recreational Community
non-WCOH Record: 1-0-0
General Manager: Savannah Spurling
Head Coach: Thiemo Arsen
Esparmuran has no real nickname for its team. "Team Esparmuran" is being used as shorthand for the team here and has been used before occasionally, but it's never been official.
Also, because of Esparmuran's tiny population, expect only 10 or so Espar fans in the stands. That said, don't kill any of them.
Image
The ERC has released its new jerseys for
the tournament. Blue has been introduced
into the Espar kit for the first time
(excluding the West Esparmuran flag patch
on the current WCoH uniforms). The logo
and jerseys were designed by Espar artist
Hjørdis Karstensen.

amount of ads on them for a more
realistic experience)

SavojarSports.sj - inside reports from all Savojarna
Dynamo Sjoedrhan's RJT roster is released

Dynamo is the team of the Savojar Police, and traditionally all Dynamo players are still police officers, which explains why the team always has a patch of the Savojar police on their arm or shoulder. They are one of the oldest and most successful teams in the country, not the least thanks to Ragnar Johansson, who was the namesake for this tournament. Dynamo has a bunch of very livid fans in all of Savojarna, but their main fanbase is in the suburbs of the city. Sjoedrhavn itself tends to be more on the SHK side, as the team is historically more rooted in the city center. Within the city, Dynamo is said to only be the number three behind SHK and Akademisk HK, but this doesn't mean that the stadium isn't full for their home games. Recently, Dynamo has been rather unlucky. in the first SHS season, the team dominated the regular season but lost the first playoff series against HK Metall Jarnstad 1-4. They took revenge on HKM in the latest playoffs with the same result, but then lost to RHK Savojagrad in the quarterfinals. The team is highly tactical and very good in terms of fitness, and their biggest strength is to control a game and suffocate their opposition.

Goalkeeper order: Malmström - Suhonen - Fridman, unless indicated otherwise.

Special Teams:
The powerplay is notorious for cycling the puck for a very long time. They often try to pass the puck through the slot, and failing that, they also like to take shots from the blue line, which they then try to push into the goal. Dynamo's PK is relatively passive, relying on good positioning and trying to push the opposition to the boards.

Style codes:
HYB = Hybrid goaltender. Uses a sensible mixture of butterfly and standup styles. Average likelihood of rebounds.
BFY = Butterfly goaltender. Quickly drops into butterfly stance to make saves. Will concede more rebounds, but is harder to beat low.
DFD = Defensive defender. Sticks to the blue line and works a lot in backchecking. Blocks shots, checks and is hard to get past.
TWD = Two-way defender. Dangerous from the point and the top of the circle, but focuses on backchecking. Also good at breakouts.
OFD = Offensive defender. Usually a good shooter and passer, and will more frequently move deep in offensive play. Still is a defender though.
TWA = Two-way attacker. A forward who will be quick to fall back if the team loses the puck, and prevents odd-man rush opportunities.
PWF = Power forward. A forward who plays with strength in everything he does, but also relies on skill. The most allround forwards on the team.
SNP = Sniper. A forward who will score more goals than assists. His job is simply to put the puck in the back of the net from every position.
PLM = Playmaker. A forward who has good overview and passing, and will score more assists than goals. His job is to create chances for the team.
GRN = Grinder. A forward using his body to annoy the opponent, get or keep the puck and push it into the goal. Especially good at forechecking.

You are free to do whatever you want as long as you do not:
    - violate the rules of physics or reality. Godmodding in the sense of unusual but possible events is fine, godmodding impossible things is not. As a guideline, if it has never happened in a RL hockey match, don't do it (or TG me first at least).
    - Kill any Savojars, including spectators and journalists etc.
    - Injure any player for more than until the next WCoH, or in a way that heavily affects me. As a rule of thumb, if you take out a 1st or 2nd liner, or if you take out more than one player, TG me first. If you injure them for more than the tournament, I will allow myself to shorten the injury for domestic purposes.
    - Allow me to do the same thing to you that you do to me.

