TIGERS ROUNDTABLE: WBC40 PREDICTIONS, PART III


With five teams already punching their teams to the quarterfinals, we're getting a clearer picture of what we're going to see in the next round. But what about the one after that, and the one after that? Our panelists have done a great job nailing all five quarterfinalists, but who do they think will be lifting the trophy at the end of this WBC? Let's see what they have to say.

Our Panelists:
Megan Peterson, a former Tigers center-fielder and Ruby Falls Thunder star.
Alex Cameron, former Llamanean baseball star and current manager of Hicaña.
Erik Lundqvist, Arondic starting pitcher and ace of the New Llama Wizards.

QUARTERFINALS

#1 Schiltzberg (1) vs #9 Cassadaigua (23)

Peterson: Cassadaigua have been very impressive so far, but Schiltzberg is Schiltzberg. Expect the host nation to put up a fight, but the four-time champions are just too talented to get knocked out in the quarterfinals. Schiltzberg in 4.

Cameron: I agree that Cassadaigua will put up a huge fight as they try to make a deep playoffs run in their home country. But they're more talented than you're giving them credit for. I think this will be a very close series, and Schiltzberg will be pushed to their limits. I think the winner of this series, no matter who it is, will make the finals. But in the end, it'll be Schiltzberg. Schiltzberg in 5.

Lundqvist: Since you two have both said Schiltzberg already, I'll take the underdog. The host nation historically has a pretty strong record, and Cassadaigua aren't just any mid-20s-ranked nation looking to make their first deep run at home, they're a former champion. Cassadaigua in 5, but like you said, it'll be close.

Consensus: Schiltzberg advances.

#2 Newmanistan (10) vs #10 Tenburg (UR)

Peterson: To be honest, I've been blown away by what unranked Tenburg has done this Classic. While we did call the upset over Frenline Delpha, I still couldn't believe they did it in four games. But Newmanistan are just so good. They're serious championship contenders this time around, and their seed and group-stage performance reflects that. If former champions Zwangzug didn't stand a chance, what can Tenburg do? I think this will be a closer series than the Rockets expect. But they're too good to go out this early to this team. Newmanistan in 4.

Cameron: Totally agreed. Tenburg are a very good team who got out of a tough group with the second-best record of all second-place teams. I think they can keep making some noise, and what better way to do that than by taking the defending champions to five games? It's something the Metros are absolutely capable of. Unfortunately, it's the best-case scenario. But I wouldn't be surprised to see Tenburg in the semifinals next Classic. Newmanistan in 5.

Lundqvist: I definitely saw Tenburg beating Frenline Delpha easily, but Newmanistan is another step up from an Anacondas team that didn't look its best. Newmanistan has the pitching to shut down the Metros' dangerous offense, and the attack to punish them for not taking advantage of their opportunities. This won't be a close series. The Rockets will take the gentleman's sweep, and do so effortlessly. Newmanistan in 4.

Consensus: Newmanistan advances.

#3 Super-Llamaland (4) vs #6 Nova Anglicana (2)

Peterson: The rivalry just keeps on growing. The two teams haven't met since WBC36, but there's a reason they have one of the most celebrated rivalries in international baseball. The Tigers are 8-9 against their rivals, and the Lions took the most recent meeting between the two teams, also a quarterfinal, in five games. But they haven't looked that sharp this Classic, slipping to the sixth seed, and I think the Tigers are just the hotter team right now. Super-Llamaland in 5.

Cameron: I think Llamanean fans need to keep in mind that this is the world's second-best team. And that's a mantle they've earned with seasons of consistent performance. Nova Anglicana may not have the greatest record in the WBC knockout round, but they never wilt under pressure. Frankly, it's a coin flip. Nova Anglicana in 5.

Lundqvist: Agreed with both of you. This will be a very close series, and it'll come down to who can not only out-think, but out-execute the other team. Frankly, this is the best Tigers team I've seen in a long time, even better than WBC37. It's about time we evened the all-time series against our rivals. But it'll be very difficult. Super-Llamaland in 5.

Consensus: Super-Llamaland advances.

#4 West Phoenicia (8) vs #12 West Saintland (11)

Peterson: This is an interesting series, to say the least. Although West Phoenicia was the superior team by four games, the two had roughly equal runs-scored and runs-allowed amounts, and West Saintland came out of the stronger group. This will be a very tight matchup between two teams with less quarterfinals experience than you'd expect. But West Phoenicia have shown that they're the better team under pressure in Classics past, and I think they'll cement their status as a world-class team with another trip to the semifinals. West Phoenicia in 4.

Cameron: I don't know if it's their bullpen, awful luck, or just an inability to perform under pressure, but West Saintland have not done well in close games, and that's a main reason they're "only" 18-12. If it's the first or the last reason, I think West Phoenicia will easily move on. But, from what I've seen of this very talented Sanctii team, it's the second one. I think West Phoenicia will be the ones getting upset this time. West Saintland in 5.

Lundqvist: Again, no matter who wins, this will be a very, very close series. One of the better Sanctii teams in recent history up against a West Phoenicia side similar to the one that shocked the world with a semifinals run?

SEMIFINALS

#1 Schiltzberg (1) vs. #12 West Saintland (11)

Peterson: Don't get me wrong, West Saintland are a great team. But they're not ready to take on Schiltzberg. This won't be a very close series, and it still won't be in future Classics unless the three Princesses can get themselves a better supporting cast. Schiltzberg will make their first appearance in the finals since WBC37. But I think the finals will turn out differently this time...Schiltzberg in 4.

Cameron: I think West Saintland have a little more fight in them than that. This is still a top-ten team who had a very solid showing in the group stage, and if they've made it to the semifinals, they'll obviously be in great form. But Schiltzberg will definitely win this series. Schiltzberg in 5.

Lundqvist: Not sure if I agree with you, Alex. Obviously if they do make it this far, then yes, they'll be in great form. But a great West Saintland team still won't go neck and neck with arguably the best team in the world and a four-time champion. Schiltzberg will be hungry to get back to the finals after two Classics of upsets. This is the Classic they do that. Schiltzberg in 4.

Consensus: Schiltzberg advances to the finals.

#2 Newmanistan (10) vs #3 Super-Llamaland (4)

Peterson: If you thought Tigers-Lions was a matchup for the ages, wait until you see Tigers-Rockets. The two teams only met at WBC38, when a confident Llamanean side was just too much for a returning Rockets team to handle. But now, with Newmanistan at full strength? Things will be very, very close. I think whoever wins games one and four, in a five-game series, will gain a major advantage. Super-Llamaland will send Justin Zheng, the second-best pitcher in the world, to the mound in those games. Unfortunately for Laurent Mårtensson, the only better pitcher is Courtney Duvall. Rockets in five, unfortunately. Newmanistan in 5.

Cameron: I agree with you. This could be an even better matchup than the final, and there's no way this goes to anything but the full five games with both teams playing the way they have. To re-establish themselves as a perennial championship contender, both teams really need this series. Once again, it's a coin flip. But with the way the Tigers' defense has looked so far, allowing just eight runs to Abanhfleft in the entire series? Tigers in five. Super-Llamaland in 5.

Lundqvist: Honestly, I'm flipping a coin. Two of the best three teams facing off in an extremely hyped series. I wish the semis were best-of-seven so we could see more of these games. I expect world-class pitching from both sides and world-class hitting from both sides. This will be a series for the ages. Super-Llamaland in 5.

Consensus: Super-Llamaland advances.

Equally as good? Or equally as bad?


The West Phoenician Confederates plan for a smooth path to the Quarter-finals has been dampered by the nation of Maklohi Vai. With both sides either playing really good, or bad sides playing equally as bad.

Maklohi Vai too the lead in game 3 after defeating the Confederates 3-4. However West Phoenicia struck back in game 4 to pull off an impressive game of 7-3.
With both teams winning two games each, they both head into game 5, the game that will decide the fate of both teams.

