Lex Talionis, Part Twenty-six

Barangay Seaside West
Riuwiee, Abanhfleft

It had taken some time, but the Huns had finally gotten the answers that they wanted from the Corsair that they had cornered when they had recaptured Fat Man’s Hangout in Barangay Sapang Bato. The Huns had turned over Fat Man’s to the Dirtbikers “as a gift of appreciation” from the Doctor, the Huns’ international president. The Corsair had black and blue all over and was missing some teeth and a pinky once the Huns were done with him, and as the Huns rode away from the bar, the last they saw of the Corsair was of the Dirtbikers throwing him out of Fat Man’s.

The Huns hadn’t expected to get something as good as what they had learned from the Corsair when they set out to retake the whole of Sapang Bato from the Wannabes, but they were going to make good use of it. The Witch had interrogated the Corsair on a whim, but it turned out that the guy knew where some of the Corsairs’ top leaders were at the moment, and it was high time that they began really letting the Wannabes know that their time was up.

Barangay Seaside West was just a few blocks away from Fat Man’s, and it was the first chunk of Corsairs territory which had actually been theirs for quite some time, and while the Huns weren’t the type to overextend themselves, the chance to take out a bunch of high-ranking Corsairs was just too good. If Pool Stick wasn’t lying or setting up the Huns for an ambush, then they would find two such people in Seaside West: Scout Jonsdottir, the Anglatian leader of the Corsairs’ female wing, and Francisco “Isko” Riviero, the Fleftic chief weapons expert of the gang. The Anglatian would make a very good present to the Huesca Cartel, while the Huns had something special planned for Isko.

The mechanic’s shop which served as the Corsairs’ local headquarters was clearly visible a mile away. Highly customized motorcycles decked out with loud, noisy exhausts and bright neon body lights milled around the shop, and the Huns knew of only one gang who rode flashy modded bikes: the Corsairs. A few Wannabes were milling around outside the shop, but they quickly ducked back inside once they saw the approaching Hun horde. It was the wisest decision that they would make that night.

The Huns parked across the street from the shop. A few bikes moved to block off the road from any potential Corsair escapees or reinforcements, and the Witch and Attila got off their bikes and strode to the middle of the road. “Francisco Riviero! Scout Jonsdottir!” the Witch called out. “Come out, come out wherever you are! We know that you’re both in there! If you both want to die quickly then I suggest you come out and give yourselves up! If you try to make us work at trying to find you then we are going to make you regret ever being born!”

“Guys, heads up, we got a door opening!” Kid called out. She and some of the other bikers got off their rides to support the Witch and Attila if ever shit hit the fan. Indeed, the front door of the shop opened, and at least four Corsairs, all armed to the teeth, stepped out first before a man and a woman followed them out. Under the pale moonlight and the lights of the bikes, the Huns could see Isko Riviero’s wide and bulky figure and Scout Jonsdottir’s short hair and tattooed arms. “What the hell are you Huns doing here?” Riviero asked. “This is our turf!”

“Boy, news sure does travel slow in your part of the world, doesn’t it?” the Witch replied. “Haven’t you heard? War has been declared between the Huns and the Corsairs! Now, like I said, if you two know what’s best for the both of you, I suggest you throw down your guns, come quietly with us, and let yourselves get killed.”

“Over my dead body, bitch!” Scout shouted.

The Witch just sniggered. “Oh, I definitely plan to do that, my Anglatian friend,” she said. “Whatever happens tonight, I will make sure that all of you Wannabes end up dead. Especially you, Isko, you fucking traitor. I’m going to make sure that there’s a special place in hell reserved just for you.”

By this time, the Witch, Attila, Scout, and Riviero were standing almost face to face with each other. All four of them could smell each other’s breaths, an altogether uncomfortable prospect for all involved. “I’m not going to tell you this again, Hun,” Scout said in a seething whisper. “Leave. Leave our turf, leave our city, leave this life!”

“Your city?” the Witch asked back in an equally low hiss. “You ain’t Riuweño, Anglatian. You and your pals have no right to call Riuwiee your city. And you, Isko, you lost your right to call Riuwiee your city when you went with Sorondo to join his band of wannabes.”

This time it was Attila who made the first move. He sucker-punched Riviero while he was still absorbing the Witch’s words, and then the Witch slammed a fist right into Scout’s nose. It was the start of yet another fistfight between the Huns and the Corsairs. The Wannabes with the long guns made to shoot at the other Huns because the risk of hitting either Riviero or Scout while shooting at Attila or the Witch was too high, but the other bikers beat them all to the draw and shot them all down. More Corsairs rushed out of the shop and ran towards the Huns, but the Huns were ready and waiting to meet them. The Huns shot at every Corsair who went out of the shop and then, once they had run out of bullets, got up close and personal and began punching and smashing up any Corsair they got their hands on.

Riviero and Scout somehow managed to disentangle themselves from the Witch and Attila, and they pulled back to where their bikes were parked. Some of the remaining Corsairs went up to their own bikes as well, and everyone stared at each other for a moment before Riviero and Scout got on their bikes, the signal for the Wannabes that it was time to get the hell out of Dodge. “Go, go, go!” Riviero shouted at his people. At least five bikes roared to life and began fleeing the shop in a cloud of thick exhaust. Their heavily customized bikes, loud and throaty exhausts, and neon lighting made them very big and visible targets for the Huns.

“Saddle up, boys and girls!” the Witch shouted. “We’re going on a Wannabe roundup! Yeehaw!” Those Huns who had dismounted their bikes quickly hopped back onto their rides and followed the Huns who had stayed by their bikes and were already chasing the fleeing Corsairs. Gunshots lit up the night as the Huns fired at the Corsairs running for their lives. The Corsairs tried firing back at the Huns, but the Huns had an easier time because they were the ones chasing and it was much easier to control a bike and fire forward at the same time instead of backward. The Huns also had bigger targets to aim for due to the Corsair habit of tricking out their bikes to be very noticeable. Soon, three Corsairs were down, having been shot dead by the Huns while riding on or after crashing their bikes.

Eventually, only Scout and Riviero remained standing, and with the Huns hot on their heels, they weren’t able to pay attention to where they were going, and they only realized that they had been trapped when more Huns appeared right in front of them. Riviero slammed hard on his brakes and allowed his bike to slide out from beneath him even as the asphalt scraped the seat of his pants and eventually rubbed his buttocks raw. Scout swerved away from Riviero and then slowed down just enough so she could dismount and make a run for it on foot, but she wasn’t able to get very far before Countess smashed an iron pipe into the back of her head, knocking her down to the ground.

Countess stopped her Harley-Davidson beside the unconscious Scout and hopped off her bike to inspect the casualty. “Hey, guys!” she called out. “I think I’ve found one of those Anglatians whom the Huescas want!”

“Is she dead?” the Witch asked. “Remember, Peña wants them alive so she could kill them herself!”

Countess bent down to check for a pulse. “She’s out cold, but still alive,” she said, and then she began running through Scout’s pockets. She took out a cellphone, which she pocketed, some loose bills of Fleftic and Anglatian money, which she also took for herself. Then Countess happened to notice a glint of silver around Scout’s neck. It was a silver Orthodox cross, and Countess made to take it, not because she was Orthodox (she was actually Catholic) but because it was silver. Silver was worth a fortune even in tiny amounts in the current economy.

Then, just as Countess was about to wrap her hands around the chain around Scout’s neck, the Anglatian’s legs suddenly went up and smashed into Countess’s chest, right on the sternum. Countess collapsed beside Scout as she had difficulty drawing breath. Scout made to run away from the scene, but Countess still had the presence of mind to grab her by the ankles and haul her back down. “Oh, no, you don’t, bitch!” Countess said, but since she still had trouble taking deep breaths, only the last word on her sentence came out of her mouth.

Scout went down hard on the ground, and Countess crawled up over her and began throwing punches and elbows on the downed Valerian as the Huns began to ground and pound the Corsair. Scout tried to shield her head from the blows, but Countess had knelt on her arms just to prevent her doing such a thing. Scout was forced to resort to smashing the toes of her boots into Countess’s back and the back of her head, and when the Corsair got really lucky and managed to clip the Hun somewhere on the top of her head, Countess groaned and stopped punching. Scout saw her opportunity and sent a haymaker right at Countess, cutting open the Hun’s upper lip. Scout pushed a dazed Countess away and got to a kneeling position to catch her breath.

Meanwhile, Countess rolled closer to her bike and finally took great big gulps of air as her lungs began to work properly once again. Behind her, she heard Scout get to her feet and call out, “Is that all you got, Hun?” Countess slowly got to her feet as well, and then her hands curled around something strapped to the side of the fuel tank of her Harley.

“The real question is, is that all you got, Wannabe?” Countess asked, and then she unsheathed the camp knife strapped on her bike and took a wild stab in Scout’s general direction. Scout jumped away from the sharp and swinging blade but the knife still caught her leather jacket and tore a large gash through them. Scout took another step back and then began running away from the scene. One of the Huns raised his pistol and began firing at Scout’s retreating form but then the Witch called out, “That’s enough, Springfield! Let her run away. Someone has to tell our Wannabe friends about what happened here tonight.”

The Witch then looked down at Isko Riviero, who was being held at gunpoint by the barrel of Attila’s Glock 17 pistol. “Now, did you really think we would forget all about you, man?” she asked Riviero as she took Attila’s place over the Corsair and aimed the long barrel of her revolver at Riviero’s forehead. “You should’ve given up when you had the chance, Isko,” she said to him in a whisper.

In a louder voice, the Witch said, “Francisco Riviero, for the crime of being a member of the Corsairs, the Huns find you guilty! For the crime of being a complete and utter failure at being part of the one percent, I find you guilty! For the crime of giving the ride priority over the rider, I find you guilty! And for the crime of being a blood traitor to the Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft by selling out to the Crows of Anglatia, I find you guilty! Your sentence is death by dismemberment. Sneaky! Steeler! Countess! Kid! Carry out this poor excuse of a biker’s sentence!”

Sneaky, Steeler, Countess, and Kid, the four highest ranking women among the Huns gathered around Riviero with the obvious exception of the Witch, surrounded the downed Corsair and began tying thick starched nylon ropes around Riviero’s wrists and ankles. The Witch wanted to add further humiliation to Riviero by having four women execute him by dismemberment. Sneaky, the president of the Huns’ Balmaceda chapter; and Steeler, the Witch’s vice president, took care of Riviero’s legs; Countess and Kid, Attila’s vice president and sergeant-at-arms respectively, tied up his arms. Once ropes had been tied around the Corsair’s ankles and wrists, the women tied off the other ends to the rear fenders of their bikes. Once they were done, the Witch took her pistol away from Riviero’s face since he had no chance of escaping now. The four women hopped onto their bikes, turned on the engines, and began taking up the slack on the ropes as they moved away and began their grisly task. Riviero felt himself being lifted off the ground as his limbs were pulled in four different directions.

Dismemberment was an old method of execution taking back to ancient times, and the Huns had decided to resurrect it for tonight. However, instead of horses, motorcycles would be doing the job of pulling the victim apart.

“Come on, Witch,” RIviero said in a pleading voice. “Don’t do this, girl. Please.”

“Too late, Isko,” the Witch said softly. “I told you, you should’ve given yourself up when you had the chance. It would have been just a little bullet to the head for you, quick and simple. But you brought this upon yourself, brother. Now you’re going to have to suffer.” It wasn’t true, though. The Witch would have had Riviero dismembered even if he had decided to give himself up like she said.

The four bikes as the ropes were stretched to their limit. Now, it was all about how long Riviero could keep himself together before the forces tore his body into pieces. The bikes roared as their riders goosed their respective throttles to add a little bit more power, and their prisoner’s body was stretched to its maximum extent. Riviero could already feel the pain beginning to build up, and he took hold of the ropes around his wrists to relieve a tiny fraction of the pressure. “Attila, Witch, please, don’t do this!” he said, but the two Huns had turned a deaf ear to his pleas.

The four bikes’ engines screamed, and smoke poured out of their rear tires, as Riviero fought against the inevitable for as long as he could. Francisco Riviero let out a loud and piercing scream which mingled with the roar of the motorcycles, and then the scream was cut short by a sickening crunching sound. Blood spurted out of the massive and ugly wounds where RIviero’s limbs had been torn out of their sockets by the force of the bikes pulling them away. All four bikes moved forward as their potential energy and momentum were converted into kinetic energy and actual movement.

“And that is the end of Isko Riviero,” the Witch said huskily.

“What do we do with the body now?” Attila asked her.

“Mail it to the Wannabes for all I care, but make sure that they get the message,” the Witch replied. “It’s ‘Get out of Riuwiee or else this will happen to you!’”

“Who gets to take the guy’s patch?”

“I think our executioners have already that question for us.” The Witch and Attila watched as Sneaky, Steeler, Countess, and Kid took the limbs tied to their bikes and began measuring them. It turned out that Kid had the longest limb as a scapula was still attached to Riviero’s right arm when it had come off, just barely beating the left leg held by Steeler. Countess congratulated Kid by tossing her knife to Kid.

“Countess, did you cut yourself with this?” Kid asked as she examined the camp knife.

“No, I didn’t. Why are you asking?”

“Because this thing’s got blood all over it,” Kid said, holding up the blade so Countess could see the dark red and nearly black blood staining the blade.

“Hmm,” Countess muttered. “I must have got more of that Wannabe than just her cuts. Well, if she does die, it’s no great loss for all of us.”

Kid shrugged and then began cutting off the laughing skull patch on the back of Riviero’s leather jacket with the camp knife. Once she was done, she held up the patch over her head to the resounding cheers of the rest of the Huns. They had taken their first Corsair scalp and were reasonably sure that they would be getting much, much more in the coming days.

The Dynamo twin teams were founded in the 1920's along with other Dynamo teams throughout the nation. They are the sports section of the national police and were originally founded as a way of keeping the policemen of the nation fit. To today, while Dynamo holds two professional teams in Novaya Russica and Sjoedrhavn, there are a number of amateur Dynamo teams throughout the nation that are filled by policemen. Therefore, Dynamo is the largest Savojar sports community, with a total of 11 different clubs and 37 adult teams. Sjoedrhavn is the biggest national branch of Dynamo, with two (semi-)professional and three full amateur teams. Dynamo Sjoedrhavn's teams follow an elaborate structure, with the top team serving as a professional squad and Dynamo II serving as a semiprofessional reserves team, playing on the top of the third league. Dynamo III, IV and V are teams completely formed out of ordinary police members, however Dynamo III often supplies the two highest teams with replacement players and occasionally with regulars. The most prominent case was Andreas Landsberg, who got to play for Dynamo II in 2005 and received a professional contract a year later, eventually playing eight games in the SFS in spring 2010.

The history of Dynamo began in 1923, when the Army regularly played tournaments among its teams. This system was copied by then-police leader Kristian Andersen. He first organised sports trainings for policemen, first obligatory in the late 1910s, then with additional voluntary training in 1923. As the program became more intensive, it became a sports club named Dynamo. Until 1928, Dynamo was officially one club with multiple teams located in different places, and only Sjoedrhavn played nationally. The other teams competed in lower tiers and faced off against other Dynamo teams in internal tournaments. As multiple teams failed to qualify for higher tiers because the rules of the league prohibited multiple teams of the same club in national leagues, the teams were split up. The first to leave was the Russican police force, who had its center in Pawlograd but moved to Novaya Russica in 1940 to get more audience attention, struggling to compete with Torpedo and RLSK for fans. But Sjoedrhavn remained the only Dynamo team to play in the top tier for every season. It never was relegated, and often competed for the title. However, Dynamo has an image of failing in the cup every year, having made the final only six times since the 1920s, but won it four times. Like Admiral and CASK, the Dynamo organisation was able to provide a semiprofessional life for its players, but was more reluctant to concentrate on success. They lacked the will of supporting the team in the way the Army teams did who were fuelled by two men carrying out a private rivalry through Admiral Storevik and CASK Thorsborg.

1934, at the highest time of the Admiral - CASK rivalry, Sjoedrhavn managed to win its first title thanks to the legendary Johan Mikkelsen, seen as the best defender of his time and one of the first defenders to regularly score goals. Mikkelsen played from 1930 to 1947, and he has never played for another team than Dynamo Sjoedrhavn. In his time, the team won three titles and its first cup in 1945 against CASK, a game that was painted by the media as the duel between CASK's striker legend Artyom Revalov and goalkeeper Ingemar Lundqvist against Dynamo's Mikkelsen and Axel Berger, the team's best scorer of the 40s. The game was played in Sjoedrhavn's national stadium, in a horrible rain and with -2°. In the "Battle of Mud", CASK first took a 3-1 lead by two Revalov goals, but then blew it late in the game. After a brutal fight ended with 4-4, the game went into overtime, where both teams scored again. Late in the game, Thomas Jonsson fouled Revalov and injured the player, according to CASK on purpose. One week later, CASK had to play without Revalov and lost 5-2, leading to Dynamo's first cup. Over the 1940s and 50s, barely anyone could compete with the CASK dynasty, but nevertheless Dynamo managed to obtain a fourth title in 1954 and a second cup in 1952. In the 1960s, Dynamo built a strong team that could compete with Aviator (today's SVV) and Partisan for the Championship, winning four more titles but never a cup. In this time, the idea of Dynamo being a strong team that would never win a cup was popularised, and the CASK fans painted their failure to win as a revenge for the 1945 cup final. In 1969, Artyom Revalov (who had become a monk of a Christian fringe branch relating to mediaeval mysticism after his retirement) claimed that until the death of Jonsson, the team would never win a cup again.

