Welcome to Mattijana!

Mattijana is a huge safe nation with a significant, but proportionate population. It spans a fairly large range of climates with the far north a colder area, the central region temperate, the south Mediteranean and the South-East semi-desert. Petrovijanka, the capital city, is located almost exactly in the centre of the country at 214-232 metres above sea level. It has summer highs of around 28°C and lows of -5°C in the winter. There is a high level of sunshine for most of the year with precipitation mostly snowfall in the winter months.

Culturally, Mattijana can also be divided into six regions. The West of the country is largely Germanic whilst the centre North is a mix of Slavic and Germanic cultures, centred around Mattijana's second city, Burges. The North and East are mainly Eastern European (closest to Polish irl) whilst the Centre (where Petrovijanka is situated) and the South are Slavic (similar to the Slovenian and Croatian cultures). There is an Arabic community in the South-East.
All Mattijanans speak the official language, Mattijanan. However, due to this not being spoken anywhere else in the World, English and German are well-spoken throughout the country whilst Arabic is taken on by the most intelligent students (in addition to English and German) as well as by those in the South-East.
There is no official religion in Mattijana due to this mix of cultures. Islam is popular in the South-East and parts of the South whilst some in the East follow the Mattijanan Orthodox church. Most people hold no religious belief, but believe in the universal philosophy of being kind, welcoming and helpful to others. Even in religious communities, it is these principals that are most talked of with religious figures used to preach them.
Due to the mix/match nature of Mattijanan cultures, religions are also a little mixed up. This is the reason that most muslim women do not wear headscarves.

Attitudes to drink and sex are fairly liberal whilst there is good gender, sexual and racial equality. Social mobility is also good and the rich earn only twice as much as the poorest.

The government follows mildly socialist policies meaning the tax rate is fairly high, but schools, hospitals and other public services are all well-funded and reasonably-priced. Taxes on large businesses are higher than on small ones. The government building is the MattiStaja, which is situated on Staja square in the centre of Petrovijanka. All six regions have their own smaller congresses however. Politicians are generally appreciated and although public decisions are limited to elections and important political decisions where the main population is the most affected, most citizens feel well represented due to the numerous meeting and discussion opportunities with their local politician.
All parties follow a similar philosophy, but mainly disagree on where to fund the most. The MattijanaLeušaBuro is the current elected party, but other popular parties are the ViroBuro (who generally promote the needs of the environment) and the NašinalBuro (who promote funding for employment opportunities). Despite this attitude, unemployment benefits are actually quite low in order to encourage people to be hard-working.

Currency and Shopping
Mattijana has recently switched its currency to the Espo, the regional currency of Esportiva, which is worth around 10 NS$. The country has suffered some economic instability since, meaning everyday products may appear expensive. However, public services remain well funded, so public transport and any healthcare, should it be required, are likely to be cheaper than at home for visitors. Due to the decreasing exchange rate, industries dealing with international customers, such as hotels and travel companies, will have very reasonable prices.

Football In Mattijana:

Football, locally known as Fussja, generally plays second-fiddle to Field Hockey in almost all parts of Mattijana, but is popular over the entire country, one of the only sports where that is the case. As a result, grass roots football is found throughout cities and rural areas, and is enjoyed by all.

Despite this, the Mattijanan premier league, where all members of the national team play, is entirely city-based, with two major sides in the capital Petrovijanka, one in Burges and others in the cities of Revinka, Puljanka and Snezn.

Teams inevitably vary in style, but most Mattijanan fans believe the best way to play football is to play passes along the ground, often out from the back, with fast and skilful wingers taking on defenders one-on-one. The counter attack should be used at pace, with longer passes used to stretch defences. The opposites to that, keeping possession with short passes or aerially kicking the ball upfield are frowned upon.

Mattijana has a Football association, the MattijanaFussBand, that operates as part of the Mattijanan department of sport. They run the national team and the administration of the Mattijanan leagues, as well as co-ordinating grass roots football for all.

Venues:

Stadijo Dinamov:

City: Petrovijanka
Capacity: 60,000
Club residents: Dinamo Petrovi
Location: Northern Petrovijanka, just outside the old town.
Transport: NordesRute tram service from central Petrovijanka. B6/8 Bus links.
Matches: MD1: 14:00 Ethane vs Copper Cuprum, 19:30 Mattijana vs Dandillis.
MD2: 2nd Brazilian Paradise vs Cheetahs and Reptiles Coalision, Brenecia vs Boring Paradise
MD3: Ethane vs Dandillis, Mattijana vs Copper Cuprum

The Stadijo Dinamov is widely regarded as the home of Mattijanan football and is one of the oldest football grounds in the country. The stadium itself has kept up to date over the years, but the style undoubtedly remains and the Dinamov is certainly up to the demands of international events.

Stadijo OstOtok:

City: Petrovijanka
Capacity: 40000
Club residents: FK Petrovijanka
Location: Garijo Ljubana, PetrovijankaOtok, central Petrovijanka
Transport: 5 minutes by foot from Staja Square, 3 by bike. OstesRute tram service or B12 Bus link.
Matches:
MD1: 14:00 Brenecia vs Cheetahs and Reptiles Coalision, 19:30 Boring Paradise vs 2nd Brazilian Empire
MD2: Copper Cuprum vs Dandillis, Mattijana vs Ethane
MD3: Boring Paradise vs Cheetahs and Reptiles Coalision, Brenecia vs 2nd Brazilian Empire

Petrovijanka's smaller, but more central venue is situated on the east side of a natural island in the middle of the Sava Petrovi river and is another wonderful venue. The stadium itself is largely decorated in traditional Mattijanan methods and is trickier to access by road, but is merely a few minutes journey from the centre of the old town.

Around Petrovijanka: As Mattijana's capital city, much of Petrovijanka is based around the Mattistaja (parliament building) in Staja square. The city follows a ringed system from there and is a nice walking environment with much of the beautiful old town pedestrianised and the PetroviOtok present just to the East of the main square. Many coffee shops, bars and casual restaurants can be found, with the best one or two streets back from the main square. Apart from the football, attractions are numerous.

Sadijo Nasinal:

City: Burges
Capacity: 90,000
Club residents: FK Burges
Location: Eastern Burges
Transport: NordesLinija Train route from Burges central station, S5 subway route.
Matches:
MD1 14:00 Red Blackiland vs Buyan, 19:30 Coldfield vs Optima Consortium
MD2: Racing vs Vangaziland, San Jose Guayabal vs Thalamascia
MD3: Coldfield vs Buyan, Red Blackiland vs Optima Consortium

The Stadijo Nasinal is Mattijana's biggest multi-purpose sports stadium and is regularly used for Hockey, football, rugby, cricket and athletics events. The ground is less pretty, but more functional and due to it's size, is probably the easiest to get tickets for. The ground is situated in a reasonably uneventful suburb of Eastern Burges.

Around Burges:
As Mattijana's second city, Burges is a bigger location based around the Sava Juliana river, in the centre north of the country. Like most Mattijanan cities, there is a stone-based old town, as well as numerous historical monuments.
Ballajas, bread rolls with a variety of savoury fillings are the national Mattijanan dish and are derived from the area around Burges, As a result, the best ones can be found in restaurants in Burges.

Stadijo Snezn:

City: Snezn
Capacity: 37,000
Club residents: FK Snezn
Location: Western Snezn, not far from the old town.
Transport: 10-15 minutes walk from central Snezn, 10 minutes cycle. S3 tram or B3 Bus routes.
Matches:
MD1: 14:00 San Jose Guayabal vs Vangaziland, 19:30 Thalamascia vs Racing
MD2: Optima Consortium vs Buyan, Red Blackiland vs Coldfield
MD3: Thalamascia vs Vangaziland, San Jose Guayabal vs Racing

The Stadijo Snezn is situated in Mattijana's most northernmost city and is a more modern ground, with a generic rectangular shape and fairly modest capacity. This feature however makes it very accessible and easy to use, so a match here should be a reasonably comfortable experience. The stadium was built around 15 years ago, by owners FK Snezn.

Around Snezn:
Due to it's position in the far north, Snezn is chilly, even in mid-summer. Highs typically peak at around 15 degrees C, so for those of you used to warmer climates, pack some coats and woolly hats, particularly as winds can also be cold and strong.
Despite a tougher climate, Snezn is a delightful small city with a beautiful old town and a rich history based around the city's status as an old trading post, shipping hub and now cultural centre for the northern lifestyle and cuisine, which is slightly more basic, but still very wholesome.

Stadijo Katarina Zafarova:

City: Revinka
Capacity: 40,000
Club residents: FK Revinka
Location: Coast, Eastern Revinka
Transport: S2 Tram route, 20 minute walk/10 minute cycle from city centre.
Matches:
MD1: 14:00 Tumbra vs Flindostan, 19:30 Islana Lunigo vs Natanians and Nosts
MD2: Ummat al-Haqiqa vs Bongo Johnson, Super Llamaland vs Apox
MD3: Islana Lunigo vs Flindostan, Tumbra vs Natanians and Nosts

Another modern multi-purpose stadium, Revinka's regular evening thunderstorms mean that a roof has recently been added to the stadium to make for all-weather events. The stadium is already used for Hockey, rugby, football and handball and is named after Revinka and Mattijanan national Hockey captain Katarina Zafarova.

Around Revinka:
Revinka is Mattijana's party city, boasting the best weather and some of the best beaches in the country along with a multitude of beachside bars, cafes and restaurants. In addition, the old town, placed behind the old port and now marina is as stunning as any around the nation, with the town wall largely preserved.
Revinka is also the place to go for fish and seafood cuisine as well as being the home town of the RevinkaSaft beverage company that will this year be making an appearance at the AVBF festival in Neu Engollon. Wines and Liquors are the speciality, although non-alcoholic versions are also available.

Garijo Ales Struna:

City: Puljanka
Capacity: 30,000
Club residents: FK Puljanka
Location: Garijo Struna, north-west Puljanka
Transport: 10 minute walk/5 minute cycle from City centre. S11 Tram route.
Matches:
MD1: 14:00 Super Llamaland vs Bongo Johnson, 19:30 Apox vs Ummat al-Haqiqa
MD2: Natanians and Nosts vs Flindostan, Tumbra vs Islana Lunigo
MD3: Apox vs Bongo Johnson, Super Llamaland vs Ummat al-Haqiqa

An older, but very traditional stadium in a park just north-east of Puljanka's centre, the ground has progressed from humble beginnings as a playing field to one of the most recognisable stadiums in the country.
The ground has been upgraded in accordance with Mattijanan FA rules, but still retains much of its old history and is a beautiful place to watch a game.

If Revinka is the beach club of the south, Puljanka is its stately home. The small city, situated a little way inland from Revinka is more known for being the home of Mattijanan Cricket and is a little more modern than the likes of Petrovijanka and Revinka, with surviving architecture dating back only around 400 years. The city contains a lot of green space that is centred around the PulaGarijo, a beautiful urban garden that hugs the banks of the River Pul for most of the way through the city.
Despite Puljanka's more affluent past, recent history means that prices are much the same as in every other Mattijanan town and there are all manner of excellent and affordable restaurants dotted around the city. Cuisine is mixed, with some fish from the coast and the river Pul on the menu, as well as pork, beef and veal dishes with meats from the surrounding area.

WesterStadion:

City: WestStrand
Capacity: 45,000
Club Residents: Weststrand FK
Location: Northern Weststrand
Transport: 10 minutes on foot from Weststrand city centre and main train station. B1 bus route from city centre.
Matches:
MD1: 14:00 Gregoryisgodistan vs Goluta, 19:30 Rep. Kaboomlandia vs Fhulgamous Peninsula
MD2: Gregoryisgodistan vs Rep. Kaboomlandia, Fhulgamous Peninsula vs Goluta
MD3: Gregoryisgodistan vs Fhulgamous Peninsula, Rep. Kaboomlandia vs Goluta

One of the newest stadiums in Mattijana, the Westerstadion was built to reflect its resident's consolidation of a place in the Mattijanan premier league, which gave the club enough funds to move out of a small and battered old ground into a shining new 40,000 capacity creation on part of a former park in the north of Weststrand.
The ground is used almost exclusively for football, although there is talk of rugby also being allowed to take place at the ground. The stadium's modernity means it is very accessible and comfortable.

Around Weststrand:
The most Germanic of Mattijana's cities, Weststrand is situated on the west coast of the country and is part of a more ruggid section of coastline extending for hundreds of kilometres. As a result, the weather is generally windier than in most locations, with rain coming off the sea fairly regularly.
The town itself has a more colonial feel to it, with imposing buildings on the seafront giving way to narrow, but buzzing backstreets containing a number of quirky independent shops. Watersports are also popular in the area. Cuisine is largely seafood-based, with mussels a very popular choice in the region.

Long Distance Travel:

International airports are found in Burges, Revinka and Petrovijanka, with some Esportivan flights also heading to Snezn. Shuttle underground trains from airports to corresponding city centres will be subsidised for the duration of the tournament. High speed rail links extend between all cities and airports, making travel to Puljanka and Snezn also relatively painless. There are express services between Petrovijanka and Burges, Burges and Snezn, and Revinka and Puljanka.
Those from reasonably local countries looking to travel to Revinka or Snezn may wish to consider travel by sea. Both cities have good ferry ports and road and underground links to the city centres they serve.