West Phoenicia is hoping for a win on game 5 so they can progress. After a great result from World Baseball Classic #39 and winning gold at the Aeropag Summer Olympic Games for baseball game the Confederates wish to move forward not backwards.

Confederate coach Mary Zomdonia is also hoping the Confederates smash Maklohi Vai and end up in the finals. Ms Zomdonia has confirmed she will not be coaching the Confederates after this season, she has accepted a role within the West Phoenician Baseball Association. So she wants her team and legacy to end on a high point.

Mary Zomdonia has been an outstanding coach pushing The Confederates to new heights. She has brought them from last place in the world baseball classic to the semi finals and helping to push them into the top 10 rank as well as success at the Aeropag Summer Olympic Games which she plans on replicating with the upcoming Olympics.

In other baseball news Short Stop Patrick Vegan has announced his retirement. He will play out the #40 season and the Olympics, before focusing on his Organic food business.

West Phoenicia is poised to declare declaration of war on Hoosier Alliance rebels after failed assassination attempt on King Glenton Gryphon-Bush II Philometar.

• Head Cheerleader of the West Phoenician Confederates Laura Towers has sparked controversy by saying baseball has no room for female players.. A girls place in behind her pom-poms not behind a bat. Laura Towers called on Cassadaigua to change their equality laws and give men the right to play baseball and for women to know their place in the game.

• A small radical group has pushed the West Phoenician Government to recognise indigenous communities who were first nation. The Nationalist Party, Antebellum Party and the Aristocracy Party have come out stating "There was no indigenous people. It has always been West Phoenicians, and will vote down any proposal.

• New diamond discovery in Upper West Phoenicia has big booms plans for diamond industry.

• Science genetics group say they are 2 years away from cloning and reintroduction of the West Phoenician Dodo.

Prime Minister Poenius Announces Review of Blocked Web Sites

(SP) In light of the recent revelation that the Wakita Enquirer, a major news source in Maklohi Vai, remains blocked due to a decision made in the King Paulus XV era, Prime Minister Sara Poenius has ordered an official review of all blocked web sites to ensure that the blocklist still reflects the feminist values upon which our Kingdom was built. As it turns out, many web sites appear to have been blocked that shouldn't have been blocked and quite a few sites, such as VirtueTube where rebel-tied Internet provocateur Sister Polus regularly spews filth, have not been blocked yet. Feministvs Invicte leader Iulietta Volusenus has criticized the situation as "further evidence of the incompetence and fecklessness of Feministvs Sanctvsterra". "Today, I am announcing a full review of all blocked web sites in light of the ongoing scandal. As of this moment, the Censorship Ministry is hard at work compiling a new blocklist which will ensure that bigoted and/or hateful speech cannot be accessed on the Internet and radicalize our youth. Furthermore, the King's Government will ensure that rebel propaganda is shut down and will continue working to identify agents of the criminal elements that occupy the eastern half of our Kingdom. The truth of the situation came to light recently when a male student at a Church of Saintland school in St. Petrus was caught watching a Sister Polus's Thoughts video on a school computer. School authorities took immediate disciplinary action against the student, who has since apologized and is current doing penance for his grave sins. Per Church teachings, it is essential to the health of our souls and our relationship with the Virgin Savior that we avoid exposing ourselves to the views of heretics who deny the Resurrection of the Virgin and the Feminine Nature of the Goddess. Sister Polus is the aunt of former Prime Minister Censorina Polus. She is a war criminal who collaborated with Reino Kulseth and Anti-Patriarch Nicolaus in a plot to take over the multiverse on behalf of an evil heresy which claims that the Virgin had a son, who is the savior, and that Goddess is actually male. These heretics, who deny the Sacred Feminine, instead subscribe to an evil ideology that seeks the subjugation of the superior sex to the inferior sex. If you or somebody you know has fallen under the spell of a heretic, see your local parish priestess immediately. The fate of your eternal soul could be at stake!

As bad as allowing heresy and misogyny to circulate on the Internet is, there was a further revelation of just how outdated our blocklist is recently when a student at another Church of Saintland school was unable to access educational resources related to biological science. Biological science is a form of science that is especially hated by certain heretical groups, which denounce it as contradictory to their counterfeit version of the Holy Scriptures, which contains a story about a talking snake who gave an apple to a woman, who ate it even though the male god had forbidden it. This story, in the view of the heretics, justifies the subjugation of women. Needless to say, it is completely false and was fabricated as part of the misogynistic plot to destroy true religion and replace it with a counterfeit version that exalts the masculine instead of the feminine. In all likelihood, they only invented these bogus stories to justify the brutal oppression of women that was essential to suppress knowledge of the Truth about the Word of the Goddess and Her Divine Plan for our lives. But, now the Truth has defeated their lies and it is time to take the necessary steps to ensure the future existence of feminist democracy. The SP strongly endorses this action by our Prime Minister.

An Interview with RF Jack Lynch

As Tenburg shocked the baseball world once again by downing former WBC champion Frenline Delpha in four games, it seemed that the only people who weren't surprised were the players themselves. In particular, RF Jack Lynch has been the mouthpiece of a team which is tired of being, as they believe, grossly underrated again and again. Since they had a previously unscheduled day off, I gained an opportunity to sit down with the current hits leader of the Tennish NBL, and ask him what he thought of the whole experience.

JC: So I wonder, Jack, there's been a lot more buzz around your team now that you've knocked out a former world champion, in rather impressive fashion I might add...

JL: Thank you.

JC: Of course, but the question is, why do you think it's taken this long for your team to be recognized as a power in this Classic?

JL: Well, obviously, it starts with the fact that this is our first year, and we came in unranked, and that's understandable, but that was a long way back at this point. No one
thought we would qualify for the playoffs and yet we did. No one thought we would beat Delpha and yet we did. And now, no one thinks we're gonna beat Newmanistan either.

JC: And yet... you think you will?

JL: I think we can. Anything can happen in playoff baseball. Newmanistan is a tough team, they've played some fantastic ball to this point, but I also think people will be surprised, again, at what we can do.

JC: So let's say you beat Newmanistan. Do you think the team will finally get the respect it deserves?

JL: Well there are some folks that take us seriously enough now. There's some folks in Llamaland who give the credit I think we deserve at this point, but most, I think, and that includes some back home, seem to think that this is some sort of fluke, and... (laughing) Christ, do they have something else coming. Whether we beat Newmanistan or not, we'll be back next time around, and we're gonna sew even more chaos.

JC: So, looking at the playoff picture as it stands now, who is the one team you really don't want to face right now?

JL: Schiltzberg for sure; if we played them right now they'd blast us... we'd be [expletive] plastered all over the outfield wall trying to catch homers. Everyone on that team contributes on a high level, and they'll crush you for mistakes. They get in a pitcher's head like no one else, and once they do that it's a bloody congo line. Just unstoppable. I personally see them winning it all.

JC: Even if you were the ones meeting them in the final?

JL: Absolutely. We might take them to 6, but I don't see us going any further than that.

JC: Let's talk about Tenburg. Baseball has been sort of a cult sport up until this point. Football, gridiron, hockey, and of course racing, all very popular... but baseball has hit like a tidal wave during this classic. What do you think happens when we're done here?

JL: Baseball is here to stay, certainly.

JC: And what do you think to that atmosphere around the game?

JL: (Laughs) Well, I hope it stays this crazy; I loved it. The folks brought the noise every home game, they really did. And just... ah, its was so wild. Booze in the dugout and all that, and we've caught flak for it, but those people are just salty they couldn't get away with it if they wanted to.

JC: What if they did.

JL: They game would be a lot funnier. If Tenburg ever hosts, I hope they encourage the players to drink. Hey, some guys, it helps them get loose, helps put your mind at ease. When you're loose and calm, you can be dangerous.