Throughout the 70s, this seemed to hold. While Dynamo could never form a big dynasty like CASK did, they also never had long draughts and won their first star in 1976, and an 11th one in '79. However, there was absolutely no way for them to the cup. In the years after Revalov's prediction, it didn't hold as the team was a usual guest to cup semifinals, but never was able to win them somehow. The most hurtful loss was the 1972 cup final, when CASK scored a goal only seconds before the final whistle to make it 2-2, and then proceeded to win 4-2 in overtime. This dramatic loss lead to riots around the stadium, and according to news reports, five Dynamo fans committed suicide after the game. They managed another final in 1975 and led 2-0 at half time. However, their opponents from Lok Jarnstad managed to turn the tide in the following time, and eventually won the game with 4-3. Audience members reported that at half time, an old man in a monk's robe appeared in the stands, claiming it was Artyom Revalov overseeing his curse. However, Revalov himself never answered to those reports and the monk is not to be seen in any recordings or pictures. Going into the 1980s, Dynamo suffered a little from transfer restrictions, even though it never affected them in the amount that CASK was affected. Being unable to move players through the organisation, the 1980s remain the least successful decade of Dynamo with only one title in 1983. However, Dynamo was never in a crisis as much as other teams were and managed to keep a high position in most seasons. In 1989, the team finally made a cup final again. In the week before the match, Thomas Jonsson died aged 78 from a stroke, and the squad played with black bands to memorise him. The match was played in conditions resembling those of the 1945 final, and Dynamo played a very tight game against FK Torpedo. This time, it is recorded that Revalov, who was born and raised in Pawlograd, was present in the stadium. After 90 minutes, it was 1-1 with Dynamo struggling hard not to receive a deadly blow in the last minutes. After the break, striker Pekka Rautanen had removed the black band from his arm, and it was him who got and scored a penalty shot in overtime, therefore bringing the cup to Dynamo Sjoedrhavn for the first time in 44 years.

The 90s then were Dynamo's greatest decade. Rautanen had been forgiven the removal of the band commemorating Jonsson, and led the team into great battles against Johan Nyström's ASK Landsmark. The police team went on to win most of them, winning their 13th title in 1991 and adding four more until 1998. Going into the new century, the team always remained a strong force based on its culture of professionalism, strong attackers and its willingness to engage in new developments. Additionally, the police force remained well-funded, which they used to attract many good players. 2002, the 18th title came to Sjoedrhavn and 2003, they finally won another cup. Dynamo managed to stay relevant throughout the next years and won title number 19 in 2006, and when their stadium was rebuilt in 2008, the team thanked the city in the inaugurational 2008/09 season by bringing home title number 20. Since they added their second star, Dynamo has nto won another title but always remained close, finishing second twice since then.

DYNAMO NOVAYA RUSSICA

Dynamo Novaya Russica, or short DNR, was founded as Dynamo Pawlograd in 1928 when the original Dynamo had to be split up to allow every branch to be promoted. DNR had been the team that required that rule given its success in previous second-tier seasons, and it split as soon as it was allowed to. Given the less centralist approach of the Police, most of Dynamo's leadership was Russian. This was important because at the time, many Nordic Savojars were somewhat suspicious of Russians and their teams, leading to many good players from other multi-branch organisations, especially Torpedo, being shipped away early. Dynamo did the same thing only for players that had proven truly strong, but nevertheless their Russica branch never really lived up to Dynamo Sjoedrhavn. The capital team was usually the one with more budget, and often their affiliation made it hard for them to fill up the stadium. This means that Dynamo NR was fairly irrelevant for most of its earlier history, and like ASK Landsmark only got a bigger drive once the team managed to break away from constraints of the main team. In its first years, DNR's biggest achievements were the 1939 cup final, the third place in the league 1935 and two victories in the late 1920s intra-Dynamo tournaments, when they were not a formally independent club yet.

1940 the team moved away from Pawlograd, where immigrant Savojars often migrated due to the naval base of the city and supported Torpedo, while Russians were unlikely to support the hated police team and preferred the native RLSK, led and supported by the Russican government. Of course, said government was also supportive of Savojarna as a whole and the central government, but often supported Russian interests more than the police, seen as "foreign". Therefore, the audience situation was difficult in Pawlograd and the move to Novaya Russica, where there was no professional team before, was a move of liberation. Now faced with much higher incomes, DNR could improve faster and was rewarded with a successful period in the 1940s that was only dampened due to CASK's dominance in the era. This meant that DNR had to wait for its first title and its first "golden generation" around Vladimir Smichov was never able to win the League. Nor were they able to win a cup as CASK defeated them twice in a final. Improvements came slowly but steady, and as CASK's power eventually dwindled, the team was ready to take their chance. Smichov and his team had long gone, but in 1960, before the ping-pong of Dynamo Sjoedrhavn, Aviator and Partisan really took off, DNR's captain Dmitry Stefanov could raise the first title in the team's history into Novaya Russica's night sky. In the later 60s, the first cup followed after a 0-1 victory over Partisan in the 1968 cup final.

This gave a push to the team, but unfortunately for DNR, others had improved as well and the 1970s were not truly their decade again thanks to CASK power. It seemed to get better towards the end of the 70s when a group of young Russian and Finnish players, emigrants from Sumanen due to work in Russica Savojar, became the core of a new DNR youth team. But then it was announced that the transfer system would be revised, and in the system of the times, which gave very little power to clubs, Dynamo Sjoedrhavn convinced most of them to move to the capital before the 80s restrictions were imposed. This meant no title for Novaya Russica in the 70s, and so they moved on to the next years with a overaged team. Only during the 80s could they rebuild, winning their second cup in 1983. Landsmark and Thorsborg's battle of giants excluded the Dynamo team from winning a second title, but then the 1990 season saw both of them dropping a surprising amount of points early on. In a unexpected run forward, Dynamo stayed in contention throughout the season. A game on the third-last match day had to decide, and it decided in favour of DNR who had beaten Landsmark 3-1 at home, giving them a four point lead that they held on to. Complete separation of teams happened in the 90s, greatly facilitating DNR's job compared to Sjoedrhavn. The introduction of player contracts made it easier to hold on to talents for some longer, and this lead to more power for Novaya Russica. Going into the 2000s, there was another title in 2004 in a dramatic ending - CASK blew a secure title in the last weeks - and finally in 2012 and 2013, when DNR managed to defend the title for the first time in its history.

The team has experienced another push forward when the Arena Dynamo was inaugurated 2014. This modern stadium hosts the often spectacularly loud ultras of DNR as well as many families, with a special security concept keeping blocks apart. It was the first arena in Savojarna to have a completely closable roof and the country's first arena equipped with a new, now standard entrance system. Novaya Russica benefits from being the only team in the city and hosts a passionate audience. A speciality of the old arena was that space constraints forced teams to enter through two different entrances, facing each other when entering the pitch. In reminiscence of the old arena, this feature was kept in the new stadium, even though this one holds the possibility of the teams entering at the same place if required for international games. Otherwise, while the stadium is new, architects tried to focus on football and avoid gimmicks. This was clearly appreciated by the fans of the game, who voted Arena Dynamo the best stadium built after 2000 in a recent poll.

That sea trip had been very common for miss Lynette Bourbon.
A life dedicated to managing even if her age didn't show it, the fact that her hands managed some of the greatest players of the Sunrise was still a reason to be proud.
And just like that, she was also becoming very used to the long sea trip from Western Sunrise to Valanora.
The Sunrisians hated the idea of traveling on plane to the Di Bradini Cup.
They always thought the sea was a sign of good luck.
In a way, the natives too were used to seeing that colorful row of Lapras pulling a boat behind them.

The Sunrisian team was certainly weirder that year.
Crimson LaRusso, former WGPC driver, had been picked as a happy thought by Bourbon, although she wasn't very sure if the former driver was any sort of serious about it.
The Matthewsianian Five (Bitoca, Chapéuzinho Vermelho, Claudinei, Nego do Jordel and Phillippe Dhybron) were there as well, a sign of Matthewsiania being slowly accepted into the Sunrisian realm.
Two of the Juhász family found their way in, Áubby and Ike, two promising defenders and former street players who had just signed with home teams as well.
"The Pride of Childrenville", Leona and Leo, two cyborg players who had already shown some promise at the lower levels were now featuring at the Teenagers from Mars' squad.
Claudine Pawston, currently playing at the Major League Youth Soccer, more specifically for Cloud Park, was also a surprise addition and being Half-Purrloin was also something new as well.
Safira Gatuna and Giovanna Giovinco joined Jagi Atari's Nekojin ranks.
And then there was...

"Enenra." A white-haired girl said to the hotel receptionist. The air near her formed into small smoke puffs without any smell. "I'm an Enenra."
Juliet Vrbada was still in a bit of a shocker over being picked for the National Team.
She was a native of the Edenias, born during the War that eventually caused both sides to fall and then get swallowed by the Sunrise Islands.
More important than that, though, she had powers she didn't exactly know very well.
Instead of the usual Edenian, figuring they had to use their powers to fight, Juliet tried to live a normal girl life.
And now, she was on the national team.
Go figure.
Tails... Watch out, you're gonna crash, aaaaah!

She had never been so furious her entire life.

It had been the last team meeting of the AOCAF cycle - after they had lost to Krytenia rather badly. The team had decided to meet a week later as a final administrative and team bonding thing before heading to their respective clubs until the next World Cup Cycle. She herself had her flight to Starling booked, a life in the Nepharim League waiting.

She sure as hell hadn't expected this dagger to the heart to come from such an unexpected source.

Not their Manager.

Not Amos.

"So, after talking it over in detail with both the new Chromatik Government Planning Committee and the Chromatik Football Federation, I've decided to step down," Amos was explaining, "And try to see if I can get a job elsewhere. This team has grown to be bigger than I can handle. You guys need someone that can handle the public side of things and represent both the nation and the team in equal measure. I can't do that. I'm not equipped to do that. I hope you understand."

She looked around the room at their dejected faces. Nikolai was stoic. Luuk looked dumbfounded. Erika, a bit more caught by surprise, a single tear rolling. Meagan had her head in her hands. Zlastica had her hands balled into fists. Gabriella looked shocked. Trenn was avoiding eye contact. The air grew heavy with a sense of foreboding and dread. Never in a million years had they thought this would happen. Not after all that this team had gone through. Not after Franscesca... Not after finally winning the country back... Not after working themselves into the international limelight...

Next thing she knew, Alyss had her hand, and was squeezing it.

"Why wasn't I invited to the Committee meeting?" She demanded of Amos. "I have a say in there. Why wasn't I there?"

"They thought it'd be best if you weren't involved, as your input would be biased," Amos explained, her eyes imploring her to understand.

But she didn't want to. All she felt was betrayal. Trust shattered. Not their leader, not the one who had brought out the best in all of them, not the one who she had had amazing conversations with, who had told her to embrace Alyss, embrace the future, embrace who she was...

She turned, threw Alyss's hand aside, and ran out of the room, ran out of the building...

Into an ice-cold Chromatik City winter rainstorm.

And there, she let the rain numb things away.

Trust was not easy for Kéìrâ Andísorí.

And right now, everything just... Hurt.

Torgos Tribune ~ Youth Movement

Pasargan youth products for the last two decades have been among the best that the world has to offer, that these prospects also turn into good to great players as they develop has helped lead Pasargan players to being coveted by some of the best clubs in the world. Clubs from Audioslavia, Valanora, Nephara, and more all look at Pasarga youth players when scouting new players to augment their clubs. While it is a great amount of honor and respect to be having these magnificent clubs from tremendous leagues to be looking at our players, it also means that the domestic talent in the SuperLiga gets diluted. Which is not to say that there is not a good amount of good youth players in the SuperLiga, rather that they seem to be leaving the shores of the dual islands more often than staying home, leading to a small decline in the SuperLiga's stature.

However Tobias Möller seems to be taking a different approach to that problem as he has selected his squad for the upcoming U21 World Cup that is held bi-annually in Valanora. Rather than choose those players that have made it abroad for the backbone of the squad, he has selected a predominantly domestic based squad, with just six of the twenty-three players selected not playing in the SuperLiga. Möller's idea seems to be that bringing them into the national pool at an early level and while they are still playing in the domestic league will provide the incentive players need to stay in Pasarga and keep building up the SuperLiga. Naturally not all players will buy into the idea but if enough of them do, it could change not only the way that the SuperLiga progresses but also the future of the National Team.

Möller is no stranger to both playing in the SuperLiga as well as playing abroad, having moved to Polar Islandstates during the prime of his career, a move that many in Pasarga initially treated as if it was an act of treason. Perhaps that experience has helped shape his strategy for this tournament and his selection, wishing to spare too many of these players from the same sort of treatment that he received. Though a lot has changed in the twenty years since Möller made his move to the Polarian league and to now when he is managing the national team. There is not the same sort of stigma generated by those in Pasarga when it comes to foreigners and moving abroad as there used to be, though it is still viewed with some skepticism. However one merely needs to look at the rosters of CAP and Tani to see how more open minded Pasarga and her citizens have come to the foreign footballing world.

As for the tournament, the Young Wanderers look to be in a dead heat of a three horse race to win the group, as both Schottia and Ethane look to have highly capable rosters that can match or even exceed our own youth players. Möller's experience as a player could be the tipping point here, as he was part of a DBC team in his time and knows the same sort of pressure and thoughts going through the players' heads right now. With the number of eighteen year olds predicting to be in the starting line up, one might even suspect that there may be quite a bit of nerves and the manager's influence on those can not be understated. The first match against Boring Paradise should produce a bit of a buffer for the side and give Tobias a good sign of what he has to work with. That is if he can prepare this squad to perform as well as some might hope and give both the SuperLiga as well as the National Team a reason for hope.

MAKING SENSE OF CHANGES TO CENI'S YOUTH ROSTER
Will the new lineup Peter Petrossian has assembled retain their title - or flop?
For the first time ever, Ceni faces the pressure of defending a title - and Peter Petrossian's men and women are fully up to the challenge. Or so we'd like to think, anyhow, for there have been a lot of changes to this roster from the side that won the Di Bradini Cup two years ago. Some of those changes have come from the natural aging out of Ceni's players; others have come from a self-imposed guideline of not calling up any players that have received full senior team caps. It was a policy that was waived for DBC 38, when Ceni claimed its title, but the Cenian Football Federation decided to reinstate the rule for the 39th edition, under the reasoning that Ceni didn't need all the extra strength it could get. It then fell to Petrossian to make the requisite changes - and he has, but will it work out in the end? Or will the team meet its premature demise in this Di Bradini Cup and fail to defend its title? We're here at The Twelfth Man to try and parse through these questions.

This publication has reason to be confident - in practically all areas of the Cenian U-21 team, Ceni has some strong backup to fill the shoes of those team members (cough, cough, del Toro and Arrowsword) that might be pretty hard to fill ordinarily. Indeed, Petrossian has staffed his midfield and offense - areas where Ceni has traditionally been stronger - with a mix of youth and experience that should be able to deliver. And in the defense, an area where Ceni has traditionally been lacking, Ceni has a strong backbone of experienced defenders that should be able to hold back too much of an opposing threat. While the goalkeeping staff could still use some improvement, this columnist has reason to be optimistic, thanks to the variety of options available to back up a particularly inexperienced keeper should the starting goalkeeper ever fall to the pressure of a high-pressure situation. Additionally, Petrossian has worked some formation magic in order to put Ceni into a flexible 3-3-2-2 that could easily switch into a 3-2-3-2 should the need arise, and this formation has strength on the wings that last DBC's formation simply just lacks.

With those general points being said, let's dive deep into the individual areas of the field - the defense, the midfield, and the offense - and analyze those a little bit more deeply for their strengths and weaknesses. First is the defense, and for simplicity's sake, I include the goalkeepers here. To be brutally honest, the goalkeepers are where I have the most reservations about Ceni's whole defensive setup, and from the goalkeepers could come weakness that means that Ceni ends up losing the match. All three goalkeepers have some strengths and weaknesses - Khasek has the big-match experience but a lot of inconsistency that needs a lot of work; Kosokhan has the natural talent and the reflexes but lacks too much experience playing in bigger-pressure games; Najoqui was a good goalkeeper in the Cenileague, but that's just a second division, and again, he has a lot of inconsistency. I think that together, this goalkeeping setup could work, but it's not exactly enough to follow in the big footsteps of Juan Pablo Morales, as Morales seemed to be the complete package, while these individual goalkeepers lacks some part of the package.

