Senrian scientists say carbon dioxide emissions can be turned into sustainable concrete
May 27, 2017 | by Takauzi Okakura | An interdisciplinary team of scientists from the University of Keisi say they have turned carbon dioxide- similar to the carbon dioxide released from factory smokestacks- into an environmentally-friendly form of concrete within the laboratory, and are hoping to implement it on a larger scale.

With assistance from research subsidies provided by the Senrian government and initiatives provided by private business, the team- led by professors Masahiro Kumegawa, Ryouhei Minamoto, Yosiyasu Murasaki, Kazutosi Yamada, and Itirou Yosida- has been able to successfully produce small samples of sustainable concrete.

"This is not the first attempt to capture carbon dioxide gas and repurpose it," Professor Murasaki- who is a professor of biochemistry and bioengineering- explained, "but we believe it is one of the most promising. We have been able not only to capture more gas, but to put it to active use rather than merely just capturing and storing it."

If it is successfully developed and utilized, this new concrete would turn carbon dioxide into a resource that could be used to benefit humanity. Concrete produced using this method could construct transport infrastructure, schools, hospitals, and other useful buildings and facilities. Senria's strong industrial sector would also make it ideal for the production of this new concrete. "In a sense," Professor Murasaki said, "this could turn Senria into a leading contributor to the global environmental movement."

Factory emissions and the process of making conventional concrete both release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere; the team of scientists hopes that the implementation of this new, more sustainable concrete on a wider scale would greatly reduce emissions as a result.

"Thus far, we have only been able to produce the concrete on the laboratory scale," said Professor Yamada, who is a professor of civil engineering. "But this is an important proof of concept, because it tells us that this can be done. We hope to be able to produce and utilize it on a larger scale within a few years. If everything goes well, we could be producing and using this nationally very soon."

Senrian team hoping to break "semifinal slump" at eigth Coupe d'Esquarium
May 27, 2017 | by Masasige Yamamoto | Senria's national team is hoping to make it to the semifinals of the upcoming Coupe d'Esquarium, says head coach Katuo Simizu, after being eliminated in the quarter-finals in the past three editions of the international soccer tourney.

The so-called "semifinal slump" has seen the Senrian team eliminated by Nevanmaa in the Coupe's fifth edition, Atlia in the sixth, and Ainin in the seventh. Atlia and Ainin both went on to win their respective coupes; Nevanmaa took the bronze medal in its respective Coupe.

"Obviously we are hoping to break past the quarter-finals," Simizu told reporters earlier today as the Dragons prepared for their first match of this Coupe, which will be held in Toksan. "That is the biggest obstacle we've had in recent years, and we're hoping that this is the year we'll be able to overcome it."

The Senrian team won the Esquarian Football Classic- which preceded the Coupe- in 1984, 2002, & 2004, and hosted it in 1972 and 1990; however, it has never made it to the final round of the Coupe d'Esquarium.

But Simizu told reporters he's confident his team will be able to change that. "We've got a good squad this year, they're very driven, and very well-prepared. I am more than confident in their abilities both as individuals and as a team."

Team captain Sigeru Watanabe told reporters that while the team did hope to make it to the semifinals, they "would not lose sight of more immediate goals". "We will have to make it through the group stage and the earlier rounds first, and there are fewer weak teams this edition than in past ones. We cannot get so focused on the future that we lose track of the present."

"It will be difficult," he concluded, "but I am confident that- so long as we remain focused- we will be able to triumph."

Senria has been placed into Group D, with East Cortoguay, Korizland, and Vyvland. East Cortoguay and Korizland have never made it past the group stage in a Coupe; while Vyvland won the Coupe twice, failing to break from the group stage in the fifth and sixth editions of the tournament and being eliminated in the Group of 16 in the seventh.

Senria's first match will be held tomorrow in Sinhung, Toksan. The Dragons will be facing the team from Korizland. The match will be available on all major channels.

