AN ANWELLIAN RIVAL IS AFOOT
The staff of the Futurnian Association can still recall the day they met with the Communion's gung-ho crew. Unlike most diplomatic missions, the people who came from "l'étoile democrate" were very much outspoken and hyperactive. They went on about how successful their democratical system was and how the nation had enjoyed so much success that they only saw fit to join the Association to impress and enlighten their neighbours about the proper path to riches. It wasn't long until the Hinodejin mission explained the circumstances of the Association and how they were not to behave out of tone. Not too long later, they were made aware of Anwellia's presence in the Association and thus another rant followed.

It turns out that Anwellia and la Communion went to blows in the past with the former emerging on top but the war also assisted in the takedown of the former monarchs of the incoming region. Their thanks? Loads of insults. La Communion was here to show how better they were compared to everyone... especially the Anwellians.

FOOTBALL AT THE DEMOCRATIC STAR
La Communion's top association football competition started seventy years ago under the name of Ligue Metropolitaine, featuring make-shift teams before involvement from noted magnate Amédée de Foix and his L'Alouette Foot spurned the sport into something more organized.

Commune football would also be known for its domination stints when teams would string a series of title wins before someone else took hold and did the same. It could be said that the first team who did so would be a team known as Les Nordistes, a touring club from the Communian dominions that were yet to be promoted into state-ship. This club showed up in 1923 with their rivals from the south and promptly blew things out of the water before both teams were purchased and amalgamated into L'Alouette Foot by Mr. de Foix.
The self-made magnate himself was a native of the dominions and felt that pushing the club forward would be a sensible business. L'Alouette Foot would later go briefly under the name of Le Dinamo de Sainte-Marie after a merger with fellow top-tier side Commercial de Lathine before assuming their current form as Loyal Sainte-Marie following the absorption of another capital club in Moulin Téchie.

The truly most successful club in the nation is Saint-Matthieu Foot. Founded by men from the Banc de la Commune, the club assumed its current name following plans to serve as an organic powerhouse, focusing on scouting and raising players into stardom. Albeit under a slump in the past couple of years, Saint-Matthieu Foot remains a fifteen-time champions side that remains a fixture in the top tier if only by a slight margin.

Many other noteworthy clubs come to mind. One could start with Revanchistes d'AMC Foot, another club hailing from the earliest days of the league and its makeshift nature, the team was based out of the red light district of the capital, a debauchery-filled borough under the rule of one Madame Anne Marie Charles. Charles, a divisive figure in the history of the Commune was known for profiteering from prostitution rings in her section of the city and while having a motherly reputation to the people who worked under her, also hid a dark side that would later see her dead at the age of 52. Her death saw the local team collapse from lack of funds until locals who revolted over her death re-established the club under its current name.

On the other side of the fence, one could speak of Le Gendarmerie Foot. Since 1958, the league has featured teams backed by the nation's military branches - the Army has Guerriers de l'Armée, the Air Force has Cercle Aéronautique and the Navy has its Club Naval - but a police team has been an infamous question inside Commune football circles. Originally, the Gendarmes debuted in the league with their Gendarmerie Sociel Club, an institution that exists to this very day for social causes and charity but at the time happened to have a decently organized club. Come 1924, the death of Mme. Charles was linked with a match-fixing ring inside the ranks of GSC, covered under questionable claims of "satanism" by the local gendarmerie chapter. Members would re-establish themselves after the Sociel Club kicked them out under the name of Union SC but they would later leave the league in 1934 citing financial woes when in truth they rejected participating in the league against fully black club Étoile Noire. In 59, an unrelated club backed by the national police would re-appear under scrutiny but has since surprisingly refrained from any shenanigans.

There are clubs of less questionable morals, of course. Inaugural members Lycée Anne-Victoire XI were never much to write about until folding as the league moved towards professionalism and let their entry be used by alumni of the school who have since reformed the team as SCAV Young Boys. There's also one-hit wonders of sorts Nidia Hyperia, a team from Hyperiaville that debuted in 1932, won its first three championships and then proceeded to drop into the background. Merchantile side Étoile d'Orient Wallois claimed two titles in its history but remained for long as a very respectable club with backing from some of the richest men in the nation. Coastal side Providence Foot is revered for its football academy which helped the club who's never had quite the finances to reach nine top-tier titles in its history.

