Esportivan and Proud.
<drawk> If the entirety of the nation of Ethane was covered in a single cubic foot of Ethane on its surface, lighting it all on fire would cause a 5.44 megaton blast.
Best WorldVision Finish: 2nd. Best World Cup Finish: Quarter-Finals. Best KPB Rank: 8th. Best WBC Finish: 1st.

League Preview

The Ethanian league system, after undergoing a thorough revamp, is ready to undergo its fifth season. With classic Explosive League teams combined with a number of new teams into the league, along with a reduction in the number of league tiers, this should be an interesting season to watch.

Only 5 matches into the season and a dynamic narrative can already be seen developing in the league. Of course, with only 5 matches played, it can be difficult to make any completely solid observations about where things are going, but some conclusions can be drawn - although these conclusions can be changed with later developments.

One of the most surprising observations that can be made from the first 5 matches is the rather underwhelming start to the season New Sarum have had. Billed to finish in 4th place, giving them a position in the Globe Cup, their start has said everything will happen but this. It all started in their first match which they lost to Deloitte - predicted to finish 16th - by a rather confident 3-0 scoreline, the Ethanian national Julian West delivering with 2 goals for his new club. They redeemed themselves a little against Gretham in match 2, but considering how poorly ranked this team was, it wasn't much of a redemption. Match 3 brought another disappointing loss - 2 goals to 4 away against Hullbury Town. Match 4 was a little more comforting for New Sarum - they held Letson Town to a 2-2 draw, and match 5 brought them victory against Llandudno Local. However, a worrying pattern emerges in these matches which could spell disaster for New Sarum throughout the season; all of these teams bar Letson Town are predicted to finish outside the top 10 with 2 teams in the relegation fight. If New Sarum is losing against teams like Deloitte, then what does it say about the rest of the matches the team will have to play, especially against more top-side teams.

Letson Town will also be hoping to improve. They are expected to be fighting for the title with Loconstead United again this season and have not had the strongest of starts to prove that they are up to that challenge. While Loconstead United are currently in second, having won 4 games and drawing 1 out of the 5 games played so far, Letson Town is 5 points behind with 2 wins, 2 draws and a loss. An improvement will be needed to keep up with Loconstead United. Other teams that need to improve are Bourne River, who are languishing in 15th with only 1 win and 3 losses, and Llandudno Local who currently sit in 19th with no wins and 4 losses.

On the more positive side of things, the success of Merseyshore Dockside is something to be praised. Merseyshore Dockside is the continuation of Merseyshore City from the Star Leagues who finished 20th last season but weren't relegated because only the top tier of the Star Leagues was completed last season before the revamp was ordered. This background didn't paint their chances this season in a good light, especially considering not many changes were made, meaning they were predicted to finish this season in 17th. Their start has suggested they could do better. Their 2-2 draw against Letson Town on match day 2 and their 2-0 victory against Mansestra does suggest the team has it in them to perform above expectations. As long as they can keep their performance up for the rest of the season, they could surprise us all and finish in the top 10.

Merseyshore Dockside, while being the most surprising of the success stories so far, is not the only 1. Blashpool City have put on a good start, winning 4 games and drawing only 1. Carredington and Hullbury Town have also had rather decent starts to the season (5th and 6th respectfully) with 3 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss.

10 matches in and a comprehensive picture of team performances this season are starting to emerge. There seems to be a pattern of top-ranked teams doing a little worse than predicted at this stage, while lower-ranked teams seem to be doing a little better than predicted although this is not a uniform pattern and there are outliers.

The current leaders of the league - Birdingstone United and Blashpool City - are overperforming expectations at this stage of the season, although I expect that they will begin to drop off. Birdingstone United have consistently beat teams that are lower-ranked than them, but when it comes to facing the highly ranked teams, they tend to lose as shown by their loss to Letson Town in their 10th match. Bar 2, all Blashpool City's victories have been against teams predicted to finish in the bottom half of the table, and most of them have been against bottom-5 teams. While their victories are good, their easy start to the league means that these victories don't tell of the wider narrative as we haven't seen much in the way of Blashpool performing well against a highly ranked team. This doesn't mean that their momentum will disappear, all it means is that we must be cautious in predicting a good season for Blashpool City as they have had a relatively easy start to the season and are yet to prove themselves against a strong opponent with a victory.

Mansestra are also doing relatively well for themselves after 10 matches have been played. They've won 6 out of their 10 games, putting them into 4th in the league standings - 6 places above the predictions for them. Carredington and Hullbury Town also continue to overperform, although they have slipped a little. Both teams seem almost intent to try to stick close to each other on the league table, with Carredington above Hullbury Town (swapped from 5 matches ago).

Merseyshore Dockside still keeps their successful start up as well - they are currently 6 positions above their predicted league finishing position. They have slipped a little also from their 9th place 5 matches ago, but their current 11th place is still notably better than their 20th place finish as Merseyshore City last season.

Still, New Sarum underperforms. Now, they find themselves down in 13th - 1 place below their rival team Old Sarum, who are also underperforming. New Sarum is currently 9 positions below their prediction and target for this season. Their start - 4 wins, 4 losses, and 2 draws - suggests that the team may have some problems this season with their performance, especially with unity. Whether it's an issue with the leadership or the players, that is yet to be seen, but with their current performances, they could be at risk of finishing in the bottom half of the table, far from where they would have hoped to finish the season, fighting for a Globe Cup position. The problem isn't with scoring - they have currently only scored 5 goals less than the top scorer in the league - but with their defence. While Blashpool City has scored 20 goals, they have only conceded 8. In contrast, New Sarum has scored 19 goals, but they have conceded 18 goals. This suggests a large issue with defence which will need to be rectified to improve.

Letson Town will still be hoping to improve in the standings. They have moved up a position from 7th to 6th in the league, but with them predicted to finish second and hoping they can take first place, they have a lot of improvement to do. The issue isn't that major - they are only 5 points behind the leaders - but if they continue on their current path - 1-1 draws to Old Sarum in match 6, for example, in a game that they should be winning - then that gap will be widening.

