Image Late Monday night, an anonymous member of Heathen Front leaked to us tentative plans by some members to blatantly oppose the Gregisgodistani regime while in Esportiva for a World Cup Qualifying match next month.

The leaked plans range from a series of flash-and-scatter anti-Greg protests to distributing flash drives containing "anti-propaganda" in Lord Almighty Gregory National Stadium and even more outlandish propositions like helping some disaffected locals escape back to Cosumar.

This morning, the Fiefdom Soccer Federation quickly issued a response, urging fans traveling to Gregisgodistan not to engage in any behavior that could be considered subversive by the dictatorial regime.

"The FSF is proud of the traveling support our senior national team receives wherever they go across the Multiverse, and we would certainly love to have a big crowd to cheer us on in Gregoryisgodistan for a very important match," Navarro said. "However, we always advise Cosumarite citizens to respect and abide by the local laws while supporting the team. This is especially the case in Gregoryisgodistan, where the many laws - however difficult they are to fathom from our own cultural perspective - are strictly enforced. Please take caution, everybody, and consider carefully the consequences of your actions."

Navarro is referring to this infamous list of crimes punishable by death in Gregisgodistan, which range from implying that Greg is not a deity to criticizing the state to eating coconuts. While foreigners have traditionally been afforded some leniency, outright attempts to spark rebellion will surely be met with without mercy.

The Heathen Front is among the most diehard of Cosumar National Team supporters' groups, known for its anti-religious and political bent. In World Cup 69, they partially provoked an ugly scene in the Dreamed Realm befre an away match against The Archregimancy. Several members openly expressed atheistic beliefs to monks and subsequently found themselves (and their team) being booed, shouted at, spat at and condemned to hell throughout the match. The Heathen Front has also made many positive contributions to Cosumar Soccer, however. They created the now-famous Onwards, Vanquishers! song during World Cup 72 and helped codify the Vanquishers nickname in the process. Still today, the voices from their section can be heard amongst the loudest in any stadium.

The outspoken Heathen Front attends every Cosumar match, but has never attempted to get directly involved in the politics of nations to which they travel. FSF President Tomas Navarro issued a grave warning to members who may be plotting to make it a first in Gregisgodistan.

"If true, these reports are highly disturbing. Cosumarite civilians should never defy states in which they are but a guest, especially one that has demonstrated such ruthlessness," Navarro continued. "The FSF would like to publicly denounce any plans, from the Heathen Front or others, to stir up conflict in Gregoryisgodistan. We do not endorse the dictatorial methods of Lord Gregory, but our first duty is to protect our own innocent fans who could be put at risk by these reckless endeavors."

Others, particularly on online comment boards, have expressed sympathy and even outright support for the leaked plans, though it is not yet clear if the plans are legitimate or - if they are - if Heathen Front still intends to proceed with them against the FSF's instructions.

"I'm not gonna go to that country, I can't risk it - I'm a single dad with two daughters. What's being rumored is...bold. Maybe crazy. It's ordinary people! But I can't say I disagree with the efforts." - Axel De Rew, a 4th-grade teacher in Ramusok

"The egregious brainwashing, vile vindictiveness and callous oppression of the masses perpetrated by Lord Gregory on a daily basis is incompatible with who we are as Cosumarites," said an anonymous Heathen Front member in a voicemail. "Those who have the opportunity to do something while there, even if it's just to slip some poor peasant a science book, have a moral obligation to do so."

"It's about time someone stood up to those bullies. The international community has turned away from it for too long. And I'm only saying that partially because those fucking Foot Slaves are ahead of us in Qualifying!" - Sheila Pendergast, a bartender in Azuris

In Group 11, Gregoryisgodistan do currently sit two points ahead of Cosumar in the Qualifying table. Cosumar suffered a shock 1-1 draw to Hicanans In Exile at home earlier in the week, allowing the Foot Slaves to finally break the longstanding deadlock at the top.

The top two finishers will advance to the World Cup, but finishing behind a team consisting largely of prune farmers, slaves and police officers would be a serious blow to Cosumarite pride.

Tonight the Vanquishers play in the much more tourist-friendly 95X, where they recently played the AOCAF. Though a distant 3rd behind Gregoryisgodistan and Cosumar, 95X could close the gap with a win tonight. They are widely considered the third-best team in the group and should give Peter Svensson & Company a tough test with the backing of Pacific City.

"Are... are you sure I shouldn't?" Yvonne stood before Don, trembling slightly. "I felt really good in the Sameba game... hell, I scored a goal! I haven't been able to play like that in years. Why not use that tonic again?"

Quietly tutting, Don shook his head. "No, no. Even my greatest magiks suffer from the laws of diminishing return; your body gets gradually more used to its effects as you take it more. There's no need to waste your precious, limited time of peak performance on a side such as Ancharmunn--a side with some history, sure, but a history of being mediocre. I'll have another batch ready for you before the Valanora game, to be sure, but I'm wholly confident in your current abilities to handle a side that's unranked and performing poorly."

"A-alright then. I'll do my best, then... I guess." With that, she slinked off to the locker room.

"Hrm... that's not quite what I expected," the dragon grumbled, "might need to alter the formula a bit."

"Depressive properties?" came a voice from behind, causing Don to whip around eyes wide-open. "Or perhaps addictive?" Nev was giving him a long, hard glare. "You're doing some funky shit with that "tonic", weren't you? Were you the one who sent Harnan into a frenzy in that Baptism of Fire game, scoring him his first ever international goal and a trip to the ER to get his knee realigned?"

Don's surprise fell aside, replaced by his own icy glare. "You really like pushing my buttons, don't you? I can assure you there's nothing foul ahoof here--I likely just added too much elderberry to Yvonne's tonic, nothing more than a small measuring mistake--it happens to the best of us. And I don't see what you're getting at with that Harnan comment, we all know he was practically out of his mind that day from food poisoning trying the local fare. I would advise, for everyone's sake, that you keep these empty accusations to yourself, before you embarrass everyone for no good reason."

Nev didn't want to back down, but getting stared down by something twice your height that also maybe can breathe fire is enough to make anyone take a step back. "This isn't a good thing you're doing, Don. It's gonna come back to bite you at some point, I swear!"

"I think it will be mutually beneficial if you parted ways with the team at this point, Nev. There's nothing that can come of your paranoia but damaging the team's morale, and when we're in a situation as we are--one of the few young teams actually in a position threatening qualification--we can't afford naysayers bringing us down."

"Wait, what? But--"

"I'll arrange for your transportation back to Vidial. Good luck with your store front, and may we cross paths again under better circumstances."

And before Nev could manage another protest, Don was gone but for a wisp of smoke.

No Survivors
Blast at Nuclear Plant Erases Existence of Nation

A routine test at the nuclear power plant in Stoneface, the capital city of Rebuild the Wall, went horribly wrong last night. The resulting simultaneous explosion of all three reactors at the plant destroyed the entire nation. According to satellite images captured by the international community, there are no survivors of the catastrophe. With the World Cup on break between the halves of qualifying, this includes the entire national team and all of its support personnel. Since there is no longer a Rebuild the Wall to represent, the nation will presumably be removed from the World Cup.

Juvencus and Brenecia commenced in a pretty hard fight. In a not so phsyical game between the two sides, a tie with the scoreline of 2-2 may see Brenecia leaving Torona unhappy without the 3 points, but Juvencus on the other being pretty relaxed. After an 1-2 half time advantadge for Brenecia, Juvencus was able to get away with the tie after Gallo scored a volley.

The firs thalf saw both teams going all in. Juvencus with their classic through ball play managed to do a chance first, Vives' throughball was good enough for Gallo to catch but Gallo was unable to capitalise after Woodgate's dive was good enough to keep the ball out. In the corner that followed, Gallo's header was once more saved. Brenecia then countered with a fast Skorupska midfield play, she then gave it to Carroll with the latter crossing it to Rankin, with her scoring a marvellous header, breaking the ice and starting an early Brenecia lead. However, the celebrations would only last for a few seconds since after the match started over. Alberighi displayed his unrealistic speed to get through Brenecia's whole right side before passing it to Martell with him scoring a lucky goal since the ball hit the top post before going in. The score was 1-1. Juven celebrations were immediately silenced by a determined Brenecia team, bombarding the Juven side with countless shots, most notably Carroll's left post hit. Redemption came for the Brenecians at the 40th minute, with a low bouncing shot by Balliol getting in, giving Brenecia the advantadge once more. Juvencus tried to equalise once more but Vives' shot came up short.
Image
Juvencus used La Torona for the matchup against Brenecia

The second half's start saw Brenecia determined to lock the victory from early on since the unsafe 1-2 lead wasn't enough, but Rankin's shot was saved by Zappa. Since then, Juvencus' offence engine got on, with a fast playing Juvencus side imitating the Brens' style of play and it worked with Juvencus trying to score 3 times, 2 Gallo shots and a Joaquim Martell free kick, all of which were ultimately saved or went wide. However, Brenecia was still on the game and a 88th minute Bowditch shot was enough to establish Brenecian dominance, or so, that's what Brenecian players thought. Juvencus went on the counter immediately, Alberighi displayed his speed once more only to be tackled by Szukala with Szukala only receiving a warning. On the chance that followed, Alberighi tried pounding it in, but it hit the wall, on the rebound he low crossed it in and Gallo was able to catch the volley to score the equaliser. The final score was 2-2, another big upset done by the squad.

Match mistakes:
Juvencus & Brenecia: Both teams were actually pretty flawless throught the game, both sides followed coach instructions correctly and it showed. An exciting match by the 2 only saw them doing the minor, unimportant mistakes of rare inaccuracy during passing.

TINHAMPTON 1-0 REBUILD THE WALL: EVANS TAKES THE NUCLEAR OPTION
Priscilla Evans nets only goal in game marked by lack of opposition
Tinhampton 1 (Evans 0'12'') -- Rebuild The Wall 0

In a controversial match ended after 12 seconds, Priscilla Evans scored the only goal of the game against a non-existent opposition to ensure success against their visitors and a good end to the first half of World Cup qualifying. After a short sequence of passes, the striker netted 20 yards out into an open goal, before the referee blew time. The team from Rebuild The Wall were unable to visit, because a nuclear disaster in the capital city had killed everybody in the nation. It is not yet known where the second match will be.

Although international reports had claimed that the World Cup was on break when the disaster happened, rumours that the team were unable to make it to Tinhampton are correct. A proposed team of international politicians captained by Dourian president Treize Dreizehn were set to take the field for Rebuild The Wall, but ended up - aptly - voting against the proposal. And so it was left to Tinhampton to kick off, where a short series of passes at the Ryan's Garage Arena led to Priscilla Evans tapping in a 20-yard winner to seal it. Not long after, the game was over, and Tinhampton can now take away two whole days of holidaying.

Newsdesk: 15/02/17
@ Zoloroni Sports City Stadium - Zoloroni, Mercedini

Hello, ladies and gentlemen and welcome back to today's edition of newsdesk for the 15th of February, broadcasting in Mercedini and across the multiverse. The news keeps rolling in and we are here to give you all the latest coverage of the action from here in Mercedini and across the multiverse. As has been tradition over the past week, the headlines has been dominated by news coming out of the World Cup Qualifiers with Mercedini and the rest of the teams in action playing their final game of the first half qualifying. After that, it's all reverse fixtures before the race to Quebec and San Jose Guayabal finally comes to boil and we know who is heading to the World Cup and who is out of contention. At the moment, only two teams are guaranteed to be in the World Cup, and that's obviously the hosts. No teams have been eliminated, so theoretically every team can still qualify but the number of nations in contention will be whittled down as the number of matches gets fewer and fewer. We will start off with World Cup Qualifiers, where Mercedini round off the first round of qualifiers by travelling to Prusy Krolewskie.

