Pair of Qualifying victories breathes life back into the Kadongo Kamu
Banijans celebrate goal by Flomo Osei(#14) in 3-1 away victory over the Kiaser Colonies
BWUBANZA CITY- The Kadongo Kamu lost three of their first four World Cup Qualifiers, all of them by one goal, to kick off the Qualifying Campaign for World Cup 79. Even though Matchday 3 saw the Kadongo Kamu deliver a 4-0 thrashing on home soil to Reuss-Lippe, Banija was largely very close, but no cigar. A 4-3 loss to kick off qualifying at home against Boring Paradise hurt, but it hurt even more to have the Kabaka travel thousands of miles to watch them play, and lose 2-1 on a header by the 41 year old Bostopian Adam Fletcher. It was not a fun opening to the tournament, but a 4-0 win made sure things did not go off the rails. Another close away loss, this one by a score of 3-2 to Eastfield Lodge, left a bad taste in the mouth of the national team.
Their visit to Parliament Stadium was not a good time. They went down 2-0 quickly, and then, after clawing a goal back thanks to subsitute Matthias Muhumuza scoring in the 67th minute, they responded just a few minutes later to give themselves a seemingly insurmountable 3-1 lead over the Kadongo Kamu. Kiggwe Mavuto score one more in stoppage time to make the score a respectable 3-2, but the gap was wider than that on the field. But the frustration was mounting for this team. 3 losses for this squad, all by one goal against higher ranked opponents only enraged players, because it made them oh so close, but yet, left them so far away from their goals.
But everything changed against Eshan. Yet another top 60 opponent made the trek to Banija- there were four top 60 opponents for Banija to face in this group alone. Even though Eshan was much favored, Banija played what was probably, rather, what was easily, their best qualifier to date. It was a 2-1 upset victory over the #34 squad in international football, and boy, was it a relief. Banija had actually opened the scoring in the 56th minute, with Mavuto from a free kick that stunned Eshan and gave the Kadongo Kamu the lead. Anthony Baudelio, who entered the tournament with 104 international caps at the ripe young age, of 25, equalized in the 70th. It was an ominous feeling for the Banijans- would they concede yet another ranked goal and fall, yet again, by one goal?
The Kadongo Kamu, however, found a way to flip the script. In the 79th minute, Elias Abate lifted a perfect cross to the middle, where George Wangolo, the team captain, whose own goal cost them the game against Boring Paradise, was there and sent the PG Arena into a frenzy, and it saw the entire arena explode. The Kadongo Kamu fans went crazy, as the stadium became deafening. The team held out for the last 10 minutes, and in a very interesting decision, no stoppage time was given as the final whistle was blown as soon as the clock went to 90. It was a 2-1 victory for Banija, and the nation was celebrating.
However, one win by itself always means nothing, and they had a tough trip to the Kiaser Colonies to follow up their upset victory over Eshan. However, they were in control of this game, and won, 3-1. They opened scoring in the 12th, with Isaac Georgiadis scoring, and then Okafor scoring immediately before halftime to give the squad a 2-0 lead at the break. Beau Brooker cut the lead in half in the 65th, but a devastating counter-attack saw substitute Flomo Osei put the finishing touches on the 3-1 away victory in the 87th minute. It is Banija's first away victory of the qualification campaign.
Now, of course, they have two home games. They are favored in their home game against Lambdasia, who are ranked 285th in the world. They must stay focused on their opponent, however, and beat them in Bwubanza City. Bwubanza City is always a hellhole of a place for opponents to visit, so Banija should be able to get 3. But then, they have a visit from a top 5 Chromatika. That will be an extremely tough game, as Chromatika have taken 16 out of a possible 18 so far. We'll see if Banija's return to the nation's capitol will be able to inspire this side to get at least a point against Chromatika.
But first! Lambdasia. They are in 9th place in group play, with only 4 points through 6 games. Banija, however, need the 3 points, and must execute their gameplan. The offense will go through Mavuto. We ultimately expect that the Banijans will cruise by a score of 2-0, before they welcome a top 5 opponent into the Mugisha III Memorial Stadium. Hopefully they will find a way to make it 9 points from the last 3 points, to keep the momentum going before the giants of international football pay their visit.
