Novonaya, Kelssek - Out of left field, Falkasian discus hurler pulls Bronze with a distance of 67.78. With his victory, the Falkasian delegation scores its first medal to break the risk of shutout.

It took two weeks of intense competition to put the Falkasian delegation on the board, but Reidmueller demonstrated his ability to compete on-par with the world’s best athletes on the greatest stage. With four throws ranging from 67.78 to 64.19, he was able to stay in the top-running throughout the entire final set.

“I’m happy to have won bronze, but I swear the discus was weighted differently as I moved towards the end. The competition was fierce, and I had some fantastic throws at first, but there at the end it just sort of tapered off. You take a look at the distances I put up in my last two throws, and they were some of the lowest in the pack. I was throwing as hard as I could, and it just didn’t make much sense,” he told EKTV after the medal ceremony. “As I said, I’m elated to be the first medal winner for Falkasia.”

The main hallmark of this entire Olympic outing thus far has been frustration, as both Falkasian and greater Teremaran athletes have struggled to make it out of qualifying rounds with sub-par results. There is little to benchmark the current performance against however, as Falkasia has never previously participated in a Summer Olympics. It goes without saying that the core of our nation’s athletes are better adept at winter sports, so a significant learning curve is in order. However, this should not preclude them from at least remaining competitive in several events. Thus far, all athletes have fallen flat no further than the quarterfinals.

Following his weekly press conference this morning, Premier Kazyenko was approached by EKTV for comment.

“Rest assured, I along with Chairman Romanov, are working hard with our fellow counterparts involved with the Teremaran Olympic Committee to determine where our shortcomings lie so that we can make necessary corrections and hopefully change the course of our current trajectory.”

So far, the entire Teremaran delegation has won 16 medals; 2 wholly as a group and the remaining 14 by athletes representing their individual nations. Neu Engollon leads the regional pack with a total 5 medals.

-CONFIDENTIAL-

To: Foreign Minister, Greater Vakolicci Haven

Greetings,

This is to inform you of decisions which the Kelssek Government has taken in regards to a person your government has accredited as diplomatic representatives to our country.

Kelssek hosts embassies from other states in accordance with international laws and norms, with reference in particular to World Assembly resolution 22. The acceptance of diplomatic accreditation is at all times at the sole discretion of the hosting nation.

Konstantin Glavus was accredited to Kelssek as a member of the Greater Vakolicci Haven diplomatic service accompanying the delegation to the Olympic Games. Accordingly, he was issued with a diplomatic visa to allow him to enter and remain in Kelssek.

Over the course of the past week, Mr. Glavus has engaged in behaviour which contravenes acceptable norms of diplomacy and which has been determined to be detrimental to public order and the administration of justice. It is therefore my decision to revoke the recognition of his diplomatic credentials and declare him persona non grata.

As he no longer qualifies for a diplomatic visa, that has also been revoked and he is therefore required to leave Kelssek within 48 hours. If he does not do so, he will be subject to arrest and removal under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

It has also come to my attention that an office space in Neorvins is being claimed to be the chancery of the Greater Vakolicci Haven embassy. It is the norm of international diplomacy that the establishment of a chancery must be accepted by the host state. Since no such acceptance or even notification of this was ever made to the Government of Kelssek, we cannot recognize any diplomatic status being accorded to the premises. If you wish to establish an embassy in Kelssek in the future, please utilize the correct protocols for an embassy exchange.

Within Kelssek, Mr. Glavus benefits from legal immunity for actions taken in the course of his duties while holding diplomatic accreditation. He is not immune to prosecution by his own country. It is our expectation that appropriate action will be taken by the Greater Vakolicci Haven government to hold him accountable for his actions.

Sincerely,

Hon. Ciara Mayo, MP
Minister for Foreign Affairs

Mattijana Take Record Victory In Hockey Opener

Mattijana 11-0 Lisander

Mattijana humiliated Lisander in their opening match of the Olympic group stage, scoring 11 goals without reply in recording Mattijana's biggest ever international victory.

Maria Ralikova scored 4, Sophia Illicic and Katarina Zafarova 2, whilst Daniella Lusova, Daniella Samarova and Jasmin Basic also added to a bulging scoresheet.

Things got off to an ominous start as Mattijana scored on their first foray upfield, with a good run from Lusova resulting in a teasing cross that was flicked in by the stretching Ralikova. Lisander never really threatened to hit back and instead went further behind just 4 minutes later as a penalty corner was smashed into the bottom corner from the edge of the box by the captain Zafarova.

Ralikova smartly turned inside the box to add another before the first quarter break, with Lisander barely registering a pass inside the Mattijanan half, and damage limitation was clearly the main mission ahead of making serious inroads into the Mattijanan's lead.

If that was the case, they looked like succeeding. Yet 10 minutes into the second quarter, some more slick passing from the Mattijanan forwards sent Daniella Lusova through on goal. She was eventually taken down by the Lisander goalkeeper, earning a penalty stroke that was tucked away by the ever-cool Zafarova.

There was just the one goal in the second quarter, but normal service was resumed early in the second half as another run from Lusova was more selfishly directed and flicked home by Lusova herself. A 6th was added moments later as Ralikova bagged her third via another converted cross.

There was to be another goal in the half however as substitute Sophia Illicic got in on the act with a deflected finish following a pinball penalty corner.

The final quarter was to be equally chaotic, if not more so. A penalty corner was ruthlessly finished by Jasmin Basic, before Daniella Samarova finally got herself on the score sheet with a deflected finish at the far post.
Lisander were well into a period of wanting the game to end, but there would be further humiliation as Ralikova simply twisted her way through the defence before slotting a low shot under the goalkeeper. Illicic would finish things one minute from time as she got on the end if another inch-perfect Lusova cross to divert the ball into the net once again.

The result makes for ominous reading for the rest of the world's teams. Lisander were never expected to challenge for qualification, but were blown away by the quality of the Mattijanan attack and never looked close to breaching a defense that looked confident on the offensive themselves.

Alongside Lisander, Mattijana wil also face co-hosts Kelssek, Kebec, Vangaziland and Natanians and Nosts in the 6 team group, and will now be expected to qualify with even more ease than previously.
The socialist republic of Mattijana:
As if Austria, Slovenia, North-Eastern Europe and Sweden were merged together into some weird stew of a country.
through resilience, we are strong!

Upon arrival in Vekaiyu, the Cocoabo Squad were split into two teams based on their gender. Male Cocoabo on one team, Female Cocoabo on another. While all Cocoabo are treated equally back in the Cocoabo Forest and during their stay with the Turori National Team, the Researchers and Handlers from the Cocoabo Enrichment and Enhancement Project did make one procedural decision that made splitting Cocoabo by their gender an easy affair. Male Cocoabo were assigned an Odd Designation while Female Cocoabo were assigned an even designation.

Heading into the final Matchday of competition in Olympic Football, the Cocoabo Forest Female Team had yet to win a match while the Men's Team was unbeaten. That all changed in both teams final game of the qualification group stage as the Female Squad recorded their first victory - a 1-0 triumph over Velstrania. Meanwhile, the Men suffered their first and only defeat thus far, a result of the same 0-1 variety against defending Cup of Harmony champions Qasden.

Despite the change in fortunes on the final matchday, neither Team's standing position was affected by the results. Despite the victory, the Cocoabo Forest Womens team was still heading home. Meanwhile, the Men were still able to top their group and will join an elite group of 16 nations in the Mens Football Playoff Round.

While it is not currently known who the Cocoabo Forest's opponents will be, there are a number of potentially fascinating matchups. Most notably would be Cosumar, a nation well known to the Cocoabo who spent a portion of the last cycle based at the makeshift Cocoabo Ranch in Ramasouk, Cosumar. The former Azure Dragons turned Vanquishers topped Group A and will be joined by Darmen in the Playoffs - the only team to advance to the next phase despite two losses in the Group Stage.

In Division B, C and D Unified Beretania, Sargossa and Abaja all topped their group unbeaten with a single draw while the Greater Vakolicci Haven, Mattijana and West Phoenicia join them as group runners up with a single defeat.

Despite their win over the Cocoabo Forest on the final matchday, Qasden failed to advance being pipped to the second spot by Novumera. Other nations advancing were Division F, G and H winners the Teremaran Unified Team, Schottia and Kriegiersien and the Runners-up of those groups Vangaziland, Tobiasia and Bongo Johnson.

Notables to fail to advance to the playoffs include defending Gold Medal Winners the Vilitan Union who failed to advance along with another powerhouse, Electrum, from Division H. Hosts Kelssek and Vekaiyu each also fail to advance along with Valanora, Eastfield Lodge and the winless Gregoryisgodistan.

While all eyes are on the Cocoabo Football Team(s) there were other Cocoabo competing in the XII Olympiad as the Researchers and Trainers look to collect more data on how well their enrichment and enhancement activities at Cocoabo Park are progressing.