JC: But there are many who find it repulsive. What do you say to them?

JL: [expletive] them.

(We both had a laugh)

JC: Okay, so last one: What's been the best part of this Classic so far?

JL: Watching Rory toss that no-no was fantastic. That whole leg was amazing, but Rory throwing like he did that day... that was something else. I was over the moon on that one. We all were. That, and the last game against Hicana, for all the marbles. That's the night I knew that baseball was gonna become a staple in Tenburg, and part of me can't wait for us to go home and play NBL baseball for them... just play to that kind of crowd every game for the rest of my career.

JC: Something tells me we can't wait for you to come home either. Thanks so much, Jack.

JL: Thank you, Jenny.

THE ROCKET REPORT

OLD TIMER DISPATCHED, NEWCOMER AWAITS

It was not an easy series against the Zebras from Zwangzug, but the Rockets were able to eliminate the longest-tenured active nation in the World Baseball Classic right now, and their award for that will be nation participating in their first Classic. Courtney Duvall tossed another gem in the first game of the series, making her 7-0, with still a 1.00 ERA since the Zebras held true to that form and scored just the one run. It would come in the ninth, preventing Duvall from potentially picking up yet another complete game shutout. Still, she has thrown 63 innings in the seven games, and allowed just the seven runs. Jennifer Hughes followed that up with an excellent start in the second games of the series, and a four-RBI game from Kayla put the Rockets up 2-0 in the series. However, the Zebras are too good of a team to be swept, and it was not a surprise for them to show their character, as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third game. The Rockets nearly clawed their way back, but fell by a run.

The fourth game of the series was close until the sixth inning. A three-run double off the bat of Stephanie Reynolds in the fourth gave the Rockets a 4-2 lead. Two innings later, the Rockets exploded. The inning started innocently, with a one-out bloop single from Hannah Bates. Bates would steal second, but it would not really matter as Lexi Alcorn would draw a walk. Then, as they love to do, the Rockets effectively pulled off the double steal, then a sacrifice fly by Brittany Morgan made it 5-2. Then came the big blows. Mallory Harris connected on a hanging curveball and sent it into the left field seats to make 7-2. Rachel Carey and Stephanie Reynolds would hit consecutive singles, and a Michelle Covington double would drive them in to make it 9-2. Hannah Kent would then connect for a long ball of her own, and just like that, the Rockets were 11-2, with the seven run inning. They would hold on to win 12-3, and return to the quarterfinals, something that they missed for the first time ever in the last classic.

The opponent is the quarterfinals, is Tenburg. In their first Classic, Tenburg has accomplished quite a bit. Finishing second in what was a pretty good group was a nice accomplishment for the Metros, and baseball fever has swept through the country. Reports had them a little more interested in the World Bowl at one time, but the passion of seeing their nation compete at this level has turned their fanbase into rabid baseball fans, at least right now. It’s a complete 360 to go from playing a nation like Zwangzug, a storied nation, who WE played in OUR first World Baseball Classic, making it to the final of World Baseball Classic 7 before they came out on top. No nation currently active in the Classic has been doing this as long as Zwangzug has. We go from that, to playing a nation in their first Classic. Every Classic, there are new nations that participate, and we always hope that at least one of them “sticks”. When we hosted World Baseball Classic 38, that nation was Scootalove City. There were a couple first time nations that had a good campaign in qualifying, but none show the promise of Tenburg. Everyone has to start somewhere, and they proved this year that new nations can have success, but it takes commitment. They showed it.

Unfortunately for the Metros, their next opponent is our Rockets. We are on a mission to win our fifth title in our third Classic since returning to this competition, and this has been a successful campaign by every stretch of the imagination. After failing to make the quarterfinals for the first time in our history, the Rockets have come out with a vengeance and have gotten outstanding pitching, and more then just from Courtney Duvall, and excellent hitting. They are looking like the Rockets of old, and there are quite a few fans out there who are starting to think more and more of four-timer showdown for number five between us and Schiltzberg. Simply advancing to the quarterfinals this year would be a disappointment, and the team knows that. There is no way that Tenburg is going to sneak up on this team.

The Rockets will go right to Courtney Duvall for the first game of the series, with the potential of introducing the Metros to that traditionally dominant Newmanistan pitching. Duvall was asked about her next opponent, and responded as such, “You’re only as good as your next game. They have nothing to lose. It’s kinda like us in (World Baseball Classic) 38. They’ve exceeded expectations at this point, and now you are just having fun, drinking it up, and seeing how far you can go. That can be dangerous, so neither I nor any one here is going to think about them as anything other then the best team in the world, because in the next series, they are the only team that matters to us.”

CASSADAIGAN SECURITY SHUTS DOWN N.O.M. RALLY

As mentioned in the previous issue of the New Schiltzbierg Times Sports News, prior to game three of the Schiltzberg-Free Republics, the Free Republics meninist group National Organization for Men (NOM) released plans to start a rally prior to the game outside the stadium in Brattleboro, Cassadaigua, protesting the mistreatment of men in Cassadaigua. For many reasons, this was not a wise idea, and for the specific reasons as to why this was a bad idea, see the previous issue of the Times. Anyway, the idea for the rally was very frighteningly dangerous, and the plans had to be shutdown for the safety of the protestors, the innocent civilians in the immediate area, and the reputation of the World Baseball Classic.

In an effort to draw out more participants for the rally, NOM released its plans for the rally on social media. Unfortunately for them, this made their plans really easy to be intercepted by the people that wanted to shut down the rally. The Schiltzbergian government found out about the plans, and realized that the majority of the people that would be in harms way would be Schiltzbergers, and they realized that they had to shut this down. They secretly notified the Cassadaigan WBC security team about the plans of the rally, and they asked for their intervention, only to find out that the security already knew about the plans for the rally and were already planning on breaking it up. The Schiltzbergian government was very happy to hear this news, as they realized that they were on the same page with the hosts.

The morning before the rally was planned, the Cassadaigan WBC security team released a statement saying that in the case that any rally or riot of any sort should happen during the World Baseball Classic, they would not hesitate to take action to minimize any danger to the players and fans involved in the games. Though the NOM plans were not directly mentioned, it seemed obvious that they were the ones that the security team was warning.

The warnings from the security committee discouraged many of the people who had planned to attend the rally, and there ended up being much less turnout than NOM had hoped for. When the time came for the rally, only about 150 people showed up, and the rally only lasted about five minutes before the WBC security, which was on high alert for the Schiltzberg-Free Republics game three, broke it up. The security team spoke from megaphones to the protestors, warning them that if they did not stop protesting, they would be considered security threats and would be arrested. This scared the majority of the people into calming down, but twelve protestors were arrested for refusing to stop. These twelve protestors were all released without criminal charges after the game was over.

Even though the riot was broken up, the point of meninism did get across to the general public. The fact that this cause was so important that 150 people showed up to protest it even after being warned not to was strong, and the fact that 12 would be arrested for the sake of the cause was even stronger. Though this particular newspaper will refrain from glorifying the actions of these protestors, words such as "heroes" have been used to describe the twelve who were arrested. While they were fighting for a noble cause, hopefully no more such protests will happen during this WBC.

It was just another broadcast for a few fans. For many, of course, it was a particularly disappointing one. Despite the odds, the Zebras' success against Newmanistan in the group state had given the faithful hopes that they could pull it off again in a short series, and elimination always stung.

When it was all over, Isaac sought a meeting with Wainwright back at the Ziggurat. Wainwright was a little bit wary of being lured into a trap once again, but then again, he was already out of office, and he'd made it out of Grande Mountain and back. What more could they do to him?

"So you did it," Isaac said. "Finished off the broadcast. Again."

"This time I actually meant it," Wainwright smiled.

"Still counts. Not just almost the whole classic, from our perspective. The whole thing."

"Is this going somewhere?"

"Look up."