Most Goals Scored (24) - Carredington (7th)

15 matches into the season - the teams have almost all played each other once - and there seems to have been a trend towards normalisation of the results, a turn towards what the predictions actually said.

Birdingstone United and Blashpool City have relinquished their top spots in the league to fall back to 2nd and 4th place respectfully. Blashpool City lost 2 of their matches out of the last 5 - 2-0 against Letson Town and 3-1 against Loconstead United - to push them back to 4th. These results show that despite their strong start to the season, they are unable to make the step up quite yet to a top-2 team, failing against the best teams in the league. They do have a chance of a relatively decent finishing position in the table, but because of their record against the lower-ranked teams, not their performance against the higher-ranked teams in the league. Birdingstone United didn't suffer as much. They only dropped 1 position to 2nd in the league, winning 3 of their games, drawing 1, and losing 1 out of the past 5. Birdingstone's loss came at home against Loconstead United (a 1-2 loss), showing Loconstead as a formidable team whom you are not safe from wherever you are, and serious title challengers. The most disappointing result for Birdingstone came in match 15, however, with their draw against Merseyshore Forest; 1-1 against one of the new teams to The Flame League. This match suggests Birdingstone United aren't quite title-winning material yet, if they make these mistakes when the pressure is on. If they had won this match, they would still be in first place in the table for now.

Merseyshore Dockside continue to hold their ground mid-table, despite being noted at the start of this season as a possible relegation candidate. The season is far from over, but the way they have been playing in contrast to the bottom 5 suggests that have a strong chance of staying up. If you take into account that the current gap of 10 points between Merseyshore Dockside and the relegation zone is bound to widen, then it looks likely at this stage that Dockside will be staying up for another season. They haven't had the strongest 5 matches, but it is 0-0 draws against the likes of Blashpool City that allow them to stay in the mid-table and in safety.

New Sarum is a completely different story. Where optimism is rife in the Merseyshore Dockside camp, there is an extremely negative atmosphere clouding the King Edward VI Stadium. Recent results have pushed them down yet another position in the league to 14th, while their rivals have gone the opposite direction. New Sarum find themselves in 14th, only 7 points above the relegation zone, when they should be fighting for the Globe Cup spots - 13 points ahead of them. Between matches 11 and 15, they won only 1 of their games and lost 4 of them; not the sort of performance you would expect from a team predicted to finish the season in 4th. They've had rather disappointing losses all round, but the 7-3 loss against Old Sarum and the 3-4 loss to Barsley have really hit hard. Their performance has been worse these past 5 matches because they have faced more of the top teams in this period, but the fact they had only won 4 matches before match day 11 suggests that the problem isn't the difficulty of the opposition; it is an inherent issue within the team which needs to be fixed before success can be found again. Based on their performance so far, a bottom-half finish is looking more and more likely, as is the possibility that they could be in the relegation battle if their performance continues to decline.

Just over half-way through the season - 20 matches - and the teams are beginning to settle within their positions in the league; they are becoming entrenched and fighting for position. Some interesting dynamics have emerged, and a title fight has really actually properly begun between the two that were expected to be fighting for the title, with Birdingstone United mixed up in the fight.

Loconstead United have held on to their top position in the league, but their stumble has given Letson Town the chance to practically catch up with them. Loconstead United's 1-1 draw against Deloitte aided, but it was their 2-4 loss to Letson Town while playing at home that allowed Letson to make up the difference. After match 15, there was a 3 point difference between Letson Town in 3rd place, and Loconstead United in 1st place. After 20 matches, there is now only a 1 point difference between Letson Town in 3rd place and Loconstead United in 1st place. Birdingstone United sits in second on 44 points, ahead of Letson due to goal differential.

Carredington have probably been the most surprising team across the 5 previous matches. After 15 matches, Carredington sat in 8th place on 25 points. After 20 matches, they are now in 4th place on 37 points. They made up this difference by winning 4 out of the 5 previous games they played; the only game they lost was a 3-0 whooping away at Merseyshore Dockside. That is placed them right back into a place where they can contend for Globe Cup positions, although they are a whole 7 points behind 3rd place and are threatened by South Saints who sit only 2 points behind them.

The patterns that were highlighted earlier with Merseyshore Dockside and New Sarum continue. New Sarum remain in 14th, having only won 2 of their previous 5 games, and Dockside drop only 1 place to 12th, having won and lost 2 games, and drawn 1 over the past 5 games - a rate of wins to losses that seems to be consistent throughout much of the league so far for them.

Loconstead United: Top of the league and feel at home. They look like strong contenders for the title, and they seem to want it. They had a decent start and sustained their performance throughout so far.

Birdingstone United: They've had an amazing first half of the season, outperforming most expectations. I won't say they're title challengers, as they are probably going to decline here on out, but they are one to watch for the lower Globe Cup places.

Letson Town: The start was a little disappointing, but they picked up the slack and are now right back into the title fight. Don't expect them to give up their title easily; Letson Town and Loconstead United are the ones to watch for that title battle.

Carredington: They started off well, but then started to drop slowly down towards mid-table. However, across the past 5 matches, they have put themselves right back into the Globe Cup spots. There seems to be 2 versions of this team, and the one that prevails will dictate where this team finishes in the league.

South Saints: They've been relatively consistent in their position throughout the season so far, and I don't see that changing. They are predicted to finish 3rd, and that is a possibility for them. South Saints will be fighting for 3rd, 4th, or 5th, and therefore will be fighting for the lower Globe Cup places.

Blashpool City: They had a really strong start to the league, but across the past few matches they have been in decline. They are looking to finish in the top half of the league, but it is unlikely they will be making the Globe Cup.

Mansestra: This team seems to ebb and flow, but they have been relatively consistent. I can't see much change from them and reckon they will be finishing the league in a similar position to the one they are in now.

Old Sarum: They started off with an average position, but then declined to lower-mid table. However, they have pushed right back into the top half of the table. Whether that push continues, or they settle where they are, is yet to be seen.

Newton Castle FC: This team seems to be having a relatively decent season with good performances from the players. They will be finishing mid-table, but I'm not sure whether that'll be just above or below the middle.