Atlia to face Ainin in clash of champions
The champions of the sixth coupe will face the champions of the seventh after being drawn into a so-called "group of death"

May 28, 2017 | Borneung, Toksan - Atlia's Stallions will face Ainin's Coyotes in their first match of the eighth Coupe d'Esquarium, in what is being billed as a "clash of champions" between the team that won the sixth edition of the international tournament and the team that won the seventh edition.

"This is going to be an interesting start, no doubt," captain Abdilâh Aydoğan. "The Aininians are a very strong team, they're well-trained, well-prepared, and of course they won the previous edition. We'll have to bring all of our fight to this match, and put in all our effort from the get-go." Aydoğan said the team's strategy would likely be to reclaim the explosive offense that propelled them to victory in the sixth Coupe. "The fact that our offense wasn't able to get enough goals in was part of why we struggled in the previous edition," he said. "If we want to break into the knockout rounds again, we'll have to rekindle that flame and score as many goals as we can."

The match- and the Coupe as a whole- will likely be seen as an attempt to redeem Atlia's failure in the seventh edition of the Coupe, where it finished third in its group, behind Senria and Vyvland. The team's poor performance in the seventh edition came as a disappointment and as a shock to Atlian fans, particularly given that the Stallions had won the previous Coupe- which was also the team's debuting edition.

Nevertheless, many Atlians are excited for this Coupe, particularly for the first match. "This is sure to be an immensely exciting match, even if we don't win," said Süleyman Demirtaş of Şehiray. "This is a match between two absolutely fantastic teams, and I'm sure it'll be riveting to watch."

The two other teams within Atlia's Group B- widely billed as a "group of death" internationally due to Ainin and Atlia's presence- are Alemannia and Fjalland. Atlia will face Fjalland on June 1, and Alemannia on June 3. While many are confident that Atlia will make it out of the group, others are more cautious. Manager Enver Fahri told reporters that there was "still a lot of room for us to be surprised". "We cannot forget that Atlia was once an underestimated team," he said. "It's entirely possible that Alemannia or Fjalland could surprise us very badly, and we need to make sure they can't do that."

There are four groups aside from Group B, which Atlia was sorted into. Group A's first matches will be between Arkiasis- who Atlia defeated in its finals match in the sixth edition- and the united team from Kaona and Phikam, and the teams from the small island nation of Montecara and the small island nation of Pisdara. Group C will begin with matches between Pavonistade and Daecon, and Namor and host nation Toksan. Group D's first matches will be between East Cortoguay and two-time champion Vyvland, and Senria and Korizland. Finally, Group E will see Xiaodong face Lanos while soccer powerhouses Luziyca and Nevanmaa face each other down.

Atlia's match against Ainin will be tomorrow, May 28. Television and radio coverage of the match will be provided by ARTK, and by other major channels.

Coupe d'Esquarium VIII - Xiaodong draws against Lanos in disappointing first match

Borneung, Toksan - In a disappointing opening match the Xiaodongese football team has drawn against Lanos in the first day of the Coupe d'Esquarium VIII.

The match saw the Xiaodongese striker Xi Chengji score the first goal 10 minutes into the game, but apart from a Lanosian goal after half time the match quickly turned into a stalemate between the two teams, resulting in a draw. Xiaodongese fans will be disappointed as the Xiaodongese team has failed to improve from its dismal performance at the last Coupe d'Esquarium, with matches between football powerhouses Luziyca and Nevanmaa scheduled for the 1st and the 3rd set to produce similarly bad results.

"The Lanos team played very well, so its natural that we are disappointed that we only drew in a match we know we could have won" team captain Song Qiabiao told the East Sea Daily. "We have an enormous uphill task facing us if we are to beat or draw against Nevanmaa and Luziyca, so all we can hope for is that we can learn from this and try harder next time". Already criticism is being levelled at manager Chen Yongzhi who replaced Mao Pai Nai in February after the latter stepped down after the disastrous Coupe d'Esquarium VII which saw Xiaodong lose all but one of its games.