Wainwright did, taking in the familiar view. Seven black stories, each smaller than the last, then the eighth little room of glass, its north wall recently repaired after the resistance and spies' unexpected interruption by Percy and Javi months before. "I know it well."

"Above that. The platform."

Squinting, he could just barely make out the radio platform that threw off the symmetry of the monumental building. "That's how you secretly got me to broadcast the last tournament, isn't it? You attenuated it to stream from 1450, the Zebras' station."

"It wasn't hard. Someone had already set it up for that to be the default."

Wainwright fixed him with the forthrightness he'd used every game of the tournament. "You know I told the truth down below the city. Believe me now; that wasn't me."

Isaac took a step back. "I...do. Then...that was your predecessor, right? Ember Nickel, the Vox. The first baseball broadcaster."

"I suppose so. Eventually the government must have decided that simultaneously being the head of state and national team broadcaster was the kind of thing that less mature countries did and WTB set up somewhere else. That platform was left forgotten until you found it during your rebellion."

"Nickel was too ashamed, too afraid to go back to work. But...you know what's happened to the announcer's job since, right?"

Wainwright shrugged. "Hopefully actual baseball fans take it over."

"Nobody has completed two WBCs in a row for the Zebras. Nobody. Ever. Until just now."

"Probably a coincidence."

"That's what all the stats people say. I'm not so sure."

"Isaac Salmier? As superstitious as all that?"

"It took a Composite Minister to start this tradition, a terrible tradition that's been with us from the beginning. I should have known it would take a Composite Minister to break it."

"But for all that shame, for all that resignation and hiding from view, do you know what Nickel did?"

Wainwright glanced around. "There's not much."

"Named the Zebras. Every country has a national animal, but not all of them name their national team after it. Look at the Rockets, the Things, the Dagans. But Nickel decided that no, the alliteration, the black-and-white starkness--that mattered, that would be part of our baseball team's legacy. And ever since then, it has been. That counts. That counts for a lot."

"So now what?" said Wainwright. "This doesn't change anything. I don't know if I want to come back. Maybe my replacement won't be very competent either and won't be rehired. Maybe we'll retreat into isolation again and there's no guarantee the Zebras will return for a while, if ever. Just because I technically broadcast for two tournaments doesn't mean someone will necessarily do it in the future."

"That doesn't matter," said Isaac. "The curse is over. We're free."

A famous ad makes a re-run on Maklohi Vai's cable TV networks:

The ad brought attention to an already interesting swing race in the suburbs of Maklohi Vai's fourth largest island. As Moko soaked up the press, he brought more voters to his side, and helped put the socialist 'Urmakai party over the top in his constituency. For those unfamiliar with the Vaian system, a brief description follows.




The National Assembly is composed of 185 members, elected in mixed-member proportional fashion in each district. Each of the six districts is broken down into 20 equally populous constituencies, ensuring that the geographical seats (120) will outnumber the list seats (65). There are 10 list seats for each district as a whole, 4 list seats for the entire country, and 1 list seat for Vaians living abroad.

This results in a system with a few strong national parties and many smaller regional parties.

The districts, in brief, have the following characteristics:
North Island: decent rural population which is generally more conservative. Its cities such as Tamolaki, Rutupo'a, and Lowanaki are largely industrial, providing strong bastions of left-wing politics.
Kolo Lahi and suburbs: Heavily middle class in and around the city, but also with most of the country's wealthy.
South Island: Wakita is middle class and well educated, as are Polina'a and Kupali. The other portions of the main island, as well as the twin islands, are less well educated and slightly less well off, but not rural. The twin islands are slightly more traditional in outlook.
Central: Urmakani and Litomuti are popular cities to move to, and have an ecological bent owing in part to the nearby national park. Uwalamo and Alonamo are port cities with strong labor, whereas Nipai, Rimoloi, and the smaller cities don't have a strong industrial presence.
Totai: Large, charmingly chaotic, and solidly social liberal.
Southeast: The western shore is mostly middle class, mid-sized cities with little indigenous industry that work well with the service economy. The eastern shore is more isolated and traditional, but also has environmentalists.

POSTSEASON UPDATE FOR WBC 40

Now through with the round of sixteen, the World Baseball Classic is really getting down into the heart of the playoffs, as the eight remaining teams will square off against one another in the quarterfinals, where the best teams in each series will advance to the final four, where they will be immortalized in WBC history. In this issue of the New Schiltzbierg Times Sports News, we will review the round of sixteen and then delve into the remaining series and update our predictions.

Round of Sixteen

#1 Schiltzberg (1) vs. #16 Free Republics (22)
Prediction: Schiltzberg
Result: Schiltzberg
There is no surprise here. Free Republics is a good team, but when it comes down to it, every team that has made it to this point is good, and Schiltzberg is simply the better team. It was a 1 vs. 16 seed match up, and it was no major surprise.

#2 Newmanistan (10) vs. #15 Zwangzug (35)
Prediction: Newmanistan
Result: Newmanistan
Zwangzug has shown a lot of prospect as a team, now two years into their return, but they simply are not yet ready to compete at this level and at this stage in the game. Newmanistan on the other hand has completely rebuilt its franchise, and they are once again WBC superpowers, and they were able to power through this one, defeating their old rival. Expect Zwangzug to continue to improve in future seasons, but the Rockets definitely outplayed them this time around.

Abanhfleft has been around the Classic for a while now, but they simply were no match for the Llamean squad. The Tigers propelled through this series, winning it by sweep, and they likely will continue to do well as the tournament progresses.

#4 West Phoencia (8) vs. #13 Maklohi Vai (13)
Prediction: West Phoencia
Result: West Phoencia
This was a close series, as we expected, but our prediction of the result still came true. As we predicted, the up and coming West Phoencian team would rise to the occasion and topple the waning Maklohi Vaian team. The West Phoencian team made it to the final four last season, and they are looking good right now. We expect them to make another semifinals appearance this time around.

#5 Ethane (3) vs. #12 West Saintland (11)
Prediction: Ethane
Result: West Saintland
This is actually not as much of an upset as one would think. Sure, Ethane is (ahem, was) the defending champion, but West Saintland is also a powerful team and Ethane's team has been lacking this season to say the least. We all expected them to at least make it to the quarterfinals, but I suppose even we underestimated the incompetence of the Ethanian team this season.

#6 Nova Anglicana (2) vs. #11 Scootalove City (21)
Prediction: Nova Anglicana
Result: Scootalove City!!!!
It wasn't what we predicted, but oh my God, the underdog prevails! In the midst of all of these dominant teams having success, this season really needed a Cinderella story, and now they've got one.

#7 Frenline Delpha (5) vs. #10 Tenburg (UR)
Prediction: Frenline Delpha
Result: Tenburg
This was the first upset of the Classic, and well earned by the Tenburg team. They have looked good all year and they have done well for a first time team, especially to knock out a former WBC champion team like Frenline Delpha. Unfortunately for them, the odds of them keeping this up are slim, as the teams that they will be up against will be even more difficult than what they have played thus far. They have put up a great season, but further advancement for them would not be likely at this point.

#8 Darmen (31) vs. #9 Cassadaigua (23)
Prediction: Cassadaigua
Result: Cassadaigua
As we predicted, the Cassadaigans would get a boost from the home crowd and would be able to overcome fellow WBC champion Darmen in what was truly a great series. Cassadaigua has had a great year, but going up against Schiltzberg in the quarterfinals, it will be an uphill battle for a fourth championship for the host nation this time around.

Quarterfinals

#1 Schiltzberg (1) vs. #9 Cassadaigua (23)
Prediction: Schiltzberg
This is going to be a great match up between two teams that combine for a whopping seven WBC titles. With this series featuring the number one nation in the world and the host country going at it in a rematch baseball duel of the WBC 39 quarterfinals match up, there is no doubt that this series will experience the highest attendance numbers in the ballpark and the most views on television. This will make for a great match up, but ultimately, you can’t deny the power of Schiltzberg. They have proven time and time again that they are capable of excelling at this level, and they hope to make their sixth straight appearance in the semifinals this season.