Bourne River: They had a disappointing start and are still slightly disappointing, but they have tried to rebuild and progress up the league. I predict they will finish just within the top half of the league, unless they improve some more between now and the end of the season.

Hullbury Town: They started off way above expectations across the first 5 matches, placing themselves in decline, but they seem to be moving back towards where they are expected to finish ever since those first matches. I predict they will finish around about their pre-season prediction (12th).

Merseyshore Dockside: They started off astonishingly well, pushing into the top half of the league, before falling back just a little. However, they are still in the right place to be outperforming all expectations. They were predicted to be in the relegation battle, but I reckon they will manage to avoid it.

Llandudno Local: Their start to the season was pretty much abysmal - 1 win in 5 games. However, they very quickly rebounded, and now find themselves pushing towards the middle of the league. They won't quite reach mid-league, and will probably finish around 15th.

New Sarum: It started off atrociously and it has only gone downhill. A team predicted to be entering the Globe Cup is now looking down towards the relegation zone rather than up towards the Globe Cup. A little improvement and they'll easily avoid relegation, but they will be having an awful season nonetheless.

Swanmouth City: Overperforming slightly, but not quite clear of the relegation zone. They will be caught up in the relegation battle, but they should avoid relegation this season.

Merseyshore Forest: Not quite as good as hoped, but still relatively good. They should avoid relegation, but they may just get caught in the battle if they're not careful.

Deloitte: They've had some surprisingly good results and some surprisingly bad results. They will be involved in the relegation battle and could avoid it, but they are one of the potential candidates for relegation.

Swanmouth United: Improve slightly and they avoid relegation. Continue as normal and they will be relegated. Significant change is needed, but they can avoid it.

Barsley: They may be scoring goals, but they're also letting them in, and far too much. They have conceded the most goals by far - 23 goals in fact - and this puts them at a massive disadvantage. They are likely to be relegated unless significant changes are made.

Gretham: Can you avoid the inevitable? It is possible for them to avoid the inevitable this season, but the way things are going, I'm not sure they will be involved in the relegation battle, because there won't be much of a battle for them. 99.9% chance of them being relegated this season. Good luck Gretham.

25 matches into the season and Letson Town have finally surpassed Birdingstone United to claim second place behind Loconstead United. Letson are right on the tail of Loconstead United, who are engaged in what is expected to be a really close battle for first place. Letson Town remain only 1 point behind them, determined to take that top spot. Letson Town are yet to lead, as the top spot has been switching mostly between Loconstead and Birdingstone, although because of slip ups by Letson, Loconstead have held it securely for the past 5 matches.

Carredington has also slipped back a little from their surge to 4th place, having only won 2 of their previous 5 games. This will be disappointing for the team, who would have hoped to keep up the momentum, rather than lose it as soon as they gained it. They will be looking to fight back across the 13 remaining matches of this league, and it certainly is possible for them - they are only 1 point behind 4th and the Globe Cup position that brings.

Merseyshore Dockside have dropped a little more - they now sit in 13th, only 4 places above their predicted position. This may seem disappointing, considering how well they were doing, but it is their start that has enabled them to move towards safety and away from a potential relegation battle. It is the fact they are 13 points above the relegation zone which is not disappointing; it is looking increasingly likely that Merseyshore Dockside will be staying in The Flame League for next season.

New Sarum have been improving a little. They have now moved up to 12th, instead of 14th. It is doubtful they will be looking towards the relegation zone with fear now, but at this point it is likely they will have to settle for a mid-table finish. Over the past 5 matches, New Sarum went without loss - a massive improvement from their earlier performances. Admittedly, 3 of the 5 matches were draws, but they are positive results for New Sarum - when you're record is 7-2-11 and you were predicted to finish 4th in the league, 2 wins and 3 draws doesn't seem that bad after all.

Deloitte pushes themselves away from the relegation fight with 2 wins and a draw. However, all teams in the relegation fight had at least 1 positive result, bringing a few other teams into the relegation fight, expanding the pool of candidates for relegation. Gretham is still the only team that I can definitively say will most likely be relegated at the end of the season. I expect that to become clearer as the 13 matches left tick down.

There is definitely less movement in the league now as the teams consolidate their positions as we move into the final 13 matches. There is a clear leader pack - Birdingstone, in 3rd place, have a 5 point cushion to South Saints in 4th - and there appears to be a clear relegation pact, although where this ends is less definitive.

Most Goals Scored (59) - Loconstead United (1st)
Least Goals Scored (13) - Gretham (20th)

With 8 matches left in this season, one team has taken a surprising turn. New Sarum.

New Sarum, after having such an atrocious start, have managed to move back into the top half of the league against all odds. There were 6 points between them and tenth, and with their performances in the league before these matches, it seemed like that wouldn't be possible. However, a surprising turn of events has propelled them into 9th in the league. New Sarum won all 5 games, and it doesn't matter that these teams were relatively low ranked teams in comparison, the fact they beat them suggests a real turnaround for the team - one which may see the manager just about avoid being replaced at the end of the season. This has moved them above their rivals - New Sarum - who have been stuck in 10th place for a while, and are likely to stay around there. We are yet to see whether New Sarum's momentum will continue, but unfortunately, it will be too little, too late for their Globe Cup hopes by a country mile.

Blashpool have also moved back into the Globe Cup spots. They won 4 of their previous 5 games, and drew one of them, to regain their position and to overtake Birdingstone United. They will be attempting to hold this position to make it into the Globe Cup. Notably, they drew against Letson Town, holding them from taking the top spot in the league.

In the battle for the title, Letson Town have moved yet closer to holding that title again. They temporarily claimed in on matchday 28, when they beat Barsley 2 goals to 1, while Loconstead lost 2-0 to South Saints, but Letson's draw combined with Loconstead's 1-0 victory against Barsley allowed Loconstead to draw level again, and reclaim the lead through goal differential. The story seems to be that Loconstead is trying to hold ground while Letson is slowly creeping forward. If that continues, then a Letson Town victory will be coming up. That is far from guaranteed as you can see though - Loconstead United currently leads. One thing is certain - the top 2 are in a battle of their own. Third place - now Blashpool City - remains 5 points behind Letson Town in second, and it is likely it will probably stay that way.