-----------

Association Football/soccer is the nation's fastest growing sport in a distant third in popularity behind basketball and lacrosse. As such, the pro leagues don't pay enough to draw major athletes into the sport. This is starting to change because of a new group of investors and owners.

Several formerly dull franchises were up for sale. New owners brought new habits and aspirations. Some offered more money, which led to salary increases throughout the league. The government also began to fund an official national program of development, giving youth programs across the country a major boost. These would include academic programs.

It's no secret that some of Vangaziland's top soccer stars have never played professionally or internationally. Hectare Yulssen was the best soccer star in Vannish collegiate history. He would go on to play basketball, making multiple millions more than he would have playing football. He could have looked to play internationally, but like many others, he wanted to stay in Vangaziland.

At one time, Vangaziland had a team in the MPL. Many of those players had second jobs. That team's only link to international football, was Imari Lefisse, who would move to New Gazi on dual citizenship. Lefisse plays midfield for that nation's World Cup team and has helped grow the program.

Other players like winger Sven Laws and Ivory Tomatte worked, both being gym teachers. They were technically both coaches at rival schools, but did also run their school's athletics programs. Midfielder Vic Wethingson was a manager at a construction company, working a few years out of college.

The team's biggest star during Emeros FC's lone MPL appearance was Anthony Vonoss. He led the Vangazi into the round of 16 where they fell immediately. He led the Vangazi in scoring, but only pulled a contract in the Svennish Isles. The leagues there are seen as more of a "party scene" than any serious group of competition.

It caused his game to sharply decline. It was only 9 months ago that he got the call to start training hard for the national team.

"My career was over", Vonoss told an interviewer. "I was just going to pick up an easy two hundred thousand dollars and drink on the beach. It wouldn't have been so bad really", he said with a longing look in his eye.

"But when I got the call, I remembered why I played."

Vonoss was signed to one of the weaker, more desperate franchises in Vangaziland's top pro league. He lost his starting spot quickly and had to spend lots of time training on and off the pitch.

He missed out on his chance at the Olympiad. If he had been in his MPL form, he would have started and played through almost every match. Instead, he found himself at a workout facility with the U23 team, at the age of 25, and watching the Olympiad from a dorm room live stream. Vonoss would describe the event as "embarrassing".

"The truth was that I just wasn't ready for the Olympiad", he would say.

The Campionato Esportiva would bring a new head coach, Jaden Fils, who would bring a new strategy.

"I want the players who describe Vannish football, including the outliers", said Fils.

He chose Anthony Vonoss for the center forward position. Vonoss would get the chance to play on a Vannish team that was not projected for much success. Still, he'd get the chance to wear the flag and play under his nation's banner.

Fils would make a few other changes to what was essentially the Vannish men's Olympiad team. Most notably, he'd bring Teri Chambersen in, calling her the "better option at goal."

He also brought two freestylers into the fold. Oskvolde is one of the popular up and coming freestylers in Vangaziland. He's from a small Scandinavian community in the nation's western tundra. That hasn't stopped him from jumping into the Blue Coast scene, hanging out with musicians and BMX freestylers. Ivers Oskvolde officially changed his name to Oskvolde in November 2016. He called it a "lifestyle move", saying he saw it as a tradition he wanted to take literal.

He's a creative player with a quick first step and a good deal of agility. Oskvolde plays for the Blue Coast Futsal Club and will have to adapt to the 11 v. 11 game.

The Vangazi will look to scout their team against potential competitors as the mainland eyes a World Cup entry.

APOX CAMPIONATO ESPORTIVA XX SQUAD

Manager: Luxulya St. Cleer, Aged: 37
Assistant Manager: TBC
Style: -1

Spiel: So Gavin Hughes steps down as manager of Apox for the second time, leaving the door open for his long awaited successor, Luxulya St. Cleer, to step up and become the first woman to manage the national side. She hasn't made that many changes, bringing in some youth in Tregatta Spitfire, Ayrton Fox, Aspen Bridges and Miriam Oakstone-Sandoval to blood them in to gradually replace those older players in the side. However, they've all been around previous squads so in truth it is not that large a departure from previous form. This is a strong team, which should, hopefully, go far.

Brenecia are back in the ascendancy. Relatively. The days where a quick, surprisingly beautiful side played piercing attacking football are over. The Golden Generation is done. Today's Brenecia are dour, disciplined, hard-nosed and physical, a mix of the greying old guard and rough A-League diamonds. In a time of flux, Bardsley has opted to cast the net wide in search of the right stuff. Her second tenure has been marked by a distinct upturn in results, and a regional championship has given rise to a very unBrenecian optimism. An immediate return to the World Cup's second round was secured, and now defence of their title is the expectation.

First Team and Tactics
Image
Surprisingly to most, Bardsley's tactics are more defensive in her return to the national side - just like the Patriots were before the cultural revolution that Bardsley herself started, first with Kingsgrove and then with Brenecia themselves. The spine is extremely strong - Scrivener very solid but kind of slow, Szubanski making up for it with pace, both covered by world-class holding midfielder Gryphon and the box-to-box energy of Drover. Lovelock is chiefly the attacking fullback with Carrack more defensive, but they'll role-reverse occasionally for effect. Keohane is a creative, forward-thinking force on the left, Trevelyan a forceful charger down the right and Balliol will be given a lot of license to hang forward and make use of his ability to strike powerful long shots. Aelfwynn Bannion is something of a limited striker, but her strength and willingness to press from the front and fight for every ball is remarkable.

Image
When Brenecia leads in the closing stage - or even from the outset against a stronger side - they switch to become even more defensive, relying on a very conservative central midfield to shield the defence, locking the fullbacks into defensive roles and all-but isolating Lynch up front to drive forward with his height and pace.

Staff
Manager - Catherine Bardsley - Age 57
Asst. Manager - Colm Beckwith - Age 43

Catherine Bardsley revolutionised the A-League and then the Patriots with her template of attacking, pace-centric football, and now she's back. Admittedly a stint with Sameba's national team went horribly, horribly wrong - she was fired for poor performances and remained a political prisoner as hostilities ramped up between Sameba and Eura, culminating in war. She's back, now, and it feels good to see her back at the helm... but she's not quite the same, is she? Fiona Sylver has left to manage Rosbank Town in the A-League, and the highly-regarded Colm Beckwith has stepped up from the youth management ranks to take her place.

Goalkeepers
Core
1 - GK - Mathis Woodgate (Image Myrmidon) - Age 31 - 127 caps, 46 clean sheets
A world-class shot-stopper, reliable and solid. Has had something of a nomadic club career, playing in four nations, but his class has never been in doubt.

12 - GK - Rostyn Calhoun (Image Cenial United) - Age 24 - 7 caps, 5 clean sheets
Still young, still raw, and prone to the occasional howler. On the whole, though, he's a big, acrobatic lad and impressed during qualifying.

20 - GK - Rosalind Buchanan (Image Lunas FC) - Age 23 - 1 cap, 1 clean sheet
Kind of showed up out of nowhere, and considered obscure by Brenecian fans, but Buchanan's already a hardened goalkeeper. A reliable all-rounder.

Defenders
2 - RB - Czeslawa Szukala (Image Phalanx AF) - Age 28 - 89 caps, 2 goals
A nimble, quick-footed attacking fullback, who sometimes leaves herself open to moments of lax concentration. Has grown more cautious with time.

3 - LB - Ophelia Lovelock (Image Sabrefell Athletic) - Age 29 - 90 caps, 8 goals
Sharp and constantly running forward on the overlap, Lovelock is one of the game's premier attacking fullbacks. Lethal with a cross, and entirely two-footed.

5 - CB - Anaximander Scrivener (Image Brigham, vc) - Age 33 - 113 caps, 6 goals
A big, commanding presence, Scrivener is the lovechild between shouting and a brick wall. Indomitable in the air, and nigh-impossible to outmuscle.

6 - CB - Niko Szubanski (Image Rozelle) - Age 27 - 22 caps, 1 goal
Poor with the ball at his feet, Szubanski's main asset is his physicality. Not just tall and strong, but fast for a centre-half, with a penchant for sliding challenges.

18 - RB - Brun Carrack (Image Lotus Park) - Age 24 - 13 caps
Elegant and willowy, Carrack's a defender first and foremost. Good all around, but her anticipation usually puts her in the right place at the right time.

19 - LB - Gethin Quill (Image Revolutionaries) - Age 23 - 11 caps
Short and stocky, Quill's a quick, powerful runner and isn't afraid to show a little muscle defending his corner. A dirty street-fighter with the technique to back it.

22 - CB - Rostyn Bradden (Image Lajuno) - Age 32 - 87 caps, 6 goals
A big, slow, amiable sort. Rock-solid at the back, and while his lack of pace can leave him exposed, he more than gets the job done.

Midfielders
4 - HM - Catherine Gryphon (Image Starling, c) - Age 30 - 122 caps, 1 goal
A former BoldSport Galactico, Gryphon is Brenecia's one genuinely world-class player. A gifted intellect who dictates the tempo, just by doing the simple things right. A set piece specialist, on top of that.

7 - RAM - Squire Trevelyan (Image FC Jansberg) - Age 30 - 107 caps, 38 goals
A big, bruising winger, Trevelyan isn't a subtle player. He charges forward in diagonal lines, smashes through defences and scores or sets things up.

8 - CM - Aleksandra Skorupska (Image Trothwands Evolution) - Age 29 - 88 caps, 22 goals
A jack of all trades, most comfortable playing box-to-box. Has a knack for being in the right place at the right time, and her lungs seem limitless.

10 - LAM - Adelina Macbeth (Image Club Stein-Los) - Age 23 - 9 caps, 1 goal
Totally different to the woman she replaces, Macbeth is a very attack-minded, very physical and very direct winger, capable of crossing but just as happy running inside for the shot. Does need to sharpen her finishing. Daughter of Brenecia international James and resents the connection.

11 - AM - Sander Balliol (Image Tanrisal) - Age 28 - 59 caps, 18 goals
Full name: Alexsandr van Sorensen Balliol. He isn't, unsurprisingly, anywhere near as good, but he's thrived given space and trust as the side's playmaker. Boasts a fine shot, too.

13 - LAM - Keohane (Image Ramusok United) - Age 26 - 27 caps, 7 goals
Essentially a Sunrise Islander, Keohane is an improvisational street footballer. She's small and can drift out of games, but on her day she offers something unlike any of her countrymen. Subject to hostility after a failed panenka in the World Cup.

15 - RAM - Brae Crowther (Image Kingsgrove) - Age 21 - 6 caps, 1 goal
Crowther is lightning-quick and cocky to a fault, always trying to make the difference on her own, and needs to be knocked down a peg. Hopes are very high as she improves year by year.

16 - CM/AM - Elsie Drover (Image OAS Royal FC) - Age 27 - 68 caps, 15 goals
Drover has really come into her own over qualifying. Versatile and athletic, she always finds herself at the heart of things and always makes a difference.

21 - CM/CAM - Meghan Hartsdown (Image King's Park) - Age 23 - 10 caps, 2 goals
A tall, elegant playmaker-in-making, with a strong sense of team spirit and an optimistic nature lending itself to spraying Hollywood passes down the flanks.

23 - HM - Catsidhe Alweather (Image Marque) - Age 22 - 12 caps
Alweather is somewhat helter-skelter in style and is a very unclean tackler, and yet she's always there to make the tackle. Needs time to gain composure.

Forwards
9 - ST - Aelfwynn Bannion (Image North Hall) - Age 26 - 16 caps, 5 goals
Not a naturally gifted player by any means, Bannion is a big, combative striker who gets her elbows in peoples' faces and really scraps with defenders.

14 - ST - Fionn Lynch (Image SC Rinaldi) - Age 29 - 37 caps, 16 goals
Tall, lanky and vaguely graceless, Lynch is an erratic finisher with a poor first touch. And yet, he always seems to get himself on the end of chances, and sometimes even puts them away.

17 - ST - Griffin Riordan (Image Northern Stallions) - Age 22 - 2 caps, 1 goal
The raw, emerging talent in the ranks of Brenecia's forwards. Riordan is burning with ambition, loves scoring goals and doesn't care who she has to shove to the ground to get it in the net.

LLAMANEAN NATIONAL TEAM ROSTER - CE20
Manager - Curtis Steeling (ETN)

Goalkeepers

#01 - Lukas BERNHOLM - Kiiarana City (VIL) - 30
Not an acrobatic shot-stopper or particularly aggressive, but a solid keeper who rarely makes mistakes, is strong aerially (not just because of his imposing height), and is known for being a strong locker-room presence who leaves everything on the field. Strong with distribution and a consistently decent keeper, but overtaken by Sheffield’s play.

#13 - Markus SHEFFIELD - Chenoworth Harriers (NPH) - 29
Known for being able to stop a disproportionate amount of penalties, Sheffield is very athletic. Still extremely aggressive, but rounded out a bit in Chromatika over two seasons with Depri Sanar before being forced out of the nation. He’s landed on his feet, however, and in the Nepharim leagues, where he’s thrived, setting him up for a chance to regularly start for the Tigers.