#2 Newmanistan (10) vs. #10 Tenburg (UR)
Prediction: Newmanistan
This is a no doubter. A Tenburg advancement here would be a total upset. Newmanistan is improving by the day, led by their ace pitcher Courtney Duvall. Tenburg has had a good season, but as an unranked, they simply stand no chance. Many who make an argument in favor of Tenburg like to say that they can make it deep into the tournament because Schiltzberg did in WBC 33. This argument is completely out of context, because the game was way different in WBC 33. Many of the old nations that had been around since the beginning (or close to the beginning), such as Qazox, Zwangzug, Milchama, and Cassadaigua had left the stage, and it was a perfect opportunity for new teams, such as Schiltzberg, to emerge and steal the spotlight. In this season, however, there are several clearly defined threats that should easily be able to eradicate any life still left in the Tenburg club. Best of luck to them in future seasons, but they will likely not do very well against four-time champion Newmanistan. Such a victory for Newmanistan would clinch them their first appearance in the final four since their historic fourth championship victory in WBC 17.

#3 Super-Llamaland (4) vs. #11 Scootalove City (21)
Prediction: Super-Llamaland
Well, this comes as a surprise to the Tigers, who were expecting the Nova Anglicana Lions, but are now faced by the much lesser threat of the Scootalove City Unicorns. Chances are, the dominant Super-Llamaland team probably would have been able to handle Nova Anglicana without much trouble, but Scootalove City should be a breeze. Nothing against the Scootalove City team, but Super-Llamaland is simply too good for them. Anything but a Llamean victory would be an upset.

#4 West Phoencia (8) vs. #12 West Saintland (11)
Prediction: West Phoencia
Both of these teams are good, but it seems like all season West Phoencia has been putting up better numbers. Neither one of these teams could be considered a major threat on the level of Super-Llamaland or Schiltzberg, but they are both good teams, and the one that advances will likely put up a fight to make it to the finals. Chances are though, the team that wins this series will ultimately be fighting for the third place title rather than the finals, since Schiltzberg will likely be looming in their branch of the semifinals.

Semifinals

#1 Schiltzberg (1) vs. #4 West Phoencia (8)
Prediction: Schiltzberg
This would be a rematch of last season's third place game, which was a Schiltzbergian sweep. This will likely have a similar result. Schiltzberg has failed in the semifinals twice in a row, but chances are, if they make it this time, they will be advancing to the finals once again. This will be an interesting series, but likely won't be that close.

#2 Newmanistan (10) vs. #3 Super-Llamaland (4)
Prediction: Super-Llamaland
This will be a close one, but unlike certain incompetent broadcasters **cough**Erik Lundqvist**cough** this esteemed newspaper will not stoop to the level of flipping a coin to predict who will advance. This would be another legendary match up between two teams that have won a lot of World Baseball Classics. They are both great teams, but we will give the edge to Super-Llamaland, because they have consistently been good for several seasons, and while Newmanistan is improving rapidly every season, they are still a bit unproven, as they haven’t made it to the semifinals in over twenty seasons. For this reason, we will have to say Super-Llamaland will advance to the finals in what would be a truly great rematch of the WBC 37 finals.

Third Place Series

#2 Newmanistan (10) vs. #4 West Phoencia (8)
Prediction: Newmanistan
West Phoencia is new, while Newmanistan is old with renewed talent as of late, but it seems like the Newmanistani team is far more developed, as they seem to have progressed to the level of being a super-threat in just three seasons. In this scenario, West Phoencia will likely have to settle for another fourth place finish, and both of these teams would rather be fighting for the title rather than third place, but that is just the nature of the third place series. Likely, both of these teams will come back even stronger next year and will prepare for an even deeper run with increased ranks.

Finals

#1 Schiltzberg (1) vs. #3 Super-Llamaland (4)
Prediction: Schiltzberg
Will Schiltzberg win a fifth title or will Super-Llamaland win a fourth? Or will this match up not even happen at all? It is too early to realistically say at this point, but we will give the edge to Schiltzberg, because… well… they are Schiltzberg. There is still a lot of baseball left to be played, so we will have to wait and see how it shapes up.

As most people have just seen and watched with great excitement, Scootalove City Unicorns have taken down the Nova Anglicana Lions.

It was a hard won game, most people got upset by the second inning when the Lions got 6 runs in one inning. But, let it be know, that Rick 'The House' King comes in at the end.

While that three run homer in the second by Dave 'The King' Haggard was nice, Rick 'The House' King came in when needed and got a grand slam in the top of the 8th. This grand slam was heard around the world, noise levels from the Scootalove City Unicorns Stadium, where the tie breaker game was being live streamed on the big Jumbotron were so loud that glass in the parking lot fractured a bit.

But, there was one last inning to get to. This lead was not one to be tossed aside.

So, what better way to secure our victory but with our best pitcher.

Amalthea Beagle.

A video has gone viral of Scootaloo, and the rest of the Scootalove City Fans, hovering in the air singing all of the Last Unicorn Song.

Currently stands at 42 million views.

9 strikes in a row. All clean strike outs.

The stadium went nuts, the air horns went off. Amalthea Beagle and Rick 'The House' King will be hailed as heroes no matter what happens when they get home.

Scootaloo and Amalthea Beagle both pied each other in the face in celebration. There picture on social media has accumulated 7.8 million shares and 19 million likes.

"That was one of the best things I have ever experienced in my life!" Said an extremely happy Scootaloo, pie still on her face.

"I am so happy for my little goof ball and my country! Let's go Unicorns! Woo!" Rainbow Dash stated.

"I am shocked, I didn't know I had it in me."Rick 'The House' King in an post game statement.

"Wooooo!" Stated Amalthea Beagle while Scootaloo was riding on her back.

Fireworks at Scootalove City Unicorns stadium and at all major cities.

This was a major achievement for them and baseball in the world. The flag of WBC Quarter Finalist will be flown tomorrow in Scootalove City Unicorns stadium.

The Scootalove City Unicorns will take on The Super-Llamaland Tigers tomorrow, a first for both teams in history.

The fight will be tough, but I think the Unicorns can take down the Tigers.

But, other then the question of who will win between Unicorns and Tigers, is how is anyone going to sleep? Most people have adrenaline in there veins and are fully awake.

Good luck to the Unicorns, and good luck to everyone awake right now to go to sleep.

THE ROCKET REPORT

IT’S OFF TO BRATTLEBORO

Following the Rockets game 4 victory over Zwangzug, and the win by Tenburg over Frenline Delpha the same day, Newmanistan and Tenburg knew that they would be going at it in the next round. What they did not know is where exactly they needed to travel to in order to play the games. As the game five results came in, the Rockets have learned that their next destination will be Brattleboro, the city that just saw Schiltzberg knock off Free Republics. There have been some upsets, and in fact if you haven’t noticed, the top four regular season first place teams and the top four regular season second place teams were the ones to advance, so it was obviously not a good thing to barely win your group. Tenburg gets a perfect ten and a seed of ten for what they have done so far, but the Rockets are looking to make that be where their story ends. Other second place winnings teams were Cassadaigua over Darmen, but really the #9 beating the #8 is never a shocker. Also, West Saintland knocked off Ethane, which is a stunner for us because in the two Classics that we have been back for, they have been a juggernaut. However, as was phrased perfectly by Megan Peterson of the Super-Llamaland Tigers Roundtable, “it’s time for the perennial upsetters to become an upsettee.” Megan was on a mission to make a statement with that prediction and she hit her target right on!

