Rugby is the third most popular sport in Elejamie, just falling behind football (aka soccer; gridiron isn't really popular in Elejamie) and ice hockey. Although rugby union is the more popular of the two*, rugby league has a small yet loyal fanbase, especially those living inland. As such, the Elejamian Rugby Federation (ERF) has decided to send its best and its brightest from the Hinckley Bank Rugby League aka the HBRL (which replaced the old HBL, with the main change being that the tournament takes place in one year), which is the only rugby league league in Elejamie. Will they be able to bring a trophy home? Or will it be another tournament of disappointment. Let's find out...

* Rugby sevens isn't counted here because a) it's a variation of rugby union and b) the only rugby sevens tournament in Elejamie is the ERC Sevens,
which is more like a warm-up for the ERC (Elejamian Rugby Championship)

RP injuries to my players: Y. One per match, nothing too gruesome and the longest they can be out is two games.
Godmod injuries to my players: Y, see above.
Hand out yellow cards (sin bin) to my players: Y. A maximum of two per match (feel free to give it to two separate players or give them both to the same player, although that last one will count as a red card - see below).
Hand out red cards (sending off) to my players: Y. Again, one per match and a two game suspension maximum
Godmod other events: It might be a good idea to TG me first

  • Remember it's AE at the beginning of Paete AEtomir's surname, as AE/ae is a letter in the Iyilim alphabet. Think of it as a bit like "ij" in Dutch. Æ is also acceptable (and it's what I used for the 15th RLWC roster). NEVER write "Ae", as that's incorrect.
  • All ages are taken from start of thread. Also, none of my characters have any birthdays coming up, so we don't have to RP any of that.
  • As always, if any of my players interest you, feel free to send me a TG saying which player you want, which club wants them and any other details (like wages, bonuses, etc.) you think you should mention.
  • "Starting interchanges" may seem like an oxymoron but, unless you choose someone else to take their place, they're basically the four players sitting on the bench for each match.

Lisander Rugby League team

Team Modifier:+2

About Rugby League in Lisander:
Rugby League is somewhat unpopular in the Principality. The sport is mainly played by Vassiyan Immigrants (8 players and both coaches of the team are Vassiyan-born). While Rugby Union have a Professional League and LRU have lots of sponsoring contracts, Rugby League have minimum public support by requirement. Lisander National Sports Confederation only accepted to support the team after Lisander accepted the duty of NSRB Vice-President.

Some players are Rugby Union players in amateur teams. The captain of the team, Ilie Scarlat, is a Vassian-born Lisanderian that plays Rugby Union for Hárpias de Grívnia, recently promoted to Lisander Rugby Union PRO12.

OOC: Lisander public oppinion and mass media will deliberately ignore this tournament and focus in Rugby Union Regional Tournaments. I'll probably focus on some Roleplay with Vassiya.

THE IRON SYNDICATE NATIONAL TEAM
The Black Arrows

The Iron Syndicate is a massive and futuristic country located in the Sea of Iron, between Rushmore and Esportiva and Atlantian Oceania, and that country is unique in that it's run by a large coalition of corporations that have banded together to bring a higher standard of life to their islands and to advance technological progress and prosperity. The country itself is made up of dozens of islands with varying climates, with the northern ones generally being warm, the southern ones generally being cool, and the middle ones being temperate. The nation has been self declared to be the Most Decadent Place On Earth, and is ruled by the Executive Board, an elected group of leaders that is responsible for all national decisions. The official leader of the country is the Chief Executive, and for now, that position is held by Augustus Darkstar, who is on his third term.

Rugby has always been popular in the Syndicate and they showed their true talent when they crashed the party at the 25th Rugby Union World Cup and left as champions despite having no rank to their name. But just because the rest of the world hadn't seen them didn't mean they didn't have skills, and they created several superstars and overcame adversity from the political sphere to take the crown after winning every match. That, however, is in rugby union. Rugby league is a different sport, one that's played in the territories and not the islands, and it's time for the Syndicate to prove themselves in that now. It's a whole new challenge. But if the other code of the sport is any indication, they'll be up to it.

