OOC: Continued from this RP.

Battlefields come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Maltecco was no different. Situated a short distance north of the megacity of Aspel, it had become more than just a frontline urban centre with densely packed streets, but also an important pressure point for the Sameban's to flood with disposable troops every time the Euran Army threatened to break through on open ground. The Euran helicopters came in low and fast, rattling the buildings beneath them as they swooped in on the city centre. In a house under their flight path, two Sameban Republican Army officers (a signals Major and the besieged Colonel allegedly in charge of the city centre) were shaken physically by the fleet of choppers passing overhead. One of their youngest men, more like a boy really, ran in with a rifle longer than he was slung over his back. 'Comrade Colonel, they're here! It was like you said it might be, usual formation, little ones in front and big ones in back!' The Sameban Colonel took a moment to accept this was the day he would probably have to die. His chum from Signals had much too big a grin on his face for such a moment. 'Major, a bit of respect before we go into battle please.'
'Sorry! Yes. I'm excited to fight Colonel.' The more senior man muttered words to the effect of "you're a fool" and went on his way. Their plan was set. Compress the landing enemies, try to shoot down helicopters, split them up into small groups and go in for the kill. Do this before they called further air support and don't let them penetrate the docks. Repelling the enemy would mean success. If they failed, no dignified Republican Army officer would allow themselves to be taken alive.

Riding on a black metal horse sounds impressive but it doesn't make you feel all that much safer when you're scared shitless. Amelia had stopped thinking of home, or the seagulls she could see fluttering about outside occasionally, or really anything that could help her get away mentally from this death wish. Everything was too much. It didn't help that the bloody pilots left their radios on so everyone in the back could hear the level of shit about to be flung at them. They were weirdly casual about the whole thing too, like they did it every day. 'Shit Mike, we're getting small arms to the right.'
'No lad that's an MG.'
'You think?'
'What else?' Loud clapping shook the helicopter. 'Fuck, alright. Matty, spin her up!' Amelia's hearing was preserved by her earplugs as the door gunner on the right side held down the trigger on his minigun following a few seconds of deliberation looking for the target. 'Matty!' More gunfire. 'Matty, mate!'
'Wasted them boss.'
'Good lad.' Amelia stared at Orson in disbelief. 'They're fucking kidding right?'
'What?'
'I said they're fucking kidding right?' Orson clearly couldn't hear her still. 'Never mind.' She hoped that wasn't the last conversation they had.

The co-pilot gave a thumbs up through the small gap that connected the cabin and back section. 'Thirty seconds Charlie Two, its going to get hot down there! Lovely stuff!' If she got out of this alive, Amelia would make sure to choke that pilot within an inch of his life. Seconds continued to tick away and she continued to shake like a somehow armoured leaf. Marion, that Corporal, she didn't give a fuck. Sat in the corner, chewing gum next to the Crew Chief. Gunfire could be heard in the background over squad radios - the Euran special forces operators were already on the ground and blasting their way through the primary target buildings. The Falcon pitched up and slowed abruptly, throwing Amelia off balance slightly. 'Here we go, don't hesitate on the ropes!' Lieutenant Desmond issued his reminder as he himself prepared to go out as he was going to be first out of the bird. It was the Nepharim way traditionally. Officers both high and low were expected to lead the way although it hadn't been official policy for many decades. Amelia didn't take the creed so seriously, because when it came down to it the foot soldiers like her were the ones putting themselves in harms way most of the time. The doors slid open. Ropes spiraled out to a much greater length than normal to permit for the helicopter keeping just clear of the buildings on either side of the street. Desmond went down followed by Marion, there's two guys going down the other side, Orson next, another lass down the other rope and Amelia stopped counting there because she was flying down a tightly bound bit of rope like an absolute maniac.

Don't clamp the rope with your feet they tell you, boot oil makes it too slippery for whoever is coming behind you. Don't get within three metres of the next soldier down. Amelia screwed up both of those things pretty much straight away. She slipped two metres from the ground and bundled over Orson as he tried to get away. Her instincts set in after a few moments of shock. Get up! She had dropped her rifle which wasn't the worst of her problems. Frequently accused of not paying enough attention to briefings, Amelia was sure as anything that she was about to prove her doubters wrong here. 'Wrong drop spot!' Desmond spun around looking stunned like a deer in headlights. 'Fucking what?!'
'Wrong drop spot Urban, I swear.'
'That's Lieutenant to you!'
'Fuck off!' She'd never hear the end of that bit of dissidence, this Participation Medal winning wanker of an officer was so by the book he should write his own novel. He had gone first though. Couldn't fault the spirit of Nephara's heroes past, present and future running through his very being on those grounds. There was no time to think though. The dust was completely unexpected in its ferocity as the Falcon pulled away above with everyone deployed. 'Orson, count!'
'Nine out sir!'
'Nine?' That number was wrong. Ten were in the helicopter. Amelia and the others scanned around, conscious that there was very audible heavy gunfire coming from nearby which inevitably had to come their way soon.

Private Boyle had bought it more or less the way he feared. Being more accurate, that would become true if he didn't get serious medical attention five minutes ago. Boyle writhed about, a figurative fish out of the water in this foreign land, a massive gash splitting his side open from hip to below the right armpit. 'Boyle's hit, fuck, cover me!' That medic - what was her name, Amelia could never remember - sprinted while screaming the instruction across the ten metre gap separating Boyle's squirming body from the rest of the squad. He was moving about a lot which was good. What was bad was the lack of screaming or noise. Dying men are too often quiet before they go. Desmond was torn between his genuine desire to protect the team and his understandable reluctance to put the mission on ice half a minute in to the action. He had no choice but to call it in. 'Charlie Two to, urm, shit, Marion, Euraspeak for home?'
'Baseplate?'
'No, only Navy do that, or countries like Cosumar, what do they use? Help me here!' Nobody could really believe what was going on here. It was surreal. Thankfully Orson popped up at the crucial moment. 'Crease!'
'Crease, good man mate, fuck me! Charlie Two to Crease, I have a man down, requesting medevac.' Fat chance the Euran's would send a helicopter back into this mess that quickly.

Chaos aside, Amelia couldn't really help but notice they hadn't been shot at yet. How was Boyle wounded? The medic worked it out pretty sharpish. 'He's landed on a bloody car door.' Desmond was crouched over the kid trying to work out what cruel unwritten rule of the universe had decided to fuck over Boyle today. 'That's not possible.'
'It is, look at it, right here. The tarmac's torn up for a few hundred metres both way, look.' She pointed up and down the long street in each direction. 'From the bombing. There must be loads of bits of rubble under all this dust and churn and sand, damnit. Lieutenant if we don't get him out of here he's fucking gone bung.' No plan could really account for a car door that wasn't spotted under the whirling matrix thrown up by a hovering helicopter or that Boyle would lose his footing and land hard on his side right on a long metal edge without a rubber lining. 'All right, to hell with this. Let's get him out then keep going if we can. Anyone know how far we are from where we were supposed to be?' Amelia knew they were in the wrong place but only by seeing it wasn't the same as the right place. 'No-one?' Silence. 'Fucking hopeless, great. The lot of you on your feet now!' Orson stayed prone facing down the street one way at a crowd of men assembling behind two cars in the street fifty metres away. 'A dozen contacts that way sir. I hear a hiss I swear.'
'A hiss?'
'I read in basic a hissing sound means there's bullets passing close, but if you hear a snap that means they're hitting by you. We're being shot at.'
'Nice story mate, get up before I hit you so we can move!' Amelia took the random decision to go with Orson's hunch and drop to the floor against orders.

The Lieutenant was about to give Amelia a verbal bollocking when he was thrown onto his back with a puff of dust. 'They're definitely fucking shooting at us!' Orson squeezed the trigger on his light machine gun and the men dispersed. All hell broke loose within moments. An RPG zipped by and blew out a small shopfront directly behind Amelia and Marion. Glass fragments showered them in a deadly hail. Marion screamed every expletive under the sun but came away unwounded. Amelia felt something hot pass by her leg but ignored it, adrenaline driving her to move into a crouched position and slide behind a street freezer for an adjacent abandoned restaurant, dragging Desmond with her. Her worst nightmare was coming true. Sameban militia with supporting conscripts and probably a few marksmen were attacking from three directions along three streets. Gunmen were gathering on the roofs of the buildings surrounding the junction. Marion took charge with Desmond either dead or knocked out. 'Alright squad, this can't get any worse so keep your head down, let's see out the next minute, then lay down some cover fire! How should we do this?' It was a rhetorical question spoken out loud as she looked around and decided in a few seconds who of the eight standing members of the team would shoot in which direction. She started calling out orders when a corrugated iron panel from the restaurant flickered as a straddling run of bullets sprayed along it and the nearby soil in her direction. Another Private, Brae, chose the wrong moment to try and jog across the street and did a sort of strange shriek as her foot gave way under her thanks to the force of a high calibre bullet shattering everything below the ankle. 'No fucking way!' Marion saw exactly what happened and that the shots had come from an eleven storey building towering over everything, a hundred and fifty metres down one of the forking roads.

Five minutes passed like a days of agonising torture. Their time pinned down in this position turned into hours and so it steadily became a greater misery. None of the squad could move their heads an inch for fear of losing it to a stray round. Local civil defence militia were lightly armed and often without uniforms but they were canny and knew their home field advantage counted for a lot. They persuaded the SRA conscripts with them to risk peeking over the balconies of buildings above to fire in bursts down at the Nepharim squad from as little as five or ten metres away. It was nothing short of a miracle that there were still half the squad left able bodied once Brae was chopped up by finishing shots in the middle of the street and Lance Corporal Sheridan's got spread against the side of the wrecked shop interior. Desmond woke up in a manner not dissimilar to a drunk waking from another failed attempt at getting through the night sober. 'Where we at Marion?'
'Urban you wanker get down!' She flattened her superior with a crushing elbow that probably made his sore chest worse than it had to be. 'Bitch!'
'Thank me later sir.' She fired two shots with her rifle and a poor bastard in the crosshairs twenty metres away, using a salt bin as cover, slumped over. 'Seven!'
'I told you not to count kills you savage.'
'Remember they will be counting us, Des!' Amelia was crawled up next to where Desmond was lying with her rifle jammed through a small gap, between the outdoor fridge and an overturned table that had proven to be far better cover than she could have anticipated. 'Private tell me who is dead and you can have Marion's job.'
'Seb Sheridan, Brae Hammond, Mick Boyle. You too we thought.' The Lieutenant reacted with a serene nod but broke the illusion of calm right after by vomiting at her feet.

Teary eyed survivors of near death experiences on those nauseating "true life" documentaries don't do situations of this type justice. Amelia didn't feel that way at least and she hated it more so when religious belief got the credit for their survival. She had never seen them admit they were bricking it the whole time or hoped in the moment that their mates got killed first. This whole scandalous affair was pure unadulterated chaos. There was no all seeing deity deciding fates and handing out a fair treatment. No-one who made it out of this was going to go on the small screen claiming divine intervention had spared them of a premature end. Surviving this ordeal was getting tenser by the minute and her mind kept wandering off into similarly end of the line orientated thought processes. The volume of incoming decreased as time went on and the battle unfolded around them, or so they thought. Lieutenant Desmond soon learned that the cause of this reprieve was that the epicentre of nearby combat had shifted four or five blocks eastwards. Nephara's stranded platoon were now a lost platoon. Amelia couldn't hold it together through another round of shitstorm in the vein of the last. Barely any of this squad could keep going, not least because the ammunition was try, let alone the three killed in action. Help arrived in time but way too late for her unlucky squad mates. The chopper came back. Desmond was helped with running by Marion as he led them one block east under moderate fire, carrying the dead one by one down a couple of alleyways and down the middle of a burnt out nightclub. Apart from a close call with two booby traps they made it intact.

Earlier that day Amelia wanted to knock out that smug Euran pilot but right now she could kiss him. The square they had moved to was big and the Falcon was able to descend and pick them up as soon as they had cleared some power lines using some inappropriately applied breaching charges. Marion was suspicious of the situation. 'This is easy. Too easy, you getting me Cleves?'
'I get you. Where did they all go?' Orson was staring at Boyle's corpse. Desmond was wandering around more akin to a lost lamb than an officer of Nephara's armed forces. The helicopter approached low with a gunshop not far behind surveying the surrounding area. 'Thank fuck!' No one in particularly said that yet they might as well have been, because everyone thought it, and the squad members rushed to board as soon as it touched down. The pilot was noticeably quieter than earlier offering only a respectful nod and a toned down one liner. 'Time to get out of this special holiday spot I gather.' Both the Crew Chief and other door gunner helped cover up the three dead although Sheridan's mangled state presented a bit of a challenge. Lifting off didn't relieve the tension in Amelia's mind which Orson was reading again. 'We have to go back out there don't we?'
'Not today if they don't want me going runabout.' Maltecco burned below them and not a single member of the squad wanted to gaze upon the morass of violence still enveloping thousands of people below. Amelia closed her eyes and tried to pretend she wasn't there anymore. She was going home in one place regardless of what happened in another. Suppression didn't help with anxiety she'd read but fuck it, it was worth trying anyway.

A thump rocked the entire aircraft. 'Orson?' He was knocked out of his daze by Amelia's reaction. She watched as he poked his head out of the slightly ajar door and went white. 'Pilot, we're fucking hit!'
'We're not amateurs, I know we've been damn well hit!' The co-pilot had been less jovial than his partner earlier, not much had changed. Each member of the squad held on to something nervously and tensed up waiting for any kind of explosion or descent. Nothing happened. 'Pilot?'
'Sorry Lieutenant but I'm dealing with a minor little crisis here, the food cart will have to wait.'
'Very funny but why are we shaking so much?'
'Its called a tail rotor and without it we all die, kindly be quiet while I deal with it, thank you!' The stricken helicopter got louder by the second and once again the loudmouth pilot didn't help calm their minds as he tried to diagnose the solution with his co-pilot. 'Nick was it an RPG?'
'Possibly. Or a Sameban firework display gone wrong. Chance is a fine thing.' A minute or two of struggle washed by and the pilot stopped talking in snide remarks. Actually he stopped talking completely as did the entire crew and passenger compartment. Amelia made the error of poking her head out of the window to see they had descended already to a dangerous altitude. 'Orson mate, anything you want to say?' He was caught off guard. She wanted to give him a chance to say it. 'Come on mate.'
'Say what?'
'I know alright? You're not hard to read. Don't let me die wondering.' Orson did want to be honest with her eventually so why not now? 'Ok.' He was cut off by a piercing cracking noise and the helicopter veering into a lateral spinning motion that threw everyone onto their side. 'Bollocks, Hotel Two-Two is going down. Crease, we're over Maltecco Springs Boulevard. Or some hotel. We're going in.' Amelia decided to save Orson the struggle of explaining complex thoughts in a moment like this by grabbing his hand and bracing for the crunch of Sameban soil that awaited.