The other teams in Group E, Nevanmaa and Luziyca, also drew 1-1. Meanwhile in Group A there was another pair of draws, with neither Kaona-Phaonam nor Arkiasis scoring any goals whilst Montecara and Pisdara drew 1-1. In Group B Alemannia have become the champions after an impressive debut winning 4-3 to Fjalland, whilst the winners of the last two Coupes Atlia and Ainin face off together with Atlia coming out on top beating Ainin 3-2. In Group C Pavonistade and Daecon drew 2-2 whilst Toksan likely buoyed playing on home ground won against Namor 4-3. Group E saw the biggest upset with rookie team Korizland beating Senria, despite Senria's likely use of performance enhancing drugs giving them their usual edge. East Cortoguay meanwhile lost handily to Vyvland 0-1.

The next game will be on the 1st with Xiaodong facing against Luziyca.

Patriots draw 1-1 with the Lions

The match

HWANGGUM, TOKSAN - At the first match of the eighth Chaska i Esquarium, our Patriotic lads tied the Nevans 1-1, when just seconds to go in the match, Edward Song scored a goal against the Nevans, resulting in the match ending in a draw.

The match
13 minutes in the first half, Niko Väisänen scored a goal against the Patriots. This immediately triggered an attempt at revenge: 18 minutes in, Mario Rusenov attempted to score a goal, but was blocked by Juho Väätäinen.

This sparked an attempt by the Lions to score a goal, when Tero Kolkkala tried to score a goal, but was blocked by Jung at the 22 minute mark. Jung then attempted to score a goal, but was blocked by Lauri Männikkö at the 25 minute mark.

Once the ball was passed to Ari Nurmela, he made a valiant attempt to try and break through the Patriotic defenses, but was stopped at the 27 minute mark by Song. Song took the opportunity to pass the ball to Sandra Todorov, and at the 29 minute mark, Sandra attempted to score a goal. It reached the net, but it ricocheted off of a goalpost.

By now, morale on both sides started to wear a bit thin, and there was no real serious attempts to try to score another goal on either side for the rest of the half. It ended with the Nevans leading 1-0.

The second half was much of the same, although at the 67 minute mark, Johannes Eklund attempted to break past the Patriotic defenses. Alas, the Lion failed to do so as Jung successfully prevented it from getting close enough to the goal.

Finally, at the 89 minute mark, after an uneventful second half, Song managed to break through the Nevan defenses, and managed to deliver a blow to the Lions, with just seconds left to spare.

The match ended with a 1-1 draw.

Analysis
Assistant Manager Barbara Schmidt said that "the Patriots have done their best against the Nevans. They've played their hardest against the Nevans, but the Nevans have a strong cohesion; a strong defense, and they have practiced incredibly well."

"While we have practiced pretty well, it was not enough to defeat the Nevans," she stated. "When we reach our next match [against Xiaodong], we will train harder in order to ensure that we will defeat Xiaodong."

Manifoot Destiny: Why Pavonistade is slated to win the next edition of the CdE

Prophecy dictates that Pavonistade will inevitably
win the eight edition of Coupe d'Esquarium.
There are undeniable proofs to demonstrate why
this is - or will be - so.

As Coupe d'Esquarium VIII dawns upon us, it is quite obvious that football fans around the world are preparing to support their country's football teams, all of which will be competing in a strange place that goes by the name of Toksan. Whether or not Toksan is strange, or whether or not the CdE turns out to be good or bad for certain countries, one thing is for certain.

According to the prophecy, Pavonistade will make the greatest football comeback for generations to come and will be the victors of this edition of the CdE.

When our country came out terribly in the previous editions, it shall re-emerge in a way that everyone can expect but no one can stop. Even if the Fearless falter in some matches, no force on this planet can prevent them from becoming the champions of CdE VIII. Here are the indisputable reasons why manifoot destiny will guide us to unseen glory.

The Prophecy Benefits Us
Earlier on I mentioned this prophecy that will support the Fearless along their journey. What prophecy, you may ask? The same prophecy dictating that the champion of one CdE shall fall in the next CdE. The same prophecy controlling the successes and failures of all participating football teams. You may or may not heard of it, and honestly I can't blame you for that, but I'll show you why this prophecy is true.