The biggest stunner, however, was Scootalove City knocking off Nova Anglicana. The Unicorns debuted in (WBC) 38, and now they are eliminating the #2-ranked team in the world. Nova Anglicana, heck, I love that team, but really, they are cursed in the playoffs. Usually, though, you expect a little better then that. Now, it would be interesting then, if Scootalove City had another upset in their plans. If they could knock off Super-Llamaland, and get that mammoth of our road to the final, it would be amazing! We have to take care of Tenburg first, but if the Unicorns could just come through, there, then we’d be the better ranked team in all three of our playoff matchups. We’d still have to then deal with Scootalove City, but I’d rather have them then Super-Llamaland.

That might be wishful thinking. The Tigers are looking very good and where the only team to complete a round of sixteen sweep. Good job, Scootalove City, but it looks like it will end here. Newmanistan vs Super-Llamaland looks like it on the horizon assuming both teams take care of the business that they are expected too. On the other side, the well oiled machine of Schiltzberg should be able to contain Cassadaigua. I think Dagan fans out here would be ok with that result. They understand the game, understand the ranks, and know that Schiltzberg is still on good form. The battle of the West’s look like they could be anyone’s game, but if West Phoenica were to win, here’s a tidbit for you: three of the four WBC 40 semifinalists would have been in the same qualifying group in WBC 38. The Confederates take care of business well, I like that team, because every time it seems like their backs are against the wall and need a win, they get the win. That’s the trademark of a champion. I would not put it past the Confederates to knock off Schiltzberg either if both advanced. That would be one heck of a series.

Interestingly, Newmanistan still has never played Schiltzberg. It seems like its getting closer and closer and could happen this year, but maybe if it doesn’t we can get some kind of exhibition series between the teams or something.

Well, enough from me, let’s here what coach Ashley Stevens has to say in a recent chat,

Henry: Good evening, Ashley. Getting ready to head out to Brattleboro, I bet.

Stevens: Yes, I have heard it’s a very modern city. Good place for baseball, cannot wait to be there.

Henry: Before we get in to the series against Tenburg, I want to ask you about the other series, particularly that Scootalove City win. Makes it interesting if they knock off Super-Llamaland, but how hard is it to not look far ahead, when you have people like me rubbing it in and mentioning it in every interview?

Stevens: Well, I still like you even when you do, Brie.

Henry: Hey, you know I gotta bring it up!

Stevens: And you know how I am going to answer that question.

Henry: Yes I do. Just go ahead and say it just as the formality.

Stevens: Sure. Right now we are only worried about the series we are in, against Tenburg.

Henry: So, let’s talk about Tenburg. First time nation. What do you think?

Stevens: We all start unranked. Heck, we were unranked not too long ago to when we came back, but we have immediately been able to find our old mojo. We did that because we never thought of ourselves as unranked, we knew who we were, and what we had done in the past. Tenburg has some swagger to them. They have a couple good pitchers on their side.

Henry: How’s the team looked in practice?

Stevens: Excellent. It may seem weird to say but right now losing in the first round last year, for the first time in our history, is a good thing. They know not to look past anyone, but have that burning hunger to redeem themselves for failing last time, and so do I.

Henry: Me too, after all, I want to cover more games this time. It ended abruptly last time!

Stevens: Well, if we make it to the semifinals, we’ll be happy to keep you busy!

Henry: We talk so much about Courtney Duvall, and rightfully so, but I wanted to ask you about Jennifer Hughes. You moved her into the #2 spot for this classic, and she did alright. But in Game 2 against the Zebras, she was really on her game.

Stevens: I feel she did a good job. Right now Courtney’s numbers are in a different zip code and on a whole special level, that you might forget what qualifies as good numbers for a pitcher. Jennifer has done that, and so have all our starters.

Henry: That’s a very good point. Also the running game has really been there. Taking the extra bases whenever possible, I haven’t seen it that good since we came back.

Stevens: Heather (Bates) and Lexi (Alcorn) have been dynamite, everything is going well right now, but we also know there are tough opponents down the road.

Henry: If you could say one thing to the Tenburg fanbase, what would it be?

Stevens: I would say, this is fun, isn’t it? Glad you came along for the ride, and there’s more fun to come.

Henry: Well, I got to get going, gotta get my flight to Brattleboro in a couple hours.

Stevens: Oh, just come with us.

Henry: Seriously?

Stevens: Sure, you’re part of our team, too. No cameras, though. But free drinks.

The West Phoenician Confederates can breathe a quick sigh of relief. After 5 games the Confederates which were neck to neck with Maklohi Vai, pulled off a win in game 5 to progress to the Quarter-finals.

The Confederates will now take on West Saintland, in a similar occurence from World Baseball Classic #39 where both teams met eachother in the round of 16 with West Phoenicia prevailing 3 games to 1.

With the same line up as before and added experience under their belts West Phoenicia is hoping for a simillar score in the Quarter-finals which will see them progress.

This time last year international media outlets betted on each of West Phoenicia's opponent only to be stunned when the Confederates pulled off a win. The Confederates play best when there back is against the wall, when they have something to play for. If they jump to far in front they get over confident and make errors that could easily have been avoided but coach Mary has slowly begun weeding out the faults in the team.

In past season they focused too much on there best players, using them at every opportunity and facing the consequences when they burned out. Former Confederate pitcher El Susana was a prime example. The Confederates relied on him for 80% of the game as he was the best they had. By the 7th innings he was drained of all energy and was pitching grapefruit.

Instead of relying on one ace, Mary Zomdonia has built up the whole pitching line up.
Cliff Samuels, Hieu Phan, Cooper Force, Mandeep Singh, David Zealish, Ross Mendez, Barry Parry, Roberto Debb
and Wolfie Kiwi are not just back ups for El Susana who was replaced this year with Jordan Pike but are now stars in their own right.
Cooper Force and Ross Mendez were especially resilent in the last 3 games keeping the opposition at bay with as few runs as possible.

While West Phoenicia is aware its the batters that score the runs, the coach has ensured the pitchers are the dominant and trained players who will stop the opposition from scoring. Any sign of tiredness is picked up immediately and a fresh pitcher sent in to stop any future issues of fatigue that could result in the opposition scoring a run.

Going into the Quarter-finals with a great team like West Saintland, it is important that West Phoenician pitchers play their part in limiting the runs while the Texas Brothers and fellow batters step out of their comfort zones and and taking chances such as stealing bases and grandslam hits when the opportunity arises.

Mary Zomdonia has predicted she hopes this will be the best season so far, and to achieve that task they need to bulldoze over West Saintland.

Jack shook his head as he watched Courtney Duvall's recent WBC highlights. "This lass can put it anywhere," he said to no one in particular as he picked up and sipped his ice cold beer. "A-ny-where." A clip popped up of a curveball which literally didn't break until the poor batter was already swinging. Jack whistled in awe. "Christ, I think I'm in love."

"I'm sure Vivian would love to hear ye say that," Dermot said as he appeared on the small deck with his teammate, a new beer in his hand.

"Vivian can't throw ninety-five like it's nothin'."

"Yea, but she'll come get you from Ryan's when you're too drunk to see."

"True enough." He took another sip of his beer as he continued watching the video. "Any word on Rory?"

"He's being him. No signs of nerves."

"He could lose a leg and if you didn't notice, ye wouldn't know."

"Aye." Dermot looked over Jack's shoulder as they looked at another highlight, showing Duvall tossing a nasty slider.

"Oooooohhh," they said in unison.