Moving on to the relegation battle and one word seems to sum it up: consistency. There has been no real movement over the past 5 matches between teams. However, Gretham has won and drawn a game while Barsley lost all 5 matches. This has allowed Gretham to catch up to only 1 point behind Barsley, and now 7 points from escaping relegation. That is probably a stretch for them to make up with only 8 matches left, but they could just make it. It is clear that Deloitte have escaped the relegation zone battle. They are now 9 points ahead of the relegation zone and continue to advance. This leaves 16 through 20 left in the battle - Merseyshore Forest down to Gretham.

Most Goals Scored (64) - Loconstead United (1st)
Least Goals Scored (18) - Gretham (20th)
Most Goals Conceded (107) - Barsley (19th)
Least Goals Conceded (22) - South Saints (5th)

With only 3 matches remaining in The Flame League, it is very likely that Letson Town will win the title, and enter the Champion's Cup. In the three games remaining, there are 9 points available, and Letson Town sit 5 points ahead in first place.

On match day 30, Loconstead United led The Flame League by goal differential, with both Loconstead United and Letson Town tied on 63 points each. Letson very rapidly asserted a lead on match day 1 with a narrow victory against Bourne River - Ramon Wilkins scoring the only goal in the 71st minute - while Loconstead drew 2-2 against Blashpool City, who ae also pushing for a Globe Cup position (a very close fight between Blashpool City, Birdingstone United, South Saints, Mansestra, Carredington, and Bourne River). Letson Town were able to extend that lead to 5 points with a narrow 3-4 victory away against Carredington. Loconstead United lost their game against Blashpool City 1-0, allowing Letson to move 5 points clear and allowing Blashpool to move within 2 points of them. Everything seemed to be going wrong for Loconstead United right at the end. Letson Town were then able to move 7 points clear at the top of the table with a 4-3 victory at home against Deloitte, while Loconstead United were only able to take away a point from their draw at home against Bourne River. Loconstead appeared to be crumbling under the pressure and throwing away their chance at winning the title, moving into third in the league behind Blashpool City. However, they slipped back into second with a victory against Carredington (the goals for keeping them ahead of Blashpool), while Letson could only draw away against Gretham - yes, bottom-of-the-league Gretham - to keep Loconstead in the title race. Now it appeared to be Letson cracking under pressure. Both Loconstead United and Letson Town won their games on match day 35, keeping the title race alive - and that coveted position in the Champion's Cup. With only 3 matches left, it is likely Letson Town will win the league. But if they were to crumble under pressure, then it is up for Loconstead United's taking. 2 wins for Loconstead and 2 losses for Letson and they take the lead.

Meanwhile, in the relegation battle, there are already 2 teams that are guaranteed relegation. Gretham does pass Barsley into 19th in the league but to no avail - there are not enough points available for Gretham to surpass Swanmouth City, sitting on 29 points. As for the final place, it does appear likely that Swanmouth United will be the third team relegated this season, but it is not over for them yet. They are 5 points behind both Swanmouth City and Merseyshore Forest, and 8 points behind Deloitte, all of whom are technically within reach. While it is unlikely, it is not over yet.

Most Goals Scored (74) - New Sarum (10th)
Least Goals Scored (21) - Gretham (19th)
Most Goals Conceded (131) - Barsley (20th)
Least Goals Conceded (24) - South Saints (4th)

FLAME LEAGUE

Match Day Thirty Six

Swanmouth United 1–1 Letson Town
Superintendent van Nifterick (APX) '42 // Ramon Wilkins '83

Hullbury Town 1–1 Llandudno Local
Declan Smith '16 // Zachary Daniel '31

Gretham 0–2 Loconstead United
Scott Burgess '37, Grady Stevens '61

Deloitte 3–3 Mansestra
Nathaniel Fernandez '21, '73, 'Todd Burks '79 // Samuel Mitchell '38, '65, Jim Singleton '87

Carredington 2–0 Merseyshore Dockside
Alfred Guerra '49, Nevis Holmes '62

Bourne River 1–0 Merseyshore Forest
Jesse Bradley '19

Blashpool City 2–1 New Sarum
Wayne Peterson '82, Douglas Gonzalez '86 // Dickon Wake '29

Birdingstone United 5–0 Newton Castle FC
Robson Wright '23, Keith Snyder '41, Alexander Webster '62, '68,' 79

Barsley 2–4 Old Sarum
Johnnie Frye '38, '72 // Bradley Herrmann '12, Al Ja '29, Kristian Harper '64, '85

Swanmouth City 0–1 South Saints
Jesse Carter '67

Letson Town suffers a disappointing draw to Swanmouth United, a team likely to be relegated from The Flame League within 2 matches. This is worrying for Letson Town, as it allows Loconstead United to move within 3 points of the title - if both teams end up on the same number of points at the end of the season, then Loconstead United will win due to a superior points differential.

Hullbury Town and Llandudno Local also tie up their game 1-1. This doesn't play a significant role in any title or relegation race, and doesn't really affect the results of the league. Llandudno Local is already guaranteed 14th in the league. Hullbury Town would have moved up if victorious.

Loconstead United, away to Gretham, was able to secure a very important 0-2 win against already relegated Gretham. This moves them to within 3 points of the title; all they need is for Letson Town to slip up once, and then they win The Flame League. This doesn't affect Gretham's position in the league, as Barsley also loses.

Deloitte and Mansestra tie up their game 3-3. This, along with Swanmouth United's draw, moves Deloitte to safety. Deloitte will not be relegated this season. It does mean Mansestra is stuck in 8th this match, behind Carredington who also has 60 points.

Carredington beat Merseyshore Dockside 2-0. This is of no significant importance, but it does move Carredington up from 8th to 7th, passing Mansestra. Merseyshore Dockside remain in position, but their work is done; they are easily safe from relegation.

Bourne River won at home against Merseyshore Forest 1-0; a significant result in the relegation battle. This means Forest is not yet safe. If Swanmouth United gets more than 4 points in the next 2 matches, and Swanmouth City gets a point, with Forest losing both, then Forest will be relegated to The Fire League.