Currently, amidst the flux of clubs, two teams have been showing much capability towards dominating the national scene although their domination isn't quite as solid as one would expect. Hailing from lands that were once the dominions of La Commune, the clubs of CF Saint-Sebastian and FC Outre-mer Mannehatte have often been referred to as a sort of homage to the two touring sides from the dominions as the two clubs have won six of the past ten titles of the league and have yet to show any major signs of dropping off.

But that's the thing, the other four were won by a surprising Loyal Sainte-Marie... and new champions in Sauveur Foot and Schoonenborch VV. Commune football has a lot of lore and can be very exciting though maybe a bit scary to see from outside.

TIMELINE OF EVENTS

THE FIRST MEETINGS
On the back of an impressive showing by the Rogues internationally and a relaxed domestic season without much fanfare, the professional clubs of Scaramangia gather to discuss forming a main professional league akin to the regular tournaments abroad. Names are spitballed and terms are considered though the clubs disagree regarding terms such as financial status and attendance criteria. Amateur club The Rogues are naturally invited to participate. However, they refrain from commenting on any matters besides money, noting that they would not be able to participate if such a circumstance comes to play. Talks remain amicable at the end of the day and they decide to move forward with a planned main tier with twenty clubs while other interested parties would be arranged accordingly in a second tier.

The outcome of the reunion ends up leaked by the nation's main journal - the Golden Gunner - and it quickly becomes the talk of the country. Media pundits ponder on who would make the list of inaugural clubs, celebrities weigh in and even some districts and small towns advertise the idea of starting clubs to play against the country's very elite of the sport. At last...

(1 week later...)
A MATTER OF NATIONAL ORDER
The country's main family, holder of the nation's government chose to refer to the public via their Ministry of Sport to essentially give it a thumbs up. In their words, "the idea of a singular, regular top tournament in the nation should benefit the sport and the populace thus making it very reasonable for the state to back it up" before announcing plans to broadcast it under the nation's public channel for means of approachability. Some of the clubs involved in the talks denote that they're interested but would still be keen on exploring the commercial potential of the league.

More talking ensures but the government remains steadfast on a public plan that would see the clubs earn a "reasonable fee" in the form of a small percentage of the nation's cultural budget. Needless to say, the clubs don't make it known publically but everyone knows well that they didn't like it in the slightest though went along with it because they know better than to test the Scaramanga clan's goodwill. This, however, does end up serving as a way for the Rogues to be willing to participate as they appreciate the concept of a league that would be open for everyone to enjoy without a paywall.

PEOPLE'S CLUB NOT INVITED IS "TRAGEDY", SAYS IZOLDA GRIER DE MANN
Through their own paper, "The People's Rose", noted syndicalist leader Izolda Grier de Mann seemed to take a break from her efforts towards her more fervent matters of proper representation for the working class in the higher echelons of the government in a more palpable manner than the appointment of a singular minister (of Labour, obviously) that leftist stalwart party Le Groupe Rouge has been essentially trusted to pick to protest the lack of proletariat representation in the denial of the People's Club as a justifiable member of the top tier.

Formed under the curfew of Grier de Mann's United Revolutionary Party as a way to provide entertainment for the local youths of the more impoverished province of Kielsmouth, the club was denied under the very belief that they would be very likely trounced as is though the more realistic justification would be that the team had yet to play at a professional capacity and that the country was at most trying to avoid more circumstances like it. Izolda took it very poorly and made it public that this yet-to-be-fully accepted council of clubs was very much working to benefit the elites and denounced the Rogues for betraying their more leftist leanings by accepting participation in the tournament. She would finish the statement by pointing out that the People's Club would not be put down for as long as the workers breathed, the will was there.

CAPITAL CITY'S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP GOES ON HIATUS AS LAST THREE CLUBS GO PRO
To what some called a sign of the times, Capital City's illustrious Capital Championship declared to be going on a hiatus due to a lack of reasonable entries after three of its remaining teams chose to move into professional football. Unsurprisingly for the size of the nation's capital, an urban sprawl that can rival some of the country's more rural provinces, its local football association had already been facing a challenge once a portion of its teams took part in the inaugural "Quest for the Golden Apple" and never looked back home.