#23 - Marcos SANTANA - Emerald City Harmony - 21
Possibly Super-Llamaland’s next starting keeper, Marcos Santana is an immense talent - well-known for his distribution, and an athletic (if raw) shot-stopper. Has already forced Erika Blanton out of the starting spot, and could start as soon as Sheffield is done.

Defenders

#02 - LB - Adrian LINDBERG - Real Azuris (COS) - 34 [C]
Captain. Leader. Champion’s Cup winner with Real Azuris. Adrian Lindberg has quickly become one of the best Llamaneans in the world. His athleticism is remarkable, he's high in stamina, and he has a natural gift for positioning. Not only that, but he’s also polished himself well, and rarely makes mistakes. Someone that was named the nation's best college player consecutive years and who has grown into his potential. They’ll miss him.

#03 - CB - Kurt REICHART - Francisca Orient (BRE) - 32
Orient may have gone down, but at least the six-four, physical center-back had a solid season. Even then, the former starter is clearly declining, and has already yielded to Wagner in the starting lineup.

#06 - CB - Emily YNOA - Brookport Otters (NPH) - 29
A quick, classy center-back who's willing to sacrifice her body to stop shots and make tackles. A smart player with strong positioning and a knack for anticipating passes. Also a strong man-marker, and overall a perfect fit for Explosive Football.

#14 - CB - Ephraim WAGNER - Emerald City Harmony - 32
An athletic defender who’s managed to take Kurt Reichart’s spot in the starting lineup. Smart, ambidextrous, and known for strong positioning. Had become a better playmaker as well in Los-Juantos before moving to two-time defending champions Harmony, where he’s only become more skilled.

#16 - RB - Francesca ABEL - Emerald City Harmony - 25
Came out of nowhere to become one of Harmony’s best players at right wingback. More conservative than Van Dijk, her competition for a starting spot, but an excellent defender whose passing makes her invaluable to Steeling’s Explosive Football.

#20 - L/RB - Kris STRAUSBERG - FC London (RKQ) - 32
An exceptionally unique player. For one thing, after a horrific bus crash suffered when he was sixteen, he no longer has a left arm. For another thing, he’s extremely fast, but tends to leverage this into making bold runs up either flank rather than actually keeping up with the opponent's’ attackers. Still, his strong on-ball play and passable marking make him a valuable asset.

#24 - L/CB - Emily GUSTAV - Emerald City Harmony - 24
A fairly polished young defender who’s managed to break into the first team of Harmony at a very young age. Capable of going forwards as well, although she can’t do much in the air. Expected to start as soon as Lindberg is ready to retire.

#27 - RB/CB - Jonathan VAN DIJK - FC Endeavor (APX) - 23
Van Dijk showed immense potential at the Di Bradini Cup, his speed and agility enabling him to bomb forwards and embarrass opposing players who try to stop him, and he’s solid defensively too. Shocked everyone with a move to Apox. Has a chance to start, but is still a little unpolished and will yield to Abel for now.

MIDFIELDERS

#05 - DM - Ethan CANDELARIO - New Llama Capitals - 32
A bruising, physical defensive midfielder who Steeling will count on to keep things secure at the back. After a relatively long stint at Goodfeather FC, he returned to SuperLleague and immediately won a league title holding down the fort for the Capitals. Rumored to be retiring after the next World Cup.

#08 - CM - Damian BAO - Easthaven Centurion - 21
The youth team revelation is absolutely tireless, but at the same time is one of the fastest players on the team. His positioning and vision make him an expert at filling the role Ryan Reagan wanted him to fill for the U21s, but his penchant for landing accurate long-passes and his athleticism will make him a perfect fit for Explosive Football as well. Has made the jump to starting exceptionally quickly, and everyone has him pegged to be a massive success as a SuperLleague rookie.

#17 - CM - Jason SANTANA - Rosaria (ESH) - 30
Santana has had his share of issues off the field, including drug problems exacerbated by the fact that...he plays in Eshan. A somewhat quick, technically adept midfielder whose calling card is his stamina and strong positioning. Could get a shot at a starting position, but he’ll need to work even harder now that Bao has arrived.

#20 - CAM - Kurtis MANN - Emerald City Harmony - 26
When star midfielder Trevor Fournier went down early in the season, everyone assumed that Harmony were done. But out of the darkness came...Kurtis Mann, former Olympic East midfielder, who kept them in the race until the last day and racked up fifteen assists in the process. A hard-working midfielder with a brilliant passing touch, but also prone to injuries and inconsistency.

#21 - CM/CAM/RW - Elias MØLLER - Dinamo Visand - 24
While Möller is half-Llamanean, nobody expected the young Dinamo star to play for anyone but the Arondic national team, making his call up a huge surprise. It could be important, too - the teenager has already shown flashes of brilliance both as a winger and an advanced playmaker, and he possesses both strength and speed in buckets. Still a little bit raw, especially with his finishing, but could be a star. His athleticism and creativity have already launched him into the starting lineup.

#28 - CM - Lucas CHRISTENSEN - Olympic East - 26
A rising star in the SuperLleague before his career was cut short by Kyrinson’s relegation, Christensen has consistently been one of the best midfielders in the nation. Direct, physical, but at the same time very intelligent on the pitch, Christensen has it in him to be the next midfield general of the Tigers. Now entering his prime, he’ll get a chance to prove himself worthy of the title.

STRIKERS
#07 - LW/LM - Eva VELASQUEZ - Eastweald (COS) - 26
Velasquez is fast, agile, and possesses impeccable technique. However, while one would expect Velasquez, who trained in AC Bartolome's academy for three years, to adopt a flashier playstyle, she's instead far more direct and focused - although she can use tricks to get out of a pinch, she'll rarely use them if she doesn't have to. A decent distributor who developed a fantastic free-kick at Myana before making the move to Eastweald, where she’s now reaching her peak as a winger.

#09 - ST - Sophia TREVELYAN - Klyde (COS) - 29
A dual citizen who made history in 2014 by becoming the first woman to play in Eastham’s top tier, and since then she’s excelled at every challenge she’s faced. A strong playmaker, quick and agile enough to set up her own chances; decent enough at finishing to score off said chances, but also versatile enough to play as a False Nine. Trevelyan may play in the Sekundar Ligan, but she’s one of the most underrated players on this team.

#10 - ST - Ansel PENBROOKE - Bishop (NPH) - 31 [VC]
Considered the heir to Cartwright’s throne, Penbrooke has possibly surpassed his predecessor as the greatest Llamanean striker to ever play for the national team. Patistan offered him forty million dollars and he declined to head over to one of the best youth teams in the world. Penbrooke is very athletic, and maturation in Apox, Vilita, and now Nephara have turned his potential and talent into a top-notch striker. Expected to continue leading the line for years to come.

#11 - AM - Miroslav VOROBYOV - FC Samotath (COS) - 32
Vorobyov has excelled in Cosumar with Samotath, and his quick, incisive presence, intelligence with the ball, and ability to break defenses with his runs makes him best on the flanks or as a WC74 Felix Rasmussen-esque free-floating CAM. Not very strong, but exceptionally agile and creative, and his thin frame hides a fierce long-distance shot.

#18 - L/RW - Annalisa SIGURDSSON - New Llama Stars - 24
It’s taken him a while, but Steeling has finally found Eva Velasquez a backup in Annalisa Sigurdsson. A direct, incisive winger who can play on either wing, Sigurdsson is best-known for her free=kick prowess. Definitely has enough quality to start, even if Velasquez is blocking her at the moment.

#36 - ST/RW - Carsten VINCENT - New Llama Stars - 24
Vincent is a top-notch winger who scored eleven goals in twenty league games in his first full season with Stars - the twenty-one-year-old has an excellent finishing touch and is known for his athleticism. Could break into the starting lineup very soon.

Football is one of the three national sports within Coldfield - along with Boxing and Archery. Practiced since 1890 yet the first national football tournament was held in 1950 - the Commonwealth Cup. In early years football teams were quite amateur and they took part in regional championships: North, Central Mountains, South, and West. Nowadays Coldfieldian clubs play in a yearly domestic cup, three national leagues, and six regional conferences. The Coldfieldian National Football Team (the CNFT) was established in late 2016 and took part in Baptism of Fire 64, being eliminated by Amnarei-asud in the penalties after a dramatic match in the quarter-finals. Coldfield also participated in the WC 77 and Campionato Esportiva 19; in the former CNFT was eliminated in the qualification stage after a "cringe-worthy" campaign; in the latter, Coldfield won just one match and didn't make into the round of sixteen. In the World Cup 78 qualifiers Coldfield had a real chance of qualifying, however, the 1-2 loss for Tinhampton at the Crownsville Palace Colossus destroyed any chances our team had, finishing fourth in Group Three with eight wins, four draws, and four losses. CNT also took part in Cup of Harmony 70 and DuPont Charity Cup, being eliminated in the group stage and second round respectively.
The twentieth edition of Campionato Esportiva will be marked by the official retirement of Steven Chamberlain from the Coldfieldian National Team at the age of 32.

Islana Lunigo, a happy little island of 5,500, resides itself within the eastern depths of Esportiva, the mightiest region of modern NSS. Allying itself as the right-hand nation to the magnificent Qasden, the community boasts itself on having one of the happiest citizen rates of the Qailpyme Orginization.

Every year, the capital city of Moaria is flocked frequently by lovely ignorant tourists for their star-stunning beaches and spectacular cuisine, not to mention an extensive list of aquatic recreation centers. On the far side of the island, rural sprawls of luscious rain forests and water falls fill the void uninhabited by the native Lunigans, whom are of the only few peoples allowed south of the center mountain, Mt. Sutu. Like its cat-loving companion, Islana culture enjoys the partaking in various sports, including (but not limited to) beach soccer, archery, tennis, volleyball, and even baseball. Internationally, Islana made its greatest prominences in the World Baseball Classic and Beach Soccer World Cup. While terrible at the multiversal scale, Islana baseball had participated in approximately 3 tournaments, more than many other Qailpyme teams in any tournament. At the 12th Beach Soccer World Cup, the Dragonites managed to reach the semifinals before balling out to the fiery San Jose Guayabal team.

But sand isn't the only flooring where Islana plays the beautiful game on. The island is home to Moaria FC, an association football club currently partaking in Qasden's tier-2 league, FP League. The national team itself has made its way to 2 appearances at Campionato Esportiva, both ending miserably. After much debate prior to the unveiling of the 78th cycle, the Qailpyme Orginization Department of Athletics announced plans for the island's team to join the Vans on the bigger playing field, aka, the World Cup Qualifiers, for a chance to travel to Cosumar and/or Bonesea for the proper. After falling in the group stages in the Baptism of Fire in Spaam and Drawkland, the team went on to finish 3rd in their qualifier group, a stunning yet bloodrushing feat, falling just shy of qualifiers, Spaam and Gregoryisgodistan. Having missed out on the 70th Cup of Harmony, the Islanders look to capitalize their newfound hope at the 20th Campionato Esportiva, a tourney they've tried and failed twice before. Will Team Islana bring the Esportivan glory back to the lil island? Only one place to discover that, and that is Mattijana!

"Fantasy versus Reality" by Evdis Palam

Fantasy, a realm of courteous desires,
full of your secretest of treats and your own empire.
From mountains far and rivers near,
your imagination lays nowhere but here.
But when faced with reality, you must concede,
for the perils it provides will leave you to plead.
Life, death, romance and heartbreak,
reality would dry up your plentiful lake.

Fantasy, a world of woundless woes,
for the only stories that happen are the ones you chose.
In Reality, your heartstrings must be bold,
for its true story is the only one left untold.

Golutian Football Team

---

After the World Cup brung interest in international football to the public in Goluta, an official Golutian national football authority was convened, under the name of Munrikneff Faxjjam Nannsjell Gollutajenn, MFNG for short. To lead the first 'official' Golutian National Team, Stilejo nKellik was chosen, who has a rich history of leading Golutian teams, and has won the Golutian competition 8 times by now. He selected the first 11 players to enter the field under the Golutian banner, and to fight on the field officially for Miss Garatti, the national mascot of Goluta, as shown in the flag. The first international competition since the erection of the MFNG was the CE XX, which will be the first appearance of nKellik's insight on the international stage.

THE COLONY OF THE FHULGHAMOUS PENINSULA
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL TEAM

The Colony of the Fhulghamous Peninsula (Full-Gah-Moose) was first established on 6 December 2008, when Fleftic explorers landed on what was then a previously undiscovered continent. These explorers landed on a large peninsula that they named Fhulghamous because of its rich and lush green forests. One of the explorers then fell into an old mine shaft while exploring the peninsula and discovered that the entire peninsula was lying on top of one of the biggest diamond deposits ever discovered by mankind. Once the explorers announced their discovery to the Fleftic government, the Democratic Republic Army Corps of Engineers was quickly dispatched to help speed up the establishment of the colony by helping in constructing settlements and assisting in constructing mining facilities to extract the diamonds within the land.