On The Cusp

Blanco Borrayo reports;

The World Cup Finals are an exclusive club indeed, not many nations out there in the wider Sportiverse earn the privilege of stepping out onto the hallowed pitches of Drawkland and Ceni. It's certainly a bit of a slog to weed out the wheat from the chaff. Seventeen rounds of qualification matches have now been and gone, just one remains. The guest list is very nearly complete, with usual suspects like Vilita, Valanora, Eura, Nephara, Bonesea and Schottia booking their flights and already scouting out the choicest training camps ahead of their respective assaults on the trophy itself. But there are still some slots yet to fill, including in our own ‘lil group.

 # Group 2 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Electrum 17 16 1 0 49 15 +34 49
2 Sargossa 17 10 5 2 22 9 +13 35
3 Flardania 17 10 3 4 42 26 +16 33
4 Anthor 17 8 3 6 46 36 +10 27
5 Sulsuland 17 8 3 6 36 26 +10 27

7 Sarrbia 17 6 4 7 27 32 −5 22

9 ASMRLAND 17 2 2 13 17 52 −35 8
10 Cataduanes 17 1 2 14 10 38 −28 5

Reigning world champions Electrum have proven utterly peerless, two points dropped to Sargossa in the opening round of matches the only blemish on an otherwise spotless record. It’s behind them that the excitement lurks. A 3 – 2 Sargossan win over Flardania in the previous round has given the Corsairs the edge in the hunt for the second qualification slot but they need to finish the job against Astograth, a side they’ve not beaten in eight previous encounters. But with the Corsairs on a six game winning run, and a near one hundred place difference in the respective rankings, surely the dreadful record against the ‘Grathi has to end. Surely. Please? Meanwhile, Flardania will be looking to take advantage of any slip-up with a strong showing against bottom side Cataduanes. And revenge too will be on the Kitsunes’ mind, following a shock defeat to the same opposition earlier in the campaign. While the rest of the group looks very much like the seedings predicted. Which is nice.

Hiccups resolved; polling day is here

After what was initially touted as a postal ballot, the day of the self-determination referendum is now occurring all throughout the northern reaches of Electrum. It has taken several delays to get to this stage: a rather sudden change in plans by the Electrumite Electoral Commission in changing from a postal ballot to an attendance vote for fears of vote tampering and multiple voting has meant further delays down the line in finding polling booths as well as finding staff to count votes, man booths, as well as security. It has been a long time coming for the sparsely populated towns in the region, but despite the intense media coverage by the Euran media, the Electrumites have been on the whole, apathetic about the issue. Indeed, Nick Wood, the Conservative Prime Minister, showed his indifference in the self-determination process by spending his day in Prescott promoting Electrum's bid for the Winter Olympics.

On the ground, there is more of a tense feeling in the air. Many former members of the Electrumite Nationalist Party (who were expelled for being too extreme, even for the Nationalists) had promised to create trouble in the polling booths, but the threats haven't come to pass as security was tightened at every polling station. The EEC has worked well in ensuring that this referendum is going to be fully free and fair, and the results legitimate. Already, opinion polling has suggested that up to thirty local government areas with Euran majorities will be voting to leave Electrum, with the remainder thirty or so in the Far North staying with Electrum, mainly due to the Electrumite-majority in those areas. This vote has been a long time coming for the Eurans in the area, who have had an interesting past few years -- a good proportion of them were actually former Eurans who had fled across the border after the Eura-Sameba war, and just stayed where they were, in the face of a newly elected Nationalist government who had threatened to build a wall. But, the wall would not happen: the legislative incompetence of the Nationalist Party was plain to see from their first day of taking power, and after a thankfully short-lived government, the Conservatives were voted back in just this year, with a promise to hold a referendum, with the support of their Euran counterparts from across the border.

For Electrumites in the region, there is a feeling of disappointment for the inevitable. One person I talked to, Anthony Howell, the mayor of Lizardville, one of the local government areas that is slated to remain in Electrum, told me that, "It's disappointing to be losing so much land around us -- we're going to be the northern most part of Electrum now, and there are a lot of good local families caught up in this mess." It is true that there is a lot of resentment on part of the Electrumites in the area: they have been abandoned by the government in favour for a quick and easy resolution with their neighbours to the north -- it is no secret that Eura outmuscles Electrum in nearly every area possible except for living conditions and development. But for the Electrumites, pragmatism isn't good enough, they view the situation more like Electrum bowing down in genuflection for Eura. Comments from the Prime Minister hasn't helped either, calling the area amongst other things, "... economically useless, we've exploited the area for what it's worth anyways. The Eurans can have more desert if they like. Besides they have that overpopulation problem anyways. They need the land."

Despite the perceived indifference from Electrumite politicians, the bureaucracy has been hard at work, already generating transition plans to allow the switch-over to happen in three months from the result date, regardless of whether or not the Eurans were ready to administer the areas. Generous compensation plans are set to be awarded to Electrumites depending on the value of their property, covering relocation costs, the market value of their property and other peripheral costs. Such compensation plans will not be offered to any Eurans. Additionally, Eurans may apply for Electrumite citizenship, but must stay on the Electrumite side of the border once the handover takes place. Additional compensation will be awarded to the government representatives in the area, as they immediately lose their jobs when the border shifts. Meanwhile, it is unknown what plans, if any, the Eurans have for the area, or what they intend to do with the land. Euran Prime Minister Yarley is currently juggling many domestic and international political demands, including their recent application to the Orean Accords, so it remains to be seen if the Eurans are truly ready to take over these tracts of land.

Once the votes are tallied, all contiguous local government areas will be seceded to Eura three months from the results date. Time will tell how the redrawn borders will look, but with wide swaths of uninhabitable land set to swing over to Eura, not much will be lost on part of the Electrumites.

Continued from here.

Sarah Foureleven had found her way to the battlescene. She was still a kid, untested in almost all ways. She looked somewhat innocent in the white dress and top she was wearing, but the glare of her solid-red eyes showed she could be a contender. Whispers around the room from both armed brigades wondered why and how a kid could have wandered into an industrial building in an industrial area in the middle of the night, while also suggesting to each other that they put away their firearms, as they had been of no use moments earlier.

"Sarah," Xi asked, "why are you here?"

"You were in trouble, mother," she replied without emotion or inflection.

"How did you get here?"

"Probably the same way you would," she said, straight-faced.

Wu Fivetwelve, though also surprised at Sarah's appearance thought the parenting could take place at another time.

"I still can't believe someone with such a tiny butt could have kids!" she continued to taunt Xi Foureleven in the best way she knew Xi would find most offensive, while putting on brass knuckles.

Xi took a defensive stance and prepared to physically fight. She knew she could take Fivetwelve out.

"Stop!" Sarah holds her hand up again. "Do not fight!"

It was as if Sarah was controlling the passage of time. Nobody else at the scene could move a muscle, and the males present became dizzy aaaa…
The narrator fell to the ground.

"Sarah!" Xi reminded. "You cannot take out Jason Ninetyfivex!"

"He is male," she responded quite matter-of-fact.

"He is also necessary. At times." Xi rolls her eyes.

Sarah modifies what she did and the story can continue.
Moments later, the males of both groups had become nauseated and ran out of the building as if their lives depended on it. Fivetwelve discovered she was practically glued to the floor; the brass knuckles were suddenly so heavy she couldn't lift her hands off the ground. She tried to move her legs but it was also no use, her boots were just as heavy.

"Heeelllpp meeee," Fivetwelve pleaded, "I'm stuck."

Sarah walked up to within a meter of her.

"In due time," Sarah replied.

The small amount of Fivetwelve's remaining troops retreated outside.

"How much strength do you have left?" Xi asked Sarah.

"Lots."

Xi, her remaining troops, and Sarah, all left the building. They were rejoined by the male troops that had left earlier and they were about to continue on to Pacific City. Except, Jacob Sixsixtysix had permitted and imported cars in a city not designed for them. The streets, shoulders, and sidewalks, so choked of imported junkers of all makes, models, colors, driver-on-left, driver-on-right, etc., were impassable. Pacific City's wheel-like hub-and-spoke pattern meant nobody was going anywhere anytime soon.

Sarah, though she could do so just about anywhere, sought seclusion as to avoid publicly disclosing her powers.

"Mother," she points to an alley, "this way! Only you, mother!"

Xi and Sarah walk to a door at the end, which has a high-security lock on it. Sarah was still able to open the door with ease, and both Fourelevens walk through into a huge hallway-like room, with doors every few steps. Time, space, gravity, etc., are quite different while inside.

"This is how I found you, mother."

Xi had never experienced anything like it before. Looking up or down, left or right, made no difference.

"Do not just open any door," Sarah cautioned. "Not one door is the correct door."

"How did you find me then?"

"The same way I shall find Sixsixtysix."

Xi was very frightened.

"How do you know who I'm trying to find?" Xi asked, as she thought Sarah would have no idea of what was going on.

"He is on TV." Sarah replied. "Yelling and screaming against you."

Sarah opens a door, and directs both of them through. They find themselves in a room with a very short man sitting at a desk resized for his height shouting at a television camera.

"How dare you!" Xi called out.

"Xi Foureleven!" Jacob Sixsixtysix replied while he snapped his fingers, unaware of Sarah's presence. A thug with a machine gun pops out from a room directly across from the Fourelevens and he tries to fire at them, only to actually fire one bullet that takes out his boss. He ran back into the other room where the sounds of people packing up and leaving were taking place.
Meanwhile, in Oceanside:

It was time for General Failure's pregame coaching meeting with his players and staff. Everyone assembled as he looked at his clipboard, only to place it on the table below the eraseboard and not look at it again.

"We're playing a team we played earlier to a scoreless tie," he said, "so I'm going to go about this a little differently. If you have a good look or you have a window, take the shot. We can win this, but we have to get on the scoreboard. Now when we get out there today, there's going to be a lot of energy. We have to use the positive energy to score. Defense! Stay vigilant and make sure we're keeping the ball out of our box. Try to keep coverage even and look for opportunities to pass the ball up to our attacking end. Overall though, if you have a good look or you create a window, score! That's all!"

As if the tension in Haven wouldn't be enough, it was a heavy humid day in Maal. Players on both sides were already laboring on the sidelines before the first whistle even came, but the ocean stubbornly refused to let even the slightest breeze come to their relief.

Reina wandered up to Leon, hoping to distract herself from the weather. "Hey, did you end up finding anything interesting in Pasarga?"

"Unfortunately not," Leon somberly replied, "the Pasargans seem to want to hold on to the secrets of Pasargia far more than I anticipated. Many of them would refuse to even acknowledge my presence when I inquired about it, I assume to ensure they didn't accidentally let any indication of knowledge to slip through. And the boat I chartered was useless; the captain only wanted to go along predetermined tourist routes, and wouldn't accept any amount of compensation to sate my academic curiosity!"

"Aww, that's hardly fair." I'm just happy he didn't get beat up was a thought Reina decided to keep to herself.

"It's absolutely fair," Don sneered, surprising both backs that he was listening. "If a delusional tourist gets up in arms at me I certainly wouldn't give them the time of day. 'Pasargia' was just a stupid typo, Leon, stop wasting your time."

Reina couldn't quite make out what Leon grumbled after that, but it was getting close enough to game start that she just decided to leave it be.

I'm not getting a chance any time soon, am I? Solara ranged back as the pressure built up once again; the Pasargans were playing with the intensity you'd expect from a team of their caliber on the bubble, but the Mriin defense was pulling together to match them. We can't get the ball out of our half, but none of their shots are... particularly threatening.

‘Thor’ in particular was having issues negotiating with Uhlon--the earlier cuts an imposing figure even to the taller satyrs, but Uhlon's play hinges on his tough-guy reputation; he was never going to back down, and made things claustrophobic for Auðbjörnsson.

“Great fuckin’ work!” Zilia shouted as she threw the ball back in. Having them play proper defense for once is SO NICE. Unfortunately, working off those saves was a difficult proposition--the Pasargans seemed to be everywhere, leaving Gerard to settle for safe passes that got much of nothing done to start drives. Hunor was the end of several by himself, repeatedly stripping the ball from Hilda and Joren--that they hadn’t capitalized on his excellent start must have been excruciating to watch for the away fans.

Especially when Hunor finally slipped--literally, on the damp grass--just before a stale first half could come to a close, letting Joren lunge forward into an unexpected pocket of open pitch. With the Pasargan backs naturally playing an aggressive line coupled with their total dominance of possession thus far, they were dangerously out of position.

Finally! was all Solara thought before bolting, cutting across the field to lose Sommer while trying to stay onsides. Mari managed to turn quickly enough to be a few steps behind Joren, but otherwise the rest of the Mriinians were caught just as off-guard as the Pasargans, leaving the ball in an extremely empty-feeling half. Joren’s run was unopposed for just long enough that both Oddson and Wefel had to collapse on him in desperation, opening up a free pass to Solara on the wing.

The scouting reports had been clear. Joren and Don had looked over hours of Pasargan footage, and one thing was clear: Friedmann was their weak point. Solara made that clear. Mriin were up by one at the half.