World Cup Qualification: Golden Eagles Round Of The First Half With A Win

FINAL SCORE
WCQ | MD9

PRUSY KROLEWSKIE 0
MERCEDINI 1

Billic 87' (P)

Wojewodztwo Pomorskie, Prusy Krolewskie
For their final game in the first half of qualifying, Mercedini travelled to Wojewodztwo Pomorskie in Prusy Krolewskie whick quite frankly is a mouthful. If you pulled that off in a game of scrabble I'd think you'd do rather well. Anyway, Prusy had been a wildcard thus far in qualifying, getting results against higher ranked teams but giving up bad result against teams ranked lower than them. Mercedini were in training and many wondered which Prusy would turn up for the match this time round. The players entered the cauldron which was the Stadion Narodowy w Ozorkowie with plenty of Prusy fans as well as Mercedinian fans who filled their allocation yet again when travelling abroad and hoped to see their team record yet another win.
The match started with extremely fast paced play from both teams as they looked to get control of the game early and secure an early result. Prusy went defensive in the early stages to whether the Mercedinian storm in the opening minutes or so. Chillotov had the best chance of the half with a shot on the edge of the box being parried onto the post and out for a corner. Since their 2-2 draw against Collatis, it looks as if the teachings of Bjarnasson has sunk in as they recorded two clean sheets since, with a 0-0 draw away at West Angola followed up with a 3-0 win as the Sports City Stadium against Kernovi. So as Mercedini and Prusy Krolewskie went into half-time goalless, there was anticipation that Mercedini could make it three on the bounce in qualifying. 0-0 at half-time, yet it was more entertaining than you would think.
The teams came out for the second half and many would think that these teams are in direct competition for a place at the World Cup, when actually Prusy has a very long path to World Cup Qualification. The teams had cancelled each other out in the first half which meant that Mercedini had to on the attack in order to keep up their qualification challenge and keep Svalen and West Angola at a safe distance away from them. Bjarnasson elected to add another attack on via a half-time, Dostalok came on for his second appearance at World Cup Qualifying with Jackic coming off from midfield, meaning Mercedini changed to a wide 4-3-3 for the second half. The changed tactics in the second half looked to have worked as the match was one-way after the referee blew his whistle to start. Prusy sat back and dug in to deny the Golden Eagles the time and space needed to make a serious move forward, which frustrated the travelling fans but suited the home team as they looked comfortable in holding their opposition to a draw. Time ticked by and chance after chance came and went before a lofted pass over the Prusy defence was controlled well by Dostalok before he was brought down in the box before he had a chance to take a shot. The Mercedinians protested and after a bit of deliberation he pointed to the spot and gave Mercedini a penalty with only minutes of regulation time remaining in the match. The Prusy fans expressed their displeasure as Billic took the penalty and replacing the Prusy boos with Mercedinian cheers, giving his team the one-goal advantage they needed to see the game through. Prusy Krolewskie tried to get an equaliser in the minutes left in the match but their efforts were in vein as Mercedini held out for the win away from home. Taking the match with a late late penalty, consolidating second place in the group as everyone enters the mid-qualifying break.

8 Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland 9 2 1 6 4 20 −16 7 5-1 -
9 Kernovi 9 1 4 4 8 13 −5 7 3-0 -
10 Collatis 9 0 1 8 6 21 −15 1 2-2 -

The Golden Eagles now enter the mid-qualifying break in second place, which I don't think many people were expecting. Of course, the top seed Vilita is sitting top of the pile but Mercedini are now within touching distance due to their win and Vilita's stalemate against Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland. Behind Mercedini are Savalen, who are currently four points behind which means Mercedini's match in Savalen has more importance considering where the teams sit in relation to each other. Then, Kitsunia-Deesse has had a remarkable run in qualifying thus far with a 4-3-2 record (with one of those being a loss), Mercedini play them next and they may be a dark horse in this group. West Angola has choked over the past couple of matches, where they were held to a draw against Prusy Krolewskie and were then emphatically beaten 6-3 by Savalen in the most recent match. After that are, Gadirya, Prusy, S&WR, Kernovi and finally Collatis who sit bottom of the table with a single point. Although, funnily enough they got that point from Mercedini! Will that missed opportunity come back to haunt Mercedini at the end of qualifying? It's a long wait to find out but if the Golden Eagles can pick up good results elsewhere then they can secure a place at their first World Cup with plenty of time to spare.

Dynum City Wanderers To Play In Mercedini?

Ever since Conseolta joined the Global Cup of Soccer, the nation has had a curious footballing culture with only ten teams in their top league and one team dominating them all. Dynum City Wanderers is a team based in the capital and has a rather remarkable record when participating in the league and winning all 36 games without conceding a single goal and with a goal difference of +184, averaging about six goals per match. Some footballing critics in the tiny nation have stated that the lack of competition means DCW don't need to try and think that they should transfer over to a more developed league. Cosneolta and Mercedini have already got a close sporting bond considering most of the Cosneoltan National Team play for clubs in Mercedini, the others play for...you guessed it...Dynum City Wanderers. It is unclear where DCW will fit in the Mercedinian footballing pyramid and many are unsure whether negotiations have commenced or if they ever will commence. Many have stated that the two nations should have independent leagues and co-operate to keep both nation's leagues co-operative. However, it will be interesting to see where this story will head and if there will ever be a bit of rest-bite for the rest of the teams in the Cosneoltan league who are trounced anywhere from 4-0 to 20-0 on a regular basis.

That's all from us here in Zoloroni, we will probably have a break now as our fingers are aching for some time off after pounding the keys on our keyboard for ten days straight. We will of course be back with more coverage of the World Cup matches and reports on the latest developing stories occurring throughout Mercedini and the rest of the multiverse. We hope you enjoyed reading and listening to today's edition of newsdesk! From all of us here, goodnight!

Abristan hold Verceola to a no-score draw

Abristan 0 - 0 Verceola

Abristan, away at Verceola, were looking to carry forward the momentum that saw them beat Huri de Wintre four goals to zero into the Verceola game, against a far better, more experienced side. Spirits were high before the game on both sides, perhaps too high, as Abristani striker Ismel Al Faucher was caught blind drunk outside their hotel and has been sent home to Abristan in disgrace without even stepping foot on the pitch once this tournament. This will be a huge blow to the team, as Al Faucher was their undisputed star player of the Baptism of Fire. However his life has been going downhill since then, being relegated with his club, Port Fenton FC, and enduring a tearful divorce with superstar wife Alice Arrow. These are almost definitely causes of his recent off the rails behaviour.

The score line of this game does not reflect how thrilling a game this really was, with both sides piling in the chances from very early on, with some outstanding keeping on display from both keepers. Isamu Dali in the Abristan goal pulled off some stunning saves, and Jamal Byala-Dwyer is going to have to fight to regain his place in the starting eleven. A near miss for Nick Rijnder in the 31st minute kept the scores level, and a post got in the way of another of his shots just a few minutes later. At the other end of the pitch Dali was kept busy throughout the entire first half, making a ridiculous 9 saves in the first 45 alone.

At half time neither side looked particularly happy, and their spirits wouldn't lift after the break as frustrating near misses at both ends of the pitch kept the scoreline blank. At about the hour mark the Abristan back four began to gel and after that Verceola struggled to move forward, getting only one wild shot off, as Abristan dominated the last half an hour. They couldn't turn this domination into points however, often choking in the final third, or misplacing what should have been simple crosses. The whistle finally blew to bring an end to what was a great spectacle, but surely a frustrating match for the players.

Nick Rijnder walks off the pitch frustrated after a disappointing draw

This means that going into the half way break in qualifying Abristan sit in 8th place in group 13, on 7 points, with 2 wins, 1 draw, and 6 losses. They are only 1 point behind The Sarian however, and realistically could be looking at a top 5 finish if everything goes to plan in the second half of the qualifying stages. They will have to be in fine form though to pick up wins against teams like Verceola, Kalumba and Nuevo Caracas. The competition for first place in Group 13 is also hotting up, with Schottia and Ceni the two titans at the top of the group, but they will have to careful and make sure Starblaydia and Kalumba don't start nipping at their heels.

Postby Brigantii » Wed Feb 15, 2017 1:45 pm

Despite three wins back to back and Brigantii moving into second place in the qualifying pool the big news back home was the statement released by the F.A. confirming that they would be refusing to allow their all male team compete against teams consisting of non-humans or women during qualifying for the next world cup. The move wouldn't be brought into effect until the qualifying campaign for World Cup 78 but left people puzzled as to how this would actually work. Particularly in the pub..

“What the f**k are they thinking?”

“How are we meant to qualify, dropping points for refusing to play?”

“What happens if we get to the World Cup and have to play a team made of purple stinging things?”

“How are we ever going to attract top players to the Premier League if we won't play against elves and what-not?”

“Why won't we play against women? Couldn't the men just beat them?”

“Beat them?”

“You know what I mean.”

The collective rabble was a constant stream of consciousness and there were a dozen valid points bandied around The Fox and Hounds pub in the sleepy Eborum suburb of Nox Hill. The main issue was the idea of needlessly dropping points against teams by refusing to play them, it's not like they were guilty of civil rights violations or their governing bodies were corrupt, they were just bipedal (for the most part), non-human, humanoid (in some cases) creatures... or women... or pirates...

“We should put together a team to compete in those games.”

“But the F.A. would never allow it.”

“The World Cup committee might?”

“But how would we go about getting properly sanctioned to compete against teams when the Brigantii F.A. will be sending a team supposedly representing the country?”

“Jesus Terry, let us just think about putting together a team first.”

“Sorry, just being pragmatic”

“Besides which, we've got another X years to figure this out.”

“Bagsie captain!”

“Jesus Terry, you're 57!”

The bell had rung for last orders and the five men, all getting on in years, greying in places that weren't already bald looked at their pints. Terry had at least two mouthfuls of bitter left, while Kenneth, Bob, Eric and the other Terry, or Tezza had at least half a pint to go. There was a collective hmm of contemplation as each thought of how they would tackle the Brigantii F.A's exclusionary tactics that would surely do their country no favours.

“Right chaps, drink up” came the instruction from the other side of the bar. The landlord, Fat Mick had given them plenty of time to finish their drinks and was now getting frustrated watching the group stare blankly into space. “It's time you lot went home to your wives”.

---

A 1-0 win over Sameba might not sound like much, but it actually is.With 29 spots in the KPB rankings separating the two, it can be considered a scalp, that coupled with the fact it was an away game makes it all the more impressive, plus, the fact the win proplled the team into 2nd spot in the group only makes it sweeter. The solitary goal came courtesy of left wingback Byron Samuels and a well taken freekick in the 37th minute. That goal was one of few opportunities the away side were afforded by a very solid home defence.

In the other game, Brigantii faced off against Ancharmunn at the Warbury Stadium and came away with a resounding 3-0 win in front of their home fans. Zack Wilbraham opened the scoring after 11 minutes with a powerful volley into the roof of the net. His strike partner and the soon to be Cusco based Michael Irwin added a second before half time. The third, and decisive blow came in the 56th minute when Jamie Gallagher headed in from a McNamara corner ensuring Brigantii would be in second place in the group at the half way stage.

Dear people reading this thread in the future. This was Audioslavia's 1093rd forum post. It has been an honour to write with you all. Here's to 1093 more.

OOC disclaimer: This was posted in the WGPC RP thread too. It is getting posted here because it forms the backstory for this cycle's RP series. Also, because the WGPC post will receive no RP bonus, I don't feel like I'm being lazy by posting this here too, in it's slightly longer form.

Mo Jepsen winced as his arse buzzed along to Beethoven's 9th. The shock almost caused him to drop his spider plant. The shock almost caused him to bump into Oliver's old desk. The shock certainly did cause his laptop to slide from under his arm and fall onto the hardwood floor and spread itself across as wide a distance as possible, as if its multitude of state-of-the-art components had been plotting their escape ever since the day they were forced into the laptop case in that clean room four years previous. Mo stopped, carefully placed his spider plant and cardboard box onto Oliver's long-empty desk, sighed, counted to six, and fished his phone out of his back pocket.

No name for the caller. Unrecognised number. This could only be one person. This was it. This was the other phone call that he had been dreading for weeks. Ordinarily he'd have had to hold his breath, count to ten and try not to die from the panic. As things stood, he merely gutlaughed a sad, 'why me' laugh and flabbered at the picture of the green phone. He stared at it before putting to his ear, as if he was half expecting it to emit a green toxic gas and suffocate him, sixties Batman style.

"Cattaneo" said the voice. "Sign Cattaneo"
"I'll call him"
"No. Go to him."
"But.."
"Go or no pay"

The phone went dead. Mo Jepsen sighed, counted to six, and realised he was in for a journey. Yeah, it was only three blocks away, but he'd be running circuits of the entire island inside his stomach all the way there.

Fired from his dream job and breaking one of the codes of an international racing competition on the same day. There was also a chance he was breaking some Nimbian law by being complicit to a foreign crime, but truth be told he didn't even know if there had been a crime at all. All he knew, in his role as 'guy who tells the Sheik the stuff that he's told to tell the sheik or he doesn't get paid', was that the result of the Nexus test would come to him, and he would pass it to the Sheik. He didn't know if the result was common knowledge yet or if the guy had been camping out at the A.E.T.D. for days with a long range camera. Either way, he knew what he had to do.