The Kiaser Colonies Rugby League World Cup Roster

Image

Coaches: Jonathan Inman, Ray Larkin, Gil Brooks
Captain: Jeff Bollinger
Nickname: The Second Sons
Style Modifier: +5

The Second Sons got their nickname from the fact that rugby league has always been the second sport to rugby union in the Kiaser Colonies. The more stop start fashion of the game that never quite grabbed the fans attention lead to teams playing super creative attacking rugby to draw in fans. The professional game in the Kiaser Colonies often takes on a frantic pace with loose defending and high scores. Clubs aren't afraid to take risks trying to make scores from anywhere on the pitch. In this sentiment, the national team features several young talents and the most impressive players in the GO! Rugby League Premiership.

Racao national rugby league roster
Rugby in Racao
Rugby is currently one of the most popular sports in Racao, along with athletics and association football. It was originally introduced to Racao with British colonizers; army officers and soldiers would play the game during their off time. Although rugby has been consistently popular in Racao for the past seventy years, Racao has never fielded a rugby team of any sort due to the lack of funding and a lack of development of players. Most rugby played in Racao is informal and played in streets and alleyways, with however many players are available at any one time. As a result of this structure, most rugby players in Racao tend to lack what foreigners would call technique or finesse. However, they do have a considerable amount of raw talent and skill gained from years of experience. Only recently have academies opened to develop this talent into something on par with rugby teams in other nations. Because of this recent development, most of the players on Racao's roster are quite young, with many younger than 24.

There is a rugby union league in Racao, with 8 teams, founded about a year ago. Voanorova Valiant was crowned champion, with Port Louis Liberty only one point behind in the standings. Several of Racao's sevens players currently play in this league. Plans are currently in progress to establish a small sevens league. Sevens rugby in Racao is a little smaller than union and league rugby, but because its smaller structure is more entertaining and exciting and less time-demanding, it is on track to grow to be the most popular form of rugby in Racao. The Racao Rugby Federation hopes to achieve success at this rugby tournament, and hopes that this success will further prompt development of rugby in Racao.

A note on names: Racaoan names often have the prefix "Ra", which is equivalent to the English "Mister"; English-speaking colonizers colonized most of Racao, and French-speakers colonized some of it, so many Racaoans have English and French names, as well as traditional Racaoan names

Emlynn Pumped For World Cup

Image

Skaganes Dogs Second-Rower Emlynn Thegolor is pumped for the upcoming Rugby League World Cup as Spaam prepares to compete for this first time. With the SRL finally running a national competition, hard-working Rugby League players have finally been given the opportunity to compete at an elite level, earning professional wages for the first time. Emlynn is one of those players, starring in her teams run to third place in the inaugaral competition. "To play this game your whole life and to be given the opportunity to dedicate all your time to it, is literally my dream. I get to travel 'round the country, clashing with the best players in the nation, and finally giving the fans the spectacle they deserve."

One of the reasons that the competition was finally started was the opportunity to field team in the World Cup, and the newly formed and highly funded SRL made sure to move quickly. What was without question was that the first season was an incredible success, with an average of 40,000 spectators per game. The Dogs were one of the teams that benefited from this popularity, in conjunction with their much hyped rivalry with the Paatukar Cats. "The games against the Cats were definitely the highlight of the season, and we got some of our biggest crowds at those games. To have the first two finish in draws just showed how close we were during the regular season."

With the best players in the nation on show, this allowed the Ministry of Sport selectors the ability to pick and choose the best in the country, and to find talent that otherwise might've gone without notice. Emlynn was one of those stars, as she blossomed throughout the season with the ability to focus completely on her game. Along with her teammate, prop Samrian Sylmenor, their ability to both break through and make tackles caught the eyes of team organisers, and earned them the call-up to the national team. "To represent your nation, in anything, is the highest honour. I am so excited to be playing in the Kiaser Colonies, and to be watched by all the fans back home. And I just hope that I can do them all proud. No matter what, it's about time we showed the world how good we are, and how far the Spaamanian spirit can take us."

Spaam's first match is a highly anticipated matchup against the Free Republics on Tuesday, and will be streamed live on Kit Sports 1.