Blashpool City beating New Sarum 2-1 is not a significant result for New Sarum; they remain in 10th place, behind Old Sarum, although it does make it very difficult to beat Old Sarum (their rivals) this season in the standings. It is significant in the race for the Glove Cup, however. It maintains their position in 3rd. The only way they won't make it to the Globe Cup is if they lose both remaining matches, and Birdingstone United manages to overcome the 6 point goal differential.

Birdingstone United destroyed Newton Castle FC at home, preventing them from moving into tenth, and keeping Birdingstone in the Globe Cup race. Their victory - and large victory - means they only need 2 points to obtain a Globe Cup position, and they can still come third and knock Blashpool out of the Globe Cup.

Barsley -already relegated - was beaten by Old Sarum at home 2-4, allowing Old Sarum to extend their lead over New Sarum, almost guaranteeing they would beat their rivals this season.

South Saints narrowly defeated Swanmouth City 0-1 away. This is a significant result in 2 races. In the relegation battle, the defeat of Swanmouth City means they are not safe from relegation yet - Swanmouth United can overtake them and relegate them if they win more than 4 points, and City loses both their remaining games or draws and loses. The victory for South Saints also maintains their position in 4th - a Globe Cup spot - preventing Birdingstone from overtaking them in the standings, and keeping them within distance of finishing in their predicted 3rd place position.

Match Day Thirty Seven

Swanmouth City 0–3 Swanmouth United
Layla (DAI) '43, '79, Joseph Owen '57

South Saints 3–2 Barsley
Harlen Blakely '44, Jarold Denmark '71, Stephen Campbell '90+2 // Koen Beck '29, Kofi Compton '77

Old Sarum 0–2 Birdingstone United
Russell Murphy '64, Alexander Webster '81

Newton Castle FC 1–2 Blashpool City
Harley Windhausen '6 // Kylan Parks '68, Agueda Perea (OSR) '72

New Sarum 1–3 Bourne River
Vernon Flick '27 // Alex Brown '68, Jacob Henley '79, Jenna Berger '83

Merseyshore Forest 1–4 Carredington
Trudy Governor '63 // Dexter Stevens '13, Graham O'Neill '26, '35, Nevis Holmes '74

Merseyshore Dockside 1–1 Deloitte
Trey Shrieve '56 // Andy Mansell '49

Mansestra 1–0 Gretham
Samuel Mitchell '13

Loconstead United 5–2 Hullbury Town
Reece Cox '15, Dmitri Lisov (SAV) '39, '52, James Higgins '60, Bennie Barnes '73 // Declan Smith '76, Keziah Salt '82

Llandudno Local 3–6 Letson Town
Malachy Quinlan '43, Ryan Frost (RIT) '52, Adam Burton '59 // Darren Clarke '10, Kirk Acosta '16, Andrew Biley '30, Joel Vega '65, Muhammad Kerr '79, Dex Temple (ESH) '89

In a match that completely shakes up the relegation battle before the final match, Swanmouth United - in a last act of desparation to reach for safety - beat Swanmouth City 0-3 (United away). This moves Swanmouth United to 1 point behind Swanmouth City - 1 point behind safety. This is significant, as if United win their final match and either City or Forest don't win, then United is safe.

South Saints were able to pip relegated Barsley to a victory with an added time goal by Stephen Campbell in the 92nd minute. This guarantees a Globe Cup spot for the South Saints, meaning they will be represented on an international level this season.

Birdingstone United also win away against Old Sarum 0-2, but because South Saints won their match, Birdingstone have no hope of making it to the Globe Cup. This match was of no real significance to Old Sarum.

Blashpool City defeated Newton Castle FC 1-2, maintaining their position in 3rd place. This guarantees their Globe Cup position, but also means that South Saints needs to win to finish 3rd.

Bourne River away beat New Sarum 3-1. This prevents New Sarum from beating rivals Old Sarum in the standings this season - a rather disappointing turn of events for them - but also guarantees 6th place for Bourne River, and a potential 5th place if Bourne River wins and Birdingstone doesn't.

Carredington away beat Merseyshore Forest 4-1. This allowed Carredington to hold 7th place in the standings. However, the significance of this match is gained because of the Swanmouth rivalry match outcome. To be safe from relegation, Forest needs to either win their game, or hope Swanmouth United or City lose their final game. If Forest loses/draws and City and United win, then Forest will be relegated.

Merseyshore Dockside drew Deloitte 1-1. This holds no significance really.

Mansestra beat Gretham 1-0 at home. This keeps Mansestra in 8th but on the tail of Carredington in 7th. It guarantees Mansestra 8th place in the league, as Old Sarum can no longer catch them with the remaining points available.

Loconstead United beat Hullbury Town in a very significant result. This bolsters their goal difference, considering the final match for the title, but also keeps them within a win from the title. This leaves it down to the last match of the season to decide who the victor is, although Loconstead HAS to win to win the title.

Letson Town away beat Llandudno Local 3-6. At this point, goal differential doesn't matter for Letson Town. This win keeps them 3 points ahead of Loconstead United, and as long as they win or draw their final match, then they win The Flame League. However, if they lose their final match, then they will finish second.

Barsley 1–4 Swanmouth City
Lyndon Caudell '85 // Jack Smith '21, Wilmer Jaurequi '43, '69, '76

Swanmouth United drew at home against Llandudno Local. This means that as long as Swanmouth City and Merseyshore Forest can end the season with a greater goal differential than Swanmouth United, they are safe from relegation.

Hullbury Town drew against Mansestra, moving Hullbury up to 11th in the standings.
This has no affect on Mansestra's standings as Carredington also drew.

Merseyshore Dockside away beat Gretham 0-1. This holds no significance, and changes no standings in the league.

Deloitte drew against Merseyshore Forest 1-1. This result, because of Swanmouth United's draw, means that Merseyshore Forest is safe from relegation and is staying up. If Swanmouth City draws their game, or holds a higher goal differential at the end of the season, then Swanmouth United will be relegated.