Kingdom of Saintland 14, Ethane 6

(SP) The Kingdom of Saintland advanced to the quarterfinals of the 40th World Baseball Classic with a 14 to 6 victory over defending champions Ethane in Game 5 of the Round of 16. Neither Agrippina Pituanius nor Aldrine Edwins lasted past the 5th inning as both proved to be ineffective on this night. The Sanctii victory sets up a rematch against West Phoenicia, who defeated our National Team in the Round of 16 of the last WBC. "The Goddess was with me today. What else can I say? Before I stepped into the batters box with the bases loaded, I said a quick prayer and then my prayer was answered. Then, the Goddess blessed me with two more home runs and She blessed our team with a victory and a spot in the Quarterfinals. I'm looking forward to getting another shot at the West Phoenicians, especially after those comments from Laura Towers, one of their cheerleaders, about how women 'need to know our place' in the game of baseball. Well, Laura, I get that you're a Sister Polus wannabe but let me tell you what our place in the game is: Champions. All-women teams dominated the WBC once and, Goddess-willing, will do so again." - Rhea Hispalus

Princess Olivia started off the scoring on the very first pitch of the ballgame. The young shortstop nailed Edwins's fastball and sent it rocketing straight down the right field line and off of the wall. The ball bounced off of the wall and rolled into foul territory. As Princess Olivia was not known for hitting balls deep, Ethane had their outfielders playing shallow and Abel Gibson took quite a long time to get to the ball. Princess Olivia used her sprinter's speed to quickly round the basepaths and by the time Ethane's right fielder had position of the ball, she was already halfway to third. The Sanctii captain looked to Princess Gloria in the coaches box for a signal and got the sign to go for home. By the time Gibson's throw made it to cutoff man Samuel Wood, she was already slowing down preparing to slide into home plate for an inside the park home run. Wood threw it to catcher Joe Richardson anyway on the off chance that Princess Gloria would forget to touch the plate but, as everybody in Saintland knows, that simply wasn't going to happen. After that, Edwins seemed to settle into the game for a while, getting 10 consecutive outs, including 5 strikeouts.

Meanwhile, Ethane managed to get that run right back in the bottom of the first with an Alejandro Phelps RBI double. Then, they took the lead in the bottom of the 2nd off a Rene Cortez solo shot. Following the home run, Abel Gibson doubled and advanced to third on a sac fly by Edwins. After Richardson drew a walk, Randy Perry knocked the run in to put Ethane up 3 to 1. Pituanius would proceed to walk the bases loaded before getting out of the inning by forcing Phelps to ground into a double play. Ethane led 3 to 1 and that was what the score remained after a scoreless third inning.

Natalia Longinus led off the fourth inning with a 12-pitch strikeout. Longinus kept fouling off Edwins's pitches but eventually he whiffed on a swing and went down for the first out. Then, the very next pitch got away from Edwins, hitting Princess Sophia in the kneepad. The hit by pitch seemed to wake the Sanctii batters up as they would knock Edwins out of the game in short order. An Occia Sornatius single put Princess Sophia at third then Laureola Teideius drew a walk that loaded the bases. Rhea Hispalus stepped up to the plate and watched the first 3 pitches go by for balls. Then, Edwins apparently decided she was going to take the 3-0 pitch no matter what as he released one of the worst pitches our reporters have seen in a long time. Hispalus saw a perfect opportunity and sent it flying over the upper deck and onto the streets of Brattleboro for a grand slam to put the Sanctii up 5 to 3.

The troubles for the Ethanian pitcher did not end there. Singles by Honora Galenus and Salonia Plinius put runners at first and third as Pituanius stepped up to the plate. The Sanctii pitcher laid down a perfect bunt and ended up safe at first base as Richardson held onto the ball after fielding it to prevent another run from scoring. This was all Angus Lockie needed to see as the manager walked out to the mound and brought in Eric Mitchell in relief. Unfortunately for Mitchell, he conceded a 2-RBI single to Princess Olivia as the Sanctii took a 7 to 3 lead. That would be the end of the Sanctii damage in that inning. After Longinus struck out again, Princess Sophia drew a walk to load the bases but Occia Sornatius popped up to end the inning.

However, Ethane was not done. In the bottom of the 4th, they would load the bases before grounding into a double play to end the inning. An inning later, they finally got some runs back as Abel Gibson and pinch hitter David Washington hit back to back home runs to knock Pituanius out of the game. Flora Mallius came in for the Sanctii and managed to get out of that inning. The Sanctii would tack on some much-needed insurance runs in the 7th as Hispalus hit her second homer of the game for 2 more RBIs. She would also hit a solo shot to lead off the 9th inning but that's getting ahead of the story. In the 8th inning, Longinus would add a 3-run homer to go with her 4 strikeouts on the day and pinch hitter Panthea Lafrenius would finish off the scoring for the Sanctii with a home run in the top of the 9th to make it 14 to 6. Even though it was not a save situation, Marina Martiannius came in to pitch the 9th inning and struggled a little bit, but Ethane needed 9 runs to tie the game and only scored 1, so the Sanctii were headed to a rare WBC Quarterfinals appearance.

BREAKING: ZHENG SCRATCHED FROM QUARTERFINALS START


It's been officially confirmed by Tigers manager Laurent Mårtensson that Nandaozhou ace pitcher Justin Zheng will not start tonight's quarterfinals match in Winchester, Cassadaigua. The news comes to a huge blow to a Tigers fan base that was already looking forwards to potential matchups against the likes of Newmanistan and Schiltzberg, but now will need to execute well to even make it there.

Zheng has had a history of arm issues, famously missing the 2037 season due to multiple shoulder surgeries. Although the same issues had flared up earlier this very Classic, with the pitcher missing his first start due to arm soreness. Of course, the no-hitter he threw in his very next start against Lisander put any concerns Tigers fans had over Zheng's arm to rest. However, six outings, all of which required Zheng to throw over 115 pitches, during a grueling group stage appears to have inflamed these concerns once again.

"It's a major injury, having Justin out, and hopefully he'll be ready to bounce back for Game Two," a stoic Mårtensson. "However, we have a lot of talented starting pitchers, and Axel [Florentssen, the Tigers' fifth starter] is ready to step in for him. This won't stop us from moving on to the semifinals." When asked what the manager would do if Zheng wasn't ready for game two, he replied: "If Justin isn't ready for Game Two, he won't start against the Unicorns. We need him at full strength against Newmanistan. I expect him to start games one and four of the semifinals. We'll see where things stand after that."

Laurent Mårtensson may have created contingency plans, but it's undeniable that losing the staff ace would be a fatal blow. Matthias Gilson-Engen is a rising star, but he's nowhere near ready to face off against the Courtney Duvalls or David Toupses of the world. Without the world-class pitching of Justin Zheng, the Tigers might have to wait until WBC41 to claim their record-tying fourth title. Luckily, Mårtensson expressed confidence that Zheng would be back by Game Two, or at the minimum Game One against Newmanistan or Tenburg.

Still, in the short term, the Tigers are still in a very comfortable position. They'll need to be vigilant at the risk of becoming the next Nova Anglicana, but odds are they'll be able to make it to the semifinals. And if they can get there, they have as much of a chance of winning the whole thing as anyone.

Jack watched in silence as Rory went through his arm stretches, and couldn't help but swipe a swig from his flask. He had confidence in Rory, sure; it was himself he was worried about. Perhaps he had been watching too many highlights, but something in the back of Jack's head was telling him that he'd never hit anything off Courtney Duvall. He'd never been intimidated by a pitcher before, but he was tonight.

She's not gonna shut me down, he kept telling himself. Not gonna happen.

Michael nudged him out of his own head. "You ready?"

Jack looked to him and responded very frankly. "No."

Michael put an arm around him, taking the flask from his hand and taking a swig before handing it back. "Here's my mind right now: we're here. We've got nothing to lose. If we get squashed, it's no big deal. If we win, it's only helping us. Either way, we go home heroes."

"But I'm not ready to go home yet."

"And who says we will? Mate, yer a helluva a ball player but you've always let the press get to ya. It'll add motivation sometimes, sure, but those batards make money off tearing us down. They can fuck off and ye gotta tell 'em so."

Jack knew that. He took another swig, and suddenly began thinking of Vivian. "Mike."

"Aye."

"What're the odds Vivian makes the team by the next Classic? Whaddaya think?"