Sporting World

The FFR has a National Rugby League Team now!
by: Salikh Masaev

Tomorrow is a historic day in the history of Republican sports as the National Rugby League Team will fly the Blue and White flag for the first time against the team from Spaam, which is also making its debut. Of the 24 teams competing in the 17th World Cup, only nine come into this tournament ranked. Two of them are in our group, Devonta and Abanhfleft. We will also face Aquitayne and POGGERS before our pool is through. I'm expecting this opening match tomorrow to be one of our most difficult because the Spaam team looks very strong in practice so far, or so our scouts have informed me.

Upon my return to the nation of my birth 6 months ago, I was surprised to discover that rugby is not popular here and that rugby league is even less popular than union. In Sudernius, rugby league is the most popular sport but due to the difficulty involved in securing permission from all of the various road owners for foreigners to enter Sudernius, international sports is simply not a profitable enterprise in that nation. Besides, Sudernians have little national identity as most of them instead identify themselves with the cause of their Global Revolution against all forms of socialism and statism. Even after realizing that I could not find rugby league players in the FFR, I still nevertheless decided that a Republican National Team would be more viable than a Sudernian National Team as a business enterprise, so I revised my plan of action accordingly.

To build a Rugby League team, I recruited 21 of the most college gridiron players from across the Federation and I brought in a staff filled with successful rugby league coaches from Sudernius to teach these players a crash course in rugby league. I looked specifically for players that were athletic enough to play both ways since the typical quarterback, kicker or lineman is not going to be able to handle the rigor of a rugby match and fortunately I was able to find quite a few two way players from Division IV schools and community colleges. Over the past few months, these players trained extensively in rugby league and played exhibition matches against Sudernian teams before small crowds at high school stadiums across Malifornia. Now, as the World Cup is ready to begin, I believe that these kids are ready to prove themselves on the international stage.

You can watch the National Rugby League Team's games live on Freedom Sports Eleven. Other games from the Rugby League World Cup will air on tape delay throughout the day across the Freedom Sports family of networks. Be sure to tune in and watch us as we play to bring glory to the Greatest Nation in the Multiverse!

Salikh Masaev is the coach of the Republican National Rugby League Team. Mr. Masaev developed a love of rugby league while growing up in Sudernius. Living abroad in Sudernius, he would become a successful coach at the youth level, becoming just the 4th coach to win both the Sudernius Youth Rugby League Championship and the National Youth Rugby League Championship in the same year. Due to the anarchic nature of Sudernian society, there is no single sports organizing body in the country and the different youth leagues use slightly different rules. After the political situation stabilized in the FFR, he decided to return to the nation of his birth and found a National Rugby League Team.

An Alpen Man in Wishtonia

So, this is my first attempt at something like this. A blog, I guess they call it. This is different for me. I’m sometimes at a loss when it comes to civilian uses of technology. I never saw much use for it until I joined the military. I know that’s kind of far from the rest of my generation, but, that’s just how I am. I’m still amazed at how cell phones work.

You’re probably wondering who I am. My name is Sylvain Renkart. I grew up in a suburb of Schwartzgarten, a bit city in Neu Engollon. Now, as you can probably tell from the title, I no longer reside in the Confederacy. I did well enough in school, then did my mandatory service in the NEDF, specifically, in the Militia. I made it into one of the Alpen Regiments, although that’s not that hard. Half the regiments in the Militia are Alpen, but I guess they’re still considered more elite than regular infantry because you add in those mountaineering skills. The 34th Alpen was my unit, and, as with a lot of other former Neu Engollian soldiers, I didn’t want to give up the lifestyle, so I did another term of service. Then, as many of my countrymen have also done, I decided that I wanted to be paid quite a bit more for my dedication to the military life and also have a chance to see real action. That’s not really very likely in a small neutral democracy. That’s when I walked into the Uli Schwyz recruiting office one fine autumn day.

I ended up in Hutanjia for the War and to help fulfill the USG contract for the Hutanjian government, and there I stayed to find employ with the Hutanjian Republican Army as a company commander. I will get into that, but I thought I’d start off with a simple, fun topic: Cursing in Wishtonian.