Carredington drew with New Sarum in a goal bonanza, 5-5 the end score. Because of Mansestra's draw, this guarantees Carredington 7th place in the league. This also allows New Sarum to remain safely in 10th place in the league.

Bourne River beat Newton Castle FC 3-0 at home. This prevents Newton from moving up to 10th in the league standings, and in fact moves them down to 12th. This results also gave Bourne River a chance of moving into 5th, but Birdingstone's result prevented this.

Blashpool City beat Old Sarum 1-0/. This secures Blashpool 3rd place in the league.

Birdingstone United at home beat South Saints 2-0. This maintains Birdingstone's 5th position in the league, while also preventing South Saints from taking 3rd in the league,
although Blashpool's victory prevented this anyway.

Swanmouth City away defeated Barsley 4-1. This is an extremely significant result. Thi provides City with the 3 points needed for safety. This means that Swanmouth United,
despite the fightback at the end of the season, is relegated to The Fire League for next season on the final match day.

League Preview

We're back for the second season of the revamped league. After an exciting season of football, with Loconstead United taking league victory from the grasp of Letson Town on the final matchday where they played against each other, and a decent relegation scrap between the two teams from Swanmouth, we can only hope that this season of football has just as much excitement in store for us. Unfortunately, in this league preview we will not be disclosing full rosters due to a lack of time in this broadcasting segment, but we will announce all the new transfers into the teams, and the transfers out. The full preview should return for next season.

Birdingstone United
Birdingstone United had a relatively decent season of football. They finished where predicted in 5th place. However, the team would have been annoyed that they just missed out on spots in The Globe Cup, which they were 1 point behind 4th place. This season, they will be striving to make it into The Globe Cup, and they should have a decent chance of doing so.
IN: Cassidy Hasek - CB (NPH); Harriette Meadows - LCB (CMT); Susy Walkins - GK (CMT)

Blashpool City
Blashpool City were predicted to finish 7th in last season's standings in the preview. However, they led a mighty charge in the season and managed to gain a position in The Globe Cup, finishing in a mighty 3rd position behind Loconstead United and Letson Town. Losing Albert Diaz may have some impact on the team, but this season they will be striving to retain that position in The Globe Cup and make at least the top 4 in the league; this will be no easy feat for them though.
OUT: Albert Diaz - CDM > Welanduz Vadshult (BYN)

Bourne River
They finished 2 places above their predicted position of 8th last season, but 2 places below their finishing position in the season before. They will be gutted that they didn't reach the top 5 last season and have been unable to replicate their Globe Cup performances, but they will be back on the hunt for a Globe Cup position again this season.
OUT: Daniel Baker - RB > Olask Islanders (COS)

Carredington
An improvement on their previous form and expected position for last season, they managed to finish in 7th last season; a position not to be snuffed at. They will have been happy with their performance and are looking for at least another top 10 position, possibly even a top 6 if they get enough decent results in. With little to no change to the team from last season, their lacklustre defence may return again. If this is the case, they may not perform as well as they hope.

Deloitte
A newcomer to the Flame League last season, they engaged in a mighty battle to avoid relegation. They were predicted to finish just outside the relegation zone and finished roughly around there. They will be looking to consolidate their position in the league and make a few advances towards the top 12 this season on their limited budget, but they are at risk of relegation if they underperform slightly. The newly promoted teams will be hot on their heels hoping to survive as well, so it could be a pretty rough battle towards the end for them.

Hullbury Town
Hullbury Town appear to slowly be slipping down the table. In the season before last they finished in 9th place, and this season just gone they finished in 11th place. With no real moves in the transfer window for this team, they will have to try to stop the rot from within. It isn't looking good for the team with ageing players and no real motivation from the manager or the owner to improve the team. They shouldn't be in any relegation battles, but they will probably finish lower than last season.

Letson Town
They had a thrilling season. They were leading for a fair stretch of it, and have shown that they are capable of winning the league again if they put their minds to it. However, they will have been so gutted to lose to Loconstead United in their final match of the season and give them the league victory down to goal differential. They will have been kicking themselves. Their only hope is to right the wrongs of last season and lead a crusade to take the title from Loconstead United in this season.

Llandudno Local
A fairly consistent team. They have finished 14th for 2 seasons running now, just avoiding the relegation battle but not quite getting far enough to challenge for a top 10 position. In their first season (unofficial) they also finished 15th, so they have a track record of finishing in the middle of the botton half of the table. No different is expected this season. Everyone is expecting Llandudno to just about avoid the relegation battle but not challenge for any higher, ie finish around 14th. Their loss of 2 decent players may just push them down a little though.
OUT: Zachary Daniel - CF > Blue Coast 1981 (PCR); Iwan Roberts - LM > Deprí Lanar Red Hawks (CMT)

Loconstead United
Possibly the most consistent and best team overall in the Flame League. There has not been a season in the entire 5 season history of the Flame League (old and revamped) where they have finished outside the top 3. Last season was their second win and the other 3 times they have finished 3rd. They are not looking likely to let off soon and only a strong challenge from another team will knock them off that top spot. There is always a chance though... Obviously expected to win this season as well.
IN: James Lee - LW (DUN); Alexandria Chesser - ST/LW (CMT)

Mansestra
A slightly above average performance for this team saw them advance to 8th from their 11th place finish the season before. They look to have some fight in them and will probably end up in the top 10 again this season.
IN: Senura Portendorfer - CM (APX); Deon Partell - ST (SEM)

Merseyshore Dockside
With the revamp of the league, Dockside were handed a gift as they were supposed to have been relegated as of the season previous to the one just played. As such, everyone was expecting them to get relegated or be close to relegation again for the past season. They overperformed marvellously though, managing to finish in 13th place, comfortably avoiding the relegation battle. They will be hoping to maintain their trajectory and finish in the top 10 this season; this may be a little too ambitious

Merseyshore Forest
This new team to The Flame League with the revamp were expected to outperform their fellow Merseyshore rivals, but they failed to do so. They had a rather underwhelming season, and actually ended up getting tied up in the relegation battle. They were slipping towards the end of the season and it appeared like they might be in a spot of bother, spiralling towards a crash into the league below, but they managed to recover from their fall and finished just outside the relegation zone. This season, no one can see that much improvement from them as they were very quiet in the transfer window, so we could see them relegated this season.