The Colony of the Fhulghamous Peninsula was officially established as a colony of the Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft on 6 September 2010 following the signing of Democratic Republic Act No. 2340. The colony's capital would be Port Thimpodopoulos, named after Sergeant Major Pythagoras Thimpodopoulos of the Army Corps of Engineers, who tragically died of a heart attack during the construction of the settlement that would eventually bear his name. Today, Port Thimpodopoulos has a population of ten million, accounting for just under half of the total population of the colony. Other cities in the colony were Besanza, Tadoki, Haritzaga City and Thereisnogodabad, home of Multiverse Premier League club Thereisnogodistan FC.

The colony is under the leadership of Governor-General Petrarchos Kulbano, brother of Minister of Colonial Affairs Demetrios Kulbano. His rule saw the Fhulghamous Peninsula's ascent to being one of the most economically-productive colonies of the Democratic Republic, but due to the colony's distance from the mainland Governor Kulbano is slowly beginning to treat the colony as his own personal fiefdom. This was one of the reasons why he had decided to send forth a petition to send a national team to the Di Bradini Cup, the Multiverse's top under-21 football competition. Unfortunately due to some last-minute troubles, the Fhulghamous Peninsula's team was not allowed entry into the Di Bradini Cup, leaving many people in the colony a bit unfulfilled. But when another chance to send forth a national team revealed itself, Governor Kulbano was quick to submit his team's entry, and this time he made sure that the wouldn't miss out on another chance at participating in an international competition.

The current team is mostly composed of players 21 years old or younger since Governor Kulbano originally envisioned this team participating in the Di Bradini Cup. Any players older than 21 were supposed to be coaching staff for the attempt at the U-21 Cup, but circumstances had forced to suiting up for their colony for this tournament. Nevertheless, everyone believes they've got what it takes to win it all. Also, following the relative success of the team in the Runner Cup and the Campionato Esportiva, a local league system has now been established in the colony, even as their two most successful teams (Marinos Thimpodopoulos and Thereisnogodistan FC) are now part of the Fleftic league system.

BASIC INFORMATION
Name of Nation: The Colony of the Fhulghamous Peninsula
Demonym: Fhulghamousian, Colonist
Team colors: Green and gray
Style modifier: +4.00 (Yet another very attacking side)
Manager: Orestes Katsouranis Jr. (53 y/o, Fhulghamous Peninsula)
Assistant manager: Paulus Wolf (51 y/o, Pridnestrovia)
Trainer: Wendell Beckett (69 y/o, Abanhfleft)

STARTERS
GK: CAPOEIRISTA
32 y/o, Airbus Fhulghamous Besanza Image, vice-captain
Bradini Vazconcelos Redentor, as Capoeirista is called in real life, is one of the better keepers playing both for and in the Fhulghamous Peninsula. Named after the well-known international football star Simone Di Bradini, Capoeirista seemed destined to play as a forward, but alas, he found himself more comfortable playing between the goalposts, and that was how he ended up playing as a goalkeeper. When he's not playing football, he teaches people in the martial art of capoeira, which is how he gained his current nickname. His capoeira skills have also proved intangible once he combined it with his goalkeeping training to become one of the best keepers in the colony, producing spectacular saves that are almost akin to martial arts moves. There's no question that he's a good keeper, but the team's performance in the recent Campionato Esportiva doesn't really reflect that, but it could be said that it's more the fault of the defense than Capoierista's personally. Can they improve in time for the World Cup qualifiers?

RB: Pau PALOMER 23 y/o, Thereisnogodistan FC Image (playing in the Fleftic Premier League)
Once again, nothing much distinguishes Pau from the rest of the center backs in the Fleftic sphere of influence. About the only noteworthy thing about him is that he shows excellent defensive skills for his age and has now become a starter for Thereisnogodistan FC. Why exactly he's still not starting is a bit of a mystery, but with John Montemayor looking more and more likely to announce his retirement from both club and international football anytime soon, Pau might soon just get the chance to represent the Fhulghamous for real this time.
UPDATE: John Montemayor has finally announced his retirement from international football, and Pau Palomer has been named the new starting right back of the Fhulghamous national team.

RCB: Naftali SINGERSTEIN 25 y/o, Sporting Ceneisis Image (Abanhfleft)
A promising young center back whom Sporting Ceneisis immediately snapped up as soon as the Colonists' campaign in the Campionato Esportiva was over, but then immediately sent him on loan to Oontaz Dert Li Ng's Botafogo de Maranao. Singerstein is the kind of center back to sit back and be the last man between the keeper and any marauding attackers, although a lot of times he has to be reminded that there is such a thing as the offside rule. If he does play someone offside, most often it will be by accident. Now back at Ceneisis.

LCB: John HAINAUT 23 y/o, Miroz Old Boys Image (Abanhfleft)
The other half of Fhulghamous's central defensive pairing. Hainaut has since picked up a contract for Miroz Old Boys in the second tier of Fleftic football. He's the kind of defender that moves up with the attack and takes the occasional long shot from outside the box from time to time, but he does well to go back to the defense when the opponent marauds up the field. Still, he's caught out of position more times than not, but he's young, and there's still time to learn how to be a proper center back.

LB: Tatsuo KAMAKURA 24 y/o, Marinos Thimpodopoulos Image (playing in the Fleftic Premier League)
Maybe an older, more experienced left back could've been selected to play for the national side. Unfortunately, a left back from the Fhulghamous Peninsula better than Kamakura hasn't been discovered yet, so the team will have to settle for him for the moment. But surely there must be some quality in him though as he's been signed by Marinos Thimpodopoulos, the surprise package of the recently concluded Fleftic Premier League season. An older and more experienced left back with championship-winning experience has now been found in Riuwiee United's Sokratis Tzorvas, but because Tatsuo has since proven himself capable for the Fhulghamous, Tzorvas will sit on the bench unless something bad happens to Tatsuo.

RM: Elliot EDISON 29 y/o, Arsenal de Releinthi Image (Abanhfleft)
Elliot is all about speed and pace. In the training grounds, he's almost as fast as the fastest man on earth, and no teammate has ever managed to beat his time in sprints. But in scoring goals, where it matters most, Elliot has been a little bit lacking. Sure, he makes good runs into pockets of space, but when it's time to apply the finishing touch, he just can't seem to find the back of the net more times than he does. The fact that people consider Elliot scoring 10 goals for Arsenal de Releinthi in a given season a milestone is an indicator of his lack of shooting prowess, which has led to confusion on whether he's more suited to be a playmaking midfielder rather than a goalscoring winger. He used to play for Abanhfleft in friendly games and a few qualifying matches but has since managed to shift his allegiance to the Fhulghamous Peninsula due to the fact that his grandfather Uriah Edison is now a colonial councilor alongside the likes of Rashidunnin Ali.

RCM: Kieran MOSKOWITZ 23 y/o, Polaris Image (Ceni)
Box-to-box midfielder who got a contract with Pridnestrovia's Palatine Opals due to his impressive work in the Runner Cup and the Campionato Esportiva. Looks to repeat his earlier heroics for the country in this Global Cup of Soccer. Finally earned a well-deserved move abroad to Polaris in Ceni.

LCM: Lucian VON FRANKREICH 26 y/o, Union Rheinburg Image (Pridnestrovia)
The other Fhulghamousian central midfielder was signed by another Pridnestrovian club, namely Union Rheinburg. Frankreich is a holding midfielder who can get the ball out of sticky situations and feed passes to the attack, although he is susceptible to being crowded out with the right pressure.

LM: Aidan POWER Jr. 26 y/o, Zoloroni Metropolitan FC Image (Mercedini)
The only mystery around Aidan Junior, son of local Nepharim legend Aidan Power Sr., is why such a good right midfielder such as himself has been passed over by almost every club that could possibly sign him. He's good enough to play for a Premier League side, but not even Godric Wexler and Arsenal de Releinthi had taken a chance on him. There must be an element to his game that has turned off teams to him. Is there hope for him to get a club this time around? Apparently there is, as Mercedini's Zoloroni Metropolitan has decided to take him onboard. He also used to play in right midfield but with Elliot Edison now cleared to play for the Fhulghamous, Aidan Junior will be moved to the left where he has shown flashes of even more blinding brilliance.

CF: SEBASTIANO Pelucci 28 y/o, Riuwiee United Image (Abanhfleft), captain
The other player who plays in the Fleftic Premier League, Sebastiano is a recognized striker playing for Riuwiee United, one of the top teams in the Fleftic top tier. He's got his fair share of goals for both club and country, and he'll be looking to add to his tally in the Campionato Esportiva.
IMPORTANT: This player should be referred as Sebastiano to differentiate him from his brother Salvatore Pelucci.

CF: Max FETFATZIDIS 27 y/o, Rosenpfelblatz City Image (Abanhfleft)
No one had been paying attention to Max before he helped get Marinos Thimpodopoulos promoted to the Fleftic Premier League, and his amazing 32 goals that season was enough to earn him a N$40m transfer to Rosenpfelblatz City. Max would've taken over Sebastiano Pelucci's spot, but Mephistopheles injured himself playing baseball with the Trendstart Conquistadors, so Max is starting for the Fhulghamous now.

RESERVES
GK: Timothy MERLINSON 20 y/o, Acoflosa United Image (Mercedini)
Timothy is an average goalkeeper in an average team, literally. There's nothing that sets him apart from other goalkeepers both in Abanhfleft and the Fhulghamous Peninsula, and while he may have once been part of Marinos Thimpodopoulos' academy and stood a good chance of making it into the first team, he decided to take his chances somewhere and requested that he be cut from the team. This resulted in him becoming a bit of a wanderer, flitting in and out of teams throughout the Fleftic sphere of influence, and this is also most probably what cost him the chance to take the starting spot in the Peninsular national team when Rashidunnin Ali decided to hang up his boots once again. But Timothy has appeared to have finally settled down with Mercedini's Acoflosa United, where he hopes to make an impacteven if it's just off the bench.

GK: Wanakamahaga DUDABULATULA 20 y/o, Charalambos FC Image
Dudabulatula (that's his given name, by the way) is the crown prince of the Ebolatuli, the largest local tribe living in the Fhulghamous before the arrival of the Fleftic colonists. The integration of the local tribes into the colony is a story that has a lot of twists and turns in it, but it's safe to say that the Ebolatuli are one of the tribes that have managed to survive the transition into the 21st century with their sanity and cultural identity relatively intact. They also took really well to association football, and Dudabulatula is just one of many young people from the tribe who are looking to get opportunities to see the rest of the multiverse through the medium of sport. Expect to see little of him, though, unless something bad happens to either Tim Merlinson or Capoeirista.
IMPORTANT: This player should be always referred to as Dudabulatula since Wanakamahaga is a clan name (used to refer to the clan as a whole and not just to a single member).

DEF: Einar CARLSON 29 y/o, West Releinthi City Image (Abanhfleft)
There's nothing much to distinguish Einar from all the other right backs in the Fleftic sphere of influence, but when it comes to getting the job done, he gets the job done come what may. Einar also used to play for Athletic Haritzaga (not to be confused with Real Haritzaga, another Peninsular team playing int the Fleftic pyramid) before making the move to West Releinthi, and his three years of residency in the colony made Einar eligible to play for the Fhulghamousian national team when it was first established by Governor-General Petrarchos Kulbano.

DEF: Kay STEENSEN 22 y/o, Inter Norgrad Image (Endelos)
Kay showed up for a trial session for the Fhulghamousian national team one day just wanting to watch who would get to represent the colony to the rest of the multiverse when a football rolled towards him and he decided to play around with it and do a few dribbles, rabonas, and other such stunts. This attracted the attention of Governor-General Petrarchos Kulbano, who was busy assembling the team, and a Rosenpfelblatz City scout by the name of Matthew Cave, and Kay found himself in both teams that same afternoon. Unfortunately for Kay, skills could only take him so far on the pitch for Rosenpfelblatz, arguably one of the top teams in Abanhfleft, and he found himself going to Underfell in Anglatia alongside Abanhfleft under-21 starlet Jeanine Stober in exchange for making permanent the then-two-year loan of Under-15 World Cup bronze medalist Blaze Chrzanowska. But following anti-Fleftic sentiments in Valeria at the end of the Nordskanian War (due to Abanhfleft's non-interference with the Pridnestrovian invasion of Nordskania despite the Treaty of Politovskaya which is basically now just a fancy piece of paper), Kay is on the move once again, this time to Inter Norgrad in Endelos.

DEF: Sokratis TZORVAS 31 y/o, Riuwiee United Image (Abanhfleft)
Since the Fhulghamous Peninsula national football team was formed with the express intention of competing in the Di Bradini Cup (aka the Under-21 World Cup), Sokratis wasn't really in Governor-General Petrarchos Kulbano's radar when it came to recruiting players from the available pool. But when the Fhulghamous' bid for inclusion in the Di Bradini Cup met with failure, Governor Kulbano looked to local players from which to recruit players for the national team. Besides, Tzorvas had little if any links to the Fhulghamous except for the straw-grasping fact that people of Greek descent were representing the Fhulghamous. But now that Tzorvas' second cousin twice removed has become a colonial councilor alongside Rashidunnin Ali and Uriah Edison, Sokratis has been cleared to play for the Fhulghamous.