Second-half possession was a little more even--Mriin made a few ventures into the Pasargan box, but Shalhoub handedly stopped all challenges. A more alert defense--not wanting to make the same mistake twice--kept Solara and Aldo off balance, while Mari could barely find a way in at all. The weather hadn’t relented--everyone was thoroughly warm and damp, slowing drives to a much more manageable pace. On the other end, the less congested mode of play came to the visitor’s advantage--despite getting less shots overall, shot quality dramatically increased with the increased space to play, Feierabend and Thor repeatedly testing Zilia’s limits.

But she was meeting those tests. And time continued to tick by. The eightieth minute had been reached, and Don cautiously began to believe that they’d actually take the full three points to clinch qualification!

Then Thor said something to Uhlon. Zilia couldn’t make it out, but she definitely saw him say something, and Uhlon’s chest swelling up. Shit. That’s not good.

Matters were made worse when Jurkovic delivered a spectacular cross from the middle of nowhere directly into the box. Thor made a move to jump for it… and Uhlon smashed him to the ground without hesitation. The red card was immediate.

They hadn’t clinched yet.

World Cup 78 Part One: Takeaway | Two: Duchess | Three: Fidget | Four: Torque | Five: Omen | Six: Leap | Seven: Screams | Eight: Iota | Nine: Death | Ten: Wrong | Eleven: Happy | Twelve: Together | Thirteen: Sweat | Fourteen: Taken | Di Bradini Cup 41 Part Fifteen: Stunned | World Cup 79: Part Sixteen: Fame | Seventeen: Weird

"What is wrong with these sheep?" she shouted, pacing up and down.

"There is a multitude of things wrong with home sapiens, my dear," Tororin Halatyrion replied without moving a muscle of his body, attempting to be the calm centre of the small side room in the Praetoran Palace, "but none of them are eminently fixable while watching a World Cup Qualifying match. And," by way of attempting to quietly shush her without her noticing that he was trying to shush her, "if the Lady-Protector wants to remain quite as well loved as she is now, she will refrain from implying that the people of this land are ovine!"

"But they are," Korra insisted, still furious, "their emotions are swirling like a storm at the best of times, and this during football nonsense is the absolute worst time for it."

"The Starblaydi are a passionate people."

"They're an idiotic people," Korra shot back, "so concerned with the kicking of footballs that they don't notice what's in front of their noses. Every week it's one way or the other depending on what irrelevant score the national team managed, highs and lows at the whims of a stupid game that doesn't even matter!"

Tororin took only a mild amount of offence at that.

"It's a rollercoaster of moronic, follower behaviour. Remember when we had all those high-scoring matches and got high up in that table? The country was on a high, I could feel the emotions through everyone in this building, everyone I meet. And then two games later and all of a sudden there's misery and depression and sullen behaviour from everyone - it's absolutely ridiculous! Do you know that after that Filindostan match, the huge loss, I had actually officially outlawed torture? Nobody paid the slightest damn bit of attention! No more tortue, in law, in Starblaydia of all places! We've been doing that for three hundred years to keep the thrice-damned sheep in line and it was one of the few things that the international community could still legitimately chide us for, and I banned it, and they didn't give a damn because some team had put three past them in forty-five minutes to inflict the heaviest defeat on our team since Osarius in the 50th AOCAF Cup, seventeen years ago!"

"Well that was a rather large-" Tororin began.

"How do I even know these pointless facts?!" Korra shouted again.

"Because," Tororin said softly, stepping silently over to the leader of Starblaydia and placing his long, lean fingers on her shoulders, "you are a wise and benevolent leader who, actually, has some semblance of care for the flock of idiots under her charge, and remembers the things that, although trivial to those of breeding and intelligence, are important to the ordinary, honest, hard working morons of the land."

For a moment, Korra's face was hard and grim, but it broke suddenly into a genuine laugh.

"You do always say the funniest things, Tororin," Korra said, smiling up at him, "maybe when they win the World Cup I'll execute every traitor I can find and install myself as Praetor for life. After all, no one would notice, right?"

"Perhaps."

The Sabinal Post ~ Calling Leaves VFA Scrambling For Players

As readers of the Post are undoubtedly aware, the previous month saw the event which was described by the few elves left as a Calling take place in Valanora, where upon millions upon millions of elves have apparently left this world for another. While the specifics of the event remain clouded in mystery, with the elves who have remained not wishing to disclose the apparent sacred and mystical event that transpired, we do know that the majority of the elven population in Valanora are no longer here. With the World Cup set to occur this summer, the VFA is now looking at a squad that only has five players in it, with only: Espy va Drake, Laborious Hawk, Faeron Soldarian, Ilglerdiriel Lithvathar, and Allendren Fresco remaining. Research and letters are going out quickly to find any players who have yet to be capped by another nation that could or do hold Vanorian citizenry in order for Tobias Möller to be able to select a full squad ahead of the World Cup, with the draw for the Finals having been conducted last night. Opponents currently are not a concern, so much as finding enough abled bodied players to fill out the roster. Feelers have gone out across the region for any potential players to declare their allegiance and to those in the Premiership as well. Whether this venture is successful or not may well just determine if the squad can even think to put up a performance in the upcoming Finals or if it might be something of a national embarrassment on the cards.

OOC: This is a call to any in Atlantian Oceania or with strong ties to Valanora to submit players that could/would be dual nationals to fill up the roster. Please TG this nation with any potential players, having their position, current club, age, sex, age, height, weight, and general talent level. Thanks in advance to those who choose to participate in this transitional period.

the independent

world cup 79

the blue invincibles! tumbra smash way into world cup finals, meet covello, schottia, eshan

TUMBRA yesterday received its group for the 79th World Cup, to be held in Ceni and Drawkland. The team, now ranked 21st in the world and sixth in Esportiva, will be in the same group as the nascent state South Covello (until recently known as Gregoryisgodistan), world number one Schottia, and Eshan. Hopes are high following an exceptionally strong qualifying cycle - the second time Tumbra have reached the finals and the third full coaching cycle under established coach Robin Stoff. There are rumours flying about that if Stoff should get a good performance, he might be knighted for services to football.

Having been sorted into Group 12 at the very start of this campaign, along with world footballing stalwarts Farfadillis, up-and-coming Soltsteed and recent opponents Mattijana, amongst others. After getting off to a characteristically shaky start (Of the seven qualifying campaigns Tumbra has experienced, only 2 have started off with a win) with a 4-4 draw against New Gazi, Tumbra flew, with back-to-back wins against Mattijana (3-2), the United Celtic Peoples (0-2) and Romanian (7-2). Following another draw with Kecrazia (1-1), Tumbra smashed Platerdam 3-0 at home before drawing Farfadillis away (2-2), securing them a solid second in the table.

A hard-fought 0-2 win against Soltsteed would follow, while another 3-0 win against St. Wilhelm would end the first half of qualifying for Tumbra on a high, with second place on 21 points. An impressive run of wins would follow, with successive wins against New Gazi (5-1), Mattijana (0-3), the UCP (4-3), Romanian (1-3). Two uninspiring 1-0 wins against Kecrazia and Platerdam would follow, before the shock of the qualifying campaign.

In a hugely anticipated match under the floodlights, Tumbra beat second-ranked in the world Farfadillis 8-3, with Krajewski and Hussein both scoring hat-tricks against a Farf side that looked underwhelming all night long. That match secured both Tumbra and Farfadillis the qualifying spots they needed, and kept the record clean with no defeats.

The campaign ended with another 1-0 win against Soltsteed and a disappointing 1-1 draw with St Wilhelm. With Tumbra being one of five teams to advance without being defeated, hopes were (and still are) high for the world cup ahead.

the world cup proper

With two weeks to go until the tournament proper begins, much attention has been drawn to the three nations Tumbra will be sharing a group with. First up is world no.1 Schottia, who, despite Electrum being reigning champions, are number 1 in the world rankings. Tumbra remains winless against Schottia, with two previous meetings resulting in a draw and a loss. They provide some link to the World Cup 78 campaign as well - Schottia were Tumbra's first ever opponents in the final, 32-nation, tournament.

The next two nations are interesting for less footballing reasons. South Covello, which until recently was known as the totalitarian dictatorship Gregoryisgodistan, and Eshan have interesting links. While both will prove to be interesting matches on the pitch, Tumbra has not done anything politically about the Covello Uprising. While politics and sport should never mix, these may prove to be interesting matches.

The World Cup begins just after Christmas 2026, and is available to watch on TBC 3.

The Conclusion

'Their coming!' Maeve Bronte yelled as she jumped from the crow’s-nest. 'Everyone, get to your battle stations.' The players had suspected that Robert Kolbeck might have tried something following their elimination from the World Cup, and sure enough, the yachts were there, right on cue.

Building work on his island casino had been halted for seven years, while the Christopheran national team had squatted there. Three back-to-back World Cup qualifications had helped stave off the billionaire's attempts to evict them, but with their recent failure, he was going to seize his opportunity. The whole playing squad had returned with manager Jim Reid, to help batten down the hatches, and see if they could hold them off. They had hastily looked into arranging a friendly - just something to make the pitch seem in use - but at this rate, it didn't look like there would be time.

Players, staff members, and activists frantically ran back and forth, as Maeve sprinted back along the jetty, lighting the tapper, which would eventually set it a blaze. Thomas Sanchez, hurriedly chained himself to the to the stadium doorway, while other players did the same at all the various entrances and exits.

Kolbeck's yacht was now close enough that it could be seen from the manmade island, and it was clearly flanked on either side by police patrol boats. The law had always been on his side, as opposed to the squatters, but now he felt that he hand the moral backing to act.

'Jim. Get to your position!' Meave tried to grab her manager by the arm as she ran from the flames. The fact that the players and manager were so comfortably on first name terms perhaps said a lot about the team spirit. 'Come on.'

Something made her stop though. It was the look in the manager's face, those sad eyes, and drooped shoulders. The man was done, he was finished, he'd had enough. There was something in his body language that triggered the same reaction in Maeve, and the Crisisbless player's own fight fell from her like someone had opened a trapdoor in her stomach. It was a feeling that seemed to be spreading, as player by player, they slowly abandoned their post.

Thomas unchained himself, Rachel Del Arro and Stella Watson winched themselves back out of the tunnel they had dug. Before long the entire squad and non-playing staff were stood shoulder to shoulder by Jim, looking out through the dying flames towards the approaching boats.

'Thanks everyone.' Jim eventually broke the silence. 'I want to thank all of you for everything.' He struck a sombre tone. 'You've all given up a lot over the past seven year, and know what? I think we've made our point.'

The boats were now no further than a hundred metres from the beach, and were clearly trying to work out how best to come ashore. One look at the two kilometre square island told anyone exactly how big a point they had made. A small stadium capable of holding a five-figure attendance, a training complex, and some accommodation for visiting teams and supporters. All of this would likely be pulled down now to make way for the gaudy lights of Kolbeck's casino.

To think that they had tried to scrap the islands international side because they were an embarrassment... The players had gone on to qualify for World Cup 76 just to spite Kolbeck and his cronies at the FA. Since taking over the WCC membership they had soared to just outside the world's top thirty - so much for an embarrassment.

'I hope none of you think I've let you down...' Reid added, but the look on all of their faces told him he had nothing to worry about. 'I know it's probably not done any of your careers much good...' Again, they shook their heads in disagreement. 'A lot of you have also dug into your own pockets over the year, to help us out financially... But I hope - I hope you will go away from here with your heads held high at least.'

Jim was of course uncertain as to what would happen to the players in terms of international eligibility, and given a few of them actually had pretty promising club careers, it would be a shame to see them dashed on the rocks. The elephant in the room was obviously Schottia, and whether or not some special dispensation would be made for the small overseas territory, allowing their players to don the white and green. It was probable, but no one could know for certain. Things were never that simple though, really, and the reality was that there would be no easy fix.

'I'd have tried to keep it going a bit longer but...' As men began to jump from the boats, out in the shallows, it was obvious that Jim's voice was cracking up. He was proud man - above all things pride was his big strength - he wouldn't want to break down in emotion now. It had been seven years since he had spent longer than a few days off this island, or spent any time with his family. Sensing this, his assistant, Nori Bouden, placed a hand on the 47-year-old's shoulder. 'I'm just tired...'

'I know big man.' The assistant said, barely able to keep his own voice steady. 'Let's get you home.'

SBCNEWS Online...
World Cup special - My Top Ten.
by Larry Watt, Schottia international, and former Champions' Cup winner.

When SBC Sports approached me at the end of Qualifiers with a view to compiling this list, it was something I agreed to without hesitation. 'Just an evening's work,' was how it was sold to me. 'Someone with your experience could put in together in your sleep,' the Deputy Sports Editor added as we parted. Other than a couple of radio interviews, and an article I wrote for the Marionville supporter's rag a ten years ago, I had literally nothing in the way of journalistic experience to fall back on. Perhaps then, it was my naivety that led me to completely underestimate the work involved in this task.

As I sat down at my desk - cracked my knuckles - and told the twins, Sarah and Laura, that Daddy just needed a wee minute to think, I couldn't have possibly guessed that I would still be poring over the article two days later. You see, the problem wasn't so much in working out which players to include... it was working out which to leave out.

'Is Kira Koromin number one Daddy..?' Sarah asked me at one point, as I become so engrossed in my task that I didn't realise she had even crept into the office. 'Eh, maybe...' I answered, not really knowing how to tell her that her favourite player might not even be on the list at all. That was the problem in a nutshell; the list of world-class players not making the list was growing uncomfortably long. What was worse for me, is that I would have to go back to my friends and teammates at the Shadow B'betsy after this and tell them why none of the Champions' Cup 68 winners had made in onto the list. I was starting to feel that even in putting pen to paper, I was setting myself up for one almighty fall.

So... After four days of deliberation, and some of the toughest decisions I've ever had to make in my life... I have no doubt incurred the wrath of half the world's football fans, my own club mates, and worst of all, my eight-year-old daughter.

Anyway, please enjoy the article, just don't say you weren't warned.