New Sarum
New Sarum had a shockingly disappointing last season. All the predictions were saying a top 5 finish, probably even a position in The Globe Cup. However, they were struggling from the offset in defence, with little preventing teams scoring against them despite the high number of goals their strikers were scoring themselves. They ended up finishing in 10th place, even below their lower-quality rivals Old Sarum (which gifted OS some bragging rights for sure). There isn't a recovery in sight this season either; they may end up struggling to finish in the top 10 even.

Newton Castle FC
They finished rougly were they were expected to last season, maybe a little lower. This season they will be hoping to finish within the top 10 of the league, although this may be a challenge for them.

Old Sarum
Not quite what they were expected to achieve (6th), but their 9th place position was a large achievement over their previous 16th. They will be fighting for a top 10 position this season as well, and at least to beat New Sarum in the final standings and in their matches. Their loss of Harper will certainly not help though.
OUT: Kristian Harper - RF > Falourr (EUR)

South Saints
They finished slightly below where they were predicted to finish, but they still made it into The Globe Cup so there won't really be any disappointment for the team. They will be hoping to replicate last season and possibly even improve on it, fighting for at least a top 3 finish and possibly hoping to challenge for a win.
IN: Sonja Dreyer - LM (NPH)
OUT: Bruce Washington - LB > Z'ai'ai Mountaineers (CMT)

Dovertown
They finished top of The Fire League last season and now have the challenge of ensuring they don't get immediately relegated back into that league. They led a strong performance last season, and while they don't expect to be challenging for any decent finish in The Flame League, they will at least be looking to stay up this season. Their defence may be an issue.

Rhayader
The second automatically promoted team from The Fire League to The Flame League, Rhayader will be in for a challenge as well this season. Their strong defence will look to capitalise on the strong team's weaknesses in The Flame League. They will be hoping to survive as well this season; their aims are nothing more than to stay up.

Ketley
Getting to The Flame League through the playoffs, Ketley is certainly the weakest of the three newly promoted teams. Out of all the teams, Ketley is the one least likely to survive; they have the weakest offence out of all 3 of the teams. Considering the higher quality of The Flame League, they may struggle to score many goals this season. Their aim is also to stay up.

Swanmouth City
They just managed to survive after a ferocious battle with Swanmouth United, their rivals. Don't expect any fireworks this season though; their appaling offence and defence won't have done much in the way of improving over summer.
Esportivan and Proud.

AND WE'RE AWAY AT THE RACES!!! Loconstead United and Letson Town are battling this season for that top spot. Loconstead snatched it from Letson's hands in the final match of last season, and Letson Town are determined to claim that title back with a victory this season. And they've both started off well in the first match, keeping it tight in the second as well, BUT LETSON HAVE SLIPPED UP IN THE THIRD MATCH. LOCONSTEAD ARE OUT IN FRONT! Oh yeah, and they've slipped up in the 4th match. And the 5th. And the 6th, 8th, and 10th match. Yeah.

At this point, I don't quite want to say the Letson Town vs Loconstead United battle is over, but the Letson Town vs Loconstead United battle is over.

On the one hand, Loconstead United have won every single game so far this season. They've scored an average of 3 goals a game, conceding 1.2 goals a game; not the best defence but certainly the best in offence. They are dominating; leading by 4 points ahead of Blashpool City after 10 matches - the only other team to have not lost a game yet.

On the other hand, Letson Town are struggling. They are sitting down in 8th on only 16 points - almost half the points of Loconstead United. They're only just inside the top 10 - lose 3 points and they're in 11th place. They only have a goal differential of +4; 21 goals scored to 17 goals conceded - an awful ratio for a team that is *supposed* to be challenging for the title. All in all, it has been a really embarrasing start for Letson Town, and all their talk about revenge for last season's loss of the title seems to be all talk and absolutely no action.

Instead, the race for the top could end up not being a race. It could end up being a one-team show, with Loconstead United floating to victory. Other teams have something to say about that though. Blashpool City currently sit on 2nd, only 4 points behind Loconstead. They certainly showed their potential to be a challenger last season, finishing in 3rd place and only 2 points behind first and second place; a notable 5 points above South Saints in 4th place. Only Blashpool and Loconstead have not lost a game so far this season after 10 matches. If they continue this, they will be able to apply some serious pressure to Loconstead United and possibly challenge for the title. They certainly have it in them. As does Carredington - performing above expectations, and South Saints who seem to be where they always are.

Mid-Table results are also showing an interesting story. Old Sarum are currently sitting in 5th place, up from their 9th place finish last season. This may change as they face some of the other teams; generally the half way point is a better time to tell how well a team could do this season, but it is looking promising for them. This league is also holding some potential to their rivals. New Sarum sit 2 points behind Old Sarum in 6th place. This is an interesting rivalry to watch across this season; it could get bloody.

Poor Letson (come on don't tell me you're actually feeling sorry for them) are stuck in 8th. They always seem to do *really* well, or *really* poor. This seems like, at this stage, that it could be one of their really poor seasons, but I'm sure they're not quite ready to give up yet, despite the fact some of the results have actually been quite embarrasing. We could end up with a result not dissimilar to that in season 2 though, where Letson finished in 7th immediately after winning the league the season before. The only thing is they didn't win the league last season.

The rest of the table isn't actually *that* surprising, albeit there being a few discrepancies here and there. Birdingstone United is a little lower than expected, but not by that much.

Dovertown appear to be asserting their position in this league; they seem determined to stay up. They're currently sitting in 14th, on 10 points. They have only won 1 game, and their defence does seem to be causing them problems, but if they can keep it up and possibly improve their defence they they are in with a decent shot at staying up to see The Flame League into a second season. The same can be said for Rhayader as well, who are 2 positions below Dovertown. They, however, have won 2 games. Their problem, as brought up before, is their offence. They have had a strong defensive performance so far, conceding only 12 goals - the same as Loconstead United who are currently leading the table, but they have only scored 5 goals - to have any real chance this season of staying up they are going to have to improve their offensive strategy and get some more balls into the opponent's net.