Let's take Atlia for example, this tiny little place that I can't really find on the map. It managed to win CdE VI (i.e. the sixth edition of the CdE) and become the champions, but they didn't carry their success over in the next edition. It turned out that in CdE VII, Atlia's team bombed harder than the FMPA when they attacked the Mzambala Naval Base.

We can also look to Vyvland as another example, whether or not you can find it on a map. In CdE IV, Vyvland was notorious for beating our Fearless, which happened to debut in CdE IV and got to the finals nearly undefeated. But in CdE V, Vyvland failed to get out of its group stage, which saw some surprises for football fans. By the way, Pavonistade also screwed up terribly in CdE V after doing so well in CdE IV, failing to get into the knockoffs as well.

Finally we should take note of Ainin. In the previous edition (CdE VII), it broke the Coyote's curse before it won the finals and became the champions of said edition. But in CdE VI, Ainin flopped hard and did not make it to the knockoffs. It seems strange that the successes in one CdE turn into failures in the next CdE, or vice versa. Or is it so strange?

As you can see, some prophecy is at work here. Since the greatest success the Fearless had seen was at CdE IV, and they didn't do so well for pretty much every CdE after that, the prophecy must be indicating that the Fearless will emerge in spectacular fashion. How spectacular? In a way that will ascend them to this edition's victors.

The Fearless Don't Cheat
Pavonistadians are known for not cheating, except for a few sore losers or a few disgraceful exceptions outside of the CdE. The Fearless don't do drugs and they don't covertly influence other teams with drugs. By simply not cheating, the Fearless are making themselves true winners. Well, maybe not in the sense of winning the finals, but Pavonistadians aren't pathetic.

But other teams may be much more pathetic, say the Daeconese Rangers. There was absolutely no way that the Fearless could have drawn with the Rangers 2-2 without the Rangers cheating. The way they cheated was listed above; they did everything that the Fearless didn't do. Some mysterious Daeconese man must have enhanced the Rangers' performance with illegal opioids and drugged the Fearless with fentanyl, causing both the Rangers to excel and the Fearless to falter to a point that a draw resulted.

This sounds baseless, but if there's an investigation launched into this mess, there should be definitive proof implicating the cheater Rangers. This also implies a nasty future; if one team is cheating, then there must be a bunch of teams cheating as well. The Toksanese Little Marchers, the next team that the Fearless would face next, may be no exception. As the Little Marchers are playing on their home territory, there is no doubt that they would try to secure dominance over us or everyone else, and that includes cheating tactics like Daeconese-style covert drugging operations. Inevitably the Little Marchers will be caught red-handed and they will be marching straight out of the CdE in shame.

There's no telling how many teams are cheating. The Frederick's Fries-obsessed Luziycans seems to be doing strangely well, as are the Korizlanders, whose homeland I can't find at all. There's one prevailing truth, though. The Fearless is pretty much the only team in the whole CdE that is guaranteed to play fairly; that is, not using drugs or trying to negatively influence other teams. Prophecy will be kind to those that don't cheat and will show no mercy to those that cheat.

All Other Countries Are Uncivilized
The only truly civilized country competing in the whole CdE is Pavonistade. Coincidence, or not?

First of all, our country is led by President Kal Simpsen, the torchbearer of civilization and the ultimate repellent of all forms of savagery. He will ensure that Pavonistade stays civilized throughout the CdE, and therefore ensure the success of the civilized Fearless. All other barbaric football teams can take note or post losses. Also, the first country to cheat in a match with the Fearless or shame them unjustly will get the honor of having their relations severed by President Simpsen(1).

Second of all, a lot of countries participating in CdE VIII are also full of savages. Xiaodong is the most straightforward example, because it is already overrun by subhumans who show no regards for the sanctity of human life. Good thing our country severed the remainder of our bilateral relations. Senria is no better as it only quarrels with the equally-subhuman nation of Xiaodong, so it's no surprise it got defeated by the newcomer Korizland.

I will run a list of each participating countries (excluding Pavonistade and the two nations mentioned above) and point out how they are uncouth compared to us.