10. Xíxì Êns, 20. Striker. Dí Maozöxê | Farfadillis

Xíxì Êns is a young striker I like a lot. I reckon if I end up doing this list again in five years time, he will feature much closer to the top. At the age of just eighteen, the Dí Maozöxê star was already an important player for club and country, and it looks like he is getting better with every game he plays at this level. He is already a league winner in his home country of Farfadillis, and helped his club lift the AOCL as well as putting in a strong run all the way to the Globe Cup final. The 32 goals he scored in the league last season would put him up there with the best SPL strikers in terms of hit rate, but it's all the more impressive given the fact that he is more of a creator than an out and out goal scorer. Thirty assists in 34 appearances is nothing short of phenomenal, meaning that on average this 20-year-old scored one and sets one up in every match he plays. What really sets this guy apart though is his maturity, and watching him play is like looking at someone ten years older. I don't think you could have a list of the best players in the world without including one Farf attacker, and Xíxì Êns is my personal pick.

9. JK Cottle, 32 (in Schottia). Central-defence. Handon United | Bonesea

The only SPL player to make the list, just squeezes in at number nine. Quite incredibly, the Handon United and Bonesea captain actually worked as a diver for the National Grid until he turned pro in his mid-twenties. JK is the "one", in the Sailors' 1-2-7 formation - which as a right-back, kind of fills me with confusion. The Boney has been solid as a rock since Jane Gullie made him her first signing as Handon United manager, snapping him up from Florence Boldclub for an undisclosed fee (believed to have included several dozen cases of single malt whisky). Cottle was SPL player of the year last season, while the club lifted the league title, along with runs to the final of both the Champion's Cup and Schottic Cup. While a steadfast and stout-hearted pillar at the back, Cottle also found the time to chip in ten goal last season, and has a habit of getting his noggin on the end of anything Natalie Adams whips into the box. The writers at Boldsport Magazine recently put him at him third in the Galactico's Index; but I think I might need a little bit more of whatever they're drinking, because for me, he's ninth.

8. Sandra Sybill, 32. Central Midfield. Real Azuris | Chromatika

Sybill is in the wonderful position of playing for one of the rising nations in WCC football, as well as a club who are emerging as a real force to be reckoned with domestically. Since making the switch to Real Azuris from Z’ai’ai Mountaineers, the 32-year-old has gone on to become one of the most decorated players in the Harlighet Ligen. Coming third last in last year's Player of The Year award, and second the year before, the Chromatik has been part of the Kylde side's march towards back-to-back league titles. This former Champion's Cup winner brings vision, craft, and guile to the Real midfield - and to my mind, is one of the best in the world at bridging the gap between midfield and the attack. Sybill must now be homing in on the hundred cap mark for Chromatika, and it is easy to see why she has become so indispensible to Silian Parker's side, with her ability to seek out those pockets from which to unleash her powerful strike. Now that she is reaching the autumn years of her career, Sybill is a battle hardened and wily competitor, who could probably add something to any midfield in the Multiverse.

7. Polaox Torerun, 25. Midfield. Turoki Tide | Vilita

Torerun is a real engine-room midfielder, who came to prominence during Vilita's World Cup 77 win. In my opinion, there are few players in the world right now who can drive a team forward in quite the same way. This much was evident in Turoki Tide recent Globe Cup success as well as the club's performances in the Vilitan League. The fact that he is also Tide's top goal-scorer from the midfield shows exactly what he brings to the table, and the versatility he has to his game. It can be so important to have midfielders who can chip in with the odd goal, and this may well be vital for Vilita, as they look to reclaim their title this year. The Jungle Cats were the only team to beat us over ninety minutes last cycle, and with an individual like Torerun now forcing his way into the national side, they are most certainly a set of players I would not look forward to facing again.

6. Rowena Strongbow, 22. Left-wing. Avenida Leal | Nephara

It's all happening very quickly for the 22-year-old, whose career, I would reckon, is about to skyrocket over the next twelve moths. Out of all the players on this list, she is perhaps the one with the least silverware to here name, but judging by the one and only time Rowena Strongbow and I locked horns, I can promise you she deserves to be here. She is an old-school left-winger (sometimes those are the best) who by all accounts 'left many mouths agape' in Farfadillis last season, scoring 18 goals in 31 games for Avenida Leal. The former Cranequin Wanderers girl had a mixed fist season in Nepharim football, and despite some very impressive performances, losses in both the NFA Cup final and Relegation Play-off in quick succession meant it was time to move on. The player who has been described as 'two-footed' has pace to burn, and the press in Farfadillis and Nephara both seem to have her marked out as a very special star of the future. Nephara have absolutely cruised through Qualifying, and going on what I've read, and the snippets of their matches I've seen, Strongbow has been the difference. I can honestly say, as a right-back, she is the best left-winger I've ever come up against. So, if you hadn't made me look like such an old mad during our match in the Eagle's Cup, Rowena, I might have even put you a couple of places higher.

5. Evelyn Conjure, 26. Central Midfield. Brinemouth | Schottia

Schottia might be number one in the world rankings, but Evelyn Conjure at number five on this list, is as far as we get in terms of individual talent. Individuals don't make a team of course... but the sure go a long way towards it, and the Brinemouth star has really galvanised our team over the last two cycles. I kind of had to double check my notes after realising that she is actually the only Nepharim Premiership star on the list. It seems peculiar, given the fact that there were about fifteen on my long list of fifty, but this shortlist has surprised me as much as it will probably surprise you. Eve is one of those metronomic, hard-working midfielders, who does a lot of fetching and carrying for the team. Like a lot of the players on this list, she too has come a long way in a short time, going from a bit part player at Blue Coast 1981, to a World Cup bronze medallist with a starting role at Brinemouth. Knowing her personally, I have to say she is one of the most dedicated professionals in the team, and really gets the best out of those playing alongside her. She was Galactico's runner-up twelve months ago, and had I been putting this list together then, she might have been nearer the top. However, on the balance of where things are right now, I'm sticking with fifth.

4. Kris Campbell, 34. Striker. Ulsa | Eura

Similarly story to Evelyn; were I to have been writing this up twelve months ago, Campbell might well have been top, but at 34, I feel he has just slipped from his perch. The Ulsa striker will undoubtedly be remembered as one of greats of world football, although I'll always remember him for his two goals that kept us out of the World Cup 78 final. He was the difference on that occasion, as he has been for most of his career, since emerging from the Mâ Âlâmëómë youth system. Campbell was a late bloomer, earning his first cap aged 25 at World Cup 72. However, buoyed by the nation's near success in that tournament, he was back leading the line for the Rushmori side as they lifted the trophy two years later in Apox and Quebec. He might have lost some of his pace, but Campbell is barely less ruthless in front of goal. Even at his age, he is still very much a formidable opponent, who may well have a hand to play yet in this coming World Cup. It always seems from reading Euran press articles that Campbell was rather a nice surprise - a player who came out of almost nowhere, to achieve a large measure of success with club and country.

3. Ragnar Targaryen, 27. Striker. CA Paulinthal | Cosumar

I'll probably get a fair bit of stick for having Targaryen as low down the order as third, and to be honest, it was a very tough call. The CAP striker has absolutely cleared up in the awards in recent years. He did the hattrick domestically last season, and then scooped the Galactico's top spot for good measure. In my very humble opinion, Targaryen is the best striker in the world right now, and may even go down as one of the best ever, depending on what happens over the next couple of years. The list of strikers at the Vanquishers' disposal right now is kind of breathtaking, and the fact that he is ahead of Kathryn Kvanderwyk, Kevin Stabb, and Elena Culbreth should really say it all. All the players on this list are exceptional talents in their own right, but over forty goals in all competitions for Paulinthal, the year they lifted the title, would suggest that he is right at the top of his game. Similarly to Kris Campbell, Targaryan was a bit of a late bloomer, and only forced his was into the first CAP fist team set up at 23. The sturdy little striker was at the club for six years before he got his big break, and maybe this makes the case for players not being rushed through the ranks too quickly. I too was in my thirties when I made the Champions' Cup final and had that incredible year with Schottia; so given than players are getting fitter these days, we may start to see experience become more of a factor.

2. Tyler Fernando, 33. Central Midfielder. Centralis Heart | Electrum

Despite being Electrum's World Cup winning captain, I'm going to venture to suggest that Fernando is still a little underrated. Electrum were perhaps slightly unexpected champions at World Cup 78, as they defeated two times winners Eura in the final. However, the fact that they cruised through qualifying with such ease this time round, suggests that there was no luck involved. In terms of his energy and work rate, in my opinion, Tyler Fernando is second to none right now. He is one of those individuals who were just born to lead, and seems to just drag the entire team forward with him. The Centralis Heart man is another player on this list who seems to be improving with age, as the years have done nothing to blunt his on field intelligence. His awareness, and unselfishness make him a real player's player, and the kind of midfielder that others love to play alongside. He has helped keep his club consistently near the top of the extremely competitive TL-West, leading them to a Regional Championship, as well as several good runs in UICA competition.

1. Bryger Tidesson, 21. Right-wing. Real Azuris | Cosumar

Cosumar are the only nation to have two players on this list, and in reality, there were several others who very nearly joined them. Pretty much the entire forward line, who need no introduction, and can count themselves unlucky. Yeah, the side that beat us twice in the Eagle's Cup last year are probably my favourites to lift the trophy this summer, and if they do so, they could well have Bryger Tidesson to thank. For some people reading this, Tidesson might come across as a controversial choice, but this 21-year-old is the best right winger I've seen in seventeen years as a professional footballer. He was named player of the year as Real Azuris secured back-to-back Harlighet Ligan championship last season, netting sixteen times in the process. Tidesson is a strong lad, fast, technically gifted, and he has a creativity that few can match. What really sets him apart though, is the way he is willing to track back and put the work in defensively. It's sometimes hard to believe that the eldest of the Tidesson siblings is still only 21, as he has already been around the Real first team for five years. He has tasted Champions' Cup and Cygnus Cup success, as well as contributing to his club's recent domestic dominance. This guy has four other siblings all coming through the ranks at Real Azuris; and given that youth team's recent success, Tidesson would seem to be a name we will be hearing a lot over the next ten years.

So congratulations Bryger there's a case a Lammerton Lager on its way to you in the post. Actually not really, there's no prize other than warm fuzzy feeling that comes from knowing that I think you're great. I know not all of you reading this list will entirely approve of my inclusions, but I hope we can at least agree that these are some of the players to watch at the World Cup finals. I've tried to base it on success as much as individual talent, and most players on this list have been big winners over the last couple of years.

I now have to go off and explain to my eight-year-old daughter why her favourite player didn't make the list. Maybe I'll tell her that she was eleventh, just to be diplomatic.

OOC: This is by no means any sort of definitive list, it's just meant as an option piece by one of my characters. It's generally based on success over the last cycle, both internationally and domestically; taking into account, also, who has been on form during qualifying.

To Brobdingnag We Go
Chapter One: Broken Furniture and Cowboy Boots

With his father and half-sister in tow, Andrew Arrowsword climbed up the stairs of his Whitehaven apartment building. Looking behind him, Andrew saw the building's receptionist raise her eyebrows and open her mouth, her eyes wondering where he had managed to find the two Drawkians in his party. He watched as they ducked to get into his apartment, barely avoiding hitting their heads on the low door post. "I do have to apologize for the low ceilings here. I don't think they had Drawkians in mind when they designed this building."

Sarah Arrowsword plopped herself down into one of Andrew's wicker chairs, positioned with a magnificent view of the sea. "I don't think those chairs will -" Andrew started to say as the chair collapsed and Sarah's bottom found itself in contact with the cold, hard ground. Andrew finished his sentence. "- support your weight. Welcome to my apartment. It's not much, but it's something."

"Here, let me help pick up this mess." Seth Arrowsword ventured, bending down to pick up the fragments of wood scattered around the white tile floor. Andrew turned his gaze out to the azure ocean's waves, licking the rocky shores underneath his apartment. A fishing boat braved the wind and waves out on the ocean as a couple of hardy shores wandered along the shoreline. In the distance, a storm was dumping inches of rain on the ocean, covering the sky with ominously dark clouds.

Seth picked up the last fragments of rattan cane from the floor and asked where the trash can was. Andrew showed him the way to the kitchenette - all of thirty feet from the living room - and the waste receptacle, where Seth deposited a mound of scraps of what used to be one of Andrew's chairs. "Sorry about that - we'll try to be more careful next time."

Andrew disappeared into his bedroom for a second and rummaged through his closet before emerging with two sturdy-looking wooden chairs, precariously balanced on his arms and shoulders. "Here. You don't have to stand around so awkwardly. I keep these around for when I have guests - it just takes me a while to dig them out from the mountain of crap I have in my closet." He scratched his head. "Come to think of it, why didn't I get them out earlier?"

Taking their seats, the two Drawkians murmured their gratitude to Andrew. An awkward silence soon followed before Sarah said, almost unnoticeably, "You have a nice place here, Andrew, with the exception of your fragile furniture." She smiled and began to chuckle. "Mind if we took a look around?"

'But we just sat down..." Seth protested.

"Did I say you had to stand up?" retorted Sarah, with a tone resembling that of a mother chiding a child who wanted one toy too many. "I just want to see what kind of place Andrew has - and if all the other furniture will break just as easily as that chair."

Andrew sighed. "Feel free to look around, but you don't have my permission to break the furniture!" he said, placing a clear emphasis on the word don't. As Sarah went off exploring, Andrew turned to his father. "Indulge my curiosity - what finally brought you here after all these years?"

"The short answer is Sarah. She convinced me that I would be a bad parent if I didn't come and see you, and congratulate you about what a career you've had!" He reached out to Andrew to try and hug him, but Andrew just pushed him back.

"I'm not sure I'm ready to open up after twenty-four years of being without a father, after just the short answer. What's the long answer?"

Andrew could tell his father was trying to hide something from the brief pause between his question and his father's answer. "The long answer is Sarah and your mother: I missed her and..." He cut off his answer as Sarah came back into the room holding a pair of cowboy boots and a cowboy hat.

"What are these for?" Sarah asked, in what sounded like a mixture of curiosity and interrogation.

Andrew eyed the pair and noted that it was the first pair that he had bought all those years ago to take Liam out to that pirate fort in Azuris. "Those? My boyfriend and I got those a couple of years ago to go have some fun in Azuris without being noticed."