Wishtonians are generally considered to be people from The Cardwith Islands, Hutanjia and Kenega. There are a few other nations that border the Wishton Sea and even share some culture and heritage, but usually when people talk about Wishtonians, they’re talking about citizens from these three countries.

Hutanjians are Polynesian in appearance or racial character. Slightly Asiatic features with lighter brown skin. Cardwithians are for the most part Melanesian, that is of a more darker cast than your typical Polynesian and with tighter, curly hair as opposed to straight. There is some blending and you can see some people in both countries that seem of mixed heritage. Kenega has people of both Melanesian and Polynesian heritage, but the majority of them are also of mixed blood with European/Westerner ancestry, courtesy of the Gaulic and Erlenic colonists that settled the island. Kenega has the highest percentage of mixed Westerner heritage in the Wishton Sea. Kenega, it should also be mentioned, is a commonwealth and still is subservient to the Erlenic Union. We’ll get into the details of Kenega in a later blog post.

There are three main islands in the Cardwiths, simply named North, East and West Cardwith. There are two main islands in Hutanjia, Nesselberg, which is the Western island, and Nevorn, which is the Eastern island. Kenega is just one little island. One might point out that Nesselberg, Cardwith and Nevorn, not to mention some city names, are odd, Anglo-sounding names for a Polynesian culture, and you’d be right. They were named by the Erlenic colonists who arrived in the early 19th century and none of the Wishtonian nations have bothered to change the names back to the earlier native names, although you still see them used on some documents.

Those that go on to secondary and higher education, which still isn’t a lot in any of these countries, pride themselves on speaking the King’s English. The lower classes speak patois, a mix of native, Gaulic French and English words. That’s why they have some of their own cuss words.
I don’t really know their origins, but here are some of the top ones you’ll hear, and when you are there longer than your typical tourist, you’ll hear them A LOT!
So yeah, here goes:

Fideh - This word means ‘fuck’ basically. Depending on usage, it’s a verb, a noun, an adjective, just like our F bomb in English/Common. I hear it pretty casually used to the point that I forget to upbraid my soldiers on using it in public. It’s way too common for a cuss word that it’s probably lost much of its bite.

Pono - Phallus. Yep, the male member. Also pretty casually used. Recently it was allowed to be used on primetime network and cable television in Hutanjia. Interesting side note, the tribal warrior dance that is performed prior to rugby matches and during other important ceremonies is called the Panehu. That’s no accident as to how similar are the two words. The early incarnations of the Panehu were about showing off your manhood in order to prove you were the superior warrior. I have never seen a version of this and being a heterosexual guy, I’m not that eager to, but some groups still perform it for cultural heritage purposes.

Sapa - Feces. Scat. Shit. Honestly, I don’t hear this much. More often they opt for the English slang words for shit, but if you go deep into the jungles in the hinterlands of southern Nevorn and on Nesselberg, and in the southern fishing villages of the Cardwiths, you’ll still hear it.

Kupos - The female parts. The C word. See You Next Tuesday. A bit more taboo in many circles. Worse than any of the above.

There’s a few others, but nothing really worth noting that’s in heavy usage. A lot of it has to do with context and phrasing, which boggles me and I couldn’t possibly explain here in one little blog posting. The Wishtonians, and especially Hutanjians, can get very elaborate with their colorful phrases when ripping someone down.

Please don’t send me angry emails, not that there’s probably many of you reading this. I know they’re cuss words. I just thought it would be a light, funny, simple way to begin my unique intro to the Wishtonian area and culture. Funny as I can be, anyway. I have more blog entries coming and I look forward to your constructive comments. Thanks.

Syl Renkart.

Chapter One

“This, is an absolute fucking disaster!” shouted Elias Marino, the Commissioner of the Territorial Championship, as he walked into the board meeting while being flanked by several other high ranking suits that were a part of the front office of the biggest rugby league competition on the islands. “We’re getting beat in every field and on every front and unless you can come up with some solution to fix it, we’re going to get beat on our own turf, too. You probably expected another calmly worded meeting where nobody raises their voices and where nobody gets held accountable, but you are NOT getting what you expected this time! You all haven’t earned that! Not after letting the ratings for our offseason coverage tank at a historical level like this!”