A note regarding fights in the streets or stadia: Savojars are a proud people that highly values warriors and fighting as a sign of strength and pride. We do also feel a strong sense of justice towards our own kind. Attacking Savojars will be a quick way to be surrounded by a bunch of their friends, or even complete strangers who happen to be countrymen. Also, while they may be on the lookout for a fight, if you obviously decline it and walk away, nobody will actually attack you. Attacking an opponent who either declines, does not expect or conceded a fight is seen as the lowest of the low in Savojarna, and only done by spineless cowards.
A note regarding international incident or cooperative RP: I am very inclined to do cooperative RP and also gladly outside the hockey world, be that diplomacy, trade or war. However, I'd like to ask you to TG me with your proposed storyline. If you do not do this, or I declined the storyline for some reason, and you carry it out anyway, I will consider your RP useless propaganda and not accept it as Savojar canon. Icers To Debut In Ragnar Johansson Trophy
@ Sjoedrhavn, Savojarna

Following their title victory in the Mercedinian Super League and subsequent qualification towards the Hockey Champion's League, the club took no time in submitting an application for the inaugural tournament for the Ragnar Johansson Trophy. That application was accepted and now Mercedini's capital club has now set their base in Sjoedrhavn to gain precious international experience before the team set off on yet another campaign for the MSL.

Due to the current size and stature of the tournament, the Icers will send a smaller roster compared to most of the other teams, however they will send a full strength squad to the tournament to put Mercedinian Hockey on the map as well as add another potential trophy to the Icers' cabinet. While there are plenty of sporting events which are currently being held inside and outside of Mercedini's borders, the Icers hope to slip under the radar and capture a trophy which would round of an excellent year for Mercedinian sport.

Godmod scoring events: Yes
Injuries to my players: Yes
Godmod injuries to my players: No
Hand out penalties to my players: Yes
Hand out suspensions to my players: No
Godmod other events: Yes

SavojarSports.sj - inside reports from all Savojarna
ESK Storevik's RJT roster is released

Supported by the regional government of Ejana, ESK Storevik (ESK stands for Ejanske Sports Klub) started out as a way to provide a sports home for those inhabitants of Ejana that were not affiliated with one of the big unions. Over time, ambitious heads of the ESK project used their political power to draw people away from their union clubs to join the regional power, so that ESK became a regional selection team in the 1950s. From this time comes the big identification and massive fanbase of ESK in the region, especially when they play Admiral Storevik, a team sponsored by the Navy that had always been seen as an imposition by the central government in Sjoedrhavn. In its long history, ESK has always been a force to reckon with, but they were no cup competitors for a long time. This all changed with the SHS, when the government of Ejana took some money in its hands and finally, in SHS 3, got its payoff with a title. Since then, most of the team stayed together. ESK is famous for its quick attack and its physicality in defence, as well as its speed, given the young nature of the team.

Goalkeeper order: Davidsson - Antonov - Novanen, unless indicated otherwise.

Special Teams:
ESK's powerplay employs an umbrella formation, trying to get a lot of shots from the blue line or the sides in and pushing them over the line. Against strong opponents, they like to search for cross-crease opportunities and try to tip it in from the side. With one man down, ESK typically employs a relatively tight box with three men and tries to snatch up the puck with the fourth, launching into quick counters that can occasionally lead to shorthanders if given the opportunity.

Norsemen get off to great start in Tourney
The Austervåg Norsemen, of the Bjørnøya Superleague, kicked off their quest to win the Ragnar Johansson Trophy by defeating the Zoloroni City Icers in an action-packed 3-2 game. The Norsemen took an early lead with a goal scored by defenseman Anders Larvesson (#11) 7 minutes into the 1st period. Larvesson was assisted by right winger Grekov Danilovich (#19.) The Norsemen center Dumanovsky Yanovich (#9) scored again, unassisted, with 37 seconds left in the 1st. The Icers dominated the 2nd period, scoring two goals. With 6 minutes remaining in regulation, Norsemen right winger Grekov Danilovich scored on a penalty shot to win the game. Goalkeeper Vladimir Artemovich (#53) stopped 34 of 36 shots.

