MNL Season 8 || Review || Part 3

Highlight: The Alchemists regain some ground with a heroic win in Iron Alley. Decima put them ahead with a clean solo run--she’s perhaps the best solo playmaker in the MNL at the moment--and Nightjar Evans curled in a free kick with three minutes left to secure the full three points.

Lowlight: Mariina getting slaughtered by Laneia is not a good look in any scenario. Travaan Beleil missing the game due to hamstring tightness hardly softens the blow, but they can look forward to him returning quickly.

Highlight: Wyvernscrest manages to keep the brush derby lively despite the Wyrms’ best efforts, young Audioslavian Esteve finding the sole eventual strike. That leapfrogs the Wyverns past their rivals for fifth!

Lowlight: Harbor, baby, what happened? You really couldn’t break the Wanderer’s defense? Thirty-four year old Bevi Khe too much of a rock at the back for your wingers to see past?

Highlight: Not often you see the Angels put up five, but wow, Reàl really just rolled over. Sheesh. That puts them in striking range of the Dæmons and Skewers, who got goose eggs on the road.

Lowlight: Speaking of, Wyrmstone did manage their choke job this time. Complete suffocation in the midfield, Miilo Benia having had Enough of Vance’s bullshit and orchestrated a beautiful interference gameplan. That two goals happened to roll in their favor might as well have been coincidence.

Highlight: The brushes come together in the Angel’s favor, severely upsetting the Dæmons and Skewers. Wyrmstone even put up an uncharacteristically forward line--Mezii Fiirs collecting just her second brace of the season. And they added an insurance goal on top of that!

Lowlight: Check Saefi’xalin for termites. She looked completely dazed between the sticks as Harbor ran up the score in what probably should have been a four-oh loss.

Highlight: Reyn and Gryst solidify a buffer from the drop zone by beating down on those already in the danger zone; it may not be mathematical, but Prei is virtually guaranteed to be going down.

Lowlight: The Angels just can’t get anything going against Mariina. Zilia Hawsorne flashes that she’s still got it to keep things even despite being peppered with far more shots on goal than her side managed.

Highlight: The Skewers take a six-pointer in commanding fashion, Lineker going hoarse ‘inspiring’ her side to crack some heads--and they get away with it. Siviir Braum nods home an early corner to put the Dæmons on the back hoof and, to really rub things in, Meadow Evergreen is handed a questionable penalty and converts without a second thought.

Lowlight: Easthold are falling further adrift of their comfort zone, with the Alchemists opening up five-point gap between them and their customary eighth place after a hard-fought match ends in Martiin Predo skying the potential equalizer.

Highlight: When the dust settles on the back-and-forth frenzy in Haven, the Dæmons come out ahead of Hosingr. With the help of the Royals, including a stunning scalp of the Skewers that will greatly help Westhold’s survival chances, the title remains within three points with nine left in play.

Lowlight: Wyvernscrest are in the process of completely imploding. Reàl stealing this game makes IFCF play a long shot for them, while seriously gumming up the relegation picture.

Highlight: The championship is down to… goals for?! The Skewers and Dæmons both took their home games and they’re both dead even on fifty-four points and a plus-twenty goal difference, so we’re at the bottom of the barrel for breakers. And don’t forget the Angels lurking just a point back and plus five difference.

Lowlight: The Brewers’ nil-all draw with Laneia gets side-eyed by the three sides below them, who all lose.

Highlight: Stasis at the top, points-wise, but the Dæmons take full advantage of an easy Wanderers matchup to get a goal apiece for each striker and winger. At this point that goal difference can easily mean the title, versus the Skewers only managing one past a modestly sturdy Reàl. Who then get dropped into the red zone following the Westrons winning and having a FAR superior differential.

Lowlight: The Alchs have been wildly streaky this year, and have streaked themself completely out of the conversation with this loss to the Angels. Izi Kaan’s consolation banger when Zilia was already thinking of the locker room means nothing.

Highlights: Complete and utter whiplash. The Wanderers duly roll over for the Skewers, getting absolutely fucking riddled with bullets. They’re up four within twenty minutes and in the lead by virtue of difference, coincidentally completely locking out the Angels who were in the process of routinely putting Westhold in the trash. Meanwhile the Dæmons are making heavy work of it at Pitch-by-the-Sea, their first lead being swiftly eliminated by Fyrcynn Gerfalcon snaking through a corner brawl to chest down and putt in a stray ball.
But then they start rolling. Murgen Knox punts a clearance that’s found by Tia Mor, who dances past Yuut Kalabaan to find Uugeth Tilanii’s waiting hoof and they’re back to deadlocked. 60 points, +25. Flank Sinatra, in what is almost surely his last game in the black and red, converts a penalty caused by Ynaara Jyyr’s sloppy tackle. The Dæmons have caught up AND taken the lead back, but they go to halftime as Bruul’s match resumes.

August Chappelle, pulled way out of position by Lineker’s frenzied press, finds himself just outside the box with the ball at his feet. In a moment of utter madness he finds a flicker of calm and fires a laser into the top left corner. They knew it wasn’t enough. Nobody was beating the Dæmons in goals scored, especially not now. The score needed to go even higher. An exhausted and overworked Yann Cawood was rolled off the pitch in favor of the throwaway youth backup who’d barely seen a minute all cycle: Peia Kær. And she handled everything the Brewers could throw at her with aplomb, with a grace beyond her years. The away fans in Pitch-by-the-Sea--literally seventy percent of the crowd--were chanting her name before Morea Zozetua crushed a header to make it a clean goal diff lead.

Lowlight: Hey the bottom three all lost and stayed in exactly the same places. The Westrons survive by the skin of their teeth, and both promoted teams go right back down.