• Korizland - irrelevant beyond all repair
• Vyvland - has higher levels of goat bestiality than anywhere else
• Nevanmaa - racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, republicophobic just plain uncivilized compared to Pavonistade
• Lanos - where is this country?
• Luziyca - its citizens probably eat Frederick's Fries or some fast foods more than three days a week

It's quite clear that Pavonistade has none of these disadvantages or these barbaric qualities. This means that the Fearless will stand a chance against other teams, even if they don't do so well initially.

So What?
The eight edition of Coupe d'Esquarium is the best edition for the Fearless to succeed tremendously since CdE IV. In fact, manifoot destiny dictates that we become champions because prophecy is on our side, we are not cheaters and we are not savages. Sure, everyone that we will be facing can try to put up as good a defence as possible. But one thing is for certain: the Fearless may be weakened, the Fearless may be cheated upon by other teams, but the Fearless will be the winners of CdE VIII, no matter if everyone else likes it or not.

Pisdara ties 1-1 with Montecara in first match of CdE VIII

The Pelicans tied in today's game with Montecara, showing a relatively
strong start to CdE VII in comparison to last season's tournament

Hopes ran high today as the Pelicans tied 1-1 against Montecara’s King-Killers in today’s game in Borneung, starting off Pisdara’s run in CdE VIII. The match, which would see if the Pelicans have exited their slump (as seen last season) with a switch-up in their roster.

The game, played at the Bornueng Games Stadium, saw the two small states battle it out, as fans cheered and jokingly mocked the other side. Since Pisdara’s debut in CdE VI, it has found a rather friendly rivalry with Montecara, mainly due to the two nation’s similarities. For example, one fan held a sign during the start of the match that read “Go Irrelevant Island Nation! Not you, the other one!”. Despite this friendly ribbing though, the actual match itself was fierce, with players on both sides fiercely aiming to gain an upper hand, especially with the defeat of CdE VII still so fresh.

Although the jury is still out on whether the Pelicans can make it back into the semi-finals, their tie with Montecara showed some hope, with forward Ad Mat-Ili scoring in mid-game against the King-Killers, mere minutes after Monteceran forward Tolomè Oddo scored against Pisdara. The game remained rather uneventful after that, with the Pelicans blocking advances made by Montecara and vice-versa. Coach Fabrice Moreau commented on the game, jokingly stating that “I felt that I was back at CdE VI.” There, Pisdara and Montecara also battled in the group stage, although that match resulted in a 2-4 win for the Pelicans.

The Pelicans will next match up against Arkiasis at the Bornueng Games Stadium June 1st, with Moreau hoping that that game will prove a springboard for Pisdara to return to the semi-finals and possibly even further. Arkiasis’s first match held today also led to a tie between them and the joint Kaonese-Phikamese team, with a slightly shocking 0-0 score. Once reaching as high as second place in CdE VI, Arkiasis had a extremely rough time at VII, sliding down twelve spots to 14th (just above Pisdara, who slid down ten spaces to 15th). With an inability to strengthen their position in the start of the tournament, this may be to Pisdara’s advantage in two days time.

King-Killers look for a win after drawing Pisdara 1-1

BORNEUNG, TOKSAN — Coupe d'Esquarium VIII began with a whimper rather than a bang as the King-Killers drew 1-1 in their opening match against Pisdara on Sunday.

Hopes for a Montecaran revenge tour were high after the squad's shocking defeat by the flyweight Ocelot Isles team in the last Coupe. The squad's longtime manager, Gaudènz Crésce, retired under pressure from the national football organization, which put former SDB Montecara assistant manager Fortunàto Grìpo at the helm in his place.

In an pre-game interview on Sunday, Grìpo acknowledged the high hopes for this Coupe and the large pair of shoes he was stepping into.

"Crésce was and is a legend, and always will be," he said. "He took us from nothing to being once again one of the big contenders in Esquarian football. I'm going to do my best to take his work and carry us forward into another golden age of Montecaran football."

Squad captain Vitè Agostìn joked that the new manager already has one major advantage: a lucky name.

"I don't know yet if Fortunàto is a particularly fortunate man, we'll see," he said to laughter from the press corps. "But it certainly does raise expectations."