Michael thought about it, shrugged and grinned. "Your wife has a mean knuckleball."

The two shared a laugh as Jack took another swig.

Rockets Crush Metros for 2-0 Series Lead

It seems the storybook is ready to close on Tenburg in its first ever World Baseball Classic.

Despite defying odds to make the playoffs as an unranked team, then defying them again to defeat former WBC champs in Frenline Delpha, the smothering pitching rotation of Newmanistan has proven far too much for the Tennish offense to handle. the opposite has proven true for the Metros' bullpen, as Newmanistan has outscored Tenburg 11-2 thus far.

In game 1, many had hoped for a bitter pitching duel between celebrated Rocket Courtney Duvall, and Tennish ace Rory Quinlan, who threw a no-hitter during the qualification series. What followed instead was a masterclass by Duvall, while Quinlan was pulled after four stressful innings. Duvall's fantastic outing was only spoiled in the top of the 9th, when RF Jack Lynch took advantage of a rare mistake and crushed a 450-ft home run into left center field. He drew some attitude from the rockets when he angrily hurled his bat to the backstop.

Game 2 went no better for the Metros, with Lynch once again providing the only score in the top of the 4th with another home run. With game 3 looming, oddly enough, there is little pressure on the Mets, who have been pulling their madness out of the sky for the entire Classic. The only hope here at home is that they don't get totally swept.

ROCKETS NOT LOOKING PAST METROS; TAKE TWO

Despite all of the comments and statements made by players about not looking past the first time nation from Tenburg to bigger and better things, there will always be some who doubt what they tell us. It’s a “let down” series, some might say. Well, after two games, anyone who did not think that the Rockets would come to play to their full potential here against a good up and coming team, were proven wrong. Newmanistan took the opener 5-1, and if you weren’t convinced by that score, they did one better in the second game, winning it 6-1.

The first game of the series was an intriguing matchup between Courtney Duvall and Tenburg’s Rory Quinlan, a pitcher who actually tossed a no-hitter in his qualifying group over the course of the regular season. Coach Stevens tells us that they were well aware of Quinlan’s effort against Elgenstad, no-hitting what looks to be a roster of high school kids. But Stevens could not care less about the average of the Elgenstad lineup, and told us, “At this level, a no-hitter is a tremendous feat. We knew what he had done in the past, so we watched that game and began nit-picking it before realizing that really, it was a case of a pitcher having a special day. He was good throughout qualifying though, and anyone who does that once is capable of doing that again. It actually pumped up a lot of our players to go against him.” In the 5-1 victory, Duvall added to her already mind-boggling numbers. Another complete game. 72 innings, 8 wins, no losses. 8 runs given up, for still, a 1.00 ERA. About the result, Courtney told us that, “Early on they were free swinging a bit. They were confused, and I was able to keep them guessing. I think they started getting a little more confidence as the game went on, but I still felt in control. The offense gave me a lead, so I could just do my thing.” Duvall made one mistake, which prevented her from tossing the shutout, with a curveball got too much of the plate in the ninth inning. Slugger Jack Lynch, who’s been a leader for the Metros, gave his fans something to cheer about, by crushing the pitch. Lynch enjoyed the moment, and as he rounded the bases, second baseman Michelle Covington appeared to shout something at him. We tried to read her lips, and think she may have simply saying, “Scoreboard!” Duvall only had a sarcastic grin on her face as he touched home plate. About it, she said, “Good for him. I was more annoyed at my mistake, really, it wasn’t about his bat hurl. Anyone at this level is going to hit a mistake like that hard, and a hitter of his skill is going to do what he did.” Duvall further complimented him, “I will say, those are the type of players you love to have in your dugout.”

If the Metros were expecting an easier time with Jennifer Hughes in the second game, they did not get it. Jennifer has pitched very well in this Classic, but has obviously been overshadowed by the ridiculous numbers that Duvall has at this point. This was a closer game, and in the top of the 4th, another home run by Jack Lynch tied the game at 1 and got the Metros fans awfully excited for a little while, but Meghan Covington, responded with a three-run blast in the bottom of the inning to put Newmanistan back in front. Of the home run, Covington told us, “It’s best to hit them when there are people on base,” with a sly grin, obviously alluding to Lynch’s bat flip against Duvall, and the fact that she just responded to his solo shot in the top half of the inning with the blow in the bottom half. Hughes responded very well after the home run, and the Metros would only have one player reach base after the Lynch home run. “Meghan’s home run took some life out of them. You could tell they were excited to tie it, and then for us to immediately regain the lead and get four in the bottom of the inning, it did a number on them.”

Newmanistan now leads this best-of-five series two games to none, and have outscored Tenburg by an 11-2 margin. Breanne Burks will look to finish things out in the third game of the series, knowing that it would be helpful to get a little more rest before the highly likely series against Super-Llamaland. Although, those Unicorns form Scootalove City have them all tied up right now!

Quarter-final series tied as West Phoenicia and West Saintland battle it out for Semi-finals.

West Saintland was able to gain the upper hand in game 1 where they clobbered The Confederates 5-1. The West Saintland team was on the ball, or on the pitch today, as their pitchers were ruthless in stopping The Confederates from gaining any sort of lead of advantage.

However The Confederates struck back in game 2 by beating West Saintland 7-3, using a similar tactics as there pitchers to stop West Saintland from winning the second game.

During game 2 half time Outspoken Head Cheerleader Laura Towers and her squad had a special surprise for the West Saintland. Equality is paramount in West Phoenicia but so is controversy with people saying or doing how they feel with little thought about what foreigners think or feel.

The cheer squad hit the field during half time clad in shorter than normal skirts of West Phoenician purple and clad in tight purple and gold tops. The cheerleaders ran through a routine attempting to provoke the West Saintland baseball team with taunts of women needing to know there place on the baseball field. Men play better baseball and nuts are not just needed in the stands.
While not opposed to women in baseball, West Phoenicia has their own female league as well as a softball league. Laura Towers feels the World Baseball Classic should be permissible only to men, and the only time a girl should be on field is part of the cheer squad or singing the national anthem. "Only a lesbian would want to play alongside men, we are called the opposite sex for a reason."



Sport pundits predict this play off between both teams will come down to the wire, as neither is willing to give the other too much room to move.

The Confederates have also caused some controversy back home in West Phoenicia with their choice of product endorsement. from Smoke-O one of the leading brands of cigarettes, made with the smooth taste of West Phoenician tobacco from the city-state of Immaculta which has donated millions to the Confederates, assisting with the restructure of the Confederates home stadium, new uniforms and new equipment.

The extra money will assist The Confederates in future International tournaments ensuring they only have the best resources to assist in making their players greater. In return the Confederates will promote Smoke-O advertising on their left sleeve.


The endorsement has caused The Socialist Party, The Prohibition Party, and the Christian Democratic Alliance to join forces with anti-tobacco community groups in condemning The Confederates and the West Phoenician Baseball Association in accepting the money from Smoke-O and for promoting smoking as an acceptable lifestyle, especially when children who attend baseball matches will see the promotion done by their heroes and follow suit.

This morning, the flag of WBC 40 Quarter Finalist was raised in Scootalove City Unicorns stadium. A very proud moments for a team that has only been in three of these games.

Meanwhile in Winchester the games have been close with Scootalove City Unicorns and the Super-Llamaland Tigers. Both games have been in one or two runs of each other.

Bastion Rogers did a great job starting in the second game, but the relief pitchers seem a little tired from the first game. They did there best but the offence didn't really wake up until the end and the whole middle of the second game.

Rick 'The House' King was the one to get a solo home run in the top of the ninth avoiding extra innings that could have let the Tigers have a two nothing series lead.

I think our offence needs to fully wake up and take down Tigers if we have any plans past quarter finals. But hey, gettin to the quarterfinals was already an amazing achievement taking down someone who is ranked second best in the WBC.