THE TEAMS -- Find your local one(s), and probably the top three and bottom three for good measure.
MAAL DÆMONS -- THE DÆMONIC EMPIRE
The unparalleled most dominant season in MNL history. Vance Lazaar has been shelling millions upon millions out of pocket--single-handedly pushing Mriin up the Fekadu Financial Power Index and star-studding every position. Airik Ruhl continues to absolutely slaughter the MNL, running rings around a league that’s just still not quite at the caliber of a player his level. It’s a second Gilded Hoof in the bag for him, but one has to imagine age (going on 33) will start to slow him down in a physical league. The young Hinodijen centreback Tenmu Tsu’umutapo acquitted himself well in the odd learning environs of a 4-2-4, though it helps being slotted into what’s suddenly become a star-studded defense alongside Doolan, Isarghie, and Knox--all current or former high-level international players. And, of course, Morea Zozetua and Uugueth Tilanii are the heart of the team--after nearly a decade playing together up front they’re finally reaping the rewards.

MAAL ANGELS -- MORAL VICTORY
Sixty-seven points would have been more than enough to win the league most years. All the Angels can take solace in was doing the double in the derby, handing the Dæmons fully half their losses. And, well, historically unprecedented defensive superiority. In early seasons the Angels had had 11 and 10 goals allowed seasons, but single digits?! Zilia Hawsorn still has an iron grip in goal even at 36, with Pasargan Rajih Zafir Mansour having adapted comfortably to the confines of the MNL--at this point he must be the subject-matter expert on defending satyrs as a human. There was a little friction up front, however, as Jessica Siafik has started stepping on Kubunga’s toes. The latter is an Angels stalwart, one of the first big signings the league had, but is starting to slow...

BRUUL SKEWERS -- A BITTER PILL
Coming third is usually nothing terrible, even if a disappointment for a team with high hopes--but being in third by a margin of eighteen points? That’s harder to swallow. The Fife/Fyfe convergence yielded significantly less dividends than in Season 9, and Meadow Evergreen seems to have lost the finishing touch that defined her legendary season. As one of two teams that staggered their way to double-digit draws it was a common sight to see Emery Lineker apoplectic on the sidelines as her team failed to capitalize on chances for the lead or blew the ones they had week in and week out. Perhaps starting a twenty-two year old Farf in goal was a bit overoptimistic, too. And when the race for third, meaningless as that is, ended in both contending teams farting their way to an away draw to inferior opponents? Bleh.

VIDIAL ALCHEMISTS -- STEADY AS SHE GOES
The Vidial fanbase is a fickle one. One defined by college students and/or alcoholics with short attention spans, a traditional ‘rebuilding’ period would be catastrophic to the team’s bottom line, and their strategy of stabilizing with slightly above-average Nepharim and Brenecians seems to be paying off as they’re now consistently back in the Challenger’s Cup spots. The frontline trio of Nightjar Evans, Decima, and Izi Kaan kept things entertaining in supporting the most prolific offense in the league--if you discount the Dæmons and their fucking thirty extra goals.

HARBOR -- THE FALSE SPRING
The Harbor fanbase on Twii.tur had taken to calling the debacle that was season 9 performance a “false winter.” Inge Wildsmith and Jean-Samuel Duboix finally gelled into a cohesive midfield unit, and fed Siviir Braum into gilded hoof contention and IFCF play--which is no doubt a great improvement. But a look at their roster reveals a team going nowhere fast. No less than half the starting XI is 33 or older! Including two Qusmi’y splitting their time with the newly-minted Pug Xily’a! A rebuild must be on the cards or there’ll find no safe harbor here.

AFC HOSINGR -- JUUUUUUUST A BIT OUTSIDE
Hosingr has become the new absurdly-consistent team, always present on the bubble of IFCF play and seeming like their fate hinges more on the fortunes of their opponents than their own. Their young back line may be looking to make some noise in the future, however--Lamaar Hightower and Kiora Moor are only 24 but have a veteran tinge to their play already.

EASTHOLD ROYALS -- YOU THOUGHT YOU COULD ESCAPE
“It’s a new era,” the Warlocks thought. “We’re not hard stuck in sixth-to-eighth place anymore!” Nah, that was an aberration. Back to seventh you go. There is still potential here, though: Nuan Li Laolong, the Hinodijen who signed with the club so his dragon would have a spot to roost, performed well in his first starting season alongside the Chromatik Kandice Sayer. If they decide to splash out when replacing the multiple ancient Brenecians and Baker Parkers they’d been trotting out? Perhaps…

AC MARIINA -- OBLIGATORY VCI ENTRY
With the MNL’s “Entertaining Football” award dictating their entry into the Vilitan Cove Invitational it’s pretty easy to guess who’s going to make it in before a given season even starts. Pre-empire-ing, the Dæmons and their old unbalanced formation were usually a lock. Nowadays it’s up to Mariina to go out there chasing inadvisable numbers of goals. Both Squornshelan (remnant?) Eddara Tjaeder and Nepharan Dietmar Sattelmaier would have been in with a shout for the Gilded Hoof in a normal one-team-didn’t-score-eighty season. It might stand to reason they’d have done better with a more established midfield than a Pasargan youth who’s twenty years younger than his Turorian partner, but “Indelli Nura’amura” and “Csongor Sebeôk” are difficult to pronounce and they’ve got a gimmick to stick to.

ANYONE FROM 9 TO 14 -- WHAT’S THE POINT
A frighteningly tight band of mediocrity. A four-point stretch covers these six spots, all teams who were never in contention for anything or at risk of the drop. Zzzzzz.

WYRMSTONE -- THE CUP HANGOVER
Realistically, the Wyrms were always going to be expected down here. They dodged relegation via goal differential last season and didn’t make a real effort to improve, perhaps satisfied that taking the cup home was their good deed for the time being. You can expect Nepharan centreback Lars Blacktown and local midfielder Paraise Haart to get rescued from the Lower here.