Well our next game is against Occhenford and new anderletch from new doltania who just beat the hosts 6-3 so I imagine they are good but I have a feeling we are better so yeah we need our whole team to step up our defense will need to play better for our goalie Clint bowers so you want me to tell you why I chose the Armidale chargers well I will give you many good reasons

1. They have the most national team players on their team in the NKHL (5 players Clint bowers, Todd Washington, Jason sanders, Joey McCullough and bobby Bryant)

2. They are 3rd in the NKHL

3. They are going to play in HCL

4. Jay Zhangi and Justin mills are Coaches on the national team

Espars get small revenge on Chausson w/ win over Sjoedrhavn
5.50 k.
National Herald/nationale Herolden - A Commonwealth of Crowns Herald Affiliate

Olaf Skovgaard
Sjoedrhavn, Savojarna

Yesterday, the newly named Team Esparmuran took to the ice in the Ragnar Johansson Trophy against Savojarna's own Dynamo Sjoedrhavn. Nobody was quite sure what to think of the Espar team, as a large majority of the WCoH team was absent, and filling their place were numerous players on the WJHC roster, along with some hopefuls who had no international experience at all. Expectations back home were mixed, but the ragtag group of Espars proved their doubters wrong, at least for now, as they managed to beat Sjoedrhavn 3-4 in a hard fought contest.

One player many on the Espar squad were wary of was Sjoedrhavn's Auguste Chausson, the 25 year old Banijan who contributed to Esparmuran's humiliating loss against his native country in the most recent World Cup of Hockey. It became more and more apparent throughout the game the squad, despite the majority not being present in the loss, were still focused on bringing Chausson out of his comfort zone.

The game started off huge for Sjoedrhavn, as left-winger Pekka Evanen would score an incredible backhand shot just a minute in. Evanen managed to get the shot off the back of his stick after being shoved by Espar captain Haven Clausen away from the net, but in doing so he was able to spin back around and knock the puck in. Despite the monumental goal, the Espars were keen on cutting off Sjoedrhavn's momentum. Eight minutes later, Team Esparmuran would reply with a rebound goal from 18-year-old Jacob Dam, which would finish the scoring for the first period.

Halfway through the second, Sjoedrhavn's Mirkko Livonen would score from the slot to make it 2-1, with an assist from Auguste Chausson. At this point, Chausson had already received his fair share of hits and shoves, but nothing could compare to a huge hit by Torben Jokumsen onto Chausson shortly after Livonen's goal. Chausson didn't look hurt, but the hit caused a scrum of Sjoedrhavn players to shove Jokumsen, which in turn made the Espars respond in kind. After the officials separated the two groups, they handed over roughing calls to Mikhail Arkovich and Darren Ryley.

Espar center Paul Lauritsen would score during the 4-on-4, and Joakim Raske would make it 3-2, giving Team Esparmuran the lead for the first time in the game just before the second period ended. Chausson himself had a chance to equalize the score in the final moments if not for a great sprawling save by Wolf Paige.

In the third, Jonas Mortensen would score the last goal for Esparmuran, which would be followed by Sjoedrhavn's last goal by Kirill Nurchenko. The Espars would hold onto the lead throughout the period. They face Mercedini's Zoloroni City Icers tomorrow.

So, surprisingly to some, Team Esparmuran wins against Dynamo Sjoedrhavn. The team isn't exactly WCoH material right now, but considering the win against a team most would likely favour, it looks as though the squad will, at the very least, put up quite a big fight against the rest of their opposition. Bring on the Icers!