As he left the offices of the Kjelstad Mizmar newspaper it almost didn't occur to Mo that, not only was he was leaving them for the last time, but he was the last journalist out of there entirely. The newspaper had folded, if you'll pardon the pun, the week previous, and everyone had left but for the younger ones on the month-long, low-paid rolling contracts who had been tasked, for the next week and a half, with writing as much content as they physically could so that the newspaper could run in print for another fortnight, recouping a little of its losses in the process. It did occur to him that he was leaving his destroyed laptop on the floor of the offices, but he was sure there would be nothing incriminating in there.

He steadied the spider plant and the box in one arm and fumbled for his car keys with the other, thumbing the button as he found them and listening for the tell-take thunkitty-thunk of the doors unlocking. He nudged open the boot and put his belongings there, before kerchunking it closed with his arm and beeping the car back into the sleep mode with his thumb.

He turned to look at the building he'd be walking to. Well, part of it. To look at all of it without craning his neck he'd need to get back in his car and drive three quarters of a mile away. The Burj Berg hadn't been built by Abdul Yamin, but it had been gleefully bought by him once Hygolje had decided that a quarter-mile-high obsidian-and-gold monolith was not exactly the sort of image befitting a Big Oil company in the current geopolitical climate and had moved back to their old concrete bunker in Oljestaden. Abdul Yamin, who'd long coveted the tower, and who'd had a hand round the back of his sofa anyway searching for spare change with which to buy Hygolje outright, had bounced for joy when he realised he'd only need to buy the building, and so wouldn't have to overturn one of the marble chaise longue looking for the other bajillion dollars. For him, a Big Oil company in a large, black tower wasn't a public relations nightmare but, instead, a sign of his final victory in the island's prize marrow measuring contest and a base to launch his various other operations. A hotel chain here, a casino there, a lobbying agency here, a WGPC Racing Team there, a department that oversaw the manipulation of newspapers here, a secret line to the Kjelstad Mizmar there. Not that the newspaper had known anything about it, of course. It was Mo and Mo along who had been in the 'Sheik''s pocket, along with countless other people, most likely including the monosyllabic guy on the other end of that afternoon's phone call.

On the way to the building, Mo stopped for an espresso. If there was one thing he preferred about Kjeligsted it was that they had adopted Padian coffee culture (stand at the bar, pay a single dollar for an espresso, drink it in forty seconds, waggle your eyebrows at the pretty clientel and try to avoid the scournful stare of the Gary Larson Woman behind the bar) rather than Catharan coffee culture (queue for half an hour, order a double-marshmallow mochadolphin, sit in the corner waggling your eyes at your wallet and try to avoid eye contact with literally every single one of the customers). Feeling suitably energized, he finally entered the ground floor of the Burj Burg and traipsed uneasily up to the girl behind the counter. Five-seven, black hair, blue eyes, clingy white uniform, made up to be three pantones more caucasian than their features would have otherwise lead you to believe. This, he had been told, was the beginning and end of Yamin's uniform policy. The girl gave off an air of being your average bimbo until she opened her mouth and spoke a brand of English so crisp and clear it would shatter on contact with fog and leave no sign of its remnants. Mo's preconception was further ridiculed by her instant greeting of 'Good Afternoon Mr. Jepsen, you appear to be forty seconds later than we had anticipated' despite there having been no introduction and no way she could have known who he was except for the well-oiled machine behind her. The girl politely asked Mo to wait while she phoned through a request to 'upstairs' in Arabic and closed the browser on what looked to have been a French-language news website.
"Mr. Yamin will see you on the one hundredth floor, Mr. Jepsen"
"...Mr. Yamin himself?" asked Mo.
"Yes Mr. Jepsen"
Mo stopped himself from saying well shittity fuck and instead nodded politely and made his way to the lift. He was pretty sure he heard the young lady speaking Basque on the phone, with no pauses or hesitations, as the doors closed behind him.
Mo looked around for floor 100 and found that the lift only went as far as 53. Shrugging, he pushed that and waited. The lift continued upwards, and upwards, and upwards. Mo noted that, where floor 8 should have been, there was instead a floor named '7b', and that floors nine and ten were instead monickered '8a' and '8b'. Thirteen and seventeen were absent.

The doors to floor fifty-three opened to reveal a large diagram on a 10-by-10 slate of marble, detailing the building's lift-plan. There was, indeed, no lift that went all the way up. He would need to take the green lift up to 80, a blue one up to 97 and, to his utter lack of surprise, a gold one up to the hundredth floor. Each lift lived up to its name. The green lift looked like it had been made by hollowing out a lift-sized emerald and sealing the scratches with mirrors, the blue lift was, to Mo's utter panic, a completely transparent one that operated outside the building and the gold one appeared to have been willed into existence by God himself on the day that he invented Zsa Zsa Gabor and the Lambourghini. The final lift had also been decorated with women, each of which were five seven, blue-eyed, black-haired and wearing white. Two of them were conversing in Spanish, another two seemed to be talking in medieval Gaelic while a fifth was simply swiping through pages of the manual of a Link V6 WGPC engine on her iPad. The girl looked up at caught Mo staring. Mo turned back towards the door, which, of course, was a mirror, and so the girl managed to catch his eye again as she looked up. She smiled. She smiled the sort of smile that would have floored a charging rhino and forced it to consider diplomacy and the nature of its own brutality. Mo attempted a smile back, through one half of his mouth, and panicked for a second about exactly how he was going to talk to this girl when he was quite sure that, not only was she fifty times as clever as him, but that he had forgotten most of the words he knew but for 'nice' and 'hi'. He was interrupted by the doors opening to reveal a room so white it could have been the queue outside a tearoom. The only things that didn't seem to be white were the shadows of the funiture and the parts of the women that weren't obsfuscated by their white uniform. Oh, and Abdul Yamin's head, which was approaching through the glare.

"Mr. Jepsen, yes? Like the Carly Rae?" beamed the Sheik, winking a whole four times. Mo could manage only a short 'err' before Yamin continued.
"You have information for me?"
"Er, yes" said Mo, stuttering
"And it is?" asked Yamin, still smiling, cocking his head to one side. Behind him, one of the girls did the same thing, although Mo noticed she was holding out her phone and a stylus, about to make note of everything Mo had said. It occurred to Mo that she may even have already written down 'Er. Er. Yes'
"Cattaneo" said Mo, finally. "Cattaneo, sign Cattaneo"
"Splendid!" shrieked the shiek, who gave Mo what would have been a hearty pat on the shoulder if only he could have reached the man's shoulder. Abdul pulled a $100 dollar note out of his inside pocket and tucked it into Mo's jacket, winking four times again as he did so. Mo, who had never seen a $100 bill before, wondered quietly at whether it was an actual banknote or whether it was a symbol of what he was to be paid by whomever he was supposed to take money from for this trip. Suddenly, with a look of horror, the Shiek said 'oh, but no no no!' and whipped the money back out of Mo's jacket. Apologising, he replaced the $100 bill with a $500 one.
"Thank you Mr. Jepsen!" said Abdul, finally, "and Call me Maybe!"

Mo returned to the lift to find, once more, the girl from before. She was stifling a chuckle.
"I'm not Carly Rae Jepsen's brother" said Mo, finally, noticing that he had actually been able to say three words to this girl without either of them being 'hi' or 'nice'.
"I know" said the girl. "I've met Carly Rae Jepsen's brother"
"Oh?" asked Mo
"She played Shiek Abdul's birthday party four years ago" said the girl. "Her brother is a, err, I think you'd say he is a Rasshøl"
"He's.. he's a what?"
"Pardon my French" said the girl, now a little aware that she might have offended Mo. Mo, if anything was confused.
"That was French? 'Rasshurl'?"
"Ah, er, no" said the girl, as the lift doors opened. They rounded the corner to the blue lift. "Rather, Rasshøl is a nordic word. I had assumed that..."
"Ah" said Mo, realizing, "No I, well, I don't have much of my father's language, I'm afraid"
"You have his hair, though" said the girl, smiling the rhino smile once more. She nodded at Mo's eyebrows, if such a thing were possible. Mo, indeed, had bright white facial hair despite the hair on top (and, though he'd never tell, down below) being as ginger a shade of ginger as you could get without resorting to throwing orange paint at a swan. It was a peculiar genetic mark that was especially at odds with his complexion, which he got from his mother's side of the family, who were the sort of family who would call a son Mohammad and insist he never touch a beer or a bacon sandwich in his life.
"Yes. Father's hair, mother's skin. She's from here. Dad was from Jansvej"
"Your mother's skin was that shade of red?" asked the girl, cheekily. Mo nodded. He did have a tendency to go red in the heat, or when he was in an enclosed space, or when he was near an attractive girl, or when he was feeling scared of heights, and especially when all four happened.
"It's the view from this lift"
"Oh" said the girl, "and here I was hoping you were blushing because you were talking to me"
"That's what I said" said Mo, instantly realising it was the absolute best thing he had ever said in his entire life. The doors opened, and the two parted from the glass lift.
"This is me" said the girl. "I work here. Well, the floor below. WGPC offices. The name's Tazz. Tazz Araji"
"Tazz?"
"It's short for Tamzeen. I prefer Tazz."
"I prefer Tazz too" said Mo, realizing he hadn't gone two-for-two on great things to say. Tazz had the good graces to offer a polite laugh.
"This is my card" said Tazz. "Call me, maybe?"
"I will, as long as you never quote Carly Rae Jepsen again" said Mo.
"No deal" said Tazz, smiling, departing, leaving via a plain green door. Mo couldn't help but grin to himself as he found his elevator back to the bottom. He found himself kicking himself that he hadn't asked Tazz why there was no floors 13 or 17, or why the 7b and 8bs, before realizing that that was a stupid thing to be annoyed about.

His arse chose that moment to buzz Beethoven once more. Mo fished the phone from his back pocket. A voice from the other end. A mainlander.
"Mo. Jeremy" said the voice. Mo frowned. Jeremy? Jeremy who? Jeremy Jensen-Fletcher? Maria Cattaneo's countrymate?
"Jeremy Jensen-Fletcher?" asked Mo
"No" said the voice. "The other Jeremy"
"What?" said Mo, confused. It took him a further second to place the man's accent. "Oh" said Mo. "Ohhhhhhh"
"Yep" said Jeremy. "That Jeremy. We need to talk. We noticed your laptop go offline earlier."
"You what?"
"Oh, good, so that was an accident" said Jeremy. "I thought you'd found our bug"
"Bug?"
"Yeah, I know, right, 'bug'? What bug? There was never a bug in your laptop of course, how silly" said Jeremy. Mo felt like he may be being mocked. "All the same, we're going to meet up. We need to inspect your laptop for the bug that almost definitely isn't there"
"Well" said Mo, "It's in pieces on the office floor. Dropped it on my way out. You won't be able to get in, though."
"Oh... oh please say that again" said Jeremy, "you don't think *I* can get into a locked building. Just you wait. Actually, no, just you watch. I'll meet you outside in ten minutes"
"Fine" said Mo, grimacing and hanging up. First he loses his journalism job, and now he's about to meet the world's most famous journalist? Either side of a Sheik Yamin sandwich with a Tazz dressing? This.. this was a weird day.

Lord Almighty Gregory's Speech to the People

"Good evening, ladies, gentlemen, and slaves. I speak to you today, with news from the wicked nation of Cosumar. It seems a ridiculously heathentastic group from out of Cosumar, called the Heathen Front, has plans to disrupt the World Cup Qualifier that's coming up between our teams here in Gregoryisgodistan. These heathens were planning on committing numerous capital crimes, including blasphemy, by claiming I am not God. The world knows I am God. The world will always know I am God. These fans are also planning on disseminating propaganda against our Most Glorious and Holy Nation. This is completely unacceptable. And the heathens need to be punished.

"Effective immediately, Cosumar is being added to the Enemy List. It is now legal to murder any citizen of Cosumar within Gregoryisgodistan, and the killer will receive a one million greggygodbuck reward. Furthermore, if any members of the Heathen Front attempt to enter Gregoryisgodistan for the World Cup qualifier, they will be executed with the Brownie Cutter of Death in the airport's Execution Chamber. These heathens will have to pay the price for their heathen sins. And if any of the other fans try to pull such a ridiculous stunt, or even a less ridiculous stunt such as a loud, disruptive fart, they will be executed as well. I would strongly encourage them not to do that, lest they pay the price.