LANEIA -- THE WILTING FLOWER
While “Dryads are obscenely resistant to change” is a false and damaging stereotype, Laneia gaffer Ynaar’poalin unhelpfully reinforces that. They’ve been running their odd 6-1-3 formation to highly variable but mostly mediocre results since the inception of the MNL, and it seems their utter refusal to adapt--beyond being the reason they lost their best player, Tali’raia, all those years ago--finally came back to bite them as the rest of the league had them utterly found out. Ynaar’poalin hasn’t been sacked yet, but if he fails to immediately navigate them back into the Upper then there will be problems.

Peekin’ Through the Window
Mrii National League || Season 11

Harbor Repairs
Owner Jan Kaplan seems to be getting serious about a title push. Nearly half the starting eleven will be suiting up for them for first time this season, from a variety of sources. Touted prospect Beiren Reiger returns from a loan in Andü where he helped them to a quick re-promotion, and he's ready to finally start marauding in the Upper. He'll be joined by the thrifty pickup Alexei Gusev on the wing, surprisingly the first Delaclav player to grace our shores despite the close proximity. That a player of his talent came on a free might be chalked up to having to live under the shadow of his twin brother Valentin? Then the real cash was doled out shoring up the back line, which has been a sieve for as long as the gulls have been playing football. Amalie Asghar was the big splash, chucking $5 million for the capped Vanorian fullback. She'll be at a very distinct height disadvantage in the MNL but should more than make up for it with her tactical awareness and well-rounded grounded game. Last, but not least, is Squornshelan (Remnant) centreback Terun Cadash--seen as a bit of a flop back home, but Kaplan feels like they can rebuild her confidence and turn her into a solid contributor.

Invasion of the Living Appliances!
Sylestone's entrance into the international footballing scene has caused quite a ruckus among the more humano-centric cultures out there, despite the majority of the nation just being regular old' humies. Everyone focuses on how their NT is made up of the sentient and sapient appliances native to the city of Kirkham, and while that's nothing special to the average Mrii I'm still required to write this sensationalist section. Bar Stool joins the Alchemists to produce likely the most creative midfield in the league as they'll work alongside Jasko Voleimann. They'll be working to feed Corona Sharpe, a Nepharan striker who won't be directly contesting many satyr defenders at 33 but was specifically selected for her ability to find holes in defenses and bypass that problem entirely. Then over in Easthold they've signed Washing Machine, because lord knows Seagate wasn't a damp enough pitch to begin with. And also they picked up 34-year-old Mari Lavoi, who somehow has fallen from grace via her sister forcing her out of the Angels over the course of a few cycles. We'll see if she can find her form from the first few cycles again now that she can put Haven behind her.

Jealousy at the Top?
Speaking of, we'll see how the Angels will adapt to their new 4-3-1-2 formation--very similar to how the Reavers play, shifting Jessica Siafik up to the front and bringing on Kurtis Laiota as the strike partner. Perhaps with the gulf the Dæmons had on them last cycle despite an ostensibly great season, they feel like they need to play catch-up--a more aggressive formation, and a more aggressive player like Laiota who's brutish manner would classically fit their neighborhood rivals better.

MNL Season 13 || Review || Part 1

The first ternary of the season comes to a close with an early shocker of a table. Wyvernscrest are on an absolute tear powered by their young defense, having not lost a match yet. The Dragonriders are out to finally put their yo-yo reputation to rest with a stunningly proficient start following yet another promotion. And the Dæmons might be slipping into the old inconsistency issues they thought they'd left a decade in the past—five losses in ten games? What the hell? There'll be a lot on the mind of the Maal fans as the league goes on international break for the first half of World Cup qualifiers.

Impact Players
Árpád Noir and Ären Tyyndre - CB and CB - Wyvernscrest
One of the first Maal-borne Farves to break into the MNL is making a big impact in his age twenty-three season. Árpád always worked well enough with his fullback partner Ären, but their synergy has been next level to start this season. His speed, dexterous challenges, and distribution abilities interlock perfectly with her height, brawn, and bone-crunching to cover every scenario. Ären even nodded home the insurance goal in their huge 2-4 away win in Bruul on MD10; that's the kind of win that turns heads.

Ender Fife - RB - Bruul Skewers
Many argued that the F[i/y]fe triumvirate (also featuring manager Lilith and striker John) would need to finally be broken up as the Apoxing rightback reached the ripe old age of thirty-six. The Skewers may have won the league at a trot last cycle, but complacency is how you lose that edge! And that... is sadly looking to be true. There's no doubt having her in the clubhouse is still a boon for the team—a fiery personality with loads of leadership skills and experience is a winning combination—but the way she's slowed on the flank looked particularly bad in the earlier-mentioned home loss to Wyvernscrest, as well as the embarrassment that was the opening day 1-4 loss to Mont Mont Reàl. Lilith is going to have some hard decisions to make as the season goes on—do you bench Ender in favor of DBC graduate Luuna Piirs to get that speed back in the backfield? Could her inexperience, or the moral hit from benching a legend, cancel out that upside?

Ariqine Arrowstorm - RW - Prei Dragonriders
The tiefling imports from Plane of Possibility were warmly welcomed to the league—hircine camaradery and all that—but weren't exactly hyped up as the next big things. But Ariqine has made the most of the Dragonriders' arguably easy schedule thusfar, a key cog for them both going forwards and tracking back. Aside from netting a fair few goals themselves, they've done a stellar job manufacturing opportunities to feed striker Ywigriita Sydriik from spots that looked like dead ends. Ywigriita's finishing is also worth mentioning for her consistency—if these two can maintain this level of play, Prei might be looking at their first great season in a long time. But both are also still very young; regression to the mean (or even rubber-banding below the mean) wouldn't be surprising.