DEF: Aziz ZAMAN 25 y/o, Sarvusdalamoive Image (Abanhfleft)
Aziz used to be one of the hottest young defenders in Abanhfleft, and by hot I mean that he had world class potential in all those football video games people love to use to predict who will become rising stars and who will be destined to become flops. Unfortunately it appears as if Aziz is headed for the "flop" route as his time in Sarvusdalamoive has been limited even as other Fleftic Premier League clubs keep raiding the Pinks for their top talents now that they've put an end to their reputation as a yo-yo club. Still, because of a lack of defenders willing to represent the Fhulghamous (Evangelos Christodoulopoulos being a prime example), Aziz keeps his place in the side for now.

MID: Samson LOVEJOY 29 y/o, Keephall Vikings Image (Abanhfleft)
In the few appearances for the Fhulghamous that he made from the bench, Samson showed that he was a capable defensive midfielder with a capability to send in shots from beyond the box and it was for this reason that Keephall picked him up to bolster their team in their campaign to return to the Fleftic Premier League (a job which they still haven't achieved after almost ten years of playing in the Unang Liga, the second tier of Fleftic football).

MID: Ferdinand TAVISTOCK 27 y/o, Sporting Ceneisis Image (Abanhfleft)

MID: Brendan MEEKS 26 y/o, AC Sainati Image (The Askari Union)

FW: SALVATORE Pelucci 27 y/o, AFC Langtree Image (Mercedini)
Salvatore, Sebastiano Pelucci's twin brother, can play both as a central forward and as a winger, but he is truly most effective playing up front. He and Sebastiano used to be teammates in Riuwiee United before Salvatore was unexpectedly cut from the team by Georges Leblanc back when the Frenchman was still managing the Blue Tribesmen. Salvatore kept his footballing skills sharp by suiting up for amateur Fhulghamousian sides until Mercedini's AFC Langtree finally offered him a permanent contract to play for them. It looks like he likes being in Mercedini at the moment.
IMPORTANT: This player should be referred as Salvatore to differentiate him from his brother Sebastiano Pelucci.

HOME STADIUM (ARENA MARINOS, PORT THIMPODOPOULOS)
Image
Arena Marinos is the home ground of both FC Marinos Thimpodopoulos, which plays in Abanhfleft's Premier League (first level of the Fleftic football league system) and the Fhulghamous Peninsula national football team. It has a total capacity of 35,673 spectators. Now back in service after a magnitude 6.2 earthquake caused part of the stadium's roof to collapse and devastated the capital city of the colony, necessitating a lot of repairs.

RICHARD DAWKINS PARK, THEREISNOGODABAD
Image
Richard Dawkins Park has a capacity of 23,171 spectators. Following a magnitude 6.2 earthquake that devastated Port Thimpodopoulos, all Fhulghamous Peninsula home matches were held in RDP in Thereisnogodabad while repairs were being made on Arena Marinos. With Arena Marinos now fixed, both the Fhulghamous Peninsula Football Association and Thereisnogodistan FC have reached an agreement in which RDP will serve as an alternate venue for national team games in recognition for the time that Richard Dawkins Park served as the home stadium of the national team following the earthquake.

THE CHIEFDOM OF COPPER CUPRUM
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL TEAM

This is the third time that Copper Cuprum will be participating in the Campionato Esportiva. Copper Cuprum had been long isolated from the international community since it is a small island archipelago located deep in the middle of the Lazarus Ocean, far from any regular shipping lanes since man first sailed ships. The nation was only discovered by the Fleftic Navy in 1914, when they were searching for the daughter of President Rufus Wole Mensah, whose ship was wrecked in the general vicinity of the islands. Arriving in the capital of the islands, they discovered that Chief Zed had made the President's daughter his queen, generating a sudden alliance between the two countries. And Copper Cuprum was also rich in copper, so that was a good thing for Abanhfleft too...

BASIC INFORMATION
Name of nation:
The Chiefdom of Copper Cuprum
Demonym: Copperite
Kits: The Copper Cuprum national football team does not wear any kits as ordinary people know them. Instead they play wearing only white loincloths, studded shoes, shin guards. The keeper also has gloves along with the aforementioned kit.
Team colors: Black and white
Style modifier: +1.00 (A balanced team with a slight focus on offense)
Formation: 4-5-1
Head coach: Jefferson Kalangitan (51 y/o, Oontaz)
Notes: It is Copperite tradition to slit the throat of a live chicken before a game and then spread the spilled blood on the field. However, after the Valladar authorities advised the Copperite Football Federation against performing this tradition after local audiences were shocked by this tradition, it has been decided that in place of this tradition, Copperite players will now cut off the head of a rubber chicken before a game and then toss the head around like a hot potato. However, Copperite players will now perform the chicken sacrificing ritual whether or not the other team likes it. The Copperites hope to turn this tradition into their version of the haka. Also, this is Kalangitan's first head managing job after the Malabon SC assistant manager accepted to take over the Copperite side following the sacking of Duke Dorogi Dorogo due to the team's poor results in the Campionato Esportiva.

STARTERS
GK: Enera TEMOYO
33 y/o, Athletic Wa Gon Image
Quite short for a keeper, but he does the job well enough to be the starting keeper for Athletic Wa Gon, the marquee team of the Copper Cuprum National League. But this doesn't mean much as the National League is considered as the least competitive of the leagues in the countries within Abanhfleft's sphere of influence.

RB: Tumoka BATUBA 29 y/o, Rosenpfelblatz North End Image (Abanhfleft)
Solid right back, but still quite raw for his age. Sometimes advances a little too far into the offense to the other backs' liking. Thinks of himself as a wingback, but simply doesn't have the speed or the feet to get quickly between offense and defense and can't make a cross to save his life. Still gets lucky sometimes, though.

RCB: Ziketsy TUKUKU 20 y/o, Copper Cuprum Halal Commission Image

LCB: Derek CHIDAGI 30 y/o, Miroz Old Boys Image (Abanhfleft)
An immigrant to Abanhfleft that decided to play for his motherland after all. He's probably the only really good defender in this lot, and therefore bears the brunt of the defensive work for the team. He still has his problems, though, meaning that he will think nothing of tripping up any opposing players that are goalbound. Will probably concede a lot of penalties.

LB: Esteke INANUK 34 y/o, Handon United Image (Schottia)
Not really the best defender in Copper Cuprum, but certainly not the worst one either. Truth be told, though, he only looks good because many of his other teammates are shit. Placed in a world-class back line, he'd be the first player that disappears from notice. But when Inanuk performs well, he performs well and in a sublime manner. Earned a well-deserved move to Handon United in Schottia where he has been quietly doing his job as always.

RM: Boyote TOROTO 31 y/o, Sporting Busov Image (Abanhfleft)
Holds the midfield good enough, but still makes mistakes from time to time. Attacks from time to time but really hinders more than helps.

CM: Tabaré ZUÑIGA 34 y/o, Sporting Ceneisis Image (Abanhfleft)
Now that Prince Deg's favoritism for members of his personal retinue his injury woes have finally been cleared up, Tabaré is finally getting that well-deserved spot in the starting eleven, but it may have come too late for Copper Cuprum though, as Tabaré's already 34 at this point in time and he's not going to get any younger. He used to be more of a box-to-box midfielder but age has caught up with Tabaré and the team now relies on him being the rock in the midfield between the Copperite defense and the opposition's attack.

LM: Morefor TOFODO 33 y/o, General Santos F.C. Image (Oontaz)
Doesn't show up in big games, yet doesn't show up in minor games also. Surprising why he got included in the starting eleven at all. The fact that he's part of Prince Deg's retinue may have something to do with it, though. But now we know why Tofodo starts for Copper Cuprum: it's because of his wicked good set pieces. Free kicks, corner kicks, penalty kicks (when Prince Deg is unavailable, of course); you name it, Morefor Tofodo can actually take it.

RW: Opatop LAZAROVSKI 30 y/o, Sheriff Tiraspol Image (Pridnestrovia)
Half Pridnestrovian and half Copperite, he almost played for his father's country before Prince Deg conferred upon him a peerage that convinced him to play for Copper Cuprum. He is a half-decent winger that nevertheless will not be able to get into the starting eleven of any other nation in the world.

CF: Prince DEG 32 y/o, unattached, captain
The Crown Prince of Copper Cuprum and heir apparent of Chief Gon. Prince Deg is also the head of the Copperite Football Federation, a position that he created by royal decree after creating the federation, also by royal decree. He bills himself as "the best center forward in the multiverse," but so far he hasn't done anything to back up that claim. At the moment, even Abanhfleft's Kareem Dagen plays better than Prince Deg.

LW: Tyrone ZUDAZET 33 y/o, Gyouza Young Lads Image (Abanhfleft)
Another member of Prince Deg's retinue that nevertheless deserves his place in the starting eleven. A landed noble with a barony under his fief, Zudazet is half-Fleftic and plays for a club in the Democratic Republic while at the same time flying the Copperite flag proudly.

SUBSTITUTES
GK: Nikoba LOBATO
19 y/o, Athletic Wa Gon Image

GK: Torege BITAMBO 28 y/o, Sporting Busov Image (Abanhfleft)
Backup keeper, currently serving as Temoyo's understudy. Could become next national keeper if something very bad happens to Temoyo. Luck (and time) don't appear to be on his side though as he has been displaced from backup keeper to reserve goalkeeper by Temoyo's actual understudy from Athletic Wa Gon, Nikoba Lobato.

DEF: Tenoka ITORO 31 y/o, Gryphons Nubalochi Image (Oontaz)
Described by Prince Deg himself as "The Big Man." Competes with Desoka for the honor of being like Adebayo "The Beast" Akinfenwa. Pushes opponents left and right for a bit of morning exercise. And don't get me started on calisthenics.

DEF: Lazar DENISOV 19 y/o, Admiral Tuzla Image (Pridnestrovia)

DEF: Idaran SOBODO 33 y/o, Pamunas F.C. Image (Abanhfleft)
Some of the players in the reserves are only there because there is a need by the World Cup Committee to have enough substitutes in every position. Sobodo is filling in for one of those emergency positions. But looking beyond Prince Deg's obvious favoritism tough task of organizing a capable Copperite team, Sobodo does have his uses, mainly attracting yellow cards and red cards from the referee. But when he doesn't find his name in the book, Sobodo does a good enough job of pumping crosses into the box and tripping up the opposition players trying to do the same in the Copperite box.

CM: Amitu SUDEBA 28 y/o, Ken Gon United Image

MID: Sitere BUWATA 29 y/o, Duhblakk Rovers Image (Abanhfleft)
This kid has a future in midfield, what with his flashy playmaking style. He's only in defense because he's been put there by the Fleftics at Duhblakk. Turns out that was only a move to improve the defensive side of his game, and with six years gone, surely Buwata has finally hit his peak?

MID: Umaga HAROBA 27 y/o, Athletic Wa Gon Image

MID: Paul MAGINOO 18 y/o, General Santos F.C. Image (Oontaz)

FW: Aramok TODEYET 29 y/o, Union Rheinburg Image (Pridnestrovia)
We need backup forwards, even though none of them can possibly replace Prince Deg in the starting eleven, unless of course the Prince gets injured.

FW: Douglas JAMESON 19 y/o, Sporting Ceneisis Image (Abanhfleft)

FW: Wesley WEYLER 19 y/o, FC Afa-az Image (Abanhfleft)

Mattijanan Roster and Information for Campionato Esportiva 20

The Story So Far

The theme of Mattijanan World Cup fortunes seem to be optimism, with few results. The team has never looked like progressing from their qualifying group in all 3 attempts at doing so and still have work to do before they can eventually get there.
Despite that, regional performances have brought more hope, with Mattijana making progressive improvements at each of the three Campionato's they have been involved in. The general feel of improving fortunes was then justified at CE 19 as Mattijana came top of their group, ahead of highly ranked Red Blackiland, and eventually bowed out on penalties to Apox in round 2 of the loser's draw. Matej Ljubanik's side left Boring Paradise with a record high rank of 15th.

Despite the unlucky exit, optimism was further fuelled by the Mattijanan Department of Sport managing to secure hosting rights to the 20th edition of the tournament. Reversion to a more conventional format and a passionate group of home crowds, as well as a fresher feel to the squad may just come together to help Mattijana go further than ever before.

Recent CE Results:
Mattijana 1-1 Apox, 1-1 AET, 1-2 Penalty kicks
Mattijana 3-0 Batto Vittolo
Mattijana 0-1 Port Christopher
Mattijana 1-1 Red Blackiland
Mattijana 1-0 Optima Consortium

Team Info

World Rank: 99
Style Modifier= +3
Team Colours: Green and yellow
Away kit: Navy and Black
National Association: MattijanaFusbalBand (MFB)

Head Coach: Matej Ljubanik
After a successful, but not scintillating playing career, Ljubanik started his management career with mid-table division 2 side, Savaflug, who had recently lost Max Juremchuk to division 1 side Revinka. He lead the side to an unexpected 3rd in the table, just short of a promotion place, but achieved his goal of promotion the following year at which point there was speculation of him making a move to FK Petrovijanka or to Puljanka. Out of loyalty, he remained at Savaflug for a season, ensuring they retained their top flight status with a 14th/20th finish, before making the move to FK Petrovijanka.
After a slow start, Ljubanik began to make progress with his style of football and managed to lead his side to fifth in the championship with the promise of more progress the following year. That duly arrived with an incredible start to the season giving way to a consistent run of points that ended with a comfortable championship victory.
Another decent run at the start of his third season with the club saw Petrovijanka sitting in second place in the championship behind FK Burges. At that point, the national side began to show interest and Ljubanik made the commitment that was wanted by everyone apart from the supporters of Petrovijanka.