"We must not allow these lies and FAKE NEWS to be distributed and disseminated in our nation. We must not allow heathens to commit capital crimes. We must punish the heathens, wipe them off the face of the Earth. The heathens will never learn, and so the heathens will have to burn! Death to the heathens! Death to the Heathen Front! We must punish the heathens for all time! Send them Express Mail to the Land of Eternal Punishment where they will be sliced with the Brownie Cutter of Death for all eternity, just in the manner they died. That is what they deserve, and that is how they will be punished.

"To the Cosumar natives, I issue you this warning - do not even think of pulling such a ridiculous stunt. If you do it, you will pay and you will perish. You will be wiped off the face of the Earth. We may even nuke you into oblivion. Wouldn't that be awesome? The entire nation of Cosumar, dead and gone. All because of the Heathen Front! But even though only a small group of clowns call themselves the Heathens, the fact is that the entire nation of Cosumar is Heathens because they do not accept me as their Lord and Master. Everyone knows that I am Lord, everyone knows that I am God, and I will destroy the heathens in my Almighty Wrath! We will destroy them! We will destroy them! And they will be destroyed! All the heathens will be destroyed!

"Congratulations, Cosumar. Now the whole world knows you are all heathens. You should be ashamed of yourselves, especially the criminal enterprise calling themselves the Heathen Front. And I would really love to add to our Execution Count by executing a bunch of members of the Heathen Front. That would be so incredibly awesome, it would be so incredibly huge! Huge like my hands! I am the Lord, I am God, Fear Me, Bow to Me, Surrender To Me! I am Lord Almighty Gregory! Hear Me Roar!

"Now, let's all join in a rousing chant of DEATH TO COSUMAR! DEATH TO COSUMAR! DEATH TO COSUMAR! DEATH TO COSUMAR! DEATH TO COSUMAR! DEATH TO COSUMAR! DEATH TO THE HEATHEN FRONT! DEATH TO THE HEATHEN FRONT! DEATH TO THE HEATHEN FRONT! DEATH TO THE HEATHEN FRONT! DEATH TO THE HEATHEN FRONT! DEATH TO ALL THE HEATHENS! DEATH TO ALL THE HEATHENS! DEATH TO ALL THE HEATHENS! DEATH TO ALL THE HEATHENS! I AM YOUR LORD! I AM YOUR GOD! SURRENDER NOW OR PREPARE TO FIGHT! YOU WILL DIE IF YOU TRY ANYTHING, HEATHENS! YOU MUST DIE! DIE, I SAY!"

Lord Almighty Gregory felt his warning was sufficient, and that the Heathen Front would be deterred from coming. He doubted anything would come to the other Cosumar fans as long as they didn't do anything stupid, but at the same time, he doubted many would be foolish enough to risk it. But he would just have to wait and see, along with the Rest of the Multiverse.

Retribution

Chapter III

The third floor of the Black Street Commune was filled with worry and sorrow. The anti communist mob was outside and wasn’t letting anyone in or out, and the former communal meeting place on the third floor was now filled with the people who had been unlucky enough to come here at the wrong time, and with those who lived here. They were faced with the reality that death was around the corner if nothing changed, and they also were made to contemplate their life choices. Had aligning with the leftist and the anarcho-syndicalist movement been worth this? Was it worth the risk of harm that had now materialized from a small risk into a real threat? Everyone was faced with the fact that they had made a dangerous choice, and now that choice had the potential to be their doom.

Everyone except for Dusa Rusevski and Sonia Zubkova, of course. Those two were set to be rescued, if their rescuers ever arrived. The crowd outside was growing bigger and louder, and they had the feeling that Dusa’s brother might not get there in time. The atmosphere in the room kept getting worse and worse, as the inhabitants of this place paced around and talked and called their loved ones and cried about how they regretted their choices. It was too late for that kind of regret now, though. The Blue Skulls surrounded them, the Northern Syndicate was willing to allow them to get butchered on the basis of their ideology, and there were no friendly forces to assist them.

After the invasion by Pridnestrovia, there were no friends to the left wing in Nordskania. Before that invasion, the leftists and the conservatives had gotten along decently, or at least well enough to avoid outright hurting each other. Now, after an attempted subjugation by a socialist power, the only thing that would make the masses happy would be the destruction of the remaining leftist organizations in the country and the removal of their members. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, that was the logic. The Skulls considered themselves to be repaying the damage done by Pridnestrovia, and the NDPR’s communist regime before then, and it just so happened that these left wing anarchists were one of the easiest targets for them to take revenge on.

“What are we going to do when Jordan and Drago get here?” asked Sonia. “Are we going to leave everyone else to die? Is that fair? I just… I just don’t think we should abandon our friends because we have help coming. They don’t deserve the terrible death that we may be able to avoid. We could fight our way out instead of running, or we could try to find another exit that we missed and help everyone sneak out-”

“That’s never going to work, Sonia. We won’t fight our way out. These people are a real army. A lot of them have fought in real battles before. We’re just a bunch of young people with unpopular ideas,” sighed Dusa, not meeting her friend’s eye as she spoke. “I know it sounds awful, but if we have the option of saving ourselves, we need to take it. And if there was another exit here, we would have found it and left already. They have us boxed in from all sides. The only way anyone is getting out is by pretending that we’re on their side, and that’s hard for most of us because us anarchists have a pretty distinct look.”

“They’re anarchists too! How can they do this to us? How can they pin the blame on all the crimes of the communists on us and execute us for that?”

“This place attracts a lot of communists, too, you know. I always knew that it would be dangerous to hang around because of that. I didn’t know that it would ever come to this, though,” said Dusa. “And besides, the differences between our anarchism and theirs are huge. The Northern Syndicate is anarcho-capitalist, which puts them on the right wing. Us, on the other hand… We’re far to the left, just as far as the communists. We’re syndicalists, members of the older branch of anarchism. We agree with them that life is better off without a state, but that’s where the similarities end. Our group wants to live in a stateless but communist land, and they staunchly defend capitalism.”

“But why can’t our branches of anarchism just be friends? Why do they have to turn on us and try to kill us for what the communists did in this country? I wish I never got involved with this movement!”

“Because, at their roots, our ideologies were born out of enemies. They have always been a member of the right wing despite their anti statism, and we’ve always been a valued part of the left,” explained Dusa. “Trust me. I’ve studied the actual histories of both ideologies, and they’re more connected to different forms of statism than you would originally imagine them to be. That’s why I feel so bad for bringing you into this. I studied the history of this movement and made my own choice to join. But you… You joined because you thought it looked cool and because you just wanted to hang out with me more. I know you don’t want me to take the blame, but if we die together, it’s all on me. I’m sorry, Sonia.”

Before Sonia could reply, someone pointed out the window and shouted. “Their reinforcements are here!” the person said, and everyone went into a panic again. Some people started crying. Others made more calls to their loved ones. Others went downstairs after deciding that making a run for it and seeing if they could escape the mob would be better than getting dragged out and eventually shot with the others. “They have torches, I think they want to burn the place down!”

“Shit…” Dusa cursed under her breath, crossing her fingers and hoping that Jordan and Drago would get here soon and that they wouldn’t get caught by the crowd. “If they aren’t here now, I’m not sure they’re even going to come-”

“Speak of the devil,” said Sonia, as the door to the spacious meeting room swung open and a young man with long hair and a trimmed black beard stepped in. It was Drago Tomcic, and he had arrived just in time to pull them out before the mob got to actually raiding the Commune. “Man, am I happy to see your face again… Remind me to buy you drinks if we ever get to safety.”

“The key word is if,” Drago muttered, waving for them to come on before the others saw him and begged him to take them with you. “Let’s go. Jordan is waiting outside in the car, a couple of blocks away. But I don’t think it’s safe to hang around, there’s a whole new mob coming. We’re going to have to get out and then we’re going to have to run all the way to the car and hope they don’t see us and shoot us on the way there. Got it?”

“Yeah,” said Dusa, nodding and zipping up her jacket as she moved to follow Drago. She looked the others over one more time, wondering if they were doing the right thing by not trying to help them escape, too… But there were only so many seats in the car, and it would be stupid to pass up this chance to save themselves. This chance was practically a miracle. They couldn’t afford to pass up on it because it didn’t save everyone. This time around, there was no option that would save everyone.

“Hey, what about us?” someone shouted, as Sonia and Dusa went after Drago. “Any more room in your car?”

“Sorry,” mouthed Dusa, stepping into the stairwell to follow Sonia and Drago as she took one more look back at what they were leaving. It hurt her heart to do this. It really did. She had to tell herself that there was no other option, as she closed the door behind her and followed her two friends, her heart beating out of her chest as the sounds of the mob could be heard outside. Someone could be heard shouting with a megaphone, and there were other shouts that were loud enough to be heard through the walls. They passed the second floor and then went further down to the first floor, and that was when Drago led them outside and into the alleyway behind the warehouse.

There were a pair of men waiting for them in that alleyway, however, guarding the back door that had been unguarded when Drago first arrived. “Start running,” he told the girls, raising the shotgun that had been in his hands the whole time and acting like he was about to shoot, as both man snapped into focus once the newcomers emerged from the warehouse. But because there were two men and Drago knew he could only take one shot at a time, he lifted the shotgun up and used it as a baton to slam down on the head of the closest man to stun him. As the two girls started to run towards the street, Drago turned the shotgun towards the other man and fired straight into his chest, spraying blood and dropping the Blue Skull in black fatigues.

He still had to do something with the other man, however. The man had the same black fatigues and the same weapon, a submachine gun. He was getting ready to level it and fire it when Drago took another swing at him, using the shotgun like a baseball bat to slam his head into the brick wall of the alley and knock him to the ground, unconscious. Drago would have shot him to make sure that he didn’t get back up and shoot him in the back, but there was no time to reload the shotgun. He took off running, behind Dusa and Sonia, as they ran with their backs to the crowd that hadn’t noticed them yet. If the crowd saw them and they were in range to shoot, they might be dead before they could reach the car.

Jordan was parked down the block, and he accelerated and turned off of the curb and started heading towards them to meet them. That was a risky move. The crowd was gathered on the corner and on the street that intersected at that corner, but if they noticed the car, they might turn to the street that they had previously been ignoring and come after the trio and Jordan. As soon as the car, an older cherry red model that had been produced by Nyaca Motors, was close enough to them, Jordan slammed the brakes and then started to turn to drive away as soon as they were in.

Dusa was in first, opening the back door and practically leaping in. Sonia followed after her and climbed through the still open door before slamming it shut. Drago was the last one who had to get in, and he sprinted faster than he had ever sprinted on the football pitch as he ran to the passenger side of the car before opening the door and diving in as Jordan started to accelerate again and zoom down the street, just as some of the Blue Skulls members started looking to see what was happening. Fortunately, they didn’t make the connection that Jordan was helping three of their enemies escape, or that Jordan was one of their enemies himself.

“Are you okay?” asked Jordan, turning to look back at his sister as he drove. “I heard a gunshot, did you guys run into trouble on your way out? Oh, and it’s nice to see you, Sonia. I’m glad that you’re safe, also.”

“I’m… I’m not okay, but at least I’m not dead,” said Dusa, hyperventilating as the crowd grew smaller and smaller in the rearview mirror and they continued heading down the street and as far away from this place as they could get. “You have no idea how scared I was. Everyone else was going to die, and… And I can’t believe that out of everyone in there, me and Sonia are the only ones who are going to survive. I left friends back there, Jordan. You know Juno, right? She’s still on the second floor… And her brother, Dimitar, is somewhere there too. I know we didn’t have time to save everyone, and I know there’s not enough room, but I can’t believe we left them.”

“We’ll go back,” said Sonia. “We have to. We’ll head back before they shoot everyone and see if we can bust out Juno and Dimitar and as many others as we can without getting spotted. We can pose as members of the Skulls, like Drago did to get in. We can’t just leave them to die, can we? Not at the hands of their own countrymen.”

“We’ll see about that,” said Jordan, looking back towards the road and picking up more speed as they rapidly went away from the downtown area and towards the suburbs outside the city. “Right now, I want to get away from here. Far, far away from here. We couldn’t save everyone, but we were able to save you two, and that’s what’s important. You can’t always have a perfect ending, Sonia. Sometimes you just have to be happy that everything didn’t turn out the worst way it could, because a lot of times, it does.”

Six in the morning.
Kirisaki snored, deep in her own dreams.
Her sleep was not to last, however.