Œlib Vol - LM - Andü Volunteers
While not flying quite as high as the Dragonriders, the Vols have done well to lift themselves out of the immediate threat of falling back to the Lower. One of the surprise packages has been Œlib, a rook fresh out of university taking over for elder statemen Leo Devor in the midfield—who had notably played every single season for the Vols since the MNL was incorporated. That's a hard act to follow, especially for someone playing their first professional football! But he's adapted quickly, providing lots of pace to one of the slower teams in the league and largely avoiding any major on-the-ball fuckups... which, at this point, is all they can really ask for.

MNL Season 13 || Review || Part 2

Oh, the Dæmons were angry. 8-1-1 over the second ternary with an average goals-per-game of three and a half! An 8-1 obliteration of the Dragonriders compliments their earlier 7-1 over the Vols, pumping their stats on the promoted teams regardless of how well they're doing against the field. A 1-all draw in the return leg of the Haven derby is disappointing... but consdering they won the first leg 1-5 and the Angels are still languishing in the midtable, it's a big profit for Dæmons fans. Now they just have to track down those pesky Skewers... once the league returns from another international break, as the second half of World Cup Qualifying spins up.

Impact Players
Ügueth Tilanii - ST - Maal Dæmons
The tariff on imported players put in place last cycle really fucked up a lot of team's plans when it came to refreshing their rosters. Among that was probably the Dæmons not being able to find a replacement for 35-year-old Airik Ruhl while pawning him off to a lower-ranked league. Ruhl is still a dynamic player that can make things happen, no doubt—but losing a step against satyrs makes their physical advantages so much more obvious. Bake that in with a temper that's never subsided and... he hasn't been the most reliable up front for a team that wants to be competing at the sharp end of the league. That's where Ügueth finally took the step up to take the role of primary playmaker and scorer for the team, after nearly a decade of being the partner-in-crime to Morea Zozetua and then being the second-in-command to a colossus of Cosumarite football (rip). And it's about time—at thirty-two he's approaching the end of his (for a satyr) prime, and that mixture of peak performance and experience just let him bang in a whole fuckin' boatload of goals this ternary.

Bar Stool - CM - Vidial Alchemists
While the Dæmons might have half-again as many goals as the Alchs, among the rest of the mortals they're leading the league. And a shocking number of those thirty-six goals—10, nearly one in three—have been assisted by Bar Stool. The Sylestonean appliance without a doubt brings a completely different perspective to the game, moreso than any other singular player in the league; the creativity that enables has kept the Alchemical machine running smoothly even when it should be on fumes.

Kaarst Feinor - RB - Harbor
The hope was that understudying under the formidable Vanorian Amalie Asghar would have done wonders for Kaarst's development after his mediocre showings in the developmental league and off the bench in the DBC. The athletic skill is there: he's big, he's got good enough speed, and stamina for days. But the game sense just never quite clicked. And when Asghar—along with the rest of the Vanorians in the MNL—decided it was best to jump ship after the tariff passed, he was thrust into the starting slot before he was fully cooked. He's been a key weakspot in a historically porous defense, that now has to stretch itself even thinner to attempt to make up the difference.

Mokiita Runaan - GK - Easthold Royals
The warlocks gave Mokiita an extra year to develop thanks to the Urban Malthus loan last cycle, and that seems to have paid off as she's excelled in goal for them so far this season. Acrobatic enough to fulfill shotstopping duties while having studied up on the varied duties of a modern keeper. If only her outfield players could score, like, literally any goals.

MNL Season 13 || Review || Part 3

So, uh. Some shit went down during the season's second international break. And with the disappearance of the majority of the MNL council—who were all also team owners actually paying the players—the third ternary has been canceled. The future of the league is uncertain, but there are already talks among the teams not affected by the scandal to perhaps keep a professional football circuit on the islands.

As for this season? Well, it's over. That's about all I can tell you for sure. The cup was left in total shambles, with 5 of 8 quarterfinalist teams disqualified. Many Upper teams just... simply won't exist, next cycle. They can't participate in IFCF. The Skewers will obviously get to play, considering they de facto won the league and escaped relatively unscathed. But will the qualifying spots slide down? Would that violate the nebulous merit-based qualification rules? I suppose it's up to the IFCF bods to decide on that, now.

An exodus of foreign talent during the transfer window was accompanied by unprecedented levels of domestic activity as top players desperately searched for places to spend the upcoming season.

Who They Are
Founded some two decades ago by the notorious Rhone Kresh, the once-baron of Bruul who’s militant disposition and ready access to throngs of thugs made for a very public display of Seastone’s organized criminal elements. Nearby Vidial’s mafiosos operated more on the sly, specializing in the string-pulling and quiet disappearances that grease the city’s underbelly. No such subtlety was utilized by Kresh, and that extended to the thugs he hired to play football in some egotistical grasp at glory.

While Kresh was “dealt with” a fair few years ago and Bruul’s reputation has managed to recover mightily in that time, some stains never wash away. Ruthless and aggressive play is still a hallmark of the squad and something the fans demand, albeit in a less brutal fashion than the old days. The stands of the Den may no longer bay for blood, but they will absolutely applaud a well-timed laying out.

Why They’re Still Here
It’s fair to say that in the snapback from Kresh’s outing, the Bruul community went on a… let’s say “anti-corruption binge.” Local officials were cleared out and replaced en masse and a sharper eye was cast on those applying to join the new Skewers front office: as such, no links could be drawn between anyone in the organization and the higher-level fuckery that was endemic to the other major MNL sides. And of course, having won several titles in the last few years, the Skewers are in no danger of fiscal collapse. Thus, they’re the one giant of Mrii football to stay intact and are without a doubt favorites going into the first season of the Remnants.