"One pair of boots for two people?" Seth wondered aloud, but then the beet red color of mortification spread all over his face. "Did you say boyfriend - and having fun?"

"Not in that way, Dad. And yes, I have a boyfriend - his name is Liam, and he's a tennis player." Andrew noticed he sounded a little defensive, but then again, Seth didn't seem too pleased with the way things were going.

The red color faded from Seth's face, only to be replaced by a ghostly pallor. He tried to sputter out some words, but nothing would come out.

Andrew frowned. "You don't look great. Would you like something to drink?" Seth nodded silently, and Andrew filled a glass of water for him, setting it down on the counter. "What's the matter with him?" Andrew mouthed to Sarah, gesturing toward his father.

Sarah motioned to go into Andrew's bedroom, where they could talk out of their father's earshot. "Being gay is, ah, how should I put this? It just doesn't happen in Drawkland, so I guess Dad is just a little shocked about all this." She set the boots and hat on the bed.

"And what do you think about it?" asked Andrew, curiously.

Sarah shrugged. "I've been in Ceni long enough to grow accustomed to same-sex relationships. Really, I don't think Dad has much of a problem per se with it. It's just the surprise factor." She turned to leave the room but paused in the doorway. "Oh, one more thing - I'm not really sure why you would want to dress up as a cowboy. I guess that's what weird half-brothers do, I guess." She left to go check on their dad as Andrew shook his head, sighing. He sat down on the bed and put the hat on, looking at himself in the mirror. Immediately, his mind ventured to that outing with Liam back in Azuris... What a day! What a meal!

Those were the glory days. He wished he could live them again. Unfortunately, however, reality intervened, and the glory days were no more.

World Cup: Longstar releases long-awaited team selection for World Cup 79

As the next edition of the World Cup approaches, Cenian national team manager Luke Longstar has named his final squad of twenty-three players to compete on home soil for international football's most coveted trophy.

Of course, Andrew Arrowsword will be the main star of the show, having recently been named to Boldsport's shortlist for best player in the multiverse, the second time in his relatively short career. Along with Arrowsword, the core of the squad will have experience working together, having traveled to Pasarga last year to compete in the Copa Rushmori, Ceni's first outing at the regional event, where they took fourth place, which helped to bring up their mojo after a disappointing World Cup campaign two years ago.

However, there were some surprises as Longstar shook quite a few things up in only his second major tournament at the helm of Ceni's national team. Most surprising of all was the inclusion of four defenders in the starting lineup, something that Ceni has not seen since the beginning of its football days. Also surprising was Longstar's choice to include Lexington Victory central midfielder Avi Renning in the starting lineup over the experienced Allison Swan, who plays for Nephara's Brinemouth.

Aging stars Jacen Xasan, Jacob Zajon, and Andrew Daren did not make the squad, despite the latter winning the Champions' Cup trophy last year. However, the 33-year-old Kel Koromin, who recently made a move to Dwile Warriors after a long and productive career at Schottia's club side Cornellians, got the nod, but he did announce that this would be his final World Cup in Cenian gear.

Koromin and Arrowsword will make up the side's striking duo, backed up by attacking midfielders Adrian del Toro and Marc-Andre Onasi, who has had some success at Port Christopher's Willox Street Pirates. Renning and Port Sebastian's Jasper Valaran will act as playmakers in the midfield, while defensive stalwarts Evan Turich-Albertson, Liam Lorechian, and Justin Morroghany will be joined by relatively new face Miri Windtide in the back line. Ryan Navir will be wearing the goalkeepers' gloves for a second time after continuing good performances at Eastern Stars.

The lineup has a large amount of flexibility, however, as the defense can switch to a more offensive posturing with the addition of a third striker, and Longstar has plenty of flexibility on that front. Defensive midfielder Nova Kymeri could also add more flexibility to the midfield, and there are also quite a few young options in the attacking midfield.

Longstar has expressed high hopes for his team heading into the second World Cup held on home soil. "Our goal for this tournament is to make it to the quarterfinals or beyond. Obviously, we don't have an easy way forward, seeing as we have to face Bonesea on the first day of the tournament, but any points we can take will help us in our way back on our feet."

Vans fend off Spaamers, World Cup baby!

T.V. CITY, QASDEN
by Brian H

Well, ladies and gentlecats, our own Qasden Vans have finally claimed something bigger than 2 Cup of Harmony trophies!

Nearly one week ago, the Qasden National Team traveled to Paatukar to challenge the back-to-back qualifiers, Spaam, for one of the final spots in the 79th World Cup Proper. For Spaam, this could mean their third consecutive qualification since their return to the greatest digital tournament in all of the Multiverse. For the Qads, this meant more. This not only meant the chance to break away from the chains of harmonic defeat, but it gave them the perception of becoming a legitimately large name in the sport. As the game commenced, the Spaamanians ran off with an early lead, scoring the first goal only 20 minutes into the match. But that didn't last, oh no it didn't. With goals by Xandreas (35'), Bostun (66'), and Darsten (82'), the Qads pulled away from the orange and black's initial strike to win one of the biggest matches in Qad history by a score of 3-1. With that victory under their belt, the Vans were able to punch their billets for the 79th World Cup, contested in Ceni and Drawkland.

Following the match, celebrations were held all across the nation in proportions nearly the size of the Cup of Harmony title festivals. It was a historic moment in Qasdonian history, of course it'd be f***ing insane! Anyways, with the win in hand, Qasden joined a prestigious group of 32 elites, all of which will compete at the proper tournament next week. Besides this honor, the Blue-Reds are also one of 2 debutants in the World Cup, with the other being fellow Class of 63r, 95X. Other interesting qualifiers include veterans such as Cassadaigua, Free Republics, and Sargossa, as well as up and coming show stars like Mriin, Eshan, Tumbra, and former Sunrise Islands, Kita-Hinode. Now, all Qasden has to do is survive as long as possible to get the best possible start in their epic journey.

With the draw conducted, the Qads will meet up with 3 heavy hitters in Group F of the WC, of which their matches will be held in the capital of Cenial. First up on our hit list is the team with a nickname significantly different than its nation's name, Super Llamaland. The Llamas/Tigers are nowhere near the status of "newbie" like the Qads, seeing as they have competed in an array of World Cup tournaments and even hosted the 67th Cup of Harmony alongside Red Blackiland. Last cycle, the Tigers had reached the Group Stage of the proper before being narrowly cheesed off from knockouts by Schottia. Despite this gloominess, the Tigers were able to rebound in a fantastic way, securing the title of champion at the 20th Campionato Esportiva in Mattijana. In this batch of qualifiers, Super Llamaland managed to finish in a strong 2nd place position, losing only one match apiece to The Isles of Avon, Darmen, and San Jose Guayabal.

Qasden vs. Super-Llamaland, the Clash of the Cats

The SLL FA is now multiversally ranked 20th, a mere 9 ranks above the Qads. Their manager, Curtis Steeling, has been in the business long enough to intimidate even the most passionate Qad fans. At a conference earlier this week in T.V. City, manager, Zachary Sols, and head coach, Jon Merritt, were seen expressing their optimistic concerns. "What we know about the Super Llamaland squad so far is that they are not like New Jarwel or Bojikstan or even Spaam. Steeling knows how to get his players out on the field and perform stellar at competitions. They may be the lowest ranked of our trio of group stage opponents, but they are still regarded as a major threat to the Vans and to the Principality of Qasden. We will train day and night if we have to in order to strive in Cenial, so to all those big guys out there who have been playing in the World Cup: we are certainly coming for you. The underdogs will win this tournament, and those dogs will be in the form of the Vans.".

The matchup is to be contested at the Shadow B'Betsy Stadium in Cenial, the first WC site for our joyful little Qads. Will we be able to take down the Llamas in Tiger print? Will we fall flat before even lifting? Stay tuned, stay updated, and stay alert for our next report, live from the bustling streets of Cenial, Ceni!!

World Cup approaching! Courier projects Cosumar's 23 by position

On Thursday, the Fiefdom Soccer Federation (FSF) will announce the final 23 players that Alexander Pearce has selected for World Cup training camp in Drawkland next week. 17 players will be cut from the 40-player pool that we saw throughout Qualifying - possibly more if there are any surprise inclusions from outside those 40.

All of these players have had chances to impress the gaffer and Cosumar at large over the last several months throughout Qualifying. The big final cut is always a topic of much debate and intrigue. With as deep as Cosumar's pool as become, pretty much all of the 40 have had at least a couple moments in which they made an impression and a case for their inclusion. Each player offers something a little different. Unfortunately, the World Cup is the pinnacle of every players' professional dreams and ambitions for a reason - and tough decisions must be made.

Alexander Pearce likely already has a pretty good idea of who he will take to Drawkland, but there are always those last few roster places that go down to the wire as the manager tries to concoct the perfect balance of skill sets. Injury and form can also flip a few places at the last minute. On top of that, Pearce has preached competition time and time again of late, so all 40 involved this year (and possibly more) conceivably have a shot to work their way in.

With that in mind, let's review how each position group took shape in Qualifying and build our projected 23.

Goalkeeper (4 Image 2)

GK Jakk Winterfyll 36m	Kingsgrove [BRE] 13 games, 15 goals allowed
GK Cormak Lethbridge 32m Coret Hawks [NPH] 4 games, 2 goals allowed
GK Shjegrzh Na’Kefir 24m Handon United [SCT] 2 games, 0 goals allowed
GK Hansi Weschler 23m Crawford City FC [COS] 1 game, 1 goal allowed

There's very little to this one. Jakk Winterfyll is Cosumar's starting goalkeeper at World Cup 79. Read not into the better goals per game ratios of the other three goalkeepers. They all played well, certainly, but the sample size is small. It's not enough to dethrone one of Cosumar's greatest-ever players as he pushes closer to the all-time caps record. Do read into the fact that Jakk took all the harder opponents in Qualifying and still came out with a fairly good 1.15 goals per game.

The real battle is for which goalkeeper will nab the back-up spot. You can toss Weschler out. The kid has a future, but he isn't ready yet. It's telling that his only appearance came in the last match. After we had already secured qualification. Between the other two, recently-married Lethbridge appears to have the inside track. Pearce used him more in Qualifying and he had some of the best Dragonshirt appearances of his career. However, Shjegrzh Na’Kefir's clean sheets against Jeckland and Olastor and resplendent club form of late may swing the tide in his favor. Pearce may also want a young keeper to gain some invaluable World Cup experience with Winterfyll nearing the end of his time. That said, we think Pearce will play it safe and go with the guy he would trust most to step in and play a mistake-free game in an emergency. Na'Kefir doesn't have a single away cap yet. We project Jakk Winterfyll and Cormak Lethbridge to the World Cup 79 roster.

A potential wildcard is Balbulus Grimwade, who was surprisingly left out of the Qualifying pool after winning AOCAF LIV as the starter during Winterfyll's sabbatical. Might he factor back in due to his tournament-winning experience?

Left Back (3 Image 2)

LB	Bacary Na’Kale 27m	Mâ Âlâmëómë [FFD] 14 games, 4 assists
LB Alexis Brill 26f Violence Chariots [NPH] 5 games, 2 assists
LB Berk Lechjakr 23m Ausharmuj Marusi [FFD] 3 games

Fairly straightforward. Similar to the above, you have one of Cosumar's best-ever players locking up the first of the two spots. Bacary Na'Kale is probably the very first name Pearce wrote on his team sheet. The Vloo is a coach's dream with his ability to consistently contribute offensive production from left back and versatility to defend centrally as well. It was always going to be Brill vs. Lechjakr for that second spot. With her performances in Qualifying, Alexis Brill won the battle as she was expected to. The Chariots wingback connected well with the attacking players, racking up two assists and many other positive plays in the final third, and was solid tracking back as well. Cosumar allowed only one goal while she was on the pitch. Berk Lechjakr is developing well in Farfadillis and has a great attitude, but he'll have a hard time breaking into this group for the next few years. We project Bacary Na'Kale and Alexis Brill to the World Cup 79 roster.

Center Back (6 Image 3)

CB Peter Svensson 31m	AFC Treason [NPH] 15 games
CB Kurt Wolff 24m Real Azuris [COS] 9 games
CB Torbjörn Jorgensen 28m SC Rinaldi [VAL] 4 games
CB Deirdre McNessa 32f Starling [NPH] 8 games
CB Corella da Silva 27f Raynor City United [VAL] 5 games
CB Taddeo Loredan 31m Starling [NPH] 3 games

On paper, Peter Svensson and Kurt Wolff are the obvious first-choice pairing in central defense. Svensson is the captain and most experienced, while Wolff is in immense form and was the only defensive finalist for Boldsport Galactico of the Cycle. However, being the best individual defenders doesn't mean they're necessarily the best tandem. That may be why Pearce experiment so much with his CB combinations throughout Qualifying. Coincidentally, Svensson-Wolff was the combination that allowed the most goals. Both strongmen will surely make the team, but Pearce may opt for the tried-and-true pairing of Svensson and Deirdre McNessa come MD1. The stability of the longtime tandem is an option he will at least want to have available. Torbjörn Jorgensen, Taddeo Loredan and particularly Corella da Silva showed well in their chances, but didn't quite do enough to unseat that core trio. Therefore, we project Peter Svensson, Kurt Wolff and Deirdre McNessa to the World Cup 79 roster.

If that seems light, keep in mind that fullbacks Na'Kale and Chisenhall can also play centrally, giving Pearce options to cover. He'll probably want that spot to squeeze in another forward or midfield option. However, if he does decide to take an extra center back, Jorgensen or da Silva could sneak in due to their athleticism. Or maybe even someone like Willem Maersk from Stoneshore - uncapped but one of the most athletic young defenders around. Loredan is a consummate professional and a good guy to have around in Qualifying, but doesn't have much of a shot at the final 23 since he's basically a slightly less good version of McNessa.