Drawn by the allure of the financial boom that clubs like the Kitsune of Sunrise Heights, College Station Dropouts and Pier District Resolutes - who themselves already had a following but managed to somehow explode in popularity following the season - the trio of Alan Bic Foot, Yacht Club of Scaramangia and Avalan Villa Shredders' Club chose to renounce their registration with the local association and instead joined the council of professional clubs though aware of their status as likely second or third tier sides. The decision came as a bit of a shock as two of the three teams weren't much to write home about, to begin with: Alan Bic (nicknamed the Winemakers) hails from the commercial district and has a connection with the city's burgeoning wine-selling industry but have yet to show anything in the pitch besides some uninspired participations in the municipal league's top tier while Avalan Villa has the distinction of being a former farm team for the Dropouts before moving into the Olympic-designed national skate park of Avalan Villa and falling neatly into the borough's skate culture though football remains a bit of a foreign concept for them.

The exception of the trio, the Yacht Club of Scaramangia is obviously related to the very elitist group of the same name who originally started playing the sport in small amateur circuits against similarly bourgeoise-backed clubs before promptly dominating them with the use of what some detractors call "ringers", people paid for to participate with them without the otherwise obligatory requirement of YC membership. The club would hit a wall in the main municipal circuit but some wonder if the move to professionalism might be just what the ambitious beach-side club wanted to be taken seriously.
"CAT CAPITAL OF THE MULTIVERSE" SAINT KATHERINE ANNOUNCES PROFESSIONAL CLUB
In the first case of a club built from the ground up with the specific intent of participating in professional play, tourist trap and "Cat Capital of the Multiverse" Saint Katherine in the province of Redwood would see local government-backed club The Pests of St. Katherine debut this upcoming season. Named after a local legend simply known as "the Pest" (though some also know it by the name of "la Creatura"), this new club would play in city colours of red and purple while featuring a curious representation of their local legend and the city's Saint Katherine's Church of the Loved on their crest.

Although an ambitious project, the club's leadership noted that they wished to start things bit by bit, aiming for local players before ever really contemplating something "so unique" as players from other provinces if not flat-out other countries. In spite of this, the team expects to be a major hit for the community's tourism sector in ways that simply being the "cat capital" wouldn't do though whether that's an accurate prediction or not remains to be seen.

(2 days later...)
CLUBS OFFICIALIZE UNION OF PROFESSIONAL CLUBS
That night, a major announcement is broadcasted nationally with representatives of each of the forty-eight teams that participated in the Golden Apple tournament the previous season declaring that the birth of the Union of Professional Clubs, a limited liability company whose job would be to both run a proper football league and its soon-to-be lower leagues while also managing its licensing and broadcasting rights abroad. The latter seemed to still be a point of contention to an extent from the Rogues who decried the likelihood of having to structure themselves accordingly but a lack of info about it suggests it to be questionable as a fact

The UPC would additionally feature a group of appointees from the government to serve as the league's arbitration in order to guarantee fairness on league-related trials and a firm to manage its international interests, citing plans to deal with the league's broadcasting rights to their more natural allies in the Futurnian lands and the Hinodejin Empire. Future plans included the establishment of a junior league that has yet to be elaborated and a friendly international tournament with Hinodejin colony Kanran-riku's burgeoning local league.

(2 days later...)
SCARAMANGIA SUPERLEAGUE ANNOUNCED, EXPECTED TO FEATURE SIXTEEN TEAMS
Image

Although still in its early days as an idea, the UPC chose to officialize the league's name and logo as the Scaramangia SuperLeague. Pundits displayed surprise at the decision of abandoning the Golden Apple concept but welcomed the name and its simple but effective logo as a sign that the concept could be very much feasible in its job of presenting top Scaramangian football. Alas, the announcement would meet a surprising amount of criticism due to the lack of anything more notable besides an image and a name. What this did do was present people the opportunity to dream about what else the UPC would cook and how the league would take shape.