Ljubanik has a calm style of football with passing play encouraged and a punchy counter attacking system. Defensively, he likes to see meticulous organisation and clear defensive shape, something that was somewhat lacking under the previous coaching team. Despite more defensive beginnings, Ljubanik is becoming more confident in his attack and has adopted a more flowing style with more goals following suit.

Assistant Manager: Dominik Samikov (FK Burges)

The assistant manager at Championship leaders FK Burges hails from the North-East of Mattijana and began his career at Dinamo Legisaw, another division 2 side before then moving as one of the tactical staff to FK Burges, where he has since worked his way up the pecking order to assistant manager. He has an excellent tactical mind as well as good player welfare skills and helps out Ljubanik in both management areas. He has so far proved himself to be a capable aid.

Head Scout: Marcel Kuzbacher

Marcel Kuzbacher is a seasoned scout, mainly plying his trade for the famed Puljanka Academy. He has links with numerous players in the Mattijanan squad as well as the under-21 side and makes up the 3-man selection panel alongside Samikov and Ljubanik.

Fitness Coordinator: Jelena Neumanič

Jelena Neumanič is responsible for the diet and fitness of the squad, freeing up the main management team to think about tactical matters. She has a solid variety of exercises and is well-known for getting on player's backs if they don't keep up with their expected effort levels.

Psychologist: Samira Kazmir

Samira Kazmir is an experienced sports psychologist who has done work for both the summer and winter Olympic teams, the Mattijanan ITT side and the MRT motor racing team. She is responsible for the mental welfare of players, stretching from the collective mind-set to more personal issues for each individual in the squad and may have a tough task on her hands if this tournament turns out like the last.

The Medical Team:

Head Doctor: Dr Charlotte Smitič
Assistant Doctor: Dr Mattias Buranov
Physio: Martina Laramazič
Physio: Mika Glasnić

The Players:

GK-Matej Handanović-#1

The 28 year old Mattijanan number 1 plays under Matej Ljubanik at FK Petrovijanka and has been a solid, if unspectacular option between the sticks for most of his career. He has good handling skills and makes few mistakes, but could be replaced if he fails to make the spectacular stops expected of him. He may also face renewed competition from the younger and more dynamic Martin Vaskaric

LB-Helena Neumann-#2

The Burges Player is a regular in the championship leading side and will provide a good defensive option with the occasional run forward to help out the wingers. Barring any injuries or unlikely suspensions, she will play all of Mattijana's matches,

CB-Edvard Crajasović-#3

The towering centre back is a regular for a Revinka side currently sitting fifth in the division 1 table. His height gives him a significant advantage when defending high balls and presents a threat at set-pieces. However, he can be clumsy when faced with skilful runners and does rely on a more quick-footed defensive partner in order to be successful.

CB-Katija Burnisevič-#4

Another Burges Player, Burnisevič is a potential answer to Crajasović's clumsiness and is a quick, skilful and sure-footed player capable of taking the fight to those attempting to run through. She is a dedicated player, happy to chase any lost cause until the ball crosses the line. Her lack of physical strength may be her weakness however and she could be a potential target for more powerful strikers.

RB-Dominik Illisević-#5

Now a regular for FK Puljanka, Illisević is a punchy and pacey player with outstanding fitness and good crossing ability. His defensive technique is the biggest question mark, but if he can have a solid match at the back, he will undoubtedly be a danger coming forward.

LM-Sophia Velezia-#6

A mazy winger with less raw pace, but the ability to turn any defender into a messy knot, Velezia is a constant challenge to keep quiet on her day and normally gets through at some point if she hits top form. Her mercurial nature is her biggest and arguably only weakness, but Mattijana will be well-placed if she can get it together.

CM-Marko Hojbjerg-#7

Another young midfielder at just 24, Hojbjerg is a playmaker with good awareness and passing ability and is the perfect fit for Ljubanik's technical brand of football. Useful for connecting the more attacking players ahead of him, he is also integral in providing the start or the killer pass in a counter-attack. When no forward options are available, he's not afraid to hit one and occasionally finds the back of the net from improbable ranges.

CM-Jago Adrianov-#8

Adrianov is the typical midfield enforcer with a hard tackle and a driving run on him which can terrorise both attackers and other midfielders. He's also not afraid to hit one from range with varying success. He is probably the most likely player to pick up cards however, so could be a potential liability.

RM-Jessika Struna-#9

A pacey winger who's preferred play is to make a run and then a cross, the 25 year old Struna is a dynamic and different part of the Mattijanan team. Tipped for a move to Petrovijanka or Burges, Struna chose to stay at Revinka, close to her family and in the town she loves.

FW-Mathilde Lekarisa-#10

Rapid Petrovijanka's 27 year old forward is a lethal finisher with a left foot that makes up for a lack of power with high precision. She enjoys running onto through balls and cutting inside to curl shots into the far corners of the goal. She is expected to play well having scored 5 goals in her last 4 games for Rapid.

FW-Andreas Weiss-#11

The 29 year old Burges Striker has been a fixture in the Mattijanan team for a while now and has matched his performances for the national side with consistent scoring form for FK Burges. He is a poacher with the ability to be in the right place at the right time for any pull-back into the box. Also a good header of the ball, Weiss will be an intimidating target for high crosses if the Mattijanan plan-B is needed.

The Bench:

GK-Lucija Handanovic-#12-Age 25-FK Revinka
RB-Kevin Krychowiak-#13-Age 21-Matbirjke
CB-Marcel Hausmayer-#14-Age 31-FK Antalja
CM-Katarina Jakupovic-#15-Age 22-Sparta Snezn
RW-Sofiane Bisrali-#16-Age 21-FK Shalkar
CAM-Mattias Hoffman-#22-Age 23-Rapid Petrovijanka
ST-Daniella Alaba-#18-Age 25-Puljanka

The Reserves:

GK-Martin Vaskaric-#19-Age 21-FK Antalja
LB-Lara Ljunavic-#20-Age 27-FK Revinka
FW-Katja Tauskas-#21-Age 23-Matbirjke
CAM-Juliana Kjofmann-#23-Age 24-Weststrand FK

About Mattijana!

Mattijana is a huge safe nation with a significant, but proportionate population. It spans a fairly large range of climates with the far north a colder area, the central region temperate, the south Mediteranean and the South-East semi-desert. Petrovijanka, the setting for this competition, is located almost exactly in the centre of the country at 214-232 metres above sea level.

National Stadiums

Due to a large land mass and numerous good quality stadia, the Mattijanan FA prefers to rotate games around a few different grounds. Having said that, the Stadijo Nasinal and the Stadijo Dinamov play host to the bulk of the matches due to the central position of Burges and Petrovijanka, and their reputation for providing excellent hosting services.

Stadijo Dinamov
The Stadijo Dinamov in Petrovijanka is the second biggest football stadium in Mattijana and is one of the five stadiums that share the hosting honours for international matches. It is used on a weekly basis by FK Petrovijanka, Matej Ljubanik's old club, having built by them in 1940 and upgraded twice in 1972 and 2001. The capacity is 60,000.
The stadium is found to the north of the city's old town.
Stadijo Nasinal-Burges
Image

The Stadijo Nasinal is Mattijana's largest multi-purpose sports stadium with retractable grass and astroturf surfaces to cater for cater for Cricket, Hockey, Rugby and Football matches. There is a capacity of 90,000. The Stadium was built in 1985 and heavily upgraded just 2 years ago in preparation for the Cricket T20 World Cup. It is situated on the South bank of the Juliana river, just next to the water and just East of the NordesParke.

Filindostan State News Agency - fsna.fid

ISPORT
12-TEAM FFL TO BE LAUNCHED

San Marco - With the Filindostan National Football Team travelling to Mattijana for their debut Campeonato Esportiva campaign, the Filindostani National Sports Commission (KONF/FNSC), in cooperation with the Filindostani Football Group, will be launching the Filindostan Football League (FFL) that will have 12 participants in its first season. Teams across the nation will have an opportunity to participate in the league, which will send participants to UICA competitions.

According to Strike Cañedo, head of the FFG, eight teams have already expressed their interest in participating in the league. Rumored clubs include the rivals in the capital, Fortunas and Venividicci, along with the three Banda- clubs, Perseuno, Persedos and Persetres, along with PSSR Wardogs. The official website of Fipocor, the state power company had already sent a sponsored team to the league, as well as transportation cooperative San Lomar. The remaining teams are yet to be decided, but there are rumors that several local government units (LGUs) are interested in participating with their respective investors.

More information about the league will be released in the coming days.

GETTING TO KNOW THE EMPRESS OF THE PULA GARUDA

Before they departed to Mattijana by charter flight, we got to chat with some of the players of the team. The majority of the roster came from the rivaling clubs, Fortunas and Venividicci. Despite this, they are willing to set their rivalry aside and focus on getting national team experience in order for them to reach their dream of making it to football's biggest stage - the NS World Cup.

Dina Satyawan - The Empress at the Back

Hailing from Bandariyan, Dina started playing football at the age of seven, in the streets and the basketball courts. She was the captain of their team when she attended high school. She planned to take up medicine, but gave it up as Fortunas, who looked for players in the provinces to strengthen their squad, piqued their interest at her. She already passed the entrance examination at college when she decided to sign for the capital club. She worked her way up the ranks from the Under-21 team to the first team, having been captain at age 24 up to this day.

She loves eating pizza and spaghetti, and watching professional electronic sports titles. FSNA got a chance to interview her.

FSNA: Who among your Fortunas teammates in the national team will most likely to make an impact for the country?
DS: I would like to answer Bochog, since he's just 20 and he's destroying teams left and right in our footie festivals, but I have to go with Fizzy, his strike partner and "partner in life"... oops, sorry Bochog. She's really reliable and can deliver the goods off the bench, but I hope we can use 4-3-3 in our formation so we can deploy the pair plus Pokemaster, who herself is a rising star. She might not be playing at San Lomar come League time.

FSNA: Can you describe the relationship you have with your vice-captain (King)?
DS: We often clash with our ideas - me being a defense-minded person, and he's focused on all-out attacks, but we're friends off the pitch. He's actually good in singing in karaoke and he's a bit techy - I often borrow his console and play games in my apartment for hours!

FSNA: What do you think are your chances in your debut campaign?
DS: I'd rather not put pressure on Willy (the manager). He's coaching us in an interim basis and we'd like to show him that he chose the right players to represent the country in the coming campaign. If we perform well then it's indicative of our potential in our upcoming tournaments -
we're actually targeting a good finish in the Baptism of Fire in which we're expected to participate so we'll use this tournament to gauge our readiness and iron out issues if any arose.

FSNA: Thanks!

FSNA will have an interview with King after their first match, which is expected to be Tumbra. See you around.

FOOTBALL HISTORY

Rejoice as the thick curtain that has surrounded the island state of Buyan for the past decade has been lifted – not without the help of a little firepower, that was. Some of you might recall that back in 2025 the reign of Kazys Portnii, a post-communist ruler with fairly ridiculous but, most of the time, clinically benign quirks was replaced by an iron-first tyrant in Henrik Luberg. The man, whom we until recently all had to call the General, replaced a sympathetically backward dictatorship by a harsh and repressive regime. Not afraid to murder a share of his citizens, it seemed sensible – well, to him – to lock down all the borders and give those still attempting to get away a bullet-induced death.

One of the least enjoyable side-effects of Lubergs paranoia were his decisions to declare that Buyanese at the ‘wrong’ side of the border – ‘wrong’ entirely depending on your point of view here - would no longer be considered citizens of his fierce republic. On top of that, he forbid any further representation of Buyanese national teams, presumably avoiding further fleeing opportunities. Too bad as especially when it came to football, the Hedgehogs had built up a pretty fine reputation so far. That their success had been based on the excellent effect from foreign managers Sirius Hope, Reinhard Shale and Chris Maarsden certainly was something the new regime did not want to be reminded of. A nice scroll of honour, including two qualifications for the World Cup, a Baptism of Fire victory and two Campionato Esportiva triumphs in only twelve year, reached a swift and painful end.

Besides a painful end for the national team, the domestic Top Division was suddenly stopped in its tracks as well. Even if organised football, according to the limited news that reaches us from behind the iron curtain, still continues, the group of gifted foreign players that developed over the years have fled the nation – if they weren’t expelled. Grand names such as Viztourzys Kolektyvinis, winner of a Globe Cup and a CEdC, Bengtsmark IF, Champions Cup finalist and CEdC victor, and Blau-Weiss Pallstadt, the third club to win a regional title, no longer shine on the international platform. The amateur level, we can confirm, was numbingly drab and several magnificent names such as Tufte, Giertych, Dalmshelf and Lammerschon have retired.