Right Back (3 Image 2)

RB	Mortimer Chisenhall	29m	Real Azuris [COS] 11 games
RB Tevreness Bale 24m Tanrısal [PAS] 4 games
RB Tug Cooper 25m Arrowsmith [EUR] 6 games, 1 goal

Finally, a group with no runaway winner(s). These guys are pretty even. You have to think Real Azuris captain Chisenhall is in simply because Pearce used him more in Qualifying. He's also the best pure defender of the three, offering one-on-one poise Bale and Cooper lack. Despite their contrasting physiques (Bale with his lean frame and long stride, Cooper a short but powerfully-built workhorse) the other two are both more attacking options, so the second spot will likely come down to one of them. Bale has been in better form of late in Pasarga, but Pearce may be wooed by Cooper's previous World Cup experience and newfound ability to also play defensive midfield after that successful experiment against St. Saratoga. From outside the Qualifying pool, Samaj right back Astrid Palmqvist is in-form and also has the potential to factor into Pearce's thinking. That said, we project Mortimer Chisenhall and Tug Cooper to the World Cup 79 roster.

Defensive Midfield (2 Image 1)

DM	Peter Marshall 28m	Crawford City FC [COS] 5 games
DM Ivan Hemeyer 24m Diamondqueen [NPH] 3 games

The role of the pure DM on this roster is simply that of a late substitute to kill things off when the game is won. And since we already have Tug Cooper on our roster as cover, we definitely don't need both of the designated defensive midfielders used in Qualifying. So... which was better? Tough to say definitively given their limited minutes, but we give the edge to Peter Marshall. He was massive in that crucial penultimate matchday against Free Republics after coming on in the 76th minute, helping the Vanquishers hang on to the lead and qualify. That probably punched his ticket. He also started one match, which Hemeyer was never given the opportunity to do, and performed well in a tough away environment. With his upside, Ivan has a future with Pearce's team if he continues to make a name for himself in Nephara, but Marshall is simply the more complete (and disciplined) player at this point in time, especially coming off the best club season of his career.

Central Midfield (5 Image 3)

CM	Stig Söderquist 27m	Brinemouth [NPH] 15 games, 1 assist
CM Tiffany Elam 30f Ibini FC [VAL] 5 games, 1 assist
CM Warren Royannais 28m Longgeylin Coast [VIL] 6 games
CM Denton Tapp 29m CA Paulinthal [PAS] 5 games, 1 assist
CM Robard Horvat 28m Lammerton [SCT] 3 games

Even though it's one of Cosumar (relatively) weaker positions, central midfield may be the toughest for Pearce to sort out because he is going to want options to play two, three or four different ways he thinks they might need in Drawkland. With just three spots to work with. Stig Söderquist is the only lock, a tidy and composed technician who can morph his game to be more defensive or offensive as the game dictates. He played nearly every match of Qualifying. He was brilliant in the first leg, and though he had some ups and downs in the second leg (corresponding with the team's ups and downs), one still gets the sense that Stig is the only center mid that Pearce truly trusts. Elam has the most pedigree of the other four, though her game may be too similar to Stig's to use another spot on. But she's reliable and brings always-valued defensive work rate, so don't be surprised to see her penciled in as Stig's like-for-like back-up. Horvat is another player in that mold but never really made an impression in Qualifying, so you can cross him out.

Royannais and Tapp are both options with a bit more attacking flair and creative nous up their sleeve. Both are comfortable in possession and good passers with range, if a bit one-footed. Royannais has a pace advantage and nice free kicks but Tapp has the advantage when it comes to size and defensive presence (especially aerially). At least one of them figures to make the team. Royannais enjoyed several strong performances earlier in Qualifying and seemed to be nailing down a spot but fell out of favor a bit towards the end, whereas Tapp made a late push with his two best performances coming in MD15 and MD18. It's really anyone's guess between the two. Maybe both make it if Elam doesn't. If Pearce is unsatisfied by what he saw from these players in Qualifying, he could look outside the 40-man pool to someone like Eastweald's Mina Mordini, who is somehow still uncapped despite her remarkable technical ability. There are also some young midfielders like Naldaboa in Valanora and Harald Fireblade in Bonesea that have been getting buzz on the Cosumarites Abroad blogs lately. With his size, athleticism and two-way ability, Fireblade almost seems like a higher-potential version of Tapp. And that's saying somrthing. It's unlikely that Pearce takes a gamble on him now though with CM spots so few and precious. We project Stig Söderquist, Warren Royannais and Denton Tapp to the World Cup 79 roster.

Left Midfield (4 Image 2)

LM	Bellerophon Serafino	27m	Cassandra City [COS] 13 games, 4 goals, 4 assists
LM Tamer Yilmaz 29m Marinos Metropolis [VLD] 4 games, 1 goal, 1 assist
LM Mauricio Sigler 33m Holdenberg [EUR] 6 games, 3 goals
LM Lorelei Neptune 23f Bishop [NPH] 4 games, 1 goal

Oof. This might be the toughest position group to call. All four of these players took center stage and shined at various points this year. Neptune's direct, Nepharim style caught eyeballs and yielded a winner against Osarius on MD2 that set the tone for the rest of Qualifying. Serafino with his heroic efforts home and away against Barunia that cracked their staunch defense. Yilmaz had a scintillating MoTM performance against plucky Nekodemus. And 'ole Mau Sigler struck thrice late off the bench...including the most critical goal of the tournament so far against Free Republics.

Serafino is one of "Pearce's guys" and has been one of Cosumar's most important players thus far in the manager's successful tenure, able to be deployed across the midfield with athleticism and work rate second to none. He's in. That leaves one spot for talisman Sigler, emerging fan-favorite Neptune and a Tamer Yilmaz in the peak form of his career. Sigler has such a history of rising to the occasion under the lights of the World Cup stage that it's almost impossible to leave him home. With his veteran savvy, ability with both feet and diverse arsenal of attacking skills, he can also play on the opposite wing, up top or at CAM. Yilmaz and Neptune are both solely left wingers. But Pearce may feel he needs one of those since Serafino is less a true winger and more a "midfielder who usually plays on the left". It's quite possible that Pearce could skimp elsewhere to fit Yilmaz or Neptune in the squad. One option is to take just one CAM (probably Sibučić) since Sigler can provide dual back-up. But for now, we project Bellerophon Serafino and Mauricio Sigler to the World Cup 79 roster.

Right Midfield (3 Image 2)

RM	Bryger Tidesson 21m	Real Azuris [COS] 15 games, 6 goals, 7 assists
RM Kit Kvanderwyk 31m Cornellians [SCT] 11 games
RM Corey Simmons III 28m OAS Royal FC [COS] 4 games

The newest Young Galactico made himself indispensable in his first Qualifying campaign, leading all Cosumarites in assists. I mean, just look at those stats. Alexander Pearce is going to want Tidesson and his hand-placed crosses on the pitch at all times, so (*knock on wood*) it almost doesn't matter who is chosen as the second right winger in Drawkland. Kit Kvanderwyk is more proven than Simmons III at the international level and is a Pearce favorite, so he probably gets the nod even though he hasn't been particularly effective as of late. Simmons missed a big opportunity to really assert himself and overtake the Cornellians star. We project Bryger Tidesson and Kit Kvanderwyk to the World Cup 79 roster.

Central Attacking Midfield (3 Image 2)

AM	Isla Sibučić 21f	Cornellians [SCT] 13 games, 3 goals, 1 assist
AM Alora Heher 28f Rozelle [BRE] 9 games, 2 assists
AM Rowan Varghese 29f Tihon [CMT] 4 games, 1 assist

Sibučić is too talented to consider leaving off the sheet, even if the youngster finally showed that she's human with some learning curve moments popping up during her first Qualifying. If it was a competition between Heher and Varghese for a second #10 spot alongside Sibučić, Heher definitely won. Varghese wasn't bad in her four caps, but aside from the 6-1 win over Isula Reale, she didn't consistently make an impact in the games. Heher could've done better with end product, but she made her presence felt each time she was on the pitch. She had an excellent run of starts early in Qualifying before Pearce felt Sibučić was ready to take the reins more. Unless Pearce ends up going light here because of Sigler's versatility, we project Isla Sibučić and Alora Heher to the World Cup 79 roster.

Striker (7 Image 4)

ST	Romikk Valgard 26m	Ulsa [EUR] 16 games, 8 goals, 2 assists
ST Ragnar Targaryen 27m CA Paulinthal [PAS] 9 games, 6 goals, 3 assists
ST Vega Zeale-Riddick 23f Samaj FC [COS] 6 games, 1 goal, 2 assists
ST Airik Ruhl 25m Chenoworth Harriers [NPH] 8 games, 3 goals, 2 assists
ST Elena Culbreth 29f Kingsgrove [BRE] 1 game, 1 assist
ST Kevin Stabb 31m Crawford City FC [COS] 3 games, 1 goal
ST Kathryn Kvanderwyk 28f Cornellians [SCT] 2 games, 1 goal

What a glorious, glorious mess THIS is. There are nations ranked higher than Cosumar that would kill to borrow a few of the strikers that Pearce will be forced to cut. Let's get the locks out of the way first. Romikk Valgard. Leaned upon heavily in Qualifying and repaid Pearce's faith with a goal every-other game. Ragnar Targaryen. The freaking Boldsport Galactico of the Cycle and in the form of his life. Unless Pearce analyzes Turori and uncovers what he thinks will be a weakness to a particular player, they will be Cosumar's starting strike partnership come MD1.

But striker is a position where you need a diverse collective to threaten different defenses in different ways. Neither Valgard nor Targaryen are particularly strong in the air, so Pearce is sure to include at least one of godman Airik Ruhl or toweing Vega Zeale-Riddick as the token target striker for when the tactics shift towards a more direct style. Ruhl has been the more impactful player in Qualifying, but caused dressing room turmoil in the last World Cup. VZR, on the other hand, still has some goodwill stored up from her big role in the AOCAF championship last year. If Pearce only takes one of them, the final seat on the plane will come down to the other three (Stabb, Culbreth and Kvanderwyk). They each had limited opportunities in Qualifying but made the most of them. Remember Culbreth's cheeky rabona assist versus Olastor? Anyways, Stabb offers ruthless close-range finishing and World Cup-winning experience. Culbreth is smart and a true sniper. While Kvanderwyk brings energy and endless pressure. Club form isn't much of a tiebreaker because every striker on this list has been resplendent. This puzzle is a tough nut to crack, but I think Pearce will prefer Kvanderwyk out of that group of three. Pace is so very valuable in the World Cup. So are her intangibles such as fearlessness, defensive effort and ability to shift to the wing in a pinch. And, well, there's their obvious history at Cornellians. Pearce is the one who unearthed Kathryn. He believed in her from the beginning - can't blame him if he believes in her now too.

That said, do remember this sentence: "If Pearce only takes one of Ruhl or VZR, the final seat on the plane will come down to the other three (Stabb, Culbreth and Kvanderwyk)". He could take both Ruhl and Vega and NONE of the other three. Ergo, no Kvanderwyk. I think Ruhl earned his place, so that essentially makes it Zeale-Riddick vs. Kvanderwyk for the final spot. The HL Golden Boot winner vs. the SPL Golden Boot winner. This is a coin flip. Your guess is as good as mine. My hunch is that the latter has the edge for now simply because her attributes better fill the gaps left by the other three and make a more well-rounded group. We project Ragnar Targaryen, Romikk Valgard, Airik Ruhl and Kathryn Kvanderwyk to the World Cup 79 roster. VZR could sneak in as a fifth forward if Pearce goes light elsewhere.

South Covello World Cup 79 Preview

South Covello, as you all know by now, has qualified for their first World Cup as a free nation, and has been drawn into Group C. There, they will face Tumbra, a formidable opponent, Schottia, the number one team in the Multiverse, and, of course, Eshan, home of President Revan, the man who John Green and South Covello view as an enemy to freedom all around the Multiverse. Only time will tell if Revan becomes a dictator like some claim he will, but given the political situation between the two nations, that is sure to be an interesting matchup. Tumbra, as we said, is also a formidable opponent out of Pot 3, ranked number 21 in the rankings, and, of course, there's number one Schottia. So it's going to be a tough road to the knockout stages. Let's look at a preview.

Game 1 - South Covello vs. Eshan: The Rebels will take on Eshan in the first game, in what is sure to be fueled by political rivalry. Or maybe not. Perhaps the players just want peace and friendship and are willing to put political differences aside. We don't want any crushings like there were back in the dark days. Can we please just move on and not worry about Revan and John and all these feuds and just enjoy the game? Hopefully the Rebels pull off the win, and with the Echanis being the weakest team in the group, they really should. Our prediction is that the Rebels win 2-0, and move on to the last two games in a good position to move on to the next round.

Game 2 - South Covello vs. Tumbra: Now facing the third-best team in this group, Tumbra, the Rebels could have a chance to qualify for the Knockout Stage right here, and right now. If Schottia wins its first two games, which we think it will, then a Rebel win here would put both them and the Schottians in the knockout stage, with the final game to determine who wins the group. Tumbra finished second in Group 12 in qualifying, one point behind Farfadillis, with 46 total. Their offense finished with 54 goals, exactly three per game, which should make an interesting matchup against a South Covello defense that let in three goals during all of qualifying combined. Of course, Eshan scored 54 goals in qualifying too, so it's really a bizarre coincidence that the number three keeps popping up here. We think the Rebel defense will hold strong again, but Tumbra has a better defense than Eshan and will only let in one goal. Rebels win 1-0, and advance with a game to spare, meaning they can relax a bit against Schottia, playing with nothing to lose.

Game 3: Schottia vs. South Covello: Now, here comes one of the toughest matchups in the history of this team, definitely the toughest if you don't count the Gregist days. The Rebels will face the number one team in the entire Multiverse, in Schottia. The Schottians went undefeated in qualifying, and only managed one draw. So they went 17-1-0. They outscored their opponents 64-15. This one's going to be a tough game for South Covello. The good news is they have nothing to lose, but at the same time, we really don't think this will be enough. The defense holds strong for most of the game, but the Schottian offense is just too good and gets one in late. The Rebels lose, 1-0, allowing just their fourth goal in 21 games, but still manage to advance to the next round.