The favourite theory by the populace was that the competition would likely feature the top sixteen clubs from the Golden Apple (the College Station Drama, the Rogues, the Chapuisat House Robins, the Armadura de las Cruces, the Alikhaville Cossacks, the Aurora Island System Shockers, the Camp Boote Cadets, the Eden Garden Loyals, the Cape Julietta Roses, the Pier District Resolutes, the Belleville-Nord Tigres, the Orion Restorationnaires, the Overpass' Rebellious Manix, the Central Rockmore Worldwide Players, the Kitsune of Sunrise Heights and the Malandros de Santa Graça) as its inaugural members and have it be a round-robin system with or without playoffs. This proved to be questionable to some, as the format lacked certain clubs of a big reputation such as the Dropouts (Drama's fierce rivals), the Roverettes, the other two clubs out of the Rockmore metropolis (Smart Cats and Groove) and the Adventuriers out of Plage Rouge. In the eyes of the media, not having those teams would be a costly mistake for the otherwise promising league.

(1 day later...)
POLEMIC LIETNAN MEDIA GROUP DECLARES OWNERSHIP OF SSL, DEBUNKED TEN HOURS LATER
Based out of Lietna in the Emirates of Futurnia, media group Infomedia's last footballing efforts were when their club in Mosėdis served as an inaugural member of the professional league of Lietna known as Premier Lyga. Said club would then be owned by a casino magnet and finally sold to a local government where they would since be playing in the third tier under the name of Valstiečiai FK Sostinė. The Infomedia club was well-known inside their own country for its efficiency as an amateur team of mostly media industry staff, from the camera crew to the eventual in-house scriptwriter. Alas, the need to sell the team once it went professional was merely a consequence of a failing company as a failure to get with the times and a heavy dose of "creative accounting" led the studios to find themselves deep in the red.

Such a situation led to desperate measures of all sorts, from debuting an incredibly sensationalistic journal that would be cancelled in three weeks after running afoul of governmental guidelines for its time slot to shuffling one of its media stations into a pay-per-view porn channel, Infomedia found itself in dire need of a clean, safe product that would interest the locals and they believed to have found it in the still conceptual Scaramangian SuperLeague but instead of actively meeting with the league and its economical side represented by a hired firm, the company forged papers to declare themselves as full owners of the tournament and party designated to receive all royalties. In spite of its obviousness, it still took local Lietnan authorities ten hours to act on the situation and avoid a diplomatic incident, guaranteeing that the media group did not, in fact, own the league, the clubs or any sort of royalty.

The apparent culprit of the whole ordeal, an unnamed son of Infomedia's CEO was reported to be going "a whole month without allowance" according to his father.

OFF-SEASON NEWS
After a year of surviving the odd player signing here and there, the Liga Brega found itself in relative danger from the Primeira Liga and its efforts to increase its numbers. Head of the burgeoning semi-pro league, DJ Nelsim took to the courts again as he presented the soon-to-start efforts as an attempt to undermine his league's status and standing. Funnily enough, both sides ended with egg on their face after the jury: DJ Nelsim's litigation wasn't deemed acceptable while the Primeira Liga's defence that the IFCF would come to deliver punishment if matters stayed in normal court was promptly laughed out of the room as the nation has never operated under their rules to begin with.

Judicial matters out of the way, the Primeira Liga resumed its operations by poaching five teams out of the Liga Brega's ranks. Joined by newly formed Santa Joana, the saint trio of São Judas Tadeu, São Lucas and São Mateus plus classic middling side Recreativo de Ramos and former Liga Brega hardliners Riacho do Jacaré would join a larger-than-usual Segunda Liga.

LIGA BREGA
The poaching turned out not to be as severe as it sounded on paper though obviously, the new money meant the league would have to endure another round of talent poaching, although there were fewer names to even grab to begin with the few strong teams that the league still had having been able to comfortably keep a hold of their precious talent.

Not to say DJ Nelsim was too happy with it, Riacho do Jacaré had been one of the teams that would consistently back his decisions and efforts on behalf of the league and their fervorous support would be missed. Like it or not, the league had founded itself on a system that required constant debate between all of the clubs involved and by that point, there were at least two blocs that counted amongst themselves almost all of the (by now) one hundred teams which would usually be the main colliding forces whenever an argument popped up - the classic bloc (home of the more sensible decisions like semi-professionalization), which was usually led by league powerhouse Dion Villa, older clubs like Apolo, Amanhecer and Sidney Magal plus a reasonable slice of newer teams of which one could include the very noteworthy Juventude Meceneira and the moderate bloc, composed almost exclusively by newer clubs with leadership more-or-less handed to Tupy after previous leaders Porto Velho crossed the line, which would usually focus on fighting any attempts to actively litigate the Primeira Liga. And then, composed of around six or seven teams, the hardline bloc.