The defense gives me more confidence, however, and perhaps, just perhaps, the defense could do all the big work without having to rely on the goalkeeper to make saves all too much. Solis Vela played for Viento Oeste, which placed an undue emphasis on the defense, sharpening his skills, while Miri Windtide plays for Myrmidon, perhaps the biggest and most successful Cenian club of all time, both domestically and internationally. The two of them, in addition to Astara Khan, have a wealth of experience in the defense, which will help them to prevent any mistakes that may end up occurring on the defensive end. They work well together as one unit; they pass, dribble, and clear well. If they coordinate as they have been during team practices, they should minimize the number of goals let in, with or without a good goalkeeper. Make no mistake, a good goalkeeper coordinates the defense so much better than a bad one, but in this case, the good defense will help to coordinate itself rather than relying too much on the goalkeeper.

Next, let's move on to the midfield. I think that there's a lot going on in the midfield - both offensively and defensively - and that Ceni is exactly where it should be in terms of midfield proficiency. Although Petrossian did not have the same surfeit of qualified players in the midfield that he did last go-round, there's still a strong pool of midfielders to choose from, including some experienced hands and some youth, adding a good mix of both to the team, which is quite necessary. Marc-André Onasi will surely lead the team along the wings, and maybe in the center, as his propensity for attack, and tall stature, allow him to be an effective winger; Sofia Falcón is a true box-to-box midfielder, with versatility that should help the team transition from an defensive to an offensive formation and back again. Allegro and d'Orazio, with their experience should help to provide some awesome backup, in case of injury and/or a change in circumstances that requires a more offensive or more defensive formation. These more experienced players, especially Falcón and Onasi, form the core of Ceni's midfield, directing the play from the forward to the back.

But Ceni's young midfielders will certainly be the energy driving the whole unit forward - and boy, do they have energy, as well as a whole lot of potential. Xavi Caldera and Asher Koromin were a stellar partnership during their time at Polaris - indeed, they helped their team to win a Youth Cup in the process. Caldera usually plays along the right wing and Koromin in the center, but that doesn't matter for the two as Koromin is actually quite flexible with his positioning on the field, and can go to the left wing to help complement Caldera on the other side. That flexibility and versatility is what makes Ceni's midfield such a great one - it changes and morphs from something defensive to something offensive, and vice versa, quite quickly. But more importantly, their raw talent will help this team penetrate defenses and score goals, which is of course the goal of football. On the left side, Nova Kymeri is another cog in the versatile machine; with a more defensive mindset, she helps the team move quickly into defense, and can actually transition into a defensive midfield. Caldera, Koromin, and Kymeri are all starters for this team, but some substitutes look exciting as well - think Gavin Therian and Gilead Val'Tor, the latter of whom also contributed to Polaris's Youth Cup victory. So Ceni has quite a lot of potential in the midfield, especially in the attacking midfield, which should help to drive the team forward.

Ceni's striking team will help to channel that energy from the midfield into actually scoring goals, and helping each other to create them. While Ceni only has two forwards for this tournament in its current lineup, both of them are high quality and work well with other members of the midfield and offense; Lorennion actually won the Golden Boot award in the I-League for his work at prodigiously scoring goals, while Cesár Corvalán recently earned a move to high-profile Starling, in the Nepharim league. Both strikers clearly have bright futures, and Petrossian has paired them with midfielders so that the two develop a close relationship - the relationship between Koromin and Lorennion, and Caldera and Corvalán, should prove important in the coming few days, as the team moves forward throughout the Di Bradini Cup. Lorennion and Corvalán are experienced, too, and they should be able to take the conduit provided to them by the midfield and actually translate that into goals moving forward.

So, Ceni's Di Bradini Cup team has a lot of potential in it. I think a couple of key takeaways are, in no particular order, its good mix of youth and experience (relative experience, anyhow), and the versatility of Ceni's midfield - these two things should allow Ceni to at least make a deep run through the Di Bradini Cup, if not take the title again. Alas, however, Ceni must not be too overconfident - after all, Ceni's opponents will not be unprepared, either. Thus, whatever happens, it will take a lot of hard work to get Ceni into the championship game again. But we hope, and we remain hopeful that Ceni can repeat its accomplishment of last cycle.

This is continuing with the world cup rp for this nation. I ran out of time for the election in the WC, and so I will be looking back on it in these rp's. Note that this will take place during the WC, but I'm getting a head start to try to get everything I need for the storyline this WC, so this technically isn't happening during this tournament, so please don't rp it as such.

12th July 2018. 3PM.

The sun was floating high in the sky, as is typical for the time of year in Ethane. A market, which was set up on the square outside the party offices in New Sarum - an event which ran without fail every day - was bustling with life, a wide range of products on sale such as fresh fruit, which was grown just down the road on one of the local farms. They were a regular staple of the leader of MoralEthane!, and something Mr.Holmes would buy every mid-afternoon, some of which was a snack for him during the final hours of his working day in the capital of Ethane as leader of his party, and the rest of which he took home for his family to enjoy, who for the most part, bar 1 extremely fussy child, loved the fresh fruit which he brought home with him every day.

It seemed like an ordinary afternoon with nothing amiss when he stepped out into the humid outdoors, which felt stuffy and uncomfortable to him in contrast to the refreshing air conditioned party offices. He strolled over to the local farmers stall, as he did regularly. He had become good friends with the local farmer, who was always the one selling the fruit, over the years which he had completed this routine daily, and often Mr. Holmes would spend a good 20 minutes chatting to the farmer, consuming most of his 30 minute break time in the process. He didn't mind using his break to talk to the local farmer, because he seemed like a friendly guy. He had even invited him down to his home once for dinner, but the farmer had denied as he had to pack up all his goods and return them home, which would take a significant amount of time, meaning he would miss the dinner time of the Holmes family. They normally talked about politics and sports, but quite often, Mr Holmes would use the farmer as a confidante to share personal and private information, some of which he should not be sharing with the common person, which the farmer did technically count as.

Unbeknownst to Mr. Holmes, he was not, however, the only one that was aware of his own daily routine, other than the people you would normally tell or who would normally figure out. For the past few years, ever since the election, despite the supposedly high security and decent intelligence service monitoring in the area, his routine and the timings of his routine - 3PM every day on the dot he would emerge from those doors - were being monitored by some of the extremist activists from the opposition party.

Mr. Holmes unfortunately, wasn't able to stay very long to talk to the farmer on this very day. He had work piling up on his desk from the current affairs, and felt under pressure to deal with them all, with threats of challenges to his leadership brewing under the skin of the party from people who disagreed with his rather cooperative and pacifistic way of dealing with the opposition parties. Some of the challengers felt that the only way to keep power was to beat their opposition to the ground, and wanted to change the party machinery more towards intimidation and ruling by tyranny rather than the more democratic approach of Mr. Holmes. Because of Mr. Holmes approach to politics, he was an enemy of a significant number of people - out of his party and in - and having the amount of enemies he has in the politics world is never a good thing to say the least. Some of the party members below him had tried to intimidate him and threaten his family, to force him to resign from his job, but he refused to back down, instead just hiring extra security to protect himself and his family from enemies.

12th July 2018. 6PM

Sarah Pilcock pulled up outside the farm in the stolen car, with three other passengers - Alex, Damon and Jenny - in the car with her. They had been planning this for months, the only way to get what they needed and to destroy MoralEthane!.

'Are you sure this is the right farm?' Jenny asked from the back, a serious look plastered on her face. This was her first serious undercover mission in charge for the party, and she wanted to make sure everything ran smoothly and with no mistakes. She received a murmuring of yes's and nods from the two sat in the front of the car. This was the worst part of the missions they had to do, and this one was one of the worst she missions she had ever been on in regards to this bit, but the mission was crucial to the success of the GreenerEthane! underground movement, undermining the government's rule and raising support amongst the common people of the country.

'Guns out. Lets go. Stealthy and quiet everyone.' Jenny barked out her orders quietly, ensuring as to not alert the occupants of their house to them being there. They ran in the door, keeping their heads low. The voices were coming from the living room, which was at the end of the corridor, so they had to stealthily cross the corridor, being careful as to ensure there was no one in the other rooms. They crept across, disturbing nothing and no one. As they reached the room at the end of the corridor, the peeked in, seeing a father and mother and two kids playing. This was the worst part of the missions, as Jenny had proclaimed earlier, because it was such a shame to have to deal with such adorable and innocent families who unknowingly got caught up in politics. Jenny signalled with her hands. Three. Two. One. Then all four of them charged into the room, guns pointing at the family.

'Hands in the air!' Jenny commanded the four of them. She was pained to have to do this to a six year old kid, but it was necessary for the success of the mission and the success of the movement. They needed to find out more about what MoralEthane! were up to, and this man seemed to have insider knowledge, based on his position as a close, unofficial, confidante of Mr. Holmes.

'Mr. Aberson. You're with me. The rest of you are free, but IF YOU SAY A WORD....' she trailed off, before holding her finger to her neck and slicing it across her throat in a motion to suggest she would cut off their heads, or at least slit their throats, or worse. She grabbed Mr. Aberson by the arm and dragged him out of the house to the car, where she shoved him in the boot, with a black mask over his face. They all then jumped in the car and removed their masks, cheering and clapping at their successful endeavour. Damon leant over and kissed Sarah on the cheek, glad of their success, before they sped off down the road to return to their base, where they would report back, having completed the mission successfully, 1 step towards saving Ethane from the tyranny of MoralEthane!

Nephara Defeat is a Major Setback for Youths

By: Killian Riemar

'Back then, we drew against them. Now, they got their revenge.' That is how Ethan Kreis describes the 1-0 defeat against Nephara, after an amazing volley by striker Estrella Hawk. The Vocaloid Army are expecting to win their first match. However, the team is quite better than usual. The multiple saves by Gehard Harmuth (who replaced starter Anthoulis Matraxis in the 85th minute) and the quality of the defence made it hard for the attacking side to come through and make a shot. Zhou Fuyuan does however saved a lot of shots in this match but Hawk managed to break through him and score the goal, giving Nephara 3 points. The strikers also worked hard to score the goal but the defence proved it too easy.

'Our efforts matter to us.' told Landon Barclay. 'Nephara has a strong lineup than their last edition squad. They are not to messed around with. If you think we're playing badly, don't be suprised if we didn't!'

BREAKING NEWS: Lina Amos New Manager of “La Selecta”

“In this post, you can follow the live feed of what was the press conference held at the Guayabalense Football Federation, the most important conversations, phrases, and relevant statements made by the new manager of “La Selecta”, the Chromatik manager Lina Amos, in a moment that will be remembered by the fact of having the first female manager of “La Selecta” and being an inflexion point by the fact that minor aged teams might adapt their philosophy of game to what Mrs. Amos decided to implement with La Selecta at the Senior National Team.”

From: San Salvador - National Teams -Breaking News.

Welcome to the live feed of the new manager of La Selecta’s decision, this live feed is being broadcasted from the Headquarters of the Guayabalense Football Federation, located in San Salvador. The opinions submitted by each person are there exclusive responsibility, we only share what they say to press, important information will be highlighted in blue when it’s released, thank you for being with us at this live feed, we hope you enjoy the broadcasting and also we thank you for being here and preferring Elemental Collapse as your preferred sports source of information.

“Hello and welcome to the press conference we have been preparing since a couple of days ago, in this occasion, we will present the new manager of La Selecta, we won’t give their name until they appear through this next door, but what we can anticipate for you all is that we made the best choice, we received six resumes and we are sure we elected the person who fulfilled the biggest amount of characteristics with what we currently have, the thing we need is to prioritise the formation of one sole game philosophy and we are sure that the new manager will know what to do with that, we are confident of what we elected and also the fans who were in the deliberation process giving their points of view and ideas to take in mind for the election, we thank you all for the cooperation given through the process, now, let’s get started” Said Javier Márquez, the president of the Guayabalense Football Federation.
“Right now, I’ll proceed to give you all the agenda for today:

• Technical aspects taken in consideration to elect the manager.
• New philosophy to take in count for the National Teams.
• Characteristics of the new manager.
• Terms of contract that might be relevant to the people in general.
• Presentation of manager.
• The manager giving their thoughts
• Questions and Answers period.” Said the master of ceremony.

*The protocol agenda begins, right now the legal representative of the Guayabalense Football Federation might appear in order to detail us the terms of contract, despite that’s the fourth point in agenda. Javier Márquez is taking the microphone now in order to detail the technical aspects that were taken in consideration while electing the new manager*

“Well, there were a lot of aspects we took in consideration during the election process, most of them were used in order to do a proper research of each profile, a deeper research since we thought that it wasn’t enough to keep our minds on what they told us in their résumés, it was needed more and we did through a lot of research, thank God we have internet *Laughs* because this would have been a nightmare if we wouldn’t have any internet connection, the thing is, that we are sure on what we have done for this. Other aspects we took in consideration were: Performance in domestic tournaments (If they had), performance with other national teams, accolades they did while managing, focus on personality of the manager, and labour stability on their past works. We deemed this aspects important since we have been characterised by being stable with work times, if not, figure out that our last manager lasted for fourteen years, we hope we can have our new manager for a period like that, a renovation of contract will be amazing for us, though we wouldn’t know their plans, so I’ll stop talking in an anticipated way. Also, the game philosophy was something that we considered too, we discarded some managers earlier because they weren’t compatible with the style that characterises the national team, while the other managers have a similar game philosophy, so, we can do the changes needed with cooperation of them and the managers from the lesser age national teams, that’s why we deemed as something important those aspects.” Said Márquez.

*Continuing with the second point, we might emphasise in certain words that the president of the Federation said, specifically in those related to “contract stability” and “desires to renovate contract”, though, I really think that he committed a mistake by talking of renovations when the manager has just been hired, that’s why I’m glad that they weren’t here when Márquez committed the mistake. Right now, the representative of the lesser age National Teams, Oscar Agramonte will talk for us, from Mar Sara, Valanora, since he is managing the U-21 team in the Di Bradini Cup.*

“Well, considering several factors as the president of the Federation said, the conversations to set a new game philosophy won’t be as difficult as I expected those to be in a very beginning, to be honest, since the manager chosen is already has a notion of what we have been using for a long time, the thing is, we need to focus on make the system better, to spread it across the nation, so the children can be forged under a same model and don’t suffer problems to be adapted on the different National Team processes, that’s why, having the change will be needed in order to familiarise more and more players and forge a National Team that might excel in a future in terms of cohesion, discipline and creativity, since the players might develop new ideas to incorporate to the plan, so we can keep enriching the idea and updating it, in order to continue into compatibility and reach our maximum goal, winning the World Cup, the dream we need to achieve sooner than later.” Said Agramonte.

*Agramonte focused basically on the creation of one same style for every National Team, something that he will work with the new manager. I consider his words as accurate, since having those plans and ideas won’t hurt, it’ll be a new bet to improve the National Team and being more competitive in an upcoming future, especially in youth football, which has been our reproved subject for a lot of time… Now, the characteristics of the new manager will be given by Marcos Ledesma, the Federation member who was in charge of reading all the profiles received.*

“Have a good morning, everyone, on what we basically focused while electing the new manager was the compatibility with the system we are currently practising, having similar aspects or a bit different to ours, so we can adapt to them easily. From all the managers, at least three had a similar model and all of them have had success on their duties, coming from a manager that reached two podiums on World Cup some years ago, to a successful domestic team manager and a manager that has done a lot with her national team in so few time, leading them to finish fourth in a World Cup, but who had the best characteristics focuses mostly on being adaptable to the individual needs of each player, somebody that focuses to make stronger the already strong skills of the player and also making sure to make stronger the player weakness. Having such work system is important for us, since every player has different needs that we should take in consideration and try to satisfy those in order to have a better National Team. Other important detail was the preferences of each manager, we considered those who tend to make players emphasise on passing, precision while crossing and attacking in a straightforward way.” Said Ledesma.

*Maybe the wisest comment made until now, focusing on compatibility and giving continuity to a system that has proven to be effective with us for almost fifteen years, keeping that system will be important to develop new talents… Now, the representative of the Football Federation, Josue Rodríguez will talk about contract issues.*

“In regards of contract, we are glad to announce that we reached a good agreement for both parts, a six year deal, enough to guaranty the process for three entire World Cup cycles and two Campionato Esportiva, economical details won’t be disclosed due to petition of the Federation. One, If not, the most important term is that the Football Federation decided to invest the money require in initiatives made by the new manager, that would lead to upgrade the current system of youth football in San José Guayabal.” Briefly said Rodríguez.

*And now the presentation moment has arrived, we see how the new manager sits on her designated sit, the monitor near her seat displays his names, the master of ceremony presents her, its Lina Amos, who was the manager of Chromatika. To be honest, a good decision, if you don’t believe it, remember who we faced in the 3PPO of the latest World Cup.*

Márquez took the microphone and presented the new manager: “She is our new manager, Lina Amos, coming from Chromatika.”