The Cocoabo seem to be making the most progress in Athletics where three Cocoabo have advanced to the Semi-Final phase or beyond. Cocoabo #58 places 10th in their Women's 1500m Semi-Final and Cocoabo #53 placed 7th in their Semi-Final run of the Men's 100m. However, the star performer of the lot thus far has been Cocoabo #54 who made it all the way to the Women's 100m final, ultimately crossing the line 5th just three one-hundreths of a second behind bronze medal winner Aggobeleldë Galonelon of Valanora.

Things are looking bright for the Cocoabo Forest but there are still critical days to come as they hang on to hope of leaving Novonay and Provinsk with the first ever Cocoabo Gold Medal.

By- Citizen Haw Haw, Rogue Blogger and Anti-Patriot

It is that time of year again my comrades that the Orwellian Kingdom of West Phoenicia rolls out the patriot ( i dare not say red. More gold and purple) carpet.
A time of patriotic parades and fevent flag waving and self obsessed cheers as millions of delusional West Phoenicians come out to display just how proud and patriotic they are of their country men and women.
The only thing missing between chants of West Phoenicia, West Phoenicia, is the bleating of 4 legs good, 2 legs bad, mantra that this crowd is used to chanting.

Yes dear friends and this time around the cheers are twice as loud and the flag waving so strong it could be harnessed for wind energy. Why you ask? Well its the Olympics of course and to add an extra dose of patriotism we are also at war.

Where shall i begin... lets start with the topic of war. West Phoenicia has officially declared war on the Hoosier Alliance. No not the whole country that would be very made PR to do that. No its against anti government freedom fighters in the nation of Hoosier Alliance.

After rigging an election to claim control over the Hoosier Alliance, President Houston has started a viscious campaign against the freedom fighters who dared to challenge his reign. A win that was rocked with scandal and intimidation and vote rigging. That stole the election from Courtney Maddison.

While West Phoenicia is quick to "stand up for the underdog" they have done an about face when our glorious leader King Glenton Gryphon-Bush II decided to visit Hoosier Alliance on a goodwill tour to congratulate the President on and i quote "Fantastic and fair election."

Our inbred polygamous leader, and i kid you not. One only needs to look at the history of the royal family to see how many times brothers and sisters married and than murdered each other to see how dysfunctional our royalhouse is. Our very own king has the epithet Philometar and Philopator. Meaning deep love and affection for his mother and father. If you read our history his mother Queen Juno was murdered allegedly by one of her daughters. And KIng Glenton Gryphon-Bush II has cheek to include Philopator after his father stole the throne from the rightful heir, the eldest half wit eldest sister of our current king. The current kings father fled only to start a civil war to take back the throne. And than to be exiled by his son our current king. Gives you a headache all the drama and intrigue? Same here. And remember our taxes keep them in their lavish lifestyle. Like the new palace the king built for his second wife for their anniversary.

While i am not a fan of regicide. Sure i want to see the monarchy topple and it wouldnt hurt if a few of our Aristocracy faced the guillotine. I would much rather see the king reduced to peasant wages. That would really make him suffer. However during this goodwill tour of the equally corrupt Hoosier Alliance, the king was nearly Assassinated. The President of Hoosier Alliance was quick to paint the culprits responsible as dirty rebels. King Glenton Gryphon-Bush II has eaten up that belief and was quick to call for a declaration of war.
Apart from some minor outbursts of disagreement and a walk out mainly from The Communist Party and The Green Party of the West Phoenician Congress most called for a declaration of war, this did include The Socialist Party and the Rainbow Party who backed the king and current government and who have given the War Cabinet a blank cheque.
West Phoenicia than called for out their military to head to Hoosier Alliance, while media coverage of the kings assassination attempt at the hands of nasty foreigners was broadcast around the clock helping to fuel the flames in the multitude of West Phoenician citizens disgusted that a foreign enemy would stoop so low when the king was on a goodwill tour.
Currently it stands that 90% of the nation support the war against Hoosier Alliance terrorists and any nation that would offer than assistance.
To add to the injustice West Phoenicia has bullied some of our allies especially the Theocracy of Annixe Christos, The Empire of Morning Rose Isles and The Empire of North Ivory to help them in this injust war.
Meanwhile West Phoenicians watch endless news footage of all the help our military is doing to assist the democratic nation, with not one mention of why these freedom fighters are doing what they are doing in the name of justice and fair democratic elections.

The King and his first wife Queen Angelique Baroda-Bush in between gala hosting for the upper elite of Hoosier Alliance send tearful messages back to us all, that we are doing the right thing and we must keep up the good fight to help free Hoosier Alliance from the iron grip of terrorism. Our own Minister of Defence Major Aaron Townsville when he is not attending parties with his bourgeoisie pig wife, his mistress and his wife's lover is across our television screens calling for West Phoenicians to stand up and be patriotic. Unfortunately the masses are flocking to outdo each other to prove how patriotic they are, whilst informing on citizens who are less than enthusiastic to the Un-West Phoenician Committee.

War is not the answer. We need to seek peace with the freedom fighters and aid their cause. We need to decrease our military and move the money to much more worthy areas like Public Schools and Hospitals. We need to repeal the let them eat cake act which breeds Segregation of the poor and give them the same opportunity as the rich.

And we need to stop funding our Olympics team. Which brings me to my other point of what has gripped our nation into nationalistic pride for the last few weeks and will continue to the games have finished and West Phoenicia tires of the welcome home parades and parties for those worthy enough to have won and the endless talk shows for those who failed to place promising they will do better next time.
24hr Olympics sports coverage. Large open areas allocated wide screens so the masses can herd together and watch as our athletes of the body compete with other bourgeoisie attention seeking nations of the world to battle it out of a small bit of gold, silver or bronze while sipping lattes and champagne and pigging out on all sorts of food never caring about the poor and hungry around them.

How self obsessed can a nation be to parade its athletes out for the world to see in the hopes they will bring back some pretty trinket. As it stands West Phoenicia currently has obtained 9 gold. 9 silver and 10 bronze. They aim for a minimum of 35. The citizens are lapping up the wins and the celebration parties have been endless.

Two little show ponies helped build that tally up today Natanya Sydney in the Heptathlon and Jimmy Saigon in the men's Individual all round. And no i didn't watch the events, but they were the top stories today and repeated all day.
Heaven forbid we live in a world where a child die every minute or another nation has fallen into war. No Natanya Sydney, the elitist pig had to make top headlines, just because she was faster, and able to throw further than the pig behind her.
That gold win, sent our nation into a frenzy, but so what? Its not going to help out poor and suffering. At most it will give Miss Sydney her 15 minutes of fame and more money in her overflowing bank account.
And a shame on the leader of the Animal Justice Party, Senator Amanda Chatterman who was front and centre at the Equestrian events. No not protesting the abuse of the horses but cheering our Equestrian team on.

And what more is there anything more pathetic than seeing one of our athletes or the hundreds of others from around the world crying or throwing a fit. All because their dream of winning didn't come to bear fruits.
How bout crying for the victims of plagues or natural disasters. Our nation and nations like ours are truly sick. When they hold up athletes to be some gods in need of worship, while we neglect the true heroes of our nations. Heroes like me who dare speak out against the greed and hypocrisy and want to see a society where everyone is equal and not a society of flag waving, sport mad, war mongering brain washed fools. West Phoenicia needs to pull their athletes from any future games. Sport stars are not heroes, they are over funded attention seeking whores.

I hope more people will start to shun these elitist games, and our do nothing reality stars and sold out preachers and senators and fight for what is right. Turn off your televisions and act now!!! Or forever be the sheep you are.....

[u]Official communication of the Mazhrit's department for foreign communication, Sondestadt, Free and Holy nation of Velstrania; an autonomous province of the Greater Vakolicci Haven[/b]
Origin: Maacurin nos Belaurid, secretary for foreign communications, Velstrania
On behalf of: Diane Stevenson, Senior secretary of state for foreign relations, greater vakolicci haven

To: the hon. Ciara Mayo;

It is with great regret that I read the message which has been forwarded on to me by the Honourable Diane Stevenson, senior secretary of state for foreign relations concerning your nations decision to revoke the diplomatic recognition of lord Konstantin Glavus, a Havenic special representative in good standing within the Havenic diplomatic service.
As you may be aware, the Havenic diplomatic service is licensed by special arrangement to act as the voice and the representatives of the free and holy nation of Velstrania as a Havenic autonomous province, a license which also extends to the Free Kingdom of Celeria due to the same arrangement. Therefore, it is my duty to inform you that due to your decision, Velsturmen athletes, tourests and spectators now have very little diplomatic representation in Kelssek, leaving them at increased risk of prosecution.

It does not take much intuition to recognise that wherever they go, Velsturmen are generally at risk of prosecution. The average height of a person in Velstrania is nearly 8 feet, leaving many police forces and justice ministries to see the Velsturmen people as the aggressors in situations they did not start; they allow the size of the Velsturman to take priority in their minds and imagine that they startd fights and altercations in which they were not in fact the aggressor. For this reason, I really do not feel confident in allowing Velsturmen to go through the Olympics without such representation.