It used to be eight and that was a pain DJ Nelsim would repeatedly bring up to his secretary. Riacho do Jacaré wasn't a particularly booming town but an excellent banana harvest cycle and some wise investments made the town expand quickly. Local businesses were very keen on having a professional team to crown this new page and, at the end of the day, money talks. He still had the allegiances of Açaí Esporte, Engenheiros de Guam, Jambalaya Clube, Joselitópolis, União Aquidaban and one-time national champion (and mostly irrelevant otherwise) Virilhada Clube with Sport Canabrava serving as a partial member, their opinions usually hanging with Nelsim but at times flipping to the classic bloc. Losing teams in the other blocs wasn't an issue, but the hardliners were few in numbers and this just made things more complex.

One also has to remember that Nelsim still ran a football club, although the man himself didn't seem to remember it more often than not. DJNP, an acronym for DJ Nelsim Produções, had been performing competently after semi-professionalism and was often used for advertising the man's products but football had simply not been their main effort for the past couple of years and the machinations of their leader meant that the club would often only be remembered when it came to funds... explicitly the requesting of said funds, which were usually obtained with increasing difficulty from their owning company's financial wing. Rebellion brewed inside the club with their owner none the wiser until the season started.

The funny thing was that DJNP turned out to have a pretty good run for a change, leading the league's Capital Section (a result of having such a bloated league was that they were divided into sections and DJNP found itself playing clubs from the metropolitan area) until one month where the checks bounced. Turns out there was a financial snafu with a national holiday and DJ Nelsim was sensible enough to admit that the issue was in his side of the deal and he would promptly pay them two days later as the funds were remade available. That would've been it, if not for one recruit mentioning something about a "new project" during the interviews that followed the lack of payment.

A year that could've ended with a mythical championship, which still counted as a national championship in the eyes of the authorities after all, was thus killed on the spot as Nelsim's neurotic behaviour came back with a vengeance: the recruit, seventeen-year-old winger Chico Science out of the Manguezal district got the boot even with his very respectable numbers along with three friends (Zumbi, Canequinha and Théo Pitton) for being "seeds of evil" in his "piece of heaven" which the media promptly ate up for the hotness of it all. On its trail, followed the "Week of Trust", where players were constantly put through investigations and hearings, enough that the police almost got involved.

An exhausted DJNP proceeded to then lose in the first round of the playoffs to eventual surprise champions Tupy, a team that had evolved from their hardline days after a failed merger with Maranguatú into their current moderate stance. DJ Nelsim would take a leave of absence as a result, choosing to reassess the circumstances he was in. The funny thing is that none of the pruned players were even leading this "new project" conspiracy but they would all join the actual new project when the team's current manager, Diego Prieto, announced that he would be spearheading a new professional team aiming to participate in the Primeira Liga umbrella.

DJ Nelsim did not oppose the move but that meant he lost an entire team, his squad was now a bunch of youth team players... and the birth of a key, heavy question: Is he still the right man to lead the Liga Brega as president?

PRIMEIRA LIGA and SEGUNDA LIGA
The Primeira Liga too found itself starting with debates, though things were far more peaceful: the expanded second tier was there to expand the top tier down the line but they decided to simply accelerate the process. Thus the debate was simple: whether to have more teams from the Segunda Liga promoted to replace the relegated clubs from the Primeira Liga or to simply not have relegation and let everyone use the year to at least practice their operations. Naturally, in a system with a bit of franchise football to itself, they chose the latter.

Normally, that would've meant a less interesting season with teams having less to play for. It turned out not to be the case, however, as the league found itself with a massive title fight between at least ten clubs, with six of them still in the running for the title by the final matchday. Afro-Futurniano, then leaders proceeded to tie with Pinheiros, which meant they could only watch as Ilhense, São Bento and Nacional won their games. Três Corações almost joined them but a last-minute goal from a Cidade Ferroviária forward literally cost them the title then and there.

The battle to go up was only really exciting when it came to determining who was the last team to qualify. Comendador Vargas ran with the Segunda Liga title, Izabel was quick to claim the second spot and Maranguatú wasn't too far off. Atlético Murrayense ended up being the final team to go up after edging out surprising efforts from Sardinha and newcomer Riacho do Jacaré.