What They’re Doing
The Skewers didn’t need any help—they won the final MNL seasons four points clear, albeit ten games early. And with their principle rivals in the Dæmons, Angels, and Alchemists all going poof, who’s to stand in their way? Regardless, Fife (Lilith, that is—Ender’s finally retired, bringing an end to the legendary Fi/yfe trio) didn’t stand idly by as the rest of the league worked over the abandoned rosters. Tiamat Harvaal is an elite midfielder who was a career Angel that they’ve managed to lure in, being able to play both the Skewer’s preferred physical game while providing a much improved passing game to the outgoing veteran Briir Tosaani.

Interestingly, they snapped up one of the few players misplaced from an existing team: Nlaaro Tjaan was bumped out of Wyvernscrest’s starting lineup by their new acquisitions, and the Skewers felt his skills would be useful—pending an agreement to shift over to playing on the left. And of course, they tout the strongest international talent still playing in Mriin: relics of dormant nations in August Chappelle and John Fyfe, club legend Meadow Evergreen, and former Farf NT keeper Isak Aanderaa.

Wyvernscrest—both the team and the ground—trace its roots to the eponymous geological ridge, visible for miles in the very flat and relatively fertile farmland of north-eastern Easthold. It was a natural congregation point for the farmers of the area and soon the city of Northbrush was built nearby, housing taverns and various economic services for the locals. And, of course, giving them a place to get together and kick a ball around.

It’d take years of pushing for the establishment of professional football in Mriin as well as a partnership with the scoundrels in Southbrush before they could field a field what might be considered a “proper” team, but once the wheels got rolling the Wyverns were established as a respectable side that could hold their own against the big city folks. And despite that modernization, the fanbase has maintained a relaxed and genial attitude. Attending a Wyvernscrest game still feels like a bunch of farmers enjoying their precious time off from the fields with drinks and barbeque galore.

Why They’re Still Here
The org never trusted the city slickers, simple as. Whatever plots and ploys the MNL tried to hand down from on high where rejected or ignored as appropriate by Wyvernscrest’s management—not out of a suspicion of any wrongdoing (though that’s always a slight concern when dealing with Maal and Vidial-types), but out of a certain sense of pastoral pride. Worked out in the end, either way, as they couldn’t be implicated in any of the hullabaloo. In financial terms, they actually bailed out their part-business-partners-part-despised-rivals Wyrmstone, as the bigger market and more historically successful team. It just wouldn’t be the same game if you didn’t get a chance to stick it to those fucks, y’know?

What They’re Doing
It’s the coalescence of the Mo(o)rs—one that gaffer Treina maintains is a “complete coincidence, we don’t have the cheesy gimmicks of Mariina and Bruul.” Joke or not, that’s two former Reavers being stapled onto a team that was in third place when the last MNL season broke down. Add in acquiring the promising winger Niikœa Kavaari—whose pace will hopefully make up for Esteve and Ketilbjörg Aunosdóttir’s aging legs—and veteran Dæmons winger Kliio Skaarn, and Wyvernscrest are set to be the on-paper biggest challenger to Skewer dominance in the Remnant.

Who They Are
One might call Mariina an “artificial” team, even by Mrii standards. Assembled to serve as entertainment for the wealthy summer-home-owners that make up Mariina’s most “permanent” populace as well as the vacationers that flock to the area’s beach resorts, an identity was cut out of whole cloth to slap on a team of journeymen paid to play entertaining football above all else. There’s no doubt they succeeded in that goal. Goals have always abounded in the Pitch-by-the-Sea on both ends and it’s kept interest in the team high enough that the “locals” enough to have produced, well, something starting to resemble a fan culture. One that involves luxury boxes, caviar, and special yacht modifications to make viewing the matches from offshore possible, but a culture nonetheless.

One season someone in the Mariina front office had the idea to run a contest to try and jumpstart both engagement and attendance—sign a few foreigners with particularly funky names, and run a contest that the first couple of hundred Easthold-based fans to call in and correctly pronounce all of them win a ticket and free travel to a Mariina home game. This was such a hit and brought in a surprising amount of travel from Maal for these games that the program was extended and expanded, management forging contracts on ever more foreigners. This had the unintended side effect of raising the skill level of the team, as the team had the money to throw around for any name they liked meant they picked up several players of some repute and started pushing upwards in the standings. A few brushes with first place have even happened, even if they didn’t last long… but some think they might be the real competition for the Skewers here in the Remnants.

Why They’re Still Here
The wealth concentrated in the city of Mariina is starkly different from that found in the major cities. Vidial is old money that built a deeply-ingrained underground to protect their interests; Maal is nouveau riche that made ample use of underhanded business practices to establish themselves and eliminate the competition. Mariina? They’re just good ol’ fashion above the board capitalists, committing all the sentient rights violations and blatant theft that’s permitted in a modern market economy. Careful planning and expansion was required to not get embroiled in the secret wars being fought by the other Mrii market sectors, but many businesspeople managed it and made their bank the respectable way. The Mariina organization is safe and well-off until the revolution comes.

What They’re Doing
Nikalia Haart and Filia Draaken hardly fit Mariina’s difficult-to-pronounce gimmick, but are arguably the two best defenders displaced by disgraced or folded teams. For a team that’s so heavily been obsessed with goals and nothing but goals for so long, this might be a sign ownership is ready to pony up and put together a properly well-rounded team. While most of the incoming players are taking the spot of well-aged players finally retiring, there is one notably downgrade—Pasargan Csongor Sebeôk requested a move out, the twenty-year old possibly feeling establishing their career in a league under turmoil might not be the best plan. And while normally Liana Lemuur wouldn’t be a downgrade in any sense—being a bench player for the Angels doesn’t do much to impinge the quality of your play—she’ll be having to learn a new role in the midfield, something that should work in the long-term with her athleticism and game awareness but will take some time to acclimate.