In 2029, the UFC of Buyan, a gathering of political and social protesters to their expulsion of their native grounds, plead and begged amongst the few Buyanese footballers who were active in foreign competitions and almost all of them appeared willing to play for a new red-and-white. As the Buyanese Football Board officially opted out of the NSWC, it was possible for this group to partake – if only with a slightly different name. Amongst them, they’ve had gathered the remaining internationals still active, more often than not experienced players on the wrong side of thirty, and a few other guys who have integrated in the social network of their host country by playing football – not always that successfully. Guided by their experienced gaffer and civil rights advocate Sil Moen, they tried to qualify for the WC 74. After only a few games, they discovered that several secret agents had infiltrated their group and decided to withdraw from any further activity.

But the winter of 2033 saw a joyful change in atmosphere. It’s difficult to pinpoint what exactly ignited the fireworks in the political landscape of Buyan – some post-factum historians point to the revolutionary atmosphere in the whole Esportivan region, others point to the deteriorating economic situation leading to hunger strikes and a third category to a split amongst the closest supporters of the General, leaving Luberg exposed. Fact is that the straw that broke the camel’s back was an illegal publication with an overview of the ‘Best Buyanese Footballers’ which didn’t hesitate to laud those who earned their wage abroad such as Devold, Zemaitis and Marciak and included Sil Moen, probably the man Henrik Luberg feared most. His ludicrous reaction – burning piles of copies of everything football-related – started a popular uprising.

A few tens of thousands of deaths and a difficult yet – according to international observers ‘acceptably’ – open election later, the nation of Buyan had reincarnated in an enthusiast republic. Winning the election were the ‘Party of Liberators’, headed by no one but Sil Moen who added the title of President to a list that already contained former international and former manager. As could be predicted, his victory speech on the freshly rebranded Martyrs Square in the heart of Pajukas was met with a lot of applause, but mostly when he announced the return of the Top Division, the professional football competition, and the beloved Blue Hedgehogs. These Hedgehogs celebrated their return with a set of decent results but were no match for sides such as Barunia, Mriin & Farfadillis, to end up halfway their qualification group. An acceptable start which was followed by an astonishing semi-final in the Cup of Harmony.

SQUAD

The gaffer decided to use this Campionato Esportiva as a training ground for youngsters and players who did not receive full chances at the Cup of Harmony, which is only a month or two behind us. As a result, prepare for a squad that might not live up to the expectations of the World Cup cycle, but which might contain future talent.

Manager: Steponas Teriouris, 55, Image

Steponas is used to living success on the bench. In the early days of the Golden Period for Viztourzys, he was the back-up goalie for Manuel Schmidt. After stopping his active career at the honourable age of 41 – with a few Kolektyvinis trophies in the bag and playing minutes in the last match of the 2018 title season as heights – he joined the BFB. Initially as youth scout, later on as U17 and U21 manager. He became goalkeeper coach under Chris Maarsden, stepped up as the assistant manager for Sil Moen and is now, at last, manager of the team.

When you flee your home country knowing that every second of hold-up could be the second too much, there is stuff you forget. Old photographs. Food in the fridge. Large domesticated animals. And, apparently, the marvellous national shirts that were provided by AER Sportswear.

Luckily for the UFC, Krytenia-based multinational kit provider JMC showed compassion, providing them with the magnificent shirts displayed above. When returning to Buyan, it appeared that Sil Moen still had those in his suitcase and as most of the groundkeeping staff in the national stadium had found an untimely death, the old ones probably never will be recovered.

It's big, it's build on an unpractical location and if we believe the contractor, it's build on a swamp.
But it's also state of the art and featured some games in the Campionato Esportiva IX, hence the name. We’re aware it’s not being used this tournament, but hey, we like to share the info.

STYLE & TACTICS

Style Modifier: -2

Obviously, this is not the regular formation of the Buyanese side and it seems as if Teriouris is willing to let the 5-3-2 for what it is during this tournament, being aware that his best wingbacks are not present. The alternative will be a 4-4-2 diamond formation, with Gularis and Bursuk taking turns on goal. The back four is lead out by the impressive Viggo Stromberg who gets a trio of juniors to his side. Either Waldow or Vernerse will be the defensive midfield with two powerful players, Dobas and Karlsson doing the hard work. Surprisingly, Valter Isaksson refused to take rest but instead will lead out the team as the new superstar of this squad. Plenty of options in attack, but it seems as if Herbjornsrud will finally get a proper chance alongside domestic goalgetter Losnedahl.

Continued from here.

Young Guns, Part Thirteen

Guildenstern Cardew walked through the streets of this Spaamian city contemplating the result against Spaam in the quarterfinals of the 3rd Independents Cup. Ranulph Bustamante had promised that all three goalkeepers would be rotated throughout the campaign so that all of them would earn caps, appearances for the country that would raise their stock with their clubs and perhaps attract foreign interest in them as well. Guildy hadn't done too well in his first Independents Cup appearance, conceding three goals against an up-and-coming Aggrey-Fynn Land side so he had a feeling that Ranulph might just go back on his word and start Carlos Cohen against Schottia, who after all had actually won third place in the recently concluded World Cup. To his credit, Ranulph Bustamante didn't go back on his word and actually named Guildy in the starting lineup, but for all the time that Guildy lasted on the pitch, he might as well have just started Cohen anyway. Barely ten minutes into the match and already Guildy had gotten himself sent off for a ridiculous tackle on one of the Schottian players. He couldn't remember specifically who it was he had tackled, just that they were female and that their name started with C. So that meant it was either Corinne Martel-Burns or Camila Soria Luna. Guildy could already hear in his mind what the commentators were going to say about his tackle.

"Oh, boy, that's an American football-style tackle by Cardew on that poor Schottian girl right there! I mean, sure, he may not have had a lot of options, not with Schottia bearing down on you like that, but you just simply do not tackle the opposition player and think that you can get away with it! This is association football we're playing, my friend, not American football. I know that you own a stake in one of those new arena football teams, Guildenstern Cardew, and at such a young age, but you just have to remember that this is association football you're playing right now. A tackle like that just won't do you any good in soccer. I'm sorry, Guildy, but that's a stonewall red card and penalty any day of the week."

On the other hand, putting on Carlos Cohen still didn't make much of a difference as Schottia still scored four goals past him. They were still confident from their unbelievable run through the World Cup, after all, while Abanhfleft's team was assembled from the veterans of the youth teams of old and they were still all taking time to gel together. It was a lose-lose situation for Abanhfleft. Only if the New Revolutionaries got really, really lucky would they have been able to defeat this in-form Schottia side.

Guildy was so absorbed by his thoughts and introspection that he almost didn't hear the footsteps approaching him from behind. An arm draped over his shoulders and just like that, Tonya Heaton appeared by his side, followed just moments later by Miriam Hannibal. "Dammit, guys, don't do that, please!" Guildy said. "You know how much I hate you two sneaking up on me like that!"

"Oh, come on, Guildy, lighten up!" Mirian said. "Seventeen years old and already you're more tightly wound up than a drum! Just let loose, even for a little while!"

"Yeah, that's easy for you to say," Guildenstern said. "You girls won third place in the Cup of Harmony. What did we win? Nothing, that's what. I'm actually half expecting some Real Fans to pop up and cap my ass because I got myself sent off. That's why I went off on you guys for sneaking up on me."

"Ah, don't worry about those Real Fans," Tonya said. "The RBI is keeping an eye on them. They won't do anything major anytime soon, not after they got taken down big time in Qasden during the International Basketball Championships."

"Well, that's a relief," Guildy said sarcastically. "Anyway, what are you two doing here? You two aren't exactly dressed to play, if you know what I mean," he added, gesturing to the dresses that both women were wearing.

"Walk with us, Guildy, and we'll tell you everything," Miriam invited, and her arm took the place of Tonya's on Guildy's shoulders and this served as the signal for their trio to begin walking. "We're doing a very top secret mission for Marinos over here, Guildy," Miriam said. "Real hush-hush stuff, I'm telling you, although that's all I can tell you about it. Anyway, let's change the subject. Aren't you interested in finding out how our new arena football team is doing?" Miriam, Tonya, Guildy, and Wanakamahaga Dudabulatula of the Fhulghamous Peninsula national team had all invested in a new arena football team for the new Arena Football Association of Abanhfleft based in the Fhulghamous Peninsula called the Besanza Bravery. Arena football seemed to be really popular in Abanhfleft, especially now that the World Bowl was almost upon the people once again.

"Well, all right, now that you've brought it up, I am indeed interested in finding out how the Bravery is doing," Guildy said. "I've been meaning to keep myself updated but as you can see, I've been busy."

"Hey, there's no need for you to take that tone with us, Guildy," Tonya said. "We're all friends here, right? Birds of the same feather and all that. Anyway, it's been a mixed bag of results, if I have to be honest. You know how the Bravery beat the Vikrant Vimanas 47-41 in the first game. After that, we've been on a bit of a slide, though. Two losses against the Uranium City Icemen and the San Seriffe Rebeldes. The boys scraped a lucky win against the Riuwiee Attack next before it all went downhill again against the Sharknados and the Mystics."

"That bad, huh?" Guildy asked.

"What were you expecting? That our team would bowl over every other team there is?" Miriam asked. "Remember that most of the guys who wants to play arena football aren't exactly the best guys in American football; that's why they're willing to take a gander at this new sport."

"Don't get me wrong, I understand that," Guildy said. "But let's talk about the real reason why you two are here. You're scouting someone for the team, aren't you?"

"Well, that's obvious, isn't it?" Tonya bit her lip. "Well, what's wrong with that? Every other team does it. Chelsea, Alex, Sonny, all the others do it. Heck, probably some of the younger guys and girls from the youth teams also do some scouting for their teams, whether they're told to do it or they just see some player whom they think will benefit their team."

"Mind telling me who exactly it is you had in mind?" Guildy asked even though he knew the answer.

"You don't expect us to answer that, do you, Guildy?" Miriam asked with a guarded smile.

"What's with all the secrecy about now?" Guildy asked. "It's not like Besanza can compete with Marinos with regards to transfers. This rivalry thing between Besanza and Port Thim is just a little too forced. We're not playing in the same league; heck, our leagues are on way different levels. The players we can sign certainly aren't on the same level as the players you can sign, so why not just come out with it?"

"Ah, Guildy, if we did that, where's the fun in all the transfer rumormongering?" Miriam Hannibal asked once again, and this time the smile on her way was just plain teasing.

Right at that moment, a loud roar announced the arrival of a group of loud motorcycles. Guildy, Tonya, and Miriam turned around in time to see seven motorcycles pass by them, and on the backs of the motorcyclists they saw the Oriental skull patch and colors of the Huns Motorcycle Club. The group itself was made up of four men and three women, and they revved their engines as they passed by the smaller group. "What in the world?" Guildy asked. "What are the Huns doing all the way here in Spaam? I thought they were a purely Fleftic MC."

"Yeah, I don't know too," Tonya Heaton replied. As she continued looking at the dust trail left behind by the motorcycle gang. "And I might be imagining things but I thought I just saw myself riding with those guys."

"What? You thinking of becoming a biker chick now, Tonya?" Miriam asked teasingly.

"No, not like that. What I meant was that I thought I saw someone who looked a lot like me riding one of those bikes with the Huns," Tonya clarified.

"Yeah, you're probably imagining things right there," Guildy said. "But yeah, you're right. What are the Huns doing here?"

"I don't know," Miriam admitted. "But I did hear something about how it was the Huns, or at least some Huns who were in Qasden watching the IBC that led that international task force to the Real Fans' hideout in T.V. City and rescued that Saint Kanye ambassador."

"Maybe the Real Fans are up to something after all," Guildy muttered.

A new night, a new nightmare
Image
Extra news brought to you by John Postman, from the state-controlled newspaper Coldfield One

Today begins a new chapter in Coldfieldian history. Just two weeks after Icy Mountains' independence, Coldfield's economy broke abruptly this afternoon. The economy, which has been in recession since 2016, has finally hit rock bottom. The root comes from the bankruptcy of large banking companies such as Davis & Smith and Bankmarket, the latter bought by Oceanstone Group, a financial institution involved in several multi-versal corruption cases. Oceanstone demonstrated little success in the country, and now the sponsor of Greenock, a League One club, has decreed technical bankruptcy. However, overproduction was also essential in the crisis; With the opening of the internal market in 2003, national products were slowly replaced by foreign companies, such as Ribeiro-Arruda, a Brazilian vehicle factory. Between 2010 and 2015, a huge number of domestic companies went bankrupt or were privatized, such as Bankmarket, a former state bank which went bankrupt a few weeks ago and now is part of the depraved Oceanstone. To avoid a domino effect, King Edmund Meyer announced today that he would inject billions of crowns into the banking market and national companies.