*Amos will talk right now to media.*

“Good moning, sorry if I speak in English right now, but I’ll make sure to learn Spanish soon, I like languages *laughs*, well, returning to what matters, I need to say that I feel honoured of being elected as manager of the Guayabalense National Team, it’ll be an important challenge for my career but I know that I’ll be capable to face it and focus to take this team to its best shape possible. In regards of my experience, I can say that I have managed Urrhediao, which is now one of the best Chromatik sided we have on the league and also managing the Chromatik National Team since World Cup 75, in said World Cup, I took the team to reach Round of 16 in their first participation, then in World Cup 76, the team reached semi-finals and we finished fourth place since San José Guayabal beat us *ironic laugh*, Well… Who would have said that I’d have ended up here *laughs again* and also finishing second in the last AOCAF. Now that I landed here, I’ll give my personal best in order to make “La Selecta” reach the World Cup the so-called “World Cup dream”, I know it will be difficult but not impossible, since we have some of the best players in the National Team, especially Rodolfo Zelaya and Sean Fraser, fast players that will adapt to my system with ease, well, overall speaking, I’m sure that all the team won’t have any problem to adapt to my game philosophy since they already practise something really similar, though I’ll make sure to make it better than before.” Said Amos

*Learning Spanish will be for sure good for her in order to develop her work here, nice to hear that she will do it. Apart from it, it has been a convincing speech, at least, for me, knowing that her intentions are good, especially on what we said on reaching the World Cup dream, which I hope we will do someday… Now, the questions and answers time.*

“My name is Julián de la Cerna, I’m journalist of El Nacional. Let me ask you this: Do you have a particular opinion of Guayabalense football? A basic approach or a good one as for now?
“For now, I can say that it’s a good one, I have investigated about the style practised here since I got the notification call from the Federation, from what I know, I can say that it’s a style with a very vertical approach, being effective on counterattacks, but something that it should be fixed is the lack of precision while defining in front of goal, the team has wasted lots of chances that could have been important, especially in the World Cup final… It’s something that we need to fix immediately, also practicing some penalty kicks will be needed.” Said Amos in a pretty straightforward answer.

“Hello Lina, my name is Marta de Cruz from El Roblar Sports. I’m curious on what you think about the players we have, are they enough for your plans or do you consider doing some sort of generational exchange?”
“Well, I haven’t see the ages of the players, if a generational exchange is needed, I’ll do it, but I’ll start introducing youth slowly since this needs to be a progressive thing. Regarding players, as I said, we have some of the best in the Multiverse as for now such as Rodolfo Zelaya, Sean Fraser, Jonathan Faña, Leonidas Bregoo and others, especially Terrazas, a goalkeeper that can strive to be the best of this time, if we work on him more, I’m sure that he will do it… This players are fast and they will suit well for my gaming intentions.”

“Good morning, my name is Marcelo Avalos, from Radio “La Poderosa YSGU”, I want to know if you think that you’re capable lead this team for a World Cup win?”
“Interesting question, I’m capable, but I don’t promise such thing, we need to work hard and strive for it, practise will be the key to achieve this. I don’t promise but I’ll make sure to demonstrate our potential in the field, where it really matters.”

The press conference has finished, thank you for watching the live feed of Elemental Collapse.

Admiral Storevik is the oldest, biggest and most successful club in Ejana, the smallest of Savojarna's three main islands. However, since its eastablishment the less successful ESK Storevik was more popular. Football struggles in Ejana, where the people prefer handball and hockey, and to a lesser extent rugby, but nevertheless there are some notable players coming from the icy rock in the Northwest of the nation. The team was established in 1916 as a way of entertaining sailors stationed in the big Storevik naval base. It participated in the big 1916 Army Cup, where it lost games against CASK and Spartak, but could beat their navy rivals from the Pawlograd base. This is the only army team that spent most of its time on par with the other team of its branch (Torpedo Pawlograd), rather than seeing one as inferior. Therefore, they are somewhat less sucessful as CASK or Dynamo Sjoedrhavn, as they didn't have the double-pool of talent these teams enjoyed. Only in its early history under the management of Navy Captain Mikael Pettersson, who entertained a fierce rivalry with the army officer Stefan Rydberg, did Admiral move players from other naval bases to Storevik in order to form a team that would beat the CASK side. In the earliest days, Admiral was very strong and won the inaugurational league in 1922/23 as well as the 1927 season. Then, Pettersson's rivalry started. Throughout the 1930s, games between Admiral and CASK were some of the biggest events in Savojarna overall. They were always sold out and live covered on the radio. Admiral would usually win the duels of the two teams, but tended to lose leagues, only winning in 1930 and 1933. However, they lifted the cup five times in those years and became the first team to defend the Cup title in 1932.

The 1935 cup final is often seen as a tragic point in Admiral's history. Having lost the League only days before the final against CASK, Admiral still went into the match as a favourite, given that to this point, nobody had ever won a Double; Admiral won most games against CASK in the 30s but tended to blow the league against smaller teams and Admiral was seen as a specialist for the Cup, whereas CASK only had one cup trophy in their palmares. Led by the legendary keeper Sven Lund, Admiral had a team that many fans thought to be the strongest Storevik side ever fielded. Seventeen minutes into the match, Paul Johanson dribbled past the CASK defense and scored with a low shot to the left corner. Lund had been able to fend off most of the attacks of CASK's attack centred around Bengt Saevarsson, arguably the best striker of the country, despite the physical game of the Thorsborger. Shortly before the break, CASK defender Anton Mikaelsson was sent off after a late tackle against Admiral's Harald Rönne, who could continue the game only with a taped ankle. But after the break, the pressure on Lund's goal intensified and after 52 minutes, he conceded a corner that would change the game. Saevarsson jumped to the ball wildly and hit Lund, who had pushed the cross away. Lund lost his balance and injured his left knee on the landing, as well as claiming to have been dizzy and sporting a bloody nose as Saevarsson's shoulder caught him in the face. The referee did not blow the whistle as Järman pushed the ball into the empty net to equalise, and sent off Admiral's Haakon Jansrud for getting into a heated altercation with Saevarsson. Following the incident, CASK's star took advantage of the injured Lund and scored two more goals, and Petter Naslund set the score to 4-1 eventually. Five minutes before the end, there was a third player sent off in CASK's Rolf Gustavsson, and Bjarnason could score the 4-2 by a penalty shot, but it was too late to prevent a CASK double. After that game, Admiral still won two cups but couldn't win a Championship for over a decade.

Troughout the 1940s, Admiral was struggling but never got into serious trouble. By this time, the state backed teams still mostly dominated and barely any non-state teams were ever able to break their dominance. However, Admiral was usually not among the best as CASK formed its dynasty thanks to the talent pool it saw with the institution of ASK Landsmark, and due to the shift of power in the Navy ranks that made it harder to get players from Pawlograd. As relations between Russica and Nordic Savojarna changed, the former's teams received more support and in the late 1940s, FK Torpedo took the role as the number one Navy club. Nevertheless, Admiral rarely openly had to give out players as the two teams were largely separated by then, with Torpedo mainly running on Russian and Sumanish players, while Ejana and Vestrholmen were Admiral's territory. By the end of the 40s, Admiral could not compete with Pawlograd or CASK but was forming a new team based on the talented twins Henrik and Niklas Jotansson. The two Jotansson twins dominated the Admiral midfield, but were not enough to bring home the fifth title until they were supported with a strong goaltender in Rikard Eriksson. This trio finally managed to bring home another title in 1956, after having snatched the 1953 cup title already. In 1958, they finally won the club's first Double. However, CASK and the Dynamos proved hard opponents, and after the ninth cup title in 1961 (and a second place in the League) the Jotanssons retired. Eriksson left the team a year later, and the team had to be rebuilt again. This took its time, and they struggled with attendance throughout most of the time as Dynamo, Aviator and Partisan mostly divided titles among them.

Nobody expected much of Admiral, who suffered more and more from its remote location, by the mid-70s. In consequence, it was a total surprise when the 1974 season ended and the team stood on top, celebrating its seventh championship. This success gave a great boost to Storevik's football ambitions, and Admiral suddenly became an address for talent again. In this time, the team was known for a hard, defensive game symbolised by centre-back Linus Rejslan, a tall and strong man who was known for physical playing. Most of their games ended 1-0 or 0-0, and it was considered great success to score more than once against Rejslan's defense or the goalkeeper, Nils Loeseth. Loeseth, at the time only 21 years old, would be the face of the club for a long time. He was iconic and considered Savojarna's sexiest player in the late 70s and early 80s, when a star cult built around him. This cult was all but hurt by his reputation as a penalty killer, saving a total of four attempts in the two shootouts that Admiral faced in the run to the 1977 cup final. In the final, he saved a penalty shot again in overtime, allowing Admiral to win 2-1 in OT against RLSK Pawlograd and become the first team to win ten cups. While the management built a team around him, others struggled from the new laws of the 80s and enabled Admiral to rise again. With the popular and talented Loeseth in goal and the elegant, young midfielder Grigori Muravyev, Admiral got its first back-to-back titles in club history in 1980 and 1981. Following the euphoria triggered by this success, the city decided to build a new stadium in 1983, back then one of the biggest of the league with 78'000 people, many of them placed on steep stands. The "Ejana Cauldron", as it was nicknamed, was feared by many teams, and its athmosphere helped pushing Admiral to back-to-back cup finals in the seasons past its inauguration, even though they lost both. 1985, they could their tenth championship finally winning a star on their jerseys. After the 11th cup title in 1990, Loeseth, aged 37, followed the Storevik tradition of players retreating with a cup in their hands.

As it was usually the case with Admiral when other teams dominated, they took their attention to the cup again. During the reign of Dynamo Sjoedrhavn's 1990s dynasty, occasionally broken only by the Army, the Admirals took advantage of Dynamo's traditional cup weakness. They eliminated Sjoedrhavn three times in the quarterfinals throughout the 90s, winning the cup two more times in 1994 and 1997. The team in those times lacked an identity and was seen as a lacklustre group of players hunting the old day's glory without a concept or a common spirit. The cup titles were more perceived as lucky strikes by fans, and came in somewhat questionable manners. The 1994 title was seen as one of the easiest won ever, as Admiral profited from a few upsets and only faced three first-tier teams in the whole competition, one of which was relegated at the end of the season. In 1997, they profited from a failure of Partisan's coach Jacobsen, when he accidentally substituted a suspended player in the quarterfinal and Partisan had to quit despite a 3-1 victory. In the final, a FK Metall equaliser was wrongly disallowed due to an off-side that actually wasn't one, and Admiral could lift the cup for a 13th time. In the SFS, it was harder to profit from such events and there were no titles for the team until the new century. Then, management finally committed to a new coach in Thomas Järbyn, who then formed a young, dynamic team that played with a lot of speed. This new concept seemed to work, and paid off in 2005 when Admiral won the title again after a 20 year draught. The team stayed strong and added another one in 2008, when the Storevik squad managed the club's second Double. After their thirteenth title in 2010, the core of Järbyn's team had grown old and while the gaps could have been filled earlier, it was no longer possible.

Over the last few years, Admiral has slid down into meaninglessness again, as it had been the case in the 1960s and in the league of the 90s. However, Admiral had often been strongest when returning from such times. The recent appointment of native Bjarne Eythorsson has been controversial. While many had appreciated the attempt to build on an Ejanan identity, many fans had wished for a more experienced coach. But either way, Admiral should never be forgotten, especially not when there is a cup to win. The team can beat anyone, and while a renovation in the 1990s to meet new security standards did reduce the number of people present in the stadium greatly, Ejanans remain a passionate people that wants to see their heroes succeed. Admiral Storevik draws a lot on its glory rather than recent success at the moment, but it will remain a great name in the North and aims to recreate the golden days of the 30s and the early 80s with a young, popular and defensively solid squad reminding of the one around 1980.

Crimson LaRusso was an interesting woman.
Having made some really weird choices as of late, her football was first seen at the Sunrise All-Stars event, even if by coincidence as she helped Team X-Treme beat the Nekojin squad at the first round.
The words seemed to always ring in her ears for days, specifically whenever anyone doubted her.
She was a foreigner at that world, the world of football.
For her, the roughest part was that she was a Sunrisian.
Unified Sunrise, for all its' weirdness, was always respected by its' large youth football system.
Every year, they could send a fair list of people to the rest of the world. Nothing hard on that.
In fact, the country was one of the few places that could tell they ever had a League War.
And the most unique part of it? That League War was based on youth leagues.
That deep pool of players was the nation's pride, in a way.
Meanwhile, there she was.
No experience for either of the four leagues.
Hell, she didn't even get to play for a Sunrisian team.
Still, there was one thing Crimson could do to make sure the fans would like (and more important, trust) her: play each game like a final.

The Sunrisians took the game against Dylecte on stride.
The group had fellow Esportivan powerhouse San José Guayabal and Savojarna, both being clearly tough opposition.
However, Bourbon still wanted her team to get used to the changes, so she sent her proper squad to that game.
Anda at the back, Romanov and Chapéuzinho Vermelho holding the way to the box, Claudinei and Bitoca playing through the wings.
LeLeverdusoleilian kept back and front connected, Momi Campo moved up a bit from the past, Swift Curse acted to help cover any Momi Campo mistakes, Nego do Jordel hooking it up on the right front side, Phillippe Dhybron acting as the guy that passes to Lassie Alcouin, the nation's favorite little striker.
While some would say Dhybron was clearly being underutilized with this, the Sunrisian team seemed well at paper and the Matthewsianian integration seemed to have been fully done.
Bourbon noted to the team not to injure themselves, the other two games would be more important and she wanted her full eleven well for those.
Swift Curse spit her gum, annoyed. She had to over-perform.

LeLeverdusoleilian had the ball, two opposing defenders were on his track.
Crimson waved, followed by a defender as well, while Momi Campo was on the clear.
He did the expected, passing the ball to Campo.
The Sunrisian number 9 yelled "Balls to that!", rushed through and reached the ball.
She knew it, this would be a perfect chance to start the Di Bradini Cup, beat minnows with a fantastic shot.
A slide.
The defender went right after Crimson's right knee.
It was brutal.
Thankfully for the surprise rookie, Crimson's leg wasn't broken. The shades of Rolandinho Juliano wouldn't be invoked.
Still, Bourbon saw it fit to sub her out.
Crimson faltered her way out of the field, clearly unhappy about the substitution.
She clearly thought it was up to her to do the job.
She had to do the job.
It was her own live sake there.
Another of the surprise picks of Bourbon filled her spot in.
Seventeen year older Juliet Vrbada stared at the field of the Donna Cathedral, her eyes wide, the smoke around her almost non-existent.
She wasn't overwhelmed, it's just she didn't expect to be there.
Crimson sat at the grass, staring at the field, angry.
Juliet ran to the free kick spot. Lassie would normally kick it, but the team made it clear they wanted the Enenra girl to try it out.
She took a deep breath before running to the ball.
The ball made a curve, overtaking the wall made by the keeper.
The keeper tried to punch the ball out, but instead, the object swerved into the bar, hitting the net afterwards.
Juliet Vrbada's first international goal no less.
Crimson punched the ground. "It was meant to be me!" she yelled.

The South Edenian smiled, lifted by Claudinei and Bitoca as they celebrated the goal.

It wasn't like she hated Silian Parker. Or the U21 team. It was more like a testament to just how numb she was.

There was talk of the previous Pùr manager being the new manager of the Chromatik National Team. He had led Pùr from the depths in Season 4 to winning Season 5, and was one of the hottest names in the managerial circuit. He also had a law degree, and knew how to handle himself in public. She had met with him a few times, and he had proven to be a thoughtful individual, one that could carry himself in public.

It was just that some wounds were still too raw.

As for her stint in the U21 squad? It would be her last, the next time this tournament rolled around she'd be a ripe age of 22 and not be allowed to participate. That being said, she wanted to carry this team to further than the Round of Sixteen.

The game against Kirisaki wasn't a nice start to that, though. Although Mia did her damnedest to guard the goal, the defense was a bit too porous. Lightning did score the first goal by a person who was considered illegitimate in the history of Chromatika, and Kéìrâ herself had tied up the game, but with heavy-hitters Nephara next, things were not looking the greatest.

She knew that this was the worst time to be too caught up on things that were out of her control. Amos had made her choice, and now that she had some time to think through the decision, it actually made sense.

It was up to her to grow up and deal with the cards as they fell.

Little Devils: Following the young Red Demons in their World Cup
Part One

Article by Liv Neri, former soldier and fan of all things Markham

Things hadn’t been that great for the Redvali national team. The players didn’t gel, the tactics didn’t work out very well(turns out sending long ball after long ball downfield isn’t a great way to score), and the opposition looked like they were head and shoulders above the quality of the Redvali team in most matches. Our country couldn’t do as well in association football as we’ve done in gridiron football recently. That was in the AOCAF, the toughest of the three big regional contests. After the poor showing against giants like Audioslavia, fans of the newly formed Redvali national teams were left wondering if their new teams had a winning future in front of them at all.