Who They Are
Originally founded as a corporate team for Jan Kaplan, the one Mrii shipping magnate not based out of a Maal and a long-time support of his hometown of Hosingr. He’s still the owner, but they’ve long-since graduated to a professional side and had a brief heyday in the early days of the MNL with back-to-back titles in seasons 2 and 3. Since then they’ve struggled mightily, gradually falling from consistent Globe Cup participants to struggling to find purchase in the Challenger’s Cup spots as persistent holes in the squad could never adequately be patched up.

The swell of bandwagon fans from around the nation disappeared as those titles drifted further into the past and Jan had to do some work re-ingratiating himself to the hard-working, largely poor locals after taking a bite of that golden consumerist apple. A new wave of reinvesting into Hosingr itself followed, and with a variety of improvements to infrastructure, building of new communal spaces, and providing support nets the industrial city rarely knew reminded everyone—including Jan himself—how important the city was to him, and after several years that support has begun to reciprocate. Also helps that there’s a gaping hole in the city left by former-rivals AFC Hosingr going poof—it might finally be time for a unification between the inland and seaside sections of the city.

Why They’re Still Here
A similar refrain as to the teams listed above—Jan Kaplan has kept his public image clean, with little involvement in the underbellies of the other two cities. No implications could be made and the team is on financially stable ground, so they helped lead the formation of the Remnants.

What They’re Doing
Nimiira is in some particularly hot water following the signing rush of ex-team players, as Harbor stood stock still and let these opportunities pass them by. Considering they were having yet another Incredibly Average midtable run, faith in the current lineup is much lower among the fans than it apparently is in management. There’s definitely still quality to be found—Gusev is an excellent creative presence in the squad’s wide attack patterns, and Cadash is a rock in the back, but the pieces just never seem to come together. At least noted prospect Änyl Bærdhoven will get a chance to get her hooves wet, as Falax-Paliv Yet’s retirement finally opened a spot.

Who They Are
Ashfell is an odd town in the somewhat barren southern half of Easthold. Located not far from a prominent archæological digsite, their biggest pull for years was the University of Archæology’s campus. But following an usually good university footy team managing to scrape together an application to join the MNL’s Lower division, getting accepted, and actually winning some games, the town’s name started getting recognized around the nation. This somehow lead to it becoming a trendy place for middle-class hipsters to move to—something about “becoming more in tune with our history” or some similar pretentious hogwash. It ended up becoming a surprisingly lucrative groundswell, and now Ashfell has grown into small city in its own right.

The team has grown with it, and while they were never close to being considered a “force” in the MNL, steady improvement let them stay fairly reliably in the lower reaches of the Upper. The hipster atmosphere penetrates everything in the area deeply, and thus the Drownyard is utterly surrounded by trendy gastropubs and art galleries.

Why They’re Still Here
If The Debacle had happened several years ago, Ashfell could easily have fallen in with the teams from Gryst and Reyn and other small towns that would instantly collapse without support from the broader league. But times have changed and the now-city can sell out its grounds reliably enough to keep the lights on and the clerks paid. Ownership still has most of its ties to the University of Archæology, one of the most altruistic intuitions in Mriin which has little need of Doing Crimes.

What They’re Doing
While they may be able to make payroll, they don’t make it with much to spare. As such hiring on any of the star players or big prospects was out of the question, so a low-key reinforcement of the midfield in ex-Angel stalwart Olaana Tagarii will have to do. Players to watch otherwise are at both ends: Ælok Iasen is an extremely technical striker for a satyr, with a delicate finishing touch. Meanwhile Ryyl Drænor is a brute of a keeper that punches balls out of the air with a ferocity rarely seen, and with an impressive off-the-line speed that can leave opposing strikers surprised and eating dirt.

Who They Are
Mriin’s army is largely a thing of that past—modern power projection is all invested in the navy—but the military academy in Prei is still active and maintained nonetheless, having been converted into the joint-civilian institution of the University of Archery. The Dragonriders can trace their lineage back farther than most teams, to the renaissance days of literal dragonriders giving Mriin an airforce well before the invention of modern flight machines. Of course, football wouldn’t be introduced to the isles for hundreds of years after that, but the U of Archæology has unearthed evidence that it has been a single contiguous sports club made up of soldiers and officers that eventually coalesced into the modern team.

Cliffside is an rigorous environment to play pretty much any sport in, featuring astroturf fields, spartan furnishings, and the high-altitude environment of being built halfway up a mountain. Discipline is also expected in the stands—not that hooliganism is an endemic part of Mrii football to begin with, but the locals provide for an intimidating environment for anyone thinking about Starting Shit.

Why They’re Still Here
It’s commonly suspected that the military is corrupt five ways to Sunday, but they’re not really relevant enough anymore for anyone to care. Add to that that it’s mostly internal bureaucratic corruption as opposed to the more interesting widespread criminal enterprise corruption, and the Dragonriders were cleared of The Debacle pretty early on. Prei couldn’t support the team alone as a rather sparsely populated town, but it’s greatly in the U of Archery’s best interests to keep that “oldest club in the nation” claim up so they’re gladly hoofing the bill to keep the Dragonriders alive to play in the Remnants.

What They’re Doing
Nearly a complete overhaul. They had done admirably well in the shortened final season, but Edon was not fucking around when they went to ownership and said this was their chance to establish the team as a true contender. Basically everyone on the roster now is a promising and/or proven youth, bar Ynaara Jyyr who’s just proven. The weak link might very well be the offense, which makes up three of the four players remaining in the starting lineup (Älita being the fourth). It was working out well enough last cycle, so hopefully not breaking up that unit will pay dividends.