And that's not enough. Videos, audios, and documents revealed by the leader of the Communist Party of the Icy Mountains showed to the public a huge scheme of corruption involving the royal family. The two terabytes of evidence reveal that the king and the royal family are involved with the Organization (the ORG), founded in the 1970s on Earth as a protection network among certain capitalist institutions and some billionaires operating a large army particular. The protection network quickly expanded into illegal markets such as human trafficking, drug trafficking, arms trafficking, prostitution, pornography, human organ trafficking, and multi-versal smuggling. The royal family joined the organization in 2005, led by the current king Edmund. According to the proof, Edmund "did not trust the army or the police because of the Liberal Reform, which displeased a powerful minority of the population, and sought trustable protection." However, in order to obtain said protection, the king had to turn a blind eye to the actions of the Organization in Coldfield, and repressed only the greatest enemies of the protection network - the Black Pigeons (the BPs), founded with the goal of combating the Organization; The Black Pigeons are led by billionaires and companies rivals of the ORG masterminds. Such request explains why the BPs disappeared from Coldfield while the Organization remains active; A remarkable fact was the arrest (and consequent suicide) of former national team goalkeeper David Green, who has arrested during the World Cup 78 qualifiers three months ago thanks to his involvement with the Black Pigeons. He committed suicide a week after his arrest, yet certain sources suggest the crime scene was forged and that Green's gang killed him, ruling the murder as witness elimination.

"Perhaps this will kill the zombies inhabiting the mind of every Coldfieldian, making them see who they are following." Said Amaranthinos, leader of the Communist Party of the Icy Mountains, opposed to the current governments of the Icy Mountains and Coldfield. Reactions of leaders from countries allied to Coldfield were immediate. South Shellfort Prime Minister Susan Rose said she was shocked by the king's involvement in the Organization and "expect it to be a bad joke." 2nd Brazilian Empire emperor Augusto Lima II immediately expressed in his Dwitter account that "it is a shame to be allied to someone like Edmund"; The Emperor also mobilized part of the army and claims to be ready for a military intervention in Coldfield - and had received support from the planet-state Scuiria, also a Coldfieldian ally. Augusto Lima is known for his explosive behavior, but he was smart enough not to impose an embargo - unlike Brazilian Empire's neighbor, the military junta of Bananistani Island, another Coldfieldian ally.

The king - currently training the national team in Mattijana for the Campionato Esportiva XX - has not spoken on the subject, as the news didn't reach Mattijana yet; Remember that we are publishing this extra news thanks to the Liberal Reform, which abolished censorship and allowed news that could negatively affect the royal family. Edmund Meyer is the best leader of Coldfield of all time, the one who took Coldfield out of the darkness of a cave and brought us near to the light of a candle.

Last Throw of the Dice, Part One

Throckmorton Bridge
Etxegarray District, Mereilles, Ceneisis

Tullio Zorzalo suddenly found himself in the unenviable position of being the manager of a football club working with a non-negotiable deadline that was rapidly coming for a club which didn't tolerate failure.

Last season, Zorzalo's attempt to win the Fleftic Ladies' Premier League with Sporting Ceneisis Women had ended as an unmitigated disaster as the star player on whom Zorzalo had pinned his hopes of winning the league, Anglatia's Allie Vacek, experienced a complete and total meltdown after a heartbreaking loss to Rosenpfelblatz City Ladies which essentially ended Ceneisis' slim chances of possibly competing for the LPL title as an outlier. Vacek was such a mercurial talent, Zorzalo had to admit; she was indeed a once-in-a-generation kind of player but the only problem with her, in Tullio's opinion, was that she was too hard to integrate into a team setup. If Zorzalo was building the team around Vacek then that was all right, but Zorzalo had inherited a mixed bag of players from the previous manager and Tullio's managerial specialty was building a team of eleven players, not a team of one big player surrounded by ten squad players. Also, it seemed as if it was Vacek and only Vacek alone who knew how to properly channel her energies and skills into playing football her own way, and after numerous attempts to get Vacek to play the team game, Zorzalo eventually struck a deal with Vacek to let her play her own style while the rest of the team played team ball. It had worked out, to an extent, but Ceneisis still lost, the aforementioned 3-2 loss against Rosen.

Sporting Ceneisis and the Vacek family parted ways after the end of the season on not-so-amicable terms after Allie's breakdown after the Rosen game. The board sold off Allie and her half-siblings to different clubs simply to wash away the name of Vacek in their records. They wanted to get rid of this "non-beneficial" association immediately, much to Zorzalo's regret. Allie and her half-sister Sive may have been unworkable, but Zorzalo saw potential in Christian Vacek Junior, and he was still open to the possibility of getting Christian back into the fold. At least that was an option open to him.

But right now what Tullio Zorzalo worried about was the fact that he still needed to bring in a few more players to complete his team. No more once-in-a-generation players like Allie Vacek; he'd experienced how tought it was to play players like her and he didn't want to go through it all over again, unless that player had the right personality and/or mentality to fit into a team. But really, what Tullio needed were squad players, players who aren't supposed to start every game but could do a good job coming from the bench or filling in for an injured player or two. Tullio had already made some good signings: a starting center back in Cosumar's Hilde Silfverberg and a young goalkeeper with high potential in Islana Lunigo's Kibby Heartstrum. Add that to a squad with the likes of Allison Torres, Samantha Leroux, Svenja Volksson, and Callisto Parra, on paper it appeared as if Ceneisis might just have a legitimate chance at winning the LPL. Then again, the Ceneisis squad with Allie Vacek was also good enough to challenge for the title on paper, but bad results in the opening six weeks basically knocked them out of contention.

For Tullio, the problem in those horrendous six weeks was the fact that Ceneisis lacked a proper hard-hitting defensive midfielder, or at least a proper hard-hitting defensive midfielder who wasn't injured for between a third and half of the season. In all honesty, Sporting Ceneisis had never seen a campaign in recent history, whether they were under Artemio Peres or Tullio Zorzalo, where their defensive midfielders lasted a whole season without suffering some sort of injury or another. And the thing was that usually, all their injury times would overlap in some way or another, meaning that on any given game day, at least two and sometimes all of Ceneisis' defensive mids were out due to injury. It wasn't a good situation to be in, to be honest.

Zorzalo was in the office of Sporting Ceneisis' Director of Football, Roman Bellich, brother of Nikita Bellich, the Pridnestrovian oligarch who bought up the controlling stake in Sporting Ceneisis and practically turned it into his investment project in Abanhfleft. They were discussing Zorzalo's plans for the coming season. "Look, Tullio, I get that you think that you're on a timer to get results with the team but nothing could be further from the truth! My brother Nikita has realized that while winning trophies immediately boosts his standings and the standings of everyone else with the fans, sometimes we have to build for the future as well. Throwing money at the problem isn't the solution anymore."

"I understand where you're coming from, Roman, I really do," Zorzalo said. "But you probably don't understand where I'm coming from. It's easy for you people higher up to be relaxed with the whole situation because not a lot of people can come in and buy up your stake in the club, not when your brother has priced it as highly as he has now. Managers are under a lot more scrutiny than owners or directors of football. We're the face of the club along with the players. When things go right, it's all the manager's work. And when things go wrong, it's all the manager's fault. It's his fault for setting the wrong tactics; it's his fault for not buying the right players; it's his fault that the academy player to whom he gave a first start in the league couldn't handle the pressure. Lots of things are the manager's fault."

"Oh, don't be so negative, Tullio," Roman said. "That's why we're talking now, right? So that you can make the moves you want and I'll just tell you whether we want to pay the money or not. And I know that you already have some names on your mind. Come on, then, spit it out."

"All right, then," Tullio Zorzalo said. "You wanted it, and you're going to get it. The first guy I want to get is Guildenstern Cardew."

"That's an easy buy," Roman Bellich replied. "Besanza will definitely put a high price on him as he's a bright young goalkeeper prospect who's already capped on the senior level but we have the money to pay for his transfer. That's a done and dusted deal, then. Now, what about any other names you might want to bring in to Mereilles?"

"You probably liked it when you heard Guildenstern Cardew's name," Zorzalo said. "But I have a feeling that you won't be so happy once you hear the next name I'm about to give you. It's Mara Mandaric, from Bojikstan in the Independents Cup."

"Hang on a minute now, Tullio, are you serious about that?" Roman asked. "You want Mara Mandaric for Sporting Ceneisis? You do know that she just injured her knee a few days ago, yes?"

"Yes, I know that, and I also know that we have ways to accelerate the treatment of knee injuries," Zorzalo replied. "I've seen how she plays, Roman. Bojikstan may be new to the scene but they already have a number of good players. And Mandaric is just exactly the kind of player that we need to lock down that line between the midfield and the defense. She has a hard tackle to herself as well."

"Yes, and that just might be the reason why she got her knee banged up like that," Roman countered. "There's a reason why our own players get injured that way, because they always go all in with their tackles and that messes up their knees some way or another. And now you want to add another player who injures herself tackling other people to the team?"

"She doesn't need to be a starter, Roman," Zorzalo pressed on. "All we need from Mandaric is that she be around to do the job when our players are injured."

"But what do we do if she's injured and there's no one else left to fill in for her slot? Do we risk an academy player for that?"

"No, the point of this whole thing is that we will get five players who can slot into one position so that at any given time, any one of them can take that place in the starting eleven whenever injuries have taken the others out of contention. Mandaric isn't going to be starting every game for us. She's for rotation and depth."

"Tullio, can you be honest with me for a second?" Roman asked. "Why exactly are you pushing for this transfer? It's not going to be the end of the world if we do or don't sign this Mandaric girl, right?"

"No, for you, it won't be," Zorzalo replied. "Look, what I am about to tell you cannot get out of his room. At least, not until the time is right."

"Oh, I knew it," Roman muttered. "You found a new job, didn't you?"

"I haven't found a new job yet, per se," Zorzalo said, "but the SFA has approached me for the possibility of taking over the women's team now that Holly Jonasson has gone off to La Presa in Oontaz. I know that they're also taking to other people who are actually open to a job but this is a unique opportunity, Roman. For all the shit that managers get, the fans are a little bit more forgiving when it's their national team you're handling, mostly because they know that national teams don't play a lot of games. But on the other hand, there's only a small number of games in which you can get your tactics right, and even if you get the tactics right, that's no guarantee that you'll win seeing as the other teams could get their tactics right in a better way or we could just get unlucky, like those three own goals we conceded against Bongo Johnson. But it's still such an intriguing proposition, though. If no one ends up taking it, I'd be open to it...."

"So, basically what you're telling me is that you want to sign this Mandaric girl is because you want to win the title with Ceneisis before you possibly go for the women's national team job," Roman repeated. "Can you explain to me just how exactly these elements fit together because I just don't get it."

"Remember how last time I said that Allie Vacek was the missing piece of the puzzle to our team?" Zorzalo asked. Roman nodded his head reluctantly. For him, it was a part of the team's history which he would very much rather forget than remember. "Well, then, I looked at how our team performed over the last season and I determined that the missing piece that we were lacking wasn't an instinctual goalscorer like Vacek," Zorzalo continued. "What we really lacked were enough experienced defensive midfielders. Matchday one, we lost Sam Macacalicasan for six weeks due to injury. Matchday two, Erin Brankowitz twanged her hamstring so we lost her for a whole month. Matchday three and it was Demi Sedlayeva's turn to get injured. Three injuries to three defensive midfielders in the first three weeks of the previous season. That's the real reason why we lost, because we lost three important players in three consecutive weeks, not because we couldn't integrate one player properly. All three of those players are good on their day but the problem always remains with the possibility that they will get injured. We need one more player to cover for them. And I sincerely believe that Mara Mandaric could very well be that player. This is possibly my last chance to win the title with Sporting Ceneisis, Roman. Mara Mandaric is my final gamble, my last toss of the dice. And I believe that once I have her in my team, I can bring the Ladies' Premier League trophy here to Mereilles. You can either give me the money for her now or you can wait to bring the title home for a few more years."

"You drive a hard bargain, Tullio," Roman Bellich finally said after a few moments' contemplation. "Nikita sure as hell isn't going to like this. But all right, I'll tell him, and we will both judge how sound your decision has been at the end of the season."

CAMPIONATO ESPORTIVA XX: REPUBLIC OF KABOOMLANDIA VS FHULGHAMOUS PENINSULA

WESTSTRAND, MATTIJANA - The Fhulghamous Peninsula started off their latest Campionato Esportiva campaign with a draw against the Republic of Kaboomlandia.

Frederik Backstrom sidefooted the Republicans into the lead with barely twenty minutes played into the game and then Tor Akelund doubled the Republicans' advantage with a minute to play before the half-hour before they locked down on defense to keep the clean sheet for the rest of the first half.

Brendan Meeks then gave the Fhulghamous a way back into the game when his curling attempt from outside the box beat the keeper with a looping flight seemingly away from the far post before sneaking back in.

The Fhulghamous battled long and hard to score their equalizer and eventually, in the first minute of added time at the end of the second half, Salvatore Pelucci headed home Meeks' cross to complete the Colonist comeback.

Fhulghamous Peninsula manager Orestes Katsouranis Jr.: "It was a rough game, there's no denying that. I'm actually surprised that nobody got fouled after all those shoves and pushes, but then again it felt as if none of the fouls were being called at all. But the fightback was good. I feel that this was a well-deserved point. The Republicans would probably feel quite a bit aggrieved, though; we practically stole a point from under their noses! They controlled us well throughout the game, and only rare breakdowns in the second half allowed us to get back into the game. But that's why we deserve the point, because we grabbed the opportunities presented to us."