"Is she still sleeping?"
Chrom poked her, not disturbing her rest at all.
"Yup. Miss Kirisaki sleeps a lot."
"We really have to go though."
"Yup! We'll see Sulsu at the zoo!"
Qasden smiled, picking up a feather from among her toys.
"Uh... What are you doing?"
"I'll wake her up!"
The younger girl started to tickle Kirisaki's feet.
The former warrior shifted aside on bed, rolling side to side until finally waking up in laughter.

"Hahahahahaha... Oof... What time is it?"
Chrom sighed.
"Remember how we were supposed to go to the Zoo today early?"
"Yawn... Do we really have to?"
"Yup!"
"Ugh... Fine."
The two nodded.
"But I'm hungry."
Chrom face-palmed, Qasden fell on her bed.

Eight in the morning.
Everyone aside of Kirisaki waited on the couch.
The girl had finally finished her breakfast.

"Are you done?"
BUUURP!
"Y-yeah!"
"Finally!"
"For Arceus' sake! Guess we can finally go now?"
As they walk out, however.
"...Did any of you brush your teeth?"
"Uh... Why wouldn't I?"
"Yup yup yup, mommy! Let's go see Sulsu!"
Kitsunia looks at Sunrise.
He takes a couple of seconds to realize she's expecting his answer.

"...What? You saw me brushing, please."
"...Do we really have to?"
"Yes! I wanna be a good mother!"
"...But you're not my mo-"
Kitsunia pulled Kirisaki to the bathroom by the ear.
"OW!"
"Let's brush your teeth!"
Sunrise covered his left ear, sighing.
"At least, it wasn't me this time."
"No offense, Sunrise, but why do you let her pull you around by the ear?"
"Silly Custardy brother, mommy does what's best for us!"
"She's like this since she was a little girl. Having to live with me and Matthew does tend to give moments where authority was needed and well..."

"Aunt Huelandia wasn't always there."
Sunrise returned from the street, scrapped and bruised.
Kitsunia dashed to her cousin, shocked.

"Sunrise! What happened to you?"
"Those bullies from school are at it again... Ow... I tried to get them off Hakifao, but then they decided to beat me!"
"...You saved Hakifao?"
"I don't like her either but... just felt right to do so."
Sunrise sighed.
He was aware that Hakifao had been treating them poorly, acting as stuck up as possible about everything.
He knew he'd get scolded by Kitsunia.
He closed his eyes.
Nothing came.
A hug.
As he opened his eyes, he noticed Kitsunia hugging him, a fair smile on her face.

"You dummy... I don't know why you'd do something like that but... I respect that very much."
He could answer with a weak smile.
Then, he could hear loud knocks at their door.
Yells of scorn.

"Damn... they followed me..."
Kitsunia nodded.
"I... I need to go there and beat them..."
"No need."
She gave him a kiss on his left cheek.
"Get some band-aids. I'll solve this properly."
The girl darted out, her fox-like ears pointed up.
Sunrise heard some conversation until a bunch of yelling happened.
Finally, Kitsunia returned, some blood on her dress but she herself was almost intact.

"Don't think they'll be a problem again."
He was shocked.
"...How?"
"I... I can be strong for the people I care."
She smiled, lifting her fist up.
"And nobody beats up my cousin!"
She looked down, noticing the lack of a First Aid box.
"Oh, we still need to treat you!"
Kitsunia dragged Sunrise by the arm, worried.
"U-uh... I'm fine!"
"No, you're not!"

Sunrise laughed a bit.
"She looked rather cute as well... but whenever Matthew and me screwed up, she'd get on our ears in seconds."
"I... see."
"She's a nice girl most of the time, I promise."
The two returned from the bathroom, Kitsunia still chewing her out.
"So, Kirisaki, did you learn what you have to do every time you eat anything?"
"Sigh... Brush my teeth every time I eat anything..."
"Unless?"
"Unless it's a social event."
"Good."
"Or if I'm in a vehicle."
Kitsunia patted her in the head.
"Smart girl."
"Don't you want to give her a treat as well?"
"Ooooh, a treat!"
"Please don't!"
"You just brushed your teeth."
"Baw..."

It was rather unusual of the Sonnel District, a rather advanced district technology-wise to be the sole place that had a zoo in all of Sportsville.
Still, the zoo itself wasn't lackluster in the slightest. Clean, filled of all sorts of species and, of course, the main attraction.
Qasden read the small nameplate in front of Sulsu's cage.

"Sulcius pescarus!"
"That's Sulsu's species' name."
"...Eh?"
"Sulsu is a different species from ours, little sister. In fact, you can see by the name to which sort of genus and species it belongs."
"...Genus?"
"Yes. Each species belongs to a genus and a species. In Sulsu's case, its' genus is Sulcius and its' species is Pescarus."
"..."
"Scientific Classification is a key part of Taxonomy, the study that groups species in specific groups based after similarities. It's named in-"
Kitsunia sighed, putting her hand over his shoulder, pointing that the girl was already paying attention at the moving Sulsu.
"...I expected that."
"Sure you did. Remember she's a kid, she might not be interested in listening too a lot of things she doesn't even know of."
"...OK. Thanks."
She smiled, watching as Qasden kept looking around for the pet.

A small, spherical robot wandered across the zoo.
...Well, more like rolled instead of wandered.
It rolled until it found a certain right foot.

"Sunrise! What's that?"
"It's a... hmmm... a ball with a lot of lights."
"Let's kick it!"
"NOOOOOO!"

A girl dressed with red overalls, a green shirt and white boots, her head covered by what looked like an aviator's cap including a pair of goggles.
Her right arm had a rather overcomplicated design that looked like a wrist watch.
She quickly crutched to the ground, grabbing the orbital robot.

"Now, now, calm down Robby... Mommy Upper Sunrise is here!"
She pet the robot, looking slowly upwards.
"Are you insane? You almost broke my invention, you... Brother!"
Her eyes widened as she realized that it was Sunrise, her old brother.
Sunrise could tell the girl was a bit older than Southwestern, probably just a bit younger than him, possibly adopted when he left them.

"Eheh. Yeah, that's me."
"A-and who be this?"
She looked at Kirisaki, confused.
"Doesn't look like that Miss that lives with you!"
"This is Kirisaki. Why didn't you come to the lunch back at Aunt Huelandia's?"
"I was setting up my lab. I work here now."
"...How old are you?"
"A scientist never tells!"

"Younger than me, at least."
"Say, why don't you all come to my lab later? It's by the end of the Zoo."
"...You have food, right?"
"Uh... Yeah. I have to, I live alone."

Kirisaki leaped at her, knocking her down to the ground.
Upper Sunrise stared at Kirisaki with anger.

"I'm aaaall yours!"
"Eeeeh... I'm going to regret this."
Tails... Watch out, you're gonna crash, aaaaah!

Lineup vs. Taeshan: Thorben; Morningstar (Ilya '66) - Stef - Aart - Ellen (Damjana '89); Montague - Liam; Rien - Hellion (Sybill '51) - Antonio (C); Andisori;

Goalscorers: Andisori '7 (assisted by Montague), Montague '37 (assisted by Ellen), Andisori '58 (assisted by Liam), Rien '81 (assisted by Antonio)

Chromatika turned in the most complete game of the cycle so far, destroying the Purple Knights in the last game of the first half. Taeshan didn't have much of a chance - the back four dictated the entirety of the match, and Keira turned in a performance that showed the class that she has become, turning in a brace and cutting into the Taeshani defense. Nikolai turned in an amazing game as well, stopping all shots headed his way. The team will be able to rest their players, although there will be a mid-qualification friendly against the Royal Kingdom of Québec.

Grade on the Top 5 Teams of Group 1:
The grade is given with the rankings and pre-qualifier expectations in mind.

1. Chromatika (Rank 1): 25 A If it wasn't for HUElavia playing spoiler, this team would be perfect. Keira has been solid, but it is Alyss that has taken the spotlight. Parker's gamble has been paying off as well with lineups and substitutions.
2. Red Blackiland (Rank 3): 22 A The only loss suffered by Red Blackiland is to Chromatika. They handled Krytenia and Taeshan with ease. Their draw was against Coldfield. Seems like they have a wonderful chance of qualifying this cycle and keeping Krytenia away.
3. Krytenia (Rank 2): 19 B- Losses to Chromatika and Red Blackiland and a draw against Taeshan has dampened Krytenia's spirits. They'll need to absolutely pick things up in the second half if they are to make a run for things, although that being said, they're only three points behind Red Blackiland, having taken care of all other teams in the group.
4. Taeshan (Rank 4): 17 B+ Losing to Chromatika and Red Blackiland was expected; drawing against Krytenia was a boon. The other draw to lowly Lanzo, though? That was a problem. Needs a bit of slipping up by either of Red Blackiland or Krytenia.
5. HUElavia (Rank 5): 14 B- Has been surprisingly annoying.

Lineup @ Royal Kingdom of Québec (friendly): Nier; Morningstar - Stef - Aart - Ellen; Montague - Liam; Rien - Hellion - Antonio (C); Andisori.

Spaam Hang On To Second

A strong performance against the Socialist Northern Islands was enough for Spaam to hang on to second place in qualifying by the barest of margins. The trip to the SNI was anticipated as Spaam’s best chance to win a game away from home, and star striker Merlara Sehelin did not take long to put the visitors ahead. Sehelin continued to show her great positioning skills, placing herself perfectly to head a Gibelar Ralora corner into the goal past SNI keeper Halldór Aronsson in the 9th minute. The home team rallied after that, with a thrilling midfield battle minimising both teams’ chances to score. Vice-captain Thalia Fenzana controlled the middle perfectly, while captain Farlinar Reyen made sure that SNI never got a good shot at goal. The best chance for a second goal in the first half was 42nd minute Sehelin intercept that she ran a third of the way down the field, but the shot hit the cross-bar and over the goal.

The second half saw the Socialist Northern Islands come out strongly, and it took a diving effort from keeper Oridul Inasys to save the Storm Thorsen strike in the 50th minute. After that, the Spaamanians showed the staying power that has made them this season’s surprise performers to tire out and dominate the remainder of the game. With seventy percent possession in the second half, it took everything for the home team to not give away another goal, and they were finally broken in the 79th minute. Paatukar City’s top goal scorer Oridul Elzeros took advantage of a stumble from defender Arni Pólsson to slot a goal past Aronsson. Though there were a number of other chances, SNI managed to keep their defense strong and were lucky to finish the game two goals to none down. The win keeps Spaam in second place in the Group 4 ladder, but they still face a tough draw in the second half of qualifying.

Qualifying Predictions

With the half-way mark in the 77th World Cup qualifying season being reached, there have been some major surprises in Group 4. Notwithstanding the unprecedented performance of the Spaamanians, a number of other teams have either out- or under-performed in one of the toughest groups in the race to Québec and San José Guayabal. Here is the run-down of Group 4 so far:

Eura
Rank: 11th
The former world champions have been lack-lustre in the performances, but are still unsurprisingly unbeaten. Draws against teams like Nagore and Hirvania have shown their inability to close out seemingly easy matchups. However, they are still by far the best team in the group and should make it through easily. Crucial away games against second and third place Spaam and Veldgouwen will be their biggest tests and their best chance for a loss. They will have to perform at their best to ensure they even take away a single point.
Prediction: 40 points (1st)

West Saintland
Rank: 32nd
The second seeds have been disappointing, their loss to Socialist Northern Islands showing how far they have fallen. They have held onto fourth position, but unless they improve, their spot will be in danger. It is anyone’s guess whether they can qualify or not.
Prediction: 29 points (5th)

Kaboomlandia
Rank: 45th
Kaboomlandia has had a tough draw in the first half, and should pick up their game as they get closer to the end. Their win against West Saintland showed they can beat some of the best, but their three-nil drubbing by Kandorith exposed crucial weaknesses in their defense. If they can close those holes they may be able to change some of those draws to wins.
Prediction: 31 points (4th)

Kandorith
Rank: 59th
Kandorith has barely shown any of the talent that they have brought to the game in the past. However, the true followers of Karela have ensured that there hasn’t been more than two goals in any of their games, apart from their three-nil win against Kaboomlandia. If they can’t score goals the won’t be able to win.
Prediction: 22 points (6th)

Veldgouwen
Rank: 84th
The fifth seed Veldgouwen has exceeded all expectations, and would be cruising to qualification if it wasn’t for the rise of a certain former ancient football superpower. They have only gone down to the top two seeds, and gained points in every other match. Veldgouwen are still favourites for the second qualification spot, but it is their upcoming home game against Spaam that most pundits say will decide it. Should they win their next game, as expected, they will be flying to Québec and San José Guayabal next year.
Prediction: 37 points (2nd)

Hirvania, North Carcossia and the Hesperides, Nagore & Socialist Northern Islands
Ranks: 128th, 178th, 240th & 264th
These teams have not made much of an impact this season, failing to fire against almost any of the teams. North Carcossia and the Hesperides seems to be the best of the lot, with two wins, but Socialist Northern Islands only win did come against second seed West Saintland. They should keep their current positions in the bottom four, with their any wins only likely to come against each other.