And it would be a valid question, after the shellacking that Redvale took to Audioslavia, and the other bad losses in the rest of the group stage. Because of those losses, and because of that poor athletic and tactical performance, there would be more pressure than ever on the U-21 team to try to perform better than their senior counterparts. The youth, everyone said, would lead the country into success. Because obviously, the older players wouldn’t. Those big expectations were why Fabien Endrizzi took the U-21 national team job instead of jumping from the youth level to the senior level after his success with the Midland Bluesox. Somehow, the feeling around this squad isn’t that they’re a normal U-21 team. The expectations don’t match up to what a normal youth team would face, at least.

My name is Liv Neri, and I was lucky enough to receive the job of following the team around and witnessing those expectations, and how they cope with them, firsthand. I’m one of the few press members to receive all access, which the Football Federation of Redvale granted because they want someone to be able to hype up the team for them after watching it up close. I traveled with them to Valanora and I’m staying in the same hotel as the team and following the players throughout their day. I’d like to think I’m the best one to cover the mood in the locker room and on the pitch, and the best one to cover them from all angles. It’s after the first game that I’m writing this, and I can already see that there’s something different about this squad.

And, for the first time, you’re going to get to see their story up close.

=====

We arrived in Valanora about three days before the match against Cetheque. The first day wasn’t spent training or even warming up for the practice that would happen the day after, but it was spent with players picking their roommates and getting to know each other. Some of them already knew each other from club football, but many of them didn’t, and everyone was curious to see what their new teammates would be like. We have a lot of recognizable names on this team, from Skal Phillips to Annamarie Janzen-Hara to Lindsey Calderon, and also a lot of players that have become stars at the club level already. Hiroyo Nunez is shockingly only twenty years old, and thus she was included in the squad. There’s also Aferic Esumi, who is playing in the top division with FC Castle at twenty years old. And I think everyone knows Park Sang Chul, the star center fielder who led Midland to the youth league title.

Everyone wanted to know how these big name players would mesh, but I think things went better than they did with the senior national team. Hiroyo Nunez and AJ Hara knocked heads early on, because both of them have alpha personalities and don’t do well around others who are like them, but most of the players put aside club rivalries and focused on the goal. There were many friendships that quickly formed, too.

The players who either played for Black Knights Primavera or had previously played for that club stuck together, so AJ Hara and Mark Fajardo and Nicolai Carrera de Maris were practically inseparable for all three days before the match. Bryn Knight and Wolf Dreschler, who both play in Avgaria, stuck together too. While friendships formed, there were a few outsiders too. Yoshiro Sozuka, the free scoring Glenham Aggies striker, kept to himself the entire time.

While everything was amicable on the first day, and most of the players focused on making friends and looked forward to the first match, things heated up on the second day. There’s a lot of competitors on this squad, and that showed in practice. Fabien Endrizzi has a habit of fining players for doing things wrong, moreso than many other managers, and let’s just say that hundreds or maybe thousands of drachmas were lost during that first practice. There was fierce competition between the projected starters and their backups, which resulted in some players losing their cool.

Maura Rush, for example, started as goalkeeper for the second stringers, and after making an impressive one handed save by the corner of the net, she shouted at Mark Fajardo from across the pitch and caused his club teammate, Nicolai Carrera de Maris, to shove her and start a pushing match between the first and second teams. Felix Bando ended up throwing the first punch when he went after Carrera de Maris from across the pitch, and he was promptly tackled by Rush’s club teammate, Marsha Peppers. She would’ve punched his face in after that if it wasn’t for getting held back by the bigger and stronger Will Castillo. Fabien ended up fining the players involved and throwing Bando and Rush out of practice for initiating the brawl, but that didn’t help much. This team is extremely competitive, maybe too much so, and they showed it again a half an hour later.

Cora Blazen was pissed about not being a starter, despite being one of the biggest stars in the RW League, and she took her frustration out on the player that took her spot, Park Sang Chul. She flipped him into the air with a very rough tackle that would have been a red card in an actual match. That caused Park’s strike partner, Hiroyo Nunez, to start swinging, and the far taller and far stronger striker was set to beat the shit out of Blazen if AJ Hara and Lindsey Calderon hadn’t held her back. Even though she eventually got pulled away, Hiroyo still had enough time to tag Cora’s cheek, opening a bloody cut that looked worse than it really was. Even though she was the one to initiate the fight by making an obviously dangerous tackle, Cora got off with just a fine and Hiroyo got thrown out of practice.

Everything went fine after that, but it left a bad taste in everyone’s mouths. It also established some clear lines in this squad. You were either a starter or a backup, and many of the backups believed that they were good enough to be starting. Fabien Endrizzi hasn’t really managed a squad with as many egos as this one(his Sporting teams were famous for winning through depth and not star power), so it’s going to be interesting to see how he deals with the infighting and reassures the bench players that they’re still valued and that their time will come eventually. Nobody wants to take time off from their club season to fly out to another country and then sit on the bench, after all.

On the third day before the match, there was no practice. Endrizzi’s teams never practice on the day before a match, and the Demons proved to be no exception to the trend. Most of the players hung around the hotel all day, with a few of them going out to see the sights of Raynor City. The players from urban areas liked checking everything out in Valanora, while the players from rural or suburban areas thought that the country was ridiculous for not allowing cars, and stayed home. Although, the Avgarian and Janfordian players were confused about why there were so many trees in the middle of the city; in Redvale, the line between urban areas and nature is typically more pronounced.

After the day of rest came gameday. And that was when the stars of this new team would finally shine.

=====

“Use possession smartly. Don’t focus on getting huge possession numbers, but make sure that when you do have the ball, you do something worthwhile with it. We’re not playing to look pretty, we’re playing to win. Whenever you have the ball, figure out where the weak spot in the defense is and establish the point of attack. I don’t want to see backwards passing and slow passes between the midfield, I want to see action. Unlike what some of you may have heard, it’s not about keeping the ball. It’s about waiting to get it and then making the most of your chances when you have it.”

That was part of the final speech that Fabien Endrizzi gave to his team, just before they went out to face Cetheque. While most of the preparation was done by Marcelo Endrizzi, Fabien felt the need to talk to the players personally about tactics just before the match to press the main points of his system. He said that the system would be the key that decided if they won or lost, and that sticking to it was the most important thing they could do. With so many different skillsets and play styles from the squad, the only thing that kept it all from being chaos was a solid tactical system.

It’s safe to say the team took his speech to heart. They got out to a flying start after ten minutes, because of none other than Park Sang Chul. The forward may be young, but he showed that he can play with anyone when he started in a deep position to win the ball in the midfield, played a perfect pass to Hiroyo Nunez, who then held the ball up at the offside line before laying a pass into the open field for him to chase. Park caught up with the ball before the defense or the keeper could, and lightly tapped it to give it just enough of a push to go forward and into the net. He celebrated his goal with the Handon striker by salsa dancing with her, and that set the tone for the rest of the match. The Demons would dance their way through a poor defense, putting on an absolutely clinical performance.

Hiroyo would get the second goal just under ten minutes later, when there was a corner kick chance and she used her height to head Simeon Norwood’s cross into goal. Because of her freakish height and her light frame, there wasn’t much the defense could do to prevent her from jumping over their backs to reach the ball, and once she made contact with the ball, it spun well enough to curve into goal past the keeper. Cetheque had a mountain to climb to get back into the match, but they wouldn’t. The Demons played too efficiently for that.

They actually didn’t have the ball for most of the first half, but they used it very well when they did have it. The third goal came in the thirty third minute, and it was scored by none other than AJ Hara, who had the flashiest shot of her career go into the back of the net. She had just switched from left wingback with Simeon Norwood, returning to her usual spot in the midfield, but her position switching caused problems for the defense. Her marker, who had been assigned to mark her when she was at left back and not at center midfielder, didn’t know what to do when she received the ball from Skal Phillips and aggressively took the first two steps forward towards him. He ended up backpedaling too far, giving her room to wind up for a shot from twenty seven yards out that the keeper had no chance of saving.

If the first half was bad for Cetheque, the second half was a bloodbath. The Demons grabbed goal number four just after coming out of the locker room, and AJ Hara struck again. This time, she swapped positions with Park and found herself with a slower defender marking her as she moved up front. After calling for the pass from Phillips again, she cut through the middle of the defense and slotted a low shot into goal. At this point in the match, most managers would have eased up. Fabien Endrizzi is not most managers.

He was still screaming for his side to press for every chance, and he told his defense to continue playing the press and his strikers to continue playing high up the pitch. That controversial approach paid off when one of those strikers, Park Sang Chul, was able to find Wolf Dreschler on the wing and play a short pass to him, allowing him to cut in and catch the defense off guard with the shot that would become the fifth goal of the match. The Red Demons still weren’t done, however.

The finished off the scoring with AJ Hara’s hat trick goal. The shifty midfielder lined up at left back again and did the same play, but to the left side instead of the right. Hiroyo Nunez would get the assist as she laid the ball forward and let AJ beat her slower defender on the wing. It looked like she’d run out of space and cross the ball back inside, but she instead used her good skill in tight spaces to spin out of a standing tackle and cut inside for a shot with her right foot. It went off of the post and in, and the humiliation was complete. She celebrated somewhat controversially by ripping her shirt off to show another shirt underneath that had an image that was a symbol of her god, Abysus(the god of chaos, for any foreigners reading this). As a player born and raised in Maris, and playing for a Marisian team, it was a strange sight to see her showing support for any god but Ignaa, the Flame God and the god of Maris.

With that match in the books, the Red Demons found themselves at the top of the table in a group that includes Ceni, who also won but not by as many goals. Their controversial tactic of running the score up seemed to be for the exact reason of getting a higher goal differential for a potential tiebreaker versus Ceni if the group comes down to that, and that’s what Fabien Endrizzi stated in the postmatch press conference. Speaking of Ceni, we play them for the group stage finale. That will decide who wins the group, if we can pull out a win in the next match against Mattijana.

But, if that’s to happen, the team is going to need to put their egos aside and everyone is going to need to accept their role, whether that be team star or practice squad member. It’s a harder challenge than it sounds.

Mattijana U21s Hold Defending Champions In Debut Match
Ceni 1-1 Mattijana

Mattijana held out for a surprising, but impressive draw against defending U21 World Cup champions Ceni as a stubborn defensive display saw them walk away with a valuable point from their first ever tournament game.

A 70th minute goal from Ben Lorennion just 5 minutes after a superb strike from Mattijanan Winger Sofiane Bisrali left the match even, with the Cenians unable to overcome a stubborn, yet organised defensive performance, from the newcomers.

Mattijana were largely forced into their own defensive area during the early stages of the match, but managed to set up organised defensive banks that the Cenian midfield was largely unabke to penetrate. On the rare occasions that the likes of Asher Koromin and Sofia Falcón did manage to pick out a forward, Mattijanan defenders managed to put in a solid block, whilst goalkeeper Martin Vaskarić was forced into an excellent low save to deny Césat Corvalán's diving header.

Winger Nova Kymeri also went close as a darting run inside enabled her to bypass Kevin Krychowiak and lash a shot narrowly wide of the right-hand post. Minutes later, another drive from the edge of the box took a deflection off Katija Zunija and looped over the head of Vaskarić, off the crossbar, and over the top for a corner.

Despite being under the cosh, Mattijana had a chance of their own to mull over during the half-time break as a counter-attack led by Sofiane Bisrali resulted in a through ball to Matej Klusić, who lashed a shot just wide with Luke Khasek in the Cenian goal rooted to the spot.

Ceni had another good spell after the break with a low cross deflecting off Krychowiak at the near post before narrowly avoiding Sofia Falcón who had made a move into the box. However it was Mattijana who took the lead with their first effort of the second half as another driving run from Bisrali was enough to beat Cicero Solis Vela at Left-back. Bisrali then stepped inside and exquisitely curled a shot into the top corner from the right-hand edge of the box to leave Khasek helpless.

Ceni rallied after the surprising score, and it didn't take them long to score as a swimging through ball over the Mattijanan defense was chased down by Ben Lorennion who held off a defender and then chipped a ball over Vaskarić and into the back of the otherwise uniccupied goal.

Ceni tried to find a late winner, but were ultimately denied by some more spirited defense and yet again the woodwork as a low shot from Lorennion hit the base of the post and was cleared to safety.

Elsewhere in group G, Cetheque were thrashed 6-0 by The Redvale, meaning Mattijana sit joint second in the group. They face Cetheque next, in their search for qualification which is now very much on after this impressive result.

Last Gasp - Part 2

13th July 2018. 3PM.

Mr. Holmes stretched out his arms before checking his watch. Seeing that it was 3PM - time for his 30 minute afternoon break, he rose from the chair and almost mindlessly walked down the main stairwell, a robot programmed to carry out the same repetitive routine every day, at the same time, with no exceptions. He was used to doing it so much that it almost seemed second nature to him; down the stairs at 3PM and straight to the market, in particular the local farmer's stall, where the farmer who he'd become great friends with worked.

It wasn't an abnormal routine to have, nor a weird thing to do on his afternoon break, as he liked fresh fruit a lot. Plus, it was a healthy routine, getting out of his office seat for half an hour and snacking on some fresh fruit from the local farmers - great for his health and great for the local economy. He was always glad to speak about the ways that he supported the local community through buying local produce and volunteering in local charities - arguably what helped make MoralEthane! do so well this past election was the effort the leader did in the local community, considering it was a rather bitter campaign - and talking about how he daily bought fresh fruit and vegetables from the local farmer in the market by the party offices and government in New Sarum was one of the ways in which he expressed this.

Speaking of local farms, he remembered that he would have to address the issue of the kidnapping at one of the local farms last night - a kidnapping he assumed had to do with GreenerEthane!, the scum of the country - and the unconfirmed reports that the kidnapped person, whoever it may have been, was being held hostage at some undercover location, and potentially being tortured in order to serve whatever needs whomever was holding that farmer hostage had. He hated doing press conferences in the sort of way that he would have to do this one, with him at the front of a large room full of press asking questions, rather than a simple interview which was much his preferred course to diffuse information he held out into the public domain, but he knew that he would have to do one, as well as the typical quick statement he would have to do for ENTV for the 6pm news, which would then likely also be broadcast on the 10pm news. He was expecting to be asked some stupid questions, but he knew the tactic: play the routine speech over and over again until they have it in their heads and understand about how the government would be doing its best to reduce the likelihood of a kidnapping such as the one that occurred last night happening again - an especially prevalent problem considering the large spike in kidnappings and killings since the election - and how the government would be supporting the family of the kidnapped person during this tough time, and doing their best to return the farmer home at the next possible moment once he was found.

Not only that, but he would also likely be slated by some of the members of his own party who were trying to undermine his position as leader of the party, not only because of their dislike for his attitude towards the media and other news outlets who diffused information from government to people - something that the members of the party didn't like happening too much, especially through the medium of a state broadcaster - as they disliked freedom of the press as they did not trust the press to be responsible in their reporting or matters, but also because of him not being militant enough and hardline in his approach to crime, the media, and other political parties who needed to be stamped out in their eyes.
The press were booked to come in at 5:30pm and record a segment for the 6pm and 10pm news on ENTV, before a generic press conference occurring at 7pm, so he was expecting to be just shy of 20 minutes in talking to ENTV. Only 20 minutes of hell, which he supposed wasn't too bad considering some of the interviews other journalists had done before.

However, now it was his break, and the purpose of coming out to chat to the guy on the local farmers stall was to forget about politics for a few minutes and get some of his worries and pressure off his chest for a few minutes, before returning to the rush of government.

Yet the man who was normally at the stall selling fruit - a job that farmer had done day-in, day-out for the past 15 years from what he had told through their quick chats when Mr. Holmes came to buy some fruit and vegetables - was absent. In fact, the stall was completely absent. He had just not turned up for the day. Mr. Holmes assumed it to be just a sick day, but you always assume the best out of a situation. He had this feeling that the farmer was in a much worse position than this, just this slight feeling, but he chose to ignore it.

Di Bradini Cup MD1 Review: Cosumar vs. Mercedini
@ Valanora

Mercedini's U21 kicked off their second Di Bradini Cup with a narrow loss against the U21 team Cosumar, which would prove to be a symbolic match for the Mercedinians considering they are playing against the nation that set them off on their journey in the Baptism of Fire. Last time in the Di Bradini Cup, Mercedini recorded only a single point in their group before they crashed out, finishing last in their group. the team that they are sending is not too dissimilar to the team they sent last time, although the one notable change would be that a large group of Mercedinian players have since travelled abroad in the last transfer window, so those players can pick up valuable knowledge from abroad and deposit that into the national team. However, all the training and preparation for their first match didn't pay off as they lost 4-3 in a very tight but entertaining match in Valanora.