Knockout Stage:

As the second place team in Group C, the Rebels will face the winner of Group B, which includes The Holy Empire, San Jose Guayabal, Damukuni, and Mriin. San Jose Guayabal is #7 in the world, but struggled in qualifying. They won their group, but finished just one point clear of third-place Darmen. So they were lucky to qualify. Meanwhile, The Holy Empire breezed through qualifying, going 15-1-2, with 58 goals scored and 31 allowed. We think the Ninja Pirate Robot Zombies, or whatever weird kind of team they're fielding this year, will win the group and face the Rebels in the Round of 16. As for that matchup, we think the Rebels will put up a good fight, possibly sending the game to extra time or even a penalty shootout, but the Frosties will just be too tough for them, as they will fall 1-0 once again and be eliminated.

To show how important winning the group is, we project Damukuni will come in second in Group B, meaning if the Rebels manage to beat Schottia (or possibly if there's a draw) they will get the nation they formerly called "Dumbokuni" instead. We project that they would win that matchup 2-0 and advance to the Quarterfinals. In such a quarterfinal, we would project them facing Vilita, who we have beating our Cocoabo friends of Turori in the Round of 16. They would not beat Vilita, but even making the quarterfinals would be a bigger accomplishment than the Round of 16 for this squad, who is in their last hurrah before turning things over to the next generation of South Covellans, the true rebels who fought for their freedom against the Gregists rather than playing soccer.

No matter what happens, it's sure to be a memorable tournament for everyone involved.

POKÉCARDS
Pokécards XD - Assessment and Hiatus

The Hinodejin Empire's process of taking over several aspects of Sunrisian culture saw good and bad things all across the land, although none can claim better results than old Sunrisian top manga export Pokécards, having since moved from defunct Snowflake Games to a joint venture by IGACO Games and Megastar Printing House.

While no transition has ever been perfect, these two companies have shown a lot of effort towards bringing the franchise to the public eye again after a fairly brief stint dormant. "We knew it was a huge ask from the start." said lead writer Soma Ryuzei. Mister Soma, together with several artists had to spend at least two months going through the old Pokécard material. "The series was fairly good, probably the best thing we've seen from our relatives from the past. Maybe the biggest problem with the franchise was that it relied on the team's World Cup success. Sunrise losing to a trainer with no build did hurt the series' finale, though it was understandable as the actual result did happen."

That said, the production hasn't been without its' share of problems. "Vilitan readers specifically mentioned the lack of vibrant colours, requesting we returned to the past, where blinding combinations were what made some characters stand out. It was a series that made full use of visual impact, but we decided to go with something a bit more text-focused instead," said Ryuzei, continuing after dodging a pile of papers crumbling down, "That said, the fan mail we've gotten has been fairly astronomical."

"Personally, I think the hardest bit has been keeping up with regular political affairs," said Director of Continuity Yui Kisame. True to her words, two nations (Valanora and the former Gregoryisgodistan) suffered changes throughout the qualifiers and that did certainly cause some commotion as the game did have to include changes on the fly. Current character South Covello still looks an awful lot like the old version used in previous Pokécards material, although IGACO game devs have been working hard towards creating a new character to represent this new version of the country, very much like the Asakawa Twins and Sunrise. "In one hand, what happened in Valanora didn't affect things for other nations that much, but it does mess up our text hard. The South Covello situation was the other way around: nations clearly have been affected by this but the story didn't really call for that character to show up at any point. Hell, he only appeared in season two once or twice."

There have also been complaints about one particular portion of the cast. "We're Hinodejin. We're not used to whatever happens outside and we've been trying hard to do so but... Just look at them." Art designer Mia Kurosawa pointed to sketches of Eura and Nephara. "As far as we are aware, Rushmore is that place that is at war for some reason. The weird thing isn't even that they're dressed like that or that they have a war group. It's just..."
She sighed. "People think we're going to have them be a couple, which isn't really what we have planned at all!" She closed her mouth. "Oh, damn. Almost spoilered stuff there!"

On the other side of things, however, the usual Chromatik portion of the fandom has been growing somewhat. "Chrom has been a popular character in the series for a long time, developing each season." a proud Yui Kisame noted. "We wanted to make sure that the four main students from St. Margot manage to reach that same level of development since they all appeared on different points of the series and, with the exception of Qasden, have a lot of ground to go over. Flardania possibly being the easier one to work with since we already have seen some solid fan material."

According to Soma Ryuzei, interaction with fans has been pretty good overall, regardless of minor hiccups. "It's a solid fanbase that I'm very thankful to be working with. I do wish we're able to expand and bring other cultures into the mix. Pokécards was meant to be a little token of appreciation towards Sunrisian participation at a tournament based on all sorts of cultures catching up to each other and our new Pokécards have even added from other versions of these tokens, such as the old fighting game SnoGa released and the classic Radio Esportiva material that some might not look at it with the same love, but we do like them all."

Gameside, things haven't really seen major issues. "We've handled the Pokécards MMORPG like almost all of our properties," said IGACO President Mamoru Ishika. "In honour of the older game that we inherited, we've been actively trying to avoid asking for money through DLC and Black Raven Technology has been overlooking an Atlantian Oceania based server for our fans that happen to live over there. Currently, we're researching the Rushmore region for another server there as well."

He also had a lot to mention about their interaction with the printing house, "It's quite an honour to work with such an esteemed institution such as Megastar. I think the best part of it, however, was that they have been acting fairly humble over this entire deal. We've helped them with several filler arcs and you might be able to see a couple of characters that have yet to appear on the series, yet are already available for you to take NPC quests from them or even play as them at the Champions' Mode. Our next expansion would be geared towards fans from the region of India, although we're not quite sure if the costumes we have in mind are... well, fitting for their culture."

Megastar Printing House president Nina Ishimura however, announced that new chapters of the series would be delayed for after the end of the World Cup. "We do promise to reach an end to the current storyline at least during whatever regional tournament the Hinodejin Empire is eligible for, but currently our house needs a massive vacation. A massive load of materials that have been pretty much secluded to Hinodejin audiences due to being... well... filler will be sold at a cheaper price for fans to at least have something to check during off time. We apologize immensely."

WORLD CUP 79
Poltergeist Experiment deemed succesful by Imperial Hinodejin FA

Sacheverell Van Cann's Poltergeists have squeezed through the qualifiers when it mattered the most and the team managed to pack their bags to the World Cup. This alone was enough to see Queen Taki Asakawa consider it a respectable performance for a team that wasn't exactly expected to make waves. "We've entered as a surprise side, in all honesty. The team doesn't have that Sunrisian look, most people don't even make the connection unless pointed out hard," noted Sunrisian journalist Justin Robertson, still off-seas.

"Look, they clearly need me," said legendary Slembanan player Val Kylx. "I mean, true, they could use some of the wild spirits that the Sunrisians had. The dribbling, the dazzling, the balls to the wall football that just seemed too bonkers to work and then it went and did. They need to create things like they used to. Maybe touching this realm more often might put them back on track."

A poor start with several young players that have recently moved out of the country didn't show a lot of promise, some of them soon fading out of the squad as a result but the final selection for the World Cup does feature several young players. Cherry Whitecastle emerged as the surprise player of the team, the Satyr currently playing for Proudcastle out of Brenecia should prove deadly if allowed to dazzle. "She feels Sunrisian, that's for sure," noted Kylx.

The starter XI for the Hinodejin Empire's first ever World Cup game under their current name will feature the following players: M. Mitano; T. Shimikage, K. Simishi, K. Inoue, V. Eiji; Y. Maki, M. Kyon, C. Whitecastle, A. Souji, T. Sasaki; Sang Kyung-Ja. Sasaki will act as captain.

Rebels Unveil New Kits for World Cup
by Luke Paul, UniWatching.sc

Image

The South Covello national soccer team has unveiled new kits for the World Cup 79, to be worn beginning with the opening match against Eshan. The kits reflect the colors of the South Covello flag, rather than the colors of the Gregist flag, and have been promoted as "New kits for a new generation." However, this old generation of soccer players will wear the kits for at least three games, more if the Rebels manage to advance to the knockout stage. The kits were produced by No Nonsense Sportswear out of Filindo, and will feature the company's characteristic "NN" logo on the top left, and the flag of South Covello in the top right.

The home kit features sky blue and gold horizontal stripes, representing two of the three colors of the South Covellan flag, with the third color, red, represented in the numbers. The collar of the home kit is a somewhat unusual style, as it appears to drop down below, and is presumably button up. However, as we have only seen concepts of the kits at this time and have not seen physical kits, it remains to be seen if this is actually the case or if it is a faux collar. Regardless, this is an interesting feature you don't see every day, and seems like a throwback to earlier times. Interestingly, the underarm piping on the home kit is all yellow, and the cyan stripes terminate there, which should seem to settle the question as to whether these kits are yellow with cyan stripes or cyan with yellow stripes. This underarm piping seems to be a trend nowadays, with more and more teams featuring them on their uniforms and kits.

The away kit is more straightforward, a solid red with cyan numbers. Gold is still represented in the underarm piping, as well as the trim on the collar. The sleeves also feature cyan and gold trim on the end, which is an interesting feature not seen on the home kit. However, it does feature a subtle diamond watermark on the lower two-thirds of the kit, which is easy to miss if you're not paying attention. Some feel these watermarks add character to kits, while others feel they are distracting and annoying. I'm personally indifferent on it, but feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.

The goalkeeper kit, by comparison, which is to be worn by South Covello's historically strong goalkeepers, is extremely simple. Solid black, with white numbers, and the same diamond watermark as the away kit. The sleeves also have the same cyan and gold trim, and the collar has the gold trim as well. The diamond watermark is even harder to make out against the black than it is against the red, but it's there.

One really weird feature is that if you look really closely, both the away and goalkeeper kits have some random gold square at the bottom near the sides. This would not be unusual if the piping ran all the way down, but it appears it doesn't. The home kits also appear to have it, but it's only apparent when the bottom stripe is cyan rather than gold. This gold doohickey seems rather out of place, but I don't think many people are going to notice.

In any case, South Covellans should be excited to finally have their own kits rather than wearing the colors of the Gregist regime. It was truly bizarre that they continued to do that throughout World Cup Qualifying, though at least they ripped out the flag patches and replaced it with their own, first the temporary South Covello flag and then the permanent one. It was obvious the stitching on those was homemade though, and these should be more professionally done.

The World Cup will get underway from Ceni and Drawkland in just a short while, with the Rebels taking on Eshan, Tumbra, and Schottia in the group stage.

The Cocoabo have Done It!
Citizens held by Tinhampton as Cocoabo Flock migrate to Drawkland

For a more complete backstory regarding Cocoabo Forest please visit the Historical Record on the Atlantian Oceania Forum

A Lonely Stadium, A Quiet Town, Tinhampton :: While there wasn't much for the Turori National team to play for on the day as far as World Cup Qualification went - the Turori Eels had already assured their place in the World Cup 79 finals in Ceni and Drawkland, there was a lot on the line for the Citizen squad who came in 3 points behind the Cocoabo in the head to head table to determine which squad would represent the Turori National Team in post World Cup 79 Qualification competition - ie: The World Cup Finals.
Citizen Team Schedule:
[W] MD2 @ Omerica
[L] MD4 @ Kernovi
[W] MD5 v Yesopalitha (Eels Park, Eelandii)
[W] MD6 @ Kaboomlandia
[D] MD8 @ West Violence
[D] MD10 @ Valanora
[W] MD12 @ U-62
[W] MD16 @ New Danican
[D] MD18 @ Tinhampton
Cocoabo Team Schedule:
[L] MD1 v. Valanora (Cednia Beach Center, Cednia)
[D] MD3 v. U-62 (Almintora National Stadium, Almintora)
[W] MD7 v. New Danican (Cocoabo Park Arena, Cocoabo Forest)
[W] MD9 v. Tinhampton (Cocoabo Park Arena, Cocoabo Forest)
[W] MD11 v. Omerica (Cocoabo Park Arena, Cocoabo Forest)
[W] MD13 v. Kernovi (Iobabao Legendary Park, Mliona)
[W] MD14 @ Yesopalitha
[W] MD15 v. Kaboomlandia (Kionao Minor Field, Kionao)
[D] MD17 v. West Violence (Coliseum of the Inurahtii, Inura)

Just one campaign prior it was the Citizen Squad who had narrowly bested the Cocoabo by three points to finish atop the head to head table by a 20-17 scoreline. The Citizen Squad punched their ticket to Cosumar and Bonesea while the Cocoabo Squad was shipped off to represent the Cocoabo Forest in the XII Summer Olympic Games.

It didn't take long for that decision to be questioned. While they had earned the right to represent the Turori National Team, the Citizen Squad's trip to Cosumar did not go well at all. During their opening match against regional rivals Farfadillis the Citizen Squad laid an egg of their own barely collecting a consolation goal in what was otherwise a solid drubbing by the Farfameleons who took a 3-1 victory and ultimately a place in the knockout round. The next match was supposed to be the easy one for the Citizen Squad, squaring off against a lowly Drawkland side that were just happy to be in Cosumar. Once again, however, the Citizen Squad were not up to the task and the 0-1 defeat all but eliminated the Turori National Team from World Cup 78. Ironically, the Citizen's would pick up a consolation win on the final matchday against Eura, the very team that would go on to Eliminate Vilita on penalty kicks at the Quarter-Final stage. The 3-2 victory for the Citizens wasn't enough and they crashed out of the competition. They got back to Turori in plenty of time to watch their national team-sharing rivals the Cocoabo Squad tear up the pitch in Vekaiyu, romping through the pack including World #1 ranked Schottia to make it all the way to the Olympic Games Gold Medal match where they ultimately lost in a narrow contest to Darmen.

The dissapointment of a group stage exit from the World Cup by the Citizen Squad followed by a medal-winning effort from the Cocoabo Squad at the olympic games resulted in many supporters calling for the Cocoabo to be ordained as the rightful representatives of the Turori National Team during the entire World Cup 79 campaign.