“Calm down, the season hasn’t started-”

“I will not calm down as long as our product is viewed as a massively inferior one, and as long as the Rugby Syndicate continues to try to monopolize our game into a single code! You want me to calm down right now? Really? You think the offseason ratings don’t matter, is that what it is?”

“I’m saying that we had the better regular season than the Rugby Syndicate and that we need not be worried because they’re getting a little boost from their team winning their World Cup,” stated the board member who had spoken up, causing Elias to get even more enraged.

The man’s face was red, his nostrils were flaring, there was a sweat running down his forehead; every physical sign indicated his anger, and he did nothing to hold it back. “A little boost? You must have your head in the sand to think that this is just a little boost that will go away once the regular season starts! They may have had a worse season but it doesn’t matter because perception is reality and everyone perceives them as being the best competition in rugby! Nobody will know that we have more parity and a more exciting title race if they never give us a chance and they never tune into the coverage and the matches! They don’t want to see an exciting battle for the title that spans all of the territories! What they want is to see Highlanders or Central or Independent or the Kingfishers dominate week in and week out with their flashy star studded lineups that are filled with World Cup players, something that we can’t compete with them in!”

“That’s your job to market players, not ours. If they don’t think that our players are stars, we can’t do much about it other than ask the league to run more commercials and use more compelling coverage to get people to watch,” Aiden Srsen, the manager of the Black Isle Monsters and one of the coaches in attendance, pointed out.

“Are you saying that the problem is on us and on our coverage? Because you’re damn wrong,” said Manaaki Esposito, the CEO of Black Isle Broadcasting, the main television affiliate of the Territorial Championship. “Our coverage may not have been the most hot thing on TV, but everyone who did tune in gave us good ratings and said that we were the best keep secret in sports, compared to the Rugby Syndicate, which is reaching oversaturation after their World Cup popularity surge. Just wait, this storm will pass-”

“Being the best kept secret on TV is a problem!” shouted Elias, gesturing for emphasis. “If we’re the best kept secret, then that means that nobody is watching! The quality of coverage doesn’t matter if people don’t watch it in the first place, and the ratings don’t say how good anything is, only how many TV sets were tuned to it! I don’t care what the reviews say, all I want is TVs turned to our broadcasts and asses in the seats in the stadiums, and so far, we’re holding up with the stadiums part but not with the broadcasts part!”

“What would you suggest to fix the problem, then? We’re already giving the Championship the priority over all of our other properties, including racing, National League football, Developmental League football, and basketball. What more are you asking from us? If you want more people to tune in, then you need to put a product out that can attract more viewers. Because we can’t give you any more time on TV and any more coverage, we’re already giving you a great deal of that and we still have other clients to deal with.”

“I don’t care who comes up with the solution. What I want is for someone to find or make a way for us to catch the Rugby Syndicate and get our own national team to get the same popularity as them. They win their World Cup, we’ll give it our best shot in ours, but we need more than that. They were beating us badly even before the World Cup and all that tournament did was turn a beating into a murder. I’m not biased in where I find my solutions! All I want is numbers and I don’t care if it’s BIB that gives me those numbers or if it’s the coaches or the players or if it’s someone else! And you know what? Because I’m not biased, I’m bringing in some help to fix this crisis of ours before it gets out of hand, since you all are clearly incapable of handling it by yourselves like you’re supposed to.”

There was silence in the room until Elias pointed to one of the men that was flanking him, who gave a brief nod in acknowledgement and removed the shades that he had been wearing, to reveal a bit more of his face. “Meet Tim Gold, the head of the Gorilla Marketing Firm. He will be in charge of marketing from now on and you all have been brought here to learn that you will be listening to his every order. This is the man behind the rise of some of the biggest Formula S stars in recent memory and the rise of some of the biggest gridiron stars we’ve seen, and now, he’s taking on his biggest job and helping us compete with our rivals from the islands. The name of his firm is intentional. His methods may be unconventional, but so far they have worked. And now, you can call him your new boss because of it. If anyone has questions, ask them now. If you have complaints, you can leave. The decision has already been made. You all made your bed, you know. From now on, you’re going to have to lie in it.”