With Mercedini trying to get their first win ever at a Di Bradini Cup, the team tried to go for a more attacking approach than in their previous editions. So, the midfield and attackers of both teams were busy working hard in hope of nicking the first goal of the game and, of course, the first goal of the tournament for their nation.
After about 10 minutes of open play, the game finally received it's first goal of the game courtesy of Cosumar's Airik Ruhl who's goal gave his nation the lead after 12 minutes, the goal came from a Cosumarite corner which was whipped in with pace from the far side which was flicked on by Hanger but the ball hit the post and rebounded back into play, the subsequent goal-mouth scramble was ultimately forced in by Ruhn who wheeled away to celebrate in front of the Cosumar fans, a quick start from Cosumar and it was about to get a whole lot better for the verteran nation.
Four minutes later a defensive error from the Mercedinian back line gave Lili Riprov a golden opportunity to double their lead as she raced away from the retreating Mercedinian defence, Hosset came out of the goal to narrow the angle but it wasn't enough as Riprov slipped the ball between the goalkeeper's legs to double Cosumar's lead to make the score 2-0 after 16 minutes. Play continued throughout the half with the Mercedinian coaching urging his players to go forward which opened up the pitch a lot more for both teams. The fans were getting excited at this point as they sensed goals in the game, and midway through the first half, they got one.
In the 25th minute, Mercedini opened their account at the tournament to half the deficit against Cosumar with a goal from Daniel Dostalok. The goal came from a break after Cosumar lost the ball deep in the Mercedinian half and didn't have enough men back to deal with the oncoming onslaught from the Mercedinian forwards and wingers. Crasic started the move on the left-side as he bounded forward in acres of space, he squared the ball to Chillotov whose trickery beat the final defender and that left them free on goal with two players against the Cosumarite goalkeeper. Chilltov simply squared the ball to Dostalok who tapped the ball into the empty net to get a goal back.
Action continued after that with a slew of chances for both teams, with balls flying in left right and centre before Cosumar restores their two-goal lead thanks to a second goal from Ruhn with a little help from his teammates. The move started from the midfield, Cosumar took their time trying to get the ball up field as they bided their time to find a gap in the Mercedinian defence, a through ball from Naldaboa carved open the Mercedinian defence and Ruhn slotted the ball into the net to get a third on the board for Cosumar. At half time, it was Cosumar 3, Mercedini 1!

The second half came around and both managers carried on with their starting eleven to try and carry their form into the second half and Mercedini were forced to go out attacking in hopes of reducing the deficit and hopefully clawing a point from the game against the veteran nation. Cosumar then pretty much secured their victory just after half time. The goal came after some good passing play, Mercedini didn't learn their lessons from previous times and Riprov slipped through on goal and lashed the ball home, the placement was perfect as the ball went in off the post but they all count and Cosumar found themselves 4-1 up after only 50 minutes.
Cosumar could've had five or six before the hour mark but misplaced crosses and absolute howlers denied then that chance, instead Mercedini took full opportunity of their new lease of life, by scoring a consolation goal. Chillotov got his first of the tournament after Cosumar failed to clear their lines and Chillotov fired home to make it 4-2 with about 15 minutes left plus stoppage time.
The Golden Eaglets then made it interesting when they scored again in early stoppage time, a pin-point cross from Crasic on the near side was headed in by Dostalok, the ball was a fierce header which smacked on the underside of the crossbar and landed inside the goal. The goal-line technology flashed for a goal and Mercedini reduced the deficit to one. Cosumar ultimately held on for the win to take the three points from their first match at the Di Bradini Cup

FULL TIME
Cosumar 4 - 3 Mercedini

Ruhn 12', 40', Riprov 16', 50' | Dostalok 25', 90+1', Chillotov 76'

After that disappointing match against Cosumar, Mercedini now play their next match against Taeshan in what could be a make or break match in their campaign. A win for Mercedini will put them on the front foot in their campaign for qualification. However, a win for Taeshan, coupled with a Cosumarite win against HUElavia, will see Mercedini eliminated after just two matches. We hope you have everything crossed for the next match, but from Valanora, GOODNIGHT!!!

UnderVans Pounce Llama-loving Royals in Ibini

We meet again, Di Bradini Cup.

A couple of months ago, prior to Qasden's debuting WC cycle, the Vans competed in the 38th Di Bradini Cup, the 59th overall U21 World Cup. Placed into a group consisting of the weed reapers of RK Quebec, the Azreans, and the Eaglets of Mercedini, the now titled "UnderVans" made their way out to a surprising round of 16 appearance, a first for any Qad soccer team. Sadly, in the Rose Gardens of Valanora, the Blue-Refs were ultimately ended by the San Llerans in one of the most heartbreaking games in Qailpyme history.

Now a new year and a new tournament, the UnderVans were thrown into Group C, where the housing venues would be Metropolis in beautiful Ibini and the Tar Pit in Char Sara. With no Namba and multiple clubs partaking in the roster, TQ hopped on to a flight what would be the third time to one of the few nations more SW than Qasden itself. Boulevard Drucati, the head coach of the U21 NT, seemed confident about the team, and expects them to perform well in the tournament.

"These kids have been working their keysters of for their ultimate comeback to the international stage. When we heard Namba was going to be officially transferred over to Merritt's team, many of us were joyful yet a bit worrisome of the future of UnderVan Futbol. I simply just joked with them about how now it's officially the UnderVans now.

But seriously, this team, these people who dedicated their lives toward the sport, they really are some of the finest players you'll find out there. When we get to Valanora, we'll be showcasing not only our skills, but our passion and teamwork as well. My gut tells me that the new year will be our year."

Yesterday, the Blue-Reds got there first match of the campaign against Super-Llamaland. Currently, the UnderVans have never played the Royals before. What we know is that the NT reached the semi-finals of the most recent Cup of Harmony and their baseball NT is supposedly one of the best in the multiverse.

Anyways, the Royals got the ball first, and the first few minutes were off. Pahlke managed to make a few crazy saves before the first real scoring happened. At the 18th minute, star forward and player for the Neuville Scythers, Valentijn Munson, cleaned the field in front of her of defenders before making the shot. It was ultimately blocked by the keeper, but Ulysses Fairbairn shows up in time to put the ball past Santana to take the 1-0 lead for Qasden. 6 minutes later, AM Ottoline Nosek hammered the ball in from afar to add up on the Qads' lead. Fanzones back in T.V. City and Port Harston could not be silenced after that. Not even a goal by Llamaland midfielder, Ryan McAllister, at the 44th minute could stop their partying.

The second half peaked off with a 51st minute equalizer by Stefan Rinaldi, a forward for the royals, whom sped past the remaining defenders before plunging the ball into the net behind Pahlke. 2-2, it's anyone's game now. Pahlke saves yet another crazy shot from McAllister, preventing a deficit for the first time of the game. At the 64th minute, captain Sisu Cassidy breaks the draw with a shot from in the box. 72nd minutes, Munson extends the lead with the assistance of Naoki Firmin. Now, it seemed certain a Qad victory would happen. To make sure of this, one final goal at the 88th minute was made by Brampton United's Ignace Teague. And then, it was finally over.

5-2, the score read. Qasdonians back home cheered the night away while those in Ibini partied on the beach. The win shot TQ to first in the group and one of the most appealing prospects after game 1. Meanwhile, in Char Sara, Eastfield Lodge clinches a 1-0 win over Tumbra to place second. The Redvale proved to be the most interesting story today after crushing newcomers, Cetheque, 6-0 in Longview.

Up next for the UnderVans are the lions of Tumbra, a team whom fell a very close game to the Lodgers. Can the Blue-Reds extend on their opportunity of greatness? Will they give it up for someone else? Check in for our second match day report, coming live to you from the Tar Pit of Valanora!

After the Ethane match

Nil-nil probably wasn't a bad start, all things considered - or so Krista thought as she trudged from the pitch. In all honesty she was a little surprised to have gotten off the bench, and even when she had been told to go and warm up in the second half, she had never really considered getting a run out. The Battleground was like no stadium she had ever seen before. Given that twelve months ago she was playing at Oaker Park with the West Coast Warriors, where the average attendances were 350 a week, this might take a bit of getting used to.

Some players were perhaps destined for stardom, special individuals with the world at their feet. Krista, however, knew that she was going to have to work that little bit harder than them. At nineteen, she already knew she was unlikely to ever reach the top. While a sub appearance in the Di Bradini Cup and the third tier of Nepharim football were personal achievements, which she was proud of, it didn't exactly put her in the top one percent. Even in Schottic terms, Connie Martel-Burns had won her first senior cap aged sixteen, Chloe Rudden and Kim Coultan eighteen - as far as young female players went, she was lagging well behind. None of this mattered to her right now, and she was just going to focus on enjoying the moment, however short it may be.

As she looked up at the rows and rows of seats surrounding the pitch, some rough maths told her that it would have taken more than seven years worth of matches for the West Coast fans to have sat on every seat. There were certain places in the Multiverse that were iconic for a sports fan, and Valanora was one of them. The cities, which seemed almost post-modern to Schottians, the ageless footballing superstars, it was a success that Krista couldn't even dream of.

She looked back down towards the entrance of the tunnel, where their coach, Judy Scott, was congratulating the players as they headed up. It must have been a good result then, or so Krista was able to deduce. Scott was an older woman, who she always thought looked like a PE-teacher. She was short, slim yet square, with cropped salt and pepper hair. Krista had immediately taken a shine to her, but having observed her teammates over the last week, she wasn't the only one. There was something about Scott which screamed coach, even if Kagami Ikeda was really the one in charge. Perhaps Krista just couldn't get used to having a manager who was only one year older than her. She knew the Kirisakians did things differently, and that was fine. Back at West Coast there had been could of Kirisakian girls on the roster, both students, and she got on well with them. Schottians generally had a fondness for their regional neighbours, equalled only by their marvel at how they seemed to develop players at such a young age.

For players in Schottia it was a little slower, and while they had a young senior team by some nations' standards, the average age was mid-twenties. A few of Krista's teammates would have an eye firmly on impressing the manager ahead of the World Cup pool selection. Camila, and Elspeth would certainly be giving it everything they had. Maybe that was why the pair of them had walked so quickly from the pitch following the match, neither of them had really carved out any chances. Krista got that. It could be frustrating, and some players definitely felt a pressure to give of the appearance of being a national team-memeber in waiting. Objectively speaking, Krista couldn't really say how many of this batch were ready for the senior team right now, but one or two of the former U15 champions would no doubt make it at some point. Players like Lara and Dilon would also make the step up at some point - barring any developmental disasters - but for the most part, this squad would probably fade into obscurity at some point. Even the DBC-33 winning side, who had seen unprecedented numbers go on to win senior caps, still contained players who never went any further than mid-ranked SPL sides. Everyone in Schottia could remember Eoin Killanen, Kim Coultan, Gareth Souter - but who had heard of Lenard Koor or Desmond Dispson. Even her own Corvistone teammate, Jake Brier, had been an unused substitute during the final, aged seventeen - there was no one who could say that his career had progressed on an even keel.

In the changing room there was a mix of emotions, ranging for people who saw it as a disaster, to some players who were quite upbeat. As she listened into the conversations, Krista realised for the first time how much pressure some of these players had put on themselves. There were a lot of them who seemed to believe that this was their one chance, and that failure to qualify would be curtains for their international careers. As someone who was a million miles away from a senior call-up, it perhaps impacted less on Krista, yet she could clearly see their point of view. How she saw it right now, the next match with Pasarga was going to make or break them. Krista could remember sitting on the couch with her dad and brother, aged eleven, while the Wanderers won the World Cup; and even now, the names of the senior players tripped of the tongue. How good were this narrow age band? It was hard to say really, but she was sure that the coaches wouldn't be treating them lightly. They had lifted the trophy four years ago, back when Ingþór Auðbjörnsson had been in the side, so youth development was obviously alive and well in the Rushmori nation.

Whatever happened, there was quite possibly little Krista could do. Whether she made a cameo appearance or not, the chances she would have to influence the game would be slim. Most likely, it was just going to be a case of sitting there with her fingers crossed.

The Pridnestrovian Invasion of Nordskania, Part Fifteen

Bender, Transnistrian Socialist State, Pridnestrovia

Ludvig Semyonovich Zitovchenko was a man who at first glance appeared to be completely unimportant in the grand scheme of things. At 44 years old, he was just about ripe for a mid-life crisis, but in such a tightly controlled country like Pridnestrovia, a mid-life crisis meant that people were slowly realizing that even though the country had opened up to the world, they were still very much going to spend their lives serving the government until it was time for their mandated retirement. Zitovchenko was just one such man, walking out of his downtown Bender home and taking the Metro to the local Ministry of Emergency Situations office where he served a clerical post in the ministerial department which handled cooperation between EMERCOM and the local government unit and its corresponding police and OMON paramilitary forces, working for the required eight hours, and then going straight back home on the Metro and going to his house for some dinner and a nightly cigarette. Zitovchenko’s life was a bland life, and while his neighbors tried to liven up his life by visiting him once a week and even trying to get him to meet some of the other old singles (Zitovchenko had never been married), Zitovchenko had shown no real intention of letting his life gain a little more color.

And that was the way that he wanted it. If only his neighbors knew the truth about him then they wouldn’t be trying to get close to him. In fact, if his neighbors knew the truth then they would be racing to the local Committee of State Security office trying to be the first to denounce him. For his name wasn’t really Ludvig Semyonovich Zitovchenko, and in reality, he wasn’t even Pridnestrovian at all. No, Ludvig Zitovchenko’s real name was Gylfi Nikitassen. He was the son of Nikita Krenkov-Ragnarssen, a half-Jugoskanian and half-Valerian Anglatian, and Claudine Fillon, a refugee from what is now the Imperial territory of Patierre. He was also an agent for Imperial Intelligence, the main intelligence-gathering body of the Empire of Anglatia. Gylfi had been recruited to Imperial Intelligence in his early twenties due to his Patierre heritage, and he had been sent behind enemy lines to infiltrate the communist rebellion in the once and future Anglatian colony, helping II gather vital intelligence to bring down the communists and bring the rebelling colony back into the fold. Gylfi’s mother had fled Patierre because of the communist insurgency, and his time behind enemy lines had ingrained in him a deep hatred for the communist ideology, and when the chance to infiltrate another hated communist enemy, Pridnestrovia, had come up, Gylfi had jumped at the chance. And so Gylfi Nikitassen disappeared, and in his place popped up Ludvig Zitovchenko, whose legend was that of a Nordskanian communist refugee who fled his country when the north had rebelled and separated as the anarchist Community of Revolutionary Nordskania.

Today, Zitovchenko had called in sick and excused himself from coming to work. This was the first time in over ten years that Zitovchenko had been absent from work, but his co-workers paid it no attention, since everyone got sick every now and then. The loss of a clerk wasn’t that big in the grand scheme of things in EMERCOM. But in reality, Zitovchenko was far from sick. He had skipped work because his Anglatian handlers had alerted him to the fact that a new operation was underway to insert more undercover agents in Pridnestrovia in preparation for something which had to do with the invasion of Nordskania, which Anglatia saw as a direct communist threat to the sovereignty and freedom of Patierre and by extension Anglatia itself. A family of four newly recruited deep-cover agents was on their way to Pridnestrovia, specifically Bender, and Zitovchenko had been ordered to meet and brief them on their respective tasks.

There was a knock on Zitovchenko’s door. He stubbed out his cigarette, walked up to the door, and looked through the peephole. A man and a woman were standing on the concrete steps leading to the door, and what appeared to be two teenagers who looked the same were standing behind them. Zitovchenko opened the door and asked them, “What do you want?”

“Please, sir, we’re refugees from Nordskania,” the man replied. “We just want a place to stay so we won’t freeze to our deaths today.”

“Refugees, huh?” Zitovchenko examined the family—they looked like a family to him—and asked, “What can I expect from all of you, then?”

The man’s eyes widened in surprise, and then he replied carefully, “We won’t be any trouble to you at all. We just want a place to spend the night and then we’ll be on our way.”

“All right, come on in,” Zitovchenko said, and the family practically rushed into his house. Zitovchenko closed the door and let the family settle down in the living room before approaching the man and saying, “I take it that you’re the Nordskanian family whom I’ve been told to expect.”

“Yes, that’s true,” the man replied. He held out his hand for Zitovchenko to shake. “My name is Domen Krylenko. That’s my wife, Mateja Litovchenko, and those are my twins, Sasa and Artem.”

“Welcome to Pridnestrovia, my friends. I am Ludvig Zitovchenko,” Zitovchenko said as he shook Krylenko’s hand. “Actually, that’s not my real name. My real name is Gylfi Nikitassen, but from now, you will think of me as Ludvig Zitovchenko, for that is my identity here in Pridnestrovia. So, the Emperor wants to establish a presence right in the heart of Pridnestrovia, eh? How come he chose you? And your whole family was recruited?”