On the other hand, I can understand how Lord Glavus' actions contravened your expectation of how a diplomat shall behave. Though of course it is likely not within my official powers to do so, I can confirm that Lord Glavus is a very close friend of the arrested Lucien Berinu, and was likely not acting rationally, by his own admission. It must also be pointed out that in normal situations the accused would have seen a havenic consular representative, rather than a Havenic special representative which as I am sure you are aware is a rank above a standard national ambassador, reserved for tense or crisis situations.
Honoured minister, I will be blunt for I fear I have to. Our Haven is not doing particularly well when it comes to special representatives, if I must tell you, we have precisely 3 of them. Two of these representatives are already out performing other missions in service of the haven, the third is Lord Glavus. Our Haven, as we have no ambassadorial presence currently in Kelssek would find it very difficult to replace Lord Glavus if you were determined on removing him from the country; it is therefore something which concerns us greatly.
I am more than willing, in person, to act as a peacebroker between the Kelssekian foreign minister and Lord Glavus himself. Given appropriate recognition I am prepared to fly out to Kelssek from Sondestadt without delay for an informal meeting between myself, you or your representative, and Lord Glavus. Though I understand your concern, please understand that mine is based only out of genuine concern for those of the Velsturmen people currently residing in Kelssek, as well as the wider Haven as a whole.

With hope,
Maacurin nos Belaurid

Kalosia u l'Olimpiade
Official coverage of the XII Olympic Games by Lë Punto Kuotidianu

Will We Return Empty-Handed? Increasing Pessimism from Kalosian Supporters

With the elimination of Nathan Zola and Rian Kruž from the knockout round of Badminton — Men's Singles today, only 2 Kalosian athletes remain in the running. However, it appears that to many people, this simply means that 2 of our athletes are only yet to lose.

We, the LPK editorial team, have noticed an increase in social media posts critical of Kalosia's participation at the ongoing Games, or at least the government's handling of it. One such post, which went viral, called for an increase in government funding for sports and participation in international sporting events and argued that it was important for the nation's morale and pride.

We at Lë Punto Kuotidianu would be in favour of additional government support towards domestic sport, as that means we would be able to serve you, our beloved readers, with higher quality domestic news and a wider range of sports coverage. We have also reached to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation but have yet to respond to our inquiry.

If the Kalosian internet sphere is anything to go by, fans will continue to give their support to our remaining athletes yet to compete. However, they will likely not be surprised if our delegation comes home empty-handed.

Yarden Tennfjord misses last second three, fails to send game to Overtime

With Darmen's chances of Basketball Gold hinging on whether or not Yarden Tennfjord's last second three point shot hit its mark, two entire nations, plus multitudes of others across the multiverse, held their breath as the ball arched towards the basket. Tennfjord's three pointer was needed to send the game into overtime, giving each team five more minutes to settle who was the better of the two.

The shot missed.

Balls.

O'Sullivan substitution made at halftime. Cardoso and Lyne brought into match at 78th minute.

Freud needs to wear better cleats. Was slipping way too much.

Overall, team performance was extremely poor. We were very lucky to finish match with a deficit of only one goal.

Chances Come, Chances Go

José Dorado reports;

Sport is not a cheap undertaking. Just being here in Kelssek and Vekeiyu is costing millions of Dineras. In addition to the hundreds of athletes within the delegation there are the coaches, the medical teams, the equipment staff and the equipment they’re responsible for. From swimsuits to horses, everything needs looking after. It’s a costly enterprise. And at some point that cost has to be counted. In amongst the crowd at last night’s Athletics Sargossan TV cameras picked up an interested spectator as Sports Minister Eduardo Rubio was spied seated next to Olympic Authority chief Danté Tostado. After every Olympic cycle it’s traditional for the OAS and Ministry to sit down with the individual sports federations and discuss funding for the next four years. There may be a nervous wait at the Sargossan Athletics Authority, currently a recipient of a healthy percentage of the available funds, as the nation’s finest continue to struggle to make an impact at these Games.

Admittedly two further medals have been added to the tally following Eugenio Rosales’ third place in the Men’s Hammer Throw and a wonderful gold for Esma Abar in the Women’s Triple Jump but normal service resumed as yet more medal chances slipped away. Maitea Ceja had led going into the final of the Women’s Shot Put but could only manage ninth in the final itself. Maria Obregón got the fans excited as her final effort, to the naked eye at least, looked to have got her amongst the medals. But sadly, although a new national record, it was a handful of centimetres shy of a podium place. Like Ceja, Alba Cazalla had looked in great form in qualifying for the final of the Women’s 100m. But again, with medals on the line, the form went out the window and Cazalla finished the final in last place. Teammate María Paula Carballo had crashed out in the semis.

Concetta Sevilla put up a good fight in the Heptathlon, coming second in the concluding 800m to finish ninth overall. While in the Decathlon José Cicerón was the best placed Sargossan in nineteenth, in an event in which we’ve never had great pedigree. Similarly the 5,000m options are pretty slim, both Rogerio Valle and Felipe Alvarado failing to trouble the qualifiers. But there was a crumb of comfort from the Women’s Pole Vault contest in which both Olivia Lucera and Débora Sarmiento reached the final with just a single fault to their respective names.

It was a busy day for the Badminton practitioners but also a good day for the team of Gustavo Jiménez and José María, who recorded their second win of the group stage against the home (but not this home) duo of Yeslatrovi and Besateru. They’re now up into third place in Group 1 with just a single match to play. In Group 6, in which everyone is beating everybody else, Omar Navarro and Sergio Iglesias’ third defeat in four still hasn’t entirely ended their dream of advancing. But they will be requiring a minor miracle. The Singles events were less kind to Jiménez and María, with the duo finishing bottom of their respective groups. In the Mixed the team of Omar Navarro and Romina Ocampo put up a good fight against the Darmeni pairing of Andrew Schindler and Mia Lovel, but are still looking for a first win. As are Sergio Iglesias and Débora Madrid, who suffered a trouncing in their match.

In its history Sargossa has somehow contrived to accumulate seven medals in Canoeing events. In fact Canoeing is level with Shooting as our fourth most successful discipline. But the last of those medals was quite some years ago, a bronze in the Games of the Eighth Summer Olympiad. Since then we've not even come close. So take a bow Maria Arcé. In the Women’s C-1 500m Sprint Arcé actually won her heat before coming third in a pretty quick semi-final. She may be in the final as a fastest loser but her overall time was third fastest of all the qualifiers. If she can find that form in the final she will be in definite medal contention.

As is Carlos Carretero in the Men’s Golf. He shot a second round seventy to give him the clubhouse lead on day two and keep him right in the mix for a medal, two shots behind overall leader Pakle Spakle, who had a much trickier time on day two. Nelson Torres was tied for eighth and Alex Clementé tied for sixteenth as the contest reached its halfway stage. They’re now twenty first and twenty third respectively.

But a major medal hope fell away in the Women’s Beach Volleyball. Mia Abasto and María Paula Costa had looked in imperious form in the group stage but had a torrid first set against Siiala Soara and Candi Apretti in the last sixteen, losing 21 – 10 in little time. The second set was much closer but a 22 – 20 defeat sent them crashing out. Danika Candela and Cierra Zayas endured a real battle against the Taeshani team of Hanna Torres and Grace Tijuana, but came through 15 – 11 in the decider to keep slim chances alive in a competitive tournament. They now face the dangerous duo of Xana Cash and Linzy Kaye, who eliminated home favourites Trottier and Lukowicz.

FSIS Blacksite 1-A
Somewhere off the coast of Falkasia…

The enormous facility rocked gently to and fro. Despite the low hum of air conditioning, a sullen creak echoed down and around the bulkhead halls. Dr. Thibideau paced much like the room he was in, up one wall and back down the other. This he repeated over and over again. Arms were folded behind his back, hands clasped together, and his his darting left and right like a madman paranoid of being detected.

"Ja... I vill give zee Director vhat he vants!" He mumbled under his breath, his distinct accent taking true form. "I vill make a tracksuit made of money!"

He halted abruptly and stood up straight. His head jolted forward and with squinting eyes a vision came to him.

"Ja ja ja. It vill be glorious! First we take zee Dinars and stitch them with velcro into zee tracksuit. Zin we unleash a runner into zee mass public. As soon as zee people realize zee money is detachable, it will be a straight shot to victory!"

With the same expediency, he turned on a dime and marched out of the hallway.

"Grigor! Grigor!" He called, taunting his lab assistant. "Your life is in danger!"

Passing through a bulkhead corridor, barely illuminated with only a single blue-white flood light, the Doctor emerged into a much larger, cavernous even, work-space. Discarded experiments literred all four corners, alongside a myriad of partially operational prototypes and cluttered workbenches for various trades inter-spaced the center. Grigor rapidly revealed himself from behind a lathe machine, currently undergoing some form of automated operation.