Who They Are
Without a doubt the most altruistic organization in Mriin, the Vols started out as a philanthropic effort by a factory owner early in the industrial era. Foster care to help deal with an abandonment epidemic as work hours were extended and family care became impossible. Following worker’s rights laws being passed to deal with the source of the crisis, and a campaign to normalize adoption in broader society which was wildly successful, that factory owner gave the entire organization to the city of Andü and basically wiped themselves from the historical record. Details are fuzzy and their true motivations are unknown, but the common theory is that they felt they’d atoned for their capitalist sins as best they could and chose to end their legacy there before they could make any more mistakes.

In the time since Andü has practically become a suburb of Maal’s mega-metropolis but has managed to remain distinct through that history and the still-operational social works program. The Vols are known for having a strong internal pipeline featuring, you guessed it, mostly players with the surname ‘Vol’—the one given to children passed to foster care through official means. They were the classical yo-yo team of the MNL, always just awkwardly on that talent border where they didn’t have the edge to stay up but were too cohesive a unit to ever stay down. At least they won’t have to worry about relegation anymore!

Why They’re Still Here
The entirety of the Volunteers’ operations are completely public and regularly audited; it’d have been daft for the conspirators to have tried to do anything with the Vols as it’d instantly get noticed and outed. And of course, being a major organization funded by a city for whom they’re its claim to fame, affording to keep running isn’t an issue.

What They’re Doing
Goals were what the Vols were severely lacking last cycle, and if there’s one thing Ügueth Tilanii can guarantee it’s goals. He may be used to playing a more supportive role in the overbearing Dæmons offense, but you don’t play on the Dæmons for ten years without developing a vicious sense for finding the goal. And hopefully his tutelage will help get Ÿda Vaan back on track, a prospect who’s been severely underperforming expectations recently—all the skills are still there and readily apparent, but results aren’t coming. Rumours of off-field antics are spreading, but that’d be terribly out-of-character for the Vols...

Who They Are
The smaller counterparts to Wyverns as Southrbush is the smaller counterpart of Northbrush. Always a sense of envy, but also a sense of being indebted—without the support of their farmland siblings there was never a chance a hamlet could support a team that can threaten to break into IFCF play. On the other hand, pooling the resources of both towns was also vital to the Wyverns breaking into professional play. As much as they like to play the parts of bitter rivals, it’s a truly symbiotic relationship between two very intertwined communities… down to their bizarre arrangement of sharing an academy team, with prospects coming up being given a choice of which team to play for.

Why They’re Still Here
As discussed in Wyvernscrest’s section, they couldn’t bear to see their smaller rivals fold and provided the economic assistance to stabilize the Wyrms.

What They’re Doing
“Damn, Wyrmstone’s defense is already oppressive, I hope it doesn’t get EVEN BETTER” — fool who didn’t think Zlaara would immediately snap up half of Hosingr’s backline the second they became available. Flee, all ye strikers, for there’s no place for you in the land of Alcaantra, Lamaar, Dræmond, AND Mikjan.

Who They Are
The enigmatic denizens of Westhold’s forests, dryads have always maintained a distinct culture and methods of self-governance away from the broader satyr-dominatined Mrii state. They’re still rather insular with most insights into their culture being curated tourist experiences for curious satyrs and humans. Football got introduced to them by some manner a long time ago—U of Archæology studies imply they somehow got ahold of the general rules of the game several decades before the satyrs did—and developed their own style of play that has survived until the current day. As evidenced by their odd 6-1-3 formation you can see above.

The strategy was figured out pretty quickly into the MNL’s existence, however, and perhaps through a sense of tradition Kumae’zana has refused to adapt significantly to modern play patterns. This predictably lead to eventually dropping into the Lower, and occasionally floundering down there. There are rumours that the shake-up caused by the formation of the Remnants is inspiring some dryads to push for managerial change and a new look on the game, but if that’s true the motions haven’t been put into place quite yet. Most projections have them squarely at the bottom of the table.

Why They’re Still Here
It’s unsure if there’s even an internal system of capitalism to be found within dryad communities, and rather that they only externally interface with the concept of an economy to purchase supplies and servers from foreign sectors. As such there’s very little to go on when it comes to figuring out if they were involved in the shenanigans two islands over. And, in a similar vein, the team hardly has a turn a profit to make a living.

What They’re Doing
Absolutely fuckin’ nothing. It’ll be the exact same team in the exact same formation as has been playing for over twenty years at this point.

Wyvern's Horde
Wyvernscrest had been expecting to be the ones battling the Skewers for the top spot in the first season of the Remnants. When they finished a dozen points out from both them and the surprise run of Mariina? Well, they just can't have that. Management has splashed out in a way they've historically avoided, as it seems years and years of trying to foster home-grown talent in the fields of Northbrush just isn't going to cut it for top-level football. Enter none other than Gentle Breeze, legendary Equestrian goalkeeper! Arguably the best stopper in the world at one point—perhaps even still—her time at Zozi has drawn to a close for one reason or another, and now she's here to ride out her twilight years hoisting some farmhands up by their britches. Though there have been whispers of foul play associated with the deal—I'm not one to spread baseless gossip (hah), but word on the street is that there was a domino effect of bribes and thuggery that wove its way around the National League and a variety of sports agents with vested interests therein before a deal for Breeze was finally struck. I reiterate, there's no actual evidence to back up these stories, and surely Wyverns management would know better than to get themselves embroiled into such a controversy only one cycle removed from the utter collapse of the MNL under its own corruption. Surely.