“Yes, it is,” Krylenko replied as Zitovchenko led him to the kitchen where they could talk privately. “It’s a strange story, actually. We were fleeing Sopova due to the Pridnestrovian siege of the city and had planned on going to the airport, where the Imperial planes were flying out the refugees, but because it was full with all kinds of people, I decided to strike out for Shirokoye, the base where the Pridnestrovians sorted out the refugees coming their way. That was when our group was intercepted by these Anglatian soldiers, and they were specifically looking for a family, complete with father, mother, and children. One of the soldiers searching was also the one who recruited us. Her name was Grubisic, I think. I think she was from either Masloka or Turbayov. Anyway, this private told us that the Emperor was willing to offer us money and citizenship if we were to go to Pridnestrovia, act as refugees, and work on bringing down the regime from the inside. She also said that we were going to be the first ones to establish a presence here in enemy soil, but yet here you are. Surely you must be Imperial Intelligence.”

“Yes, that’s right,” Zitovchenko nodded his head. “I was sent here just in case of something like this. Of course, II wants someone already deep within the target country so that all the other agents to be inserted will be told how to adjust properly while waiting to execute their mission. And this Operation Azure Mamba appears to be the mission tasked for us to carry out. What do you know about Azure Mamba?”

“Only what I’ve already told you, and what I’m sure you’re going to tell me,” Krylenko replied. “I know that we’re supposed to gather intelligence here and work to set up some kind of cell. I think they want us to work on bringing down Stepanenko and his regime.”

“Ah, so something like Sepia Remote,” Zitovchenko said, referring to an operation in Patierre in which he had participated. “I think I know exactly what Emperor Colden wants us to do here.”

“Really? What’s that?” Krylenko asked.

“I think you’ve already said it yourself, Domen,” Zitovchenko said. “The Emperor wants us to gather enough intelligence inside Pridnestrovia so that he will know exactly which sides he needs to support when the time comes for him to lay claim to this country. You see, Stepanenko pretends that everything is all right within his country, but in truth, it isn’t. All the various nationalities currently under the Pridnestrovian banner; the Germans, the Romanians, the Turks, the Bulgarians, the Serbians, and even the Ukrainians resent Stepanenko and his preference for his fellow Russians. They’re all restless. They all want out of Stepanenko and communism. I’ve already established a few friendships with some of the local separatist movements, and I’m sure that they’ll jump on the opportunity of getting Anglatian support for their rebellions now that a majority of the army’s forces have been committed to Nordskania. In just a few more months, Pridnestrovia and Stepanenko will be no more, torn apart by the rebellions which we have worked so hard to bring to life. The good thing when all this is over is that, if you happen to grow fond of the city, you’ll be able to stay in it and still be an Anglatian citizen because, as we all know, Pridnestrovia will become Territory Twelve under the Emperor.”

“I see that you’ve already put some work into this operation, Ludvig,” Krylenko said. “May I call you Ludvig?”

“Of course, of course,” Zitovchenko nodded. “For what are we but friends and comrades under the Imperial banner? I assume that you already have accommodations for you and your family? Our code phrases aside, I don’t think I can accommodate four more people in my house at the moment.”

“I completely understand, Ludvig,” Krylenko said.

“I’ll be seeing you out,” Zitovchenko said, standing up and leading Krylenko and his family out of the door. “Since the whole family’s been recruited, you’re free to tell them what we discussed as soon as you’re able,” he told Domen. “I will keep in touch. Farewell, friends! Good luck and Godspeed!”

Zitovchenko watched as the Krylenko family went out of his house and walked down the street before turning right onto the street which would lead them to the apartments assigned to the refugees of the Nordskanian conflict which had made their way to Pridnestrovia. Zitovchenko scratched at his graying beard as he watched the Anglatian spies walk away, and then when he closed the door, he tore away the prosthetic beard which had been glued to his face by a rubber-based epoxy. The reality was that the man to whom Domen Krylenko had just talked was not actually who he thought it was. The man in Zitovchenko’s house was not Ludvig Semyonovich Zitovchenko. Nor was he even Gylfi Nikitassen. The real name of the man who had played Zitovchenko for Krylenko and his family’s benefit was actually Major Iosef Borisovich Birsakov of the Military Intelligence Directorate of the Pridnestrovian Army.

After tearing off his prosthetic beard, Birsakov took off the salt-and-pepper wig covering his fiery red hair. “Fucking filthy Anglatians,” he spat out. It had taken all of his self-control not to throw up at the words that he had told Krylenko to convince him that he was actually the undercover Anglatian agent Zitovchenko, but now that he was alone, he was free to metaphorically spit out the excrement which he had come up with to convince the Nordskanian II recruits that there actually was strife and rebellion brewing within Pridnestrovia. Birsakov pocketed his beard and wig, and then he went to hidden staircase and went down to the house’s basement.

There were three people inside the basement. One man, the real Ludvig Zitovchenko-slash-Gylfi Nikitassen, was sitting on a folding metal chair with his hands taped behind his back and more duct tape covering his mouth. Plastic sheeting had been laid out on the floor and the walls of the basement, covering every surface. In front of Zitovchenko were two GRU agents who had their pistols pointing right at his head. The message had been clear: one noise from him while Birsakov was impersonating him and his brains would find their way out of his head messily.

“Gylfi, Gylfi, Gylfi,” Birsakov said as he came down the stairs to the basement. “What have you gotten yourself into, man?” Birsakov shook his head as he arrived in the basement. “Guns down, comrades. Arbat, take off the tape on his mouth.”

The male GRU agent took hold of the duct tape on Zitovchenko’s mouth and ripped it off with more force than strictly necessary, and the Anglatian spy howled as the tape ripped off the hairs on his beard along with some skin. “Where were we before we were so rudely interrupted, Gylfi?” Birsakov said as he resumed the interrogation that had been happening in the basement of Zitovchenko’s house since four in the morning, when the GRU had come knocking to the Anglatian agent’s residence to ask him a “few” questions about his true identity and line of work. “Oh, yes. Operation Azure Mamba. What do you know about it? Or is it still worth it for me to ask you that? After all, I think I already learned more from the new arrivals.”

“What more do you want to know?” Zitovchenko asked through the fire of pain on his mouth. “I know that there are other agents operating inside Pridnestrovia, but I don’t know their names or their missions! All I know is my mission! You have to believe me!”

“Oh, I believe you, Gylfi, all right,” Birsakov said loftily. “But for our purposes, all we need is you and your cell. And they’ve landed right in our laps, have they not? All right, Arbat, Fadia, the mission is over. Time for us to wrap this up and do our disappearing act.”

“Does this mean you’re letting me go?” Zitovchenko asked, hoping against hope even as he remembered the reputation of the GRU, which was matched only by that of the KGB.

“Oh, Gylfi, did you honestly think that we would let you go after all you’ve done for us?” Birsakov suddenly pulled out his MP-443 Grach pistol and fired a round point-blank at Zitovchenko’s head. The Anglatian spy was tilted back by the impact of the bullet on his head, and then his body slid out of the chair and onto the ground. Blood came out from the back of Zitovchenko’s head and sprayed everything behind him. But the plastic sheeting which the GRU agents had put down before the interrogation had done its job of protecting the actual basement and facilitating cleanup of the place once the GRU was done with their prisoner. “Good call on the plastic, Arbat Ilyich,” Birsakov said.

“It’s just personal experience, Comrade Major,” Senior Lieutenant Arbat Ilyich Chomsky said in reply. “This kind of thing used to happen a lot in the Republika Kroatien. The Kroatiens would get their hands on an Armeian collaborator, take him to a special house with plastic sheets for wallpaper then execute him right then and there. The plastic made cleanup much easier and also gave the investigating Armeians little if any clues to work with if ever they were able to investigate the death of that particular collaborator of theirs.”

“You have a call, Comrade Major,” the female GRU agent, Junior Lieutenant Fadia Davidovna Serova, said as she approached Birsakov with the latter’s cellphone in her hand. “It’s Colonel Chakulakov.”

Birsakov took the phone and answered the call. “Yes, Comrade Colonel?” he asked in greeting. “Yes, we have uncovered the latest Anglatian plot against the Comrade President and the government. It’s Azure Mamba, Comrade Colonel. Yes, I have eliminated the actual spy and will take his place for all further communications with the cell. Yes, I believe I have gained the other spies’ trust, but of course I will work on improving our relations further. We will make them believe that Azure Mamba, or at least their part of it, is running well and smoothly. They will play the part which we will give for them very well. And there’s something else you should know: Agent TANGENT is in. The drop in communications with her must have been due to her gaining the Anglatians’ trust as she infiltrated. But she’s in, Comrade Colonel, and she’s given us Azure Mamba.”

Edge of Nowhere

Chapter Two

Sacrifice.

Lindsey Calderon had sacrificed so much. If she stopped putting herself aside so others could be happier, she might be in a much better position in life and she might be out of the Fifth Ward. If she hadn’t sacrificed for others, she wouldn’t be stuck with a busted knee that was keeping her up at night right now because of the pain. She would be playing at one of the top football academies, maybe even linking back up with Annamarie Janzen-Hara at FC Maris Ladies. There would be a bright future ahead of her. But because of her sacrifices, she didn’t know if she had a future at all. Something had to change.

On that night, she climbed out of bed and got dressed and went to her drawer and looked at the letter that she had received a week earlier, the one that she needed to make a decision on before next week. It was from the Midland Bluesox, one of the better youth clubs in the country. After asking her old youth coach to reach out to clubs for her, they were the only ones that were interested. Not even her sister’s former club, Black Knights Primavera, was willing to take a risk on her.

She held the letter in her shaking hands and stared at it for a good minute or two, before folding it up, putting on her jacket, and stuffing it into a pocket. She had made her decision. As she stepped out of the tiny trailer bedroom and then stepped out of the trailer entirely, into the snow, she decided that she had made enough sacrifices. She still wanted to look out for her family, but if she was to do that, she would need to start by looking out for herself.

It was time for Lindsey Calderon to make her own name.

=====

Being away from family was a new experience for Park Sang Chul. Even when he had been playing for Sporting, his parents had frequently visited him every month in Avgaria. Now, he was in another city, one that was very big and very different, and headed to a place that was considered to be the middle of nowhere. He would be doing it without either parent being there, nor with any of his friends from back in Janford. As a popular athlete in two sports back home, he’d always had a good sized circle of friends around him. Now… He was by himself, headed into a city that many people struggled to leave.

While he was waiting for the train to start moving, he reached for his phone and started texting his parents to tell them that he was on the way to Midland. He didn’t get a reply for a few seconds, and switched to his conversation with coach Endrizzi. He also told him that he was on the way there, but that he might be a bit delayed because of the snowstorm. After that, he used his phone camera to snap a quick picture of himself sitting next to the window, uploading it to all his social media accounts with the caption: “On the way to Midland”. That was basically officially confirming that he was moving to Midland instead of signing with Sporting Avgaria B for a second contract.

Less than minutes after he posted that, he received both welcoming comments from Midland fans and angry comments from Sporting fans. Most of the angry comments were in the same vein; all of them were calling him selfish, saying he valued his playing time more than he valued playing for the legendary green and white shirt of Avgaria. Unlike others, who wouldn’t reply to messages like those, Park decided to mess with his haters a bit and flip the script on them. He replied to one of the more recent Sporting comments: “You’re a snake who only cares about money and playing time. Have fun being a big fish at a tiny pond in Midland.”

He quickly typed out a reply, pressing send and waiting for the reactions to that one: “Actually I took a pay cut to move to Midland. It’s not all about money. I talked to Collin Milosevic and he told me I had no future at Sporting unless I waited my turn and quit basketball. I told him I wasn’t going to quit and he told me not to renew my contract.”

Park rolled his eyes as he remembered that conversation. If anyone was a snake, it was Milosevic, the manager of the senior team at Sporting and the one who had recruited him as a sixteen year old. That recruitment made him more angry the more he thought about it, because it had been based on flat out lies. He opened the notes app on his phone, and started typing a longer note about that: “Back when I was sixteen and every club in the country was battling for my signature, I visited Sporting and they gave me a tour of the senior team’s facilities and then told me that I could be there in a few years with the B team. I asked if basketball would be a problem and the manager of Sporting B told me that playing two sports was fine and that I could play college basketball in Avgaria if I wanted, once I finish high school.

I signed for them and played for a couple of years and now that I’m eighteen and I have offers to play basketball for the U of Avgaria and Avgaria Tech, Collin told me that I would never consistently start for the B team or get into the first team unless I waited behind Sebastian Berrios and quit basketball to show that I’m dedicated. They never said anything about this beforehand, and Milosevic and my manager at Sporting B told me completely contradictory things. This team isn’t the Sporting of old. They’re one of the worst run organizations in Redvali football, and the fact that they can’t attract any stars proves my point. But somehow, I’m the snake for leaving for another club that might live up to their promises.”

He took a screenshot of the note, and uploaded that one too. It was then that he put his phone away and turned his music back on, sitting back and waiting for the train to leave. That was when the person who was apparently supposed to be sitting next to him finally arrived. While he was wearing designer clothes from the rich Janfordian brands, this girl was the complete opposite. She had on a weathered looking sweatjacket, and a pair of cargo pants that were torn in a few spots. Her hair was a mess, too. It was as if she hadn’t touched it at all since waking up. And in addition to that, her face had a bunch of cuts on it that weren’t completely healed yet, like she had recently been in a fight. Park was trying not to stare, but she noticed anyway and shrugged as she sat down next to him, with her bag at her feet. “I got up in the middle of the night and walked all the way here from South Maris,” she said. “The name’s Lindsey. And you are…?”

“Sang Chul. Everyone just calls me Park,” replied Park, giving her a shrug of his own. “You’re headed to Midland too, right? To play for the Bluesox? I just signed with them. Used to play in Avgaria, but I didn’t really get along with the management enough to renew my contract.”

“Oh, I know you. You’re that kid from Janford,” Lindsey said, recognition spreading to her face. “You play football and basketball. You were supposed to be the next big thing in Avgaria and then Berrios and Kohler took over that role. What happened?”

“Long story,” said Park. “Like I said, me and the upper management have very different views and I didn’t think I would ever get out of the B team. I decided to jump ship while I still can and see if I can still salvage something from my career in the RYC. Even though it’s going to screw up my basketball career, since I played my last years of high school for Avgaria Central and my scholarship offers are from the U of Av and AvTech. How’d you end up in Midland? You say you’re from South Maris, I’m surprised the Black Knights didn’t poach you if you’re good enough to make Midland.”

Lindsey chuckled softly, and it was a sad chuckle rather than a funny one. “I wanted to play there, but Midland was the only club in the entire league that’s willing to pay for the surgery to fix my knee. I used to work in the mines down south around Mount Maris, and I had an accident and broke one of my knees in a few places. It never healed right, and I had to quit football for a bit. But I’m trying to get back into it and my old coach knew someone at Midland that got them to take a chance on me-”

“Hey, wait a minute. You look familiar, but I don’t know you. You have a relative that plays, right? Let me think,” said Park, examining her face. “I know your sister. She plays in Maris, she has her hair in braids… She talks with the same accent as you. I just can’t think of a name… Kylie Calderon. That’s her. You related to her?”

“Regrettably,” said Lindsey. “We don’t talk, because she’s kind of a complete prick. Me and my parents are from the Fifth Ward, you know, the part of South Maris that’s just a bunch of trailer parks grouped together, and she hasn’t given us a cent of her new cash because she’s still mad about her childhood. It’s fine, though. Before I got injured, I was the better player in the family. I’m going to come back and get my own big contract in a few years.”

The train started to move, and Park stared out the window as they left the Maris station and started towards the place that everyone said was at the edge of nowhere. “So it looks like we’re both looking for new starts. Figures. You’re trying to start over after getting hurt, I’m trying to start over after getting ripped off by management. And we both happened to end up in Midland to do it. It almost seems cliche. The starting over by moving to the middle of nowhere, I mean.”

“Yeah. Hopefully things work out better over there. I hear the coaching staff is the best in the league, but Midland isn’t really known for being a pro pipeline in the same way that the Black Knights or Janford Primavera or the West Shore Bucs are,” Lindsey stated. “I’m here to try to go pro. I need the money, and I’m only going to get one season in the RYC… So I’m going to have to make it good enough to get the attention of professional scouts. I don’t have basketball to fall back on, like you. No offense.”

“No, I understand,” said Park, as they completely left the station and went onto one of the elevated tracks near the freeway that led south. “I’ve had plenty of teammates like you, who need to play for the money. I’ve never been in that position but I understand it,” he added. He was silent for the next few minutes, staring at the landscape as it went by and the train picked up more speed and left the station.

“Let’s hope this new life works out for both of us,” he said eventually, and he meant it.

=====

While El Forte, the surprisingly large stadium that the Midland Bluesox played in, was the main place that came to mind when one thought of that club, Park and Lindsey weren’t heading there. No, they were heading to the eastern suburbs of the city, to the place that they called the Office. It wasn’t quite an actual office, and it was the main training ground of the team, but the team headquarters was next door to the multiple pitches that were surrounded by a thick stone wall that kept with the fortress theme. That theme came from early in Midland’s history, when it was mainly a fortress city, and the Bluesox held onto the identity even when the place became more known for refining and for the aviation industry.