"Doctor Thibideau, it has been for months... if not years? Always my life is in danger, but yet here I am. Why must you continue to use me as a crash dummy? Don't you have enough mannequins?"

He paused and rolled his eyes. The Doctor's face was blank as he passed Grigor towards one of the workbenches.

"Or has the Director pulled all of your funding? Is that it? Are testing dummies too expensive now? So you just enlist the help of graduate engineering students like myself to risk life and limb in hopes that someday we get hired so we can then do the same to our graduate students?"

"Grigor... I have an idear. You vill think its... uh... vhat's zee saying? Higher-brained, ja? Ja! Higher-brained! It is crazee! But I vill make a tracksuit out of money. Falkasian Dinars! Sink of it Grigor! An army of mindless monetary zombies chasing after our homeland's athletic hero! Sink of it Grigor! Sink of it! How can anyone hope to fight the masses of mad consumerism? Nein! Zey cannut! For ve vill be victorious!"

Grigor approached tentatively, making sure to thoroughly inspect the area before entering. It was a small clearing among the larger wood of machinery. A simple desk and two spartan chairs were the only accouterments. A single fluorescent tube was perched precariously overhead, affixed to the gently rocking ceiling with a single pair of wires at either end. With cautious steps,Grigor quickly plopped down in a chair and backed up as close as he could to one of the machines which constituted a wall for the open-air room. The stench of leaking hydraulic oil was almost overpowering.

"So the Director zeroed your budget?" He asked again, reaffirming his point.

"Nein!" Dr. Thibideau screamed, slamming his fist into the desk. "Nein! Nein! Nein1 He did not zero my budget! He vants me to make zee Olympic team superior to all of Teremara and zee vorld! And I sink I have it Grigor! A tracksuit covered in money! Vhat could possibly go wrong?"

"Well... for starters..."

"Nein!" The Doctor injected, cutting his assistant off. "Zher vill be no denials! Zis is by far zee greatest idear I have ever had! It vill be glorious Grigor! Glorious!"

Grigor leaned back as far as he could, crossing his arms. What happened next had been repeated hundreds of times prior. There was no putting the genie back in the bottle.

"Vhat we need is one million Dinars! Ja! One million!" He turned to face Grigor, his face beat-red in anguished brilliance. "Grigor! How much money do ve have left in zee budget?"

"The Director zeroed our budget." The graduate student flippantly replied for a third time.

"Nein! Impossible!"

"Take a look for yourself Doctor," Grigor stated flatly, pointing towards the single monitor on the desk. "Pull up the government account. I don't know... things may have changed since I checked five minutes ago, but it looks like we've been cleaned out."

The Doctor's face dropped as he logged into the web portal.

"We have 176 Dinars? 176 Dinars?! 176 Dinars!! Since when has government ever been so efficient? Mein gott I vish for zee old days where you could stuff your pockets vit zee money and it would take zee police days to just realize you had defected!"

Grigor shrugged.

"Ohkee... Ohkee..." Thibideau calmed himself. "Ohkee... Plan B. Grigor! I need you to withdraw all of zee remaining funds from zis account. Ve vill make zee tracksuit vit 176 Dinars! And it vill be zee most glorious budget Dinar-store tracksuit of victory zee world has ever seen! All of our competition vill be blown avay by our superior frugality and cost savings!"

An accurate look at some of the nations on the medal table. Medals - the currency of the Olympics

Image
Kelssek and Vekaiyu
With great power comes great responsibility and then criticism.
However the great investment in time and resources is rewarded with the home advantage. If your athletes meet a decent athlete or team from the host nations: Good luck.
Kelssek is also the most successful nation at the Olympics and that won't change after these edition.

Image
Quebec
Is a successful Kingdom now

Image
The Atlae Isles
You may not have heard from this nation before but it seems to have secretly bred world class athletes on its Isles

Image
Gregoryisgodistan
A rising Sports Powerhouse, despite the media coverage fully occupied with the football world cup and the President possibly with torturing people and animals either openly or in his basement.
If you ever wondered about strange athletes names, like the Kriegiersiens e.g.: Gregs guys and gals top that.

Image
West Phonecia
Has a healthy, versatile sports program. Interestingly enough only now their medal count comes to a healthy level, too.

Image
Electrum
Is one of the greatest sport nations, but beware if they had to choose the sports for the Olympics. Although some may say that the water at this Olympics already felt like honey, deadly assaults are not uncommon and after tasting the food in these nations starving yourself to death is a winning move.

Image
Taeshan
Once covered the Olympics with a well known radio station. Now it only plays old modern music without audio. Taeshan is somehow still successful.

Image
Paripana Sporting Council
Is some sort of a conglomerate of island states bound into a Sports Federation. With that they have a good pool to fish athletes out of it to reach gold and commercial highs.

Image
Mattijana
Still optimistically seeking for medals like a quiet fridge salesman for clients in the arctic. Well, a pretty successful salesman as it seems

Image Image
Eastfield Lodge
You may know them from Soccer or Racing but have you seen them in other sports? Your athletes may now have. On the Podium.

Image
Sargossa
Another Powerhouse in sports. Until now not quite with the results of the old times yet but spotting with trained eye some not self caused blunders in the lineups and competitions. A problem that is found can be solved.

Image
Greater Vakolicci Haven
If not destroying spaceships in a Blitz the GVH wins medals at the Olympics

Image
Britonensia
Remembers in some aspects of Kriegiersien. Believing to earn more then they already have because of their inflated team and actions, not realizing the low skill of the majority of the athletes and dreaming tearful of more medals.

Image
Valanora
Another big name who hasn't won as much Gold medals as he has won Soccer World Cups yet.

Image
Cosumar
Is hosting the Soccer World Cup. Who has time for other things in that case anyway? They also seem to dislike Gold.

Image
Liventia
Another big player. Would possess even more medals then the plenty they already have, if they wouldn't split up from time to time. Even with a much smaller delegation and not hosting on this occasion, they have already somehow won a good amount of medals.

Centralis Herald - Comment - Reece Duffy

Royal Kingdom of Quebec: An ideal model to emulate

In my last editorial I talked about how too many nations were putting their athletes under too much pressure to win medals, lest they face the dreaded cuts that their respective heartless nations always threaten. There is something that bothers me about this power dynamic: athletes are expected to give it their all to compete for the honour of representing their nation, but at the same time, those very same nations that the athletes are contributing to are coercing and threatening them to do well, or else they're not going to receive any help at all. It smacks more of abuse and exploitation than genuine help and concern for their athletes.

There is, however, one nation that has bucked the trend so far, and that's the Royal Kingdom of Quebec. Despite their penchant for partying being the cause of consternation by some, they are a nation that genuine cares for their own athletes. One of the things that the Quebecois do well that I think we should emulate is the open communication between the leadership of the Olympic Committee and their athletes. Indeed, in a newsletter sent to all of the athletes written by His Imperial Majesty, Jacques IX, he told his athletes that they were 'never alone' and that the RQOC was fully committed to their athlete's health and wellbeing. A simple move such as the introduction of a weekly newsletter celebrating the accomplishments of our athletes would definitely be a step in the right direction. Also, this could be where the EOC could publicise its mental health efforts more effectively as it is known that the take-up rate of health services is quite low.

Another thing we can emulate from the Quebecois is to hold fun events to make our athletes happier. Yes, the Olympics are a serious time, but athletes need to let their hair down every once in a while to stay grounded and down to earth. I wouldn't go as far as providing marijuana and alcohol to our athletes, but we should consider holding fun events like video game nights and ballroom dancing nights to really give an atmosphere of fun. It's known through Centralis University Sports Institute research that athletes tend to perform far better when they are happier. Perhaps when children around Electrum see how much fun our athletes are having, especially while they are competing, this might just inspire them to become an Olympian themselves. Recently, when Hunter Roberts said that he didn't find tennis fun anymore, that it was only a job, and that he would discourage other kids from doing tennis, there was some righteous indignation from the ELTA (Electrum Lawn Tennis Association) who called him ungrateful. It's this kind of scenario that sends the wrong message to kids that once you're an athlete, you're trapped into constant training and competition against other athletes with no respite, or no release.

One final takeaway we can get from our Quebecois counterparts, and indeed, the entire point of this editorial, is to value our athletes more. They are people who have put their lives, careers and education on hold for our benefit, for the glory of the nation. I think it is fair to say that athletes across the multiverse deserve a bit more respect than what they receive now, and they certainly deserve more respect from certain other nations. From small, simple gestures like special tokens awarded to athletes who come close to creating a safe, happy and healthy environment for their sportsmen and sportswomen, there is no one who treats their athletes better like the Quebecois. And it shows too. They are performing very well so far in these Olympic Games, they are sitting in third place just behind the hosts, which just goes to show that the carrot, not the stick, is a better motivator for athletes. This is proven time and time again by their results.