Opening Ceremony Footage, Live from the National Rugby Stadium, Highroyds

"And finally we have native aboriginal dancers representing the host nation, the Kiaser Colonies. This dance in particular is a variation on a traditional coming of age performance for many communities. In this sense it symbolises the coming of age of the Kiaser Colonies bridging the gap from competing to hosting international tournaments and welcoming other nations to ours. It also stands for the coming of age or beginning of a new era for the Kiaser Colonies rugby league teams. And with a final flurry of fireworks, thus concludes the opening ceremony for Rugby League World Cup Seventeen. And now we move on to the opening match between the Kiaser Colonies and Lisander, kick-off is five minutes away. We turn now to our panel for a final preview of the game."

"The Kiaser Colonies and Lisander are both new to the world cup set up and have varying styles of play. By and large, both sides favour attacking rugby but the Kiaser's definitely lack for something in defence. They are stronger in loose play and when trying to create something off the cuff. If they are going to win today, there best chance is to outscore Lisander. The key things here will be the battle for possession and seeing which side is more clinical in attack. Missing a chance in this game in a world cup could be crucial, and a slow start here could be a dent in both sides hopes. Honestly, we think this is a pretty tough one to call but hopefully the Kiaser's can use the energy of the crowd for the occasion to see this one home."

Spaam Gets Perfect Start

The Spaamanian National Rugby League team got the perfect start to the World Cup with a two try to one win over the Free Republics at Lomond Park. Paatukar Cats captain Quosan Xyrna got the team off to a great start in the first half, scoring off a offload from fullback Meira Lianelis on the right side of the uploads, then converted his own try to send Spaam to a 6-nil lead after 16 minutes. But the lead didn't last long, with an 80 metre run by Free Republics fullback Rudolph Bazarov ten minutes later, which they also converted to tie the game up. A careless penalty by second-rower Emlynn Thegolor in front of her own try-line gave her opponents a chance at a penalty goal, which they took to go into the break with a two point lead.

The second half saw both teams trying to arm-wrestle the game from each other, with a number of players sent off for concussion tests, and co-captain Ruven Vana will face an anxious wait as he failed his test after coming off in the 60th minute. Spaam finally got points back on the board with their own penalty goal to tie up the game, and then scored shortly after, after a repeat set following the restart, with East Spaam Bears winger Conred Holacaryn taking a towering bomb off Quosan Xyrna in the left corner of the try zone. Xyrna converted again to give them a handy lead with 13 minutes left in the game, and the defense stayed strong to ensure that they came away with the win.

Spaam next face Poggers, who showed a lot of strength to keep the 5th ranked United States of Devonta down in a low-scoring match.

Spaam 14 Tries: Xyrna (15) Holacaryn (66) Goals: Xyrna (16, 60, 67)
Free Republics 8 Tries: Bazarov (25) Goals: She (26, 36)

Around The Grounds

Pool A
World Number Three Neu Engolon had an easy win over the Valhallan Union to top the pool table after one game, but they are only just ahead of the Iron Syndicate, who had an almost as impressive win over the Balkvla Islands. In third place is 9th ranked Elajamie, who showed dangerous defense with a shut out of Sha Mobutia.

Pool B
2nd ranked Ko-Oren and 15th ranked Racao share the top of the table with 14 point wins over Vassiya and Natanians and Nosts respectively. Meanwhile Mattijana almost shut out Tobiasia, who scored a field goal in the dying minutes to grab some dignity back.

Pool C
There was no surprise as 9th ranked Abanhfleft had a six try to two win over Aquitayne to start at the top of the table, while Spaam's win managed to get them a surprising second place position after their game against Free Republics. Meanwhile, world number five United States of Devonta had a scare against Poggers, who almost caused the upset of the round by only going down by two points.

Pool D
Hosts the Kiaser Colonies had the best start to the competition, by taking care of Lisander by two tries to one, while the worlds best team Hutanjia only just managed to beat the Union of Socialist Alpine Republics by an unconverted try. However, it was 8th seed Darmen who were at the end of the biggest upset as the unranked Xanaxstan got up against them by 10 points to 8.