Of course, supportership of the Cocoabo was constantly on the rise as the movement sparked by the Cocoabo Preservation Society and taken into the spotlight by a little club from Kionao stunning the pack and winning the UICA Series B Champions Cup title had now turned into not only a massive preservation campaign but a marketing tool as well.

While the primary focus of the AORDO entrusted and Tropicorp developed Cocoaobo Forest is the study and preservation of the Cocoabo way of life, Cocoabo Park was also developed as an educational tourist attraction in a resort like environment where Citizens from the multiverse could come and learn about the Cocoabo. The Cocoabo brand has also made international inroads particularly the Cocoa-bo brand of delectables and the recently established CoCoCo that has set up infrastructure and agreements to position itself as a major supplier of just about every common good and service in the newly established South Covello.

The Football Association of Turori, however, wasn't necessarily going to just give in to popular opinion. The on-field competition was not only a marketing and ratings success in the Island Emirate but Citizen v. Cocoabo was also a fair, competitive way to determine the National Team's representatives in the eyes of the FAT.

Through 9 of 9 Rounds:
Image ImageImage
Image ImageImage
The closeness of the competition the previous campaign drove match ratings up even for otherwise insignificant matches against lowly opposition and there was no reason to change course.

Through 8 of 9 rounds - 16 matches in total, the Cocoabo had a 2 point lead on the Citizens - mainly due to the Citizen's unexpected defeat to an unimpressive Kernovi side on matchday 4. Going into their final match of the campaign at the Coliseum of the Inurahtii in the Inura Forest, the Cocoabo Squad would have been informed that a victory over West Violence would ensure they would claim the right to represent the Turori National Team in post World Cup 79 Qualification competition. Any other result would leave the door open for the Citizens to once again steal the slot.

Unfortunately for the Cocoabo and their legions of supporters, they could not break through and while they had posted a Turori National Team record 7th consecutive shutout, they also failed to score a goal for the first time since the Citizens were also held 0-0 by West Violence earlier in the campaign.

That put the scoreline at 20-17 in favor of the Cocoabo - the exact same scoreline that the Citizen Squad had defeated the Cocoabo Squad during the World Cup 78 Qualifying campaign. The difference was that the Citizen's still had one game to go. Away to Tinhampton. The Cocoabo Squad had no problem with Tinhampton coming away with a 3-1 victory. If the Citizen's could match that result it would be them, and not the Cocoabo that would be headed to Drawkland and Ceni.

They couldn't do it. Through 90 agonizing minutes of stalwart defense and wimpering attack, neither side had broken through. The 0-0 result only notched a single point for the Citizen Squad and the final table ended with the Cocoabo on 20 points and the Citizens on 18. The Cocoabo were heading to the World Cup Finals.

The defence begins

It seems winning the World Cup did have an effect on our qualification hopes after all: the expectations of a dour qualification run just like many of our previous cycles didn't come to pass, and Electrum joins a few esteemed nations such as Valanora, Tumbra, Schottia and South Covello in having zero losses at all during qualification. Electrum's early draw against Sargossa would be the only blip on the radar for an otherwise stellar and perfect qualification, which if this author is to be believed, bodes well for Electrum's chances in defending their title. The Electrumite team is brimming with experience, and with the ever-increasing quality of competition in the Terranean Leagues, our players are gaining more experience against quality opposition too (especially with Oscuran teams in the mix).

For the Electrumites, they now play all of their group stage matches in the Avon Isles, a place known more by Electrumites as an idyllic holiday spot rather than a sports mecca. Mores specifically, they have been scheduled to play all of their matches at the Gateway Stadium in Stratosphere City. Because of the familiarity of most Electrumites to the location, as well as the fact that the national team has trained there in the past (high altitude training at some of the craggy mountain ranges), this gives Electrum a slim upper-hand. Furthermore, the ageing co-vice-captain of Electrum, Jake Ingram, has had plenty of experience playing in Gateway, given the fact he's played for the Eastern COTEFA team of Sporting Cenial. Clark will definitely be trying to tap into that knowledge to extract this slight and minuscule advantage. That being said, there are three teams that Electrum needs to play in order to advance to the knockout stages of the World Cup: Starblaydia, Nephara and Ethane.

Ethane are our first opponents, and have certainly improved in form over the past few months during qualification. After receiving two early losses to Dainer and Cassadaigua in the first half of competition, they stormed home with a perfect 9-0-0 record in the second half to book a place in the World Cup. Their shaky start, ascribed to the underwhelming performance of strikers such as Jaurequi and Mitchell, the lynchpin of new manager Comi's offensive strategy, led the team astray. However, Comi was able to get over the teething concerns of the players, who were used to playing rather passively (thanks to the actions of past manager Curtis Steeling), and propelled the team forward, scoring many more goals than would have been imaginable just a few years ago. Comi's strategy relies on a strong offence and making many, many shots so it's up to the Electrumites to ensure that they're always positioned well to take advantage of any errant shots as well as quick counterattacks to take advantage of the few defenders they do have on the other end. If the Electrumites play their cards well and stay cool and calm amidst a never-ending offence, they're in with a shot.

It took until the very last whistle for the Starblaydi to qualify for the World Cup Proper: they were in a very tight group and it was only because of Red Blackiland's final matchday loss against Filindostan that allowed Starblaydia to qualify by just a single point. They had a rather varied performance as well, having one of the better defences in the first few matchdays of competition, before suddenly having matches with large scorelines such as 6-5 (their victory over Jabok) and 1-5 (their loss against Filindostan), then finally finding some form in the last few matches. in the end it was their consistency against top seeds Vilita (with two draws) that allowed them to advance to the next round of competition. What they lack in their current ranking, they more than make up for with passion for the game: they are five-time champions after all. With names like Di Bradini still in the mix, Clark will need to find ways to stop their wingers (such as Di Bradini) from doing too much damage and will probably need to count on captain Fernando and others to create opportunities down the middle for the best chance of victory.

Finally, Nephara. They have had a near flawless run just like the Electrumites during qualification and they are playing far and beyond above their ranking, having only a singular loss against Apox. It is an excellent recovery after the Cormorants had even more of a horrid cycle last edition, crashing out of the World Cup qualification into the Cup of Harmony. What was the reason they were dumped from the World Cup Proper? Their only two losses to what should have been victories against Tveidalen. With Michael Brandon stepping up as manager at the conclusion of qualifying, Brandon righted the ship and steered the Cormorants to a second place finish (to Qasden) in the Cup of Harmony, a respectable result for sure. But this respectable result still meant that Nephara lost a lot of points because of how relatively worse they did than three cycles ago. Despite me just writing about rankings and numbers, they should be ignored in this match: they are in excellent form and will be no pushovers. Our fullbacks and our defence will be more than important in this match. They also have a slight advantage compared to the other members of the group too: being in the Terranean region, they are only an hour behind the Avonian timezone, so like the Electrumites, won't have to adjust or account for jet lag when they arrive in Avon.

So those are our three opponents, a lot of history and varied performances between them during qualification. The pressure will be on Electrum -- they are expected to mount a respectable defence to their title and honestly speaking, it's one of the more exciting groups we've had in a long time. Let's just hope that we will see some close matches all around.

Our Dreams Have Come True,
by Brittany Byers, Team Captain

Very soon, the World Cup will be starting. The intensity of the qualification round is over, and we have had the opportunity to rest and recharge for the tournament. In theory anyway, most of us were playing domestic games, so “resting” was not necessarily the case. There were also a couple of post-qualifying friendly matches that we took part in, one defeating Drawkland at home by the score of 3-1, that we know many of you enjoyed in Concord Heights. I and others did not play in the match however, since as fate would have it, Drawkland is also in our World Cup qualifying match. As the friendly was agreed upon well before the World Cup draw, both sides wanted to do what was best and still play the match, but given that we will play each other in the World Cup itself, it made sense for each of us to not really show our main hand to the other. It is also being rumored now that a rivalry Cup (specific name of Cup not yet named) will begin a yearly occurrence between us and Drawkland, so I expect that will be fun, and something for else to look forward too. We also scheduled another friendly, this against Super-Llamaland, on the road, and in this game, myself and many other regular starters took to the field in order to prepare. Unfortunately, we did not get a result that we would have wanted, having lost to them 2-1, but it was good to play that game as well. Super-Llamaland is a nation Cassadagan baseball fans are very familiar with, since they won the World Baseball Classic 40 championship in Concord Heights, and that the Cassadagan baseball team is now coached by Maddie Polanco, who played many years for the Super-Llamaland side, and was their bench coach for their title season. Polanco played a role in bringing the idea to CASE for that friendly when Super-Llamaland was looking for some opponents, and it was an easy decision to schedule it. We’re not sure if we are going to make that a regular series too, but it is one that had a lot of our fans tuning in.

Off the field, we have spent a lot of time talking to fans both young and old. It does not matter what generation you are a part of, this return to the World Cup is something that everyone appreciates. A woman about my age in suburban Concord Heights put together a commemorative video about our qualification around this popular song. Definitely listening to that song gets you fired up about both where we have been, and where we want to go. Within our team, we try not to get too sentimental, but it is pretty impossible not to when we talk to our fans, and how much this means to them. It happened long enough ago for it to be well into our history books, but recently enough for players from those teams to still be alive to enjoy it. For the ones that are able, they will make the trip to Sonnel (extraordinary travel is not new to them, after all, as they have made trips to the Dreamed Realm, too). For the younger fans, it’s not about what we have done before, it’s about what the future holds. Will we get this far again in the next World Cup? What will we do in this World Cup?

This group is pretty interesting for us, given the position we are in. First of all, no one outside of Cassadaigua really expects us to make the round of 16, but that’s fine, no one expected us to get this far either. We’ve overcome all obstacles so far, so we are not going to be intimidated by the next ones that we will face. We know we have nothing to lose, but we’re still going to play smart and play with the same goal as the other three teams in the group, and the other 31 teams in the World Cup. The group is interesting for us though, given the make up of it. We are the “pot 4" team, and in the World Cup, the pots mean a little more then they do in the qualifying rounds. The host nation, Drawkland, is the pot 3 team. Naturally, the home crowd at Drawk City stadium will loudly be rooting against us in our matchday 1 game against Drawkland. It’s after that, where things get interesting. Because other then that, those Drawkish fans will likely be rooting for us against both Cosumar and Turori. Why? Because they want their own nation to advance, and they may need a little help along the way from us against the pot 1 and pot 2 teams. Us defeating (or even drawing) one of those nations would be seen as harmless to the Drawkish fans, since they are probably not really concerned about finishing behind us. Looking at the schedule, you can see that Drawkish schedulers were aware of this. Why? Because we’re not traveling. Once we go to Drawk City, we stay in Drawk City for all three games. Both Cosumar and Turori will be hopping around the nation, while we can settle in, not worry about travel, and have a rather peaceful practice schedule. We are kind of hoping, then, that we can become the unofficial home team here after our match with Drawkland. As long as no one references Scootalove City comebacks, we should be fine with that. So make that the last official reference to that!

Cosumar and Turori are both long-time nations. I’ll have to check with the historians out there, but I don’t know of any particularly memorable matches we have had with either of them. Cosumar has a little more familiarity to our older fans, given their widespread participation in many different sports. I’m thinking we’ve had bigger games in other sports, but not sure necessarily, about soccer. We’ve seen the Turori team play in the same World Cups we played in, time after time, but we don’t appear to have ever played them before, interestingly enough. Though I only did a quick check of history, perhaps someone could correct me if I am wrong. Vilita kept us from making the round of 16 in World Cup 67 that we hosted, but that’s as geographically close as you’ll get to a big meeting between us.

Enjoy the World Cup, but don’t just enjoy our games. Watch as many as you can, because these are the greatest soccer nations in the world. Some of these nations are long-time standbys that we are familiar with, but there are some nations that are very good in this tournament that we might not have really watched and enjoyed. It’s going to be fun. Enjoy it, and maybe along the way, we’ll surprise people!

Sarah Foureleven to Eventually Continue the Household Name?

If you know very little about Sarah Foureleven, the daughter of Bo and Xi Foureleven, you're not alone. Sarah is eight years old as World Cup 79 continues, and the adult Fourelevens protect her privacy as much as they can. This is also helped by the fact that Sarah herself tends to keep to herself. Save for spending time with her adopted sister Jordyn, which they tend to do behind the closed doors and comfy confines of their own rooms.

Several years ago, while Xi Foureleven relocated to another nation (a former 95X-controlled nation), she tried to enroll Sarah in school. Unlike most countries, elementary school isn't a shared experience in 95X; parents who would like their kids to attend pay tuition. On day one, Xi Foureleven was called to the school for "an important meeting."

"Normally, you'd meet with the Principal and CEO," the young female Kindergarten teacher explained to Xi, "but he thinks you're the most attractive person he's ever seen."

"More disgusting people have said worse," replied Xi, "Please explain why you have called me here."

"Well, we'd like to refund your tuition payment because Sarah is an academic prodigy," the teacher replied. "After giving her the most advanced tests we had available, and advanced for someone with five or six years of schooling I'll add, she completed them perfectly and within minutes. I'm afraid she's too advanced to be a student at our school."

Xi looked on with a straight face. She really wanted to provide Sarah with more opportunities than she ever had, and have her interact with children her own age. As she left the meeting, she was told Sarah was in the gym with her now-former classmates.

"Hey, wanna play basketball?" a Kindergarten boy asks Sarah, who's sitting off to the side.

"You are male, do not speak to me," Sarah coldly replied.

So a girl asked her, "Hey, tall girl! We wanna play five-on-five basketball but we need another player! Will you play with us?"

"I have a proper name," Sarah replied as she got up, "it is Sarah, and yes I shall join you."

Obviously, since Sarah had the height of a child twice the other kids' age, she played closest to the basket. During their play was when Xi Foureleven arrived, who watched for a few minutes until the gym monitor directed the kids to stop playing. After the two left the school, Xi broke the news to Sarah privately, who was surprisingly unfazed.

"The test they gave me was easy," Sarah said of the academic test. "That is okay, I wish to become proficient in a sport."

Xi knew she would say that, but she wanted to hear it from her, rather than anyone push her towards it.