Somewhere amongst our obsession for medals (and gold in particular) we lost it. It's time that we bring it back. Treat our athletes well, and we will reap the rewards. It's as simple as that.

Day 15-Hockey and Heptathlon Make Headlines

Day 15 of the Olympic games was one of the biggest yet, seeing the opening day of the Hockey competition. Mattijana's women were first in action, recording a stunning 11-0 win. The men also won their first group stage game, beating Velstrania 5-0.
Goals from Andrez Dragovic, Sami Turnakiov, Mattijo Hosiner and a Toni Muller double handed Mattijana a comfortable victory as Velstrania never got close to matching the quality shown by their more ambitious opponents.
After a tough 4th for the women and a quarter-final exit for the men in Aeropag, both teams are looking in good shape to improve and mount a serious challenge, although there are still 4 group matches to play before the knockouts begin.
Alongside Velstrania, Mattijana's men will face tougher opposition in Schottia, Elejamie, the Vilitan Union and hosts Vekaiyu. Yet dispatching the probable group losers with this level of ease is still a positive sign for the men in green.

Multi-discipline events yield unexpected medals

Mattijana ensured their run of medal-winning days continues as Andriy Maric claimed bronze in the decathlon and Sophia Garras bronze in the heptathlon.

Maric had cemented his place at the right end of the leaderboard after day 1, sitting 5th after a third in the long jump and a second in the high jump, his two strongest events. Andreas Decic's top 10 performance in the 400m is under scrutiny however, as Mattijanan athletes are not usually entered into 400m events on account of it's use as a criminal punishment. Maric was a less conspicuous 17th.
Things didn't start so well for Garras in the heptathlon. She managed a solid 12th in the 100m hurdles, but was overshadowed by a 4th from teammate Tanisa Ezere. It was Ezere who continued to press for a Mattijanan in the high jump, coming a brilliant second with Garras a more average 20th out of the 72 competitors.
She hit back in the Shot put however, with a brilliant throw of 16.98 metres threatening to win her the discipline until West Phoencia's Natanya Sydney threw a massive 17.30 metres, far clear of the rest of the field.

The more supple Ezere managed a decent 12th in that event, one of her least-preferred. But things began to slip in the 200m as fellow Mattijanan Thea Misic took a surprise win. Ezere was 20th, with Garras even more inconspicuous in 24th.
Despite slipping in the final two events, Ezere had still done enough to secure 2nd spot after the first day. Garras, who had already well overlooked as a medal prospect by all but the most optimistic Mattijanan, was still a solid 11th.

It was Garras who started best in the long jump on day 2, picking up 6th place. Despite averting disaster, Ezere was a fairly disappointing 15th in her favourite event, and slipped further in the 800m, coming 18th. Garras however was well on the rise and a late surge of energy saw her pick up an excellent 4th place.

That 4th was enough to sneak Garras into the top three, albeit only by 5 points over an understandably gutted Mikava Nulasina from Vilita. The tight nature of the top 10 had fallen unkindly for Ezere, who finished 12th, but the moment was undoubtedly Sophia Garras's, who will be presented with her medal in the ceremony tomorrow.

Meanwhile, in the decathlon, there were still 5 events to settle. The first was fairly poor by Maric's standards, as he came 18th in the 110m hurdles. The discus wasn't any better, Maric coming 19th.

However there was always optimism for the Mattijanan with his best event, the pole-vault, fast approaching. A comfortable series of early vaults got him to a one-on-one with Taeshan's Tyler Yokie at 5.60 metres.
Both athletes failed to beat the bar, settling for 1100 points each, but both were lifted before the Javelin throw. Maric hauled himself inside the top 10 with a throw of 68.56 metres.

Tyler Yokie followed up his vault with a 4th and a win in the 1500, seeing him to an excellent victory. But Maric also ensured a strong finish, coming 5th in the final event to take 3rd by 114 points.

The two bronzes are Mattijana's first medals in the decathlon/heptathlon and add to an impressive set of results for the athletics team, following Finja Mikelson's 800m gold, Mathilde Leku's hgh jump victory and a silver for Danil Klamaric in the 3000m steeplechase.

Silver for Djudsak

Florian Djudsak added another silver to Mattijana's collection of 9 with a good performance under pressure in the 50m 3 positions rifle. Carrying a score of 1179 from the qualifying rounds, he added a further 99.4 points to solidify his second place ahead of Nick de Rege who was just 0.2 points behind, after winning a third place shoot off. Soldier EUY9ASDY9SA8DYF from Gregoryisgodistan slipped slightly in the final round, but a dominant qualification performance meant that his rivals were unable to overturn his lead.
The socialist republic of Mattijana:
As if Austria, Slovenia, North-Eastern Europe and Sweden were merged together into some weird stew of a country.
through resilience, we are strong!

URSA Training Centre, Linville, Lisander.
July 24, Afternoon.

"Ladies and gentlemen, as we told you at the previous meeting, we sent scouts to Vekayu, to better understand the environment in which we will be in. We have received your reports and we have two news, one good and one bad."
- Victor Sauer, Manager of the Olympic Rugby Committee, opened the last meeting before the trip.

"Bad." Said the captain of the Lilies, Anaëlle Florian.

"Agree, the bad news first." Agreed Gaetan Latta, captain of the Irises.

"Very well." Sauer continued, "We will not go straight to Vekayu Our scouts have indicated that Vekayu does not have a satisfactory Rugby structure We do not find signs of friendly clubs Their Rugby seems to be an underwater variety so it will not be possible for us to do our preparation there. You must then deduce that the good news is ... "

"That we will stay in Kelssek until the start of the tournament, renting some local, university or a Superliga team, with whom the LRU hopes to make friendlies? Predictable." Eran Lasses had deduced exactly what would happen.

"As expected from the walking encyclopaedia of the Irises Sevens, and then Lasses, besides breathing rugby 24 hours a day and sighing for Miss Longobardi, what else do you do?" The captain tried to make fun of Lasses.

"Latta, please, this is a meeting ... Between me and Amábile has nothing to do with our subject here." The fly-half fled that conversation.

"Ah, I know ..." Gaetan Latta grinned from ear to ear and looked at the Lilies. "Girls, can you say something about?" Some of them replied with a smile, others even lent themselves to it. Kiara Wells, Loosehead Prop and the youngest ( 17-year-old ) of the delegation, responded roughly.

"Holy Mother of ..." sighed "My schoolmates are more mature than some of you. Sauer, please, conclude."

"It's like Lasses said. We are going to Novonaya tonight, and tomorrow I hope we have our confirmation about the venue. The committee has not yet confirmed where we are going to train, and we are still waiting for a response from the Kelssek Rugby Federation. Are up until the 31st of July, you are up to August 2. We are also looking for friendlies for both teams. We are trying to play sevens and tens games, but if we can not, we will call some players to form a team of fifteen."

Kam Hyun Su hoping for a medal tonight!

With the Olympics heading to day 16, Togonistan is still yet to open their medal tally. However, there is a reason to bring our hopes up now! Taekwondo, pretty much the only event where we have a legit chance for a medal, is on the schedule for next following days. In fact, Kam Hyun Su is hoping to open our medal tally this very evening, as he is preparing for Taekwondo–Men’s 58 kg event. We had a chance to send in our reporter to make a little interview with Kam, so enjoy!

Reporter: ''So, Togonistan is hoping for a medal from you! How good do you think your chances are?

Kam Hyun Su: ''Pretty decent. Last night had a lot of practice, feeling I'm in a good shape.''

Reporter: ''Well, the competition is tough, do you believe you are mentally ready for a battle?''

Kam Hyun Su: ''Yeah well, i am nervous of course, but I am ready.''

Reporter: ''Okay, good luck for you tonight!''

Kam Hyun Su: ''Thanks!''

Taekwondo–Men’s 58 kg will be broadcast LIVE on Ultrasports 1 tonight. Stay tuned for more information.

Tommy picked up the stone and through it, causing Martin to duck his head instinctively; it wasn't aimed at him though, but at the wall where it made a satisfying bang...far less satisfying was the hard and most definitely not sane look that filled his friends eyes. Tommy was preparing to throw another stone, or did this class as a rock...Martin wasn't sure, and he had no way of stopping it, no way at all. The two of them looked at each other, Martin's eyes soft and calm like they always were when facing down one of Tommy's outbursts, Tommy's eyes glaring deep into him...why the fuck was that? Martin thought that it was meant to be that people with messed up minds who weren't really sure why they were doing what they doing tended to look away and not make eye contact for long; Tommy always did though, glaring daggers into his friends heart, something he wished he could say no longer troubled him...but then again Martin wasn't a liar, especially not to himself.
"You fucking beat me!" came the scream of Tommy, universally agreed to be the worlds worst loser through the still and empty night; a few birds flew away at the racket, but apart from that their was no response at all. Certainly Martin wasn't responding, in fact he hadn't even moved a muscle with his dark eyes still looking kindly at his old friend and his face still in a smile. "I beat you," he finally answered softly, not looking angry.