Spaam
Rank: n/a
It is safe to say when Spaam signed up to qualify for the world cup, no-one expected them to do as well as they have. As an unranked team, their performance has been unrivalled, and they have played like the great Spaamanian teams of two hundred years ago. Saying that, they are still at long odds to qualify. With away games against West Saintland, Veldgouwen, Kaboomlandia and Kandorith still to come, it’s clear they have had a very kind draw. There are a lot of punters putting money on a Spaamanian qualification, with some betting agencies reporting that they may have to pay out ₤1000000 thanks to some early adopters. In any case, they have shown what they are capable of, and will certainly be a force to reckon with in the future.
Prediction: 35 points (3rd)

Spaam On Friendly Tour

The Spaamanian Football Association has announced that they have negotiated a couple of friendly games against the World Cup hosts as they travel to Veldgouwen for their next qualifying match. Spaam will be playing against San José Guayabal in Lulai as part of their Selecta World Tour, followed by the Royal Kingdom of Québec in Halifax. These will be the two biggest tests for the new Spaamanian team so far, and will be valuable experience before what will be a must-win game for them against their main rivals for qualification. The two matches will be televised live in Sonkongaalu Square, as well as on SNTN.

Ayanna Barca-Carthy pored over the match report for the friendly against Cobrio. She hadn't selected many of her "first team" players, having taken the opportunity to test out some fringe players and emerging youngsters, though something was troubling her about the performance. "Autumn," she called out. "Is it just me or did we seem a little off today?"

"There was something different about that game, no doubt about it. But hell if I know what it was." Autumn shrugged. "Maybe it's just because it was Cobrio?"

"You mean they might have seen it as more important because of recent events?"

"Possibly. I mean, you said it yourself, you almost wanted Cobrio to win."

Ayanna paused. She had said that. She opened her mouth to protest, but stopped short. There was no real comeback to that point, and she couldn't really criticise her players for perhaps not going full throttle in an exhibition match. Especially not when several of them could just as easily have been on the opposite side of the pitch.

Autumn raised an eyebrow. "No riposte? Colour me surprised, Aya."

Aya merely frowned. "Look, I know this result is meaningless in the grand scheme. I know that there are plenty of reasons to have wanted Cobrio to win. I know there are a few players who might have preferred wearing green and gold in that match, even. But there is something about that performance that bothers me. Call it intuition."

"Well... if you want to do something about it, you better figure out what the problem is." Autumn pursed her lips momentarily, before relaxing into a grin. "Call it logic." She quipped.

* * * * *

"...and Osarius are throwing everything at Mar de la Plata, but to no avail!"

"No disrespect to the home side, but this might well turn out to be a rather humiliating result for the Firebirds, all things considered."

"Especially after that win over Audioslavia. What a result for Mar de la Plata if they can hold on for another few minutes!"

* * * * *

"Almighty Resheph what the hell is going on?!" Ayanna Barca-Carthy exploded. Her clipboard several feet away, her attention fixed firmly on the pitch. She didn't even notice the fourth official heading over to have a word. She turned in time to see Autumn Phelps intercept him and reassure him that all was under control. A heavy sigh and a brief moment with closed eyes later, and Ayanna swept a hand over her face, clearing her hair out of her vision.

"How many chances is that?" She asked over her shoulder to Elaine Tyne, one of the team's performance analysts.

"Chances? Thirty four. From which we've seen twenty-two shots."

"Ghadt save me!" Ayanna muttered.

"Taking the average ExG value for the shots that were on target alone, we should be up by three. Even accounting for ExG conceded." Elaine continued. "But that's significantly lower than the usu-"

"Thanks." Ayanna cut her off, barely containing her fury. Her eyes still not moving from the action on the pitch.

"Aya..." Autumn called to her. "You know that talk we had after the Audioslavia game? About the Cobrio match?"

"Yeah."

"Well... I think I know what the problem is."

"Oh?" Ayanna replied with more than a hint of impatience.

"Look at the front four, and their defenders." Autumn replied, before stepping closer and lowering her voice. "And this." She held up a heat map showing the location of every Osarius shot in the game so far, superimposing it over one showing the location of every Osarius goal in the past seven games. "They're focusing on-"

"The key attacking areas. Of course. How did we not see this before?"

"We weren't looking for it, Aya. Distracted by the other stuff around the Cobrio game, so it wasn't clear that they had been trying to limit us tactically."

"How long left?"

"About ninety seconds, plus a couple of minutes stoppages I reckon. You got an idea?"

"Maybe. Signal for a sub." Ayanna strode away to the bench, calling out "Koren, you're up."

* * * * *

"Oh my word! Koren Udowu, who was a relative unknown just twelve months ago, has just unleashed an absolute cracker of a goal to spare Osarian bl-"

"Oh no! It's not! It doesn't count! What is going on here?!"

"Oh dear, Ayanna Barca-Carthy is absolutely furious in the dugout!"

"Well wouldn't you be? It was a great strike from Udowu, I doubt there are any others in the squad who could have twisted themselves to get that shot off from that angle. And it did look like he struck it before the whistle blew..."

"The referee is talking down a crowd of Osarians, and oh! There's a card! Red! Who's that for?"

"I think that's gone to Udowu, he's absolutely baffled here. He must have said something the ref didn't approve of. No other explanation, is there?"

"And so Osarius are reduced to ten men after the whistle, incredible. What drama!"

"There's another one! Two dismissals after the final whistle! Osarius are on the verge of going full meltdown here!"

"There's Gentile, he's stepping in. He's going to cool some heads. Mancini, too. This is where a captain earns his stripes, isn't it? They need to cool things down before it gets out of hand."

"You can guarantee there's going to be some kind of action taken after this. There's got to be."

Hustlers United

Chapter Nine: Friends, Babies, and Ceiling Fans

Responsibility. It was something that Allie Vacek had thought about a lot, on the day that she had received a speech about it from Allison Torres. According to Allison, she wasn’t responsible enough. She was barely respected by her teammates, the coaching staff were losing their trust in her rapidly because of her antics, and her lack of maturity and responsibility had given her enemies in the press something easy to exploit. Responsibility was a word that she hated, but it was one that would make or break her career. If she couldn’t find that responsibility that Allison had talked about, her time in Ceneisis would be much shorter than she had initially planned it to be. If she couldn’t find responsibility in herself, it would also hurt her family. At least that was what Allison had told her.

Allie was losing sleep for the next few nights, because of that speech. Even with Eshe next to her in bed, she couldn’t do anything to get sleep. The day after she had received the speech, she had showed up to practice looking like hell, after only getting two hours of sleep. Now, it was late at night and even though Eshe was sleeping, she couldn’t get herself to fall asleep. Too much was on her mind, and Allison’s words lingered in her memory, and she couldn't get herself to fully relax at all that day. Eventually, even though it was the middle of the night, she rolled out of bed and got dressed and decided to direct her energy towards something useful.

She sat down in the living room in the softest chair and started penning the lyrics to her next song, finally putting down the ideas from her head onto paper. Her music career had taken the backseat to her football career recently, but the record label still wanted her to get working on her next album to keep the momentum going from her debut one, which had sold fairly well. Maybe the sheer amount of work that she was expected to do in multiple careers was the reason why Allie was struggling. To everyone else, it looked like she was on top of it all, but her inner circle could see that she was worn out.

A few minutes went by as she penned the lyrics in a notepad, and a few minutes turned into ten minutes which turned into a half hour. She set the pen down and stood up, walking to the kitchen to get something to drink before going back to work. When she opened the fridge, there were several bottles of alcohol that were tempting her, but she fought back against her urge to drink from one of those and she instead grabbed a can of soda and went to sit back down. Getting drunk tonight and hungover the next morning wouldn’t go over well with the team. Not after the speech she had just listened to, which had been partly related to her addictions messing with her career. Her alcoholism was hurting her in the eyes of both the staff and the team, and she was trying to cut back on the drinking even though she knew that she would never be able to quit it completely.

“You’re not in Lane anymore,” she mumbled to herself, looking over her notebook. This was one of those days when she wished that she still was a Lane Jet, and she wished that she was still the campus hero at her high school, the place where she could do whatever she wanted without facing many consequences. Her football skills had made her larger than life over there, making others bend or break the rules for her and convincing them to tolerate her off the pitch antics because of how great she was when she played. Now that she was with other professionals, and she wasn’t the undisputed star of the team like she had been in youth football, she was expected to follow the rules and meet the expectations just like everyone else was, and nobody was going to bend those rules to make things easier on her. It was a miracle that the club had been this patient with her at this point, because there were some clubs that would already be regretting their investments and trying to send her on loan to sort her issues out.

Allie was pulled out of her thoughts when her phone started ringing, with the ringtone that she had reserved for Blaze Chrzanowska. She quickly took the phone out of her pocket and swiped to answer the call, wondering why her friend from the national team was calling her this late at night. Blaze played in Abanhfleft too, for Rosenpfelblatz City Ladies, so there was no time zone delay that would cause Blaze to call her in the middle of the night. Something unusual had to be up, and Allie’s tone was curious when she spoke up after answering. “Blaze… Why are you calling me in the middle of the night? Is everything okay?”

“Yeah. Yeah, everything is fine,” Blaze stated, but her tone was strange. This was weird, very weird. Allie couldn’t put a finger on the reason why she was worried, but something about Blaze’s tone didn’t seem right and she didn’t believe her at all when she said that everything was fine. “Did I wake you up? I’m sorry, I could call someone else-”

“No, I couldn’t sleep. I decided to put my energy to work doing something useful, so I was working on my music. But you know that I’m always here to talk,” Allie answered, her tone cautious and her words coming slow. “What’s up? I guess you couldn’t sleep either?”

“I have a lot on my mind right now, so yeah. I just want to talk to someone, and Marco didn’t answer and Ake didn’t, either. I think they’re sleeping now because of the time difference. I tried calling one of my coaches, Matt Cave, and he’s sleep also. And Isa and Marfa Kirilenko both didn’t answer my calls. You’re the only one that’s picked up so far,” said Blaze. Her tone was still… Strange. There wasn’t something obviously wrong, but her voice wasn’t like it usually was. “Allie, can I ask you to do some things for me? I understand if you don’t want to, but-”

“No, what is it? Like I said, I’m here for you if you need anything. I know it’s been tough on you for the past few weeks.”

“I want you to tell Marco that I’m very, very sorry. Tell him that none of this is his fault and that everything that went wrong between us is on me,” Blaze blurted out. “Tell my teammates that none of this is on them, either, and tell my parents that this isn’t their fault. This isn’t anyone’s fault but my own, and I want to make sure that everyone knows that-”

“Blaze, what’s going on?” asked Allie, interrupting because she couldn’t contain her curiosity for any longer. “Something isn’t right. Your voice is off, what you’re saying doesn’t make sense, and you sound nervous as hell. Is everything okay, really? Or are you just saying that?”

“Everything is really fine. Let’s just change the subject, alright? Since you think I’m sounding weird right now.”

“Where are you? Look, something is wrong, and if you don’t talk about it, I’m going to come over. It’s not like I can sleep tonight, anyway. Can you just explain to me what’s wrong and why you sound like this? You’re really worrying me right now.”

Blaze paused before giving an answer. “I’m sorry, Allie. Really. I lied, and you’re right. Everything isn’t okay right now, but it’s going to be better soon and I’m going to be somewhere better… I just wanted to call you and talk to you one more time, since nobody else that I’m close to is up right now. I just wanted one last conversation with my best friend, is that so bad? And I wanted to let you know that this isn’t your fault, either. You’ve been a great friend to me, don’t let anyone say otherwise. So don’t go blaming yourself-”

“Blaze, where are you?” Allie repeated, speaking sharply as she tried to get her friend to speak coherently and tell her what the hell was going on. But she was starting to get an idea of what was happening, and she hoped that she was wrong but at the same time, she was almost sure that she was right. “Calm down and talk with me. Please. I’m coming over, don’t do anything until I’m there, alright?”