Anyway, they also picked up wunderkid Cree Martel, formerly of the Jeckish national team and having been tearing up the Q-League for a few years already despite being a tender twenty-three years old. He'll be replacing the aging Audioslav Esteve (oft rumored to be of Daeneri blood, but I personally think his mononym is for unrelated reasons), bringing some much-needed pep to their front line in addition to the boatloads of technical skill and finishing prowess he's renowned for. These are two seriously high-profile signings that'll give the Wyverns a serious leg up in their chase for a first-ever title.

Mariina Keeps Celebrations Sivil
Sure, the parade through the gilded streets of the vacation getaway for Maal's ultra-wealthy was exceedingly pompous and ostentatious. And the insufferable fairweather fans bragging about their newfound success grated on all the die-hard fans (by necessity fans of literally any team aside from Mariina) that had their social media feeds flooded. The countless headlines talking about how they somehow won the inaugural LigAnaia tournament twice. But that all was made up for by them sniping one Enyerbe Sivils from the Squornshelan Remnant States, a diamond in the rough that Athletic was convinced would be in the rough indefinitely. But the marketing team behind the squad—Mariina is run entirely by marketers looking to exploit the wealthy fanbase, none of the area's old money or nouveau riche directly funds them outside of paying for ludicrously marked up luxury boxes—knows a solemn truth. The truth that the diamond market is a complete sham built to bilk the bourgeoisie. Anything can be brought up to the level of diamond with proper investment and a good shine job, and Sivils had the exact sort of profile they were looking to shine up.

One (1) Deitr
The legend of both the Mrii Deitr Konovaal and the Nepharan Dieter Konoval playing for KT Moreazerua was a fan-favorite for years, but it’ll just be the satyr returning to our shores to ply the midfield for Harbor. Of course, coming back to his old team wasn’t an option, what with the disbanding of the Angels and all. But the thirty-five year old will still be providing plenty, and paired with the also-thirty-five Inge Wildsmith will form by far the most experienced midfield in the league. Will oodles of top-level experience and the wisdom of lives well-lived be enough to overcome the youthful vigor other teams bring to bear? Will Sorrow Song, the young tiefling playing on the left, be able to pick up that slack and provide all the pressure her seniors need to make plays happen? It’s not out of the question, certainly.

Big Cat On The Prowl
Satyrs are always on the lookout for top-shelf non-human football players, of course. It’s why the MNL had historically one of the highest representations of Equestrian footballers, and why landing Gentle Breeze is such a landmark moment. Now Felinetopia has broken onto the field of play, and the Thepsians pulled out a surprise deal to bring one Minehele Maina aboard. The cheetah is a scant three years old, though Felinetopia physios have assured us this maths out close to twenty when converted to “human years.” Playing from an offensive midfield role, it’ll surely take the rest of the league some time to adapt to the playmaking methodologies of a big cat.

Wyvernscrest started the season tremendously hot—ten games in they had scored eleven more goals than Mariina, their closest competitor—and it seemed that the race for the Hot Hoof would be between the two young teammates that made up their strike team. And while both maintained strong paces throughout the rest of the season, Tjaeder turned back the years in the second half and put on a show for the Mariina faithful.

It's a tight-run race between the defenses of the Skewers and Wyrmstone, but common consensus that the earlier have higher quality outfielders and the defense is lead more by veteran Cosumarite August Chappelle slanted voters towards Qiu Tan as the more standout keeper of the season. Aanderaa certainly still put together a top-notch season in his own right, and any quality defense performances from Farves should be celebrated. Behind the clear-cut top two here there was much more debate on who would take home bronze, and eventually it was settled on local product Makaunrio of Evyr whose performance beyond his years has been a big contribution to the team's surprising success since the advent of the Remnants.

Chappelle appearing here shouldn't be a surprise if you read the previous section, but the voters believed that Niiko Vol managed a greater service to his team. The Vols have often been projected as being better both on the offensive and defensive with the talent at their disposal, yet it's the holding midfielder Niiko that ties everything together and really makes it work. His ability to hold up play and buy time have proven invaluable when the persistent coordination issues the squad suffers from crop up, allowing for safely realigning and refocusing without being broken by opposing aggression. And last but not least, Niikœa can be easy to overlook on a Wyverns side where she's barely the third highest scorer and a sight behind the two to her right. But of course it would be foolish to do so. The speed and incisive pressure she brings on the wing greatly imbalances defenses and allows the greater finishing instincts of Emérico and Martel space to operate at maximum efficiency.

The 1 million NSD Wyvernscrest spent on hot Qad prospect Scottie Kaestre has given infinite return within a single season. Her dramatic injury-time finish secured the draw in a match that had gotten well out of hand for the better team; Evyr's Feline veteran (in cat years) Minehele Maina put in a career-defining performance that very well would have cost her opponents a title that hadn't been in question the day before.

Wyvernscrest held a three-point lead on the Skewers with a towering goal differential advantage of seven. It would require extraordinary circumstances to unseat such a lead in the span of one game... circumstances such as the other hot Qad prospect signed this cycle, Bruul's Genivieve Orville, running circles around a clearly exhausted Harbor defense on the way to a hat-trick. Sprinkle in the other four goals spread across Mead Evergreen, Oberon Qantas, Nlaaro Tjaan, and even one from Cosumarite elder August Chappelle from a corner scramble, and the 7-0 margin of victory meant the impossible was within reach.

When Kzuula Lenrei scored Evyr's second to go up 2-1 on Wyvernscrest, the both leading teams were on 66 points... and the Skewers would edge into the lead by a single point of GD. But it seems it takes a Qad to beat a Qad, and Kaestre's strike put all questions to rest by securing that crucial final point. They had already shared a measure of rivalry being recent National Academy graduates—this can only serve to intensify that, one must imagine.