Sooner or later, the two friends would hug and make up. They'd go for a few drinks, play numerous competitions like that; but Martin Shearman wouldn't forget. Forever, like the time before and the time before that and the 20 times before that, he'd remind himself day after day not to trust Tommy Brun; he'd remind himself, and forget his own advice. And some day, it'd kill him; some day probably soon

Meet the Giant, the Present and the Future : Riley Jeon-Keane

Riley Jeon-Keane, 26, takes a free throw against Kelssek in Semifinals match for 2030 Novonaya and Provinsk Games. In a 77-103 loss, Jeon-Keane scored 27 and had 19 rebounds.

Jeremy Patois

PROVINSK, VEKAIYU - Riley Jeon-Keane is arguably the greatest Quebecois basketball present.

The Kingston Enterprise centre earned her second-straight QWBL Most Valuable Player award and a Game 7 of QWBL Final appearance last season, and this offseason Jeon-Keane is doing even better. RJK-47, standing at 6'9" and 268 lbs tall, has taken the Novonaya and Provinsk Olympic Games by storm and has become the new face of the Quebecois women's basketball thanks to her phenomenal BQ, fabulous fundamentals and excellent use of god-gifted physique.

As the Quebecois National Team faces Qasden tonight in Provinsk, the 8-Blocks-Per-Second met up with Jeon-Keane in advance about her life, commitment as a basketball player, her continuous olympic adventure and any advice he has for her hometown junior Colby Whitsworth before she tries to complete the olympic games with a bronze medal on her neck, too.

Check out the full interview below:

JP : Hello, it's an honour to have you here, even with all the busy hours of practice you've had and whatnot.
RJK : No worries. I'm always down to talk to media when asked, especially because it's what I'm tasked to do. Not all of my teammates are comfortable with media, so in times like this olympics, I embrace taking more responsibilities.

JP : How have things been going so far in your olympics?
RJK : Pretty good. As a team we've worked very well in both scoring and defence. Our team play, a particular forte especially with our guards, have worked very well all the way to the semifinals and this time we didn't have to play Electrum. (laughs)As for semifinals, they didn't go the way we wanted it to be. It was a very tough loss, where we couldn't play defence and allowed 19 three-pointers alone and whatnot, but we'll accept what has happened and move on from it.

Beginnings
Born as the eldest of four children between Danielle Jeon, a curator, and Leon Keane, high school teacher, Riley Jeon-Keane grew up in a thoughtful, quiet environment with her mind elevated. So taking up basketball in such an atmosphere wasn't easy, but it was with this that Jeon-Keane was going to thrive in the basketball world.

JP : When and how did you start playing basketball?
RJK : I started playing basketball when I was in grade 7. Growing up, I was always the biggest of my class so my friends, when they did not have enough people to play 3-on-3 or full-scale basketball, would often bring me to play. I wasn't the fastest nor the most experienced of players but sooner than later got hang of the game. And that's when Ms. Balzer, my middle school team's coach, suggested I pick up the sport and play for the grade 7 season. So I did, picked up 24 points and 8 rebounds in my first season...and then the rest became history.

JP : So you've had a pretty strong start in first place. Now to go back to your home life, you've mentioned that you grew up in an intellectual atmosphere. Did it affect you much when you're playing basketball?
RJK : Not really....both my parents played hockey growing up, and my maternal grandparents were both athletes, grandma a long-distance track athlete and grandpa a handballer. so I was very aware of how the athletics world was like, and they let me know very well of expectations and how not everybody was lucky like I was. I was too little back then, but this probably helped me with my team play as I grew older.

JP : So you dominated the middle school scene and went onto Erskine Collegiate, a school with strong academic reputation but also a long list of olympian alumni. Erskine's never known as a basketball school until you arrived. Thoughts and recollections on your time there?
RJK : I remember entering Erskine in 2016 without much expectation. I went to my local school, the one my mum went and both my parents teaching and whatnot, so it wasn't like I wasn't aware of it. Went there at least 200 times before even going there anyway, so they knew I was going to come. But in some ways, I was kinda looking to change somthing. Before 2016 Erskine's always had a historically consistent women's basketball program, but it never shone often because while making past the city championship region was one thing, winning the provincials was the other. Expectations were down because the farthest we got was quarterfinals in 2008 and 2012, so the frustration was there and guys were down. Fortunately as I arrived and improved, so did everybody because we knew that we could win and beat guys we'd have lost to in past like Northbrook, 100-64, 88-53, etc. 3 OFSAAs have followed and that's when we've truly overcome the hurdle, I realised. Paving a new tradition after another.

JP : After high school and a high-profile recruitment war, you have committed to Queen's to study instrumental music and computer science specifically. How did you end up picking there?
RJK : It was pretty simple, actually. When I was looking for my programs, I was looking for a program where I knew I could pursue both programs, but especially music because not all music programs have instructors in Bassoon. So it came down to Farrer, Kingston, Queen's, USC, Bishop's and Saguenay. All schools have promised me scholarships and benefits and whatnot, but what it came down to was the promise by then-Gaels Coach (Craig) Harkness, who told me that "I still had much to develop, so let's work on process". Since I was very aware of my limitations and whatnot back then, I knew he was saying the truth...and signed the day after.

JP : And there you thrived as well, leaving Cornwall as the Gaels' all-time scoring and rebounds leader. What's your favourite recollection from your time playing for Erskine or Queen's?
RJK : I have to say...winning the national championship in my freshman year. Still can't forget that feeling when the buzzer sounded, as I hugged the basketball and cried to the ground. Landing the final shot, to bring the Silver Bear to my hometown, to coach Harkness (Craig Harkness, Queen's Head Coach of 43 years, passed away in mid-season after a heart attack) and his grave....with the best group of players I've played. It's probably the memory I'll remember the farthest into this millenia.

Winning Mentality
Riley Jeon-Keane, on any level, is a winner. She's won championships and/or medals in almost every teams she's played, and isn't afraid to do all the work for it. But what makes this 6-foot-9, 265-pound centre such a formidable, confidence-boosting machine? It's of many factors, involving her habits, focus and dedication to the game.

JP : What's going through your head when you're going to take a shot that could decide a game?
RJK : What flows through my brain when I'm going to take this shot is...let's just get to it. When I was much younger I was always nervous of taking these shots, especially because of increased responsibility such big-time shots can bring in you. However, as I would play more and be more comfortable in the mould of an ace, I've come to accept the responsibility and just take it as I go. It is, after all, that having ultimate confidence in making that shot can do.

JP : Are you ever afraid of anything?
RJK : On the court, not at all. I try to have confidence and have a belief in myself. The only thing I'm worried of is my own health, and that's a valid concern that all athletes have when playing.

JP : And as for health and preparation, how do you prepare for a championship?
RJK : It starts really at the beginning of a season. How you come into the season with your mindset, your sense of focus. And every step of the way I think you learn something that makes you a better player, and all those lessons really come out when it matters the most in a championship. You obviously have your routines that you rely on, then you go out and play and have fun. For us in basketball, we have a seven-game series, so you have time to adjust if you need to. It's a fun experience to go through, and one that I'll remember for a long time.

Friendship and Mentoring
Two united as one. Riley Jeon-Keane has been lifelong neighbours and friends with Colby Whitsworth, 22-year old field hockey phenom whom have just graduated from University of Prince Raoul Islands and since has signed with Winnipeg. Their friendship, however long-distance, is strong and advisory with best of intentions, as well as filled with lots of hearty words...

JP : As 8-Blocks-Per-Second staff found out recently, you went to same high school as Colby Whitsworth of women's field hockey national team. Do you guys know each other by any chance?
RJK : Absolutely. Growing up in St. Clair-Ouest, We had known from very young age as neighbours, always the most active ones out in the field and competitors against each other....due to our age difference we never played together or against each other in any sport during high school or university, but I've been very well aware of her prowess in field hockey, hearing about it often from past teachers and those around in the 'hood.

JP : In that instance, were you contacted and brought for her recruitment back when UPRI eventually landed her commitment 4 years ago? I know it's a common tactic people use and whatnot.
RJK : Fortunately and unfortunately, there was no need for me in first place. Her maternal grandparents both went to UPRI and from the very beginning she didn't want to go to Kingston or USC, so it was of no surprise that she just went ahead with what UPRI offered and went to Prince Eric. It's turned out to be a good decision since the coach there knew her all the way back in his times with Frontenac Provincial Teams.

JP : Now going back, you've known her for a very long time and are very aware of her. What are your thoughts on her skills and what to improve?
RJK : I don't think there's really any explanation needed for what she has and can have for the future. Colby's an all-arounder whose finesse and speed are just remarkable, but also as the one whose mentality of an ace is really in effect. I can't establish this point enough because there are many players, across all sports, whose talents are there but can't carry the team when asked to. She's had what her club, university and now Team Quebec needs to be successful.