At this stage, the relegation battle is looking tasty. There are a large number of teams that are definitely not free from the relegation battle trap, but at the moment the teams that appear in trouble of a scrap are probably from Llandudno Local down - LL of course where they always seem to be in 15th place. Merseyshore Forest and Ketley appear to be in real trouble, and while it is too early to say, it definitely looks like they are the most likely contenders for relegation. After 10 games, Merseyshore Forest sits in 19th place on only 2 points - 4 points behind Swanmouth City in 18th, and Newton Castle in 17th. They have only scored 2 goals across 10 games - an average of 0.2 goals a game - and have conceded 16. Ketley on the other hand are in an even more dire situation. They sit on 1 point, having drawn only 1 game and lost 9 games. They have only scored 3 goals - better than Forest - but they have conceded 21 goals; that's 1 goal scored for every 7 goals conceded. That is definitely a warning that they are up for relegation.

So far, this season doesn't look like it will live up to the dramatics of last season, but there is certainly some interesting rivalrys and results across the board.

Honestly, these results come as a surprise. At the half way point in the league, the picture the standings paint is very different to the picture painted after 10 matches. They say every match counts in football, and I think the drastic change in standings we can see in here is testament to that.

And at this stage, I have to admit that saying the title battle could be a one-team show, and that Letson Town were already out of the title race, was really premature and TOTALLY WRONG. I mean, what just happened to Loconstead United? They were comfortably leading the table after 10 matches, 4 points in the lead having won all their games - 30 points of 10 matches. However, over the past 8 matches they have only managed 13 points; a change in fortune for sure. They haven't yet lost their lead, but they are now tied for the top spot with South Saints, beating them on goal differential, and only 6 points ahead of Letson Town who have had a strong resurgence to reach 4th in the league again.

Loconstead United were doing great up until Match Day 13. They had won all 12 of their matches, on 36 point. 6 points clear of Blashpool City, who were in 4th. They were coasting at the top of the league, and it looked like they were going to dominate it all the way to the end. There was even talk of Loconstead United possibly being the first team to ever finish the league without having lost a game.

Then their 13th match came. And they lost. To Letson Town. And their confidence tumbled. In 6 matches, they have only managed 7 points. That's 1 victory, 1 loss, and 4 draws. That is a remarkable transformation of performance. It's almost as if Letson Town beating Loconstead United enabled them to comeback, and severely damaged the confidence of Loconstead's players. The title race just got a whole lot more interesting. And South Saints is yet another dynamic in that title race. Once again the best defensive team in the league currently. And they sit level with Loconstead, having won more games than them overall. This is looking juicy.

There have been changes in the story elsewhere as well. While Old Sarum and New Sarum are going for consistency, Llandudno Local have had a remarkable surge into the top 10 of the league. Instead of 15 and a potential relegation fighter, they now sit in 9th on 25 points. Admittedly, they aren't close to 8th - 7 points behind in fact - but they are showing that they are not relegation fodder. They are now 12 points above the relegation zone, and should be able to keep distance enough from it.

There has been little change in the relegation zone itself. Swanmouth City sit just inside it on 13 points, while Merseyshore Forest and Ketley are very uncomfortably still deep in the relegation zone. I expect those 2 teams will be relegated, and there will be a battle for the third relegation place.

Little change at the top of the league up to this point. Well, there is some change but most of it is miniscule. There has been ups and downs for both Loconstead United and Letson Town, but for most of the past 10 matches there has been a gap of roughly 4-6 points between the two of them. Loconstead United currently hold an 8 point lead against Letson Town, something which will assure them they they are more likely to beat Letson Town than the reverse. However, Letson Town did hold a comfortable lead over Loconstead United towards the end of last season, but Loconstead were able to come from behind, finishing it off in the final match by defeating Letson Town to draw level and take the league win down to goal differential.

There are a few teams to watch though in regards to the title race, and the race for The Globe Cup. South Saints, who are currently sandwiched between Loconstead United and Letson Town in second place, sit only 3 points behind Loconstead United. While they may not have quite as good an offence as the other teams in the top positions in the league, it has been their defence that has kept them up there with the possibility of challenging for the title. On match day 20, they even briefly took the lead in the table off Loconstead United, so they are certainly an ever-looming threat in this exciting title race.

Carredington and Blashpool City are another 2 teams to watch, especially in regards to the race for The Globe Cup places. Carredington sits in 4th - a Globe Cup place, while Blashpool City sits in 5th, a non-Globe Cup place. They've both had similar performances this season, with similar stats. Blashpool is only 1 point behind Carredington, and the battle between them could be exciting. They are also a threat to Letson Town. After 10 matches, we were saying Letson were out of the title race. After 18 matches, we said they were very much back in. Now, they are both in the title race (only just), but are also at threat of being kicked out of UICA competitions this season altogether, which would be a very disappointing result for the team.

The team I think we should most watch is Birdingstone United though. They have been slowly creeping up the standings, getting closer and closer to threatening the top 4, and now they are in a position where they can really challenge for a Globe Cup position. After 10 matches, they were in 9th place. After 19 matches (the half-way point), they were in 7th place - 5 points behind The Globe Cup places. Now they are in 6th place, only 2 points behind The Globe Cup positions. They have slowly been building momentum, and I think they pose a real threat.

Llandudno Local are still in the top 10 of the league. They have managed to maintain their position surprisingly, and they could end up with what I think would be their best finish in The Flame League ever (needs checking). They sit on 43 points, well clear of the relegation zone which I said they were at threat of being involved with after 10 matches. However, after those 10 matches they seem to have upped their game, and while they aren't definitely safe yet, they might as well be.

Meanwhile, the relegation zone is as it has been for most of the duration of the season. Dovertown are now much closer to relegation - 1 point above the relegation zone - but the actual relegation zone hasn't changed. Swanmouth City are in 18th, 1 point behind safety. Merseyshore Forest are on 13 points, 7 points behind safety and Ketley are on 12 points in last place. Those 2 are pretty much set for relegation, but if Swanmouth City can still definitely do something about and relegate Dovertown instead.