That massive stone wall that surrounded the place was intimidating, but it also made Park’s heart flutter when he saw it. It was just like it looked in the pictures, and as soon as the taxi pulled up to the gate and he saw that wall, he knew that he was finally here. It was made of grey stone, and it was eight or nine feet tall, with black spikes lining the top. He’d been told that it was for decoration, but it did resemble an actual fortress wall. When he and Lindsey stepped out of the taxi with their bags, and went through the main gate that led to the headquarters, there was already someone waiting for them.

“Park, Lindsey, welcome to Midland,” the man said, trudging through six inches of snow to get to them. “You’ll have to forgive us for not getting the snow cleaned up around here. We’ve got heated pitches, but not heated walkways, unfortunately. My name is Garen Mauer, and I’m the assistant manager around here as well as the head coach. While Fabien is the manager, you’re going to be spending a lot of time under my watch in training, since Fabien prefers not to handle that himself. I’m also the one who keeps Fabien informed about his squad and helps keep things running smoothly, so if either of you two ever have a problem with something or someone, I’m the one to come to. Now, you’ve arrived late because of the snow, so do you want to go straight inside for the medical tests, or do you want to go to the training ground and watch your new teammates finish up practice? Fabien wanted both of you to meet the squad as soon as you can.”

“We’ll watch the practice, I guess,” Park said, kind of disappointed that the snow had delayed them enough that they would miss participating. “I want to meet my new teammates, too. I hear we have a competitive bunch of players around here.”

“You heard correctly,” chuckled Garen, waving them towards another snow covered walkway that led to the training pitches. Even with all the snow, the heated grass was allowing them to keep up their training. Last season, the team ownership had thought about moving to an indoor facility, but Fabien Endrizzi had blocked the move because he wanted his team to get experience playing in the elements. That experience always helped them when they had to go to places like Castle or West Shore, or even Glenham, where cold and snow were common.

Both Park and Lindsey followed Garen, and they arrived at the spot where the rest of the staff were gathered and the first team and second team players were going at it in a series of hard fought five on five scrimmages. There was plenty of noise. A lot of shouting, plenty of cursing, plenty of defenders and midfielders calling out shots to their teammates. The training here was much more raucous than at Sporting B, where the staff had actually discouraged players from going too hard because they wanted them to be fit for matches. At Sporting, everyone trained like they were trying to avoid getting too tired or injured. In Midland, it looked like everyone was playing harder than they did when they were in an actual game.

“Pass the fucking ball!” screamed the striker that was in the closest match to Park and Lindsey, as he rushed towards the offside line with one defender covering him. A midfielder lobbed a pass forward, and the striker leapt along with the defender to try to make contact with it. He managed to head it down to where he could trap it with his feet, and he shifted to spin to face the defender one on one, at shooting distance. “You want me to shoot or cut in on you? I’ll let you pick.”

“From eighteen yards? Take your best shot,” the center back bantered back, lowering his stance and clapping his hands as he prepared to block any shot that was incoming. The striker feinted as if he was about to cut outside, and then pulled back and fired towards the left corner. The ball went off of the post and off of the keeper’s gloves and into goal, and he just put his arms up in celebration and pounded his chest.

“It’s too easy!” he shouted, doing a backflip before his teammates ran over to congratulate him. That was apparently the last goal of that match, because Fabien blew the whistle to signal that the group of players on that pitch were done. And, while they had been trash talking during the match, the striker and the defender seemed to be pretty good friends.

“You’re bold, I’ll give you that,” he said, slapping the striker on the back as they walked towards the bench. “Keep at it and the armband is gonna be yours. I can only hope that they make me the vice captain. You know Fabien likes guys that lead by example.”

As Fabien was moving to talk to the players that had just finished, Garen led the new players over to the group. “Lads, these are the two newbies that are going to be joining our team. Well, they aren’t complete newbies, because they’ve played before at a good level. You might recognize Lindsey Calderon because her sister played for Black Knights and then got picked up by FCML. And I’m sure all of you know Park Sang Chul, after he torched our defense for two stoppage time goals with Sporting B last season. But fortunately, we won’t have to play against him again, except for in training. Park’s decided to come here, because the stifling collectivism of Sporting Avgaria wasn’t for him.”

The players roared in laughter, as if this was funny. “Moving to the team that finished above you last season? Seriously? If you can’t beat em, join em, I guess,” said the defender, who Park could easily pick out of a crowd because of his large afro and the tattoos that ran up both legs. The other players chuckled, like they were sizing up the new kids.

“Aren’t you a basketball player? You’re never going to start here unless you commit to one sport, just saying,” said the striker, who had even more tattoos than the defender. While the defender looked like a Hispanic Marisian, the striker looked like he’d come straight from one of the harder neighborhoods in Midvale. He was English looking, he had the Markham accent, and his face was as rugged as you would expect from someone who had worked in heavy industry in Midvale, a region that was infamous for using child workers. And he also had the traditional military buzzcut that plenty of boys from Markham, whether they were tied with the military or not, wore.

Park had an uncomfortable look after that remark, before the whole group of players roared in laughter again. “He’s taking the piss, mate,” the defender said. “We’re not going to get on you for playing two sports, we’re actually fans of the way you stuck it to Sporting. We fucking hate Sporting in these parts. Right guys?”

“Fuck Sporting, and fuck the U of Av too. Oh, and fuck AvTech. If I was running this country, I’d move the capital to Maris and sell everything east of the Midland River,” said another player, a girl who was apparently a backup goalkeeper. “Oh, and I forgot the Avgaria Hawks. Fuck them. I hate their colors and I hate their quarterback’s face and I hate how they get relevant again last season and their fans get uppity and pretentious. Can you name a more annoying team in gridiron?”

“The annual Maris Tech hype train is probably worse,” said the striker, laughing at the girl’s intensity. He looked back to the new players, grinning. “Anyway, welcome to the squad. We’re glad that you decided to leave the scum from the southeast, and we don’t really have any bad blood with your actual hometown. My name’s Vic Tanner, I play striker. We’ll probably be playing next to each other in most games, even though you’re technically a center fielder. My friend in defense is Renato Moleiro, the guy who makes more big saves than the keepers do. He’s not flashy, but he is faster than he looks and he’s the guy that cleans up after us strikers when we stretch the formation too far and get caught with counter attacks. Our goalkeeper friend is Nina Herrera, who’s rehabbing from a bunch of injuries. She’s a world beater at her best, but she turned down offers from Janford and Maris because she wanted to play for her hometown club.”

“I see you’re already meeting your teammates,” said Fabien, butting into the conversation. “I suppose I’m late, but I wanted to be the first one to officially welcome you to Midland. Our city isn’t one that you’re going to see on TV or in the news very much, but since you’re both such hard workers, I have a feeling that you’ll feel right at home here. We value that above everything, really. Especially in sports. The people of this city have seen a lot of shitty teams over the years, but they put up with it as long as the players fight hard until the end. You two seem like the type that fit that philosophy. In any case, welcome. You signed at just the right time, because this season, we want to do a bit more than just fight hard. We have title aspirations.”

Torgos Tribune ~ A Step At A Time

If Tobias Möller is to reestablish the importance domestic based youth products, then he has at least started out on the right foot with the first match at the Di Bradini Cup in Valanora. While a one to nil victory is hardly the sort of result that one writes home about or makes the big headlines, the fact that the side got the win that they desired and needed is the sort of result that gets the job done. Given the failures of the national team both in the senior and youth squads in the last three years, getting the job done is exactly the sort of result that you want, that the side also kept a clean sheet is a sign that the national team program is getting back to its roots of a solid defense that allows the midfield to build up the attack. No one is doubting the scoring prowess of Pasargan strikers right now but they are doubting the consistency of our defenders and to set the tone in the first match with a clean sheet is a rather good sign for the players and program.

The Young Wanderers were put to the test though by Boring Paradise, despite the foe being perceived as the weakest of the four sides in Group A, which perhaps could be backed by the results of the first matchday. Where the Young Wanderers were able to secure their victory over Boring Paradise, Schottia and Ethane fought each other to a nil all draw in the opening match of the tournament at the Battleground. Each defense looked quite comfortable and capable of shutting down any potential opponent's attack and that Boring Paradise was the only team to concede in the first match of the group is perhaps a sign that they are the most easily dispatch of the quartet. Yet the resistance that they showed against the Wanderers definitely tells Schottia and Ethane that they can not simply hope outmuscle Boring Paradise off the pitch, because if they think they can do such then they are simply setting themselves up for a potential upset against a side that will have nothing to lose and everything to play for.

Indeed, Boring Paradise's attack looked quite promising when it did venture forward against the stalwart backline of our squad and on another day they might have been rewarded with a goal or two for their efforts on target. Yet the natural skill of Guðný Ingólfsdóttir in the center of the defense as well as Gerber's catlike reflexes as the goalkeeper were simply too much for Boring Paradise to overcome and notch the goal that they needed and desired to try and steal a point out of the match. It is no surprise though that those two would give such a good performance, with Gerber routinely taking the place between the pipes for CAP during their Copa runs while Ingólfsdóttir is seen as something as of a super sub at Tani, the two best clubs in the SuperLiga.

However one must score the goals to win the games and that was exactly what Claudio Romano managed to do in the forty-ninth minute, despite failiing to convert two very easy chances in the first half that ought to have seen the Wanderers be put ahead then. However Romano made sure that the third chance he had for a goal did not go begging, as he brought down the cross from Robitaille on his chest and then smashed home the goal on a half volley. While a solitary goal does the job, you can be sure that Romano and all the strikers will be looking to try and expand upon that effort in the upcoming two matches, though the defensive work of Schottia and Ethane may be a bit much to ask for more than a single goal in a match. Schottia is looking particularly difficult to break down but should the Wanderers find a way to secure a victory in their second match against them, then they will have secured their spot in the knockouts with a match to spare. Such motivation is surely a driving force for a side that has much to prove to itself as it does those who are looking at them in skepticism.

IS THE DRAW AGAINST MATTIJANA A HARBINGER OF BAD THINGS TO COME?
Is the match an indicator of the Cenian Di Bradini Cup team and their prowess?
YES: Ceni's DBC team displayed multiple errors and had bad chemistry. It won't defend its title
Drawing isn't something the Cenian DBC team is used to - especially against teams that previously had a nonexistent national program, especially against teams that had a lot less promise than Ceni's national team. It was a slap in the face when I found out yesterday's result; I was extremely disappointed with the draw to Mattijana - for a multitude of reasons. Firstly, Ceni was horribly disorganized; secondly, Ceni had some major problems on the defense; and finally, this draw likely took away Ceni's chance of defending its title - and perhaps even making it out of the group.

A lot of people have been praising what they call Ceni's great "flexibility" and its "versatility," but in the real world, that really just means "disorganization." Case in point: Nova Kymeri didn't really know where to be on the field. When she needed to be in a defensive posture, thus shunting Xavi Caldera into an attacking role, she was in her normal left-wing posture; when she needed to be in the normal posture, she was in her defensive posture. This confused the rest of the midfield, for much of the machinations of Petrossian's carefully-selected midfield depends on the successful swaps of players between defensive and offensive positions. Kymeri was almost the linchpin of this entire system, and she failed to be in the place she needed to be. The result was confusion on all fronts as we saw how the team was too reliant on this versatile model of play. Additionally, despite the supposed chemistry between a couple of the players, there appeared to be some gaps in passing among the offense, especially between the two "groups" of players on the pitch - Koromin, Onasi, and Lorennion worked well together, and Falcon, Caldera, and Corvalan worked well together, but the two sides of the pitch didn't connect all that well with each other, and the result was the ability of the Mattijanan defense to get between the groups and prevent too many goals from being scored.

Additionally, the defense had some problems in allowing the Mattijanan offense to score their one and only goal of the match. The Mattijanan press describes their one goal run as a "driving run" through the Cenian defense - obviously, if the defense is permitting one player to just drive through them in the blink of an eye, with only one player marking that man, there's quite a problem with the defense. Luke Khasek might have been caught out of the lurch with the goal, but he should have been coordinating the defense and keeping his eye on the ball so he wouldn't be blindsided by this stunning run toward the goal. Again, within the defense, there was some confusion within the defense, especially in the response to that run and marking the other players. I think that the defensive blunders was a major cause of the draw today. Admittedly, though, Ceni's offense was great for what it was - the Mattijanan defense was just too strong, and they got lucky on several key plays that allowed them to defend their goal effectively. But I don't think the offense is Ceni's problem, despite the lack of goals in this disappointing draw.

Finally, the most important reason why this draw is so disappointing is that it significantly decreases Ceni's chance of getting out of the group. It would take a series of favorable results to get out - hopefully starting with a solid win over the Redvale. But they crushed Cetheque 6-0 - meaning whatever happens, unless Ceni beats them, they will be on top of Ceni on goal difference. It's also looking like Ceni will likely lose to them (see their form in the dominating win over Cetheque), and after that, assuming that Mattijana also loses to the Redvale, it will be up to a) how badly Ceni loses to the Redvale and b) how much Ceni defeats Cetheque by in order to progress against Mattijana - with the head-to-head of course being a draw. Even if Ceni does survive the goal-difference lottery, it would then be stuck at the second seed position - meaning that Ceni would be stuck playing a team like San Jose Guayabal or Nephara, which seem to actually be placing emphasis on their youth development this time. In short, this loss doesn't bode well for Ceni's chances in this Di Bradini Cup.

NO: Ceni has always needed a match to work out the kinks. Besides, Ceni dominated the match; it simply got unlucky
What do Zenic, Schottia, and Mattijana have in common? Answer: they have all taken points from the Cenian Di Bradini Cup team in the group stage. In the case of the former two nations, the Cenian team went on to reach the final, despite the loss - or perhaps because of the loss. So it's not a stretch to say that this draw to Mattijana will not significantly affect the progress of Ceni throughout this tournament - if they end up making it out of the group, but I'm not too worried about that either, because frankly, Ceni showed a lot of promise during their match and simply got unlucky; they have plenty of time to shake off the effects of this bad luck.

First of all, Ceni has almost always lost or drawn a game in their pursuit of the Di Bradini Cup title. For example, in DBC 35, Ceni lost a tight game to Zenic on the second day of the group stage but won the group anyhow and ended up going all the way to the final; in DBC 38, when the team picked up their first title, they lost to Schottia, by a larger margin than the game against Zenic, yet they won the group and, indeed, won the whole title! Additionally, the Cenian national senior team drew with Boring Paradise (twice) and Buyan before qualifying directly to the World Cup for the first time. More examples abound, but the point is clear: Ceni can take a loss and still go forward in the tournament! A draw is even better than a loss - at least there's a point gained by this draw. I don't think that this game will have any impact on the chances of Ceni getting into the knockout rounds, much less winning the title. For one, Ceni's offense still has a lot of striking power and potential to go forward; obviously, the defense of Cetheque is awful, and Ceni could easily get a win against them, as well as the Redvale, which seems to be a winnable match, to be honest. Ceni can still go forward from the group in first place! And even if they don't, the knockouts are a totally different beast, which means that group standing really doesn't matter in the long run, only the results of the knockout game. Finally, to round out this point, this game could serve as a game to "shake out" all the difficulties with the Cenian team; I do concede that there are difficulties that we face, but we can manage them and look to improve them after this draw, which basically wakes us up from our delusion of believing that we can waltz through this DBC again. So, there are at least three reasons why this draw isn't an obstacle to the Cenian DBC team.

Furthermore, Ceni simply just got unlucky - and the draw isn't really a reflection of how good or bad the Cenian national team is! Mattijana just had a stonewall of a defense, and they got lucky on a couple of shots - with several near-misses, deflections off the post, and lucky saves throughout the game preventing this from being a blowout from Ceni. Indeed, Ceni dominated throughout the game, with way more shots, shots on target, and other offensive statistics than Mattijana; only sheer luck and some heroics by the Mattijanan goalkeeper prevented them from winning the game, while the luck of the Mattijanan striker in getting through a narrow gap and shooting into a small space in the goal allowed them to salvage that point. It's clear that Ceni was just unlucky during the match. Additionally, Ceni still has a great midfield and offense, as proved by the performance of various players during the match, especially Lorennion's stellar performance and Koromin's excellent playing under strong pressure to score during this match. Caldera and Onasi also had some excellent runs along the wings. So, it's clear that Ceni still has a foundation for improvement, and a strong foundation at that. It was just some unlucky events that prevented that from being translated into a win, and I think Ceni still has a strong shot at defending their title, despite (and maybe because of) this draw. After all, we wouldn't be having this discussion about improving the team and how to fix the team if this draw hadn't happened, so I think that this draw could actually be a force for good. In few circumstances will it result in Ceni's elimination - we can't be pessimistic about every setback any more.