JP : She has Do you have any words of wisdom for her before the field hockey tournament starts?
RJK : I would tell her, just enjoy the moment. Growing up I've noticed when working out and practicing with her, and one of things is that she always holds great expectations and burdens on her shoulders- expecting to excel as an ace and beating herself up when failing to do so. I'd tell her not to do so, because such attitude can be dangerous, especially once you're moving onto bigger pastures from university. Being a pro means that you have to prove yourself right away, but also means that you can develop after earning your spot. This is of no exception, whether you're a star player entering the show like me 4 years ago or her right now. Being relaxed and doing what she has to do is what'll lead to the greater success....

The Teremaran Olympics Committee
Part Two
Provinsk, Vekaiyu
Novonaya, Kelssek

The Falkasian shrugged inwardly to himself. Not a bad way to start things off; pissing off the ethnic minorities of the bunch. Sure, it wasn’t intentional nor were the Gragastavians actually offended beneath their polished veneer, but still. The fact remained that gathering the few nations before him at the table had been hard enough, let alone actually having them commit a sizeable reserve of athletes or funds to the TOC. It was like herding cats, as the old adage went. Everyone had their own idea of the right and wrong ways of doing things, and none of them despite their shared patronage, had any desire to help one another win beyond the minimum prescribed by common courtesy.

Granted, he had never trusted Gauls, Yellowsians, or even the Austrakians. Personally, he had no gripe with any of the representatives before him. But experience had shown time and time again that historical inadequacies, whether perceived or otherwise, had a tendency to bubble up in moments of high stress like this. It is in those instances that the true nature of men come forth. It was apparent that the Gragastavians were nervous, insofar as they felt the need to constantly assert themselves are equals despite being already on such a plane. The Gauls desired to establish dominance, likely in line with their cultural notions of superiority and near world domination. The remainder, short of the Engollian Koepller, had yet to claim their symbolic seat somewhere along the table.

“Moving on… what would you propose be the first topic of discussion?” Dimitri asked to no one in particular, more concerned with calming the hostile air than actually trying to generate meaningful conversation. It was nothing more than a parlor trick.

Koepller mused, then answered,
“Well, I guess...are our athletes happy and getting along, currently? Are we meeting their needs?”

Al-Bahr rolled his eyes, “The ones that are allowed to compete, at least.”

Piaget slapped his open palms against the table, not hard, but dramatically all the same.
“I suppose we’re still talking about your dear camels?”

“Of course I am,” Al-Bahr said, “It’s affront to our culture, but that’s something you wouldn’t understand.”

“Seriously, let’s move on.” Troggerssen urged. He paused then said,
“Alright...I’ll say it. I’m concerned. Our athletes…all of our athletes...are doing fairly well, but still missing out on medals. I’ve noticed that they’re getting in the final heats and runs, making it to the top 10 or 20, even top 5, but still falling short. I admit I don’t have all the data as of yet…”

Koepller interrupted.
“I have a couple of my people working on that.” The raw data was all there, released by the hosts, it was just a lot to go through and make sense of it.

“Yes, good. Well…” Troggerssen continued, “I feel that the hosts are winning quite a few. Followed by Quebecois, Atlae, Electrumites and the Gregor...Gregy…?”

Koepller shook his head
“Just call them the lunatic brutes. They sometimes win just by beating their opponents to death and literally being the last ones standing.”

The Austrakian, Liebsgott, suddenly sat up straighter from his slouch,
“Is that legal?”

“Only in some countries…” Dimitri mused. “Won’t say which ones. The fact remains however… something isn’t right here. Maybe our athletes are just not up to par, but I highly doubt this as truth. The combined nations did well in the past Olympics, and although there was no Falkasian delegation then, there is little reason to suggest the current delegation would not perform comparable with past turnouts. We have no injuries or training deficiencies to speak of. It just doesn’t make much sense.”

“Non. It does not. I agree, but I don’t think there’s anything we can do from this room but speculate.” Piaget had calmed himself and was simply pretending there were empty chairs where the Gragastavians were sitting.
“...At least not until Koepller’s man crunches those numbers.”

Troggerssen agreed,
“Yes, I am at a loss as well. I know that we’re up against the best, and they have many Olympics under their belts and top training programs, but we’re no slouches either. Maybe not as many International competitions as regional...Still, it is a mystery.”

Gundvardurski, spoke up after being so silent for so long.
“Or, perhaps, maybe...We got spoiled after doing so well at the Winter Olympics. This Olympics is on a scale like we’ve never seen before. There’s way more competitors than our athletes have had to deal with. Maybe they’re doing the best they can, gaining experience and we just come back next time and use that to be better…?”

Troggerssen snorted,
“Sure, the Glisandian is going to be reasonable and suggest we go home with our tails between our legs. Don’t make waves.”

Gundvardurski turned a shade darker as he stared lasers through the screen. He held off on saying anything, though.

Koepller sighed. Now the cracks were showing in the ‘unified’ delegation.
“I think my colleague, Monsieur Piaget, is right. There’s nothing more we can do from here. I’d like to get back to checking on our people, so maybe we should wrap things up?”

Dimitri stretched in his chair and positioned his body to stand. If the others saw he was ready to leave, it was anticipated that they would also get the idea and start to adjourn the meeting.

“Frustrating as it may be… there isn’t anything we can say or do which will help our boys and girls win if they themselves cannot perform under pressure. I think Koepller is right… we all have important matters to attend to. It’d be best if we were to call it a day.”

The rest of them agreed in a cacophony of disjointed agreement. The officials were in varying moods of disappointment to disgruntlement to outright outrage. Ultimately, little had been solved. It wasn’t a great start for the Teremaran unified delegation. If most of them would even consider themselves unified at this point.

“Then it’s settled.” Koepller nodded. “Until next time. Gentlemen. Ladies. I bid you adieu.”

Slowly, they filed out of the two rooms. One in Provinsk, the other in Novonaya.

The Un-West Phoenician Activities Committee is not an organisation that many want linked to their name.

The committee was created by the government to investigate alleged disloyalty and subversive activities on the part of private citizens, public employees, and those organizations who pose a threat against the peace and stability of the nation of West Phoenicia.
The committee has the powers to bring to court those found guilty of such behaviour for imprisonment or death. The committee also have the power to shut down any political party or organization deemed un-West Phoenician that poses a threat to the ongoing peace of the nation.

The committee works alongside The West Phoenician Security and Intelligence Office. Committee members are nominated by the West Phoenician Security and Intelligence Organisation and are approved by the Royal family.

Committee Chairman: Prince Gai De Bush
Vice Chairman: Lady Margaret Senegalli- De Bush

Committee Members:

Justice Thuy Swanston
Justice Julie Grant-Federal
Justice Alan Anton
Mrs Tina Check
Mr Wayne Springland

In times of war or an international sporting event that has the whole world watching the Committee is at hand ensuring everything runs smoothly and unpatriotic voices are cut short or kept to a minimum. It is not because West Phoenicia wants to control their citizens they just want a united front and to avoid possible international scandals.

However recent investigations have discovered that subversive elements may have wormed their way into the current Olympic delegation.

So far a Physiotherapist and personal chef have been called back to West Phoenicia to answer questions concerning their loyalty and patriotism.
However it now appears one of the athletes has also been called back. Casper Van Deen who was scheduled to perform in the men's Omnium cycling had his application pulled and was ordered back to West Phoenicia to answer questions.
Casper Van Deen has denied all allegations of any subversive behaviour but was more disappointed that his application was pulled just before the race.
"This opportunity doesn't come around too often. I'm a great cyclist and i just made the Olympic delegation. So its a horrible thing to happen when i was poised to represent my nation. I'm as patriotic at the next person. It really is unfair. However i do congratulate Baron Wayne who placed 7th overall."

Basketball: time to resurrect our international team?

For a nation that's come in second place twice in the International Basketball Championships, we sure have fallen off the radar in recent years following the decision to cut back funding for an international team competing in the IBC in order to focus more on domestic and grassroots basketball. This strategy might not be the best one for us to undertake because despite the star talent being found, they will have no way of showcasing that talent across the multiverse, except in just one event every year. It is a real shame to see it happening on a constant basis.

It is unnatural to see the former basketball team that dominated the multiverse now separate into two separate, arbitrary categories because of their sex. The whole is more than the sum of the parts. The men's basketball team has slowly declined in recent years (with just a Round of 16 appearance this year) in relation to their female counterparts. This is because the men's competition is far more competitive than the women's, meaning that our women have a greater chance of making it to the final because of other nation's underinvestment in their women's teams. Case in point, they've won the last three gold medals in women's basketball and haven't faced any serious real threats in quite a while. It's this disparity of success between the sexes that the International Basketball Championships rectified, who remembers the Jane Greiner and Tyrone Mirza combination from our very first IBC? This would never happen in the Olympics only because they have different sexes. It's quite shameful that Basketball Electrum hasn't done anything about it.