There was another pause on the line while Blaze tried to decide what to say. “Allie, you really don’t want to come over. I don’t think you’re going to like what you’re going to see. Trust me with this. Just keep talking, alright? I’m standing on a chair right now, and if you stop talking, I’m going to assume that you’re calling the cops or calling one of my teammates to come stop me, and I’m going to kick the chair out. Don’t go anywhere. Just stay where you are and talk to me, okay?”

“That’s fine,” Allie said as carefully as she could, realizing that her prediction was correct. Blaze had indeed been through so much that she was ready to quit life entirely right now. Her first suicide attempt had been botched, interrupted by Marco Saint Paul. This time, she had planned it out to make sure that she wouldn’t be stopped in the same way. And even though Allie wanted to get help for her, there was no way to do that right now. The only thing she could do was go along with Blaze’s instructions and try to talk her down. “Let’s talk about Marco. I know you said that this isn’t his fault, but is the baby the reason why you want to do this?”

“Is it the whole reason? No. Is it part of the reason, a big part even? Of course. I’m barely an adult and now I’m going to be expected to raise a kid that I don’t want,” Blaze replied. “I never meant to get pregnant! And especially not with Marco Saint Paul’s baby girl! You know it’s going to be a girl, right? He says he wants to name her Marcia, because he would’ve named the baby after himself if it was a boy but that didn’t work out. Like I said, I never wanted this! Maybe someday, but not at this age and not with him.”

“How did it happen? When you say that you never wanted this, do you mean that he…?”

“You’re asking if he raped me? No. Marco is many things, but a rapist isn’t one of them. I made my own choice to keep messing around with him even though we aren’t dating anymore, and I paid the price for it,” Blaze sighed, before taking a deep breath. “I was never able to let go of him completely. Hell, we never even officially broke up. We just got more and more distant as we started hanging with different crowds and our careers took us different places. He went to Emerald City and then Castle, and I went to Rosenpfelblatz and that was the beginning of the end of our relationship. But like I said, something about him kept bringing me back, even if we weren’t dating. I tried to keep this from happening, you know. I hope you don’t think that-”

“No, I never said that this was your fault. Sometimes you can’t control what happens.”

“Yeah, well, like I was saying… You know how they say that birth control is ninety nine percent effective? Well, I just happened to be in the unlucky one percent of customers that it doesn’t work for,” Blaze snapped, sounding angry even though her anger wasn’t directed at Allie. “And now, because of that, I’m stuck with a pregnancy when I’m supposed to be nearing the years that will make or break my career. How the hell am I going to make it as a player if I’m pregnant now and if I’m going to be taking care of a baby when these nine months of hell are finally over? It’s not like I’m with someone, and hell, my chances of finding a partner went down about one hundred percent as soon as I got pregnant. Nobody wants to be with someone who has a kid from another relationship. Even if Marco decides that he wants to help raise his daughter, there isn’t much that he can do from all the way in Redvale. There’s a shitton of goalkeepers here at Rosen, and all of them are going to be sizing me up because they’ll realize soon that there’s no way I can beat any of them in a position battle. Like this, I’m not even going to be higher on the depth chart than Demi Simonides, that girl from Ross that got cut by four or five clubs before making it here…”

“Calm down, I’m sure your teammates care about you enough to not try to push you off of the roster as soon as you have the baby,” said Allie, doing her best to put on a reassuring voice. She was terrible at this, though. Usually, she was the one who needed to be reassured that things weren’t as bad as they seemed. “Have you talked to your team staff about it already? It’s an all female team that you’re playing on, so I’m sure they’ve dealt with pregnancies in the past. You might be out for now, but it’s not impossible to rehab from. There’s plenty of great female players that have had kids during their careers and came back from it successfully.”

“Yeah, I’ve talked to the staff. They have some people on the medical staff that are supposed to be experts at these situations, but I doubt that they’ll be able to help much. You have to believe me, Allie, the other goalkeepers are all sizing me up to see if they can use this to move up the depth chart. I had a chance of taking over as the number one backup with a chance to move up to become the starter, and now, I’m sidelined until I actually have the baby and then rehab from the pregnancy,” Blaze said, her voice calming down slightly. “I’m still getting paid, but at this point, my career is taking as big of a hit as if I wasn’t making anything. Being able to play is more valuable than making money. What am I going to do when I’m better and I find myself at the bottom of the team sheet?”

“Look, I’m not going to let your career tank over this, alright? I have a really good agent with a lot of connections and I also have some friends that have connections across different leagues, who can set you up with a decent contract at a big club in a country like Redvale or Nordskania. If it’s your career that you’re worried about… Then please don’t kill yourself, because I can fix that for you if it’s really important to you. I can beg my friend’s mom, who’s a manager in Redvale, to bring you to her club and make sure that you get playing time. I’m sure she’d accept you once she finds out about your situation, she’s really into helping unlucky players,” explained Allie. “And I still think you can make it at Rosen-”

“Are you sure about that?” Blaze asked, before stopping abruptly as she started to say something else. Allie could hear movement in the background, and she could notably hear the sound of a door opening and another voice. That was strange, because Allie had obeyed Blaze’s instructions and hadn’t tried to get anyone else to come help. There was talking, and then the voices rose and it turned to shouting. Allie couldn’t tell who else was there, but the person had a female voice and a Fleftic accent, leading to her thinking that they had to be one of Blaze’s teammates. Someone had heard the shouting and came to investigate, and apparently, Blaze hadn’t locked her door. The players mostly lived in one apartment block, and someone next door to her must have been awoken by the noise. “You lied, Allie! You said you wouldn’t call anyone!”

“How would I call your teammates? I’ve been talking with you ever since you told me to keep talking-”

Before Allie could finish, there was more noise. A bump that came over the phone line quite clearly. And shouting, lots of shouting. For four or five seconds, there was nothing but one person talking in a panicked voice, and then there was a loud crash that Allie could hear clearly even though she was still only listening through the phone. “Blaze, what the hell is happening? Blaze… Blaze, are you there?”

“Yeah,” Blaze said eventually, her voice calm in a strange way considering the circumstances. “I had the rope tied to the fan on the ceiling, and the whole thing just came down next to me. I’m fine,” she added. “Look, someone is here now, I have to go… I’ll talk to you later, Allie. Thanks for being willing to just talk, like I wanted.”

Blaze ended the call before Allie could say anything in reply, and Allie pocketed her phone and grabbed her head in frustration. By now, Eshe had woken up and she was standing in the living room, and Allie realized that she’d probably listened to the whole conversation. “Who was that? And what was that conversation about?”

“You don’t want to know,” sighed Allie. “It involves my friend, an unwanted baby, and… A rope and a ceiling fan. I hope you don’t mind staying here by yourself for the next few days, because it looks like I’m going to have to take an unplanned visit to Rosenpfelblatz.”

Only later, Johan Valkeniers would contemplate about the motivations of his assistant, Ronny, to leave a print of exactly that article from the Spaam Sports Weekly on his desk, but as he read it, it seemed just a regular part of the preparation files for the upcoming confrontation. One that would, contrary to all prequalifying predictions, be instrumental in the race for the World Cup in group 4. As manager of an overperforming squadron, one would think that Johan felt more confident than ever and yes, that was a mark as his cocky attitude and wisenose quips were an instrumental part of any confrontation between him and the outer world.

The contrary was truth, however, when he let his eyes wander on the article. Apart from an interesting piece on their clinical victory over the Socialist Northern Islands, it shed its light over the expectations of the second leg off the qualifiers. As could be expected, the Spaamians made clever use of their prequalifying rank to wear the cloth of modesty, foreseeing a heroic demise on the road after a vigilant battle. That in itself wasn’t what switched the atmosphere from Johan, even if he wasn’t the right man for decorum or humility, but merely that as a consequence, someone else had to be appointed as the main candidate for the much coveted second ticket. And that that someone had to be Veldgouwen.

Don’t think that Valkeniers did not appreciate the kind words, even to the contrary. As stubborn as he was, he appreciated chivalry in football, something which he considered as the knighthood of our century. What did strike him was the points prediction set up by the magazine, which he presumed to have a weekly print. Their 5-2-2 scorecard so far was already beyond the wildest expectations and having to read forecasts which aimed no lower than twenty points in nine games brought a mild shiver in his spine. As he personally expected to reap nothing at Royal Stadium and would be more than satisfied to keep a point at home against the seemingly lackluster yet efficient troops from Steve Thompson, such requires nineteen out of twenty-one. A nearly perfect record, as good as no room for mistakes whilst visiting Kandorith or up against strong sides such as Kaboomlandia or Spaam.

He sighed, mainly because his main worry was not focused around the quality of the team. Apart from the confrontations against the two top-tier opponents, the defensive line only had to accept a single goal from the Phoenix’ Ben Bradbury in seven games. Simon Oberink hadn’t been as heralded as he deserved for his performances, but his first months where the number one on his back was more than decoration had been more than stellar. Additionally, the four in front of him had started to deliver on their experience. Moreover, it seemed as if the offensive recipe had finally fallen in place with Masschelin and Schaepdryver finding one another reasonably well against Hirvania, being a driving force in the efficient win.

But even if, and of course, the above said progress hinged on a huge if-clause as it remained unsure whether they could continue that line, his squad was physically able to shock the world of football with an unexpected level of play, Johan feared much more for the state of mind of his formation. And articles like this one did not exactly contributed much. It was one thing to bring home admirable results as the sympathetic underdog, knowing that everything better than a loss would get the applause it deserved. Taking on the struggle for glory knowing that all eyes are on you, whilst keeping one eye to what happens behind your back as the multitude of teams aims to bring you down… That’s a different thing.

It was exactly that department of the pitch, the head, where Johan Valkeniers couldn’t admit that he fell too confident in his boys. Not that he would say so in public, no sir, but there were too many clouds that kept them from performing according to their possibilities, he believed. That his own set of strikers were not assured yet that their partnership not only was instrumental but also simply worked. That those who were expected to behave as a captain for their seniority, failed to pick up that responsibility and that Jim Decubber, the one willing to do so, was a bit too rash for comfort.

But more importantly, the slightly racist elephant in the room, the nearly hostile feud between Derk Breydels and Yassin Tarki. As much as he hated to do it, Valkeniers knew what was the root cause. He actually could figure out what to do to stamp out the smoldering fire which wrecked silent havoc but the question was, did he want to? With Vandertoren out for a few more games, both key figures in the, so far only verbal, battle were important elements in the best eleven he could put on the grass. And even if he would punish Breydels, would it be apart from desirable also the definitive solution? The internal row went far beyond the right defender but keeping all those involved on the bench would force him to put on his own shoes again to field a complete eleven.

Johan Valkeniers hesitated and decided that he’ld do nothing. Neither were his regular mode of acting and, adding up to all the other things, that might have been what pissed him off most.

"Well that sucked."

"Yeah it really sucked."

"4 Goals."

"Yep."

"I mean we really should have seen that coming."

"That said they almost scored more goals than all the other teams combined."

"Yeah."

"Still 2nd best defensively."

"But barely."

"True."

"Really should have done better."

"Yeah, but we really saw it coming."

"Qualifying hopes pretty much dashed."

"That's to be expected though."

"Could always surprise in the second half."

"Doubt it."

"Yeah, doubt it."

"Oh well. There is always next year."

"Accents of Natanians and Nosts part 5,the Central Natanian Accent.
The Central Natanian accent developed along the Central Nost accent, near to the acient city of Nets-se-Lada.A curious thing about the Central Natanian is that sometimes it's said price as 'pras',without the i.Words like fool and pool are pronounced /ʊ.o/ instead of the tradicional /u.o/,pen is pronounced with a more closed vowel, while singer and comma are pronounced with a vowel almost as open as the vowel in lad,an unusual characteristic among Natanian dialects is the distinction of the words put and putt;the vowel in words like bird can be either short or long."