Despite the men's relative decline, they have actually reached a peak in these Olympics, managing a crack into the quarterfinals before being beaten by Velstrania, due to bad officiating on part of the referees. It's time to take the opportunity to take advantage of this peak in re-establishing the international team that the multiverse feared and was jealous of. I'm sure that with the increased exposure and coverage of this international basketball team, more children and kids will be inspired to play basketball by these role models, rather than just a school program that they do for a few weeks just for fun. We can foster their love for their childhood heroes and create a lifelong relationship with basketball.

Or perhaps there are bigger fish to fry. Everyone knows that there is no real substantive difference between men and women competing in sport, but worringly, the Olympics insist on there being a gender-segregated events (except for some reason in the Equestrian). It would be better if we petitioned the Olympics to get rid of all gender divisions, but I suspect there would be many who would be resistant to such a radical change. There would be half the medals, so understandably some smaller nations would be upset that there would be less chances to win a medal, but that is the price they need to pay in order to reintroduce true equity into our sporting programs. Already we see many sports nations give a higher priority to the men's team than the women's team, with the men being given access to the best coaches and the women barely receiving any attention at all. It's time we show the girls of Electrum that they are equal to the boys of Electrum.

I digress. It never seemed in doubt that the Electrumites would prevail over Kelssek, they won convincingly 63-76, having maintained that margin from half-time after a pretty disastrous first half by Kelssek. It's no surprise that coach Paula Hobson has relied on the tried and true Electrumite strategy of an effective counterbalance and stopping any potential momentum the opponents have by getting two players on an opponent that's on a roll, or just setting up the the routine and well-practised motion offense from their zone defence, as they have done countless times over the years. Captain Jane Greiner, although getting a bit old, still had some fight in her, securing several turnovers which were instrumental in Electrum's victory. The true MVP for the tournament was centre Kate Jacobs, who has scored an average of 17.4 points per game. We already have our heroes Basketball Electrum. It's time to put them to good use instead of finding more.

Day 16 results

Novonaya, Kelssek and Provinsk, Vekaiyu - (NAP) The Alpine Union didn't win any medals on day 16 and is still at 9 medals. The women football team played a round of 16 game against Tobiasia. At the 77th minute, Krystyna Wisniewska passed to Sofia Kirstein who dribbled and made a cross to Alicja Jedrzejczyk who shoots and scores! It was the only goal of the game and the Alpine Union won 1-0. Zofia Stolarczyk and Anamarija Vucemilovic-Vojkovic both got a yellow card. The women team is advancing to the quarter final, and other big names also advancing are Electrum, Schottia and Vilitan Union.

The Alpine Union also won 27-22 in Men's Handball against Kelssek. Kelssek's Shawn Namaire suffered a nose injury and left the game but his injury isn't too serious and he'll be back for Kelssek's next game. In Athletics, Osi Kashama failed to qualify in Men's 1500m. In Cycling Men's Omnium, Jakov Kalinic and Micah Woodhead finished 33rd and 40th respectively. TVA Network - Commentary Transcript - Women's Indoor Volleyball (Matchday 4 : Royal Kingdom of Quebec vs. Free Republics)

Commentators : Devan Westheafer (Play-by-Play), Brittany Veronneau (Colour Commentator, Volleyball Analyst)

Westheafer : Welcome back to the University Sports Pavilion, where we stand ahead of the Quebecois women's volleyball national team's final group stage match against the Federation of Free Republics. I'm Claude Westheafer and I'm here with Brittany Veronneau, our volleyball analyst as well as former Olympic gold medalist back in Centralis and Nassau Bay games. What are your thoughts with Quebec entering today's game?

Veronneau : There were good number of disappointments and no-surprises through our first 3 games today. For first two games the Tricolour Taegeuk's done very well against Qasden and Schottia, but had an absolutely abominable against the hosts Kelssek, losing in full sets to cause additional complications for what looked to be a pretty smooth run in the group stage. Fortunately, we have a pretty solid lineup that just needs to finetune themselves and once that's done, the match shouldn't be too difficult to win at least in 4 sets. But the key part is that if we just win this game, no matter the score, we'll be firmly through.

Westheafer : So you think that this will be more on counting numbers and possibility, if we lose in group stage? There are six groups, which would mean that 2 best-placing group finalists would pull through and then all the tiebreaker rules will be applied. With Kelssek losing in full sets to Qasden just an hour ago, we just have to gain one more point, preferably at least 2.

Veronneau : That's correct. This is exactly why the Quebecois Women have to win their final match against Free Republics tonight, so that we could have our own fate decided in our own hands. Our point difference is actually very stable right now, so this shouldn't be a problem for most part anyway, but the key goal will be for the girls to win with solid grip on group stage title.

Westheafer : And now, it's time to introduce our starting lineup for today's match. First on rotation is Outside Hitter Alaina Browne, number two Kayana Jang the Opposite. This is then followed by Setter Kim Yu-Jin and Centre Yeo Oh-Soon...

......

Westheafer : And it's Browne to serve, but the ball boys will wipe the floor first after a nasty crash by Carvalho. She'll be substituted for Elizaveta Sokolova, in the meanwhile, and we'll see if she'll be out for the match or return. Quebec's leading, 12 to 11 in the first set. So far we're having a little bit too tight of a matchup here, what are your thoughts, Brittany?

Veronneau : Right now, not good at all. The receivers aren't doing very well with the float serves and without stable reception from Page or Browne or Carvalho, we can't expect Kim to land an accurate set for the wingers. It doesn't matter if it's Kayana (Jang) or Alaina (Browne), because right now that's not working. But if there's one positive thing to note, it would have to be solid blocks by the team. Quebecois National Team's never been splendid with middle blockers, but those standing back in the 90s, 00s, Centralis and Nassau Bay and now? They've always been great, and same I see here which is a good way to continue and cutting the Republicans off.

Westheafer : A float serve lands on the Republican libero, #5 (insert name), who quickly dives it. Afterwards the setter runs for the ball, in a slightly instable position to #4 (insert name), who goes for the long-range bomb but it's....blocked! Third block of the day for Team Quebec, as Riley Wilson and Carvalho combined for two-man block! 13 points to 11 for Team Quebec, entering Set 1.

Veronneau : That's exactly the part I've emphasised all tournament long. In order for the Tricolour Taegeuk to have their gameplan work, their serves and blocks need to be at their best. The Quebecois team, while high on potential, is largely green and as with men's team yesterday, the outside hitter position is where we truly lack an ace player to rely on all dangerous situations. So you have to counter them separately.

Westheafer : Indeed. Now Browne will continue her run with the second serve...

.....

Westheafer : So we just had a very close second set, with the Tricolour Taegeuk only winning after a deuce, 26-24. There were good number of things you wanted to focus on. What are your thoughts, Brittany?

Veronneau : As a team overall there are a lots of hits and misses this set. Wingers aren't hitting their strides in time and would hit into the blocks instead of over the blocks, both setters were giving terrible tosses altogether but especially on centres and as a result the overall execution of attacks were quite...sloppy.

Westheafer : I have to agree with you on that. It hasn't been the best of sets Quebecois national team's had all along, what are your thoughts on reducing such problems?

Veronneau : I think the key part is reducing the mental breaks. Right now the players aren't having the best of mentale, and if they do they aren't well-coordinated together. Whether it's because of this team employing many youngsters, just coming off a terrible match against the host nation or overthinking about receptions I don't know. But really, simplifying the minds is the best way to go with it, I feel.

Westheafer : Thank you. Now for the set Number 3, we have a slightly different serve rotation. We'll be first starting off with Emilie Siosalach-Perez, who throws a super-fast floater....

.....

Westheafer : Amazing. It's now second match point for Team Quebec. Free Republics have lots to focus, over next few points, as they face a steep hill to climb, at 24 to 17.

Veronneau : I think we're going to see some tears from the Republicans, who know that they will be walking out of the olympics, firmly last in the group. What they have to remember is that no matter how they did, they represented their country as they did their best.

Westheafer : Now we have (insert #7) landing a spike serve. Well received by Page, Sokolova starts to fly! Well defended by Free Republics, (insert the name), the #12 sends the ball to Quebecois side...Page receives it safely...Kim Yu-Jin and Sokolova's back attack from right side! That's it, it's all over! Royal Kingdom of Quebec has dominated Free Republics to win, 3 straight sets to none, to the quarterfinals! Grave faces from the Republicans, as they realise that they have to go home.

Veronneau : We've had a challenging match overall. First set was very simple, as the dominance on serves and blocks have given us that set....the second set was close. After a deuce, a couple of service aces by Kayana Jang turned out to be a huge lifesaver, and led us to never give the game up again on 3rd set. The serves worked out much better once again and our gameplan was materialised once more. Overall, a good job.

Westheafer : Ah, our athletes....their celebrations can't be forgotten either. Their smiles are altogether uniform, not as in literal terms but with great solidarity as a team in our victory.....