-That was other episode of the series about the accents of our country.
-Now,football news.Natanians and Nosts lose 2x0 to the Unified Sunrise Islands at the Stadion Nacional,a result that's considered good, given the fact that they are the current world champions.
"Natanians and Nosts started the game on the deffensive,João Foster made a great deffence after a shoot by Tomoyo Nishidake, one minute later Kevin Stabb also tried, but the ball was too high.At the tenth minute Ion Cáius Ademélsson made a great shoot, but Sami Saari sent it to a corner.,Laço Tralito crossed to Rato Ret,but Rolandinho Juliano stole the ball ran untill the midfield, dibbred three deffenders passed to Rolando who dribbled more five Natanian palyers shoot, but João made other good deffence. At the 37th minute,Allan Texugo tried a long shot, but Mihai Júlio da Silva stopped the ball before it reach the goal.At the 43rd minute Natan Nínnio Gonçalo sent the ball to the goalbar, when it returned Gabriel Ápio Silva dribbled one Sunrisian deffender, before shooting straight to the hands of Sami Saari.
Both teams changed to the second period. At the tenth minute,Ruby had the ball,he passed to Paranauê,Paranawê dribbled Johann Mureșan-Antonescu,crossed to Guillaume LeLeverdusoleilian who made an overhead kick and scored the first Sunrisian goal.Five minutes later Natan Nínnio Gonçalo attempted from outside the penalty area, but the ball went too rightwards. The second goal from the Sunrise Islands came when Rolando managed to kick and cover the goalkeeper, but João Foster touched the ball and it went over the goalbar;at the corner Marcos Tarquínio Ivanov sent the ball away, but Rolando dribbled seven Natanian players before passing to Werickley Safadão who scored. After this the only thing that deserves special attention was this foul,37m away that Sami Saari deffended the shoot by Natan Nínnio Gonçalo."
-Teams preparing during the World Cup Qualifiers.Fehér F.C striker Ion Caeso Antonescu was transferred to Mhedruli F.K.

OOC - replying to this.

Most Gracious Elune,

I acknowledge and honour your letter to myself and my friend Simeone. Your words of wisdom are always most welcome in my halls of counsel.

These are dark times for those who can see beyond the veil of the multiverse, and see the loathsome eldritch forms that lurk on the edges of what you term the Eternal Realm. There can be no total hiding from the impact of the current temporary reality interaction. Madness shall haunt the dreams of some realities; nameless rites shall be performed in the service of unnamed horrors; fell deeds shall fall upon many worlds.

Yet these things cannot be stopped. In the grander scheme, of which so few of us are aware, we know that this is part of the natural order of the multiverse; for a brief time some realities shall experience unutterable horrors, yet these things can no more be stopped than can tides be held back on those worlds that have sufficiently large satellites to cause tides (I was going for a shorter tidal metaphor there, but Simeone insisted on pedantry). At the same time, it is surely meet and right to seek to protect the weak from the depredations of the strong; or, to put it another way, to protect the innocence of the Hundred Acre Wood from the loathsome howls of the Great Old Ones, to protect the good in Narnia from the evil of Rl'yeh.

You and I see the multiverse in different ways, and use a different language to describe its marvels; our colleagues and cohorts take very different forms. Yet we both share the same goal: to protect the Eternal Realm.

Perhaps here there are opportunities to work together.

I have brought my team together to protect the realities represented by that team from the worst horrors of the temporary reality interaction. I cannot shield them completely - and tomorrow we shall hear a chilling tale from Captain Hook about the Boy Who Refused to Die - but I can protect them from the worst. And see how they respond to my protection! 41 goals in the first half of qualifying alone! I hope you will forgive me a moment of something resembling pride as I reflect on their accomplishments on this front.

Yet my powers, while vast are not unlimited; through the Imperial Panopticon, I can see everywhere and anything, but I cannot be everywhere.

There are perhaps other worlds, other realities, impacted by the reality interaction that I cannot protect; where death, danger, and destruction await the unfortunate. Perhaps you, most gracious Elune, and Chell, Goddess of Chaos and Order, Wielder of the Scimitar of Silence, and Ruler of The Void, could help seek out those realities I cannot protect during this difficult event, and seek to protect them as I protect the realities represented in my team?

I would be more than happy to share information from the Dreamed Realm on those realities that might be most in need of protection, and of course would not presume to tell you how and when to proceed with that protection - though equally I am always at your service should you seek my counsel.

I await your reply, and wish every success to those who take your guidance and venerate your radiance.

Sincerely Yours, as Ever Your Most Humble Acquaintance,

Juan Tzimices

Sanitation Workers clean up 3 tons of litter following "Environmentalist March"

Image
Pro-Environment protestors left behind a mess in Scott City on Saturday
SCOTT CITY - Following a day in which Environmentalists marched together in Scott City to demand that the Constitutional Assembly include pro-environment provisions in the new constitution, sanitation workers were left cleaning up over three tons of litter.

Rafferty Wallace, head of the Scott City Sanitation Services Administration, was notably furious as clean up operations began. "I woke up this morning expecting business as usual, but thanks to these so called 'Environmentalists', today's going to be everything but business as usual." SCSSA was forced to call upon almost forty workers, many of whom had been looking forward to spending the weekend off, to clean up the streets of downtown Scott City. Sanitation workers were paid time and half for their services, and clean up operations took over ten hours to complete. All in all, Mr. Wallace expects the total cost of the clean to amount to around a quarter of a million dollars. He called the actions of the marchers, "completely unacceptable" and expects the sincerity of the Green Party, currently members of the Coalition of the Left, to be called into question.

George Bourdillon, leader of the Green Party, member of the Constitutional Assembly with the Coalition of the Left, and organizer of the "Environmentalist March" apologized late Saturday, stating that some marchers had taken their "demonstration of the negative effects of litter" too far. He reiterated his calls for members of the Constitutional Assembly to include language in the Constitution that would enshrine the protection of the environment as a basic principle of future Darmeni governments.

Even couches were collected following the "Environmentalist March"

Provisional President Tor Tong Lee, although not directly referencing the March or Bourdillon's campaign, stated late Saturday night that the protection of the environment, although important, was not a constitutional matter, and should be left up to the elected governments of the future. Progress has been swift on the drafting of the Constitution, especially after the scrapping of an early proposed draft that was deemed "too extensive". Provisional President Lee has repeatedly stated that he expects to deliver a final draft of the Constitution to the Governing Council of the Confederation as early as the end of October, and that the implementation of the document will likely occur on the first day of 2037.

9 Kinzenland 9 1 2 6 9 19 −10 5
10 Huri de Wintre 9 0 0 9 3 28 −25 0

So that's how the table sits after the first round of matches in the qualifying cycel for World Cup 77 and how can we assess Kalumba's performance at this stage. Above average is properly the general consensus amongst pundits and supporters of The Kudus after winning five of our opening nine matches to sit 4th in the table.

Qualification as usual looks to be much more a pipe dream than a reality, but to sit behind only legendary teams like Starblaydia and emerging titans like Ceni and Schottia is truly an achievement and while their have been humbling results, a 4-1 home defeat to Ceni chief amongst these it is nothing to be ashamed of.

Considering the team only returned to international competition in the last cycle the work done by Terrence Outbourne is outstanding, and the team are really doing our nation proud. But perhaps the best thing to come out of the tournament is the presence of international teams and their supporters in the captial, Kahali. After years of terrorist atrocities it appears that the nation is finally secured and our people can live in peace.

Let us hope that the second round of matches are equally entertaining and let us pray for continued peace at home, and maybe five more wins and a solid finish to the campaign.

Princess Elsa and ROAW in Naked News Jeruselem

Elsa: This is Princess Elsa, for Naked News Jeruselem. I'm with ROAW aka Dad, to talk about World Cup 77, and Group 2.
ROAW: Hey babes
Elsa: Just ignore him sometimes
ROAW: Don't worry about her, she's like her Mum
Elsa: Leading the table ... is us, on 23 points with 7 wins and 2 losses which is not normal for us. We're usually like 2nd or 3rd
ROAW: We certainly won't be last either

Elsa: Bonesea after 7 straight wins drew and lost a game. But 22 points is something good, especially when you're 2nd
ROAW: I think we'll need to keep them at bay, they'll come back tougher in the 2nd half
Elsa: Drawkland have 16 points, with 4 wins, 1 loss and 4 draws. Some of the wins were scalps of bigger teams
ROAW: We'll need to beat that team, they can still strike at the top 2.
Elsa: Barunia is not far off on 4th, they've always been a bit ... Hot and Cold ... though. 5 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses. 3 losses, that's costly.
ROAW: They can be so good, but so ... bad at the same time

Elsa: We play them again next game too
ROAW: We need to win that one
Elsa: Darmen, what's going on! One of the faves for top 2 but 13 points. Four wins, 1 draw and four losses. Yes two were to us and Bonesea but they could be doing so much better.
ROAW: Yeah, they've just fallen off the wagon. 4 losses in 9 games is just not them.
Elsa: They have 9 games to fix this but look at the other two contenders, it's gonna be tough getting to top 3
ROAW: Given Drawkland are showing potential to be giantkillers

Elsa: Garifunya were in the running early, but have fallen off with 11 points. 4 losses but 3 wins and two draws. They aren't bad but we think they could be in the top 5
ROAW: Yes, they are doing great for their ranking still
Elsa: Quakmybish getting buried in 7th, 2 wins, 2 draws and 5 losses. Actually, they are doing well for their given rank.
ROAW: I don't see them making the top 5 at all, maybe next cup.
Elsa: Witty Penguins, 6 losses but 2 wins and 1 draw. I expect they'll get better, next cup
ROAW: Yes, I think it's too late for a comeback from where they are

Elsa: Whovian Tardisia, really making up numbers with 2 wins but also 7 losses. At least they got wins
ROAW: Worst goals conceded in the group
Elsa: Willinois, last. 1 win 2 draws and 6 losses. They can actually not be last given there's three teams who could be last.
ROAW: Yes, Quakmybush is like 1 win ahead of them. It's nothing.
Elsa: 2nd half, how to do see it
ROAW: Top 2 to stay the same, unless the other 3 in the top 5 start stealing points off the top 2

Elsa: Who's gonna be 3rd?
ROAW: I think Drawkland
Elsa: I'm thinking Barunia
ROAW: Darmen could take it too but we'll see
Elsa: Let's check top 3 of the other groups.
ROAW: This might take a while

Elsa: Group 1 is pretty close, we have only for real contenders there. But the current top 3 are my pick, I think Taeshan might be stuck in 4th behind Chromtika, Red Blackiland and Krytenia.
ROAW: I agree, but Taeshan could steal 3rd.
Elsa: Group 3 is just too hard to pick. Valladare for sure is the best. Then we got this clump of 4 teams, I can't pick 2nd or 3rd at the moment.
ROAW: I think current top will be there in the end.
Elsa: Group 4 with Eura leading, but only by 3 points. Spaam and Veldgouwen and three teams. Hard to call but top 3 here might stay the same
ROAW: I think so too

Elsa: Group 5. Pasarga lead, and Super-llamaland 2nd from Nova Anglicana and then Banija. Top 2 settled for me. 3rd spot is up for grabs
ROAW: Yes, the top 4 here should stay the same for me
Elsa: Group 6, four teams who could be top 2. Turori, Eastfield Lodge, Anglatia, and Brenecia - 4 points between these teams.
ROAW: Turori will be top 2, not sure about who will join them.
Elsa: Group 7, easy ... it's the current 3. Farf, Port Christopher, and Ponyland
ROAW: Chiata aren't doing that well there in 4th.

Elsa: Group 8, Ethane will win this group. Electrum and Boring Paradise will fight for 2nd. Damuntiki and Tinhampton need to start beating those teams have any chance.
ROAW: Yes
Elsa: Group 9 and Valanora rule! Brigantii in 2nd but Sambeda are waiting. Mriin and Flardania need some luck and home 2nd and 3rd start losing points
ROAW: Top 3 here I think will remain that way
Elsa: Group 10. Osaruius looking good but not safe as Audioslavia chase as Hasznia do as well. The Great Pi, in 4th have a chance.
ROAW: I like my pies

Elsa: Funny joke dad. Group 11, Greg god guy leads with Consumar 2nd. 95x had 3rd but needs to hold from a few teams.
ROAW: Top 2 settled here
Elsa: Group 12, Vilita continue to lead with Merdedini 2nd. Savalven 3rd holding off 3 other teams.
ROAW: I think the top 2 shouldn't change but 95x is far from safe.
Elsa: Group lucky 13. Schottia still lead just over Ceni. Starblaydia 3rd but Kalumba could be in a position to take that.
ROAW: Yes, the top 2 teams in that group have not lost a game either.

Elsa: Group 14, Nephara lead Abanhfleft and Eshan. But Nordskania is close enough, Kaboomlandia has fallen off the wagon.
ROAW: No change from what I see in this group
Elsa: Group 15. Not Least and last! Islanders and Holy Empire fight for top spot. we have three teams fighting for 3rd all on 16 points.
ROAW: Top 2 here will be interesting.
Elsa: That's it for us.
ROAW: See you all later.
